2010 was a dark year for the global economy but doubly so for Guanacaste. The country, in particular this province, witnessed a sudden deceleration of commercial activity and the abrupt halt of new real estate investment, one of the worst hit industries worldwide. Moreover, this all followed years of accelerated real estate development and an intense growth in tourism levels.

evertheless, 2011 is starting to be written with a different pen, a much more optimistic one, with which each stroke traces solid signs of recovery. Investment and activity are returning to the area and many new projects that had remained frozen for months are now moving forward.

El 2010 fue un año negro para la economía mundial pero doblemente duro para Guanacaste. El país y muy en particular esta provincia, luego de años de un boom inmobiliario y turístico intenso, vio desacelerarse fuertemente su actividad comercial y desaparecer el influjo de nueva inversión inmobiliaria, una de las industrias más golpeadas a nivel global.

trazo imprime sólidas señales de recuperación. La inversión y actividad están volviendo a la zona y se están relanzando muchos proyectos que llevaban meses congelados.

Un nuevo aeropuerto a la medida de los desafíos:

A new airport is being built to accommodate the growth in tourism: The first good news is that the much-awaited expansion of the Liberia airport is already underway and on firm footing. If progress continues at the present rate, arrivals to Guanacaste after August of this year will be very different: A two story terminal, boarding ramps, more amenities, new commercial areas, more service personnel and expedited processing through Immigration and Customs. This new terminal will not only expand to almost double the current operational capacity

(it will be able to handle 1,500 travelers simultaneously), but it will also substantially increase passenger security and the quality of services provided to them. As part of the same plan, it will also increase the size of the runways to enable them to receive larger aircrafts.

La primera buena nueva es que la anhelada ampliación del aeropuerto de Liberia ya está en marcha y a paso firme. Si todo sigue a este ritmo, a partir de Agosto de este año la llegada a Guanacaste será muy distinta:Terminal de dos pisos, puentes de embarque, mayores comodidades, nuevas áreas comerciales, más personal de servicio y trámites más expeditos de Migración y Aduanas.

Esta nueva terminal no solo ampliará a casi el doble la capacidad operativa (se podrá atender a 1500 viajeros simultáneamente), sino que también mejorará sustancialmente la seguridad de los pasajeros y la calidad de los servicios que se les brinde. Además, como parte del mismo plan, se aumentará la capacidad pista de aterrizaje para poder recibir aeronaves de mayor tamaño.

Esta ampliación, era un paso esencial para reimpulsar la industria turística de la provincia, que ahora espera con entusiasmo la concreción de nuevos vuelos, tarea a la que ya está abocada de lleno la directiva de CATURGUA (Cámara de Turismo de Guanacaste) en conjunto con el ICT (Inst. Costarricense de Turismo) y el ministro de Turismo Carlos Benavides.

This expansion is an essential step in recharging the tourism industry in the province, which is now enthusiastically awaiting more news concerning the arrival of new flights. CATURGUA (Chamber of Tourism of Guanacaste) in conjunction with the ICT (Costa Rica Tourism Institute) and Mr. Carlos Benavides, Minister of Tourism, are working hard on this task. Beyond the additional flights that already have been confirmed from Denver and El Salvador, there is progress in negotiations for future arrivals to Liberia by new airlines from Eastern Europe, Asia and South America. Simultaneously, multiple “Fam Trips” (familiarization visits to present Guanacaste as a tourism destination) for wholesaler

Medical tourism will have luxury headquarters. Another very big project being re-launched in the area following a year on standby is the ‘Pacific Plaza Health and Living’, a mega community offering medical and residential services 10 minutes from the Liberia International Airport and the beaches of the Gulf of Papagayo. The first phase has already started with the construction of the CIMA Hospital, which promises to be the largest and most modern facility in the region. With a total investment of $125 million, Pacific Plaza will be developed in 7 phases in a 54-acre area, which will include villas, condos, hotels, offices, shopping centers and a recreational center in addition to the hospital. During these last few years, Costa Rica and particularly the province of Guanacaste, have been betting heavily on attracting medical tourism to the region, and the arrival of CIMA and Pacific Plaza are key pieces in this projection. Another important milestone in promoting the country as a premier destination for medical tourism will take place in May when the country will host the 2nd Medical Travel International Summit, from May 2 to 4, 2011 at the Ramada Herradura Hotel in San Jose and the Hilton Papagayo in Guanacaste. Otro gran proyecto que se ha relanzado en el área, luego de más de un año en standby, es el ‘Pacific Plaza Health and Living’, una mega-comunidad de servicios médicos y residenciales, a 10 minutos del aeropuerto internacional de Liberia e igual distancia de las playas del Golfo de Papagayo. The largest country club in Costa Rica:

Finally, a 3rd mega project in the region has recently been revitalized. We are referring to the ‘Guanacaste Country Club’, a gigantic real estate project to be built on 2604 acres, mainly focused on promoting health and sport activities for residents. The vast complex will include 1311 luxury residences. A golf course designed by well-known golfer and designer Jack Nicklaus. 8 covered tennis courts plus a Jim Courier pro academy (all courts with US Open-style hard floor covering and one with seating stand for competitions). A huge swimming pool with

tournament seating, 2 other pools and school by Olympic champion Mark Spitz. It will also have a convention center, club house, fitness center, spa and playground, restaurants, volleyball courts, 5 miles of hiking trails and 10 miles of mountain bike trails – all this in an enormous area at the foothills of the Guanacaste Mountain Range, just 10 minutes from Liberia and 20 from the International Airport (LIR).

The concept developed by Biden and his partner Craig Williamson is very unique: They have made a commitment to developing all elements in the most sustainable manner possible. Its aroma draws us in from afar. It conjures memories and sensationsâ&#x20AC;Ś Daily, it offers us a little push to get us going in the morning or provides the perfect excuse to sit down for a chat with a friend.

Sbeverage econd only to water, coffee is the most consumed in the world, displacing tea in recent years and

thus toppling centuries of tea supremacy. The growing popularity of coffee is mostly due to its revitalizing effect although in recent decades it has gained much attention thanks to the dispersion of new ways to drink it.

The Tico Coffee

For Costa Rica, coffee is an integral part of its history and culture, a veritable icon and an object of national pride. It was in the Golden Era of Coffee (Second half of the 19th century) that railway networks, the National Theatre and many other important national monuments were erected, as well as the first decent roads to the port of Limon on the Caribbean side and to the port of Caldera on the Pacific side. 20

Even though on a global scale the country does not produce a large volume of coffee, it is famous for cultivating beans of very high quality and with great complexities of flavors and aromas. Thanks to the conditions in which it is cultivated and the special policies surrounding production, the country is recognized on a worldwide level for its organic coffee, which comes with very low environmental impact and high social benefit. In recent years such recognition has opened the doors to growing markets concerned with the sustainability of their providers. All the coffee cultivated in our country is either the Caturra or Catuai variety of the Arabic species, which can only be grown at high elevations, on volcanic land with low levels of acidity. All of these factors produce coffee with more complex and aromatic flavors than those of the Robusta species, the other popular variety commercially cultivated in the world.

Su fama creciente se debe básicamente a su efecto revitalizante, aunque en la última década ha ganado mucho terreno gracias a la popularización de nuevas formas de tomarlo.

El Café Tico

Para Costa Rica, el café es parte de su historia y su cultura. Todo un ícono y un gran orgullo nacional. Fue en la época dorada del café (Segunda mitad del siglo 19) que se construyeron buenos caminos a los puertos de Limón y de Caldera, redes ferroviarias, el Teatro Nacional y varios otros importantes monumentos nacionales. Aunque el país no produce grandes volúmenes en términos globales, si tiene la fama de cultivar cafés de muy alta calidad y con gran complejidad de sabores y aromas. Gracias a las condiciones de cultivo y especiales políticas cafetaleras, el país es reconocido a nivel mundial por producir un café casi orgánico, de muy bajo impacto ambiental y alto beneficio social, lo que en años recientes le ha abierto las puertas a mercados emergentes muy interesados en la sostenibilidad de sus proveedores. Todo el café que se cultiva en nuestro país es de la variedad Arábiga en sus subvariedades Caturra y Catuaí, reservadas a tierras altas de origen volcánico y con poca acidez, que dan como resultado cafés de sabores más complejos y aromáticos que los de la variedad Robusta, la otra cultivada comercialmente en el mundo.

For a perfect coffee: Para un café perfecto: Choosing the coffee: Find out which is your favorite roasting style (a coffee tour is a great way to re-discover coffee). When buying, look for the premium grains, which signify better selection and care in the roasting process. Select the appropriate grind for the type of equipment you use. (See below “Tips for Each System”). The small growers always offer fresher coffee but with less regularity in flavor from one purchase to the next.

Never serve coffee in plastic or metal cups as those alter the original flavor. It’s also good to warm the cup before serving the coffee. This avoids temperature shock, which rapidly oxidates the beverage and results in loss of flavor and aroma. Nunca sirva un café en vasos de plástico o metal, ya que ambos alteran el sabor original. A versatile drink

Although there are only 4 basic ways to extract the flavor from the grain, its combinations as a drink are numerous. “Chorreado” or percolated: Prepared by slowly and repetitively running boiling water through a cloth or paper filter filled with ground coffee. Espresso or Express: Prepared by rapidly running boiling water under pressure through the ground coffee for about 20 seconds. Turkish: Prepared by boiling finely ground coffee in the water. French: The coffee is soaked in hot water and then after 1 minute it is compressed and filtered.

Combining flavors and sensations.

Capuccino: 1/3 espresso, 1/3 milk and 1/3 boiled milk foam, with a touch of powdered cocoa and cinnamon. “Café con leche”, latte coffee or café au lait: 1/3 espresso and 2/3 milk. Macchiato or “cortado”: An espresso with milk foam on top Latte macchiato: 4/5 milk, 1/5 espresso coffee. Café Moka: 1/3 espresso coffee, 1/3 hot cocoa and 1/3 milk. Mokaccino: ¼ espresso coffee, ¼ cocoa, ¼ milk and ¼ milk foam. In some parts of the world coffee is served with also a pinch of salt or lemon. In the Middle East coffee is prepared with a pinch of pepper, cinnamon or cardamom, others add cognac or perfumed liqueurs. In Vietnam it is fixed with chicory and condensed milk while in many parts of the world it is a very popular summer drink served very cold with whipped cream and ice cream.

En algunas zonas del mundo lo toman con una pizca de sal o limón, en medio oriente se le toma con un toque de pimienta, canela o cardamomo, otros le agregan coñac o licores perfumados, en Vietnam lo preparan con achicoria y leche condensada, mientras que en muchos sitios del mundo, es una popular bebida de verano, tomado bien frío con crema batida y helado.

Sabías que... Although many consider espresso the strongest type of coffee, it actually has less caffeine (only 1/3) than its percolated cousins. This is due to the length of exposure of the coffee to the water. A much shorter period (under 20 seconds) extracts less caffeine from the coffee grains.

Art Festival looks to repeat the success of its first year.

n modern times when most of us do not even raise our head from our daily chores, it’s refreshing to escape from the routine and go out as a family to enjoy, a festival bursting with art, where the ocean breeze mixes with creativity in its different manifestations. We’ll have the opportunity to do just that at the 2nd Annual Art Festival of Flamingo, the brain child of La Plaza Commercial Center -a spacious open air mall with beach architecture and an exquisite style of construction , with gardens, fountains and even an outdoor amphitheatre. E n tiempos modernos, en que la mayoría de nosotros no levanta la cabeza de sus labores diarias, es refrescante

escapar de la rutina y salir en familia a disfrutar por ejemplo, de un festival lleno de arte, donde la brisa marina se mezcla con la creatividad en sus distintas formas. La oportunidad de romper la inercia, nos la dará el 2˚ Festival de Arte de Flamingo, ideado por el Centro Comercial La Plaza, un amplio lugar al aire libre de arquitectura playera y un estilo constructivo exquisito que incluye abundantes jardines, piletas y hasta un anfiteatro al aire libre. The Rincon de la Vieja Volcano is undoubtedly a destination with a lot of diversity, and quite possibly the most multi-faceted place in Guanacaste. It has the capacity to make unforgettable memories for novel adventures, including intimate encounters with nature and unadulterated contact with the real Costa Rica: the one known for the slogan “no artificial ingredients.” This is one of the 5 areas in the country with the greatest ecological diversity and one of the National Parks that offers the widest variety of experiences. In addition to extensive primary rain forest on northern side and tropical dry forest in its southern area, Rincon de la Vieja National Park surrounds 2 active volcanoes (the Rincon de la Vieja volcano and the Santa Maria volcano), six minor volcanic peaks, several wells of boiling, bubbling mud (called pailas or pans), a volcanic lake and dozens of rivers, canyons and waterfalls. Within the park it offers visitors beautiful hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding trails.

El Volcán Rincón de la Vieja es sin duda un destino diverso, tal vez el más polifacético de Guanacaste, capaz de brindar gratas memorias a todo el que guste de aventuras novedosas, encuentros íntimos con la naturaleza y un contacto franco con la Costa Rica real, la del slogan ‘sin ingredientes artificiales’.

Created 37 years ago, this conservation area protects rich and very complex ecosystems that support spider monkeys, howler monkeys, tapirs, jaguars, cougars, coatis, agoutis, toucans and motmots (plus 300 varieties of birds), and at least 12,000 species of vegetables and hundreds of small mammals, amphibians and reptiles. But visiting Rincon de la Vieja is not only about discovering a scenic range of Costa Rican wildlife. It’s also about getting to know the human Costa Rica in its traditional aspect, particularly the “sabanero”, which is the Costa Rican version of a cowboy. The surrounding area of this corner, or “rincón,” of Costa Rica is still truly rural country. The change in the pace of life can be felt immediately after turning off the highway. Everything starts to move more slowly and the clock goes into “fiesta” - but considering that no one is paying attention to the time it lapses into a “siesta” . Although time on these byways ticks at a very relaxed pace, the mind is quickly filled with beautiful images and great memories.

Creada hace 37 años, esta de conservación protege ecosistemas rico y muy complejos del que forman parte micos araña, monos aulladores, tapires, jaguares, pumas, pizotes, agutís, tucanes, motmots, (además de otras 300 variedades de aves), al menos 12.000 especies vegetales y cientos de pequeños mamíferos, anfibios y reptiles. Pero visitar Rincón de la Vieja no es solo descubrir un amplio abanico escénico de la Costa Rica silvestre, sino también de la Costa Rica humana, en su lado sabanero y tradicional. Los alrededores de este Rincón aún son tierras verdaderamente rurales. Uno puede sentir como a poco de dejar la carretera, todo comienza a moverse en calma y el reloj se va primero de fiesta y después de siesta al ver que nadie lo necesita... En estas rutas, las horas pasan relajadas aunque se llenan rápido de bellas imágenes y lindos recuerdos.

As if nature and the rural surroundings were not enough of an attraction, Rincon has also become synonymous with adventures and innovative experiences. There are a variety of options in the area for canopy tours, kayaking, canyoning, tubing, rappelling and several other activities ending in “ing,” all of which are very entertaining and stimulating. The best part is that while activities are pumped with adrenaline and a sense of extreme adventure, all are very safe and have few age restrictions, allowing them to be equally enjoyed by both young and old. Other available options for visitors to this area include hiking up to the volcano’s crater, horseback rides through forests and plains, a 1.300 ft ride down the longest waterslide in the country, several thermal centers and spas (volcanic mud baths are classic), visiting a massive botanical garden and butterfly farm, mountain biking or hiking on forest trails. One thing that bears special mention is the warm hospitality and openness of the people of these parts. It is always a pleasure to stop along the way to chat with the locals. Most of the hotels around here boast a rustic style with relatively few luxuries but all the basic amenities of modern life. Thanks to the gentle personality of the locals, the area has become known for their committed and outstanding service. Como si lo natural y lo rural no fuese suficiente atractivo, el Rincón se ha hecho también sinónimo de aventura y experiencias novedosas. En la zona hay múltiples opciones de canopy tour, kayaking, canyoning, trekking, tubbing, rappeling y varias otras cosas terminadas en ing, todas muy entretenidas y estimulantes. Lo mejor es que aunque uno se siente cargado de adrenalina y aventura, está inmerso en actividades muy seguras y casi sin limites de edad, que divierten por igual a grandes y chicos. Otras de las opciones disponibles para quienes visiten esta zona son el ascenso hasta el cráter del volcán, cabalgatas por bosques y llanuras, descenso por un tobogán de 400 metros de largo, varios centros termales y spas (clásicos son los baños de barro volcánico), visitas a un inmenso jardín botánico y mariposario, práctica de ciclismo de montaña o caminatas por senderos entre los bosques. Algo que merece una mención especial, es la amabilidad y sencillez de la gente de esta zona, por lo que siempre es un aderezo grato parar por el camino a conversar con los lugareños. La mayoría de los hoteles en el área son de estilo rústico y sin demasiado lujo aunque sí con todas las comodidades de la vida moderna. Gracias al carácter gentil de los lugareños, sobresale en el área un servicio muy dedicado y espontáneamente amable. Hace poco, en nuestra edición 28, les contamos sobre el lado norte y más lluvioso del Rincón y también sobre Blue River Resort con su agradable combinación de piscinas termales, mariposario, orquideario, un extenso jardín botánico de casi 1000 variedades de plantas, un lujoso spa y ese hermoso río celeste con sus muchas cascadas... El turno de la cara sur del Rincón de la Vieja. Esta vez, nos fuimos a develar la cara sur, por el camino a Curubandé (la entrada más cercana a Liberia), recorriendo los hoteles en el camino y la variada lista de tours que ofrecen. Luego de escanear toda las opciones, nos decidimos por penúltimo en la ruta, ya dentro del parque, que ofrece una muy amplia gama de actividades y muy buenas tarifas comparativas, aunque rápidamente nos encontramos con una serie de buenas sorpresas, un rotundo know-how del personal y muchas buenas memorias para llevar de regreso a casa. Habíamos tomado la decisión correcta.

This time, it is the south face of the Rincon de la Vieja’s turn. On this trip we set out to discover the south face going on the road to Curubande (the closest entrance from Liberia). We went past various hotels along the way and the diverse list of tours offerred, and after scanning all the options, we picked the second to last hotel on the road inside the park. The hotel clearly offered a wide variety of activities and had good rates. Right away we were pleasantly surprised by the vast knowledge of the staff, and we knew we were going to leave with very fond memories.

Lo primera particularidad sobre Hacienda Guachipelín, se revela en su nombre. Esta era una antigua hacienda ganadera que de pronto quedó rodeada por un Parque Nacional, cuando esté se creó en 1973. Sus dueños, de un día para otro, al verse limitados en sus artes pecuarias, tuvieron la visión de ampliar sus funciones y crear actividades y servicios de alimentación para los turistas que visitaban el parque. El restaurante y los primeros tours fueron un éxito, tanto que poco después la antigua hacienda familiar se transformó en un hotel, a los antiguos corredores le brotaron muchas hamacas y junto con monturas y estribos, al equipo de la hacienda se le agregó muchos arneses, poleas, mosquetones, cascos, balsas y remos.

The first special thing about Hacienda Guachipelín is revealed in its name. This was once an old time cattle ranch before it was suddenly surrounded by protected lands when the National Park was created in 1973. The owners, finding their ranching activities limited from one day to the next, developed a vision of expanding its functions and creating activities and services to attract tourists visiting the park. The restaurant and the first tours became a success, so much so that the next step was to transform the old family “hacienda” into a hotel. The old porches sprung hammock after hammock, and along with the saddles and stirrups the hacienda’s equipment was increased by countless harnesses, pulleys, biners, helmets, rafts and ores.

Los más contentos con estos cambios fueron sin duda los caballos de la hacienda, que además de recibir un ‘Extreme Makeover’ en sus caballerizas, comenzaron a recibir tratamiento V.I.P. o mejor dicho V.I.C. (Very Important Caballo), con la mitad de trabajo que antes y tratamiento de spa diario para cada uno (duchas, cepillado, pedicure…)

La lista de actividades posibles en esta Hacienda es muy amplia y requiere de varios días de estadía o varias visitas si se quiere hacerlas todas. Lo bueno es que si uno va solo por el día, dejará siempre nuevas actividades para su próxima subida o si se hospeda una semana, no se quedará sin actividades nuevas para la cuarta o quinta jornada. Los 2 canopy tour propios de Guachipelín (algunos hoteles del área ofrecen canopy pero envían a sus huéspedes acá), son originales y muy escénicos, por lo que es usual que fotos tomadas aquí sean parte de las imágenes de promoción de Costa Rica en el mundo. Además de cables entre árboles, hay tramos en que uno vuela sobre un río dentro de un bellísimo cañón, escala paredes de 90˚, desciende casi en caída libre rumbo al río o cruza de una plataforma a otra balanceándose cual Tarzán en la jungla. Una experiencia muy especial son los educativos y muy bien guiados tour de observación de aves que brinda la hacienda. También recomendamos no perderse la jocosa experiencia del Tubbing (descenso grupal en

balsas individuales por un angosto pero muy inquieto río), una

cabalgata por las faldas del volcán o un tour de Rapelling (escalando y bajando

por varias paredes de roca refrescado por baños de cascadas o aterrizajes en del río).

No doubt the horses were the happiest with these changes, as in addition to getting an Extreme Makeover of their stables, they became VIP or rather, VIE (Very Important Equine), which included halving the amount of work they were used to and featured daily spa treatments for everyone (showers, brushing, pedicure). The array of possible activities in this Hacienda is impressive and if you want to do everything it would require either a several day visits or several different visits. The good part of this is that if you only plan a day visit, there will always be new activities for your next trip and if you stay for a week, you won’t run out of new activities by the fourth or fifth day. The 2 canopy tours owned by Guachipelin (some other hotels in the area offer canopy but send their guests here), are original and very scenic. Because of this pictures taken here often become part of promotional images of Costa Rica seen around the world. In addition to cables running amongst the trees, there are sections where you fly over a river inside a beautiful canyon, climb 90° walls, descend on a free fall towards the river and cross from one platform to another balancing just like Tarzan of the Jungle.

A laid back volcano: The Rincon de la Vieja is a 6,217 ft. active volcano. Though it hasn’t erupted since 1983, in 1991 it did spout a small, slow flux of lava for several weeks. Un volcán relajado: Rincón de la Vieja, con 1.895msnm, es un volcán activo y si bien no ha hecho erupción desde 1983, en 1991 liberó lentos flujos de lava durante algunas semanas.

Imperdible también un ascenso a la cumbre del volcán, visitar los cálidos pozos naturales de Río Negro y terminar cada día en una visita al spa Simbiosis, donde uno goza como niño embarrándose con lodo volcánico de pies a cabeza, pasando luego unos minutos en el sauna para después bajar a ‘probar’ cada una de las varias piscinas termales ocultas en el bosque. Quiere darse un regalo especial? Pida un masaje a orillas del río. Una forma perfecta de terminar el día. Pero la lista aún no termina, pues me falta contarles sobre la mayor particularidad de Guachipelín:Todas las mañanas los huéspedes pueden interactuar en las actividades propias de la hacienda y aprender por ejemplo a ordeñar vacas, ir galopando a los potreros para arrear ganado hacia el corral o ayudar a cepillar a un par de majestuosos y muy fotogénicos bueyes blancos, otros de los animales VIP de la hacienda. Mención especial para un tierno trío de pequeños burritos que gustan de pasear por el Centro de Aventuras. Les encanta la gente! Cuando uno se acerca, ellos inclinan sutilmente sus cabezas y te miran de reojo, como diciendo ¿Me rascas la oreja, please? Aunque no son parte del menú oficial de atractivos de Guachipelín, vuelven locos a los turistas, en especial a los niños, que no caben de alegría de poder abrazarse de manera tan tranquila con estos famosamente tercos aunque tiernos equinos. Un dato interesante para nacionales y extranjeros residentes: Los Domingos, Guachipelín está brindando un 50% de descuento en tours de ese día y en el hospedaje de Domingo a Lunes. Las mañanas de los Sábados en tanto, son un día especial en este hotel. Un día de fiesta y tradiciones en que los huéspedes y el personal se reúnen en el redondel para ver a hábiles cowboys hacer gala de sus destrezas con el lazo, a orgullosos jinetes mostrar las pintorescas caminatas y danzas de sus caballos y luego vitorear a valientes montadores en sus desafíos contra iracundos toros. Se podría seguir por varias páginas hablando del Rincón, pero ya no queda más espacio en esta edición y tendrá que ir a descubrir el resto personalmente... En resumen, un volcán y un Parque Nacional imperdible, plagado de bellezas y actividades para todos los gustos. Una experiencia múltiple e intensa que vale la pena (...más bien vale la alegría!) de ser vivida.

A very special experience is the educational and well-guided bird observation tour. We also recommend partaking in the incredibly fun “tubing” experience

(floating as a group in individual rafts through a narrow but very restless river), a horseback ride to the

foothills of the volcano or a rappelling tour (ascending and

descending several rock walls, cooling off in the baths of waterfalls or the landing in the river).

One should also be sure to go to the top of the volcano, visit the natural hot water springs at Rio Negro and end the day with a trip to the Symbiosis Spa where you can play like a child covering yourself or your friends with thermal mud from head to toe. Then spend a few minutes in the sauna before “trying out” each of the several thermal pools hidden in the forest. Do you want to give yourself a special treat? Get a massage on the margin of the river: The perfect ending to a great day.

An interesting note for national and foreign residents: on Sundays, Guachipelin offers a 50% discount on tours and rooms for the night. Meanwhile Saturday mornings are also special at this hotel. A day of fiesta and traditions in which guests and the staff gather at the “redondel” (corral) to watch the skillful “sabaneros” (cowboys) show off their abilities with the lasso. Proud horse riders demonstrate the picturesque walking and dancing of their mounts and then cheer the courageous “montadores” (bull riders) in their challenge against the brave bulls. I could continue filling several more pages talking about the numerous adventures available at Rincon, but there is no space left in this edition, so you’ll have to go out and experience it for yourself. In conclusion...Rincon de la Vieja is a volcano and a national park that cannot be missed. It is chock full of beauty and activities for all tastes. It’s an intense and multi-faceted experience that won’t dissapoint!

But the list is not finished yet. I still haven’t told you about one of the most special features of Guachipelin: Every morning guests can participate in the daily activities of the ranch and learn how to milk a cow, ride a horse through grazing fields to drive cattle to the corral or help brush a couple of majestic and very photogenic white oxen – some of the other VIP animals in the hacienda. Lastly, I have to give a special mention to the three cute little donkeys that like to walk by the Adventure Center. They love people! When someone gets close to them, they gently lower their heads and look sideways as if to say, “would you scratch my ear, please?” While not part of the official menu of Guachipelin attractions, they definately delight tourists. In particular, the children usually cannot contain their rapture at being able to hug such famously stubborn, albeit laid back, equines.

How to get there? The Park is located Northeast of Liberia, approximately 25 minutes by car (see map on page 54). From Liberia take the highway towards Nicaragua and after 5 Km take a right turn toward the Park and most of the hotels (this road is called the road to Curubande). There are 2 other entrances available (Road to Cañas Dulces 12 Km from Liberia) and towards Quebrada Grande (24 Km from Liberia) which will take you to other beautiful corners of the area, such as to Rio Celeste, and to interesting hotels such as Borinquen, Buena Vista Lodge or Blue River Resort. In contrast to some years ago, all these roads are in very good condition so you are able to get there in any type of vehicle without problem. Beware though, that this statement holds true for the dry season, but during the rainy season it is safer to go on a four-wheel drive vehicle.

Como llegar? Such close interaction with the rural traditions adds much flavor to the experience. La interacción tan cercana con las tradiciones campestres le agrega mucha sazón a la experiencia.

El Parque se ubica al noroeste de Liberia, a unos 25 minutos de viaje (ver mapa en pagina 54). En Liberia, tome la ruta a Nicaragua y 5 Km. después encontrará a mano derecha el cruce hacia al Parque y a la mayoría de los hoteles (llamada ruta a Curubande), aunque también hay otras 2 entradas de interés turístico: Ruta a Cañas Dulces en el 12 Km. desde Liberia y a Quebrada Grande a 24 Km. de Liberia, que conducen a otros rincones bellos de la zona como el Río Celeste y a hoteles interesantes como Borinquen, Buena Vista Lodge o Blue River Resort A diferencia de hace unos años, todos estos caminos están en muy buen estado, por lo que se puede ir con confianza en cualquier tipo de vehículo. This growth is reflected in an unexpected fact: In recent years sport fishing has surpassed the benefits of commercial fishing, generating more jobs, a higher total income and more revenue for the country. What’s even better, all this is accomplished with less than 1% of the environmental harm that is caused by the massive extraction of the species under the systems of long line fishing, large trawling nets and other practices of industrial fishing. Additionally, sports fishing results in additional revenue generation for those beyond the sport fishing industry through the purchase of airline tickets, hotels, car rental, tours, restaurants, and products and services. Overall, sport fishing represents a strong financial push within the economy. 42

La pesca deportiva en Costa Rica es una actividad bien regulada y en general, manejada de manera muy responsable. Existe conciencia en aficionados y tour operadores de que el futuro de la actividad depende de las prácticas de sostenibilidad que se implementen en el presente. Hoy, el verdadero pescador deportivo respeta los lineamientos, las vedas y tamaños mínimos de cada especie, cuida el mar y usa solo aparejos de pesca que permitan el ‘Catch and Release’ (Capturar y liberar).

Lo contrario, el pescador furtivo o antideportivo, que no se preocupa por las especies, vedas, tamaños ni los métodos de captura, es hoy mal visto y en realidad, cada vez menos visto.

Sport fishing in Costa Rica is a well-regulated activity, generally handled in a very responsible manner. The sport fishing enthusiast and the tour operators share the view that the future of the activity depends on the sustainable practices implemented at this time. Today, the true sport fisherman respects the parameters, the closed seasons and the minimum size of each species, looks out for the ocean and uses only fishing gear that allows “Catch and Release”. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the uncaring or non-sport fisherman who has little respect for the species, designated seasons, or size or methods of capture, is becoming less favorably viewed and seen less frequently than in years past.

El estilo de Catch and Release o pescar y luego soltar el pez una vez pesado, fotografiado o medido, es lo que manda hoy en este deporte. Esto no quiere decir que se impida al pescador llevar a casa alguna de sus capturas, sino llevar solo individuos adultos y de especies permitidas.Todo el resto debe volver al mar en buenas condiciones para que crezcan y se reproduzcan. Por ello, también son varias las instrucciones respecto a los señuelos usados, el manejo al embarcar los peces y el tiempo que se tarde en devolverlos al agua.

The primary method of sport fishing today utilizes the Catch and Release system, which involves the capture and then the careful release of the fish after photographing or measuring it. This does not preclude the fisherman from taking home some of their catches - however they are restricted to adult fish of designated species. All others are to be returned to the ocean in good condition so they can continue to grow and reproduce. To this end there are several guidelines regarding the lures that can be used, the manipulation when landing the fish and the time elapsed prior to returning them to the water. 43

A solo-sport or a social activity? While there are still fishermen who prefer to fish alone to disconnect from the world for a while, there is a large tendency to view fishing as a social activity in which family and friends participate together. Today’s sport fisherman is not only concerned with the satisfaction of the catch, nowadays it is more about the experience. This experience includes a fun time with good company surrounded by the splendor of the ocean. At the end of the day, the sport fisherman’s satisfaction is increased only by the enormous pleasure of having had someone to share such moments with.

Si bien aún hay aficionados que prefieren la práctica en solitario para desconectarse del mundo por un rato, hoy hay una gran tendencia a ver la pesca como una actividad social en que participan también la familia y amigos. Great challenges in a privileged environment. In the world of sport fishing, the waters of the Costa Rican Pacific are synonymous with record catches of Marlin (Blue and Black), Sailfish, Mahi-Mahi, Roosterfish, Yellow Fin Tuna and Wahoo. These particular species are the large challenging gladiators of the sport fishing world. The Gulf of Papagayo in the Northern coast of Guanacaste is one of the most seducing spots in the country for foreign fishermen. This Gulf not only offers challenging species that put up a good fight, but the waters are also generally calm and there is a very good service infrastructure in place.

Pesca en Costa Rica: Grandes desafíos en un entorno privilegiado.

En el mundo de la pesca deportiva, las aguas del pacífico de Costa Rica son sinónimo de pez vela, dorado, gallo, atún aleta amarilla o wahoo, es decir, gladiadores grandes o desafiantes. El Golfo de Papagayo, en la costa norte de Guanacaste, es uno de los spot del país que más seduce a pescadores extranjeros, gracias a especies muy batalladoras, aguas usualmente calmas y una muy buena plataforma de servicios.

It is in these waters that on March 4th, 5th and 6th of 2011, the First Annual Fishing Tournament of the Gulf of Papagayo will take place. A good number of the most elite national and foreign fishermen will come together in an attempt to catch the biggest fish and to achieve the largest number of captures or releases, according to the rules of each species. The Tournament includes a large and attractive variety, with 10 different objectives. All species are brave warriors such as the Amberjack, Cubera Snapper, Grouper, Jack Cravella, Mackarel, Mahi-Mahi, Roosterfish, Snook, Wahoo, and Yellowfin Tuna. As the event will take place during one of the best times of year for fishing, the organizers expect a turnout that will break several records. In anticipation of this they have secured the presence of a representative of IGFA (International Game Fishing Association), the entity that certifies the records for this discipline at an international level.

Es en estas aguas donde los días 4, 5 y 6 de Marzo del 2011, se llevará a cabo el 1˚ Torneo Anual de Pesca del Golfo de Papagayo, donde buena parte de la elite nacional y otros tantos pescadores extranjeros se reunirán a batallar por atrapar al más grande o lograr la mayor cantidad de capturas o liberaciones, según las reglas para cada especie. Las variedades que incluye el torneo es surtida y muy atractiva, con 10 objetivos diferentes, todos adversarios aguerridos como el Hojarán, Pargo Cabrilla, Jurel, Macarela, Dorado, Gallo, Róbalo,Wahoo y Atún Aleta Amarilla. Como el evento se realizará en una época del año con excelentes condiciones, los organizadores auguran que en el torneo se romperá varios records. Por ello, han asegurado la presencia de un representante de la IGFA (Siglas en inglés de la Asociación Internacional de Pesca Deportiva), entidad que certifica los records a nivel mundial de la disciplina. Además del torneo en sí, hay varias otras actividades complementarias ya confirmadas para esos días, entre las que se incluye una competencia de natación en aguas abiertas, otra de ciclismo de ruta, una exhibicion del Grupo Motorizado Coyotes CR, la carrera costera Amor de Temporada y una limpieza de playas y fondo submarino de la bahía.

-Follow the guidelines of each country. Fish with a conscience, particularly in regards to the less abundant species.

- Seguir la normas de cada país y pescar con conciencia, en especial las especies menos abundantes.

-Do not pollute the waters with garbage, hooks or fine lines and as much as possible, pick up floating debris.

- No arrojar desperdicios, anzuelos ni lienzas al mar y en lo posible recoger objetos a la deriva. - No arrojar gasolinas, aceites o detergentes al mar.

-Do not dump gasoline, oil, or detergent in the ocean. -Liberate any fish that you feel may not yet be mature.

- Poner en libertad cualquier ejemplar que su conciencia indique como inmaduro.

-Strive not to hurt the fish skin or the mucous substance that covers it. This acts as the fish’s protection from diseases.

- Evite lastimar la piel de los peces o la mucosidad que la recubre, pues les protege de enfermedades.

-Try to unhook the fish while in the water and always wet your hands before handling them.

- Ojalá desanzuelar a los peces en el agua y siempre mojarse las manos antes de manipularlos.

-Do not keep them out of the water for long.

- Procurar no tenerlos mucho tiempo fuera del agua,

-If the fish is very tired, before letting it go, hold the fish by the caudal fin and make forward movements in the water to aid in re-oxygenating them.

- Si el pez está muy fatigado, antes de liberarlo es recomendable tomarlo de la aleta caudal, haciendo movimientos en el agua hacia adelante con el fin de que se reoxigene.

The first canopy system in the world to have tourist purposes was built in… guess where? Yes, here in Costa Rica, on Monteverde’s rain forest in 1997. Tourism has a habit of generating good jobs in rural communities where work tends to be scarce. Meanwhile, modern tourists will not be outdone, and it’s increasingly frequent to find that along with the expenses of their trips, they also make financial contributions and donate time or talents to local social projects; happy to be able to make a positive impact on the environments they visit. This coupled with Costa Rica’s long history of promoting responsible tourism are some of the reasons why the country was selected as the site for the 3rd International Conference of Tourist Philanthropy. Participants from several countries will present and promote these concepts and their social and economic benefits. There will also be workshops and other related activities.

An extreme form of philanthropy tourism: A trip where the main objective is volunteer for social projects in poor countries, like building a school or a hospital. Some of the main NGOs that offer the ‘connection’ for volunteers around the world are: Habitat for Humanity, International Ecotourism Society, Volunteer Vacation and Earth Watch.

Los turistas modernos en tanto, no se quedan atrás y cada vez es más frecuente que junto con lo gastado en el viaje, también hagan aportes económicos, donen su tiempo o sus talentos a obras locales, felices de poder inferir positivamente en los ambientes visitados. Este concepto es llamado Filantropía del Viajero, es decir, un viaje en que el turista se cuida de tomar decisiones responsables y también retribuir algo positivo al destino que visita. Costa Rica, reconocido mundialmente como un país pacífico, democrático, socialmente justo y que cuida su medioambiente, es un destino que cautiva especialmente a este tipo de viajeros. Por ello y por todo el camino recorrido que tiene Costa Rica en el terreno del turismo responsable, el país ha sido elegido como sede de la 3˚ Conferencia Internacional de Filantropía del Viajero, donde expositores de varios países desarrollarán y promoverán estos conceptos y sus múltiples alcances sociales y económicos. Además habrá talleres y otras actividades asociadas.

Una de las formas más extremas de turismo filantrópico, son los viajes donde el objetivo principal es ser voluntario en proyectos sociales en países pobres, por ejemplo, para construir una escuela o un hospital. Algunas de las ONGs que ofrecen conección con para voluntarios alrededor del mundo son: Hábitat para la Humanidad, Volunteer Vacation, Earth Watch o la Sociedad Internacional de Ecoturismo.

The event will occur July 20-23, 2011 at the Monteverde Institute, located in the center of Costa Rica’s world-famous cloud forest. They organize the event in partnership with CREST (Center for Responsible Travel), which promotes solidary tourism at a global level.

Guanacaste’s commitment to green development will also be displayed at the 2nd Forum on Sustainable Commerce and Tourism on February 17-18th. Organized by CATURGUA (Chamber of Tourism of the provincee) in alliance with the Earth University and the event will take place at Earth La Flor (6 miles west of Liberia).

Esos Jueves 17 y Viernes 18 de Febrero, en las instalaciones de Earth La Flor (10 km. al Oeste de Liberia) son una oportunidad imperdible de actualizar todo lo que sabe sobre sostenibilidad y conocer lo último en tecnologías verdes.También habrá charlas y talleres sobre la nueva Ley de Residuos, muchas buenas noticias con la nueva Ley de Energías y también una completa introducción a los estándares LEED, la arquitectura bioclimática y la construcción de bajo impacto ambiental. Además de charlas y talleres, habrá decenas de stands, donde se presentará una amplia muestra de productos y servicios amigables con el ambiente.
