Hello! A warm welcome to JLM Drive. In this issue we bring you content that really packs a punch from motoring journalist Rob Marshall’s assessment of the pandemic and how mechanics can support their customers in the new normal to Darren Darling’s regular column with some special feedback from three of his DPF Doctors. There is much more of course. We talk to five JLM distributors about why they decided to promote our trade trusted products in their territories; we introduce our top 10 products fit for the demands of any workshop and present an amazing report from Australia with two renowned technicians sharing their experience using our products. Thanks to Elliot Altobelli from GCG Turbochargers our Australian/New Zealand distributor for sending us these case studies. Since the last JLM Drive we have been navigating through the global pandemic and have used this time to focus on product development and on supporting our distributors within their territories. We have refreshed the JLM brand too, making it more appealing and even more relevant to our trade customers and their customers. Our aim was to keep those elements of our brand that have a global appeal and strong identity whilst taking it through a professional refresh. You will see our new strapline throughout the magazine: ‘We understand cars’- which pretty much sums up what we’re all about. As the ink was drying on JLM Drive we were launching new adverts and editorial/social media content for our 40 strong global network of distributors to use for in-territory promotions. Of course, JLM Drive includes the essentials that appear in every issue such as our catalogue of products including the new products we have launched. Catalytic Exhaust One of the most common causes of MOT failure is due to poor emissions. JLM products will, in most cases quickly cure the original cause of the problem, reducing the emissions to an acceptable level and avoiding expensive repair charges.

Engine Chemistry teaches that engine oil is unstable and decomposes in the presence of oxygen at high temperature. The process, called oxidation, occurs naturally after exposure to normal operating conditions for extended periods of time and is accelerated by exposure to severe operating conditions or to excessively high temperatures. Accelerated oxidation may be triggered by a combination of any or all of these factors.

Air Intake / EGR Even though EGR valves provide vast environmental and air quality benefits, they are also associated with issues such as increased exhaust particulates, misfiring or hard starting and detonation, problems which are most commonly experienced by diesel car owners.

Radiator Radiator maintenance helps the engine operate at an optimal temperature. And maintenance helps extend the efficiency of your radiator and cooling system components; ultimately avoiding expensive radiator replacement.

DPF Diesel Particulate Filter The Diesel Particulate Filter traps harmful diesel gases that are cleaned regularly by a process called DPF regeneration. The collected diesel soot particles are burnt off at high temperatures resulting in an “ash-like� after product. After the regeneration of the DPF the cycle of collecting harmful exhaust gases can restart again. Unfortunately, DPFs do fail and many diesel car owners do not realize how they are causing a blocked DPF. The main reasons for DPFs failing are due to car owners not driving enough miles and, driving too frequently in city areas. Other common reasons for DPF failures are: short journeys, clogged EGR Valve, faulty fuel injectors, incorrect engine oil, turbo failing, high mileage cars.

Turbo Turbo means all systems go given it has been developed to considerably increase the power of a gasoline or diesel engine. But what do you do when that fine pacer gradually gets contaminated under the hood?

Underbody Underbody protective coating is used to protect the vehicle chassis from the external environment ensuring its integrity and safety. Underbody coating plays a vital role in the service life of a vehicle. In general there is a requirement to spray this protective coating during the manufacturing process. However, due to the increasingly competitive nature of new car sales, car producers are under pressure to reduce manufacturing costs. This has resulted in underbody coating being eliminated or used sparingly on a vehicle. Consequently the service life of a car greatly reduces.

Exhaust Smoke When there is smoke coming from the exhaust system of a vehicle, it signals an issue with the internal workings of the motor. This is a very noticeable symptom of failure in the engine. White, black or blue smoke can be emitted from the exhaust system with each colour indicating a specific problem.

Valve, Autogas Valve Seat Recession (VSR) is the tendency for the valve seat sealing face to shrink upwards into the cylinder head. When this occurs, the valve heads and stems are pulled further up into the cylinder head to meet the shrunken (recessed) valve seats by the powerful springs used to close the valves. You could describe this as a kind of valve sealing self-adjustment. Eventually, the point is reached where the valve head and stem have moved so far that the top of the valve stem is touching the cam follower and tappet continuously. There should be a clearance gap here which normally ensures full and correct sealing of the valve. If there is no clearance gap, the valve may be held slightly open by the contact with the cam follower or tappet. If this happens the cylinder cannot be truly gas tight. And this causes the affected cylinder to produce much less power than normal or, none at all. This is because the affected cylinder will have low (or no) compression due to the leakage at the valve.

Winter Cold temperatures cause wax to drop out of diesel fuel, coagulating together clogging the tank and engine filters and shutting down operations. The Cloud Point is the point at which diesel fuel becomes cloudy from waxes lumping together. The colder the weather, the more that paraffin will drop out of the fuel and gel together. Larger paraffin chunks will clog filters and stop the fuel from flowing through.

Bacteria Oil products, like other organic products are broken down by micro organisms. Micro organisms in this instance are bacterias, fungus and algae. With this type of diesel contamination, the organisms will, through their metabolism, convert some of the diesel components to substances that will be damaging to a combustion engine. A slime-like substance is formed in the diesel. This coats the tank and fuel system, blocking the pipes and filters. Within this coating are millions of micro-organisms per gram of diesel. Microorganisms attack and oxidise surfaces in tanks and fuel systems causing substantial damage.

Brakes Brake fluid is an essential and increasingly important element in vehicles. At the same time, driving assistance systems such as ABS and ESP are becoming increasingly complex and critical. This makes the task of brake fluid more important than ever. JLM aftermarket brake fluid and clutch fluid meet the highest quality requirements set by the automotive industry for products.

DPF Problems Are the New Pandemic By Darren Darling, Founder of The DPF Doctor Network, and JLM brand ambassador The last 8 months have been strange to say the least, as we deal with the new norm. Like all business owners, we faced uncertain times when COVID-19 came along to make things ‘interesting’ and wondered if we would ever recover after being closed for many weeks. However, as the months pass by we are seeing more DPF problems than ever. With travel restrictions in place, we have seen a huge upturn in blocked DPFs due to driving conditions. Our 100 strong network of workshops are busier than ever.

We are usually presented with problem vehicles that other workshops struggle to fix, but we are also seeing a high volume of blocked DPFs from short journey driving. This opens a new avenue of preventative measures to keep the DPF clean as there is little point cleaning the DPF without taking appropriate measures to stop it blocking up again. It is important that we give our customers sound advice on how to avoid the problem reoccurring and that we recommend the right products. We have seen fantastic results using JLM DPF Regen Plus and JLM Catalytic

Exhaust Cleaner Diesel to keep DPFs clean while only doing short journeys. By way of example my own vehicles have not had a long journey in several months but the DPFs are clean and healthy thanks to JLM. There has never been a better time to promote JLM additives as a preventative measure and of course, the DPF cleaning range as a real problem solver. It is effective, safe and does exactly what it says on the tin. The DPF pandemic is here but JLM Lubricants have the vaccine. DPF Doctor Vehicle Case Study: Volvo V50 1.6D Just as JLM Drive was being signed off for printing, this car was brought into our workshop. It presented with DPF and mass air flow fault codes 2A30 Particulate Trap and 136F Mass Air Flow Sensor. During our assessment we quickly identified that the mass air flow fault was caused by a split boost hose which in turn was causing the DPF to block. We replaced the boost pipe and cleaned the DPF with JLM DPF Clean & Flush. Because the car had been running for many months with the boost leak, we then carried out an intake clean using the JLM Diesel Extreme Intake Clean. After an extended road test, the car was running like a dream and the DPF was nice and clean. One very happy customer. Job done.

JLM Lubricants’ products are an integral part of our service. I used the DPF cleaning products with the professional DPF cleaning toolkit (100% success) on the first two vehicles. I know from experience that had they been taken to a dealership, a new DPF would have been recommended at huge cost to the customer and completely unnecessary. For example, I had a Nissan Qashqai with a severely blocked DPF. The garage referring it had removed it for cleaning. During the road test the car broke down again. We had to work backwards on this job, cleaning the DPF before the full assessment. We used the JLM Professional DPF Tool kit and after the 3 stage process the DPF pressure came down from 2500mbar (with back pressure sensor disconnected) to 2mbar – an unbelievable result. I also use the JLM Petrol Catalytic Exhaust Cleaner, the diesel version and, the oil flush on every service. I use the Diesel Extreme Clean for more severe issues, sticking turbo vanes and engines that are running rough due to poor quality fuel and carbon build up and am now using he JLM Extreme Air Intake Toolkit.

Whilst we have been involved in DPF cleaning with different products and brands it hasn’t always been successful. I have used many products in the past from the top brands to the cheapest. I started using JLM Lubricants’ products several years ago and after Darren’s training am now using their Extreme Air Intake Toolkit. I was very impressed with the outcome and now I’ve gained knowledge of their products I know how to use them and can see the benefits to our business and our customers. We’ve seen more vehicles with DPF faults during lockdown. But the DPF is not always the problem. For example, a 2012 Ford Fiesta 1.4 CDTI car that had been used for short journey driving was producing excessive white smoke. We carried out a DPF assessment which showed the DPF filter was in good health, but the injectors were sticking. We used one dose of JLM Extreme Clean followed by an extensive road test. Problem solved.

Barry Lawson, Ewan Lawson Motors We use a wide range of JLM Lubricants’ DPF products. Which product to use comes down to what we find during the assessment. If a DPF is slightly outside of its specification, a can of the JLM Diesel Particulate Filter Cleaner added to the fuel tank along with an extended road test is an excellent way of bringing it back in line to the specification. It’s that simple. We get vehicles in non-start conditions because the DPF is badly blocked. Here we use the JLM Cleaning Flush Pack. This is injected directly into the DPF using the JLM DPF Toolkit. This saves on labour costs because the DPF doesn’t need removing. No investment in special DPF machinery and it works every time. The products and toolkit are simple to use and little training is required. We always advise customers on the importance of prevention. For this the JLM DPF Regen Plus is a good in tank additive to use every 7-8 weeks.

5 Distributors talk JLM How long have you been selling JLM products? ANTONIS Digiparts has been selling JLM products for 10 years now. In 2010, LPG business was growing rapidly in the Greek market so we started stocking a modest amount of LPG products such as the Valve Saver Kit and Valve Saver Fluid, but as time’s gone on and the brands have grown, so has the variety of JLM products we offer. BRETT GCG Turbochargers have been the JLM Distributor for Australia and New Zealand since 2018. ERICH We have been selling lubricants in Germany for 20 years but started selling JLM products in 2016. Prior to this we were looking for a dynamic and modern addition to our product range, so when we found JLM Lubricants GmbH it was a fantastic opportunity we had to take.

MIKE I discovered JLM products almost 10 years ago when I saw their original DPF Cleaner online. JLM had minor sales of their LPG valve saver in the UK, but with growing issues surrounding DPF and diesel emissions, I could see an opportunity to take the brand national. We placed our first stock order in April 2011 and have not looked back since! TOMAS We have been selling JLM products for 6 years now, albeit only a few units of Valve Saver Fluid as our product range was far more modest than it is today. We had a car running on LPG which is actually why we bought JLM Valve Saver Fluid; not just for our own use, but to sell to our customers as well. As time went by, we were able to start offering a full range of JLM products.

MIKE Initially, I saw an opening for a high quality DPF cleaning additive within the UK. Diesel cars were being heavily promoted as the ‘clean alternative’ for motorists, but the downside was the complexity of the emissions’ control system, which was causing various problems for vehicle owners. JLM products offered a simple, yet effective solution that could get diesel motorists back on the road with minimal hassle. I also recognised that Gilbert shared the same ethos as me when it came to building a brand with quality products, very similar to what I had done with our own K-Seal Coolant Leak Repair brand. Unlike other US suppliers we encountered, Gilbert was prepared to support us and adapt to the specific needs of the UK market. TOMAS Our company, AWD Auto has been selling car care products, oil, and additives since 2010 but we were searching for high quality products we could import to Slovakia. Stop press: more help for GDIs. While our dedicated additive for GDI fuel injectors is proving its worth, even it cannot cleanse parts that are untouchable. Consequently, JLM Lubricants’ developmental team is not standing still. A significant and recognised challenge with these direct-injection petrol units involves the inlet manifold and cylinder-head tracts developing an internal deposit that can become so severe that it restricts movement of the inlet valves. Understandably, no fuel additive can provide a solution. The situation arises from sticky viscosity improvers in the oil becoming deposited on the inlet surfaces, which originate from the crankcase ventilation system. These attract solid particles from the combustion gases that enter via the Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve. The high heat levels that are typical of modern GDI applications bake the resultant contamination into a stubborn, rubbery-textured substance, which continues to build if ignored. While most removal techniques involve either extensive dismantling, or mechanically invasive methods, JLM Lubricants continues to follow its philosophy of offering fast technical solutions through intelligent chemistry. Our MD, Gilbert Groot, explains: “Providing an easy, quick-to-use aerosol cleaner that focusses on removing the deposits from around the inlet valves especially is our latest venture. It’s All About the Brand… A look at the new look created for JLM by leading creative agency Brandidos, based in Amsterdam, also the global headquarters of JLM. JLM came to Brandidos with this question: “Could you look at our brand, our identity, look and feel with a view to refreshing it so that it’s contemporary, relevant and it has real impact?” Looking at how the brand had evolved we formed the opinion that a refresh would benefit JLM. It was time to communicate from a brand perspective what makes JLM distinctive. Of course, the market – mechanics, motorists and influencers know JLM from its ‘lubricants’ or ‘fuel additives’, but that does not necessarily make JLM, JLM! We could see that JLM needed a story, a distinctive brand identity to stand out and command attention in their competitive international market. The first step was to create a new payoff and a new look and feel (with the payoff being the start of a story). Elliot mentioned in a recent call that the mechanics they supply JLM products’ to are real die-hard fans. And here are two of them - professional mechanics sharing their experience of using JLM Lubricants products.

In their own words… Simon Keppie, owner of Carbon Cleaning Australia “We are specialists in emissions systems, DPF and engine carbon management solutions for all makes and models of cars. We’re a mobile service, working at the motorist’s location be this home or work. We clean their vehicle engines using hydrogen electrolyte and JLM Lubricants. We recently had a call from the owner of a Range Rover. The dashboard had lit up like a Christmas tree with multiple faults found through the system. The motorist took their car back to the dealership and was quoted for replacement EGR, DPF and major works a massive $17,000! We assessed the engine and found that carbon build up had caused the EGR valve to block and a series of other issues came up because of this. We carried out a thorough clean of the intake using both our hydrogen cleaner and the JLM Intake Extreme Clean & Flush. The EGR valve restored to function correctly. The DPF was still showing high pressure and soot content, but this was no match for JLM DPF Clean & Flush! Once cleaned we took the car out for an extended road test. A few fault codes

Recently we were sent a Fiat 500 1.3 on the back of a tow truck with absolutely zero power. Without engine fault codes we searched manually through the system to find some mechanical and electrical failures putting 500mBar of blockage in the DPF. Demand spike for used cars - With fewer people using public transport and new hybrid/EVs being relatively expensive, demand for used cars is rising, especially diesels in Europe. This makes it more likely for the public to have older vehicles repaired, rather than scrapped. More shorter journeys - With social distancing measures being in place and an increasing number of employees working from home, plan for more problems caused by short journeys, such as DPF blockages, and GDI intake/ fuel injector contamination.

Stale fuel - With most EU and North American nations selling E10, be wary that the ethanol-laced petrol tends to absorb more water during the winter. This affects stored vehicles, those used infrequently and newer Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) models in particular, which may take several months to consume a tank of fuel. The result is poor engine running, higher emissions, an increase in internal contamination and a heightened risk of a breakdown. Cutting corners - Not that we are suggesting that a professional would do so but, as most of our economies are experiencing recessions, customers are likely to afford less on repairs and they may place pressure on you to reduce costs. Obviously, you should resist doing so but consider that appropriate additives, dosed correctly, can help to not only reduce repair costs but also act as preventative maintenance. Playing catch-up - Many cars spent 2020 covering a lower mileage than usual, coupled with some countries extending their annual/biennial roadworthiness inspections (such as the MOT Test). Many owners have postponed garage visits as a consequence, which is not helpful, because multiple short trips necessitate more maintenance, not less. Just like our esteemed leaders, we at JLM Lubricants do not hold a crystal ball and cannot predict precisely how every citizen in every nation will be affected. Yet, we can lean on our expertise and experience to assist you with preparing customer vehicles for potential restrictions during winter. After all, an engine that refuses to start in an emergency situation could be life-threatening. Similarly, a breakdown might not only be a safety risk but also can stretch resources of emergency services.

Once a saturation point is reached, an incombustible and useless ethanol/water gunk falls to the bottom of the tank, leaving a sub-standard low-octane fossil-fuel derived petrol remaining on top of it. While JLM’s E10 fuel treatment prolongs fresh petrol’s shelf-life, advise customers to keep their tanks brimmed to reduce condensation from developing in the void that is occupied by fresh air. While elderly petrol produces harmful deposits, short journeys accelerate their production further. This is down mainly to an engine working below its optimum working temperature, a situation that also increases internal wear and threatens reliability. Further complications stem from ill-informed advice that encourages owners of seldom-used cars to start their engines at least weekly and leave them idling for 15 minutes to keep the 12-volt battery charged. We do not recommend this, not only because of the increased contamination and wear it inflicts on the engine but also the exercise is unlikely to replenish the charge needed to start the engine in the first place. JLM Lubricants recommends that using a smart charger to keep the battery charged fully is a superior technical alternative.

A downward spiral results, creating even more deposits, which clog EGR valves and engine intakes, especially on Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engines. Diesel vehicles are not immune, either. Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs) tend not to reach sufficiently high temperatures on low-speed drive cycles to regenerate, resulting in blockage. Some owners believe that running the engine at high speeds at full throttle will clear the system. In reality, they are inviting further mechanical damage. Solutions to resolve high DPF soot loadings are best addressed using mechanically sympathetic, gentler methods and not heavy-handed aggression. Maintenance: playing catch-up Even after most national lockdowns were relaxed in the early summer, some of the affected motor vehicles have not recovered from the impact. Concerns about spreading the virus has led many motorists to avoid garages, compounded by some governments extending time limits for mandatory roadworthiness inspections, such as the MOT Test. Naturally, this also risks scheduled maintenance becoming overdue, the frequency of which is linked to not just mileage but also time. Therefore, it is up to garages to communicate actively with their regular customers, inviting them to have their cars serviced, to prepare them before the colder weather arrives. One of your tasks must be

A quality engine oil flush plays a vital role to cleanse the crankcase and extend the protective properties of fresh lubricant, while a decent fuel injector cleaner dissolves accumulations from the fuel system that may have originated from expired petrol, or diesel. To add reputational value to your business and to provide extra assistance for your customers, consider recommending JLM’s fuel additive range, which they can dose into the tank themselves at a later date. With our short-term movements being dictated by government responses, JLM Lubricants highlights that its new-generation oil fortifier protects engine internals, regardless of the restrictions that may, or may not, be placed on motorists’ freedoms.

The present uncertainty is not helping any of us. As motor trade professionals, all we can do is advise customers and prepare their motorcars for either storage, or an unusually high number of short journeys, while not prejudicing the necessary protection required during extended high-speed trips. Real-world enhancement While chemists engineer modern lubricants to tolerate extended drain intervals, their sophisticated additive packs can still be depleted prematurely. Contamination by old and expired oil remains a particular problem, not helped by some cars having their drain plug positioned above the lowest point of the sump. While a quality pre-drain additive (such as JLM’s Oil Flush Pro) helps to dislodge any sludge from within the crankcase and hold it in suspension, up to half a litre of old oil can remain. The residue contaminates the new lubricant, reducing its working life, all thanks to poor sump design. The JLM Bortec Oil Additive is a supplement that not only bolsters the stock lubricant’s ability to keep combustion byproducts in suspension but it also assists with anti-ageing, by supporting the oil’s additive packs. Yet, neither does the additive interfere with the engine lubricant’s basic chemistry, nor does it clog oil filters. This is only part of what our Bortec oil additive can do and explains why we are extremely proud of it. Wear protection, where wear occurs most Despite modern engines boasting huge developments over those from the days of carburettors, most internal wear occurs during cold starts. After shut-down, the oil must resist gravity and cling to the metal surfaces, poised to keep the various moving parts separated on engine restart. However, there is an inevitable delay between the crankshaft turning and oil flow being restored, which results in metal-tometal contact. Consider also that oil pressure might not reach satisfactory levels, until after the

engine has fired. Through its primary ingredient of boron nitrate, the JLM Bortec Oil Additive’s superior friction-reducing ability lessens the resultant wear levels experienced during cold starts, when the primary lubrication film has thinned, or collapsed. A further advantage is Bortec’s ability to cling to metallic surfaces. Therefore, should an engine not be started for several weeks, the oil continues to coat and protect the iron and steel components against corrosion, caused by condensation of the natural air that is present within the crankcase. Bortec: Not a one-trick pony While the JLM Bortec Oil Additive helps to protect engines against elevated wear levels, associated with cold starts and short journeys, its protective qualities must continue at the other extreme. While most sump temperatures do not venture beyond 150 degrees Celsius, it is worth noting that a primary function of any engine lubricant is to transfer heat energy away from far hotter parts of the engine. Many other oil fortifiers, based on molybdenum disulphide, or even Teflon, lose their lubrication qualities, or even oxidise, when exposed to around 300 degrees Celsius. One of the reasons why our chemists chose boron nitrate as a key ingredient was down its ability to tolerate temperatures of three times higher than those more traditional additives without significantly sacrificing its protective qualities. With modern GDI engines running at elevated temperatures, the hightemperature protective qualities that Bortec offers are worth noting, especially on those units fitted with stop-start, or mild-hybrid, technologies.
