s interesante ver como el disfrute de un viaje comienza antes de siquiera subirse al avión: La gente aquejada por estrés mejora su estado de ánimo desde el mismo instante en que toman la decisión de “regalarse unas buenas vacaciones”.

El entusiasmo se vuelve parte de la conversación cotidiana con amigos, en el trabajo y con la familia y hasta los niveles hormonales cambian en el cuerpo, disparándose la producción de serotoninas y endorfinas y con ello, las sensaciones de alegría y positivismo frente a la vida.

De hecho las vacaciones siguen dando alegrías una vez que hemos regresado a casa, al relatar nuestras experiencias a los amigos o repasando las fotos. Y nos pueden seguir alegrando por años con tan solo recordar las situaciones anecdóticas o los personajes más pintorescos de nuestros viajes.

Un viaje vacacional es siempre la oportunidad perfecta para olvidarse del tedio de la rutina diaria, del estrés y de los problemas cotidianos que nos aquejan a la gran mayoría de los mortales.

unque la lista anterior incluye campos de acción muy disímiles entre sí, en realidad sólo menciona unos pocos de los beneficios que genera la Cámara de Turismo de Guanacaste para esta provincia.

Esta agrupación compuesta por empresas y profesionales del mundo del turismo o ligados al turismo, nació hace 19 años buscando organizar al sector turístico y guiar por un mejor camino el desarrollo de esta industria.

Sin embargo con el tiempo y ante la ausencia de otras organizaciones que hablaran con solidez en favor de los grandes temas de Guanacaste, la Cámara fue asumiendo un rol más amplio, trabajando no solo a favor de la industria vacacional sino a favor de todo quien viva o haga negocios en la provincia.

Gracias a un trabajo dedicado y a una importante inversión en horas de trabajo por parte de cada miembro de la directiva y de las distintas comisiones, la cámara logra actuar como un ente catalizador de múltiples beneficios para la provincia, un puente de comunicación y acuerdo entre el gobierno central, sus diferentes ministerios, las municipalidades de la provincia, el ICT (Inst. Costarricense de Turismo), universidades, empresas de servicios públicos, empresas privadas y diversas organizaciones comunales, creando enlaces que con frecuencia terminan en soluciones de calidad y larga duración.

Mejores carreteras, aeropuerto nuevo y gestión de nuevos vuelos, decenas de cursos del INA (Inst. Nacional de Aprendizaje), apertura de nuevas carreras universitarias, mejores estrategias de seguridad e incremento del número de policías destinados a Guanacaste, atracción de nuevas empresas y mejores fuentes de empleo al área, son todos beneficios concretos en favor de la provincia y en todos ellos ha colaborado la Cámara.

Guanacaste likes to have better roads...

A

lthough the preceding list includes a wide diversity of fields, it actually mentions only a few of the benefits that are generated for the province by the Guanacaste Chamber of Tourism.

This group composed by businesses and professionals in the tourist field or related to tourism, was born 19 years ago with the mission to organize the tourism sector and to guide the development of the industry on a better path.

However, with time and faced with the absence of other organizations that spoke firmly in favor of the subjects important for Guanacaste, the Chamber began to assume a more ample role, not only in favor of the vacation industry but also in favor of everyone who lives or does business in the province.

Thanks to the dedication and time invested by the members of the board of directors and the different committees, the chamber is able to act as a catalyzer of multiple benefits for the province.

This role as a communication and outreach bridge linking the central government, their different Ministries, the municipalities of the province, the ICT (Costa Rican Tourism Institute), the universities, public services, private business and a diversity of community organizations, creates links that frequently leads to quality, long term solutions.

Better roads, a new airport and negotiation of new flights, dozens of courses given by INA (National Learning Institute), new university majors, better security strategies, an increase in the number of police officers assigned to Guanacaste, attraction of new business and better employment sources in the area; these all are concrete benefits in favor of the province and the Chamber has been an active collaborator on all of them.

Todos estos frutos y una larga lista de otros logros, llevan el sello silencioso de Caturgua presente en algún eslabón de la cadena o con frecuencia, presente en cada uno de los eslabones de desarrollo.

Sostenibilidad, cultura, manejo de la basura, mercadeo provincial, telecomunicaciones o responsabilidad social empresarial, son otros de los campos de acción de esta organización, un trabajo con visión de largo plazo centrado en construir un mejor Guanacaste presente y futuro.

All these results and a long list of other achievements carry the silent seal of Caturgua present in some link of the chain or frequently present in all of the links of development.

Además la cámara es una de las voces provinciales más valoradas en el valle central y por años esa capacidad de influencia ha sido clave en la defensa de los intereses provinciales y en la inclusión de los temas de la provincia en la agenda nacional.

Hoy, preparándose para cumplir 2 décadas de trabajo por Guanacaste, la cámara ha reestructurado su directiva integrando a muchos profesionales jóvenes que están inyectando nuevas energías, el deseo de trabajar más en equipo con los afiliados y con ganas de abrirse a una mayor comunicación con la ciudadanía.

Si usted es empresario en Guanacaste o proveedor de empresas del área, le recomendamos afiliarse a CATURGUA, pues junto con apoyar el trabajo que la cámara hace en favor de toda la provincia, usted también le dará a su empresa una oportunidad para extender su red de negocios, estar más al día con las noticias del sector, los nuevos proyectos en estudio o los temas más frescos de la agenda provincial, así como recibir las proyecciones, estadísticas y noticias que envían regularmente a sus afiliados.

In addition, the chamber is one of the province’s voices more highly valued in the central valley and through the years this influential capability has been key in the defense of the provincial interests and the inclusion of the province issues in the national agenda.

As it gets ready to reach 2 decades working for Guanacaste, the chamber has restructured its board of directors integrating young professionals who are injecting new energy, the desire to work more closely with its members and the desire to become more open to better communication with the public.

If you are a businessman in Guanacaste or a supplier to businesses in the area, we recommend you to become a member of CATURGUA. In addition to supporting the work that they do on behalf of the entire province, you will also give your business an opportunity to stay up to date on the latest events; new projects under consideration; the newest items in the agenda of the province; as well as receiving projections, statistics or news that are sent regularly to the membership.

The chamber is open to businesses of all sizes, starting with membership dues as low as $14 a month. All the businesses, regardless of size, have equal voice and vote and in contrast to other large chambers, the small businesses also have a role in the board of directors, where 2 important positions are occupied by representatives of small business with less than 10 employees.

Ofrece un educativo y colorido paseo turístico, salva cientos de vidas al año, aporta en la investigación de la fauna nacional y presta valiosos servicios ambientales al país.

Sin embargo, por las razones equivocadas, este imprescindible Centro de Rescate y Educación es hoy una especie en peligro.

Es el único refugio de Guanacaste que acoge y brinda

tratamiento médico y rehabilitación a los animales silvestres rescatados o decomisados por el MINAE, al igual que a muchos otros animales accidentados traídos por particulares.

Buscando que los rescatados tengan un rápido retorno a su entorno natural, el equipo de Monkey Park busca tratarlos y reinsertarlos al ambiente ojalá antes de 72 horas. Si es algo grave, se les trata y deja en aislamiento y/o rehabilitación hasta que se recuperen plenamente, mientras que aquellos que no logran la mejoría total, se quedan a vivir en el sitio, donde se les provee de refugio, comida y los cuidados especiales que requieran.

Esta área de huéspedes permanentes está abierta a los visitantes y la recomendamos como una excelente actividad de contacto animal, pues ofrece la inusual oportunidad para ver de cerca unas 30 especies de fauna nativa, entre reptiles, aves y mamíferos, complementado además con un mariposario con cerca de 20 variedades.

A shelter in danger of extinction Monkey Park offers an educational and colorful tour, saves hundreds of lives a year, contributes to the research of the national fauna and provides valuable environmental services to the country.

Even so, for the wrong reasons, this indispensable Rescue and Educational Center is today an endangered species.

t’s the only shelter in Guanacaste that receives and offers medical treatment and rehabilitation to the wild animals that are either rescued or confiscated by the MINAE, and also to many other hurt animals brought in by private individuals.

In an attempt to be able to quickly return the rescued animals to their natural habitat, the Monkey Park team strives to treat and reinsert them whenever possible in less than 72 hours. If the injury is serious, the animals are given treatment and kept in isolation or rehabilitated until fully recovered. Those that do not attain a full recuperation remain living in the park where they receive shelter, food and the special care they may require.

This permanent guest area is open to visitors and we recommend it as an excellent animal contact activity since it offers the unusual opportunity of close up observation of nearly 30 species of local fauna, including reptiles, birds and mammals complimented also by a butterfly area with around 20 different varieties.

More than a zoo, the exhibition area of the Monkey Park is an animal rehabilitation hotel.

Por fuera parecen jaulas comunes pero por dentro están llenas de detalles, con ambientes cuidadosamente acondicionados a las necesidades de cada especie, diseñadas por expertos en comportamiento animal y equipados con dispositivos de vanguardia que les estimulan física y mentalmente, a la vez que les permiten practicar las destrezas que los animales necesitarán para poder retornar a la naturaleza.

On first look the animals appear to be housed in normal cages but when one looks closer they are full of details inside with environments carefully conditioned to the needs of each species. They are designed by experts in animal behavior and equipped with cutting edge devices that stimulate the animals physically and mentally while also allowing them to practice the skills needed to return to their natural habitat.

Sin embargo, a pesar del gran trabajo que hacen, del aumento de animales acogidos, de los altos costos que enfrentan y del beneficio que prestan al MINAE (Ministerio de Ambiente y Energía), este centro no recibe ningún aporte financiero por parte del MINAE ni de ningún otro organismo de gobierno.

However, despite the great job they do, the increase in the number of rescued animals, the high costs they face and the essential service they provide for the MINAE (Ministry of Environment and Energy), this center receives no financial contribution from the MINAE or from any other government entity.

Por años han logrado mantenerse en pie gracias al trabajo voluntario de sus directores y de gran parte del personal y también gracias a la ayuda ocasional de ONGs extranjeras.

For years they have managed to remain afloat thanks to the fact that the directors and a large portion of their working team provide their services for free and also thanks to the occasional help of foreign nongovernmental organizations.

Sin embargo, sus costos en medicinas, alimentos y equipamiento son elevados y hoy los esfuerzos ya no alcanzan. En unos meses, podrían tener que cerrar.

Even so, those efforts are no longer enough to remain in operation and in a few months, they might have to close.

Their only source of income are sporadic donations by private parties and the $10 entrance fee that each visitor pays.

The visitors are scarce however, since the park is a non-profit organization and cannot pay the expected commissions to hotels and tour operators, that would otherwise bring in more tourists. This exclusion is clearly unfair as much for the park as for tourists who miss a good educational and photo opportunity.

In 10 years living in Guanacaste I had never observed such animal diversity in a single day. As a matter of fact, that day we visited Monkey Park, I saw at least 5 species that I had not been able to see in an entire decade.

Sus únicas fuentes de ingreso son esporádicas donaciones de particulares y las entradas de $10 que paga cada visitante. Sin embargo los visitantes son escasos, pues al ser una fundación sin fines de lucro, no pueden pagar comisiones y por ende, un buen número de hoteles y tour operadores simplemente les excluyen de su oferta a sus clientes.

Una exclusión sin duda injusta tanto para el parque como para los turistas, que se pierden de una buena oportunidad educativa y fotográfica.

En 10 años en Guanacaste, nunca había visto tanta diversidad animal en un solo día. De hecho, ese día vi al menos 5 especies que en una década no había logrado ver.

Tanto por su valor como experiencia turística, pero en especial por el valor ambiental y educativo de este centro de rescate, Monkey Park es un lugar necesario para Guanacaste y no podemos dejar de apoyarlo.

También invitamos a filántropos y empresas comprometidas con el medioambiente, a hacer un donativo o mejor aún, establecer un plan de patrocinio mensual, como por ejemplo, patrocinar mensualmente uno de los habitáculos de rehabilitación. Y por supuesto manos trabajadoras son muy bienvenidas, así que puertas abiertas a los voluntarios que quieran aportar unas horas al mes.

Monkey Park is a necessary facility in Guanacaste both for the tourist experience value and for the environmental and educational services of this shelter. We cannot help but support it.

How? Visiting and

recommending it to everyone you know is the first way to support it.You will be recommending a good experience and helping a good cause at the same time. The entrance fee is only $10 but making a complimentary additional donation is also welcome. If you are in the tourist industry we invite you to reinclude the site in the recommendations you make to your guests.

We also ask philanthropists and businesses committed to the environment, to make a donation or even better, to establish a monthly sponsorship plan (i.e food for 1 rehabilitating habitat module).

Of course, helping hands are also welcomed. Doors are open to volunteers who want to collaborate some hours each month.

LLeonora a naturaleza le dio a un fenotipo y

Alta, delgada, bonita, simpática y para colmo… súper rubia!

una personalidad única que desde temprana edad le marcaron el rumbo a seguir. Ella agregó esfuerzo y profesionalismo y con ese conjunto ganador logró desarrollar una brillante carrera como top model de fama global, siendo catalogada por muchos como “la tica más bella de todos los tiempos.”

Nacida en Santa Ana, cuando Santa Ana era casi puro campo y su aire tan puro como su gente, Leo trae a la naturaleza en sus venas.

Descubierta como modelo a los 15 años… empezó a trabajar jovencita y nunca más se detuvo.

Hoy iniciando sus ‘treintas’, lo clásico sería que como la gran mayoría de las modelos, Leonora estuviese preparándose para iniciar su retiro de las pasarelas, lista para disfrutar el resto de sus años rodeada de todas las bondades que la vida pueda ofrecer.

Pero sucede que a Leonora además le tocó un cerebro funcional e hiperactivo, un corazón bien puesto y una familia inquieta y estimulante, por lo que era genéticamente improbable que su vida alguna vez se amoldara a cualquier tipo de cliché.

special personality, which from an early age marked a path for her to follow.

She added effort and professionalism, and this winning combination has led her to achieve a brilliant career as a world famous top model, recognized by many as “the most beautiful Tica ever”.

She was born in Santa Ana in the times when Santa Ana was practically just back woods and its air was as pure as it’s people. Discovered as a model when she was 15, she started to work young and never stopped.

As she starts her “thirties”, the usual thing would be that Leonora would be preparing to start her retirement from the runways as most models would do, ready to enjoy the rest of her years surrounded by all the benefits that life might offer her.

However, it so happens that Leonora also has a functional and hyperactive brain, a heart very well placed and a supportive and stimulating family. These are the reasons why it would be genetically improbable that her life could at any time be molded by any type of cliché.

Empresaria multi-rubros, productora de eventos, presentadora de TV, activista pro-sensatez social, amante empedernida de la naturaleza, crítica sagaz, hábil karateca y entusiasta ‘mejenguera’…son solo algunas de sus múltiples facetas.

Equally grateful for her physical and intellectual attributes, Leonora has managed to be not only a celebrity of global fame but also she has given herself the time to do (...and to be) many other things.

Some of her multiple facets include being an entrepreneur in several areas, producer of events, TV presenter, environmental and social activist, dedicated nature lover, shrewd critic, skillful at martial arts and an enthusiastic soccer player.

She is an uncomplicated woman very much in touch with reality, with no problem spending a week modeling in Europe for Dior, Loeve, Dolce & Gabbana or Chanel and the following week in her country, in jeans and t-shirt, supporting a civil rights march or the fight against shark finning.

Ya más alejada del glamour de Milán o París, quisimos redescubrir como es esta Leonora post-pasarelas. ¿En que pasos anda Leonora Jiménez hoy?

“Estoy viviendo un periodo de cambio, ya dejando atrás mi carrera de modelo y empezando una vida totalmente nueva.

Luego de una década radicada en Europa, ahora estoy pasando poco tiempo allá y mucho más en mi país.

Hace un par de años empecé a dar un giro a mi vida cuando sin buscarlo me fui involucrando en espacios empresariales ligados a la moda y esa nueva experiencia me sedujo muchísimo.”

Now more distanced from the glamour of Milan or Paris we wanted to rediscover who is this post runway Leonora.

What are you up to these days, Leonora?

“I’m living through a period of change, leaving behind my career as a model and beginning a completely new life. Following a decade based in Europe, now I’m spending little time there and much more in my country. A couple of years ago I started to implement a twist in my life when, without really seeking it, I started getting involved in the world of entrepreneurship associated with fashion and I found this new experience very alluring.“ Foto: Diego Mejías

“En ese momento ya tenía claro que casi era tiempo para dejar el modelaje y aquel contacto con la producción y el desarrollo empresarial me dio una nueva visión para el futuro, que vino acompañada del deseo de crear una red de negocios relacionados con la moda aquí en Costa Rica.

Al tiempo nació Traffic, una revista de modas y Revista Welcome, una revista de turismo. También se consolidó el proyecto de una tienda Tiffi, del Allure Spa y Allure Salón de Belleza, y también de esa nueva visión nació la idea de hacer el Fashion Week San José. Todo esto como conjunto, son cosas que me permiten seguir conectada a la moda y aportar con nuevos engranajes al desarrollo de esta industria en nuestro país.

Afortunadamente también se me han abierto nuevas ventanas para aportar más en causas sociales y medioambientales, que para mi son un motor y un propósito de vida. El estar más en el país me permite estar mucho más conectada con el día a día de los diferentes proyectos que estoy apoyando.”

“The time came when I realized it was almost time to leave modeling behind. That contact with the production and the entrepreneur development provided a new vision for the future which came coupled with the desire to create a business network related to fashion here in Costa Rica.

Some time later, Traffic, a fashion magazine and then Welcome Magazine, about tourism, saw the light. A store project, Tiffi was also consolidated, as were the projects of Allure Spa and Allure Beauty Salon. Also from this new vision the idea was born to hold Fashion Week San Jose. All this as a conglomerate are things that allow me to continue connected to the fashion world and to contribute with new links to the development of this industry in our country.

Fortunately more windows have also opened to me to make a contribution to social and environmental causes, which are a motor and a purpose in my life. By spending more time in Costa Rica I’m able to stay more closely connected with the day to day of the different projects that I’m backing.”

Esto de entrar al mundo empresarial y hacerlo con varias empresas simultáneamente… ¿Tiene Leonora algo que probarle al mundo?

(Risas) “Bueno, como imaginarás, los ingresos por modelaje no son perpetuos así que mi incursión empresarial nace con objetivos financieros de largo plazo. Luego, decido que quiero hacer empresa de una forma que aporte complementos a la industria que conozco mejor, pero quería hacerlo desde un ángulo diferente, aportando productos y servicios necesarios para la industria nacional.

Sin embargo, ahora que lo mencionas, creo que si influye el deseo subconsciente por alejarme de los estigmas y prejuicios gratuitos que como modelo naturalmente una hereda. Rubia-tonta, frívola, materialista, aprovechada, etc, son apelativos que me molestan un poco porque no soy así y nunca lo seré.

Respeto mis capacidades intelectuales y mis valores internos más que a mi aspecto externo. La piel un día se va a arrugar. La mente en cambio continúa su expansión.”

This about entering full force into the business world and doing it with several businesses simultaneously...

Does Leonora has something to prove to the world?

(Laughter) “Well, as you can imagine, the income from modeling is not perpetual so my entrepreneurial incursion springs from long-term financial objectives. Then I decided that I want to have businesses that compliment the industry that I know best. However I wanted to do it from a different angle, contributing products and services necessary for the national industry.

Nevertheless, and now that you mentioned it, I do believe that the subconscious desire to distance myself from the stigma and gratuitous prejudices that as a model one inherits, does have an influence. Blonde- dumb, frivolous materialistic, taking advantage of my background, etc. are names that somewhat bother me because it’s not who I am nor who I ever will be.

I respect my intellectual capacity and my internal values more than my external looks. The skin will become wrinkled one day. The mind however, continues its expansion.”

You started your career very young. In the midst of such fame, glamour and flattering, what does a 15-year-old girl do to not become totally egocentric?

Empezaste tu carrera bien jovencita. Entre tanta fama, glamour y halagos, ¿Como hace una niña de 15 años para no volverse totalmente egocéntrica?

“Por supuesto que existe ese riesgo y yo no estuve ajena a él. Al principio es muy fácil marearse, creerse el cuento y perder tu yo verdadero.

Pero yo tuve una gran ventaja a mi favor: Una familia sabia y de muy buenos valores, un cable a tierra siempre presente en mi vida. En esos primeros años de inmadurez, cada vez que empecé a perder la perspectiva, mi familia siempre me trajo de vuelta, recordándome lo que es realmente importante en la vida.” ¿Qué ves hoy frente al espejo y que veías hace 5 o 10 años atrás?

“Hoy veo a la figura de la modelo media erosionadilla (risas) y claro que hay un cierto luto por verla partir, pero al mismo tiempo siento alegría al ver resurgir a mi yo original, que durante años estuvo oculto bajo capas de maquillaje y lentejuelas.

El estar ahora algo más alejada del ojo público, me ha permitido salirme un poco de mi propio molde y sentirme más dueña de mi y mis decisiones.” ¿Y como es esta nueva Leo que aparece al romperse el molde?

“Me siento muy renovada, mucho más libre y con un montón de nuevas ganas. Más dueña de mi misma y motivada por estos nuevos desafíos.

Apreciaré siempre esa etapa como modelo pues me nutrió mucho, me abrió muchas puertas, me enseñó un alto sentido de responsabilidad y también porque fue lo que permitió que mi voz sirviera más en favor de los movimientos sociales y ambientales en que he podido ayudar.”

“Of course that risk exists and I was not exempted from it. At first it was very easy to become dazzled, to believe the stories and loose track of my real self.

But I had a great advantage in my favor: A wise family with very good values, a cable connecting me to ground, always present in my life. During those first immature years, anytime I would start to lose my perspective, my family always brought me back, reminding me what the really important things in life are.”

What do you see in the mirror today and what did you see some 5-10 years ago?

“Today I see the figure of the model that is becoming a little worn out (laughter) and of course there is a certain sadness to see her go.

But at the same time I also feel happiness at seeing the resurgence of my original self who during many years was covered under layers of make up and sequins.

Distancing myself some from the public eye has allowed me to come out a little from my own mold and feel more in control of my own person and of my decisions.”

And how is this new Leo that appears when the mold breaks?

“I feel renewed, much freer and with tons of new motivation. More in charge of myself and motivated by these new challenges.

I will always cherish this period as a model as it nourished me abundantly, it opened many doors and taught me a high degree of responsibility.

It’s also what made it possible for my voice to be heard and be more useful in favor of the movements that I have been able to help.”

¿Que te impulsa a salir de tu zona de confort para dedicar tiempo, corazón y cabeza a apoyar causas sociales y ambientales?

“Yo creo que todos tenemos un rol como agentes de cambio y creo que uno debe actuar en favor de lo que cree justo y correcto y también de manifestarse en contra de lo que cree incorrecto.” ¿Y de donde nace esa sensibilidad?

“Vengo de una familia de campo.

He visto injusticias, abusos sociales, económicos y ambientales y esas son experiencias que construyen conciencia.

Te enseñan a querer ver las cosas desde varios ángulos y a querer ayudar a aquellos que nadie quiere ayudar o a los que no tienen voz para defenderse.”

What moves you to step out of your comfort zone to dedicate more time, heart and head to support social and environmental causes?

“I believe everyone has a role as agents of change and I also believe that one must act for that which one believes to be just and correct.

And also to express oneself against that which one considers to be incorrect.”

And what is the source of that sensibility?

“I come from a country family. I have seen injustices; social, economic and environmental abuses and those are experiences that build one’s consciousness. They teach you to want to look at things from several angles and to want to help those that nobody wants to help or those that have no voice to defend themselves.”

Skeptical people like me will say that many famous people do activism as a personal marketing tool. What is your opinion about this?

“I think that...it’s true! There is a lot of that; people who lend their face but go no further.

Los mal pensados diremos que muchos famosos hacen activismo como marketing personal. ¿Qué opinas vos de eso?

“Pienso que…es cierto! Hay mucho de eso.

Gente que pone su rostro pero no pasa de ahí.

Yo no entro en ese juego. Siempre parto por un trabajo de campo, de reconocimiento de los problemas en terreno y francamente me siento mucho más a gusto cooperando en temas de planeación y estrategia; trabajando más tras bambalinas que frente a las cámaras, aunque es inevitable que en algún punto me pidan aprovechar al personaje público para extender la llegada de los mensajes. Eso lo entiendo y lo hago con gusto si así me lo piden.”

I don’t play that game. I always start from field work, recognition of the problems where they occur and frankly, I feel much more comfortable cooperating with the planning and strategic aspects: mostly behind the scenes rather than in front of the cameras, although it’s inevitable that at some point I’m asked to take advantage of the public figure to extend the reach of the messages.

This I understand and gladly agree if I’m asked.”

Have there been errors and mistakes in your life?

“Ufff…montones. He cometido errores de actitud y también de decisiones. En algún momento he sido arrogante y hasta el día de hoy me desconozco al leer algunas declaraciones que hice siendo más joven. Fracasos a nivel profesional también, siendo el más rotundo el show de TV ‘Central American Top Model’ que hice los años 2007 y 2008. “

“Ufff...plenty. I have made mistakes of attitude and also of decisions. At times I have been arrogant and even today I can’t recognize myself when I read some statements that I made when I was much younger. Failures on a professional level also, the biggest being the TV show “Central American Top Model” that I did in 2007 and 2008.”

De todo lo que has hecho hasta ahora. ¿Que te ha hecho sentir más plena?

Of everything you have done so far: What has made you feel more fulfilled?

“Cada etapa de mi vida me ha traído alegrías y logros, pero hoy me tiene muy orgullosa un tipo de logro que desconocía: El poder saber que hoy más de 30 familias progresan gracias a su trabajo en mis empresas. Eso es algo que me llena de orgullo.”

“Each stage of my life has brought me happiness and achievements, but today I’m very proud of a type of achievement that I had not experienced: Knowing that today more than 30 families are getting ahead due to their jobs in my businesses.

This is something that fills me up with pride.”

Seguramente usted ya sabe del problema de la contaminación marina, pero ¿sabía usted que los humanos desde hace 6 décadas también hemos venido dejando basura flotando en el espacio?

o bueno es que 2 grandes mentes han decidido tomar las riendas en estos problemas: El joven estudiante de ingeniería Boyan Slat con un interesante proyecto para sacar la basura de los océanos y el admirable físico Franklin Chang, quien planea retirar toda la chatarra cósmica que orbita nuestro planeta.

Aunque Boyan y don Franklin no se conocen aún, ambos comparten una gran responsabilidad medioambiental y la visión de pensar en grande.

Boyan, desde su acuática Holanda natal, tiene un osado plan que incluye la fabricación de grandes manta rayas mecánicas para filtrar a gran escala la basura presente en los mares.

En tanto al otro lado del océano, aquí desde Guanacaste, el Dr. Chang está desarrollando la osada idea de un recolector de basura espacial de bajo costo, movido por sus también innovadores cohetes de plasma.

he good news is that 2 great minds have decided to take charge of these problems: Boyan Slat, a young engineering student with an interesting project to remove the garbage from the oceans, and the admirable physicist Franklin Chang, who plans to remove all the cosmic junk that is orbiting our planet.

Even though Boyan and Dr. Chang have not met yet, both share a great environmental responsibility and the vision to think on big terms.

Boyan, from his aquatic natal Holland, has a daring plan that includes the building of large mechanical manta rays to filter the garbage present in the oceans on a large scale.

While on the other side of the ocean, from right here in Guanacaste, Dr. Chang is also developing a ground breaking idea of a space garbage collector of low cost, propelled by his also innovative plasma rockets.

Thanks to the technologies and materials now in existence or in development, these 2 ideas that sound like science fiction are actually feasible projects already in an advanced planning stage. Because of the enormity of these utopias and the global aspects of the solutions sought, we wanted to honor these ideas and share them with you.

Tal vez usted ha escuchado de las mal llamadas “islas de plástico”, que resultaron no ser islas flotantes sino 5 grandes áreas de los océanos donde el choque de corrientes marinas (giros) causa megaremolinos, los cuales han capturado y acumulado desechos no degradables en una densidad cientos de veces mayor a la del “nivel normal de plástico” en los océanos actuales.

No se trataba de islas compactas de plástico flotante, pero eso poco importa: La cantidad de plástico en los mares es un PROBLEMA GIGANTE para la salud oceánica y un riesgo igual de grande para el bienestar de la humanidad presente y futura.

Ocean

Gracias a las tecnologías y materiales actuales o en desarrollo, estas 2 ideas que parecen de cienciaficción, son en realidad proyectos totalmente factibles y bastante avanzados en su planeación.

Por lo gigantesco de estas utopías y lo global de las soluciones buscadas…quisimos honrar estas ideas y compartirlas con ustedes.

You might have heard of the misnamed “islands of plastic” which turned out not to be floating islands at all. Instead, they are 5 huge areas in the sea where the meeting of marine currents create “swirls” that cause mega-whirlpools. These have captured and accumulated non biodegradable trash in a density hundreds of times larger than the “normal present day level of plastic” in the oceans.

It was not compact islands of floating plastic, but that is irrelevant: The amount of plastic in the oceans is a GIGANTIC PROBLEM to the health of the oceans and a risk of equal importance for the well being of humanity now and in the future.

Afortunadamente, un joven soñador tuvo una visión que pronto podría transformarse en solución real, gracias a destacables logros de diseño e ingeniería que han sido reconocidos y premiados globalmente y que incorporan el uso de las mismas fuerzas naturales que originan la aglomeración en estos giros.

Fortunately, a young dreamer had a vision which soon could become a real solution, as a result of notable design and engineering achievements which have received global recognition and awards, and that incorporates the use of the very same natural forces that cause the agglomeration in those swirls.

This would be something unimaginable without those unusual currents and these 5 areas of high concentration.

Boyan explica mejor este punto: “Filtrar el océano con barcos recorriendo todos sus rincones tomaría varios cientos de años y una gigantesca inversión en combustibles y horas hombre. Con este sistema, podremos limpiar cada giro en solo 5 años y a un costo miles de veces menor.”

Boyan explains this point in detail: “To filter the ocean with ships traveling all the ocean’s nooks and crannies would take several hundreds of years and would represent a huge investment in fuel and work hours. With this system we will be able to clean each swirl in only 5 years at a cost thousands of times smaller.”

“Al usar el movimiento del mar, evitamos tener que mover los dispositivos o crear flujos artificiales de agua, con lo que logramos crear dispositivos muy sostenibles, con materiales de larga duración, que no requieren combustibles ni producen emisiones” agrega Slat.

“By using the movement of the ocean we prevent having to move the devices or having to create artificial water flows, so we were able to create very sustainable devices with long lasting materials, which do not require fuel or produce emissions” explains Slat.

La capacidad de recolección y los dispositivos a usar, ya han sido probados como viables y eficientes, pero el proyecto tiene otra ventaja que pocos proyectos ambientales suelen tener: Es económicamente rentable en el corto plazo a través de la venta del plástico recuperable, que según estimaciones de la propia organización, serían cerca de 7 millones de toneladas con un valor superior a los mil millones de dólares.

The collection capacity and the devices to be used have already been tested in scale and found viable and efficient, but the project has still an additional advantage that few environmental projects usually have: It is financially efficient in the short term through the sale of the recovered plastic, which according to estimates of the same organization would be around 7 million tons with a value in excess of one thousand million dollars.

Ocean

Luego de casi 3 años de estudios y pruebas a menor escala, Boyan y su equipo de más de 80 profesionales ya han asegurado buena parte del financiamiento necesario y están a menos de un año de poner en marcha la primera fase del Ocean Clean Array, un kilométrico entramado de bollas y plataformas de recolección que no usarán redes sino que aprovecharán las corrientes y remolinos de los giros oceánicos para mover gigantescos flujos de agua a través de los dispositivos y capturar solo la basura, sin afectar ninguna forma de vida, ni siquiera al microscópico plancton.

Following almost 3 years of studies and trials on smaller scales, Boyan and his team of over 80 professionals have already secured a good part of the necessary financing and are at less than a year from launching the first phase of the Ocean Clean Array, a kilometric framework of interwoven buoys and collection platforms which will not use nets. Instead they will take advantage of the currents and eddies of the ocean’s swirls to move gigantic flows of water through these devises and capture only the trash, not affecting any form of life, not even microscopic plankton.

Our trash also floats next to the Earth’s atmosphere.

Since the launching of the Sputnik in 1957, humanity has placed in orbit some 6,000 satellites of which 5,600 are still orbiting our planet.

De estos, poco más de 1.000 están activos y son vitales para nuestra telefonía, transportes, televisión, internet, desarrollo científico, predicciones climáticas o GPS, entre muchas otras áreas.

El resto de los satélites, unas 4.500 máquinas apagadas, son simple chatarra espacial sin ninguna utilidad presente.

Sin embargo el problema es mucho mayor que esto, pues los satélites son solo una pequeña parte de la basura en órbita geoestacionaria, que según el informe Space Debris and Human Spacecraft publicado por Nasa el 2013, alcanza una estratosférica cifra de 500.000 piezas con tamaño mayor a una uva y unas 20.000 con un tamaño mayor al de una manzana.

Nuestra basura también flota sobre la atmósfera terrestre.

Of those, a few more than 1,000 are active and are vital for our telephony, transportation, television, internet, scientific development, weather forecasting or GPS, among many other areas.

The rest of the satellites, about 4,500 dead machines are simply space junk with no present usefulness.

However, the problem is much bigger than that since those satellites are only a small part of the geostationary orbiting garbage. According to the “Space Debris and Human Spacecraft” report published by NASA in 2013, the space garbage reaches the stratospheric figure of 500,000 pieces exceeding the size of a grape and about 20,000 with a size larger than an apple.

Satellites since 1957 Entre esas 20.000 piezas grandes, además de los 4.500 satélites inactivos también se incluye etapas de cohetes de lanzamiento, paneles solares desprendidos, herramientas perdidas por astronautas así como una gran cantidad de escombros de colisiones, mientras que las más pequeñitas van desde pequeños tornillos o tuercas hasta minúsculos escombros apenas visibles.

“A veces uno cree que está viendo unas preciosas estrellas fugaces, aunque en realidad son trozos de basura espacial que se acercan a la Tierra y se incendian al entrar en la atmósfera”, explica el Dr. Chang.

El problema es que estos objetos viajan en sus órbitas a unos 28.000 Km/h (una bala de fusíl no llega a 2.000km/h) y a esa velocidad hasta el objeto más pequeñín es un misil capaz de grandes daños, no tan solo a los 1.000 satélites activos sino también a la Estación Espacial Internacional (ISS), la Estación Mir, los telescopios Hubble, Keppler o Spitzer y los observatorios X Chandra, Soho y CGRO, entre otras invaluables creaciones de la humanidad.

Ya un satélite francés resultó inutilizado por el impacto de un pequeño escombro, otro satélite de la empresa Iridium se pulverizó al chocar contra un satélite ruso y en varias ocasiones la ISS ha tenido que reubicar su posición para evitar posibles colisiones con objetos que caen en su misma órbita.Y por supuesto, también hay una pequeñita probabilidad de impacto sobre un astronauta en caminata espacial, un riesgo siempre presente y cuyas consecuencias fueron muy bien reflejadas en la premiada película Gravity.

Among those 20,000 large pieces, in addition to the 4,500 inactive satellites, there’s also several stages of launching rockets, solar panels that have come loose, tools lost by astronauts as well as a large quantity of debris from collisions. The smaller particles vary from screws or nuts to miniscule trash barely visible.

“Sometimes one believes to be watching some beautiful falling stars when in reality those are hunks of space garbage that come close to the Earth and burn when they enter the atmosphere”, explains Dr. Chang.

The problem is that those objects travel in their orbits at about 17,500 mph (a rifle bullet does not reach 1,250 mph) and at that speed, even the smallest of objects is a missile capable of causing severe damage not only to the 1,000 active satellites, but also the International Space Station (ISS), the Mir Station, Hubble, Keppler or Spitzer telescopes or the X Chandra, Soho and CGRO observatories, among other invaluable creations of humanity.

A French satellite already was rendered useless by the impact of a small piece of junk, another satellite of the firm Iridium was pulverized when it collided with a Russian satellite and on several occasions the ISS has had to change its position to prevent collisions with objects that fall within its orbit. And of course, there is also a very small possibility of impact with an astronaut on a space walk, an ever-present risk which consequences were very well reflected in the recent movie Agujero producido por un pequeño escombro sobre un satélite japonés.

La Solución:

VASIMR, el revolucionario cohete de magneto-plasma creado por Chang y NASA en Guanacaste y Houston, pronto revolucionará los viajes espaciales no solo por el aumento en las capacidades de propulsión y velocidades posibles, sino también por la baja de costos y de las cantidades de combustible a transportar. Por ejemplo, permitirá llevar humanos a Marte en solo 39 días versus los 240 días que tomaría con cohetes químicos, a una cuarta parte del costo y llevando 30 veces menos peso en combustible.

The solution:

VASIMR, the revolutionary magneto-plasma rocket created by Chang and NASA in Guanacaste and Houston, soon will revolutionize space travel not only due to the increase of propulsion capacities and the possible speeds, but also because of the lower costs and lower amounts of fuel to be carried. For example, it will allow taking humans to Mars in only 39 days versus the 240 days that would take with present chemical fuel rockets, at one fourth of the cost, and carrying 30 times less weight in fuel.

Pero el espíritu ecologista de este brillante físico costarricense, lo llevó a vislumbrar una tarea más ambiental para sus cohetes: “Nuestro objetivo en Ad Astra Rocket es poder poner en órbita un camión de la basura que recoja los objetos de desecho”, explica.

But the ecologic spirit of this brilliant Costa Rican physicist, led him to devise a more environmental task for his rockets: “Our objective at AdAstra Rockets is to be able to place in orbit a “garbage collector truck” that picks up the discarded objects”, he explains.

Ad Astra podría recuperar lo reusable y lanzar el resto en ruta de colisión con el Sol, que actuaría como una especie de mega-reciclador cósmico, capaz de descomponer todo nuevamente a átomos individuales, devolviendo esa materia a su estado inicial, como si recién salieran del horno cósmico donde originalmente fueron creadas.

AdAstra could recover the recyclable and send the remaining items on a collision course with the Sun, which would act as a sort of cosmic mega-recycler, capable of separating everything once more into individual atoms thus returning the materials to its initial state, as if just coming out of the cosmic oven where they were originally created.

Without a doubt, two dreams that would have looked utopic merely a decade ago, today are concrete possibilities.

Because as it has been shown hundred of times throughout history, a few utopias do end up becoming reality. Transplanting a heart, traveling to the moon, talking to someone a long distance away, flying to another continent or even moving a cart without use of animal force were once treated as ridiculous ideas. Things absolutely impossible to do!

For the sake of our cosmic ship called planet Earth and for the benefit of all of us who travel in it, let’s hope that this pair of noble dreamers show us once more that when our restless species decides to daydream, the sentence “impossible to do” will frequently end up being preceded by the words “it looked”.

However, in contrast with the ostrich, the whale shark is ovoviviparous, that is, the eggs will grow inside the mother.

Esto implica que las moléculas de agua que en este momento corren por sus venas y las mías, han estado en millones de sitios antes de venir a colaborar con nuestros cuerpos.

Did you know that the great majority of the water molecules that circulate in our planet today are the very same water molecules that already existed on Earth when it was finishing its formation some 4.000 million years ago?

This means that the water molecules that run through your veins at this instant have been in millions of places before they come to help our bodies.

Each water molecule has a millenarian history of travels throughout our planet, throughout time and through a wide variety of forms. They could have been the steam of a powerful Precambrian geyser, ice during the great glacial periods, soft dew drops by a beautiful Jurassic waterfall, artistic snow crystals falling over a wooly mammoth or even that soft rain that refreshed your grandmother’s face the day she met your grandfather.

And almost certainly, just as today they contribute to the flow of our blood, at some point in history those same magic molecules of H2O also liquefied the plasma of primitive bacteria, of a trilobite 300 million years ago, a large Apatosaurus 100 million years in the past or a giant Sequoia barely 30 or 40 centuries ago.
