The whole point of speaking a language is to be able to communicate. Currently, English is what in Latin is known as a “lingua Franca,” that is to say, English is a national language in scores of countries across the globe, from Ireland to India, Canada to Australia.

And then there are even more countries where English is used as the second or third language in commerce and in academic communities. In light

of this, our high school chose English as the language for our bilingual project, giving our students access to learning language skills through other subjects, so that their learning is more focused, in-depth and useful.

The program started in 2011 after extensive discussions weighing the pros and cons of various proposals until we finally voted on the one that was

the most suitable for our program of studies.

Parents and students that take part in this project are aware that it involves more hours of English language study in order to improve the students’ understanding and communication skills. By learning English through other subjects, students gain exposure to technical terms and are encouraged to practice their skills in

various educational contexts.

As a Spanish language teacher and life-long student of English and French, I have a sincere belief in the importance of language study. As the head of this school, I have always given my support to this project, defending it from its opponents. A rigorous foreign language program is absolutely essential in today’s educational system and I have no doubt

Comparing Spanish and other countries school system My days at the school in USA Unlike in Spanish schools, many US high school students (3-4 of ESO plus Bach) can leave the school grounds and go home or elsewhere during their free periods.

s c h o o l systems is that in the US, high school students are not assigned to groups with letters like second of ESO B. When US students enter high school, they are taught about the requirements for graduation. In their four years of high school, they have to take three years of social studies, for example, so they could take one of those credits each year for three years (and the fourth year they could take an elective like photography or fencing) or they could take two credits one year and one credit another year.

Students choose their own classes (with help from a counselor if they need it) depending on their interests and on when classes are offered.

Not every class is offered every year. Students do not chose between two tracks (letters and science) the way students do in Spain. They take the classes they need to graduate without belonging to a lettered group. So for example many classes are made up of half first years, many second years, and a few third years. Students still feel part of their graduating class, that is, of the group of first years or second years, but there is no assignment of students to groups with letters.

EDITORIAL The Bilingual Project is a program that tries to spread the learning of the English language to ESO students. It involves teachers and students and also other contributors who have made this project a reality.

During our years in the bilingual program, we have studied many subjects; the subjects we study in English change from year to year so we learn about quite a lot of different things. In the 1st year of ESO we study design, arts and technology. In

the 2nd course, we are taught citizenship and music. We welcome technology and art in the 3rd year of ESO again, but this time the topics are more indepth. And now here we are in the 4th year of ESO, when we face ITC and ethics. The subjects have become more and more interesting. And of course we have had lots of English language lessons throughout these four years.

My experience in a German school

Last year, I studied in a school in Germany. I didn’t like it very much because the teachers were very strict. We called them with their surname. Every day, I got up at 6:00 a.m. to get the train to go to school.

We started at 8:00 a.m. and finished at 4:00 p.m. We had three breaks. At 12:00 p.m. I had lunch at school in the canteen. It was very dirty. We must wear school uniform. I studied different subjects: German, maths, English, dancing, history, geography, sport, arts and crafts and music. I went on two trips. One to the forest and another to a botanical garden. Every day, when I arrived home, I was very tired. It was very different from Spanish schools.

Education in the Australian outback

The Australian outback is one of the most isolated parts of the world.

It is more than 1.5 million square kilometres. People live on farms. Children usually work on the farm and they learn to survive in difficult situations. The cities are separated many kilometres, so children can’t go to school. They don’t attend a traditional school. They have an online school. They study at home with a

computer. The teachers teach the students by satellite and with a webcam. The students see the teacher, but the teacher can’t see the students. They can talk to the teacher and to each other. The teacher asks questions and sees if they are listening. They have to do homework and exams. Sometimes the students go on excursions or meet to do different activities (three or four times a year). The teachers say they are very good students. About 15% of the students are Aborigines.

Ideally, we would be able to extend this program into Bachillerato and create a second group of bilingual students in each of the four years of the ESO but that all depends on the economic and human resources that we have at our disposal. The educational authorities have made it clear that expansion of the program is not possible at this time, in today’s political and economic climate.

One of the many benefits of the bilingual program is that it can encourage interest in the English language throughout the educational community. Another benefit is that it enables students to interact among themselves in a second language. This ability creates new ways of thinking, new pathways in their brains that aid in their intellectual and emotional development.

Foreign language acquisition correlates with crosscultural understanding and the learning of empathy which breaks down the “us” versus “them” mentality that is so harmful in our society today. Language learning helps students become citizens of the world.

music corner Antonio José Martínez Palacios was born in Burgos the 12th of December, 1902. Son of humble family, his father, Rafael Martínez Calvo was a confectioner, and his mother, Angela Palacios Berzosa, was from Ibeas of Juarros.

As a child, he showed an inclination for music. In 1909, still unfulfilled at seven years old, he began his studies in San Lorenzo schools. His first musical steps were with teacher Julián García and José María Blanco Beobide.

In Madrid, he befriended musicians and important cultural figures of the time such as Regino Sainz de la Maza who was also from Burgos, and García Lorca, among others. His

work began to be known and enjoyed a certain prestige.

In 1924 he began the composition of jesters’dances from Burgos.

From 1925 to 1929 he taught at "St. Stanislaus school in Malaga, which allowed him to continue composing. He wrote “Dance from Burgos” in 1927. With Galician Sonata he won another award and continued publishing more works; including "Enactments" in the prestigious Spanish Musical Union. He received a scholarship from the city of Burgos and studied in Paris for two summers (1925 and 1926) Some more prizes “Amaya”.

everybody plays video computer games THE WORLD INSIDE GRAND THEFT AUTO V MORE THAN JUST BLOOD, DRUGS AND SEX Although the Grand Theft Auto franchise is instantly associated to violence and cruelty, if you look deep inside you´ll see that it is incredibly detailed, not only in its graphics but also in its particular depiction of reality, criticizing the vices of western culture and exaggerating the most eccentric human values. In this review, we will analyze both the cultural and technical aspects of one of the most successful videogames ever created.

First of all, let´s talk about its cultural basis. The city of Los Santos and its surrounding natural areas are based on the real Los Angeles in South California. As they did in previous releases, the city is almost a copy of reality but of course reduced in size; almost all the main real locations are found in-game. Creators hav developed an atmosphere of realism that is really appreciated when playing the game. But what would GTA be without its violent and cruel main character? Well this time we have three, each one whit its unique personality, hobbies, friends, family and past.

Franklin is a grown-up gang member living in the outskirts, Michael is a wealthy married and retired bank robber with two children, and finally, Trevor is a psychopath living in the desert who has also had an obscure past. During the game´s events these three characters, which you would like or hate from the

very beginning, get involved in a series of heists throughout the whole state, having to face trouble with many different factions: government´s law forces, gangs, mafias, mercenaries… The plot, which has been criticized for its dark humor and cruelty, is inspired by many films related with this “bank robbers” topic, such as the well-known The Italian Job. There are also many “easter eggs” spread through the map that are a clear reference to other videogames and films such a Vin Diesel character model, a Halo dressed-like mime and even UFO´s. Finally the massive open world features various species of both animals and plants which increases the level of realism.

But of course, it has also its downsides. As mentioned before, many people has criticized this game since it was released on September last year. They can´t accept its irrational violence and the presence of adult and illegal topics like the consumption of drugs or the strong sexual content. From our point of view it is true that violence is a bit overused but as you can easily see, it isn´t made for young audiences. All this depends on the user’s reaction to the videogame.

Now let´s move on to the technical aspects of the game. Grand Theft Auto V was first released on PlayStation3 an Xbox360 the eleventh of September in 2013.

When installed the game occupies about 9 GB in your console´s hard disk, which isn´t too much, but will completely fill it if you have the 12 GB version. It can get even worse due to the constant updates developers create in order to add content and fix bugs and glitches. As said before the game runs naturally in your system although it makes it reach its limits because of the big amount of data the console has to process at certain situations; for example, when loading graphics, animations, or running physics. Esther San Miguel Busto (born May 5, 1975 in Burgos) is a Spanish judoka. She has won six national titles and two European titles for the half-heavyweight division (78 kg). Get up stand up, stand up for your rights Human rights day celebrated on 10 December Many years after the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was proclaimed in 1948 by the United Nations General Assembly, human rights violations still persist. One example is that millions of people around the world do not have access to health care, a right that is recognized in article 24 of that Declaration (Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and wellbeing of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care). A main fact that provokes this problem is extreme poverty. Healthcare is not free for everybody.

Resources are not distributed equally and poor populations cannot afford to pay for doctors or medicines.

The case of Africa Every year there are millions of unjustified deaths in this continent because of diseases that we can treat. For example, malaria: a disease you can get through a bite from a mosquito

infected with parasites and that causes a high fever, chills and muscle pain, and very serious problems, such as damage to the heart, lungs, kidneys or brain.

Malaria kills every year more than 700.000 people that do not have enough money to fight it.

In sub-Saharan Africa this is one of the main factors of mortality. For this reason, there are many organizations, such as a Spanish one, Manos Unidas, that try to help in this situation by sending doctors and volunteers to the most affected areas or collect money through different campaigns.

The situation in Spain Since 2012, many organizations that defend human rights are denouncing that a new Spanish law, published in Official State Gazette, is forgetting the universality of its previous healthcare model and changing it into a system of assurances. They denounce the combinations of cut

backs and social exclusion because undocumented immigrants in our country do not have any more healthcare coverage for free. The World Health Organization warns that health equity is essential. However, this is not always respected.

To give an example, some media reported the case of a woman from Bolivia (Soledad Torrico, 42 years-old), who died in Valencia last year supposedly because she did not have her insurance card, so she could not receive any attention in the

three hospitals that she visited.

Her family is still demanding justice for her death.

The importance of Ethics Should Ethics have the same importance as other more technical subjects in school? Certainly, some people think it may interfere with school´s timetable taking away some time that could be better used for other things that prepare students for their professional life. However, there are also people who consider that we are too interested in acquiring knowledge to compete in an economic world, without realizing that our education should also focus on learning values that are basic for living in a civilized society. More precisely nowadays, we have seen how some financial techniques are being used against the interests of consumers or how it seems our society assumes that lying, stealing, etc. is something normal.

These and many other problems (for example, how technologies are affecting our culture), seem to need an ethical reflection.

The point is that, apart from the important values we learn through our families, Ethics can be a subject in which students learn the basis of good human relationships in order to know both themselves and others better. Working in groups in class, they can interact, exchanging opinions, discussing topics and sharing experiences, promoting debates and respect among students in an atmosphere of tolerance. These are values that students try to learn and practice at school, although some adults say sometimes â&#x20AC;&#x153;young people nowadays don´t have any values at allâ&#x20AC;?.

Thousands of euros will be spent in the building of a new bullring in our town. Yet, citizens believe that as the budget will be on the public debit of the town, we will have to pay for it (through taxes, of course).

Most people from Burgos think this is a luxury not really neces-

sary these days, since we have other needs in town. As it happened last year with the “bulevar”, quite a large number of neighbors have taken part in demonstrations. We are only teenagers,but , as we are learning to be responsible citizens, we can use these pages to remind authorities about the cuts in Education and Public Health Services, unemployment and many other social problems.

Missing family and friends was expected, when you are far, you sometimes feel more attatched to home. You miss your mother’s hugs, laughing till crying with your father, you miss pulling your brother’s leg. You miss stalking your dog (hahahah) You want to know how are your grandparents are, if they are doing well…

Of course you miss your friends, being natural, being so close…

However here you find you a new family willing to love you, and you will eventually have a group of friends.

I don’t really miss the school, but I do miss my mates.

I find difficult getting used to the timetable. I am not hungry when I am supposed to eat, and when I am starving it’s not time for eating. Walking and riding the bike is not very usual… There’s not very much outdoors life, the food has different flavours, people’s behaviour is not the same.

The point is to look at what is going on. I face it as a challenge, as you have to be part of the new place.

About the people… Wow, ¡that’s a big deal! I notice a lot of politeness, and tolerance. “Respect” is the best word to explain it.

“Sorry, excuse me, thank you, pardon me…” are in their top ten most common words. I found really interesting that everybody has even opposing beliefs and ideas, but all of those thoughts are respected. For instance, you can see how everybody even being atheist respects the different religions. Its also surprising how late people set their families in Spain compared to Canada, how teens are allowed to drive, how all of them cope with parttime jobs…

For example, in my experience… My host family has Menonite origins. Menonites are the religious people that emmigrated from Europe in the XVI century to keep their religious ideas, and way of life as they were in those years. It’s beauti-

ful how meeting new people makes you more open-minded helps you understand the world.

Making friends it’s hard. In Spain people are more willing to know you. In this country inmigrants are really common so it’s not as surprising for them. It’s easy and nice to talk to everybody, but getting closer is not that easy. At home, if somebody is new, the rest will invite him or her. Here it’s the new person the one who has to ask if they want him or her to be with them. So you have to be a bit adventurous and risky (hahhaha) I am taking art, choir, practising sports, I am part of the school musical, the jazz choir, the church youth club... The teachers, even if they are not your own ones, they are 24/7 to help you. They will be there until they are sure you understand the subject. Theis relationship with the students is almost a frienship relationship, as there is respect as well as closeness.

Subjects are not too demanding, I can handle them. The explanations are very clear. The point is that there’s continuous work to hand in. I don’t feel presure, but I find I would appreciate 40hour days to do everything I want to do. Maybe at this very moment I struggle with getting used to my new life. I am a bit confused. I feel as if I had three different lives. The one I had

before coming, the one I have here, and the one I will have after coming back. This is because this year has always been my dream, and is going to change my life. Advantages… learning how to respect, how to understand, how to miss everything you didn’t even notice when you were at home. I am learning a lot of English and academic skills, but that is nothing compared to everything else. Therefore, I feel more complete being able to experience this little world. Of corse this experience is recommendable.

It makes a student not only better student, but also a better person for the future. You develop your own values, as you compare and contrast everything you are living.

I am becoming a hockey suporter, I make scarffs, I am the aunt of two great kids, who I ususally play with … I am finding what I want to do as an adult.

I don’t think I have changed but I do believe I know more about myself.

guide to Burgos Hi guys, do you know about Burgos?, it's an amazing city in the north of Spain. There are too many places to visit and we haven't got enough time, so...

LET'S START A DAY OUT This is a day in San Pedro's celebration, the pattern of Burgos, so we will also do special activities according to this week.

For breakfast, we have a hot chocolat with biscuits in a famous coffee called Ibañez.

Then, we take a bus and we go to Atapuerca's Archeological Site for a touristic visit. To complete this activity, we visit the

Human Evolution Museum.

The museum of Human Evolution in Burgos was created as a modern an excellent learning center by the Junta de Castilla y León, Burgos Town Hall and the Atapuerca Research Team. It was built as a new cultural facility that is appropriate to the display findings of Sierra de Atapuerca Site.

The main purpose was to provide Burgos with a modern museum which could hold not only the archgeological evidences of the Atapuerca Sites, but also the scientific theories involved and the scientific interpretations.

Also, this museum offers holistic vision of human presence of the Earth and presents new theories about human evolution. This is the rightful place for these exceptional sites located in the mountains of Burgos.

After that, we are hungry so we eat traditional food in the typical fast-food places It's three o' clock, so we go to the roaster house for having a typical Spanish lunch.

GASTRONOMY IN BURGOS Burgos’s gastronomy is well known all over Spain. It is rich in fresh fish and meats. Some of the traditional dishes are; black pudding (morcilla de Burgos), fresh cheese and the roast lamb.

Around the cathedral and the “Plaza Mayor” are two very popular areas where you can have a drink, take some “tapas” and regional traditional food. Those places are “Las Llanas”, “La Flora”, Sombrerería Street and San Lorenzo Street.

“La Flora” is a nice square si-

tuated behind the cathedral where we can find new and old pubs. Some of the most important bars and restaurants of this place are “El Dolar”, with its delicious sandwichies, and “Twenty” with its fried squid rings.

“Las Llanas” is another square situated behind the cathedral and next to “La Flora” where you can hear good rock and roll music at night in places like “La Pécora”.

Sombrerería Street and San Lorenzo Street are places with lots of people, noise and a delicious scent that invites you to eat at their outstanding bars and restaurants: you can find a wide variety of salads and tapas in “El Morito”, bravas in “La Aran-

dina” and “El Burgos”, “Cojonudos “in “El Pancho” and Tigers in “La Amarilla”…

“La Favorita” is placed in one of the most historical valuable places of Burgos. It has an added value because it is in the middle of the city route of Santiago´s way. The local combines modern devices with the traditional techniques of Burgos´ cooking.

A very comfortable restaurant is the result of that union, and enhanced with Spanish ham hung

at the ceiling and the grillroom that can be seen by anyone.

In addition, La Favorita won the price of the best Sandwich Author in 2013 with its ``Anchoas a la Favorita´´, which It is placed in Avellano´s Street 8.

“El Polvorilla” is a classic place in Burgos restaurants. It is a comfortable place located at the centre of Burgos that combines traditional Castilian dishes with modern and actual finger food.

Polvorilla is a typical meeting place for Burgos´ people and foreigners where you can talk while you are eating something and drinking a exceptional Rioja wine. It was founded in the 30´s and they have had customers form hunters to bull riders, passing through politicians and actors. It is located at Libertad

Square, number 2.

“Ojeda”. Since the far year of 1912, foundation date of Casa Ojeda, to our time, people of all social classes and condition have enjoyed, between that for walls of the transcendent pleasure of being eating in one of their tables. It is a reference for every restaurant in Burgos. It has an exquisite cooking, and delightful foreign and local products, in addition to a top service of waiters and the stances that are very good maintained.

They have received the prices of: Reaching 2 suns in Repsol Guide and the Excellence Certificate by Tripadvisor. It is placed at Condestable Street number 2.

In Burgos, "Pecaditos” is a very popular bar, especially for its peasonable prices. There are four of those bars scattered around the city. It is a bar specialising in tapas and the food is very fresh because the tapas are preparated for you at the moment. In addition, they are very cheap; the majorities are just one euro.

That bar is also famous for its beers and its wine list. One beer or a glass of wine also cost only one euro.

The first “Pecaditos” in Burgos was opened in 2008, in Calzadas Street. Then, in 2009, anotherone was opened in Sombrereria Street. And now, the Pecaditos Company is planning to open a new one in San Pablo Street. It will be opened in March. And, if everything is OK, they will open another in gamonal.

Many other Spanish cities want a pecaditos, and according to Antonio Cuadrado (owner of this company) in 5 years there will be 50 pecaditos all over Spain.

Rimbonbin is a classic place in the tapeo burgales .For many years ,its excellent location in Sombreria Street ,also called ¨Senda de los elefantes”,next to the Major Square ,has turned it into a really frequented place .In the mornings ,civil servants of the town hall have breakfast and in the evenings ,with one of the most diverse bars of the town ,it has turned it into a real gastronomic reference.

For a quickly review of Burgos, we take the tourist train, so we can see the old town in a short

period of time. The are the main places to see: The castle, the “Espolon”, the cathedral…

The train leaves us at the cathedral, so we go into.We can watch the beautiful windows.

Then we go to have a rest in the hotel ABBA…no it was just a joke.We still having party and we eat an special dinner made by the finalist of the Spanish version programme:Top Chef.

Later we go to a very good place, to watch the incredible fireworks.

After watching the fireworks,we

BURGOS CULTURE Music Burgos province has a big musical variety, with 850 traditional songs and popular dances approximately. There are songs for everybody: profane, religious, Christmas carols, lullabies, weddings…

They are usually played to the beat typical instruments, the “dulzaina” accompanied by small drum, tambourine, castanets…

Traditional feasts Burgos’s traditional celebrations are in honor of Saint Pedro and Saint Pablo. These celebrators are at the end of June and the first week of July; the 29th being the most important day.

During these few damp you can see processions with the typical “Gigantones” and “Gigantillos” in the streets, along with the important people of the municipality like the Mayor. Also you can see a lot of groups of typical clarinets and bagpipes…

SPORTS Although Burgos is not such a big city, it holds quite important sports events such as Atapuerca Cross or The Island Cross which are both national and regional sports events. Because this kind of sports events have been much promoted we can give the chance to participate to everybody who enjoys this exciting competitions.

Atapuerca cross is a racing offroad event which takes place in Atapuerca (Burgos) and is held in order to promote Atapuerca archeology sites, that have been declared World Heritage by U.N.E.S.C.O. , as well as the promotion and development of sport.

Autocid Burgos became a relevant city supporting sport because of its basketball team “Autocid”. “Autocid” was born as “C.D Maristas” in 1997 and in 2001 it became independent from the school and changed the name to “C.B Atapuerca” or “Autocid Ford Burgos”.

It was founded in 1922 and refunded in 1994. Nowadays the team plays in the second division B, group one. And they train in El Plantio. They won only one trophy “Copa Federacion (1996-97).
