“If we all couldn’t laugh, we would all go insane”

As the seasons begin to change and the anticipated chill in the air approaches, this issue of Lola Magazines brings you all things fall and football. Throw an epic tailgate party at home with our Hostess with the Mostess. Our Fall Bucket List will keep you busy making memories with the ones you love and take a ride with the ladies from Minden on their yearly Witches Ride. We bring awareness to the hidden and heartbreaking risk of Amniotic Fluid Embolism as we honor the life and legacy of Molley Boone Cartwright. As always, we bring you health, beauty, and stories from women who inspire.

May this new season bring you unexpected laughter though any trials and tribulations you may face. Simply stated in the words of Jimmy Buffett, “If we all couldn’t laugh, we would all go insane.”. Never underestimate the healing power of a good laugh, for it is the antidote to “those days” that life can sometimes throw our way.

Cheers!

ome days feel like nothing goes our way, but then, life gives us laughter. I recently had one of those days. After watching my daughter cheer for a late high school football game, she and I were exhausted, hot, and hungry. There are not many options for dinner at 10pm on a Tuesday, then I remembered the old Subway gift card in my purse. Bingo! Subway it was. When we got there, the doors were locked and the “sandwich artist” motioned for us to drivethru. No worries, we got back in the car and pulled around. After waiting twenty minutes with no reply, I drove up to the window and lightly knocked. The sweet sandwich artist came to the window to take our order. Fifteen minutes later, “That will be $21.64, Ma’am”, I handed him my gift card and chatted with my girl about her day. A few more minutes went by, he returned to let me know my gift card would not go through. So, what would any normal mom do at this moment? Burst into tears, right? Ok, probably not, but that’s what I did. In full blown tears, I handed him my debit card. Bless his heart! Now, if any of you have ever experienced a good cry over something ridiculous, you feel me. A million little things from the day came to a head over a silly Subway sandwich. My daughter looked at me like a deer in the headlights, “Mom, are you ok? I don’t know if I should laugh at you or cry with you.”. I sobbed, but she could not keep from laughing. After wiping away my unsolicited tears, tears of laughter took their place. We could not catch our breath, laughing the whole way home. Even moms have their moments, and a good laugh was all I needed, making all the worries of the day slip away. In a world that can sometimes feel overwhelming, stressful, or even absurd, laughter becomes a lifeline—a means to keep us navigating the peaks and valleys. Like the changing of the seasons, laughter is the needed escape, offering a sense of renewal even on the days that challenge us.MARKETING & ADVERTISING DIRECTOR

Game Day with the GIRLS

HOSTESS with the MOSTESS

A football watch party is an exhilarating experience that transforms a casual gathering into a heart-pounding celebration of sportsmanship and camaraderie.

7. Hostess with the Mostess

As the anticipation builds and the game kicks off, the air is thick with energy, laughter, and friendly banter. Each goal, near-miss, and spectacular play becomes an electrifying moment shared with friends, magnifying the excitement tenfold. The collective cheers and groans of the crowd, the dramatic highs and lows, and the shared thrill of victory or the bittersweet taste of defeat all combine to create an atmosphere that’s truly electric.

Whether you’re a dedicated football aficionado or a casual observer, the energy of a football watch party is infectious, igniting a sense of belonging and unity as everyone comes together to witness the beautiful game in all its glory.

So, if you’re a football-loving hostess looking to organize a memorable gathering for your fellow female fans, you’re in for a treat. A girls’ football watching party is the perfect way to combine excitement and a dash of competition all in one. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps to throw an unforgettable event that celebrates both the game and the company of friends.

7

4 STEPS for throwing an unforgettable event

1)Pre-Party Preparations

Choose the Right Game: The first step is to choose an exciting match that will keep everyone engaged. It could be a championship game, a local derby, or a highly anticipated international clash. Research the upcoming schedule and select a game that’s likely to be a nail-biter.

Invitations: Send out creative invitations that capture the spirit of the event. Incorporate football-themed elements and use playful language to amp up the excitement. Whether it’s digital invites or traditional ones, make sure they set the tone for a fun-filled evening.

DIY Photo Booth: Set up a photo booth corner with props like team scarves, hats, and foam fingers. This is a fantastic way to capture memories and create shareable social media moments during the event.

3)Football Frenzy Activities

8. Hostess with The Mostess

Decorations: Deck out your space with football-inspired decorations. Balloons, banners, and tablecloths in the team colors will create a festive atmosphere. Set up a mini ‘stadium’ area with comfy seating and cushions to mimic the feel of a real match.

2)Game-Time Essentials

Dressing The Part: Be sure to show off your favorite team with festive attire, and encourage your friends to dress the party too!

Seating Arrangements: Arrange seating in a way that ensures everyone has a good view of the screen. Create a mix of floor cushions, bean bags, and couches to cater to different preferences. If space permits, consider having designated ‘fan zones’ for each team’s supporters.

Football Fare: Elevate classic game-day snacks by giving them a creative twist to please the ladies. Shrimp Pasta Salad, Buffalo Chicken Pinwheels, and my favorite party snack: Hummus. Incorporate football-themed desserts like cupcakes with edible goalposts or jersey-shaped cookies. Don’t forget a variety of beverages to keep everyone hydrated and refreshed.

Score Predictions: Before kick-off, have everyone predict the final score, the first goal scorer, or any other interesting game-related outcome. Offer a small prize for the guest who comes closest to the actual result.

Football Bingo: Create football-themed bingo cards with events like ‘player scores a goal’, ‘referee shows a yellow card’, or ‘crowd does the wave’. Guests can mark off the events as they happen during the match.

Halftime Entertainment: Plan a brief halftime activity to keep the energy high. You could have a quick trivia game about football history or play charades using famous player names and celebrations.

4)After Party

Thank You Notes: Send out personalized thank-you notes to your guests, recapping the highlights of the event and expressing your gratitude for their presence.

A girls’ football watching party is more than just watching a game – it’s an opportunity to celebrate friendship, camaraderie, and the joy of a shared passion. By following this guide, you’ll be well on your way to hosting a fun and memorable event that will have your guests eagerly waiting for the next game day gathering. So, get ready to score big with an unforgettable football season!

“This is my story, this is my song, praising my savior all the day long”. It was raining on Father’s Day as I stared at those words on the screen of my church. I stood there alone with tears in my eyes. A text earlier that morning from the girl’s mom said they weren’t going to church and I was deflated. But I felt Him push me to go to church anyway, even though I’d probably be the only dad there on Father’s Day without his kids.

“This is my story, this is my song, praising my savior all the day long”

This is my story. And it’s been this way for ten years. See, this is the side of divorce that people don’t talk much about. They don’t talk about holidays alone, special days spent without your family because of the schedule or because it’s only right to share. It’s hands down the hardest part of this world. Oddly it’s one I’m finding that people look to me for guidance within their own lives. Men routinely ask me how I’ve handled situations that they’re going through as newly single dads.

Sometimes it’s awkward for me because I struggle just like everyone else, but I always try to leave them with a positive vibe. Something they can feel good about.

But today, it was me that needed one of those positive talks and the

only place I knew to get that would be from my Heavenly Father. And when Blessed Assurance began to play and I read those words, I knew why He wanted me here. To understand that this IS my story, and this IS my song. To be a voice of positivity for not only for single dads but for anyone who needs some positive words and help navigating the troubled waters of a broken home.

When that song ended, I got the boost I needed. The preacher asked for the congregation to take a few minutes and go shake a hand. It seemed like every man there made their way past me, shaking my hand with an encouraging vibe.

What I’ve come to learn about a shared life with kids it’s this; even when things are hard, those babies still need you to be the positive and encouraging light in their lives. And as much as you want to wallow

in your pity always remember, you are not a victim. You are a winner who occasionally has a hard moment. Hard moments define who we are because they show us who we are deep inside.

You’re going to face hard times and times when things may not seem fair (and they actually may not be fair) but you cannot let the victim mentality dwell in your heart. That style of thinking will consume you and will lead you down a dark road. It’s also one that your kids do not need to see or be a part of in any way.

See guys, this is the part of divorce nobody likes to talk about. Your lawyer isn’t going to tell you this part. The dark part. The hard part.

A few years ago, a friend of mine popped off in the gym about how good my life as a single guy seemed and how freely I live. My

Don’t look at the bad; focus on the good.

response left him silent; “Another man see’s my daughters more than I do. That sound like a good life to you?”

I won’t lie, this morning when she told me the girls weren’t going to church, I was furious. I sent a pretty hot text behind it too. And Partner, she fired one right back. After God got in my heart, I saw her face to face, I apologized and so did she. Turns out she was having a not so good moment at the same time that same time. So we gave each other grace.

Later that day, we met at a local school because our youngest had just finished her color guard camp and the parents got to see what they’d learned. I finally climbed out of my pity party and was enjoying watching my girl show her newly learned skills. Several other girls were there too and so were some parents.

When it was over, I got my hugs, and we chatted a little. It was a good end to a semi-hard day, and I smiled. That’s when I noticed the school bus pulling into the parking lot. It was a Sunday and that struck me as odd, but I quickly realized why it was there.

I watched three young ladies laughing and smiling walk to the bus with their gear and climb aboard. That’s when I realized that these young ladies didn’t have anyone here cheering them on and encouraging them. Nobody came for them on their special day.

I sat in my truck a got a little choked up. I’m still trying to figure out if I got emotional for them or for me. I felt so ungrateful. I felt so much shame in my actions earlier in the day.

As I drove home, I realized that three teenagers, who’ll never ever know it, show me how to live. Don’t look at the bad; focus on the good.

That mentality right there makes life worth living and will leave a positive vibe on your kids.

The Myth Dyslaziaof

Neurodivergent learners are those who learn differently than others considered neurotypical. There are a lot of words and labels out there for learners of all different challenges and levels.

The term “neurodivergent” came from the closely related term “neurodiversity” coined by Judy Singer, an Australian sociologist, in 1998 to recognize that everyone’s brain develops

20

even those of identical twins — are exactly the same. Because of that, there’s no true definition of “normal” capabilities for the human brain. However, in the mainstream functional settings of education, many have been slow to adapt to the changing language and landscape, clinging instead to old norms and expectations without embracing the gifts of the neurodivergent contributions.

Neurodivergence is considered the range of differences in individual brain function and behavioral traits, regarded as part of normal variation in the human population. Learning struggles signified by labels such as autistic, dyslexic, inattentive and many others all fall under the umbrella term of neurodiversity. This is because in each of the learning challenges, the learner thinks atypically to the perceived educational norms and may need additional assistance for success in the classroom. Learners who have thought and processed differently have often been thought to be slow learners or even labeled as lazy. This is especially true for those attention issues or processing speed delays which impact many different learners.

As the author of Neuro-Diversed and a Board-Certified Cognitive Specialist, I have studied and explored a lot of terms associated with learning processes. Very commonly, students with learning challenges have given up on interventions and the learning process at a very early age due to frustration and mind shaming.

with boosting the skills needed through brain exercises and educational practice. By identifying the underlying weaknesses associated with the struggle and working to bring those into strengths or at least manageable skills, the learner has less tendency to give up and be perceived as being lazy. Additionally, when a neurodiverse student has a brain coach to assist them with pushing through the hard stuff, they learn to develop the grit needed to push through the challenges and to perceive them not as impossibilities but rather as things that can be learned with time and attention to deliberately approach them. There is an old saying that you can only eat an elephant by starting one bite at a time. I am not sure that I have ever had the desire to eat an elephant, nor do I ever plan to do so, but the point is that hard stuff can be conquered if approached in smaller increments so that it becomes more manageable.

21. Donesa

What is Growth Mindset? Growth Mindset is a term coined by Dr. Carol Dweck to indicate the mental approach to learning that looks for opportunities to learn rather than the fixed mental state. Fixed mentality means that one cannot learn new skills and is stuck with the cognitive cards they are dealt from life and genetics. Growth Mindset is an approach that believes in the YET! With a personal brain trainer encouraging the approach to learning as a fun and engaging experience, reading, math and other “hard” things become manageable and less threatening to the student.

What is the Myth of Dyslazia? It is untrue that those who struggle with learning issues are just lazy. The truth is that these learners most often are working at a much higher amount of struggle and tire more easily due to the incredible amount of brain power that is required to do the same thing that neurotypical students do such as reading, writing and mathematics. Dyslazia is not a diagnosis. It is a term coined by me to indicate that there is a fallacy in the term of laziness when associated with the “broken” meaning of DYS in diagnoses. Laziness is a term that indicates unwillingness to try or attempt and as such many struggling learners are often associated with this because they are exhausted with trying and being unsuccessful. In truth, a struggling learner often has worked so hard that the exhaustion makes them want to give up after hours of doing something that takes others only minutes to do such as homework and classwork, reading and math.

How does brain training help with this? Brain training uses the individualized approach to training such as a personal coach or trainer does for sports or workouts to partner

Where and how does one get a brain trainer or brain training? Brain training comes in many different ways. We are always training our brains but to be deliberate on approaching our weaknesses, we must first identify what is holding us back. If the things holding us back are in the academic or cognitive skills, the first place to start would be with an educational and cognitive skills assessment that can be had from a psychologist or at supplementary services such as LearningRx. With this assessment, the underlying weak skills can be identified, and a training plan put into place to address these skills by partnering with a personal brain trainer such as those at LearningRx. Additionally, if the person is struggling with behavior and needs behavior modifications or assistance, they may want to seek out a psychologist, counselor, or behavior specialist to address these skills by first identifying what is causing them, then working together to get these skills refined and improved. There are many options available in our area from counseling to play therapy to occupational therapy to behavior therapy, and into cognitive therapy, etc.

THE HOMEWORK DEBATE

itting with your child at the kitchen table, guiding them through homework has reduced many parents, along with their child, to tears. Homework, which has been a staple part of education for generations, often generates feelings of dread, misery and debate among educators, parents, and students alike. Educators have historically argued that it reinforces learning and discipline. Increasingly, many parents have begun to question its value, raising concern that it adds undue stress and infringes on a child’s free time. Most children would vote for the elimination of homework altogether. Reviewing the pros and cons of homework can help to shed light on the controversy and understand the role of homework in education.

The Pros and Cons of Homework CONS

PROS

1. OVERWHELMING WORKLOAD: One of the most common criticisms of homework is the potential for an overwhelming workload. Students often have multiple subjects with assignments due on the same day, leading to stress, exhaustion, and a reduced quality of work. Many children are tired by the end of the school day and staying up late into the night doing homework can negatively impact children and teens.

1. REINFORCEMENT OF LEARNING: The school day can be busy and there is a lot to cover. In addition, transitions such as lining up, recess, P.E. art, etc., while valuable, cut into academic skill development time. Homework can serve as a means of reinforcing what students have learned in class. We all need practice and repetition to master a new skill. Homework allows students to practice the skills and test their understanding of concepts introduced during lessons. This repetition can solidify understanding and aid in memory retention, helping students grasp complex subjects more effectively.

2. LIMITED FREE TIME: Homework can infringe on a child’s precious free time, leaving them with little opportunity for extracurricular activities, hobbies, and relaxation. It is important for kids to develop skills outside of school. Many students need sports, music, or art activities in order to thrive and support their wholistic development. Excessive homework can cause imbalance, which can contribute to burnout and hinder overall wellbeing.

26. LSUS

2. EXTENDED LEARNING: Every teacher will tell you sometimes there just is not enough time in the school day to cover everything adequately. Homework can allow children to work at a slower pace until mastery of a topic is accomplished. In addition, homework can extend learning beyond the classroom, encouraging students to explore topics of interest or research questions they may have. This self-directed exploration fosters curiosity and a deeper understanding of the subject matter.

3. TESTING ONESELF: Before the actual quiz or exam, students can test their own knowledge of a subject by completing independent homework. Students have the opportunity to ask the teacher for additional help or clarification if they have any trouble. For this reason, homework is often assigned ‘completion’ points rather than grade points.

Content

3. FAMILY TIME DISRUPTION: Every parent who has spent hours at the kitchen table nagging, cajoling, and pushing their child to complete homework knows what a stressor homework can be. Tired parents often don’t want to begin their second shift after coming home from work and supervising homework. Positive family interactions and quality time are vital for a child’s emotional and social development and excessive homework can detract from this.

4. RESPONSIBILITY DEVELOPMENT: Keeping up with and completing homework assignments teaches students about time management, accountability, and discipline. Such skills are critical for independent learning, which is emphasized in college. Beyond school, such skills help students prepare for future responsibilities such as in the workplace.

5. INVOLVEMENT OF PARENTS: Homework is one way parents can be involved in their child’s education. By doing homework together, parents can see what their children are expected to learn and notice any difficulties their child may be having. Regular parent-teacher communication can strengthen a child’s learning. Spending time with your child in a supportive manner can also promote the parent-child bond and send a message that learning is valued. Children who have parents involved in their education tend to do better.

4. INEQUITY AND DISPARITIES: Every parent who has had to drive to the store late at night for poster board or a pumpkin that their child “has to have for tomorrow” knows that homework can sometimes cost more than just time. Purchasing supplies for the Myian temple that required 100 popsicle sticks and a pound of glue adds up. Homework can exacerbate educational inequalities. Students with access to resources, quiet study spaces, and parental assistance may have an advantage over those who lack such resources. This can perpetuate disparities in academic performance.

5. LACK OF ENGAGEMENT: No one likes ‘busy work’. When homework becomes monotonous or too repetitive, it can lead to disengagement from learning. Assignments that are not meaningful or relevant can diminish a student’s enthusiasm for education.

26

SOLUTIONS: Finding a Balance

Striking

potential drawbacks

1 | Quality Over Quantity

Instead of overwhelming students with numerous assignments, educators can focus on providing high-quality homework that reinforces key concepts and encourages critical thinking. The goal should be to reduce mundane repetition and focus on reviewing key concepts.

2 | Individualization

Recognizing that students have varying learning styles and capacities, educators can tailor homework assignments to suit individual needs. This approach ensures that tasks are both challenging and achievable. For example, students with disabilities or learning differences, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) should have assignments shortened or reduced.

3 | Time Management

strategies

27. LSUS Content

Homework continues to be a fact of life for most children. While it can have its drawbacks, homework plays a role in the education of children and teens. Striking a balance between too much and too limit is always the goal; like the ancient Greek Philosophers said, “Everything in Moderation”. More is not better when it comes to homework. By focusing on quality, individualization, active learning strategies and clear communication, educators and parents can ensure that homework contributes positively to a child’s educational journey.

If you or your child’s teacher have any concern regarding their development or the possible presence of learning difficulties, feel free to contact LSU Health Shreveport Children’s Center (318) 813-2960. The Children’s Center provides a variety of assessments for children who may be struggling in school.

Similar to knowing the purpose, kids and parents should know realistically how long homework should take. A general rule of thumb is ‘ten minutes per each grade’ which the National PTA and National Education Association support. This means a 1st grader should have roughly ten minutes of homework while a 6th grader would have an hour. Teaching students time management skills can help them handle homework effectively without sacrificing their free time. If you feel your child is spending too much time on homework each night, you should communicate this concern to the teacher. Parents and teachers can provide guidance on planning, prioritizing, and breaking down tasks into manageable steps.

4 | Vary Assessment Methods

Educators can explore alternative ways to assess student understanding, such as projects, presentations, and group discussions. Rather than writing a book report, kids could create a diorama depicting key themes in the story. These methods can reduce the reliance on traditional homework while promoting active learning. Active learning is an approach to teaching that involves actively engaging students with the course material, such as through discussions, presentations, etc. Active learning has been shown to be superior to traditional learning and reduces frustration, burnout and fatigue for the students.

5 | Open Dialogue

Schools should foster open communication between educators, parents, and students regarding homework policies. Regular discussions can help identify issues and collaboratively find solutions. If a student is having trouble completing homework, a home-school notebook could be helpful. The child writes down the homework assignment in the notebook and packs any necessary materials into their bookbag. The teacher then initials the notebook to indicate the assignment has been sent home. Once the child completes the homework and re-packs materials into the book bag, the parent initials in the notebook to indicate that the assignment was complete.

the right balance between homework’s benefits and
is crucial for creating an effective and healthy educational environment.

The Must-See Destination this Fall!

IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR IDEAS FOR A FALL ADVENTURE THAT DOESN’T FEEL DONE TO DEATH, PUT CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE , ON YOUR LIST OF PLACES TO CHECK OUT. WHETHER YOU’RE SEEKING THE PERFECT SPOT FOR A GIRL’S TRIP OR A FAMILY VACATION DESTINATION THAT WILL PLEASE EVERYBODY, NASHVILLE’S LESSER-KNOWN NEIGHBOR HAS MUCH TO OFFER.

30.
30

Chattanooga is 489 miles from New Orleans and 589 miles from Shreveport. Driving to Chattanooga from Louisiana will take six to 10 hours, depending on where you start. This might be an acceptable drive time for a weeklong vacation, but flying may be easier for a shorter stay. The less-than-good news is that there aren’t presently any direct flights from Louisiana’s airports to Chattanooga. If a multi-city Tennessee trip appeals to you, Southwest Airlines currently has direct service from New Orleans to Nashville, 130 miles from Chattanooga. Otherwise, you’re looking at a connecting flight. The better news is that once you get to Chattanooga, you’ll have nearly endless options for things to do.

31

A Building, Not a Train

Mention Chattanooga, and your mind probably goes right to “Chattanooga Choo Choo.” Although Chattanooga’s railroad history will likely play a part in your exploration of the city, the iconic Chattanooga Choo Choo isn’t a train but a building, and a don’t-miss one at that. The Choo Choo opened in 1909 as a train station and closed in 1970. Local investors bought the property and reopened the space in 1973 as a hotel and vacation complex.

Today’s Choo Choo combines the old train stations’ architectural charm with fun, modern hangouts, such as the restaurant STIR, American Draft, where you can pour a beer inside a vintage train car, and more.

The Best City Break

If mention of rooftop bars, a scenic river walk, restaurants everywhere you look, and unique local shopping has you raising your hand and saying, “Sign me up!” you’ll enjoy exploring downtown Chattanooga.

If you stay in one of the downtown hotels, such as the Read House Hotel or the Hotel Clemons, formerly the Bode Hotel, downtown Chattanooga is very walkable. When you’re done getting your steps in, take one of the free electric streetcars or grab a bike from the citywide bike rental program. If you plan to visit Lookout Mountain, you’ll need a car.

32

Find Adventure at Lookout Mountain

Lookout Mountain isn’t technically in Tennessee but in Georgia. It sits right on the Tennessee state line, just a few minutes from downtown Chattanooga.

Lookout Mountain is fun any time of year, but Mother Nature puts on quite the show during fall, with eyeeye-popping views of the valley and mountains blanketed in vivid autumn colors. Southeast weather is always unpredictable, but Chattanooga fall temperatures typically range from mid70s to high 40s, perfect for outdoor activities. Make sure to dress in layers.

Take in breathtaking rock formations, a 140-foot cascading waterfall, and a viewing deck where you can see seven states on a clear day at Rock City Garden. Then, ride on the Lookout Mountain Incline Railway, the world’s steepest passenger railway. The ride to the top takes about 10 minutes, and you’ll see spectacular panoramic views of the valley from the train’s roof. Don’t lose your train ticket – you’ll need it for the ride down.

33.

At the top, walk to Point Park, part of the Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park, and enjoy views of Chattanooga from above. Check out the Bluff or Sunset Rock Trails on Lookout Mountain if you want more of a workout.

Another don’t-miss activity on Lookout Mountain is Ruby Falls, America’s deepest commercial cave and tallest underground waterfall open for public view. The highlight of the guided tour, which lasts about an hour, is a 145-foot waterfall 1,120 feet beneath

the mountain. Ruby Falls also offers zip lining for anyone seeking something more adrenaline-charged.

Chattanooga’s Haunted History

If your idea of a fall trip includes a bit of spooky flavor, Chattanooga won’t disappoint. Take your walking shoes and sign up for a tour with Chattanooga Ghost Tours. This 1.5-hour walking tour takes you around the city after dark and is led by a guide well-versed in local ghost stories. The deluxe tour option is

33

a smaller-sized group, takes you inside at least one haunted location, and offers a refreshment break.

If you want to rub elbows with Chattanooga’s most notorious ghost, stay at the Read House Hotel, where Annalisa Neverly was beheaded in the bathtub of Room 311. The culprit was never found but is widely believed to have been a jealous lover. Room 311 is available to rent on Friday nights in October and on Halloween nights. The hotel uses a lottery system to determine who gets to stay in this room, where multiple paranormal occurrences have been reported.

Room 311 has been resorted to its 1927 condition and sits empty most of the year, supposedly to give Annalisa some peace. The staff at the Read House Hotel will give a brief tour of the room upon request. You don’t have to be a guest at the hotel to take the tour, although aside from the creepy vibe in this one room, it’s an excellent hotel, and I recommend it.

Adults-Only Fun

In addition to a great cocktail and craft beer scene, Chattanooga has a train ride dedicated to wine pairings! The Chattanooga Wine Train is a two-hour dining excursion available on select dates and includes a three-course dinner with specially selected wines from sommelier John McCune.

Kid-Friendly Must-Do’s

In addition to the activities at Lookout Mountain, the Tennessee Aquarium is fantastic. Housed in two separate buildings, the aquarium offers both a River Journey and an Ocean Journey. You’ll see everything from sharks and stingrays to alligators and adorable river otters.

Train enthusiasts can ride a restored vintage train at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum. Need to burn off energy? Head to Coolidge Park and check out the splash pad, carousel, and a huge lawn to run and play on.

VARICOSE & SPIDER VEINS

COSMETIC CONCERN OR HEALTH CONCERN?

At times the answer is both! Sometimes it can be difficult to tell whether the discomfort in your legs is just one of those common aches or pains resulting from a busy day, or whether it is indicative of a larger problem that requires medical care. Venous disease is a common medical problem affecting women and men of all ages. One of the biggest myths about varicose and spider veins is that treating them is only done for cosmetic reasons. The truth is that these veins are often a sign of a medical condition that can lead to serious health effects. The main symptoms of venous disease in the lower extremities are aching, heaviness, tightness, fatigue, throbbing, swelling, itching or burning in the legs. If left untreated, venous disease may lead to leg edema, skin discoloration (venous stasis dermatitis) or ulcers in the legs.

Not only can varicose and spider veins be the cause for leg pain and discomfort but they may also cause embarrassment. We have many patients that no longer wear shorts and suffer through the heat of the Louisiana summers due to the appearance of their legs. They are generally very pleased with their results after treatment and feel confident to show their legs again!

Veins in the legs oppose gravity and flow in an upward direction to return blood to the heart. When the valves within the veins fail to close or work properly, blood pools and stretches the veins causing ropelike, twisted blood vessels resulting in the formation of spider and varicose veins. Spider veins are small clusters of red, blue or purple veins near the surface

of the skin. Varicose veins are enlarged, swollen, dilated and often uncomfortable veins. Both are signs of weak and inefficient veins impeding circulation.

The largest risk factor for venous disease is genetics. More than 70 percent of patients with varicose veins have a relative with varicose veins. Look at the legs of your parents and grandparents to foresee the possible future of your leg health! Seek early prevention and treatment if you do notice the appearance of these veins. A person’s profession plays a role in venous disease as well. Those who stand for long hours such as hairdressers, healthcare workers, cashiers and teachers are at risk as well as those sitting stationary for prolonged periods of time. Additionally, women are twice as likely to have venous disease than men. Obesity, pregnancies, and aging also increase the risk for varicose and spider veins.

The best type of treatment for your veins depends on the severity of your condition. It is important to consult with a board-certified vascular surgeon to evaluate, ultrasound if necessary, and discuss individualized treatment options. Treatment options have come a long way and most patients resume normal activities the same day of the procedures. Spider veins may be treated with a series of sclerotherapy or laser treatments in a medical office and usually takes less than an hour per visit. During sclerotherapy a medication is injected into the vein resulting in vein closure and thereafter

37

BEFORE AFTER

the appearance of the vein fades or disappears completely with time. This results in better blood flow through the remaining healthy veins. Sclerotherapy is the gold standard treatment for spider veins and is also preferred by most vein specialists over laser because spider veins often have underlying feeder veins that can easily be treated with sclerotherapy but are not addressed by laser. From a patient perspective, sclerotherapy is less painful and more easily tolerated.

TIPS TIPS

to prevent varicose or spider veins or strengthen the veins

✔ ELEVATE: Elevating your legs at a level above the hips for at least 15 minutes every day gives your veins a break from their uphill work against gravity and allows the extra blood in your legs to drain back towards the heart.

✔ FLEX THE CALVES: If sitting or standing for extended periods of time, take a break to walk around to pump the muscles in your legs. Toe raises are also effective.

38. Vein Therapy

✔ EXERCISE REGULARLY: Exercising daily keeps the blood flowing properly. Thirty minutes a day of brisk walking, swimming, or bike riding is beneficial.

Board-certified vascular surgeons offer minimally invasive techniques requiring little to no downtime to treat bulging varicose veins. Care is taken to plan individualized treatments ranging from Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) utilizing heat to close down the vein, VenaSeal which uses an innovative medical-grade super glue to seal the damaged vein, or Micro-phlebectomies in which the veins are removed from the leg. Consequently, symptoms improve and the blood circulation is restored.

Would you paint over water damage in your home without fixing the leak first? It is important to evaluate for “leaky valves” in veins prior to treating veins for cosmetic or medical purposes which is why we encourage visiting a vascular surgeon at a dedicated vein center for your vein care. With proper evaluation and treatment, the progressive symptoms of venous disease can be stopped. You do not have to suffer with painful, aching or unsightly veins. Fall and winter are the perfect seasons to have varicose and spider veins treated.

Nancy Pipkin, PA-C is a Physician Assistant specializing in vascular and vein care for over 10 years at Highland Clinic Vein Center. All procedures are performed by or under the supervision of Dr. Stephen White, MD, FACS, RPVI. Dr. White is a fellowship trained and board-certified vascular surgeon.

✔ MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT: Stay hydrated with at least half a gallon of water a day and eat well balanced nutrient dense foods.

✔ COMPRESSION: Graduated compression socks, tights and hose worn daily apply pressure to the lower legs, helping to maintain blood flow upwards from the legs to the heart. This prevents the occurrence or further progression of venous disease. Compression is especially important during pregnancy.

✔ SEEK TREATMENT: At the first sign of a vein problem, consult with a vein specialist to avoid later struggling and suffering with issues that can be remedied.

Art Of War

Heartbreak, a universal human experience, knows no boundaries and touches every gender, age, and background. Yet, the journey of women overcoming heartbreak is particularly inspiring, showcasing their remarkable strength, resilience, and ability to rebuild their lives. In the face of adversity, women have demonstrated time and again that they possess the power to heal, grow, and thrive, emerging as beacons of hope and inspiration for all. This all sounds good and means a lot when you are reading it but let me just say life is hard, it hurts, and many times there are more disappointments than celebrations.

Even though people think I have it all together, let me let you in on a little secret. I AM A MESS!

I feel lonely, vulnerable, broken, and exhausted some days. Like I am in the fight for life but losing the battle. Now please understand not because I am not successful, hardworking, and grateful for my accomplishments. Nothing about me says weak, timid, or fragile, yet I stand strong on my two feet, fist up, shoulders square and show up every day for the next war. Ladies I’m just tired. Tired of trusting people and giving the benefit of the doubt to those who deserve nothing but questions and background checks, tired of dating men who forgot that monogamy means one not many, and tired of employing people who think I work for them and they show up as a favor to me. Today I say no more, not today, for family, friends, employees, or anyone else who refuses to show up for me and fight with me to win.

herapy, life coaches, pastors, and many people and tools have helped me in many ways. I need every single one just to keep it together, keep going, and move on to the next journey and challenge of my life. Here are a few tips, tricks, and nuggets I have learned along the way.

1. Embracing the Emotions

The path to healing begins with acknowledging and embracing the torrent of emotions that accompany heartbreak. Women have a unique capacity to dive deep into their feelings, allowing themselves to grieve and process. Rather than suppressing their emotions, they choose to confront them

head-on, recognizing that this vulnerability is the first step toward rebuilding their lives.

2. Rediscovering Self Worth

Heartbreak often leaves individuals questioning their selfworth and value. For women, the journey of self-discovery post-heartbreak becomes a transformative experience. They embark on a quest to redefine their self-concept, recognizing that their value doesn’t hinge on external validation. Through introspection, they rediscover their strengths, passions, and dreams, forging a stronger sense of self-worth than ever before.

3. Cultivating Resilience

46

Resilience is a woman’s innate superpower.

The ability to bounce back from adversity and emerge even stronger is a testament to their inner strength. Women who overcome heartbreak harness this resilience, converting pain into fuel for growth. They build a shield of emotional strength that guards them against future heartaches and equips them to tackle life’s challenges with unwavering determination.

4. Sisterhood Bonds that Heal

The sisterhood formed among women is an incredible source of support and healing. During times of heartbreak, women lean on their friends, family, and communities for solace. The stories of women helping other women mend their broken hearts showcase the immense power of empathy, understanding, and shared experiences. Through these bonds, they learn that they are never alone in their struggles.

5. Pursuing Passion and Purpose

Heartbreak propels women to reassess their life’s trajectory, often leading to the discovery of new passions and purposes. The pursuit of personal goals becomes a healing balm, providing them with a sense of direction and fulfillment. Many women channel their energy into creative endeavors, professional achievements, or philanthropic ventures, using their pain as a catalyst for positive change.

6. Embracing Transformation

Heartbreak marks a turning point where women shed their old selves and step into a new chapter of their lives. The process of transformation is empowering, as they discard the

limitations and doubts that once held them back. This metamorphosis allows them to rewrite their stories and envision futures filled with joy, love, and endless possibilities.

The journey of women overcoming heartbreak is nothing short of extraordinary. Their ability to rise above pain, reinvent themselves, and find newfound purpose inspires all, regardless of gender. In embracing their emotions, rediscovering their self-worth, cultivating resilience, nurturing sisterhood, pursuing passions, and embracing transformation, these women exemplify the triumph of the human spirit. As they heal and rebuild, they become beacons of hope, guiding others on their own journeys to healing and happiness.

Strong women break, they cry, and they fall but the strongest mend the wounds, wipe away the tears, and get up and move even faster the next time. It is not the wins that always make us great warriors but the battles we survive that show us what we are made of. Don’t ever stop showing up to fight for yourself.

Sleep Well, Live Well…

The Link Between Healthy Mattresses and Overall Health

Do you enjoy the pleasant aroma of a brand-new car?

Well, imagine having that exact same scent lingering on your mattress. It's a peculiar thought, isn't it? Why would a mattress emit any fragrance, let alone one reminiscent of a vehicle?

The truth is rather unsettling. Traditional mattresses are actually packed with a variety of undesirable substances, including hazardous chemicals that gradually break down and release airborne toxins. So, that distinctive “ new bed smell” you encounter is essentially the same odor emanating from the upholstery of your recently purchased car. Both your mattress and your automobile, items you interact with on a daily basis, are silently dispersing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the surrounding air. VOCs pose a threat to both your well-being and the health of our planet Earth. Moreover, it’s worth noting that your mattress could be off-

gassing without emitting any discernible scent. Not all VOCs are detectable by smell, which can be rather concerning. Nevertheless, there’s no need to fret. I’m here to can help you vet your mattress for VOCs. It all started as my partner, Dr. Jack Ward and I have always been keenly aware of the importance of sleep. In fact one of our 10 Tenets of Optimal Health is Sleep Fitness. And, I wrote an article in the 03/08/2020 issue of LOLA Magazine entitled: “Your Guide to Sleep Fitness”

https://readlola.com/2020/03/your-guide-tosleep-fitness/

Recently, I have been in the market for a new mattress. More on that latter in this article.

51

OFF-GASSING SOURCES

It is crucial to recognize that off-gassing products can be found in various items in your home, not just your mattress or car. This is because many products nowadays are manufactured with chemical additives and synthetic materials.

In addition to mattresses, there are several common sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in residential settings. These include:

• Paint

• Carpets and flooring

• Upholstered furniture

• Cleaning products

Conventional mattresses, which are nonorganic, typically release VOCs through various components such as petroleum-based foams (such as memory foam), cooling gels, chemical flame retardants, and the substantial amounts of industrial glue used to assemble the mattress.

HOW VOCS HARM People and Planet Earth

Breathing in toxic chemicals is obviously harmful to your health. It's common knowledge that exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can lead to mild symptoms like headaches, nausea, and dizziness. Furthermore, VOC exposure can exacerbate respiratory conditions such as asthma.

However, the consequences of long-term exposure to specific VOCs are much more severe. Prolonged exposure to these compounds can result in serious health issues including liver problems, kidney damage, nervous system disorders, and even cancer.

Not only do VOCs pose risks to human health, but they also have detrimental effects on our planet. The release of off-gassing chemicals can cause various forms of environmental damage, such as plant diseases that reduce seed production. Additionally, certain VOCs act as greenhouse gases, contributing to global warming. Moreover, when VOCs combine with water, they can cause acid rain, which destroys ecosystems.

GOLDEN ADVICE to Avoid a Mattress That Off-Gasses VOCs

When purchasing a mattress, there are several important factors to consider. One crucial aspect is avoiding mattress off-gassing, which can be achieved by selecting an organic mattress brand. An authentic organic mattress, certified as organic, is manufactured without the use of off-gassing materials. These certified organic mattresses are made from natural and environmentally friendly materials.

To ensure the organic integrity of a mattress during your shopping process, it's advisable to look for specific certifications. These certifications include:

Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS): MADE SAFE®:

This certification guarantees organic integrity and prohibits the use of off-gassing materials like formaldehyde, plasticizers, polyfluorinated compounds, and others.

This certification confirms that the mattress is non-toxic, having passed the comprehensive MADE SAFE banned list that encompasses over 6,500 substances.

This certification specifically evaluates mattresses for low chemical emissions.

To further avoid off-gassing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in your mattress, it is also helpful to check the label. Pay attention to whether the mattress contains petroleumbased chemicals, foams, synthetic fabrics, or flame retardants, as these materials can contribute to off-gassing.

Slumber Symphony: Unveiling the Profound Influence of Sleep, Our 1/3 Life Companion

Did you know that you spend approximately one-third of your life on your mattress? Sleep is an essential human function, so it's crucial to carefully consider whether your mattress supports or hampers your sleep quality. Opting for a certified organic mattress can offer numerous benefits and actually enhance your sleep experience, including providing exceptional comfort. If you tend to sleep hot, an organic mattress can be particularly advantageous in addressing this issue.

A good night's sleep is vital for our overall health and well-being, and a significant factor that contributes to quality sleep is the mattress we choose. With a myriad of options available in the market, it's crucial to understand the qualities of a healthy mattress that can support our bodies, promote restful sleep, and alleviate common sleep-related issues. In this article, I want to also explore the key qualities to look for when selecting a mattress, ensuring you make an informed decision and reap the benefits of a rejuvenating slumber.

Support and Comfort

One of the primary qualities to consider when choosing a healthy mattress is the level of support and comfort it provides. A mattress should offer adequate support to maintain proper spinal alignment, especially in the areas of the neck, shoulders, hips, and lower back. Look for a mattress that adapts to your body shape, distributes pressure evenly, and minimizes the risk of developing aches and pains.

leading to a more restful sleep experience.

It's a good idea to research each brand, read customer reviews, and consider factors such as your preferred sleeping position and any specific comfort needs you may have before making a decision.

Durability and Longevity

Investing in a healthy mattress is a long-term commitment, so durability and longevity are essential factors to consider. A high-quality mattress should be built to withstand regular use and maintain its structural integrity over time. Look for mattresses made from durable materials, ideally certified latex, or pocketed coils, which offer excellent resilience and are less prone to sagging or developing indentations.

Additionally, consider the warranty offered by the manufacturer. A reliable warranty demonstrates the manufacturer's confidence in the product's longevity and provides you with peace of mind, ensuring that you can enjoy your mattress for years to come.

Temperature Regulation

53. Dr Karen

Maintaining an optimal sleep temperature is crucial for a good night's rest. A healthy mattress should facilitate airflow and heat dissipation, preventing the buildup of excess heat or cold spots that can disrupt sleep. Look for mattresses that incorporate breathable materials, such as natural fibers like organic cotton or organic wool, as they can help regulate temperature and promote better sleep hygiene.

Furthermore, comfort is subjective and varies from person to person. While some prefer a plush and soft surface, others may find a firmer feel more suitable.

Opt for a mattress that strikes the right balance for your personal comfort preferences, ensuring you can relax and unwind,

In recent years, many mattresses also come with advanced cooling technologies, such as gel-infused foams or phase-change materials. Beware of gimmicks…just saying. Remember to remain mindful of toxic materials. These features report active heat dissipation, thus keeping you cool and comfortable throughout the night, especially if you tend to sleep hot.

Motion Isolation

If you share your bed with a partner or pet, motion isolation becomes an important consideration. A mattress with excellent motion isolation minimizes the transfer of movement across the surface, allowing you and your partner to enjoy uninterrupted sleep, regardless of tossing, turning, or getting in and out of bed. As reported the memory foam mattresses or hybrid mattresses with individually wrapped coils are often praised for their superior motion isolation properties. Again, keep in mind those composed of toxic materials.

Allergen Resistance and Hypoallergenic Features

For individuals with allergies or sensitivities, it's essential to choose a mattress that resists allergens and promotes a healthier sleep environment. Look for mattresses with hypoallergenic properties, such as those made from organic materials.

PEARLS OF PURPOSE TO HOST INAUGURAL

WITCHES RIDE

OF MINDEN

The newly formed, all ladies group, Pearls of Purpose, is bringing a Witches Ride to Minden! Pearls of Purpose is a 501(c)3, non-profit organization that was formed with the intention to bring family friendly events to areas all across north Louisiana. All events will benefit a local community endeavor and charity. The Pearls of Purpose mission is to connect women from surrounding communities, build camaraderie, support charitable and community endeavors all while exhibiting a joie de vivre perspective. Pearls of Purpose founders, Sarah Watson Overall of Minden, and Amber Ryals Bryant of Ruston are the ultimate event and party planners with servant hearts, and alongside the Pearls of Purpose board members, this organization has lots of future community events in the works!

56

A LITTLE HISTORY ABOUT THE WITCHES RIDE:

The Witches Ride was started over 30 years ago in Seaside, FL, and has taken fire across the southeast. Several neighboring towns currently host similar rides and our group decided Minden was in need of this type of community event. Think of a whimsical bike ride with ladies from all across north Louisiana dressed in their spookiest and most festive garb, all while benefiting the community and local charities.

The Witches Ride will take place on Thursday, Oct. 19, in downtown Minden, with a block party immediately following.

The ride is a women’s only event for ages 18+ and we encourage spouses, kids, etc. to participate as parade watchers as well as join in on the festivities at the block party. The block party will include complimentary bites, cash bar, music, a kid’s area and a screening of Hocus Pocus. Our goal is to have 300+ participants for the ride portion of the event. Tickets are $45 for the ride + block party and $10 for non-riders to attend the block party. Kids entry into the block party is free. Monies raised will go towards a community park called Miller Quarters (also the location of the ride’s start, finish and block party) and a non-profit organization called We’re Here, We Care. We will work closely with this organization and its founder, Patrick White, during the holidays and donate bicycles for children at Christmas.

“ Melody Wheeler our night nanny for the twins proved to be invaluable. With expertise on sleep training and a comprehensive understanding of infant care her presence was a true blessing. Along with her skills of infant care was her gentleness with the babies and our family. She fit in perfectly with us. Melody was quickly “family” and our girls still love their “Mel Mel. ”

As first time parents, my husband and I needed lots of guidance on how to take care of our new born baby. We heard about Ms. Melody through family and friends, and she was a gift from up above! She had great recommendations of the things we needed, what to expect, and helped our little one to be on a good, solid schedule. Not only is she knowledgeable, but she genuinely cares and will listen to all of your questions and concerns about parenthood. I highly recommend her to help anyone who’s starting a family! ”

Connection BETWEEN Squinting and Wrinkles?

In today’s beauty-conscious age, many of us are seeking solutions to combat the early signs of aging, particularly when it comes to the fine lines and wrinkles that grace our facial canvases. For those aged 21-45, the area around the eyes often becomes the prime area of concern. While natural aging remains an undeniable factor, squinting is another sneaky culprit contributing to the formation of wrinkles around the eyes.

Squinting often becomes a habitual response for those struggling with imperfect vision. The seemingly harmless act of narrowing the eyes to focus on distant or unclear objects can, over time, create those familiar fine lines we often dub “crow’s feet.”

in the delicate eye area over time. Contact lenses, eyeglasses, and LASIK are excellent choices for rectifying your vision and preventing squinting.

Regardless of the method you opt for to correct your vision, the primary goal is to minimize squinting as much as possible. With corrected vision, the habitual need to squint diminishes drastically. Fewer squinting means fewer repetitive muscle contractions, which can delay the onset of crow’s feet over time or at least reduce their severity.

Vision and Wrinkles

Each time we squint, the small muscles around our eyes contract. When this action is repeated countless times, day in and day out, it causes the skin to fold. Over time, as the skin begins to lose its elasticity due to aging, sun exposure, and other environmental stressors, these temporary folds become more profound and permanent.

What Can You Do To Slow Down the Aging Process?

Regular eye check-ups and ensuring one has the correct visual prescription are vital for optimal vision and maintaining youthful skin around the eyes. When an individual has an incorrect prescription or doesn’t use the eyewear they need, they tend to squint more often to bring distant or near objects into focus. Over time, this repeated squinting can lead to the development of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes. By simply ensuring that one’s vision is accurately corrected, this habitual squinting can be minimized, potentially leading to fewer wrinkles

For those aged 21-45, the dual advantages of clear vision and potentially delaying wrinkle development are paramount. Securing sharp, crisp vision and preserving a youthful look for an extended period can be instrumental in minimizing the onset of fine lines and wrinkles for as long as possible. To truly make the most out of this potential anti-aging advantage, we recommend you seek out an eye care professional earlier rather than later. The fewer years spent squinting, the better the odds of keeping crow’s feet and fine lines at bay.

At WK Eye Institute, our expertise lies in top-notch eye care, encompassing contact lens fittings, glasses, and LASIK procedures. We’re dedicated to offering sharp, clear-vision solutions. Our team of committed professionals stands ready to walk you through the journey, guaranteeing the utmost superior eye care. sister, Molley, was the friend you never knew you needed until she was part of your life and you quickly realized she was everything you ever needed in a friend. She was trustworthy, uplifting, honest, easy going, joyful, giving, fun, soft spirited, selfless, and so much more. She exuded the characteristics of a Godly woman, a testament to the lives she touched, a witness to the remarkable spirit she shared with everyone lucky enough to know her. Molley’s impact extended further than even she could fathom; she was a bright light in this world to so many that were hurting or just needed a kind ear to listen.

Not only was Molley beautiful both inside and out, she was also well-educated and hard working. Molley’s journey, one that began in Ruston and led her to Baton Rouge, was marked by her commitment to education and personal growth. Graduating from Parkview Baptist School in 2004 and later achieving a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Care Administration from Our Lady of the Lake College in 2009, Molley’s professional prowess was evident in her role as a decision support analyst at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. Her accomplishments, however, were not confined to her professional endeavors; they were an extension of her compassionate nature. Molley’s identity transcended mere career titles: she was a dutiful daughter, a devoted sister, a loyal friend, and a loving wife.

One of Molley’s most anticipated joys was the prospect of becoming a mother—a role for which she was meticulously prepared. As February 19, 2018, approached, Molley’s pregnancy journey reached its pinnacle at 41 weeks. Anticipation was tangible as she, exhausted yet excited, eagerly awaited the arrival of her baby boy. After just celebrating my little girl’s first birthday, I headed down to Baton Rouge to be with my sister. Being a few days past her due date, she hoped

to go into labor soon. Molley and I shared a relationship that was indescribable, and these days ended up being the most precious last days I had with my sister. They were so Godordained looking back. He knew what was to come but we didn’t. We had 2 days of just laying together and imagining what it was going to be like when she brought her baby boy home.

Molley’s water suddenly broke in the middle of the night and upon arriving at the hospital, she was quickly taken to the delivery room. Accompanied by myself, our mother, and her husband, Molley’s labor commenced with an epidural to alleviate the pain that seemed to cloud her usual bright demeanor. An hour after her admission, my excitement was met with a reality that veered from our plans. We knew then something wasn’t right.

As labor progressed, Molley’s vitality was apparently compromised. Her typical vibrant presence was replaced by discomfort— irritability, headache, confusion. Even her gaze, usually so expressive, seemed dulled by the glare of bright lights. Molley pressed on with every ounce of strength, delivering a robust baby boy named Braddock. Molley was able to cherish a brief moment of holding her baby boy. As the labor’s toll mounted, her breathing faltered, and the bleeding escalated.

Molley

The last time I saw her conscious, she was wheeled to the ICU amidst resuscitation attempts. God whispered to my heart in that exact moment that she wasn’t going to make it. I knew. There was no internal battle in my heart. I remember getting a moment to myself and falling on my knees and feeling a sense of unexplainable peace. I knew God was holding me and her. Molley fought for 13 hours as the doctors worked on her but eventually, her earthly journey concluded. We were later told that she had experienced an Amniotic Fluid Embolism. An Amniotic Fluid Embolism is a perilous and rare condition caused by amniotic fluid leaking into her body leading to organ failure, sealing her fate. She fought hard, Gods presence was with her. We prayed over her for hours. She glowed as she took her final breaths. The question lingers: Could more have been done? Perhaps. Did time play a pivotal role? Likely. However, amidst the tragedy, a purpose emerged. A fervent desire to share her story, to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms that may prevent future heartache, was ignited, in the wake of her passing. My sister is never far from the thoughts of the many of us who loved her. Although our heartache from losing Molley may never be healed this side of heaven, in her honor we want to bring awareness to this rare and fatal disorder in hopes to prevent this tragedy from taking the life of other new mothers.

Five years after losing my precious sister, we celebrate her legacy daily with the gift she left on earth, Braddock, a charming, full of life, 5-yearold. Braddock is surrounded by love and support, living with his grandmother, and doing life with our family daily. His teachers, embodying compassion and warmth, provide a nurturing environment. The embrace of Molley’s cherished childhood friends further envelops us. As he navigates life’s journey, Braddock will know of his mother and what a priceless treasure she was to this world from both family and friends. We will continue to ensure that his mother, Molley, is woven into his existence and will forever be with him in spirit.

UNVEILING THE UNSEEN: Raising Awareness for Amniotic Fluid Embolism

THE SILENT INTRUDER: Understanding AFE

UNVEILING THE PUZZLE: How AFE Unfolds

THE WHISPERS OF WARNING: Recognizing AFE Sign

THE QUEST FOR DIAGNOSIS: Navigating

In the heart of every pregnancy and birth story lies an unspoken promise of hope and joy. Yet, within this narrative, there exists a relatively unknown and unpredictable threat that demands our attention – Amniotic Fluid Embolism (AFE). This rare obstetric emergency shatters assumptions of a smooth journey, urging us to shed light on its existence and potential impacts.

Amniotic Fluid Embolism is an infrequent but life-threatening complication that can occur during childbirth. A seemingly routine event, the rupture of the amniotic sac, takes an unforeseen and dire turn when amniotic fluid, containing fetal cells, enters the maternal bloodstream. This intrusion triggers an immune response that can swiftly escalate into a cascade of severe medical complications.

The exact mechanisms that drive AFE are not fully understood, adding to its mystique. Experts speculate that the introduction of fetal cells into the maternal circulation might provoke an exaggerated immune response. The body’s defense mechanisms then spiral out of control, resulting in blood clotting disorders, cardiac dysfunction, and respiratory distress. This medical chaos can quickly lead to catastrophic organ failure.

Awareness is our first line of defense against AFE. The symptoms, unfortunately, can mimic those of other obstetric complications, making prompt recognition challenging. Look for sudden shortness of breath, rapid heart rate, low blood pressure, and altered mental state. Swift diagnosis and intervention are crucial, but vigilance starts with knowing the signs.

The elusive nature of AFE often poses difficulties in diagnosis. Doctors rely on clinical observation, patient history, and an array of diagnostic tests, including blood work and imaging. Given its rarity, doctors might initially rule out more common conditions, potentially delaying effective treatment. Bridging this diagnostic gap demands heightened awareness among medical professionals.

RESPONDING TO THE CALL: Managing AFE

INTO THE UNKNOWN: AFE’s Aftermath

SHINING A LIGHT: Advocating for AFE Awareness

CONCLUSION: Illuminating the Shadows

Time is of the essence when it comes to AFE management. Medical teams mobilize to stabilize the patient’s condition, addressing respiratory distress, circulatory collapse, and coagulation disorders. Swift delivery of the baby, often via emergency cesarean section, might be the best course of action to minimize maternal stress and improve outcomes.

Even for those who survive AFE, the aftermath can be fraught with challenges. Survivors may experience organ damage, neurological deficits, or psychological trauma due to the extreme stress their bodies endured. It’s a stark reminder that while survival is a triumph, the journey doesn’t end there.

Sharing knowledge about AFE is an imperative step towards minimizing its impact. The stories of survivors and those who have lost loved ones highlight the urgency of awareness campaigns. From expectant mothers to medical professionals, communities need to unite to improve recognition, diagnosis, and management of AFE cases.

Sharing knowledge about AFE is an imperative step towards minimizing its In the labyrinth of pregnancy and childbirth, Amniotic Fluid Embolism lurks as an unsettling possibility. But with knowledge comes power, and by shedding light on AFE, we empower ourselves to navigate potential complications. By advocating for awareness, education, and research, we have the chance to transform AFE from an unpredictable threat into a challenge we are prepared to confront. Through united efforts, we can forge safer and healthier paths for mothers and newborns, ensuring that their stories remain tales of hope and joy.

Celebrating 70 years of fashion, music and culture, the 2024 Senior Class of Loyola College Prep will Twist, Rock and Hip Hop their way through the decades at the annual Style Show and Luncheon modeling clothes from local clothiers.

The Loyola Style Show, sponsored by the Loyola Parents’ Association, is chaired this year by Neal Cox, Eloise Graf, and Ashley Smith.

The Style Show has a lasting history at LCP dating back to 1952, a rite of passage for graduating seniors.

“We are honored to chair the 70th Style Show, and we hope to celebrate the longstanding history this event has had not only at Loyola, but also in our community,” said Neal Cox, Chairman. “This year we will showcase the different decades, and we know our seniors are going to have a blast!”

Lunch is provided by Silver Star and attendees can participate in an online auction with trips, jewelry, and one-of-a-kind experiences to bid on.

During the show, Loyola seniors will take the stage in groups “modeling” outfits from gracious local stores. In addition, there is always a Senior Walk spotlighting each and every graduate. And as if that were not enough, a time-honored tradition is the Alumni Walk where seniors join their parents and/or grandparents who were graduates of the following institutions: St. John’s, Jesuit, Loyola, Notre Dame, and St. Vincent Academy in Shreveport; for a special stroll.

Flyer Alumni and Future Flyers will have special seating available. The Style Show is a great way to reconnect with long lost pals and meet some new ones too! General Admission tickets go on sale October 23rd.
