What’s the relationship between golf and the education of underprivileged children? In Guanacaste…a very important one.

Iast concentration, isn’t just that golf can help to cultivate advantages such discipline, control, strategic thinking or

development of the great sense of precision. In Guanacaste, golf is also a sport that over the past 12 years has been instrumental in supplying and outfitting public schools, bolstered the educators and offered the opportunity of continuing education at both the secondary and university level to more children. The enabling bridge between golf and education has been built by “Amigos de la Educación” (Friends of Education), a nonprofit organization from Tamarindo which year after year organizes “Have a Heart”, a golf tournament, which thanks to the contribution by golf players and businesses all over the country, collects important resources and donations to help improve the conditions for the children in Santa Cruz county. This year celebrated the 12th edition of the three day tournament with 55 amateur and professional players at the grand Hacienda Pinilla golf course, crowned by the presence of Alvaro Ortiz, the best Costa Rican golf player of all times. Once more the tournament was a success in terms of attendance and contributions, with a total of $31,000 being raised from the registrations, raffles and a silent auction. The auction featured numerous prizes donated by a long list of national and local companies. Amigos de la Educación has been lending a hand in solidarity to its community through the purchase of books, desks and infrastructure improvements, arranging scholarship programs for kids who are excelling and those who are at social risk across a total of 11 public elementary and high schools. The other hand has been lent by golf, and the union of both hands has provided a solid strength, which for over a decade has made possible the significant and constant improvements to the education system and opportunities to underprivileged children.

¿Que relación tiene el golf con la educación de niños necesitados? En Guanacaste… mucha.

N o se trata únicamente del golf ayudando a cultivar las ventajas de la concentración, disciplina, control de la velocidad, lectura e

interpretación de situaciones o el magnífico sentido de la precisión. En Guanacaste, el golf también es un deporte que desde hace 12 años ha servido de instrumento para mejorar el equipamiento de escuelas públicas, reforzar la docencia y brindar a más niños la oportunidad de continuar sus estudios secundarios o incluso universitarios. El puente de unión lo ha construido Amigos de la Educación, una ONG de Tamarindo que año tras año organiza ‘Have a Heart’, un torneo de golf donde gracias al aporte de golfistas y empresas de todo el país, se reúne importantes recursos para ayudar a mejorar las condiciones para los estudiantes del cantón de Santa Cruz, en Guanacaste. Este año, la 12˚edición del torneo de 3 días reunió, en el flamante campo de Hacienda Pinilla, a 55 golfistas amateurs y profesionales, coronados por la presencia de Alvaro Ortiz, el mejor golfista costarricense de todos los tiempos. Una vez más el torneo fue un éxito de afluencia y de aportes, con $31.000 recaudados gracias a las inscripciones de golfistas y muy en especial por el sorteo o subasta de importantes premios donados por una larga lista de solidarias empresas. Mediante la compra de libros y pupitres, mejorías de infraestructura, planes de educación complementaria, programas de becas para estudiantes en riesgo y para alumnos destacados de 11 escuelas y colegios públicos, Amigos de la Educación ha venido tendiendo una mano solidaria a su comunidad. La otra mano la ha tendido el golf y la unión de ambas manos ha provisto una fuerza muy sólida que por más de una década ha permitido notorias y constantes mejorías en la educación y oportunidades que reciben los niños de escasos recursos. Todos estos logros, gracias al rodar de una pequeña pelotita y a la unión de grandes corazones. ¿Lindo ejemplo, cierto?

The study evaluated the perception of 3,500 frequent travelers from 14 developed countries who gave their point of view on subjects such as culture, society, business climate, patrimony and quality of life in relation to the 113 countries evaluated. Then the results were complimented by the analysis of 103 experts in tourism, exports, investment and public policies and complimented by online debate among tourism professionals from around the world.

With this new, modern, more efficient and several times larger terminal, Guanacaste has taken a giant step in its solidification as an international destination. We are optimistic and ready to flaunt our attributes as a big time destination. It is our first step in proving that we deserve a special place in the big leagues of the global vacation market. The 12th of January 2012 was not only the day when President Chinchilla inaugurated operations in the new building, but was also the day something more symbolic happened. The last cherry was put on top of an exquisite cake called Guanacaste, which already was very tasty but lacked a positive first impression for tourists. Today, the arrival and departure experience in Guanacaste is world class! Guanacaste is already receiving new flights from additional countries while the ICT (Costa Rican Tourism Institute) as well as CATURGUA (Chamber of Tourism of Guanacaste) are working hard to attract new airlines and open new routes that make it easier for travelers from all over the world to come and taste this tropical cake and try for themselves the multi-faceted array of flavors and aromas that make “The Guanacaste experience” come to life.

For years in Guanacaste we tried to convince ourselves (without much success), that our little airport was a very picturesque first tropical encounter and somewhat happily anecdotal for our visitors. The truth is that no matter what rhetoric we used, the small improvised building simply did not measure up. Conversely, the one we have now really does! We went from having a class F airport to a class B. In one jump we skipped 5 categories in the international scale of airport classification.

Durante años los Guanacastecos nos auto-tratamos de convencer (sin mayor éxito), de que nuestro pequeño aeropuerto era un primer encuentro pintoresco, tropicaloide y algo alegremente anecdótico para nuestros visitantes. La verdad es que por mucha retórica que aplicásemos, el pequeño e improvisado edificio simplemente no daba la talla. El de ahora, si que si! Pasamos de tener un aeropuerto clase F a uno clase B. Un salto de 5 categorías en la escala internacional de clasificación aeroportuaria.

Located adjacent to the old terminal, this new building includes all the amenities that were missing in the unpopular old terminal. The new airport has better operating capability, more comfort and an excellent variety of services. The new spacious terminal is two levels and 168,000 sq ft with an additional 81,000 sq ft occupied by access zones, parking and internal areas for a total of 249,000 sq ft and a total investment of approximately US$41.5 million.

Emplazado a un costado de la antigua terminal, este nuevo edificio reúne todos los atributos que le faltaban a la improvisada e impopular vieja terminal, hoy substituida por un aeropuerto de vanguardia, con mejor capacidad operativa, mayor confort y excelente variedad de servicios. 15.600 mt2 construidos en dos niveles conforman esta flamante y espaciosa terminal, a los que se suman otros 7.522mt2 construidos de parqueos, accesos y áreas internas con un total de 23.122mt2 y una inversión total aprox. de Us$41,5 millones.

NEW AIRPORT Designed to accommodate 1,500 passengers per hour (750 arrivals and 750 departures) it has been able to radically reduce the passenger transit time. And although there have been some operational deficiencies on a couple of occasions when there have been more than 4 simultaneous arrivals due to flights being early or late, we have been informed by CORIPORT that contingency plans have already been implemented for such events and they have also made other small adjustments to correct some other situations discovered in the first months of operation. A tourist information center jointly operated by CATURGUA and CALITUR (Liberia Chamber of Tourism) offer a warm welcome and a friendly first orientation to the tourists that so require. Jetways or passenger boarding bridges, several ATMs, a children’s room, 30 airline counters, an expedited clearing of Immigration, improved waiting areas, a better temperature control and beautiful decoration that honors Guanacaste and Costa Rica are just some of the more notable improvements. An area of almost 13,000 sq mt of commercial space provides an ample gamma of services and entertainment for the passengers- another large disparity between the practical abandonment in which our travelers in transit were left in the past. 10

Diseñado para acomodar 1.500 pasajeros por hora (750 llegando / 750 partiendo) ha logrado disminuir radicalmente los tiempos de chequeo y aunque ha habido deficiencias operativas en un par de ocasiones cuando por atrasos o adelantos de vuelos se producen más de 4 llegadas simultaneas, en CORIPORT nos informaron que ya se han implementado planes de reforzamiento para estas eventualidades junto a otros pequeños ajustes para corregir situaciones detectadas en estos primeros meses de operación. Un centro de información turística operado conjuntamente por CATURGUA y CALITUR (Cámara Liberiana de Turismo) dan una cálida bienvenida y una amistosa primera orientación a los turistas que la requieran. Puentes de embarque, varios cajeros automáticos, un salón para niños, 30 counters de aerolineas, un paso mucho más expedito por Migración, mejores áreas de espera, una mejor climatización y una hermosa decoración que hace honor a Guanacaste y Costa Rica, son otras de las mejoras más destacables. Casi 1.200 mt2 de locales comerciales proveen de una amplia gama de servicios y distracciones a los pasajeros, otra gran diferencia con el casi abandono en que quedaban nuestros viajeros en el pasado.

The project and its efficient execution has been the responsibility of Coriport S.A., a conglomerate made up of three investors groups: ADC&HAS Airports Worldwide- an international airports operator, the Canadian design and engineering firm MMM Group and the KKC group, composed of local investors. The concession for the operation has been granted for 20 years although it’s pertinent to clarify that the control of air space and runway (the Air Side) continues to be exclusively operated by the Dirección de Aviación Civil (National Civil Aviation), with Coriport responsibility lying solely with the operation of the terminal. Liberia Airport (LIR): From where and where to can I fly? On which airlines? At this time there are 115 weekly flights operating to the Liberia Airport (LIR), consisting of these airlines: Delta, American Airlines, Taca, Air Canada, United Airlines, US Airways, Continental, Frontier, Jetair fly, Air Berlin and Jet Blue, as well as charters flights from West Jet, Air Transat, Sun Wing, Arkfly, Thomson or Jazz Air and domestic flights of Sansa and Nature Air. Starting in June, Copa will join them with 2 weekly flights from Panamá, connecting to all the capitals of South America. Among the present cities of origin/ destination are Houston, Atlanta, Miami, Dallas, New Jersey (Newark), Nueva York (JFK), Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Charlotte, Brussels, Düsseldorf, Cancun, San Salvador, London and soon all of South America through Copa’s Panama City hub, although the projections indicate that this list of options will continue to grow strongly during 2012 and 2013.

The Howler Monkeys are without a doubt the favorite animals of residents and tourists of Costa Rica. Being the tourism stars that they are, they offer the additional advantage of being easy to find due to their impressing howls. They are also very easy to observe because of their group habits and their slow travel.

From the intensity of the bellowing one imagines that a giant bear, Big Foot or maybe the Incredible Hulk was charging them. As a matter of fact I know someone who even suffered an embarrassing accident in their pants, although the biggest embarrassment came when he learned that the origin of his panic had been a little thing that did not even rich waist high on him. Although they are known locally as “Congo” monkeys, the Alouatta palliata has no relationship whatsoever with that African country, as they are found exclusively in the American tropics in an area that extends from the south of Mexico to the north of Brazil.

The peaceful and sociable Congos are quite an icon of Costa Rica and in particular of Guanacaste, frequently appearing on magazine covers, starring in promotional videos and omnipresent models in all tourism or real estate brochures of the area…There is even a local magazine called Howler. When all is said and done, all tourists want to see monkeys on their tours and in their ideal mental image of paradise they visualize monkeys howling in the garden of their new house on the beach.

In the mountain, good. At the beach...much better. Although they can be found at altitudes up to 2,000mt. Congos prefer lower and warmer grounds with a marked predilection for the lushness of the coastal forests. For this reason it’s usual to see large, healthy groups of Congos moving around complacently and without fear by the coastal towns where, in addition to finding abundant and always green vegetation, they are able to stay at a great distance away from the large cats, their only natural predators. Their 100% vegetarian diet includes a wide variety of fruits, flowers and a sprinkle of legumes here and there, always combined with large consumption of new tree growth and young leaves. Their favorites are two local varieties of Ficus plus the new growth and fruits of the Guava Trees (Psidium guajava) and the flowers and leaves of Copperwood tree (Bursera simaruba).

A fin de cuentas todo turista quiere ver congos en sus tour y todos los vislumbran como parte de su imagen ideal para esa nueva vida en el paraíso: Unos monitos cantando en el jardín de su casa en la playa.

En la montaña …sí, pero mucho mejor en la playa. Aunque se les puede encontrar a alturas de hasta 2000mt., los Congos tienen gran predilección por las tierras bajas y cálidas,

mostrando un especial favoritismo por los frondosos parches de bosque costeros. Por ello es tan común ver grandes y sanos grupos de Congos moverse con displicencia y sin miedos por las comunidades del litoral, donde junto con encontrar abundancia de vegetación siempre verde y posar para unas cuantas fotos, consiguen mantenerse lejos de los grandes felinos, sus únicos depredadores naturales. Su dieta 100% vegetariana incluye una amplia variedad de frutos, flores y unas cuantas leguminosas, siempre combinadas con una frecuente ingesta de brotes y hojas jóvenes de árboles, siendo sus preferidos dos variedades locales de ficus, junto a los brotes y frutos de los arboles de Guayaba (Psidium guajava) o las flores y hojas del Indio Desnudo (Bursera simaruba).

Only the adult males can emit those monumental howls. Next to a large guttural sac they have an enlarged Hyoid bone, a bone found on the frontal part of the neck very close to the vocal cords and just under the tongue which by being hollow and enlarged, amplifies about 20 times the original sound made by the vocal cords of the howler. However their language is not limited only to those loud screams; they have a varied vocal repertoire that includes diverse kinds of grunts, barks, whining, squawks, shrieking and even some soft purring between mother and child. Over 23 different vocalizations in total have been identified, each with a specific communicational and social function.

Solo los machos adultos pueden emitir esos grandiosos aullidos pues junto a una gran saco gutural, tienen muy ampliado el hueso Hioides, un hueso en la parte frontal del cuello, cerquita de las cuerdas vocales y justo por debajo de la lengua, que al ser hueco y ensanchado amplifica unas 20 veces el sonido original emitido por las cuerdas vocales del aullador.

Sin embargo, su lenguaje no se reduce solo a esos fuertes aullidos, pues cuentan con un muy variado repertorio vocal que incluye varias formas de gruñidos, ladridos, quejidos, graznidos, chillidos e incluso hasta unos suaves ronroneos entre madre e hijo. En total han sido identificadas más de 23 vocalizaciones distintas, cada una con una función comunicacional y social específica.

These peaceful primates live in groups of 10 to 20 individuals, they seldom have internal or inter-group conflicts, have a very low risk of falling prey to other animals, do not know scarcity of food and by simply reaching out with their hands they can enjoy a tasty, varied and abundant meal. Not too shabby for being a monkey, huh? And to round out a life without major problems, these shameless will rest or sleep on a branch at least 60% of its existence. What a life, right? To us humans their days may look not very stimulating but I assure you that in the animal kingdom there is not subsistence style more pura vida than this. 20

Estos tranquilos primates viven en grupos de 10 a 25 individuos, casi no tienen conflictos internos ni entre clanes, tienen un bajísimo riesgo de ser presa de otros animales, no conocen de escasez y con solo estirar la mano comen sabroso, variado y en abundancia. Nada mal para ser un mono ¿no? Y para redondear esa vida sin grandes problemas, estos desvergonzados se la pasarán descansando o durmiendo sobre una rama al menos un 60% de su existencia. Vaya vidita, ah? Puede que a los humanos nos parezca un día a día muy poco estimulante, pero les garantizo que en el reino animal no existe un estilo de subsistencia más pura vida que este.

hen talking about rural Guanacastecan culture, the civic festivities in the different towns and cities are the epicenter of the action. In these festivities the crème de la crème of the “sabanero” (cowboy) world come to meet with friends, show the best specimens of their cattle, the skills of the brave bull riders, the garbs of the countryside, the traditional music, the dances, etc. For the tourists, these fiestas turn out to be fun and one of the most entertaining and surprising experiences of their visit to Guanacaste. Normally these festivities are organized in every town and take place week after week in different communities of Guanacaste, with the majority of these fiestas concentrated within the months of December and April. Given that for the tourists it’s not easy to find these itinerant celebrations, visionary tourism and cattlemen entrepreneurs of Carrillo County decided to put them at their fingertips. Transforming their traditional ranch, Finca El Paso, into a great bullring, which becomes the meeting place of residents and tourists; they bring together all the elements that bring these fiestas to life. A fixed place, without seasonal limitations and within everyone’s reach, where month after month tremendous parties take place with all the traditional elements of a Guanacastecan celebration…plus several additional pleasant surprises. 22

uando de cultura rural guanacasteca se trata, los festejos cívicos de los pueblos y ciudades son el epicentro de la acción. En estas festividades se reúne la crema y nata del mundo sabanero a encontrarse con los amigos, exhibir los mejores ejemplares de su ganado, las habilidades de bravos montadores de toros, los vestimentas del campo, la música tradicional, los bailes, etc. Para los turistas en tanto, estas fiestas resultan todo un deleite y una de las experiencias que más entretienen y sorprenden en su visita a Guanacaste. These productions are very elaborate and well achieved. In conjunction with select bull riding exhibitions showing the best bulls of the area and brave groups of bull riders, one can also enjoy marimba concerts, traditional dances, Djs, runway shows, midnight “carnavales”, art exhibits, musical groups, contests (mechanical bull, ribbon races) as well as typical food and drink (…and the atypical too). These monthly events have become quite popular with the locals and the fortunate foreign residents and tourists who have been lucky enough to hear about these fiestas. Expanding on this desire, the owners of Finca El Paso have recently taken a new step forward by placing these events in the agenda of options at hotels and tour operators, thus offering easy access for visiting tourists to the area.

Nature: I like it but only the exotic part... A friend in Costa Rica talking on Skype with friends in another country… - Seriously, you have to come and visit Costa Rica. It’s a beautiful country and a cool place. You will fall in love with the nature here. It’s bursting with little animals and not just in the protected areas but everywhere. As a matter of fact just 10 minutes ago there was a family of Congo monkeys on the trees right by my house. As people say here, this country is “Pura Vida!” - Wow, that sounds amazing! We only see dogs, cats and pigeons here.

- Oh yes, Costa Rica is something else. Even right in the center of town one sees monkeys, iguanas, and a large variety of birds. - Sounds marvelous! The doorbell rings, the exterminator has arrived. - Hold on a second, I have to get the door. - Hi, you got here pretty quickly. - Yes sir, it’s our pleasure.Would you prefer that I start inside or should I do the outside first? - Start outside. I not only want you to spray here around the house, I also

want you to spray some 50 yards all around. I don’t want any bugs around my property. - Yes sir. I understand. Of course that is more expensive. Such an extensive fumigation costs triple. - I don’t care about the price. Use the strongest product you have. As I said, I don’t want a single bug near my house!!! Understand? -Yes sir, I got it. La Naturaleza me gusta pero me asusta… Un amigo en Costa Rica hablando por skype con unos amigos en otro país…. -En serio, tienen que venir a conocer Costa Rica. Es un país hermosísimo y súper buena nota. Les va a fascinar la naturaleza. Está lleno de animalitos y no solo en áreas protegidas sino en todos lados. De hecho hace solo 10 minutos, había una familia de monos congos en los arboles aquí afuera de la casa. Como se dice acá, este es un país ‘Pura vida!’ -Uyy, que lindo. Acá en nuestra ciudad lo único que vemos son perros, gatos y palomas… -Siiii, Costa Rica es otra cosa. Incluso en medio de un pueblo uno ve monos, ardillas, mapaches, iguanas y muchas aves distintas.

-Wow, suena maravilloso. Suena el timbre. - Esperen un segundo.Voy a atender la puerta. El muchacho de la fumigación ha llegado. -Hola, vinieron bastante rápido. - Si señor, con mucho gusto. ¿Quiere que comience por dentro o fumigo por fuera primero? -Empiece por fuera primero. Quiero no solo aquí alrededor de la casa, sino que también fumigue unos 50 mts a la redonda. No quiero ningún bicho alrededor de mi propiedad.

-Si señor, entendido. Claro que eso es más caro. Una fumigación tan extensa le sale el triple. -No me importa el precio. Use el producto más fuerte que tengan. A bittersweet back-to-home.

‘In the laughter of a child, the morning sun, in the air that clean and makes more blue (blissful) the soul.’ Fidel Gamboa.

Fimpossible or the many fans of the band, Malpais, it is not to become nostalgic while listening to their latest album. Fans, friends, family and band members were stunned at the sudden passing of the singer/songwriter/ guitarist/flautist of this very popular Costa Rican group, Fidel Gamboa, late last August. After the shock subsided a bit, the rest of the band decided to pay tribute to their fallen leader, which they did, with the help of many other notable musicians, at the National Stadium to an emotional sold-out audience. At this time, the band also discussed releasing one more album, in honor and tribute to their friend and to thank their loyal fans. The decision was an easy one. The new album, titled “Volver a Casa”, (Back to home) is a mosaic of musical pieces that span the history of the band and Fidel’s careers. The second song on the album, “El Puente” (The bridge), for example, was written in 2002 and was meant to be included in the band’s first album, Uno but was shelved at the last minute; a gem that was tucked away has now reemerged nearly a decade later. One of several Fidel’s side projects involved participating in music for movie soundtracks and some of the songs on “Volver a Casa” are scores of his that appeared in various films. The opening song “El Retorno” (Return) was written for the Luciano Capelli conservation-conscious documentary “Se quema el cielo” (The sky is burning). 28

Para los muchos admiradores del grupo Malpaís, es imposible no volverse nostálgico al escuchar su

último disco. Fanáticos, amigos, familiares y los propios miembros de la banda quedaron perplejos y sacudidos frente a la repentina muerte de Fidel Gamboa, compositor, cantante, guitarrista y flautista de este popular grupo costarricense. Ya pasado el shock inicial pero con el dolor aún a flor de piel, sus compañeros de banda y amigos de toda una vida, decidieron rendirle tributo a la partida de su líder, cosa que hicieron en el Estadio Nacional con un lleno absoluto, el aporte de otros notables músicos y mucha emotividad flotando en el aire. Ese día la banda se comprometió a sacar un disco más como forma justa de honrar a su gran amigo y agradecer de paso a sus fieles seguidores. La decisión era fácil, casi ineludible. Y así nació ‘Volver a Casa’, un pulcro mosaico musical que recorre la historia de la banda y otros trabajos de Fidel. Por ejemplo la segunda canción, ‘El Puente’ fue escrita el 2002 con la intensión de incluirla en ‘Uno’, primer álbum de Malpaís, pero quedó relegada a última hora y oculta por años. Ahora, esta joya compuesta por Fidel hace una década, ha emergido de su largo silencio.

En sus frecuentes proyectos paralelos, Fidel también aportó su música y su participación en varios films, siendo hoy esas imágenes y sonidos, vivos testimonios de un Fidel multifacético y fecundo. La canción de apertura, ‘El Retorno’ fue escrita para ‘Se Quema el cielo’, documental de Luciano Capelli sobre la belleza y fragilidad del bosque seco tropical de Guanacaste.

El grupo también descubrió canciones inéditas grabadas por Fidel secretamente en su estudio; canciones que solo Fidel conocía. Una de las gemas que salió de las sombras fue ‘A contraluz’, curiosamente compuesta en un piano, instrumento que Fidel no solía usar.

The band discovered songs written and recorded in his studio by Fidel that none of them had ever known about. One surprising gem they discovered was “A contraluz” (Backlighting) composed at the piano, a musical instrument Fidel did not usually employ. The album was coproduced by Jaime Gamboa and Luciano Capelli in what could only have been a very emotional labor of love. The presentation of the song list, the linear notes and art design for the album collectively do a wonderful job of juxtaposing this band’s storied history. Fidel was a poet, a clever storyteller, with subtle messages woven into his tales. He was a visual writer, using physical objects in his lyrics and making it easy for the listener to imagine the subjects of his songs. The last known song Fidel wrote and directed in the studio is titled “Vuela sobre la ciudad” (Fly over the city), a gentle hymn for peace, a touching end to an incredible career that ended much too soon.

El álbum fue coproducido por Luciano Capelli y Jaime Gamboa, su hermano, en lo que probablemente fue una emotiva labor de cariño y remembranzas. Fidel fue un poeta, un narrador inteligente, fértil en mensajes sutilmente tejidos entre sus cuentos. Fue un escritor visual que ponía objetos físicos en sus letras a fin de guiar la imaginación del oyente hacia los paisajes visualizados por el al componer. La última canción que Fidel Gamboa escribió y arreglo en un estudio fue ‘Vuela sobre la ciudad’, un cálido himno de paz. Un toque final conmovedor de alguien que decidió volver a casa demasiado pronto, pero que antes de irse se encargó de dejarnos mucho más azul el alma.

Sloths have their hair full of sushi !!! Sloths live such a slow and carefree life that large colonies of algae grow on their fur. In a unique symbiotic relationship in the animal kingdom, sloths can have two or even three varieties of algae growing in their thick fur. Even though sloths are not aware of its benefits, these algae help in the sloth’s camouflage efforts as they have light green coloration during the rainy season, which changes to a greyish green during the dry season. For the algae there could not be a more hospitable host since the sloth rarely cleans itself, allowing the algae to grow in peace and providing protection and the necessary humidity to survive long periods without rain. But it’s not only algae that take shelter on the worry-free sloths. Larvae, cocoons and adults of 9 types of nocturnal butterflies, 4 species of small beetles and six varieties of parasites, each of these in numbers ranging from tens to even hundreds, find a home in the sloths fur.

En una simbiosis única del reino animal, el perezoso tiene dos o hasta tres variedades de algas creciendo entre su tupido pelaje. Aunque el perezoso no lo entienda, estas algas le ayudan mucho a mejorar su camuflaje, pues

son de un intenso verde claro en temporada lluviosa cambiando a un color verde-grisáceo durante la temporada seca. Para el alga, no podría haber un huésped más hospitalario, ya que el perezoso rara vez se asea, dejándolas crecer en paz y proveyendo el resguardo y la humedad necesarias para sobrevivir largos periodos sin lluvia. Pero no solo algas hospedan los despreocupados perezosos, pues también se alojan en el pelaje larvas, crisálidas y adultos de nueve tipos de mariposas nocturnas, cuatro especies de pequeños escarabajos y seis variedades de parásitos, cada una en cantidades de decenas o hasta cientos.

M usic is a multisensory emotional experience, one that touches our soul and makes our body vibrate.

As we listen to it we can easily journey to other places and even skip back in time by simply closing our eyes. It nourishes the spirit and it’s one of the most sublime presents to humanity. Learning to play an instrument is also a great tool for intellectual and psychomotor growth as the musical execution unleashes an intense cerebral activity and establishes a series of permanent relationships among the areas of the brain that normally do not interact with each other. The learning and execution of music is a challenging dare that unleashes an intricate process between the mind and the body in which they work as a team. Combining knowledge with emotions, movements with consciousness, reality with abstraction, and concentration with expression, music awakens the soul. The influence of a musical instrument on children is particularly beneficial allowing them to extend their periods of concentration and expand the reach of their memory and the coordination between their body and their thoughts. It also reinforces the value of individuality while demonstrating the beauty of teamwork. In addition, learning a musical instrument can have a powerful effect on the self-esteem of youth. As a result of this, a musical education is vital in academic plans starting at the pre-school level. Such education provides new modes of self expression for the child, helping them learn to collaborate with others, have more awareness of their surroundings and to expand their relationships world. These benefits continue as the child grows and their expertise advances. Each age brings its own set of benefits and each level of musical attainment opens the door for new growth and developmental opportunities. Learning music teaches perseverance, methodology, coordination, abstraction, memory, attention to detail, the value of training and the fruit of teamwork. But it also teaches about feelings, emotions and numerous other nourishing values. Hence the reason for the title of this article. The music nurtures. We must keep sowing music… 32
