ed note / February 2020

February is known as the month of love, but for those that have been going full steam ahead to reach their 2020 goals, it’s also a stressful time. Those strict resolutions you set could be going great, or the motivation may be wearing off. My advice? Keep going – you can do it! We have some articles that may be the key for those that need a little boost to stick to their new healthy eating lifestyle or serve as extra motivation to continue putting those sneakers on in the mornings and getting to the gym. Try introducing mindfulness into your daily routine (page 28), which may keep you balanced and focused on what you’re trying to achieve. We also have a fourminute (yep, you read that right!) aerobic finisher to your workout using speed balls (page 26). For those who have been struck by Cupid’s arrow, we have eight crazy health benefits of kissing (page 38), spices that improve heart health (page 30), and a recipe for avocado chocolate mousse for two (page 18). It’s a well-known saying that in order to give love to someone else, you have to love yourself first. Our cover feature Jason Rosell applied that theory to his career. He was able to transform his health after being overweight for more than 20 years and now he’s helping others – as he calls it – “renovate their lives.” We talked to him about his road to becoming the mega TV personality, author, podcast host, and businessowner he is today (page 40). Some other exciting highlights in this month’s issue include athletic styles inspired by the past (page 20), five tests to get for health insight (page 16), and the lowdown on domestic violence, including signs to look for (page 25). Whether you’re still going strong on your resolutions or have your sights set on new goals for the month, keep believing in your mission and don’t forget to have some fun while you do it. Points For Plant Based

/ complied by Kelly Potts

Going plant based may be good for your insides, according to researchers from UT Southwestern. During an experiment, they determined that mice fed a plantbased diet were less susceptible to gastrointestinal (GI) infection from an E. coli pathogen known as EHEC. The researchers specifically found that plant-rich diets are high in pectin, a gel-like substance found in many fruits and vegetables. Pectin is digested by the gut microbiota into galacturonic acid, which can inhibit the virulence of EHEC. Eat more plants, and protect your guts … literally. Source: www.sciencedaily.com.

Lower Rank, Better Health Finally, being out of the top 10 is a good thing. Apartment Guide released a study naming the top 10 worst states for the flu. Arizona ranked at No. 16 on the list, but neighboring New Mexico came in at number 10. To determine the worst states for the flu, Apartment Guide looked at flu season numbers over the

past six years from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control during February — generally considered to be peak flu season — as well as the average cost of a visit to the doctor and the average price of a bottle of prescription Ibuprofen to get a bigger picture of where the flu hits hardest, both your wallet and your immune system.

Burn Fat Before Breakfast The debate has raged on for years – does it really matter when you work out? According to a study from the UK, the answer is yes, it does matter. Their published research states that working out before breakfast burned more fat. They looked at data from 30 obese or overweight men, and the men who exercised before breakfast burned twice the fat as men who ate breakfast before they worked out. The cause? According to the scientists, exercising with no fuel forces the body to turn to stored carbs, and when those are quickly gone, the body will turn to fat cells. Source: www.cnn. com.

Fasting for Longevity It may be more than just a trend – a new study shows that intermittent fasting can actually add years onto your life and help you lose weight. The study, conducted by researchers at Johns Hopkins University, reported that this may help improve the body’s metabolism, and it has been linked with decreased blood pressure, cholesterol and resting heart rates. Intermittent fasting involves either limiting eating to an eight-hour window, or not eating for two days a week. Source: www.foxnews.com.

The Helper’s High Looking to keep the pain at bay? Volunteer. A study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reported that regions of the brain that react to painful stimulation appear to be instantly deactivated by the experience of giving. Study subjects who reported feeling pain declared a significant reduction in pain after volunteering or giving back to others. The researchers called this a “helper’s high”, and suggested it could help people feel less pain in certain situations. Source: www.cnn. com.

Man’s Best Medicine We all know the saying “dogs are a man’s best friend.” In addition to offering companionship and unaltering loyalty, it turns out dogs offer just a little bit more to their owners. Johns Hopkins Medicine researchers recently suggested that being around man’s best friend from an early age may have a health benefit as well, lessening the chance of developing schizophrenia as an adult. While the study that led to this finding did show a link between dogs and schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, there has been no link (positive or negative) between these disorders and owning cats.

Pollution and Your Internal Clock There have been several studies on the effects of high pollution and your health, but can the same be said about light pollution? An international team of researchers from Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries analyzed data on the impact of light pollution on melatonin formation. They found that even the low light intensities of urban skyglow can suppress melatonin production, which sets your internal clock. This means even the lightest amount of pollution can disrupt your melatonin and sleep levels. Source: www. medicalnewstoday.com.

Mindfulness and Blood Pressure Think your way into better health. Researchers published a new study in the journal PLOS One describing evidence that meditation and mindfulness training may be able to reduce high blood pressure and hypertension. Participants who enrolled in the Mindfulness-Based Blood Pressure Reduction program experienced significant reductions in blood pressure levels that were still in effect at follow-up examinations one year after the trial. 5 Tests for Health Insight About 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail by February. Often, people neglect to set attainable goals and lose interest when results don’t show. Instead – before jumping into a new exercise or diet routine – begin by evaluating the status of your health. Whether you’ve already hit your February slump or are just getting started, take a look at our top five most essential tests and rekindle your motivation for creating a healthier life.

Mammograms 3D mammography is one of the most advanced and powerful breast screening technologies available. Like traditional mammography, 3D mammography uses X-rays to take images of the breast. Differing from traditional mammography, 3D mammography captures more images of the breast, from multiple angles, and is more effective for women with dense breasts. Breast screening recommendations suggest receiving yearly mammograms as early as 40 years old. Women should become familiar with the shape and feeling of their breasts by doing self-exams in the shower once a month prior to receiving their first mammogram. This familiarity will help determine whether changes in the breast tissue are normal or if it is something that requires professional examination. Colonoscopies People of average risk should start regular screenings for colon cancer at age 45. If the colonoscopy shows no signs of cancer you should have another exam in 10 years. For those uninterested in traditional colonoscopy, virtual colonoscopy is the ideal substitution. Virtual colonoscopy is a minimally

invasive exam to screen for cancer of the large intestine. The scan uses an X-ray to produces hundreds of images of the abdominal organs. This 3D CT scan uses the latest procedures and software to minimize radiation and create the sharpest images. DEXA scans This test is an FDAapproved technology used to quantify lean, fat and bone mass. DEXA scans are a quick and simple test used primarily to screen for osteoporosis, a condition in which the density and quality of bone diminishes, increasing the risk of serious fracture. Anyone can develop osteoporosis, but it’s particularly common in older women. Testing involves a quick and simple scan – lasting only 10 minutes. Fatty Liver MRE Traditional methods for detecting alcoholic fatty liver disease (ALFD) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), like liver biopsy and ultrasound, are associated with numerous limitations including subjective interpretation, sampling error, high cost, risk of complications, and patient reluctance. Instead try Siemens Magentom VIDA 3T MRI scan, currently only available in Arizona. VIDA 3T

MRI is the most technically reliable tool for detecting fibrosis, or scarring of the liver, caused by fatty liver disease and other chronic liver diseases. If left untreated, fatty liver disease can progress into steatohepatitis, with scarring, also known as fibrosis, visible in the liver. Fibrosis can lead to severe, irreversible scarring (cirrhosis) and possibly liver cancer. Everyone has the potential to get fatty liver disease, but the leading causes of the condition are poor diet, obesity and excessive alcohol consumption. Brain Imaging If you are 65 years and older, or have a history of Alzheimer’s disease in your family, think proactively and start assessing your risk for Alzheimer’s with NeuroQuant AI. NeuroQuant AI compares the MRI of your brain to a reference database of people with the same age and gender. The percentile ranking of your brain provides you and your physician an early warning for the development of mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease. Being aware of your potential for this disease gives you the time to act preventively and mitigate symptoms as much as possible.

PINHOLE SURGICAL TECHNIQUE:

A revolutionary new way to achieve your best smile! BEFORE A University Study revealed that 89% of patients over 20 years old have gingival recession. Receding gums can be caused by gum disease or because of excessive brushing, certain medications, clenching or grinding, or smoking. Not only are receding gums painful and unattractive, but the actual bone underneath is being lost, leading to tooth loss. The Pinhole Surgical Technique is a revolutionary procedure that solves the problem of receding gums. PST offers natural-looking, long-lasting healthy smiles to those suffering from receded gums, giving patients a beautiful new smile in as little as an hour. Since nothing more than local anesthesia is needed, patients can return to work after their appointment. The Pinhole Surgical Technique takes the place of traditional gum grafts, with minimal discomfort or pain. In fact, recovery time is virtually nonexistent with PST. The results are more predictable, less noticeable, and will last as long as any other gum correction procedure. Stunning new smiles can be seen immediately. Dr. Erik Svans, DDS was among the first dentists to study the Pinhole Surgical Technique under its inventor, Dr. John C. Chao, DDS in 2014. Since introducing

AFTER PST to his practice, Dr. Svans has seen very predictable and reliable long-term results. There is no scalpel, incision, or stitches with PST, making it virtually painfree. This innovative procedure uses a .1 inch “pinhole” opening to reposition a patient’s receded gumline to its healthy, natural location. After repositioning the gum tissue to cover the exposed root surface, Dr. Svans strategically places collagen through the Pinhole to stabilize the tissue in place. The collagen resets the gum tissue and makes it stronger than before. Patients can return to normal eating that very night.

BEFORE

Previously, treatment for receded gumlines was very painful and required cutting donor gum tissue from the roof of a patient’s mouth. The donor tissue was then stitched to the receded site, which had also been cut or “flapped” in preparation for the graft. Recovery for this traditional surgical technique requires two to three weeks with prescription pain medicine. In contrast, PST is a kinder, gentler procedure since it only requires a repositioning of existing gum tissue over the exposed root surface. With PST, Dr. Svans can treat one to all teeth in one visit, in as little as 30 minutes. Patients are amazed with the results, instantly falling in love with their healthy, beautiful new smiles. If you’re ready to stop living with the pain and embarrassment of recessed gums, the Pinhole Surgical Technique may be right for you! Three Common Points Short Circuit Food impulsivity may be blamed on a specific circuit in the brain, according to researchers from the University of Georgia. Through their studies, they identified a specific circuit in the brain that alters food impulsivity, creating the possibility scientists can someday develop therapeutics to address overeating. The researchers are using these findings to see if there is a way to alter this circuit to help individuals stop overeating and lose weight.

Food headlines are confusing, and contradicting. One day eggs are bad for you, the next day they are the key to success. Don’t eat red meat but enjoy it in moderation. Who can keep up with the suggestions? Research shows there are a few things we can agree on:

Source: www.sciencedaily.com.

1. Eat your plants. When you eat a diet rich in plants, you open the door to a whole load of health benefits including include lower blood pressure, triglyceride levels, glucose and waist circumference. 2. Reduce processed meats. The more processed a meat is, the worse it is for your

health. Eat them in moderation and double up on your greens. 3. Healthy fats and carbs are key. Despite the negative connotation with the word, don’t avoid fats! Enjoy healthy fats and carbs in your meals for a wellbalanced diet. Source: www. nbcnews.com.

So Long, Sugar Health care centers throughout the US have been banning sugary drinks from their facilities for the last few years. Up until now, there have been no indications if the bans were helpful or hurtful. A study conducted by the University of California, San Francisco, documented the health impact of a soda sales ban on its employees. Nearly 10 months after a sales ban went into effect, employees who tended to drink a lot of sugary beverages had cut their daily intake by about half. By the end of the study period, the group reduced their waist sizes and belly fat. Those who cut back on sugary beverages also tended to see improvements in insulin resistance, a risk factor for Type 2 diabetes. Perhaps with further studies, more consumers will rethink their sugary drinks. Source: www. nytimes.com.

All About the Diet When it comes to losing weight, the advice is simple: eat less. Researchers at Baylor University looked at the way children and adults “spend” their calories and their effect on respective waistlines. During their study, when exercise amounts were the same, it all came down to how many calories were consumed throughout the day. Participants who consumed more calories were more likely to be overweight than those who consumed less calories. In this study, exercise did not factor into the study as the key is how much one consumes. Source: www.sciencedaily.com.

Speed Ball Finisher Four aerobic movements to mix things up

Now that January has come and gone, it’s imperative not to let those 2020 goals fall by the wayside. If your routine is already feeling like it’s getting stale, switch up your aerobic work next time you hit the gym by incorporating this routine. All you need is a light medicine ball, a wall and a little sweat equity to burn some serious fat. You’ll complete one minute of each exercise in the four-exercise circuit.

Split Squat Hold & Pass both right and left legs Assume the standing 90/90 position with the legs. The heel of the back foot should be raised as most if your weight is pressing through your front heel as this is your work leg. The key here is keeping your back shin parallel to the floor. Keep your torso upright, simply passing as quickly as you can handle for one minute in this position then switch legs and repeat the pattern.

Rotational Pass (both right and left legs) Start by standing tall up top with the feet about shoulder width apart. Simply move the ball in a full circle rotational pattern from hip to overhead before releasing the pass into the wall for one straight minute.

Froggers With your hands on the ball assume the pushup position in one stiff line from your head to your heels. Then, hop your feet forward to match your hand distance on the ball, holding for a split second before firing back to your original pushup position. Repeat for max reps in one minute.

Granny Pass Assume a deep squat stance with your hands on the ball and as you begin to rise up from this position, toss the ball underhand into the wall. Catch the ball return as you return back to the deep squat position.

Mindfulness for Mental Health How to embrace the practice by living in the present

28

ScottsdaleHealth

02/20

Mental health is by far one of the most prominent concerns to us as a society. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the United States, affecting 40 million adults age 18 or older every year. Major depressive disorder affects more than 16.1 million American adults age 18 or older every year as well. The American Addiction Centers report that in 2017, 8.5 million American adults suffered from a mental health disorder and a substance use disorder, or co-occurring disorders. With that being said, one of the most effective interventions for these conditions are mindfulness practices. Mindfulness practices seek to change the relationship between the person and his or her thought patterns. In mindfulness practices, the person experiencing symptoms like the above focuses on the internal sensations that arise when triggered. Instead of avoiding feelings, the goal of mindfulness practice is to remain present and fully experience the feeling in that moment, with acceptance, compassion, and openness. Instead of allowing the feelings to take the person’s thoughts over, the objective is to realize and acknowledge that the thoughts they are having in that present moment are not true. When this realization occurs, it retrains the brain, allowing the person to move away from the undesired automatic response and move closer to a new way of being.

INCORPORATING THE PRACTICE Now, how can we start practicing mindfulness? Where do we start? What do we do? We don’t have to live in a monastery in the mountain or transform into a yogi levitating on a rock to be mindful. Being mindful starts with setting an intention to commit to the practices in efforts to enhance our awareness and elevate our state of being. One of the most common mindfulness practices that we can start with is meditation. There are several types of meditation, depending on the intention. This can include concentration, mindfulness, compassion, and movement-based meditations. In essence, meditation is an approach to training the mind, similar to the way we train our bodies during physical exercise. Meditation encourages us to focus on a single point, commonly referred to as an “anchor.” This can be focusing on our breath, visualization, a word or mantra, observing our surroundings, or counting. During this time of focus, meditation encourages us to also observe the wandering thoughts of our mind. The intention here is to observe our wandering thoughts, rather than obsess or judge them harshly. Over time, we will start to notice that our thoughts move in very similar patterns, thus bringing up very similar feelings time and time again. With consistency, we can build awareness of our thoughts and feelings that seem to be recurring. It is important to remember when starting a meditation practice to be compassionate towards ourselves during this process, as it takes time to train our mind, just like it takes time to see results in the gym. By being consistent with our efforts, we will find that things will start to change in subtle ways when things that used to bother us no longer challenge us. To start your meditation practice, begin by creating time and space anytime in your day, even if it’s only a few minutes per day. Once you can create a consistent practice, then slowly increase your time spent in meditation as you find yourself being able to be still for longer periods over time.

Sweet Heart Health Spice things up this Valentine’s Day

Looking for ways to spice things up with your loved one this Valentine’s Day? Skip the mini chocolate hearts and red roses. If you really want to show them (and their hearts) some love, get them a spice rack! Research shows that certain spices – made from the seeds, berries, bark, or roots of plants – contain health-boosting compounds that can help lower cholesterol, boost antioxidant levels, provide heart-healthy minerals, and more. Adding these spices to meals this Valentine’s Day will also add delicious flavor and can make it easier to cut back on less healthy ingredients like salt, sugar, and added fat.

Cinnamon Cinnamon is made by cutting the stems off a cinnamon tree, then extracting and drying the inner bark. The inner bark contains a high concentration of cinnamaldehyde, which is responsible for many of the health benefits of cinnamon. Studies show that consuming cinnamon daily helps lower triglycerides, cholesterol, and blood sugar--the trifecta of symptoms that affect heart health. Aim for 1 to 2 grams of cinnamon per day, or about a teaspoon. TIP: Show your sweetheart you care by adding cinnamon to their morning hot beverage (tea or coffee). As a bonus benefit, it’s low in calories and sugar-free so you can both enjoy a flavorful cup of joe without the guilt.

Turmeric Turmeric is an Indian spice known for its yellow color and anti-inflammatory benefits. The star component of turmeric is an antioxidant called curcumin. Many forms of illness can be attributed to chronic inflammation, including cardiovascular disease. As a powerful antioxidant, curcumin can help the body neutralize oxidative stress and give it the tools to better manage inflammation. Tip: For your Valentine’s Day dinner, try seasoning roasted veggies with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of turmeric. Any veggie will do — broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, carrots, etc.

Garlic Garlic is a staple in the Mediterranean diet, which has been praised for its ability to support heart health, brain health, and longevity in general. Eating one clove of garlic per day can help lower cholesterol and support healthy blood pressure. Note that to get the benefits, you must chop or crush the clove: Allicin, the compound in garlic that makes it so healthy, is formed only after the cells in the garlic have been cut or crushed. Tip: Head out on a picnic with your valentine and bring along a homemade salad dressing that includes fresh chopped garlic, olive oil, red wine vinegar, Dijon mustard, and black pepper.

Cardamom Cardamom is a sweet, pungent spice most notably found in pumpkin spice mixes. It’s been used to ease an upset stomach and some studies show that it’s an effective antioxidant. Compared to other spices, it’s especially high in minerals like magnesium and zinc, both of which are important for heart health. Tip: Treat your partner to a hearthealthy breakfast in bed by adding ground cardamom to a warm bowl of oatmeal. You can add in some heart-loving cinnamon too! Enjoy getting spicy this Valentine’s Day! Your sweetHEART will thank you for it.

MORE WAYS TO SHOW YOUR HEART SOME LOVE Get the recommended 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night. Limit alcohol to no more than 1 to 2 drinks per day. At minimum, eat the recommended amount of vegetables per day (2 to 3 cups). Ditch cigarettes-real and electronic.

1 tablespoon tomato paste 1 cup low-sodium vegetable broth ½ teaspoon ground coriander ½ teaspoon ground cumin ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon Himalayan pink salt ½ teaspoon black pepper MEDMEX TOMATO SAUCE 2 tablespoons tomato paste plus 1½ cup low-sodium vegetable broth 1 teaspoon raw coconut oil, room temperature ½ teaspoon black pepper

Medmex Stuffed Peppers Recipe from Eat Like You Give a Fork: The Real Dish on Eating to Thrive by Mareya Ibrahim

½ teaspoon Himalayan pink salt TOPPING

Makes 6 to 8 servings STUFFED PEPPERS

2 garlic cloves, crushed

turkey or chicken (see Notes)

6 large bell peppers

1 shallot, finely minced

½ cup quinoa, rinsed

1 pound ground

1 cup lentils, rinsed

2 tablespoons raw coconut oil

½ teaspoon chipotle chili flakes

2 tablespoons crumbled sheep’smilk feta cheese 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon minced fresh dill or parsley (optional)

Preheat the oven to 400°F. To prepare the peppers and filling: Cut the top ½ inch off each bell pepper and remove the seeds and ribs. Set the peppers and their tops aside. In a large nonstick skillet, melt the coconut oil over medium heat. Add the garlic and shallot and cook, stirring, until translucent, 3 to 4 minutes. Add the ground turkey, quinoa, lentils, tomato paste, broth, coriander, cumin, cinnamon, salt, and black pepper. Cook the filling until most of the liquid has been absorbed, 15 to 20 minutes. To make the medmex sauce: Meanwhile, in a separate medium saucepan, whisk together all the ingredients for the MedMex sauce until smooth. Bring to a simmer over low heat and cook until reduced by about half, about 12–15 minutes. Stand the peppers upright in an 8-inch baking dish. Spoon the filling into the peppers, filling them three-quarters full, and place the tops back on. Cover with aluminum foil and bake until the filling is thoroughly cooked, 25 to 30 minutes. Spoon the MedMex sauce over the top and finish by sprinkling evenly with the feta. Garnish with dill or parsley, if desired, and serve. Note: For a vegan swap, replace the ground turkey with tempeh or increase the quinoa to 1 cup. You can also slice the peppers in half lengthwise into boats and fill them.

crazy 8s

Around Valentine’s Day, couples tend to ramp up the romance, whether it’s with an extra date night, thoughtful gifts or – you guessed it – puckering up for some smooches. Beyond it being a fun way to connect with your partner, did you know that philematology, better known as the study of kissing, has proven that puckering up leads to health benefits? Here are some to consider.

Crazy Health Benefits of Kissing 38

ScottsdaleHealth

02/20

1. Mouth workout. Did you know that kissing can help you get in shape? According to the American Journal of Medicine, one minute of kissing can burn 2 to 26 calories, depending on how passionate it is.

5. Natural vaccination. Exposing yourself to someone else’s germs while kissing could lead to a boost in your immunity system and prevent illness, according to nonprofit Get Checked 4 Life.

2. Building strength. A full makeout session activates 23 to 34 facial muscles and 112 postural muscles.

6. Ticker task. Kissing gets your heart rate up and lowers levels of cortisol stress hormone, helping to lower blood pressure.

3. Goodbye, cavities. Researchers from the Academy of General Dentistry and Mayo Clinic have reported that swapping spit via kissing has the same effect as mouth wash, washing away bacteria and breaking down oral plaque.

7. Pain reliever. According to research published in the medical journal PLoS One, kissing can relieve pain, thanks to the natural feel-good chemicals it releases.

4. Happy kissing! Kissing releases the levels of oxytocin, a “cuddle hormone” and increases endorphins and dopamine, which make you happy.

8. Kiss more, live longer. A German study found that men who smooched their significant others every morning live an average of five years longer, miss less work due to illness, and have a lower chance of being in a car accident on the way to work

THE EFFECTIVE MEDICAL MASSAGE: MYOFASCIAL THERAPY

Dr. Bryan Geier talks a new treatment for pain management Wouldn’t it be great if you could treat the majority of all pain related symptoms with a non-invasive approach? Now, you can. As a Chiropractor, my education and training was focused on relieving pain by influencing the nervous system through the use of spinal manipulation. However, in my practice I intently focus on the myo, which is the Latin term for muscles and connective tissue called fascia. Here in lies the term Myofascial therapy. When treating pain, I chose to focus on the myofascia of the body because this is the most important component to influencing the Central Nervous System to decrease pain, specifically honing in on treating this pain by taking an alternative, non-invasive approach. Unfortunately, myofascial therapy receives little attention as a major source of pain and is seldom taught in modern medical school training. Even more unfortunate is the lack of insurance reimbursement for this important therapy. So, let’s dig into the topic a little deeper.

running through, around and crisscrossing every inch of your body including muscle, organs, blood vessels, nerves, spinal cord, brain and skin. The central nervous system receives its greatest amount of sensory nerves from myofascial tissue. This means that the fascia is as important or more important than muscle in sensory input delivery. The key to this statement is that your myofascia becomes the byproduct of your environment without you even realizing it. It experiences stress, memorizes chronic poor posture, feels the weight of your head sitting at the computer all day, and permanently holds onto old untreated injuries. As a result of never ending signaling to the brain, the body develops symptoms like pain and endocrine dysfunction like adrenal fatigue, dysfunctional mood and brain fog, to name a few. If the fascia controls the information that can influence the brain, then this is the first step to calming down the body’s pain response and also improving overall global body function.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND PAIN AND MYOFASCIA The muscular system is the largest sensory organ. Approximately 50 percent of your body weight is made up of about 400 skeletal muscles. Your fascia is actually one giant interconnected web of connective tissue

WHAT IS MYOFASCIAL THERAPY? It is a deep tissue treatment involving the breakdown of fascial adhesions known as trigger points. These trigger points ultimately create a permanently shortened muscle, resulting in pain and muscle dysfunction and, in turn, weakness and uncoordinated movements. Myofascial therapy can be performed in many ways including by a practitioner’s hands, using tools that break down adhesions and stretching. This therapy proves to be a very efficient and effective therapy for pain management, improving athletic performance and reducing cellulite.

COMMON INJURIES RELATED TO MYOFASCIAL TRIGGER POINTS • Pain or stiffness in your neck, mid- or lowback • Headaches or jaw pain • Sciatica and other nerve related symptoms like numbness and tingling • Tendonitis, Bursitis and Plantar Fasciitis • Joint pain especially in your shoulder, knee or wrist • Generalized dull, achy pain • Athletic performance issues

HOW DOES HEALTHY FASCIA BECOME UNHEALTHY FASCIA? This happens when extra layers of fascia grow due to stress, trauma, repetitive motions, dehydration and inflammation. Inflammation comes from repetitive working out or even eating inflammatory foods such as (but not limited to) sugar, fried food, certain oils and processed wheat.

Television personality, wellness and relationship coach, author and founder of Caliente Fitness Jason Rosell gained a new understanding of “caliente” after recently relocating from Los Angeles to Scottsdale. Rosell, who lived in the City of Angels for 13 years and before that spent time in New York, Florida and Spain, is excited to finally be a resident of State 48...despite the so-called “dry heat.” “Scottsdale has impressed me in many ways, and I’m just so happy to make it my home,” he says. As a self-proclaimed “life renovator” — someone who helps transforms all aspects of an individual’s life for the better — of 15-plus years, Rosell has made quite a mark in the wellness industry. He has appeared on a variety of shows throughout his TV career, including ABC’s All My Children, Hallmark’s Home & Family, Jillian Michaels’ reality competition, Sweat Inc., and The Steve Harvey Show. He will continue to make TV appearances, flying around the globe to film and further his impact with new endeavors but is making Scottsdale his home base. “I feel very at peace and relaxed here versus the nonstop insanity of loud and busy L.A.,” he says. “Plus, it’s a beautiful place!” Though now a success story, hoping to further his impact by pursuing new endeavors this year, Rosell went through a transformation himself, which is at the core of what drives him to help others. The Wake-Up Call Rosell has dual citizenship in the United States and Spain. He was born in Queens, New York, but moved with his parents to their home country, Spain, when he was 9 to attend bilingual school. “That’s where I learned how to read, write and speak Spanish fluently. It’s my first language,” Rosell says. Growing up, he was a silly and carefree, but well-behaved, kid. Rosell was always laughing and cracking jokes

to get others to laugh with him. From an outsider’s perspective, he was a happy youth. However, it was a different story on the inside. Rosell was relentlessly bullied for being an overweight Spanish kid with an American name. “I was unhappy, an underachiever and obese for more than 20 years of my life,” he says. One day when Rosell was in his 20s, he woke up and said that’s enough — enough of the negative self-talk, enough of the insecurities and enough of always being tired and sluggish. That was the moment he made a profound commitment to change his life through diet and exercise. By combining small but effective workouts with his love of music and eating healthy, Rosell lost a whopping 75 pounds. In addition to becoming healthier

“My Sexercise Workout program is a pure fun and helps women and men get their sexy back. I even created the program’s music track and workout music video,” he says. Rosell also conducts one-on-one coaching sessions with his clients via the phone, skype and in person at their offices or homes. Instead of just targeting one problem area in his clients’ lives, he tackles it all through his holistic method, from relationship and life advice to fitness and nutrition guidance. “I really get to know each one of my clients by understanding what their purpose and passions are in life. From there, I create the ultimate lifestyle plan that includes food, fitness and mind exercises that is custom to them and fun,” he says. Mind exercises are extremely

delicious and healthy recipes. “The recipes in my book are the exact ones that not only helped me lose weight but maintain my weight loss for many years,” Rosell says. Looking Back and Ahead With 2020 well underway, Rosell has been quick to check off goals he wants to achieve for his brand, one being his podcast and YouTube show, Get Inspired with Jason Rosell. In each episode, available on iTunes, Spotify, Google and all podcast platforms, Rosell shares his expertise on weight loss, relationships, balance and retraining the mind. Season one launched at the end of 2019 and season two dropped this month. He also has plans to write another weight-loss book, release more music,

I have tough days just like anyone else, but I trained my mindset and now love waking up and going to bed spreading the power of positive vibes. You just always have to keep it caliente, baby!” and stronger, he discovered a new passion and career path. “A lot of people didn’t believe that I was obese after I lost all the weight. They wanted to know how I dramatically transformed, so I created Caliente Fitness to show them that they can change, too,” Rosell says. Breaking into the Wellness World Rosell received notoriety in the wellness industry after establishing Caliente Fitness in 2010 — only five years after getting serious about his own health. Caliente Fitness isn’t your standard workout program, it’s a high-energy fusion of music, dance and versatile workout routines that are meant to be fun and effective. Caliente Fitness is comprised of three different digital download workout DVDs, which include: Everybody Work It Out, Caliente Body Series and Sexercise Workout. Rosell’s favorite is the latter.

important to Rosell and what separates him from other fitness professionals. According to the trainer, change happened for him because he rewired his mindset. In order to renovate his clients’ lifestyles and empower them to reach their goals, helping them think differently his first step. “Most people are held back by their thoughts because they have this blueprint in their mind of how life should be. This blueprint is an enabler,” he says. “Once we realize that we are not our mind and that our mind does not control us, we become unleashed from whatever is holding us back from reaching our highest potential.” The TV personality and life renovator has also penned three books. He wrote Yummy Healthy Dinners, a No. 1 bestseller on Amazon, for people who want to eat healthy but are too tired or don’t have the time to create meals on their own. The book features hundreds of quick,

create new fitness programs and make plenty of TV appearances. Plus, now that he’s local, he will start to do all in-person trainings at Off The Grid Fitness (www. offthegridfitness.com), Arizona’s first ecofriendly gym. As with any job, moments of stress and temporary loss of focus happen. Whenever Rosell finds himself in this situation, he recalls how far he’s come, how many lives he’s helped transform – which is tens of thousands – and how much he loves what he’s doing for a living. “I always tell people that no one is born happy, and that you have to take actions daily to create happiness in your life. I have tough days just like anyone else, but I trained my mindset and now love waking up and going to bed spreading the power of positive vibes.” Rosell says. “You just always have to keep it caliente, baby!” To learn more about Rosell, visit www.jasonrosell.com.

Lifelong Phoenix Suns fan Alicia-Monique Blanco entertains crowds as the team’s in-arena host

From cheering on the Phoenix Suns from the nosebleeds at the then-America West Arena with her dad as a young girl to becoming the team’s in-arena host at the nowTalking Stick Resort Arena, Arizona native Alicia-Monique Blanco has come a long way. Here we talked to Blanco about the road to her current role, her connection to the team, and her close-knit relationship with her family. Tell us about your role with the Phoenix Suns. As the in-arena host, it’s my job to keep the fans entertained during breaks in the game. Whether it’s a timeout, quarter break or halftime, you can see me all over the arena alongside other members of the Suns Entertainment team interacting with the fans and keeping them engaged. They are my number one priority! It’s very important to me that they feel seen, heard and almost like they are on the court with me. What is the energy like in the arena during games this season? WOW this season has been electric! The last time I saw and “felt” it like this about the Suns, was back in the ‘90s. People are energetic, tuned in and have a lot of hope. The games are just so exciting and our fans have a lot to cheer for this season. What is your favorite part of your role with the Suns? The fans and the people I get to work with! I love meeting the die-hard Suns fans and seeing them at all the games. The people I work with have honestly felt like family to me since day one. I always look forward to going to work because of both! Any fun pre-game rituals you can share with us? I love picking out a good outfit for the game. From the clothes to the shoes, the NBA has changed my style and it’s been so much fun embracing the culture! Before the games I always try on various outfits and try out different looks and styles. Then, I text my little cousin who is way cooler than me, to make sure my outfit is “good to go.” She has to approve or else I keep trying. This has become a fun part of the job. I love including my family! How did you get your start in hosting? In college I interned at ABC15 KNXV-TV News and Sports. That was when I got my first taste of being up close to the action at the Suns games during the unforgettable Steve Nash, Shawn Marion, Raja Bell, Amar’e Stoudemire era. Soon after college, I moved out to LA and got as much red carpet and oncamera entertainment hosting experience as I could, and the rest is history.

Tell us about your life growing up in Arizona. It was simply the best. Even when I moved to California in my early 20s, I always knew I’d end up back here. The majority of my family is here and every year keeps getting better and better. My family is a lot like My Big Fat Greek Wedding except we are Latinos. Loud, fun, never a dull day, and there’s always food. Lots and lots of food! My parents were really good about documenting every stage of childhood on my dad’s huge camera back in the day, and as a result we have an endless supply of VHS tapes of playtime, holidays, vacations and just hanging out around the house. I get emotional every time I re-watch any of them (which is often) because it’s just so clear how much love has always been in my life. And hilarious chaos. We have it on good authority you’ve been a Suns fan since you were young. Can you elaborate on that? This is a fact! I was born and raised a Suns fan. My parents would take my little sister and I to the games back when it was the America West Arena and when Charles Barkley and KJ were on the team (KJ was my first crush ever!). We would sit way up in the nosebleeds and just watch in amazement at all the action and dreamt of being up close one day. Even now, I actually borrow some of my mom’s shirts from the ‘90s and wear them to games! Were you interested in sports as a child? If not, how has that changed since you’ve gotten older? Sports was always on TV in our household. My dad and little sister especially bonded over that passion. My sister was dubbed as my dad’s “son,” because she actually understood the logistics of the game whereas I just watched for the entertainment and glamour of it all. It became a running joke in the family about all the silly questions I’d ask during the games because I didn’t always understand exactly what was happening, but still loved to watch. Even when I lived on my own, I’d often turn sports on my TV while I was working from home, just to have it on because it made me feel at home. The sound of a game was comforting. As I got older, sports continued to be present in our family

as I interned with ABC15 Sports and once my sister started working for Fox Sports Arizona, and eventually the Arizona Cardinals. It’s pretty cool to see how our childhood dreams and interests have grown into what they are today. Is this your full-time or part-time job? This is my part-time job as I only work the home games. I’m also a singer in The Hamptons Band where I get to sing for weddings and events across Arizona which is a lot of fun! I have my own business called The Lettering Latina (@theletteringlatina) that I’ve owned and operated since 2016 where I do hand-written lettering and calligraphy for weddings, baby showers, events, etc. Everything from place cards, welcome signs, seating charts, mirrors, acrylic...you name it! You were crowned Miss Arizona USA in 2009 and then competed at the 2009 Miss USA pageant. Tell us about your experience and if it has prepared you for your current role. It has been 11 years and it still gives me butterflies to think about! It’s an experience that gave me a lot of insight into the entertainment industry and gave me some pretty thick skin too. Long story short, I was dared into doing the pageant with no experience whatsoever. The stereotype that you have to be born and raised in it to do well is simply not true. Giving it a shot, putting yourself out there, having fun and working hard can always take you far! (I ended up placing second runner up at Miss USA!) I absolutely feel like it prepared me for this role with the Suns. I’ve hosted many things before but nothing quite like this. Again, I just needed to believe in myself, give it a shot, put myself out there, have fun, work hard and hope that it would lead me to a dream position- and it has. Also, for the pageant, it was a huge production on a stage, live on NBC in front of a lot of people watching. With the Suns, it’s also a live production, on the court with a lot of people watching. I just remind myself that if I could do it back then in my heels, then I can most certainly do it now, in my Jordans. What do you enjoy doing in your free time? What’s that? Just kidding… however, basketball season and wedding season are ironically during the same exact time, so there is little to no free time. I do enjoy working out and being with my family though, especially my baby nephew. He is the best little guy and whenever I have a chance to take a pause, it’s likely with him in my arms watching Mickey Mouse or Coco.

Giving Victims a Voice

Signs of domestic violence and how to help

Domestic Violence is a pattern of abusive and/or controlling behavior used to gain and maintain power and control over another person. It affects women and men and happens in every age, socioeconomic, religious, racial and ethnic group, in every part of our country and around the world.

Intimate Partner Violence While physical abuse is the most easily recognized, domestic violence is not always physical. Victims that suffer from Intimate Partner Violence suffer emotional, psychological and verbal abuse. In fact, these three types of abuse are present in virtually all cases of domestic violence and are often reported to be more damaging and difficult to heal from than physical abuse. Intimate Partner Violence can include sexual abuse, financial, technological and legal abuse, threats of physical harm, destruction of property and abuse of animals in the home. Domestic violence is one of the most underreported crimes and yet the numbers are staggering. In the United States alone, more than one in three women and one in four men have reported rape, physical violence and/or stalking by an intimate partner at some point in their lifetime. Arizona’s stats are higher than the national average with 43% of women and 33% of men reporting sexual and/ or physical violence as well as stalking by an intimate partner. In fact, based on these statistics alone, it’s likely that virtually everyone knows someone who has been affected by domestic violence…a friend, neighbor,

family member or even a co-worker. On September 13, 2018, during a one-day Domestic Violence Counts Census conducted annually by the National Network to End Domestic Violence, 74,823 victims were served in the United States. On that same day, Arizona assisted 1,846 victims of domestic violence. 1008 were served in a shelter setting while 837 of them were served through non-residential programs. Shelters are the preferred setting for those individuals at extreme risk of severe injury or death, while nonresidential community based services can provide all the same emotional support, lay legal advocacy and intensive case management assistance without the beds. Indications of Abuse Intimate Partner Violence is not always easy to recognize, since it is often about controlling someone’s mind and emotions as much as hurting their body. The signs may not be as obvious as a bruise, but it’s important to be aware of what some of the indicators might be. Even for those living in an abusive relationship, it can be difficult to recognize that what they are experiencing is abuse. Some common warning

signs of abuse may include: Jealousy Unpredictability (loving one minute and mean the next) Cruelty to animals Verbal abuse Extremely controlling behavior Antiquated beliefs about roles of women and men in relationships Forced sex or disregard of their partner’s unwillingness to have sex or to engage in certain sex acts Blaming the victim for anything bad that happens, including the abuse Sabotage or obstruction of the victim’s ability to work or attend school Controlling all finances Controlling what victim wears and how they act Embarrassment or humiliation of the victim in front of others If you are a victim, reach out for help. The Arizona Coalition To End Sexual and Domestic Violence Hotline is 1.800.782.6400. If you know someone who needs help, listen and be an advocate for them.

Mimi Kaplan is the Director of Jewish Family & Children’s Service Shelter Without Walls, a program that supports Maricopa County survivors of domestic violence and their children, who are residing outside of a shelter setting, and are struggling to attain and/or maintain safety and independence, whether or not still living with their abuser. dead cells that have built up.

Skin Shape Up Tips for before and after workouts

strengthen your skin’s ability to prevent and repair damage from pollution, sweat, and chemicals. Your multitasking moisturizer should contain vitamin C, cutting down on the number of products in your gym bag. Serums packed with additional minerals like Ferulic and vitamin E are worth their weight in gold.

If you are still getting after that New Year’s resolution to get your body in shape, then congratulations! Not everyone can keep up with their fitness commitments. Now is a great time to build on your success and optimize a part of you that you probably pay a little less attention to — your skin. With these few additions to your pre- and post-workout routine, your skin will be in top shape!

Hydrate and moisturize First, keep chugging water. Hydration is the foundation for both a superior workout and glowing skin. When you hydrate, you enable your cells to perform optimally, whether they are building muscle or skin. Drinking about

half your body weight in ounces every day will ensure that your skin retains elasticity, minimizing the appearance of wrinkles. On the outside, it also helps to apply a moisturizer at least twice a day. There are several multi-tasking moisturizers on the market that improve

your skin barrier, infuse vitamins, and add potent peptides that give your skin a boost. Add vitamin C If you are seriously committed to your workout, you probably make sure that you get enough vitamins. But when was the

last time you thought about Vitamin C for your skin? Vitamin C serums may seem like an extra and unnecessary step but are actually one of the best ways to reduce environmental stressors for your skin. A potent antioxidant, vitamin C applied topically will

Always cleanse Once you’ve finished your workout you may be tempted to take a quick shower and get on to the next part of your day. But please, please make sure you wash your face. Don’t just splash some water on it. Use a face wash with a light exfoliant, like glycolic acid, to help remove the sweat, dirt, and

Use retinoids Hopefully your arms won’t be too tired for a few evening healthy skin steps. Wash your face, again. Next, make sure that you use a retinoid serum. Just like you need protein to build muscle, you need retinoids to build healthy skin. These vitamin A derivatives help your cells turn over faster and increase the blood flow and collagen production in your skin. With the addition of a retinoid, your skin may look more vibrant and have less wrinkles and fine lines. Look for a skin cream that contains retinoids or purchase a retinol serum. Apply a few drops before bed and let the heavy lifter go to work. Lather sunscreen Lastly, no skin care routine is complete without sunscreen. If your workout takes you outside, in the pool, near a window, or involves breathing, then sunscreen is essential. UV A and B rays increase the speed of cellular degeneration. Sun exposure of any kind makes your skin look old faster. Choose a mineral sunscreen as these products contain fewer synthetic chemicals, form a physical barrier to the sun, and usually last longer than chemical sunscreens. Technology has improved so you won’t have that whitish tinge that was a byproduct of older mineral sunscreens.

It is no secret that America has an opioid epidemic, and when it comes to pain and pills, many patients find themselves watching the clock for their next dose of pain medication. But do you know about integrative medicine, a combination of techniques used to decrease pain?

Integrative Medicine Combining conventional and alternative care for pain management

What is integrative medicine? Integrative medicine is the combination of “conventional” and “alternative” medicine. Conventional medicine is care that you would receive from a doctor, such as surgery or prescription medications, whereas alternative medicine is care you typically receive outside of a doctor’s office. Coupling the two together creates a treatment plan that aims to treat the patient holistically, including physical, emotional, spiritual, mental health, and well-being. Integrative medicine methods include: Massage therapy: This therapy applies pressure to your body’s soft tissues, such as muscles and ligaments, to alleviate pain, tension and stress. It is often offered in complement to standard treatments of pain and stress.

Patients who may benefit from this therapy include those with cancer, heart disease, stomach problems, fibromyalgia, and post-surgical patients. Herbal supplements: Herbs, or dietary supplements, are used for hundreds of reasons, and some are as strong or potent as prescriptions. For this reason, it is important to coordinate any herbal supplements with your current medications and have a detailed discussion with your physician. Herbs have the potential to reduce anxiety, decrease inflammation, and lower cholesterol Acupuncture: This is an Eastern practice of inserting thin needles into targeted areas of the body. Acupuncture is a low-risk treatment that is often used to manage and alleviate painful chronic conditions. Additionally, it is known to reduce nausea and

insomnia relating to chemotherapy. Not all approaches are created equal Before trying integrative medicine, make sure to discuss options with your physician, as some treatments will work better than others. When thinking about integrative medicine, here are some helpful tips: Do some digging. There is a myriad of information to be found about integrative medicine. Stick with the pros. When researching online, make sure that the information you are receiving is from a reputable source. Avoid treatment that can interact with your medication. Treatment, such as herbs, has the potential to interact with certain medication. Talk to your doctor about whether a treatment option is known to interact with prescriptions.
