Unlocking Profit Down the Pipe Diesel Dirt
Hello! Hello and welcome to the latest JLM Drive. As usual, it’s an issue like no other simply because when we start planning the magazine our team goes back to the drawing board to discuss a raft of brand-new content. And crucially what makes it into the pages and what’s left on the cutting room floor! It has been a challenging period like no other with every business in the automotive sector touched by the pandemic to a greater or lesser degree. Logistics, product production, product development - all have been affected. What seemed pretty straightforward a few years ago now takes more planning and a bigger share of resources. However, today’s challenges also present us with an opportunity to think differently and to come up with solutions to ‘get back to better’ – our prevailing philosophy. So, new product development has continued apace as you will see in this issue and as a brand we continue to grow and excel in existing and new markets. So, what can you expect to see in JLM Drive? Aside from our catalogue which is always covered, there are interesting and thought-provoking features from Darren Darling, founder of The DPF Doctor network and a longstanding JLM ambassador. We look at the growing trend of ‘Repair don’t Replace’ - why motorists and technicians benefit. Esteemed automotive journalist Rob Marshall addresses the subject of contamination in GDI engines and direct injection diesel engines. We have practical marketing tips from the global bestselling author Dee Blick. Incidentally, Dee also found time to interview me to celebrate a JLM milestone anniversary. Our resident social media superstar Sabrina Pace reveals some top tips on how to be sociable in business. And you can discover what 5 JLM distributors have to say about JLM and the products that are in demand in their territory. I’m delighted to see Stephen Kasapis, the DPF Doctor network brand ambassador for Australia making a guest appearance talking about damaged DPFs and why DPF training is key to putting the brakes on what is now a global problem. As always, I extend an invitation for you to contact me if you would like to share your feedback on JLM Drive or if you’re interested in looking at what it takes to become a JLM distributor. JLM has a strong presence in 40 countries, but we have bold ambitions to conquer the world, one region at a time. We can only achieve this by working with exceptional people- JLM fans that just so happen to be accomplished distributors, connecting our iconic products to the technicians in their territory. Until next time!

Please keep me clean with the Direct Injection GDI Injector Valve Cleaner. Cleaner. In combination In combination with with the the GDI InjectorValve Cleaner. Direct Injection Cleaner.
‘Where there’s muck, there’s brass’ While this northern English saying highlights that dirty tasks are lucrative, Rob Marshall finds it applicable to preventing and solving GDI coking issues, particularly when combined with a dash of knowledge and a shot of JLM Lubricant’s chemical know-how.

Conflicting decisions are made in the name of environmentalism. GDI technology is a case in point, which became popularised as Europe particularly developed an obsession with tailpipe carbon dioxide emissions. In many ways, GDI achieved the political aim. Adding a high-pressure fuel injection system and placing the injectors directly within the combustion chambers reduced greenhouse gas outputs and made the engine more efficient than those fitted with the previous port (or indirect) injection technology. Yet, there were downsides. The main (often forgotten) issue was that the engines became dirtier. They also became more polluting. Conservative estimates state that cancer-causing particulates increased by over 1,000 times on GDIs, because the petrol/air mixture is not mixed thoroughly within the air intake, as was the situation beforehand. In Europe, at least, reduced CO2 emissions were being prioritised at the expense of air quality; as made evident by the original Euro VI particulate limits for petrol engines being raised to match diesels. Over twenty years since GDI became popular, the situation is only now being addressed, with gasoline particulate filters (GPF) appearing on some models.
6
Getting down and dirty The situation becomes even worse as the car ages. The sooty exhaust gases are admitted into the air intake by the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve. While this situation would not cause a problem usually, the air intake’s internal surfaces tend to be oily, thanks to the positive crankcase ventilation system. These situations cause a perfect storm, because particulates from the exhaust gases stick to the oily tract instead of passing through it. Over time, the contamination builds to such an extent that the intake becomes restricted, strangling the engine of air. To complicate matters further, the high heat levels (especially with turbocharged GDIs) bake the accumulations into a stubborn, rubbery deposit. The fuel injectors face a different set of challenges. Not helped by their finer tolerances, their relocation means that they face the full force of the combustion process, instead of being protected by the intake valve. Further complications include increased levels of ethanol in petrol, as well as stop-start technology, both of which can promote deposits that affect the delicate spray
7
pattern adversely. As GDI fuel injectors cannot be remanufactured currently, taking preventative measures against deposit accumulations is a primary recommendation that any responsible garage should make to its customers during routine servicing visits.
elevated oil levels, caused by fuel contamination, is not an operation reserved just for diesels. He reports that, should the injectors be blocked even partially, petrol can drip from them after the engine is switched off, which washes down the bores and into the sump.
Stefan Fellmann
MD at ESM Autogas Technnik Triptis Triptis, Germany
Barry Lawson, DPF Doctor The winning combination Based in Larbert, Scotland, Ewan Lawson Motors is a garage that believes in precautionary action to prevent GDI contamination from becoming an expensive problem. Its proprietor, Barry Lawson, tells JLM Drive that: “As we use JLM products during routine servicing, we find that our regular customers rarely return with engine running problems. On GDI cars, JLM GDI fuel system cleaner will be used automatically during servicing, along with JLM’s engine oil flush.” Yet, when presented with a poorly-running GDI engine, Mr Lawson emphasises the importance of fast, efficient diagnostics: “Firstly, we scan for typical fault codes that we expect to see with misfires, such as P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304 and those relating to fuel mixture, including P0171 and P0172. When conducting live diagnostics, we also examine the injector opening times closely. Should an injector be contaminated, its opening time increases to deliver more fuel. Checking the short and longterm fuel trims, allied with the misfire counter, lets you narrow the diagnosis to a particular cylinder.” Mr Lawson also advises fellow professionals that checking for
8
Clearly, such faults undermine the whole efficiency, reliability and CO2-reducing credentials of the GDI engine. Furthermore, fuel injector contamination also increases the already high levels of sooty exhaust gases, which accelerate the rate of intake deposit build, making the situation even worse. Unfortunately, the only real solution is dismounting the inlet manifold to remove the deposits mechanically. Yet, JLM Lubricants can still assist with this operation. Our EGR cleaner can treat the exhaust gas recirculation system after the manifold and cylinder head tracts have been cleaned manually. Furthermore, the JLM GDI injector cleaner is formulated to tackle the deposits that afflict GDI injectors and the chemical formulation is not too aggressive to harm them internally. While a garage can profit from the labour fees involved with such extensive dismantling, it commits the business to purchasing, maintaining, storing and running expensive equipment. As Ewan Lawson Motors testifies, prevention is better than cure but this need not sacrifice profitability, as Barry Lawson advises:
“We have been using the JLM GDI Injector Cleaner for 12 months now and really love the product. It has been shown time and time again on vehicles that the fuel quality in Germany is anything but good and, especially with gasoline direct injection, the injectors get dirty and cook on a regular basis. Before making the move to JLM’s product we had been using a product from a well-known automobile manufacturer but were dissatisfied with the results. So, we began testing the JLM GDI Cleaner extensively including using it on vehicles that we could only class as ‘Hopeless Cases!’. To give an example of how incredible the JLM GDI Injector Cleaner is at doing exactly what it is supposed to do, we have fixed many vehicles. One especially stands out; a VW Caddy CBZ. This car had contaminated nozzles and a lean run-in gasoline of over 50%! 40 litres of fuel and a can of the GDI Injector Cleaner meant that the standard width fell back to only 10% - within the first 100 km. The customer was happy because he was renting out an extremely expensive repair of over 800 €. We therefore recommend using the JLM GDI injector cleaner every 20,000 km. It is money wisely spent for the professional mechanic and their customers.”
“We emphasise to customers the importance of not just having the car serviced regularly but we also supply them with cans of GDI cleaner, so they can dose it to the fuel every three months. The aim is to get the customer to spend a relatively small sum with you every quarter, which helps to maintain loyalty, rather than hitting them with a large repair bill later on.”

The Famous Five!
No issue of JLM Drive would be complete without a feature on some of our incredible distributors. So, say hello to five distributors from all corners of the globe from Australia to Ireland, Japan, and Slovakia!
SK Carbon, Japan SK Carbon’s owner had an old friend who was asking us to help to find a good and reliable underbody coating source from overseas. We found JLM and the rest as they say is history! Currently, we distribute JLM underbody coating 1L, 20L, underbody coating spray and accessories such as spray guns for underbody coating, the DPF Spray and the DPF cleaning and flush fluid pack. We import JLM products from JLM in Amsterdam. We do JLM inventory management and sell JLM products in the main to car parts retailers in Japan. What do we like about JLM? Well, they are a good company with good people. We have been working with JLM for 10 years now and so far, no problems with their products.
Kalimex, UK J&S Automotive Distributors, Ireland We started distributing JLM products in 2012 with 2022 marking our 10th Anniversary of selling JLM in Ireland. We continue to be delighted with the success which has grown year on year as have our marketing efforts promoting the JLM brand and the product range in the trade media and through our own in-house promotions. Regular targeted marketing has really paid off. We are very much a marketing and sales led business and are in weekly contact with our stockists through face-to-face visits, phone calls and e-marketing campaigns. We support our customers – mostly the independent motor factor stockist by promoting JLM Lubricants’ products to their trade customers – the professional motor mechanic so they in turn can support their local motor factor. Our current 5 bestselling products are: 1. J02260 JLM DPF Fluid 1 Litre PSA regeneration fluid 2. J02220 JLM Diesel DPF Spray 400ml 3. J02360 JLM Diesel Extreme Clean 1000ml 4. J02210 JLM DPF Cleaner (Sold Single) (375ML) 5. J02710 JLM Diesel Air Intake & EGR Cleaner 500ml

However, we never rest on our laurels so imminent campaigns will see us promoting the JLM Professional DPF toolkit and the flush and clean kits. Our team love selling the JLM Diesel Extreme Clean, EGR Valve Cleaner and Turbo Cleaner. We have over 145 team members so JLM is always being talked about throughout the day! Why do we like selling JLM products to the professional motor factor and their customers – the professional motor mechanic? That’s an easy answer! A JLM product does exactly what the can says it will do. JLM has a proven pedigree. People understand the research and development that goes into each product before it is released. JLM also has the backing of Darren Darling for any technical queries that may arise. Finally, the very creative team that is Gilbert Groot and Co is always on hand with the exact information that the end user needs to succeed. They also support us with our many marketing campaigns.
Kalimex has been distributing JLM Lubricants’ products in the UK since 2011 so we are celebrating over 10 years of a great relationship! Kalimex was already distributing some high-quality repair products, including our K-Seal Coolant Leak Repair and Quiksteel epoxy putty. Our business motto is “Innovative products designed to keep you moving” so when I first saw the original JLM DPF Cleaner I realised it would be a perfect fit for our product range in the UK. I got to know Gilbert and realised that we have a lot in common in terms of brand vision and marketing strategy. I could see the ambition that he had for the JLM range. And to be fair we both have big goals and bold ambitions many years later. This was very important for me, knowing that JLM would be behind us in helping to build the UK market; that they were a brand for the long term.
our initial focus was on the diesel additives, so these are our bestsellers (units sold) now. However other products such as the Turbo Cleaner, GDI Injector Cleaner and Bortec Oil Additive are very popular too. In fact, despite 2021 being a tough year with the pandemic affecting our trade customers, forcing many to close temporarily, it was a record-breaking year for our JLM product sales. Premium, trade trusted products remain in high demand. We sell these supplies in the thousands to many stockists 1. Diesel DPF Spray 2. DPF Cleaner 3. DPF Clean and Flush Fluids 4. DPF Refill Fluid 5. Diesel Emission Reduction Treatment
Despite the growth in hybrid and electric vehicles, diesel cars are a huge part of the UK car market. They ‘suffer’ a variety of problems related to their complex emissions’ control systems. Consequently,

I believe that JLM products are in demand with the professional motor mechanic because they know that JLM products really do work. With such high levels of trust, they can offer them with confidence to their customers to use as problem solvers in between servicing and for maintenance in between workshop visits. Because JLM was a new entrant to the automotive aftermarket in Slovakia, most of our customers put JLM products to the test on their own cars before recommending them to their customers. When they saw the results, the orders came flooding in. JLM products are in demand with the professional motor mechanic because they consistently deliver. They really do work!

Global bestselling author Dee Blick put Gilbert Groot, the founder of JLM Lubricants under the spotlight in this special interview which marked JLM’s 10th anniversary at the time of going to print. 1. What impact has the global pandemic had on JLM Lubricants? The global pandemic has impacted us in many ways. Not so much our operations as we have a modern set up when it comes to the software programmes we use, and everything is cloud based. So, the ‘stay at home’ restriction did not have any adverse effects. It was business as usual, and we remained in close contact with our team using video calling. The travel restrictions and the wholesale cancellation of trade shows made us rethink our global communications’ strategy with our distributors and their networks. Of course, everything went online to live video calls with video seminars on sales, product training and marketing. We strengthened our relationships with our distributors which was a win-win for both sides. Our relationship with our network has never been better. Logistically however there have been significant changes, especially on the supply side. This was largely due to the unexpected growth of some markets recovering at a super-fast pace and the disruption of the sea freight (containers). We have been confronted with various price increases, long lead times for new products and unreliable sailing dates for container shipments to JLM distributors overseas. To help counter these problems, we have invested heavily in stock, quadrupling stock on our bestsellers. We now plan purchases way ahead of time to ensure secure supply and pricing. It’s no easy task! And finally, sales. In 2020 we registered record JLM sales and 2021 was again a record year, topping 2020’s figures. So, despite the pandemic and its ripple effects we have managed to improve, step-up and sell more!
2. You have 40 distributors in 40 countries, each with a different car parc. How can the JLM Lubricants’ product portfolio serve countries with different requirements? Our strategy is to offer a full range of products that matter to the professional motor mechanic the world over. But every market, every country has its own characteristics regarding the fuel mix and general age of their national fleet of passenger cars. One of our strengths is that as a relatively small and agile brand we can adapt swiftly to changes and to meet specific demands from our distributors. That’s why it is crucial to have those close working relationships. They understand their market better than us. >>>

3. Which territories offer growth potential for JLM in the next 5 years? Our primary focus will be on growing our business with our current distributors. But we will also strengthen and improve our European network. We have a few unclaimed territories in Europe, so I would ask anyone interested in looking at the benefits of being a JLM distributor to get in touch. We will also expand our network in Southeast Asia. All in all, more than enough to keep us focussed for the next 5 years. 4. Tell us more about JLM’s ongoing campaign of ‘repair don’t replace’. Many technicians are yet to buy into the fact that modern day chemicals can help them to do their job. Often the use of a chemical is cheaper than replacing a component. This of course benefits the motorist. So, we continue to reach out to car mechanics globally showing them what JLM products can do and how they help in their daily work of fixing cars. If a repair can be made with a chemical this has to be better than using a replacement part – for all involved including the planet. 5. Which JLM products do you anticipate will be in universal demand in the next 5 years? The JLM GDI Injector Cleaner (in tank additive) together with the JLM Direct Injection Valve Cleaner (aerosol) are at the top of the list. In the EU 50% of petrol cars have Gasoline Direct Injection engines. And every new car is now fitted with a GDI. So, these engines are rapidly taking over but they do present with contamination problems that require different cleaners. Technicians are becoming aware of the problem but the need for these products is growing at a much faster rate. Inevitably it is the technicians that are recognising the need and acting on it that are generating additional business by attracting clients with cars presenting with these typical GDI problems.
I am excited that we are offering this product. But we are at the beginning and are yet to find out how this filter will behave. But when the demand is there, we have the supply covered! Finally, JLM is of course well known in the industry for leading the Autogas industry with Valve Seat Recession Protection (VSRP) and our specialized DPF cleaning product range is supported by The DPF Doctor Network. Because the professional trade is satisfied with the quality of our products, they naturally want to find out more about our full range. We have some of the best problem-solving products in the world plus excellent conditioners and oil additives. So, we expect to be selling an even wider range of products in the coming years. 6. Looking at JLM Lubricants today – what are you especially proud of?
J00075PR JLM Counter Display
I am proud of the fact that our products are endorsed by some of the world’s leading industry technicians! I am passionate about quality and reliability and this unerring focus underpins our brand and is shared by my team. And I cannot be prouder when I see people and organisations that I look up to sharing their love of JLM products. 7. Lubricants is a competitive sector. How will JLM maintain its competitive edge in the next 5 years? We will maintain our competitive edge by sticking to our brand values. And we will continue to learn and improve. We are always close to market trends and innovations, and this enables us to react without delay. Complacency is not a word in our vocabulary! 8. You market JLM as being a trade trusted brand. How important is the mechanic to JLM Lubricants? That is an easy one to answer. The professional motor mechanic is the jewel in our crown.
Secondly, the Petrol Particulate Filter (PPF or GPF) Cleaner fuel additive. This is a relatively new phenomena for the aftermarket.

Unlocking Profit Down the Pipe A report from the DPF Doctor Network founder Darren Darling.
With the pandemic ‘delivering’ even more faulty and neglected vehicles to workshop doors, mechanics are in big demand. And when it comes to DPFs and the many problems they present from partially blocked to full on limp mode it’s important that mechanics ensure their DPF diagnostic and fault fixing capability is top of the class. If they don’t, they’re effectively handing work to neighbouring workshops that know how to handle a blocked or, faulty DPF.
that we give our customers sound advice on how to avoid the problem reoccurring and that we recommend the right products.
“As we have worked through this pandemic, we have seen more DPF problems than ever,” says Darren. “With travel restrictions in place this has led to a huge upturn in blocked DPFs. Stop start short journeys are largely to blame as well as the general delays in servicing. The members of our DPF Doctor Network globally from Southern Ireland to Australia, The UK and the Netherlands have been working 12-hour days and more to deliver a premium DPF service to customers keen to get their faulty DPF beleaguered vehicles back on the road.
“Traditionally we’ve only seen vehicles that other workshops have struggled to fix but we’re now seeing a high volume of blocked DPFs because of the short journeys motorists have been restricted to under the lockdown measures in most countries. This
“We have seen fantastic results using JLM Lubricants’ DPF Regen Plus and JLM Emission Reduction Treatment Diesel to keep DPFs clean while only doing short journeys,” says Darren. “In fact, my own vehicles have not had a long journey in over 5 months but the DPFs are nice and clean thanks to JLM. There has never been a better time to promote JLM additives as a preventative measure and of course the DPF cleaning range as a real problem solver. These are products that are effective, safe and that do exactly what they say on the tin. I can’t recommend the JLM Professional DPF Toolkit enough. It enables a mechanic to clean a fully blocked DPF in around one hour with the need to remove it – whether

low voltage or power supply. Not of concern at this point although always worth logging and telling the customer.
102,000 miles
The 2- fault codes to concentrate on were: P2463 - the DPF soot content was not OK. It had a component fault. And P2279 - a leakage was identified in the inlet air system. The signal comparison was faulty. Looking through the live data next and logging it while driving the car we could see that the commanded boost was much higher than the actual boost. A big red flag. During the assessment we were gathering the data from the ECU but also undertaking manual checks including the engine, looking for obvious faults.
This car was brought to our workshop with the customer reporting that the engine management light was on, and the car had no power. Despite being carbon cleaned at another garage before coming to us, the problem remained. We started by talking to our customer to understand how they use and maintain their car, when these faults had occurred and how long the light had been on. This is something that Darren (Darren Darling, founder of the DPF Doctor Network) instilled in us at the initial training and every event since! You don’t know what gems of information the customer will yield. So, I let them talk and listen intently. The customer asked why I was taking him through this process given the previous technician performing the carbon clean had said the DPF was blocked. I explained that we work to our own findings rather than basing our actions on those of another technician. And you should not clean the DPF without knowing if the system components are operating correctly.

The fault causing the low boost and contributing to poor combustion resulting in too much soot? A split intercooler hose - which had been checked prior to coming to us. It demonstrates the importance of carrying out a pre-clean assessment because this would have caused the DPF to block again within a few hundred miles! We also found a faulty pressure sensor on the assessment. So, 2 faults that had not been diagnosed. We could now send the report and repair costs to the customer. Repairs authorised the work was completed. We carried out the DPF Doctor 3 stage clean using the JLM Lubricants’ professional toolkit and JLM DPF products so the DPF did not have to be removed from the vehicle, saving time (on modern vehicles this can be a lot!) and money.
2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee 12,000 miles
The customer was concerned the DPF warning message was on. The car was used rarely and had been idling on the drive for some time. During the assessment we carried out a safety check which revealed that the tyres had been run flat at one point and were split down to the cords. The vehicle had not been serviced for a couple of years. Before going any further, we had to ensure it was safe to drive so we advised the customer that a service was required. They were happy to proceed on this basis. Service completed we moved onto the DPF assessment. During the assessment we were presented with the fault codes P2463 - DPF soot accumulation too high, P0428 - Cat temperature sensor circuit too high and P0546 - exhaust temperature sensor circuit too high. Looking through the live data we could see the exhaust temperature sensor reading was 999’C! Time to check out the sensor and wiring.
So, onto the assessment confirming the fault. We started up. The
As professionals we must keep up with industry developments and continue to learn. This fault was simple, but it had been missed or perhaps the technician hadn’t checked it and simply proceeded with cleaning the inlet system. Even though the fault description
At this point we were not looking up diagrams or checking wiring back to ECUs etc. We were keeping it simple. With the engine cooled down and the temperature sensor disconnected we could see a change in state in the live data. The data changed from 999’C to 100’C, indicating the wiring from the ECU to the sensor was good. We then checked the residence in the sensor. 200 Ohms plugging it back in, the temperature returned to 999’C.
Engine Management light remained on with a short road test confirming the car was flat - no power or boost. Scanning the car, we could see various fault codes, most relating to
mentioned an air leak it’s not acceptable to short cut the diagnostic process. Customers must trust in our ability to perform an accurate first-time fix.
We also confirmed this faulty sensor by manipulating the resistance to the ECU whilst watching the data change. The higher the resistance the higher the temperature.
The car now had a DPF within specification.
See photos: faulty sensor 200 Ohms New sensor 0.2 Ohms
The new sensor fitted, we carried out an extended road test so we could watch regeneration take place within the DPF. Along with the JLM Lubricants Engine flush that we used during the service we now added a can of the JLM DPF Cleaner to the fuel tank to help keep the DPF in a healthy state. Although a faulty sensor caused the DPF fault with this vehicle, we do see many vehicles where the blocked DPF is attributable to a lack of servicing. It’s our job as professionals and as DPF specialists to explain the reasons for any DPF blockage to our customer. This instils confidence that the proposed course of action will get their car back on the road - with a first-time fix.

DPF Doctor network founder Darren Darling has launched live interactive online DPF training for mechanics all over the world. Every month 30 mechanics can benefit from his live and interactive online training, delivered from the purpose built JLM Academy in the United Kingdom. If you want to be in the top 5% of mechanics in your country for fixing DPFs, with garages referring DPF business to you, attending Darren’s training is a must. There has never been a better time for you to upskill and be a leading technician with your own workshop a centre of DPF excellence. Motorists want to keep their cars in good repair and on the road for longer. But when it comes to DPFs many mechanics are unable to accurately diagnose the fault or to perform a first-time fix. By attending Darren’s training, you will build a reputation as a DPF expert - without having to jump on a plane. And you can access all the training plus the Facebook forum for 12 months - all for one modest investment which will pay for itself many times over. In this one-to-one interview, Gilbert Groot puts Darren Darling under the spotlight to find out how his training benefits mechanics worldwide. Q. Does a mechanic need DPF experience to benefit
Q. Why online training?
To be honest, I was apprehensive about launching online training, but we wanted to explore it because of the global Covid restrictions. So, we developed a training portal for hosting interactive live training sessions, recording them to watch later. We’ve packed the portal with many ‘how to’ video guides to help our technicians. It’s a brilliant resource that can be tapped into 24/7. This gives a technician in Australia, the Netherlands and Slovakia for example, the same resources as one in the UK and the same support through our Facebook group. Q. How has the interactive online training been received?
We’ve now completed seven sets of 6 live online training sessions and the feedback has been fantastic. Our previous face-to-face 2-day course was intense; lots to absorb. Now that we’re online running a series of 2-hour sessions it’s a game changer! Technicians remain focussed for the entire session and absorb much more by doing the course in bite size. They join in too– it’s very interactive. And they can revisit any session afterwards to ensure they haven’t missed anything. Our live sessions run monthly, each course split into 6 two-hour sessions over 2 weeks. A technician can attend every single live session if they want at no extra charge. This makes it incredible value for money.

the training. Why?
Q. How will a mechanic benefit from your training?
We teach them a world class process that enables them to work more efficiently, to solve DPF problems quickly and to improve their firsttime fix rate. All this adds to their bottom line and reputation. Simply put they make more money! Our training is based on real world experience and will have an immediate impact on how they work. We take them on a journey from the simple problems to understanding even the most complex issues caused by software.

DIESEL DIRT Like GDIs, direct injection diesel engines can suffer badly from intake contamination, although Rob Marshall discovers not quite in the same way.
Despite direct injection petrol technology becoming popular during this century, diesel cars have had their fuel injectors facing the firing line for far longer. This includes earlier engines (the venerable PSA XUD unit being a typical example) that possessed swirl chambers within the cylinder-head casting, an advantage of which was reduced diesel ‘clatter’. Therefore, even early popular iterations of automotive diesel engines had their inlet valves introducing air only into the cylinder, unlike contemporary port injection petrol engines of the time that mixed both air and the fuel together within the intake. Interestingly, those older diesel engines tended not to suffer from intake deposit build. So, where have the deposits come from? When swirl chambers were rendered obsolete, and fuel injection technology had matured sufficiently, the diesel injector was relocated directly above the piston.
38
consequences include less efficient combustion, higher emissions and premature particulate filter loadings. In many cases, it can be quicker to remove the inlet manifold and clean the assembly manually, ensuring that it is completely dry and free of solvents before it is refitted to the engine. Sensors can also be cleaned in a similar way. Should this exercise be impractical, especially in instances where severe contamination has not taken a grip, you might wish to consider employing JLM’s Extreme Clean Toolkit. Gilbert Groot highlights that:
The consequences include less efficient combustion, higher emissions and premature particulate filter loadings.
Being dirty to be clean Unlike GDIs, the consequence of adopting direct injection cannot be the problem. The real culprit is exhaust gas recirculation, which reduces NOx emissions, a group of harmful gases that tend to more prolific with diesel combustion. Incidentally, JLM Lubricants does not endorse disabling EGR valves not only due to the resultant rise in NOx emissions but also the extra thermal stress placed on the engine and, specifically, the turbocharger. Like GDI engines, diesel crankcase ventilation systems ensure that a fine film of oil coats the air intake passages. As EGR introduces sooty exhaust gases into these tracts, the particulates stick to the surfaces and accumulate over time. Unlike GDI, however, not only is the exhaust gas composition different but also the temperatures
“While the toolkit can clean the intake and sensors without dismantling, it is also useful to use even if the intake has been washed manually, because the chemicals clean parts that you might not be able to access, including cylinder-head intakes, valve heads and stems. It also survives the combustion process to benefit turbocharger variable vanes and, of course, the EGR valve.” Therefore while diesel intakes suffer from deposit build, consider that they are different than those experienced typically with direct
are lower. While the resultant deposit is not as stubborn to remove, the oily gunge is extremely messy and coats everything, even including air temperature and turbo boost pressure sensors. The

Special Focus Why 3 new workshop products were launched during the pandemic as part of JLM Lubricants’ mission to drive the ‘Repair Don’t Replace’ message globally
When several distributors are reporting interest from their trade customers for three products, it’s time to act. This ‘interest’ saw JLM Lubricants launch three new products in short succession as part of their Repair Don’t Replace global campaign. They were:A multi spray, an engine oil stop leak, and a spark plug/ injector loosener. Initial pre-launch orders ensured they went to the top of the bestsellers within days. “The pandemic and especially the lockdown periods hit the automotive sector hard,” said Gilbert Groot. “We saw new car sales fall, motorists delaying servicing and existing cars being kept on the road for longer with short distance stop- start driving the norm. The timing of these three products was therefore spot on. If workshop repair bills can be kept down because parts have been avoided, it keeps the mechanic and the cash strapped motorist happy with a spin off benefit to the environment too. With the Engine Oil Stop Leak, we have a product which serves the aging car park. Not only does it stop and seal motor oil leaks in one application, but it also reduces emission blue exhaust smoke, and it can be mixed with all engine oils. Because it can be used for petrol, diesel, hybrid, LPG and NPV cars it’s a product fit for any workshop. What we are seeing on a global scale, supported by feedback from our distributors is that motorists are looking to their mechanic for reliable and low-cost repairs. This product ticks the box for older vehicles more susceptible to oil leaks with the focus on repairing as opposed to replacing.”
protects, dissolves and prevents rust’, JLM Lubricants were entering a mature market with dominant brands. “The feedback from our distributors was that mechanics were looking for a JLM branded equivalent of the market leader,” says Gilbert. “Our Multi Spray is on a par with the market leader in terms of formulation and ease of delivery with its smart straw and aerosol design. It was never a matter of ‘do we enter this market?’ but when. We had a wait list from several countries which is testament to the growing perception of our brand as a champion of the trade, not to mention the formulation of this everyday use product.” With the Injector Loosener JLM Lubricants have provided a lifeline to injectors that would otherwise have to be drilled out. As any mechanic will tell you, it’s not always the case that a stuck injector can be drilled out. With the Injector Loosener even the most obstinate stuck injector or spark plug can be loosened but should it be impossible to extract the mechanic knows they’ve done everything possible before resorting to drilling. JLM launched this product based on the global reaction to the JLM GDI Cleaner. Mechanics were asking for this product as a natural partner. “The two go hand in hand as part of the modern mechanic’s toolkit. And the motorist is spared the cost of footing the bill for a new injector,” says Gilbert. As a brand JLM Lubricants is committed to the professional mechanic in the 40 countries where JLM products are used. When developing new products, the focus remains firmly on helping the mechanic to repair whenever possible over replacing.
With the Multi Spray, which amongst its benefits ‘cleans, lubricates,

Marketing on a Shoestring.
Going for Growth!
Whether you’re a stockist wanting to increase your JLM sales or a mechanic considering how to add JLM products into your service offering these tips are for you. Because marketing is not about spending money on random activities in the hope that you will find a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. It’s about knowing who you want to target – prospects, customers and lapsed customers and then developing simple communication campaigns that make your brand stand out for all the right reasons leading to a sale. You don’t want to target the whole world, do you? Just those that will benefit from the products you promote and your fantastic customer service. UK Legends driver Mike Schlup, JLM Lubricants UK
So where does marketing on a shoestring start? Start with a pen and pad (or your favoured device). Make two lists: “cold prospects” and “existing customers” and then create smaller subgroups if relevant (i.e., VIP customers, lapsed customers. Decide how important each group is because this will influence where you initially focus your energies. You must know who you’re targeting and why if your time is to be wisely spent. Don’t have all your targets in one big group if you need smaller groups to apply your dedicated messages to. Then consider...
1
What will influence cold prospects to use you? Now more than ever, people want value for money with the reassurance that you always provide quality. Make a list of all the needs you meet starting with the most important. Include sector specific messages that build your case as a desirable business - for each sector you are targeting. Can you reduce this down to the four most important needs and beside each need how you meet it? This content is valuable when you start marketing to cold prospects. You are talking their language by demonstrating that you understand their needs and are explaining clearly how you meet them. This makes you stand out from competitors trying to target everyone with the same boring message.

Build the loyalty of new, existing, and lapsed customers. What are the ‘welcome back’ messages that will bring lapsed customers back; those that will make existing customer buy more and those that will make new customers spend more? I see many businesses default to a price reduction when it’s just not needed. It’s always good to remind customers of what you can offer them including new products, or services they may be aware of and why you are or, remain their best choice. It makes good business sense to reconnect with customers that stopped using you during the pandemic because reminding them of what you can do for them now could be all that’s needed to bring them back.
3
Consider some special yet simple options for communicating with these groups. I’m a big fan of personal letters because they have a WOW factor. Sending a letter, hand signed by you and enclosed in a good quality matching envelope will ensure your message is read and you’re well thought of. Add in a nice product flyer, your latest newsletter. What should you say in the letter? Revisit the messages you have created above and add a charming introduction. You are writing to say hello and catch up with your customer or are introducing yourself to a prospect because you know that what you offer is likely to interest them. Email is more efficient for sure
so don’t dismiss it but when you’re aiming for real impact, it can’t compete with a personal letter that has a great message and a call to action. I can share many case studies of clients who ventured into paper, pen, and stamp (with some resistance I confess!) and as a result signed up new customers and had healthy sales from lapsed customers they had given up on. Sending a nice letter and then picking up the phone a few days after it has landed is a proven marketing on a shoestring strategy.
4
Stop spending money on ‘stuff’ that’s not working. Have you had business from that magazine or website you were talked into using? Do you need to be more targeted and ensure that the channels you choose reach the audiences you’re trying to target and, that you’re given enough space to share your benefit messages?
5
Review your marketing activities monthly. What’s working, what’s not? What needs tightening up? A regular marketing stock-take will help you to focus on planning marketing campaigns with a realistic chance of succeeding. And you can swiftly put an end to activities that drain your budget and nothing else.
6
Acknowledge that you have a part to play in the marketing process. Don’t expect your apprentice or family member to have all the answers. Marketing on a shoestring is a team effort.

JLM Oil Stop Leak
250 ml / J06050
250 ml / J06055
JLM BorTec Oil Additive is a new generation, ash-less boron ester based friction reducer and anti-oxidant, which adds unique features to any standard motor oil. Performs extremely well in synergy with traditional friction modifiers in common engine oils and in particular in midand low SAPS oils. The highly polar ester borate forms a protective friction reducing layer of boron nitride under pressure and heat protecting all engine parts most susceptible to wear. The BorTec leaves a coating which remains on the surface of internal engine parts, even when the engine is off, providing immediate anti-wear protection at start-up.
JLM Oil Stop Leak stops and prevents oil leakages by reviving deteriorated seals. Reviving the seals will also leed reduction of engine noise and less oil consumption. Can be used for all gasoline, diesel, hybrid and autogas cars.
JLM Turbo Pre Lube 20 ml / J06010
JLM Turbo Pre Lube provides protection for turbo chargers. When fitting a new turbo, rebuilt or second hand, it always takes up to 30 seconds for the initial supply of oil to reach the bearings. This running-in time (without lubrication) may cause premature wear or seizure. Adding JLM Turbo Pre Lube before fitting a new turbo and the special fully synthetic MoS2 formula will provide superior lubrication and prevent damage to it. JLM Turbo Pre Lube is suitable for all types of motor oil.

Show Me the Money! Most garages want to find new revenue streams that will enhance the service they offer customers and increase the profit per vehicle. But with customers more cash conscious than ever, the drive is on for mechanics to offer solutions that do not require a part replacement if instead the part can be cleaned (or repaired) and restored back to function. The fact is that some parts do need a complete replacement, but that’s not always the case.
The global fuel additives market is growing – testament to the trend of Repair Don’t Replace. According to Fortune Business insights it is set to reach €12,117.8 million by 2028.
dismantling and disassembly. The clean turbocharger works better, prevents excessive fuel consumption, and has the reward of a longer service life. The environment benefits too of course.
But, for the mechanic looking to keep bills trim whilst making a decent profit, which products – additives and cleaners - offer a genuine business opportunity that work for their garage and their customers? Which brands can they stake their reputation on? And if Repair Don’t Replace is to become a more widespread and universally acknowledged way of operating in a sustainable manner, how can JLM Lubricants help?
Replacing a DPF Filter can easily run into four figures. And for many motorists, the stop-start short journey driving patterns (another unwelcome symptom of the global pandemic), has led to a global DPF crisis with many reports of garages recommending that the DPF needs replacing when in fact it doesn’t. A professional clean instead could restore the DPF to tip top condition. The one shot in tank JLM DPF Cleaner for example will clean a dirty DPF for less than €30. It contains a high concentration of Cerium and Platinum. This allows regeneration to take place at a much lower temperature and in a much shorter time. The advantage of cleaner at a lower temperature is that it’s effective in city vehicles without the risk of damaging the DPF at an excessively high temperature. The platinum coats cylinders, promotes soot reduction, extends the life of the DPF, and promotes DPF regeneration. Cerium does not produce ash, so the post application test drive is short and sweet. The JLM Professional DPF Cleaning toolkit and flush fluid enables a mechanic to clean a severely blocked DPF in a few hours without having to remove it from the vehicle. The customer doesn’t require resuscitating when presented with the final bill! It’s worth stating that Darren Darling, founder of The DPF Doctor Network and his growing army of DPF Doctors, only ever use the JLM Lubricants’ DPF product range and the professional DPF Cleaning Toolkit.
JLM Lubricants additives and cleaners are helping garages build valuable additional revenue streams whilst keeping customers’ bills within sensible limits. It’s a win- win for everyone because savvy customers will shop around if they are uncomfortable with the price quoted. JLM is a Trade Trusted brand. Every product that comes out of the JLM stable has been developed for the trade and tested by top tier mechanics on real vehicles, in their workshops before being launched globally in 40 countries. JLM fuel additives help vehicles perform better, reduce carbon emissions, and increase fuel efficiency. JLM oil additives help reduce friction and wear within the vehicles whilst also keeping engines clean by flushing through unwelcome deposits such as sludge.
before an emissions test (e.g., before the MOT test).
Take the JLM Turbo Cleaner. Simply added to a full tank of fuel, it eliminates and burns soot particles, while soot residues are fed into the combustion process - without the need to disassemble the turbocharger. As any mechanic tasked with cleaning a Turbo will attest, soot deposits cause the jamming of the wings in variable turbochargers with successive performance losses. If no timely corrective measures are taken, a large and expensive repair bill follows. But for less than €30 this product will improve the function and performance of the turbocharger, which can avoid

For the mechanic, the decision to repair or clean versus replacement comes down to experience, integrity and having the right products to hand – ones they can trust to deliver time after time. JLM Lubricants offer garages a genuine business opportunity. One that works for their garage, their customers, and the environment.

A special report from Darren Darling with Stephen Kasapis, DPF Doctor and brand ambassador, Australia.
“Something of real concern is the number of cars coming to us with damaged DPFs due to poor attempts at repairing the car,” says Darren. “Across our network we’re now seeing hundreds of damagedbeyond-repair DPFs every month. This is frustrating as the motorist has already spent their hard-earned cash with another garage having the DPF cleaned or regenerated. They now face the devastating news they must replace the expensive DPF. In principle, cleaning a DPF is simple. However, they’re easily damaged by high temperatures and a misuse of additives. This tends to happen when garages reset adaptations to get warning lights out when it’s not safe to do so or when they carry out forced regenerations. The problem has increased since more garages have decided to keep DPF repairs and cleaning in-house. But they don’t really understand what they’re doing. Most DPF cleaning equipment is advertised as an easy way to make a fast buck. But at who’s expense? The motorist.” “In the last month alone DPF Doctors have had 300 broken DPFs referred to them; broken beyond repair because of the lack of skills and DPF knowhow on the part of the techs attempting to fix them. This amounts to a total of £300,000. Only today a lady brought her car to my workshop with a DPF that needs replacing (just 33,000 miles on the clock). She’d been quoted £4,000 for a new DPF by the main dealer.”

4w4, only 56000km. He’d carried out a few regenerations of the DPF with his scan tool, but the car was still in limp mode, and he was stuck. He had called several mechanics. I used TeamViewer and got into his scan tool. It didn’t take long to work out that the DPF was damaged. I told him it was damaged because he’d put it through too many regenerations. I had a quick look at some scan data. The reason the DPF system had stopped any regeneration on the road was because the oil dilution was not reset. Had this car been seen by a member of the DPF Doctor Network they would have known not to do so many regenerations and would have checked the oil dilution. This car needs a new DPF which in Australia amounts to $5000. I didn’t charge the guy but advised him to join the DPF Doctor Network and get some real DPF training. I wish more workshops would put in the time and effort to invest in this specialist training. I made the commitment in 2019 to come to the UK and be trained with the best DPF training from the Master himself, Darren Darling. I’ve had no comebacks from the DPFs I’ve fixed, and always get positive feedback.”
“DPFs are being damaged at an alarming rate when it’s preventable. Part of the problem is that additives designed to clean the DPF are being misused and because of this, causing irreparable damage,” says Darren.
“By far the biggest problem causing irreversible damage to DPFs is the lack of up to date, thorough DPF training on the part of the technician being asked to clean/fix the DPF,” says Darren. “They don’t know what they don’t know and so are attempting a DPF fix, not realising they have neither the skillset nor the diagnostic expertise. Technicians responsible for these damaged DPFs are unlikely to know the consequences of their flawed ‘fixes’ because as our member feedback confirms, motorists approach them to find out why, despite their DPF being ‘fixed’ by another garage, it’s still faulty.” “This problem is also the enemy of sustainability – damaged DPFs are consigned to landfill. Multiple hours are spent attempting a fix. New

DPFs:
My engine is struggling! Please clear the dirt from my air intake and EGR-valve.
When temperature turns ugly Most technicians realise that high temperatures are beneficial to clear soot blockages from diesel particulate filters but the DPF Doctor reveals that a supposed friend can also be your enemy.
Based in Newcastle, Northern England, the JLM Academy is the home of the global DPF Doctor network. Led by the DPF Doctor himself, Darren Darling keeps at the forefront of the latest DPF developments and repair techniques. Yet, the network also sees other garages’ DPF cleaning attempts, which prove that a lack of knowledge is making a bad situation even worse. Darren reveals to JLM Drive readers that,
“Most garages appreciate that DPFs require relatively high temperatures to regenerate. What they may not know is that higher temperatures are not always better and the car has measures to protect itself.” The DPF Doctor Network finds that some aftermarket garages are disabling these safety parameters without curing the underlying fault, to trick the DPF into enduring either an active, or a forced regeneration. While the theory is correct that regeneration raises internal DPF temperatures to burn off particulates, a soot restriction can create too much heat, or even thermal runaway. A damaged monolith is the consequence. Mr Darling testifies:
“During August alone, the Diesel Doctor network witnessed over 200 DPF blockages, caused not from soot but by their own disintegrated internals. Excessive temperatures are nearly always the cause, due to garages performing multiple regenerations, or resetting adaptations, when it is unsafe to do so.”

Damaged beyond repair DPF JLM Lubricant’s founder, Gilbert Groot, reports that:
“Our philosophy of gentle but effective cleaning is emphasised through both JLM’s DPF Doctor Network and our products. For instance, the JLM Regen Plus additive has been reformulated to take advantage of the latest developments in cleansing technology and is based on a cerium catalyst, rather than iron. This subtle difference not only helps to avoid DPF temperature spikes but also produces less ash byproduct.”
The chemical advantage Yet, technicians are not entirely to blame; garages not picking the correct fuel additive can also be responsible. Aside from overdosing, an everyday regeneration assistance additive should not be used on a vehicle with a blocked DPF, because it can cause an excessive
The cure to destroying perfectly serviceable DPFs needlessly is simply training. The JLM Academy was founded just over two years ago to help independent garages understand why simply resetting codes and carrying out forced regenerations can damage DPFs beyond repair. Its latest course material explains why hotter is not always better and helps technicians to identify DPFs that have been destroyed internally by excessive temperatures already. As Darren concludes:
temperature spike. A gentler alternative is required. This explains why JLM Lubricants has formulated different additives to clear blocked DPFs that do not raise their internal temperatures excessively.
“Heat can be your friend but never forget that it can also be your foe”.
JLM EGR & Air Intake Cleaner
JLM Diesel/Petrol Air Intake & EGR Cleaner is a powerful and effective cleaner that cleans the valve on the exhaust gas recirculation system, the complete intake system and the intake valves in the cylinder head. Diesel Air Intake & EGR Cleaner restores the air supply to the engine. This improves engine power and acceleration and reduces the amount of smoke from the exhaust. Use Diesel Air Intake & EGR Cleaner if the engine idles irregularly or cuts out spontaneously.

Let’s get Social! Some valuable top tips By Sabrina Pace, the retained social media marketer for JLM Lubricants
LinkedIn LinkedIn has become a social media hero in the business to business (B2B) sector in recent years. The days when LinkedIn was just a useful extension of your CV and a great platform to go job hunting are over. LinkedIn is now the platform for businesses to be on. It should be an integral part of your marketing mix. As a company, you can create your own company page and share interesting news or specialist topics from your sector. You can start debates, post great videos and lead from the front as an expert in your field. Individual users can follow the pages directly without having to send a request in advance (as is the case with normal user profiles) giving them access to your latest news and posts directly. Get into the habit of sharing content regularly and it will build your visibility as an employer and your reputation as a company. Being active on LinkedIn brings many benefits to your business: • Increased brand awareness • Opportunities to network with existing customers • Strengthening employee loyalty • Reaching people interested in working with you or for you • Driving people to your website • Reaching new customers To build your business network on LinkedIn make sure you post regularly and that you interact with the people taking time to respond to your posts. Look at different groups too. These groups can be found via the search function and require some research. Groups where topics that fit your company are discussed and debated are likely to be the most suitable. Both you and your employees should be on LinkedIn joining in with contributions and responding. Time to TikTok or is being an Insta success better?
Facebook …Is brilliant for building a relationship with your customers and strengthening the bond. Unfortunately, too many companies only allow for one way communication. It’s not enough to simply create a company page and pop on there now and again. Two-way communication is what makes Facebook so effective. For companies that sell their products to other companies, their marketing on Facebook is typically information overload with questions answered in explanatory videos and other information. No room left for emotions, humour, and interaction! Use the channel to convey the personality of your company and your team and start talking and listening. Facebook presents you with a fantastic opportunity to show just how multi-faceted and responsive you are especially when customers and people interested in talking to you leave comments. So be social on Facebook! And make sure you connect with JLM Lubricants. We always say hello and we like sharing your relevant content.
Video content is popular and now mainstream. So, it’s no surprise that TikTok is considered one of the fastest-growing video social media app within the last two years. With its increasing popularity companies are keen to find out what it takes to be successful. Like YouTube, TikTok is a video platform. But videos on TikTok are much shorter than on YouTube. Users have 15 seconds to three minutes for their clips. This is precisely the attraction: videos are informative and entertaining, but not tediously long. The target group on TikTok tends to be young (early teens to under 25) but don’t let that put you off in the B2B sector, because not all the 100 million users in Europe are that young. If we take Germany for example, 31% of the 5.5 million users are 25 years +. Entrepreneurs can reach enough people with purchasing power.
with potential customers and keeping in touch with existing ones. TikTok should therefore be seen as a supplement. You can even recycle the content of both platforms because what works on Instagram Reel can also be uploaded to TikTok without hesitation – no need to create brand-new videos! Here are a few suggestions for using TikTok for business • Introduce yourself • Introduce your team • Give a guided tour behind the scenes • Share a typical day in your life • Show what your products do for customers • Demonstrate how a product works • Explain what customers like about you • Share some of the typical misconceptions about your business • Show something funny that happened at work • Do a quiz • Explain a problem simply and provide the solution • 5 tips for ... • Explain why you love your customers
So, should you rely on TikTok rather than Instagram? The answer is a resounding no. Instagram remains a popular platform for connecting
