Flag Star Block 12” Unfinished
You will cut: 4- 3 1/2” Squares-Background Color 8- 3 7/8” Squares-Star Points 4- 6 1/2” x 3 7/8” Rectangle-Background Color 1- 3 1/2” Square – Flag corner-Blue Fabric 1- 2” x 3 1/2" Red Strip 1- 2” x 3 1/2” White Strip 1- 2” x 6 1/2" Red Strip 1- 2” x 6 1/2" White Strip
Step 1: Sew 2” x 3 ½” Red Strip and 2” x 3 ½” White Strip right sides together using ¼” seam allowance. Press Step 2: Sew 2” x 6 ½” Red Strip and 2” x 6 ½” White Strip right sides together using ¼” seam allowance. Press.
Step 3: Sew Step 1 pieces to the Blue 3 ½” Square. It will look like this when done.
Step 4: Sew Step 2 to completed Step 3. Will look like this when completed/
Step 5: Create Flying Geese: Mark the 8 – 3 7/8” squares (on the wrong side of fabric) on the diagonal from corner to corner as shown below.
Place one marked square right sides together (mark should be facing up) on the corner of a 6 1/2" x 3 7/8” rectangle as shown below.
Sew along marked line. Repeat with the remaining 3 rectangles. All four should look like the above picture. Now Trim the excess off leaving a ¼” seam allowance. Press the triangle back to reform the rectangle. It will look like this when complete.
Repeat the process for the other side so when you are done, your rectangle will look like this.
Step 6: Assemble Rows:
Sew 1 background 3 ½” square, a flying geese block, and 3 ½” square together to form the top row.
Next sew a flying geese, your flag block, and another flying geese together to form row 2
Sew 1 3 ½”, flying geese, and 3 ½” square together to form row 3.
Step 7: Assemble Block:
Finally sew your rows together, nesting seams to complete your block. It will look like the one below when complete.
