A special thanks to Luie’s cousin, Stewie, who took a chance to be mentioned in Chapter 22, Flagstaff, Arizona – the Paws Rest Here article. No part of this magazine may be reproduced in any form without the permission in writing from the author. This magazine is intended to provide general information on dog-friendly vacation locations. The author has made every effort for the information to be up to date and accurate however the information provided is not guaranteed.

Author’s Note Let me introduce myself: my name is Luie Boone Jahner. I am a Purebred Yellow Labrador Retriever, although I am pretty much all white and think I am really a Snow Lab. I was whelped on May 7, 2012, to Maximus Prime and Bella Ballou in Louisville, Kentucky. Guess that kind of explains my first name. Spelling is from Rachel, the youngest human of my family. Middle name was given by my male adult human dad, Randy, as one of his folk heroes is Daniel Boone. I must admit that I love my name! When, I started this magazine adventure, I asked for assistance from my adult female human mom, Rhonda and we decided to be co-writers. We both love to travel and after our first dog-friendly escapade we knew there was so much more out there to see. So, we did our research and after many long hours on both the computer and telephone, we did it! We are proud to present our 1st volume of Wagger’s Welcome. Please note that each vacation destination is broken into four sections. First being an explanation of the location. Second is the description of the vacation rental our family will plan on staying at. Each family member will have their own sleeping quarters. Other amenities are, also, defined. I have added a personal saying to each description. Please enjoy my expressions of each place. The third page is devoted to each specific location with 3 dog-friendly activities, 1 dogfriendly eating place and 1 unique thing about the vacation spot. I end the section with a map from our home city of Hortonville, Wisconsin, to the destination. This includes miles driving, hours on the road (courtesy of Bing Maps: “Bing Maps - Driving Directions, Traffic and Road Conditions.” Bing Maps - Driving Directions, Traffic and Road Conditions. N.p., n.d.Web. 30 May 2015. https://www.bing.com/maps/. Also, dog-friendly lodgings (if needed on the way) and my own pet peeve about the location are included.

I had fun discovering new dog-friendly places and do hope to visit each of them. But, in the meantime, please enjoy my magazine!

Your friend, Luie Boone

I will, also, chase around Rachel on the tire swing. As I run around, I will be careful of the firepit as there may be left over food there. I can’t wait to go down to the Lake, to go swimming and play water Frisbee. I am going to sleep on the main floor, in the Family Room under the Pool Table, so I can wake up Rachel or my parents to let me outside to go to the bathroom. This will be just an amazing time!”

Chapter 2: DIAMOND IN THE RUFF

FOUND IN LAKE TAHOE, CALIFORNIA Lake Tahoe with its beautiful blue waters surrounded by mountains is a pet and people paradise no matter what the season. Lake Tahoe is a clear, large freshwater lake in the majestic Sierra Nevada located between the border of eastern California and western Nevada. Not only are there many activities for humans, there are numerous places to enjoy activities with pooches and several are off leash. Hundreds of dog owners visit Lake Tahoe each year with their best buddy at their side.

Luie says: “We are going to Black Bear Country, but we have no need to fear as bears are naturally afraid of us and easily scared off. When we are done cooking out on the BBQ Grill that is up on the deck which overlooks the lake, we will be sure to clean the grill and have the fire burn off all food particles so a bear is not tempted. As bears are awfully strong swimmers, our Hot Tub will be off limits as it is indoors. Although, bears are very great climbers, Rachel will be super safe in her loft bedroom as we will keep all doors and windows closed and locked at night. I will keep my food dish inside in the dining room as bears are really good smellers. When we go for walks, we will make a lot of noise and if we run into a bear, we will not run away. We will slowly back off and leave the bear an escape path. Bear attacks are very rare and we would have a better chance of getting struck by lightning. We are really going to be “Smarter than the average Bear” and enjoy our visit here”

DOG DAYS OF SUMMER ARE HERE IN CAPE SAN BLAS, FLORIDA

Chapter 3:

Cape San Blas is a 7-mile long barrier peninsula, with white sand beaches and clear, sometimes blue, sometimes green water that is located in the Florida panhandle, boarded on the north by St. Joseph’s Bay and to the south by the Gulf of Mexico. Families with their four-legged children come here for the beauty and the seclusion, plus all the sun-filled activities. Whether you have spent the day relaxing at the beach, walking with Fido on the beach or a trail, splashing in the surf or combing the shore for treasure, the day should end by enjoying a beach sunset with your best furry friend.

Gage, Brooke and Rachel each have their own deck or porch outside their bedroom, meaning no concerns over whose space is whose. LUIE’S PET PEEVE ABOUT LAKE MICHIGAN, HARBOR SPRINGS Voting against allowing a dog park to be built within the city limits because of its closeness to an existing deer park. Thinking it would be stressful on the deer. (I wonder about this, as “a veterinarian states that the proposed site's proximity to the deer park would not pose any major problems, as the deer are likely accustomed to noise from vehicles and people.”)

Luie says: “I cannot wait to go on vacation here as I understand we will be staying in a home at the base of the San Francisco Peaks. “The Native People of Arizona consider (the Peaks) to be sacred” and as my cousin, Stewie, is from an Indian Reservation, it would be cool to get some pictures for him to see. My owners can take a picture while on the extra-large deck. The Peaks can, also, be clearly seen from the comfy living room. With 5 acres for us to adventure on, I am sure one of my humans will be able to take some awesome pictures of the Peaks to share with my cousin.”

LUIE’S PET PEEVE ABOUT If a dog nips someone without provocation, the dog is labeled a “vicious dog" and the Flagstaff city law requires the dog to be muzzled when off the premises of its owner or else the owner can be guilty of violating Flagstaff city dog law and the city can order the humane destruction of the dog. (To me, that appears a little too intense, but we, as dogs, do all need to behave!)

DOGGY PADDLING AWAY

AT EDISTO BEACH, SOUTH CAROLINA

EDISTO BEACH WELCOMES YOUR DOG

There is nothing better than going to the beach, splashing in the surf and digging in the sand, especially if you are a dog. Edisto Beach located on the southern tip of Edisto Island that is on the eastern coast of South Carolina, is the dog-friendly beach to do just that. Whether you choose to take part in the wide range of recreational activities or just lay back and enjoy the beautiful weather while watching your dog run and play, on “one of the only beaches that allow off-leash (dog) fun,” this is the ideal place to be. Come to Edisto Beach “to escape the (fast paced) everyday life” as no one will enjoy that more than your dog.

Luie says: “I am so excited to be going to this sandy beach paradise, but I am a little concerned as we may be going there during Loggerhead Turtle Nesting Season. However, we will follow all the given tips to protect them. When we enjoy each day in the surf and sand, right outside of

our door, if we happen upon a nesting turtle or a hatchling

attempting to reach the water, we will not touch them or interfere in their way. While we are relaxing on the deck, overlooking the Ocean, if we see any trash on the beach, we will be sure to get it out of the way for the turtles. At dusk, we will turn off all our beach lights and everyone will turn off their separate bedroom lights as the hatchlings are guided by moonlight that reflects off the Ocean to make their way to the water and any other type of light could cause them to crawl the wrong way. If they are on the beach when the sun rises, they may become food for sea birds. We are going to have fun here and, also, help protect our Sea Turtle friends!”
