It goes without saying that school exchanges offer students the chance to get involved in a different way of life and to become more mature and responsible. Besides, these trips can be regarded as a great option to improve their language skills spending time in another country.

From September, our school has had the opportunity of getting to know some students from different regions of Canada. In this article, Alexia, one of these students, will tell us all about her and her stay in our city. This 18year-old girl is spending 10 months in Spain before going to university to study Commerce and Aviation thanks to the Rotary Club.

THE WORLD OF ART

We should highlight the fact that Alexia has become an active member in our school community as she is currently volunteering as an English language assistant. Needless to say, we really appreciate her eagerness to help and to show us all the upsides of taking part in an exchange. Moreover, she is great at playing football and she devotes her time to getting involved in projects to make the world a better place. So, obviously, this article is worth reading as we will learn a lot from her.

THE MIDDLE AGES AND ITS DISEASES In the Middle Ages, the diseases were considered as a proof sent by God to the individuals, and their sufferings brought them closer to the passion of Christ on the Cross. But also illnesses were understood as a punishment from God, a penance for the sins committed, identifying the patient with an impure sinner.

As a result, nobody wanted to live with the sick, who in addition to their illnesses suffered from social marginalization.

One of the most damaging illness was the Black Death, that caused such a big outbreak that there were hardly any people alive to bury the dead.

It was a disease which took place in Europe during the 14th century and was spreaded by the fleas carried by rodents.

It could be got from someone to others by bites of infected beings or by people who was in contact with affected animals. They started having high temperature and strong chills. They also had sensation of debility, headache, vomits...

Leprosy or Hansen Disease is an infectious illness produced by the Mycobacterium leprae.

The sick were separated from the rest of the population, as far as it was proved that a person had Leprosy.

Then they organised a Death March: their family accompanied them in a procession to the leprosery, the place where the sufferers were locked up and lost all their rights.

The symptoms were the lack of the eyebrows, bulging eyes, bruised colour on the face, nodules in the ears and hoarsely.

In Italy, they thought that this illness was produced by the bite of a tarantula and they tried to cure it with music and dancing the tarantella.

The illness was called like this because they invoked Saint Vitus to deliver them from the strange disease.

The main symptoms were the appearance of involuntary, fast, messy, wide-ranging and purposeless movements. They could affect to any muscular region.

Sydenham recognized it as a mental and nervous illness in the 18th century.

In that time, illnesses such as colds could be mortal because of the lack of hygiene and the very little development of medical care. Sick people were treated in hospitals, built close to the monasteries, to fulfil the Christian mandate of being welcoming and charitable. There, they took care of homeless, pilgrims and sick people, that were threatened by several illnesses. The most harmful diseases in the Middle Ages were the following ones:

PORTUGAL In this country, table manners differ a bit from ours.

Eating your food slowly means that you don´t like it, that you aren´t enjoying it. So, remember, shovel food in your mouth like a bear next time you are the guests of some Portuguese family!

HAITI People are not allowed to whistle in public spaces, such as the underground or in the street, as they consider it is bad manners as well as unkind. However, in our country, it could be regarded as a symbol of happiness.

CZECH REPUBLIC It ´s customary that men beat women gently with a stick, which they believe brings fertility. This “strange” tradition takes place on Easter Monday. Maybe, it´s not the way to treat women, don´t you think so?

RUSSIA If you are invited for lunch or dinner to a Russian home, you must be careful about the number of flowers you are giving as a present. Even numbers are associated with death and odd numbers are seen as a sign of respect. How tiring to count flowers!

SOUTH KOREA People avoid using red ink (something very common among teachers to mark our mistakes!). Based on history and customs, red ink was used to write down names of dead people. They consider it will give you bad luck.

EGYPT People only use their right hand to take and give something to another person since they associate their left hand with dirtiness. It is a lack of respect to use it.

How awkward to be thinking about which hand to use!

BRAZIL Do you want to live forever with someone? Do you love your mum so mum that you need to stay with her until the end of your life? Don´t worry, Brazilians have the solution. In some tribes, they eat their relatives’ ´ashes when they die. Do you find it disgusting? Yes, it is obviously, but mix it with chocolate and the taste will improve a lot.

JAPAN When someone bows, the other person has to respond with another bow. But if the first person decides to bow more than once, you have to do it as many times as the first person. If you don´t, it means that you aren´t interested in having a conversation with that person. (Funny?)

JORDAN You shouldn´t refuse to have coffee in this country as you are “obliged” to drink it. When you have already had it, if you don´t want more, you have to move your coffee cup from one side to the other. So, keep this in mind if you don´t want to stay all night awake!

INDIA Baby tossing ritual is common in some parts of India where priests threw babies from 15 metres and they are caught in a bed sheet.

Villagers believe that the ritual brings the child long life and good luck. A bit scary, isn´t it?

NEPAL Nepal monks shave all the hair from their bodies to erase all the impurities from previous lives. This process of cleanness includes eyebrows and eyelashes. Don´t be horrified, imagine monks wearing toupee! It would be to split our sides laughing!

BIRMANIA Women wear necklaces to have longer necks as men find them more attractive, but, what about comfort?

This tradition is coming to an end and it is something that calls tourists ´attraction.

THAILAND You are not allowed to touch a person´s head as it is considered a sacred part of their bodies. Thinking about it in a funny way, it might be justified as we keep our brain and thoughts in our head!

ANOTHER WAY OF DOING SPORT It goes without saying that sport is necessary for our physical and mental health.

Despite that fact, most teenagers refuse doing sports because of two main reasons: either they don’t have enough time or by when they have finished doing their homework they’re very tired.

Well, if we think of sport as a hard physical activity, it doesn’t sound appealing at all. But, what if there was another option?

In this article we are going to introduce three types of sports that you can do while sitting on a chair, or more specifically, in a wheelchair.

Wheelchair Basketball This sport was created in 1940 in England in a rehab program in which they adapted some sports for wheelchairs. In 1946 the first matches were held in the United States and since then they have spread throughout the world.

This sport is practiced by people with a physical disability. The rules of basketball have been adapted to this modality, taking into account different disability levels: 1 to 4,5. It has become one of the most important sports in the Paralympic games. This sport is practiced by boys and girls of all ages. There are 5 people in each team, who play in a court which is 15 metres wide by 28 metres long.

Every match is divided into four parts of 10 minutes each part.

Wheelchair Rugby It is one of the most interesting Paralympic sports. It was created in 1977, in Canada, by a group of disabled basketball players searching for an alternative to wheelchair basketball, and thus creating a different team sport. However, it did not become an Olympic sport until Sidney 2000.

This sport mixes characteristics and rules of handball, volleyball or even ice hockey.

The rules to play are really basic and it’s played indoors.

The contact between chairs is allowed, but contact between players is sanctioned.

The ball is round and not very heavy. Though it is a bit different from the general sport, it keeps the real feeling.

The teams are mixed, which means that men and women play together, and they play in 7 different divisions depending on the players’ disability grade. The number of players by team is always four. Two

players attack with wheelchairs that have more protections to face the defenders, and the two defenders play with more equipped wheelchairs to try to slow down

rival attackers.

Wheelchair tennis We have different types of adapted tennis, but one of the most popular is wheelchair tennis. The size of the court, net height and rackets are the same, but there are two major differences: • Athletes use specially designed wheelchairs.

• The ball may bounce up to two times, where the second bounce may also occur outside the court.

Wheelchair tennis is played at Grand Slams, and is one of

the sports contested at the Summer Paralympics. There are three categories: Men, Women, and Quads. Each category has singles and doubles tournaments. The Quad, the newest division, is for players that have substantial loss of function in at least one upper limb. Quad players often tape the rackets to their hand to compensate for loss of function, and some players are allowed to use electricpowered wheelchairs.

Wheelchair tennis increased in popularity in 1976. In 1982 France became the first country in Europe to include a wheelchair tennis program.

Since then, much effort has been made to promote the sport at elite-level.

To sum up, we have run out of excuses, as you can see.

It´s worth a try until you find the sport you like. You can turn your inaction into a great opportunity to take up a new activity and give visibility to disabled sports.

ECO-GUILT OR NOT? Recently climate change seems to be an issue that everybody is talking about and the facts are not positive. Each time, society is more conscious about the global warming and understands the need of acting to avoid it, in order to preserve the world in which we are living.

Kids going on strike is calling the attention of Governments. #FridaysForFuture is becoming viral, thanks to Greta Thunberg, a 15 years old Swedish teenager, who protests all over the world about climate change. She began to demonstrate her annoyance about this matter each Friday in front of the Swedish Parliament and her acts are spreading fast between us, teenagers. She is showing us the importance of being eco-friendly with the environment, although, we continue polluting it.

We all love a juicy gossip although we know it might not be true. Research shows that people who gossip the most have very high levels of anxiety. They are generally not particularly popular because they cannot be trusted.

Jay Beatty (2003) is a supporter and unofficial mascot of Celtic Football Club. He was born with Down syndrome and at the age of 11 he won the Goal of the Month price.

He received worldwide attention thanks to the former Celtic player Giorgios Samaras and became an ambassador for the Celtic F.C. Foundation charity. 97% of the team’s supporters chose Beatty as ambassador.

In July 2013, before a Champions League qualifying match in Belfast against Cliftonville, Beatty was invited to join Celtic on the team bus after training with them all day. He sang the hymn of the team (“Hail Hail the Celts are here”) with the first team players.

On 2014, he was picked up by his favourite player, Samaras, and taken to the pitch in front of more than 50,000 supporters at Celtic Park. Celtic manager Neil Lennon gave Beatty his League Winners medal.

In a new book called Celtic Minded 4, Martin, Jay’s father, also lifts the lid on the vile “online abuse and threats” aimed at the youngster on a daily basis since he became a household name.

Martin writes: “January 2nd 2011 changed everything for Jay and started an obsession that has not faltered.

“It is something that I have never seen before.

“It is an obsession that has taken over our lives: it has changed our lives for better or for worse, unfortunately.

“Celtic took to the field against Rangers at Ibrox and with Rangers favorites to win, up stepped Mr. Samaras who scored two goals and sent my wife and I into complete delirium, with Jay sitting watching on in awe of what he was seeing on TV and what he was witnessing in our living room.

“From that day on Jay’s life changed forever. He had one focus and nothing else mattered in his life bar Celtic Football Club: and I mean it has been relentless morning, noon and night.

“I do not believe I have ever had a conversation with Jay that in some way has not been turned by him into something about Celtic: he lives and breathes it.”

But not everything in this book are beautiful words. Jay’s dad also says: “Internet abuse was something that we were unaware of and never once thought that we would have to deal with.

While so much positivity was going on we started to learn of disgusting comments being made about Jay on social media. This was universally condemned but has continued

on a daily basis ever since.

The abuse, the threats and the language directed at Jay and our family on a near daily basis has been staggering and has had a very adverse effect on our lives. The comments are shocking and disgusting and have sickened hardened police officers who have had to deal with it.”

But, although this is a difficult situation, Martin (Jay’s dad) adds: “The fans are the heartbeat of Celtic FC. They are fans like no other and thanks to the kindness and love of these fans and fans from other clubs it far outweighs the hatred and bile that is thrown at us”, a beautiful message that show us that there’s still good people on this world that is always helping each other’s.

Hola/Hello/Bonjour My name is Alexia Bourgeois; I am an 18-year-old from Dieppe, New-Brunswick, Canada. I am living in Burgos, Spain for the year, currently attending I.E.S. Cardenal López de Mendoza, writing this letter to share more information about myself, my community, and being a Rotary Exchange Student.

Firstly, Canada is the world’s second largest country, having so much nature and actually more lakes than all of the world combined. It has 10 provinces and 3 territories, with a total population of 37 million. It’s an officially bilingual country, and many of our ancestors are mostly from France, England, Scotland and Ireland, when they colonized our 152-year-old country. My native language is French and English mixed together called "Chiac", unique to the Acadian culture, and the east coast of Canada. Our government is a federal parliamentary constitutional monarchy, with our Monarch being the Queen of England, Elizabeth II and our Prime Minister is Justin Trudeau.

My school life in North-America was typical, filled with sports and activities. I was captain of the soccer team, played volleyball and ringette for the school and was on the student council. I additionally started a Rotary Interact committee where students can create projects that make the world a better place. My favorite courses were entrepreneurship, law, accounting, leadership and gym. I also loved to socialize at house parties or hockey games, attended by the whole school. I had more liberty, since in Canada, we can drive at 16 but also more responsibilities as I worked part-time for the past four years.

Thanks to my efforts I won athlete of the year and was the valedictorian at graduation.

I was very fortunate to learn at such a young age how educational travel is. I have traveled in many provinces of Canada, many states of the USA, and a dozen of the Caribbean islands. As my family is part of the Rotary International volunteer organization, I knew about the opportunity of Rotary Youth Exchange and went to France and Spain for one month.

Before going to university, to study Commerce and Aviation as I want to become a pilot, I decided to do the 10-month exchange in Spain. I knew it would help become a more knowledgeable citizen, broaden my cultural perspectives, build lifelong relationships, improve my soccer skills and learn foreign languages to become perfectly trilingual. I volunteer as an English language assistant, helping students impacted me greatly, and has shown me that the teachers at school like miss Ana Cienfuegos as well as my host family, care for me like their own. I get to play soccer for Nuestra Señora de Belén, an amazing learning experience. I also continue my humanitarian work with the local Rotaract (Rotary for 18-30-year old’s) club.

Through my Rotary Youth Exchange, I gained confidence, faced adversity, persevered, matured and grown as a person, all the while enhancing my interest and knowledge to face global issues. All in all, I am thankful for the role that the Rotary has played in my upbringing as volunteering, creating projects and traveling have completely shaped me as a leader, enhanced my communication abilities, and my understanding towards strangers and my new international friends. I could not be more thankful for the once in a lifetime experience to live abroad and for my new ommunity in Burgos, Spain.
