Biography

Introduction The landscape designer is a professional who reorganizes a landscape to attend to human necessities while also taking into account the preservation of the environment and the aesthetic of the land. The interest in the aesthetic, in gardens – it all dates back to ancient cultures. The Egyptians built pools that held fish and also kept their houses cool; in Ancient Rome, the Romans decorated their gardens with patios, sculptures, fountains and baths. During the Renaissance, while the English were searching for more liberty by way of closeness to nature, the Italians and the French designed their gardens rigorously, always searching for symmetry in the landscape. Today it is possible to admire landscaping projects in shopping centers, common areas shared between buildings, golf courses, residential areas and public space such as plazas and parks. The landscaper is someone who likes nature, art, and working with his or her hands. He or she also has creative vision.

Although he was young, in the house grounds, Robert accompanied his mother in the rose garden as she pruned the flowers.

It was with his beloved nanny, Ana Piaczec, that Robert learned to plant and care for the garden. It was this beginning of his passion for plants.

5

At home, he had classes in French and English, cared for the Garden, and played with his brothers. In conversations with his mother, he spoke Portuguese, but during family dinners, his father insisted that they speak German.

!6

On the weekends, his parents took him to see operas and ballets at the City Theater. What a spectacle!

7

At six years of age, he began to learn to sing with his mother, and at every party, he sang for the guests. It was the beginning of his passion for music.

!8

Robert’s parents cared greatly for their children’s education. After a trip to Europe, they returned with many German gardening magazines.

The young Robert adored the gift and devoured the magazines.

9

At nine years old, Roberto designs his first garden.

In life you must do what brings you happiness. So if you want to be a dancer, you have the right to be one, so long as you try to be the best.

11

At almost 20 years old, Roberto began to have eye problems and spent most of his time caring for his house garden. The family decided to go to Europe in search of an eye specialist.

At the time, the trip was by boat and took several weeks. The whole family embarked on the ship “the Wesser” for a long journey!

!12

In Switzerland, Roberto was cured of his eye problems.

The family took advantage of the time in Europe to attend museums, art exhibits, operas, and theaters Robert had music and painting classes during a Van Gogh exposition. He felt incredibly inspired. He thought to himself “my true calling is painting.”

13

In search of themes to paint, Roberto visited the Botanical Garden of Dahlem, in Berlin, where he was dazzled by the many Brazilian plants. He asked himself –“Why don’t they use these plants in the gardens in Brazil?”

!14

Upon returning to Rio de Janeiro, Roberto decided to study painting. And at the School of Fine Arts he met a group of Brazilian architects who were modernizing Brazilian architecture. Lucio Costa, vanguard architect and neighbor of Burle Marx, enjoyed the Marx family garden so much that he decided to invite him to design a garden at his house in Copacabana.

This was the beginning of his career as a landscaper.

15

Roberto’s gardens had great success and he was invited to work in Recife. After some years in Recife, Roberto returned to Rio de Janeiro, he began to study painting again. At that moment he had the opportunity to work as an assistant of Candido Portinari, his professor in mural production for a public building*. The following year, Roberto worked on a garden project for the same building. * Ministry of Education and Health, Capanema Palace.

!16

Even with so much work, Roberto continued painting. At thirty years old, he won the gold medal for the School of Fine Arts. During his life, he received many prizes, in Brazil and abroad.

17

In the middle of so many landscaping projects, Roberto learned to undertake expeditions in search of rare plants. And he loved this. After leaving there, he completed many expeditions in search of plants and gave his name to many of these plants.

!18

In his projects, Roberto used many native plants but many of these plants were not for sale on the market. Therefore, he and his brother decided to buy a site to plant seedlings. What a great idea! This was revolutionary at the time. So, in 1949, he bought the Santo Antonio da Bica property, an old coffee plantation in Rio de Janeiro.

Since his childhood, Roberto was a great collector. In addition to plants, he collected popular artwork, shells, art books, and semiprecious stones from Brazil...

!20

Almost fifty years old, Roberto completed the monumental Flamengo Park, in Rio de Janeiro. In his lifetime, he completed more than 2000 projects throughout the world. Some of these were the East Park in Caracas, Venezuela, and the Copacabana boardwalk in Rio de Janeiro.

21

When he was 75 years old, Roberto Burle Marx donated his belongings to the Brazilian government, and so the Roberto Burle Marx foundation was created. Thanks to this act, today it is possible to visit his property.

!22

Roberto Burle Marx died when he was 84 years old. As a landscaper, he modernized Brazilian gardens. Before Marx, Brazilian gardens attempted to copy European gardens. Outside of landscaping, he was a painter, tapestry designer, and ceramicist‌. An all-around great artist!

23

The steps of a landscaping project in a private residence: First, one must have a thorough conversation with the client in order to understand the objective of the project and available resources. Next, the landscaper studies the natural elements like the sun, the climate, the local vegetation, the level of the land, etc. The next step is the creation of plans involving the topography, the plants which will be used in the project, patios, sidewalks and other details. After this stage, the project is presented to the client, and it is common to have alterations until the final version is developed. Sometimes, the landscaper also oversees the actual completion of the work.

INTERESTING THINGS ABOUT POPCORN The exact origin of popcorn is unknown. What is known is that, much before Columbus arrived to America, the indigenous people of the northern continent were already eating popcorn. They began to make it by putting the entire ear on a stick and carrying it to the fire. Afterward, they threw loose grains directly onto a low fire. There was a third method,, more sophisticated, which consisted of cooking the corn in a clay pot filled with hot sand.

Some indigenous American tribes said that spirits lived inside each grain of popcorn. The spirits were at peace until their “houses were heated, after which they became furious, making the grains jump and finally explode, freeing the spirits.
