Editorial

Dicen que la inteligencia habita más en la pregunta que en la respuesta y que la indiscreción es más propia de ésta que de aquélla.

La función última de la literatura, incluida la infantil, está más cerca de plantear preguntas al lector, de enfrentarlo a los enigmas de la vida, que de proporcionarle respuestas y certezas. De ahí que el lector se vea obligado a buscar sus respuestas o, cuando no las encuentra, a inventarlas, o a crear aquellos sustitutos que le permitan caminar por la incertidumbre con el mínimo equilibrio necesario para huir de la desesperación. Y esto sucede la mayoría de las veces a expensas de las intenciones del propio creador. Quizá porque él tampoco tiene la respuesta a los interrogantes que el texto ofrece.

También la ilustración ofrece sus interrogantes, que en algunas ocasiones complementan las del texto, por analogía o proximidad, y en otras por-

que el trabajo del ilustrador, coautor necesario, ha de aportar sus propias dudas. Y en ese momento las piezas de dos puzzles se mezclan en nuestro intento de hacer visible la imagen que se nos resiste. Y, hasta es probable, que, en este instante, una vieja certeza nuestra se vea abandonada para que en su lugar se instale una nueva duda.

Este número de Bloc aborda el controvertido y apasionante tema de los interrogantes, de las preguntas que la literatura y la ilustración ofrecen al usuario, pero no con el ánimo de ofrecer respuestas ni soluciones. Cada uno completa la obra como puede, son las herramientas que su biografía de lector, única e intransferible, le ha otorgado. De ahí que nuestra actitud haya sido, a la hora de elaborar los contenidos, permanecer en el umbral de la duda, de la incertidumbre, y compartirlas con ustedes.

It is said that intelligence abides more in the question than in the answer and that indiscretion is more befitting of the latter than the former.

The ultimate function of literature, including children’s literature, is closer to posing questions to the reader, confronting him with the mysteries of life, rather than providing him with answers and certainties. Thus the reader is obliged to look for his own answers or if he doesn’t find them, to make them up, or to create those surrogates which enable him to make his way through uncertainty with the minimum steadiness required to escape from desperation. And this mostly happens at the expense of the intentions of the writer himself, perhaps because he himself hasn’t got the answers to the questions raised by the text. Illustrations, too, pose their own questions which sometimes complement those of the text by analogy or proximity

or sometimes because the task of the illustrator, obligatory co-author, is to add his own doubts.

And in this moment the pieces of the two puzzles are mixed up in our attempt to visualize the image which holds out against us. And it is even probable that in this moment an old certainty of ours has to be abandoned to be replaced by a new doubt.

This issue of Bloc tackles the controversial and impassioned theme of questions; questions which literature and illustration pose the user with no intention of offering answers or solutions. Each individual must finish the job how they may, using the tools which his unique, non-transferable history as a reader has granted him. From there our attitude in the moment of preparing the contents has been to remain in the shadow of doubt and uncertainty and share them with you.

Marcel Proust formuló treinta y tres preguntas genéricas para trazar el perfil psicológico de cualquier persona.

Con tan sólo dieciséis preguntas entresacadas de textos variados de la literatura infantil creemos haber obtenido un cuestionario igualmente eficaz. ¿O no?

Marcel Proust devised thirty-two generic questions to determine the psychological profile of any person. We think we have managed to obtain an equally efficient questionnaire using only sixteen questions selected from various works of children’s literature. Or have we?

lguien de cuyo nombre es preferible no acordarnos calificó la literatura infantil de ingenua. ¿Ingenua? Aunque la narrativa infantil podría caracterizarse por la cantidad de preguntas que emiten sus protagonistas, estas preguntas, en su aparente sencillez, no tienen nada de ingenuas. Releímos algunos de los textos más significativos, de ayer y de hoy, y fuimos tomando nota. Nos salió una lista de trescientas veinte preguntas. Entonces vino el trabajo de seleccionar aquellas que mejor podían trazar un perfil personal afinado.

Nos quedaron dieciséis.

Ni cortos ni perezosos sometimos a cuatro profesionales del sector al recién compuesto cuestionario de la LIJ.

Cada día les enviábamos por e-mail una pregunta, y al recibir su respuesta, les enviábamos la siguiente, y así sucesivamente hasta completarlo.

Mantuvimos en celoso secreto quién era el autor de la pregunta y la obra de dónde la habíamos extraído. Y he aquí el resultado, con todos los datos completos, para que el lector juzgue por si mismo lo intrigante que puede llegar a ser la narrativa infantil y la brillantez con la que los entrevistados salen de apuros.

Si les apetece, usen el mismo cuestionario y la misma astucia metodológica para conocer a sus amigos.

Nos encantaría que este cuestionario Bloc se expandiera por doquier.

structed LIJ questionnaire.

Every day we sent them a question and when we received a reply we sent them the next until the questionnaire was complete. We maintained totally secrecy about the author of the question and the work which was our source of the question. And here you have the results, with the information complete, so that you may judge for yourselves how intriguing children’s fiction can be and with what brilliance the interviewees get out of tight corners.

If you feel so inclined, use this same questionnaire and the same astute methodology to get to know your friends.

We would be really pleased if this Bloc questionnaire spread everywhere.

omeone, whose name it would be better not to remember once described children’s literature as ingenious.

Ingenious? Although children’s fiction can be characterised by the number of questions asked by its protagonists, these questions, despite their apparent simplicity, are far from ingenious. We re-read some of the most important texts, from both the past and the present day, and we made notes. We came up with a list of three hundred and twenty questions.

Then came the work of selecting those which could best outline an accurate personal profile. We got sixteen questions left.

Desprende gran vitalidad y optimismo, igual que cuando inició su andadura al frente de Tandem Edicions, entonces una “editorial pequeña”, que ha hecho crecer dotándola de uno de los fondos más interesantes del País Valencià, con trabajos ya imprescindibles como la adaptación de las “rondalles” de Enric Valor.

Fernando Valverde “Creé Jarcha hace 30 años con una especial vocación hacia los libros infantiles y juveniles.

No han faltado las dificultades, pero afortunadamente, la librería sigue viva”. Fernando Valverde, presidente de CEGAL, maestro y librero por vocación; funda la emblemática librería Jarcha en 1974. A finales de 2007 se arriesga un poco más con un proyecto editorial propio: Cuatro Azules.

In the Roca Umbert public library in Granollers (Barcelona), Gloria Gorchs works spiritedly and animatedly. She is one of the top specialists in children’s literature in the country, whether it’s as a critic in newspapers and magazines, as a commissioner of exhibitions, fomenting projects such as “Nascuts per Llegir” or flying to Montreuil to come back loaded up with all kinds of illustrated books.

Javier Sáez Castán’s nibs like to draw altered, unusual or ironic realities, putting forward thought-provoking worlds with giant question marks. Amongst his most attractive titles are Picopelosplumas y el hombre pájaro (Beakhairfeathers and the birdman), Pom... Pom... ¡Pompibol!, Los tres erizos (The Three Hedgehogs), Animalario Universal del Profesor Revillod (Professor Revillod’s Universal Animalary), Dos bobas mariposas (Two Silly Butterflies), Soñario o diccionario de sueños del Doctor Maravillas (Dreamary or The Dream Dictionary of Doctor Wonders)...

Rosa Serrano is slight but she fills any space in which she finds herself. She gives out great vitality and optimism, just as she did when she began her time as head of Tandem Edicions, in those days a small publishing firm, which she has helped grow, furnishing it with one of the most interesting catalogues in the Valencia region including works now considered essential such as the adaptation of the “Rondalles” by Enric Valor.

“I created Jarcha 30 years ago with a special interest in literature for children and adolescents. There have been many difficulties, but luckily, the bookshop is still going.” Fernando Valverde, president of CEGAL, qualified teacher and librarian by vocation, founded the emblematic bookshop Jarcha in 1974. At the end of 2007 he risked a little bit more with his own publishing project, Cuatro Azules.

¿Se puede saber quién eres y adónde vas?

G. G. —Soy hija-madre-zurda-eterna inquilina-virgo-morena-poco aventurera-chismosa-madrugadoraadicta al chocolate blanco y bibliotecaria. Y no voy muy lejos, el tren con el que viajo nunca se aleja demasiado de Barcelona.

J. S. C. —Si lo supiera, no sería lo que soy. Aunque tal vez sí iría adonde voy.

¿Y eso es divertido?

G. G. —Los días pares me visto cómodamente con esta rutina y para divertirme me basta cualquier sorpresa que aparezca debajo de una piedra. Pero los días impares...¡ay! los días impares sueño con coger el tren en dirección contraria...

J. S. C. —Nunca me ha obsesionado especialmente divertirme; a veces incluso he disfrutado enormemente de una buena sesión de aburrimiento.

Pero, ciñéndome a la pregunta y hablando en términos generales, podría afirmar que hasta ahora todo ha sido satisfactorio.

J. S. C. —If I knew, I wouldn’t be what I am. Although perhaps I would go where I am going.

And is it fun?

G. G. —On even days I wear comfortable clothes as a routine and whatever surprise I find under a stone is sufficient to amuse me. But on odd days... Oh dear! On odd days I dream of taking a train in the opposite direction...

Tell us who you are and where you are going?

G. G. —I am a daughter, a mother, a left-hander, an eternal renter, a Virgo, dark-haired, a stay-at-home, a gossip, an early riser, a white chocolate addict and librarian. And I don’t go very far. The train I’m travelling in doesn’t stray far from Barcelona.

R. S. —Más que divertido, es apasionante. El vértigo, la emoción, el riesgo, la confirmación de las intuiciones ante un proyecto, todo es una aventura. Una aventura que te obliga a pensar y a soñar al mismo tiempo.

F. V. —Bueno, unas veces es divertido, otras muy divertido y también ocurre que a veces es un rollo.

Hago un trabajo muy variado en el que ocurren cosas bien distintas, y en la medida que puedo me lo paso estupendamente.

R. S. —I’m a precocious reader who, wherever I’ve worked – as a teacher, writer and now editor – has looked for coherence and quality, which is a way of promoting the creativity of others: writers and illustrators.

F. V. —My name is Fernando, “Nani” to almost everyone who knows me. I saw the light of day in Vigo and I moved to Madrid. For more than three decades I’ve worked with books and book people. I let myself be carried by the flow of this environment and hope to arrive close to the Atlantic one day.

J. S. C. —I’ve never been particularly concerned about having fun; sometimes I’ve even really enjoyed a good session of boredom. But, limiting myself to the question and speaking in general terms, I can say that so far everything has been satisfactory.

R. S. —More than fun – it’s thrilling. The dizziness, the emotion, the risk, the confirmation of ones intuition before the project, all is an adventure which makes you think and dream at the same time.

F. V. —Well, sometimes it’s fun, sometimes it’s a lot of fun and sometimes it’s a bore. My work is very varied and involves lots of different things and as far as I can I have a splendid time.

¿Qué es una vida humana?

G. G. —“Un absurdo trajín”, como dice la canción.

J. S. C. —Una vida humana es algo que, por encima de todo, depende del artículo. Nunca es tan sólo una vida humana, sino esa vida humana.

¿Crees que un muerto está muerto para siempre, o crees que puede resucitar?

G. G. —Aunque morir sea una gran aventura, en cualquier caso creo que es la última.

J. S. C. —Creo en la resurrección de la carne, como se anuncia en el Credo.

Sin embargo, no sé qué quiere decir exactamente la palabra “siempre”. Su significado se me escapa hacia lo profundo de un pozo.

Supongo que esa sensación de vértigo es parte de la palabra.

What is a human life?

G. G. —“An absurd commotion” as the song has it.

F. V. —Si tuviera que resumirlo, me quedo con la idea de “tiempo”.

Tiempo de crecer, de amar, de relacionarnos con el entorno y, ante todo, tiempo para conocernos y conocer. Tiempo para ser feliz, y procurar felicidad. Para sonreir y para ser agradecidos por la suerte de vivir.

R. S. —No, resucitar no creo que lo haga, pero me cuesta pensar que todo se acaba con la muerte.

F. V. —Si te mueres ya estás listo.

No obstante, la muerte es, muchas veces, una metáfora para explicar situaciones de derrota, fracaso, decepción. Resucitar es darse una oportunidad para volver a vivir.

Una obligación para seguir disfrutando de la existencia.

J. S. C. —It’s something that depends above all on the article. It’s never just a human life but that human life.

Do you take it as a dead man is dead for good, or do he come alive again?

G. G. —Although dying may be a great adventure, I believe it’s the last.

R. S. —Un trayecto lleno de paradas con descubrimientos y encuentros maravillosos, con pérdidas dolorosas. Es también una construcción.

J. S. C. —I believe in the resurrection of the flesh as announced in the Apostle’s Creed. Nevertheless, I’m not sure what is meant by the phrase “for good”. Its meaning falls into a bottomless pit. I suppose that this feeling of vertigo is part of the phrase.

R. S. —A journey full of stops with marvellous discoveries and meetings and painful losses. It’s also a structure.

F. V. —If I had to summarise it I would say “time”. Time to grow, to love, to relate to ones surroundings and, above all, time to get to know each other and to learn. Time to be happy and to obtain happiness.

Time to smile and to be thankful for the luck of being alive.

R. S. —No, I don’t think we are resurrected but it is difficult to believe that death is the end of everything.

F. V. —If you die you then your time has come. Nevertheless, death is often a metaphor to explain situations of defeat, failure and deception. To come back from the dead is to give oneself an opportunity to return to life. An obligation to carry on enjoying existence.

¿Qué es lo que no consentirías?

G. G. —Un verano sin horchata, un niño sin su dosis de cosquillas, perder la ilusión, un día sin un abrazo, un libro sin ninguna frase genial... y por encima de todo, la farsa políticoeconómica que mueve el mundo.

G. G. —Time: two or three hours a day to waste peacefully.

F. V. —It’s a measure. A measure of what we do while we are alive. It’s always what we have still to do. It’s the struggle between the possibilities of doing, which are always infinite, and the reality of achieving them, which are truly finite.

J. S. C. —No hay libros en abstracto, así que a cada libro habrá que preguntarle por sus propios méritos.

Is that what being an adult is about – doing and saying things which children can’t understand?

G. G. —And not just that! Adults themselves don’t understand the vast majority of things they do and say.

J. S. C. —I believe that human beings do not undergo a strict metamorphosis like the amphibians or moths. That is to say that there are lots of ways of being a child or an adult. The only thing that seems proved is the order: first the child and then the adult.

J. S. C. —There’s no such thing as a book in the abstract, so each book has to be judged on its own merits.

iguel Vázquez Freire (Corcubión, A Coruña, 1951) transita por el misterio de la palabra con la seguridad de quien lo hace conocedor de los caminos del saber y de sus raíces. Y lo hace consciente de que la palabra siempre guarda para sí un último significado que se nos resiste, aquél que da verdadera razón de lo nombrado, aquél que sólo se revela al poeta, máximo guardador de los últimos significados de las palabras.

Profesor de filosofía, autor de textos educativos de esta materia, traductor de Descartes, dinamizador de grupos pedagógicos que reflexionan sobre la materia. Todo esto le ha hecho penetrador de la palabra y de su capacidad creadora.

Lo que le ha llevado dar a la LIJ magníficas obras, tanto en el teatro como en la narrativa, en muchas de las cuales anidan el misterio y la fantasía. Aquél como constatación de la imposibilidad del

Miguel knows how to follow the tracks of words in order to expose the mysteries which they imprison as soon as they have been converted into text.

Miguel knows that we are the word, and that the word is, for human beings, a blast of heat which guides us as the Merlin ring does for Arno in his novel Proxecto Pomba Dourada. If we are capable of unravelling its meaning it leads us to salvation. Miguel Vázquez Freire loves the word as a place of refuge for human understanding, as an open destination for the man who looks for the entrance gates to his own heart. But he also knows the word as the most mysterious of human talents.

iguel Vázquez Freire (Corcubión, La Corunna, 1951) navigates the mystery of the word with the security of one who knows the ways of knowledge and its roots. And he does it conscious that words always keep an ultimate meaning which resists us, that which gives the true information about the named object, that which is only revealed to the poet, highest keeper of the ultimate meaning of words.

A professor of Philosophy, author of educational texts in this subject, translator of Descartes, dynamo for pedagogic groups who discuss the matter; all this has made him a fathomer of the word and of its creative capacity.

This has led him to give magnificent works to the LIJ, as much for the theatre as in narrative prose, in many of which mystery and fantasy make their home. The former as a confirmation of

he modern mystery story was only born after the lights of the Enlightenment had tried to shine the blinding spotlight of reason on the last corner of the world and life. But right away language keeps us alert to the paradox of such a desire. When the light reaches its maximum intensity, instead of improving our

vision it blinds us. The Romantics, who we should stop regarding as an antienlightenment reaction in order to see them as its indispensable benefit understood this well. It was they, the Romantics, who helped to show that excessive light was blinding that same humanity it intended to enlighten. It was a light which

No me atrevería a asegurar que El Cascanueces y el Rey de los ratones sea el primer cuento de terror moderno para niños, pero bien podría serlo. Para comprender el porqué, observemos su diferencia con

respeto a otro cuento que, siendo aparentemente de un género común, carece en mi opinión de esa modernidad. Hablo de El soldadito de plomo de Andersen. En este, el universo animado de los juguetes permanece totalmente al margen del universo humano. Aunque, bien mirado, no del todo: el narrador nos hará observar que la

And Romantics like E. T. A. Hoffman turned their attention to these areas.

I wouldn’t dare to guarantee that The Nutcracker and the King of the Mice is the first modern terror story for children, but it could well be. To understand why, let’s look at how it differs from another story

which, apparently from the same genre, in my opinion lacks this modernity. I am talking about The Tin Soldier by Andersen.

In this story the animated world of the toys remains totally on the margin of the human world. Although, on careful examination, not entirely: the narrator makes us see that the brutal and pointless act of

It is as if the good man Andersen, a modern man in spite of himself, were saying: I know that you won’t believe it, but

malgré lui, nos estuviese diciendo: ya sé que vosotros no lo creéis, pero lo cierto es que el mundo de las maravillas (el mundo de los cuentos de siempre), ese mundo que la razón quiere apartar en tanto que, cosa del pasado, sigue vivo en nosotros. ¿Cómo, si no, explicar que haya niños malos capaces de hacer cosas así?

Otro es el modo de Hoffman. Marie, la niña protagonista de El Cascanueces y el Rey de los ratones, sí sabe que los muñecos cobran vida por la noche y sí afrontan valerosamente los ataques despiadados del ejército del terrible Rey de los ratones. Lo sabe y vive con ellos sus terribles aventuras. Pero es sólo ella quien lo sabe, mientras que los adultos no sólo lo ignoran sino que, cuando ella se lo confiesa, o bien lo toman a risa, o bien, preocupados por la insistencia de la niña, lo interpretan como un problema de salud. He aquí la modernidad: la conciencia, en el ámbito del propio relato (no sólo en la voz del narrador,

the sure thing is that the world of wonders (the world of the same old stories), this world which reason wants to separate as a thing of the past, still lives in us. How can we otherwise explain that there are bad children capable of doing such things?

The style of Hoffman is different.

Marie, the protagonist of The Nutcracker and the King of the Mice knows that the dolls come to life at night and bravely confront the pitiless attacks of the army of the frightening King of the Mice. She knows and she shares with them their terrible adventures. But it is only she that knows this, whilst the adults not only are unaware of it but also, when she tells them about it, either take it is as a joke, or, worried by the girl’s insistence, interpret it as a sign of a health problem. That is where modernity lies: the awareness, in the context of the story (not just in the voice of the narrator, but in the words of

De lo maravilloso a lo fantástico

Tzevan Todorov, en su imprescindible ensayo sobre lo fantástico, distingue lo “maravilloso” de lo “fantástico” porque, para él, este calificativo sólo cabe atribuirlo a un género literario moderno. Así pues, el cuento maravilloso sólo impropiamente puede ser calificado de fantástico. Para que se dé lo fantástico es preciso que en el interior del relato se haga visible una “vacilación” con respecto a la aparición de un fenómeno inexplicable, cosa que no ocurre en lo maravilloso. En los cuentos maravillosos existen ogros, brujas y gigantes, los animales y los objetos hablan, y muchas otras cosas escapan a las leyes de la naturaleza sin que tal sucesión de eventos extraordinarios

requieran ningún tipo de justificación. En ellos, lo “sobrenatural” es natural. Sólo en los relatos fantásticos modernos precisa explicación que un muñeco cobre vida o que un ratón dirija un ejército en formación de batalla. Y, como la explicación no existe (si existiese, ya no estaríamos en un relato fantástico sino, en todo caso, en uno de

the protagonists of the story), that the appearance of something wonderful – which is not susceptible to a rational explanation – cannot now be accepted as normal or natural.

Tzevan Todorov, in his essential essay on the fantastic, distinguishes the “wonderful” from the “fantastic” because, for him, the latter epithet can only be attributed to a modern literary genre. Thus a magical tale can only be wrongly classed as fantastic. For something to be fantastic it is necessary for the core of the tale to reveal a “vacillation” with respect to the apparition of an inexplicable phenomenon, something which does not happen in the tales of wonder. In fantasy tales there are ogres, witches and giants, animals and objects can speak and many other things break the laws of nature without such an extraordinary sequence of events requiring

any justification. In them the “supernatural” is natural. Only in modern fantastic stories does the fact that a doll comes to life or a mouse directs an army in battle formation require explanation. And, as there is no explanation (if there were one we wouldn’t be in a fantastic story, but in a rational “mystery” story, a point to

From rational mystery to irrational terror

Adolescence is the time when boys and girls no longer accept that wolves appear on paths to chat to girls. But it is also the moment when they are well disposed to turn their eyes to places where the questions are more powerful than the answers.

These are the favourite places of the two American writers. In their works rationality fights courageously against the shadows of irrationality and almost always loses: but not always, especially in the case of Poe. It can be said that Poe indicated the two directions which modern

fantasy could take: rational mystery and irrational terror. I use the term rational mystery to describe those stories where the enigma posed is resolved by deduction or at least receives a final explanation which is compatible with the scientifically accepted laws of nature. El terror irracional, por el contrario, nos enfrenta a un enigma irresoluble desde la perspectiva de la estricta racionalidad. Esto no quiere decir que en él la racionalidad no juegue ningún papel. Al contrario, también en estos relatos la búsqueda de explicación racional constituye el motor de lo narrado.

Sólo que en este caso esa explicación fracasa, aunque ese fracaso no sea necesariamente el de la razón, sino el de una racionalidad restringida. Es lo que ocurre, por ejemplo, en El caso de Charles Dexter Ward.

Irrational terror, on the contrary, confronts us with an irresolvable mystery from the perspective of strict rationality.

This does not mean that reason has no role to play in it. On the contrary in these stories the search for a rational explanation constitutes the narrative motor. Only in this case the explanation fails, although the failure is not necessarily one of reason, but the failure of a limited rationality. This is what happens, for example, in The Case of Charles Dexter Ward. In this oppressive novel by H. P. Lovecraft, the reader is introduced to the story of the descendent of an enigmatic character who is fatally dragged to a terrible end by his desire to investigate the dark side. His strange

Fernández Paz, Gisbert and others

There is a recent novel by Agustín Fernández Paz where I can find a fair number of parallels with Lovecraft’s novel.

Although the author himself considers Cartas de Invierno (Winter Letters) as the most Lovecraftian of his two terror novels, I refer here to Aire Negro (Black Air). Here we also find a sick person (in this case a woman) and a psychiatrist who, during the treatment, notices that what he had initially interpreted as a product of mental illness, has in fact a genuine origin rather than a purely mental one. It is true that, in A. F. Paz’s story the presence of the supernatural doesn’t acquire the suffocat-

Space does not permit me to dwell very long in my analysis of other variants of the mystery genre in contemporary Spanish writers who develop literature for young people. I will limit myself to pointing out two names. Joan Manuel Gisbert has created a highly personalised fantastic universe which indicates a little used path for the mysterious. In it, rational, or even scientific investigation, accepts the mysti-

O, quizá, no es sino incluso anhelo que siempre estuvo presente en el espíritu de la humanidad y que es la otra cara del ansia de saber. El misterio nos recuerda que la razón nunca podrá dar cuenta de todo, que no hay luces sin sombras, que no hay auténtico saber sin reconocimiento de sus límites. Que son también los límites de la palabra, de las palabras. Hay un fascinante álbum del ilustrador Chris van Allsburg, Los misterios del Sr. Burdick, en que las palabras son sólo el reducido e incompleto pie de unas extraordinarias imágenes. Imágenes que en una primera mirada semejan ser la descripción realista de espacios de una apacible cotidianidad. Hasta que una mirada más demorada descubre que, en ese espacio aparentemente cotidiano, se esconde lo insólito. Y el lector no quiere explicaciones.

mystery which is born of mistrust of reason with excessive pretensions. Or, perhaps, it is nothing but the desire which is ever-present in the spirit of humanity and which is the other side of the need to know. Mystery stories remind us that reason can never take everything into account, that there is no light without shade, that there is not true knowledge without the recognition of its limits which are also the limits of the word, of words.

There is a fascinating picture book by Chris van Allsburg, The Mysteries of Harris Burdick, in which words form the reduced and incomplete basis for some extraordinary images: images which at first glance appear to be a realistic description of spaces of a gentle everydayness, until a more lingering look reveals that in this everyday space the unexpected is hidden.

And the reader does not want explanations he just wants to let himself be carried along.

uando comienzas a hablar, estás siempre buscando el porqué de las cosas. Cuando aparecen personas desconocidas (primos, amigos, visitantes) o animales, cada uno de ellos se propone como un acertijo: “¿quién es?”, “¿cómo se llama?”. Una imagen nueva, una pregunta.

Y cuando no obtienes respuesta, fabulas, rodeas de una ficción biográfica a esa persona o ese animal que no conoces.

O confabulas, monologando con seres inanimados de felpa o de trapo. Le concedes un alma a quien no tiene alma.

En la mirada muda de la muñeca de trapo, en los ojos fijos del osito o de quién sabe qué extraño animal de mentira, encuentras el asentimiento que te ayuda a ver, a rever, lo que no tienes del todo claro. Más adelante, cuando seas mayor, sustituirás la forma humana o animal por un interlocutor menos reconocible: consultarás con la almohada y

le propondrás un dilema, una cuestión próxima al enigma.

Vivir significa, en todo caso, dar respuestas. Fuera de los discursos rígidos —esas cosas de la moral de tres al cuarto, de la publicidad compulsiva, de la verdad mayúscula que se postula como guía y acaba marcando los límites de una frontera: “mantenerse a raya”, se dice—, te verás invadido por un torrente de preguntas. Encontrarás vericuetos, meandros, desvíos inesperados: irás articulando tus deseos, tu vocación en sentido amplio, con aquellos imprevistos que te exigen resolver adivinanzas o enigmas, charadas o acertijos.

Porque la muerte también es misterio, conciencia de que eres vulnerable, de que no hay forma de escabullirse

Living means, in any case, coming up with answers. Away from formal debate – these events of low quality morality, of compulsive publicity, of truth in capital letters which claims to be a guide and ends up delimiting a frontier: “thus far and no farther”, they say –, you will be inundated with a torrent of questions.

You will find rough ground, meanders, and unexpected detours: you will go on articulating your desires, your vocation in its widest sense, with those unforeseen which will require you to solve conundrums or enigmas, charades or riddles.

Mathematics will pose you problems: “How many three-figure integers are there such that all of the digits are different and which give a larger number when written in reverse order?”. Astronomy poses the mysteries

of the skies. Music, the enigma of the rhythmic sequence of rests and sounds.

Poetry (“and you are asking me about it?”), the uncertainty of the heavens, the arithmetic of rhythm, the “swords like lips”. Your dreams will bring you beautiful deliriums, deliciously pleasurable, persecutory, black or as anxious as nightmares, which also hide an apparently incoherent interior law.

And when you begin to pull on the threads of a love intrigue, it will become patent that there exists a science of caresses, that not all kisses are welcome and that words are not necessary. And you will ask “why?” once again. You will ask “How is it possible?”. You will ask yourself, the pillow, your reflection in the mirror what time has done to you. And along with your image, a new enigma, the shapes of your defunct loved ones will parade before you. Because death is a mystery too, the awareness

In the silent gaze of the cloth dolly, in the fixed eyes of the teddy bears or who knows what strange non-existent animal, you find the confirmation which helps you to see, to see again, that which you don’t have entirely clear. Later on, when you’re older you will substitute the human or animal form for a much less recognizable interlocutor: you will consult your pillow

that you are vulnerable, that there is no way of escape when this neutral being, neither male nor female, who doesn’t even have its own name because it has within itself the names of all those who have gone, knocks on your door.

e ha colado una imagen. Se ha colado un enigma en la miga del pan. ¿Es la diosa Deméter o Ceres la que brota? ¿La que labra surcos? ¿La que desmigaja? ¿La que fecunda? ¿Y si, según ciertos pareceres, Ceres fuese la forma femenina del dios Pan? ¿Y si la imagen y el enigma fueran signos de las facultades curativas de la diosa Panacea?

as palabras se instalan en la mesa y, como potentes escoplos, se escurren, taladran, labran la tabla día tras día. Así nacen los alimentos, y cada hueco adopta la forma de los vasos, los platos y los cubiertos que para leer hacen falta. El lector es como una mesa bien puesta.

sidro Ferrer nació en Madrid, se graduó en Arte Dramático y Escenografía en Zaragoza, estudió mimo en París, trabajó en Barcelona en el estudio del diseñador gráfico Peret, y se trasladó a Huesca hace 12 años, donde vive desde entonces.

Su dedicación inicial fue el teatro, pero desde hace 20 años su trabajo se ha desarrollado en el ámbito del diseño gráfico, y prueba de su madurez en esta actividad es el Premio Nacional de Diseño que obtuvo en el año 2002. No es ésta su única labor creativa, sus eficaces incursiones en el territorio de la ilustración de libros infantiles, y no tan infantiles, también le merecieron el Premio Nacional de Ilustración unos años después, en 2006, por su libro Una casa para el abuelo, sobre texto de Grasa Toro.

sidro Ferrer was born in Madrid, graduated from the Saragossa School of Dramatic Arts, studied mime in Paris, worked in the studio of the graphic designer Peret in Barcelona and moved to Huesca twelve years ago where he has lived since.

At first he dedicated himself to the theatre, but for the last twenty years his work has been within the field of graphic design, and proof of his maturity in this field is the National Design Prize which he was awarded in 2002. It’s not his only creative work.

His efficient incursions into the territory of the illustration of children’s books and not- so children’s books earned him the National Illustration Prize a few years later in 2006 for his book Una casa para el abuelo (A House For Grandfather) on a text by Grasa Toro, which was published by

Ediciones Sinsentido, and which had been initially published in France by Editions Thierry Magnier.

trativas o clarificadoras. En estos casos en que la ilustración deja de estar, única y exclusivamente, al servicio del texto, puede plantear enigmas y abrir interrogantes.

Depende del propósito del ilustrador y de la finalidad de la ilustración. En principio la ilustración es una herramienta al servicio de la comprensión, la ilustración nace como apoyo a la percepción para dar luz al entendimiento. Si nos atenemos a su definición, la ilustración cumple la función clarificadora de dar respuestas o por lo menos de despejar dudas. No olvidemos que la ilustración, al contrario que el dibujo que es autosuficiente y responde a la voz de su autor, está en función del encargo, al servicio del texto y por tanto subordinado a la voz ajena. Pero también es cierto que la ilustración tiene la capacidad de trascender y rebasar el espacio estanco de su definición y expandirse a otras áreas del entendimiento que no sean las puramente demos-

¿Qué quieres decir con que el dibujo es autosuficiente?

Que el dibujo, de la misma manera que el arte, nace de la voluntad y no se somete a la disciplina de ningún argumento externo, mientras que la ilustración nace atada al encargo y por tanto al interés del cliente.

En tu Libro de las preguntas, Pablo Neruda plantea metafóricas interrogantes sobre el mundo. Las imágenes que tú propones ¿tratan de ser respuestas a esas preguntas, o pretenden añadir más incógnitas?

El Libro de las preguntas es un texto complejo, muy complejo de ilustrar. Se trata de una recopilación de preguntas sin respuesta, más cerca del ensayo filosófico que del libro enciclopédico. Es un libro múltiple. Puedes leerlo de corrido o a plazos, ordenadamente

uis Landero states that literature unlike other forms of fiction, poses questions and mysteries to people. What about illustration? Does it pose mysteries or does it rather give the answers?

It depends on the intention of the illustrator and the purpose of the illustration. In principle, illustration is a tool in the service of comprehension.

Illustration begins as a support to perception to throw light on understanding. If we stick to this definition, illustration carries out its clarifying function of giving answers or at least clearing up doubts. Let’s not forget that illustration, in contrast to drawing, which is self-sufficient and responds to the voice of the author, is in the nature of an assignment, at the service of the text and therefore subordinate to an external voice. But it is also true that illustration has the capacity to transcend and overflow the confines of its

definition and expand into other areas of understanding which are not purely demonstrative or clarificatory. On these occasions when illustration ceases being only and exclusively at the service of the text it can pose enigmas and stimulate questions.

What do you mean when you say that drawing is self-sufficient?

That a drawing, in the same way as Art, is born of the will and does not submit to the discipline of any external argument, while an illustration is born tied to the commission and therefore to the interests of the client.

In your Libro de las preguntas (The Book of Questions), Pablo Neruda asks metaphorical questions about the world.

Are the images you put forward attempting to be answers to these questions or do they aim to add more unknowns?

The Libro de las preguntas (The Book of Questions) is a complex text, very difficult to illustrate. It is a compilation of questions with no answer, closer to a philosophical essay than an encyclopaedia. It’s a multifaceted book. You can read it through in one go or in instalments, from beginning to end or jumping randomly from page to page. On a first reading, many alternatives presented themselves to me. The most

the job seemed very stimulating to me.

The text is related to poetic formulae which had especially interested me for some time because of the visual charge they

have: the Greguerías of Gómez de la Serna (which I had worked on before), the Lunerías of Lorca, and some avant-guard experiments. I had to give some time to

Por lo tanto, las ilustraciones no podían caer en el error de intentar responder a ninguna de las preguntas formuladas, en caso de hacerlo hubieran traicionado el texto poético, hubieran dado respuestas equivocadas y proporcionado soluciones falsas, y es que cada pregunta tiene tantas respuestas como lectores.

Al eliminar la posibilidad de desentrañar y responder gráficamente a las preguntas retóricas de Neruda, uno de los caminos posibles, era sumarme a la formulación de nuevas preguntas, construir un entramado de acertijos plásticos que incidiesen en la intención del poeta.

Pensamos que la mayoría de los creadores no tienen la respuesta a por qué su obra es como es, sino que, como mucho, lo que guarda son perplejidades de su propio trabajo. Sin embargo, existen artistas que son capaces —al menos ellos lo creen— de responder ordenadamente

Having eliminated the possibility of dissecting and answering Neruda’s rhetorical questions graphically, one of the possible approaches was to join in with the formulation of new questions, constructing a framework of artistic puzzles which reacted with the intention of the poet.

Encontrar respuestas válidas a los procesos creativos es una tarea nada fácil, mi propia experiencia me dice que, en esta profesión, casi toda argumentación es “a posteriori”.

Sobre lo que antecede a la explicación, mantengo el silencio, porque no sé muy bien cómo nombrarlo, si inspiración, chispa o intuición.

Por otro lado, siempre he sentido una inclinación hacia lo incomprensible, me fascina aquello para lo que no puedo encontrar respuesta, aquello que se escapa a mi entendimiento pero que es capaz de estremecerme. Como bien dice Enrique Vila-Matas “entender puede ser una condena, y no entender, la puerta que se abre”.

Cuando dices que toda argumentación es a posteriori, ¿sería igual la de un dise-

valid responses to the creative process is a far from easy task. My own experience tells me that, in this profession, almost all argument is a posteriori. About what comes before the explanation, I say nothing, because I am not very sure what to call it, inspiration, spark or intuition.

On the other hand, I have always had a predilection for the incomprehensible.

I am fascinated by things which I cannot explain, things which escape my understanding but are capable of making me shiver. As Enrique Vila-Matas says so well, “Understanding can be a prison sentence and not understanding can be what opens the gates.”

When you say that all argument is a posteriori, does this apply equally to a designer and an illustrator referring to their own work?

Designers, just as much as illustrators, are often required to explain their work with

La resolución del Libro de las preguntas la realizaste en blanco y negro. ¿Obedece a una opción premeditada y consciente, o bien fue un enfado tuyo con el cian, el magenta y el amarillo? ¿O quizá, acaso, el amarillo, que tanto protagonismo tiene en el texto, convenció a los otros dos colores para irse de crucero en un barco que tú habías dibujado?

Por un lado están las características de Media Vaca que edita libros a dos tintas.

Esta limitación me parece un reto importante y una pauta que funciona como un muro de contención. Como una norma

You ended up completing the Libro de las preguntas in black and white. Was this the result of a premeditated, conscious choice or was it more in annoyance with cyan, magenta and yellow? Or perhaps, yellow, which has such protagonism in the text convinced the other two colours to go on a cruise that you had drawn?

On the one hand there are the characteristics of Media Vaca which publishes two-tone books. This limitation seems to me to be an important challenge and a guideline which functions as a containing wall; like a rule which obstructs and at the same time specifies; a guideline which prevents you from not beating about the

Por otro lado, me gusta la parquedad del blanco y negro, y pienso que el color puede llegar a convertirse en un recurso superficial y meramente estético. En este libro buscaba un lenguaje gráfico que dialogara con las palabras sin restar protagonismo a estas, y que conviviera con ellas de manera natural, sin aspavientos ni gestos excesivos.

La mayor parte de las fotos que encontré de Neruda, su vida y sus lugares estaban en blanco y negro, esto me condicionó mucho a la hora de pensar y concretar el libro, ya que en todo momento quería que las ilustraciones fueran de la mano de las palabras y pese a la insistencia del amarillo en el texto (o precisamente por eso) preferí la sobriedad del blanco y negro.

El amarillo, el azul y el verde ya están implícitos en las palabras y por tanto en los ojos del lector. No es necesario pintar de amarillo para poder ver el amarillo.

bush. On the other hand, I like the frugality of black and white and I think that colour can become a superficial and merely aesthetic recourse. In this book I was looking for a graphic language which would dialogue with the words without taking away their protagonism and which would coexist with them in a natural way, without exaggerations or excessive gestures. Most of the photos of Neruda I found, his life and places, were in black and white. This influenced me a great deal at the time of thinking and deciding about the book because I always wanted the illustrations to go hand in hand with the words and despite the stressing of yellow in the text (or maybe because of it), I preferred the soberness of black and white.

Yellow, blue and green are already implied in the words and hence in the reader’s eyes. It’s not necessary to paint in yellow to be able to see yellow.

Does the decision to create threedimensional spaces in the book, little scenes in which the actions take place, respond to a plastic or a stylistic plan or does it intend to recreate the text by means of conceptual resolution?

Both things. There is an aesthetic part and a conceptual part. Aesthetics has a bad press because we think that all aesthetics is superficial, but we must not confuse aesthetics with style. Aesthetics is also functional. Illustration and the design of objects are not only about physiognomy and in this case the form is linked to the idea. I conceived the book as a little theatre, as a fair booth, in the style of a cabinet of unusual objects, in the same way that Neruda conceived his houses as eccentric museums where popular, artistic and scientific expression coexist in a natural way.

The illustrations refer us not only to the words with which they coexist but to the life and works of Neruda himself: books,

Como muy gráficamente define Arnal Ballester, nuestro trabajo a menudo es el de “maquillador de cadáveres” Neruda aparece algunas veces sonriendo, sobre todo cuando conduce la maquina de un tren y especialmente cuando en el teatrillo de guiñol final apalea a Nixon y a Pinochet, pero en la mayoría de las ocasiones permanece serio, incluso apesadumbrado cargando esa maleta que parece pesar mucho. ¿Qué le inquieta?

¿Y cuántos mundos caben en esa maleta?

Tantos como uno pueda imaginarse.

Están cerca, muy cerca, porque ambos, el abuelo y Neruda, más allá de las coincidencias volumétricas en el planteamiento plástico, tienen que ver con mi experiencia de la muerte.

para el abuelo, de Grassa Toro, está sonriente desde que aparece en escena. ¿De qué sonríe? ¿Hay alguna intención, en esa sonrisa, de aliviar lo dramático de la situación?

Lo dramático no es la muerte, el dramatismo se encuentra en el valor que le damos a la muerte. El abuelo sonríe porque así vi a mi padre despedirse de este mundo y por que ese abuelo nos recuerda el oxímoron de Santa Teresa de Jesús que nos devuelve a la vida; muero porque vivo, vivo porque muero.

You say that aesthetics has a bad reputation – Would it not be partly because in its development it forgot about ethics?

And how many worlds can fit in that suitcase?

In a way. Aesthetics in the contemporary world does not put itself at the service of the search for beauty, but has converted itself in an instrument of concealment. It is used to camouflage, decorate or sweeten realities which are not as lovely as appearances would suggest. As Arnal Ballester so graphically put it, our job is often as a “make-up artist for corpses”.

Compared to him, the grandfather in Una casa para el abuelo (A House for Grandfather), by Grassa Toro, is smiling right from the first moment he appears.

What is he smiling about? Is that smile an attempt to alleviate the drama of the situation?

n interrogante además de ser un signo ortográfico es una pregunta. Sobre las preguntas existen muchas dudas. ¿Son antes las preguntas o las respuestas? ¿Es necesario una pregunta para cada respuesta? ¿Es obligatorio responder? ¿Es necesario preguntar? ¿Qué distancia separa una pregunta de una respuesta? ¿Todo lo que va entre interrogantes es una pregunta? ¿Podría repetir la pregunta?

Unas pocas claves para despejar algunos interrogantes: Existen muchas más respuestas que preguntas.

Todo está lleno de respuestas: las enciclopedias, los periódicos, los manuales de uso, los prospectos médicos, los libros de autoayuda, los mítines, las conferencias, los telediarios, los sermones, los consejos...

La verdadera dificultad, no se haya en la capacidad para encontrar respuestas adecuadas a las preguntas, si no en todo lo contrario, en la formulación de preguntas que den sentido a las respuestas.

Preguntas y respuestas tienen vidas autónomas y diferenciadas pero sus caminos a veces se cruzan y de estas intersecciones azarosas, surge la metafísica.

La filosofía encuentra múltiples respuestas a muy pocas preguntas.

La religión, al contrario, da pocas y categóricas respuestas a todas las preguntas.

A esto se le llama fe.

Se puede llegar a afirmar que por cada pregunta existen centenares de respuestas y que a cada respuesta no le corresponde obligatoriamente una pregunta.

A menudo resulta difícil diferenciar una pregunta de una respuesta.

A menudo respuestas y preguntas intercambian sus papeles.

Las preguntas son, casi siempre, más breves que la respuesta. (Salvo en Latinoamérica, que sucede todo lo contrario) Erróneamente se tiende a pensar que la calidad del orador se mide por la longitud de sus respuestas.

Un consejo: No es necesario responder a todas las preguntas.

s well as a punctuation mark, a question mark is a question.

There are many doubts about questions.

What comes first, the questions or the answers?

Is a question necessary for every answer?

Is a reply obligatory? Is it necessary to ask?

What is the distance separating a question from an answer?

Is everything which comes before a question mark a question?

Can you repeat the question?

A few clues to clear up some questions: There are many more answers than questions.

Everything is full of answers: encyclopaedias, newspapers, user’s manuals, medical prospectuses, self-help books, meetings, conferences, the television news, sermons, pieces of advice …

The real difficulty is not in the ability to find adequate answers to the questions, rather in the complete opposite, the formulation of questions which give meaning to the answers.

Questions and answers have autonomous and separated lives but sometimes their paths cross and from these random junctions metaphysics emerges.

Philosophy finds a multiplicity of answers to very few questions.

Religion, on the other hand, gives very few but categorical answers to all

questions. That is called faith.

It is possible to affirm that there are hundreds of answers for each question but that each answer does not by necessity correspond to a question.

It is often difficult to distinguish between a question and an answer.

Answers and questions often switch roles.

Questions are, almost always, shorter than the answer. (Except in Latin America, where it is the complete opposite) There is an erroneous tendency to think that the quality of an orator is measured by the length of his or her answers.

One piece of advice: It is not necessary to answer all the questions.

¿Qué le preocupa a la niña dibujada en la cubierta del este álbum que con gesto taciturno arrastra “un bolso de laca rojo chillón de abuela” por un parque lleno de gente indiferente?

a protagonista estalla y grita: “¿Cómo es posible??!”. A pesar de las miradas perplejas de campistas y paseantes, de niños y enamorados, nadie le presta mayor atención. El mundo sigue girando, ¿a quién puede importarle el lamento ingenuo de una niña en un día primaveral? Sólo a un grupo de grotescos y extravagantes personajes que con reservas se acercan y preguntan: —“¿Qué diablos te sucede?”

—“¡Elvis ha muerto!”— responde la niña.

¿Cómo es posible??!

Tras el lógico e irónico malentendido, el lector confirma que no se refiere a Elvis, el rey del rock and roll, sino a un inerte “pequeño pájaro amarillo” que está en el fondo del bolso.

Schössow adopta el recurso gestual para crear la atmósfera y la tensión narrativa que la imagen y la historia precisan. Porque ¿Cómo es posible??! es un álbum que indaga en el tema de la muerte con la simplicidad de la figura y la expresión. Así como con la inocencia de la trama.

La literatura infantil ha evitado en muchas ocasiones, bien en nombre de lo políticamente correcto,

he protagonist explodes and shouts: “How is it Possible?”. Despite the puzzled looks of campers and passers-by, of children and lovers, nobody pays her the slightest attention. The world keeps on turning. Who could care about the simple cry of a little girl on a spring day? Only a group of grotesque, outlandish characters who come up timidly and ask: “What in heaven’s name is going on?”

“Elvis is dead!” replies the girl.

What is worrying the girl drawn on the cover of this book, who, with a glum expression, drags “a granny’s gaudy red plastic bag” through a park full of indifferent people?

After this logical and ironic misunderstanding, the reader is reassured that it is not Elvis, the King of Rock ‘N’ Roll who is being referred to, but a small yellow bird which is at the bottom of the bag.

Schössow resorts to gesture to create the atmosphere and narrative tension which the picture and the story necessitate. Because ¿Cómo es posible??!

(How is it Possible?) is a book which explores the theme of death with simplicity of form and expression and in a similar fashion with the innocence of the plot.

On many occasions, children’s literature has avoided tackling questions about death, either in

Este álbum, como los anteriores, no contesta a las preguntas ¿cómo es posible?, o ¿por qué?, pero da la respuesta que sólo la literatura puede dar, la del sentimiento y la emoción de las palabras y las imágenes.

Una mirada atenta a las ilustraciones nos muestra un trabajo de retoque fotográfico que funciona como tapiz para los dibujos de los protagonistas. La línea clara y el grueso trazo del dibujo son el contrapunto humorístico que el texto y la temática requieren.

the name of political correctness or to keep children from thorny issues. Hardly any examples face up to it but invariably they do so with extreme delicacy. We would like to remind you here of two examples published in recent years. On the one hand, the tender and discreet El ángel del abuelo (Grandfather’s Angel) by Jutta Bauer (in Bloc 0 there is a extensive interview with the author) which undertakes the task by way of a metaphor.

And on the other hand, Wolf Erlbruch’s El pato y la muerte, (The Duck and Death) which is a simple but profound, almost philosophical, dialogue between the two characters with death as the plot.

In any case a question is posed which can be rhetorical for adults but not for children who demand an answer to the mystery of death. Peter Schössow explores the question by means of the

death of a pet, finding catharsis in memories, in liturgy and rituals and finally in affection. He makes use of the humour of situations, inventing characters who come close to parody but who show the innocence, sincerity and frankness which the setting and the circumstances demand.

This book, like the aforementioned, doesn’t answer the questions “How is it Possible?” or “Why?”, but it gives the answer that only literature can supply, that of feelings and the emotion of words and pictures.

A thorough look at the illustrations reveals a work of photographic retouching which acts as a tapestry for the drawings of the protagonists. The clear lines and heavy strokes are the humorous counterpoint demanded by the text and the theme.

Por un lado, el tierno y discreto El ángel del abuelo de Jutta Bauer (en el número 0 de Bloc podemos encontrar una amplia entrevista con la autora) que lo acomete desde la metáfora. Y por otro, Wolf Erlbruch en El pato y la muerte, un sencillo pero profundo diálogo, casi filosófico, entre ambos personajes con la muerte como argumento.

ónde se coloca este libro, entre los cómics o entre los álbumes? Esta pregunta ya está superada aunque la respuesta siga siendo doble.

El mismo Pommaux habla de este espacio intermedio en el artículo “Un estilo entre el cómic y el álbum. Reflexiones acerca de mi experiencia”. ¿Y dónde se le colocaría a él? Parece que todos coinciden en situarlo en la línea clara. Sin embargo, si bien en esa corriente se encuentra una gran parte de su producción, las aventuras de John Chatterton han sido coloreadas por su esposa que le ha dado un importante giro estilístico, cargándolas de matices y texturas, aportando volumen, profundidad, sombras, donde todo es más orgánico aumentando el grado de iconicidad del dibujo.

Pero ¿dónde reside esa semejanza, que se le atribuye, con el cine? hould this book be filed with the comics or with the picture books? This question has already been transcended although it still has a double answer. Pommaux himself talks about this intermediate space in the article “A style between the comic and the illustrated book. Reflections on my experiences”. And where should we place him? It would seem that everybody agrees in placing him on the “clear line”. Nevertheless, although it’s true that most of his works are on this line, the adventures of John Chatterton have been coloured by his wife, which has given them an important stylistic twist, loading them with details and textures, adding volume, depth, shadows, where everything is more organic, increasing the degree of iconography in his drawing.

But where is that similarity, attributed to him, with the cinema? At the beginning of the book Pommaux’s camera does a tracking shot, turning to focus, from a high angle, on the door of the cat detective’s office; then we witness dialogues with shots and reverse shots, three magnificent panora-

Y ¿dónde están los elementos que hacen que las historias de John Chatterton sean plásticamente tan completas, literariamente tan recurrentes y visualmente tan modernas? Hay una destacada intertextualidad en lo artístico con obras de arte que recogen la figura del personaje del Lobo, desde el bronce “Lobo caminando” (basado en Giacometti) al ánfora egipcia con cabeza lupina y, de por medio, las referencias cubistas, impresionistas… hasta llegar al cuadro objeto del deseo, “Lobo azul sobre fondo blanco” que nos puede recordar a Keith Haring.

En cuanto a lo narrativo están presentes la novela negra y dos soportes referenciales que le van a dar una nota de humor: el cuento de Caperucita y el de Pulgarcito. Y su tremenda modernidad está en esos detalles propios de lo que en videojuegos se llaman “aventuras gráficas”, elementos que se destacan del fondo para ser utiliza-

dos por los personajes, o como hipervínculos que nos llevan a otra historia: “¿qué hace ese cepillo de dientes amarillo en la basura?”

Por último, vayamos a la clave más divertida del libro: en una aventura de secuestro, el detective ha de encontrar dónde está la víctima secuestrada. Y a este dónde se llega por dos caminos: por el rastro dejado por las prendas rojas y porque ¡el propio secuestrador confiesa su paradero!

Con ello, Yvan Pommaux firma un libro en el que nos dice que se ha divertido y nos lo transmite.

Por eso no es de extrañar que metiese a Chatterton en dos casos más.

And where are the elements which make the stories of John Chatterton so complete artistically, so literarily recurrent and visually so modern?

There’s an outstanding artistic intertextuality with works of art which the figure of the character Lobo collects, from the bronze “Wolf walking” (based on Giacometti) to an Egyptian amphora with a wolf’s head and in amongst all this references to cubists, impressionists... to end up with the picture which is the object of desire, “Blue Wolf on a White Background” which could bring Keith Haring to mind.

In terms of the narrative the dark novel is here as are two referential supports which give it a modern humoristic note: the story of Little RedRiding Hood and the story of Thumbelina. Its tremendous modernity lies in details of what they call “graphic adventures” in videogames, elements which stick out from the background to be used by the characters, or like hyperlinks which take

us to another story: “What is this yellow toothbrush doing in the rubbish?”

Finally, let’s go to the most amusing key to the book: in a kidnapping adventure, the detective must find where the victim is. This can be discovered by two means: by the trail of items of red clothing and because the kidnapper himself confesses her whereabouts!. With this, Yvan Pommaux puts his name to a book in which he tells us that he has enjoyed himself and which transmits this enjoyment to us. For this reason it is hardly surprising that he involves Chatterton in two more cases.

l ambiente de guerra ya se insinúa en la cubierta de El enemigo. Si detenemos aquí la mirada y observamos la imagen marcial del personaje que la inunda, pensaremos en ¿un general? de impecable uniforme decorado y condecorado, sonriente y próximo, amable, inofensivo… A pesar de todo, de su mano gotea un “interrogante de color rojo”, que perturba al mirarlo. ¿Acaso, se habrá manchado el general, con ese mismo rojo, el de El enemigo, tan próximo a su cabeza, sobre el silencioso espacio blanco de la cubierta?

Nada más abrir el libro, con tipografía bélica, en blanco sobre fondo negro y con vocación onomatopéyica, leemos en la primera doble página: ES LA GUERRA. Frase contundente, sin retórica, exenta de puntuación gramatical y, sin embargo, en su mensaje subyace un eterno interrogante: el porqué de la guerra.

Así comienza El Enemigo de Davide Cali y Serge Bloch. Un álbum que trata de la soledad de dos hombres, ¿soldados?, en un contexto de “guerra silenciosa”.

he atmosphere of war is already implied on the cover of El enemigo (The Enemy). If we hold our gaze here and look at the martial image of the character who swamps it, we will think “Is this a general?” smiling and close, friendly and inoffensive with his impeccable ornate uniform bedecked with medals. Despite everything, a red question mark drips from his hand, which disturbs us as we look at it. Perhaps the general has been stained with this same red, the red of El enemigo so close to his head, on the silent white space of the cover.

As soon as we have opened the book we read on the first double page “IT’S WAR”, written in a warlike font in white on a black background and with onomatopoeic intention. A forceful phrase, without rhetoric, with no punctuation and nevertheless its message is underlain by an eternal question: why are there wars?

This is how El enemigo (The Enemy) by Davide Cali and Serge Bloch begins: a book which deals with the solitude of two men (soldiers?) in the context of a “silent war”.

Algo infrecuente sucede a lo largo de las trece primeras páginas (incluidas guardas). Un anticipo argumental, a modo de introducción, fundamentalmente gráfica, nos sitúa en el escenario de hechos y claves, sin desvelar ningún aspecto de lo que podríamos llamar el núcleo de la historia. Así, la representación de este escenario —podría ser un desierto, como se ha dicho— se va enriqueciendo de forma progresiva con elementos y acciones que desembocan en una “batalla” entre dos hombres solitarios ¿soldados?

Con la misma tipografía utilizada en la cubierta, los textos de estas páginas se limitan a confirmar el sentido narrativo de las imágenes y ambos, texto e imagen, redundan en una misma conclusión final: los contendientes son ENEMIGOS. El hecho de que la palabra ENEMIGOS, esté impresa en rojo, no es casual. Además de enfatizar su significado, aproxima visualmente dos espacios, la cubierta y la portada, distanciadas inusualmente, por lo que hemos denominado introducción. Es una de las singularidades de este álbum, el encontrarnos dicha página

Something rare happens throughout the first thirteen pages (including flyleaves). A foretaste of the plot, by way of introduction, fundamentally graphical, places us in the scene of the action and gives us the keys without revealing any aspects of what we might call the nucleus of the story. In this way the representation of the scene – it could be a desert, as has been said – progressively becomes richer with elements and actions which lead up to a “battle” between two lonely men (soldiers?).

Using the same typography as the cover, the text in these pages limits itself to confirming the narrative meaning of the illustrations and both, text and illustration, come to the same conclusion: the two protagonists are ENEMIES. It is not by chance that the word ENEMIES is printed in red.

In addition to emphasising its significance, it brings together two spaces, the cover and the title page, which are unusually far apart, separated by what we have called the introduction. One of the peculiarities of this book is finding that the title page additionally acts as a divider between two different sections of the same story.

La portada, roja “por herencia”, nos muestra en su parte inferior, con negro rotundo, la frase EL ENEMIGO ensanchada espacialmente; sobre ella un tímido escenario teatral con un tímido soldado, cansado, aburrido, desubicado… ¿será éste el “enemigo”?, ¿o tal vez, detrás de la palabra ENEMIGO se oculta el otro “enemigo”?.

“El enemigo está ahí, pero nunca se le ve”. Con esta afirmación arranca el núcleo de la historia, la del día a día en el agujero, en los dos agujeros, hasta conducirnos a un final abierto. Narrada en primera persona, ¿por quién?, ¿desde qué agujero?, ¿por el enemigo con un manual de guerra, a quién el “general” ha hecho soldado? o ¿por el hombre con familia que le espera, y mira las estrellas…?

Or perhaps, the other “enemy” is hidden behind the word ENEMY? “The enemy is there, but he can never be seen”.

With this affirmation the core of the book begins, the day by day in the foxhole, in the two foxholes, until it brings us to an open-ended finale. It is narrated in the first person - by whom? from which foxhole? by the enemy with a war manual who the “general” has converted into a soldier? or by the family man who waits for him and gazes at the stars…?

l final del verano (El verano de Garman en el original), que ganó el Bologna Ragazzi Award de 2007, es el canto de los grillos y la llegada de tres tías abuelas, que Antonio Faeti identificó como transposición de las hadas de los cuentos de toda la vida. Garman se encuentra delante de un ritual de pasaje, uno de los pocos que quedan hoy en día (quizá sea la pérdida de los rituales uno de los elementos más sensibles a la hora de evaluar las consecuencias del alejamiento de nuestra cultura del aspecto trascendente): el principio de la escuela. ¿Se siente Garman listo? Por mucho que lo haya intentado aún no ha perdido ni un diente, mala señal, porque a su falta de preparación física y anímica corresponde el imparable transcurrir del tiempo.

Sus dudas frente a un “cuándo” más que claro y un “qué” indefinido encuentran su equivalente en las tías abuelas enfrentadas a un “cuándo”, cierto en su llegada, aunque no específico en el instante. ¿Tienen miedo las tías abuelas? l final del verano (Garmann’s Summer), which won the Bologna Ragazzi Award in 2007, is the song of the crickets and the arrival of three greataunts, who Antonio Faeti identified as the transposition of the fairies in the fairy tales with which we have grown up. Garmann finds himself facing a rite of passage, one of the few which remain nowadays (perhaps the loss of ritual is one of the most sensitive elements when evaluating the consequences of the distancing of our culture from transcendent aspects): his first day at school.

Does Garmann feel prepared? However much he has tried he hasn’t lost a tooth yet, a bad sign, because the unstoppable passing of time coincides with his lack of physical and spiritual preparation. His doubts facing a blatantly obvious “when” and an indefinite “why” find their parallel in the three great-aunts with their unavoidable “when” but their unspecified “exactly when”. Are the great-aunts afraid? Of course they are. Well, Aunt Augusta isn’t because she has forgotten everything, but Aunt Ruth is afraid of the winter – however incredible this may seem to Garmann – and Aunt Borghild is afraid of death alt-

que esto le parezca a Garman— y tía Borghild le tiene miedo a la muerte, aunque sea un miedo con fecha de caducidad. Nunca sabes lo que está por venir. Las investigaciones de Garman lo llevan más allá: a descubrir que algunos miedos (como el miedo del padre músico antes de cada concierto) no se pierden nunca, ni por la fuerza de la costumbre.

La constelación afectiva de Garman, el espacio del jardín en el que se desarrolla su verano, lleva al niño a enfrentarse al futuro y a los momentos de cambio con esa mezcla de miedo y expectación que nos hace sentir vivos. El texto avanza con el tono de una elegía, reforzado por la expresividad del aparato visual.

Se ubica Stian Hole en una tradición de collage y surrealismo metafísico: si por un lado, como comenta el propio Faeti, no puede uno dejar de pensar en las obras de Max Ernst, por el otro es curiosa la cercanía con el espíritu de De Chirico. Esos cuadros en los que el tiempo se cristaliza en la luz del atardecer (Nostalgia del infinito), se suspende (Piazza d’Italia) y lo más disparatado coexiste, creando una nueva unidad (Le muse inquietanti). The affective domain of Garmann, the garden environment in which his summer takes place, leads the child to face up to the future and the transitional moments with that mixture of fear and anticipation which makes us feel alive. The text progresses in the tone of an elegy, reinforced by the expressiveness of the visual stimuli. Stian Hole places himself in the tradition of collage and metaphysical surrealism: if one the one hand, as Faeti himself commented, one cannot help but think of the works of Max Ernst, on the other, the proximity in spirit to De Chirico is curious. Those pictures in which time crystalizes in the light of the setting sun (Nostalgia for the Infinite), where it is suspended (Piazza d’Italia) and the most absurd things coexist creating a new unity (Le muse inquietanti). The author admits that he was trying to transmit the light of the beginning of Autumn (and if

Si alguna vez nos preguntan ¿de quién es el verano? “De Garman”, repetiremos. Y lo mejor del caso, obvia decirlo, es que tendremos razón.

But there is something else: the images set themselves up as symbolic concentrations of Garmann’s perceptive world. In this Garmann’s summer is synthesised, that is, it is his (Garmann’s of course), a fact which gives him concordance with the intention of the book and his discovery of time, of that which awaits him and which, on the other hand, the great-aunts leave behind when “coming from remote epochs in a boat” they turn up at his father’s house. If we are asked some time “Whose is the summer?” We will reply, “It’s Garmann’s.” And the best thing about it, needless to say, is that we will be right.

Estaba oscuro y sospechosamente tranquilo

staba oscuro y sospechosamente tranquilo es uno de los dos libros de Einar Turkowski que conocemos en España. Está realizado con ilustraciones para un texto extenso y minucioso, a lápiz, en blanco y negro, con profundos contrastes de tonalidad.

Muchos dicen que recuerdan a los aguafuertes en su acabado.

Cuenta la historia de un pescador-inventor que llega con su barco a las playas de una ciudad. De su insólita dedicación nadie sabe, aún así los habitantes deciden sembrar la duda y la sospecha, por si acaso, y limitar cualquier posibilidad de convivencia con él.

Turkowski trabaja sobre ejes dobles tanto formales como semánticos. La composición alterna imágenes abiertas distribuidas en la doble página con imágenes cerradas y limitadas por un marco. La narración encuentra su sentido en la paradoja, es la idea de que algo esté tranquilo y sea sospechoso a un tiempo. Durante gran parte del relato se mantiene oculto al protagonista. Dos voces, del narrador y de los lugareños, median en la información recibida por el lector. No tenemos la voz directa del protagonista

staba oscuro y sospechosamente tranquilo (It was Dark and Eerily Quiet) is one of the two books

by Einar Turkowski that we know in Spain. It is produced with illustrations in pencil in black and white with pronounced contrasts of tonality for an extensive and meticulous text. Many say that their finish reminds them of etchings.

It tells the story of a fisherman-inventor who comes in his boat to the beaches of a city. Nobody knows of his unusual profession, despite which the locals decide to sow doubt and suspicion and limit any possibility of co-existence with him.

Turkowski works on double axes both formal and semantic. The composition alternates open images distributed on the double-page spread with closed images defined by a frame. The narrative finds its meaning in paradox: the idea that something can be peaceful and suspicious at the same time. For a large part of the book the protagonist remains hidden. Two voices, that of the narrator and that of the locals intervene in the information received by the reader.

ni una imagen donde le veamos de frente, ni sepamos de dónde viene. Todo su mundo es “visto desde fuera”, reproducido en una maqueta, como fruto del espionaje y de la sospecha, y nunca de la confianza o la amistad.

La historia muestra la impenetrabilidad de una comunidad competitiva y mecánica frente a un individuo que trata de integrarse en ella mediante una vía legítima, creativa y fabulosa de supervivencia. La xenofobia y el exilio han sido tratados en otros libros destinados a niños y jóvenes: La isla de Greder, Tres monstruos de McKee, Bestiarara de Arnal Ballester o El lugar más maravilloso del mundo de Jens Rasmuss son ejemplos importantes. Turkowski desarrolla estos temas con humor en la caracterización de personajes y situaciones y con aparente seriedad tanto en la técnica de ilustración como en el valor científico del ingenio: “de cómo hacer que lluevan peces”.

Esta serie de artilugios recuerdan a las metáforas mecánicas de autores como Sean Mackaoui; a los bocetos de los naturalistas rescatados por un

autor como Javier Sáez Castán; a Francis Meléndez en el meticuloso uso del dibujo en blanco y negro, el gusto documental por los prototipos e inventos, y la concepción de la obra total: formato, tipografía, composición, texto e ilustración.

No sabemos si este álbum ha pasado por el cómic ni si son seguros sus anclajes con el mundo infantil, no obstante la actividad del “pescador de nubes” es el resultado de un proceso científico, poético y maravilloso. Tiene la lógica de la ciencia, la conquista humanística del Renacimiento y la explicación del sueño. No se aleja demasiado del universo infantil. Ofrece una imagen de mundo al revés: si el pescador atrapa bancos de peces en la nubes, el mar será el cielo, entonces, ¿dónde podremos encontrar su secreto?

Quizás en Darwix, poeta del exilio, al que gusta tener cerca: “...Y desapareció en la Quinta Avenida, o en el umbral del Polo Norte. No recuerdo de sus ojos sino ciudades que iban y venían. Se perdió... se perdió.”

neither do we know where he comes from. All of his world is “seen from outside”, reproduced in a scale model as the result of espionage and suspicion, and never as a result of trust or friendship.

The story shows the impenetrability of a competitive and mechanical community to an individual who tries to integrate himself with it by means of a legitimate, creative and fabulous survival route.

Xenophobia and exile have been tackled in other books for children and youngsters: La isla (The Island) by Greder, Tres monstruos (Three Monsters) by McKee, Bestiarara (Rare Bestiary) by Arnal Ballester and El lugar más maravilloso del mundo (The Most Wonderful Place in the World) by Jens Rasmuss are important examples. Turkowski develops these themes with humour in the portrayal of the characters and situations and with apparent seriousness as much in the illustration techniques as in the scientific value of ingenuousness: “of how to make it rain fish”.

This series of artifices remind us of the mechanical metaphors of authors such as Sean Mackaoui; of the sketches of the naturalists recovered by an author such as Javier Sáez Castán; of Francis Meléndez in

the meticulous use of black and white drawings, the documentary taste for prototypes and inventions and the conception of the work as a whole: its format, typography, composition, text and illustration. We don’t know if this work has passed through a stage as a comic nor if it is anchored securely in the world of childhood, but nevertheless the activity of the “cloud fisherman” is the result of a marvellous process both scientific and poetic. It has the logic of science, the human conquest of the Renaissance and the explanation of dreams. It never goes far from the world of infancy. It offers an image of a world upside down: if the fisherman catches shoals of fish in the clouds, the sea must be the sky and then where can we find his secret?

Perhaps in Mahmud Darwix, the poet of exile, who it is pleasant to have close: “… And he disappeared on Fifth Avenue, or on the threshold of the North Pole. I don’t remember his eyes but I remember cities which came and went.

He got lost… he got lost.”

Historia de la resurrección del papagayo

os álbumes infantiles además de preguntar, también pueden dar respuestas a cuestiones específicas e importantes que el lector ignora y que pueden ser motivo de noches sin dormir o de pensamientos recurrentes: ¿dónde viven los monstruos? ¿cómo se vuelve uno de color elefante? ¿por qué lloran los cocodrilos? Estos libros se convierten entonces en esenciales, ya que explican cómo funciona el mundo verdadero, el que preocupa al lector por encima de otras menudencias. Es el caso de este álbum en el que se da respuesta a una pregunta importante: ¿por qué el papagayo tiene plumas multicolores y otros pájaros no? Eduardo Galeano inspirándose en un relato antiguo del nordeste de Brasil pone en pie una narración encadenada donde la casualidad y la causalidad juegan un papel decisivo. El papagayo se cayó en una olla y se murió y a partir de ahí, una sucesión de azares, presididos por la pena y la pérdida se van ensartando hasta culminar en una piedad redentora que hace, finalmente, que el que tiene el poder para dar vida y qui-

llustrated children’s books, as well as asking, can also give answers to specific important questions which the reader is not aware of and which can be the cause of sleepless nights or recurrent thoughts: Where do monsters live? How can you turn the colour of an elephant? Why do crocodiles cry? These books then become essential because they explain how the real world works which is what concerns the reader much more than other trivialities. It’s the case with this book in which a reply is given to the important question of why the parrot has multi-coloured feathers and other birds don’t? Eduardo Galeano, inspired by an old tale from the north-east of Brazil sets up a narrative chain where chance and causality play a decisive role. The parrot falls into a pot and dies and from there a succession of chance events dominated by sadness and loss are strung together to end up in redeeming mercy which finally makes the one who has the power of giving life or taking it away, a potter magician, take pity on the parrot and resurrect it, but with the mark of all those who mourned him on his feathers.

Y el ilustrador ¿cómo responde a la pregunta?

El ilustrador es un escultor y esculpe sobre madera la esencia de la historia. Nada resulta accesorio en esta propuesta plástica que sigue, sin distancia, las secuencias yuxtapuestas de los acontecimientos. Sin escenarios, con los límites de las figuras rotundas y tan físicas que parecen confirmar la verdad de esta explicación sobre la que no se albergan dudas. Todo es cierto.

Los colores puros, la veta visible de la madera, la contundencia del volumen, iluminan lo que era

opaco e incomprensible. ¿Por qué el papagayo tiene plumas de tantos colores? Pues porque se cayó en una olla que humeaba y... Aquí está el relato mítico que lo explica, sin dudas, con la verdad de la madera y de la palabra poética, la que nunca miente, la que viene de lejos y conmueve.

El aire mítico del relato y la sencillez primitiva del material se unen en este caso en un relato que explica los orígenes de las cosas. El lector sabe que se trata de un tipo de respuesta que se relaciona no con la apariencia, una explicación científica al uso, sino con la esencia, con lo que solo el arte puede aprehender y evidenciar.

And how does the illustrator respond to the question? He is a sculptor and he sculpts the essence of the story in wood. Nothing is a mere accessory in this artistic proposal which closely follows the juxtaposed sequence of events. Without settings, the edges of the rounded and so physical figures seem to confirm the truth of this explanation leaving no room for doubt. Everything is true. The pure colours, the visible grain of the wood, the forcefulness of volume, light up what was opaque and incomprehensible. Why does the parrot have such multi-coloured plumage? Well, it’s

ocas veces un libro para niños coloca al lector, de cualquier edad, en los bordes de una inquietud existencial. ¿Para qué venimos al mundo? es la pregunta que sirve como detonante y como columna vertebral de las escenas que se alternan en este libro álbum, revestido de una enorme sencillez estética, casi minimalista.

Sin duda alguna, el ser humano siempre ha tratado de responder desde diferentes perspectivas a experiencias vitales —la muerte, la vida, el desapego, la soledad— que dinamizan búsquedas de respuestas o al menos de caminos por dónde divagar hacia la comprensión de zonas boscosas de la existencia.

Para quienes hemos transitado por experiencias de esta índole o para quienes hemos convivido con personas discapacitadas, este libro nos permite una relectura de la vida y alimenta una parte de esa permanente reflexión sobre el sentido de algunas situaciones que nos perturban o conmueven.

Pero también para sacudirnos del letargo de la cotidianidad.

t is very rare for a children’s book to place the reader, of whatever age, on the edges of existential doubts. Why did we come into the world? is the question that serves as a trigger and as the backbone to the scenes which alternate in this picture book, clothed in an extremely simple, almost minimalist aesthetic.

Undoubtedly human beings have always tried to respond from different perspectives to life experiences – death, life, alienation, loneliness – which propel searches for answers or at least for ways to drift towards the understanding of the wooded areas of existence.

For those of us who have gone through experiences of this nature or for those of us who have lived with disabled people, this book allows us to read life again and feeds a part of this permanent reflection upon the meaning of some situations which disturb or move us, but also shakes us from the lethargy of the everyday.

Twenty-one scenes articulate a series of replies about this big question and offer us

Veintiuna escenas articulan una serie de respuestas alrededor de esa gran pregunta, y nos ofrecen perspectivas que se complementan y se cruzan, como los diámetros de una circunferencia. Cada personaje plantea una solución, desde su horizonte y sus expectativas: “Estás aquí para obedecer”, comenta el soldado; “Estás aquí para estar aquí”, dice la piedra; “Para saber confiar”, dice el ciego...

Al final, esta obra abierta deja trazadas innumerables rutas que confrontan al lector con su propia solución, pero en una sana inestabilidad porque nunca habrá una única y definitiva respuesta.

Desde el punto de vista narratológico, una fiesta de cumpleaños sirve como excusa para expandir el mundo ficcional, en una arquitectura circular, pues el recorrido comienza en un espacio íntimo para terminar en otro similar. Desde la portada, se sugiere a un personaje que se mantiene en equilibrio al borde del planeta, desde el cual nos invita a tomar distancia como espectadores de ese gran teatro que se desarrolla en el interior del

libro. Entre las referencias intertextuales, se hace alusión a otro libro de Erlbruch, El pato y la muerte, ya que dos de los personajes que dinamizan esta búsqueda son la cadavérica figura que representa el final de la vida y el pato anodino cuya respuesta resulta aplastante: “No tengo ni la menor idea”.

Valorar el concepto editorial nos conduce a plantearnos el ritmo de las dobles páginas y la selección de esta muestra de imágenes, que se tejen en una sucesión donde intervienen personas vinculadas y ajenas al mundo del protagonista, animales y seres inanimados. Aunque no resulta fácil discernir la armazón que justifica el curso y la combinatoria de las escenas, el resultado final no genera quiebros en el conjunto perfectamente armonizado en la tensión diagonal y el peso de los textos e ilustraciones sobre las páginas.

Propuesta excepcional, que seguramente alargará la vida de este libro entre tantos materiales efímeros e insustanciales que se publican en el mercado.

Each character creates a solution based on his horizons and his expectations. “You are here to obey”, comments the soldier; “You are here to be here,” says the stone; “To know how to trust,” says the blind man…

Finally, this open-ended work leaves innumerable trails marked out which confront the reader with his own solution but in a sane instability because there will never be a single, definitive solution.

From the narrative point of view, a birthday party serves as an excuse to expand the fictional world, in a circular structure because the journey begins in one intimate space and finishes in another similar one. The cover suggests a character who keeps his balance on the edge of the planet, from where we are invited to distance ourselves as spectators of the great theatre which develops inside the book. Amongst the intertextual references, allusion is made to another of Erlbruch’s book, El pato y la muerte,

(The Duck and Death) as two of the characters who start up this search are the cadaverous figure who represents the end of life and the anodyne duck whose answer turns out to be overwhelming: “I haven’t the faintest idea.”

Evaluating the editorial concept leads us to raise the matter of the rhythm of the double pages and the choice of this selection of images which are woven in a sequence in which people are linked to the world of the protagonist and, outside his world, animals and inanimate beings.

Although it isn’t easy to discern the framework which justifies the direction or the combination of the pictures, the final result doesn’t generate cracks in the perfectly harmonious whole in diagonal tension and the relative weight of the text and illustrations on the pages.

This is an exceptional offering, which will surely extend the shelf-life of this book in amongst so many ephemeral and insubstantial items published in the market.

na niña junto a su perro no puede dormir en una noche tormentosa. Miles de preguntas se agolpan en su cabeza: ¿Dónde finaliza el infinito? ¿De dónde venimos? ¿Quién soy yo? ¿Realmente, toda mi vida está ya determinada desde el principio? ¿Qué es, en realidad, el destino? Y el azar, ¿quién lo determina? ¿Sabré, cuando llegue el momento, que tengo que morir? ¿Dónde va el alma cuando alguien muere?...

Interrogarse acerca de la realidad, inclusive acerca de la vida y la muerte, los miedos, los deseos.

La niña de este libro contempla el mundo y se contempla a sí misma buscando respuestas, sin embargo las respuestas no están dadas, porque lo importante es la búsqueda; para ello se recurre a la imagen poética, la metáfora, tanto en el texto como en la ilustración.

Noche de tormenta (Storm Night) has a girl as the main character; but it is her questions, the incessant questions that this girl asks herself, and thus the reader, which are the book’s protagonists.

ne stormy night a girl and her dog cannot sleep. Thousands of questions crowd together in her head: Where does infinity end? Where do we come from? Who am I? Is my whole life determined from the beginning? What is destiny really? And chance – who decides on that? When the moment comes will I know that I have to die? Where does the soul go when someone dies?

To ask herself about reality, even about life and death, fears, desires. The girl in this book looks at the world and inside herself for answers. Nevertheless, the answers are not given because the important thing is the search; for that reason both the text and the illustrations resort to the poetic image, the metaphor.

“When I am sad, I feel as though I were full of water. And the water rises and rises up to the roots of my hair.”

En ocasiones los interrogantes y sus imágenes se interrumpen y la ilustración muestra el mundo exterior: la noche de tormenta más allá de la ventana, la niña acurrucándose junto a su perro, escondiéndose bajo las sábanas. Pero también, por momentos, el mundo exterior y el mundo interior de la niña se fusionan y entonces los miedos invaden “la realidad”, formas monstruosas abarcan ambas páginas dejando apenas espacio para las palabras.

El niño es el preguntón por excelencia. Para el niño el mundo, la vida, es un gran misterio que hay que resolver, una adivinanza absoluta. Incesantes preguntas que calan hondo en el ser de las cosas, que imposibilitan una respuesta, a menos que se recurra a la mentira o a la solución dictada por la costumbre.

En este sentido Noche de tormenta es un libro para niños, y claro está, también para quienes han dejado de serlo, pero sin abandonar la posibilidad de interrogar la realidad, como un acto de creación y de conocimiento.

Sometimes it is humour, the literal interpretation of the phrase, becoming corporeal by the abstraction of the question through the image, and the image becomes surreal like the skeleton ready to choose a body from the placard, or the men sprouting from the ground like vegetables.

Why are things the way they are? Who am I and what am I like? But also what if things were different?

This “and if” is capable of looking at the world with fresh eyes and invites us to imagine other possibilities for reality.

“Imagine if…” the girl appeals to the reader.

“Imagine if we were to sprout from the ground like vegetables … or if we came off an assembly line… or if we were made of recycled material.

Imagine if we could change our body…”

There are no limits to this question-asking game. The “and if” opens up all the possibilities including the most extreme ones: “And if there is nothing after death, then what?”

“And if we live forever?”

Sometimes the questions and their images are interrupted and the illustration shows us the outside world: the stormy night beyond the window, the girl huddling up next to her dog, hiding herself beneath the sheets. But also, at times, the exterior world and the girl’s interior world fuse and then fears invade “reality”, monstrous forms take up both pages leaving hardly any room for the words.

A child is a question-maker par excellence.

For a child the world and life are great mysteries to be resolved, the absolute riddle.

Incessant questions which penetrate deep into the very being of things, which make an answer impossible unless we resort to lies or the answer dictated by habit.

In this sense Noche de tormenta [Stormy Night] is a children’s book, and of course, it is also a book for those who have ceased to be children, but who have not abandoned the possibility of questioning reality as an act of creation and learning.

“Imagína que brotáramos del suelo como las legumbres... o viniéramos de la cadena de producción... o estuviéramos hechos de material reciclado. Imagína que pudiéramos cambiar nuestro cuerpo...”

No hay límites en este juego de hacer preguntas.

ué es la felicidad?”. En la tradición del budismo zen se cuentan historias que recogen el diálogo entre un maestro y un discípulo cuando éste inquiere por el QUÉ de las cosas. De acuerdo con una filosofía vital de la sencillez y de la evidencia, el maestro ridiculiza las pretensiones metafísicas del alumno mediante respuestas evasivas, con frecuencia circulares y repetitivas, y en apariencia ajenas a la cuestión planteada. Jutta Bauer, según sus propias declaraciones, admite una escritura/lectura zen de su Selma, a la que ha dotado además de una estructura metaficcional de larga vigencia en Occidente: la fábula de animales con contenido moral.

Bien, pero ¿qué es la felicidad? Eso es lo que le plantea un zorro algo borrachín con inquietudes existenciales a un sabio, el Gran Carnero: la respuesta es una parábola que trata de una oveja llamada Selma. El tono irónico y la retranca zen ya se encuentran en el mismo formato del álbum ilustrado: para acoger a una de las preguntas de mayor alcance, he aquí un librillo de muy reducidas dimensiones, con veintisiete sencillas y divertidas viñetas que son

hat is happiness?” In the Zen Buddhist tradition they tell stories which collect the dialogues between a master and a disciple when the latter asks about the WHY of things. In accordance with a simple philosophy of life and with the evidence, the master makes fun of the metaphysical pretensions of the pupil by means of evasive replies, often circular and repetitive and often apparently irrelevant to the question posed.

Jutta Bauer, according to her own words, allows a Zen writing/reading of her work Selma, on which she has bestowed a metafictional structure with a long history in the West: the animal fable with a moral lesson.

Yes, well, so what is happiness? That is what a somewhat drunken fox with existential uneasiness asks a wise man, the Great Goat: the reply is a parable about a sheep called Selma. The ironic tone and Zen caution are already found in the format of the illustrated book itself: in order to take in one of the most important questions of all, we have here a tiny book with twenty-seven simple and enjoyable vignettes which are variations on recurring themes:

Entonces, ¿qué es la felicidad? Tal cuestión, que tan preocupado le trae al zorrillo, no parece tener cabida en la apacible vida de Selma: ella, simplemente, se dedica a pastar su hierba todas las mañanas, a charlar con sus corderos, a hacer un poco de ejercicio, a cultivar la amistad con la señora Buitráguez y a dormir a pierna suelta. Por si acaso el zorrillo preguntaba por algo relacionado con nuestros valores éticos, con nuestras aspiraciones y frustraciones, con la perentoria necesidad de dotar a nuestra vida de un sentido que nos satisfaga, aparece un anónimo reportero que, micrófono en mano, pregunta a Selma qué haría si le tocara la lotería o si dispusiera de más tiempo. Selma, con su inequívoca obviedad ovina, responde que se dedicaría a... comer su hierba cada mañana, a charlar con sus corderos, a cultivar la amistad y a dormir a pierna suelta. Y eso es el QUÉ de todas las cosas. Nada más.

¿Qué es la felicidad? ¿Será ésta una pregunta demasiado grande para los más pequeños? ¿No erraremos los adultos en el exceso de conceptualización, en las impertinentes mayúsculas, tan serias, tan infelices? Quizá sea el lector todavía analfabeto el que señale certeramente los detalles más sustanciosos de la ilustración que podrían pasar inadvertidos, acotaciones minúsculas en forma de guiños donde impera el humor, ingrediente elemental del libro.

Qué casualidad: fue Alberto Caeiro, el guardador de rebaños, otro maestro zen, aquel que decía que “bastante metafísica hay en no pensar en nada”, quien escribió estos versos definitivos: “El único sentido íntimo de las cosas / es el de no tener sentido íntimo alguno”.

Selma asentiría complacida antes de irse a dormir su profundo y plácido sueño final.

Then what is happiness? Such a question, which worried the little fox so much, doesn’t seem to have had a place in the life of Selma: she simply dedicates herself to grazing the grass in the morning, to chatting to her lambs, to doing a little exercise, to befriending Mrs. Buitráguez and to sleeping like a log. Just in case the little fox was asking something related to our ethical values, about our aspirations and frustrations, with the peremtory necessity to bestow a satisfying meaning on our lives, an anonymous reporter appears who, microphone in hand, asks Selma what she would do if she won the lottery or if she had more time. Selma, with her unmistakeable ovine predictablity, replies that she would dedicate herself to… grazing every morning, talking to her lambs, making friends and sleeping like a log. And that is the WHY of everything.

Nothing more.

What is happiness? Will this be too big a question for the littlest ones? Are we adults not mistaken in the excess of conceptualisation, in the impertinent

capital letters, so serious and so unhappy? Perhaps it may be the yet illiterate reader who points out correctly the most substantive details of the illustration which could pass unnoticed, small marginal notes in the form of winks where humour, a basic ingredient of the book rules.

What a coincidence: it was Alberto Caeiro, el guardador de rebaños, the Shepherd, another master of Zen, who said that “there is enough metaphysics in not thinking about anything”, who wrote these definitive lines: “The only intimate meaning of things / Is that of not having any intimate meaning”.

Selma would nod her head complacently before going off to sleep her deep and untroubled sleep.

No sabemos si la literatura dirigida a los niños tiene la obligación de ser preguntona, impertinente, retadora. ¿La tiene?

Corren tiempos de una cierta experimentación en el territorio del álbum que no deja de ser complaciente y bienintencionada, que ofrece respuestas ¿inútiles? sin que nadie haya hecho preguntas, que tranquiliza el ánimo de sus lectores, y sobre todo de los llamados mediadores. Todo dentro de los márgenes.

We don’t know if literature aimed at children has the duty to be questioning, impertinent and challenging.

Does it?

At the present time there is a certain experimentation in the field of picture books which have not stopped being complacent and well-meant, offering useless(?) answers even though no-one has asked any questions, which calms the spirit of the readers and above all of the so-called mediators.

Everything according to convention.

e lo que no cabe duda es de que la literatura infantil, como la de los mayores, no debería dejar de ser inquietante y algo perturbadora. Lo contrario, da como resultado libros que halagan y se olvidan.

Hemos traído hasta la sección de reseñas algunos álbumes que ejemplifican a través de su texto y de sus imágenes la gran pregunta-invitación lanzada al lector: ¿Sabes de lo que te hablo? ¿Quieres entrar en mi juego? No es el juego de la realidad, ni de los espejos, es “otra cosa” que necesita, para ponerse en marcha, de un interlocutor, de alguien, al otro lado, que quiera ser preguntado y que no busque, desde luego, una única respuesta.

Cada uno de los álbumes elegidos podría plantear una pregunta implícita y otras cien.

Pero hemos elegido una cuestión por álbum y el juego parece funcionar. Cada ejemplo nos sirve para vislumbrar cómo los libros interesantes preguntan a sus lectores desde el juego, la paradoja, el humor, el realismo, la hipérbole o la metáfora.

here is no doubt that children’s literature, just like adult literature, should not stop being disturbing and somewhat subversive. If it does the result is books which give pleasure and are soon forgotten.

In our review section we have included some picture books which exemplify through their text and images the great question-invitation thrown at the reader: Do you know what I’m talking to you about? Do you want to join in my game? It is not the game of reality, nor the game of mirrors, it is “something else” which requires an interlocutor, somebody from the other side who wants to be asked and who is not looking for one definitive answer to set the game in motion.

Each one of the chosen picture books could pose one implicit question and a hundred more.

But we have selected one question per book and the game seems to work. Each example helps us to get some idea how interesting books pose the reader questions through games, paradox, humour, realism, hyperbole or metaphor.

Detective Chatterton por cualquiera de las cuestiones que el género negro plantea: ¿Quién? ¿Cómo? ¿Cuándo? aunque nos quedamos con el ¿Dónde se oculta la víctima?

El enemigo nos lleva hasta el territorio de los otros: ¿Quién es el enemigo?

Estaba oscuro y sospechosamente tranquilo nos hace cuestionarnos: ¿Cuál es la razón para sospechar?

La gran pregunta plantea los fines de las cosas: ¿Para qué?

Historia de la resurrección del papagayo ¿Por qué el mundo es de una determinada manera?

Selma brings us to ask ourselves core questions: What is happiness? And Noche de tormenta (Storm Night) bombards us with questions about existence: And what if…?

El final del verano (Garmann’s Summer) asks “When does one grow up? And ¿Como es posible??! (How is it Possible?) hits us with its interjection/question with the desolation of the death of those we love. How? Detective Chatterton (Detective Chatterton) for any of the questions usually posed by thrillers: Who? How? When? Although we have stuck with the Where is the body hidden?

El enemigo (The Enemy) takes us to the territory of others: Who is the enemy?

Estaba oscuro y sospechosamente tranquilo (It was Dark and Suspiciously Quiet) makes us question ourselves: Why are we suspicious?

La gran pregunta (The Big Question) asks us for the purpose of things: Why? Historia de la resurrección del papagayo (History of the Resurrection of a Parrot) asks: Why is the world like it is?

Here are literature and art, fulfilling their role: asking.
