Heart-healthy Breakfast Don’t skip out on the most important meal of the day – it’s good for your heart. A study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology reported skipping breakfast was significantly associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular-related death, especially stroke-related death. After looking at common factors such as a person’s age, sex, race, socioeconomic status, diet, lifestyle, body mass index and disease status, researches found that those who never ate breakfast had an 87% higher risk of cardiovascular mortality compared with people who ate breakfast every day. So grab a heart-healthy breakfast, and keep your heart happy.
Not Just for Smokers Sometimes, stigma stands in the way of care. According to a recent evaluation, lung cancer in people who have never smoked is more common than most people think, and its on the rise. Lung cancer awareness is historically a strong and honest messaging on smoking, but has inadvertently underwritten to lung cancer receiving much less attention than breast, prostate and ovarian cancers. The British study reported that more nonsmokers died from lung cancer than breast, prostate and ovarian cancers. Increasing awareness could help lead to earlier diagnosis, reduce the blame culture around lung cancer and rebalance research funding. Source: www.sciencedaily.com.

Step Away From the Chips It’s the cycle that keeps on giving. When you are stressed, you reach for your go-to snack: chips, chocolate, popcorn, granola bars – you name it. When stress occurs, the adrenal glands release a hormone called cortisol, which increases

appetite and motivates a person to eat, especially foods high in fat, sugar, or both. However, a recent study is giving a better look into why that may not be your best bet the next time you are stressed out. Researchers made a discovery: an insulincontrolled molecular pathway in the brain
that may lead to excessive weight gain. When you reach for your high-calorie/ fat food, you are more likely to gain weight when you consume these foods under stress, versus when you eat them during less stressful situations. Source: www. medicalnewstoday.com.
Which Came First: Chicken or Food Poisoning? Unfortunately, as recent food poisoning cases tied to raw turkey, ground beef, cut melon and romaine lettuce suggest, it’s not going away anytime soon. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a recent report that the frequency of several types of food poisoning infections climbed last year, but that the increases could be the result of new diagnostic tools that help identify more cases. The two most common sources of infection have been longtime problems: salmonella and campylobacter. Salmonella can come from an array of foods including vegetables, chicken, eggs, beef and pork. The other germ, campylobacter, is commonly tied to chicken. While these two infections can appear anywhere, they are typically more often found in chicken. Source: www. nbcnews.com.

A Warning to Parents Anxiety and depression don’t just affect adults, and there is a warning sign to look out for. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 35% of young adults in the United States are obese. And, about 32% of teens ages 13-17 have had an anxiety condition at some point in their lives. A recent nationwide study connected obesity and anxiety among youth, finding that obesity is an independent risk factor for anxiety and depression among children and teenagers. Chitchat with your Children Keep talking – its good for the baby! Researchers found that young children who are exposed to a large amount of adult speech tend to have better cognitive skills than children whose parents are on the quieter side. A new study identified a link between kids who heard high quantities of adult speech and their nonverbal abilities such as reasoning, numeracy and shape awareness. The researchers also found that high-quality adult speech may have benefits for children’s linguistic development, as children in the study who interacted with adults who used a diverse vocabulary knew a greater variety of words themselves. So keep talking, you are helping your child grow! Source: www.sciencedaily.com.

years due to population aging, decreasing marriage rates and lowering fertility, and the percentage of those with reported mental diseases has also increased throughout the years. Previous studies
have investigated the link between living alone and mental disorders but have generally been conducted in elderly populations. Source: www. sciencedaily.com.

6 Ways to Keep Your Kids Safe Around the Pool Summer always comes early here in the Valley, and with it, pool season. Playing in the pool is one of the best ways to cool off and beat the heat, but when it comes to the pool and your kids, safety always comes first. Dive into these simple precautions to ensure that everyone has fun and stays safe around the pool this summer.
1. Teach your kids how to swim. This might seem obvious, but it is a fact that learning to swim saves lives. While it’s important to note that this doesn’t guarantee safety, you will drastically reduce the chances of accidental drowning by enrolling your child in a local pool school and having them practice frequently. 2. Walk, don’t run and look before you leap. Pool decks get very wet and very slippery. Keeping kids from running or playing rough near the pool is an easy way to prevent a slip and fall, and the possibility of serious injury. Children also need to be careful when jumping into the water. Jumping or diving into the shallow end of the pool is dangerous. Be aware of people swimming close by; an underwater colli-
sion is bad news for everyone! 3. Surround your pool with a safety barrier. Installing a fence at least 4 feet high with self-closing and locking gates can make all the difference in keeping a wandering child out of the water. Many pool fences are built to be climb-resistant to prevent little ones from trying to get into the pool the hard way. Check with local officials for specific requirements. 4. Balance your water. An underappreciated part of pool safety is keeping the water itself clean and sanitary. Even if you cannot see it with the naked eye, your water could be home to microscopic germs or other dangerous pollutants. Testing your water with a test kit and adding the right chemicals will keep your pool
and your guests safe and healthy. 5. Be prepared. Learn CPR and first aid and keep an emergency kit and lifesaving equipment near the pool. If someone is in trouble and needs to be rescued from the water, be sure they are seen in the ER immediately, even if they seem fine. 6. Watch your kids. Finally, the most important rule of all: Watch your kids around water. Stay attentive and avoid texting or using your cell phone. If you are with other adults, take turns being the water watcher. If you are alone and need to leave the pool area for any reason at all, bring your children with you. Never, ever leave them alone in or around the pool. Taking your eyes off your kids for only a second is all it takes for tragedy to strike.
Swimways, Leslie’s Pools and Aqua-Tots are teaming up to keep communities and families safe around pools all summer long. To learn more, visit lesliespool.com/poolsafety.htm

Portion Control for the Future
A Magic Pill Take a pill and lose some weight? That dream is becoming a reality. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently cleared a new capsule to help adults who are overweight or obese shed some pounds, when used in conjunction with diet and exercise. The hydrogel capsule can be taken with water before lunch and dinner. In the stomach, the capsule releases thousands of particles that absorb water and swell to create small individual gel pieces. Those gel pieces increase the volume and elasticity of the stomach and small intestine, helping to make you feel full, which could then lead to weight loss.
It’s important to watch portion sizes starts early, according to a new study conducted at Penn State. Researchers found that when served larger portions of typical meals or snacks, preschoolers consumed more food, both by weight and calories. While it’s known that adults are likely to eat more when served larger portions of food over time, it was thought that young children can sense how many calories from food they need and adjust their eating habits accordingly. This recent study concludes that portion control should start early in life to help prevent obesity and other weight-related issues later on in life.
One Point for the Mediterranean Diet The Mediterranean diet has been long applauded as the “best” diet to maintain a healthy weight, and it keeps reigning true. Those who stick to a Mediterranean diet tend to consume fewer calories, while meeting all of their needs, compared to those who follow the Western diet most Americans abide by, according to a study performed at Wake Forest School of Medicine. The research resulted in the first experimental evidence that the Mediterranean diet protected against increases in consumption, obesity and prediabetes compared to the Western diet.

Acupuncture for Everything Americans are moving away from traditional medicine and steering toward natural medicine – for everything from the common aliment to weight loss. Acupuncture is believed to help balance the flow of energy through the body and lead to a slew of physical and mental health improvements, including better sleep and stress relief. Research has also suggested that acupuncture can help people curb or kick additions, from food to drug addictions. A recent study conducted by Yale University shows that acupuncture might alter brain chemicals associated with these addictions and, in this way, aid in weight loss.

However, in my practice I intently focus on the myo, which is the Latin term for muscles and connective tissue called fascia. Here in lies the term Myofascial therapy. When treating pain, I chose to focus on the myofascia of the body because this is the most important component to influencing the Central Nervous System to decrease pain, specifically honing in on treating this pain by taking an alternative, non-invasive approach. Unfortunately, myofascial therapy receives little attention as a major source of pain and is seldom taught in modern medical school training. Even more unfortunate is the lack of insurance reimbursement for this important therapy. So, let’s dig into the topic a little deeper.
running through, around and crisscrossing every inch of your body including muscle, organs, blood vessels, nerves, spinal cord, brain and skin. The central nervous system receives its greatest amount of sensory nerves from myofascial tissue. This means that the fascia is as important or more important than muscle in sensory input delivery. The key to this statement is that your myofascia becomes the byproduct of your environment without you even realizing it. It experiences stress, memorizes chronic poor posture, feels the weight of your head sitting at the computer all day, and permanently holds onto old untreated injuries. As a result of never ending signaling to the brain, the body develops symptoms like pain and endocrine dysfunction like adrenal fatigue, dysfunctional mood and brain fog, to name a few. If the fascia controls the information that can influence the brain, then this is the first step to calming down the body’s pain response and also improving overall global body function.
THE SCIENCE BEHIND PAIN AND MYOFASCIA The muscular system is the largest sensory organ. Approximately 50 percent of your body weight is made up of about 400 skeletal muscles. Your fascia is actually one giant interconnected web of connective tissue
WHAT IS MYOFASCIAL THERAPY? It is a deep tissue treatment involving the breakdown of fascial adhesions known as trigger points. These trigger points ultimately create a permanently shortened muscle, resulting in pain and muscle dysfunction and, in turn, weakness and uncoordinated movements. Myofascial therapy can be performed in many ways including by a practitioner’s hands, using tools that break down adhesions and stretching. This therapy proves to be a very efficient and effective therapy for pain management, improving athletic performance and reducing cellulite.
COMMON INJURIES RELATED TO MYOFASCIAL TRIGGER POINTS • Pain or stiffness in your neck, mid- or lowback • Headaches or jaw pain • Sciatica and other nerve related symptoms like numbness and tingling • Tendonitis, Bursitis and Plantar Fasciitis • Joint pain especially in your shoulder, knee or wrist • Generalized dull, achy pain • Athletic performance issues
HOW DOES HEALTHY FASCIA BECOME UNHEALTHY FASCIA? This happens when extra layers of fascia grow due to stress, trauma, repetitive motions, dehydration and inflammation. Inflammation comes from repetitive working out or even eating inflammatory foods such as (but not limited to) sugar, fried food, certain oils and processed wheat.

COUNTS!
With over 30 years of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgical experience, Dr Wolin and his staff not only Talk the Talk… they also Walk the Walk. Listen to what his patients have to say about their care and surgical results… (Verified independent interview) Just a few months ago I got a good closeup view of my lips in the mirror. I was horrified. How could I possibly have gotten so many wrinkles in not only my lips but also in the areas surrounding my mouth? I never even smoked cigarettes..I immediately decided that I would try and remedy the situation. I went to a local spa where I was told that a temporary filler combined with a standard skin peel would solve my problems. After undergoing multiple injections, it was evident that the solution to my problem not in a little jar of magical potions nor in a minuscule injection of temporary filler. The problem could only be solved by a combination of permanent volumizing as well as resurfacing my skin. I had heard of Dr wolin and his greater than 25 year experience using Fat Transfer techniques to revolumize and smooth wrinkles around the mouth. I also found that he was using a fantastic chemical peel resurfacing technique called “ The Croton Oil Peel” which produced amazing smoothing of the skin without the downtime associated with Laser Resurfacing. In just 45 minutes, under local anesthesia, I have been able to reclaim my deflated and wrinkled mouth…My results were amazing…natural and permanent.

20-Minute Bodyweight Burner Get a serious sweat session from anywhere
This is one of my favorite go-to 20-minute sweat sessions for busy professionals who travel or just can’t make it to the gym for a workout. The simple setup: set the clock for 40 seconds of work and 20 seconds of rest for all four exercises, completing four total cycles in 20 minutes. Your heart rate will be pumping and leave you dripping some serious sweat when its all finished.

THE BREAKDOWN: 40 seconds of work, 20 seconds of rest (X4) for each of the following movements: Split Squat – Right and Left Leg T-Pushups Skater Hops Inchworms
Split Squats Assume a staggered stance with the rear foot elevated and front foot forward, pushing through the heel. Hold a dumbbell in each hand or go bodyweight only depending on your ability level. Start by slowly descending, dropping your knee and hip to lower your body down to the floor then returning to your starting position. Skater Hops Stand with your weight on your right foot, now push to your left by pushing off with your right leg. Land on your left foot, lifting your right leg off the floor
behind you. Continue pushing laterally back and forth. If needed, tap your back foot on the floor behind you for balance. T-Pushups Assume a standard pushup position straight-line head to heel. Lower your body until your chest nearly touches the floor. As you push yourself back up, rotate one side of your body up as you raise the same side arm your toward the ceiling, letting your eyes follow your hand. Return to the starting position and perform another pushup. Alternate from left to right with each repetition.
Inchworms Begin to walk your hands forward without moving your feet (your heels will begin to rise off the floor). Continue walking yourself forward until you reach a full push-up position where your spine, hips and head are level with the floor (stiff line head to heel). Complete one full range of motion pushup and then walk your hands back to your feet until you are vertical once again in the starting position.

Overcoming Gymtimidation A few tips to help you feel confident at the gym
As many as 50% of Americans feel self-conscious about working out at the gym, according to a recent study. Don’t let “gymtimidation” prevent you from experiencing the health and wellness benefits of exercise. Overcome that nagging voice in your head and feel great at the gym by following a few simple guidelines.
Have a plan Write your workouts or sign up with a personal trainer who can ensure you have homework on the days you are not working with them. A lot of anxiety comes from walking into a packed gym and not having a plan. Having a plan both saves you time and helps you learn about your facility. When is it busy? Who is in the

facility and can assist when you have questions or concerns? This also helps you have a backup strategy in place in case your desired equipment is unavailable. You will be ready to apply progressions, regressions, and supplemental exercises to still get that lift you’re looking for! Another reason to write your workouts is that it will make you go. The psychology behind writing your workout down will drive you to get to the gym and complete the workout, even if you’re feeling intimidated. “If you ink it, you think it.” Focus on you It’s natural to think that all eyes are on you when working out in a gym, especially if you are nervous and haven’t established your confidence yet. If you focus with heavy intent on your workout and reaching your goals, then you won’t have time or energy to focus on those around you. Put on those headphones and crank up whatever music makes you feel great. Bring a friend to the fitness party When feeling intimated by the gym, find someone who can be a fitness mentor, or even just a buddy. There is something comforting about being with a friend in the gym, even if they are intimidated as well. Attacking the gym anxiety as a team can be very beneficial. You can share stories and laughs as you fight through it together.

If you have a friend who is very familiar with the gym, they can be a great resource for you, too. Lean on them until you feel confident enough to fly on your own. C
Take a class and speak to your M instructor Y Taking a class is a fantastic way to CM meet several memMY bers who just might be in the same boat CY as you. Tons of folks take classes CMY because it’s easy toK blend in. Be sure to introduce yourself to your instructor. They will never use this to embarrass you, but a quick introduction lets them know to watch and perhaps cue a little differently to ensure you are getting the maximum benefit of the class. Instructors are also great at making different suggestions for members based on what their goals are. Believe in yourself It’s important to keep in mind that everyone has started where you are today. No one gets to where they want to be overnight. If you feel someone watching you at the gym, keep in mind that they could be admiring your hard work and dedication. In fitness you don’t practice perfection, you practice consistency. If you keep up with dedicated practice, then you will soon be the one everyone is looking up to and aspires to be at the gym.

Deprivation Destroying Diets Stop restricting and allow freedom with four easy-to-follow tips
Summer is here and that means people are lounging by the pool, wearing bikinis, and trying to be at the top of their game with their fitness and nutrition. Motivation is high to look and feel good this time of year, which means people are more inclined to try more extreme means of dieting for weight loss. There are diet pills and extra supplements being used as a means of “quick fixes for people who did not reach their goals in time. There are also intense diet plans going around, and people depriving themselves of sugar, salt, alcohol, and any other fun type of carb in hopes of reaching their goals in time. Forget the trends and follow these four tips for a healthy, free way of living.

Allow Flexibility Many people try to reach their goals by restricting something in their diet, whether it’s sugar, carbs, fats, salty foods, etc. They eliminate these things completely and will not allow themselves to have it for a certain amount of time. Almost always, they will “mess up,” cave in, and allow themselves that thing, only resulting in feeling discouraged and defeated. In more severe cases, the person will then binge eat from the shame and guilt that came from it all, and the vicious cycle starts over again. Depriving completely can be an ongoing pattern that is counteractive with reaching your goals for the long term.
The biggest misconception is that you have to eliminate something you enjoy completely in order to reach your goals. If you understand what amount your body needs and you are consistent with it, you can actually have your cake and eat it, too. Restricting does not always have to be the answer. Follow the 80/20 Rule First and foremost,
to lose body fat you need to be in a calorie deficit. This is the number of calories that your body needs slightly below maintenance level in order to lose body fat. Once this amount is figured out, you can actually live and thrive off of the 80/20 rule. Calories matter most, so your body won’t gain fat from fun foods if you are still in the calorie deficit range each day. This
means, 80% of your daily caloric intake needs to be healthy, clean, nutrient-dense foods. Think of your typical “healthy” foods; fruits, veggies, protein, whole grains, and so on. From there, every single day if you wanted, you can have 20% of your daily caloric intake be “fun” foods; think a glass of wine, a cookie, or a small bowl of chips. Here’s an example: If your calorie deficit
amount is 1,700 calories, you should be eating 1,360 “clean” calories, and can have 340 “fun” calories every single day and still lose body fat, without restricting! Eat a “Treat” Meal If allowing yourself some flexibility every day is not something you can handle, incorporating a weekly “treat” meal is another great alternative
to not restricting completely. That is, once a week you can allow yourself a fun meal or treat, within reason, and still reach your goals, assuming you are in a calorie deficit. This allows you to still have some freedom and flexibility without feeling completely restricted. It also gives you something to look forward to each week! Move On If you are restricting and do cave into cravings, the best thing to do is move on the next day. Start over and do not beat yourself up. Continuing the pattern of shame and regret with food will only allow the cycle to continue. Get back on track as soon as you can and do the best you can.

Hello, summer! While there are just under 300 days per year of sunshine on average in Phoenix (that’s almost 100 more days than the U.S. average!), the sun gets even more attention during the summer months. Before you get out and have some fun in the sun, learn a bit the largest object in our solar system.
1. Massive impact. The sun accounts for 99.8% of the mass in the solar system. It has a mass of around 330,000 times that of Earth. 2. Tick-tock. The average distance from the sun to the Earth is about 150 million km and it takes eight minutes for light to reach Earth from the sun. This energy can reach Earth in mere minutes, but it takes millions of years to travel from the sun’s core to its surface. 3. Middle-aged. The sun is 4.5 billion years old, which astronomers believe to be about half its lifespan.

as there are much bigger stars out there. 5. VIP. The Sun is the most important celestial body from the Earth’s point of view as it maintains all life, giving us light and heat. 6. Component talk. Approximately 74% of the sun’s mass comes from hydrogen and 24% is helium. The remaining 2% includes trace amounts of iron, nickel, oxygen, and all the other elements we have in the solar system. 7. A dime a dozen. Our galaxy, aka the Milky Way, is home to about 100 billion other suns. 8. Hot, hot, hot! The sun is very hot, with its core being the hottest at a scorching 15 million degrees Celsius. The surface is relatively cool at 6,000 degrees Celsius.

The Joke’s on Us! So go ahead and laugh already—hey, it’s good for you! Three people were riding in a car; a hardware technician, a systems analyst and a programmer. The systems analyst is driving and when they come to a steep hill he finds that the brakes have failed and the car is accelerating out of control. So, he pumps the emergency brake, downshifts the gears, and rubs the wheels’ rims against the curb. He finally wrestles the car to a stop. The three climb out and assess the situation. The hardware tech says, “Let’s try and fix it. I’ll crawl under the car and take a look.” The systems analyst replies, “I think we should get someone qualified to fix it, a specialist in brakes.” The programmer says, “Why don’t we just get back in and see if it happens again?”

UFC competitor Sean O’Malley talks his undefeated record, adventurous style and comeback to the sport

There is no other mixed martial arts promotion company quite like the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Known for hosting worldwide events that feature the highest-level fighters, other organizations pale in comparison to the multibillion-dollar enterprise. The fights are thrilling, the crowd is energizing, and the fighters bring their own unique style to the combat sport. “Suga” Sean O’Malley is one of UFC’s most colorful fighters. His loud getups and fighting chops, which garnered him an undefeated record, immediately turned heads. People wanted to know where on earth this impressive and young competitor came from.
Cage Calling
UFC fighters, sports broadcasters and spectators will tell you that O’Malley came onto the scene straight out of the woodwork. In truth, he hails from the Queen City of the Rockies, or Helena, Montana. Unencumbered by what others thought, O’Malley marched to the beat of his own drum as soon as he could walk. “I’ve always been very driven, outspoken, energetic and creative, even when I was a kid,” he says. His childhood dream was to become an NFL player. That dream quickly faded once O’Malley was introduced to martial arts at age 16. His tall and slender frame had him competing at the amateur level in the bantamweight division, a weight class of competitors who range from 123 pounds to 135 pounds. Taking to the cage like a pro, light on his feet and extremely fluid, O’Malley found his new calling. “I realized I could make a career out of fighting when I

started watching UFC more, so when I was about 17 or 18 years old,” he explains. O’Malley has been professionally competing as a mixed martial artist since 2013. A handful of his first fights were in his native state, and his first fight outside of Montana was in North Dakota against David Nuzzo. In this fight, O’Malley performed something out of a Jackie Chan movie. His stunning spinning hook kick knocked his opponent out and secured him a spot on Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series, a weekly UFC show established to find new talent. “The Contender Series was a good night for me. I knew I would get a contract if I went out there and performed well, and I did.” O’Malley adds, “I got to meet Snoop Dogg [that night], too.” The tattooed Montanan with the full, curly hair made his UFC debut against Terrion Ware in December 2017 – and he won. Next, he fought and beat Andre Soukhamthath in March 2018. It became clear that O’Malley wouldn’t stand to be called a rookie for long. In fact, he made it known that when he fought, spectators weren’t just watching UFC, but they were also experiencing “The Sugar Show.” “Sugar [is my nickname] and it came from my first coach, Johnny Aho. He called me that because he thought I was so sweet to watch fight,” O’Malley explains.
The Comeback Kid
O’Malley was without a doubt one of UFC’s most attractive up-and-comers to watch. His tenacity to win was gripping, his
kooky style was refreshing and he seemed unstoppable. But then The Sugar Show was forced to take an extended intermission. “I tore my labrum a few years ago and it got to the point where I couldn’t train on it anymore. The tear got longer and required [two] surgeries,” O’Malley explains. His seven-month-long recovery brought his fighting career to a complete standstill. Despite this, O’Malley remains extremely optimistic about picking up where he left off. “The best piece of advice I’ve received is to take care of your body, which is what I’m doing right now,” he says. “There are no nerves approaching my comeback, just pure excitement.” He will step back into the UFC cage, coined the Octagon, early next month in Las Vegas to fight against Marlon Vera. O’Malley certainly has a long way to go to prepare for the match, but he’s eager and excited to do the work necessary.
Training, Gaming and Sugar Style
The 24-year-old has called Arizona his second home for five years. He trains at Phoenix’s premier mixed martial arts center, The MMA Lab, where he trains with owner and head coach John Crouch, as well as Augusto Mendes and Tim Welch. The dedicated fighter works out anywhere from eight to 12 times a week. “I warm up first and then, depending on the day, hit mitts, wrestle, spar, grapple or focus on strength and conditioning,” he says. Recovery is key. O’Malley never shies away from a coldwater immersion and dip in the hot tub after every session. Nutrition is another biggie. He and his partner Danya practice clean eating year-round. “I don’t meal prep. I eat organic foods only. My girl cooks for me and helps me stay consistent with my diet,” he explains. Real and responsibly sourced foods is an important subject matter for this UFC fighter. One of O’Malley’s personal goals is to one day own and operate a compound where his family and friends can grow their own food and raise their own animals. Another one of his dreams? “I’d also like to get on Dancing with the Stars someday,” he chuckles. With a fan following of 425,000 on Instagram (follow him @sugaseanmma) and his flashy style that pulls from the King of Pop and Jimi Hendrix, something tells us that O’Malley was born to be a contestant on the ABC dancing competition show. “My vibe is funky, wild and creative. It’s Sugar style! I just like to wear stuff that most people can’t or wouldn’t dare to pull off,” he says. When he isn’t donning a perfectly teased hairstyle, yellowcolored shades or tie-dye anything, O’Malley likes to connect with his fans on Twitch, a streaming platform for gamers (sugashow_og). As an avid gamer himself, his channel allows him to play games with his fans, chat with them and do frequent giveaways. “I have a really good relationship with my fans. They mean a lot to me,” he explains. For more information, visit www.ufc.com/athlete/sean-omalley.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST FALL IN LOVE WITH HOCKEY? I actually fell in love with hockey when I was 4 years old and was introduced to the Mighty Ducks movies. I was a huge Disney kid and there was something about that movie that just made me want to be a hockey player. My parents got me the plastic skates that strap onto my shoes and I would just skate up and down the driveway for hours. Finally, my dad put a stick in my hand and I was hooked! I started playing inline hockey when I was 5 and ice hockey when I was 6. The rest is history! WHAT WAS THE BEST PART ABOUT COMPETING IN THE 2014 OLYMPICS? The most incredible thing was being able to represent Arizona. I’m the first hockey player, male or female, from the state of Arizona to play ice hockey in the Olympics and the first Arizona-born Olympian to win a medal at the Winter Olympics. I knew that going into the games and to be able to represent my state
and he realized I could offer more than just hockey coaching and brought me on full time in November of 2018 to be a hockey ambassador and his special advisor. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WORKING WITH THE NEXT GENERATION? For me, coaching the next generation of Arizona girls hockey players is extremely personal. I tell people all the time that the reason I coach is because every opportunity, friendship, childhood memory and my education has come through hockey and I want to provide those things for the kids I coach. They are a ton of fun and to know that you’re giving them more than just hockey skills is incredibly rewarding. IS THERE ANYTHING YOU HOPE TO PASS ON TO THE KIDS YOU’RE COACHING? I think anyone who coaches youth sports hopes to teach kids more than just the technical aspects of the game. The real purpose of coaching is to help develop quality people. Hockey is a sport that teaches lessons like teamwork, perseverance and self-confidence so those are the bigger things that I hope to pass on. CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE PROGRAM? The Arizona Kachinas Hockey Association is the excusive girls hockey association in the state of Arizona. We have elite teams that will travel for competition and development teams that play here in Arizona. We also
on the international stage was incredible. HOW DID YOUR JOURNEY LEAD YOU TO THE ARIZONA COYOTES AND ARIZONA KACHINAS? I grew up playing hockey in the same rink as the Coyotes’ Director of Amateur Hockey Development Matt Shott, who has always had my back. In 2015, we started talking about what it would take to really grow girls’ hockey in the state of Arizona. The timing all worked out really well because as soon as we had developed our plan to build girls hockey by focusing on the young girls at the base, the NHL launched a program called the Industry Growth Fund (IGF). Matt applied for our Small Frys all girls development program and we received the grant. I started as a contracted employee who was brought in to run the Small Frys program while I was finishing up my MBA at ASU. During that time, I met our current CEO, Ahron Cohen. We bounced some ideas around
have our small Frys program for girls who are beginners which is designed to feed into the Kachinas girls program. Our mission is to provide every female hockey player in the state of Arizona the opportunity to play the sport they love in the state they love with girls who are just like them. WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH IN YOUR NEW EXPANDED ROLE? When I was hired on for this expanded role, my main objective was to help grow youth hockey in the Valley. So currently, my primary focus is ensuring that the Kachinas Association is successfully launched in its inaugural season and operates with a sustainable business model long term. Given my background, girls hockey is where I can make the greatest impact here and now but I also hope to expand the contribution of my advisory projects to help serve the Coyotes Organizations, which ultimately will ensure sustainable community hockey development in Arizona.
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED ABOUT YOURSELF SINCE YOU’VE STARTED COACHING? I think along the way I’ve learned about myself that I care more about teaching life lessons that I care about winning. That’s why I think I actually fit better with development players rather than elite competitive players. I think moving forward, I’ll let myself push girls more and remember that I don’t always need to be the “nice coach.” Sometimes teaching life lessons means being a little stricter and earning the players’ respect. IF YOU COULD GIVE YOURSELF ONE PIECE OF ADVICE WHEN YOU WERE YOUNGER, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Work hard and have fun. I let hockey feel like a job as I got older rather than something I was thankful I got to do every day. Now I wish I could go back and just remember how incredible each and every day was as a youth hockey player.

One Plus One Equals Three In any good relationship, when two people come together, it creates something very special that is more than the sum of its parts. When two people fill in the natural gaps of the other person, while this is working simultaneously and harmoniously, the relationship becomes a living entity all on its own. And if you are in a really good relationship, then you know what we mean. Even others from the outside will notice also; that there is a special energy when you both walk in the room, that is larger than each of you, that is larger than life. This special type of relationship is dictated by both conscious and unconscious forces, some things we can influence and control, and others that we cannot. Consciously, we can make direct decisions to truly desire to enhance our partner, be there for them, and make the needed sacrifices for the sake of the relationship. Unconsciously, there can be forces and influences that can be harder for us to control. One of these unconscious forces is our physical state as we age, and the hormonal balance that affects our ability to think clearly, make enhanced

and complicated decisions, energize our positions and motivations, and stimulate us sexually, all of which are important in maintaining a healthy and cohesive relationship. Relationships are affected by the influences of hormonal imbalance, particularly our desire to connect intimately. Estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone, are vital to the energetic synergy of our sexual impulses, drives, and motivations. As we age, as soon as our 30s, these hormones begin to decline and start to provide unconscious influences in our relationships, dampening that spark that used to be easily kindled. Other hormones such as oxytocin, an important bonding hormone, will affect both men and women, as they age and will burden the ability to have a deeper connection that leads to a healthy sexual appetite. Fortunately, there are answers. There is a very old saying that “healing is always a possibility” and this includes our hormones and our relationships. Here are some distinct ways you can begin to restore and improve your relationships now.
RELATIONSHIPS ARE AFFECTED BY THE INFLUENCES OF HORMONAL IMBALANCE, PARTICULARLY OUR DESIRE TO CONNECT INTIMATELY.
Practice Self-care. When we pause for a moment and really focus on what we really want and need, and then take action toward fulfilling our desires and needs, then we reap all of the benefits for ourselves and then have the capacity to continue to give to our partner. If you are not taking care of yourself, how can you take care of someone else? Make your relationship a priority. You have to be honest and ask where you place your personal relationship in the order of what you value. If you want your relationship to improve, and flourish, then prioritize. Really prioritize. Take direct action on behalf of your partner and your relationships. After you have thought about it, read articles about it, you have to take definitive action on a daily basis toward doing for your partner and yourself. As you give, you will begin to receive.Â
Consider having your hormones rebalanced and optimized. Volumes have been written about the benefits of hormones and specifically how it creates a spark in your mind and motivation in everything you do. There are countless patient testimonials about the benefits of hormones. The process of properly restoring your hormonal balance is a rebirth for your life and a renewal of your relationships. The world of hormones is a specific medical discipline that takes years of experience and training to really understand how to wield this tool correctly. Be sure to seek out medical professionals who understand how to have the honest conversation with you and your partner about hormones and intimate relationships and lead you both back to that special something you have always had.

a discrete location, like behind the ear, and then wait a few weeks to see how the skin responds. Lasers can be safely used for all skin tones as long as you select a knowledgeable provider. If you have hyperpigmentation from a laser, don’t despair. There are several ways to get your skin looking beautiful again. Prescription hydroquinone cream, kojic-acid pads, and treating the discolored area with a different wavelength laser can all help to even out the dark areas and create a uniform color to the skin. It takes time and commitment to reverse hyperpigmentation and is worth the effort. Burns are another common laser complication. Inexperienced laser providers can cause burns through improper use of the device. Burns happen when too much concentrated energy is delivered to the same area and can show up as blisters after a treatment, track marks on the skin, and excessively painful areas. It is essential that burned areas be quickly cooled. Topical steroids and protective balms can help repair the damaged skin and prevent infection. A skilled physician may use prescription products to reduce the profile and appearance of the scar and may even use a different laser to try to get the burned area to match the surrounding tissue. Finally, money should never be the determining factor. If a laser treatment is offered at a price that seems too good to be true, it probably is. It isn’t worth saving a few bucks when your face and peace of mind could suffer long-term damage. So how do you get the benefits of a laser without the complications? 1. Make sure you are visiting a licensed provider. 2. Ask about the provider’s qualifications—how many patients have they treated? How long have they had the device? Have they had any complications? 3. Understand your goals and do your research. Make sure the treatment will address your goal – hair removal lasers will not make your skin look younger or take care of pigment. The provider has to have the right tool for the job.
Don’t Get Burned Mistakes to avoid when lasering
As a top five aesthetic market in the United States, the Valley is full of providers ready to treat your skin with the newest laser device. Lasers can remove unwanted hair, blast away brown spots, erase spider veins, and create younger-looking skin by stimulating collagen and reducing fine lines and wrinkles. But buyers beware — a laser in the wrong hands can create lasting damage that can be difficult to repair. Lasers work by delivering concentrated energy into a cell, causing it to die without impacting the surrounding tissue. This breaks up pigment, stimulates collagen, and causes damaged skin cells to go away. Complications occur when too much heat is built up in the skin. The most common complications are hyperpigmentation, burns, and infection. Hyperpigmentation is when the treated skin gets darker after a laser. It happens frequently in patients with darker skin tones. To avoid the risk of hyperpigmentation, make sure to select a provider who has extensive experience treating patients who have darker skin. The provider should also do a test spot in

Listen Up, Guys Tune in to men’s hearing loss
Men and their loud lifestyles Men’s lifestyles and occupations explain their higher rates of hearing loss. From farming to military service, construction work to manufacturing plants, more men work in noisy environments or use loud tools. Men’s recreational activities can be loud, too. Think of the noise levels generated by woodworking, metalworking, hunting, motorcycling, leaf blowers and other power tools. Loud noises cause ear damage Chronic exposure to loud noises can take a permanent toll on your hearing, damaging the sensory and nerve cells in the inner ears. Personal audio devices are common culprits – especially ear buds that fit directly inside the ear canal. Whatever audio device you use, limit the volume around half to three-fourths of highest setting, and keep listening sessions to one hour or less.
Men are often accused of being poor listeners, especially by their spouses. In truth, they may have poor hearing. While 23% of adults have some form of hearing loss, the majority – 60% – are men. Higher-pitched sounds, including softer women’s and children’s voices, are often the first to go.
Many causes of hearing loss Aging impacts your hearing, too. By the time people are in their 60s, many will notice a change in their hearing.
Other causes of hearing loss can include heredity, ear infections or injuries and high fevers. Most people are surprised to learn that certain medications may also cause sudden hearing loss, particularly some medications used in the treatment of cancer, antiinflammatory drugs like NSAIDs, and certain medications to treat erectile dysfunction. If you have sudden hearing loss – especially in one ear – or experience sudden vertigo or dizziness, see your family physician or ENT doctor promptly. Hearing is key to well-being Hearing loss isn’t just annoying or inconvenient, it can also be embarrassing and that can cause people to stop participating in social activities. Social isolation can easily lead to depression or anxiety. Hearing loss can also impair your ability to learn, perform well at work and hear important cues that help you safely navigate your surroundings. Signs and symptoms to look out for Watch for these signs and symptoms of hearing loss:
Muffled-sounding conversations and environmental sounds Difficulty understanding words, especially in a crowd Trouble hearing consonants Needing to ask others to repeat themselves or speak up Needing to increase radio or TV volume Although most hearing loss can’t be reversed, a hearing specialist or audiologist can help by recommending the right hearing solution for you. Many devices are nearly invisible, too. Almost half of all hearing loss is preventable, so take steps to protect the hearing you have by limiting your exposure to excessive noise. When it can’t be avoided, use ear plugs, available at most drug stores, and remember to position the soft plugs deeply in the ear canal to be effective. Hearing loss can take a toll on a man’s quality of life. It deserves your attention during Men’s Health Month (June) – and always!
