Ah, southern weddings…

They’re a unique blend of elegance, charm, and a whole lot of fun. From picturesque plantations to charming barns adorned with twinkling lights, the South knows how to set the stage for a memorable celebration. It’s like stepping into a fairytale, complete with moss-draped trees, sweeping front porches, and a chorus of crickets serenading the night. If you thought your grandma’s backyard was the epitome of southern hospitality, wait till you see the jaw-dropping venues we have down here.

Now, let’s address the southern tradition of hospitality. Southern weddings are all about making guests feel like family, even if they’ve just met. From the moment they arrive, they’re greeted with warm smiles, endless hugs, and a never-ending flow of food that would put a buffet to shame. We take “eat, drink, and be merry” to a whole new level, where no one leaves hungry or thirsty. Let’s remember that it’s not just about the grandeur and traditions; it’s about love, family, and celebrating life’s most precious moments.

›Southern weddings are not only known for their timeless traditions and elegance but also for the joyous celebrations that accompany them. While Southern wedding etiquette emphasizes graciousness and charm, there’s always room for a touch of fun and lightheartedness. Give your guests a little extra hospitality with some delightful elements that will create lasting memories and add even more enchantment to your special day.

Embracing the CHARM of Southern Weddings with WARMTH and TRADITION

Southern Hospitality with a Welcome Basket: Extend a warm Southern welcome to your out-oftown guests by preparing welcome baskets filled with regional goodies. Include items like sweet tea, homemade biscuits, local treats, and a heartfelt note expressing your appreciation for their presence. This thoughtful gesture will make your guests feel cherished from the moment they arrive.

Signature Southern Cocktails: Put a creative twist on Southern hospitality by offering signature cocktails that pay homage to your region. Consider serving mint juleps, spiked sweet tea, or a refreshing concoction with a touch of fruit infused with Southern flavors. A themed cocktail bar or a mixology station will be a delightful addition to your reception, allowing guests to savor the flavors of the South.

Live Music and Dance: Southern weddings are known for their lively atmosphere, and nothing brings people together quite like music and dancing. Hire a live band or a DJ that specializes in Southern tunes, including classic country, bluegrass, or soulful R&B. Encourage guests to hit the dance floor with line dances or teach them a few traditional Southern moves to keep the party going all night long.

LOLA WEDDING ISSUE 2023 | SOUTHERN CHARM
19

Unique Southern Favors: Give your guests a charming keepsake that reflects the essence of the South. Consider personalized mason jars, mini bottles of locally produced hot sauce, homemade jams or honey, or even custom-made Southern-style biscuits. These favors will not only delight your guests but also serve as a reminder of the joyous celebration they shared with you.

Photobooth Fun: Photobooths have become a must for the wedding party and guest to capture memorable moments. Provide props like oversized hats, feather boas, vintage frames, and signs with Southern phrases. This interactive activity will encourage guests to let loose and create entertaining snapshots that will be cherished for years to come.

Southern Food Stations: Enhance the culinary experience by incorporating interactive food stations featuring Southern delicacies. Offer a make-your-own biscuit bar, a grits station, or a fried chicken station where guests can customize their meals. Providing a variety of regional favorites will satisfy everyone’s taste buds and create a festive atmosphere centered around mouthwatering comfort food.

Quirky Southern Traditions: Take advantage of the unique Southern customs and incorporate them into your celebration. From burying the bourbon to warding off rain to hosting a cake pull ceremony for single friends to find their fortunes, these traditions can add an element of surprise and entertainment to your wedding day.

Southern Sendoff: Surround your farewell with well wishes. Create a dazzling send-off with a sparkler tunnel, lighting up the night and making for magical photos. A lantern release can create a breathtaking and symbolic send-off. Provide guests with biodegradable sky lanterns, and coordinate a designated area where everyone can release them into the night sky. Have guests blow bubbles, creating a whimsical and joyous atmosphere. This option is particularly great for daytime or outdoor weddings.

While Southern wedding etiquette upholds the traditions and elegance of the South, there’s plenty of room to infuse your celebration with a playful and enjoyable atmosphere. By incorporating these fun elements, you can create an unforgettable wedding experience that blends timeless Southern charm with delightful moments of joy and laughter. Let your Southern hospitality shine through and celebrate your love with a touch of lightheartedness that will leave a lasting impression on your guests.

Suit Him Up

TIPS FOR HIM FROM EXPERT CLOTHIER JOHN PICKENS

›Choose the Right Fit: Proper fit is crucial when it comes to suits. Avoid anything too baggy or too tight. Opt for a suit that hugs your body well, with tailored shoulders and sleeves that fall just at the wrist. The jacket should button comfortably without pulling, and the trousers should sit at your waist without being too loose or too tight.

›Consider the Dress Code: Different weddings may have varying dress codes, so it's important to

adhere to the specified guidelines. If the invitation mentions black-tie attire, opt for a classic tuxedo. For a formal wedding, a dark-colored suit paired with a crisp white shirt and tie is appropriate. For more casual weddings, you can experiment with lighter colors and patterns.

›Coordinate

with the Wedding

Colors: It's a nice touch to coordinate your suit with the wedding color scheme. If the wedding has specific colors, consider incorporating them into your outfit through accessories like your tie, pocket square, or even your socks. This shows attention to detail and demonstrates your effort to be a part of the celebration.

›Pay Attention to Accessories: Accessories can elevate your suit and add personality to your look. Choose a complementary tie that adds a pop of color or pattern. A pocket square is another excellent accessory that can add a touch of elegance. Additionally, consider your belt, shoes, and watch to ensure they match and enhance your overall appearance.

Charming Your Chakras

Your Guide to Balancing Your Energies with a Dash of Fun!

Greetings, fellow cosmic travelers! Are you feeling a little out of sync with the universe lately?

Fear not, for we have a delightful solution that will have you floating on clouds of positive vibes. It’s time to dive into the wonderful world of chakras and learn how to balance these mystical energy centers while keeping the fun alive. We had the pleasure of hosting a chakra balancing dinner in combination with some healing ladies at the Peace of Mind Center recently for our 318 Restaurant Week Dinner Experience and learned a lot about all things raising your vibration. So, put on your brightest aura and get ready to unleash your inner zen with a sprinkle of lightheartedness!

31

1 Root ChakRa: Grounding with a Bouncy Twist

Ah, the root chakra—the foundation of our being. To balance this energetic powerhouse, let’s embark on a playful journey. Picture yourself as a tree, firmly rooted in the earth. Now, get those happy feet moving and do the Root Chakra Dance! Wiggle your toes, stomp your feet, and feel the ground beneath you. Embrace the joy of staying grounded while tapping into your inner child.

2 SaCRal ChakRa: Embracing the Creative Splash

Ahoy, mates! The sacral chakra invites us to dive into the oceans of creativity. Find yourself a playful companion—a dolphin, perhaps? Let your inner child run free as you engage in artistic activities like painting, drawing, or dancing. Embrace the power of playfulness, and remember, the messier, the better! Unleash your imagination and let your creative waves flow.

Charming Your Chakras

3 SolaR PlExuS ChakRa: A Giggle-Filled Confidence Boost

Ever had a case of the giggles that made you feel invincible? That’s precisely what the solar plexus chakra thrives on—confidence and laughter! Channel your inner comedian and make it a point to find humor in everyday situations. Share jokes with friends, watch funny videos, and laugh like nobody’s watching. Remember, laughter truly is the best medicine for a vibrant solar plexus!

4 hEaRt ChakRa: Spreading Love, One Hug at a Time

The heart chakra yearns for love, compassion, and heartfelt connections. To balance it, let’s spread love like confetti! Organize a random acts of kindness day and surprise strangers with simple gestures of love and care. Give heartfelt compliments, offer warm hugs, or leave anonymous love notes for others to discover. Remember, every act of kindness ignites a sparkle in your heart.

32

5 thRoat ChakRa: Harmonizing with a Melodic Note

The throat chakra craves authentic expression and clear communication. What better way to balance it than through the magic of music? Grab a hairbrush or a microphone and sing your heart out! Belt out your favorite tunes, have a karaoke night with friends, or join a community choir. Let your voice soar and feel the vibrations harmonize your chakra energy.

6 thiRd EyE ChakRa: Embracing the Playfulness of Imagination

Welcome to the realm of intuition and imagination—the third eye chakra! Take a moment to channel your inner Sherlock Holmes or Nancy Drew and embark on a playful mystery-solving adventure. Engage in brain teasers, solve puzzles, or create your own treasure hunt. Let your imagination run wild as you connect the dots and embrace the joy of discovery.

7 CRown ChakRa: A Dance with the Stars

Ah, the crown chakra—our connection to the divine and cosmic energies. To balance this ethereal chakra, we’ll take a celestial dance. Picture yourself as a star, shimmering in the night sky. Twirl and sway with grace, feeling the cosmic energy flowing through your being. Embrace the awe-inspiring beauty of the universe and let your spirit soar among the constellations.

However, paying attention these signs can help you identify areas where you need to focus on bringing balance and harmony back your life. Seeking guidance from a qualified energy or practicing chakra-balancing techniques can support realigning and revitalizing your energy centers.

When our chakras are out of balance, it can affect our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
34
Here are some common signs that may indicate an imbalance in the chakras…

While there isn’t a direct correlation between specific foods and balancing chakras, maintaining a healthy and balanced diet can support overall well-being, which in turn positively impacts the chakra system.

Root Chakra (MULADHARA):

Grounding foods: Root vegetables (carrots, potatoes, beets), proteinrich foods (beans, lentils, tofu), and red-colored foods (strawberries, pomegranates) can help promote stability and grounding.

Green foods: Leafy greens (spinach, kale), broccoli, avocados, and green tea are known for their high nutritional value and can promote heart-centered energy.

Crown Chakra (SAHASRARA):

Clean and pure foods: Focus on light, plant-based meals, and fresh, organic ingredients to support clarity and connection to higher consciousness.

Third Eye Chakra

Hydrating foods: Water-rich fruits and vegetables like cucumbers, watermelon, and herbal infusions help keep the throat area moisturized and support clear communication.

Antioxidant-rich foods: Blueberries, purple grapes, dark chocolate, and omega-3 fatty acids found in walnuts and flaxseeds are known for their brain-boosting properties.

Here are some general guidelines and food suggestions that promote overall vitality and can contribute to a balanced energy flow…
35

Ultimately, it’s important to listen to your body’s unique needs and make choices that resonate with you. The intention behind your food choices, mindful eating practices, and maintaining a balanced overall diet will contribute to your overall well-being, which positively influences the harmony of your chakras.

Congratulations, dear reader! You’ve embarked on a whimsical journey through the captivating realm of chakras. Remember, balance doesn’t have to be serious and dull. A note from Dr. Jaya McSharma: Medical Marijuana is not the “party weed” one might remember from the 60s of 70s! People often think that this plant-based medicine is only for

hospice patients, or cancer patients, or children with severe epilepsy. The truth is, when done with supervision from a medical professional and the pharmacists at HOPE dispensary, medical marijuana can treat everything from anxiety to chronic pain to insomnia with fewer side effects and less long-term consequences than most pharmaceuticals. Anyone with any condition that is debilitating to their quality of life qualifies, and as a family medicine trained physician, I am qualified to treat patients of any age even those under 18! From Katharyn DeVille, Vice President of Marketing and Communications for Visit Shreveport-Bossier: 318 Restaurant Week was such a success,” said Katharyn DeVille, Vice President of Marketing and Communications for Visit Shreveport-Bossier. “More than fifty restaurants and ten diverse dining experiences grabbed the

attention of locals and visitors alike. We are a foodie destination, and we can’t wait to see 318 Restaurant Week grow even more, next year!

From Emerie Eck Holtzclaw, Event Coordinator for 318 Restaurant Week: When planning the dining experiences for 318 Restaurant Week, I wanted to make sure that we had events for everyone,” said Emerie Eck Holtzclaw, Event Coordinator for 318 Restaurant Week. “I had heard a few friends talking about the Peace of Mind Center and thought that we all need to realign with ourselves and become more balanced, so with collaboration from them, the Mind, Body, and Spirit Dining Experience was created for just that. By partnering with Chef Jessica Comegys, we all created a very memorable night for the attendees and 318 Restaurant Week.

a sufficient word for how I was feeling.

After that week of cheer camp, friends were made, and I could tell that these young ladies and their families were a lot like ours. Part one went ok.....on to part two. The first days of

School started and I must be honest, it’s been a great experience thus far. However, those first few weeks I anxiously awaited the stories that would be shared. No horror stories, they were normal school days, and I was shocked.

telling me the truth or are they hiding something kept passing through my mind. That's when this publicschool graduate asked a public-school question.

"Y'all seen any fights?".

The eyes in the backseat got big and they spoke of fights that would rival anything Conor McGregor could come up with. Maybe they aren't hiding things after all. Now, the most dreaded topic for a dad was on my mind. When would the boy talk arise?

I patiently waited.

hen November came, my introduction to boys would be tested.... along with my self-awareness as a dad. I will never forget the setting. It was a rainy Friday afternoon and I had picked P up at her maternal grandparent’s house after work. She and I had struggled a bit with communication for a few months so I knew the

conversation wouldn't be the best. A was at a friend's house so it was just me and Ms. P. As we rode down the driveway, I asked about her week. "It was good," she said. "Actually, it was great. I have a boyfriend". I felt the vibe of come at me bro brewing from the passenger seat.

I sat there soaking it in. It's the moment I knew would

39

come but had dreaded for so long. Looking back, it was a crossroads kind of moment. Going the wrong direction could spell disaster for communication with her for a long time. If I handle it the right way, this could be a game changer.

"Oh yeah? Tell me about him."

Trust me, this was the equivalent to how a man feels when asking for directions. It was painfully hard but unbelievably necessary.

Her mouth went into overdrive. She talked more to me in that ride than any other ride we've shared in a long time.

"Dad, we were all scared to tell you because we all thought you'd scream," she laughed.

I laughed too but inside I cried. My past behavior caused my baby girl to be scared to tell me something. A parent's worst nightmare. That day I made the decision to change and to be less overbearing and more understanding. The boy that she's "friends" with has turned out to be extremely respectful and seems to be very nice to her. It pains me to know that I could have ruined that with the wrong reaction.

A, on the other hand is still navigating the world of relationships but from the water’s edge. How I handled P has totally changed how A talks to me though. "Why do people lose interest so fast daddy? Like, they'll come at me and when I finally decide I like them, they're gone," she asked me not long ago.

"That's just how people are baby, but maybe they're looking for something you're not. You go at your speed. Don't adjust to anyone else," I quickly said from behind the steering wheel. She seemed to understand and coming from one who is navigating the whole world of relationships myself, I consider it a win.

Trust me, I know there are some Gen X'ers out there who

are having to re-navigate these same waters, reading this and thinking "Oh my gosh, she's so right!". Dating for us in 2023 is just as confusing as it is for our kids.

Now, if I can learn to apply my advice in my own dating life…

WRITING It All Down

41

Writing the Feelings Down:

Catharsis is the process of releasing and providing relief from strong or repressed emotions. IT is a wonderful process of healing that is necessary for the brain and body but often people skip this process and harbor the pent-up emotions and feelings in their bodies and minds so that it creates issues in the future. Many people never fully processed their feelings of major events from 911 to Covid shutdowns and others think that it was not a big deal to them because they were not there but the truth is that we all have feelings that need processing from big things to small things. When feelings are not processed, it ends up causing other issues that can affect learning and cognition as well as mental health and even physical health. Writing it all down is more than just a way to cathartically release feelings. It is also a primary way to process thoughts that allow for creative solutions to what seems like impossible situations. Human beings are social animals that rely on thought processes of interaction in order to fully process emotions. Emotions drive a lot of what we do and how we think.

42

Writing the Memories Down:

Memory is a funny thing in that how we perceive things at one-point changes as we learn. For example, when something first affects us, we have an immediate emotional reaction that may or may not translate positively. When that memory is added to or enhanced by future interactions, it may alter the initial memory changing the perspective. Many studies have been done on this and even investigative reports and fun shows like Brain Games because it is such a huge thing in our brains. It is always amazing when a group of people discuss an event that all attended and participated in but such different memories remain from positive to negative based on that perception which is why the old saying about walking a mile in another’s shoes is so true. Our emotions and experiences affect the way we record and hold onto certain memories. One person may feel positively while another sees it as less impactful or even more negatively. Writing down the memories helps us to store and restore the moments but also allows us to look back with perspective. When I was a

young girl, my grandmother lived with us and she had memory issues which I remember vividly and associated with dementia but only recently when discussing it with my parents was I able to arrive at the full picture which completely changed my perspective. My grandmother never had dementia but had trauma and a small stroke from a dental procedure gone wrong! WOW! What a difference that piece of knowledge had on my perception of reality. Writing or journaling the memories of each day can be important for the future as the way we encode certain memories is all based on perspective. A fun game for this can be to take a cookie sheet and put 10 items on it, walk around the group and show the items the cover them with a towel. Ask each person to recall as many items as they can and one associated memory with that item. It is hilarious and insightful as to what we learn with this small game. Recording memories is not just about capturing the moment in photos but also in writing as those feelings and thoughts will change.

Writing the Moments Down:

Recording every moment in the baby book was great for the first child but gets progressively worse with the succession of children. The moments are not less valuable at all as if anything, they are more valuable. What gets lost is time. Time as an asset is suddenly in huge demand and there is not a priority to record it all down on paper so the moments often get lost. Each and every moment cannot be recorded on paper as this would demand more time than one has but it is important that the time is set aside to record the moments. When we were growing up, there was a family Bible that had a lot of important info recorded

in the front of it. That info of writing down history has taken a back seat but it is an important part of our lives and for this, it is important to take the moments to write them down. I suggest a running journal. Just a simple composition book where you can stop at the end of the day or beginning of the day and record the moments. Moments that are simple, fun, and shared need to be recorded. Some people do this simply in a blessing jar each day or by writing it down in their notes on their phones. Whichever way you decide, write down the moments and cherish each one as they become memories.

MEN'S FERTILITY Is it on the Decline?

In 2022, a review article reported that, globally, male fertility was on the decline. Sperm counts decreased by approximately 1.2% from years 1973 to 2018. Specifically, sperm counts decreased from an average of 104 million sperm/mL to 49 million sperm/mL. The decline was thought to be from a combination of lifestyle and environmental factors. This was clearly an alarming finding, especially since infertility is on the rise. Approximately 1 in 6 couples now experience infertility! Unfortunately, this is a sensitive subject and many couples do not feel comfortable discussing their struggles publicly. This sadly leads to couples feeling alone and helpless during a very tough period in life. Fortunately, there is a lot that we CAN do to help improve and treat infertility.

According to another recent article, male infertility contributes to approximately half of all cases of infertility and affects approximately 7% of men. It is very important to have both partners evaluated simultaneously if there are infertility concerns. Typically, most reproductive doctors recommend trying for at least one year of having unprotected sex prior to having an evaluation for infertility. It is also fine to shorten this period to 6 months of trying if there are obvious infertility concerns or risk factors, such as a prior history of cancer, female age over 35, irregular menstrual cycles or a prior history of surgeries that place the reproductive tract at risk.

Female patients will typically see their OB/GYN for a fertility evaluation, and men will normally see a urologist. In order to fully evaluate a male patient for infertility a few pieces of information will be needed. First, the urologist will need to take a good reproductive history and perform a physical exam. The male genitalia do need to be examined at some point to make sure there are no abnormalities, but this is a very quick exam and not

47

painful. It will also be important to check male hormones that could cause infertility. Testosterone and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) are two hormones that can easily be checked with a blood test. Testosterone is the male hormone that is important for sex drive, muscle mass and sperm production. FSH is produced by the brain and is very important for sperm production. Importantly, if the testosterone is low, you do NOT want to take supplemental testosterone such as injections. Supplemental testosterone is very bad for your fertility. The testicles are an organ that is responsible for making sperm and testosterone, and when men inject testosterone, the body becomes dependent on it and the testicles stop producing testosterone and sperm! In order to prevent this situation, urologists often prescribe estrogen blockers such as clomiphene citrate. This is an oral medication taken daily and is fertility friendly. It helps to increase natural production of testosterone from the testicles and can also improve fertility.

Semen testing is also a very important part of evaluating men for infertility. There are many ways to get this test done. Testing ranges from labs that allow you to collect a semen specimen on site versus companies that allow you to collect one in the privacy of your own home. These at-home tests include a liquid preservative, and the specimen is shipped overnight to a lab for testing. A man will want to abstain from sex for at least 3 days prior to testing to ensure accurate results.

Varicoceles are a common cause of infertility in men. These are dilated veins around the testicle inside the scrotum. They can cause pain, low testosterone and low sperm counts. Approximately 15% of men have varicoceles, but the good news is that most of them are small and do not cause issues. For the men that do have a varicocele that causes fertility issues, there is a minor outpatient surgery to correct this, and it is covered by insurance.

Men cycle their sperm production every 72

days, so, unfortunately, it can often take up to 6-9 months before a man sees improvement in his semen parameters after surgical repair.

Sexual dysfunction is also a big part of infertility for men. Approximately 1 in 4 men experience sexual dysfunction associated with infertility. As time passes, the couple typically may feel increased stress and anxiety surrounding the problem. Men in this situation can often experience issues with erectile dysfunction or trouble reaching climax. This situation only compounds the couple’s infertility struggles as sex often must be scheduled and repeated around the female’s ovulation cycles. Thankfully, there are medications and counseling that can help greatly with this situation and the prognosis is very good. Low dose tadalafil or sildenafil, which are both generic and very affordable, can be extremely helpful in this situation. It is also important to discuss lifestyle changes that can improve men’s fertility without medications or surgery. We know that obesity negatively impacts male fertility and losing weight through diet, exercise or a combination can greatly improve testosterone and sperm counts. We also know that smoking tobacco or THC (marijuana) can impair sperm production. Smoking cessation can be difficult, but it is possible. Excessive alcohol use is problematic for overall male health, but the occasional drink does not appear to hurt men’s fertility. There are also over the counter male fertility supplements that help to improve fertility. Patients must be careful to find ones that are affordable, as there is no difference in how well they work (regardless of what the bottle claims!).

Male and female infertility is an increasing problem and there are multiple factors that account for it. The obesity epidemic and environmental factors are certainly major contributors, but couples are also, understandably, delaying having children to focus on establishing their careers first. As a society, we must get better about discussing infertility, so our friends and patients are not suffering alone. Thankfully there are many things that we can do to help couples during this difficult time.

Make-A-Wish Make-A-Wish

Like most great endeavors in life, it started with two seemingly simple concepts: a wish—and a desire to make a difference for someone else. Christopher James Greicius was only five years old when he was diagnosed with Stage 4 leukemia. Despite the challenges caused by the illness, Chris maintained his trademark positivity and devoted his time to pursuing his number one wish: to become a police officer. As a friend of the Greicius family, Tommy Austin knew well the details of Chris’ journey; as a federal agent with the US Customs Service, Chris’ wish was especially meaningful to Tommy. With his counterparts in local and state agencies around Phoenix, where Chris lived, Tommy created a plan to grant Chris’ wish.

On April 29, 1980, having been told that Chris was near the end of his journey, Tommy and his colleagues brought his wish to life, as he became the first—and only—honorary Trooper in the history of the Arizona State Police. Wearing his official ASP uniform, Trooper Greicius rode in a police helicopter, patrolled his neighborhood, and even drove

a police motorcycle. Shortly after, Chris passed away. He was seven years old. The impact of Chris’ wish was felt throughout his community. For Tommy, and the other officers who granted it, the experience sparked a sobering thought: although Chris was a unique child, the battle he had faced was not. Realizing that more wishes needed to be granted, Tommy, Linda Pauling (Chris’ mother), and several others created what is now the Make-AWish Foundation, turning one wish into an international movement that has transformed millions of lives.

Make-A-Wish Texas Gulf Coast and Louisiana is one of 58 chapters throughout the United States and its territories. Since our inception in 1984, we have granted more than 10,600 wishes to local children, and, during fiscal year 2022, we granted 572 wishes—a record for the organization. We serve all 64 parishes in Louisiana and 47 counties in Texas.

A spark of hope can change everything...

1 | What motivates you to continue the mission for Make-A-Wish Foundation specifically?

Each day, we know that wish kids and their families are counting on us to bring their wish to life in a magical way. Make-A-Wish provides a bright light in the lives of these kids during a critical time when hope, strength, and joy are needed most. Seeing the smiles and joy that we bring to them through their wishes is what we are here to do.

2 | Can you share an experience where you found joy in helping grant the wish of a child or family going through a difficult time?

One wish that is forever etched in my memory is Juan’s wish for a baby grand piano. Juan lives in the New Orleans area, and he shared that classical music was a major element of his treatment. When he was in the hospital, he would hear the music for hours at a time, and he grew to love the complexity and uplifting melodies. His wish was born out of a difficult time, but it became a symbol of his courage in his battle. We worked with a local music company in Metairie, Louisiana, to grant Juan’s wish. Being there with his family and his music teacher when we presented it to him was magical. Make-AWish provided him with not just an incredible instrument, but a vehicle for hope and joy.

3 | Tell us about a time when you had to coordinate and collaborate to grant the wish of a child that was out of the ordinary.

One of my favorite aspects of Make-A-Wish is that there are no “ordinary” wishes. The creativity and imagination of our wish kids is beautiful and limitless. Make-A-Wish does not offer a “menu” of wishes; kids can (and do!) wish for anything! The magic of Make-A-Wish is that we get to the

heart of every wish and grant it in a way that is truly lifechanging for the child. In Shreveport, 19-year-old Max had played golf with his father and brothers his entire life, but his cancer battle made him take a break from the game. As soon as he was able, he wanted to resume playing with his family, so he wished for a new set of clubs and accessories. We granted his wish and arranged for him to play his first round with his new clubs with professional player Philip Barbaree (an LSU alum). Our wish kids are very “future forward,” and many of them make wishes with long-term goals in mind. Recently, we granted a wish for tuition assistance to Louisiana Tech for a wish kid from the New Orleans area. These kids invest in their future through their wishes, and it highlights one of the most common misconceptions about Make-A-Wish: that we only serve terminally-ill children. However, more than 70 percent of wish kids live into adulthood, most of them beating their illness completely.

4 | How does Make-A-Wish engage and involve volunteers in fulfilling wishes while ensuring a positive and meaningful experience for both the volunteers and the wish families?

It is not hyperbole to say that volunteers are the lifeline of our organization. They play an integral role in every aspect of Make-A-Wish, from working with families to fundraising and representing us at community events. Our staff prioritizes thanking our volunteers every day. We host an annual event at which we recognize our Volunteer of the Year and celebrate those who have earned the “Tommy Austin Award,” presented in-person by Make-A-Wish co-founder Tommy Austin. There is almost no limit to the ways someone can volunteer with Make-A-Wish, and that is what separates us from so many other organizations. Volunteers know that they are impacting wish kids from their own communities. Everyone has a gift that they can share in some way with Make-A-Wish in support of our mission.

5 | Make-A-Wish Foundation aims to bring hope and joy to children facing critical illnesses. How do you and the wonderful staff at Make-A-Wish ensure that the wish experience truly reflects this mission?

Every decision we make is child-focused; it is our most important core value. It is a privilege to serve each wish family, and we have a duty to bring their wish to life in the way that is most impactful to them. Every child comes to us at a different place in their medical journey and with unique challenges that they face. We follow their lead throughout the wish. One of the most powerful aspects of a wish is the excitement that we build for the kids leading up to the day their wish is granted. Every month, they receive something in the mail from Make-AWish that tells them we are thinking of them, we are cheering for them, and we are going to bring their wish to life.

A Room Fit for Princess Casey Jane

“Though She Be But Little, She Is Fierce”

Casey Jane, an eight-year-old princess, small in stature but giant in spirit, was born with a heart defect known as HLHS (hypoplastic left heart syndrome). Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is a birth defect that affects normal blood flow through the heart. As the baby develops during pregnancy, the left side of the heart does not form correctly. Hypoplastic left heart syndrome is one type of congenital heart defect. Congenital means present at birth.

Because a baby with this defect needs surgery or other procedures soon after birth, HLHS is considered a critical congenital heart defect (CCHD).

Hypoplastic left heart syndrome with mitral and atrial stenosis has presented many challenges for Casey Jane. Throughout Casey Jane’s life she has struggled with osteopenia,

feeding difficulties, failure to thrive, cyclic vomiting syndrome, developmental delays, ADHD, Gerd, and she has undergone three open heart surgeries. Casey Jane has had nine bone fractures due to brittle bones from feeding difficulties, she had a gastrostomy feeding tube for seven of her eight years, and has been hospitalized over thirty times… But all of these challenges have proven to be no match for Casey Jane. She is spunky, strong and really loves purple.

Casey Jane’s ultimate wish was to have a complete bedroom makeover, fit for a princess, with bunk beds like her brother’s, and lots of purple.

51

Lola Magazine had the great honor of helping bring Casey Jane’s wish to life this past spring. As excited as Casey Jane was to see her new bedroom, it was beyond thrilling for us at Lola Magazine to watch her reaction when her Make-A-Wish was granted. We extend our gratitude to The Make-A-Wish Foundation for allowing us to be a part of Casey Jane’s big day and for all the hard work and dedication they put in to bringing hope and happiness to children and families in our area.

Since 2015, Katy Build supporters, sponsors and players have contributed over $200,000 for home builds in honor and memory of Katy, Emily and Molly.

Through this generosity and community partnerships between Asbury United Methodist Church, Simple Church, 1st Bossier, City of Bossier and Fuller Center for Housing of Northwest Louisiana, we have been able to provide housing for 1st time veterans in Bossier City.

About Katy Watkins

Since 2011, three churches… Asbury, Simple Church, and First Bossier have sponsored Katy, Molly and Emily legacy build homes in the Scott-Dickerson and Yarbourgh subdivisions in Bossier City. They joined together to turn a tragic ending into a triumphant beginning for local veterans. Emily Perdue, 16, Katy Watkins, 16, and Molly Reed, 15, were killed in an automobile accident in October 2006 while driving on I-49 through DeSoto Parish. Through this tragedy, their church homes have found a way to keep their memory and servant hearts alive.

How It Began

The Katy Build story began in 2011. Fuller Center for Housing of NWLA partnered with Asbury United Methodist Church in Bossier City, LA to begin a legacy build in honor and memory of Katy Watkins. Katy lost her life in a car accident in 2006 along with Molly Reed and Emily Perdue. Katy was a servant leader who was very involved at Asbury UMC. Katy gave much of her time making a difference in the lives around her. This partnership represents much of what Katy, Emily, and Molly are about— love and service for our fellow neighbor.

House, also Fuller’s 50th home build in our community. Lonnie and Rosalyn Carmack’s home shares the lot of Katy Build I, also called Katy’s Corner.

In 2015, our partnership grew with the commitments of First Baptist Bossier and Simple Church to build homes honoring Emily and Molly.

In October of 2017, Simple Church completed Molly’s House and were able to provide housing for Sterling and Rhonda Combs, also veterans and Fuller Center’s 57th home in our area.

Emily Build was sponsored and built by volunteers from First Baptist Bossier and was dedicated to the family of Melanie Moss on December 21, 2019—Fuller Center’s 59th house and the fourth home in Bossier City.

Volunteers served as court monitors and thanks to a generous sponsor our junior players received a complimentary t-shirt and a collection of prizes. Our winners were recognized and spirit medals named after Katy, Molly and Emily were given to three juniors who exhibit good sportsmanship and kindness both off and on the court.

For the last two years we have included a Tennis Apprentice division for new players. This idea was developed by Todd Killen to include Bossier’s Tennis Apprentice players during our weekend. We have been excited to watch it grow, and it is

A home built for a deserving first-time veteran homeowner, Charles and Vernita Brown, in the Scott-Dickerson neighborhood. This first Fuller Center home in Bossier City was dedicated on August 11, 2012, which was also Fuller Center’s 45th home build but the first one in Bossier City. This new construction was the first in the neighborhood in almost 50 years. This was achieved through the generosity and volunteers of many in the community.

On May 10, 2014, family, friends, volunteers, and sponsors gathered to dedicate the Katy Build II, Barry Hughes

Asbury United Methodist Church completed the 60th Fuller House next door to Emily Build in the Scott-Dickerson neighborhood. This Katy Build home was built in honor of Joe and Jean Elgin, called the Joe and Jean House and was dedicated to the Watley family in March of 2020.

These builds would not be possible without the assistance of sponsors, friends and funds raised from our Katy Build Tennis weekend.

One of the best qualities of the Katy Build Tennis Tournament is creating opportunities for juniors and new adult players to participate. In years past we have hosted Red Ball Events for juniors, but this year we elevated their experience by introducing a mini tournament. This event served as our official kick-off to our weekend, encouraging

wonderful to see new players alongside our open division players for all levels.

Katy Build is set apart with the outpouring of support of local businesses, restaurants and individual donors who rally around our mission of making a difference. Making a difference in Bossier City by helping veterans receive housing while honoring Katy, Molly and Emily. The tennis community has embraced our mission and we are able to continue because of our annual tennis fundraising event.

When we share the inspiring story of Katy, Molly and Emily’s lives and commitment to serving others or how we honor them through our legacy builds or people who know their story or families, the support is amazing, and locals want to help and give!

GIRL’S TRIP TO TUPELO

Why You SHOULD & What TO DO

If you think of Tupelo as “that other Elvis place that’s not Graceland,” then stop what you’re doing and start planning your trip to Tupelo. While this small town (population 37,000 as of 2021) in northeast Mississippi has lots of activity choices for everyone, such as families and multigenerational groups, Tupelo shines when it comes to girlfriend getaways. If you’ve been seeking the perfect place in the southeast for your next girl’s trip, then look no further.

IT’S TUPELO.

59

Bespoke Denim and a Boutique Hotel in the Middle of all the Action

If you really want to treat yourself, get fitted for a pair of raw denim jeans made just for you. Blue Delta’s tagline is “One Size Fits One.” When you buy a pair of Blue Delta jeans, you’ll be thoroughly measured, which results in creating your own personal pattern. You choose the style, color, and stitching; your jeans will be made by hand in Blue Delta’s Tupelo warehouse and shipped to you four to six weeks after your initial fitting. But that’s not even the coolest part.

Blue Delta has a partnership with Hotel Tupelo, which is an upscale boutique hotel in the heart of downtown. Book your

have the option to go to the Blue Delta warehouse, which is just a short drive from downtown, but the rockstar experience of having someone come to you to measure you for your personal pattern is something that elevates your girl’s trip.

If you really want to take your trip up a notch, book the King Suite or the Premier Suite. Both are spacious corner suites with two bathrooms, a dining area, a wet bar, and a luxurious king-sized bed. The King Suite is subtly Elvis-themed. Hotel Tupelo has an onsite restaurant/bar, Jobos, and loaner bikes to explore the city.

Made in Tupelo

The shopping in Tupelo is plentiful. There’s a great balance of name-brand retail stores and locally-owned boutiques. From designer clothes and upscale home goods to madein-Tupelo artwork and pottery, you can shop to your heart’s content here. Tupelo is a true maker’s town, and you can schedule your vacation around a shared activity that allows you to create a one-of-a-kind tangible memory.

Take a pottery class at Midnite Pottery. Be warned – you’ll want to buy all the things and make your own treasure. Stop by the bouquet bar at Fresh Farm and create your own flower arrangement or check their calendar for other classes and seminars that give you the opportunity to create your own projects, such as windchime making and vase painting.

I saved the best for last – the most fun you’ll have making something in Tupelo is at CharCutie Tupelo. Part of the reason I give CharCutie top billing is how fun is it to make something you can enjoy eating afterward. If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to make an amazing charcuterie board, owner Stephanie Hall is the person to know. From scheduled events that anyone can sign up to attend, such as bourbon and charcuterie pairings, to private classes that teach you how to create an epic brunch board.

Don’t have time for a full class or event? Don’t miss stopping by CharCutie’s grab-and-go section for pre-made boards and boxes that are perfect for having a picnic in one of Tupelo’s many parks or green spaces.

If you’ve never tried mead, which is wine made from fermented honey, a girl’s trip to Tupelo is the perfect time for your first sip. All mead served at The Queen’s Reward Meadery is made onsite with local Tupelo Honey. Like any beverage, mead is best enjoyed with friends. The Queens Reward has both indoor and patio seating. The meadery is located just off downtown Tupelo, but it sits far back from the street and has a

nice, large yard, so there’s a feeling of seclusion.

If you’re not a sweet wine drinker, don’t count this one out. Even though mead is made from honey, not all mead is sweet. Even the sweeter varieties of mead at the Queen’s Reward are sweet and tart versus tasting like a mouth full of sugar. And, if you visit Tupelo on a hot day, I have two words for you: mead slushie.

If you get to meet the queen herself, owner Jeri Carter, you are in for a treat. Not only does she craft delicious mead,

but she’s an A+ storyteller. Schedule your trip to the Queen’s Reward early in your trip for two reasons: first, because you might find yourself wanting a second trip and second, Jeri will tell you as much about Tupelo as she will about mead.

Tupelo’s Cocktail Trail

Tupelo’s Cocktail Trail has eight participating locations, all walkable from the downtown area. Grab a cocktail card at

61

the Visitor’s Center to pick up your cocktail card, then visit all eight locations, order their signature drink, and get your card stamped. Once you’re finished, return your card to the Visitor’s Center for a complimentary #MyTupelo cocktail shaker.

There’s no requirement to complete the stops in a specific order or within a specific timeframe, so you can take your time and sip safely and responsibly. While you’re navigating the cocktail trail, you’ll see many colorful guitar sculptures that line the streets of Tupelo – there are 25 in all. Try to find them all and snap some fun selfies.

Immerse Yourself in Mississippi Art

When you’re shopping and exploring downtown Tupelo, save some time to pop into the Caron Gallery on West Main Street. The gallery showcases only Mississippi artists who produce work across a variety of mediums. There’s always art available for sale, and the gallery also offers custom consultation services in case your visit inspires you to start collecting art or add to an existing collection.

The Caron Gallery also offers Art and Wine Dinners periodically. You can see highlights from past dinners on their website. If you want to know if your visit will align with one of these events, contact the Caron Gallery in advance. The Caron Gallery has a second location in Laurel, a name that fans of the HGTV show Home Town will recognize. Laurel is 200 miles south of Tupelo if you feel like more Mississippi. Fun fact: Ben and Erin wear Blue Delta jeans, and they’ve been spotted in and around Hotel Tupelo with their daughters.

Skip the Peanut Butter & Banana Sandwich and Get a Donut Instead

It’s a commonly accepted fact that one of Elvis’ favorite foods was a peanut butter and banana sandwich. If you’re looking to indulge your tastebuds in Tupelo, swing by Connie’s Fried Chicken in the morning for a fresh-out-of-the-fryer blueberry cake donut. Connie’s only makes one kind of donut, and they’ve perfected

the blueberry cake.

Live music venue and restaurant, The Blue Canoe regularly buys up the excess donuts from Connie’s every day and uses them to make a blueberry bread pudding. Don’t feel like you have to choose – part of the fun of being on vacation is indulging a little, so go ahead and have the donut for breakfast and the dessert with your dinner.

Pay Homage to “The King”

Even though there’s so much more than Elvis lore in Tupelo, the King of Rock and Roll is the reason Tupelo is on the map in the first place. Visit Elvis’ birthplace and his boyhood church which was moved to the grounds of the birthplace. Downtown Tupelo has lots of Elvis murals and monuments that highlight Elvis’ early life – he moved to Memphis with his family when he was 13 or 14.

Don’t miss a stop at Tupelo Hardware Company, where Elvis bought his first guitar. Stand in the exact spot Elvis stood in when the clerk handed him the guitar out of the same display case that’s still in use today. X marks the spot.

Getting to Tupelo

Tupelo is 365 miles from Baton Rouge, which is about a sixhour drive, excluding stops. If you want to fly, Tupelo Regional Airport is serviced only by Contour Airlines, so you’ll likely have to connect in Memphis or Nashville or fly to one of those two airports and rent a car. Tupelo is 115 miles – about a twohour drive – from Memphis, so flying there can significantly slice your drive time.

More Trip Planning Inspiration

Check out www.tupelo.net for more ideas, and swing by the visitor’s center on East Main Street once you roll into town for your Tupelo Cocktail Trail card and any brochures, maps, and in-person assistance you might need.

My Skin My Way Loving The Skin I’m In

Skincare is always the first and last part of my day. As a young girl, before my mother would even consider allowing me to wear makeup, she insisted I learn how to properly clean my face. Why? Because my mother thought selling Mary Kay products was next to being a dermatologist. As I got older, a warm towel quickly became a thing of the past and bottles and jars of cleansers and moisturizers began to consume the little counter space I shared with my sister.

Today, I wear my skin proudly and want to ensure I look my best no matter what comes my way. Now fifty-one years later, as a professional medical esthetician, I have learned skin care for women of color has significantly changed. So many of my women of color tell me how their mothers and grandmothers used nothing but water, a cleansing cream, and maybe witch hazel as a toner and vaseline as a moisturizer. Our grandmothers and great-grandmothers dare not think about sunscreen or exfoliating. They wore big sunhats, drank water, ate what they had left after feeding the rest of the family and eight hours of sleep was not heard of.

Making time to take care of our skin is an important way to put ourselves first every day. Because of the melanin in our skin, women of color have skin concerns that others might not experience as aggressively, including hyperpigmentation,

overactive sebaceous glands, larger pores, and chronic or cystic acne. Along with those concerns, our skin is actually more sensitive to various ingredients and the sun. Cleansing, moisturizing, and treating our skin protects it from harmful effects. Creating a skincare routine can be overwhelming and confusing, but the best treatments and products yield the greatest results. Please know it’s not the cost of the products or the name on the box but the quality of the ingredients and how they are used that gives true anti-aging results. When it comes to skincare, consistency is key to seeing results.

I created My Skin My Way to do just that. You determine how you feel about yourself, what you see in the mirror, and how hard you do or don’t work on looking and feeling your best. The products took time and belief that I could create a skincare line that I knew would work for all women, but address specific skincare challenges for women of color that other lines have only addressed on a superficial level. I challenge you to begin today. Start with the skincare basics and create a signature skincare ritual unique to you. And why not use our skincare solutions? Commit to healthy skin that will serve you well for a lifetime. Enjoy the benefits and share that legacy with other young women the way my mother did with me.

Tips to get started

REMOVE YOUR MAKEUP ------------------------

We have all heard it umpteen times! Always remove your makeup at the end of the day. Leaving makeup on for prolonged periods of time clogs your pores. Constantly leaving makeup on adds an average of seven years to the skin’s surface. Taking the time to remove your makeup will help keep your skin healthy. There are a multitude of products that can do the trick, but keep in mind, removing your makeup before treating it with cleansing creams and treatments allows for better penetration of other products. Simple things like makeup wipes and micellar water before beginning your anti-aging routine will not only help in saving on your other products but will also yield better results.

PRO TIP: Keeping your makeup brushes clean will prevent the build-up of bacteria and dirt on them. Experts suggest washing your makeup brushes every week. Having clean makeup brushes gives a better makeup application as well! Use a simple gentle cleanser or baby shampoo to clean brushes.

STEP ONE CLEANSER ----------------------------

Cleansing creates a clean and clear skin canvas. This step is essential if you want your skin to soak up all the love and hydration you give it. When choosing a cleanser, opt for one that addresses your skin concern or preference. Based on your skin type, you may try a gentle cleanser, oil-control, or hydrating cleanser. (My Skin My Way Green Tea Moisturizing Cleanser) great for transitioning from topical store products to pharmaceutical or medical-grade anti-aging products.)

EXFOLIATOR --------------------------------------------

Exfoliating the skin 1-2 times a week starting out gets rid of dirt build-up, dead skin cells, and blackheads. There are many products and ways to exfoliate the skin. You can even exfoliate every day with the right product for your skin. Make sure to do a nightly routine because the skin cells turn over at night. This is the best treatment for having your skin look and feel like a newborn baby. (My Skin My Way Glycolic Pads and AHA Pads are excellent exfoliators based on skin type and condition of the skin.)

TONER -------------------------------------------------------

Toner is an essential step in any skincare routine, even though some women leave it out. Toner cleans out trapped dirt and oils and balances your skin’s pH. Toner can as well be used as a hyperpigmentation treatment and to even skin tone, depending on its active ingredients. (Phytomer Rosee Visage is perfect for all skin types as a toner but also works as a make-up remover.) We do love a multi-purpose product!

SERUM-------------------------------------------------------

Serums are the granddaddy of skincare products. Serums can be targeted for specific treatments such as skin discoloration, acne, antiaging, hydration, or moisturizing the skin. Please note there is a difference between being dehydrated and being dry. If your skin lacks water, it is dehydrated. If your skin lacks sebum, a natural substance created by sebaceous glands in the skin, you have dry skin. When applying serum,

pat the product into your skin for the product to fully absorb and enjoy the full benefit. (My Skin My Way Vitamin C or Hydrating Serum works perfectly for discolored or dehydrated skin types)

MOISTURIZER ------------------------------------------

Moisturizers lock in all those great products you just applied to the skin while keeping it moisturized and hydrated. Hydrating the skin is important for all skin types. During morning use, try using a lightweight moisturizer that contains SPF to prevent damage to the skin and from becoming oily throughout the day (more on sunscreen later!) Using heavier creams at night allows time for maximum absorption, hydrating, and rejuvenation so you have healthy skin the next day. Some skin types are dryer than others and may require a heavier moisturizer for both morning and evening treatments. (My Skin My Way Fractioned HA Niacinamide Nourishing Moisturizer for discolored and dry or dehydrated skin.)

PRO TIP: Take into consideration the climates and seasons when considering what moisturizer would be best. Some climates are drier or more humid than others. These conditions play a role in your skincare choices.

EYE CREAM ----------------------------------------------

Eye cream is essential to tackle everyday issues such as puffy eyes and dark circles while also delaying advancing signs of aging. The under-eye area is sensitive and prone to fine lines and deeper wrinkles. The skin around the eyes is thinner than on the rest of the face, so be gentle when applying your eye treatments. (My Skin My Way Advanced Retinol Eye Repair)

PRO TIP: When applying eye cream, use your ring finger for the least amount of pressure to prevent tugging the skin. Also remember to wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap before applying any skincare product to prevent reintroducing germs back onto the skin’s surface.

SPF -------------------------------------------------------------

Women of color often hear the myth that our skin does not burn. While we may not always see the damage to our skin, it is there! Sunscreen is a must-have product in your morning routine. Sunscreen protects your skin from harmful UV rays that cause sunspots, aging, and wrinkles. There are several easy ways to add SPF into your routine. Try using a moisturizer with SPF or a lightweight SPF. SPF is your friend! Many women of color do not like the way SPF makes their skin feel. It is many times tacky, heavy, and greasy, and most of all, makes their skin appear gray or faded. This comes from a product in most SPFs called titanium dioxide. I made sure when formulating my SPF to make them all hydrating, moisturizing, and non-have harmful ingredients. (My Skin My Way has many formulas based on skin type but our newest is a 50 SPF that moisturizes and hydrates without being heavy even in Louisiana summers.) Aging well starts with making time for yourself and learning how to love the skin you’re in. Taking care of yourself is a choice. Now how, if, why and when is all decided by YOU!

The AI Renaissance How ChatGPT is Reshaping the Future

WRITTEN BY DR. KAREN PENDLETON
67

Artificial intelligence (AI), which has become an integral part of our lives, has also been one of the most exciting and rapidly evolving fields of technology in recent years. It has revolutionized various industries and has enhanced human capabilities…From self-driving cars to personalized advertising, to even the way we live and work. One of the most promising applications of AI is in the field of conversational agents, also known as chatbots. With the rise of natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML), chatbots have become increasingly sophisticated, leading to the development of models like ChatGPT. ChatGPTs are designed to understand and respond to human language with greater accuracy and complexity than ever before.

The term “Renaissance” is used metaphorically to signify a historical period of significant advancement, revival, or rebirth…a time of great cultural, artistic and intellectual growth in Europe. By using the term “AI Renaissance”, the title suggests that there is a similar resurgence happening in the field of Artificial Intelligence, particularly in the realm of conversational AI, represented by ChatGPT. It implies that ChatGPT is at the forefront of a new era of innovation and progress, akin to the transformative impact the Renaissance had on various aspects of human civilization.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a type of conversational AI model that uses a deep learning approach to generate responses to user queries. Developed by OpenAI, ChatGPT is based on the GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) architecture, which has been used for a variety of NLP tasks, including language translation and sentiment analysis. ChatGPT is specifically designed to understand and respond to natural language queries in a conversational manner, making it an ideal tool for chatbots and other conversational agents. In essence, ChatGPT is a prime example of how AI can be used to facilitate humanmachine interactions.

How does ChatGPT work?

ChatGPT works by using a deep neural network to analyze and understand the context of a user’s query. The model is pretrained on a large body of text data, which allows it to identify patterns and relationships in language that can be used to generate responses. When a user inputs a query into a chatbot or other conversational agent, ChatGPT analyzes the query and generates a response based on the context and content of the input.

One of the key features of ChatGPT is its ability to generate responses that are contextually relevant and appropriate. This is achieved through the use of attention mechanisms, which allow the model to focus on specific parts of the input when

generating a response. For example, if a user asks a chatbot about the weather in a specific location, ChatGPT will use attention mechanisms to focus on the location information and generate a response that is specific to that location.

Another important feature of ChatGPT is its ability to generate responses that are diverse and engaging. This is achieved through the use of a sampling technique called top-k sampling, which allows the model to generate a range of different responses based on the probability distribution of the output. By selecting from the top-k most likely responses, ChatGPT can generate responses that are both accurate and varied, making the conversation more engaging and interesting for the user.

Applications of ChatGPT

ChatGPT has a wide range of potential applications in the field of conversational agents. One of the most common applications is in customer service chatbots, where the model can be used to provide quick and accurate responses to user queries. ChatGPT can also be used in virtual assistants, such as Siri, Google or Alexa, to provide more sophisticated and engaging responses to user queries.

ChatGPT and Education:

A potential application of ChatGPT is in educational chatbots, where the model can be used to provide personalized learning experiences for students. By analyzing the student’s input and generating responses that are specific to their needs, ChatGPT can help students learn in a more engaging and effective way.

ChatGPT could also be used in language learning. For example, ChatGPT could provide feedback on pronunciation, suggest new vocabulary, and provide explanations of grammatical concepts. Additionally, ChatGPT could be used to facilitate conversation practice, allowing students to practice their language skills in a low-stress environment.

ChatGPT and E-commerce:

ChatGPT could be used in E-commerce to provide personalized shopping experiences. For example, a chatbot powered by ChatGPT could ask a user questions about their preferences and use that information to suggest products that are likely to be of interest to them. In addition, ChatGPT could answer common questions about products and provide assistance with the checkout process. By providing a personalized shopping experience, ChatGPT could improve customer satisfaction and increase sales.

ChatGPT and Business:

Artificial intelligence (AI) and ChatGPT are seen as a massive platform shift that is taking the business landscape by storm. Applying AI augmentation, efficiency and acceleration, it can certainly have a huge impact on businesses in the

Algorithms trained on biased data can perpetuate existing biases and discriminate against certain groups. Striking the right balance between innovation and ethics remains a challenge.

› Dependence and Reliability: Relying heavily on AI can create dependency issues, especially if systems fail or make incorrect decisions. The reliability and robustness of AI algorithms need to be continuously tested and improved to ensure they perform as intended.

› Lack of Emotional Intelligence: AI lacks emotional intelligence and human empathy, which can be crucial in certain contexts. While AI-powered chatbots can handle routine customer interactions, complex emotional support or nuanced discussions may require human intervention. Also, by going really extreme in using AI, our content and copy can present really bland, and that’s not good. We shouldn’t use AI with the expectation that it›s going to fully do everything for us, for we’ll be disappointed. Focus on efficiency and work strategically with AI.

Cons of ChatGPT:

› Lack of Contextual Understanding: While ChatGPT can generate coherent responses, it may sometimes lack contextual understanding. It can provide plausible-sounding answers without fully grasping the underlying concepts, leading to inaccuracies or misleading information.

› Potential for Misuse: ChatGPT can be manipulated to generate biased or harmful content, i.e., inaccurate information about people, places, or facts. In the wrong hands, it may be used for spreading misinformation, phishing attacks or generating abusive and offensive messages. Safeguards and content moderation mechanisms are crucial to prevent such misuse.

› Lack of Critical Thinking: ChatGPT operates based on patterns and data it has been trained on, without true comprehension or critical thinking capabilities. It may struggle with abstract reasoning, creativity and handling complex ethical dilemmas that require nuanced judgement.

Artificial Intelligence Chat GPT 69

following ways:

› Leadership

› Recruiting

› Strategic Thinking

› Operations

› Marketing

› Content Creation

› Customer Service

› Sales

Bottomline, AI can offer huge opportunities for businesses to create new roles, such as hiring AI trainers to train an AI to do the sales calls, to be the customer service representative, to be the marketing copywriter, to produce the videos, and to write the scripts.

ChatGPT and News and Media:

ChatGPT could be used in the news and media industry to provide personalized news updates. Users could subscribe to a news bot powered by ChatGPT, which would analyze their reading history and provide news stories that are tailored to their interests. Additionally, ChatGPT could provide summaries of news stories and answer questions about current events. By providing personalized news updates, ChatGPT could improve user engagement and loyalty.

ChatGPT and Mental Health:

One potential application of ChatGPT is in the field of mental health. Conversational agents could provide support and guidance to individuals who are struggling with mental health issues, such as anxiety or depression. ChatGPT could be trained on a dataset of common mental health questions and responses, allowing it to provide personalized support to individuals in need. For example, ChatGPT could help individuals identify symptoms of mental illness and provide advice on how to manage their condition. Better yet, it could also provide resources for seeking professional help, such as referrals to psychiatrists, therapists or hotlines.

ChatGPT and Healthcare:

ChatGPT could also be used carefully in healthcare to provide personalized health advice. For example, a chatbot powered by ChatGPT could ask a user questions about their symptoms and provide advice on whether they should seek medical attention. And, ChatGPT could provide general information on healthy lifestyle choices, such as diet and exercise. By providing personalized health advice, ChatGPT could help individuals improve their health and well-being. However, NO chatbot can replace me, Dr. Karen Pendleton… No Ma’am!!!

It’s important to remember that while AI can assist in these tasks, it can’t replace human judgment, particularly in complex areas such as mental health and healthcare. A healthcare professional should always verify the output of AI systems.

I like, in the case of medical records, ChatGPT could be used to extract relevant medical information; summarize lengthy medical records; offer predictive analysis on health outcomes based on past medical records (patterns or correlations); assist with administrative tasks, i.e., coding for billing; and interface with electronic health records (EHRs).

In summary, ChatGPT has a wide range of potential applications in various fields. By leveraging the power of deep learning and natural language processing, ChatGPT can provide personalized and engaging experiences for users. As AI technology continues to evolve, we can expect to see more and more applications of ChatGPT and other conversational agents in our daily lives.

Where to start with Artificial Intelligence?

I would start with ChatGPT because it’s probably the most advanced of the forms of conversational AI, and can in effect, do the most. My advice to my reading audience is set aside an hour a week to just play with AI...just ask questions. The power comes in asking yourself, “Could I use AI to help me with this? How could I streamline this? How could I create efficiency with this?” There is a lot of play that has to happen right now to learn it. Believe me, you’ll go through that process where it feels inefficient at first because you don’t know what you’re doing. You may say to yourself, “I just wasted ten minutes talking to this ChatGPT, and it didn’t produce what I wanted.” Personally, I’m seeing myself and others, who are willing to play and have fun with it, and test things are getting farther because of the exploration and idea creativity.

Artificial Intelligence and ChatGPT offer significant advantages in terms of automation, decision-making, personalization, and customer support. However, challenges such as job displacement, ethical concerns, and the limitations of AI algorithms need to be addressed. While ChatGPT showcases impressive natural language processing abilities, it also has limitations regarding contextual understanding and critical thinking. Striking a balance between the benefits and drawbacks of AI is essential to harness its potential for the betterment of society while mitigating its risks.

In conclusion, we can’t ignore Artificial Intelligence / ChatGPT. The future is coming at us, one hundred miles per hour, and all we can do is lean in and embrace it, and use it to our advantage. So instead of being afraid, or maybe feeling this technology is too foreign or too weird for us, understand, AI can work within the various arenas of our lives. I believe within the next two years, we may be entering into the ‘golden age’ of this technology, where every company/business, and every person is using AI. Have the mindset of curiosity and excitement, for AI probably will be the biggest thing in our lifetime!

Inspiration Strikes A Flair for Fashion

Hi, I’m Elizabeth, and I am a rising senior at C.E. Byrd High School. In school, you can find me working as a member of the yearbook staff, organizing an upcoming service event as the President of Z Club, or working on a new collection for my Fashion Design class at the Career Center. Outside of school, you might find me at the YoungLife hanging with my middle school buddies as one of their Highschool WyldLife Leaders, working at Common Ground, or spending time with my friends, who I often capture through 35mm film or video. Most recently, I’ve taken it upon myself to initiate something new as an upcoming senior: to create and write a fashion and arts publication for my school.

Just like every teenage girl who dreams of city life, characters Carrie Bradshaw and Andie Anderson at Cosmopolitan from How to Lose A Guy in 10 Days have been an entryway into my fascination in fashion journalism, but here’s how inspiration struck.

A creative at heart, I have been fascinated by photography for as long as I can remember. Spending hours poring over my family’s old photographs and magazines, recreating magical scenes with my own cameras and in the spaces around me, it wasn’t long before I picked up the hobby. Surrounded by my dad’s old film cameras, I became particularly fascinated by film photography. There was something to film that I didn’t find in digital photography. Before snapping a shot, I was forced to consider my surroundings, light, composition, and depth, which allows for no deep observation of the world around me. The practice of shooting film is precise and delicate, each shot deliberate and intentional, as there is a limited amount of space. As I’ve grown to love the art of film photography, I rarely leave home without a camera.

My foray into fashion emerged from my initial fascination with photography when I spent a summer up in New York City studying Photography at Parsons School of Design. There,

72

as I watched the people around me dress with such elegance with what seemed to be little effort while still being completely themselves, my view of fashion completely changed. I learned that elegance, sophistication, and effortlessness in sense of style is key. Being in New York, there are ideas everywhere. The sidewalk is the canvas and NYC local street style provides all the inspiration I could ever need. When I finally returned home from the city, newfound ideas and inspirations were eating at my brain— and I was in dire need of artistic stimulation, so I started brainstorming.

I started with a Pinterest board and phone conversations with one of my best friends, Leann. I spent all of my junior year brainstorming something I could do to showcase this newfound passion for fashion and photography and this summer, she and I are finally making a step towards it! We are creating a student run, fashion/lifestyle publication called “Bogue” (Byrd Vogue). Here, my love for photography will meet my love for the art of style and all the in between. My vision for “Bogue” is to encourage students to have fun with fashion, and step out of their comfort zone, because it really does make all the difference when being at school. A place where fashion, along with all of the arts can be celebrated. Through an Instagram account, we will highlight Byrds most fashionable. We give updates on the latest fashion trends, and give an insight into what the students of Byrd are wearing. By working to compile profiles of Byrd’s best-dressed, sharing the places those students bought their clothing items, it will allow viewers to engage more deeply with the fashion world. Along with our Instagram account, we will publish a seasonal magazine that involves articles, interviews, student submissions, and all things fashion around the city. Students can submit anything from writing, visual arts, or photography to be featured in publications. We aim to highlight the art work, style and stories of Byrd students. In every way, “Bogue” is geared towards helping showcase student fashion and all the ways of being creative as well as sustainable.

Throughout my high school career, giving back has always been something I’m passionate about. I am a member of various service clubs around school, so it was no question that we use this platform to give back to our community. We plan to use the money made on selling the magazines and donate it to clothing shelters in our community. As we embark on this new and exciting journey of creativity, I hope to encourage the people around me to be inspired to use fashion as a way of individual expression in which students can take inspiration from the people around them. With that being said, there is more to “Bogue” than fashion. We hope to serve not only as a highlight on the latest fashion trends, and what Byrd students are wearing, but a hub for all creatives, advocating for sustainability, inspiration and creativity in fashion.

When she skipped her LSU class to join the Army, she never dreamed it would put her in the courtroom with Saddam Hussein, land her on national news or in California to host a reality show, or have her name show up as a Jeopardy answer. She describes her life now as slow-paced compared to what it used to be, but no less exciting. She’s been the Marketing Director at Metro Aviation for the past decade. Her and her husband, Michael, live in North Bossier with their daughters, Ella Grey and Lennon. While she is more focused on balancing motherhood and career, she still loves the occasional opportunity to say yes to the unknown.

Kristen King Holmes

You have had so much variety of life experiences from your time in the military, as a producer and reporter for KTBS 3, working for the Chamber of Commerce, and now working for a quickly growing local business with a global impact. You seem to have been great about figuring out what is important in life and keeping balance while also being a constant go-getter and driven professionally? What/who inspired you for a life like this?

From a young age, my mom and aunt (mom’s sister) embodied being hard workers and great moms and emphasized fun in everything we did. My mom never missed a school or athletic event but also worked full-time while raising three kids. I always felt important to them. They made everything fun, even mundane things like trips to the grocery store. They kept everyday things magical. They showed me that career

women could be great moms and have fun while doing it. I wanted that, too.

You have overcome disbelievers, barriers, societal norms many times. When told “you’re too smart, or your voice is too country” what gave/gives you the belief in yourself to prove them wrong?

If I had a penny for every time I’ve heard, ‘she’s really cute, but she’s also tough,’ I’d be retired. Society needs to replace the ‘but’ with ‘and’. Women can be both tough and cute, pretty and smart.

If someone tells me I can’t do something, I am stubborn enough to do everything I can to prove them wrong. I welcome the disbelievers because all it does is light a fire in me. Why shouldn’t I be able to do something? If it can be done, why not

Skipping class isn’t always recommended, but that one decision changed the trajectory of Kristen King Holmes’ life forever.

by me?

Women are so much stronger and more capable than some give us credit for. People focus on irrelevant and unimportant things like our appearance, size, or fashion. Our looks do not define our capabilities. As a mom of two daughters, I am intentional to not provide compliments only on their looks, clothes, or hair. Instead, I focus on their personalities, intelligence, creativity, and kindness. The things that really matter and make a person.

You were tasked with filming the first day of the Saddam trial as the only American female in the courtroom. What was that like? Were you scared?

Yes, I was scared. When I was first asked to do it, I said no. But then, I reconsidered, knowing that I’d regret it. It was nerve-racking. All other journalists were behind bulletproof glass; I was not. I was actually in the courtroom.

I was pretty anxious until Saddam walked into the room. When I saw he was nothing more than a frail old man and all his power had been stripped away, I relaxed. I remember thinking that someday my kids would read about this in a history book, and I could tell them I was there.

You mentioned you were an answer on Jeopardy during military week. What was the question and what was the correct answer?

What is the Green Zone.

Many times in your life story the seemingly small things had major impact on your career and life path. Events such as skipping class to talk to the Army recruiter or the ‘small story’ from the Stars and Stripes reporter changed the trajectory of your life. What advice do you have to help encourage others to take those small steps in the right direction and take chances that could set them up for success in the future?

Say Yes. Even when it feels uncomfortable, take chances. You have to overcome your fear of the unknown and say yes to things even when they seem scary or unpredictable. I met my husband on a blind date, and I’ll add that having someone support you is important when you’re doing something scary. Find people that will encourage you and remind you that you’re capable of so much. Your life never gets better, and doors do not open unless you are willing to walk through them.

People complain that Shreveport does not offer opportunities. They feel they need to move to a big town to do big things. You have clearly proven them wrong. How much of your story is pure luck vs grit/hustle/ knowing what you want and going after it?

You can make your own opportunity wherever you are. A lot of my story is about persistence and maybe some stubbornness. I knew what I wanted and went after it. You cannot sit around and wait for someone to call you to offer your dream job. Make it your dream job. We create our happiness, and we control our mindset. Don’t take the stepping-stone jobs for granted. Shine as bright as you can there and soak up everything you can so you’re ready when your next opportunity shows up.

You discuss finding balance. This is the modern daydream/ paradox, especially for women. How and where do you find this balance? What rules/boundaries do you set to help find balance?

I get my energy from being around people, but I also battle mom guilt. My first priority is pouring into my girls, and I do that by intentionally scheduling my days and weeks to allow time to just sit and enjoy them and fill up their cups. That alleviates some of the guilt I feel when I need to just get away and be me – that may mean going to book club or having dinner with friends, but my husband knows I need a handful of nights each month to just be Kristen. There’s never a perfect balance, and something will always outweigh the other. There are a lot of demands on us and a huge, invisible mental load. All we can do is our best and give ourselves some grace in the process.

You mentioned women do not say ‘no’ or speak up when they need help. I could not agree more. How did you learn this?

What advice do you have for others who struggle with this?

I think women are getting better at becoming more honest with each other, and I am on board. I’m a firm believer in surrounding yourself with people that support you and make you feel good. We often try to do too much and be everything to everyone. We can’t. This goes back to giving ourselves grace and surrounding ourselves with people that will step in and help us carry the load when it gets too heavy. It took me a long time to realize I am more of a “Pinterest Fail” mom than a super creative homeroom mom, and that’s okay. Because I have friends that can lend me their strengths and together, we’re all stronger.
