Biography

Introduction Everything begins with an idea that ignites changes in the lives of community members. These changes may be in the areas of education, health, or the environment. For change to occur, it is necessary to create a project with steps for these changes. A social entrepreneur is a person who has an idea, implements the project, achieves positive results, and expands the project to serve more people. Most of the time, this does not happen quickly. It takes years to make the project a reality, involve people, and gather resources. A social entrepreneur is a very audacious and persistent person.

When Vera turned one year old, her parents prepared a party with a thousand sweets. There were bonbons, coconut truffles, plum candy, and other Brazilian delicacies, in addition to many relatives and friends.

5

The family lived in Bangú, a Rio de Janeiro neighborhood, where Vera’s father was the director of a textile factory. In addition to the family, the nanny, the cook, and the schoolteacher, lived at the home. The area was very poor.

6

During the daytime, Vera’s house opened its doors to the neighborhood children who came to play in the yard. Vera realized that she had more toys than the other children and every now and then would give one of her toys to a neighbor. 7

The nanny did not like that. One day, the nanny promised to give all of Vera’s toys to the neighborhood children if Vera continued to give away her toys. And one day, this actually happened.

8

Vera and her friends spent their days flying kites, and climbing trees. Her favorite game was running around the yard on top of the wall.

At bedtime, she did not want to sleep because she did not want to stop playing.

9

In the yard, Vera liked to write poems up in a mango tree. At snack time, Vera did not want to come down, so her mother found a good solution for the problem.

10

On holidays, the destination was the home of Vera’s grandmother in Curitiba, in the state of Paraná. It was a long journey, about 12 hours, but it was well worth the trip. What a great place!

11

CordĂŠlia created a school for her kids and the children in the neighborhood. At school, they made drawings, paintings, dances, and plays.

12

The schoolteacher read to Vera every night.

13

When she was ten years old, Vera went to study in a school in Copacabana and moved to live with her aunt and uncle. Her uncle was a doctor and her aunt wrote novels. The house of her aunt and her uncle was full of people, artists, and politicians, and full of love.

14

The years in the home of Vera’s aunt and uncle were full of studying and longing, as Vera only saw her parents on the weekends.

15

Vera wanted to be a doctor like her uncle and passed the exam to get into UFRJ, one of the best public universities in Brazil. After her studies, she worked in various public hospitals.

16

Institution Fundação Casa de Rui Barbosa The Rui Barbosa home is located on the site of one of the old properties in Botafogo, the preferred neighborhood for the aristocracy to live in the nineteenth century and the first decades of the previous century. The neoclassical style house, surrounded by a vast garden, was the residence of Rui and his family until 1923. In 1924, a year after his death, the government bought the site, including Rui’s library and archive. Four years later, it would also acquire the furniture. On August 13th 1930 president Washington Luis inaugurated the house as the first home museum in Brazil, a homage to his former political leader. On the occasion, each of the two lodgings gained a name commemorating the significant achievements of its owner. The original center of what is now the Rui Barbosa Home Foundation, the museum develops research, education, and conservation activities, in addition to promoting integration projects with the community.

Literary corner The Kitten
 * joão joão

Tiny – because he was so small Was the name I gave my kitty In São Cristóvão* He was as black as night And in a hammock* he slept Beneath a lovely mango tree The people who came To visit our home Found him rather odd That’s right A kitten asleep in a hammock Far from an ordinary sight I always heard “hey kid Is your cat from the Northeast (of Brazil)*?” On one fine day Moving to new neighborhood I decided to take my Tiny

32

I bundled him into a sack With a couple of holes And closed it up tight I stepped into the taxi With him And took such care He started to squirm Broke free And fled I learned then Sadly, that my Tiny Loved the house more than me I never saw him again, And still I worry After this sadness “…how will the rest of the life Of my Tiny be without me?” Glossary São Cristóvão: a neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro, renowned for a festival of Northeastern Brazilian food and arts Hammock: rede in Portuguese, traditionally used for sleeping in the Northeast of Brazil Northeast: Nordeste in Portuguese, region of Brazil commonly associated with rural poverty and strong traditions, heartland of much Brazilian culture such as music and dance, Northeasterners are often portrayed as “hillbillies” similar to stereotypes of American Southerners 33
