To give recognition to former students of the college who have thrived in their chosen fields, students from Broadcasting 4A pioneered Dangal ng Kolehiyo, the first alumni awards of the College of Arts and Letters (CAL) and of the university, May 4 at Valencia Hall.

Dangal ng Kolehiyo Alumni Awards, which was created under the undergraduate study of a group of students from BAB 4A, is divided into three different categories namely Young Alumni Awards, Outstanding Alumni Awards and Distinguished Alumni Awards.

According to Princess Navarro, one of

the members of the pioneering group, they have encountered problems such as insufficient funds and manpower before launching the event.

“Medyo struggle kami pinansyal kaya kinailangan talaga namin na humingi ng tulong ‘di lang sa kolehiyo natin kung ‘di maging sa iba’t ibang tao para lang maipush itong event na ito. During the event, I think ang naging problem is sa manpower. Kulang kami sa komite,” Navarro stated.

For Thy Life bags SiBul VIII’s best film award

After the film viewing, results from the consolidated votes of the jury and viewers were revealed.

Mark Justin Antonio of BAB 3A broke down in tears as his film “For Thy Life”, which is about extra judicial killings (EJK) and President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs, was announced as SiBul’s Best Film.

As one of the highlights of the College of Arts and Letters’ (CAL) awareness week, “For Thy Life” and three other entries from the 8th Sine Bulacan (SiBul) Film Festival received recognition last May 3 at the Robinson’s Place Movieworld, City of Malolos, Bulacan.

“For Thy Life”, “Evadere”, “Krusanto” and “Sa Katapusan” comprised the line-up of films for this year’s SiBul

which focused on the theme “Beyond the Frames”.

Jose Emmanuel Eugenio, SiBul director, elaborated the meaning behind the said theme.

“To shed some light doon sa mga socially relevant issues at mai-reflect dito sa mga films at mabigyan natin ng pansin ‘yong mga issues na dapat talaga nating tinatalakay,” he said.

“Gusto kong magkuwento about sa lipunan. EJK because nakakabahala na ang laban ng pamahalaan sa droga. For Thy Life is my personal message sa lahat ng mga Pilipino na makakapanood nito,” he shared.

“For Thy Life” also won Best Production Design, Alt MD’s Choice Award and the Most Liked Teaser award.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo Magsakay of BAJ 3A, won as Best Director for his film “Krusanto”.

Roncales receives Huwarang Mag-aaral 2018 title MIKAELA VICTA

College of Arts and Letters (CAL) named BA Broadcasting 4C student, Spencer Roncales as this year’s Huwarang Mag-aaral during the closing ceremony of the college’s 10th anniversary celebration at Bulacan State University (BulSU) Valencia Hall, May 3.

Roncales expressed his gratitude to the college for obtaining the said award.

“Punong-puno ako ng pasasalamat lalo na sa ating kolehiyo, sa Kolehiyo ng Arte at Literatura at saka doon sa bumubuo ng komite sa pagpili ng Huwarang Magaaral… at s’yempre para sa aking sarili dahil alam ko na ‘yong mga ginawa ko pala ay nabigyan ng pagkilala ng ating sariling kolehiyo,” he said.

However, he shared his doubts on whether his achievements and abilities are enough to be qualified for the title.

CAL conducts per program sessions on 10th year anniversary ANDRELYN DEB DOMINGO, ROCHELLE ACSE AND EMMANUEL RAYMOND FERRER Ani ng Sining became an avenue for learning for College of Arts and Letters (CAL) students as different practitioners were invited to share their knowledge in the first day of the 10th anniversary celebration of the college, April 30.

Broadcasting and journalism students gathered at Valencia Hall where Ron Lopez, ABS-CBN’s DZMM correspondent and CAL alumnus discussed about media literacy in the age of fake news while Joey Hernal, a reporter from CLTV shared his knowledge about citizen journalism.

Regemrei Bernardo, Head of Mass Communication and Performing Arts Department (MCPAD) stated the importance of aspiring media practitioners to be aware about the spread of false information.

To bring the College of Arts and Letters (CAL) students together, annual contests, Media Olympics and Tintagisan transformed into group-based competitions in this year’s college awareness week, May 2 and May 3.

A total of eight groups composed of CAL students were formed together to collaborate in competitions for Media Olympics and Tintagisan which was held separately in the past CAL week celebrations.

“Paparo” became an entry for Cine Republica 2017, Sine Gitnang Luzon, Cinema Rehiyon IX, North Luzon Film Festival, and Viddsee Juree, which is a competition for Asian short films.

“Krusanto” also bagged the Viewer’s Choice Award, Best Sound Design and Best Cinematography.

Magsakay, comparing “Krusanto” with his previous film, “Paparo”, shared that both films fall under the same genre which he admitted as his style. “‘Yong favorite genre ko kasi na ginagawa sa mga pelikula ko ay may touch of Filipino culture lagi at mga stories na unknown pero nag-e-exist. Isa pang common characteristic ng “Krusanto” at “Paparo” ay pareho silang mabibigat na films,” Magsakay said.

Sa tema na Defend Press Freedom: Creating Critical Campus Press in Critical Times, pinangunahan ng Pacesetter, opisyal na publikasyon ng Bulacan State University (BulSU), ang taunang seminar para sa mga miyembro ng pahayagang pangkampus ng unibersidad na sinusundan ng press conference at ng Gawad Galing Plaridel (GGP), kung saan binigyang parangal ang mga mahuhusay na mamamahayag pangkampus.

Tinalakay ni Kevin Facun, isa sa Ten Outstanding Student of the Philippines at alumnus ng unibersidad, sa ginanap na seminar ang kaniyang proyekto kasama ang mga dating kaklase na tumutulong sa mga sanggol na nangangailangan ng breast milk.

Kasabay ng pagdiriwang ng ika-10 taon ng Kolehiyo ng Arte at Literatura (KAL) at buwan ng Panitikang Filipino, itinampok ng Publikasyong Patlang ang kanilang folio na pinamagatang “Tudla” at ang librong “Nasa Puso/d” ng Lunduyan ng mga Bulakenyong Artista at Manunulat (LAMBAT) noong ika-30 ng Abril sa Bulacan State University (BulSU) Hostel.

Ang “Tudla” ang kauna-unahang isyu ng Patlang, opisyal na publikasyon ng mga mag-aaral ng Malikhaing Pagsulat (MP) na nasa pormang pamphlet at libreng naipamahagi sa mga mag-aaral.

“Ito ay libre dahil nagnanais ang patlang na marami ang maka-access sa aming mga likha,” sabi ni Rissia Lleva, punong-patnugot ng nasabing publikasyon.

Samantala, ang ikalawang libro ng LAMBAT na “Nasa Puso/d” ay inilathala ng Balangay Productions sa pakikipagtulungan sa National Book Development Board (NBDB), ahensya ng gobyerno na layong suportahan ang industriya sa pamamagitan ng pagtataguyod ng mga

CAL also launched its own theme song entitled “Sulong, CAL” during the opening ceremony of the college week.

The theme song’s lyrics was composed by Elimore Cabanilla of BATA 4A and the musical score was created

by Gillian Rose Bongkingki who is also from BATA 4A. Moreover, the song was performed by fourth-year Theater Arts student Melbelline Caluag.

According to Cabanilla, because of her excitement, she was able to come up with the lyrics after she was requested to write a song for the college.

“May something sa puso ko na tuloytuloy lumabas habang nagsusulat ako.

Upang ipagdiwang ang nagdaang buwan ng Panitikang Filipino at ika-10 anibersaryo ng Kolehiyo ng Arte at Literatura (KAL), isinagawa ng Hiraya Kolektib at Patlang ang Bagsakan Palabas noong Mayo 2 sa tapat ng Valencia Hall.

Bukod sa mga binasang akda ay naipalabas din sa nasabing aktibidad ang ilang mga eksena mula sa pelikula ng direktor at alumnus ng KAL na si Mark Mirabuenos na nasaksihan hindi lamang ng mga mag-aaral ng KAL kung ‘di pati ng mga mag-aaral mula sa ibang kolehiyo “Bali itong Bagsakan Palabas ay pinagsama-samang performatibong pagtatanghal ng mga tula, awit at pagpapalabas ng maikling pelikula,” pagpapaliwanag ni Manuel Diel III, presidente ng Hiraya Kolektib.

Dalawang taon nang isinasagawa ang Bagsakan Palabas ngunit inamin

ng Patlang, publikasyon ng Malikhang Pagsulat, na sila pa rin ay nangangamba sa bilang ng mag-aaral na dadagsa sa kanilang programa.

“No’ng una may pangamba na baka walang mahikayat na pumunta dahil nagsimula kami na kami, kami lang tapos dumagsa na lang. ‘Yon din siguro ‘yong disadvantage sa pag-o-organize ng event, walang kasiguraduhan kung makikipag-cooperate ‘yong mga dumadaan,” sabi ni Rissia Lleva, punongpatnugot ng Patlang.

Sa kabila ng kawalan ng tiyak na dami ng manonood, naging matagumpay ang Bagsakan Palabas dahil sa pagtangkilik ng mga BulSUan. “Successful siya. Marami kasi kaming nahikayat, maraming pumunta, nagawa siya nang maayos. Nakakagulat nga na ang daming nag-perform na dumadaan lang naman,” ani Lleva.

CAL students support One Blood in Bulacan ANGELICA NIKKI CRUZ AND JAMIE KAREN HERNANDEZ To patronize the advocacy of One Blood in Bulacan, which aims to help Hemophilia patients, students from the College of Arts and Letters (CAL) attended the benefit concert at the Valencia Hall of Bulacan State University, April 15.

According to Danah Mae Isidro, representative from the group of BAB 4C students, whose research focused on producing the concert, they have chosen the Hemophilia Advocate Philippines (HAP) to be their beneficiary because there is a limited amount of support that hemophilia patients receive in the country. “‘Yong Hemophilia, hindi pa sinasabatas ‘yong bill nila para sa mga may sakit na Hemophilia. Napili namin ‘yong hemophilia kasi walong organizations, nongovernment organizations lang mayro’n sa buong Pilipinas...‘Yong cancer, helping the poor, poverty, ayon natutulungan na ng government. Itong Hemophilia wala silang nakukuhang support sa gobyerno,” Isidro stated.

She also shared that with the little support hemophiliacs receive, patients suffering from Hemophilia need to undergo lifetime medication because there is still no cure for this kind of disease.

SU Journalism Society (JournSoc) which revolved around the theme “Panulat Bilang Sandata Patungo sa Malayang Pamamahayag” turned into a contest on collaborative publishing.

According to JournSoc President Dean Carlo Ventura, since the annual contest was already on its sixth year, the organization came up with changing the contest’s format.

“Kasi ‘di ba ang CAL week natin ngayon designed siya to be collaborative...collaboration of programs of College of Arts and Letters therefore naisip namin na since we practice Tintagisan annually… why not make it a collaborative effort and make it collaborative publishing,” Ventura explained.

The JournSoc president also shared that the original idea for this year’s competition was to conduct the collaborative publishing competition as well as individual writing contests but since the organization lacked funding and manpower, only

the collaborative publishing was able to push through.

Furthermore, Ventura also shared that for the next Tintagisan, its format will depend on the decision of the officers.

“Titingnan po natin ‘yong output ng competition kung maganda ‘yong evaluation ng ating officers and ng adviser then why not and katulad nga ng sabi ko kanina pwedeng nandyan pa rin ‘yong writing competitions, pwedeng nandyan pa rin ‘yong collaborative publishing, depende po,” Ventura said.

Shaira Nabong of BAB 3A shared what she learned after participating in the collaborative publishing for the first time.

“Natutunan ko talaga na dapat marunong kang mag-manage ng time mo pagdating sa mga sinusulat mo at saka dapat mayro’n kang unity talaga sa mga kagrupo mo kasi mahihirapan kang matapos ‘yong trabaho… kahit sabihin mo na kaya mo namang magsulat mahirap lalo na may time constraint,” Nabong said.

Ayon pa kay Galvez, hangad din ng literary group, na gumagabay sa mga mag-aaral na lumalaban sa mga nasabing kompetisyon, na kilalanin sila ng unibersidad bilang isang organisasyong magpapakilala sa pangalan ng BulSU sa larangan ng literatura.

“Hindi siya [literary group] nire-recognize ng university, hindi katulad ng mga Teatro Entablado… recognized sila, alam na bahagi talaga sila ng university pero tayo wala tayong tatak, wala tayong pangalan,” sabi ni Galvez.

Nais din ni Galvez na magmula sa KAL ang magiging literary coordinator kung sakaling maging isa na silang ganap na organisasyon.

“I was challenged and at the same time, sabi ko nga hindi man ako ang maging literary coordinator ‘pag dumating ‘yong time na ma-institutionalize siya but ang aim ko ay manggaling dapat ang literary coordinator sa CAL,” saad ni Galvez.

Nagbukas ang nasabing programa sa pagtatanghal ng mga mag-aaral na nagwagi sa nakaraang CAASUC at CIRPS sa iba’t ibang kategorya kagaya ng radio drama, pagku-kuwento, storytelling, extemporaneous speech, pagsulat ng sanaysay, short and sweet play, talumpati, at essay writing.

Sinundan ito ng pagbibigay ng sertipiko ng pagkilala sa mga mag-aaral na nagbigay ng karangalan sa kolehiyo at sa unibersidad.

Sa kabilang banda, sumasang-ayon naman si Ronaldo Magsakay, nakakuha ng ikaapat na puwesto sa essay writing noong nagdaang CAASUC, na mabigyan ng unibersidad ng pagkilala ang kanilang grupo.

“Magandang idea ‘yon [pagbuo ng institution] kasi do’n mapi-filter out talaga ‘yong may gusto at saka ‘yong may ibubuga talaga kasi ‘yong iba parang nahatak na lang, ‘yong iba naman parang tama lang ‘yong skills nila,” aniya.

“All the speakers have a vision that they carry to what they wanted the student journalists to learn that’s why as one of the listeners, I have learned something useful that I can apply not only in the technicalities of writing but the heart for journalism,” sabi ni Cruz.

Inanunsyo naman noong ika-5 ng Mayo ang mga nanalo sa naganap na GGP kung saan naiuwi ng The Communiqué ang parangal na Best Performing Publication. Samantala, nakuha naman ng The Mentors’ Journal ng Kolehiyo ng Edukasyon ang ikalawang puwesto at nakamit ng CS Wizards ng College of Science ang pangatlong puwesto sa nasabing parangal.

The criteria in choosing the Huwarang Mag-aaral were composed of the student’s academic achievements, seminars attended and results from the interview with a panel of judges.

“Ang naging criteria, academic achievement ‘yan ‘yong General Weighted Average for the last two semesters, seminars attended, national, regional, local and then if they are members or officers of an organization and then ‘yong interview,” Benedicta Buenaventura, CAL Wellness Coordinator, said.

The selection, according to Buenaventura, were done by three judges who represents each department of the college considering the said criteria.

She also explained the essence of being named as the college’s Huwarang Mag-aaral.

“Ang Huwarang Mag-aaral, ‘yong bang huwarang mag-e-excel siya sa lahat ng aspeto hangga’t maaari ng pagiging isang estudyante,” Buenaventura explained.

Roncales left a message persuading his fellow students to be aspirants of the said title.

“Sa mga hindi pa nag-aaply kung alam mo sa sarili mo na sapat ‘yong kakayanan mo kung alam mo sa sarili mo na Huwarang Mag-aaral ka, mag-try ka kasi wala namang masama dahil sarili mo naman ‘yan, hindi mo ninakaw yan, pinaghirapan mo ‘yan,” he said.

“Bilang estudyante at miyembro ng KAL, kailangan talaga natin malaman at makisalo sa mga ganitong usapin para sa gayon, tayo ang isa sa magtuturo sa mga iba pang nabibiktima lagi ng fake news ng mga paraan kung paano malalaman at paano ito maiiwasan,” Luntao said.

Meanwhile, Theater Arts (TA) students got their skills tested in the Improv workshop under One and a Half Men’s Karl Jingco, where Jingco dared TA students to think fast and to unleash the artist within them.

“Improv is one of the center of practicing your art it helps you mold your inner artist with improv by creating a fun environment na hindi nakaka-pressure, hindi

nakakatakot,” Jingco shared.

Furthermore, Balangay Productions’ Ronald Verzo shared his experience and struggles as a writer to students of Malikhaing Pagsulat (MP).

He urged MP students to enhance their skills while simultaneously enriching the dying culture of writing about their own communities.

“Ang mindset natin sa pagbuo ng library ay hindi lang pagkuha ng libro mula sa labas kung ‘di pagbuo ng sarili nating koleksyon ng lokalidad na kinabibilangan nila and this become part of our identity, ng ating kinagagalawang lugar,” Verzo expressed.
