love Christmas. It’s no surprise that my children have inherited my Christmas loving genetics. Once you embark on the tradition of adorning every room with its own Christmas tree, there is no turning back with your kids’ expectations on an annual Christmas Wonderland. There I was, covered in glitter and exhausted, contemplating the idea of a more subdued display next year. The annual ritual of setting up and then dismantling our Christmas décor becomes increasingly overwhelming. Despite my annual vow to not add even a single new ornament to my collection, I just can’t help myself. Amidst the hustle of baking cookies, wrapping gifts, attending holiday events, and sending out Christmas cards, by mid-December, I find myself in a frenzy. When I see Christmas photos from generations past, I marvel at the simplicity. These days were long before Hobby Lobby and Amazon, a time when the joy of Christmas radiated from a single tree, homemade ornaments, and a hint of shimmering tinsel. This raises the question: Do all these elaborate preparations enhance the magic of our holidays, or are they just another set of tasks in our already busy lives? Reflecting on this, my thoughts turned to my mother. Our Christmas loving genetics began with her. She crafted a new set of beautiful ornaments by hand each year and was ahead of her time in over-the-top Christmas decorating. I still hang her handmade ornaments on my own trees. They are some of my most treasured possessions. Coming home from school as she sat sewing Christmas ornaments each December are some of my most treasured childhood memories. Sadly, we lost her to cancer when I was twelve. Our years together were short, but the Christmases we shared were nothing short of magical. I may not have known at the time how worn out she must have been making gingerbread men, or stringing popcorn garland, but I knew her efforts were out of her profound love for us. Her legacy lives on, in the cherished traditions she passed down to me and to her grandchildren whom she never meet this side of Heaven. Her efforts were indeed worthwhile, and as I continue these holiday traditions with my children, I am certain that mine will be as well. In a world where minimalistic Christmas is trending, my children and I will hold dear to our ‘more-is-more’ love of Christmas. This holiday issue of Lola Magazine brings you all the merriment of the season. Our Ultimate Gift Guide is thoughtfully curated to make your holiday shopping a joyous and seamless experience. We’ve also included tips for holiday hosting and gift exchange ideas to ensure your season is filled with laughter and your tables with sumptuous feasts. And as always, we offer the latest in health, beauty, and inspiring stories. As we bask in the wonders of this festive season, let’s celebrate the joy, the sense of community, and the rich traditions that make our holidays uniquely special. Whether you prefer a simple celebration or a lavish one full of fluff, we wish you a holiday season filled with cherished moments, heartfelt connections, and all the enchanting magic this time of year has to offer.

Holiday Joy TO E V E RYONE ON YOU R L I S T
T
he holiday season is a time of giving, and choosing the perfect gift for everyone on your list can be a heartfelt and rewarding endeavor. Instead of getting caught up in the whirlwind of shopping for
material possessions, consider the art of meaningful gift-giving as a way to spread holiday joy and strengthen your connections with loved ones. One of the keys to meaningful gift-giving is to prioritize thoughtfulness over extravagance. Take the time to consider each recipient’s interests, hobbies, and preferences. Whether it’s a personalized book for the bookworm, a handmade scarf for someone who appreciates craftsmanship, or a heartfelt letter for a close friend, tailor your gifts to their unique personalities. Gifting an experience creates lasting memories and meaningful moments that will be cherished long after the holiday season has passed. Simply offering a heartfelt thank-you note can be powerful gestures of love and appreciation. Gifts that begin holiday traditions will be treasured for years to come. Things are expensive forgotten, meaningful gifts are priceless and unforgettable. In a world that often feels rushed and digitalized, the art of meaningful gift-giving can bring us back to the true spirit of the season. It’s about showing gratitude, fostering connections, and spreading joy to everyone on your list, reminding us all that the most precious gift of all is the love and thoughtfulness we share with one another during this magical time of year.

he magic of a baby’s first Christmas is pure joy. It’s all about those wide-eyed looks at twinkling lights, the curiosity about shiny ornaments, and the infectious laughter as they’re introduced to the holiday cheer. It’s in their first bites of gingerbread cookies
and their adorable attempts to reach for colorful decorations. A baby’s first Christmas reminds us of the wonder and innocence that makes this season so special. It’s a time when their presence adds a new sparkle to the festivities, and we’re reminded of the simple joys that truly matter.

iving non-toy Christmas gifts to children might initially sound like you’re that aunt or uncle who gifts socks every year – but wait, there’s more! Instead of adding to the mountain of toys
that often get lost under the couch or mysteriously find their way to a sibling’s room, why not change the game? Offer experiences or items that not only last but also might make them the coolest kid on the block. Think about it: while other kids are trading cards, yours could be bragging about their museum membership or that epic cooking class where they learned to flambeé (under strict supervision, of course). Plus, let’s be real – books, memberships, or classes don’t require batteries or make that incessant beeping noise that drives parents up the wall. Gift for Their Home Did your son or daughter move into a new house this year? If yes, then a kitchen appliance that makes their life easy, like an instapot or airfryer, is a great idea. Restaurant Gift Cards Restaurant vouchers to their favorite restaurant or for a restaurant they have been talking about forever but haven’t visited yet is another excellent idea. It goes to show mom and dad are always paying attention when they are talking.
Tickets to a Concert If your son or daughter loves concerts, they would love to get tickets (because we all know how expensive this can be! Shall I say TAYLOR SWIFT). If you are not sure about their schedule you can always hand them a greeting card with a note inside that says tickets to ‘name of the show, concert, etc.’ So, it will still seem like a surprise but also give them the opportunity to make the reservations according to their schedule.

more difficult when they move away for school, and you really lose touch with what they’re into. But before you give in and decide to hand out good old hard cash, check out these ideas. Sure, cash is easy, but it does seem impersonal and does not create memories like a physical product. After all, nothing can beat the excitement and joy of opening presents on Christmas morning.
Portable Car Jumper If they just bought a new car or their profession requires them to spend a lot of time traveling on the road, a portable car jumper is better than any car accessory you can gift them, seriously. Its compact size makes it easy to store and it packs enough power to jump-start a car. It is a lifesaver if ever the need arises. It is waterproof and it also doubles as a flashlight in emergencies.
Handmade Recipe Book Is your daughter or son always asking you for your recipes? If yes, why not put together a cookbook of all their favorite dishes. Not a regular recipe book, this cookbook will be made with love by hand. An unforgettable gift that they will love to keep in her kitchen and use year after year.
Mini Smartphone Printer We click so many momentous pictures, but sadly they are just left to sit on our phones or cloud. Wouldn’t it be nice if they could print their favorites with a click of a button, from the comfort of their home, or make copies for their friends and family? A mini smartphone printer is the answer! It can connect to any smartphone over Bluetooth, ready to print instantly. It does not take up much space and is very user-friendly. If your son or daughter loves to display pictures in the house, create collages, or scrapbook, then they would really enjoy this gift

Musical Gifts
In this version, the gifts get passed around while everyone remains in their seats. Packages are passed around in a circle, from person to person, while a holiday song or Christmas carol is played. When the music stops, whatever gift each person is holding is the gift they get! You can do it all in one go, with all the gifts moving around. If you prefer to make it last longer, do one, three, or any other number of gifts at a time, then those who got a gift sit out the next round.
26
and classic gift exchange games and meaningful alternatives to spice up your gathering and gift-giving. Let’s dive in! These are some of the most loved, time-tested, and traditional Christmas gift games out there. There’s a good chance you’ve heard of several of them, but we’ve sprinkled in some exciting and fun gift exchange ideas you may have never heard of before.
Secret Santa
This is a classic Christmas gift exchange method. Draw names from a hat at the beginning of December. Use the first few weeks of December to figure out the perfect gift or a few small, creative gifts. Then, one by one at your family gathering, reveal your secret Christmas buddy and give your gifts. This is a fun idea because you must be creative in trying to figure out what “your” person wants, without giving away that you are their Secret Santa.
Cobweb Party This one is fun to set up and fun to play. Works well with name-drawing. Have each giver tie their gift to a ball of colorful yarn (make sure each one is at least 100 yards), then hide the gift and trail the yarn throughout the house. When everyone is done, the house should look like a giant mess of cobwebs. Then the giver hands off the end of the yarn to the recipient, and the race is on! Works best (i.e., craziest) when everyone is chasing their yarn trail at the same time.
Draw a Card
Print out the cards, which have instructions like “swap your gift with someone who owns an iPhone” or “switch your gift with someone wearing glasses.” Pass them out to each participant, and then the game begins.
Gift Exchange Chaos Have everyone grab a random gift from the gift pile, and then sit down. As they hold the gift, if the following statements apply to
› have an inflatable Christmas decoration in your yard › mailed Christmas gifts via snail mail
them, they have to stand up and exchange
› have an angel/star on top of your tree
their gift with someone else standing.
› have ever re-gifted something
These statements might include things
Once all statements are read, make
like, “Stand up if you…
sure no one ended up with the item they
› bought your gift on Black Friday
brought, then have everyone open their gift.
› listened to Christmas music before Thanksgiving
and random Christmas gift games, but the
› own an ugly Christmas sweater
memories will be worth it!
It’s certainly one of the most quirky
There are two ways to play: › The Orderly Way. Have each person pick up the gift they brought. Go around the room and have each player, one at a time, follow the instructions on the card. Gifts can, of course, be swapped multiple times. Once all the instructions have been carried out, everyone gets to open their gift! › The Crazy Way. Have everyone choose a gift – not the one they brought. Set a timer for 3 minutes and let everybody shout over each other trying to fulfill their card’s instructions. Anyone who has not swapped their gift in accordance with their card is eligible to have their gift stolen by those who had their gift swapped the most.

Never Have I Ever
White Elephant Gift Exchange
This is the classic gift-exchange party game. It allows you to avoid having to get a lot of little, inexpensive gifts for everyone and instead choose one nice quality gift. Better gifts are given, and usually at a lower cost. Here’s how it works. Everyone buys a gift for a set dollar amount – $15 or $25 or $50. Whatever your group decides. Each participant brings it to your get-together wrapped. Then everyone chooses a number from a hat. The first person (who gets #1) chooses a gift to open. The second person can “steal” the gift from the first or open a new one. The third person can choose any of the open gifts or open a new one. Each gift can only be stolen a set number of times; most often, each item is limited to 2 or 3 steals. If a person has a gift stolen from them, they open a new present. After all the gifts are open, the first person (who didn’t have the option to steal at the beginning) can choose any gift to steal that isn’t already at the maximum number of steals.
Julklapp
One of our favorite new gift exchange games, this doorbell-ditching scavenger-hunt is perfect for families or friends that all live in the same area! A popular holiday game in Sweden, the name “Julklapp” means “Christmas knock” (Jul = think Yultide; Klapp = clap/knock). Here’s how it works. You package a fake “gift” (not the real one) in multiple layers of wrapping or several boxes, with a small token or note inside that features a clue or riddle. While doing your best to hide your identity, set the package* on the porch, knock on their door, then scramble away. *Make sure everyone participating knows the rules of the game ahead of time, so that there are no worries of what is in the box! The receiver then must figure out who left the gift by using the clues left in the package. If they spot you, it will be easy to figure out. But if they don’t see you, then the clue can lead them on a scavenger hunt, or just be a riddle about you or your home. Once they figure out who you are then they can come and get their gift!
Place all the gifts in a pile in the middle of the room. Everyone stands in a circle around the pile and grabs a random gift and places it on the ground at their feet. The first person grabs a “Never Have I Ever” paper slip from the bag/bowl/hat and reads it out loud. For example, “Never have I ever… cheated in a board game.” This is one of the more entertaining family gift exchange ideas. You’ll be glad you did it! Then, anyone who has done what the card says then must switch places with someone else who isn’t the immediate person to the left or right of them, while leaving the gift on the ground. If multiple people are moving, whoever gets to the empty spot behind the gift first gets it; if it’s just one person moving, they must pick someone to switch spots with them. The person who reads the statement then opens whatever gift is on the floor at their feet then places it back down on the ground. The person to the left then grabs a new paper slip, reads it out loud, and the whole thing starts over again. When all the gifts are opened, whatever is at your feet is your gift! This one is especially fun because the slow reveal of all the gifts builds anticipation for the good ones (and disappointment for the boring ones).
The Left Right Game
Everyone sits in a circle, holding the gift that they brought to the exchange. (Specify beforehand a dollar amount and if there should be a particular theme or type.) The moderator will begin reading a story, and every time the word “left” occurs in the story, everyone passes their gift to the left. Every time the word “right” comes up… you get the picture. Just make sure to count the number of lefts and rights so that people don’t end up with the same gift they brought! When the story is over, you get the gift you are holding.

NeoClear: Revolutionizing Acne Treatment with Advanced Laser Technology In the relentless battle against acne, countless individuals have traversed the path of traditional treatments, from over-the-counter face washes, creams, and lotions to prescription medications. However, these conventional methods often come with their own set of limitations, including side effects, delayed results, and sometimes, inefficacy against severe acne. This is where NeoClear steps in, offering a groundbreaking solution that promises efficacy without the wait, drugs, or side effects.
What is NeoClear by Aerolase?
NeoClear by Aerolase represents a paradigm shift in acne treatment. It’s a novel approach that employs state-of-the-art laser technology to address acne concerns in a manner that is not only efficient but also gentle on the skin. This innovative treatment stands out in its ability to cater to all severities of acne and is versatile enough to be effective on any skin type, including tanned skin.

The core of NeoClear’s effectiveness lies in its unique laser technology. This technology is designed to deliver highenergy light in a way that is both potent and gentle. The laser energy targets and destroys acne-causing bacteria and significantly reduces inflammation. This dual action not only helps control current breakouts but also plays a crucial role in preventing future ones by inhibiting sebum and oil production, two key contributors to acne formation.
Beyond Clearing Acne: Collagen Generation and Scar Reduction
But NeoClear’s benefits don’t just stop at treating active acne. An additional advantage of this treatment is its ability to stimulate collagen production. Collagen, a vital protein in the skin, is instrumental
in healing and rejuvenation. By boosting collagen levels, NeoClear aids in diminishing the appearance of acne scars, leaving the skin not only clear but also smoother and more youthful.
The NeoClear Advantage: Safe, Quick, and Side-Effect-Free
One of the most appealing aspects of NeoClear is its safety profile. Unlike many traditional acne treatments that come with a plethora of side effects, NeoClear is sideeffect-free. It’s a safe option for individuals who are either sensitive to acne medications or wish to avoid them. Moreover, the treatment is quick, making it a convenient option for those with busy schedules.
Conclusion: A New Era in Acne Treatment
NeoClear by Aerolase is more than just an acne treatment; it’s a comprehensive skin rejuvenation solution. Its ability to effectively treat acne, reduce future breakouts, and improve skin texture marks a significant advancement in dermatological care. For those who have felt the frustration of unresponsive acne, NeoClear emerges as a beacon of hope, offering clear, healthy, and radiant skin without the drawbacks of traditional treatments.

uring the holiday season, we are encouraged to think of others and count our blessings. You may have heard the saying attitude of gratitude. This rhyme helps remind us to practice gratitude. Gratitude is the quality of being thankful and showing appreciation for what we have. As parents, we are in the unique position to model gratitude and instill this quality in our children. When we practice gratitude on a regular basis, it not only impacts our mental and physical health, but impacts those around you in a positive way. Instilling a sense of gratitude in children can have lifelong benefits. Ideas for practicing gratitude as a family: Build gratitude into your daily schedule – and practice it! At the family dinner table, everyone can share one thing that happened during the day for which they are grateful. It can be small, such as ‘it was raining today and I was grateful my friend shared their umbrella. Noticing the small, positive things that happen during a day can increase gratitude and positive emotions. Keep a gratitude jar. Have your kids decorate a jar and each day, put a note inside that lists something for which you are grateful. In addition to see how quickly all of those ‘good things’ add up, you can pick a day, such as Thanksgiving or Christmas and read them aloud. Hearing about all the wonderful things you have been grateful for in the past year can further increase gratitude. 42
Hit the pause button. Most of us feel frustrated by something in a normal day. When you find yourself feeling upset or frustrated, hit the pause button and reset your thinking. Come up with something positive about the situation or think about something else entirely that you are thankful for. Model this behavior in front of your children. For example, someone cuts you off in traffic, how should you react? Let your children know you are grateful the driver’s reckless behavior did not cause an accident! Take advantage of the holiday season. The holiday season offers an excellent opportunity to practice gratitude as a family. During your holiday meal celebration, go around the table and have each family express how they appreciate the other. Some prompts could include: “Thank you for…” “What I love about you…” “My holiday wish for you…” In positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships. Gratitude is a wonderful skill to develop in children and teens and they will benefit from this practice throughout their life.

Simply writing or stating a reason to be thankful can improve mood. Encourage kids and teens to make a habit of expressing gratitude and they are more likely to report positive emotions such as happiness and satisfaction. This can help to improve symptoms of anxiety and depression, both of which limit the amount of pleasant, positive emotions that are experienced day-to-day. People who regularly express gratitude for the positive things in their life are shown to be happier overall, leading to lower rates of stress and depression.
Gratitude Increases Social Connection
People have reported feeling more loved and more connected to others in their lives when they routinely practice gratitude or those around them practice gratitude. Sharing gratitude can improve our children’s social bonds with family and friends. In a recent study of high school adolescents’ social media use and gratitude, results suggest that gratitude may be associated with the use of social media for meaningful conversations but does not increase overall social media use (Maheux et al., 2021). Many teens connect to their peers more frequently through social media over in-person interactions. Try encouraging more #gratitude posts and reap the benefits of stronger friendships.
Gratitude Helps To Reduce Suicide Risk
Previous research has established that gratitude reduces suicide risk in young adults by reducing depression and increasing self-esteem (Lin, 2015). In a more recent study, positive self-compassion that includes gratitude helped to reduce suicide risk among adolescents following a traumatic experience (Liu et al., 2020). Studies show that those who express gratitude regularly appear to have a more
positive outlook on life. Given the increased risk of suicidal ideation for teens struggling with anxiety and depression, the use of gratitude can help to manage of one mental health’s most dangerous symptoms. Gratitude can be a cost-free mental health intervention with significant benefits.
Practicing Gratitude Improves Sleep And Overall Health
Both anxious and depressed children tend to experience disturbances in sleep, and gratitude may be the answer. Research has shown that thinking about the things we are grateful for just before bed can improve sleep quality and duration (Wood et al., 2008). Try a little gratitude journaling or saying a prayer of gratitude at bedtime to activate these grateful thoughts. People who actively express gratitude tend to be more engaged in activities to take care of their physical health, like eating well and exercising. This leads to higher energy levels, better sleep and a stronger immune system, or the ability to fight off illness or infection.
Parents And Caregivers Can Model Gratitude At Home
Good news! When parents are more grateful, their children often express more gratitude (Rothenberg et al., 2016; Hussong et al., 2018). As we continue a season of gratitude this year, be sure to model your gratitude by sharing thanks for the people and things that bring joy to your life. Bonus points if you turn this exercise into a way to praise your children (e.g., “I am so grateful that my kids work hard in school and have been so helpful around the house.”) and reap the benefits of increased joy and positive emotion.

BEAUTY 101
The Mascara and Eyelash Curler Rules
You Need to Follow
Written by Tanya Shelton-Harville
M
ascara is the magic wand that instantly transforms our eyes, making them appear brighter, bigger, and oh-so-beautiful. A few swipes can take your look from drab to fab and boost your self-confidence immeasurably. However, this beauty trick has its own set of rules which should be followed to maintain your eye health. They are easy to remember, and simple to follow. Eyelash curlers, undeniably effective in lifting lashes for that wide-eyed look, come with their own set of warnings. When misused or improperly sanitized, they can pull out lashes from the follicles—some of which might never grow back. This is not merely a cosmetic concern. Improper use can lead to infected eyelids, a painful, but treatable experience. In the worst-case scenario, these infections can jeopardize vision, leading to potential blindness. At WK Eye Institute, we believe your eyes are one of the most striking features of your face, and it is essential to take good care of them. Following these three simple rules – removing mascara daily, replacing it every three months and using your eyelash curler with care – will help you maintain eye health, promote lash growth, prevent premature aging, and ensure your makeup looks fresh and attractive. However, if you start experiencing any of the following, crustiness, or grittiness in or around the eyes, sticky lashes, swollen eye lids or any other discomfort of the eyes, please seek out immediate attention of an eye care professional. Remember, your eyes are the windows to your soul; make sure they always shine brightly!
46
Simple Rules of Mascara Rule 1 | Remove Mascara Daily • Prevents Eye Infections: The eyes, specifically the eye lids, are incredibly sensitive and a breeding ground for bacteria. Not removing mascara properly leads to a build-up of product along your lash line and eyelids, which in turn can lead to eye infections such as conjunctivitis or styes. • Promotes Lash Health: Your lashes need to breathe! Keeping mascara on overnight causes lashes to become brittle and break off. It can also clog the hair follicles, hindering the growth of new lashes. • Prevents Aging: The skin around your eyes is extremely delicate and prone to wrinkles. Failure to remove eye makeup properly accelerates skin aging. The tugging and pulling of the skin while removing mascara can also cause fine lines and wrinkles. • Prevents Irritation: Mascara can irritate, especially for those with sensitive eyes. If you experience any reaction to your mascara, remove it immediately and thoroughly. • Keeps your Makeup Fresh: Mascara tends to dry out and become clumpy over time. This not only makes application difficult but also results in an unattractive finish.
Rule 2 | Replace Mascara Every Three Months • Bacteria Build-up: Mascara wands are exposed to bacteria every time you pull it out of the tube and apply it to your lashes. Even if you do not have an eye infection, bacteria from your skin can transfer to the wand and then back into the tube, where it can multiply. • Drying Out: Mascara tends to dry out over time, making it challenging to apply and causing clumping on your lashes. • Formula Breakdown: The ingredients in mascara break down over time, causing the formula to become less effective. This can lead to subpar application and finish. • Eye Health: Old mascara can harbor bacteria, leading to eye infections. It is better to be safe than sorry and replace your mascara every three months to ensure your eye health.
Rule 3 | Eyelash Curlers- Use with Caution • When using an eyelash curler, always apply it with a light touch. • If during the application you sense any tugging on your lashes, promptly ease the pressure. NEVER allow the curler to pull on your lashes. • Always clean your eyelash wand with an alcohol prep pad and let it dry thoroughly before its next use. This ensures any lingering bacteria from prior use is eliminated.

Crafting a Festive Feast
A Guide to Building the Ultimate Holiday Cheese and Charcuterie Table The holiday season is upon us, and what better way to celebrate than by indulging in a decadent spread that combines the best of flavors, textures, and colors? A holiday cheese and charcuterie table is not just a feast for the taste buds but a feast for the eyes as well. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the art of creating a stunning and delicious display that will be the centerpiece of your festive gatherings.
✧ Step 1: Choose Your Canvas
Start with a beautiful board or platter as the canvas for your masterpiece. Whether it’s a rustic wooden board, a sleek marble platter, or a festive holiday-themed tray, the right base sets the tone for your cheese and charcuterie display.
✧ Step 2: Select a Diverse Array of Cheeses
The key to a memorable cheese board is variety. Aim for a mix of textures and flavors by including a combination of soft, semi-soft, and hard cheeses. Consider classics like Brie, cheddar, and Gouda, and introduce some artisanal options like blue cheese, goat cheese, and aged gouda for a touch of sophistication.
57
✧ Step 3: Mix and Match Charcuterie Delights
Charcuterie adds a savory element to your board, providing a perfect balance to the richness of the cheeses. Include an assortment of cured meats such as prosciutto, salami, and chorizo. Get creative with flavors – try truffle-infused salami or spicy capicola for an extra kick.
✧ Step 4: Add Color and Freshness with Fruits
Integrate vibrant fruits to add a burst of color and freshness. Sliced apples, grapes, figs, and pomegranate seeds not only complement the richness of the cheeses and meats but also create a visually appealing display. I love to add sugared cranberries and fresh rosemary during the holidays!
✧ Step 5: Incorporate Crunch and Texture
Include an array of crackers, breadsticks, and artisanal bread to add crunch and texture to your board. Opt for a mix of plain and flavored options to cater to different tastes. Don’t forget to add some nuts and olives for an extra layer of complexity.
✧ Step 6: Enhance with Spreads and Condiments
Elevate your holiday cheese and charcuterie table with a selection of spreads and condiments. Offer sweet options like honey or fruit preserves to pair with the cheeses, and include mustards and chutneys for a savory kick.
✧ Step 7: Arrange with Artistry
Now comes the fun part – arranging your masterpiece! Start by placing larger items like wheels of cheese or bowls of olives strategically. Fill in the gaps with smaller items and garnishes. Consider the visual balance and aim for a mix of colors and shapes. Building a holiday cheese and charcuterie table is not just about creating a delectable spread; it’s about crafting an experience that delights the senses and brings people together. With a bit of creativity and a touch of flair, your festive table will not only be a feast for the palate but a work of art that adds a touch of magic to your holiday celebrations. So, gather your favorite cheeses, charcuterie, and accompaniments, and let the holiday feasting begin! Cheers to a season filled with delicious moments and festive cheer!

A little Science Lesson in Choosing Meats Comparing Italian Salamis and Store-Bought Lunch Meats: The Role of Sulfates and Nitrates When it comes to cured meats, the presence and impact of sulfates and nitrates often differentiate Italian grade salamis from store-bought lunch meats. These additives, commonly used for preservation and flavor enhancement, vary in their use between artisanal and mass-produced meats.
✧ Sulfates and Nitrates in Cured Meats
Used to extend shelf life, enhance color, and prevent bacterial growth, sulfates and nitrates are essential in meat curing. Nitrates, added directly to meats, break down into nitrites over time, while sulfates, typically as sodium or potassium sulfates, act as preservatives.
✧ Italian Salamis
Emphasis on Minimal Additives, Artisanal Italian salamis like Genoa and Soppressata focus on high-quality ingredients and traditional methods, often using fewer additives. This minimal approach highlights the natural meat flavors and adheres to age-old recipes.
✧ Store-Bought Lunch Meats
High Additive Use, In contrast, storebought lunch meats prioritize convenience
and shelf life, leading to more prevalent use of sulfates and nitrates. This raises concerns among some health-conscious consumers about the potential risks of consuming these additives in large quantities. Health Implications: The health debate around these additives in processed meats includes studies linking them to certain health risks, like increased cancer likelihood. However, the evidence is not conclusive, and the impact on health remains under study.
✧ Informed Choices for Consumers
Awareness of these differences enables consumers to make choices that align with their health concerns and taste preferences. Traditionalists may prefer Italian salamis for their minimal additives, while others may choose the convenience of store-bought meats.
✧ Try and keep it clean!
The choice between Italian salamis and store-bought lunch meats ultimately reflects a balance between traditional craftsmanship and modern convenience. Understanding the role of sulfates and nitrates in these products allows for informed decisions that suit individual dietary preferences and values.

Girl Dad was. It’s hard to explain why, other than I was just a young Gr e g Hicks man who held tight to his walls of defense and being vulnerable was a huge no-no. My daughters changed that for me and now all I know is how to show my feelings. If you’ve kept up with this column, you’ve read about my mother. If you’re just tuning in, here’s the cliffs notes. She was the greatest Christian influence I’ve ever had in my life and kept the girls until they went to school. After my divorce, she coached me almost daily on the how-to’s of raising daughters. A lot of what you read here is a direct influence from her. One thing Mother insisted on was holiday traditions. My mothers traditions were often craft or food related. Whether it was fudge, Texas Millionaires, Divinity, or sausage balls, mother enjoyed every minute of cooking in the name of Christmas tradition. After she passed, those cooking traditions unfortunately came to an end, and it was my fault. As a man, I never realized the importance of passing those things down to the girls. Four years went by and moved into our new home in November of 2020, our youngest daughter, P, hit me with a right hook that left my mouth agape. “Hey daddy, can we cook some of Marme’s old recipes tonight? I really miss doing that”. This child has never asked to cook anything since she last cooked with my mother, and I was floored. We snatched out my grandmother’s old cookbook that mother always used and searched until we found something we agreed on, peanut butter balls. While we were searching, Sister joined in and wanted in on the action, but she wanted her own thing and chose a chocolate cheesecake recipe. I’ll tell you now, by

“
Happy holiday (happy holiday), Happy holiday (happy holiday), While the merry bells keep ringing, Happy holiday to you,” sang Andy Williams over the speakers in my Tacoma. It was a bright and brisk winter morning in December of 2014. The girls and I were headed to school in Monroe. This was a 45-minute drive there, 45-minutes back, and it was miserable. I was a 36-years-old dad, with two daughters who were five and six. Getting them dressed and to school on time that far away meant an extremely early wake up for us all. By the time we got in the truck each morning, the girls were DONE! But on this particular morning, I did something my dad did with them in order to brighten their moods; I acted silly. One of the cool things about Christmas around the Monroe area is, there is a radio station that plays Christmas music from the day after Thanksgiving until the day after Christmas and I took full advantage. Prior to being a girl dad, I was a Scrooge and despised Christmas music. Now, desperate to lower the misery level, I threw a Hail Mary pass…I started to sing along with Andy. Soon, I heard a giggle from the back seat, and then another. Before long, they were singing the back-up parts of that song like little professionals. This was the start of our Christmas songs in the truck tradition. The girls always say that it’s not Christmas until we sing Feliz Navi Dad, though. When I say I was a Scrooge before 2008, I really
my grandmothers KitchenAid mixer went into overdrive that night. Dortha Jo Odom was surely dancing on those Streets of Gold over the great-granddaughters she barely met, using her appliance to begin their own Christmas traditions with her once hard-hearted grandson. A true testament that time changes everything. After the cooking was done, we sat down for another tradition that my mother absolutely loved. I searched merry We wish you all a very all over and finally found the greatest Christmas you at th pe ho d an on as Se movie ever made, White Christmas. I Christmas uly tr is n so sea e th t ha can honestly say, even as a man, I w remember thoroughly enjoy this movie. As about! ew we stretched out on the couch, Cr Cheers, The Girl Dad I lit the fireplace. My girls and I, one on either side of me with chocolate milk watched, laughed, and talked about Marme liking this part or that part. This will be our fourth year doing our Christmas traditional cooking and movie watching. We’ve added a few more movies to the list; A Christmas Story, Christmas Vacation, and Die Hard (it’s a Christmas movie, folks), but White Christmas will always be THE one. “A” still cooks her cheesecake and last year it didn’t even have a crack in the middle like usual, a clear sign she’s getting the hang of it. “P” sits ever so patiently and rolls her peanut butter balls while I work on the chocolate shell. I have to admit, the first year I tried to melt down some paraffin wax in the microwave like the directions said but, almost burned the house down. I have since moved on to dipping wax and it’s much easier. I’m learning just like they are I suppose. Gustav Mahler is quoted, “Tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire”. My mother took part in family traditions as a child and passed that down to me and the girls. And while I almost fumbled the ball, it was two little girls who saw me struggling and knew exactly what to do. Preserve the fire and keep those traditions alive.

A break-in happened and a lot of very important things have been stolen but as one goes about the business of daily life completely unaware, the crime wave is growing exponentially. Most people have no concept about the lack of security in their lives. They assume a locked door is enough and the scams that they hear about are mainly done to people who are aging, have memory loss or are incapable of avoiding them.
Cybercrime is a growing threat. The truth is that 1 in 3 people will be scammed, hacked, or defrauded in their lifetime and some of them more than once! Cyber criminals have so many entry points into daily lives now that can wreak havoc on lives and financial security. Your computers, phones, gaming systems and smart home devices are all potentially susceptible to a cyber-attack that might be used to run up fraudulent charges, steal your identity, target your children, and block access to your personal information, according to FEMA. There are over 4,000 ransomware attacks every day in the United States since 2016, according to the FBI. That’s a 300% increase since 2015, which averaged 1,000 ransomware attacks per day. If you are the victim of cybercrime, you could face financial consequences like extortion demands, expenses to restore a stolen identity, legal fees for lawsuits, and even temporary living expenses due to cyberbullying. With the recent OMV data breach here in Louisiana, each and every person in the state should be aware and alert to the fraudulent use of the driver’s license to open new accounts and potentially steal their identity.
What is cybercrime? It is a break-in or break-down of your personal information or identity. How does this crime happen? Most of the time, this crime happens without the person’s awareness until it is too late. A cybercriminal accesses personal data and uses that data to steal identity or money from that person virtually.
65
TYPES OF CYBERCRIME include but are not limited to:
s Cyberattack - a virus or reprogramming of desktops, laptops, smartphones, tablets, Wi-Fi routers and other internet access points, such as smart home devices and security systems.
from buyers on your tablet and the tablet is stolen.
s Online fraud -
problems like identity theft, unauthorized banking or credit card transfers, phishing schemes and other types of fraud.
s Cyberbullying - online harassment that results in wrongful termination, discipline from school, temporary relocation expenses, temporary private tutoring, lost wages and legal expenses.
s Cyberextortion - ransomware attacks that block you from accessing your personal data and demanding a fee to regain control of your computer, smart devices or phone.
s Scamming - a person or persons pretend to be someone you know and they take information from you in this guise and use it to defraud you or entice you into investing into a company, product or service via wire, banking or other means such as a gift card purchase or sending money through cash apps like Zelle, Venmo, Paypal, CashApp, etc.
s Cybertheft - stealing of an online identity such as s Data breach - personal data entrusted to you is lost, stolen or published. For example, if you sell tickets for a school fundraiser and have credit card information
a Facebook page in order to defraud or scam the friends of the person or to use the identity of said person in another type of cybercrime.
Recently, a sweet lady who has been struggling with breast cancer has had her Facebook page hacked and stolen multiple times. She cannot access her photos from all the previous years nor look back at the memories and each time she tries to set up a new account to post about her journey, she gets hacked again. This cruelty has taken a toll on her mentally and emotionally as she struggles to fight cancer physically. Another local business owner shared that he was scammed out of thousands of dollars by a person pretending to be his banker. A third person shared how their business identity was stolen along with consumer information and the clients were harassed with threatening emails, letters proclaiming lawsuits and much more. Scammers can make phone calls appear to come from government entities or businesses, and emails that appear to be legitimate may be attempts to steal your information.
66
TI PS FOR PROTECTION: ^ Protect your data by cutting up credit cards. Use a
secure card that you check regularly when shopping online and report suspicious activity immediately to the card company. The three major credit reporting bureaus are giving consumers access to free credit reports weekly through the end of 2023, accessible by using AnnualCreditReport.com. Check to be sure that accounts are being reported properly and watch for signs of fraud, like accounts you don’t recognize. You can also sign up for a free credit report and score from NerdWallet to receive alerts when there are changes. ^ Keep all bills, checking information and personal identifying information from your trash by burning it or shredding it before disposing of it as this is a primary source that hackers can gain insight. Stolen mail is one of the easiest paths to a stolen identity. Have your mail held if you’re out of town. Consider a U.S. Postal Serviceapproved lockable mailbox. You can also sign up for Informed Delivery (https://www.usps.com/manage/ informed-delivery) through the USPS, which gives you a preview of your mail so you can tell if anything is missing. ^ Never take phone calls from anyone where you share information. Ask them for a return call number and then verify that number before calling it back. Never give out critical information over the phone unless you made that call, even if you think it is someone you trust because AI can now mimic your banker’s voice as well as your child’s. Initiate a callback or return email yourself, working from a known entity such as the official website, rather than responding to a call or email. And be wary of attachments — many contain malware. ^ Change passwords frequently and do not keep passwords the same for multiple accounts as this is a hacker’s dream. ^ Freeze your credit reports with all three major credit bureaus — Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion — restricts access to your records so new credit files cannot be opened. It’s free to freeze your credit and unfreeze when you want to open an account, and it provides the best protection against an identity thief using your data to open a new account. Check the reports regularly. ^ Get insurance coverage such as LifeLock or through your homeowners’ insurance. Cybercrime has gotten so prevalent that some home insurance companies now offer personal cyber insurance to help cover some of these risks. According to a
Forbes article, personal cyber insurance is no longer a luxury but rather a necessity. “Personal cyber insurance, also called “cyberattack insurance,” is often sold as an addon to homeowners’ insurance and can cover a range of cybercrimes as well as help in the recovery.” These policies are essential in the event of cybercrime. What is it about the holiday season that brings out the kid in all of us? It is the gathering of friends and families forming new connections and reflecting on memories. It is the anticipation of something new, unknown, and wonderful that can occur. It is the possibility of something that hasn't happened but has the potential to do so. It is the power of YET. May Your Skin Be
Merry & Bright The holidays are coming, and we want your skin to be glowing just as bright as the holiday lights. To achieve the perfect holiday glow, we recommend you target all the layers of the skin to truly shine.
Under the skin are your muscles which can be targeted by neuromodulators, such as Botox or Dysport, these are used to soften and smooth dynamic wrinkles. The most common areas we recommend neuromodulators are between the eyebrows to stop you from scowling and making the dreaded “11s”, the forehead to soften horizontal lines Dr. Lindsey Pennington and and around the eyes Dr. Skylar Souyoul to alleviate crow’s feet. Another popular area is around the mouth to help improve down turning of the mouth or in the upper lip to help plump the upper lip, also known as the Botox lip flip. Neuromodulators can also be used in some less known areas such as the neck to help smooth lines and define the jawline, or in the jaw to help with jaw clenching and sliming the
72
lower face. Neuromodulators are one of our favorite treatments to do because they provide almost instant gratification with full results in 2 weeks and last 3-4 months. We recommend doing this treatment 3-4 weeks before events. Under the muscle is the bone which is the foundation of the face. As we age, we lose bone and fat which causes our face to look more hallow and the skin to droop. Dermal fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane can help restore this volume. These fillers are made of hyaluronic acid which is naturally found in the body and decreases as we age. By placing these fillers in areas where volume loss has occurred, it can help achieve a more balanced youthful appearance. The most common areas we place filler for facial rejuvenation are in the mid face and cheek area. This gives the appearance of a lifted and more rested face. Addressing the mid face and cheek area can not only help restore a youthful proportion to a more heart shaped face, it can decrease the appearance of nasolabial folds, jowls, and even improve under eyes in some patients. This area is the “most bang for the buck” area to treat and it’s so fun to watch patients have instant gratification from a 30 min office appointment. The next place I usually place filler is in and around
1 EPIDERMIS The top layer of the skin is called the epidermis, and this is where topical skincare products are applied. Depending on the type of product you apply you can pump, smooth, brighten or hydrate. Our must have product to target this layer of the skin is SkinCeuticals Hyaluronic Acid (H.A.) Intensifier or SkinMedica’s HA5 hydrator. These products hydrate while helping improve your skin’s visible firmness, smoothness, and plumpness.
2 DERMAL EPIDERMAL JUNCTION Under the dermis is the dermal epidermal junction (DEJ) and our signature medical grade facial, the DiamondGlow Dermalinfusion, is the perfect no downtime treatment for this layer. This non-invasive, 3-in-1 treatment simultaneously exfoliates with a patented diamond tip, suction extracts impurities, and infuses in to the dermal epidermal junction of skin with condition-specific customized for the patient serums. Depending on your skin goals this facial can be tailored to provide hydration, skin brightening, fight acne or improve collagen production. Do this 1-14 days before a holiday party to to help your skin glow and make-up sit perfectly!
3 DERMIS Below the DEJ is the dermis which is where we have our collagen and elastin. The newest injectable for this area (it is the first and only in this category!) is Skinvive by Juvéderm which hydrates the skin from within with hyaluronic acid to increase your skin’s ability to retain moisture and softness leading to an improvement in skin texture, decrease pore size and improve hydration. This treatment is perfect to help your skin glow while feeling hydrated, refreshed, and healthy.
the mouth to help revolumize the lips and correct the down turning of the corners of the mouth. Other areas fillers can be used are the temples, jawline, chin, under eyes and even earlobes to naturally lift, smooth lines and eliminate sagging. It’s really such an
amazing tool for use with patients, it takes a very artistic touch and significant knowledge of anatomy to achieve beautiful results. The perfect mix of art and science. A popular less known in-office procedure to restore facial volume is biostimulatory fillers such as Sculptra or Radiesse. These are non-traditional fillers which volumize over time by stimulating your own natural collagen production. These fillers last two or more years and are good for full facial rejuvenation since they help with skin quality and loss of volume. They are
73
great to use in areas off the face for crepey skin such as on the neck, chest, arms, thighs, abdomen and above the knees. Since they are stimulating your own collagen, it takes 6-12 weeks for full results, but are so worth the wait. They are subtle and natural. If you are interested in any of the treatments discussed above, please come in for a complimentary consultation. Both Dr. Skylar Souyoul, board certified dermatologist, and Dr. Lindsey Pennington, double board certified facial plastic surgeon, are accepting new patients. Their office Lindsey Pennington, MD Facial Plastics is located at 6030 Line Ave, Suite 110 in Shreveport, LA. They work together combining their expertise to collaborate for a fully integrated approach for the best result for all their patients.

ALLISON MAYFIELD WRITTEN BY MEGANN MCDANIEL Intro from Megann: A recent trend has emphasized learning to ‘say no’. While I agree and sometimes need to remember it is okay to say no to things that overextend us or are not good for us, I also have learned from Allison that sometimes we need to ‘say yes’. I have witnessed Allison giving, doing, and achieving so much. Through spending time with Allison, I have been inspired to say YES more often. But rather than agreeing to do things I don’t want to do when already overcommitted, I have learned to say YES willingly with an open heart and mind. Sometimes the ‘yes’ is to volunteer or donate my time, money, and love. Yet other times it is saying yes to a girl’s night in the middle of the week or to running faster or longer than I thought possible. All this saying yes has not left me more exhausted; it has left me feeling inspired and accomplished yet also humble. I challenge you to say YES to more things in life that challenge you, force you to grow, or are simply fun and frivolous. Because we may not all have 9 lives like the Mayfields.
Allison Bio: I do believe in 9 lives! I was born and raised in Natchitoches, LA where I was a NCHS chief in high school and an NSU Demon for college. My degrees include bachelor’s in science, Kinesiology, NSU and a Master of Education, plus 30 with add on certifications in Health and PE and Adapted PE, NSU. My husband and I celebrated 23 years this November. We moved to Shreveport 22 years ago for him to go back to 76
Nurse Anesthesia school. We have one child, Kinsley Mayfield, 13, who attends Caddo Middle Magnet. I’m passionate about running, giving, and helping others, and I love my special kiddos! Daily I remind myself that “faith overcomes fear”!
You were nearly killed in a car accident as a teenager. Do you mind sharing that story as well as how it may have changed your life? I was in a very traumatic car accident my sophomore year in high school, March 1994. A parent’s worst nightmare, getting a phone call that your daughter has been taken by ambulance from the scene of a car wreck to the hospital. I was airlifted from Natchitoches to Shreveport where I coded 13 times in the helicopter. I’m pretty sure when the doctor comes in the middle of the night to your parents and says “all we can do at this point is pray” that is nothing short of a miracle. Without a doubt, Angels were with me this tragic evening. I suffered multiple internal injuries that included collapsed lungs, punctured liver, a broken jaw, and my right hand severely injured. Several days later after my internal injuries were stable, Dr. Bridges of Bridges to Beauty saved
my right hand from being amputated with a tendon and skin flap surgery that was very successful. I went through intense physical and occupational therapy to learn to reuse my hand that lasted over a year after the accident. I can remember not even being able to move the fingers on my hand the week after I was released from the hospital but after intense therapy, I have full use of my fingers and right hand! My hand is scarred and looks a little different than other people’s right hand, but scars are a sign of life experiences, the ups and downs and all that is in between. In many ways the wreck changed my life. I missed many things in school after that, but I knew God had a plan and purpose. He used me as a testimony to others. God was gracious to me; he knew that my time here in this life wasn’t over and wanted to use me for bigger things in life. I might not have realized this in the weeks after this accident or even years after. However, I know I wouldn’t be the person I am today or living the life I have today if that accident wouldn’t have happened when it did. Accidents make you realize how fortunate you are and not to take the life you have for granted.
You are an Adapted PE teacher in the Caddo School system. Do you feel your life events, such as your wreck, helped lead you to this profession? Or was this inspired by something else? Life events such as being in a car accident definitely led me to my profession. I was in and out of physical and occupational therapy for nearly 3 years after this car accident learning how to use my right hand again. First, I always wanted to work with children. I was one of those kids that played school all the time at home. Then, when I went through so much P.T. and O.T. I became interested in these areas, too. I decided to study Kinesiology thinking I would pursue a career in P.T. instead. After graduating from NSU in Natchitoches, I got married and continued my education. I received my Health and Physical Education certification with an add-on in Adapted PE. I got a job immediately when done with certification in Adapted PE and haven’t looked back for 22 years. Adapted Physical Education is working with special needs children that
may by mentally or physically challenged and improving their motor weaknesses. I honestly can say I love my job! I kind of got both, the teaching aspect and therapy all in one!
You have many jobs: Adapted PE teacher, Fitness Instructor for YMCA, and Cross-Country Coach for Caddo Middle Magnet. You hold many voluntary and charitable roles. How do you juggle all of this? How do you determine which programs you will engage with? I do have a full-time job as an Adapted PE teacher for Caddo schools, coaching cross country for Caddo Middle Magnet and sub fitness instructor for the Y right now. I’m a mom and wife so those are big roles as well. Also, I’ve been dipping my toes in personal running coaching lately, too, which I’m really enjoying. I serve on the board for the local running community in the area as Vice President, the Red River Roadrunners, serve on the board for the CRD foundation that gives back to special needs, and serve on the board for the GUMBO organization. I am one of the coaches for the Youth fit running program in the summer and have been a previous run coach with the Red River Roadrunners Advanced Learn
to Run Class. The past few years I’ve served on the committee for the Iron fish and River Cities Triathlon as volunteer chair, a part of the running team at Sportspectrum and active pusher for Ainsley’s Angels for our area. I coach kids for GUMBO games and Special Olympics, too. Recently, I became involved with the Wyldlife program for Middle Schoolers through 77
Younglife as a “parent volunteer’’ and have loved seeing kids learn about faith all together from all religious backgrounds. As a mom and wife, you learn to juggle and prioritize schedules and lists. Truly, my husband Eddie is wonderful and does a lot of duties for our family. His love language is acts of serving too! He shows this by doing many household chores and making sure our home life is good! As women though, we must learn to make ourselves a priority. I get up at 5 in the morning and start my day by running, I take the time to read my devotionals, read the news for a few minutes all before the day begins! Then my day is more productive, and I am ready to be there for my job duties and other events outside of work. You just learn to juggle it all and usually it all seems to work out just fine! I try not to have to decide between which programs I want to engage in, I want to do it all somehow, someway!
Ainsley’s Angels is an amazing and uplifting charity you helped me discover. You have helped spread awareness, engagement, involvement, fundraising from friends as well as provide love, kindness, awards, friendship, pride, and purpose to those sweet angels. Please tell me more about Ainsley’s Angels and how you became associated with their program.
A question that we hear a lot at events is, “Who is Ainsley?” People see our gear and want to know. They expect us to turn around and point out someone in our group. Instead, we get to explain how a little girl with a beautiful smile inspired her family to spark a movement that has changed the lives of thousands of people across the nation. Whether it be through rolling, running, volunteering, book readings, or witnessing our members at an event, people have been changed. Some of us never had the honor of meeting Ainsley in person, but the course of our lives has been forever altered, nonetheless. Eddie and I first encountered Ainsley’s Angels when we ran our first marathon at the LA marathon in Baton Rouge. I remember seeing this huge organization at the start line and the Angels being pushed during the race and I was like I must be a part of this organization! We contacted several Ainsley’s Angels chapter members in the area but never connected with them. Then a few years later Mr. Eric Kirkendall started an Ainsley’s Angels chapter in the Northwest LA area. We became involved pushing Angels in races and I have gotten many of my students involved with the organization. They are like family and make my heart full of joy pushing any of them across the finish line. Lending my legs for someone that could never run a race and push them to victory is the best reward ever. My whole family pushes with Ainsley’s Angels when we can, even my daughter. I’ve enjoyed seeing her push with me an Angel. Seeing her spread joy to their lives, really makes a momma’s heart full! We’ve done 5k and 10 races to halfmarathons! Pushing for a full marathon is on my bucket list!
Your husband, Eddie nearly died due to illness. During his treatment, you began your health journey that ultimately led to your passion for running. Eddie is a very active and motivated man as well. Was he always passionate about exercise or did this come later in life? My husband, Eddie almost died due to cancer. When our daughter was 2 months old, he was diagnosed with NonHodgkin’s’ Lymphoma. He went through intensive Chemo for 6 months after this and then 3 years later it came back. The second time around he received a stem cell transplant to cure the cancer! He fought the battle and won! Now almost ten years later he has run in 8 marathons since and is about to compete in his first Half-Ironman! I did begin my health journey during Eddie’s sickness. I had never run before and when he was first diagnosed with cancer and Kinsley was 2 months old, I was like l have to do something. It kind of became my therapy during this time. Then I was like who could ever run a marathon, ha! I never imagined I would love to run or run marathons! We both became very active in the running community once he recovered. Eddie has always 78
been passionate about exercise and being active. He ran track in high school and always has been a strong runner! After some running injuries in the past few years, he began cycling and swimming which lead him to a desire to complete a HalfIronman!
Running gave you a new lease on life: a hobby you are passionate about, new friends, new charities, new personal goals, and victories. But running nearly took your life in November 2022 when you were hit by a car while running. Tell me more about the journey of running in your life. Running is part of my identity now, yes. It’s become a big part of my life and for my family. From running races, pushing with Ainsley’s Angels and coaching; I am very passionate about this hobby. In 2020 when the pandemic hit, running and biking was my outlet. Yes, I nearly died last November when I was hit by a car while running. Guess you can say I’m a walking miracle literally. Miracles are real and I am a sole believer in them. I’ve seen them more than once in my 45 years of life. I honestly don’t know how I walked away from getting hit by a car with no broken bones or head injury. I remember very clearly and vividly as I never lost consciousness! One of my best friends, Linnae Magyar, and I were running the Tuesday of Thanksgiving week. We were close to the end of our 6-mile run and were at the red light intersection of Ockley and Line in front of Betty Virginia Park. It was bright and sunny out, a little after the noon hour and the light was red. Linnae and I were debating to go left or through the park and then a lady that was turning right motioned for us to go and I remember telling Linnae “Let’s go through the park” and I started running across the intersection and as I took off the light turned green. Linnae screamed “ALLISON” and I heard tires screeching, a sound I will never forget, and I turned to look left and bam a car struck my left side where it pushed me in the air. It’s like I was in slow motion as I remember thinking to myself when I fell to the ground, I have to move because the car was still rolling. However, when I came back down to fall on the ground the car had stopped, and I landed on the car on my left ribs and rolled down to the ground to my side. I was sitting up
in the intersection and Linnae and the driver of the car were immediately at my side, holding my hands. Sirens were in the distance, and I knew I was going to be ok. I could move all my body parts and I didn’t hit my head. The EMS came and transported me to Ochsner for trauma. After several hours of CT scans and Ex-Rays, I had no broken bones, just bad bruised ribs and horrible bruises and a banged up left side of my body. If you don’t believe in God or have lost faith, then this accident might have your faith a little stronger. God has a mysterious way of showing up in unexpected ways! See that day, Linnae said there must’ve been a thousand angels surrounding me when I got hit as the car striking me was hard and she said it was like I was an acrobat balling up in the air. Well, my husband was a few hours away that day spreading his grandmother’s ashes that had recently passed away! I honestly believe sweet Nana was my guardian angel that day and God’s arms were wrapped around me tight as I survived that day!
You have a daughter; she is precious, and I personally adore her. What do you try/hope to model for her? Is there anything that concerns you regarding the future of our children? Is there anything that excites you for our children? She is precious and I adore her too, not only because she is my child, but she has a kind heart, too. She’s my miracle baby. God gave her to Eddie and me at the right moment because he knew what was coming ahead in our lives with Eddie’s cancer. I tried 3 years to conceive a child and basically told God, “This is all in your hands now.” She was born October 21, 2010, and God knew we needed her. I try and model kindness to others in a big way and giving to others. I always tell her you are a child of God, let’s do what he would want us to do. I hope to model to her to be successful in all areas of life, remain healthy and active, and to be the best that she can be no matter the circumstance. I get concerned with all the things that I’m sure other parents concern themselves with, safety, health, the environment we live in, society, peers, etc. However, I believe if you raise your children right in a loving, Christian home and teach them good and bad that hopefully their future will be bright. Yes, there will be trials and errors but as we said earlier in this interview those are life’s experiences. 79
“Ex”-mas
SURVIVAL GUIDE WRITTEN BY FELECIA WILLIAMS OWNER OF MY SPA MY WAY
A
h, the holidays - a time of cheer, goodwill, and for some, awkward family gatherings featuring that one special guest star: your ex-partner. If you find yourself in this less-than-ideal situation, fear not! We’ve got your back with our hilarious Ex-mas Survival Guide to help you navigate the festive minefield of ex-partner encounters without sacrificing your sanity or eggnog. ‘Tis the Season for Humor: Laughter truly is the best gift. Embrace the absurdity of the situation and sprinkle your encounters with humor. Share funny holiday anecdotes, swap embarrassing memories, and watch as the ice thaws over a cup of cocoa. Who knew a shared laugh could be such a bonding experience? Many ask me the same question, how are you and your exhusband such good friends? This holiday season may be a little different. Yes, we are roommates, yes we still spend important moments of our life together and yes we date other people; well I date and he has met my new love interest. This holiday season may test our friendship/divorceship. I had surgery and he was required to take care of me. Well, let me say that differently. He stepped up and stepped in to make sure not only was my surgery a success, but my twomonth recovery process was as well. This required washing my wounds, changing my bandages, giving me time-sensitive medication throughout the day, feeding me, and keeping me alive for the next two months while giving daily updates to my mother and my best friend. He even scheduled visiting hours for everyone. He said; “Not on my watch.” Now if anyone knows anything about me you know I love a sense of style, I take pride in taking care of my hair, skin, and nails and feeling beautiful. Now if anyone knows anything about my ex-partner he is a highly educated and creative nerd. 80
So you can imagine what I look like when he finally let me leave the house. I looked like a well-styled homeless person. The only thing that matched were my eyeballs. You probably are asking how we achieve this type of relationship and why we have it since we have no children and would not need to engage in such a friendship. First, we went to counseling not to save our marriage but to learn how to become a successfully functioning divorced couple. Secondly, we were honest about why we had even gotten married. The reasons could not have been more different. He still disagrees with me as to why I feel we are married, but I have learned after nine years of marriage and eight years of being divorced, he still struggles with being WRONG. Now, do not email or call me about my tips and tricks to help you through the holidays with your ex. No, I don’t have a Ph.D., in counseling or a mental health degree. I just live every day of my life and can tell you a few things that may help you this holiday season. Yes, these may seem corny or lame but focusing on something silly and funny prevents you from ever having time to remember one of the most difficult journeys of your life (DIVORCE). Remember, the holidays are meant to be enjoyed, even with your ex in the picture. So, take a deep breath, summon your sense of humor, and let the merriment of the season work its magic. With a pinch of laughter and a dash of creativity, surviving the holidays with your ex-partner can be a memorable and fun adventure that leaves you both with new tales to tell in the year to come. Cheers to a hilariously festive Ex-mas season!
NAVIGATING THE HOLIDAYS WITH YOUR EX (without losing your sanity or your eggnog)
DO NOT DISCUSS THE MARRIAGE OR THE DIVORCE! You both know who you used to be and why you are who you are now. No need to have some fake cum-by-ya which will end up in an agreement neither of you can win. UGLY SWEATER CONTEST Turn your awkward get-together into a fun competition by hosting an ugly sweater contest. Invite your ex to participate and see who can find the most hideous, over-the-top sweater. It’s a great icebreaker, and you’ll be too busy laughing to remember why you ever split in the first place. THE MISTLETOE MISDIRECTION Hang mistletoe everywhere, and if your ex happens to find themselves beneath it with you, give them an exaggerated, melodramatic air kiss, complete with a hand flourish. The cheesier, the better! It’s a surefire way to break the tension. CAROLING CATASTROPHE If you have musical talents or not, organizing a group caroling outing can be a hilarious way to enjoy the holidays together. The more off-key and spirited, the better! Your ex might be so busy trying to survive your singing that they forget to be awkward. GINGERBREAD HOUSE SHOWDOWN Compete with your ex in a gingerbread house decorating contest. Get creative, and don’t forget to argue playfully about whether gumdrops or candy canes make the best shingles. After all, what’s a little holiday-themed rivalry between exes?
SANTA’S HELPER SURPRISE Make a surprise visit as Santa’s helper to local children’s hospitals or charity events. It’s hard not to bond when you’re helping others and dressing up as holiday characters. You might just discover you make a great team when it comes to spreading joy. GUESS THE GIFT GAME Wrap up goofy and amusing gifts, then take turns guessing what’s inside. Not only will you share some laughs, but you’ll also get to appreciate the simple joy of gifting – minus the romantic pressure. MINGLE WITH “ELVES” Invite friends to join your holiday gatherings. Having a larger group can dilute the awkwardness and provide distractions in case things take an unexpected turn. “REINDEER GAME” OLYMPICS Host a mini-Olympics event in the snow (or your living room). Plan games like snowman building, snowball fights, or even a race to see who can scarf down the most Christmas cookies. The silly competitiveness can take the edge off any lingering discomfort. THE GREAT ESCAPE If all else fails and you sense an impending holiday disaster, have an escape plan ready. Agree on a safe word with your ex to signal when it’s time to gracefully bow out and find comfort in your own corners of the holiday universe.

THE
FIELDER JOHNSON WEDDING:
An Enchanted Affair at 3 2 0 1 C E N T E N A RY
hreveport witnessed a union that was nothing short of magical as the Jordan Fielder and Jon Johnson came together to celebrate love at the iconic 3201 Centenary. This couple’s story began in the halls of Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, where they honed their athletic prowess—he on the football field and she on the softball diamond. Their bond, forged in the spirit of sportsmanship, blossomed into love, culminating in a Christmas engagement in 2022. In the heart of Shreveport, an old church has been reborn, with the vision of Dick Grieder, 3201 Centenary has become one of the city’s most sought-after wedding venues. This historic location beautifully marries the architectural splendor of the past with contemporary design. With a unique blend of history and modern romance, the floor to ceiling windows, which once bore witness to countless prayers and sermons, now cast colorful hues on joyous wedding celebrations. The venue’s tall, arching ceilings echo with laughter and love, while its revamped interiors provide a chic backdrop for any couple’s dream day.

he atmosphere was electrified by DJ Cody Kauffman’s beats that ensured the dance floor, specially crafted by Pelican Tents, was never empty. A piece of art in itself, the dance floor became the hub of joyous celebrations and dancing the night away. The couple’s sendoff by Pyromania Fireworks provided sparkling magic, adding a touch of grandeur to the festivities. Capturing candid moments, Hollytrees and Events’ photobooth became a hotspot for guests. Meanwhile, the talented Carly Butts, assisted by Brittney Malone Photo, captured timeless memories, their lenses freezing moments that the couple would cherish for a lifetime. Mason Dies, the videographer, wove these moments into a visual narrative, ensuring every emotion and memory was preserved. The seamless flow of the day was 88
credited to Hill Country Events team, who, apart from planning, also coordinate the wedding day, orchestrating every detail to perfection. As the night came to an end, guests left with hearts full of love, joy, and memories of a day that was nothing short of magical. Jordan and Jon’s journey together embarked on a new chapter as they jetted off to Las Vegas for a honeymoon of dreams. They basked in the opulence of the Bellagio, cheered at a Raiders vs. Packers football game, and surrendered to the serenity of poolside lounging and soothing massages, all while exploring the neon-lit vibrancy of the Las Vegas Strip. The Fielder/Johnson wedding at 3201 Centenary was not just an event—it was a testament to love’s timeless dance, an evening where Jordan and Jon, surrounded by family and friends, stepped into their future, hearts and hands entwined.

STRONG Proactive Steps for a Happy and Healthy 2024
T
he year’s end often brings reflection, not only on the moments we’ve cherished, but also on the steps we can take to ensure a healthier future. As a family medicine physician, I’ve observed that a little proactivity can go a long way, especially when it concerns our health. In the hustle and bustle of modern life, and especially during holiday seasons, it is easy for self-care to become an afterthought and go on the backburner. We prioritize others and forget that to care for them, we first need to care for ourselves. Your Primary Care Provider (PCP) is an essential part of this self-care journey. Their role isn’t just about tending to illnesses; it is about total body wellness, both prevention and intervention. Now, you might wonder, how often should you consult your PCP? While this can vary based on individual health needs, adults between 18-39 should generally see their PCP for a wellness exam every 1-2 years. Those aged 40 and older should aim for at least an annual check-up. Beyond these general rules, individuals with specific conditions like diabetes or hypertension might need more frequent visits. It is worth noting that primary care is not about sporadic appointments; it is about establishing a long-term relationship with your PCP, which studies have shown can lead to better health outcomes. A consistent relationship with your PCP has been linked to a 19% lower chance of premature death compared to those who only see specialists. Furthermore, individuals with a dedicated PCP spend less time in the hospital and can save significantly on medical expenses over their lifetime. Your PCP is more than a doctor; they are partners in your health journey. They understand the intricate tapestry of your medical history, lifestyle and current ailments, which allows them to detect potential health issues early on. Regular checkins can be instrumental in catching conditions that are more manageable in their initial stages, such as breast cancer, prostate disease and colon cancer. Imagine your health as a garden; while it may seem tedious to tend to regularly, the blooms of wellness and vitality are worth every effort. Remember to stay up to date on your vaccinations. Think of vaccinations as a frontline defense. These protective measures act as our body’s own superhero squad, keeping harmful illnesses at bay and safeguarding our community.
However, the scope of care goes beyond just vaccinations. Eating healthily and incorporating a rainbow of fruits and vegetables in your diet is essential. Incorporating a variety of colorful fruits and veggies in your diet, like red bell peppers, green broccoli, yellow bananas and blueberries, is not just delightful to the eyes. Each hue offers unique nutrients that keep your body in tip-top shape, offering energy and vital vitamins. Similarly, exercise is so much more than weight loss or muscle tone; it is a celebration of what our bodies can achieve. Regular exercise, whether it is a brisk 10-minute walk, an impromptu dance session or even a stretch during your work break, can do wonders for your heart, lungs and overall mood and can contribute significantly to your overall wellbeing. Find an activity you love, and it will not even feel like a chore. And always remember, mental well-being is equally crucial. Setting aside moments for reflection, meditation or even a deep breath, can make a world of difference. And if ever the weight becomes too heavy, seeking support from loved ones or professionals is a sign of strength. As we usher in a new year, let us remember the essence of life – cherishing moments with our loved ones. While a doctor’s
appointment might not be your ideal holiday activity, think of it as an investment, ensuring that you have many more joyous moments ahead. It is within our power to make proactive choices for our health. It is not just about avoiding illnesses; it is about wholeheartedly embracing life in all its fullness. As 2023 winds down, commit to starting 2024 with your health as a priority, placing YOU first. Take a moment to schedule your next visit or reach out to a primary care provider. Your future self will thank you. 93
