En 1978, cuando contaba 50 años, Warhol se embarcó en la producción de una obra monumental, titulada Sombras (Shadows), que realizó con la ayuda de su entorno en la Factory. En el Museo Guggenheim Bilbao se pueden ver los 102 lienzos que componen la obra, en los que se revela la característica paleta warholiana, alegre en extremo y de tonos brillantes.

In 1978, at age 50, Warhol embarked upon the production of a monumental body of work titled Shadows with the assistance of his entourage at the Factory. The 102 canvases, all of them on view at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, show Warhol’s signature palette of bright hues with cheerful excess.

The photographs and video-installations by this British artist explore the rawest human emotions, presenting them in a fragmented way, changing our perception of image and sound. This audiovisual installation consists of eight projections.

Se trata de Intervalos negros, un óleo sobre lienzo de gran tamaño del año 1971 y de un breve periodo en el que Guerrero introdujo las cerillas como motivo protagonista de sus obras.

This new edition brings to the museum a work from the collection of the Centro José Guerrero in Granada. Entitled Black Intervals, this largescale oil on canvas dates from 1971 and is from a brief period when Guerrero introduced matches as the principal motif in his compositions.

The Bilbao Art District encompasses the area between the Maritime Museum, Albia Gardens, Colón de Larreátegui and the Paseo Abandoibarra. The most important art galleries in the city are located in this area; the Guggenheim Bilbao Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Sala Rekalde, as well as restoration workshops, and old bookshops.

Outdoor sculptures by contemporary artists such as Dalí, Chillida, Koons, Bourgeois and Kapoor are also present in an environment surrounded by outstanding architecture (from Gehry, Siza, Moneo, Pelli, Soriano, Ferrater and Isozaki right up to Calatrava).

El Azkuna Zentroa, anteriormente Alhóndiga Bilbao, fue un antiguo almacén de vino, reconvertido en centro de ocio y cultura. Edificado entre 1905 y 1909 por Ricardo Bastida, supuso una nueva idea de edificio en cuanto a su implantación, por ubicarse sobre el nuevo trazado de ciudad que nacía en esa época y tambien en cuanto a su construcción, por el empleo de técnicas novedosas desde el punto de vista estructural, siendo uno de los primeros ejemplos de arquitectura pública en hormigón armado. Finalmente, fue reformado como centro cívico polivalente, con la intervención del diseñador Philippe Starck.

Azkuna Zentroa, formerly Alhóndiga Bilbao, was an old wine warehouse, reconverted into a leisure and culture centre. Built between 1905 and 1909 by Ricardo Bastida, it was a new idea of building because of its location, in the new part of the city emerging at the time and also because of its construction, using new techniques from a structural point of view, as it was one of the first examples of public architecture built in reinforced concrete. Finally, it was refurbished as a multi-purpose civic centre, with the intervention of designer Philippe Starck.

El Funicular es el medio más emocionante, rápido (3 minutos) y típico. Se toma en la plaza de su nombre, en la calle Castaños, muy cerca del Zubi Zuri. Aquí lo llamamos “El Funi”. Se trata de un pequeño tren de motor externo que se construyó hace 100 años y que cuenta con dos vagones rojos: uno que sube y otro que baja.

Para los peques el billete cuesta unos pocos céntimos. Os dejará muy cerca del mirador que queda a la izquierda según salís. Junto a la gran pista de patinaje. ¿Habéis traído vuestros patines?

María y Diego siempre los suben en la mochila. A los pies de la pista respira la ciudad con sus avenidas, plazas y edificios. ¿Veis hacia el Este la gran chimenea de ladrillo de lo que fue la fábrica de

But you have to go up there. Artxanda is one of the hills towering over Bilbao. And the very vertical 300 m-height can be climbed on foot, by bus or by car.

But if you prefer to have fun, choose the Funicular!

The Funicular is the most exciting, fastest (3 minutes) and typical way to get there. You can board it at the square that shares its name, on Castaños street, very close to the Zubi Zuri. Here we call it “El Funi”. It is a small train with an external engine that was built 100 years ago and which has two red carriages: one going up and another going down.

For children the ticket only costs a few cents. It will leave you very close to the vantage point which is to the left when you exit it. Beside the large rollerskating rink. Did you bring your rollerskates?

María and Diego always take theirs in their rucksack. At the bottom of the rink the city breathes with its avenues, squares and buildings. Can you see to the east the large brick chimney stack which is what remains of the steel factory in Etxebarria? And

Si seguís bordeando Artxanda hacia el Oeste, observad a lo lejos una montaña cónica. Al lado se adivina el gran puerto de Santurtzi y el mar. Quizá se vislumbre un carguero que cruzará el océano.

Más al norte queda La Paloma. Es el nombre que le hemos puesto a nuestro aeropuerto. Cada poco aterriza o despega un avión, zuuuum. A menudo, las amigas y amigos de María y Diego vienen por La Paloma. En ese valle, el Txoriherri, un poco más allá, entrenan todos los días los jugadores del Athletic de Bilbao.

If you continue bordering Artxanda towards the west, you can see a cone-shaped mountain in the distance. Beside it you can make out the large port of Santurtzi and the sea. You might see a cargo ship about to cross the ocean. Further north is La Paloma. It is the name we have given to our airport.

Every once in a while an aeroplane -zoooom- takes off or lands. María and Diego´s friends often come through La Paloma. In that valley, the Txoriherri, slightly further away, Athletic de Bilbao’s players train every day.

Aunque aquí, en Artxanda, también hay campos de fútbol y senderos entre los árboles y praderas y lugares en los que hacer una barbacoa o un picnic.

Jardines de Albia / Albia gardens.

PARQUES Y JARDINES DE BILBAO JARDINES DE ALBIA El bullicio comercial y financiero de Bilbao encuentra remansos de paz en lugares como los Jardines de Albia. Tienen un frondoso arbolado en el que predominan los plátanos, que alcanzan alturas parecidas a los elegantes edificios señoriales que rodean este núcleo verde del ensanche bilbaíno. En los Jardines de Albia (4.500 metros cuadrados), un espacio para tomarse un descanso cerca del comienzo de la Gran Vía, hay tres estatuas, como la del escritor Antonio Trueba. En el centro de los jardines nos encontramos con un estanque, presidido por la figura de una mujer con sus brazos en alto sosteniendo un ánfora que vierte agua. Cerca del Palacio de Justicia está la estatua del fundador del Partido Nacionalista Vasco, Sabino Arana.

Pasear por los caminos y alamedas del bello y plácido Parque de Doña Casilda supone un placer y una evasión total.

PARKS & GARDENS IN BILBAO JARDINES DE ALBIA The commercial and financial bustle of Bilbao finds oases of peace in locations such as Jardines de Albia (Gardens of Albia). They have a thick wooded area where the banana trees stand out, reaching heights similar to some of the elegant stately buildings that surround this green area of Bilbao’s expansion district. In Jardines de Albia (4500 square metres), a space to have a rest close to the start of Gran Vía, there are three statues, such as the one of writer Antonio Trueba.

In the centre of the gardens we find a pond, presided over by the figure of a woman with outstretched arms holding an amphora that pours water. Close to the Justice Palace is the statue of the founder of the Basque Nationalist Party, Sabino Arana.

La reconversión de Bilbao de una ciudad industrial a una ciudad distinta hizo que este espacio se convirtiera en un atractivo parque. Aquí se dejó sin demoler una de las chimeneas para dejar constancia de la antigua fábrica de Etxebarria. Este Parque tiene un amplio espacio para el descanso y tiempo de ocio, con unas impresionantes vistas del centro del Bilbao. En las fiestas alberga la instalación de las atracciones de la feria.

PARQUE DE EUROPA (TXURDINAGA) El Parque Europa de Bilbao tiene una extensión de 107.000 metros cuadrados y se encuentra entre los distritos de Begoña y Otxarkoaga-Txurdinaga. Inaugurado en 1988, en el parque existe una gran extensión de áreas verdes, así como caminos asfaltados por los que muchas personas hacen running, aparatos deportivos para los mayores, zona de skate y patinaje, estanque de patos, área de juegos infantiles, un frontón, mesas de ping pong, templetes y hasta un polideportivo en

uno de los extremos del parque. Se puede llegar a él desde la estación de metro de Santutxu y Basarrate.

JARDINES DE LA CASA DE LA MISERICORDIA Es uno de los ejemplos de jardinería urbana y jardinería botánica. Un lugar de esos mágicos es el que forman los Jardines de la Casa de la Misericordia, al final de la Gran Vía y camino del nuevo campo de San Mamés. Después de haber disfrutado por el cercano Parque de Doña Casilda, se puede llegar hasta la Santa Casa de la Misericordia, un edificio de arquitectura urbana del siglo XIX de corte neoclásico con tintes neobarrocos y detalles isabelinos. Está rodeado con un ejemplo de jardín Romántico-Clásico con muchos árboles centenarios.

Además, la Villa cuenta con otros pulmones como el Pagasarri, la montaña más popular de Bilbao (671 metros); el parque de Ollargan-Montefuerte, un amplio parque periurbano que se extiende por las laderas del monte Malmasín; o los preciosos jardines de la Universidad de Deusto.

The reconversion of Bilbao from an industrial city to a different city meant that this space became an attractive park. Here they left standing one of the chimney stacks to leave evidence of the old factory in Etxebarria. This Park has ample space for resting and for leisure, with impressive views of Bilbao's city centre. During the city’s patron saint celebrations, it is where the funfair attractions are installed.

EUROPA PARK (TXURDINAGA) Bilbao’s Europa Park has an extension of 107,000 square metres and is located between the districts of Begoña and Otxarkoaga-Txurdinaga. Opened in 1988, in the park there is a large extension of green areas, as well as surfaced paths that many people jog on, exercise equipment for older people, a skateboarding and rollerskating area, a duck pond, a children's park, a ball alley, table tennis tables, bandstands and even a sports centre at one end of the park. It can be reached from the Metro station of Santutxu and Basarrate.

JARDINES DE LA CASA DE LA MISERICORDIA It is one of the examples of urban gardening and botanical gardening. One of those magical places is that formed by the Casa de la Misericordia Gardens, at the end of Gran Vía and on the way to the new San Mamés football stadium. After having enjoyed the nearby Doña Casilda Park, you can go to the Santa Casa de la Misericordia (Holy House of Mercy), a 19thcentury urban architecture building in neoclassical style with neobaroque touches and Isabelline details. It is surrounded by an example of a Romantic-Classical garden with many centenarian trees.

In addition, the city has other green lungs such as the Pagasarri, Bilbao's most popular mountain (671 metres); the Ollargan-Montefuerte park, a large periurban park that extends along the slopes of the Malmasín mountain; or the beautiful gardens of the University of Deusto.

LEO HARLEM Leo Harlem, uno de los humoristas del momento, nació llamándose Leonardo González en Matarrosa de Sil (León) en 1962. - Ha terminado su actuación en Bilbao ¿A dónde va?

A ningún lugar en concreto. Supongo que saldría tranquilamente a pasear por la calle, observaría, me iría a tomar algo con mis compañeros... !Donde me llevase la noche!

- ¿Cuándo actuó en Bilbao por primera vez y qué recuerda especialmente?

Hace muchos años desde mi primera vez en Bilbao. Recuerdo que empecé colaborando con otros artistas y con los años he tenido la oportunidad de venir solo con mis propias obras. Recuerdo los nervios antes de salir a actuar, el miedo, pero también lo bien que me ha acogido el público desde el principio. ¡Eso sí que es un lujo!

- ¿El Casco Viejo o el nuevo Bilbao?

Creo que cada parte tiene su atractivo, pero si tengo que elegir me quedo con el Casco Viejo.

- ¿Había visitado la ciudad antes de esa primera actuación?

Sí. Bilbao es una ciudad magnífica. He disfrutado muchísimo cada vez que he venido, tanto de turista como trabajando. Es un lugar para comer bien y para disfrutar a lo grande, con gente encantadora.

- Un lugar para comer o tomar algo.

No tengo ninguna preferencia. Yo soy muy de preguntar a los propios habitantes de la ciudad en la que estoy. Ellos son los que saben dónde se come bien o dónde se está tranquilo tomando algo.

- ¿Qué es lo que más le gusta de Bilbao?

Bilbao ha cambiado de forma espectacular. A mí me gusta todo: las calles, los pintxos, el carácter de la gente. Siempre me han recibido con los brazos abiertos y eso es todo un privilegio.

LEO HARLEM Leo Harlem, one of the today’s top comedians, was born Leonardo González in Matarrosa de Sil (León) in 1962. He was a finalist at El Club de la Comedia (The Comedy Club) and since then he has been constantly on television sets and in radio studios. Now he’s filling up theatres with "Hasta aquí hemos llegao".

- When was the first time you performed in Bilbao and what do you remember in particular?

It’s been many years since my first time in Bilbao. I remember I started collaborating with other artists and over the years I’ve had the chance to come by myself with my own shows. I remember the nervousness before coming on stage, the fear, but also how well the audience received me from the start.

That’s a real luxury!

- Had you visited the city before that first performance?

Yes. Bilbao is a great city. I’ve had great fun every time I’ve been here, both as a tourist

and working. It’s a place to eat well and to have a great time, with lovely people.

- Your performance in Bilbao is over. Where do you go?

Nowhere in particular. I suppose I’d just go out for a walk, to have a look around, I’d go for a drink with my colleagues... Wherever the night takes me!

The Old Quarter or the new Bilbao?

I think they each have their own charm, but if I had to choose I’d go for the Old Quarter.

- Somewhere to eat or have a drink.

I don’t have any preferences. I like to ask the locals of the city I’m in. They know best where to eat or where to have a quiet drink.

- What do you like the most about Bilbao?

Bilbao has changed spectacularly. I like it all: the streets, the pintxos, the character of the people. I’ve always been welcomed with open arms and that’s a real privilege.

BBK: CIUDAD MUSEO / BBK: MUSEUM CITY Bilbao se convertirá en un gran museo durante los días 15, 16 y 17 de septiembre (desde las 21 hasta las 24 horas), mostrando grandes obras de la historia del arte en una docena de lugares relevantes de la ciudad.

Bilbao will become a huge museum on 15, 16 and 17 September (from 21.00 to 24.00), displaying great works form the history of art in a dozen relevant locations around the city.

El público disfrutará con una técnica de realidad aumentada y holografía, que ofrecerán un inolvidable viaje artístico. El recorrido de esta original exposición contará brevemente las historias que alberga cada obra para extraer el máximo provecho de esta experiencia única.

The public will enjoy a technique of augmented reality and holography, which will offer an unforgettable artistic journey. This original exhibition will briefly tell the stories contained in each work to take full advantage of this unique experience.

Las obras estarán acompañadas de música, enriqueciendo la puesta en escena. Cada noche habrá tres visitas guiadas gratuitas, partiendo del Teatro Arriaga en los siguientes horarios: 21.00 horas (castellano) 22.00 horas (euskera) 23.00 horas (castellano). Serán guiadas por alumnos de la Facultad de Bellas Artes y de la Facultad de Letras de la UPV/EHU. Se formarán un máximo de 2 grupos por turno de 40 personas.

The works will be accompanied by music, enriching the staging. CAMPEONATO DEL MUNDO DE BÁDMINTON EN BILBAO Un evento deportivo muy atractivo. Los Campeonatos del Mundo Junior 2016 de Bádminton se celebran en el Bilbao Arena de Miribilla tras su designación por parte de Badminton World Federation.

El trabajo conjunto de la Federación Española de Bádminton y Bilbao para presentar una candidatura atractiva y novedosa fue el punto a favor para llevarse tan importante cita (2 al 13 de noviembre) por delante de una potencia como la candidatura de Jakarta respaldada por la Federación Indonesia de Bádminton y sus más de 300.000 licencias.

Se resaltan así las garantías organizativas, logísticas y económicas que dan soporte la candidatura de Bilbao 2016.

El apoyo a su vez del Consejo Superior de Deportes, Gobierno Vasco y Federación Vasca de Bádminton son vitales para presentar al máximo organismo mundial del bádminton un proyecto integral.

Las garantías en cuanto a la experiencia de la Federación Española de Bádminton para organizar eventos internacionales de primer nivel, junto con la grandiosidad de una sede como el Bilbao Arena y la riqueza cultural de una ciudad como Bilbao han sido trascendentales para lograr este evento de dos semanas de duración (2 al 13 de noviembre de 2016).

Estos Campeonatos del Mundo Júnior comprenden la competición por equipos e individual donde se dan cita cerca de 1.000 jugadores de más 50 países con una atención televisiva e informativa de primer nivel, sobre todo, en los países asiáticos, doce mil pernoctaciones y una treintena de medios de comunicación de todo el mundo acreditados.

WORLD BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIP IN BILBAO A very attractive sporting event. The 2016 World Junior Badminton Championship is being held at the Bilbao Arena in Miribilla after its designation by the Badminton World Federation.

The joint work of the Spanish Badminton Federation and Bilbao to present an attractive and new candidacy was the favourable point to host such an important event (2 to 13 November) ahead of a powerful candidacy by Jakarta backed by the Indonesian Badminton Federation and its more than 300,000 licences.

This highlights the organisational, logistic and economic guarantees that support the candidacy of Bilbao 2016.

The support in turn of the Higher Sports Council, the Basque Government and the Basque Badminton Federation of vital to present before the world's top badminton body a comprehensive project.

The guarantees regarding the experience of the Spanish Badminton Federation to organise toplevel international events, along with the grandeur of a venue like the Bilbao Arena and the cultural wealth of a city such as Bilbao have been key to host this two-week event (2 to 13 November 2016).

This World Junior Championship includes team and individual competitions that will gather close to 1000 players from more than 50 countries, with significant television and news coverage, particularly in Asian countries, 12,000 overnight stays and some 30 accredited media outlets from around the world. Bilbao’s streets will be the setting for the eighth consecutive year, starting at 20:30, for a unique and spectacular sporting event. EL TILO El Tilo es el emblemático café de El Arenal.

Ha reabierto porque se resiste a su desaparición. En 2010 ya se puso la etiqueta de centenario. Este establecimiento es el punto de reunión ideal antes de asistir al cercano Teatro Arriaga, o para tomar un buen café en cualquier momento. Está situado en los bajos de una Casa Palacio y sus paredes se encuentran decoradas con unos maravillosos frescos de Juan de Aranoa. En el local hay un dibujo del tilo que ocupó antiguamente la

Plaza de El Arenal, plantado en 1809 y de donde viene el nombre del café. En 1941 un rayo terminó con el legendario árbol. El Tilo es una parte importante de la historia de Bilbao y de El Arenal, uno de los emplazamientos más transitados de la ciudad.

GRAN CAFÉ EL MERCANTE Una historia similar se da con su vecino Café Boulevard, que regresó a la primera página del día a día de la capital vizcaína. Lo hizo reconvertido en el Gran Café El Mercante. Tras reabrir sus puertas, se recobró así una mítica historia que se remonta a 1871. En sus mesas se citaron artistas como Miguel de Unamuno, Blasco Ibáñez y Ortega y Gasset, o el fotógrafo de guerra Robert Capa, que lo inmortalizó en la Guerra Civil. Su actual nombre recuerda el pasado de Bilbao, en referencia a los barcos de mercancías que surcaban la ría. El Gran Café Mercante mantiene además sus originales elementos Art-Decó.

EL TILO El Tilo is an emblematic café in El Arenal. It has reopened because it refuses to disappear.

In 2010 it reached its 100th anniversary. This establishment is the ideal meeting point before going to the nearby Arriaga Theatre, or to have a good coffee at any time. It is located on the ground floor of a Palatial House and its walls are decorated with marvellous frescoes

by Juan de Aranoa. In the premises there is a drawing of the lime tree that used to be in the El Arenal Square, planted in 1809 and where the name of the café comes from. In 1941 a

lightning strike destroyed the legendary tree.

El Tilo is an important part of Bilbao’s and El Arenal’s history, one of the city’s most transited locations.

Actualmente, y tras ser dotado de los últimos adelantos técnicos, realiza un recorrido de 770 metros desde Bilbao al monte Artxanda. Horario: laborales de 7:15 hrs a 22 hrs. Festivos de 8:15 hrs. a 22 hrs. en meses de verano hasta las 23 hrs.
