l instituto Nacional de Biodiverisdad, INBio, ha creado una aplicación para móviles que permite conocer detalles de la biodiversidad presente en las áreas donde uno está. Esta aplicación reconoce la ubicación del usuario y en base a eso, provee un listado detallado de todas las especies de fauna en esa área. A Biodiverse App

he National Institute of Biodiversity (INBIO) has created an app for mobile phones that lets users know details about the biodiversity in the areas where you are at the moment. This application recognizes your location and based on that, provides a detailed listing of all the species of fauna in that area. It’s called TOUIT, a simple to use guide which provides users access to approximately 500 species frequently seen in the country, with quality images, texts and maps of their distribution. It’s 100% free to download and use. All the internal contents are available both in Spanish and English.

artimos a descubrir un nuevo centro turístico subiendo las faldas del Volcán Miravalles, por una ruta que ofrece vistas amplias de Guanacaste con panoramas cambiantes y muy fotogénicos.

Pocos kilómetros antes de llegar a nuestro destino, el paisaje se modifica drásticamente, con un tramo final que parece de otro planeta, entre macizos de rocas esculpidas con maestría por el agua y el viento. Esta inusual geología de formas y colores, sus frecuentes cañones y quebradas, sumado al gran tamaño de las rocas esparcidas por toda el área, hablan de un historial telúrico muy efusivo, de un volcán que habló fuerte en un pasado no tan lejano.

hile on our way to discover a new tourist center up the side of the Miravalles Volcano, we followed a route that offers panoramic views of Guanacaste with changing and very picturesque views. A few miles before arriving at our destination the landscape changed drastically, with a final stretch that looked as if this was a different planet, among huge rocks masterfully carved by water and the wind. This unusual geology of forms and colors, its frequent canyons and brooks, in addition to the large size of the rocks strewn all over the area, speak of a very effusive telluric history, of a volcano that spoke with a strong voice in the not so distant past. Our eyes were wide open. The route is a good companion and enriches the trip. We had still not reached our destination but the road was already adding good experiences. Arriving at Rio Perdido (the Lost River) was a pleasant surprise. A totally unexpected place… when you get there it amazes you.

Arribar a Río Perdido fue una sorpresa grata. Un sitio insospechable…hasta que llegas. Una instalaciones cargadas de buen gusto nos dan la bienvenida. Una arquitectura bioclimática donde reina la luz exterior y la ventilación natural ya sugieren una visión de desarrollo especial. El especial Río Perdido de cálidas aguas termales, una ruta de canopy por el cañón del Río Blanco, paisajísticas rutas ciclismo de montaña, puentes colgantes, senderos para caminatas, miradores y 3 piscinas de aguas termales, son los atractivos del lugar. Un amplio restaurante con una cocina localista con un toque gourmet muy bien logrado, un spa, cómodos camerinos, instalaciones de calidad junto a un servicio atento y muy profesional redondean la experiencia.

This is one of the things that make you take notice: A variety of micro climates and a very heterogeneous biodiversity, something not usually found in such a compact area.

The special warm thermal waters of Perdido river, a canopy zip line route through the Blanco river canyon, mountain bike routes, hanging bridges, hiking trails, look out points and 3 thermal water pools are the attractions of this place. There is a large restaurant that offers local cuisine with a well achieved gourmet touch. A spa and comfortable changing rooms, all quality facilities accompanied by attentive service round out the experience.

Un río oculto… un paraíso encontrado.

Lost river… paradise found.

Por cosas del destino, el lugar permaneció oculto por años incluso para los habitantes de los alrededores. Un puente caído, que nunca fue reconstruido y rutas alternativas ya existentes, hizo que este río termal y sus impresionantes alrededores, permanecieran fuera de las rutas modernas y que el área persistiera tal como su nombre lo indica, oculto por décadas de la vista de los humanos.

Destiny conspired to keep this place hidden for many years even from the people that lived nearby. A collapsed bridge that was never rebuilt and already existing alternate routes, kept this thermal river and its impressive surroundings outside the modern routes and caused the area to remain just as its name implies, hidden from the sight of humans for decades.

Pero no siempre fue así. La gran cantidad de cerámica chorotega encontrada en el área, dan señal de que los indígenas disfrutaron de esta área desde tiempos ancestrales.

But such was not always the case. The large number of chorotega ceramics found in the area, are indications that indigenous people enjoyed this area since ancestral times.

As shown in aerial views, the owners of this place have conserved the surrounding forests intact, concentrating all the services in a central building that occupies only a small area of the preserve. Other areas within the preserve that were previously used for cattle rising are being recovered and reforested and over 350 acres have been placed under the supervision of Minaet as a private conservation area.

At Rio Perdido one perceives the respect for the environment. One can tell the place was not designed to serve tourist objectives. On the contrary, the experience was adapted to allow seeing and touring what the place already offered naturally.

Tal como lo muestran las vistas aéreas, los dueños han conservado casi intactos los bosques circundantes, concentrando todos los servicios en un edificio central que ocupa solo una pequeña área de la reserva. Otras áreas previamente de uso ganadero, están siendo recuperadas y reforestadas, y más de 140 hectáreas han sido puestas bajo tutela del Minaet como área privada de conservación. En Río Perdido se percibe respeto por el medioambiente. Se nota que no se diseño un lugar en base a los objetivos turísticos. Por el contrario, se adaptó la experiencia para dejar ver y recorrer lo que el lugar naturalmente ya ofrecía. Por ahora los turistas pueden disfrutar del lugar en modalidad de day-tour, pero ya en Diciembre contarán también con habitaciones, algo bueno pues un día se hace insuficiente para recorrerlo a cabalidad. Ofrecen también alquiler de bicicletas o usted puede llevar la suya. Pronto también ofrecerán rafting y kayak por el cañón del Río Blanco. Lo invitamos a visitar este lugar, a descubrir Río Perdido y encontrarse con una gran experiencia. Durante todo el 2013 están ofreciendo precios de introducción muy accesibles a cualquier presupuesto. Río Perdido es un lugar para relajarse en las cálidas aguas de sus piscinas o del mágicamente temperado Río Perdido. Un lugar para caminar, aventurar, fotografiar, disfrutar de la naturaleza y dejarse seducir por ella.

For the time being, tourists can enjoy the area during day tours but by December Rio Perdido will also have rooms, which is a great thing because one day is not enough to fully explore it. They also offer bicycles for rent or you may bring your own. They will soon also offer rafting and kayaking on the Rio Blanco Canyon. We invite you to visit this place and to rediscover the Lost River. You will have a great experience. During all 2013 they are offering introductory prices very accessible to all budgets. Rio Perdido is a location to relax in the warm waters of its pools or the magically warmed Perdido River. Por la panamericana, se llega a Bagaces, donde se toma la ruta hacia el pueblo de Guayabo. Son 14 km. por esta ruta y poco antes de llegar a Guayabo, se dobla a la derecha en el cruce hacia el pueblito de Fortuna siguiendo 4km. por esta ruta. Antes de Fortuna, se debe doblar a la derecha en el cruce hacia San Bernardo, para recorrer luego un último tramo de 3.5km por camino de lastre hasta Río Perdido. (GPS: 10.592699, -85.200705)

On the Interamerican Highway, go to Bagaces where you take the route towards the town of Guayabo. It’s 8.5 miles on this route and a little before arriving at Guayabo, turn right at the cross roads to the little town of Fortuna, continue 2.5miles on this road. Básicamente trabaje desde un comienzo con un agente de bienes raíces profesional y un abogado especializado en bienes raíces.

1) Propiedad titulada: Es la forma más completa de propiedad en Costa Rica. Afortunadamente para los extranjeros, los derechos y responsabilidades de propiedad son idénticos que para los nacionales. El concepto de propiedad titulada es muy similar al concepto de “Fee Simple Title” de los EE.UU. Básicamente, la propiedad titulada le da al dueño el derecho absoluto de poseer, usar, disfrutar, vender, arrendar, etc. sujeto solo a las condiciones establecidas por la ley costarricense.

Fortunately for foreigners, ownership rights and responsibilities are the same for Costa Rican nationals as they are for foreigners. The concept of titled property is very similar to the concept of fee simple title in the US. Basically, titled property gives the owner of that property the absolute right to materially own the property, use it, enjoy it, sell it, lease it, improve it, etc. subject only to conditions outlined in the Costa Rican Laws. 15

2) Property under Condominium Regime: Property can be owned in either a horizontal condominium (subdivision) or a vertical condominium (multi-family housing). In Costa Rica, there is a specific law that in combination with other legal dispositions regulates all conditions required in order to set up a condominium. Each condominium development has its own bylaws containing all of the restrictions, limitations and privileges that can be enjoyed by individuals who purchase a property in such a development. Ownership of property “in condominium” is fee simple ownership but specifically restricted to secure the interest of the condominium community set initially by the developer and later by the Home Owners Association. It is advised that you require the owner of the property to give you a copy of the by-laws to check for architectural guidelines, land use and others.

3) Concession Property in the Maritime Zone: The first 200 meters inland from the high tide line is considered the maritime zone. This zone also includes islands, pinnacles of rock, mangroves, estuaries, small islands and any small natural formation that overcome the level of the ocean. In Costa Rica, 95% of beachfront property is considered concession property and is governed by the Maritime Zone Law and other specific regulations including but not limited to special dispositions stated by municipalities and the ICT (Costa Rican Institute of Tourism). These legal dispositions set forth the conditions under which foreigners and local residents can own concession property. A concession in Costa Rica is defined as the right to use and enjoy a specific property located on the maritime zone for a pre-determined period of time. The estate through the respective municipality grants this right.

3) Propiedades Concesionadas en la Zona Marítimo-Terrestre (ZMT): En todo el borde costero nacional, los primeros 200 metros de tierra desde la línea de marea alta es considerada como zona marítimo-terrestre. Esta zona también incluye islas, pináculos de rocas, manglares, estuarios, islotes y cualquier formación natural que supere el nivel del mar. En Costa Rica, el 95% de la propiedad frente a la playa se considera propiedad de concesión y se rige por la Ley de ZMT y varias normativas específicas, incluyendo disposiciones de municipios y/o del ICT (Instituto Costarricense de Turismo). Estas disposiciones legales establecen las condiciones en las que se puede poseer propiedades costeras en concesión, definida como el derecho de uso y disfrute de una propiedad específica situada en ZMT, por un período determinado de tiempo. El Estado a través de sus municipalidades, otorga y garantiza estos derechos, que quedan condicionados al respeto de un conjunto de condiciones.

n 2008, Luciano Capelli y Yazmín Ross lanzaron un esfuerzo editorial conjunto: “Guanacaste: Rutas de Viaje “, un diario fotográfico y literario sobre esta singular provincia de Costa Rica, que ha sido uno de los libros más populares en el país durante los últimos años. El proyecto original llevó casi tres años de montar. Luciano confesó que la mayor tarea fue la de elegir las fotografías de entre las cinco mil que tomó. Muchas quedaron fuera en esa ocasión, así que realmente no es una sorpresa que quisiera presentar una nueva versión del libro.

n 2008, Luciano Capelli and Yazmin Ross released their joint effort: “Guanacaste: Rutas de Viaje – Travel Routes”, a photographic and written journal of this unique Costa Rican province. It has been one of the most popular books in Costa Rica for the last five years. The original project took nearly three years to assemble. Luciano told me he had to decide which photos would appear in the book among the five thousand that he took. So it really is no surprise that he wanted to present a new version of the book. The 2013 edition contains one hundred thirty-five new photos. Beginning with the first two photographs in the book, the images are stunning. The patience needed for this kind of selection speaks for itself. It is not every day that a photographer can catch a school of manta rays leaping out of the water, as if on cue… He also confided that he used a very high-resolution printing process, along with augmenting his own photos with about fifty others by Pablo Cambronero and Simone Manzo in addition to the underwater photos of Diego Mejías.

Just as it was difficult to edit the photo selections down to the original version, it must have been equally hard to choose the new ones for this new edition. But when I opened the cover for the first time, I was amazed at the new shots. It is easy to see why Capelli wanted to put out this new version. I am sure these new photos have been “calling” to him for their deserved exposure for some time. Luciano also expanded the book to include the entire Nicoya Peninsula, including Montezuma and the beautiful beaches of Malpais, where the road ends and the legendary band got its name. The entire book has been revised: some of the original photos have been moved to other locations in the new book and Ms. Ross’ printed words (in Spanish and English) have been reconfigured on the page. It is still a book of eight chapters: the introductory “Routes to Get Lost In”, followed by “Marine Routes”, “Volcano Routes”, “Pre-Colombian Routes”, “Routes of Tradition”, “Ranch Route”, “Nature Route” and “Summertime Route”.

¿Recuerda aquellos tiempos en que los regalos de boda duraban más que los propios matrimonios y en que los juguetes eran heredados por los hermanos menores?

Do you remember when the wedding presents used to last longer than the marriage itself and the toys were passed down to the younger siblings?

Hoy eso ya no sucede. Hoy TODO se rompe, se desgasta o se daña en poco tiempo. Las cosas son pobremente fabricadas para que pronto tengamos que comprar un reemplazo.

That does not happen anymore. Today, everything breaks, is worn down or damaged within a short time. Things are poorly made so that we have to buy a replacement.

No es que las industrias de hoy sean menos capaces de hacer las cosas bien. Todo lo contrario: Si quisieran, podrían construir todo para que dure por décadas. Pero no quieren… sería un mal negocio.

It’s not because industry today is less capable of making things well. On the contrary; if they wanted to, they could build everything so that it lasted for decades. But it’s their choice not to; it would be bad business.

Hoy en la fabricación de las cosas manda una poco ética ley de mercado, en particular una practica casi generalizada en el sistema productivo global llamada Obsolescencia Programada, que dice que si los productos duran menos, serán reemplazados con mayor frecuencia y así las empresas venderán más y ganarán más. Esta maquiavélica estrategia productiva nació hace casi un siglo en manos de Philips, Osram y General Electric, entre otros fabricantes de lámparas agrupados. A very unethical “market law” guides the manufacturing of products today, in particular a generalized practice in the global production system called Programmed Obsolescence which says that if the products last less, they will be replaced more frequently and thus the companies will sell more and profit more. This Machiavellian production strategy had its origin nearly a century ago at a meeting of Philips, Osram, General Electric and other lamp manufacturers.

Había nacido esta nueva fórmula de negocio donde los productos serían conscientemente diseñados para fallar luego de un determinado periodo de tiempo. No podemos negar que es una idea inteligente para el bolsillo de los industriales pero el beneficio de unos cuantos ha resultado ser una gran lacra para la salud del planeta y la de todos sus habitantes. Hoy, gracias a esta idea…se usa muchísimos más recursos y se produce mucha más basura. No hablamos de un poquito más, sino decenas de veces más. ¿Acaso no importa que usted pierda calidad, su bolsillo pierda dinero, el planeta pierda recursos y reciba más basura? Han pasado más de 90 años desde que caímos en el juego del compre, use y tire. El consumismo exagerado, o como prefiero llamarlo “el basurismo” no ofrece un buen futuro. No existe un planeta ambiental y otro planeta de negocios, es un solo mundo, donde el único futuro posible es la sostenibilidad, el re-uso, el reciclaje y la optimización de recursos. Los consumidores del siglo 21 tenemos acceso a información, capacidad de organización y podemos exigir un cambio. Al fin y al cabo, nosotros como consumidores controlamos la demanda, y la demanda controla la oferta.

Un ejemplo: El iPod original tenia una batería que duraba solo 18 meses y Apple no ofrecía un repuesto. Un grupo de consumidores presentó una demanda colectiva contra la empresa y el resultado fue que Apple se vio forzada a aumentar la vida útil de las baterías y además a ofrecer repuestos. Si como consumidores nos volvemos más vigilantes y exigentes de la calidad de los productos que nos ofrecen, veremos cambios. Comprar productos baratos pero desechables, es además una pésima inversión si consideramos que tendremos que hacer la misma compra muchas veces. En 5 años habremos gastado más que si hubiésemos comprado algo de calidad desde el principio. Así que por favor, al comprar use la cabeza: En el largo plazo, su bolsillo y el planeta se lo agradecerán.

Today, as a result of this idea…many more resources are used and much more trash is generated. We are not referring to a bit more, but over tenfold more. It makes no difference that quality is lost, your pockets lose money and the planet misspends its resources and is inundated by trash. Business is business is the hymn. More than 90 years have gone by since we fell into the trap of buy, use for a while, throw it away and buy again. The exaggerated consumerism or what I prefer to call “trashmerism” does not depict a good future. There isn’t an environmental planet and a separate business planet. There is only a single world, one in which the only future possible requires sustainability, re-usage, recycling and the optimization of resources. The consumers of the 21st Century have access to information, organization capability and can demand a change. After all, we as consumers control the demand and the demand controls the supply. An example: The original iPod had a battery that lasted only 18 months and Apple didn’t offer a replacement. A consumer group filed a collective demand against the company and as a result, Apple was forced to increase the useful life of the batteries in addition to selling replacements. If as consumers we become more vigilant and demanding of quality in the products we are offered, we will see changes. Buying cheap, disposable products is a very bad investment if we consider that we will have to make the same purchase over and over again. In 5 years we will have spent more than if we had purchased a quality product from the beginning. Therefore, please use your head when making purchases. In the long run, your pocket and the planet will be grateful.

os monos aulladores están entre las principales estrellas de la fauna local y suelen ser los protagonistas más frecuentes entre las fotografías de turistas. Son criaturas adorables, pacíficas y que no sienten temor de adentrarse en áreas urbanas. Lamentablemente para ellos, sus carreteras son las copas de los árboles y en la medida que el desarrollo humano va creciendo y los árboles van siendo menos, las tradicionales rutas de estos primates se van viendo interrumpidas, quedando sin conexión entre un árbol y el siguiente. Cuando esto sucede, los monos usan en reemplazo los cables del tendido eléctrico y con frecuencia, sufren descargas eléctricas que les causan graves daños o incluso la muerte.

owler monkeys are the main stars of the local fauna and are the most frequent models for tourist’s photographs. They are adorable, peaceful creatures that are not fearful of venturing into urban areas. Sadly for them, their roads are the tree tops and as humans develop more areas trees become less numerous and the traditional routes of these primates are interrupted resulting on breaking the connection between one tree and the next. When this happens, the monkeys replace the missing tree with the use of electrical cable and frequently receive electrical shocks that hurt them seriously or even kill them.

Organizados para frenar el problema.

Para ayudar a prevenir esto, en comunidades como Tamarindo, Playas del Coco y Playa Hermosa, se han formado grupos ciudadanos dedicados a financiar e instalar puentes para monos en los puntos de cruce que han quedado cortados. Más recientemente la Universidad de Costa Rica, en alianza con empresas eléctricas como ICE y Coopeguanacaste han estado realizando estudios y recolectando información para poder tomar mejores decisiones y crear soluciones.

Organized to put a stop to the problem.

To help in the prevention of this sad situation in communities such as Tamarindo, Playas del Coco and Playa Hermosa among other, citizens have formed groups dedicated to finance and install monkey bridges in the locations where their route has been cut off. More recently the University of Costa Rica, in alliance with electric companies such as ICE and Coopeguanacaste, has been conducting studies and collecting information to be able to make better decisions and create solutions. As complimentary measures to the bridges, devises have been installed to prevent the monkeys from climbing the electrical posts and the traditional biological corridors are being reforested with the purpose of giving back safe routes to the animals.

In search of a more definitive solution, Lisa Bradshaw of Save Coco’s Monos in Playas del Coco has been working in alliance with Coopeguanacaste to take a step forward through the installation of insulated wire at the most sensible crossing points. “To date, over 900 feet of “naked’ cable have been replaced at several critical points and there have been no more electrocutions at those sites” Lisa Bradshaw tells us. The installation of insulated cable is a more expensive solution but clearly it’s more definitive, establishing a barrier between the electricity and the animals, thus eliminating the possibility of electrocution.

“Unfortunately the monkeys don’t always use the bridges we have installed. It’s difficult to change the behavior of the packs so we wanted to find a foolproof solution and this seemed to us like the best option” says Lisa. “Coopeguanacaste has helped us with the installation of the bridges and more recently with the replacement of the cable, but for the moment they don’t have the budget available for this type of covered cable at over twice the cost of the “naked” cable. For this reason, it still depends on whether the communities can cover the expense” she adds.

Dentro de las medidas complementarias a los puentes, se han instalado dispositivos para impedir que los animales trepen a los postes y se ha estado reforestando los corredores biológicos tradicionales con el fin de devolver rutas seguras para los animales. En busca de una solución más definitiva, Lisa Bradshaw de Save Coco’s Monos, en Playas del Coco, ha trabajado en alianza con Coopeguanacaste para dar un paso adelante mediante la instalación de cables aislados en los punto de cruce más sensibles. “Hasta el momento se han reemplazado 280 mts. de cable ‘desnudo’ en distintos puntos críticos y no hemos vuelto a tener electrocuciones en esos sitios” nos cuenta Lisa Bradshaw.

Coopeguanacaste confirmed this and explained that for reasons of budget restriction, it has not been possible to extend this practice to more points on the network, but that they are already considering using this type of cable when they lay new cable in ecologically sensitive areas. “We are committed to work with all the communities and to respond to the needs that may arise” explains Marisol Arias from Coopeguanacaste. “We have our crews and cranes at the service of the communities to attend to these situations and to help in the installation of bridges or insulated wire and as of today we have installed a total of 140 bridges and hundreds of feet of covered cable. We are closely monitoring the incidence of accidents and trouble related to the fauna, carrying out reforestation, strategic pruning, insulation of transformers and several other actions to tackle the problem. The alliance with the UCR has allowed us to learn much about the behavior of the packs and is helping us to give better advice for the decision making in this respect” she adds.

“Coopeguanacaste nos ha ayudado con la instalación de los puentes y más recientemente con el reemplazo de cables, pero por ahora no disponen de presupuesto para este tipo de cables recubiertos cuyo costo es más del doble que el cable ‘desnudo’. Por ello, aún dependen de que las comunidades podamos aportarlo.” agrega. En Coopeguanacaste nos confirman esto y explican que por restricciones tarifarias, no les ha sido posible extender esta práctica a más puntos de la red, pero que están valorando el uso de este tipo de cables en nuevos tendidos que hagan en puntos ambientalmente sensibles. “Tenemos el compromiso de trabajar con todas las comunidades y responder a las necesidades que se presenten” explica Marisol Arias de Coopeguanacaste. “Tenemos a nuestro personal y grúas a disposición de las comunidades para atender estas situaciones y ayudar en la instalación de puentes o de cables aislados y hasta hoy se han instalado en total 140 puentes y cientos de metros de cable recubierto.
