Costa Rica COSTA RICA Y CHINA ESTÁN PRÓXIMOS A FIRMAR ACUERDO DE CIELOS ABIERTOS Costa Rica and China will sign an open skies agreement

urante el pasado mes de julio, una delegación costarricense, integrada por el ministro de Turismo, Allan Flores y la viceministra de Transportes, Ana Cristina Jenkins, viajó a China para negociar un convenio de cielos abiertos que permita impulsar el turismo entre ambos países, facilitando las conexiones aéreas. El embajador de Costa Rica en Pekín, Marco Vinicio Ruiz, explicó que “Se ha venido trabajando arduamente entre las aviaciones de cada país; hemos tenido conversaciones con aerolíneas para que se interesen en la ruta y en abril una delegación de empresarios turísticos de Costa Rica estuvo en China.”

destacó Ruiz, quien añadió que el Gobierno de Costa Rica trabaja en la flexibilidad adicional en materia de visas que se les otorgará a los ciudadanos chinos. Costa Rica está apostando su turismo a Asia y por eso este año participó, por primera vez, en la feria internacional del turismo COTTM Beijing 2013, con el objetivo de atraer turistas asiáticos. Según datos de la Organización Mundial de Turismo (OMT), los turistas chinos son quienes más gastan en sus viajes. En 2012, invirtieron US$102.000 millones.

Para el diplomático costarricense es crucial que un país dependiente, en buena parte del turismo como lo es Costa Rica, desarrolle un mercado como el chino, que es el de mayor crecimiento de viajeros en el mundo.

Costa Rica is being promotes in Asia for the first time at the international tourism fair COTTM Beijing 2013; aiming to attract Asian tourists. According to data from the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Chinese tourists spent the most their trips. In 2012, they spend $102 billion USD.

Juan Santamaria International Airport will expand its capacity by 18% La subdirectora de Aviación Civil, Vilma López, anunció la ampliación del Aeropuerto Juan Santamaría, ubicado en San José, capital costarricense. Según dijo López, las obras de ampliación del 18% están contempladas en el plan maestro de la terminal y las salas deberán estar terminadas en un plazo máximo de un año. Los trabajos se iniciarán en noviembre y contemplan incrementar su capacidad de tránsito de pasajeros un 18% al añadir dos salas de abordaje cuyos puentes de contacto con la pista permitirán recibir aviones de mayor tamaño. Se estima que estas áreas permitirán el paso de 260.000 pasajeros adicionales por año. The Deputy Director of Civil Aviation, Vilma Lopez, announced the expansion of Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO), located in the capital city of San Jose, Costa Rica. Ms. Lopez said that the 18% expansion was included in the terminal’s Master Plan which states that the addition of the two new boarding areas with jetways capable of handling larger aircraft must be finished within a year. Work will begin in November and is expected to increase passenger traffic at the airport by 18%, or an additional 260,000 passengers per year.

El año pasado la inversión de nuevas construcciones de hoteles alcanzó un poco más de los 19,000 metros cuadrados en Guanacaste, muy por encima de los 3,000 metros cuadrados en Puntarenas.

urante el primer semestre de 2013 se registraron en Costa Rica 1.320.549 llegadas internacionales por todos los puertos, para un crecimiento del 2,7% en relación con el mismo periodo del año anterior, de acuerdo con los datos proporcionados por la Dirección General de Migración y Extranjería (DGME) y analizados por el Instituto Costarricense de Turismo (ICT). En el caso del ingreso por vía aérea, para el primer semestre del presente año se reportó un crecimiento del 2,6%; es decir, 22.302 llegadas internacionales más que en 2012, destacando un comportamiento positivo en junio de 2013 con un crecimiento del 5,3% en relación con el mismo periodo del año anterior. El principal puerto de entrada del país, el Aeropuerto Internacional Juan Santamaría, reportó un total de 678.491 llegadas internacionales, para un crecimiento del 3,5% en comparación con el primer semestre de 2012. Mientras que el Aeropuerto Internacional Daniel Oduber Quirós, después de alcanzar un crecimiento exponencial el año anterior, durante este periodo muestra una disminución

del -0,5%, pasando de 198.913 llegadas internacionales de enero a junio de 2012 a 197.903 en el mismo periodo de este año, es decir 1.010 llegadas menos. “Uno de los datos a resaltar es que durante este primer semestre se reflejó un repunte en los mercados emergentes como China, México, Brasil y Reino Unido”, comentó Allan Flores, ministro de Turismo. Además dijo que se espera que el crecimiento turístico para este año se apegue a las estimaciones de la Organización Mundial de Turismo, que prevén un incremento de entre un 3% y un 4% para 2013. Las autoridades de turismo de Guatemala mantienen la apuesta por el turismo cultural, para alcanzar una meta de 1.9 millones de visitantes. “El año pasado se generó una gran expectativa por la conmemoración del 13 Bak’tun, aunque no se tenía una proyección específica del impacto que se podría tener con la celebración”. Declaró la Sra. Maru Acevedo, subdirectora del Instituto Guatemalteco de Turismo (INGUAT). Entre las actividades planeadas para noviembre, se organiza la primera Copa de Pelota Maya, con participantes de México, El Salvador, Honduras y Belice, además de Guatemala.

Panamá TRÁNSITO DE VIAJEROS CRECIÓ EN TOCUMEN DURANTE EL PRIMER SEMESTRE Traffic up at Tocumen during the first quarter

urante el primer semestre del año, el aeropuerto internacional de Tocumen, principal hub de conexiones en Centroamérica, atendió a 3.766.065 viajeros, para un crecimiento de 12,9% respecto a los primeros seis meses de 2012.

Entre los cuatro primeros mercados de procedencia de los pasajeros que utilizaron el Aeropuerto de Tocumen están: Miami, con 255.105 viajeros; Bogotá, 247.290; San José de Costa Rica, 185.262 y Caracas con 152.523 pasajeros.

El Departamento de Estadísticas del Aeropuerto Internacional de Tocumen, precisó que entre enero y junio de 2013 ingresaron a Panamá un total de 990.480 visitantes, 6,5 % más que durante los primeros seis meses del año pasado. La principal puerta de entrada y salida del país centroamericano cerró el año pasado con un promedio de 19 mil pasajeros por día, mientras que el movimiento en Tocumen durante el primer semestre de 2013, tuvo un considerable incremento, al movilizar 20.807 viajeros diarios.

La conquista de nuevos destinos y el aumento en las frecuencias de las líneas aéreas europeas y la local Copa, entre otros factores, han generado el crecimiento durante el primer semestre, lo cual ha permitido llegar a nuevos mercados mundiales, contribuyendo con el fortalecimiento de la industria turística nacional, dijeron directivos del aeropuerto. Desde el 10 de julio, Copa comenzó un servicio diario sin escalas entre el Aeropuerto Internacional Logan de Boston y el Hub de Tocumen, con conexiones a través de Latinoamérica.

ara finales de 2013 se espera que la Ciudad de Panamá cuente con 15.700 habitaciones de hotel, con el fin de atender la demanda de turistas en el país, la cual se calcula en 2,2 millones de visitantes para este año, revelaron fuentes empresariales del sector. La nación centroamericana ha implementado nuevas estrategias promocionales de sus atractivos naturales para incrementar el turismo. Un informe de la Asociación Panameña de Hoteles (APATEL), al cual tuvo acceso CND Panamá, indica que a partir de 2014 “se debería de moderar” el ritmo de crecimiento de nuevas habitaciones para llegar a 16.600 y en 2015 se proyecta llegar a 17.900.

Ley de fomento

Jesús Sierra, presidente de APATEL, aseguró que un aporte positivo al desarrollo del sector fue la promulgación de la Ley 80 del 8 de noviembre de 2012, que dicta normas para el fomento de la actividad turística en Panamá, la cual ha permitido incentivar la inversión hotelera en el interior del país. El empresario afirmó que la ampliación del Aeropuerto Internacional de Tocumen es otro de los factores que han motivado el crecimiento de la hotelería, junto con la negociación

de acuerdos bilaterales de transporte aéreo, el mejoramiento vial, los convenios para atraques de cruceros para constituir el país como puerto de origen (home port) y la modernización de las terminales aéreas de Río Hato en Coclé y Colón.

Sierra indicó que también contribuirán al desarrollo franco del turismo en Panamá, la apertura del Museo de la Biodiversidad de Frank Gehry en Amador y la capacitación “constante” del personal de hotelería en el país. “El impulso de la inversión hotelera ha permitido que el país haya avanzado con relativa eficacia en construir condiciones atractivas para el mercado global y particularmente en temas clave para la competitividad internacional del sector”, agregó. Mr. Sierra said that the expansion of the Tocumen International Airport, is another factor which led to the growth of the hotel sector, together with bilateral agreements of air transportation, road improvements, new amenities for the berthing of cruise ships that will use Panama as a home port and the modernization of the air terminals in Rio Hato, Cocle and Colon.

Sierra said that other factors contribute to growth in tourism are, the opening of the Frank Gehry Museum of Biodiversity in Amador and the continuous training of hotel personnel in the country. “The boost in hotel investment has allowed to the country to progress with relative efficiency to establish conditions attractive to the global market and particularly, on key areas of competitiveness required in the sector”, he added.

Honduras RASTROJÓN EL NUEVO SITIO ARQUEOLÓGICO EN HONDURAS Rastrojon, A new archeological site in Honduras

l sitio arqueológico bautizado como Rastrojón, otrora fortaleza militar maya y ubicada a 2 kilómetros del Grupo Principal, en la zona arqueológica Copán Ruinas, fue abierto a los turistas el 1 de agosto. “La ubicación, unida al material arqueológico (puntas de lanza y flecha) y los temas escultóricos, sugiere que Rastrojón fue un lugar diseñado para la defensa de la ciudad durante el tiempo de mayor conflicto político del reino”, se afirma en el comunicado del Instituto Hondureño de Antropología e Historia (IHAH). Las investigaciones realizadas en las excavaciones durante los últimos siete años en Rastrojón revelaron colapsos arquitectónicos dramáticos, provocados por una falla geológica con depresiones pronunciadas. En esta zona los mayas construyeron edificios monumentales que datan del año 700 d.C., aunque el área fue

ocupada desde mucho antes del primer rey, K’inich Yax K’uk’ Mo’, en el 425 d.C., y mucho más tarde, después de su colapso, en el 822 d.C. Los edificios tienen cuartos abovedados, con bloques de piedra canteada, equipados con bancas estucadas y adornados con escultura fina en sus exteriores, lo que indica que fue ocupado por personas de la nobleza. The archaeological site known as Rastrojon, a former Mayan military fortress, and located 2 km from the main group at the Copan ruins archaeological site, was opened to tourists the last August, according to the officials statement. “The location, the archaeological materials including spear and arrow tips and sculptural subjects, suggests that Rastrojon was a place designed for the defense of the city during the

Kingdom`s times of confict”, stated in the communiqué of the Honduran Anthropology and History Institute (IHAH). According with the same statement; investigations into excavations during the past seven years at Rastrojon, revealed a dramatic architectural collapse, caused by a geological fault with pronounced depressions. In this area, the Mayan built monuments and buildings date back to 700 A.C., however the area was inhabited long before the first King, K’inich Yax K’uk ‘ Mo’, in 425 BC, and much later, after its collapse, in 822 A.C. The buildings have vaulted rooms, made with cut stone blocks, equipped with stuccoed benches and decorated with fine sculpture on the outside, indicating that it was occupied by nobility.

FUTURO DE AEROPUERTOS DE COSTA RICA The future of costarrican airports

osta Rica mantiene una compleja estructura de aeropuertos y aeródromos nacionales. Aeródromos son aquellas terminales domesticas que no tienen inmigración, aduanas, torres de control o estaciones de bomberos, solamente una pista de aterrizaje y en algunos casos como Playa Tambor ni siquiera un edificio terminal.

La internacionalización del Aeropuerto Daniel Oduber de Liberia (el cual paso por varios nombres como Llano Grande y Tomas Guardia antes de convertirse en la segunda terminal más importante del país) está despertando el interés de cámaras de turismo regionales por lograr llevar estos aeródromos al próximo nivel.

La esperanza del gremio turístico del país es que algunos de estos aeródromos se conviertan en aeropuertos ejecutivos y a largo plazo en aeropuertos internacionales.

Actualmente todos los aeródromos nacionales del país: Tamarindo, Samara, Nosara, Punta Islita, Arena/La Fortuna, Tambor, Quepos/Manuel Antonio, Palmar Sur, Golfito, Puerto Jimenez, Bahía Drake, Barra del Colorado, Tortuguero y Limón solo pueden recibir

several names like Llano Grande and Tomas Guardia before becoming the country’s second most important airport, has awaken the interest of the local chambers of tourism that hope some of this terminals could be developed and taken to the next level. At the moment all the domestic airstrips in Costa Rica Tamarindo, Samara, Nosara, Punta Islita, Arena/La Fortuna, Tambor, Quepos/Manuel Antonio, Palmar Sur, Golfito, Puerto Jimenez, Drake Bay, Barra del Colorado, Tortuguero and Limon can only be serviced by the Cessna Grand Caravans and the DHC-6-300 Twin Otter (both airliners used by SANSA and Nature Air). But bigger airplanes like Avianca’s ATR-42 that is used domestically in Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua can’t operate to any of these airports, except Limon. The tourism industry in the country hopes these terminals could develop into Executive Airports and in the long term to International Airports.

Avianca Announces direct flight between Guatemala and Colombia Avianca ha anunciado que pondrá en marcha un vuelo directo con una frecuencia de cuatro veces por semana entre Guatemala y Colombia, a partir del 1 de noviembre próximo, lo cual representará una inversión de cuatro millones de dólares para la aerolínea.

El nuevo vuelo también permitirá agilizar las conexiones de la empresa de origen colombiano con otros destinos de Sudamérica y Europa, e incrementará el tráfico de pasajeros que cada semana utilizan los 176 vuelos ofrecidos desde Guatemala.

La frecuencia del vuelo GuatemalaColombia será de cuatro veces por semana, pero conforme vaya madurando la ruta, esta podría extenderse a todos los días.

l turismo ha tenido un crecimiento muy significativo en Panamá, convirtiéndose en una actividad socioeconómica que gira alrededor de actividades específicas como la diversión, playas, recreación, compras, turismo residencial, turismo de salud, turismo ecológico.

El país ha sido dividido en 10 zonas turísticas cada una de ellas brindan distintas características a los turistas, esta edición vamos a conocer un poco de la zona 1 que abarca las regiones de : l Provincia de Bocas del Toro l Provincia de Chiriquí l Comarca Ngäbe Bugle

Provincia de Bocas del Toro

El archipiélago de Bocas del Toro está formado por nueve islas, 52 cayos y unos 200 islotes. La isla más grande y más desarrollada es Isla Colón, donde se encuentra la capital de la provincia; la ciudad de Bocas del Toro. Hay un gran número de hoteles, restaurantes, instalaciones para el ecoturismo y otras aventuras. Bocas del Toro ofrece playas de arena blanca en el lado caribeño, viajes en barco por el lado de la laguna protegida, y en todas partes oportunidades para nadar, para hacer snorkeling, bucear y tomar el sol. En la Isla Colón los turoperadores le ofrecen el equipo y guías para practicar

el Buceo en forma segura. Aquí el buceo se puede practicar en cualquier época de año. Los principales medios de transporte entre la ciudad de Panamá y Bocas del Toro son los vuelos diarios de la línea aérea regional y por tierra desde la central de transporte de Albrook. En el área de Bocas del Toro se practica la observación de aves, piragüismo y la pesca en aguas del río Teribe. En este espacio habitan diversas comunidades indígenas, como el grupo Teribe. Bocas del Toro es uno de los destinos más populares del país, en el que se respira el ambiente Afroantillano típico del Caribe. En el día se disfrutan las actividades marinas y las noches se consagran a la música y la diversión.

Provincia de Chiriquí

n la parte norte del país, en Chiriquí y tras una emocionante caminata de ascenso es posible contemplar desde los 3.500 mts de altura del Volcán Barú, los dos océanos que bañan Panamá (El Mar Caribe y el Océano Pacífico). En las Tierras Altas hay cafetales, campos de hortalizas y paisajes extraordinarios, goza de una agradable temperatura aproximada de 20 grados centígrados, debido a su altura y puede llegar a descender hasta los 0 grados centígrados. En el sector de la provincia de Chiriquí se encuentran senderos de recorrido corto, como La Cascada y El Retoño, a más de 2.000 metros de altura, ideales para la observación de aves, como el Quetzal resplandeciente, ave mitológica de exuberante belleza por su plumaje rojo y verde, y otras especies de fauna y flora. En el Parque Nacional Volcán Barú, se pueden encontrar para disfrutar de más de 220 especies de animales, entre ellos el Quetzal Resplandeciente. Hay visitas guiadas especiales para el avistamiento de aves y quienes estén interesados en la emblemática ave Quetzal. También es posible practicar senderismo por el Sendero de los Quetzales. El Parque Natural La Amistad hasta las selvas de Boquete y Volcán, hay multitud de lugares para visitar y realizar actividades de turismo activo. Otro atractivo en esta zona es la práctica del River Rafting, algunos de los ríos donde se puede practicar son el: Sereno, Estí, Majagua y Chiriquí Viejo. Los ríos donde se practica el river rafting son dividen en grados de dificultad que van desde los tranquilos grados I y II, los emocionantes grados III y IV, el muy difícil grado V y el rápido casi imposible grado VI.

Ngäbe-Buglé

Ngäbe-Buglé es una comarca indígena de la República de Panamá. Fue creada en 1997 a partir de tierras de Bocas del Toro, Chiriquí y Veraguas. Su cabecera es Llano Tugrí (Buabidí). La comarca está habitada por la etnia Ngäbe y Buglé; su área es de 6,968 km2. El grupo indígena Buglé habita el mismo territorio comarcal de la etnia Ngäbe, por lo que usualmente se habla de los Ngäbe-Buglé. Sin embargo son

dos grupos distintos que hablan lenguas diferentes. Menos numerosos que sus vecinos, sus pequeños poblados se encuentran ubicados principalmente en las tierras situadas al sur de la comarca. Según las historias que se han transmitido oralmente a lo largo de generaciones, los antepasados de los Buglé llegaron a esas tierras cuando los hombres aún tenían alas para volar. Se supone que su lengua proviene del grupo pre-colombino Bogotá o Bokotá, pero su origen histórico permanece en el misterio. Se encuentra ubicada en la región occidental de Panamá. La comarca es atravesada de Oeste a Este por la Cordillera Central o Serranía de Tabasará, que separa dos regiones geográficas, la Región Caribeña, que está cubierta en un 40% de bosque primario y donde los ríos son cortos y caudalosos, y la Región Pacífica, muy deforestada y con ríos de mayor recorrido hacia el mar.

La comunidad indígena Ngäbe-Buglé, es la etnia mayoritaria del país, se dedica básicamente a la actividad en las plantaciones de cacao y banano, así como a la recolección y producción de café orgánico. Actualmente por medio de la Cooperativa de Servicios Múltiples Cacao Bocatoreña (COCABO); produce y comercializa cacao orgánico, con parcelas de producción, ubicadas parcialmente dentro de la Comarca Ngäbe Buglé por lo que están exportando a países de Europa así como a Costa Rica y Brasil. En la actualidad, la superficie total sembrada de cacao asciende a 5,500 hectáreas y están en manos de al menos 3 mil 500 productores ubicados en 80% en la comarca. Las danzas tradicionales y costumbres del pueblo Ngäbe Buglé, tan arraigadas al diario convivir con los elementos de la naturaleza, son un homenaje a la preservación de especies animales, bosques y ríos que muchas veces están en peligro de extinción.

Discovering PANAMA TOURISTIC ZONE 1

ChiriquĂ Province

n ChiriquĂ, in the northern part of the country, after a thrilling climb up Baru Volcano and at an altitude of 3,500 meters, it is possible to view the two oceans that bathe Panama: the Atlantic and Pacific. In the Highlands there are coffee plantations, vegetable fields and extraordinary landscapes. Baru Volcano National Park enjoys a pleasant temperature of around 20 degrees Celsius, because of the elevation, but it can drop down to 0 degrees Celsius. Bird watchers know to seek out the mountains of the province of Chiriqui. From the La Amistad International Park to the forests in Boquete and Volcan, there are plenty of places to visit and participate in active tourism activities. More than 220 species of animals can be spotted in the Baru Volcano National Park, including the Resplendent Quetzal. Special guided tours are offered to bird watchers and those interested in the Quetzal, an emblematic bird. You can also go hiking on the Trail of the Quetzals. Another attraction in this area is the practice of River Rafting, some good rivers are: Sereno, Majagua, Esti and Chiriqui Viejo. The rivers for rafting are evaluated in degrees of difficulty ranging from quiet grades I and II, to the exciting grades III and IV, the very hard grade V and the almost impossible rapid grade VI.

Ngäbe-Buglé

Ngäbe-Bugle is an indigenous territory in the Republic of Panama. It was created in 1997 from land in Bocas del Toro, Chiriqui and Veraguas. Its capital is Llano Tugri (Buabidi). The region is inhabited by the Ngäbe and Bugle ethnic group. Its area is 6,968 km2. The Indian Bugle group, is also related to the group Bokota, with whom they share the buglere language, inhabits the same territory corresponding to the Ngäbe ethnic group, therefore they are usually referred to as “the NgäbeBugle.” However culturally there are two different groups, who speak different language. Less numerous than their neighbors, their small villages have difficult access and the majority thereof is located in the territories south from the villages, which, according

to the bugle legend, their ancestors arrived when they still had wings to fly. Although their language allegedly originates in the pre Colombian group Bogotá or Bokota, their historic origin remains a mystery. It is located in western Panama, and is crossed from west to east by the Central Range, which separates it into two geographic regions. The Atlantic or Caribbean region is 40% covered by primary forest and the rivers are short but large. The Pacific region is heavily deforested and most of the rivers drain into the sea. The Ngäbe-Buglé indigenous community, is the majority ethnic group in the country, it is basically dedicated to the activity of the cocoa, banana plantations and the collection and

production of organic coffee. Currently through the Multiple Bocatoreña Cocoa Services Cooperative (COCABO); they produce and market organic cocoa in production plots, located partially within the Comarca Ngäbe Bugle which are exporting to European countries as well as Costa Rica and Brazil. At present, the total area sown with cocoa amounts to 5 500 hectares and it is worked by at least 3 500 producers located in 80% in the region. Traditional dances and customs of the Ngäbe Bugle people, deeply rooted in the daily coexistence with elements of nature, are a tribute to the preservation of animal species, forests and rivers that are often in danger of extinction.

l Río Tárcoles se viste de gala a diario con la llegada de Jason Vargas a sus aguas en busca de los grandes reptiles que alimenta en su ya famoso show nacional e internacional “El Tour de Cocodrilos”

Debo saber dónde piso una vez que salgo del bote, solo me concentro y trato de hacer mi trabajo, esto es importante ya que por kilómetro lineal tenemos como dato que habitan un promedio de 30 cocodrilos, nos explica Jason.

En esta ocasión preparo mi equipo y me dirijo al Río Grande de Tárcoles localizado en el Pacífico Central de Costa Rica, este se origina en las laderas al Sur de la cordillera volcánica central y fluye en dirección suroeste hacia el golfo de Nicoya y es hábitat del gran Cocodrilo Americano, extensión y poder en sus aguas hacen que desde mi llegada me sienta impresionado y me advierte que pronto la aventura dará inicio.

¡Un momento! hemos divisado algo en el agua, nos dirigimos a una de las orillas y Jason toma un pedazo de pollo con el cual salta fuera del bote y con el agua hasta sus tobillos realiza pequeños golpes contra el agua con su carnada para atraer al animal, a tan sólo 5 metros de distancia aparecen unos ojos, estamos listos, hora del show, todos en silencio ya que se acerca, un momento ¡desapareció! ¿cómo saber dónde saldrá? Es una pregunta que hace que tu corazón se acelere, allí esta de nuevo a tan sólo un metro de nuestro amigo, poco a poco Jason retrocede y comienza a atraer con su carnada al enorme cocodrilo que se deja ver fuera del agua, es increíble su nombre es Osama, así le han llamado y mide casi los 6 metros de largo, Jason levanta su brazo para que el tome su carnada y de pronto en una explosión de fuerza y velocidad vuelve al agua.

Todo listo y preparado, cámara en mano, lentes disponibles y damos comienzo a nuestra travesía, mientras recorremos el río Jason me comenta que alimentó por primera vez a un cocodrilo a los 17 años de edad, ahora a sus 35 años nos cuenta que no siente miedo, pero si un gran respeto por la rapidez, fuerza y destreza de estos animales que llegan a medir hasta 6 metros en algunas zonas del río.

Según los estudios se estima que en los últimos 30 a 35 kilómetros del río Grande de Tárcoles existe una población de cocodrilos americanos de más de 2000 ejemplares. No lo puedo creer, he logrado fotografías de impacto, tan solo en pocos minutos todo se vuelve algo nunca antes visto, el ver enormes reptiles en su hábitat natural es una experiencia única, esta misma experiencia hace que las comunicadoras, productoras e importantes marcas tales como National Geographic, BBC y Discovery Channel hayan decidido venir y visitarle para ver su trabajo y documentar su desenvolvimiento como pocos en el mundo lo han realizado Jason Vargas Agüero copropietario junto con su hermano Diego Vargas del “Crocodile Man Tour, se siente orgulloso del crecimiento que como persona y profesional ha tenido a lo largo de estos años, ejemplo de dedicación y esfuerzo hoy habla 3 idiomas, ha sido colaborador en importantes documentales e invitado a algunos otros fuera de nuestras fronteras.

he Tarcoles river shines every day when Jason Vargas gets into its waters in search of large reptiles to feed in his national and internationally famous show “Crocodile Man Tour” This time I prepared my equipment and went to the “Rio Grande Tarcoles” located in the Central Pacific of Costa Rica, it rises in the south slopes of the central mountain range and flows southwest towards the Nicoya Gulf and is the habitat of the great American crocodile. The size and power of the river make me feel impresses me and warns me that adventure will soon begin. Everything is ready and prepared, the camera is in my hand and lenses available to start the journey. While we are sailing the river Jason tells me that he fed his first crocodile at the age of 17, now he is 35-year-old; he tells us that he does not feel fear, but he feels a great respect for the speed, strength and skills of these animals that measure up to 6 metres in some areas of the river.

rovincia generosa y cálida, Guanacaste es conocida por su producción ganadera y espectaculares playas. Es la región más seca de Costa Rica, especialmente en sus zonas costeras. Guanacaste pasó a formar parte de Costa Rica en 1824, hasta entonces permaneció como un partido adscrito a la Capitanía General de Guatemala. Ciertamente este territorio detenta una riqueza natural y cultural muy importante para la economía de Costa Rica. Algunos de los mejores hoteles de playa del mundo se sitúan en las playas guanacastecas. Guanacaste es bien conocida por sus playas y el sol, y eso es exactamente lo que los visitantes encuentran a lo largo de la línea costera, donde abundan los hoteles, cabinas y restaurantes; algunos lujosos, otros más modestos, pero que le garantizan al visitante una opción perfecta para cada presupuesto. PESCA DEPORTIVA

Guanacaste cuenta con algunas de las playas más bellas para disfrutar de este deporte como lo son Playas del Coco y Ocotal que se ubican a 30 minutos del Aeropuerto Internacional de Liberia; Tamarindo, Sámara, Carrillo y Flamingo que están aproximadamente a una hora y media de dicho aeropuerto. Además hay pistas de aterrizaje para vuelos locales en Tamarindo, Nosara y Carrillo. En Bahía Culebra, Papagayo, se encuentra la Marina Papagayo para 118 embarcaciones en su primera etapa. Entre las especies que es común encontrar en esta área están: el marlin gigante, pez vela, dorado, aguja azul y negra y atún entre otros. Temporadas: - Marlin: Todo el año. Tope: Noviembre a Marzo - Pez Vela: Todo el año. Tope: Marzo a Agosto. - Atún: Todo el año. Tope: Agosto a Octubre. - Dorado: Finales de Mayo a Octubre - Pez Gallo: Todo el año. Tope: Noviembre a Marzo. - Wahoo: Mayo a Agosto.

BUCEO

A sólo 30 minutos del Aeropuerto Internacional Daniel Oduber, en Liberia, se encuentra una gran concentración de operadores de buceo en Playa Hermosa, Playas del Coco y Playa Ocotal. Otros lugares como Isla Bolaños e Isla Negritos también ofrecen condiciones para bucear y admirar una gran diversidad marina y se ubican aproximadamente a una hora 45 minutos de este aeropuerto. Otros puntos a visitar, sobre todo para principiantes son Bahía Santa Elena, Fila Playa Blanca y Bajo Meros. Los meses de marzo a noviembre son ideales para visitar las aguas de Punta Gorda, Bajo Tiburones, Isla Negritos, Isla Cabros e Islas Murciélago, en donde podrá encontrar en su hábitat natural a los tiburones toro (Carcharhinus leucas). Junto a las anteriores, Isla Despensa e Islas Catalinas conforman un excelente sitio para admirar una gran cantidad de vida submarina que es difícil de encontrar en otros lugares.

WINDSURF

El viento sopla a través de Costa Rica con una fuerza y consistencia increíbles durante los meses de temporada seca, y crean las condiciones óptimas para la práctica del windsurfing en la región noroeste (provincia de Guanacaste). La mejor zona para los surfistas experimentados es Puerto Soley, cerca de la frontera con Nicaragua, mientras que el Golfo de Papagayo es la mejor área para los menos experimentados, debido a sus aguas más calmas y vientos con menos intensidad. Se puede alquilar el equipo básico para la práctica de este deporte en muchos de los hoteles de playa del área de Papagayo.

SURF

En la provincia de Guanacaste, se encuentran tres de las mejores playas para la práctica del surf. Una de ellas es Potrero Grande (Ollie’s Point), la cual ofrece excelentes olas y vientos para realizar este deporte. Para llegar se debe tomar un bote desde Playas del Coco (a 35 km. de Liberia). Este lugar carece de servicios por lo que se debe llevar agua y comida.

Los manglares que protege este Parque Nacional, se encuentran dentro de la Convención RAMSAR sobre los Humedales, los cuales son de gran relevancia como hábitat de aves acuáticas y áreas de reproducción de diferentes especies marinas y forestales. Su importancia desde el punto de vista de conservación y el atractivo turístico principal, radican en el anidamiento de tortugas baula en las playas de estas áreas protegidas. La baula, es la especie de tortuga más grande del mundo y según la Convención para el Comercio Internacional de Especies Amenazadas de Flora y Fauna (CITES) se encuentra en peligro de extinción. TURISMO RURAL En lo que respecta al turismo rural, las actividades y servicios que se ofrecen son los siguientes y se localizan en las correspondientes áreas geográficas del Pacífico Norte: Ecoturismo Bolsón localizado en la comunidad de Bolsón se caracteriza por brindar una serie de servicios de alojamiento en casas de Ortega y Bolsón, son familias preparadas para la recepción de los turistas. Actividades: Recorridos por el río Tempisque y Parque Nacional Palo Verde para la observación de cocodrilos, aves y monos entre otros.

La playa del refugio tiene una longitud aproximada de 12 Km. y dentro del refugio se encuentra el pueblo de Ostional. La anidación de las tortugas marinas en grandes cantidades fue la razón para establecer el refugio de vida silvestre; esta anidación masiva o arribada como se le conoce, se da entre los sitios conocidos como La Roca, Las Cocineras y el Estero Ostional.

Localizada en Santa Bárbara de Santa Cruz, contiguo al Colegio, Casa del Sol es un proyecto que impulsa la utilización de la energía solar.

Las tortugas que anidan en este refugio de vida silvestre son: la tortuga lora, que anida durante todo el año, la tortuga baula que es la de mayor tamaño en el mundo, la tortuga verde que anida de setiembre a febrero y la tortuga carey que anida solamente en forma ocasional en este refugio.

Principalmente en las áreas protegidas se puede realizar la observación de aves, Palo Verde, Curú, Isla Bolaños y Tenorio son de los más importantes aunque existen otros sitios que permiten del disfrute de la actividad.

Actividades: Se puede degustar comida preparada con la energía del sol.

The months of March through November are ideal to visit the waters of Punta Gorda, Bajo Tiburones, Negritos Island, Cabros Island and Isla Bat Island, where the Bull Sharks (Carcharhinus leucas) can be found in their natural habitat. Along with the above, Despensa Island and Catalinas Island make up an excellent site to admire a lot of underwater life that is difficult to find in other places.

WINDSURF

The Trade winds blow across Costa Rica with incredible force and consistency during the dry months, creating windsurfing conditions in the country’s northwest corner. The best area for experienced surfers is Port Soley, near the border with Nicaragua, but the Gulf of Papagayo is a better area for less experienced surfers, since it features calm waters and less intense wind.Basic equipment can be rented at some of the beach resorts in the Papagayo area.

SURF

At the Guanacaste province there are three major beaches for surfing. One of them is Potrero Grande, which offers excellent waves and wind conditions for this type of sport.

SPORT FISHING

Guanacaste has some of the most beautiful beaches to enjoy this sport such as Coco Beach and Ocotal, those are located 30 minutes from the international airport of Liberia; another ones are Tamarindo, Samara, Carrillo and Flamingo which are approximately an hour and a half from the airport. In addition there are runways for local flights in Tamarindo, Nosara, Carrillo. In Bahía Culebra, Papagayo is located the Marina Papagayo for 118 boats in its first stage. Among the species that are commonly found in this area are the giant marlin, sailfish, Mahi Mahi, blue and black marlin and tuna among others. Seasons: Marlin: Throughout the year. DIVING

To get there, you must take a boat from the Coco beaches (21miles or 35 km from Liberia). This area lacks services so you must bring your own food and water. There is also Negra Beach, which has hotels, cabins, and camping areas, as well as restaurants and bars. You can get there by arriving from the northeast, crossing La Amistad Bridge over the Tempisque River. It is also recommended to use a four-wheel drive vehicle.

Only 30 minutes from the Daniel Oduber international airport in Liberia, a large concentration of dive operators are located in Playa Hermosa, Playas del Coco and Ocotal. Other places such as Bolaños Island and Negritos Island also offer conditions for diving and admire a great marine diversity and are located approximately one hour 45 minutes from this airport.

Another important sector is Witch’s Rock, located in the Santa Rosa National Park. Its fast waves with perfect tubes make it one of the favorites; however, keep in mind that toward the Naranjo River there might be crocodiles. It is accessible by land or sea; if going by land, a four-wheel drive must be used due to road conditions.

Other points to visit, especially for beginners are: Santa Elena Bay, Fila Playa Blanca and Bajo Meros.

Other beaches recommended for this sport are: Naranjo Beach, Grande Beach, Tamarindo, Langosta Beach, Avellanas, Junquillal, and Nosara.

TURTLE NESTING

- OSTIONAL NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

The refuge’s beach measures about 7.5 miles long. You may also find the town of Ostional located inside the refuge. The area was established as a wildlife refuge because the sea turtles lay their eggs there. This massive nesting, or “arribada” (arrival), as it is known, is located between La Roca, Las Cocineras, and the Ostional marsh. The sea turtles that may be found in this wildlife refuge are: the Olive Ridley Turtle, which nests all year round, the Leatherback Turtle, which is the largest in the world, the Green Turtle, which nests between September and February, and the Hawksbill Turtle, which only nests occasionally in this refuge.

- LAS BAULAS NATIONAL MARINE PARK

The mangroves that protect this national park are found within the RAMSAR Convention on Wetlands. They are extremely important to the aquatic bird habitat and reproduction areas for various marine and forest species. Its importance, from a conservation and tourism point of view, is the Leatherback turtle that nests on its beaches. The Leatherback turtle is the biggest of its kind in the world and, according to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), it is also endangered.

BIRD WATCHING

Bird watching is mainly in the protected areas like Palo Verde, Curú, Bolaños Island, and Tenorio. These are the most important, but there are other sites where you can enjoy this activity.

La Ruta Colonial y de los Volcanes

a Ruta Colonial y de los Volcanes es un itinerario turístico creado por el Sistema de Integración Centroamericana (SICA) con apoyo de la Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional (AECI) para el disfrute de la diversidad cultural que encierran las ciudades y pueblos coloniales centroamericanos. La Ruta sigue los pasos de los antiguos senderos indígenas que cruzaban Centroamérica y que los españoles convirtieron en el denominado Camino Real, una compleja red de rutas terrestres, marítimas y fluviales que unía sus dominios

a lo largo del mundo. El Camino Real se recorría a pie, a lomo de mula o a caballo, ocasionalmente en andas (tratándose de gente principal) y a veces en hamaca, curioso método prehispánico que permitía al viajero importante instalarse cómodamente en ese genial invento. Las jornadas estaban calculadas para pernoctar en sitios con las facilidades necesarias de alojamiento y alimentación para las personas y sus bestias. La Ruta tiene una composición flexible y se comercializa a partir de su estructura básica, aunque presenta extensiones que se adaptan al gusto de la demanda. Está pensada tanto

para aquellos viajeros que quieren disfrutar de un paquete multidestino de dos semanas como para los que quieren tomarse su tiempo y descubrir la ruta como viajeros de antaño saboreando cada kilómetro. Las grandes puertas principales de la ruta son la Antigua Guatemala y Panamá y durante el recorrido el viajero podrá descubrir ciudades y pueblos coloniales como Panamá, Cartago, Liberia, Granada, León, Comayagua, Gracias, Colosuca, Santa Rosa de Copán, Suchitoto y La Antigua Guatemala.

La ruta ofrece la posibilidad de acercarse al volcán Masaya, en Nicaragua, uno de los pocos volcanes en activo del mundo al que se puede acceder en vehículo prácticamente hasta el cráter (foto superior). O al volcán Tajumulco, el más alto de Centroamérica, en Guatemala, con 4420 metros de altura. Los volcanes se extienden paralelamente a la costa del Pacífico en una extensión de 1.000 km. de largo creando un paisaje único dotado de distintos tipos de conos volcánicos levantados por las erupciones de lava, coladas volcánicas, cenizas, así como lagos formados en las calderas. El vulcanismo en Centroamérica está acompañado también por fenómenos asociados como fumarolas, lagos sulfurosos y surgencias de aguas termales. Así, por ejemplo, en las laderas del volcán Rincón de la Vieja y en el volcán Santa Clara pueden observarse fuentes de lodo hirvientes, fumarolas, y pequeños ríos termales. La mayor parte de volcanes ofrecen actividades como el kayaking, el canopy, el mountain bike, la equitación o el senderismo. Todas ellas están reguladas ya que forman parte de espacios naturales protegidos integrados en el Corredor Biológico Mesoamericano. Destacan también actividades asociadas a observación de diferentes especies vegetales y animales, varias de ellas endémicas de la región. Sin duda, una de las actividades más atractivas es la de observación de aves, dado el gran número de aves migratorias que atraviesan el istmo, así como las que son autóctonas, como los quetzales, los tucanes, águilas arpías y diferentes especies de loros. Otras especies animales que pueden destacarse son los felinos, que incluyen jaguares, pumas y ocelotes así como otros mamíferos tales como diversos tipos de simios, los osos hormigueros o los agutíes. De igual forma, varias son las especies de anfibios y reptiles que podemos encontrar en los paisajes volcánicos, como la famosa serpiente coral.

The Colonial and Volcanoes Route

he Colonial and Volcanoes Route is a tourist route created by the Central American Integration System (SICA) with support of the Spanish Agency of International Cooperation (AECID) to show the cultural diversity of the Central American colonial people. The route follows the ancient indigenous trail that crossed Central America and used by the Spanish. Called the Royal Route by the Spanish; a complex land, sea and river network that joined its domains throughout

the world. El Camino Real was toured on foot, by mule, by horseback and occasionally carried on platforms (for important people) and sometimes in hammocks, a pre-Hispanic method that allows to the important traveller to settle comfortably into this great invention. The days were planned so that stays could be made in places with accommodations and food for people and their animals. The route has a flexible plan and is marketed from its base structure, although there are extensions available

to meet demand. It is intended for those travellers who want to enjoy a two week multi-destination package and for those who want to take their time to discover the route as yesteryear travellers, enjoying every mile. The principal starting points of the route are Antigua Guatemala and Panama and during the trip the traveller will discover villages and the colonial towns as Panama, Cartago, Liberia, Granada, Leon, Comayagua, Gracias, Colosuca, Santa Rosa de Copรกn, Suchitoto and La Antigua Guatemala.

he possible eruption of one of the volcanoes is a potential spectacle if nature allows it. The route offers the possibility of reaching the crater of the Masaya Volcano in Nicaragua, one of the few active volcanoes in the world that can be accessed by vehicle. Another is the Tajumulco Volcan in Guatemala (4420m), the highest in Central America, in Guatemala. The Volcanoes form a 1,000 km line parallel to the Pacific ocean creating a unique landscapes with different types of volcanic cones, created by lava eruptions, volcanic lava, ash, as well as lakes formed in the calderas. Volcanoes in Central America are also accompanied by a phenomenon known as fumaroles, sulphurous lakes and thermal water springs heated by the volcano and released to the surface. For example, there are boiling mudfumaroles and hot springs on the slopes of the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano and Santa Clara Volcanoes.

The volcanoes area offers a wide of activities such as kayaking, canopy, mountain bike, horseback riding or hiking. All of them are protected as natural spaces in the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor. They also include activities associated with observation of different plant and animal species, many of them endemic to the region. Without a doubt, one of the most attractive activities is birdwatching, especially with the large number of migratory birds that cross the isthmus; as well as those who are native, including the quetzals, toucans, harpies eagles and different species of parrots. Other animal species that can be highlighted are cats, including jaguars, pumas and ocelots and other mammals such as different types of monkeys, anteaters or agoutis. Similarly, there are several species of amphibians and reptiles that can be found in the volcanic landscapes, such as the famous coral snake.
