The Sex (And More) Docs
Drs. Cristina Romero-Bosch and John A. Robinson of The Hormone Zone “Power couple” is a term used to describe two successful individuals that are in a monogamous relationship with each other. Beyoncé and Jay-Z and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are great examples of this. There are, however, power couples that exist outside of the limelight. In fact, one resides right here in the Valley. Enter: Drs. Cristina Romero-Bosch and John A. Robinson. In addition to being life partners, Bosch and Robinson own and operate their shared practice, The Hormone Zone, in Scottsdale. With over 24 years of combined experience in naturopathic medicine, this husband-and-wife team offers real health and healing to their patients by way of advanced hormone replacement therapy. Their M.O. is to provide personalized care that optimizes the health of every single patient that walks through their doors. Bosch and Robinson were both called to the health industry early in life. Bosch
gained her appreciation for natural medicine through osmosis, as she comes from a family of doctors. By age 18, Robinson was already dabbling in acupuncture and herbal medicine during a stint at the Spa at Camelback Inn. The pair met in medical school, fell in love and practiced separately for several years before opening The Hormone Zone together in 2015. Their practice isn’t your typical doctor’s office. But then again, these two aren’t your traditional doctors. Affectionately known as The Sex Docs by their patients, Bosch and Robinson offer a portfolio of hormone balancing therapies that promote sexual wellness and age management. They work their magic in a space that is more reminiscent of a five-star spa than an actual medical facility. Of the countless therapies available at The Hormone Zone, Bosch and Robinson cannot speak highly enough about hormone pellets. Beneficial for both men and
women from ages 18 to 100, hormone pellets are an ideal way to restore hormones back to their optimal levels. From relieving menopausal symptoms to increasing one's libido, this unique therapy is a miracle remedy for the body at all stages of life. “We have been doing pellets for over 12 years now and have treated thousands of patients.” Robinson adds, “Our key difference is we know how to incorporate the pellets in a comprehensive treatment.” Though we cannot control our chronological age, we do hold the reins on how we biologically feel. By enlisting the expert help of Bosch and Robinson, the power couple who specialize in hormone replacement therapy and age management medicine, feeling and looking your absolute best has never been easier. When a Mammogram is Just Not Enough. The Most Advanced Technique in Breast Screening The SOFIA 3D Ultrasound IF YOU HAVE DENSE BREASTS YOU HAVE A MUCH HIGHER RISK OF BREAST CANCER • 40% of women have dense breasts and are 4-6 times more prone to breast cancer • This is a higher risk factor than a family history of breast cancer • Dense breasts decreases the sensitivity of a mammogram to detect cancers tremendously • Dense breasts need more screening besides mammograms as they are very limited in diagnosis • Cancer lesions will appear white on mammograms, therefore cancer lesions will hide behind dense tissues
SOFIA is a brand new fast scanning 3D ultrasound machine, never used before in Arizona. It’s fast, painless and provides excellent resolution to detect small size breast lesions. Both breasts will be scanned in 30 seconds each side!
Dr. Assar wants to educate women about breast density, increased risk of breast cancer and how she can help them to identify cancer in early stages with a combination of breast exams, screening, mammogram and ultrasound.

Get up and get moving – for your brain. New research found that higher levels of physical activity may boost mood and energy levels. The mood changes were noticed specifically in those with bipolar disorder. Researchers found that exercise helped increase the mood of those in any form of depressive state, including those with depression, anxiety and bipolar.

Coffee and Parkinson’s With more than 60,000 people being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease each year, researchers have found a possible protection: your daily cup of coffee. Over the years, studies have suggested that coffee might help protect against Parkinson’s disease. Researchers have found that

coffee contains hundreds of compounds that could potentially interact with the chemistry of the body. While it is still a mystery why some people get Parkinson’s and others don’t, researchers are hopeful that they have found a component in coffee that will help slow the progression. U.S. Women’s Healthcare in Last Place When it comes to stats on women’s healthcare in the United States compared to other advanced nations, it’s not looking good. A report published by the Commonwealth Fund found that U.S. women are sicker, spend more on medical bills, skip health care because of cost, have to work harder to get quality medical care and are more likely to die in pregnancy and childbirth than women in other wealthy nations. The good news? Women in the U.S. are less likely to die from breast cancer, and have access to quality medical specialists. The 10 other countries in the study include: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and Britain. Source: www. nbcnews.com.
STEM CELL
TREATMENT FOR DIABETIC NEUROPATHY
Dr. Richard Jacoby, DPM of Extremity Health Center THE DOCTORS AND staff at Extremity Health Centers offer a combined 40+ years of experience in podiatric medicine to residents who live in and around the Phoenix and Scottsdale area. Under the medical direction of podiatrist Richard P. Jacoby, DPM, the practice provides diagnosis and treatment for stubborn, chronic foot and ankle pain and comprehensive and successful treatment of diabetic neuropathy. After graduating from college, Dr. Jacoby attended Villanova University before receiving his doctorate of podiatric medicine at the Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine. He has participated in and taught thousands of hours of Continuing Medical Education over the past few decades. Additionally, he is a past president of the Arizona Podiatry Association and the Association of Extremity Nerve Surgeons and co-authored the book “Sugar Crush: How to Reduce Inflammation, Reverse Nerve Damage, and Reclaim Good Health,” correlating a relationship between sugar and inflammation. Extremity Health Center offers a variety of on-site extremity diagnosis and medical services, including surgery that are available for a wide range of issues, including foot and heel pain, bunions, ankle fractures and sprains, varicose veins, foot and ankle arthritis, diabetic foot, plantar fasciitis, toenail fungus and peripheral neuropathy and neuroma. Dr. Jacoby’s specialty is working with diabetic patients and he has a proven formula to resolve diabetic neuropathy. “What I’ve found is that the progression of most neuropathies is aggressive, insidious and invasive throughout the body.” “Stem cells from umbilical cord blood are the best product out there today, especially for neuropathy,” says Dr.
EXTREMITY HEALTH CENTER UNIQUE MEDICAL SOLUTIONS
Jacoby of the most effect treatment he uses. “ Stem cells are miraculous in that they actively seek out inflammatory tissues and repair and restore tissue, tendon, tissue, bone, nerve or muscle. Stem cells also work in the repair of foot and ankle fractures and Achilles tendonitis. “Stem cells are the biggest paradigm shift in medicine since the germ theory and it’s absolutely true,” Dr. Jacoby explains of stem cell use in diabetic neuropathy. “Patients will get off their medicine, and in most cases will avoid surgery.” Dr. Jacoby uses the Dellon procedure for decompressing peripheral neuropathy. He has utilized the surgical procedure successfully on thousands of patients and none of them have needed a subsequent amputation. He says, “Dr. Dellon perfected the Dellon technique and did the research back in the 80s. I adopted his technique and trained with him 20 years ago.” There have been 100,000 amputations annually due to diabetic neuropathy since the implementation of the Dellon procedure and Dr. Jacoby says that adds up to two million avoidable amputations. “It’s a national disgrace,” he says. It is his belief that the FDA pushes medications that don’t work, which in turn, create situations where amputations are done. The Dellon procedure utilizing stem cells could save thousands of people from avoidable amputations. “Stem cells are the fountain of youth and I’ve used them myself for a severe herniated disc,” finishes Dr. Jacoby. “I was back playing tennis in three days and haven’t needed another injection since.”

Increased Cancer Risk
Young at Brain One of the best ways to keep your brain intact, and avoid dementia, is to keep moving. Findings from a study published in an online issue of Neurology found that higher levels of daily movement is linked to better thinking and memory skills for those in their 70s and 80s. While intense activity and exercise is beneficial, even light activity can make a difference. From small movements such as walking around the house and even performing simple housework like cooking or cleaning to exercise routines, every bit is said to help. Researches state that the physical activity may even help protect your brain against the physical damage of a disease, even if you have an underlying one such as Alzheimer’s.
With levels of obesity rising globally, researchers are growing concerned with the toll it takes on health, including increased cancer risks. According to a recent report, excess body weight is responsible for 3.9 percent of cancer cases globally. The study highlights a relationship between obesity and the risk of 13 cancers, including postmenopausal breast cancer and liver cancer, and a probable relationship with three others, including prostate cancer. Gluten-Free: Not for Everyone To be gluten-free, or to not be gluten-free … that is the question. The gluten-free diet has caught on popularity the last few years, but is it helpful or harmful to participate if it’s not an allergy? Despite the fact that a glutenfree diet is primarily indicated for those with celiac disease and non-gluten celiac sensitivity, the diet has become a go-to diet, even among those who are not

All the Lights The brighter the lights, the brighter the outlook. Poor lighting is often overlooked in the workplace, but bad lighting is associated with a range of ill health effects, both physical and mental, such as eyestrain, headaches, fatigue and also stress and anxiety in more high-pressured work environments. Since we spend much of the day in artificial lighting, it is important to have brighter lights to help with mental and physical aliments. In addition, research shows that just 13-15 minutes of natural light releases “happy hormones” that help offset some of the aliments associated with poor indoor lighting. Source: www. forbes.com.

iarize yourself with the studio and the teachers they have available. 3. Pay attention to size Class size matters. When it comes to a group reformer class, less is more. For one teacher, between four and eight students is the most beneficial. A smaller group ensures that your teacher can keep a watchful eye over you in class, and devote more specialized attention to form and functionality.
5 Things to Know Before Trying Pilates A Pilates studio can be an intimidating atmosphere; the equipment appears foreign and complicated compared to traditional exercise settings, and there is often apprehension because it’s assumed that specialty exercise only has application for those well-trained or experienced in the movements. The Pilates Reformer has been around for over a hundred years, so despite appearing foreign, it has been an established piece of equipment far longer than most people realize. As with any fitness-based exercise model, the intimidations are rooted in the inexperience, and once you take the time to not only read about the history but also challenge yourself to take a class, your apprehensions will wane as your appreciation grows. While Pilates is widely recognized for injury prevention, like any other group fitness class you will want to keep a few things in mind before you take a class.
1. Do your research The Pilates industry is booming and standardization of certification is still trying to catch up. Look for a studio or instructors that have been comprehensively certified. The difference between a weekend program and a globally recognized certification is significant, both in terms of accreditation and commitment. You can visit www.pilatesmethodalliance.com to search for instructors in your city that have passed the PMA certified exam.
2. Schedule a private appointment If you are new to Pilates or newly recovered from an injury, it is best to schedule a private appointment before you take a group class. This specialized time is devoted to assess any injuries you might have, get you familiar with the equipment and answer any questions you have about class. Many studios will offer an introductory private lesson at a discounted rate, and it is a great opportunity to famil-
4. Listen to cues Cues will be given by your teacher to provide general movement guidelines throughout class. These cues are meant to keep you safe as well as provide modifications for exercises that may be too difficult for beginners or require enhancements for people with more experience. 5. Focus on progress, not perfection The goal of Pilates is to help build and stabilize your core strength through lower-impact maneuvers executed through procedure over power. This is about taking slow steps forward, building sustainable strength, not exploding through a traditional exercise in order to build power or physical pomp. The true elegance of the workouts are the foundations that are set in personal goals, not physical appearances.
Jackie Parks is a Pilates Method Alliance Certified Pilates Teacher (PMA-CPT) and owner of The Workshop in Old Town Scottsdale. To schedule an appointment visit www.jackieparkspilates.com.

Oh, Baby! The Journal of Women’s Health recently did an analysis of 678 women enrolled in two studies who were followed for an average of 11 years after giving birth. After the analysis, researchers report that breastfeeding for longer than six months may lead to a smaller waist size for the
mother, and the effect persists for as long as a decade. Those who breastfed for six months or longer had an average waist size about an inch and a half smaller than those who breastfead less than six months. While the researchers controlled for age, pre-pregnancy body mass index, gestational weight
gain, blood pressure, smoking, diet quality, education, race and other health and behavioral characteristics, it is possible that women who breastfeed longer may be more health conscious in general than those who do not. Source: www. nytimes.com.
Don’t Worry, Be Happy The happier you are, the better chance you have to jumpstart your weight loss. According to research, mindfulness techniques can help maintain or improve physical and mental well-being. Findings also show that mindfulness can reduce symptoms of anxiety and enhance cognitive functioning, and it may even improve a person’s immune response. With the increase of cognitive function, mindfulness can help improve physical activity, helping shed those extra pounds. Source: www.medicalnewstoday.com.
If You’re Picking … It’s the tale as old as time, but that doesn’t make it any less true. If you are “choosing” between a good diet or exercise, you can never out run or out train a bad diet. Think of it this way, your calories in are 100 percent what you’ve consumed, while physical activity adds up to 10 to 30 percent of calories out, or burned. According to the National Institutes of Health, there are three main components to energy expenditure: . Basal metabolic rate, the amount of energy it takes 1 just to keep your body running 2. Breaking down food 3. Physical activity he message: While physical activity is important to a T healthy lifestyle, you can never out “burn” a bad diet. Source: www.cnn.com.

Picture This You might have noticed the new calorie counts on all your favorite menus. A recent study shows that they are changing the way we view our foods. A Dartmouth Collegeled study published in Plos One found that when people saw pictures of food with calorie information, it not only made the food less appetizing but it also appeared to change the way their brains responded to the food. The study also concluded that when calorie counts appear next to the photos of the food, it increases your “control system” and decreases the “reward system,” helping diners make wiser choices at mealtime. THE EFFECTIVE MEDICAL MASSAGE: MYOFASCIAL THERAPY
Dr. Bryan Geier talks a new treatment for pain management Wouldn’t it be great if you could treat the majority of all pain related symptoms with a non-invasive approach? Now, you can. As a Chiropractor, my education and training was focused on relieving pain by influencing the nervous system through the use of spinal manipulation. However, in my practice I intently focus on the myo, which is the Latin term for muscles and connective tissue called fascia. Here in lies the term Myofascial therapy. When treating pain, I chose to focus on the myofascia of the body because this is the most important component to influencing the Central Nervous System to decrease pain, specifically honing in on treating this pain by taking an alternative, non-invasive approach. Unfortunately, myofascial therapy receives little attention as a major source of pain and is seldom taught in modern medical school training. Even more unfortunate is the lack of insurance reimbursement for this important therapy. So, let’s dig into the topic a little deeper.
running through, around and crisscrossing every inch of your body including muscle, organs, blood vessels, nerves, spinal cord, brain and skin. The central nervous system receives its greatest amount of sensory nerves from myofascial tissue. This means that the fascia is as important or more important than muscle in sensory input delivery. The key to this statement is that your myofascia becomes the byproduct of your environment without you even realizing it. It experiences stress, memorizes chronic poor posture, feels the weight of your head sitting at the computer all day, and permanently holds onto old untreated injuries. As a result of never ending signaling to the brain, the body develops symptoms like pain and endocrine dysfunction like adrenal fatigue, dysfunctional mood and brain fog, to name a few. If the fascia controls the information that can influence the brain, then this is the first step to calming down the body’s pain response and also improving overall global body function.
THE SCIENCE BEHIND PAIN AND MYOFASCIA The muscular system is the largest sensory organ. Approximately 50 percent of your body weight is made up of about 400 skeletal muscles. Your fascia is actually one giant interconnected web of connective tissue
WHAT IS MYOFASCIAL THERAPY? It is a deep tissue treatment involving the breakdown of fascial adhesions known as trigger points. These trigger points ultimately create a permanently shortened muscle, resulting in pain and muscle dysfunction and, in turn, weakness and uncoordinated movements. Myofascial therapy can be performed in many ways including by a practitioner’s hands, using tools that break down adhesions and stretching. This therapy proves to be a very efficient and effective therapy for pain management, improving athletic performance and reducing cellulite.
COMMON INJURIES RELATED TO MYOFASCIAL TRIGGER POINTS • Pain or stiffness in your neck, mid- or lowback • Headaches or jaw pain • Sciatica and other nerve related symptoms like numbness and tingling • Tendonitis, Bursitis and Plantar Fasciitis • Joint pain especially in your shoulder, knee or wrist • Generalized dull, achy pain • Athletic performance issues
HOW DOES HEALTHY FASCIA BECOME UNHEALTHY FASCIA? This happens when extra layers of fascia grow due to stress, trauma, repetitive motions, dehydration and inflammation. Inflammation comes from repetitive working out or even eating inflammatory foods such as (but not limited to) sugar, fried food, certain oils and processed wheat.

Caitlin AGE: 30 ABOUT ME: I was born and raised Houston, Texas! I moved to Scottsdale a little over three years ago. I work in a dynamic corporate role, connecting the dots across all departments to drive strategy and culture alignment. Outside of work, I am an active traveler – exploring domestic and international places. If I’m not traveling, I’m with friends, laughing over a good glass of wine. If I am not with friends, I am writing in my personal blog. I enjoy reading anything human interest related and classic novels. The biggest compliment someone can ever give me is that they feel like they can be themselves around me. MY TV SHOW IS: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. It is absolutely hysterical, inspiring and feeds my old soul with the historical ties.

WHAT I’M LOOKING FOR IN A SIGNIFICANT OTHER: I am looking for a gentleman that I share deep chemistry and compatibility with. He must share the love for exploring and enjoying new experiences with me. If we can talk for hours about the last book we read or life lesson learned, while laughing the entire time, he might be my forever Valentine. Huge bonus if he is patient and a good listener. My excitable personality needs taming at times! THE MOST IMPORTANT QUALITIES TO ME ARE: If you’re an authentic and kind person at heart, I believe the other qualities for a lasting, loving relationship will follow suit. THE LEAST IMPORTANT QUALITIES TO ME ARE: I am not perfect so I don’t expect you to be either. Let’s be perfectly imperfect together!

Ballin’ A heart-pumping wall ball workout
One of my favorite ways to break up the monotony of training is to think outside the box, especially when it comes to “cardio” or aerobic training. This reps-for-time workout with a ball and wall does just that.
32

02/19
The Setup Set a clock for 15 minutes, grab a 5- to 15-pound med ball based on your ability level and focus on getting 10 quality reps of each exercise in the four-exercise pattern. Your goal is to run through as many reps and cycles as possible in the 15-minute time frame, resting only as needed.
Exercise #1 Wall Balls Start by holding the ball with both hands at chest level with elbows bent, feet standing shoulder width apart standing about 1 foot from the wall. Squat down at least 90 degrees, or as low as your hip mobility allows. In one fluid motion,
explode up through your heels and hips, passing the ball to your highest target. Catch the drop and repeat for 10 reps. Exercise #2 Rotational Toss Standing back 2-4 feet from a wall, hold the ball in both hands. Standing tall up top with your core
engaged, rotate the ball across your body, tossing the ball into the wall with force, catching the return and repeating for 10 reps. Alternate to the other side and repeat for 10 reps. Exercise #3 Split Squat Iso Chest Pass From a split squat
position about 1-3 feet from the wall, prepare to chest pass the ball into the wall with force. Catching the return while keeping your balance with the weight loaded on your front heel, repeat this pattern until you hit 10 reps then alternate legs in the split squat stance.
Exercise #4 Granny Toss With the ball on the floor, get into a deep squat position about 2-4 feet from the wall. While in the squat, grab your ball and explode to a standing position as you throw the ball into the ball “granny style. Let the return drop and
simply re-set up the same position and repeat until you hit 10 reps. The goal is to be explosive and focused here with each repetition.

A Well-balanced Workplace
Three things to pay attention to when settling into a new job
The first day at a new job is filled with many emotions. Along with excitement about the potential that lies ahead comes an eagerness to understand the culture you’re joining. As you settle into your new role, be on the lookout for three signs of a well-balanced workplace.
34
ScottsdaleHealth

Ashley Bowers is the Chief Strategy Officer at the Scottsdale-based behavioral assessment company TTI Success Insights.
A match of core values What does the new company stand for and do they make it known? Some companies paint their core values on the walls for everyone to see. Other organizations may put their core values in a handbook for their employees to refer to from time to time. Still others simply operate in a way consistent with the values they hold. Values can be as different as the people who create them. Some common core values include putting the customer first, treating others with respect and helping coworkers that could use assistance. Feeling confident that your values are aligned with those of the company is important. Today, most employees are seeking a work environment that relates to what is most important to them. If a person’s core values align with those of a particular company, the chances for a long, successful working relationship are greatly enhanced. For example, one of the core values could be to “have each other’s back” which tells the employees that it is a supportive working environment. Be sure to get clarity during your first week. A workforce of engaged employees As you walk around the office to meet your new coworkers, take notice of how many of them seem engaged. Do the majority of your fellow employees seem excited to be there
and do they have the resources they need to excel at their job? If so, chances are much greater that you’ll be part of an engaged workforce. Engaged employees tend to be much more productive because they are connected to the purpose of their work, equipped to do the job, and empowered to make necessary decisions to execute tasks to the best of their abilities. In your first few days, be on the lookout for engaged colleagues. A potential mentor Having someone with experience and influence can help propel your career forward. Someone who has already done what you’re about to start doing can help navigate you to a clearer path of success. Many people want to help others by sharing examples of their own mistakes to help someone else avoid them. You don’t have to ask someone to be your mentor on the first week of the job but start thinking about who may be a good candidate. The sooner you align yourself with the people in your company who have influence, the better your career path is likely headed. The first days, and even weeks, on a new job are exciting and filled with a lot of different signals. No matter how much information comes your way, keeping these three goals in mind will help you to determine if your new company will be a long-term fit for you.

Nutrition Reboot Four ways to reignite the mission of completing your 2019 goals
Many of us tucker out on our habitchanging resolutions by the beginning of February. The most common reason for doing so is that the goal set is too much of a drastic overhaul of previous behaviors. If this is you, don’t throw in the towel! Use these tips to form a new strategy and create the lasting change you’ve been wanting.

1. Eliminate Temptations Remove tempting, low-nutrient, dense food from view or dispose of it altogether. In the Beck Diet Solution, Dr. Judith Beck reminds us that we can “either waste excess food in the trash or in our bodies.” It can be hard to toss perfectly good (and very delicious) food, but it’s by far more draining to exercise willpower
24/7. We have a limited supply of willpower; only deplete it when absolutely necessary. If you don’t want to count macros or calories, focus on being a “nutritarian.” This coined term by Joel Furhman, author of the book Eat to Live, means finding foods that have the highest micronutrient content per calorie. Eating foods in this category like artichokes, carrots, sea vegetables,
berries, cage-free eggs, lean meats, and wild-caught fish will keep you satisfied on lower calories as well as ensure you are getting the valuable micronutrients you need. 2. Utilize Recipes Find recipes that are not overly complicated and initiate one per week versus attempting a new nightly cooking routine. Not into recipes? Choose one new nutrient-dense food to try listed in No. 1 each week. Weight loss-focused goals that don’t include behavior change goals will leave you feeling frustrated when the scale doesn’t budge. Include energizing and filling foods each week like squash,
cauliflower rice and lean protein. Focus on your micronutrients, think about the wins with how well you sleep, your energy levels and your cognitive ability. 3. Always Hydrate Hydrating is the most helpful wellness tip. If you didn’t change anything else the first week of goalsetting, add one more glass of water per day and increase from there. Anchor drinking an additional glass of water to a habit you already do like brushing your teeth in the morning. After you complete the first week of a new behavior, celebrate the win with a non-food item or treat yourself to additional relaxation time.
Hydrating helps cleanse your body and keep you feeling full. Often when we think we are hungry, we are thirsty. Keeping hunger at bay is the simplest strategy to increase adherence to a new
nutrition program. 4. Expect Hiccups Lastly, give yourself grace. Behavior change and weight loss is a journey. Monumental change does not happen without a hitch now
and then. The key is making small, sustainable changes over time. If you found an obstacle was challenging to overcome, consider where things went awry including specifics of the situation,
thoughts, and potential triggers. Create a new game plan for the future. Keep a journal of how you feel through your journey as well as what you ate each day. Documenting is key along with having realistic expectations. Avoid setting fast timelines and avoid setting goals around variables like scale weight. Focus solely on measurements that can be controlled like how many days out of the week you tried a nutritious new food or used your food scale. Be curious and treat misses as lessons to approach things differently moving forward. Each day is a new day and a fresh start to move closer to the person you want to be.

Did you know roses also bring health benefits and can grow quite tall? Here are some other facts you may not know about the blooms.
1. Can’t you C? The rose hips of some rose species are known to be full of vitamin C. This part of the rose can be used to create jelly, jam and marmalade. The hip also has minor medicinal uses and can be pressed or filtered to make rose hip syrup. 2. Pick a variety. There are around 100 species of roses, which vary in color, shape, and climate preference. Tea roses are the most common.

Phoenix Suns’ impactful rookie Deandre Ayton
47
02/19 ScottsdaleHealth
When most people are in their early twenties, their biggest concern is getting to an 8 a.m. class on time. Of course, there are a handful of other things that 20-somethings deal with, like having an existential crisis on a weekly basis, burning the midnight oil before almost every college exam or finding a job to get by until living out their real passion. That’s what navigating your twenties looks like for most people. There are, however, some that have a completely unique version of what this transitional time is like. Take Deandre Ayton, for example. When most 20-year-olds were contemplating whether to put whites and colors in the same load of laundry, then-19-year-old Ayton was attending the 2018 National Basketball Association (NBA) draft in Brooklyn, New York. On June 21, 2018, Ayton was selected as the No. 1 overall pick by the Phoenix Suns – a first in franchise history for the team. Stunned and excited, but not nervous, he was ready to dive head first into this next stage of his life. “It was an unbelievable feeling, one of the best feelings in the world to be selected as the Suns’ number one overall pick,” Ayton says. “Just knowing that I played during high school, college and now I’m an NBA player, it’s all so amazing.” His NBA debut occurred four months later, on October 17, when the Phoenix Suns and Dallas Mavericks duked it out at the Talking Stick Resort Arena downtown. That day, Ayton recorded 18 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. He was the first player to make as impressive of stats at a debut game as former Milwaukee Bucks player Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in 1969. For all you sports (namely basketball) followers, this should come as no surprise, especially since media outlets like Scouts. com and ESPN ranked Ayton as the top player in his 2017 recruiting class. Moreover, Ayton earned numerous awards, like the 2018 Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year and Pac-12 Player of the Year, in his first and only season playing college basketball at the University of Arizona. So, yeah, it was almost a given that his NBA debut game would be one for the books. “[The high praise from sports outlets and recruiters] didn’t really phase me. I have always been more concerned with just playing the sport I love,” he says.
Warming Up for the NBA Ayton’s adoration for basketball developed as an adolescent. Prior to that, he was quite the soccer pro, playing from ages 5 to 13 in his home of Nassau, Bahamas. Admittedly, if he wasn’t pursing basketball, Ayton says he’d be working to be one of the best goalies or forwards the sport has ever seen. Growing up, Ayton was accompanied by two sisters and two brothers. His childhood home could get pretty chaotic at times, but it never lacked in laughter and love. And although his parents didn’t emphasize participating in school sports, the Ayton kids enjoyed playing them together in their spare time. “There was a lot of free land in Nassau, so [my siblings and I] would always venture outdoors without a care in the world and just have fun being kids,” he reminiscences.

By 13, and already reaching staggering heights – some of his current teammates refer to him as “Big Fella” for his 7-foot1-inch frame – Ayton decided to turn his attention to basketball. It was, at first, just a fun activity where he could release built-up energy after class but then his school coaches noticed the teen’s innate capabilities on the court. Ayton went on to attend the Jeff Rodgers’ Basketball Camp, a premier summer basketball program in the Bahamas, where he fine-tuned his skills. It was there that he had an aha! moment. “I got more competitive when I started playing club basketball. I remember thinking to myself, ‘I could be really good at this and maybe even make it,’” he says. After moving to San Diego to attend middle school, Ayton decided to transfer to Hillcrest Prep in Phoenix so that he could continue to advance in the sport. “I knew I wanted more exposure to show the whole world that I was one of the best high school basketball players in my class, and I knew I could achieve that by attending Hillcrest Prep Academy,” Ayton says. College recruiters took note of the young player, which earned him to two official offers – one to play at the University of Kansas and the other with the Arizona Wildcats. Ayton chose the latter out of convenience for his mother. “My mom got tired of traveling,” he elaborates. “She eventually moved to Phoenix to be closer to me, which is why I decided to go with the University of Arizona. [Home] was only a little over an hour drive away from Tucson, which made her happy because she could attend every home game.” Mamma Ayton now gets to experience every Phoenix Suns home game, too. “She travels on the road with me for the experience and to help me manager the pressure,” he says. “But that’s her being a mom and always wanting to be around her son.”
Life as a Rookie So, what’s been the hardest part about being a rookie on a professional team? Nothing, according to Ayton, except no longer having to juggle school work with practices. His primary concern now is just to take care of his body, ensuring that he eats properly and gets enough sleep, and taking note from some of the Suns’ more seasoned players. One veteran that’s been a mentor of sorts to Ayton is Jamal Crawford. “[Jamal has] taught me a lot,” he says. “Whatever situation you are in, he is the first to give you advice. I’ve overcome adversity as the new guy on the team because of his advice.” The Phoenix Suns aren’t currently at the top of their conference, but Ayton continues to be a huge asset to the team. Though he’s reserved off the court, his competitive spirit takes full precedence when on it. No. 22, aka Big Fella, could very well turn things around for the Suns before the end of this season. “I’ve been in the spotlight and out in the public’s eye for a while now. I just don’t worry about the hype or let the pressure get in my head, I just play,” he says. “My goal is to be great on the court and that’s it.”

Taylor Stone is the type of person that dances in grocery store aisles. She talks about vibrations and what true joy means and about living your best life. She’s out to help others heal like she once had to and her goal is to make sure other woman learn how to fall back in love with life, just like she has.
FINDING INNER HAPPINESS Years ago, Taylor Stone seemed like she was living a blessed life. She was thin, beautiful and surrounded by amazing friends. She had been both an Arizona Cardinals and Washington Redskins cheerleader. But secretly, she knew something was wrong. “When I was in my late teens, early twenties, all I cared about was how I looked on the outside,” Stone says. “I paid very little attention to the consequences of what was being done internally to my organs, hormones and overall unhealthy value of the aesthetics.” Stone, like many women, was careful to watch her weight. She would obsessively track her calories and food portioning on a daily basis. Her dancing and cheerleading career was strenuous on her body and required more calories than she was taking in to recuperate. “I wasn’t healthy physically, and my emotional well-being became unstable because of it,” she recalls. “I taxed my body so much that I started developing hormonal issues that come along with lack of nutrients. I knew I had to make

a change. My focus was too much on my body and not enough on my emotional and mental well-being, which should always come first.” It was a wake-up call to Stone, one that she would take on with her typical passion and verve for life. Stone started listening to her body and began eating more intuitively, asking herself daily what her body needed. She stopped counting calories and started thinking of food differently. “Today, I wake up feeling nourished on a mind, body, and soul level and it’s because I don’t restrict myself anymore. We need to realize that every single body is different and we need to start listening to what our individual bodies need. Emotional well-being is so much more
called Vibe Higher, where she shares tools and secrets to help listeners increase confidence, radiate health and feel stable again, allowing them to live a life they are in love with and inspired by. Whether it’s her podcast or personal consulting service, Stone loves sharing advice on staying grounded and finding joy in life. “I like to encourage meditation outside in nature and spending as much time alone as you can. You can’t find out what your soul truly wants if you are constantly inundated with external noise,” She says. “Also, set boundaries and audit your circle of friends. Make sure that those you surround yourself with are adding to your life and not depleting your energy.” One of her biggest tips she offers is
“I focus on emotional and mental well-being before anything else when I am coaching women, as everything falls into place and aligns once you have cleared what may have caused restrictive eating and lack of self-worth in the first place,”
important and fulfilling than a body fat percentage or a number on a scale.”
PASSING ON THE MESSAGE Stone took this new found inspiration and turned it into her life’s passion. After graduating in 2010 from Arizona State with a degree in health promotion, she launched Inner Goddess Health, a spiritual life coaching and holistic wellness service. She now provides one-on-one coaching to women, helping them step into their full potential. “I focus on emotional and mental well-being before anything else when I am coaching women, as everything falls into place and aligns once you have cleared what may have caused restrictive eating and lack of self-worth in the first place,” she explains. Stone also has a bimonthly podcast
a lesson that took her 28 years to learn herself. “Understand that your thoughts and emotions create your physical state and what you end up manifesting in life,” she advises. “It wasn’t until I learned to change my thinking that I started to heal, physically and emotionally.” Stone’s journey back to a healthy state took time but along the way she found herself and she is ready to deliver those lessons to all the women she meets. “I truly love helping other women step into joy and live the life they have always wanted to create, but still have some limiting beliefs around it,” Stone says. “My intention is to help heal and raise the vibration of the world and help to change as many lives as I can.” For more about Stone or Inner Goddess Health, visit www.innergoddesshealth.com.

5 Ways to Bond With Your Coworkers
Get to know your colleagues for a better work environment Bonding with colleagues can make a job a heckuva lot more fun. When you look back, the latest marketing strategy, or quota achievement, may not come to mind but rather the special friendships you made while staying late after hours, working as a team to accomplish a goal, and supporting one another through the trials and tribulations of the job. Not surprisingly, what makes work more palatable and engaging comes from those bonds with coworkers. For example, Globoforce discovered 73 percent of the employees surveyed have laughed together and 61 percent have cried with a coworker. Supportive and trusting relationships may even help employees stay engaged and maintain a sense of belonging at a company.

If you are looking to enhance your work relationships and make your job a lot more enjoyable, get to know your coworkers! Here are five simple ways to bond: 1. Offer to work on a project with them Asking a coworker to spend time on a project with you is a great way to make a stronger connection, especially if you don’t know them well but want to create a connection. Extending this offer shows you are interested in their ideas or skills, and that you want to be successful together. The coworker will instantly appreciate this because asking them to take part shows that you believe they can bring value to the project. Additionally,
the actual time spent working on the project will give you more time to bond and could to lead to a solid partnership and future projects. 2. Give them a compliment in front of their boss There’s better compliment than an unsolicited one. Praise your colleague in front of their boss, especially when it is least expected. This sets off a series of positive vibes between parties that enforce a bond based on mutual respect. It is also telling your coworker that you
genuinely like them and appreciate their contributions to the workplace. 3. Ask them for advice Asking a coworker for their advice or opinion is another form of a compliment. By doing this you are expressing that you value their input, and are making yourself instantly relatable because you have shown a little vulnerability. Now that you have opened this door, your coworker will be comfortable asking the same of you. In effect, this will set
the pace for a bond because you are learning to lean on each other and are creating a safe space to do so! 4. Team-building exercise Some may cringe at this thought, but it’s is actually a great way to get to know and bond with your colleagues outside of the work environment. Plan something you may actually enjoy if that helps. The bottom line is a team-building event will get people out of their comfort zone and get them to do something differ-
ent and challenging. Seeing each other in laughable, winning or awkward situations will be something only you can share and will propel the coworker bond. Once you do get back to the fluorescent lighting of the office, you will find that your relationships are at a different level. 5. Break bread together If you really want to get quality time in with a coworker, simply ask them to go to lunch. Breaking bread with someone allows the time and space to get to know
each other outside of the office setting. It is a great way to hear more about their families, backgrounds and hobbies. Knowing someone on a personal level will bring in the component of familiarity to your working relationship. Think of these tips as automatic ways to enjoy doing your job and find your tribe within your workplace. The bond that you have with your colleagues will enhance your daily happiness and extend through the rest of your working and personal life.

Pucker Up
Natural ways to plump your lips and be more kissable
1. Stay Hydrated The skin on your lips is more sensitive to dehydration than other parts of your face, and if you are dehydrated, it will show. While there isn’t a predetermined amount of water each person should drink, the more water you do drink, the less chapped your lips will get. The water you choose is important, too! Try to pick something with a high pH, as this will be absorbed by your body quicker and easier.
Nothing says “kiss me” more than a set of luscious lips. Full, moist lips with a perfectly defined Cupid’s bow (yes, that’s the real name for those little lines from your nose to the points of your top lip!) scream youth and beauty but after a cold winter, it’s hard to get them in good shape. So, what can you do to keep your lips looking beautiful and soft for Valentine’s Day and beyond? Some people swear by fillers, but not everyone wants to spend hundreds of dollars at a plastic surgeon plumping their lips. Instead here are some natural ways to get that kiss me glow.

2. Protect With Sunscreen Use sunscreen to protect your sensitive lips from sun damage that can age them prematurely. There are many lip glosses that contain SPF to protect your precious pout. Try to find a lip gloss that has an SPF of 30 or higher and reapply several times per day. Even if you work inside, wear a good SPF as the sun can damage your lips even through a window or driving in your car.
3. Use Hyaluronic Acid Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance that adds moisture, volume, and shine to your lips. There are several lip gloss brands that contain HA, and regular use of these products can actually increase the volume in your lips. You might have a slight tingle from the product at first, and after a few days will have full, hydrated lips. It’s best to have an a.m. and p.m. formulation so that you get plumping at night with sun protection during the day. 4. Exfoliate Just like your face, it’s important to exfoliate your lips on a weekly basis with a gentle natural exfoliant, like a sugar scrub. This will remove dull, dead skin on the surface and encourage the production of new skin. Getting rid of the dry surface skin also allows products to penetrate easier.

Upping the Cadence The key to picking up speed
Very rarely is there a free and simple way in endurance sports to get faster, but for 95 percent of athletes, there may be one solution. In both cycling and running, most competitors can pick up some speed and endurance through simply increasing cadence. On the bicycle, this is usually called rotations per minute, or RPM. In running, it’s often referred to as your strikerate. It’s a common belief that to go faster when running, you should reach further and take bigger strides. When it comes to cycling, you increase speed by putting the bike in a bigger gear and pushing harder. This is only true to a point, and usually leaves you exhausted in a relatively short period of the time. In longer applications like endurance racing, or anything over just a few minutes, maintaining a given speed becomes more of a factor over time. To do this, you need to increase your cadence or RPMs on the bike, and take smaller, lighter steps while running. Start thinking of this activity as breaking down the total amount of work into smaller pieces rather than trying to do it all at once. As an added benefit, the toll that the activity takes on your body is less with a higher cadence as muscular
58
ScottsdaleHealth
02/19
strain is reduced as is overall impact. How do you apply this to training and racing? On your exercise bike or outdoor bicycle, look at the RPM number regularly. Shoot for at least 90 rotations per minute for most of your riding time, when counting the circles of one leg. If you wish to go easier, shift into an easier gear, but always shoot for that golden 90-plus RPM number. Interestingly, the same number works for running, or around 90 foot strikes total per minute, per foot. A good place to start is to count your total foot strikes on a treadmill, and then try to increase them by five per leg each minute, by reaching less and focusing a lot on being light on your feet. Again, when practicing both applications, your speed shouldn’t change, just the number of cycles that your legs go through. It takes some focused work and getting used to, and in fact most people actually slow down a bit before they realize the speed benefit. If you apply yourself to increasing cadence over time, you’ll find yourself running and riding longer and faster with your legs recovering quicker, allowing for greater success.
