Durangoko Azoka
Llega la semana del Festival Internacional de Cine Documental y Cortometraje de Bilbao (ZINEBI), que cumple su 61ª edición desde el 8 hasta el 15 de noviembre, en el Teatro Arriaga. Estamos ante el único festival internacional de Clase A en España en esta categoría.
Es el principal evento de la cultura vasca donde descubrir una amplia oferta de libros y discos para todo tipo de públicos. La 54ª edición de Durangoko Azoka tiene lugar entre el 5 y el 8 de diciembre, en Durango (Bizkaia).
The International Documentary Film and Short Film Festival (ZINEBI) week is back in Bilbao, with its 61st edition to be held between 8 and 15 November, at the Arriaga Theatre. This is the only Class A international festival in Spain in this category.
The most important event for Basque culture where you can discover a wide offer of books and albums for all kinds of audiences. The 54th edition of Durangoko Azoka will take place between 5 and 8 December, in Durango (Biscay).

El 23 de diciembre, Olentzero protagoniza un mágico desfile con Mari Domingi, los duendes, sirenas y hadas antes de traer los regalos a las niñas y niños; y el 5 de enero por la tarde, se celebra la Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos que va desde la Gran Vía hasta el Ayuntamiento.
Esta exposición propone un recorrido por la trayectoria del reconocido fotógrafo alemán. Muestra ejemplos de sus diferentes etapas con una gran selección de piezas que han impulsado la evolución de su obra. Hasta el 19 de enero de 2020 en el Museo Guggenheim Bilbao.

El Museo Vasco de Bilbao está situado en pleno Casco Viejo de la ciudad, ocupando el edificio del siglo XVII del que fuera Iglesia y Colegio San Andrés de la Compañía de Jesús. En su planta baja se encuentra uno de los atractivos principales del Museo para sus visitantes, el claustro, con su nueva cubierta de vidrio cuyo objetivo es el de mejorar la conservación de las piezas que se encuentran en el patio y el de lograr una ampliación del espacio del centro para la realización de actividades culturales. Es un espacio único que expone sarcófagos, escudos de armas y el famoso ídolo del Mikeldi. Este se encontró junto a la desaparecida ermita de Mikeldi en Iurreta (Bizkaia). Está realizado en un único bloque de arenisca procedente de los alrededores de Durango y representa de forma esquemática a un animal, un verraco, entre cuyas 12
The Basque Museum in Bilbao is located in the heart of the Old Quarter City, occupying the 17th-century building that used to be the Church and School of San Andrés de la Compañía de Jesús. The ground floor features one of the Museum´s main attractions for visitors, the cloisters, with their new glass roof, the purpose of which is to improve the conservation of the items in the patio and to expand the centre's space for cultural activities. It is a unique space that exhibits sarcophagi, coats of arms and the famous Mikeldi idol. The latter was found beside the now disappeared chapel of Mikeldi in Iurreta (Biscay). It is made with a single block of sandstone from near Durango and it represents the rough outline of an animal, a boar, with a disc between its legs and

Fair Saturday - 29 y 30 de noviembre / 29 and 30 November El Fair Saturday es un movimiento global de marcado impacto social en el que artistas y organizaciones culturales de todas las disciplinas se unen para reivindicar que el arte y la cultura son esenciales para el futuro. Lo hacen celebrando todo tipo de conciertos, espectáculos, exposiciones, talleres y apoyando a una causa social de su elección. El evento inaugural tendrá lugar el viernes 29 en el Bilbao Arena de Miribilla, donde más de 1.000 personas se reúnen en un espectáculo que supone el arranque de este evento internacional. En este concierto participan entre otros Zea Mays, Urko, Marta Urbieta y Mikeldi Atxalandabaso, la escocesa Mairi Campbell y casi 30 coros locales y foráneos como el Quincy Choral Society de Massachussets. Sonarán canciones pop, clásicas y tradicionales vascas, así como de bandas sonoras o musicales. Al día siguiente, el 30 de noviembre, Fair Saturday ha programado más de 150 actos en los que se recaudan fondos para distintas entidades.
Fair Saturday is a global movement with a significant social impact where artists and cultural organisations from all fields join forces to defend that art and culture are essential for the future. They do so by holding all types of concerts, performances, exhibitions, workshops and by supporting a social cause of their choice. The opening event will take place on Friday 29 in the Bilbao Arena in Miribilla, where more than 1000 people will gather at a show that kicks off this international event. Participating in this concert will be, among others, Zea Mays, Urko, Marta Urbieta and Mikeldi Atxalandabaso, Scottish artist Mairi Campbell and close to 30 local and foreign choral groups such as the Quincy Choral Society de Massachussets. There will be pop, classical and traditional Basque songs as well as film scores or musicals. The following day, on 30 November, Fair Saturday has scheduled more than 150 events which seek to raise funds for different entities.

En otras calles son rojas o blancas. “En esta del Casco Viejo tienen forma de campanas con una velita”, dice Diego. El chico y su hermana han salido muy abrigados, con sus bufandas y gorros de lana, a disfrutar del desfile de Olentzero y Mari Domingi. Juegan con el vaho que les sale de la boca. Huele a castañas asadas y algodón de azúcar. Es el principio de la Navidad. El lunes 23 de diciembre, Olentzero, personaje de la cultura popular vasca, baja de su caserío montado en un caballo gigante y sujetando un saco repleto de regalos. “Se ríe todo el rato, como Santa Claus”, señala Miren. Al bonachón carbonero y a Mari Domingi les secunda su corte de seres mitológi-

cos, como ‘Basajaun’ (el protector del bosque) o los traviesos ‘galtzagorri’ (pequeños como duendes y muy juguetones). “Tenemos que coger un buen sitio entre la Plaza de Moyúa y el Teatro Arriaga para verlo bien. El año pasado vino muchísima gente. ¿Te acuerdas?”, pregunta Miren. Diego asiente, aunque ya está pensando en qué día irá a patinar. Entre mediados de diciembre y mediados de enero el ayuntamiento habilita una pista de patinaje en la ciudad y Diego se pirra por deslizarse a toda velocidad. El año pasado la pista estuvo en el Muelle de Ripa. “¿Dónde estará la pista de patinaje este año?”, se interesa Diego. “Luego lo miro en Internet”, resuelve Miren. Aunque, en realidad ella prefiere ir a al Parque Infantil de Navidad (PIN). Todas sus amigas aseguran que es una pasada. El PIN es enorme. "These in the Old Quarter are shaped like bells with a small candle", says Diego. The boy and his sister have left home wrapped in warm clothes, with their woolly scarves and hats, to enjoy the parade with Olentzero and Mari Domingi. They play with their white breath in the cold. There's the smell of roasted chestnuts and candy floss. It's the beginning of Christmas. On Monday 23 December, Olentzero, a character in traditional Basque culture, descends from his farmhouse riding a giant horse and holding a sack full of presents. "He laughs all the time, like Santa Claus", says Miren. The cheerful charcoal
maker and Mari Domingi are supported by their entourage of mythological creatures, such as 'Basajaun' (the protector of the forest) or the mischievous 'galtzagorris' (small, playful elves). "We have to find a good place between Plaza Moyúa and the Arriaga Theatre to get a good view. Last year there were soooo many people. Remember?", asks Miren. Diego nods, though he's already thinking about when he'll go ice skating. From mid-December to mid-January, the city council sets up an ice-skating rink in the city and Diego can't wait to tear around the rink. Last year the ice-skating rink was set up at Muelle de Ripa. "Where will the ice-skating rink be this year?", Asks Diego. "I'll look it up on the Internet later", replies Miren. Though, actually, she prefers to go to the Children's Christmas Park (PIN). All her friends say that it's amazing. The PIN is enormous. It opens its doors at the Bilbao Exhibition Centre (BEC!)

Mientras tanto, lo que Diego no puede quitarse de la cabeza es la Cabalgata de Reyes. Desde muy pequeñito, le tiemblan las rodillas solo de pensarlo. Cada 5 de enero, a partir de las 18:00 horas, los tres Magos de Oriente, que vienen acompañados por sus pajes, carteros, malabaristas y toda su corte, pasan en sus carrozas por toda la Gran Vía pasando por la Plaza Circular y, de allí, bajan hasta el Ayuntamiento. Lanzan miles de caramelos en medio de un gran espectáculo de luz y sonido. A Diego le fascina.
Meanwhile, what Diego can't stop thinking about is the Cavalcade of the Three Magi. Since he was very young, his knees shake just from thinking about it. Every 5 January, starting at 18:00, the three Magi from the East, accompanied by their pages, mail carriers, jugglers and their entire court, parade down Gran Vía on their carriages, passing through Plaza Circular and from there, down to the City Hall. Las tradiciones de la Navidad varían en cada país. Una de las más enraizadas de estas fechas en Euskadi es la historia de ‘Olentzero’.
Christmas traditions vary from country to country. One of the most deep-rooted during this period in the Basque Country is the story of ‘Olentzero’.
Este afectuoso personaje es el encargado de anunciar la Navidad y de repartir los regalos a los niños y niñas la noche del 24 de diciembre. Durante la cena de Nochebuena, en la que algunas familias también se disfrazan, se cantan villancicos y se juega a las cartas. En esta cena, antes de que llegue el Olentzero, hay quien hace el ritual del pan. Este alimento se bendice haciendo la señal de la cruz con un cuchillo. Otra de las tradiciones es la de comer castañas o desayunar chocolate con churros el 1 de enero, día en el que muchas personas en Bizkaia tienen como sana costumbre subir al monte Gorbeia. El árbol de Navidad, los nacimientos y los belenes son otras de las referencias navideñas en Euskadi. Acudir a ver la iluminación navideña es también habitual para adentrarse de lleno en el espíritu de la Navidad.

Navidad llegan en dos fechas marcadas por las niñas y niños. La primera es la del lunes 23 de diciembre. Un día en el que nuestro querido Olentzero, baja desde su caserío a la ciudad. Desde ese instante, es el gran protagonista de un increíble desfile junto a Mari Domingi, que nos saluda subida en su enorme oca. Les acompañan otros maravillosos personajes de la mitología vasca como son los ‘galtzagorris’ (duendes), el ‘Basajaun’ (el señor de los bosques), o las ‘lamiak’ (sirenas y hadas). Este desfile se inicia a las 18 horas desde la Plaza Moyúa y concluye en el Teatro Arriaga. Además, en la mañana del 24 de diciembre, desde las 11 a las 14 horas, Olentzero recibe en el Teatro Arriaga a las niñas y niños que quieran pedirle regalos y entregar sus cartas. El domingo 5 de enero del 2020, por la tarde, desde las 18 a las 19.30 horas, los más pequeños disfrutarán de una fascinante Cabalgata para pedir regalos a los tres Reyes Magos, que vienen acompañados de sus pajes, de zancudos y de otros muchos artistas en un desfile de ensueño con carrozas, teatro de calle, danza, espectáculo de luz y sonido. Esta Cabalgata recorre la Gran Vía, pasa por la Plaza Moyúa y luego por la Plaza Circular con final en el Ayuntamiento de Bilbao. 46
Las notas musicales de la Navidad En cualquier momento podéis sorprenderos con grupos de personas entonando bellas melodías por la ciudad. Y es que la música coral es protagonista en estas fechas y hace las delicias de los bilbaínos/as y de sus visitantes durante el mes de diciembre en distintas iglesias y calles de Bilbao. Se genera así una atmósfera festiva gracias a coros, orfeones y grupos de la Escuela Municipal de Música de Bilbao. La alegría de los cotillones de fin de año Muchas personas que vienen a pasar la Navidad a Bilbao nos preguntan dónde pueden despedir el año y comenzar el nuevo. Así que se suman a las propuestas que se preparan en la ciudad el día de fin de año y disfrutan en los cotillones, fiestas con baile y juerga continua que se celebran la noche del 31 de diciembre. La diversión está asegurada y alguna de las mejores opciones es decidirse entre los cotillones que se organizan en los hoteles de la ciudad para pasar una Nochevieja inolvidable. This Cavalcade goes down Gran Vía, passes through Plaza Moyúa and then Plaza Circular, ending at Bilbao Town Hall.
The musical notes of Christmas At any moment you could be surprised by groups of people singing beautiful songs around the city. El servicio de barquilla funciona las 24 horas del día, a 0,40 € el viaje. La pasarela está abierta de 10.00 de la mañana hasta la puesta de sol.
