Everyone has a guilty pleasure, whether it’s eating a piece of chocolate each night before bed, sleeping a little late on the weekends, or even watching reality TV – maybe even The Bachelor/Bachelotte ABC franchise. If the cover of our June issue looks familiar, it’s because you’ve seen his face on The Bachelorette as the second runner-up vying for JoJo Fletcher’s heart. Chase McNary, a Colorado native, recently moved to Scottsdale from L.A. and is making big waves in the fitness industry. We talked to him about it all, from his journey on reality TV to his athletic apparel company to his training business in the Valley and even his most recent philanthropic efforts. Read all about his newly planted Scottsdale roots on page 46. Throughout the issue, you may find a common theme of keeping cool. After all, it is in the triple digits and temperatures are only continuing to rise. From gadgets in the kitchen to make cold treats (page 44) to tips to keep your pup from overheating (page 38), we’re covering all you need to keep the heat at bay. We’re also highlighting tips for summer hair care on page 54 and how to get the best sleep of the season on page 58. It’s also Men’s Health Month. In honor, page 34 discusses some of the cancers, as well as symptoms and signs, that men should watch out for. Lastly, it’s summer and we all know what that means… bathing suit season. Care for your core with a workout that will work those abs. Jeremy Scott demonstrates three movements to tone up on page 32. Anxiety in America
Anxiety is something that can affect anyone and everyone ‌ and it turns out its affecting everyone a little more this year. According to a recent report, 39 percent of Americans are feeling anxious, compared to 19 percent last year. Millennials are the most anxious generation, but baby boomers had the greatest increase in anxiety from 2017 to 2018 – a 7-point increase. Source: www.usnews.com.
Advocating for Children About 2.6 million American children and adolescents were diagnosed with anxiety and/or depression in 2011-12, according to an analysis of nationwide data in the Journal of Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics. The number of children with diagnosed anxiety but not depression has increased by 20 percent in recent years, the analysis reported. Despite the increase, children and adolescents are still not receiving care.
Beware of Bugs With summer adventures around the corner, be cautious of those pesky little bugs. A new report reveals that diseases transmitted through the bites of bloodfeeding ticks, mosquitoes, and fleas are a growing public health problem in the United States. Reported cases of vectorborne diseases have more than tripled nationwide, growing from 27,388 cases reported in 2004 to a whopping 96,075 cases reported in 2016. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, an estimated 88,000 people die from alcoholrelated causes annually, making alcohol the third leading preventable cause of death in the United States.
A is for Alcohol, B is for Bacteria Alcohol drinkers are more likely to have mouths full of bad bacteria, according to a recent study. Researchers found drinking alcohol, especially heavy drinking, could negatively influence the oral microbiome composition. Drinking appears to eliminate the good bacteria in a person’s mouth, and leave behind an excess of bad bacteria. Source: www.usatoday.com.
Dealing with Dementia A new study published in the British Medical Journal found medium- to highintensity exercise may improve physical fitness, but it does not slow cognitive impairment in people with mild to moderate dementia, and can even worsen some cognitive measures. Source: www. usnews.com.

UNDERSTANDING NEUROPATHY
Dr. Richard Jacoby, Scottsdale’s leading Podiatry expert answers your questions Q: WHAT IS PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY? A: Your nervous system is divided into two regions – central and
peripheral. The central system includes the brain and spinal cord, while the peripheral system includes all the nerve roots and extremity nerves emanating from it. It’s a broad network, and all of these peripheral nerves transmit vital motor and sensory information throughout the body. A peripheral neuropathy may interrupt or distort some of these transmissions. Diabetic neuropathy and chemo neuropathy are two of the most prevalent kinds.
Q: WHAT CAUSES PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY? A: The most common cause of peripheral neuropathy is diabetes.
Sometimes the cause is completely unknown (idiopathic). Here are some other potential causes for neuropathy: • • • • • • •
Autoimmune disorders rheumatoid arthritis or lupus Chronic kidney disease Infections such as HIV and liver infections Low levels of vitamin B12 or other problems with your diet Poor blood flow to the legs Underactive thyroid gland Toxin exposure such as lead, mercury, and solvents may lead to peripheral neuropathy. • Pharmaceutical drugs used to treat infections, cancer, seizures, or high blood pressure.
Q: WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF NEUROPATHY? A: Signs and symptoms include: • Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet that gradually move upward into the extremities • Pain that is sharp or throbbing • Severe sensitivity to touch • Poor coordination • Frequent falls • Muscle weakness • Paralysis

EXTREMITY HEALTH CENTER UNIQUE MEDICAL SOLUTIONS
Q: WHAT KIND OF TREATMENTS EXIST FOR PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY? A: There are several treatments available for peripheral neuropathy. • Medications, including pain medications, neurologic modifying agents, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSDAIDs), and antidepressants • Surgery, including the Dellon® Procedure for diabetic neuropathy or nerve release for mono-neuropathies like carpal tunnel syndrome • Calmare® device, a non-invasive FDA-cleared medical device shown to effectively alleviate pain associated with neuropathy • Laser therapy using specific wavelengths of light having a strong anti-inflammatory effect on tissues that help decrease pain • Injections, including steroids, numbing agents, and stem-cell rich anti-inflammatory injections Despite treatments on the market, many patients come to Extremity Health Centers reporting their doctor was unable to alleviate their pain. Dr. Jacoby welcomes challenging cases and has achieved unprecedented results in many of these patients. If you suffer from peripheral neuropathy that has not been successfully treated despite medications, schedule a consultation with Dr. Jacoby today to learn more.

Bring on the Chocolate Dark chocolate’s health benefits have been long known … but now, there’s more. The sweet treat is packed with fiber and antioxidants, which help prevent cell damage from free radicals. It may also lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, improve blood flow, and lower blood pressure. Researchers have also discovered that it may change your brain wave frequency, providing benefits in memory improvement and stress reduction. So, grab the dark cacao and feel the effects on your brain.
Eat at Home Dining out frequently is known to increase one’s intake of unhealthy sugars and fats. But a new study suggests that there’s another reason to eat at home more often: phthalates. Phthalates have been connected to birth defects, childhood obesity, asthma, neurological problems, cardiovascular issues and even cancer. Of course, not every meal you eat out is harmful, but it’s best to have a balance.

improved long-term cognitive health, but the reasons for that have been unclear. Omega-3 and -6, fatty acids commonly found in fish are often assumed to be responsible, and it appears those and parvalbumin are in it together for the health benefits. Source: www. sciencedaily.com.
Faking out the Fake Step away from the fake sugar. Artificial sweeteners are one of the most common food additives worldwide, frequently consumed in diet and zero-calorie sodas as well as other products. While some previous studies have linked artificial sweeteners with negative health consequences, earlier research has been mixed and raised questions about potential bias related to study sponsorship. However, new research finds sugar replacements can also cause health changes that are linked with diabetes and obesity. No matter which way you shake the packet, sugar or sweeteners in moderation is key. Source: www.sciencedaily.com.

5 Myths and Misconceptions of Medical Marijuana #1 You have to get high to benefit from cannabis There are several active chemicals in the cannabis plant that our brains respond to. The main two are THC and CBD. Both can be consumed without making someone feel high. The important thing to remember is to work with a trained physician that understands dosing, strength and frequency so that you feel better and reduce other side effects.
It may be surprising to learn that between 1850 and 1937 U.S. pharmacies were legally prescribing marijuana for a wide range of aliments. Between then and the 1970s, the perception and stereotypes surrounding marijuana dramatically changed. Today, the cannabis industry is booming. Since 2011, when Arizona made medical marijuana legal, the use has continued to rise. However, many remain skeptical and question its benefits, despite evidence proving otherwise. While there are many out there, following are five myths and misconceptions debunked.
#2 Smoking is the only way to ingest cannabis Many people think the only way to ingest cannabis is to smoke it, and that is not true! The beneficial chemicals found in the cannabis plant have been extracted and formulated into oils and ointments that can be easily dosed and consumed in a discrete way.
#3 There is no science behind this – people just want to get high Conducting research on cannabis in the United States is difficult because researchers need to get approval from three federal agencies. Studies have been conducted outside of the U.S. uncovering the body’s system that reacts to cannabis and the benefits it can provide. Studies have linked positive results of cannabis use to a variety of medical conditions including anxiety, chronic pain, nausea and seizure disorders. #4 My friends and family will judge me for using it Since recreational marijuana use has many stereotypes and stigmas attached to it, this can spill over to medical cannabis. However, medical marijuana has been proven to
be effective for many conditions and often these patients want to get help, not high. Patients can also remind friends and family that they are taking marijuana for the medical benefits, not for recreational use. Medical marijuana can be a good alternative when traditional medications do not treat certain conditions or aliments. #5 Marijuana is dangerous and addictive False! Studies have shown that cannabis is actually safer than tobacco and alcohol. No deaths related to marijuana overdose have been reported and the use of cannabis has been helpful for individuals overcoming opioid addiction.
Dr. Burns, founder and medical director of Southwest Medical Marijuana Evaluation Center, is a board-certified, licensed physician who has been recognized by the American Academy of Cannabinoid Medicine as a certified expert in the clinical applications of MMJ. Dr. Burns recently launched a cannabis-infused line of products DrBurns’ ReLeaf. For more information visit www.drburnsreleaf.com.

take your SEX LIFE to the NEXT LEVEL! PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE • REJUVENATION • TUNE-UP • TURBO CHARGE
THE NEWEST, MOST INNOVATIVE TREATMENT FOR MEN.
THE OLD ADAGE IS TRUE: IF YOU DON’T USE IT, YOU LOSE IT.
The power of your erection is based entirely on blood volume. The better the blood flow, the stronger the erection. As men age, harmless activities like sex and sports cause scar-tissue build up along the length of the penis. What does this mean? Less blood flow, possible curvatures due to scar tissue build-up, and…yes. Shrinkage. GainsWave Technology utilizes high-frequency, low-intensity sound waves to increase local circulation, repair aged blood vessels, and stimulate growth of new blood vessels and nerve cells. This removes years of micro-plaque and tissue build up. The result? Harder, stronger erections, increased sensitivity, and even greater girth and length. Yes, that’s what we said… you will get bigger. We guarantee it. Don’t lose it. Use it, and enjoy it. Call today to schedule your consultation.

Swap the Stairs
Need an afternoon pick-me-up? You may feel more energized if you take a walk up the stairs rather than drinking caffeine, a new study finds. Study participants who took a break and spent 10 minutes walking up and down the stairs felt an immediate energetic boost, versus those who had some sort of caffeine pick-me-up. While the study did find the boost was short-lived, it may show that exercise is a better mood booster than caffeine in the long run. Source: www.medlineplus.gov.
Macro Fails You’ve heard the term, and maybe have even done it, but counting macros has been the one of the hottest fitness and diet trends in the last few years. However, if you are only counting your macros, you may be missing out on important nutrients. If you’re only focusing on measuring your daily ratio of carbs to protein to fat, you may not consider how those food choices impact the variety and quantity of your microbiome – the collection of bacteria and other microorganisms that live in your gastrointestinal tract. However, looking at all of these together help create the perfect diet for yourself.
There’s an App for That These days, there are a ton of apps to download that help with weight loss, but one is being touted as “Weight Watchers for Millennials.” Noom is part mealplanning, part fitnesstracker and 100 percent motivational life coach. logging your meals, weight, and exercise hours (it also automatically tracks your step count). There are also different conversational blurbs about nutrition, fitness and sleep that you’re prompted to read, often quizzed briefly after – this appeals to the psychological factors of weight loss. In addition, the app asks you to rate your
motivation on a scale of 1-5. The best part? Users are connected with actual humans. Each user is assigned to a personal coach who you can exchange messages with anytime as well as a group chat where fellow users share their victories, hindrances and questions. Source: www. people.com.

Dr. Geier talks a new treatment for pain management Wouldn’t it be great if you could treat the majority of all pain related symptoms with a non-invasive approach? Now, you can. As a Chiropractor, my education and training was focused on relieving pain by influencing the nervous system through the use of spinal manipulation. However, in my practice I intently focus on the myo, which is the Latin term for muscles and connective tissue called fascia. Here in lies the term Myofascial therapy. When treating pain, I chose to focus on the myofascia of the body because this is the most important component to influencing the Central Nervous System to decrease pain, specifically honing in on treating this pain by taking an alternative, non-invasive approach. Unfortunately, myofascial therapy receives little attention as a major source of pain and is seldom taught in modern medical school training. Even more unfortunate is the lack of insurance reimbursement for this important therapy. So, let’s dig into the topic a little deeper.
running through, around and crisscrossing every inch of your body including muscle, organs, blood vessels, nerves, spinal cord, brain and skin. The central nervous system receives its greatest amount of sensory nerves from myofascial tissue. This means that the fascia is as important or more important than muscle in sensory input delivery. The key to this statement is that your myofascia becomes the byproduct of your environment without you even realizing it. It experiences stress, memorizes chronic poor posture, feels the weight of your head sitting at the computer all day, and permanently holds onto old untreated injuries. As a result of never ending signaling to the brain, the body develops symptoms like pain and endocrine dysfunction like adrenal fatigue, dysfunctional mood and brain fog, to name a few. If the fascia controls the information that can influence the brain, then this is the first step to calming down the body’s pain response and also improving overall global body function.
THE SCIENCE BEHIND PAIN AND MYOFASCIA The muscular system is the largest sensory organ. Approximately 50 percent of your body weight is made up of about 400 skeletal muscles. Your fascia is actually one giant interconnected web of connective tissue
WHAT IS MYOFASCIAL THERAPY? It is a deep tissue treatment involving the breakdown of fascial adhesions known as trigger points. These trigger points ultimately create a permanently shortened muscle, resulting in pain and muscle dysfunction and, in turn, weakness and uncoordinated movements. Myofascial therapy can be performed in many ways including by a practitioner’s hands, using tools that break down adhesions and stretching. This therapy proves to be a very efficient and effective therapy for pain management, improving athletic performance and reducing cellulite.
COMMON INJURIES RELATED TO MYOFASCIAL TRIGGER POINTS • Pain or stiffness in your neck, mid- or lowback • Headaches or jaw pain • Sciatica and other nerve related symptoms like numbness and tingling • Tendonitis, Bursitis and Plantar Fasciitis • Joint pain especially in your shoulder, knee or wrist • Generalized dull, achy pain • Athletic performance issues
HOW DOES HEALTHY FASCIA BECOME UNHEALTHY FASCIA? This happens when extra layers of fascia grow due to stress, trauma, repetitive motions, dehydration and inflammation. Inflammation comes from repetitive working out or even eating inflammatory foods such as (but not limited to) sugar, fried food, certain oils and processed wheat.

MOVEMENT #1 10 Full AB Wheel Rollouts Focus on keeping your hips even, making a straight line from knee crease to the top of your head as you roll out. Take your time and chase quality not the clock with these.
THE BREAKDOWN Set your time and take three minutes to complete the following:
10 Full Ab Wheel Rollouts 30 Reps of Mountain Climbers
MOVEMENT #2 30 reps of Mt. Climbers Immediately move into this movement with slow, controlled exchanges, squeezing your knee as you bring it toward your chest (15/reps per leg making 30 total reps).
10 Plank to Pushup Exchanges Complete all three movements and 50 total reps inside three minutes, rest for the remainder of the time if you finish early. You can repeat the pattern for three to five cycles depending on your ability level.
MOVEMENT #3 10 Plank to Push Up Exchanges Again, focus on form, moving from your plank to pushup position with as little movement in your hips as possible. I suggest starting with your feet wider than shoulder width apart for more stability as you transition.

Keeping Men’s Health in Mind A look at some of the most common cancers among males and what symptoms to watch out for The National Cancer Institute estimates 1,735,350 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the U.S. this year. Cancer mortality is higher among men than women – making early diagnosis an important factor in survival. Since May is Men’s Health Month, learn about the signs and symptoms of the most common cancers affecting men to remain vigilant about your health.
Prostate Cancer Prostate cancer occurs when cells in the prostate gland begin to grow uncontrollably. With one in nine men being diagnosed with prostate cancer is his lifetime, it is the second most common cancer in men. See your doctor if you’re experiencing difficulty urinating, slowing of your urinary stream or have blood in your urine. A blood test that measures the protein produced by the prostate gland, the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test, can detect abnormalities of the prostate gland but has fallen out of favor for generalized screening. Your doctor may use the PSA test in combination with physical examination findings, including a rectal examination of the prostate gland, to make recommendations for you. Lung Cancer About 14 percent of all new cancers are lung cancers. It’s also the leading cause of cancer deaths in both men and women. While most lung cancers start off asymptomatic, early symptoms may include shortness of breath, persistent cough, chest pain and coughing up blood. Many lung cancers are detected as suspicious areas on routine chest X-rays done for annual health screenings, which means regular checkups with your doctor are key.
Some people, such as those with a history of smoking, will require advanced surveillance with CT imaging for cancer detection. If these tests are suspicious for cancer, further testing such as a lung biopsy will likely be needed to obtain a sample of the concerning area within the lungs. Colorectal Cancer Most colorectal cancers start as a growth on the inner lining of the colon or rectum. Changes in bowel habits, rectal bleeding, unexplained weight loss and abdominal pain can be indicators of colorectal cancer. At times, colorectal cancer can be present without any symptoms at all, which is why regular screening is important. One of the most effective screening methods is a colonoscopy. This test looks at the entire length of the colon and rectum with a colonoscope — a thin, flexible lighted tube with a small video camera on the end. For most men, screening should begin at age 50 and be repeated every 10 years. Men with greater risk factors (such as a family history of polyps or colorectal cancer or a personal history of chronic inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn’s disease) require more frequent screening. Barium enema or CT colonography (virtual colonoscopy) are other screening

methods your doctor may recommend. Thyroid Cancer The American Cancer Society estimates there will be 1,310 new cases of thyroid cancer in Arizona this year. While women are more likely to have thyroid cancer than men, death rates among women and men are similar — suggesting that men have a worse prognosis, which makes a prompt diagnosis potentially lifesaving. Symptoms include lumps or swelling in the neck, pain in the front of neck, hoarseness, and trouble swallowing. See your doctor immediately if you notice these signs. A physical examination of your neck is often the first step. Your doctor may recommend an ultrasound to help determine if a thyroid nodule is present and if it is solid, fluid-filled or has any suspicious characteristics. A nodule can then be sampled if necessary with ultrasound guidance. While some cancer risk factors (such as race, family history and age) can’t be changed, you may be able to reduce your cancer risk by eating a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, not smoking, and seeing your doctor for regular checkups. Be mindful and take notice of concerning signs and visit your doctor if you’re experiencing these symptoms.

Family Fuel Healthy snacks for young athletes With summer sports for the kiddos in full swing, it’s also snack season. Choosing the best afterschool and post-game snack for your youngsters will help them perform well on the field and recover. Choosing nutritious yet delicious options will make your kids forget to ask about a trip to the ice cream shop and will have half as much sugar to boot. The goal is to provide a balanced snack with protein, carbohydrates, and fats to stabilize blood sugar and to promote energy. The dietary fat in the snacks we’ve rounded up will help your young ones feel satiated during the game (Read: not complaining they are hungry). Post-game, focus on protein and replenishing those lost glycogen stores.

Prep for Play Stock your refrigerator with pre-cut fruits and veggies. Have a small cooler bag with ice packs available to bring healthy snacks on the go. Doing so will help you dodge the fast-food drivethru this summer. With a small amount of preparation, the whole family will be feeling their best, and the kiddos will avoid that post-sugar energy crash this season. Remember to hydrate even more so in the heat. Using electrolyte tablets in their water bottle will help. Dehydration is very common in the Arizona heat. Pre-game snack ideas include an apple with peanut butter, flavored almonds with strawberries, baby carrots and guacamole, Acai topped with flaxseed, or natural air-popped
popcorn with a drizzle of organic butter. During the Day During cardiovascular activities, like sporting events, your body relies on fast acting carbohydrates for fuel. Having them available through whole, unprocessed food sources will help your body and your little one’s body, perform at its best. It can be hard to determine what to choose with so many options today. While whole food items are always key, it’s OK to use minimally processed items like nitrate-free deli meat, protein powder, or high-quality, natural protein bars for picky eaters or on-the-go parents. If you turn to packaged items, look for ones with the fewest ingredients. Ask your youngster

how he or she felt during the game and see which snacks they digest easiest. Not all foods agree with us the same and learning what works best for each young athlete is critical. You will also want to keep tabs on total calories and increase them for the energy needs of an athletic event. Increase calories by merely adding an extra snack throughout the day or increasing portion sizes at each meal. If you pack your child’s lunch, it could be easier to add a bit to each meal verse adding a meal or snack especially if there are time constraints with a sporting event on a school night. After the Game Post-game, focus on protein and replen-
ishing those lost glycogen stores. If your athlete is not hungry immediately after he or she plays, don’t fret. There is no need to forcefeed. Implementing good eating habits now, like waiting until you are hungry to eat, stopping just before you are full, and eating your food slowly, will carry through their lives into adulthood. Those who use good eating habits regularly are less likely to be overweight as adults. Snack options for after the game include non-fat Greek yogurt with honey, whey or vegan protein smoothie, nitrate free deli meat on whole grain bread with cucumber slices, string cheese with whole grain crackers, or a natural protein bar.

PROTECT YOUR PET THIS SUMMER! By Michael Morefield, marketing and communications director at Arizona Animal Welfare League, www.aawl.org.
A beautiful 80-degree day is patio-perfect for Arizonans. However, paw-rents need to be diligent about their pups’ health as temps rise – even on a pleasant afternoon. We turned to Dr. Rebecca Bukowy of MD Petcare who shared some of the best ways to mitigate
heat exhaustion risks. She suggests walking your dog early in the morning or late at night, carrying plenty of water for your pet, never leaving your dog in the car, and looking for warning signs of heat exhaustion. Following are a few other tips for making it through the summer with ease.
Pack the Pup-Screen! Thick coats of fur may overheat your dog, but short-coated dogs can suffer even bigger problems: skin cancer. Short or white coats, think: bully breeds, does not effectively protect their skin from UV rays. As with humans, overexposure to UV rays can cause different forms of skin cancer. Use a children’s or dogfriendly sunscreen, which is made for more sensitive skin, and avoid using an aerosolized sunscreen. Thick liquid sunscreens can be rubbed into their fur and onto their skin – but try not to let them lick it off as they might get sick. Water – Not Just For Drinking! If you’re looking to have outdoor fun
with your dog after that early morning walk, think about games with a kiddie pool. Found at most stores for less than $20, small pools can fit on apartment patios and provide endless fun for your pup on a hot day. Escape the Heat – and Ticks! As more people and their four-legged family members escape up north for cooler temperatures, they may not realize they are exposing their dogs to hungry, disease-carrying ticks. The majority of dog owners in the Valley do not use flea and tick treatment on their pets, but a simple monthly treatment can save them what could be thousands of dollars in medical bills. Tick fever, tick paralysis and blood-borne dis-
eases carried by ticks can infect your dog during one of your weekend outings in the woods. Some of these diseases are fatal but can be easily avoided with a pill or cream every month. If it’s Too Hot for Your Hand, It’s Too Hot for Your Hound Even if the temp feels nice enough for a walk, asphalt can retain a lot of heat after sunset. Use the back of your hand to feel the ground. If you can’t leave the back of your hand on the ground for seven seconds, it’s too hot for your pup’s feet. Booties for their paws are an option, but they do take extra training and should not be used as an answer to walking your dog when the temperature is too hot.

Eyes aren’t something many people think twice about, even though they are one of the most important parts of the human body. They allow us to see, recognize friends and family, as well as distinguish shapes and sizes at first glance. Beyond that, there is more than, well, what meets the eye. The effect that eyes and sight have on our everyday lives is immeasurable. Don’t believe us? See for yourself with these crazy facts.
1. Starting early. Your eyes start to develop two weeks after you are conceived. 2. Cleaning crew. Blinking helps remove any debris on your eye’s surface by spreading tears over them. The tears moisten and lubricate the eyes and they also have important antibacterial properties. 3. How big? The human eye weights roughly just under an ounce and is approximately an inch across.
8 Crazy Facts About Your Eyes 42

4. Complicated system. An eye is composed of more than 2 million working parts. 5. In the blink of an eye. A blink usually lasts 100 to 150 milliseconds. The eyes blink on an average of 17 times per minute, 14,280 times per
day and 5.2 million times a year. 6. Consistency is key. While your nose and ears continue to grow throughout your life, your eyes will be the same size at birth and death. 7. A team effort. Each eye has a blind spot in the back of the retina where the optic nerve attaches. Your eyes work together to fill in each other’s blind spot so you don’t notice. 8. A visionary difference. If you’re shortsighted, your eyeball is longer than normal. If you’re farsighted, it’s shorter than average.

The Joke’s on Us! So go ahead and laugh already—hey, it’s good for you!
One day, Einstein is scheduled to speak at a science conference. On the way there, he is talking to his driver (who looks a bit like him) and says, “I’m sick of all these conferences. I always say the same things over and over.” “You’re right,” replies the driver. “As your driver, I’ve attended all of them, and even though I don’t know anything about science, I could even answer all of the questions now.” “What a great idea,” Einstein says. “Let’s switch places then.” So, they switch clothes and as soon as they arrive, the driver goes on stage and starts giving the usual speech, while the real Einstein, dressed as the car driver, attends it. But in the crowd, there is one scientist who wants to impress everyone and thinks of a very difficult question to ask, hoping he won’t be able to respond. After he asks the question, the whole room goes silent, holding their breath, waiting for Eintstein’s response. The driver looks at him, serious as ever, and says, “Sir, your question is so easy to answer that I’m going to let my driver answer it for me.”
A man goes to his doctor for his annual checkup. The doctor says, “You should drink at least 10 glasses of water every day.” The patient replies, “Well, that’s impossible!” “Why?” asks the doctor. “Because,” begins the patient, “I only have four glasses at home.”

“Will you accept this rose?” Viewers of ABC’s The Bachelor and The Bachelorette know that this is the question a contestant needs to hear in order to move forward in the quest to find true love. Chase McNary was on that quest, competing against 26 other men, to win the heart of season 12 Bachelorette, JoJo Fletcher. McNary, a native of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, was posed this question 23 times, making him the second runner up to Fletcher’s heart. It was his easy going personality, yet uninhibited approach, combined with his outdoor enthusiasm that made the then-27-yearold a fan favorite. Although he didn’t receive the final rose, McNary had other takeaways from the show, including travel and relationship advice that he will forever be grateful for. Despite his tremendous and life-giving experience with the network, McNary is happy to keep his dating life out of the public eye moving forward. “As it stands right now, my days in front of the camera for reality TV and dating shows has concluded,” he divulges. “Should an opportunity arise to be in front of the camera that doesn’t involve reality or dating – perhaps, hosting a show or maybe some sort of competition show – I would be open to that but it is too soon to tell at this point.” MADE IN THE MOUNTAINS Prior to his reality show stint, McNary, a Colorado State University graduate with a degree in business communication, was a medical sales representative for Zimmer Biomet. For a little over two years, he worked alongside some of the most intelligent people in spinal device sales to help improve or save the lives of patients. Nothing was more rewarding for McNary. However, after The Bachelorette aired, opportunities kept presenting themselves to him that he couldn’t refuse. “Spinal device sales is a very diligent job that requires a lot of attention to keep your territory operating smoothing,” he explains. “I decided to step away to give someone else the opportunity to thrive while I embraced the lifestyle after TV and focused on my entrepreneurial spirit.”

“IT DIDN’T TAKE ME LONG TO REALIZE T H AT W E O N LY G E T O N E B O D Y, O N E MIND AND ONE SOUL, BUT THERE ARE ONE M I L L I O N WAY S TO LIVE”
Born and raised in a state that is outfitted with striking mountains – hello, The Rockies – rivers and plains (hence the nickname Colorful Colorado), McNary has always had deep-seeded appreciation for nature. From skiing and snowboarding in the winters to hiking, trail running and mountain biking in the summers, as well as playing competitive hockey for 14 years, living a healthy and outdoororiented lifestyle is the only lifestyle he has ever known. It only made sense that his entrepreneurial spirit would lead him to the fitness arena. “It didn’t take me long to realize that we only get one body, one mind and one soul, but there are one million ways to live,” he says. “Fitness has so many outlets, and it carries so much positivity because it takes the right mindset and right attitude to get into the best shape of your life. I wanted to do something that I never needed a vacation from and getting paid to teach people how to treat their bodies, while staying in tune with mine, is that something.” For all you die-hard McNary fans, a fun fact about him that you may not know is that he has a tattoo of a lion on the left side of his ribs. His ink is a daily reminder to remain bold and strong no matter what obstacles fall before him. This affirmation is something he wanted to instill in others, thus he created Left Side Lion Fitness (LSL). “I have always lived a life of health and fitness and wanted to utilize that to share and teach others how health and fitness can bring so much strength to one physically, mentally, and spiritually.” He adds, “With the platform I was given, I found a way to share my knowledge and passion with as many people as I could.” LSL brought McNary to Los Angeles where he helped clients focus on the health and wellness of the body, mind and soul through positive motivation, nutrition and fitness. In addition to LSL, he is the co-founder of LeisureLetics, a subscription service that provides customers with a multitude of products, namely yoga pants, on a monthly or bimonthly basis. LeisureLetics combines highquality athletic wear with comfortable,
breathable material. “It’s great to be able to pair an apparel company with my fitness company to bring it full circle,” he says. DESTINED FOR THE DESERT After eight months kick-starting his fitness empire in L.A., McNary needed a change of scenery. Tired of the traffic, outrageous prices on everything and a lack of open, outdoor spaces, he packed up a U-Haul and his F-150 and relocated
to Scottsdale in January 2017. The move was a no-brainer for this Coloradoan since both his hometown and Arizona have an emphasis on a healthy lifestyle with world-class outdoor activities. At last, mountains were in his backyard again. “The more I explore, the more I fall in love with Arizona,” he says. “Colorado has seasons whereas California has people and the beach. Arizona has all the best things from both places without the bad, like overpopulation and overpriced coffee
and gas,” he laughs. Since moving here, McNary has, of course, spent a lot of time outdoors. When he isn’t helping clients in the gym or working out in one himself, he finds solace hiking Camelback Mountain, running Pinnacle Peak or Tom’s Thumb Trail, and biking Pemberton Trail in McDowell Mountain Regional Park. Finding a new home at TruFusion in North Scottsdale, McNary has also incorporated yoga, Pilates and kettlebell classes into his routine. “I have been able to get to know TruFusion owner Michael Saletta very well. We are planning to work together to host a few different events over the summer to give back to the community,” McNary says. Speaking of community outreach, 2018 is McNary’s year of paying it forward. In addition to TruFusion, he is working with Earn Your Booze to bring the Scottsdale community a list of fun and healthy things to do in town. McNary’s focus right now is growing LSL, LeisureLetics and working on projects with local fitness companies. However, that doesn’t mean dating is off the table. Single female Phoenicians, take note – this bachelor is looking for a soul mate that is also driven by health and wellness. “It’s important that she understands the importance of nutrition because, let’s face it, most of our meals will probably be eaten together,” he says. Until he finds his special someone, McNary will continue to work on himself and thrive with the opportunities he has been given. “Every day is a new opportunity to improve, explore and be more,” he says. “Even when life throws you a curve ball and puts you in a different direction than previously planned (like being on reality TV), I find it very important to never lose sight of those goals. Learning how to adapt and overcome changing conditions is fun for me because staying committed to the goal, but flexible in the approach, is how I find the most success in life.” To learn more, visit www.leftsidelion. com and www.leisureletics.com.

Agstract Apparel incorporates earthy designs into sustainable clothing

In today’s business world, there are many companies that are concerned with being eco-friendly. Founded in 2017, Agstract Apparel is a women’s activewear company that has formed an engaged and environmentally conscious community around its line of yoga leggings while keeping its company sustainable and as environmentally friendly as possible.
FINDING INSPIRATION Originally hailing from Los Angeles, California, Jason Black graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in business and communications and is the owner of Agstract Apparel. With a small dedicated group, the brand is growing in unique ways, naturally. “I’ve been a photographer for 10 years,” he says. “In that time, I photographed everything from beauty and fashion for several different agencies in Arizona, to real estate and small businesses.” More recently, he had also become fascinated with landscape and nature photography as a personal hobby. At the same time, he began encountering oil paintings by various artists that reminded him of geodes, and he had a growing desire to create abstract work. “I thought, ‘If I took my photography skills and photographed geodes, rocks and minerals at the macro level and got some cool detail, could I essentially create something that looked like abstract art, but was natural?’” Black recalls.
unique natural patterns that are found in various rocks, geodes and minerals. “I designed the product and I took the patterns and used them on a threedimensional model to ensure they looked the best they possibly could on the body.” Currently, the Agstract Apparel line includes yoga leggings, yoga capris and a traditional legging with a lower waistband. Black anticipates that there will be other activewear items that the company will introduce in the future.
AGSTRACT APPAREL He researched and photographed colorful rocks and minerals, and turned those into digitally printed canvases. After talking with the owner of a printing business in Tempe, Black was made aware that the interesting patterns he was photographing could also be used as prints for clothing. “I was looking for a way to appeal to a bigger audience with my work,” he says. Agstract Apparel was born shortly thereafter. Black knew that yoga clothing and athletic apparel were a popular market. So, he sourced a company that could manufacture activewear with eco-friendly polyester, utilizing the many colors and
SUSTAINABILITY AND COMMUNITY Black isn’t just about the designs – he also hopes to impact nature and the community around him in a positive way through his brand. “Part of our mission is to make sure that we’re sustainable,” Black says. “We like to admire nature. It’s where our designs come from, and we want to make sure we’re doing our part to make sure we’re giving back by protecting and restoring the outdoors.”
Using eco-friendly polyester for its products is just the first part of that. “It reduces the amount of heat, water and energy used to manufacture it by 70 percent. That’s a big thing for us.” Black is also looking to bring production to Arizona from Montreal, Canada while keeping an eye on retaining a sustainable framework. A key component of the Agstract Apparel brand is a community of active and like-minded individuals who get together in the real world through its group called Agtive. “The purpose of Agtive is to build our community around Agstract Apparel and provide people with an event each month that allows them to do something they haven’t done before or get out into nature.” Some events the group has done so far include aerial yoga and a moonlight hike with meditation. The group holds a combination of free and paid events, and has its own Facebook community page. “I like this old-school method of actually getting people together,” he says. The Agstract Apparel team includes Black and his wife, Denise Black. Together they are working to further their goals through these events. “I hope the Agtive side of our business builds a strong community, that has been one of the most fun parts all of this,” Black says. “I’m hoping we will be a well-known community in the Valley, a well-known brand and that we’ll have people sharing our message.” Agstract Apparel also puts an emphasis on philanthropy and gives back to nonprofit, One Tree Planted. The company donates $1 of every apparel item sold, which goes directly to planting a tree. The nonprofit currently works on reforestation planting in North America, Latin America, Asia and Africa. “Anytime someone buys an item from Agstract that equates to a tree being planted, so we can try to offset any impact that we might have and maybe do a little extra to have an overall positive outcome,” Black explains. Getting Back to Basics Children are our greatest teachers and we are theirs. Each of us serves as an example for the other to reflect and yet, the value of this reflection will often go unseen. The communication which can occur between an adult and a child is the mirror which provides some of the most authentic and genuine lessons for all. It’s a connection where there is much to gain on both sides. It’s also a platform that has the greatest potential to reflect the best parts of us all if nurtured and handled with the greatest of care. “How,” you say? Let’s get back to basics using four ways to enhance our communication with childlike wonderment.
52

06/18
Embrace your senses. Step into the child’s mindset together. Give yourself permission to go back and remember what it was like to be a kid. What was it like to taste, touch, smell, hear or see something for the very first time? Take a step back and allow yourself to relive those memories all over again. Then, share your experiences to reinvigorate that child within. You may notice that you’re able to better relate to that younger reflection sitting in front of you and they may be more willing to open up to you. Observe with wonderment. It’s not a small world after all. Take moments of pause to observe and appreciate everything that is going on around you. Kids do it all the time, so pay attention. A child’s imagination and creativity can often be a resource of great inspiration. Be open and listen to what they have to say if you expect them to listen to you. Connect to their fearless, sometimes rebellious nature! Then watch as any limitations (often placed on ourselves) become endless possibilities. Be willing to live in those possibilities together and prepare to be a little rebel yourself. Get curious. Robert Schuller asks us, “What would you do if you knew you could not fail?” Well, now that you’re embracing that child mindset and you’ve seen just how big the world is around you; it’s time to get curious about that next adventure. Children develop a natural curiosity for pretty much everything early on in life. They watch your every move, no matter what age, and they will often try things for themselves, constantly test their limits (and your patience). Take a breath and get curious with them. When you seek to understand one another, you create a better relationship and stronger bond that you can all trust. Be willing to play. What did you want to be when you grew up? Have you figured it out yet? You may have heard this question many times as a kid. As an adult, you may still hear it. The truth is there has never been just one answer or one path. The beauty of life is that it’s a big sandbox with lots of room to play. Invite your children to be a part of your adventure and be willing to be a part of theirs. Challenge each other, have fun together, learn from one another, appreciate each other and never lose that passion for life. Remember what George Shaw said, “We don’t stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing.” At the end of the day, our time together is limited. Make it count. Open the lines of communication between that child within and the child in front of you. You need them as much as they need you. Discover the reflection of yourselves through the eyes of one another. Let that reflection be the one that follows for generations to come.

Summer Hair Care 5 tips to reduce damage
1. Use moisturizing shampoo and/ or conditioner. A lot of women steer clear of shampoos and conditioners labeled as “hydrating” because they are afraid it will weigh their hair down. Fear not! Coupling a moisturizing conditioner with a strengthening or volumizing shampoo is a great solution and will help protect deprived hair from the dry heat.
Summer is in full swing! Slather on that sunscreen and head out to the pool to cool down with your favorite icy beverage. That is what many Phoenicians do when the temperatures hit triple digits. But what most people do not consider is the toll that sun exposure, heat, and pool chemicals have on their beautiful hair. Women spend countless hours in the salon maintaining their luxurious locks just to let the elements take their toll on it. Whether your plan is to lounge by the pool, go hiking, or escape the desert for a coastal getaway, here are a handful of tips and tricks that will help keep your hair in optimum shape this summer:
2. Buy products that contain UVA/ UVB protectant. Be sure to choose styling products that contain a protectant from the sun’s rays. Did you know that your hair can get a sun burn the same as your skin? It’s true! The damage may not be immediately noticeable, but it can surely have lasting effects. Many styling products now include UVA/UVB protection for yearround coverage. 3. Wet your hair before you get into the pool or ocean. Dry hair acts like a sponge when you first get it wet, so be sure to wet it with tap water prior to diving into the pool or ocean water. This will help the hair absorb less of the harsh pool chemicals
and salt water that can take a toll on the health and look of your hair. Have you ever noticed your blonde highlights looking a little green after the pool? That’s a cruel result of the chlorine and minerals in the water. There are post-swim shampoos on the market, but they only fix the color, not the lasting damage. 4. Apply a conditioning mask every couple of weeks. Investing in a quality treatment is one of the best ways to combat dryness in the summer months. Ask your stylist about professional-grade treatments or you can pick up an athome mask to use in the shower. If your plan is to lounge by the water, but not get your hair wet, you can apply the mask to damp hair and keep it pinned up to shield it from the sun and heat. Using a mask with UVA/ UVB protectant is strongly encouraged. 5. Keep it covered. The easiest way to protect your hair this summer is to simply throw on a hat. Pick up a cute floppy hat. You’ll protect your hair and face from the sun and look stylish while doing it!

Shut-eye Success Improve the quality of your sleep Every year as the we move into late spring in the desert, a similar phenomenon occurs among the athletes I help prepare for athletic competition; usual symptoms of overtraining. Viewing lots of data over time, including analysis and discussion with many of my colleagues, I’ve come to the conclusion that this often occurs due to lack of our best form of recovery – sleep. Many of the factors that promote good REM sleep are slowly taken away as the temperatures rise into the triple digits. For those seeking athletic performance guidance, there are a few ways to keep this from happening. Like any performance gain, it requires some discipline, but it will allow you to thrive during the summer months. It will also enable you to continue to improve instead of having your athletic performances slip. Sleep is essential, it’s our No. 1 form of natural recovery – without solid sleep, we can’t continue to improve and usually begin to regress in all things human performance. Following are three ways to improve your sleep quality.
58
ScottsdaleHealth
06/18
Cool Down The first step is to get cool. Most science shows that the human body sleeps best in a 64-degree Fahrenheit room. If this isn’t attainable through air condition, find other ways to stay cool and like using a fan, a cooler sheet and mattress, or letting the dog sleep in his or her own bed for the night. Staying cooler while asleep is key, and it will help improve the quality of your summer rest.
Go Dark A second idea is to make your sleeping area a little darker. With longer days, the sun sets later and rises earlier, and this may not provide enough time to get adequate rest. Our bodies like a dark environment to sleep, so blackout shades in your room are a good idea. That said, it’s essential to get a lot of light upon waking. If there isn’t natural light available, turn on bright lights in the morning, and spend a little time looking at a bright computer screen. It will set your internal clock to be awake for the day ahead. Bonus tip: The reverse is true in the evening. Stay away from bright lights and phone/TV/computer screens! Instead, fall asleep by reading a book or magazine.
Sleep Earlier Lastly, and perhaps most challenging for many, is to simply get to bed earlier. Many of us get up to run, bike, swim, or gym at obscene hours. We need, at a minimum, seven or eight hours of sleep during hard training. So, if you really are going to be getting up at 4 a.m., you should be seriously winding down by 8 p.m. Cool your room, shut the shades, turn the fan on, and plan to have a great workout in the morning because of the disciplined steps you’re taking the evening before.
