Costa Rica Aunque hace un tiempo una famosa cadena de comida rápida se autoproclamaba como el “lugar más feliz de la tierra”, un estudio mucho más científico hecho en 143 países, ha confirmado que este título le corresponde en realidad, a nuestra querida Costa Rica.
L
os que vivimos acá ya lo presentíamos, cierto? ¿Pero no encuentran genial tener una confirmación oficial? … y ¡además enterarse de que el país entero siente lo mismo! El revelador estudio de la Fundación NEF (New Economics Foundation), llamado “Índice del Planeta Feliz: Por qué las buenas vidas no tienen que costar un mundo”, es el segundo de su tipo y fue hecho a nivel global representando al 99% de la población mundial. El primero se hizo en 1961, pero con resultados muy distintos. Si bien la parte “más famosa” de este análisis es la percepción de felicidad de los habitantes, el estudio en su conjunto es un detallado análisis del grado de eficiencia ecológica y social de cada país, comparando el desarrollo económico y los niveles de consumo de cada nación, versus la expectativa de vida y la percepción de calidad de vida que reflejan sus ciudadanos. La gran sorpresa es que los resultados revelaron una imagen muy distinta de la esperada; una en que las naciones más “exitosas” del planeta reciben bajos puntajes y retroceden drásticamente al compararlos con la medición del año ‘61, mientras que países de crecimiento menos acelerado se llevan todos los premios en satisfacción ciudadana.

En 1961, Estados Unidos, China e India eran los 3 países “más felices del planeta”. Hoy en cambio, luego de varias décadas con modelos de desarrollo basados en el crecimiento incesante, sus ciudadanos ya no se sienten tan felices: China bajó al puesto 20, India al 35 y Estados Unidos al lugar 114. Los autores del estudio resumieron así el retroceso de estas naciones: “La carrera de las últimas décadas por incrementar continuamente sus ingresos, se ha dado a expensas del capital social y ambiental, generando consecuencias negativas en la salud mental de los ciudadanos.” Los costarricenses en cambio, reportan la más alta sensación de bienestar de todo el mundo y lo mejor es que lo logran con una huella ecológica muy pequeña, es decir, consumiendo solo la parte de los recursos naturales de la Tierra que les corresponde. Una vez más, Costa Rica con su modelo de sociedad tan sui generis, le muestra al mundo una alternativa viable. Esta vez, el mensaje no es únicamente de paz y de respeto al medioambiente, sino de algo aún más complejo y tal vez mucho más esquivo: La felicidad de las personas. Nuevamente, los ojos del mundo se dirigen sobre este pequeño terruño, esta vez con más ganas de escuchar e imitar sus recetas. Sin proponérselo, Costa Rica despertó la curiosidad del planeta y sin necesidad de decir una palabra, le lanzó una invitación a las otras naciones para descubrir la sabiduría que alberga en su singular modelo de vida. ¿ Quien no estaría curioso de descubrir con sus propios ojos la receta de la felicidad? ¿ Quien no querría saber como se las arregla esta economía para ser sólida y pujante, pero con una muy baja huella ecológica y un alto grado de satisfacción de sus habitantes? O como mejor dicen los autores del estudio, “¿cuál es esta receta para lograr vidas felices … que no cuesten un planeta?” Según parece, en Costa Rica hay una posible respuesta. Como siempre, los curiosos son muy bienvenidos…

Costa Rica Despite the claim made some time ago by a famous fast food chain proclaiming itself “the happiest place on earth”, a much more scientific study done in 143 countries, has confirmed that this title rightfully belongs to our beloved Costa Rica.
T
hose of us who live here had figured this out already, hadn’t we? But isn’t it fantastic to have official confirmation of it? And besides, to learn that the entire country feels the same way!
The revealing study conducted by the New Economics Foundation (NEF), entitled, “The Happy Planet Index: Why good lives don’t have to cost the Earth”, is the second of its kind and it took place at a global level representing 99% of the Earth’s population. The first one was done in 1961, but with very different results. While the “most famous” part of this analysis is the perception of happiness of the inhabitants of specific nations, the overall study is a detailed analysis of the level of ecological and social efficiency of each country. The study compares the economic development and the consumption levels of each nation in comparison to their life expectancy and perception of quality of life. The surprise is that the findings revealed a result much different from what was anticipated. In fact, the study exposed that the nations that were deemed most “successful “ in the 1961 study, received some of the lowest scores in this recent study, while countries with lower growth rates ranked higher in most aspects of citizen satisfaction.
In 1961, the United States, China and India were the 3 happiest countries on the planet. Today, however, these same countries, following several decades of development models based on a continuous growth rate, are ranked a lot lower on the charts. China ranked in 20th; India in 35th and the United States is now in 114th place. This is how the authors of the study summarized the receding position of those nations: “The race during the last decades to continually increase their income level has been achieved at the expense of the social and environmental capital, causing negative consequences to the mental health of their citizens.” Costa Ricans by contrast, report the highest perception of happiness amongst all nations polled and the best part is that the country attains this with a very small ecological footprint. That is, Costa Rican’s achieve satisfaction by consuming only the portion of Earth’s natural resources that rightfully correspond to them. Once more, Costa Rica with its model of society so unique, shows the world a viable alternative of development. This time the message is not only one of peace and respect for the environment, but also one of something even more complex and perhaps much more elusive: People’s happiness. Again, the eyes of the world are focused on this little mound of earth, only this time they are more anxious to listen to and imitate its recipes. Completely unintentionally, Costa Rica awakened the curiosity of the planet and without need for a single word, it launched an invitation to other countries to discover the wisdom hidden in its simpler life style. Who wouldn’t be curious to discover for themselves the recipe for happiness? Who wouldn’t want to know how this economy manages to be solid and alive, and still do so with a low level ecological footprint and a high degree of satisfaction amongst its citizens? Or as the authors of the study put it, “What is the recipe to attain happy lives... without costing the planet?” It appears that Costa Rica has found an answer. As usual, those of you who are curious are very welcome to come and enjoy for yourself...

A
visionary project for the Guanacaste region was recently announced by Proexsa Asociados and E3 Corp Investment Banking. We are referring to Pacific Plaza Health and Living, a medical and residential mega project that includes a world-class hospital in addition to high end commercial, hotel and residential installations. Phase one of the project represents an investment of U$15 million. According to Lou Aguilera, originator of the idea, “the Pacific Plaza Health and Living has been conceived as a retirement community with continuous intensive health care on the premises. It is a place where residents (retirees and older adults) will be able to find all the necessary medical attention needed during the different stages of their lives.” The project will be built on 54 acres of grounds strategically located 10 minutes away from the Daniel Oduber International Airport. The first stage will include the Guanacaste CIMA Hospital, which will function as a satellite of its San Jose site, with a heliport to connect both medical centers. In addition to the CIMA Hospital, the project includes the participation of consulting companies with international prestige such as Rees Associates Inc, responsible for the elaboration of the master plan, HKS Architects who will be in charge of the design of the hospital and Aureus Capital Ltd. with responsibility for the investment funds. The objective of Pacific Plaza Health & Living is to create a residential area in which the residents will have a condominium inclusive of all the benefits and advantages of the tourist facilities of the region. The enjoyment of a retirement complete with permanent assisted living. However, the project is not aimed exclusively at medical tourism; it will also take care of the needs of the entire community of Guanacaste, which at the present time does not have a high quality hospital center. “Just when residential developments have become a questionable subject due to the financial crisis, we are going to develop a concept that goes beyond a simple real estate plan. It fully embraces the health component, and as a result of this, will have a very favorable community impact on the entire Guanacaste region”, points out Mauricio Fernandez, Manager of E3 Corp. The project will break ground in mid 2010.

de Inversión. Se trata del Pacific Plaza Health and Living, un megaproyecto medico y residencial que incluirá un hospital de nivel internacional sumado a instalaciones comerciales, hoteleras y habitacionales de alta calidad. En su primera etapa, el proyecto representará una inversión de $15 millones. Según Lou Aguilera, creador de la idea, “Pacific Plaza Health and Living ha sido pensado como una comunidad de retiro con cuidados continuos, en el cual sus residentes (pensionados y adultos mayores) podrán encontrar toda la atención médica necesaria durante las distintas etapas de su vida.” El proyecto se levantará en un terreno de 22 hectáreas ubicado estratégicamente a 10 minutos del Aeropuerto Internacional Daniel Oduber. La primera etapa incluirá al Hospital CIMA Guanacaste, que funcionará como unidad satélite de la sede de San José, contando con helipuerto para conectar ambos centros médicos. Además del Hospital CIMA, el proyecto incluye la participación de firmas consultoras de gran prestigio internacional como Rees Associates Inc., encargada de elaborar el plan maestro, HKS Arquitectos, a cargo del diseño del complejo y Aureus Capital Ltda., responsables del fondo de inversión. El objetivo de Pacific Plaza Health & Living es crear un área habitacional en la que residentes dispongan con un condominio con todas las ventajas y acceso a las facilidades turísticas de la región, pero donde además cuenten con un hogar de retiro con asistencia médica permanente. Sin embargo, el proyecto no apunta solo al turismo médico, sino viene a atender la necesidad de toda la comunidad de Guanacaste, que en estos momentos no cuenta con un centro hospitalario de alto nivel. “Justo en momentos en que se cuestiona el tema de los proyectos inmobiliarios por la crisis financiera, vamos a desarrollar un concepto que va más allá de un simple plan inmobiliario, pues aborda de lleno el componente de salud, gracias a lo cual tendrá un impacto comunitario muy favorable para toda la región guanacasteca”, puntualizó Mauricio Fernández, Gerente de E3 Corp. El proyecto iniciará la construcción a mediados del 2010.

El recorrido fue divertido y nada exigente. Los senderos en excelente condición nos llevaron al comienzo de la ruta aérea, que incluye 11 cables de 30 a 400 metros de largo a alturas de entre 6 y 40 mts. sobre el dosel.
The outing was a lot of fun and not difficult at all. The trails were in excellent condition and took us to the starting point of an aerial adventure. The canopy included 11 cables of 100 to 1300 feet in length all suspended off the ground at a height between 20 and 130 feet. 17

Una Mañana muy mona
After leaving the first platform and swinging into a realm of century old trees, we saw several species of birds and were able to hear the howling of monkeys not very far from us. It only got better as we progressed and at the end of our flight on the 7th cable a surprise was waiting for us. The sound of the monkeys became much more pronounced and it became clear that the animals were at quite a close distance. It was then we discovered that the monkeys were in fact on the very same tree our zip line had just led us to. As we gazed up, there they were, comfortably settled just a few meters above our heads…
Desde el inicio del recorrido entre árboles centenarios, vimos varias especies de aves y pudimos escuchar a monos aulladores no tan lejos de donde estábamos. Sin embargo, al terminar el vuelo por el 7º cable, una sorpresa nos esperaba. Los monos de pronto sonaban muchísimo más cerca. Tan cerca como en el mismo árbol al que habíamos llegado, donde estaban muy bien instalados a solo unos metros por sobre nuestras cabezas…
While everyone took pictures, my 6-year-old daughter took advantage of the moment to practice her multilingual abilities by carrying out a fluent conversation in “monkey language” with our temporary neighbors.
Mientras todos tiraban fotos, mi hija de solo 6 años aprovechaba de poner en práctica sus habilidades multilingües en una fluida conversación en “monés” con nuestros temporales vecinos.
El resto de la ruta nos dedicamos a volar patas arriba, de espalda o como “súperman”, aunque la verdad, en esta ultima opción incomodaba un poco en nuestras cinturas.

You know… for a fact you have heard it. Everyone says that Costa Rica is a Pura Vida country! When visiting the country or living here for a while, the vast majority of people are fortunate enough to confirm it. This is truly a country where it’s easy to enjoy life. But…is it so for everyone?
Usted de seguro lo ha escuchado. Todos dicen que Costa Rica es un país Pura Vida! y al visitarlo o vivir un tiempo en el, la gran mayoría tiene la fortuna de confirmarlo. Es de verdad un país donde es fácil disfrutar de la existencia. Pero ¿es así para todos?

These are the reasons why Costa Ricans love their country so much and so many foreigners choose it for a vacation or as a place to start a new life. But enough compliments! Every coin has two sides and the truth is that all those specific conditions in which we have found so many positive things, are, for a few suffering newcomers, the beginning of a total nightmare! There aren’t many such instances, but they are there. It isn’t rare in Costa Rica to see a foreigner furious because the way of doing things here is very different from how they would be done in their country of origin. It isn’t rare either to see another individual highly upset because an order they placed several days prior is not ready or because things do not move as quickly or in the manner in which they are accustomed.
The cost of Pura Vida
Costa Rica has achieved all the good conditions previously mentioned, by opting for a unique set of priorities and in turn has chosen to minimize the importance of other factors. One could say that the major priority of Costa Rica is the degree of happiness achieved each day and the satisfaction that each citizen feels about his or her life.

While in most parts of Europe or the United States, professionalism, efficiency and meeting deadlines are sacred requirements for success, for a good number of Costa Ricans these usually aren’t the most relevant priority. It is necessary to understand that here the concept of success is…different. It has much more to do with the personal than with the work-related. The pura vida citizen will always first take care of having enough time to dedicate to the family and to the enjoyment of life. They will make sure to side step stress and evade suffering for things that are not worth suffering for. They will not worry about problems that have no solution. This does not mean that in this country problems are not considered important or that people are indifferent to having things done correctly. What it does mean is that things will not always be done with the same speed or attention to detail with which they would be done in Germany or with the same dedication and method with which a Japanese would do it. What is very likely is that when doing these things, people here will enjoy them more and in the process, they will suffer less stress…considerably less.

Mientras en gran parte de Europa o Estados Unidos, el profesionalismo, la eficiencia y el cumplimiento de los plazos son una ley sagrada y requisitos del éxito, para buena parte de los costarricenses, no suelen ser la prioridad más relevante. Hay que entender que aquí la concepción de éxito es… diferente.Tiene mucho más que ver con lo personal que con lo laboral. El ciudadano pura vida, siempre cuidará más de disponer de buen tiempo para dedicar a su familia y al disfrute de su existencia, se cuidará de evitar el estrés y de no sufrir por asuntos que no valen la pena, ni por los problemas que no tienen solución. Esto no quiere decir que en el país los problemas no importen ni que las cosas no se hagan bien, solo que no siempre se harán con la misma premura o exigencia con que se harían en Alemania o la misma dedicación y método con que lo haría un japonés. Lo que si es probable es que al hacer las cosas, aquí se disfrutará más y que en el proceso, se sufrirá de menos estrés...mucho menos.
All benefits have a price. Mental peace is a fundamental requirement to feeling completely satisfied and fulfilled in one’s life. To attain mental peace, the first major requirement is…. not to be stressed. It appears very obvious but that does not mean it’s any less true. Stress robs us of our intellectual and emotional peace. In Costa Rica, this is something that has always been known. The solution:

Once in a while, someone who is in a hurry will get upset. Costa Rica with a European mentality would no longer be Costa Rica and perhaps it would not be a country so pura vida. Wanting to change the country is not the correct option. The proper thing is to respect this culture, to understand it and to adapt oneself to it.
Todo beneficio tiene un costo. Para poder disfrutar de una vida plena, se requiere fundamentalmente de paz mental. Y para lograr paz mental, el primer gran requisito es… no estresarse. Suena muy obvio pero no por ello menos cierto. El estrés se roba de golpe nuestra paz intelectual y emocional. En Costa Rica, esto es algo que se aprendió desde siempre. La solución:

Una vez de cada cuantas, se fastidiará aquel que tenga prisa. Costa Rica con una mentalidad europea, ya no sería Costa Rica y talvez, ya no sería un país tan pura vida. Querer cambiar al país no es la opción correcta. Lo que corresponde es respetar a esta cultura, entenderla y adaptarse. 27

Dealing with complacency. -When you need something in a hurry, the best thing is to request it with humility and to explain the situation. Don’t forget, you are the one in a bind. In Costa Rica people are much more responsive when you speak from your heart. You will get a much greater commitment and better results appealing to their solidarity than by being arrogant. -Lower your expectations in regards to efficiency and always allow for a margin of delay and the unexpected.

Tal vez los siguientes consejos le orienten mejor… Lo que intentamos, es ayudar a los nuevos residentes a encarar el tema con un poco de humor, algo más de paciencia y estos cuantos consejos prácticos, siempre con el objetivo de que sus días también lleguen a ser totalmente… Pura Vida!
Para lidiar con el exceso de calma.
- Cuando uno necesita algo apurado, lo mejor es pedirlo con humildad y explicando su situación. A fin de cuentas, uno es el del apuro. En Costa Rica la gente es más fraterna cuando se le habla con el corazón. Conseguirá mucho mayor compromiso y mejores resultados apelando a la solidaridad que recurriendo a la prepotencia. - Disminuya sus expectativas respecto a la eficacia y siempre contemple un cierto margen de retraso o de imprevistos.

-To prevent misunderstandings when placing an order or assigning a duty, always explain in full detail what it is that you want done. Most uncomfortable situations are a result of error in the initial communication. If you do not speak Spanish well, it is wise to take someone with you to translate your instructions. This will help you avoid misunderstandings and will also assist you in a better negotiation. -If things don’t go as you expected, take a deep breath and then think of a solution. Skip the getting angry part. Don’t allow small inconveniences to rob you of your mental peace.

- Para evitar malos entendidos al encargar un trabajo, siempre explique con todo detalle lo que está solicitando. La mayoría de las situaciones incomodas se deben a errores de comunicación iniciales. Si no habla buen español, acompañarse de alguien que traduzca sus instrucciones le ahorrará los malos entendidos y le ayudará a una mejor negociación. - Si las cosas no salen según lo esperado, respire profundo y luego piense en una solución. Sáltese la parte del enojo. No permita que pequeños inconvenientes le roben la paz mental.
Consejos para vivir… Pura Vida: * Valore lo que tiene a su alrededor. El aire que respira, el agua que bebe, la brisa en su rostro, las caricias de sus hijos, ese mango jugoso, esa caminata en la playa, el atardecer, la noche, el día, sus amigos…Sienta más los sonidos, los aromas, los colores, las texturas, las sonrisas…
* Appreciate your surroundings. The air you breathe, the water you drink, the breeze on your face, the endearments of your children, that juicy mango, a walk on the beach, the sunset, the night, the day, your friends…Feel more deeply the sounds, the aromas, the colors, the textures, the smiles….
* Revalorice que es realmente importante para su felicidad y que no lo es. Concéntrese mucho en lo primero.
* Re-prioritize what is truly important for your happiness and what is not. Concentrate much more on the first.
* Quéjese menos de lo que le falta y aprecie más lo que tiene.
* Complain less about what you don’t have and appreciate more what you do have. * Celebrate and be grateful for the good things, from the smallest details to the largest achievements. * Send out good vibes and they will multiply.

Sto ince our perception of the size of the ocean is limited what we see on the horizon, its real greatness is often
underestimated. In reality, it’s size goes far beyond our imagination and hand-in-hand with that is the incredible diversity that one finds within it. In fact, two thirds of the earth is water and with several kilometers of depth, it holds an enormous amount of wonders and mysteries. What are we going to see? What is going to be our next surprise? These are, for my good friend Miguel and I, the most common questions that we ask ourselves at the beginning of each and every one of our expeditions. The funny thing about this is that each time, we always discover a new and different answer to that mystery. 30
A few weeks ago we were preparing for a photo and film mission near the Bat Islands on Gulf of Papagayo. As part of the preparation, we loaded all of our film into the vessel along with all our heavy gear, cameras and still photography. After an hour ride on the boat and just before our first immersion of the day, Miguel and I asked ourselves the usual question… And before we knew it, our next adventure was just knocking on our door. Suddenly, we found ourselves surrounded by a big group of mammals… “Are they dolphins” someone said? “Pilot whales?” And all it took was just a quick look between Miguel and I to realize that we had to jump in the water to investigate and document such an amazing event. They were False Killer Whales, not frequently seen in these waters.

ado que nuestra visión del tamaño del océano se limita a lo que vemos en el horizonte, su grandeza real es usualmente subestimada. Su tamaño sobrepasa por mucho a nuestra imaginación y esta grandeza va de la mano con las increíbles criaturas que lo habitan. De hecho, dos terceras partes de la tierra es agua, y con varios kilómetros de profundidad, alberga innumerables maravillas y misterios. Que encontraremos? Cual será nuestra próxima sorpresa? Estas son las preguntas que mi buen amigo Miguel y yo nos hacemos al comienzo de cada expedición. Lo simpático del asunto es que siempre encontramos una nueva y diferente respuesta a los misterios de cada expedición. Hace un tiempo estábamos preparándonos para una misión fotográfica y de filmación cerca de las Islas Murciélago en el Golfo de Papagayo. Como parte de los preparativos cargamos todo nuestro equipo para las películas y fotografías y… partimos. Aproximadamente a una hora de viaje y poco antes de nuestra primera inmersión planeada, Miguel y yo nos hicimos las preguntas de costumbre... Y sin darnos cuenta, una aventura inesperada vino a tocar justo a nuestra puerta. De un momento a otro, nos encontramos rodeados de un gran grupo de mamíferos…“Serán delfines?” Pregunto alguien. “Acaso son ballenas pilotos?” Solo tomó una rápida mirada entre mi compañero y yo para confirmarnos que teníamos que saltar al agua a investigar y documentar ese fantástico evento! Eran Orcas Falsas, un tipo de ballena que no se ve con mucha frecuencia en estas aguas! Y allí estaban, justo en ese lugar, justo junto a nosotros. Miguel con su cámara HD y yo con mi cámara de fotografías, ambos ansiosos, casi colgando en la orilla del bote ante la presencia de tantas aletas dorsales rompiendo la superficie y los sonidos de los soplidos de aire escapando de la espalda de esos animales. El Capitán Alex nos grito: “Están listos muchachos?” Su pregunta fue seguida de una mirada entre nosotros y una pausa muy silenciosa. Déjenme decirles, era una situación intimidante! Sentía el corazón listo para salirse de mi pecho! Una alza de adrenalina, atemorizante pero también excitante. Luego de una rápida mirada a la cara de nuestro capitán, recibimos su aprobación y nos lanzamos al misterio del día….

Right there on the spot, Miguel with his HD camera and I with my still camera, jumped in and hung at the edge of the boat. As we saw the tip of a dorsal fin breaking the surface, and heard the sound of air bursting out of the mammal’s back, Captain Alex yelled to us “Are you guys ready?” … Followed by a silent pause. Let me tell you, I was actually a little intimidated! I could feel my heart pounding so hard it felt like it was going to pop out of my chest. I felt a big surge of adrenaline; while it was scary it was also exciting. We shot a quick look of approval to our captain and then plunged into the mystery of the day… Taking a deep breath, Miguel and I went down under water, shoulder to shoulder, into one of the most memorable experiences we have ever had. The first time our ears submerged, we experienced the perfect connection between False Killer Whales and ourselves. Their sounds are formed by high and low frequencies; indeed a language we will never fully understand, but one we can definitely appreciate as music to our ears. Suddenly, a school of the False Killer Whales became as curious as we were! They gathered close to each other, like young kids playing on a soccer field, hugging and pushing each other to get as close as possible to what seemed to be two long legged humans with funny breathing tubes coming from their mouths. They approached me first, since I was in front of Miguel and I quickly put my face behind the camera’s eyepiece.
Hombro con hombro, respirando profundo, Miguel y yo nos sumergimos bajo el agua y nos adentramos en una de las experiencias mas memorables que jamás hemos vivido.Tan pronto nuestros oídos estaban bajo el agua, se estableció una conexión instantánea entre los cetaceos y nosotros. Su canto compuesto de frecuencias altas y bajas es por seguro un lenguaje que nunca llegaremos a comprender a plenitud, pero que ciertamente podemos apreciar como deliciosa música para nuestros oídos. Inesperadamente, un grupo de ellas se volvieron tan curiosas como nosotros. Se juntaron entre sí, como niños jugando en la cancha de fútbol, empujándose unas a las otras para acercarse lo mas posible a estos dos seres con aletas largas, con unos tubos raros que les salían por la boca y unos equipos sofisticados en sus manos. Se me acercaron primero ya que yo estaba delante de Miguel y rápidamente pegue mi cara al visor de mi cámara. Lo único que recuerdo es el cosquilleo que sentí bajar por mi columna y la sensación indescriptible que me corría por las venas. Yo simplemente no podía creer lo fantástico que era el vivir un momento tan fascinante mientras estas criaturas se paseaban tan elegantemente frente a nosotros! Miguel y yo celebramos con gritos, abrazos, brincos y muchos agradecimientos a la naturaleza por darnos este regalo!!! Al pasar de las semanas pero con las memorias de ese día aún muy vivas en mi corazón, me pregunto si las generaciones futuras podrán tener la oportunidad de vivir tal experiencia fantástica; de verlas, disfrutarlas y celebrarlas. Ese sueño se encuentra exclusivamente en nuestras manos. Lo que hagamos a la Madre Naturaleza determinara si nuestros futuros pequeñines podrán llegar a compartir este éxtasis. Obviamente, con compartir me refiero a mucho más que guardarles unas cuantas fotografías o unos segundos de video…

All I can recall is the rush I felt next to indescribable feelings in my veins. I just could not believe how amazing it was to witness this incredible creation of God moving so gracefully in front of Miguel and I. Our celebration was followed by yelling, hugging, jumping and cheering mother nature for such a gift. And as weeks have passed and my memories of that day are still alive in my heart, I wonder if future generations will have the chance of seeing it, living it and cheering it. The answer to that rests in our hands. What we do to mother-nature will determine this fact for our future little people,. C.A.R.E. (Coco Animal Rescue & Education), was born in Playas del Coco by a group of foreign residents and local veterinarians to ensure care and protection for animals while simultaneously educating the local population on correct care for them. Barely a year after its founding, their success record is outstanding.

(Coco Animal Rescue & Education), nació en Playas del Coco, como iniciativa de un grupo de extranjeros residentes y veterinarios locales, decididos a asegurar cuidado y protección a los animales y a la vez, informar a la población sobre como cuidarlos correctamente. A solo un año de su formación los logros son muy destacables. Preocupados por la creciente población de mascotas sin hogar, han montado un programa periódico de clínicas de esterilización y castración de bajo costo, con el fin de evitar que nuevos cachorritos nazcan en las calles sin nadie que los cuide. Como complemento, un activo programa de refugio ha permitido
Worried about the growing population of homeless pets, C.A.R.E has launched a program that provides periodic sterilization and castration clinics at a very low cost. The objective is to limit the birth of new puppies and kittens that will end up homeless and on the street with no one to care for them. To compliment this service, an active shelter program is rescuing several animals on the verge of death and subsequently placing them in new loving homes and off of the streets. Door to door educational campaigns have led to the discovery of numerous animals in very bad shape. In these instances, the owners are taught how to be better parents and how to improve the conditions under which their pets are kept. Through various means of communication, C.A.R.E has created awareness in the population regarding the care of pets. They instruct children and family members on the needs of their animals including subjects such as vaccination, feeding habits and illness prevention. At an organizational level, C.A.R.E has a team of approximately 20 permanent members and approximately 50 rotating volunteers. In total, they have been able to launch 7 different clinical sessions in which 130 surgeries have been completed. In sum, with this small effort alone, C.A.R.E has been able to prevent the birth of thousands of new puppies and kittens that would otherwise be born on the streets without shelter or care.

n 1972 when we were first starting our company, very few people knew the meaning of the word sustainability. The manner in which we conducted tourist activities back then was harmonious with the environment, however it was solely due to intuition. We were without awareness or understanding regarding the important social and environmental roles that our daily interactions had on the environment. Moreover, we were oblivious to the impacts of the tourist businesses in the communities they operated in. As a company, for the past 37 years, we have been sharing our beautiful country with friends from all over the world. We have been helping individuals build unforgettable memories of Costa Rica, memories which today are spread throughout every corner of the earth. For just as many years we have been working towards conservation in this country, continually taking action to ensure that it’s natural, cultural and social treasures are preserved and whenever possible, enhanced.
Social and environmental responsibility is no longer something that “should” be considered at companies. Instead, it is now something that “must” be taken into account. Today, sustainability is the only possible way for Costa Rica to be successful in the long run. All companies must understand this, incorporating these concepts at all levels of their organization and working to expand these values to suppliers and customers. In recent years Swiss Travel has gone beyond its traditional commitment and has implemented a complete system of Tourism Sustainability Management, incorporating its social, cultural, economic and environmental parameters into each of the processes of the company and in the activities it carries out. Swiss Travel is also forcefully infusing this culture and way of business into each and every one of the collaborators of the company. Years ago, Swiss Travel implemented a solid waste treatment plan, programs for energy optimization and water saving, as well as programs for the conservation of forests and protected areas. The sounds of Los sonidos de Ticolandia By: Jim Parisi

uanacaste has always been in a unique cultural bubble and is currently experiencing the flowering of a new generation of musicians that now sing to the whole country. Malpaís planted the seed a few years ago and it’s nice to see the movement blossom once more with the likes of Christian Pórras and his new CD, “Ticolandia”. Ticolandia floats out of the speakers, with lyrics full of local references, including peaceful volcanoes or butterflies that dance in the wind like leaves freed from their trees. Christian’s songs celebrate his country between two great oceans and the cultural mix of its people. And there is a good portion of coffee and humor, embraced in a poetic world of romanticism. Some of the stand-outs of the nine song album include “Somos”, where Pórras sings about Costa Rica as a cultural melting pot, and “Mi Canto”, the final song, in which Christian tells about the things in his country that motivate him to sing. Throughout the album, he has carved an easy-flowing, easily identifiable sound, with audio snapshots and postcards of his country.

unque Guanacaste se ha desarrollado siempre en una especie de una burbuja cultural últimamente está floreciendo toda una nueva generación de músicos que le cantan al país entero. El grupo Malpaís probablemente plantó la semilla hace unos años y hoy es bueno ver a este movimiento brotar en alguien como Christian Porras y su nuevo CD llamado “Ticolandia”. Este disco flota desde los parlantes con sus líricas llenas de referencias locales, incluyendo pacíficos volcanes o mariposas que bailan como hojas al liberarse de los árboles. Las canciones de Christian, celebran este país entre dos grandes océanos así como la diversidad cultural de su gente. En el disco hay buenas dosis de café, humor, poesía y romanticismo. Entre las piezas que sobresalen están “Somos”, donde Porras relata a Costa Rica como una fusión de muchas culturas o “Mi canto” donde Christian nos cuenta que cosas de sus país son las que lo inspiran a cantar. The park’s attractions include the mildly active Rincon de la Vieja volcano with its constantly active fumaroles and bubbling mud pots, relaxing hot springs and impressive waterfalls that appear as if out of nowhere in the middle of tropical rain forest that abounds with flora and fauna such as tapirs, monkeys, coatis, agutis and a boundless number of birds and insects. There are good trails, camping facilities and nearby hotels. The rough road (take a 4WD) is an experience in itself, but the beauty and diversity of the park makes a trip out there well worthwhile.

Santa Rosa National Park

This park is an incomparable example of tropical dry forest. Offshore are the Bat Islands, which provide exceptional sites for scuba divers. Witch’s Rock and Ollie’s Point located within the park are two worldclass surfing spots. Thousands of sea turtles arrive to nest on the beaches from July to December. In addition there is also the Santa Rosa lodge which is now a museum that commemorates the 1856 victory of an improvised costarican army assembled against North American filibusters and which today is one of the country’s main historical sites.

Los atractivos del parque son el suavemente activo Volcán Rincón de la Vieja (1895m) con sus constantes fumarolas, burbujeantes fuentes de barro, relajantes aguas termales terapéuticas e impactantes cascadas que aparecen de improviso en medio de un bosque tropical húmedo, lleno de abundante flora y fauna como tapires, monos, coatís, agutís e infinidad de aves e insectos. Hay buenos senderos, facilidades para camping y hoteles en las cercanías. El rudo camino (solo en 4x 4), es toda una aventura, pero la belleza y diversidad del parque hacen que valga la pena llegar hasta allá.
Este parque es una muestra completísima de lo que es un bosque seco tropical. Junto al parque están las Islas Murciélagos, un privilegiado sitio de buceo y Roca Bruja y Ollie’s Point, dos sitios de surf célebres a nivel mundial. De Julio a Diciembre, llegan a anidar a sus playas miles de tortugas marinas. Además, en el parque está la casona de Santa Rosa, un museo que conmemora la victoria en 1856 de un improvisado ejército costarricense contra filibusteros estadounidenses, y que es uno de los principales hitos de la historia del país.

The star of the park, Arenal volcano, is the most active in Central America and at night, offers impressive views of the crater with incandescent lava running out of it and down its slopes. A refuge for leatherback turtles that protects one of the world’s most important nesting sites for this highly-endangered species. These animals arrive every year between October and February. During the season all visitors at night (prime nesting hours) who come to see the turtles must go accompanied by a local certified guide. It is a dry tropical forest of 5,600 acres with 42 extraordinary subterranean caves and a look out point with views of the Tempisque River, the Golf of Nicoya and some of its islands. During all the year, one can see monkeys, deer, raccoons, ocelots, peccary, opossum, tepescuintle and anteaters, in addition to an ample variety of birds and plants typical of the dry tropical forests. There is a good information center at the park, picnic tables and trails in very good condition. A call the day before your planned visit is required to confirm the availability and to reserve the tour guides and the safety equipment you will need to carry. Son 2.295 hectáreas de bosque tropical seco con 42 impresionantes cavernas subterráneas y un mirador con vistas del río Tempisque, el Golfo de Nicoya y sus islas.Todo el año se puede ver monos, venados, mapaches, ocelotes, pecarís, coatís, martillas, tepezcuintles y osos hormigueros, además de una amplia variedad de aves y plantas típicas del bosque tropical seco.
