Ornament Block
This makes a 12” finished Block You will need: Fabric
1-color for ornament body 1 color for ornament band (optional) Scrap yellow, gold, or gray for ornament top Background color
Rotary Cutter
Cut Your Fabric as follows: Ornament Body: 2 ~ 4” x 8 ½” strip (or 8 ½” x 8 ½” square) Ornament Band: (optional 1 ~ 1 ½” x 8 ½” strip Ornament Top: 1 ~ 2” x 2 ½” strip Background Fabric:
2 ~ 2 x 8 ½” strip 2 ~ 2 x 12” strip 2 ~ 2” x 4” strip 4 ~ 2 ½” squares
Step 1: Sewing your Ornament together: Place one ornament body and the ornament band right sides together and sew with a ¼” seam. Place second ornament body on the remaining edge of the band (right sides together) and sew with a ¼” seam allowance. Press seams.
Step 2: Snowball your Ornament: On the wrong sides of your 2 ½” squares mark from one corner to opposite corner on the diagonal as shown below.
Line square up with one corner of your ornament piece and sew on the marked diagonal line. Repeat with the remaining three squares. Trim leaving a ¼” seam allowance. Press snowball back to make complete the square. Your block should look similar to the one below.
Third step: Making the top: Sew 1 ~ 2” x 4” strip and the colored ornament top piece right sides together with a ¼” seam allowance. Repeat with the remaining 2” x 4” strip. Press seams. (This is a little larger than the block so you have room to center the ornament top to the middle of the ornament.) Place on your ornament piece right sides together, pin only in the middle to make sure you top piece stays in the middle, sew with a ¼” seam allowance. Press seams. Your block should look like this at this point
Fourth Step: Attach 1 ~ 2 x 8 ½” strip to the top and bottom of your block with a ¼” seam so your block will look like the one below. Press the seams.
Final Step: Place 1 ~ 2 x 12” strip on the right side of the block, right sides together, sew using a ¼” seam allowance. Repeat with the left side. Press seams. Your block should look like the one below with complete.
