Biography

Introduction

"

In 1808, the Portuguese court who was running away from the French emperor, Napoleon, decided to move to the Brazilian colony.

" After a few years in Brazil, D. JoĂŁo, who was now the king of Portugal, decided to return to Portugal. His son, D.Pedro I, stayed in Brazil and declared independence in 1822.

" Brazil was much different than today... The capital used to be Rio de Janeiro, the country was governed by a monarchy, and it had slaves, native africans that were brought and forced to work in Brazil. 3

"

"

A young boy was born on December 2nd, 1825, who would later be known as D. Pedro II, son of D. Pedro I. His full name was Pedro de Alc達ntara Jo達o Carlos Leopoldo Salvador Bibiano Francisco Xavier de Paula Leoc達dio Miguel Gabriel Rafael Gonzaga.

At a young age, little Pedro lost his mother and at 5 years old, his father, D. Pedro I, left to Portugal. D. Pedro I left his young kids in Brazil so he could maintain the crown with his family while he was away in Portugal. !4

São Cristóvão’s palace, on Quinta da Boa Vista, Rio de Janeiro, was a calm place where the young kids lived with servants. During this time, receptions and parties never occurred.

I would like a present…just a paper and some pencils.

The little boy, Pedro, was educated all his life to be the emperor of Brazil. Everyday, he studied geography, art, writing, arithmetic, French, English, dance, and music. 5

"

As a boy, Pedro was never in very good health. Thus, he didn’t participate in physical activities but limited himself to a stroll in the park or horse riding lessons. For the majority of the time, the boy spent his time reading.

At 15, though very young, Pedro was crowned monarch with a big party. !6

" "

At 17 years old, D.Pedro II married to Teresa Cristina, an Italian princess. They had never even met each other until the wedding day; the arrangement was made by members of the government. 7

How I would love to be a school teacher.

D. Pedro II was an active member in institutions related to research and culture. He spent most of his time there. He was so fond of attending the Colégio Pedro II that he watched exams and assisted in the selection of teachers.

I was born to consecrate myself to languages and science…

Throughout his life, D. Pedro II learned to speak many languages such as latin, arabic, hebrew, and tupi. !8

"

The city of Petr贸polis was the fulfillment of a dream of Pedro II's father, who bought a farm and planned to build a palace on the land. This dream was realized by D. Pedro II and by the hands of German immigrants and slaves.

The Universal Exhibitions were big events all around the world where D. Pedro II presented Brazilian products and discovered the most recent inventions. 9

"

Brazil had some war time: civil wars to overthrow the monarchy and conflicts for territory. The war against Paraguay lasted many years and the government was weakened by the loss of soldiers and money.

Although Pedro II was against slavery, it was Princess Isabel, his daughter, who declared the end of slavery by signing the テ「rea Law in May 13, 1888. On this day, D. Pedro II was traveling in Europe. !10

"" "" "" "

In the last years of his government, Pedro II spent most of his time in Petr贸polis and the people were tired of having a monarch as a leader. In the streets, people were screaming for a republic. The Republicans won and D. Pedro II was forced to leave the country after nearly 50 years as Brazilian head of state.

After a trip to Portugal, Dom Pedro II decided to live in Paris, France. His desire to learn was always present and he was still surrounded by books until the last years of his life. One of his last acts was to donate his library to Brazil. 11

"

How was the Brazilian education during this time period...

The education of the Brazilian people was very different from the education of the monarch, for every ten Brazilians, only two could read.

" Slaves with rare exceptions, they had no access to education. "

Wealthy families sent their children to prestigious schools like ColĂŠgio Pedro II and then to a university in Europe.

"

To better understand...

Monarchy - Form of government in which the main power is in the hands of a monarch.

"

Republic - Form of government in which the people exercise their authority through representatives and for a limited time.
