Increased Cancer Risk

According to a recent report, excess body weight is responsible for 3.9 percent of cancer cases globally. 5 Things to Know Before Trying Pilates A Pilates studio can be an intimidating atmosphere; the equipment appears foreign and complicated compared to traditional exercise settings, and there is often apprehension because it’s assumed that specialty exercise only has application for those well-trained or experienced in the movements.

The Pilates Reformer has been around for over a hundred years, so despite appearing foreign, it has been an established piece of equipment far longer than most people realize. As with any fitness-based exercise model, the intimidations are rooted in the inexperience, and once you take the time to not only read about the history but also challenge yourself to take a class, your apprehensions will wane as your appreciation grows.

While Pilates is widely recognized for injury prevention, like any other group fitness class you will want to keep a few things in mind before you take a class.

1. Do your research The Pilates industry is booming and standardization of certification is still trying to catch up.

Look for a studio or instructors that have been comprehensively certified. The difference between a weekend program and a globally recognized certification is significant, both in terms of accreditation and commitment. 2. Schedule a private appointment If you are new to Pilates or newly recovered from an injury, it is best to schedule a private appointment before you take a group class. Vegan Chocolate Chip Pizookie For Two

Serving size: 2 ½ cup almond flour 1 tablespoon coconut flour 1 tablespoon peanut butter ½ teaspoon baking soda 2 tablespoon brown sugar 3 tablespoon almond milk or coconut milk ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract ¼ cup dark chocolate chips Pinch of coarse sea salt

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a medium bowl, combine all ingredients (except salt) until the mixture sticks together and forms a ball. Press dough into a large, greased ramekin (5- by 5-inches) baking pan or shape the dough into a flat circle and place in the center of a baking sheet. Bake pizookie for 13 minutes or until edges turn golden brown, sprinkle with coarse sea salt and enjoy immediately with a scoop of ice cream!

The Journal of Women’s Health recently did an analysis of 678 women enrolled in two studies who were followed for an average of 11 years after giving birth. After the analysis, researchers report that breastfeeding for longer than six months may lead to a smaller waist size for the

mother, and the effect persists for as long as a decade.

Those who breastfed for six months or longer had an average waist size about an inch and a half smaller than those who breastfead less than six months.

While the researchers controlled for age, pre-pregnancy body mass index, gestational weight

gain, blood pressure, smoking, diet quality, education, race and other health and behavioral characteristics, it is possible that women who breastfeed longer may be more health conscious in general than those who do not.

A recent study shows that they are changing the way we view our foods. A Dartmouth Collegeled study published in Plos One found that when people saw pictures of food with calorie information, it not only made the food less appetizing but it also appeared to change the way their brains responded to the food. The study also concluded that when calorie counts appear next to the photos of the food, it increases your “control system” and decreases the “reward system,” helping diners make wiser choices at mealtime.

Dr. Bryan Geier talks a new treatment for pain management Wouldn’t it be great if you could treat the majority of all pain related symptoms with a non-invasive approach? Now, you can. As a Chiropractor, my education and training was focused on relieving pain by influencing the nervous system through the use of spinal manipulation. However, in my practice I intently focus on the myo, which is the Latin term for muscles and connective tissue called fascia.

Here in lies the term Myofascial therapy. When treating pain, I chose to focus on the myofascia of the body because this is the most important component to influencing the Central Nervous System to decrease pain, specifically honing in on treating this pain by taking an alternative, non-invasive approach. Unfortunately, myofascial therapy receives little attention as a major source of pain and is seldom taught in modern medical school training. Even more unfortunate is the lack of insurance reimbursement for this important therapy. So, let’s dig into the topic a little deeper.

The central nervous system receives its greatest amount of sensory nerves from myofascial tissue. This means that the fascia is as important or more important than muscle in sensory input delivery. The key to this statement is that your myofascia becomes the byproduct of your environment without you even realizing it. It experiences stress, memorizes chronic poor posture, feels the weight of your head sitting at the computer all day, and permanently holds onto old untreated injuries. As a result of never ending signaling to the brain, the body develops symptoms like pain and endocrine dysfunction like adrenal fatigue, dysfunctional mood and brain fog, to name a few. If the fascia controls the information that can influence the brain, then this is the first step to calming down the body’s pain response and also improving overall global body function.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND PAIN AND MYOFASCIA The muscular system is the largest sensory organ. Approximately 50 percent of your body weight is made up of about 400 skeletal muscles. Your fascia is actually one giant interconnected web of connective tissue

WHAT IS MYOFASCIAL THERAPY? It is a deep tissue treatment involving the breakdown of fascial adhesions known as trigger points. These trigger points ultimately create a permanently shortened muscle, resulting in pain and muscle dysfunction and, in turn, weakness and uncoordinated movements. Myofascial therapy can be performed in many ways including by a practitioner’s hands, using tools that break down adhesions and stretching. This therapy proves to be a very efficient and effective therapy for pain management, improving athletic performance and reducing cellulite.

One of my favorite ways to break up the monotony of training is to think outside the box, especially when it comes to “cardio” or aerobic training.

This reps-for-time workout with a ball and wall does just that.

The Setup Set a clock for 15 minutes, grab a 5- to 15-pound med ball based on your ability level and focus on getting 10 quality reps of each exercise in the four-exercise pattern. Your goal is to run through as many reps and cycles as possible in the 15-minute time frame, resting only as needed.

Exercise #1 Wall Balls Start by holding the ball with both hands at chest level with elbows bent, feet standing shoulder width apart standing about 1 foot from the wall. Squat down at least 90 degrees, or as low as your hip mobility allows.

In one fluid motion,

explode up through your heels and hips, passing the ball to your highest target.

Catch the drop and repeat for 10 reps.

Exercise #2 Rotational Toss Standing back 2-4 feet from a wall, hold the ball in both hands. Standing tall up top with your core

engaged, rotate the ball across your body, tossing the ball into the wall with force, catching the return and repeating for 10 reps. Alternate to the other side and repeat for 10 reps.

Exercise #3 Split Squat Iso Chest Pass From a split squat

position about 1-3 feet from the wall, prepare to chest pass the ball into the wall with force. Catching the return while keeping your balance with the weight loaded on your front heel, repeat this pattern until you hit 10 reps then alternate legs in the split squat stance.

Exercise #4 Granny Toss With the ball on the floor, get into a deep squat position about 2-4 feet from the wall. While in the squat, grab your ball and explode to a standing position as you throw the ball into the ball “granny� style. Let the return drop and

simply re-set up the same position and repeat until you hit 10 reps. The goal is to be explosive and focused here with each repetition.

Still others simply operate in a way consistent with the values they hold.

Values can be as different as the people who create them. Some common core values include putting the customer first, treating others with respect and helping coworkers that could use assistance.

Feeling confident that your values are aligned with those of the company is important.

Today, most employees are seeking a work environment that relates to what is most important to them. If a person’s core values align with those of a particular company, the chances for a long, successful working relationship are greatly enhanced. For example, one of the core values could be to “have each other’s back” which tells the employees that it is a supportive working environment. Be sure to get clarity during your first week.

A workforce of engaged employees As you walk around the office to meet your new coworkers, take notice of how many of them seem engaged. Do the majority of your fellow employees seem excited to be there

and do they have the resources they need to excel at their job?

If so, chances are much greater that you’ll be part of an engaged workforce.

Engaged employees tend to be much more productive because they are connected to the purpose of their work, equipped to do the job, and empowered to make necessary decisions to execute tasks to the best of their abilities. In your first few days, be on the lookout for engaged colleagues.

A potential mentor Having someone with experience and influence can help propel your career forward. Someone who has already done what you’re about to start doing can help navigate you to a clearer path of success. Many people want to help others by sharing examples of their own mistakes to help someone else avoid them. You don’t have to ask someone to be your mentor on the first week of the job but start thinking about who may be a good candidate.

The sooner you align yourself with the people in your company who have influence, the better your career path is likely headed.

The first days, and even weeks, on a new job are exciting and filled with a lot of different signals. No matter how much information comes your way, keeping these three goals in mind will help you to determine if your new company will be a long-term fit for you.

1. Eliminate Temptations Remove tempting, low-nutrient, dense food from view or dispose of it altogether.

In the Beck Diet Solution, Dr. Judith Beck reminds us that we can “either waste excess food in the trash or in our bodies.” It can be hard to toss perfectly good (and very delicious) food, but it’s by far more draining to exercise willpower

24/7. We have a limited supply of willpower; only deplete it when absolutely necessary. If you don’t want to count macros or calories, focus on being a “nutritarian.” This coined term by Joel Furhman, author of the book Eat to Live, means finding foods that have the highest micronutrient content per calorie. Eating foods in this category like artichokes, carrots, sea vegetables,

berries, cage-free eggs, lean meats, and wild-caught fish will keep you satisfied on lower calories as well as ensure you are getting the valuable micronutrients you need.

2. Utilize Recipes Find recipes that are not overly complicated and initiate one per week versus attempting a new nightly cooking routine. Not into recipes? Choose one new nutrient-dense food to try listed in No. 1 each week.

Weight loss-focused goals that don’t include behavior change goals will leave you feeling frustrated when the scale doesn’t budge.

Include energizing and filling foods each week like squash,

cauliflower rice and lean protein. Focus on your micronutrients, think about the wins with how well you sleep, your energy levels and your cognitive ability.

3. Always Hydrate Hydrating is the most helpful wellness tip.

If you didn’t change anything else the first week of goalsetting, add one more glass of water per day and increase from there. Anchor drinking an additional glass of water to a habit you already do like brushing your teeth in the morning.

After you complete the first week of a new behavior, celebrate the win with a non-food item or treat yourself to additional relaxation time.

When most people are in their early twenties, their biggest concern is getting to an 8 a.m. class on time.

Of course, there are a handful of other things that 20-somethings deal with, like having an existential crisis on a weekly basis, burning the midnight oil before almost every college exam or finding a job to get by until living out their real passion. That’s what navigating your twenties looks like for most people. There are, however, some that have a completely unique version of what this transitional time is like. Take Deandre Ayton, for example.

When most 20-year-olds were contemplating whether to put whites and colors in the same load of laundry, then-19-year-old Ayton was attending the 2018 National Basketball Association (NBA) draft in Brooklyn, New York.

On June 21, 2018, Ayton was selected as the No. 1 overall pick by the Phoenix Suns – a first in franchise history for the team. Stunned and excited, but not nervous, he was ready to dive head first into this next stage of his life.

“It was an unbelievable feeling, one of the best feelings in the world to be selected as the Suns’ number one overall pick,” Ayton says. “Just knowing that I played during high school, college and now I’m an NBA player, it’s all so amazing.”

His NBA debut occurred four months later, on October 17, when the Phoenix Suns and Dallas Mavericks duked it out at the Talking Stick Resort Arena downtown. That day, Ayton recorded 18 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. He was the first player to make as impressive of stats at a debut game as former Milwaukee Bucks player Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in 1969.

For all you sports (namely basketball) followers, this should come as no surprise, especially since media outlets like Scouts. com and ESPN ranked Ayton as the top player in his 2017 recruiting class. Moreover, Ayton earned numerous awards, like the 2018 Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year and Pac-12 Player of the Year, in his first and only season playing college basketball at the University of Arizona. So, yeah, it was almost a given that his NBA debut game would be one for the books. “[The high praise from sports outlets and recruiters] didn’t really phase me. I have always been more concerned with just playing the sport I love,” he says.

Warming Up for the NBA Ayton’s adoration for basketball developed as an adolescent.

Prior to that, he was quite the soccer pro, playing from ages 5 to 13 in his home of Nassau, Bahamas. Admittedly, if he wasn’t pursing basketball, Ayton says he’d be working to be one of the best goalies or forwards the sport has ever seen.

Growing up, Ayton was accompanied by two sisters and two brothers. His childhood home could get pretty chaotic at times, but it never lacked in laughter and love. And although his parents didn’t emphasize participating in school sports, the Ayton kids enjoyed playing them together in their spare time.

“There was a lot of free land in Nassau, so [my siblings and I] would always venture outdoors without a care in the world and just have fun being kids,” he reminiscences.

By 13, and already reaching staggering heights – some of his current teammates refer to him as “Big Fella” for his 7-foot1-inch frame – Ayton decided to turn his attention to basketball.

It was, at first, just a fun activity where he could release built-up energy after class but then his school coaches noticed the teen’s innate capabilities on the court. Ayton went on to attend the Jeff Rodgers’ Basketball Camp, a premier summer basketball program in the Bahamas, where he fine-tuned his skills. It was there that he had an aha! moment.

“I got more competitive when I started playing club basketball. I remember thinking to myself, ‘I could be really good at this and maybe even make it,’” he says.

After moving to San Diego to attend middle school, Ayton decided to transfer to Hillcrest Prep in Phoenix so that he could continue to advance in the sport.

“I knew I wanted more exposure to show the whole world that I was one of the best high school basketball players in my class, and I knew I could achieve that by attending Hillcrest Prep Academy,” Ayton says.

College recruiters took note of the young player, which earned him to two official offers – one to play at the University of Kansas and the other with the Arizona Wildcats. Ayton chose the latter out of convenience for his mother.

“My mom got tired of traveling,” he elaborates. “She eventually moved to Phoenix to be closer to me, which is why I decided to go with the University of Arizona. [Home] was only a little over an hour drive away from Tucson, which made her happy because she could attend every home game.”

Mamma Ayton now gets to experience every Phoenix Suns home game, too.

“She travels on the road with me for the experience and to help me manager the pressure,” he says. “But that’s her being a mom and always wanting to be around her son.”

Life as a Rookie So, what’s been the hardest part about being a rookie on a professional team? Nothing, according to Ayton, except no longer having to juggle school work with practices. His primary concern now is just to take care of his body, ensuring that he eats properly and gets enough sleep, and taking note from some of the Suns’ more seasoned players. One veteran that’s been a mentor of sorts to Ayton is Jamal Crawford. “[Jamal has] taught me a lot,” he says. “Whatever situation you are in, he is the first to give you advice. I’ve overcome adversity as the new guy on the team because of his advice.”

The Phoenix Suns aren’t currently at the top of their conference, but Ayton continues to be a huge asset to the team.

Though he’s reserved off the court, his competitive spirit takes full precedence when on it. No. 22, aka Big Fella, could very well turn things around for the Suns before the end of this season.

“I’ve been in the spotlight and out in the public’s eye for a while now. I just don’t worry about the hype or let the pressure get in my head, I just play,” he says. “My goal is to be great on the court and that’s it.”

Taylor Stone is the type of person that dances in grocery store aisles. She talks about vibrations and what true joy means and about living your best life. She’s out to help others heal like she once had to and her goal is to make sure other woman learn how to fall back in love with life, just like she has.

FINDING INNER HAPPINESS Years ago, Taylor Stone seemed like she was living a blessed life. She was thin, beautiful and surrounded by amazing friends. She had been both an Arizona Cardinals and Washington Redskins cheerleader. But secretly, she knew something was wrong.

“When I was in my late teens, early twenties, all I cared about was how I looked on the outside,” Stone says. “I paid very little attention to the consequences of what was being done internally to my organs, hormones and overall unhealthy value of the aesthetics.”

Stone, like many women, was careful to watch her weight. She would obsessively track her calories and food portioning on a daily basis. Her dancing and cheerleading career was strenuous on her body and required more calories than she was taking in to recuperate.

“I wasn’t healthy physically, and my emotional well-being became unstable because of it,” she recalls. “I taxed my body so much that I started developing hormonal issues that come along with lack of nutrients. I knew I had to make

a change. My focus was too much on my body and not enough on my emotional and mental well-being, which should always come first.”

It was a wake-up call to Stone, one that she would take on with her typical passion and verve for life.

Stone started listening to her body and began eating more intuitively, asking herself daily what her body needed. She stopped counting calories and started thinking of food differently.

“Today, I wake up feeling nourished on a mind, body, and soul level and it’s because I don’t restrict myself anymore.

We need to realize that every single body is different and we need to start listening to what our individual bodies need.

Emotional well-being is so much more

Whether it’s her podcast or personal consulting service, Stone loves sharing advice on staying grounded and finding joy in life.

You can’t find out what your soul truly wants if you are constantly inundated with external noise,” She says. “Also, set boundaries and audit your circle of friends. Make sure that those you surround yourself with are adding to your life and not depleting your energy.”

“I truly love helping other women step into joy and live the life they have always wanted to create, but still have some limiting beliefs around it,” Stone says. “My intention is to help heal and raise the vibration of the world and help to change as many lives as I can.”

1. Stay Hydrated The skin on your lips is more sensitive to dehydration than other parts of your face, and if you are dehydrated, it will show. Try to find a lip gloss that has an SPF of 30 or higher and reapply several times per day. Even if you work inside, wear a good SPF as the sun can damage your lips even through a window or driving in your car.

3. Use Hyaluronic Acid Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance that adds moisture, volume, and shine to your lips. There are several lip gloss brands that contain HA, and regular use of these products can actually increase the volume in your lips. You might have a slight tingle from the product at first, and after a few days will have full, hydrated lips. Upping the Cadence The key to picking up speed

Very rarely is there a free and simple way in endurance sports to get faster, but for 95 percent of athletes, there may be one solution. In both cycling and running, most competitors can pick up some speed and endurance through simply increasing cadence. On the bicycle, this is usually called rotations per minute, or RPM. In running, it’s often referred to as your strikerate. It’s a common belief that to go faster when running, you should reach further and take bigger strides. When it comes to cycling, you increase speed by putting the bike in a bigger gear and pushing harder. This is only true to a point, and usually leaves you exhausted in a relatively short period of the time.

In longer applications like endurance racing, or anything over just a few minutes, maintaining a given speed becomes more of a factor over time. To do this, you need to increase your cadence or RPMs on the bike, and take smaller, lighter steps while running. Start thinking of this activity as breaking down the total amount of work into smaller pieces rather than trying to do it all at once. As an added benefit, the toll that the activity takes on your body is less with a higher cadence as muscular

strain is reduced as is overall impact.

How do you apply this to training and racing? On your exercise bike or outdoor bicycle, look at the RPM number regularly. Shoot for at least 90 rotations per minute for most of your riding time, when counting the circles of one leg. If you wish to go easier, shift into an easier gear, but always shoot for that golden 90-plus RPM number. Interestingly, the same number works for running, or around 90 foot strikes total per minute, per foot. A good place to start is to count your total foot strikes on a treadmill, and then try to increase them by five per leg each minute, by reaching less and focusing a lot on being light on your feet. Again, when practicing both applications, your speed shouldn’t change, just the number of cycles that your legs go through. It takes some focused work and getting used to, and in fact most people actually slow down a bit before they realize the speed benefit. If you apply yourself to increasing cadence over time, you’ll find yourself running and riding longer and faster with your legs recovering quicker, allowing for greater success.
