Words from the Director Dear readers: New Year new goals and new projects. We started this 2013 full of optimism, goals and new projects. Our beloved DESTINOS magazine grows, and now is projected towards new content, themes, and international distribution. We will be starting this year with our operation in Panama, with the opening of offices, which will allow us a better understanding about what encloses and projected this important country and its values in tourist terms.

Estimados lectores: Año nuevo, nuevas metas y nuevos objetivos. Iniciamos este 2013 llenos de optimismo, metas y nuevos proyectos. Nuestra querida Revista DESTINOS crece, y ahora se proyecta hacia nuevos contenidos, temas y distribución Internacional. Estaremos iniciando este año con nuestra operación en Panamá, con la apertura de oficinas, las cuales nos permitirán una mejor comprensión sobre lo que encierra y proyecta este importante País y sus valores en términos turísticos. Este año también continuamos con el lanzamiento de nuestro portal www.travelagentraining.com como base y soporte importante para nuestra plataforma de capacitación y educación para agentes de viajes y profesionales en turismo, sobre los diferentes países y productos en América Latina. Esta herramienta llamada Travel Agent Training, agrupa inicialmente a los programas llamados: • AMIGO DE COSTA RICA • AMIGO DE PANAMÁ • AMIGO DEL MUNDO MAYA Ya trabajamos en el desarrollo de Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador y países de América del Sur, como lo son Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina, Perú entre otros. Cada uno de estos programas es diseñado a la medida por conocedores y especialistas de cada uno de los países. En este último producto, el cual trata sobre el fascinante MUNDO MAYA, contamos con el apoyo de la ORGANIZACIÓN MUNDO MAYA. La cual tiene su sede en EL Salvador; uniendo en la ruta MAYA a los siguientes países: Salvador, Honduras, Belice, Guatemala y México. Así que esperamos con el desarrollo de Travel Agent Training y Revista DESTINOS seguir aportando ideas y proyectos que den fortaleza y soporte en los diferentes mercados emisores de pasajeros hacia Latino América. Convirtiéndonos en un colaborador vital para el crecimiento de cada uno de nuestros socios a los cuales brindamos todo nuestro apoyo.

ensar en recorrer algún sitio del mundo es sinónimo de hacerlo vía terrestre, ya sea en vehículo, caminando o bien en algún otro medio de transporte, pero sin despegar los pies de la tierra. Pero, ¡un momento! Imagina observar paisajes únicos e inigualables desde el aire, cataratas, costas, valles, ríos y más de un país de multicolores escenarios, múltiples climas y recursos naturales, un país privilegiando por la mano de Dios y la creación. Abrocha tu cinturón e inicia este magnifico vuelo por Costa Rica.

Mis primeros vuelos los realicé a la Zona Sur, donde el Golfo Dulce le muestra a todo aquel que lo cruce desde el aire un verdadero espejo de agua donde se conjugan dos cielos, dos mundos, aire y agua, rodeado de parajes verdes, pueblitos, playas y si pones atención quizás puedas ver ballenas y delfines en su hábitat. Durante algunos meses estos enormes animales nos visitan de Norteamérica y vienen aquí a dar a luz a sus crías, por eso en los meses de agosto a noviembre se les ve día a día desde diversos puntos y sitios especiales como es Bahía Ballena.

A mis 32 años existe una frase que llevo grabada en mi mente y dice así: “De niño el cielo robó mi mirada y desde entonces vive allí”. Imaginar todas las maravillas que desde el aire podría observar me ha cautivado toda mi vida, por eso hace dos años como proyecto de vida y parte de mi carrera como fotógrafo profesional decidí documentar mi país desde el aire y mostrarlo a través de un proyecto que titulé “Costa Rica desde el aire”.

En uno de mis vuelos cerca de las costas de este punto el piloto me dijo: “Pablo, indícame qué deseas hacer para tus tomas”. Inmediatamente le dije: “Baja todo lo que puedas, quiero ver si podemos observar ballenas”. La maniobra nos tomó pocos segundos, pero luego de tres giros aún nada, cuatro o cinco giros y parecía que no estaban allí.

Cada viaje, cada aventura hace que los niveles de emoción y adrenalina aumenten, pero puedo decir que en esta ocasión los míos llegaron a su tope máximo, al igual que mi cámara, por las alturas de mi país, el cual me mostró todo su esplendor natural.

En el último intento desde lo profundo emerge una enorme ballena, es momento de alistar la cámara, giro rápido y el piloto me pone en posición de disparo fotográfico, pero ¡esperen! De pronto tenemos también un ballenato y dos delfines jugando a su alrededor. Es un espectáculo que me deja sin palabras.

“Costa Rica desde el aire”, no creo que algún turista diga “¡esto no es para mí!”. Viví durante semanas esta gran aventura. Un buen día me acompañaba un grupo de mexicanos, ellos regresaban a su país en horas de la noche y tuvieron la oportunidad, al igual que yo, de realizar avistamiento de ballenas y delfines, su emoción era tal que brindaron en el aire y dijeron, volviéndose a ver unos a otros: “Esto es único en la vida”. Como único en la vida es recorrer las costas del Pacífico Norte, lugar de hermosas playas de colores turquesa y azul intenso, bañadas de sol, arena blanca y miles de turistas que llegan a ellas año tras año. Es normal divisar estos paisajes paradisiacos desde el aire cuando se vuela desde San José y Tambor, Tamarindo, Nosara, Punta Islita, Carrillo y algunos otros puntos. La variedad de microclimas, paisajes, colores y más que puedes encontrar cuando vuelas es una experiencia maravillosa, podemos pasar en tan solo horas de una playa soleada a un lugar más húmedo y frío.

Recuerdo que en mi viaje a Tortuguero subí al avión con tal emoción por lograr fotografías de sus canales, al aterrizar en la pista llovía mucho, bajé mi equipo y me quedé de pie debajo del ala del avión, esperamos 15 minutos y volví a subir. No lo podía creer, no iba a lograr las tomas requeridas, pero en Costa Rica el clima es parte de la belleza de esta tierra y sus encantos. Motores en marcha, máxima potencia, el piloto me indica izquierda sobre la costa, derecha sobre los canales, le dije: “Haz una salida a tu derecha”. “Copiado”, me respondió. Salida a la derecha, timón atrás y nos elevamos, giró de pronto, un claro azul en el cielo y deja pasar los rayos de luz, los canales me han quedado con la suficiente luz natural para lograr la toma que necesitaba. Quizás volé hasta allá esperando muchas tomas pero con una valió la pena. Hace menos de un año di inicio a una gran producción para la importante compañía Sansa, que opera todos los destinos domésticos de Costa Rica. Los viajes hacia cada aventura se iniciaban de la tierra al cielo, miles de fotografías de norte a sur, de este a oeste, horas de vuelo en días de sol, lluvia, turbulencia y calma total; cada vez que estoy arriba y veo esas grandes alas de metal deslizarse suavemente entre las nubes y el cielo azul solo una frase nace desde mi corazón y llega a mis pensamientos: “Volar es llevar a Dios en el corazón y libertad en el alma”. Al volar dejo cada problema en tierra, cada situación en el olvido bajo miles de pies de altura, solo mi cámara, Dios, yo y la indescriptible sensación de libertad y emoción que siento. “Costa Rica desde el aire” nació hace más de cuatro años y hasta la fecha aún sigo con este proyecto, con un banco de miles de fotografías que espero exponer alrededor del mundo,

con el éxito de una primera exposición que movió a los medios más importantes de este país a difundir esta información. Pronto llevaré a cabo más exposiciones de todo este material que no es mío, es de todos. “Costa Rica desde el aire” me ha llevado a volar desde los equipos más pequeños hasta los más grandes, desde aviones monomotor hasta bimotor, helicópteros sin puertas, avionetas sin puertas, tan solo con un arnés entre el infinito y yo para lograr las tomas más impresionantes que un fotógrafo aéreo y de aventura pueda captar. Volcanes, playas, veredas, desembocaduras, cascadas, ciudades, puertos, pueblitos, amaneceres y atardeceres no solo han quedado en la memoria de mi cámara sino también en la de mi corazón y ahora los comparto con todos ustedes. “Costa Rica desde el aire”, un mundo de aventura infinita y única, creación de Dios para la humanidad.

hinking about traveling somewhere else on the world is synonymous of doing so via land either in vehicle, walking or some other means of transportation but without lifting the feet of the earth, but one moment! Imagine observing unique and unbeatable landscapes from the air, waterfalls, coasts, valleys, rivers and more of a country full of multicolored scenarios, multiple climates and natural resources, which are in a place privileged by the hand of God and creation, buckle your seat belt and start this magnificent flight through “Costa Rica” In my 32 years of life there is a phrase that was engraved in my heart that said, “when I was a child, heaven stole my gaze and since then lives there”, imagining all the wonders that from the air I could observe has captivated me all my life, that is why some 2 years ago as a way of life and part of my career as a professional photographer I decided to document my country from the air and show through a project that I entitled “Costa Rica from the Air”. Each journey, each adventure make the levels of excitement and adrenaline increase but I can say that on this occasion, mine reached its ceiling and highest point, just like my camera, from the ground to a week of travel in the heights of my country, which showed me all its natural splendor.

My first flights were to the south area of the country where the Golfo Dulce shows to anyone who crosses over it by air, a true mirror of water where it combines 2 heavens, 2 worlds air and water, surrounded by green landscapes, villages, beaches, and if you put attention maybe you can see whales and dolphins in their natural habitat. During some months, these huge animals visit us from the North of America and they come here to be able to give birth to their offspring, that is why, in the months of August to November you see them day to day from different points and special sites such as the Whale Bay, in one of my flights near the coast of this area the pilot tells me: ”Pablo, just tell me what would you like to do for your pictures, immediately, I told him: “as low as you can, I want to see if we can watch whales, The maneuver took a few seconds, and after 3 turns still nothing, 4 and 5 turns and it seemed that they were not there, in the last attempt, from the depth emerges a huge whale, it is time to ready the camera, a quick turn and the pilot puts me in photo shooting position, but wait! Suddenly we have a whale calf and 2 dolphins playing around, it is quite the spectacle that leaves me without words.

osta Rica from the air, I do not think anyone would say, this is not for me! I experienced for weeks this great special adventure, a good day I accompanied a group of Mexicans, they were returning to their country in the early hours of the night and they had the opportunity just like me, to witness sightings of whales and dolphins, the excitement was such that they toast in the air looking at each other, saying that this is a once in a lifetime moment. As unique in life as traveling around the coasts of the North Pacific, a place of beautiful beaches of turquoise and intense blue, bathed with sunshine, white sand and thousands of tourists who come to them year after year, it is normal to see these paradisiacal countries from the air when flying from San Jose and Tambor, Tamarindo, Nosara, Punta Islita, Carrillo and some other points. The variety of micro climates, landscapes, colors, and more that you can find when you fly is a wonderful experience, we can spend in just a few hours from a sunny beach to a place more cold and wet.

I remember on my trip to Tortuguero I got on the plane with such excitement to achieve photographs of their canals, when we land it was raining a lot, I stayed on my feet below the plane wings, put my equipment down and I waited 15 minutes and went back inside the plane, I couldn’t’ t believe it, I was not going to achieve the shots required, but in Costa Rica the weather is part of the beauty of this land and its charms, running motors, maximum power, the pilot tells me left side the coast, right side the channels, I told him make a turn to your right, - “copied” - he told me, exit to the right, rudder back and we rise, and suddenly it turn a clear blue sky and the rays of light go through, the canals have enough natural light to achieve the photo that I needed, perhaps I flew back there, waiting for many shots, but with one was worth it. Less than a year ago I started a large production for an important company, Sansa, which operates all domestic destinations of Costa Rica, in each journey toward each adventure, the beginning from earth to the air, thousands of pictures from north to south, from east to west, hours of flight in days of sunshine, rain, turbulence and total calmness, every time I am up there and I see these large wings of metal sliding smoothly between the clouds and blue sky only a phrase comes from my heart and goes to my thoughts “Flying is bringing God into the heart and freedom in the soul” by flying I left each problem on the ground, each situation in forgotten among thousands of feet high, only my camera, me and God and the indescribable sense of freedom and excitement that I feel.

Costa Rica from the air was born over 4 years ago and to date I am still with this project, with a pool of thousands of photos that I hope to expose around the world, with the success of the first exhibition that summoned to the most important media of this country to disseminate this information, soon I’ll do more exhibitions of all this material that is not mine, it belongs to all of us. Costa Rica from the air, has led me to fly in the smaller aircraft up to the largest, from single-engine airplanes up to twin-engine, helicopters without doors, small planes without doors, only with a harness, between the infinite and I, to take the most impressive shots that an aerial photographer and adventure can achieve. Volcanoes, beaches, trails, river mouths, waterfalls, cities, ports, towns, sunrises and sunsets have not only been kept in the memory of my camera, but also in my heart and now I share them with all of you. This amazing adventure that I have lived and live, I share it with those who want to experience it in specific tours through my country and that are available to the general public through my trade mark Paul Lopez Photography Costa Rica from the air, a world of infinite adventure, unique in the world, creation of God for humanity.

a provincia de Limón siempre ha presentado un gran atractivo para los turistas nacionales y extranjeros. Playas, pueblos, cultura y en especial la naturaleza han sido el punto llamativo a la hora de visitar el Atlántico costarricense, ya que presenta 60 especies de mamíferos, 309 de aves, 57 de anfibios, 30 de peces de agua dulce y más de 2.000 entre árboles y plantas. Visitando Tortuguero se encontrará con algo más que un pueblo y una playa donde llegan tortugas a desovar. En su visita al Atlántico Norte el turista podrá conocer una comunidad y una cultura limonenses que están en pleno desarrollo económico, social y turístico.

La ruta

Hoy en día existen muchas alternativas de transporte para llegar a Tortuguero. Puede viajar en avión o desde la ciudad de Limón (específicamente Moín), pero la ruta más común y utilizada por los viajeros es tomar un autobús o automóvil y dirigirse por la ruta 32 de San José a Limón. A los 45 minutos llega a Guápiles, de ahí se enrumba hacia Cariari. Si va en vehículo, el viajero puede seguir hasta el pueblo de Pavona. El turista que se moviliza en autobús público puede tomar otro que lo lleva directo hasta Pavona en una duración aproximada de 45 minutos. Pavona es el último punto en el cual se puede acceder a la zona en automóvil si se dirige a Tortuguero. El pueblo cuenta con un embarcadero y un restaurante. En ese lugar hay un constante flujo de buses, tanto públicos como privados. De ahí el único medio de transporte hacia el destino final es una lancha o un bote.

El viaje en lancha desde el río Suerte hasta Tortuguero dura alrededor de 1 hora y 30 minutos. En el trayecto se puede apreciar mucha vegetación característica de la zona y si el bote va despacio la persona podrá ver mucha vida animal como aves, lagartos y monos, entre otros, dando una pista o presagio de lo que encontrará en Tortuguero.

Datos de Tortuguero:

Tortuguero es el sitio de desove más importante en la mitad occidental del Caribe para la tortuga verde (Chelonia mydas). Otras especies de tortugas de mar que también desovan a lo largo del canal del parque son carey y baula. La tortuga verde es mediana, de aletas largas y pesa entre 100 y 200 kilogramos. El relieve del parque consiste en un inmenso pantano aluvial, formado por la unión de deltas; también presenta desembocaduras navegables que forman parte del parque del sureste al noroeste. Algunos cauces y pantanos son hábitat de algunas especies de tortugas, manatíes, lagartos y cocodrilos. Tortuguero es una de las regiones más lluviosas del país, (entre 5.000-6.000 mm por año) y una de las áreas silvestres con mayor variedad biológica. Se han identificado 11 hábitats en el parque. Dentro de la vegetación encontramos palmas de coco, berma, tamarindo salvaje, cativo, helecho y jacintos de agua. Dentro de la variedad de fauna encontramos monos, pájaros, mamíferos como danta, jaguar, perezoso de tres dedos, mono cariblanco, mono araña y mono aullador (congo). También gran variedad de ranas viven en la zona.

Un recorrido por el pueblo de Tortuguero se puede hacer en cualquier momento. El pueblo, a pesar de ser pequeño, presenta un desarrollo económico, comercial y social. Cuenta con pequeñas tiendas de artesanías, un puesto de Cruz Roja y policía municipal, instituto de enseñanza, iglesia, supermercados, parque de recreación, centros de información turística y en sus alrededores encontramos casas y hoteles.

El turista tiene la opción de abastecerse de comida, ir a restaurantes, tener acceso a Internet o hacer llamadas locales o internacionales. Varios años atrás la comunidad de Tortuguero era un lugar muy aislado, el cual no contaba con el parque nacional ni las zonas protegidas. Los lugareños vivían de la caza, pesca y comercio de madera, la cual era transportada a diferentes puntos a través de los canales. Sin embargo con el crecimiento del pueblo y la necesidad por otras actividades económicas se optó por medidas de conservación de las tortugas y de la fauna para desarrollar una economía con base en el turismo de naturaleza y sostenible.

Tours

Son varios los toures y atracciones disponibles en Tortuguero: • - Desove de tortugas: con guías expertos provenientes de la zona de Tortuguero hacemos un recorrido nocturno por la playa para ver el desove de las tortugas verdes (de julio a mediados de octubre). Es considerado el evento natural más importante de Tortuguero y el que más buscan los turistas presenciar.

Es recomendable vestirse con ropa oscura, zapatos para caminar e ir bien hidratado. Una de las normas establecidas por el parque en Tortuguero es que para los turistas está terminantemente prohibido llevar equipo fotográfico, de video y artículos electrónicos de uso personal durante el tour.

Los guías explican que con esta norma se pretende que cada grupo de 10 a 15 personas vaya a presenciar el desove de la forma más natural posible y sin que se intervenga en el curso natural de las tortugas verdes en su llegada a la playa y a la hora de encontrar su espacio para desovar.

Es tan grande la cantidad de turistas que llegan a realizar el tour una noche que el parque ha establecido diferentes horarios (de 7 p.m. a 11 p.m). Con una única linterna especial de luz roja el guía nos indica el lugar exacto donde se encuentra la tortuga. El desove dura alrededor de 2 horas (llegada a la playa, búsqueda de un espacio para desovar, excavación de un hueco y prepararlo para el desove; el desove propiamente dura de 30 a 45 minutos, tapar el hueco, un breve descanso y el regreso de la tortuga al mar). Es un proceso metódico y a la vez agotador que realiza el animal.

Al día siguiente, alrededor de las 5 a.m., el turista tiene la opción de hacer un recorrido por la playa para ver tortugas pequeñas recién salidas del huevo en su recorrido hacia el mar. Se tuvo la oportunidad de encontrar dos lugares donde se presenció la salida a la superficie de las tortuguitas. Se contaron alrededor de 15 que hicieron su recorrido de 5 a 10 minutos hacia el mar. Es una oportunidad única para estar a la par de una tortuga tan pequeña en su estado natural y poder tomar fotografías y video.

Otro tour muy recomendado y frecuentado es navegar por los canales en bote junto con un guía experto en fauna. Es un recorrido que dura alrededor de 2 horas y media, el turista podrá contemplar la belleza del canal, su gran vegetación, variedad de flores, plantas y árboles de gran altura. En el transcurso también puede avistar aves, lagartijas verdes, lagartos, monos y otros animales propios de la zona del Caribe. Existe un tour opcional en bote, en el cual se trata de encontrar el manatí, animal acuático que se encuentra en peligro de extinción pero que se protege en la zona.

El tour por el Parque Nacional Tortuguero es un recorrido por los senderos, donde se podrá estar propiamente dentro de la vegetación y diversidad natural que presenta la zona del Caribe. En esos recorridos la persona puede ver más detalladamente animales como el mono cariblanco y mono araña, perezosos, pizotes y tepezcuintles, entre otros. In search of sea turtles and adventure

he province of Limon has always presented a major attraction for national and foreign tourists. Beaches, peoples, culture and in particular nature has been the striking point when visiting the Atlantic of Costa Rica as it presents 60 species of mammals, 309 birds, 57 amphibians, 30 species of freshwater fish and more than 2000 species of trees and plants. By visiting Tortuguero you will find yourself with something more than a village and a beach where turtles come to lay their eggs. In his visit to the north Atlantic region, the tourist can experience the community and “limonense” culture which is in its full economic, social and touristic development..

The route

Nowadays, there are many transportation alternatives to go to Tortuguero. Either by plane or from the city of Limon (specifically Moin) but the most common route used by travellers is to take a bus or car and proceed to route 32 from San Jose to Limon. After 45 minutes you can reach the town of Guapiles. From there take the road toward the city of Cariari. If you are traveling by car, follow this route until the village La Pavona. The tourist that travels by public bus transportation, can take another bus that takes them directly to La Pavona Village, in an estimated time of 45 minutes. La Pavona is the last point at which you can access the area by car if you are going to Tortuguero. The village has a pier and a restaurant. In the same place there is a constant flow of buses both private and public service. From there, the only means of transportation to the final destination is by boat.

The boat trip from the Tortuguero river to Suerte river lasts around 1 hour and 30 minutes. During the trip, you can appreciate lots of vegetation, characteristic of the area and if in a moderate or slow speed boat, the person will be able to see lots of animal life such as birds, lizards, monkeys, among others giving as a sample or preview of what you will truly find in the Tortuguero area.

Details of Tortuguero:

Tortuguero is the most important site of nesting grounds in the western half of the Caribbean for the green turtle (Chelonia mydas). Other species of sea turtles that also loft along the canal of the park, are the Hawksbill and the Leatherback. The green turtle is medium sized, long-finned and weighs between 100 and 200 kilograms. The relief of the park consists of a huge alluvial swamp, formed by a union of deltas and also presents inland waterways that are part of the park from southeast to northwest. Some rivers and reservoirs are habitat for some species of turtles, manatees, alligators and crocodiles. Tortuguero is one of the rainiest regions of the country, (between 5,000 -6,000 mm per year) and is one of the wilderness areas with the greatest biological variety. 11 Habitats have been identified in the park. Within the vegetation we found the coconut palms, the berm, Wild Tamarind, Prioria copaifera, fern, water hyacinth Within the variety of fauna species we find monkeys, birds, and mammals such as the tapir, jaguar, three-toed sloth, Cariblanco monkeys, spider monkeys and the red howler monkey (Congo). Also a variety of frogs living in the area.

The tour of the Tortuguero National Park, is a tour of the trails where you can be properly within the vegetation and natural diversity that presents the Caribbean area. On these trips the person can see in detail several kinds of animals such as the cariblanco monkeys and spider monkeys, sloths, pizotes, tepezcuintles, among others. The colors of small frogs, lizards such as the Basilisk will be found not only in the park but in the whole area of the canals.Part of the alternate paths of the park lead to the actual beach, area totally protected and clean.

Tour of the village of Tortuguero can be done at any time. The village, in spite of being small, presents an economic, social, and commercial development. The place has small craft shops, a red cross post and municipal police, educational institute, a church, supermarkets, a recreation park, tourist information centers and in its surroundings you can find houses and hotels.

Toures

There are several tours and attractions available in Tortuguero: • Turtles nesting: With expert guides from the area of Tortuguero , we night travel by the beach to see nesting Green turtles during season (which covers the period from July until midOctober). It is considered the most important natural event of Tortuguero and the most wanted by the tourists to witness. It is recommended that you wear dark clothing, walking shoes and go well hydrated. One of the standards established by the Park in Tortuguero, is that, is forbidden to bring photographic equipment, video and electronic items of personal use during the tour.

The guides explain that with these rules, it is intended that each group of 10 to 15 people go to watch the spawning in the most natural way possible and without intervening the natural course of the green turtles in its arrival to the beach and the time to find its space to spawn. It is such a large amount of tourists who come to make the tour at night, that the park has established different schedules (from 7pm to 11pm ) to complete the tour.

With a single special flashlight of red light used by the guide, he indicate us the exact location where the tortoise is. The whole process of the tortoise in their spawning lasts about 2 hours (arrival at the beach, search for a space to spawn, digging a hole and prepare it for spawning; the spawning process itself that lasts from 30 to 45 minutes, plug the hole, a short break and the return of the turtle to the sea). It is a methodical process and at the same time tiring that the animal performs.

The next day, around 5 in the morning, the tourists have the option to take a tour to the beach to see small turtles fresh out of the egg in its journey towards the sea.

We had the chance to find two places where we saw the exit to the surface of the baby tortoises. There were about 15 little turtles that made their way from 5 to 10 minutes to the sea. It is a unique opportunity to be next to a turtle so small in its natural environment and be able to take pictures and video.

Another very highly recommended and frequented tour is to navigate along the canals by boat with a fauna expert guide. It is a tour that lasts around two and a half hours, the tourist will be able to contemplate the beauty of the canal, its great vegetation, variety of flowers, plants and trees of high altitude. Also In the course can be watched birds, green lizards, lizards, monkeys and other animals from the Caribbean area. There is an optional boat tour in which it is tried to find the manatee, aquatic animal that is in danger of extinction, but which it is tried to preserve in the area.

The tourist has the option of obtaining supplies of food, go to restaurants, have access to internet or local or international calls. Several years ago the community of Tortuguero was a very isolated place, which did not have a National Park or protected areas.

The locals lived by hunting, fishing and trading of wood which was transported to different points through the channels. However with the growth of the town and the need for other economic activities, they have opted for measures for the conservation of turtles and the fauna in order to develop an economy based on the nature and sustainable tourism.

El jaguar, la danta, el caimán y las aves canoras estarán ahora más protegidas en Costa Rica, gracias a una nueva ley propuesta e impulsada por los propios ciudadanos, que prohíbe la caza deportiva de cualquier especie. The jaguar, tapir, the Cayman and the songbirds will be more protected now in Costa Rica, thanks to a new proposed law driven by the citizens themselves, which prohibits sport hunting of any kind.

osta Rica, reconocido mundialmente por su reputación de “destino verde”, se convirtió en el mes de diciembre en la primera nación de América Latina en prohibir la caza deportiva. La nueva Ley de Vida Silvestre es además la primera legislación en centroamérica aprobada por el mecanismo de la “iniciativa popular”, es decir que fue presentada por los propios ciudadanos hace dos años, con 177.000 firmas apoyando la prohibición y recogidas por la Asociación Preservacionista de Flora y Fauna (Apreflofas) A partir de la entrada en vigor de la ley, Costa Rica no otorgará más licencias de caza y sus ciudadanos tampoco podrán tener animales silvestres como mascotas. Quienes cacen un animal en Costa Rica serán multados con hasta $3.000 dólares y, dependiendo de la especie, podrían incluso ser condenados a entre dos y cuatro meses de prisión. La costumbre de tener como mascotas a animales silvestres como aves, iguanas, monos y mapaches también deberá cambiar con la nueva legislación, que prohíbe totalmente esta práctica y establece una multa de entre $600 y $1.200 dólares. Pero la ley va más allá y también sanciona la exportación y el tráfico de cualquier especie de flora o fauna silvestre, a la vez que crea un Registro Nacional de Vida Silvestre. En ese registro los zoológicos y reservas, tanto públicos como privados, deben inscribir los especímenes que mantengan en cautiverio, tras presentar un plan de manejo. La aprobación de esta ley representa para Costa Rica un paso más para preservar su imagen de país amigable con el medioambiente, la principal razón por la que cada año recibe más de dos millones de turistas. Desde hace más de una década está prohibida la utilización de animales silvestres en circos y espectáculos en Costa Rica, que se anota ahora un nuevo avance en su política de conservación. Costa Rica cuenta con 13.286 kilómetros de territorio protegido (el 26% del total del país), y alberga casi el 5% de la biodiversidad del planeta.

The new Wildlife Law is also the first legislation in Central America adopted by the mechanism of “popular initiative”, that is to say that it was presented by the citizens themselves two years ago, with 177,000 signatures supporting the ban and collected by the Association for the Preservation of Flora and Fauna (APREFLOFAS) When the law comes into effect, Costa Rica does not give more hunting licenses and its citizens may not have wild animals as pets. Those who hunt an animal in Costa Rica will be fined up to $3,000 and, depending on the species, they could even be sentenced to two to four months in prison. The custom of having wild animals as pets, such as birds, iguanas, monkeys and raccoons also must change with the new legislation, which prohibits this practice and establishes a fine of $600 to $1,200. But the law goes beyond and also punishes the export and the traffic of any species of wild flora or fauna, while creating a National Registry of wildlife. In this register,the zoos and reserves, both public and private, must inscribe their specimens kept in captivity, after presenting a management plan. The adoption of this law means to Costa Rica a step forward in preserving its image as a country friendly to the environment, the main reason why each year receives more than two million tourists. For over a decade is prohibited the use of wild animals in circuses and shows in Costa Rica, which scores now a new step in its conservation policy. Costa Rica has 13,286 kilometers of protected territory (26% of the total area of the country), and is home to almost 5% of the planet’s biodiversity.

quel lugar que dejó tantos buenos recuerdos en la niñez de nuestros padres y abuelos poco a poco fue quedando en eso, un simple recuerdo. Sin embargo el Gobierno de Costa Rica en conjunto con los empresarios de la localidad lucha arduamente para dar a conocer el nuevo Puntarenas.

Sin embargo hubo algunos que decidieron poner su empeño y enfrentar el reto de regresarle la vida al turismo puntarenense. A fin de cuentas, los atractivos que hicieron de este un lugar famoso se mantenían ahí, todo era cuestión de trabajo arduo y mucha esperanza en el proyecto.

Debido a su cercanía con el Valle Central, la capital de la provincia, que lleva el mismo nombre, se convirtió en uno de los principales focos turísticos para los costarricenses en décadas atrás. Recibir un poco de brisa marina, broncearse con el sol costero y disfrutar de las comidas tradicionales del lugar eran toda una aventura para los viajeros del área metropolitana.

El renacimiento

Los atractivos naturales e históricos fueron los factores que le dieron a Puntarenas el sobrenombre de “La Perla del Pacífico”. El Paseo de los Turistas y el Balneario Municipal eran los dos atractivos imperdibles cuando se visitaba el centro de Puntarenas. Comerse un granizado (conocido como “churchill”) con leche en polvo, leche condensada y helado, y un afrodisiaco ceviche de chucheca (molusco nativo de la zona) eran los manjares que brindaban energía a los turistas agotados por el sol. A pesar de consolidarse durante tantos años en el mercado turístico nacional, como todo lo que no se cuida, la capital porteña fue perdiendo atractivo en la mente de los turistas y poco a poco su brillo opacado por otras playas no muy lejos de ahí. Con el paso de los años la zona se convirtió más en un lugar de paso y algunos empresarios se fueron, dándole la espalda al pueblo.

Los empresarios volvieron a recordar la belleza de La Perla del Pacífico y sus riquezas naturales, que cualquier zona costera envidiaría. Bañada por aguas cálidas, un frondoso manglar entre el cual navegar, rica biodiversidad marina y preciosas islas a pocos minutos de la costa. Entre los principales atractivos naturales se encuentra una comunidad de aproximadamente 30 delfines de la especie nariz de botella. Por unos pocos dólares una embarcación le puede hacer un recorrido por la costa, disfrutando de la belleza

escénica del Golfo de Nicoya y sus islas, el puerto de Caldera y bordear la “lengüeta de Puntarenas”.

Las Islas

El Golfo de Nicoya posee dos islas de atractivo turístico, una por el factor natural y otra por el histórico. La primera de ellas, Isla Tortuga, se ubica 17 kilómetros al sur de Puntarenas y es una reserva biológica privada, protegida por las leyes de conservación natural costarricenses. Lo que muchos no saben es que Tortuga en realidad está compuesta por dos islas: Alcatraz y Talolinga. En Talolinga se encuentra una pequeña playa y se pueden realizar actividades como buceo, snorkeling, pesca y jet sky, entre otras.

El Balneario

Recientemente aquel mítico balneario que les robaba el sueño a los niños cuando visitaban el Puerto y que había perdido en su totalidad la belleza de sus años mozos fue remodelado y mejorado, gracias a una iniciativa del Instituto Costarricense de Turismo (ICT). La tarea fue ardua y pocos los que confiaban en el proyecto, sin embargo de la mano del gerente general del ICT, Juan Carlos Borbón, recibió el apoyo incondicional del gobierno costarricense.

hat place that left so many good childhood memories in our parents and grandparents was little by little staying like that, a simple memory. However, the Government of Costa Rica in conjunction with employers in town is fighting hard to promote the new Puntarenas. Due to its proximity to the Central Valley, the capital of the province bearing the same name became one of the main tourist centers for local tourism decades ago. Feel a bit of marine breeze, get a tan under the seaside Sun and enjoy traditional meals of the area were all an adventure for travelers in the metropolitan area. The natural and historical attractions were the factors that gave Puntarenas the nickname of Pacific’s Pearl. The “Walk for tourists” and the municipal pool were the two attractions you couldn’t miss when visiting the center of Puntarenas. Eat a granizado (better known as “Churchill”) with powder milk, condensed milk ice cream and an aphrodisiac chucheca ceviche (mollusk native to the area) were the delicacies that provided energy to the tourists exhausted by the Sun. Despite having consolidated for so many years in the domestic tourist market, as everything that is not care for, Buenos Aires was losing appeal in the mind of tourists and little by little its brilliance was overshadowed by other beaches not too far from there. and some entrepreneurs turn their back on the town. However, there were some who chose to use their efforts and confront the challenge of returning life to Puntarenas tourism. Ultimately, the attractions that made this a famous place were still there, everything was a matter of hard work and great hope in the project.

The rebirth

The businessmen came to remember the beauty of the Pearl of the Pacific and its natural riches that any coastal zone may envy. Bathed by warm waters, a lush mangrove forest to navigate in, important marine biodiversity and beautiful islands a few minutes from the coast. Within the main natural attractions, a community of approximately 30 bottlenose dolphins. For a few dollars a boat

can give you a tour of the coast enjoying the scenic beauty of the Gulf of Nicoya and its islands, the port of Caldera and skirting the “Puntarenas tab”.

The islands The Gulf has two islands for tourist attraction, one due to natural factor and another by the historical. The first of these, Turtle Island, is located 17 kilometers south of Puntarenas and is a private biological reserve protected by Costa Rican nature conservation laws. What many don’t know is that Turtle Island actually is composed of two islands, Alcatraz and Talolinga.

The pool Recently, that mythical pool which stole the children’s dreams when visiting the port and that had lost the grace of its younger days was entirely remodeled and improved thanks to an initiative of the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT). The task was arduous for those who believed on the project. However, in the hands of the General Manager of the ICT, Juan Carlos Borbón, the project received the unconditional support of the Costa Rican Government.

Talolinga is a small beach, and you can enjoy activities such as scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing, jet skiing, among others. For his part, Saint Lucas, the second of the major islands of the Gulf of Nicoya is presented as one of the destinations with more historical richness of Costa Rica. Saint Lucas was previously the country’s highest security prison, following the fashion generated by the famous Alcatraz prison in San Francisco Bay. l Instituto Costarricense de Turismo y el Grupo Consorcio de Diseño Internacional firmaron el pasado 29 de noviembre la orden de inicio para la elaboración del proyecto final del Centro Nacional de Congresos y Convenciones de Costa Rica.

Allan Flores, Ministro de Turismo, explicó que esta primera etapa incluye la elaboración y entrega de la revisión del anteproyecto, la creación de la versión final, la realización de los planos constructivos, especificaciones técnicas generales y especiales, la elaboración de presupuesto detallado del proyecto, de la programación de las obras, del programa de mantenimiento para el proyecto y la elaboración de plan de emergencias. El plazo establecido para esta etapa es de 129 días calendario.

Allan Flores, Minister of Tourism, explained that this first stage includes the elaboration and delivery of the review of the preliminary draft, the creation of the final version, the elaboration of the construction plans, general and special technical specifications, the project detailed elaboration of the budget, the schedule, the maintenance program for the project and the elaboration of the emergency plan. The deadline for this stage is of 129 calendar days.

Asimismo; Samuel Bermúdez, Representante Legal de Consorcio Grupo de Diseño Internacional, aseguró que este paso representa el banderazo de salida para iniciar con el proceso de diseño y planos constructivos del Centro Nacional de Congresos y Convenciones, que incluye desde las obras civiles, así como el equipamiento interior y los acabados.

Likewise, Samuel Bermudez, legal representative of the Consortium Group of International Design, assured that this step represents the starting signal for initiating with the design process and construction plans of the National Congresses and Conventions Center that includes civil works, as well as the inner equipment and final details.

De acuerdo con Flores, la etapa II que consiste en la supervisión del contrato de obra del proyecto, se efectuará una vez que se cumplan los requisitos y formalidades para hacer efectivo este contrato.

a llegada de visitantes por los distintos puertos del país creció solo en el mes de septiembre del 2012 en un 12.20 %. El hecho estadístico está sustentado por el crecimiento del aeropuerto de Tocumen en un 17.59 % y el de otros puertos en 35.64%  . Septiembre fue el mes de mayor crecimiento comparado con el mismo mes del año 2011, tuvo 29, 321 visitantes más.   El boletín estadístico de la Autoridad de Turismo Panamá señala que de enero a septiembre el crecimiento total de la entrada de visitantes es de 6.9 % y que llega a la cifra de 1, 530,574, con 98,907 visitantes más.   Como es usual el aeropuerto de Tocumen es la principal entrada turística del país y ya la llegada de visitantes refleja la millonaria cifra de 1,115,647 visitantes con 160, 230 visitantes más y un índice porcentual de 16.77 % de crecimiento.   Otro crecimiento notable es en el renglón de las divisas con 19.5 %. Esto significa que el gasto de los turistas en Panamá llega a B/ 1,673.1 millones de balboas para seguir siendo el turismo más rentable de la región.

Estos y otros temas se discutieron en la Asamblea del Consejo para la Promoción Internacional de la Medicina en Costa Rica, PROMED, que concluye que el sector crece como la espuma, pues entre 2010 y 2011 el país recibió un 33% más de turistas de salud. En 2010 ingresaron 36.000 y en 2011 poco más de 48.000.

PLANES TURISMO MÉDICO 2013

En diciembre PROMED, el Instituto Costarricense de Turismo y el Ministerio de Salud activarán una comisión para desarrollar un plan de trabajo nacional que impulse aún más el sector en 2013. La comisión velará por 5 ejes temáticos: marco legal, regulación, capacitación y competitividad, coordinación interinstitucional y promoción internacional. Durante el año organizará actividades para mejorar la oferta de servicios y aumentar la competitividad del país. Se espera participar en 11 ferias internacionales.

Medical Tourism Plans 2013

In December PROMED, the Costa Rican Tourism Institute and the Ministry of Health will trigger a commission to develop a national plan of action to further boost the sector in 2013. During the year they will organize activities to improve the supply of services and increase the competitiveness of the country. They hope to participate in 11 international trade fairs.

Así lo indicó Yadyra Simón, presidenta de la Asociación Costarricense de Profesionales en Turismo (ACOPROT), quien manifestó su complacencia ante esta decisión.

“Este decreto abre las puertas al posicionamiento de Costa Rica como un destino especializado con los servicios idóneos para la atención de los turistas más bien interesados en el descanso, el relajamiento por medio de los spas establecidos en el país, aguas termales, yoga y otros”, aseguró. Agregó que el turismo de bienestar es una actividad más sofisticada, de la que todas las personas quisieran formar parte, y que en muchísimos países las facilidades son cada vez más especializadas, pues la tecnología, la aromaterapia, la musicoterapia, la variedad de masajes, las aguas termales, la paz, la tranquilidad y el relajamiento son fundamentales para recuperar las energías que se pierden al llevar una vida llena de estrés, de responsabilidades y muy convulsionada.

En medio del Golfo de Panamá hay unas 200 islas y cayos que forman el Archipiélago de Las Perlas, llamado así por la gran cantidad de perlas que fueron extraídas de sus aguas durante la época colonial.

En las cristalinas aguas del Caribe, las abundantes formaciones coralinas invitan a disfrutar del buceo y el esnórquel, así como del avistamiento de cetáceos, pesca y paseos acuáticos entre los manglares. También hay acción para los amantes del surf, que encontrarán en algunos puntos de la costa gigantescas olas de blancas crestas.

Hermosas mansiones y hoteles complementan este paraíso del Pacífico, al que también las ballenas visitan con frecuencia. En Las Perlas se puede hacer buceo de profundidad, esnórquel y paseos en pequeños cruceros.

Las grandes extensiones de manglares, islas y costas son el hábitat de variadas especies marinas y terrestres. En las aguas del golfo abunda la buena pesca y los alrededores de las islas son excelentes para el buceo y el esnórquel. En la costa pacífica, a menos de dos horas de la ciudad capital, existe un cordón de hermosas playas que componen el Arco Seco, una región que permanece soleada la mayor parte del año. En esta costa del sol eterno, balneario preferido de la población panameña, se han desarrollado complejos residenciales de fin de semana y resorts internacionales que ofrecen la modalidad turística “todo incluido”. Las playas son extensas, algunas tranquilas y otras con olas perfectas para el surf, y son muy visitadas por turistas procedentes de Europa y Norteamérica.

CST Certificación para la sostenibilidad turistica en Costa Rica continuá generando beneficios al país!

horros de más de un 70% en el consumo de electricidad y alrededor de un 60% en agua, aumento en el consumo de productos biodegradables y orgánicos, disminución de más de un 75% en el consumo de resmas de papel y aumento de más de un 50% en la adquisición de alimentos producidos localmentes son algunos de los múltiples beneficios que ha generado la Certificación para la Sostenibilidad Turística (CST) en 65 empresas de hospedaje y 29 turoperadores del país que atendieron la consulta del Instituto Costarricense de Turismo (ICT). Estos datos forman parte de una investigación realizada por el ICT, en la que se demuestra el impacto generado por la CST en estas compañías (empresas de hospedaje y turoperadores) después de su certificación. La segunda parte de esta investigación pretende arrojar datos cuantitativos que reflejen el impacto de las prácticas sostenibles y la utilidad económica que se percibe con la implementación de la CST. Para Allan Flores, ministro de Turismo, desde hace más de 15 años Costa Rica decidió consolidar la sostenibilidad como elemento diferenciador de la actividad turística y como modelo de desarrollo, por medio de la CST. “Esta iniciativa, que como idea nació del sector privado y encontró cabida, impulso y dedicación por parte del ICT, al punto que es reconocida por la Organización Mundial de Turismo (OMT), nos consolida como pioneros en el mundo al promover a las empresas que, más allá de prácticas aisladas, resguardan un verdadero compromiso con el desarrollo del turismo sostenible, que es la actividad económica en la cual se respeta el medio ambiente, causándole el menor impacto posible y siendo amigables con el entorno social y cultural del país”, declaró Flores. Actualmente Costa Rica cuenta con 278 empresas certificadas con la CST (208 establecimientos de hospedaje, 64 turoperadores, 4 arrendadoras de vehículos y 2 parques temáticos). Esta cifra representa casi el 30% del total de la oferta turística declarada de los sectores mencionados.

Este año 82 empresas han obtenido la CST y al cierre del año se tendrá 93 (74 empresas de hospedaje, 15 turoperadores, 1 empresa rentadora de vehículos y 3 parques temáticos sostenibles), de las cuales 45 alcanzarán este reconocimiento por primera vez y 48 son producto de una revaluación y por ende una recertificación. Según Alberto López, coordinador del Programa de Sostenibilidad Turística del ICT, el principal objetivo es que a mediano plazo toda la cadena de valor turístico posea la CST, de manera que la experiencia turística en el país pueda ser certificada para continuar en la consolidación de la sostenibilidad como eje fundamental de la industria turística, razón por la cual se trabaja en otras normas en sectores como el gastronómico y la turoperación marino costera. Entre los principales beneficios para las empresas con la CST están: diferenciación en la estrategia de mercadeo institucional, página web exclusiva, participación en ferias internacionales con un 20% de descuento por nivel de CST obtenido, mercadeo país y material promocional del departamento, múltiples publicaciones (revistas y periódicos, entre otros).

Sobre CST

Desde 1997 Costa Rica implementó la CST, una norma reconocida por la OMT como un programa pionero que ha logrado modificar la forma de hacer turismo. Las empresas turísticas interesadas en la certificación someten sus operaciones voluntariamente a evaluación de técnicos de la Comisión Nacional de Acreditación para determinar el nivel de cumplimiento en una cantidad determinada de ítems. Una de las grandes fortalezas con que cuenta este programa es que es totalmente gratuito para el empresario. La certificación tiene una vigencia de dos años, lo que estimula a las empresas a mantener de manera constante todos sus procesos sostenibles, de lo contrario se arriesgan a perder la CST en la siguiente evaluación o bien a tener un nivel más bajo, dado que las categoriza de 1 a 5 niveles de sostenibilidad. www.turismo-sostenible.co.cr

El siguiente cuadro detalla el porcentaje de empresas con respuesta positiva a la pregunta planteada sobre si la CST ha tenido impacto (respuesta SÍ o NO). La forma de leer los datos es, por ejemplo en la primera línea: Para el 58% de los hoteles entrevistados y para el 50% de los turoperadores se dio una disminución del consumo de agua en metros cúbicos después de la implementación de la CST.

CST Certification for the touristic sustainability in Costa Rica continues generating benefits to the country!

avings of more than a 70% in the consumption of electricity and around 60% in water, the raise in the consumption of biodegradable and organic products, the diminishment of more than a 75% in the consumption of paper and a raise of more than a 50% in the acquisition of food produced locally, are some of the multiple benefits that the Touristic Sustainability Certification (CST) had generated in 65 accommodation companies and 29 tour operators of the country that answered the call of the ICT. These data are part of a research made by the Costa Rican Tourism Institute, in which is shown the impact generated by the CST on these companies (accommodation companies and tour operators) after their certification. The second part of this investigation is intended to throw quantitative data that reflects the impact of the sustainable practices and the economic profit perceived with the implementation of the CST. For the Minister of Tourism, Allan Flores, for over 15 years, Costa Rica decided to consolidate the sustainability as a differentiating factor of the touristic activity and as model of development, through the Certification for Touristic Sustainability. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This initiative that as an idea was born from the private sector and found room, boost and dedication from the ICT, to the point that is recognized by the Tourism Organization, consolidate us as pioneers in the world when promoting the companies that beyond isolated practices, keep a true commitment with the sustainable tourist development, which is economic activity in which the environment is respected, causing less possible impact and being friendly with the social and cultural environment of the countryâ&#x20AC;?. pointed Flores. Currently, the country has 278 CST certified companies (208 accommodation places, 64 tour operators, 4 car rental and 2 theme parks). This figure represents almost 30% of the total touristic offer reported for the sectors mentioned.

According to Alberto Lopez, Coordinator of the Touristic Sustainability Program of the ICT, the main objective is that in a medium-term, all of the touristic value chain has the CST, so that touristic experience in the country can be certified, to continue the consolidation of the sustainability as an essential axis of the touristic industry, reason why it works in other norms in sectors as the gastronomic and marine coastal tour operation. Among the main benefits for the companies with the CST are: distinction in the strategy of institutional marketing, exclusive web page, involvement in international fairs with a 20% discount by level of CST obtained, country marketing and promotional material from the Department, multiple publications (magazines, papers, among others).

About CST

In 1997, the country implemented the CST, a regulation recognized by the OMT, as a pioneer program which has been able to change the way tourism is done.. Any tourist company interest on getting this certification submits its operations voluntary to an evaluation by the Technicians from the National Accreditation Committee, to determine the degree of compliance of a certain amount of items. One of the greatest strengths this program has is that is available completely free of charge. The certification is valid for two years, which promotes companies to keep all their processes sostenible, otherwise they risk to lose or downgrade the CST at their next evaluation, since they are classified in a 1 to 5 scale www.turismo-sostenible.co.cr
