Welcome to the second issue of JLM Drive - the glossy automotive magazine- meetsproduct catalogue. In this issue we have a special focus on the 5 new products we’ve launched in the last 10 months. We’re always quick to launch when we can see a real need or can anticipate one. I was asked by a journalist recently what drives us to launch new products at such an unrelenting pace. Whilst I know that in some cases we’re entering product categories where similar products exist, we always add something different and something better than the standard fare. Every product we launch is tested to rigorous standards in our laboratories. And each one comprises a high quality blend that can be trusted 100% to do what it says on the label. Most importantly we develop products for the trade – professional motor mechanics working in the most challenging environments and rightly demanding consistency in product quality and performance. Catalytic Exhaust One of the most common causes of MOT failure is due to poor emissions. JLM products will, in most cases quickly cure the original cause of the problem, reducing the emissions to an acceptable level and avoiding expensive repair charges.

Engine Chemistry teaches that engine oil is unstable and decomposes in the presence of oxygen at high temperature. The process, called oxidation, occurs naturally after exposure to normal operating conditions for extended periods of time and is accelerated by exposure to severe operating conditions or to excessively high temperatures. Alternatively, accelerated oxidation may be triggered by a combination of any or all of these factors.

Air Intake / EGR Even though EGR valves provide vast environmental and air quality benefits, they are also associated with issues such as increased exhaust particulates, misfiring or hard starting and detonation, problems which are most commonly experienced by diesel car owners.

Underbody protective coating is used to protect the vehicle chassis from the external environment ensuring its integrity and safety. Underbody coating plays a vital role in the service life of a vehicle. In general there is a requirement to spray this protective coating during the manufacturing process. However, due to the increasingly competitive nature of new car sales, car producers are under pressure to reduce manufacturing costs. This has resulted in underbody coating being eliminated or used sparingly on a vehicle. Consequently the service life of a car greatly reduces.

Exhaust Smoke When there is smoke coming from the exhaust system of a vehicle, it signals an issue with the internal workings of the motor. This is a very noticeable symptom of failure in the engine. White, black or blue smoke can be emitted from the exhaust system with each color indicating a specific problem.

Valve, Autogas Valve Seat Recession (VSR) is the tendency for the valve seat sealing face to shrink upwards into the cylinder head. When this occurs, the valve heads and stems are pulled further up into the cylinder head to meet the shrunken (recessed) valve seats by the powerful springs used to close the valves. You could describe this as a kind of valve sealing self-adjustment. Eventually, the point is reached where the valve head and stem have moved so far that the top of the valve stem is touching the cam follower and tappet continuously. There should be a clearance gap here which normally ensures full and correct sealing of the valve. If there is no clearance gap, the valve may be held slightly open by the contact with the cam follower or tappet. If this happens the cylinder cannot be truly gas tight. And this causes the affected cylinder to produce much less power than normal or, none at all. This is because the affected cylinder will have low (or no) compression due to the leakage at the valve.

Radiator maintenance helps the engine operate at an optimal temperature. And maintenance helps extend the efficiency of your radiator and cooling system components; ultimately avoiding expensive radiator replacement.

Cold temperatures cause wax to drop out of diesel fuel, coagulating together clogging the tank and engine filters and shutting down operations. The Cloud Point is the point at which diesel fuel becomes cloudy from waxes lumping together. The colder the weather, the more that paraffin will drop out of the fuel and gel together. Larger paraffin chunks will clog filters and stop the fuel from flowing through.

DPF Diesel Particulate Filter

Bacteria

The Diesel Particulate Filter traps harmful diesel gases that are cleaned regularly by a process called DPF regeneration. The collected diesel soot particles are burnt off at high temperatures resulting in an “ash-like� after product. After the regeneration of the DPF the cycle of collecting harmful exhaust gases can restart again. Unfortunately, DPFs do fail and many diesel car owners do not realize how they are causing a blocked DPF. The main reasons for DPFs failing are due to car owners not driving enough miles and, driving too frequently in city areas. Other common reasons for DPF failures are: short journeys, clogged EGR Valve, faulty fuel injectors, incorrect engine oil, turbo failing, high mileage cars.

Oil products will, like other organic products be broken down by micro organisms. Micro organisms in this instance are bacterias, fungus and algae. With this type of diesel contamination, the organisms will, through their metabolism, convert some of the diesel components to substances that will be damaging to a combustion engine. A slime-like substance is formed in the diesel. This coats the tank and fuel system, blocking the pipes and filters. Within this coating are millions of micro-organisms per gram of diesel. Microorganisms attack and oxidise surfaces in tanks and fuel systems causing substantial damage.

Eventually, the point is reached where the valve head and stem have moved so far that the top of the valve stem is touching the cam follower and tappet continuously. There should be a clearance gap here which normally ensures full and correct sealing of the valve. If there is no clearance gap, the valve may be held slightly open by the contact with the cam follower or tappet. If this happens the cylinder cannot be truly gas tight. And this causes the affected cylinder to produce much less power than normal or, none at all. This is because the affected cylinder will have low (or no) compression due to the leakage at the valve.

Cold temperatures cause wax to drop out of diesel fuel, coagulating together clogging the tank and engine filters and shutting down operations. The Cloud Point is the point at which diesel fuel becomes cloudy from waxes lumping together. The colder the weather, the more that paraffin will drop out of the fuel and gel together. Larger paraffin chunks will clog filters and stop the fuel from flowing through.

The Diesel Particulate Filter traps harmful diesel gases that are cleaned regularly by a process called DPF regeneration. The collected diesel soot particles are burnt off at high temperatures resulting in an “ash-like� after product. After the regeneration of the DPF the cycle of collecting harmful exhaust gases can restart again. Unfortunately, DPFs do fail and many diesel car owners do not realize how they are causing a blocked DPF. The main reasons for DPFs failing are due to car owners not driving enough miles and, driving too frequently in city areas. Other common reasons for DPF failures are: short journeys, clogged EGR Valve, faulty fuel injectors, incorrect engine oil, turbo failing, high mileage cars.

Oil products will, like other organic products be broken down by micro organisms. Micro organisms in this instance are bacterias, fungus and algae. With this type of diesel contamination, the organisms will, through their metabolism, convert some of the diesel components to substances that will be damaging to a combustion engine. A slime-like substance is formed in the diesel. This coats the tank and fuel system, blocking the pipes and filters. Within this coating are millions of micro-organisms per gram of diesel. Microorganisms attack and oxidise surfaces in tanks and fuel systems causing substantial damage.

Technicians were taught how to use their judgements, when selecting the most appropriate chemical. Iron-cerium based additives, such as JLM's DPF Regen Plus, are still useful, if used in the correct concentrations and conditions, to reduce soot build-up in the case of low mileage/urban driving conditions. A combined DPF and injector cleaner (such as JLM's Catalytic Exhaust Cleaner) can be used as an aftersales product, as preventative maintenance, too, but also acts as an injector cleaner and cetane booster. Yet, more expensive alternative products (such as JLM's DPF Particulate Filter Cleaner) contain platinum-cerium catalysts that cleanse the filter without causing temperature spikes and should be employed when a filter is moderately blocked with soot.

For severe blockages, where the cleaning solution has to be injected directly into the DPF via the pressure differential sensors’ flexible pipes, the V50 was used to demonstrate the two stage process of JLM’s DPF Clean & Flush. The session included critical advice to prevent the solution from being forced through the EGR circuit, on severely-blocked filters, and into the intake, which risks hydraulicking the engine. The course provided a fascinating introduction for garages to tackle DPF work confidently, while maximising profitability, customer satisfaction and value. It also succeeded by providing JLM wholesalers with sufficient technical knowledge to support garages that may not have access to the detailed level of advice that is available to the DPF Doctor network.

When fitting a new turbo, rebuilt or second hand, it always takes up to 30 seconds for the initial supply of oil to reach the bearings. This running-in time (without lubrication) may cause premature wear or seizure. Adding JLM Turbo Pre Lube before fitting a new turbo and the special fully synthetic MoS2 formula will provide superior lubrication and prevent damage to it. JLM Turbo Pre Lube is suitable for all types of motor oil.

BorTec Oil Additive is a new generation, ash-less boron ester based friction reducer and anti-oxidant, which adds unique features to any standard motor oil. Performs extremely well in synergy with traditional friction modifiers in common engine oils and in particular in mid- and low SAPS oils. The highly polar ester borate forms a protective friction reducing layer of boron nitride under pressure and heat protecting all engine parts most susceptible to wear. The BorTec leaves a coating which remains on the surface of internal engine parts, even when the engine is off, providing immediate anti-wear protection at start-up.
