STELLA DIANA WE GO STRAIGHT ON OUR PATH WITHOUT THINKING ABOUT FASHIONS
[ Interview with Dario Torre from Stella Diana by Diego Centuriรณn. ]
WE GO STRAIGHT ON OUR PATH WITHOUT THINKING ABOUT FASHIONS
3 Stella Diana is a band born in 1998 in Naples (Italy) and extracts its name from a Neapolitan song from 1600. To celebrate its twenty years of life, they return with the successor of Nitocris (2016), renewed and more dreaming than ever, we communicate with the band to know their news and their plans with this new work "57". Thank you guys for accepting this interview and resuming the road opened in 2015 we will review these last years and this new album.
Back in 2015 we had a first approach to you. Today, three years after that interview, we return to you with the excuse of a new album. A lot has happened in these three years. "Nitocrisis" (2016), where we could not have a chat with you and a little bit of the thread of our first interview where they promised us a new album that was "Nitocrisis", what feeling has that album left you? First of all thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to talk with you. Answering to your question, I can say that Nitocris represents the first step to the perfect form about playing music we have always figured. That album is very close to the perfection, but it has, in post production and also in compositional phase, some things that don't convince me. However, at the same time, it allowed us to expand our audience and make people understand who we are and I think the cover is one of the most beautiful we've ever done.
we achieved our own personal musical language. now we know exactly how to get an effective melody, how can i say, we can control our sound completely. Personally I know who I'm as artist.
Have you thought about the commemoration of two decades of his birth as Stella Diana? What do you think when you read "20 years"? Sincerely we never think about the time passing. it seems we started yesterday playing Marianne, our first song. I look back and think about how much effort we have made to get to where we are. 20 years are just a few more rehearsals and some more gigs. Nothing but this.
I have read Dario said that in the song "Iris" and in your video, you mention that perfection is represented by number 3, and also thinking about the name of the album, are you very cabalistic? Yes. Absolutely. I teach philosophy and I studied Jewish cabala, esotericism, numerology and ancient religions. I agree with my fellow countryman, the great Giordano Bruno who said that symbols and numbers are a fundamental part of knowledge. In the western civilization, the number three is the substratum, the synthesis of two elements generating a third, perfect thing. If you add 5 and 7, we obtain 12, but 1 and 2 is three. We could talk about it for hours.
How has Stella Diana changed in these twenty years? Surely we are very experienced about the musical environment and it's dynamics and apart this,
We are facing the release of the new album. Why the name of the album? It's a good question, nobody has asked me about the name of the new album. the title is symbolical. Five are our official albums, but if we also include two self-produced albums, then there are seven. Apart form this, number 5 represents the Pentagon, the five pointed star, five senses, and the polymath. NUMBER 7 is the seven ancient planets discovered by the ancient astronomy, the Menorah as the seven lamp decribed in the bible, the Seven deadly sins and also the seven virtues, we can go on forever, but we'd like that people discover by themselves the hidden meanings of these two numbers.
I have also read that the lyrics emphasize the difficulty of communication between people. Can you explain this point a bit? I'm sure there is no real dialogue between people. There is no interpenetration and nobody feels responsible for his own kind. Following Totality and Infinity by Levinas, we have the total responsibility for the other We are in times where everything is very visual, bands often make many videos and manage social networks as a source of exposure. How do you carry this part of the visual exhibition? These are the times of "social" art. Everything goes through the socials or particular platforms. We try to keep our integrity, the same ideals we had when we started. I mean we use the web to reach as many people as possible although we
know that among these, there are few people who really love what we do. But after all how would we do without the web? thanks to the web that we are more considered abroad than in Italy and this is beautiful. The appearance is everything and anyway as far as I'm concerned, it's something that I really care about. i think our music is absolutely elegant and for this reason i want, for example, an artwork for our albums always tasteful and cultured. In the previous interview we talked about how the times changed, and from that interview until today the change increased, everything has become more ephemeral. Do you feel that acceleration of the customs especially in the publication of songs? As I said before, we go straight on our path without thinking about fashions or what is most appreciated at the moment. We have our perso-
5 nal rhythm of life and our personal way of composing and publishing Were there changes in the formation of the band? After 5 years with Davide, a drummer very rigorous and very devoted to new wave, now we have Giulio, an old friend who is totally different: more dynamic with a style that hits on a gut level. We are very happy. What plans do you have now that they have released the album? The answer is obvious. Play and play as much as possible. Everywhere.
To close this interview and thank the possibility of conducting this interview, have this space to tell us what I have not asked and want to tell us. Nothing to say because the questions were very interesting. Concluding with a futile thing: our name is pronounced in the italian way. Stella it's ok, but Diana is with long 'ÄŤ' and 'Ä ' Thanks Stella Diana!
