[ Interview with Bloodhounds On My Trail by Diego Centurión Translation: Bernardo Jimenez Mesa ]

WE ARE VERY FORTUNATE TO BE PART OF GREAT LOCAL SCENE IN MELBOURNE

Thanks for doing this interview for The 13th Magazine. We are quite far, geographically speaking, but thanks to our friend Shauna McLarnon, we have had the pleasure to find out about your music and ¨Escape II¨. Was the band formed in 2014 or the first show just happened in February of that year? How did you form your band? We formed a few months prior to that first show in February 2014. Chris and I are brothers and Johnny is a friend from high school. We’ve played in a couple of different bands together prior to Bloodhounds. Who are the members of the band currently? Johnny Green, vocals and guitars, Chris Donaldson, guitars, Nik Donaldson, drums, Che Walden, bass. I think your sound is a mixture of both the original shoegaze sound and new forms of that same genre. Who are your main influences? Drums and rhythm-wise, we try to incorporate the mechanics of bands like Velvet Underground or post-punk bands like Joy Division, The Cure etc., whereas the guitars are more influenced by Cocteau Twins, Slowdive as well as certain post-punk.

In October 2014, you recorded and published ¨Escape¨. What you reckon has been the reception and results of this release? We’ve been really pleased with how Escape has been received. The feedback to the record has been very positive and it’s very cool getting a reaction from shoegaze fans and communities around the world. And then, a year after, you also released a ¨Deluxe¨ version with some extra tracks. What can you tell us about these two extra tracks? Yeah the interest in Escape culminated in the release of Escape II and we are indebted to Shauna at Shameless Promotion PR, as well as Raphalite Records and Moon Sounds Records, who have been so good to us. The two extra tracks were ‘She’s In My Plans’, one of our first demos and a remix of ‘Jolly’ by Ummagma. It was a great experience working with Ummagma. We already were big fans of their music and the remix really adds a cool dynamic to the record. From Australia we have already heard Lowtide, who you could say are somewhat close to the kind of sound your band is producing. Which other local bands do you reckon fit in this genre. Is there a local shoegaze scene as such where you live? We are very fortunate to be part of great local scene in Melbourne. As well as Lowtide, there are a number of quality bands: Contrast, Luna Ghost, VHS Dream, Crimsonettes, Miniatures, Hideous Towns…to name a few of our favourites. What is your favourite song from “Escape II”? Any one that you particularly fancy when playing live? ‘She’s In My Plans’ is my favourite from Escape II. It’s one of the first songs we wrote and I just really like the production of it, even though we did it rather quickly as a demo track. How was 2015 for the band? 2015 was good; Che joined the band - and he has really added a new depth and dynamic to the sound, we released Escape II, and recorded the tracks for our forthcoming follow up EP record. Your band will likely start 2016 with a gig…What else can we expect in the new year from you?…any

plans for touring or a new release? The new EP is in the mixing phase at present and will be out in early-ish 2016, depending on how things go. We have a few interstate shows lined up within Australia and are also hoping to do a few dates overseas in 2016 at some point, either in Europe or the US. If you go and try sharing some few words to people who haven´t heard the band yet (triggering some curiosity) what would you say? Generally if I come across a new band that I like, the sound will contain something familiar, yet also something new, so with that in mind I’d say that in Bloodhounds you’ll hear the influence of shoegaze but we are trying to marry that shoegaze sound with a post-punk sensibility. Where can we listen and find out more about your music, keep up with news about the band, etc? Our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ bloodhoundsonmytrail Escape II is available here: https://moonsoundsrecords.bandcamp.com/album/escape-ii Thanks a lot for the interview. Do stay in touch. Sincerely, Diego
