Cerca de 1.500 nuevas habitaciones en Guanacaste y miles de nuevos empleos. La economía de Guanacaste sigue al alza, gracias al efecto dominó desatado por el nuevo aeropuerto y la variedad de nuevos vuelos desde y hacia Guanacaste. El panorama actual y las atractivas proyecciones a futuro, han atraído inversiones y una explosión de nuevos hoteles en la zona. Junto con la apertura hace un año de RIU Palace con 538 habitaciones, este Diciembre del 2013 está abriendo el hotel Hyatt Andaz Papagayo, con 153 nuevas habitaciones y ubicado dentro de Península Papagayo, cercano a la marina.

Good things happening in favor of Guanacaste and its people.

Near 1,500 new rooms and thousands of new Jobs in Guanacaste. The economy of Guanacaste keeps rising thanks to the domino effect created by the new airport and the variety of new flights from and towards the province. The current outlook and the positive long-term projections have attracted investments and caused an explosion of new hotels in the area. One year ago, in December 2012, RIU Palace opened its doors with 538 rooms. A year later, in December 2013 it is the turn for Hyatt Andaz Papagayo Hotel, with 153 rooms near the Marina at Peninsula Papagayo.

También ahora en Enero 2014, en la zona de Playa Panamá, está iniciando operaciones Hotel Mangroove, un hotel boutique de 85 habitaciones, desarrollado por el prestigioso consorcio nacional Enjoy Group.

In Panama Beach, Mangroove Hotel will have its opening in January 2014; a boutique hotel with 85 rooms developed by the prestigious Costa Rican consortium Enjoy Group.

En tanto para Junio 2014 y también en el Golfo de Papagayo, está prevista la apertura del segundo Marriott de la provincia, esta vez con 360 habitaciones, mientras que un mes después abriría sus puertas Paradisus Papagayo Bay de la cadena Sol Meliá, con 379 habitaciones y un sistema todo-incluido muy orientado al segmento de convenciones y grupos de incentivos.

For June 2014, also in the Gulf of Papagayo, the second Courtyard Marriott of the province will open doors; this time with 360 rooms. For December 2014, another big hotel will open the doors: Dreams Las Mareas, a luxurious 5 star hotel with 423 rooms, which will be a pioneer for the area of La Cruz, in the North end of Guanacaste. Y ya cerrando el año, en Diciembre del 2014 será el turno de Dreams Las Mareas, un lujoso hotel 5 estrellas y 423 habitaciones, que además será todo un pionero y una novedad para el cantón de La Cruz, en el extremo Norte de Guanacaste, una zona menos desarrollada a nivel turistico que las sureñas tierras vecinas de Papagayo o el eje Tamarindo-Flamingo.

Altogether, more than 1,400 new rooms available in the province, greater variety of options for tourists, more promotion and presence for the destination Guanacaste, thousands of new permanent jobs and millions of dollars injected into the economy of Guanacaste.

En conjunto, más de 1.400 nuevas habitaciones disponibles en la provincia, mayor variedad de opciones para el turista, más exposición para el destino Guanacaste, miles de nuevos empleos permanentes y cientos de millones de dólares inyectados a la economía local, ofrecerán un fuerte impulso a la actividad económica provincial y un prometedor panorama futuro.

The domino effect will continue with a big impulse to the local economy and new investments on parallel services, all contributing to a promising near future for the province. 07

Playas del Coco scores another goal!

Playas del Coco es una comunidad organizada y muy activa, que en años recientes ha mejorando mucho su infraestructura urbana y con ello la calidad de vida de sus vecinos. Hace ya 4 años se recuperó totalmente la ZMT (Zona Maritimo Terrestre) y hace 2 se construyó en ella un hermoso parque costero. Más recientemente, se ensanchó y re-pavimentó la calle principal.

Playas del Coco is an organized and very active community that in recent years has made great progress in its urban infrastructure, and with it has improved the quality of life of its residents. Four years ago the shoreline was fully recovered, and 2 years later a beautiful boardwalk was inaugurated. More recently the main street was widened and repaved.

Ahora otro ultra-añorado proyecto de beneficio vecinal ha sido concretado: Un amplio Centro Comunitario, que luego de ser inaugurado en Diciembre 2013 por la Presidenta Chinchilla, quedó a disposición de los vecinos y grupos organizados para el desarrollo de actividades educativas, deportivas, recreativas o sociales, además de un centro de cuidado diurno para personas de la 3ra edad.

Now another longed-for project that benefits all neighbors has been completed: An ample Communitarian Center that after being inaugurated by President Chinchilla in December 2103 became available for residents and organized groups of this community for the development of educational, recreational and social activities; in addition to a Center of Care for Senior Citizens.

Creciendo Juntos, crece con Guanacaste. Tras 12 años de gestión y muchos proyectos impecablemente ejecutados, Creciendo Juntos, uno de los mayores programas de responsabilidad empresarial de todo Costa Rica, ha dado un giro que le permitirá expandir el alcance de los proyectos y a la vez, le facilitará la unión de fuerzas y recursos con programas de RSE de otras empresas de la zona. En estos 12 años de Creciendo Juntos han sido incontables las alianzas con comunidades de Guanacaste y decenas los proyectos desarrollados en ellas con la colaboración del INA, MEP, Univ. Nacional y Univ. Earth, AyA, ACG, ICE y organizaciones extranjeras como Children’s Well-Being y Canadian Vision Care. El resultado ha sido educación ambiental para 38.713 niños de Guanacaste, 217 cursos de actualización para docentes, 4.649 jóvenes han aprendido un nuevo oficio, 5.718 niños han recibido atención oftalmológica gratuita y otros 9.182 niños de escasos recursos han recibido chequeo médico y tratamiento.

Growing Together, it grows with Guanacaste. After 12 years of existence and many projects impeccably executed, Growing Together, one of the larger programs of corporate responsibility of all Costa Rica, has given a turn that will allow them expanding the reach of their projects and will facilitate the union of forces and resources with other programs of corporate responsibility of the area. In these 12 years Growing Together has developed hundreds of alliances with communities of Guanacaste, and dozens of projects conducted with the collaboration of INA, MEP, Univ. Nacional, Univ. Earth, AyA, ACG, ICE and foreign organizations like Children’s Well-Being and Canadian Vision Care. The result has been environmental education for 38,713 children of Guanacaste, 217 training courses for teachers, 4,649 young people have learned a new profession, 5,718 children have received free ophthalmology care and other 9,182 children of limited resources have had access to medical control and treatment.

Si viene a Costa Rica, traiga zapatitos…

If you come to Costa Rica, bring extra shoes…

Un día Lisa Garrett tuvo la oportunidad de traer una donación de 80 pares de zapatos desde su país de origen y coordinar luego su entrega a niños necesitados de Guanacaste. Aquella donación era un oportunidad de una sola vez, pero dada la respuesta de los niños y la grandes necesidades detectadas, decidió transformar la idea en un programa permanente. Con asistencia de profesores de las escuelas y el Children’s Well-Being Center, han ido identificando las necesidades y expandiendo el área de cobertura.

One day Lisa Garrett had the opportunity to bring a donation of 80 pairs of shoes from her country of origin and coordinate the delivery to children in need in Guanacaste. That donation was a one time only opportunity, but given the answer of the children and the detected necessities, she decided to transform the idea into a permanent program. With the support of local teachers and Children’s Well-Being Center, they have been identifying the necessities and expanding their reach.

“Si usted viene de vacaciones , traiga zapatos para regalar a los niños. Esos niños vivirán un poquito mejor gracias a usted, felices de ir a la escuela con buenos zapatos, jugar al fútbol sin dañarse o simplemente tener un calzado acorde con sus pies, pues hay niños que andan con los pies apretados y otros con zapatos muy grandes, pues los heredaron de un hermano mayor” explica Lisa. Esta estadounidense radicada en Costa Rica, tiene un largo historial en ayuda social y recaudación de fondos para programas internacionales, pero esta vez han decidido no aceptar donativos en dinero sino solo zapatos (nuevos o con escaso uso. Negros para colegio, zapatillas de gimnasia y/o botines de futbol. Para niños de 5 a 15 años.)

El programa es ambicioso y aspira a que pronto sean decenas los voluntarios de gira por comunidades de todo el país. Lo invitamos a ponerse en los zapatos de esos niños y sumarse a este noble programa como donante o voluntario. En su próximo viaje a Guanacaste, eche unos pares de zapatitos a su maleta y regale sonrisas a niños necesitados. Y si vive acá, en su próxima salida de shopping agregue unos zapatitos al carro y cuénteselo a Lisa, quien coordinará la recepción y entrega de su aporte o usted puede dejarlos directamente en las siguientes direcciones:

They will be happy to go to school with good shoes, to play soccer without injuring or simply to have footwear that fits them. There are many children who walk around with wrong size shoes because they wear hand-me-downs shoes from siblings” explains Lisa. This American based in Costa Rica has a long record in social aid and fund raising for international programs, but this time she has decided not to accept monetary donations but only shoes (new or with little use; black for

school, tennis shoes and/or shoes for soccer, for children 5 to 15 years).

The program is ambitious and is expected in the near future to have dozens of volunteers in communities all over the country. We invite you to put yourself in the shoes of these children and join this noble cause as a donor or volunteer. Next time you come to Guanacaste, bring extra shoes in your suitcase and make many kids happy. Viejitos pero no solitos… En Villareal, cerquita de Tamarindo, un grupo de voluntarios pensó en los viejitos de su zona y se organizó para crear el Centro Diurno para la Atención de Adultos Mayores, que ofrece a los ancianos de los alrededores la oportunidad de asistir durante el día a un sitio agradable donde disfrutar de la compañía de otros muchachillos de su edad y de entretenidas actividades para realizar.

Según cuenta Javier Abad, gestor del proyecto, el objetivo es mejorar los niveles de independencia junto al bienestar físico, psicológico y social de los adultos que asisten. Aunque el Centro de Atención está en Villareal, está también abierto a los vecinos de otras comunidades cercanas. La existencia de Centros para Adultos Mayores como este de Villareal o como el que abrirán en Playas del Coco, es doblemente relevante para una provincia como Guanacaste, que siendo la mayor Zona Azul de todo el planeta (areas donde la gente vive más años de lo normal), cuenta con un número muy abundante de ancianitos entre su población.

A place for Guanacaste’s Grandpas In Villareal, in the surroundings of Tamarindo area, a group of volunteers inspired by the old people of their community organized to create the Diurnal Center for the Attention of Senior Citizens, a place that offers the elder a pleasant environment and entertaining activities to spend the day surrounded by pals of their age. According to Javier Abad, creator of the project, the objective is to improve the levels of independence and to promote the physical, psychological and social well-being of the people who attend. Even though the Center is in Villareal, it is open to the neighbors of other surrounding communities. Being Guanacaste the biggest Blue Zone of the planet (areas where citizens show an outstanding longevity), the availability of centers for senior citizens, like this one in Villareal or the upcoming in Playas del Coco, are even more significant since the unusual number of elders among Guanacaste’s population.

Cada vez vemos a más gente trotando, disfrutando el sentirse libres y saludables. Otros con unos kilitos de más, nos vamos envalentonando y en cada salida damos nuestro mejor esfuerzo por mantener un buen ritmo… rogando no caer con un ataque de asma al suelo.

Algunos van con sus perros, otros con la novia, con el

coche del bebé o en solitario escuchando música. Todo fiebre que se precie de tal, se ha ido aperando de tecnologías ad-hoc, como monitores cardíacos, sensores de movimiento y corrección del trote, bolsas de hidratación, mini-rastreadores GPS, camisetas anti-sudor o calzado ultra-liviano. Como sea, solo se requiere un short y un par de zapatillas o incluso ni siquiera eso si eliges correr en la playa. Me refiero a prescindir de las zapatillas, no del short… aunque una carrera 100% chingos por la playa podría resultar muy pero muy divertida. ¿Te apuntas? Inscripciones abiertas! Jajaja. Obviamente, también se vale salir full equipadito, salir a lucir públicamente estos nuevos juguetitos adquiridos y esas coloridas prendas actuales, cuyos diseños vienen cada vez más fashion.

Every day we see more and more people jogging, enjoying feeling free and wholesome. Others with some extra pounds build courage and in every occasion do the best effort to maintain a good pace… hoping not to fall to the ground with an asthma attack.

Some go with their dogs, others with the fiancé, the stroller or alone listening to music.

Advanced adepts in the subject display the latest technologies; like cardiac monitors, motion sensors, hydration bags, mini GPS, anti-sweat clothes or ultra-light footwear. Nevertheless, it only takes running shoes and shorts, and not even that if you choose to jog at the beach. And I mean to do without the shoes, not without the short… although a nude race at the beach would be hilarious. Would you sign in? Open inscriptions! Ha ha ha.

Fuera de bromas, esta es una súper buena moda, movida por buenos valores, buenas intensiones y también buenos frutos. Una tendencia digna de seguir y apoyar, en especial en estos tiempos en que la alimentación no es de lo más sana y en que el sobrepeso se ha convertido en un problema de salud pública a nivel global.

Correr…Sí ! ¿Pero donde? ¿Cuando? ¿Y con quien? Ay…que nervios…

Tranquilo que los principiantes no estamos solos en esto. En los últimos años, el fenómeno ha sido impulsado y masificado por una explosión espontanea de carreras bien organizadas en cada rincón del planeta. Esta abundancia de carreras ha sido doblemente positiva, pues ha hecho que sus organizadores, en busca de destacarse, estén siempre ofreciendo nuevos matices y aditivos con conceptos cada vez más originales, divertidos y/o desafiantes. Las invitaciones y propuestas se han diversificado, con eventos adaptados a todos los gustos y capacidades, contagiando a dueñas de casa, oficinistas, estudiantes, niñitos y viejitos, todos decididos a salir de casa y dejarse llevar por las buenas vibras que siempre acompañan a este tipo de eventos. Ahora, todos pueden participar y disfrutar. Esa es la esencia. Para la gran mayoría…ganar es lo de menos. Además del aporte a la salud ciudadana, estas carreras también suelen estar dedicadas a promover buenas causas o apoyar proyectos comunitarios, como por ejemplo la Carrera Contra el Cáncer que un día al año y desde hace una década, atraviesa el Paseo Colón en San José, o la Raw Outdoor, una carrera contra el bullying realizada

To jog…Yes! But… Where? When? And with whom? Relax…we, the beginners are not alone in this. In the last years the phenomenon has been encouraged and made massive by the spontaneous appearance of organized races in every corner of the planet. This abundance of events has been doubly positive because it has made the organizers, in quest of standing out, offer new shades and additives with concepts more and more original, entertaining or challenging. The invitations and proposals have diversified with ideas tailored to all interests and capacities, and spread amongst housewives, clerks, students, children and old people wanting to go out and get carried away by the good vibes that accompany these events. Everybody can participate and enjoy; that is the essence. For the great majority…winning is the least important. In addition to the contribution to public health, these races are also usually dedicated to promote good causes or to support communitarian projects.

- La falta de hidratación durante el ejercicio puede provocar letargia, confusión, dolor de cabeza, calambres o incluso vómitos. 2 horas antes de correr tome 1/2 vaso de agua (100ml) cada media hora. Durante la carrera tome agua en pequeñas cantidades en todos los puestos de hidratación.Y ojo que un exceso de ingesta de agua sin agregar electrolitos, puede producir una disminución del sodio en la sangre y causar molestias similares a las de la deshidratación, por lo que se recomienda hidratar preferiblemente con bebidas isotónicas o si prefiere solo agua se debe complementar con la ingesta de minerales (agregar sal y azucar servirá.)

ell, now “Guana” (nickname for the province of Guanacaste) truly has no reason to envy “Chepe” (nickname for the City of San Jose).

The sadly famous “Platina bridge”, icon of the inefficiency of our dear MOPT (Ministry of Public Works and Transportation), has its own Guana-version. All of us who must commute between Liberia and the beach area “enjoy” in past November spending forced resting periods inside our vehicles in the middle of the highway and under a very “cordial” Guanacastecan sun.

Ahora si que Guana no tiene nada que envidiarle a

Chepe, pues el tristemente famoso “Puente de la Platina”, icono de la ineficacia de nuestro querido MOPT (Ministerio de Obras Públicas y Transporte), tiene su propia versión sabanera. Todos los que nos movemos entre Liberia y las playas, “disfrutamos” tiempo atrás de unos descansos forzados dentro del carro, en medio de la carretera y bajo el cordial sol guanacasteco. ¿La razón? El híper-transitado puente sobre el Rio Tempisque, que conecta a Liberia con Santa Cruz y con toda la zona costera, estuvo cerrado por nada menos que 4 días completos gracias al parchado numero 179.850 que ha tenido este puente. Esta vez, el responsable del cierre fue un pequeño agujerito de 1 ½ mt. de diámetro, a través del cual se podía ver el río! Abierto casi al centro del puente, la ventanilla se abrió en una zona que había sido “arreglada” poco más de un año atrás. Un solo carril alternativo, por el aún más viejo puente paralelo y el resultado fueron extensísimas filas de vehículos, que en horaspico llegaron a tener más de 7 kilómetros hacia cada lado. 24

Because the hyper-busy bridge over the Tempisque River which connects Liberia with Santa Cruz and all the coastal area, was closed for no less than 4 full days thanks to patching job N˚179,850 that has been done to this bridge. On this occasion, the closure was caused by a small hole of some 20sq.ft, through which one could see the river! This window situated practically squarely in the center of the bridge was opened in a section that had been “fixed” a little over a year ago.

With only one other alternate lane which is on the even older bridge parallel to this one, the results were very long lines of vehicles which during peak times lined up for as long as 7 km in each direction. Initial rumors suggested that this hole was not simply an accidental absence of pavement but rather that it was part of a pilot plan by the MOPT which sought to increase the tourist attraction of the national bridges by opening little windows with pretty views to the river that flows below. However, MOPT staff categorically denied this version.

Rumores iniciales señalaban que este forado no era una ausencia accidental de carpeta asfáltica, sino que en realidad era parte de un plan piloto del MOPT que buscaba aumentar el atractivo turístico de los puentes nacionales, abriéndoles ventanitas con lindas vistas al rio que por abajo les pasa. Sin embargo, personeros del MOPT desmintieron tajantemente esta versión. Fuera de bromas, a favor del MOPT es justo decir que en general las carreteras de Guanacaste han mejorado muchísimo en los últimos años y que hoy, los hoyos son más bien una cosa inusual y no la constante que solían ser hace una década atrás. Pero también es justo y necesario decir que este puente ya está con una clara fatiga, que es un puente demasiado estratégico para Guanacaste y que parcharlo cada 2 meses es un total botadero de plata. Lo que aquí se requiere (como mínimo) es un recarpeteo completo. Lo que correspondería, es un puente nuevo. Como probablemente, no lo cambian o lo arreglan bien porque no hay presupuesto…yo tengo una solución: En vez de carpeta asfáltica, que tal si le plantamos encima una bueeeena trooocha… Total para esas… parece que la plata sobra!

Now turning serious, and in all fairness to the MOPT, we should say that overall, the condition of the highways in Guanacaste has improved tremendously in the last several years and today the holes are more of an unusual occurrence rather than the constant state of affairs that it used to be a decade ago. However it’s also just and necessary to say that this bridge is clearly a tired old bridge, that it is a very strategic bridge for Guanacaste and that to keep patching it up every couple of months is a total waste of money. What it requires (as a minimum) is a complete repaving. What would truly be in order would be to build a new bridge. Since most probably it will not be changed for a new one nor will it be properly repaved because ‘there is no budget’…I have a solution: Instead of a newly paved surface, how about if we stick on top of it a good trocha*… After all, for those it seems there is plenty of money! *Editor’s note: Sorry tourists, that’s a funny local joke in Spanish but we found no way to make it work in English too. it makes reference to a big fiasco of a “trocha” road that was started with much fanfare near the border with Nicaragua but ended with a scandal of huge funds misuse…plus it was actually never finished.
