Umbrella Block
Materials Needed: 4 – 1 ½” x 20” (or 2 – 1 ½” x 45”) print material 3 – 1 ½” x 20” (or 4 – 1 ½” x 45”) white (background) material 1 – 3” square background fabric 1 – 1 ½” square background fabric Rick Rack or Bias Strip for handle
This is a simple block built as a log cabin block. You will start your block with the 1 ½” background square. Attach the square to a print strip, right sides together using a ¼” seam allowance. Trim even. Finger press back, turn ¼ turn to the right and attach to another strip of print fabric, using a ¼” seam allowance. Finger press seam back. Turn ¼ turn to the right, add strip of white (background fabric) using ¼” seam allowance. Finger press seam back. Turn ¼ turn to the right, add strip of white (background fabric) using ¼” seam allowance. Press all seams (with an iron) .
Repeat these steps until you have 10 print strips which create the umbrella and 11 white (background strips).

Once you reach this point you will snow ball the upper left corner of your block following the directions below.
Take your 3” block and draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of fabric.
Attach square to the log cabin block as shown below sewing along the diagonal line.
Trim the excess off leaving a ¼” seam allowance. Set seam and press open. Your block will look like the one below.
Next add two white strips to the top and left side of block as shown below to complete the block.
Once you reach this point all you need to do is add the handle using rick rack or bias strip.
