Some people work their whole lives to make their childhood dream a reality. Sometimes, however, someone sets on out on a path and finds out later that they were meant to do something entirely different. Scott Holtzman can attest to the latter. First, he pursued his passion in sociology, then turned professional in the hockey arena, and then went to the corporate world. However, it wasn’t until he started fighting in Knoxville, Tennessee that he realized UFC was the path he was meant to take. We talked to him about his part-time residence in Scottsdale, becoming Scott “Hot Sauce” Holtzman, and his upcoming fight on page 54. Not sure what your vision for your life is? On page 32, we are sharing tips on how to focus your goals to the point where they are actually attainable. If your goals are fitness-related, flip to page 18 for tricks to getting the most out of your workout. And, if you’re in need of a good workout routine, page 30 highlights one using nothing but your body and resistance bands. In terms of healthy eating, page 24 covers some happy hour spots where you can have fun with your friends without straying from your healthy eating habits. On page 22, we’re sharing a chickpea salad sandwich recipe that won’t leave you missing the meat. Lastly, if you’re stuck in a macro-counting diet and having a tough time, page 34 will help you transition to intuitive eating. If you’re looking for a technological upgrade at home, page 40 showcases “smart” gadgets for your home, and page 20 has a portable, high-tech treadmill that will have you on your feet in no time. Happy walking!

Protect Your Peepers If you are in the sun, you are well aware that you should have sunblock on. (After all, we ARE in Arizona!) There’s a new checklist item to add to those days in the sun – sunglasses! The American Academy of Ophthalmology recently issued an advisory on the damage that sun exposure can cause to the eyes, including diseases such as cataracts. If you’re in the sun, even in the winter, have those shades on! Source: www.healthline.com.
In a national survey of more than 1,300 people aged 14 to 22, 87 percent of subjects said they’d looked for some sort of health information online, including 39 percent who looked up information about depression.
New Prescription Drugs Thanks to At-Home DNA Tests With the rise of the at-home DNA tests, there have been questions as to “what’s next with all that DNA?!” Wonder no more. Home DNA test results from the 5 million customers of testing company, 23andMe will now be used by drug giant GlaxoSmithKline to design new drugs. The first project will look at possible new drugs for treating Parkinson’s disease, based on a gene called LRRK2 that is mutated in some Parkinson’s patients. Social Media to the Rescue Depression is a real struggle, and thanks to social media, its becoming more socially acceptable to talk about. And, teens are taking notice. If you search #depression on Instagram, you’ll get a prompt asking “Can we help?” with the links for support. Younger people in general are going online for health information. One study found that 87 percent of younger subjects said they’d looked for some sort of health information online, including 39 percent who said they’d looked up information about depression. But just 20 percent said they’d used messaging, apps, or texting on video chats to actually connect with a health professional. While getting information and seeking answers is a vital key in the fight against mental illness, its important to also seek professional help. Source: www. nbcnews.com.
UNDERSTANDING NEUROPATHY
Dr. Richard Jacoby, Scottsdale’s leading Podiatry expert answers your questions Q: WHAT IS PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY? A: Your nervous system is divided into two regions – central and
peripheral. The central system includes the brain and spinal cord, while the peripheral system includes all the nerve roots and extremity nerves emanating from it. It’s a broad network, and all of these peripheral nerves transmit vital motor and sensory information throughout the body. A peripheral neuropathy may interrupt or distort some of these transmissions. Diabetic neuropathy and chemo neuropathy are two of the most prevalent kinds.
Q: WHAT CAUSES PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY? A: The most common cause of peripheral neuropathy is diabetes.
Sometimes the cause is completely unknown (idiopathic). Here are some other potential causes for neuropathy: • • • • • • •
Autoimmune disorders rheumatoid arthritis or lupus Chronic kidney disease Infections such as HIV and liver infections Low levels of vitamin B12 or other problems with your diet Poor blood flow to the legs Underactive thyroid gland Toxin exposure such as lead, mercury, and solvents may lead to peripheral neuropathy. • Pharmaceutical drugs used to treat infections, cancer, seizures, or high blood pressure.
Q: WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF NEUROPATHY? A: Signs and symptoms include: • Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet that gradually move upward into the extremities • Pain that is sharp or throbbing • Severe sensitivity to touch • Poor coordination • Frequent falls • Muscle weakness • Paralysis
ASK US ABOUT A STEM CELL SOLUTION FOR YOUR NEUROPATHY AND NON HEALING ULCERS
EXTREMITY HEALTH CENTER UNIQUE MEDICAL SOLUTIONS
Q: WHAT KIND OF TREATMENTS EXIST FOR PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY? A: There are several treatments available for peripheral neuropathy. • Medications, including pain medications, neurologic modifying agents, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSDAIDs), and antidepressants • Surgery, including the Dellon® Procedure for diabetic neuropathy or nerve release for mono-neuropathies like carpal tunnel syndrome • Calmare® device, a non-invasive FDA-cleared medical device shown to effectively alleviate pain associated with neuropathy • Laser therapy using specific wavelengths of light having a strong anti-inflammatory effect on tissues that help decrease pain • Injections, including steroids, numbing agents, and stem-cell rich anti-inflammatory injections Despite treatments on the market, many patients come to Extremity Health Centers reporting their doctor was unable to alleviate their pain. Dr. Jacoby welcomes challenging cases and has achieved unprecedented results in many of these patients. If you suffer from peripheral neuropathy that has not been successfully treated despite medications, schedule a consultation with Dr. Jacoby today to learn more.

news Get That Vitamin D A new study reveals that individuals with higher levels of belly fat and larger waistlines are more likely to have lower vitamin D levels. In addition, researchers found that vitamin D might protect against heart failure, diabetes, and cancer, and that vitamin D deficiency causes hair loss. Vitamin D deficiency has traditionally been linked to bone health, but it may also have a role to play in respiratory tract infections and autoimmune disease, among others. Stop Smoking, Start Exercising For middle-aged women who worry about adding pounds when they quit smoking, a new study suggests that adding even a modest amount of weekly exercise after quitting can minimize weight gain. To minimize the weight gain, the female participants found the most success when they engaged in 150 minutes of moderate activity per week. However, even walking for a weekly total of about 90 minutes at 3 mph was enough to minimize weight gain after smoking cessation.
DNA Lowdown With a new algorithm, scientists have created a powerful tool to calculate a person’s inherited risks for five deadly diseases: heart disease, breast cancer, Type 2 diabetes, chronic inflammatory bowel disease and atrial fibrillation. The researchers are now building a website that will allow anyone to upload genetic data receive risk scores the five diseases, even if they are on the low end of the risk spectrum.

The Part-time Diet Many people on the ketogenic diet are likely trying to lose weight, but because of the diet’s restrictions, it can be hard to stick to. This can lead to dangerous eating habits such as yo-yo dieting, or the never-ending cheat day. Enter, “keto-cycling.” It’s a more lenient take on the ketogenic diet that lets people “cycle” in and out of ketosis with a single day where carbs are OK. The rationale is that by allowing people to have carbs once a week, they will be more fulfilled with their diet, therefore they will stick to it and maintain healthy eating habits.

An Egg a Day Keeps the Heart Disease Away Eating an egg a day may lower your risk of cardiovascular disease, according to a new study. People who eat eggs every day had an 18 percent lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, which manifests as heart attacks and strokes, compared with adults who avoided eggs in this particular instance. Though eggs contain highquality protein and other positive nutritional components, they also have high amounts of cholesterol, which was previously believed to have been harmful. But the study agrees, small amounts of eggs daily may lower your risks.

your rest periods and increase your intensity. This can be done through the compound movements or circuit training.
5 Ways to Get the Most out of Your Workout We know exercising is important, but often hectic schedules and other responsibilities can get in the way or eat into our time at the gym. Even if you have endless amounts of time to exercise, it’s still important to get the most out of your workouts to improve strength, endurance and overall fitness. So, how do you get the most out of your workouts? Read on for five tips to make your time in the gym impactful, fun and keep you coming back.
1. Compound movements This means performing two exercises at once. Compound movements, such as squatting while doing a shoulder press, result in a higher heart rate and use two to three muscle groups at a time instead of focusing on just one. Often compound movements challenge our balance, require more focus and can be more impactful overall. 2. Decrease your rest to work ratio This helps translate the “work harder, not longer” idea. If you only have a short period of time to exercise, decrease
3. Compete with a friend Grab a buddy and make your exercises a friendly competition. For example, if you are doing one movement pattern for “X” amount of time, try to do as few reps as possible. This may seem counterintuitive but really slowing down your movements increases intensity. Or do the opposite, and try to do the most reps in “X” amount of time. Then in between exercises (squats, lunges, abs etc.) try bear crawl or sprint, or use it as an active recovery. In both the reps (fast or slow) and the active rest, “compete” against your friend. 4. Cross training Mixing up your “typical” workout routine with different activities will keep things interesting. Sometimes we get in a workout “rutt,” so doing something different can help you feel more excited to workout. Trying different exercise methods and movement patterns also keeps your body moving in different planes of motion, which can help decrease
the risk of injury. Moving your body in different directions, patterns and with different volume is going to be the best way to keep your body as healthy, mobile and functional as possible. There are many ways to mix things up – online workout videos, signing up for classes at new studios like Pilates, yoga, spin, or even choosing a different activity at your gym. 5. Keep a backup plan Oftentimes in the summer or during the holidays, finding time to get into the gym or maintain a routine can be challenging. It will be easier to maintain your fitness momentum and keep your spirits up if you have a “just in case” backup plan in your back pocket! For example, if you have a vacation planned, bring a couple resistance bands in your suitcase and write down an exercise plan that you can do in the morning before your activities begin. Even if it is only 30 minutes per day, you will feel accomplished and energized for getting a workout in. Making your exercise plan achievable under any circumstances is the key to transitioning it from a routine to a lifestyle.

PREPLESS VENEERS
Transforming Patient’s Smiles Truly prepless veneers, with zero anesthetic used.
The conventional process of applying dental veneers generally involves shaving away a significant portion of the tooth. In many cases, temporary dental veneers must be worn while the permanent dental veneers are manufactured in a lab. Because a prepless porcelain veneer is as thin as a contact lens, the porcelain veneer application process requires little to no tooth reduction. The veneers are bonded to your teeth and you are left with the shape and color you’ve always wanted. The material is incredibly durable, and we stand behind them with a 5 year guarantee against breakage. The process is less invasive than the traditional porcelain veneer process. Most patients find that they immediately enjoy their new smiles without any post-procedure discomfort or sensitivity. You will be amazed at how beautiful, natural and authentic dental veneers look.

A study found results to back up the claim: People who simply ate more fiber lost almost as much weight as others who made complicated changes to their diets. In addition to weight loss and heart health, researchers say fiber may reduce levels of chronic inflammation. Whether you get your daily fiber through beans, legumes or supplements, fiber may just help you drop those last few pounds a little easier. Source: www.cnn.com
Is Moving in the Morning Really Better?
Each morning, exercisers rise and grind to head to the gym and sneak in that early workout to lose weight. It’s been said by experts in the past that exercising first thing in the morning helps your body burn more fat, but is it true? There have been studies showing that the body has better results from an early-morning workout because your body is forced to use your body fat to power your workout in the morning. However, since then, researchers have learned that it’s not that simple. While there are some legit benefits to a morning exercise – levels of testosterone are high and it can help you mentally start your day off right or put the workout off altogether – there are now studies that show that your body may be physically primed for its best workout later in the day, and post-dinner exercise has its own unique benefits. The moral of the story is that workout timing likely has little relevance in most people’s weight-loss success. Remember that consistency is key and whenever you can get the most out of your workout is the best time for you, as long as you’re getting there. Source: www.health.usnews.com.

Get Spicy Struggling with kicking that salt or sugar craving? Turn up the heat. Research has shown that simply spicing up your diet may help you consume less salt and possibly less sugar, while potentially improving your health even beyond the reduction of salt and sugar. On your next meal, skip the salt and add some pepper. Source: www. sciencedaily.com.
A Gut Feeling A preliminary study published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings suggests that, for some people, specific activities of gut bacteria may be responsible for their inability to lose weight, despite adherence to strict diet and exercise regimens. According to the Mayo Clinic, gut bacteria have the capacity to break down complex food particles, which provide us with additional energy. The hope is that this study will help provide more individualized strategies for people who struggle with obesity. Source: www. sciencedaily.com.
THE EFFECTIVE MEDICAL MASSAGE: MYOFASCIAL THERAPY
Dr. Bryan Geier talks a new treatment for pain management Wouldn’t it be great if you could treat the majority of all pain related symptoms with a non-invasive approach? Now, you can. As a Chiropractor, my education and training was focused on relieving pain by influencing the nervous system through the use of spinal manipulation. However, in my practice I intently focus on the myo, which is the Latin term for muscles and connective tissue called fascia. Here in lies the term Myofascial therapy. When treating pain, I chose to focus on the myofascia of the body because this is the most important component to influencing the Central Nervous System to decrease pain, specifically honing in on treating this pain by taking an alternative, non-invasive approach. Unfortunately, myofascial therapy receives little attention as a major source of pain and is seldom taught in modern medical school training. Even more unfortunate is the lack of insurance reimbursement for this important therapy. So, let’s dig into the topic a little deeper.
running through, around and crisscrossing every inch of your body including muscle, organs, blood vessels, nerves, spinal cord, brain and skin. The central nervous system receives its greatest amount of sensory nerves from myofascial tissue. This means that the fascia is as important or more important than muscle in sensory input delivery. The key to this statement is that your myofascia becomes the byproduct of your environment without you even realizing it. It experiences stress, memorizes chronic poor posture, feels the weight of your head sitting at the computer all day, and permanently holds onto old untreated injuries. As a result of never ending signaling to the brain, the body develops symptoms like pain and endocrine dysfunction like adrenal fatigue, dysfunctional mood and brain fog, to name a few. If the fascia controls the information that can influence the brain, then this is the first step to calming down the body’s pain response and also improving overall global body function.
THE SCIENCE BEHIND PAIN AND MYOFASCIA The muscular system is the largest sensory organ. Approximately 50 percent of your body weight is made up of about 400 skeletal muscles. Your fascia is actually one giant interconnected web of connective tissue
WHAT IS MYOFASCIAL THERAPY? It is a deep tissue treatment involving the breakdown of fascial adhesions known as trigger points. These trigger points ultimately create a permanently shortened muscle, resulting in pain and muscle dysfunction and, in turn, weakness and uncoordinated movements. Myofascial therapy can be performed in many ways including by a practitioner’s hands, using tools that break down adhesions and stretching. This therapy proves to be a very efficient and effective therapy for pain management, improving athletic performance and reducing cellulite.
COMMON INJURIES RELATED TO MYOFASCIAL TRIGGER POINTS • Pain or stiffness in your neck, mid- or lowback • Headaches or jaw pain • Sciatica and other nerve related symptoms like numbness and tingling • Tendonitis, Bursitis and Plantar Fasciitis • Joint pain especially in your shoulder, knee or wrist • Generalized dull, achy pain • Athletic performance issues
HOW DOES HEALTHY FASCIA BECOME UNHEALTHY FASCIA? This happens when extra layers of fascia grow due to stress, trauma, repetitive motions, dehydration and inflammation. Inflammation comes from repetitive working out or even eating inflammatory foods such as (but not limited to) sugar, fried food, certain oils and processed wheat.

Building a Better Body with Bands 6 movements that add resistance to your workout There are so many reasons to add resistance bands to your workout. There are a variety of different bands out on the market today that, when added, can take your current routine to the next level. For those that are always traveling, resistance bands are light and easily packed in a suitcase. Bands are also a great to achieve a total-body workout (and deliver some serious results!) when you have limited space or a limited budget for equipment. Here are a few total-body band burnouts (say that five times!) that we love.
1. Pull Downs This movement engages the shoulders, lats and rear deltoids. Grabbing a band, start with the arms over head and gradually pull arms down while also pulling apart, engaging the shoulder blades and lats until elbows reach shoulders. Slowly come back to start and repeat for 15 reps. Complete three sets of 15 reps total. 2. Tricep Kick Backs Hold the band in right hand, then grab

opposite shoulder. Hold the bottom of the band with your left hand, extending the hand straight down/behind the body. Slowly bring hand back up to hip level and repeat. Repeat for 15 reps then switch arms. Complete three sets of 15 reps on each arm. 3. Bicep Pulses Using a longer band with handles, step on the band (resistance depends on how far apart feet are placed from each other). Bring hands up to
a 90-degree angle, elbows locked into sides, and begin small pulses, alternating placement of arms from front to side. Repeat for eight counts of eight on each arm. Complete three sets on each side. 4. In & Out Squats Using a thicker Nylon band placed just above the knees, start in a low squat (making sure the knees stay behind the toes) with feet together. Take a wide squat jump
(with toes pointed out for inner thigh engagement) and move back to narrow jump – feet together. For lower impact, step one foot out at a time and back while keep in low squat. Then, repeat, bringing both feet in. Complete three sets of 15-20 reps, depending on ability. 6. Single Leg Pulses This movement engages the outer thighs, quadriceps, glutes and hamstrings. Using the rubber band placed
around the ankles, lift and pulse one leg forward, keeping your toe pointed and a slight bend in the knee. Keeping the same bend, rotate same leg to side and pulse, then rotate same leg behind – squeeze the glutes as you pulse. Switch legs. Complete three sets of 15-20 pulses for each leg, depending on ability.

Life by Design Five steps to focus your vision and take action
George Bernard Shaw once said, “Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.” Life requires action beyond the dream; that larger vision for growth and what we desire most is reserved for those who are willing to do. The problem, however, is that sometimes that vision is too big for the moment. This can cause us to overwhelm and result in a lack of proper planning and execution. It’s why so many never take that first step toward realizing their true potential or simply do too many of the wrong things. So, what exactly can be done to support some forward momentum which produces results? Following are five steps to connect with the vision and lock into action.

1. Frame It. Planning for the future means looking ahead without getting lost in unrealistic expectations. Where are you at today with time, money, resources and support? Planning for the “now” means looking at the year ahead and working with short-term goals that support the bigger picture. These are baby steps which you will take in the next six to 12 months. The ideal future is the one which you can encapsulate within the next three to five years – any more than that and you’re setting yourself up for failure. 2. Focus It. Once you’ve set a reasonable time frame, get clear on what it is that you want to accomplish both personally and professionally. Vision boards are great support tools which can be quite effective only if the rest of these steps are followed. The visuals of what we want to achieve serve as great inspiration and motivation. Be realistic. Can you accomplish what you’ve placed on your board within the next three to five years? Does your vision inspire you? You’re mind and body should have a physical reaction which ignites the desire to move. 3. Direct It. Where do you start? Monthly themes, weekly goals and daily actions allow you to organize and prioritize how you plan to get the work done without trying to do too much at once. Remember, nothing worth having happens overnight. Honor the process. You may be inspired
by your vision, but you must give it direction and set deadlines before you can take any action. Invest your time wisely. 4. Own It. Create your support team by speaking with other selfmotivated individuals about your ambitions. Establish accountability partners who are working toward their own objectives. When you are held accountable to someone other than yourself and when someone is being held accountable by you, the odds of producing the desired results will rise. Who will be on your team? 5. Do It. At the end of the day, achieving the dream requires a change in behavior. The plan isn’t enough. This is the difference between being committed to your vision and being compelled into action. You need to condition your mind the way a personal trainer would condition the body. The system is set. Now, you need to take consistent steps toward that vision and document your successes and successful attempts. There is no failure if you’re in action. It takes 21 days to create a new habit. It takes 90 days to make it part of your lifestyle. Repetition of these steps is the key. A life of design is created by your choices. Per Tony Robbins, “I believe life is constantly testing us for our level of commitment, and life’s greatest rewards are reserved for those who demonstrate a never-ending commitment to act until they achieve.”

The Macro Transition Five simple steps to eat intuitively
vegetables will total approximately 30 calories whereas an additional 2 ounces of rice or pasta is 100-200 calories. Being too rough with carbohydrate estimates upon adopting intuitive eating can cause weight gain unknowingly as the overages add up.
Counting macronutrients (macros), also known as flexible dieting, is a fantastic strategy for weight loss, muscle building, or maintaining your body composition while allowing you to have foods previously deemed off-limits when dieting or “eating clean.” After some time, the task can get tedious and many individuals long to step away from the tracking application to move into the realm of intuitive eating. It is a welcome mental break from the food numbers puzzle. Intuitive eating makes you the expert of your body’s hunger signals. There are no strict guidelines associated with this way of eating, like meal frequency or composition of each meal. The transition from counting macros to intuitive eating can be challenging. Moving directly to intuitive eating without implementing the below steps could be a recipe for disaster leading to loss of your hard earned progress. Following are five ways to make the transition.
1. Obtain a “handy” portion guide Using your hand to determine portions is helpful as you move away from your food scale. You can’t leave home without it, literally! The size of one
serving of protein is approximately the size of your palm, a serving of carbohydrate is roughly the size of your closed fist, and one serving of dietary fat (peanut butter, anyone?) is the size of your
3. Stick with your meal schedule for the first two to three weeks The No. 1 mistake of transitioning away from flexible dieting is scrapping a meal schedule altogether during the first week. Abandoning a meal schedule leads to a drastic reduction of meals if you are someone with a low appetite or cause you to frequently eat between meals, which can also drastically change a person’s caloric intake. If you ate four times per day while counting macros (my favorite meal frequency), continue with four meals per day. As you become more comfortable, feel free to change the frequency and size of your meals bsaed on hunger.
thumb. 2. Start eyeballing portions of lowcalorie items first It’s best to start with eyeballing vegetables, then protein items, then carbohydrates. An extra 2 ounces of
4. Focus on balanced meals When you feel hungry, create a plate with a serving of each macronutrient. If you do have an unbalanced meal, make up for the difference
at your next meal. For example, if you chose a double serving of carbs at lunch and skipped on the dietary fat, choose a low-carb meal with added dietary fat for dinner. An example would be having a double serving of angel hair pasta with marinara for lunch and balancing your intake at dinner with a meal consisting of a green salad with salmon and balsamic dressing. 5. Eat slowly to be more cognizant of cues Put your fork down between bites. Choose to eat sitting down instead of standing up and try not to multitask while eating to focus on your meal. Your stomach will communicate with your brain to signal you are full but this is not instantaneous. If you eat quickly, you will still feel hungry after your meal and that could lead you to believe you need to increase your portion sizes. Try eating slowly before making changes to your meal sizes. Check how you are doing after two weeks of intuitive eating by weighing your eyeballed portion amounts for accuracy. Keep a habit journal to see how well you are at eating slowly and keeping healthy foods on hand.

10 Foods for your Heart According to the CDC, about 610,000 people die of heart disease in the U.S. ever year – that means that heart disease is responsible for one in every four deaths. Prevention, especially in the form of nutrition, is key. Dr. Wolfson (www.thedrswolfson. com), board-certified cardiologist and a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, is sharing the top 10 foods to keep your arteries clean and reverse coronary artery disease.

1. Beef Saturated fat does not increase the risk of heart disease, according to an analysis of over 350,000 people in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Organ cuts, such as liver and kidney, are packed with beneficial nutrients like vitamins A and D. Cows are meant to eat grass, not corn, soy and wheat. 2. Kale Kale is a great source of fiber, vitamin K, vitamin C and promotes healthy arteries as a powerful antioxidant. It also contains sulforaphane, which can lower cancer risk. 3. Beets Beets help normalize blood pressure because they contain nitrates. They also reduce homocysteine, an amino acid linked to heart disease and dementia risk.

4. Chlorella This blue-green algae is one of nature’s superfoods. Chlorella cuts the risk of heart disease by reducing oxidative damage of tissues. 5. Wild salmon Wild salmon contains two crucial omega-3’s are EPA and DHA, which lower the risk of heart disease, improve heart rhythm, and also help with depression, dementia and arthritis. 6. Avocado Avocado is a great source of vitamin C, fiber, magnesium and potassium. These elements are crucial to good health. Vitamin C is an antioxidant which blocks free radicals damage. 7. Almonds Multiple studies have shown eating nuts and seeds are heart healthy. In fact, those who eat the most of these foods have the

lowest risk of a heart attack or stroke due to their high vitamin E content. 8. Broccoli Broccoli is rich with phytonutrients and antioxidants along with other vitamins. Phytonutrients are not as essential to the body as most vitamins but are a great way to prevent disease and keep the body working properly. 9. Eggs Eggs contain cholesterol but do not cause heart attacks. In fact, those who eat the most amount of eggs enjoy the best health. Eggs raise HDL to fight heart disease. 10. Olive oil Olive oil contains high levels of heart-healthy monounsaturated fats. Olive oil also has endless antiinflammatory and antihypertensive effects.
¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper 2 tablespoons grated parmesan or cotija cheese, split in half 1 tablespoon chopped cilantro To Begin: Mix mayo, lemon, garlic, cayenne and 1 tablespoon of cheese in a small bowl. Place corn on a shallow plate and slather paste generously over entire ear surface. Reserve enough cheese and all of cilantro for the topping. To Grill: Make sure that grill rack is clean and coals are hot but flame has tempered. Place corn on grill and leave in place until the initial side is nice and well marked before turning. Continue rolling the surface of all sides of corn until uniformly charred and browned on all sides. Carefully remove corn from grill and generously sprinkle with grated cheese and freshly chopped cilantro.

crazy 8s Cats are the most popular pets in America. There are more cats owned in the U.S. (about 85 million) versus dogs (78 million). So, what makes these feline friends so admired? Aside from their fluffy cuteness and quirky behavior, they’re also independent, smart and extremely interesting. For instance, did you know that a cat’s brain is biologically similar to a human brain? Both humans and cats have regions in their brains that are responsible for emotion. Read on for more fun trivia about these furballs.
1. Have you heard? Cats can rotate their ears almost 180 degrees. Their ears consist of 32 muscles, but they regularly use only 12 of them. 2. Purfect Pawliticians. In Talkeetna, Alaska, a small town of about 900, a cat named Stubbs was elected mayor in a write-in campaign in 1998 and served as the honorary mayor of the Alaska town until passing away last year. 3. You’ve got to be kitten me! Although it’s a common belief that cats love milk, did you know that many cats are lactose intolerant?

4. Built-in sensors. Cats typically have 24 whiskers, and they are generally the same width as their bodies. They use their whiskers to feel around and they can help a cat determine if he or
she can fit in a small space. 5. Get to grooming. Adult cats can spend approximately half of their hours awake grooming themselves and other cats. They lick to clean and shine their coats, bond with other cats, relax, and cool down. 6. Leaving impressions. Just like the fingerprint of a human, a cat’s nose pad is ridged with a unique pattern that only they can be identified with. 7. Historical presence. The Egyptian Mau is probably the oldest breed of cat. In fact, the breed is so ancient that its name is the Egyptian word for cat. 8. Luck be a kitty. Black cats are often a symbol of bad luck in the United States, but they are believed to be good luck in the United Kingdom and Australia.

The Beauty Within
Dr. Sumer Daiza, MD FADS, of Plastic Surgery of Scottsdale
PLASTIC SURGERY IS a highly personal decision for every individual and Dr. Sumer Daiza makes that medical journey right along with her patients. By offering the safest and highest level of focused care, she welcomes each patient into a warm and compassionate environment where they are treated like family. Dr. Daiza has lived in Scottsdale since she was a baby. From the age of three, she knew she wanted to be a physician because of the respect she had for her own childhood doctor. She attended Xavier College Preparatory and Arizona State University before earning her medical degree from the University of Arizona College of Medicine. She was also elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, a distinction awarded to only the top 10 percent of the medical school graduating class. She completed a 5-year general surgery residency program at the Phoenix Integrated Surgical Residency and her plastic surgery training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. “It wasn’t until my general surgery training that I was exposed to the plastic surgery specialty and I knew immediately that this was what I wanted to do,” Dr. Daiza says. After her plastic surgery training, Dr. Daiza went on to complete a one-year cosmetic surgery fellowship with Charlotte Plastic Surgery where she trained alongside some of the leading plastic surgeons in the country. Her training focused on cosmetic surgery of the breast, body and face, which are now her specialty. Now in her own practice, Dr. Daiza offers highly personalized cosmetic procedures including facelifts, breast augmentations, lifts and reductions, liposuction, tummy tucks, body contouring, mommy makeovers, Botox and fillers. “I do all the injectables myself and I do not use ancillary staff to do them,” she says. Mommy makeovers are a very popular procedure, including the Genevieve by Viveve vaginal rejuvenation. “It fits in well with my patient population and benefits moms who have had babies and those that have urinary incontinence,” Dr. Daiza says. She adds, “My office is like a concierge practice. I see every
patient from the very beginning until the very end.” An initial consultation takes about an hour where she will discuss a patient’s desired outcome, helps them select the procedure that is right for them, an exam is completed, and patients look at before and after photos of what they can expect. “We are very much a no-pressure office,” she explains. Dr. Daiza personally sees each patient for every appointment, including all pre-op and post-up visits. Even beyond the surgical procedure, she stays in contact with her patients. “What I do is very personal as it is, and patients are coming in to feel better about themselves, so it becomes a personal relationship.” Her patients stay with her throughout the years and often refer family members and friends. Remarkably, every patient gets Dr. Daiza’s personal cell number so that they have the peace of mind knowing their doctor is only a phone call away. The Skin You’re In
Anne Walter, MD of Dermatology & Skin Surgery Specialists
THE SKIN IS the largest and most visible organ of the human body. It needs attention and expert care throughout a lifetime. Whether getting medical, surgical or cosmetic dermatological care, Dr. Anne Walter utilizes state-of-the-art techniques to develop customized treatments plan for each patient. Hailing from California, Dr. Walter attended Harvard, completing her bachelor’s degree and graduating cum laude before earning her Doctor of Medicine at University of Southern California. “I had originally thought I wanted to be a plastic surgeon until I entered medical school. However, most procedures in plastic surgery require patients to be placed under general anesthesia, which limits physician-patient interaction,” Dr. Walter explains. “In medical school, I gained more exposure to dermatology and fell in love with it. I really enjoy interacting and developing relationships with my patients. Furthermore, I liked that there was a medical component, working with both cancer and chronic medical conditions, as well as a cosmetic side. It was the perfect combination.” She completed an internal medicine internship at UCLA’s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center before completing her dermatology residency at Chicago’s Northwestern University, serving as chief resident during her final year. She then completed a yearlong Mohs Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology fellowship. “My training brought me to the East Coast, West Coast and Midwest! It’s nice because I feel like I have something in common with almost every patient,” Dr. Walter explains. Dr. Walter and her husband opened Dermatology & Skin Surgery Specialists in Scottsdale in 2015. In contrast to the corporatization of dermatology, Dr. Walter prides herself on providing patient centered care in an intimate practice environment. Dr. Walter’s expertise in the field is exceptional. She is a fellow of the American College of Mohs Surgery and American Academy of Dermatology. Dr. Walter recognizes that practicing dermatology in Arizona comes with unique challenges. “We have intense sun exposure which can lead to skin cancer and premature aging. We can’t assume that sunscreen alone is enough. When possible, I recommend physically protecting the skin with hats, swim shirts and sun protective clothing, in addition to sunscreen. People should also be proactive and optimize their skin care regimens. The skin benefits from hydration, antioxidants, retinoids, and growth factors.”
The doctor suggests that people in their early 20s have their skin checked to get a baseline evaluation of moles and overall skin health to determine skin cancer risk. Those in their 30s and 40s and beyond should be evaluated more frequently. Obviously, any concerning lesions should be brought to the attention of a dermatologist no matter the patient’s age. Dr. Walter also recommends being proactive about antiaging. Small treatments in your early years can help maintain a natural youthful look during your golden years. “Scottsdale’s cosmetic market is booming,” Dr. Walter explains. “Unfortunately, amid the many qualified providers, there are many unsupervised injectors that do not understand the risks of the procedures. I prefer restricting these services to physicians.” Dermatology & Skin Surgery Specialists excels at providing exceptional dermatology expertise in a properly supervised practice. Alternative Medicine
Dr. Rebecca Miller, NMD, of Holistic Urgent Care and Primary Care OWNER AND PHYSICIAN at Holistic Urgent Care, Dr. Rebecca Miller is at the helm of a comprehensive alternative medicine practice that incorporates primary care and urgent care. It is the only holistic urgent care facility in the Valley and can treat a variety of illnesses and minor injuries. Dr. Miller is a skilled physician who earned her Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine from Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine. She is proficient in family medicine, including pediatric and adult care. Her skill areas include nutrition, IV therapy, ozone therapy, acupuncture, injection therapy, herbal and botanical medicine, environmental medicine, detoxification, homeopathy, and functional medicine. Ever since she was young, Dr. Miller knew she wanted to be a doctor. She began her medical education at the University of Dayton where she received her B.S. and B.A. in biology and psychology. Her initial goal was to become a surgeon. After doing a fair amount of shadowing of doctors in operating rooms and trauma centers, she had a realization. “In order to do a lot of that kind of work you have to be a bit callous and disconnected from your patients,” Miller explains. After much consideration of various specialties, Dr. Miller realized the best opportunity to connect with patients and play a meaningful role in their lives was in the realm of primary care. She also recognized that the role of a primary care provider is primarily in the realm of prevention, in promoting wellness, not just addressing illness after it occurs. This led her to pursue a career in Naturopathic Medicine. Dr. Miller has been in practice for nearly a decade and in 2017, she founded Holistic Urgent Care and Primary Care, giving her a caring way to provide the fullest scope of holistic care. “Most traditional urgent cares don’t offer anything in the way of treatment other than minor wound care and writing prescriptions,” she says. “We do much more.” At Holistic Urgent Care and Primary Care there are four holistic physicians available seven-days a week. “We can handle anything that a traditional urgent care can,” Dr. Miller says. “That would be anything non-life threatening and non-surgical.” Intermediate wound care, abrasions, lacerations, stomach aches, burns, rashes, sinus infections and flu can all be treated holistically. While natural treatment options are preferred, whenever necessary the doctors at Holistic Urgent Care can and will write prescriptions, order diagnostic testing, or refer to other specialists. Dr. Miller says. “Sometimes I’m begging my patients to use traditional
methods because sometimes people are too extreme on wanting to do everything naturally. But there are times where there is something very serious going on and we have to use traditional methods and we can do that.” In the primary care setting at the practice, there is an emphasis on prevention and curtailing serious illness through diet, exercise and natural approaches. “We have a lot of tools here that are used in the realm of wellness, and a lot of people come in who aren’t necessarily seriously ill, they just don’t feel well and there are a lot of things we can do to help.” Dr. Miller explains. “Holistic medicine is all about prevention, making the body stronger and avoiding the need for prescriptions and higher intervention,” Dr. Miller finishes. At Holistic Urgent Care and Primary Care, patients can receive both primary and urgent care and walk-ins are always welcome. Feel Better. Function Better. Look Better. Dr. Russell Bartels, Women’s Health & Vitality Hormones for Men Expert
DR. RUSSELL BARTELS is a board-certified gynecologist, but that does not define him. Over 16 years in practice he has responded to his patients needs and requests. For example, his revitalized female hormone patients asked him to treat the men in their lives, so he started a men’s health clinic to get men optimized too. Ten years ago, women began inquiring about vaginal rejuvenation, so Dr. Bartels went to Beverly Hills, received additional expertise on performing labiaplasty and vaginal tightening becoming the first to offer these services in Scottsdale. Subsequently, he added a wellness and weight loss program. He recognizes that no two patients are alike and the most effective solution is achieved through a personalized expert approach utilizing multiple modalities. After phasing out of delivering babies a few years ago, he still offers routine office gynecological services with a focus on non-surgical treatments for bladder leaking and vaginal looseness, health and wellness through hormone/thyroid optimization, sexual health and weight loss. Dr. Bartels offers many options for bioidentical hormones including creams, pills, injections, patches, and the sought-after pellets. He has been providing pellet therapy for over 10 years and suggests patients interested in this form of hormone optimization see an experienced provider as there are many pellet clinics popping up with little experience. For the men, he offers similar hormone/thyroid optimization and weight loss options, but also has several treatments for erectile dysfunction including the P Shot (PRP), Tri Mix injections, and the newest regenerative treatment called Gainswave. As the foremost authority on vaginal and bladder rejuvenation in Scottsdale, Dr. Bartels prides himself on the fact that his office is the only one in Arizona that has all the technological options for women seeking non-surgical vaginal and bladder rejuvenation- Viveve (Radiofrequency), Femilift (CO2 laser), and the O Shot (PRP). He points out that many other offices and Medspas only have one of these treatment options, and therefore that’s the treatment the patient will receive even if it’s not the best option, as each device targets slightly different issues. “If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. We have the full tool box to address our patients’ problems.” “It’s great that I can see couples and get them on the same page hormonally and functionally,” Dr. Bartels says. “We do weight
loss programs, too. It’s really about health optimization.” He is a leading expert in bioidentical hormone replacement therapy and has provided countless patients a renewed sense of self and better quality of life through his individualized approach. He is also a much sought-after speaker on the subject of bioidentical hormones and non-surgical vaginal/bladder rejuvenation. Additionally, the practice offers routine gynecological services, making it a comprehensive one-stop practice for all gynecological needs. On the aesthetics side, the practice offers Cool Sculpting, laser treatments, Botox, dermal fillers, PRP hair restoration and non-surgical facial rejuvenation. “I’m passionate about listening to a patient’s concerns and evaluating what they’ve been suffering with that no one else seems to be able to fix,” says Dr. Bartels. “Diagnosing problems when others can’t and offering solutions where others haven’t in order to help patients live better lives is why I became a doctor in the first place.” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT DR. Comprehensive Addiction Recovery Options Dr. Sarah Wicklund, MD FAPA of Fountain Hills Recovery BOARD-CERTIFIED PSYCHIATRIST and medical director of Fountain Hills Recovery, Dr. Sarah Wicklund provides comprehensive inpatient treatment. She also has a specialty of treating PTSD in veterans and first responders, treatment-resistant depression and patients with a dual diagnosis. Fountain Hills Recovery specializes in providing caring service for niche patient populations including executives, veterans, first responders, LGBT, youth, celebrities, artists, musicians and those with high stress careers. Dr. Wicklund received her B.S. in microbiology and her M.S. in Food Chemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. She went on to the University of Illinois College of Medicine for medical school where she graduated in 2008. In 2012, she completed residency training in psychiatry at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, WI. During her time at MCW, she served as Chief Resident for the Milwaukee VA and gained an affinity for treating veterans. “I have several family members who are veterans and so is my husband,” Dr. Wicklund explains. “My rotation at the VA was not my only psychiatry rotation, but an elective rotation I chose to do during my fourth year that solidified my interest in psychiatry. I love to give back and it’s a way I felt I could give back to my country, too.” She relocated to Scottsdale after her residency in 2012 and joined the medical staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital in the inpatient setting at Valley Hospital. In 2013, she joined the Phoenix VA where she is still on staff, working with patients in inpatient and outpatient settings. Dr. Wicklund was excited to take on the position of medical director for Fountain Hills Recovery in June 2018 because of the focus on treating veterans and first responders. Because she is still working four days a week at the VA, her position at Fountain Hills Recovery allows for better continuity of care for patients suffering from substance abuse. There are two separate residential homes – one for men and one for women. She can follow her patients’ treatment from the
more intense residential substance abuse setting to the outpatient setting of her own private outpatient practice, Mindfully Integrated Health, and vice versa. She is proud to work with patients in a peaceful and respectful environment that offers a comprehensive approach to recovery. “I really like that Fountain Hills Recovery is doing recovery for the right reasons,” Dr. Wicklund says. “They are looking to help people. Substance abuse is so rampant in this country, particularly with opiate addiction. The owners, Natalie and John Salem really seem like they’re doing this to help others, especially first responders and veterans and that’s my soft spot.” There are a wide variety of patients at Fountain Hills recovery. “There are some veterans and first responders,” says Dr. Wicklund. “But, that’s not everyone, and it’s nice to see an array of people that come from across the country.” She is excited about the new component of working with patients from other areas of the country, as since her relocation to Arizona, she had exclusively been treating people from Arizona. Dr. Wicklund explains, “This is not the typical recovery program. There is staff here that are also in recovery. They understand from personal experience. They are very good at picking up when someone is leaving something out or just listening to get to the underlying issues of alcoholism or drug use.” “I’m really comfortable with dual diagnosis,” she says. “Having worked at the VA, there is a significant amount of dual diagnosis, whether that’s alcohol abuse, opiates or meth and mental illness. I’ve seen a lot of it and treated a lot of it.” Dr. Wicklund’s passion continues to be witnessing her patients’ success. “I love to see folks get better. I love to hear them say they’re feeling better and that they’re able to work with the program and be optimistic that it will work for them,” she finishes. Most major health insurance plans accepted and discounted selfpay rates available for those without insurance. Leading Edge Cosmetic Dentistry
Dr. Jeffrey D. Clark, DDS FAGD of Scottsdale Dental Excellence AT SCOTTSDALE DENTAL EXCELLENCE, Dr. Jeffrey D. Clark and his staff provide comfortable, individualized and comprehensive quality dental care in a relaxing spa-like environment. Offering restorative and focused cosmetic dentistry, implants, Invisalign and same day CEREC restorations, patients have the widest variety of dental services available in a state-of-the-art practice. Originally from California, Dr. Clark is a second-generation dentist who grew up assisting in his father’s dental practice. He dual majored in business finance and pre-med in college and graduated from Loma Linda University School of Dentistry. He initially thought he would be interested in performing root canals like his father, but he came to love cosmetic dentistry. He moved to Arizona in 1997 and opened his practice in Scottsdale. Some of Dr. Clark’s general cosmetic dental practice incorporates services including complete smile makeovers, teeth whitening using GLO, same day crowns, Invisalign, dental implants and comprehensive strategies to treat sleep apnea. “Nearly everything we do has a cosmetic aesthetic component,” Dr. Clark explains. “It is my goal to enhance and improve a smile.” Dr. Clark’s approach is comprehensive. Patients are initially screened for soft tissue issues like periodontal disease, oral cancer and a break down on tooth decay. Bite and occlusion are also evaluated. “Instead of looking at one or two teeth, we evaluate a patient’s overall health and medical history,” he says. Sleep apnea is one vitally important area that Dr. Clark treats. “Utilizing Cone Beam 3-D X-ray technology that gives a 3-D rendering of all the hard tissues and neck region, we look at the airway and visually see if there are any obstructions that could be occurring in the back of the throat that might be causing obstructive sleep apnea,” he says. Sleep apnea can have severe effects on someone’s health, including cardiovascular disease. Traditionally, a CPAP mask has been one tool in effectively treating sleep apnea. “We can now design oral appliances that have the same benefit,” Dr. Clark explains. “The appliance helps keep the lower jaw in a more forward position preventing the back of the tongue and soft tissue in the back of the throat from collapsing.” The appliance allows the airway to stay open and provide oxygen while someone sleeps. Dr. Clark arranges a sleep test to be done conveniently in
a patient’s home. The information collected from the sleep study is then submitted to a certified sleep physician who can make an Obstructive Sleep Apnea diagnosis. Once a diagnosis is received, the patient is fitted with the appliance. He works with the patients medical insurance to help cover of the cost. After 6 months of wearing the device, the doctor will arrange for another in home sleep study to ensure effectiveness. Dr. Clark was diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea, thoroughly educated himself and now educates his patients. “I wanted to take that information and apply it to my patients,” he says. “If I can save a life by possibly helping a patient discover this problem, it’s worth it.” “Looking back over my almost 25-year career, I don’t think I could have picked a better career,” Dr. Clark says. “I really love what I do.” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT SCOTTSDALE DENTAL EXCELLENCE, CALL 480.585.1853 OR VISIT WWW.SCOTTSDALEDENTALEXCELLENCE.COM.

Stem Cell Treatment for Diabetic Neuropathy Dr. Richard Jacoby, DPM of Extremity Health Center
THE DOCTORS AND staff at Extremity Health Centers offer a combined 40+ years of experience in podiatric medicine to residents who live in and around the Phoenix and Scottsdale area. Under the medical direction of podiatrist Richard P. Jacoby, DPM, the practice provides diagnosis and treatment for stubborn, chronic foot and ankle pain and comprehensive and successful treatment of diabetic neuropathy. After graduating from college, Dr. Jacoby attended Villanova University before receiving his doctorate of podiatric medicine at the Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine. He has participated in and taught thousands of hours of Continuing Medical Education over the past few decades. Additionally, he is a past president of the Arizona Podiatry Association and the Association of Extremity Nerve Surgeons and co-authored the book “Sugar Crush: How to Reduce Inflammation, Reverse Nerve Damage, and Reclaim Good Health,” correlating a relationship between sugar and inflammation. Extremity Health Center offers a variety of on-site extremity diagnosis and medical services, including surgery that are available for a wide range of issues, including foot and heel pain, bunions, ankle fractures and sprains, varicose veins, foot and ankle arthritis, diabetic foot, plantar fasciitis, toenail fungus and peripheral neuropathy and neuroma. Dr. Jacoby’s specialty is working with diabetic patients and he has a proven formula to resolve diabetic neuropathy. “What I’ve found is that the progression of most neuropathies is aggressive, insidious and invasive throughout the body.” “Stem cells from umbilical cord blood are the best product out there today, especially for neuropathy,” says Dr. Jacoby of the most effect treatment he uses. “ Stem cells are miraculous in that they actively seek out inflammatory tissues and repair and restore tissue, tendon, tissue, bone, nerve or muscle. Stem cells also work in the repair of foot and ankle fractures and Achilles tendonitis. “Stem cells are the biggest paradigm shift in medicine since the germ theory and it’s absolutely true,” Dr. Jacoby explains of stem cell use in diabetic neuropathy. “Patients will get off their medicine, and in most cases will avoid surgery.” Dr. Jacoby uses the Dellon procedure for decompressing
peripheral neuropathy. He has utilized the surgical procedure successfully on thousands of patients and none of them have needed a subsequent amputation. He says, “Dr. Dellon perfected the Dellon technique and did the research back in the 80s. I adopted his technique and trained with him 20 years ago.” There have been 100,000 amputations annually due to diabetic neuropathy since the implementation of the Dellon procedure and Dr. Jacoby says that adds up to two million avoidable amputations. “It’s a national disgrace,” he says. It is his belief that the FDA pushes medications that don’t work, which in turn, create situations where amputations are done. The Dellon procedure utilizing stem cells could save thousands of people from avoidable amputations. “Stem cells are the fountain of youth and I’ve used them myself for a severe herniated disc,” finishes Dr. Jacoby. “I was back playing tennis in three days and haven’t needed another injection since.” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT EXTREMITY HEALTH CENTER, CALL 480.994.5977 IN SCOTTSDALE OR PEORIA, OR VISIT WWW.EXTREMITYHEALTHCENTERS.COM.

Psychology for Today’s World Gila Lesky MSW LCSW
LICENSED CLINICAL PSYCHOTHERAPIST, Gila Lesky has proudly offered her therapy services to a wide range of clients for more than 25 years. The issues she addresses with her patients include the fullest scope of psychological and relationship challenges. Lesky graduated from the University of Calgary with a master’s degree in Social Welfare and is a Board Certified Diplomate through the American Board of Examiners. Her passion is in helping people move towards a fulfilling life by overcoming specific challenges either with others or within themselves. She creates meaningful dialogue and provides useful skills that patients can use to move forward in their lives. Lesky became interested in psychology as a youngster. “I had a very intense curiosity and an intuitive desire to learn more about people and the way they think, feel and behave.” Some of the issues that Lesky works on with patients include anxiety and depression, chronic illness, life transitions, family conflict, marital and premarital challenges, women’s issues, trauma, parenting adolescents and intergenerational conflict resolution. She sees individuals, couples and families in her practice. Early in her career, Lesky established new social service programs in acute care hospitals. Her intention was to humanize what she considered a cold and clinical system. “I ultimately realized there were two different populations that were struggling – both patients and physicians,” Lesky explains. As part of her hospital role, she helped patients communicate more freely, and helped support those in the medical profession thrive in their professional and personal lives. In clinical practice, she focuses on conflict resolution. She sees many patients working through marital and relationship challenges. “The goal is not to surrender to the dysfunctional process that is destroying the relationship, but to uncover earlier strengths in the relationship, and build upon them with new insights and tools. “Sometimes it’s almost a linguistic nuance. People seem to be speaking different languages to each other.” She designs a program of cognitive and emotional fitness that benefits each couple’s needs. Just like physical fitness, a relationship needs exercise to stay healthy. Lesky’s practice differs from others in that she works with people who are seeking to heal their relationships and are not divorce oriented. She specializes in clearing a path leading to new ways of thinking and behaving.
She also feels strongly about utilizing applied neuroscience.” This is a burgeoning field and extremely helpful in empowering patients to learn concepts that can be life changing.” By utilizing strategies that incorporate concepts from brain science, Lesky is able to help patients develop more self-awareness and control. Understanding how thoughts, feelings and behaviors manifest in everyday life is greatly empowering, allowing for more appropriate reactions during life’s challenges. “My longitudinal experience includes living and working in multi-cultural environments” Lesky finishes. “I have an eclectic, optimistic and to some degree existential or spiritually driven kind of practice. I have seen amazing things happen in the transformation of relationships and personal growth.” Lesky enjoys speaking to community and professional groups on a variety of related topics. World Class Neurosurgery and Spinal Surgery
Dr. Mohamed Abdulhamid, MD of Sono Spine Arizona and Royal Spine Surgery THE DECISION TO undergo neurosurgery or spinal surgery is not one to be made lightly. Dr. Mohamed Abdulhamid is the president of Sono Spine Arizona, currently one of only two campuses in the country that provide ultrasonic fusion-avoidance surgeries, and is also the founding director and CEO of Royal Spine Surgery. His focus is on minimally invasive, non-fusion same-day outpatient spine procedures that allow faster healing and recovery and return to work and activities. From the time he was in third grade, Dr. Abdulhamid realized he had an interest in neurosurgery. “It became of dream of mine,” he says. “I enjoyed the science behind it and the surgical aspect.” By his first year of medical school, his focus on getting into neurosurgery was set. Dr. Abdulhamid, is a graduate of the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and he completed his residency training in neurosurgery at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY. He then completed his fellowship training in minimally invasive and complex spine surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in Miami, FL. Some of the various issues that Dr. Abdulhamid treats include but are not limited to sciatica, disc bulge or herniation, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, radiculopathy, pinched nerve and spinal cord compression. New technologies utilized to be able to treat patients include cervical disc replacement, motion-preservation devices, microscopic and ultrasonic spine procedures. Patients who visit Dr. Abdulhamid are not necessarily going to need surgery as there are most often non-surgical treatments available. He’s been practicing in the Valley since 2013 and opened Royal Spine Surgery in 2016. “Most patients are comfortable coming to see us when they know that only one in five patients actually has to have surgery. That one person who does have surgery, ninety five percent of the time has a same day surgery that is not spinal fusion,” says Dr. Abdulhamid. For those who need advanced minimally invasive spinal procedures, fusion-avoidance surgeries are done by Dr. Abdulhamid at
Royal Spine Surgery, or with the ultrasonic SonoSculpt® at Sono Spine Arizona. “My approach to spinal care is comprehensive,” he explains. “I evaluate the patient and the problems they have as a whole, and recommend treatment based on what I see.” Dr. Abdulhamid believes in a true comprehensive multidisciplinary approach to spine care involving input from colleagues in physical therapy, chiropractic therapy and pain management interventions to ensure that surgery is the patient’s last resort to take care of their neck or lower back pain. “Patients need not to fear about consulting with a spine surgeon, since in most cases, a patient’s condition might just need conservative non-surgical management, finishes Dr. Abdulhamid. “If surgery is needed, they most likely would be a candidate for one of the minimally invasive, non-fusion, same-day-outpatient spine procedures.” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT ROYAL SPINE SURGERY, CALL 480.372.3555 OR VISIT WWW.DRABDULHAMID.COM OR WWW.SONOSPINESURGERY.COM.

“Anything where there’s not another guy trying to take my head off is easy for me!”
aking a leap from business into the UFC world may seem like an unlikely move, but for Knoxville, Tennessee native, Scott “Hot Sauce” Holtzman, it was one that has been nothing but rewarding. As he has moved up through the ranks of UFC, the dynamic fighter has been living in Knoxville and Scottsdale, training and getting ready for a huge fight coming up later this year. Holtzman holds an associate’s degree and a bachelor’s degree in sociology with a concentration in criminal justice and a minor in business administration. In college, he played college hockey, eventually turning pro and playing for the Knoxville Ice Bears in the 2008-2009 season. “After college, a friend talked me into joining a low-level pro hockey league,” Holtzman explains. “I made it through the training camp and the first bit of the season, but I got cut and they wanted to send me to another team.” He decided that he didn’t want to pursue it further. He had planned on a career in the corporate world, but the universe had something else in store for Holtzman.

A Fighting Chance
Holtzman’s journey to the UFC began when he started fighting in Knoxville, expanding out his territory to include matches throughout Tennessee, then the Southeast. He soon joined a minor league organization that allowed him to fight athletes from around the country. “You build up a reputation and I had been shown on a channel called AXS TV in my minor league career,” Holtzman says. “I had an undefeated record, so I ended up getting a call to sign with the UFC four or five years ago. There’s no clear-cut path in the UFC. You just build up a really good record, try not to lose matches and hope that you are what they are looking for.” Holtzman frequently is asked how he got his nickname of “Hot Sauce,” a moniker he’s had since his days in the amateur league. “In fighting, people like to give you weird nicknames like ‘Killer,’ or ‘Pit Bull,” and that’s not really me,” he explains. “I’m an athlete and a competitor. I said I wasn’t going to use a nickname and I was just going to be myself.” A coworker of Holtzman’s at a former office job noticed that he used to put hot sauce on everything he ate and the nickname “Hot Sauce” was born. When that coworker started working out at the same gym as Holtzman, the spicy moniker followed the fighter and has stuck ever since. “‘Hot Sauce’ has been great for branding and that’s been fun,” he laughs. Holtzman is trained in Brazilian jiujitsu, boxing, kickboxing and wrestling, all of which are used when fighting in the UFC. “All of these are the fundamental bases of mixed martial arts (MMA) and it’s a bunch of sports all rolled up into one,” he explains. It was training that brought him to Arizona. “There came a time in my career where I had to seek out some higher-level training,” Holtzman says. “I had met Jamie Varner who was from the Tempe area and he used to fight on one of the same cards I did in Tennessee. He invited me out here to train with him.” After spending a week training with Varner and getting acquainted with the Valley, Holtzman began coming back regularly. The fighter now splits his time between Knoxville and Scottsdale.
Training for Battle
Holtzman’s ongoing training routine is intense. He trains six days straight and then takes one day off to relax. Some days will include strength and conditioning followed by Brazilian jiujitsu for an hour. Daily team practices are also incorporated and include kickboxing drills and hitting hand pads and kick bags. Other days will incorporate wresting practice, but maybe no cardio training as the workouts will vary slightly. Two or three days a week he is also in Scottsdale working on mobility training at Premier Fitness Systems. Trainer
Brandon Harris at Premier Fitness Systems has served as a valued mentor to Holtzman as has John Crouch, his coach at the MMA Lab in Phoenix. “The mobility training is always my favorite and it always helps my body feel better – like a recovery session,” he explains. Nutrition is also extremely important in the world of UFC fighting and there is not much wiggle room for diet cheats. “I have to be absolutely perfect with my nutrition,” the athlete says. “In the six to eight weeks leading up to a fight, we have to lose a lot of weight and maintain a certain weight and step on the scale at a certain weight in order to compete. I have to keep it super clean with minimal sugars and as much organic food as possible.” He will consume 3,000 to 4,000 calories a day just to maintain the intense level of daily multiple training sessions. Daily, his diet is high in healthy fat, high-complex carbohydrates and high in protein. Right now, Holtzman is preparing for his next fight, which will take place October 6th in Las Vegas, Nevada at UFC 229 against Alan Patrick from Sao Paolo, Brazil. Patrick is 15-1 and Holtzman is looking forward to the challenge. “Hopefully with that win, I’ll move up to the top 20 rank in the world,” he says. “Right now, I’m ranked number 40 in the world.” Holtzman will be training with Crouch and Harris intensively in the coming weeks. “Those two are a huge part of what I do and the level that I’ve achieved so far,” he says.
Future Plans
Currently, Holtzman stays in Scottsdale with a friend, and occasionally in a home owned by the MMA Lab. During his time staying in the Valley, he’s grown to love some of the local businesses and he counts Boss Coffee among his favorite places to frequent. Though he doesn’t get out to eat much since he’s always in training camp when in Scottsdale, when he does, he enjoys ProteinHouse, Whole Foods, Pita Jungle and The Green House. After his UFC career ends in a few years, Holtzman sees himself becoming an entrepreneur. “I’m never working for someone else again,” he says with a laugh. “Being in the UFC, you are kind of running your own business. I’ve made some good connections, built up a good resume and I have some good ideas, but I’m not trying to take too much away from the ‘now.’” Holtzman’s wife, Kelsey Holtzman and their new baby boy, Hayes Holtzman currently live in Tennessee and the couple is weighing options on whether to stay there or move permanently to Arizona. “I’m loving being a dad and it’s a real treat,” Holtzman says. “I’ve always wanted kids, and this is way easier than fighting in an octagon. Anything where there’s not another guy trying to take my head off is easy for me!”

Designed to help those in the fitness and training industries level up, FITposium will continue to educate and inspire those involved in nearly every facet of fitness, including entrepreneurs that want to elevate their brand and learn how to market themselves.
BEHIND THE CAMERA Patrick is from a marketing development background and saw the industry he was in hit a downturn a decade ago when the economy took a nosedive. “I was watching a crazy plummet and I saw it from two sides,” Patrick explains. “In my photography, my clients were going out of business and couldn’t afford freelance photography services and in my full-time job where I was in an office of 130 people, all of a sudden we were down to 39 people.” When he saw the economy shifting, he decided to leave his marketing job and devote himself to his photography business. “I thought I could roll the dice with photography and try to niche myself, pursue something that was important to me stylistically, that was valuable to me and try one last time before putting the camera on the shelf,” Patrick recalls. He wanted continued to grow his experience and brand of fitness photography and creative portraiture through magazines. As he did that, his business flourished. “I know what works in a magazine and what sells a magazine,” says Patrick, who shoots almost 50 magazine covers for various publications annually. As he married a fitness industry need with his media expertise, he saw an opportunity. He routinely encounters fitness people that have the look, story, expertise and drive, but need assistance in taking it to the next level with their own business. Patrick had frequently worked with people and got them on local, national and international covers only to discover a few years later that the person’s business had folded. Patrick would ask what happened. “The answer was always, ‘I had no idea what to do,’” he says. “They had all the clout and equity, but no idea what to do after that.” Magazine coverage is fleeting and Patrick says taking advantage of the time frame is extremely important. “[A magazine is] on the shelf for 30 days, then it’s gone. If you didn’t capitalize on that when it was happening, you can’t reengineer it when it’s gone,” he explains. He saw that not everyone understands how to market themselves, connect with an audience and build revenue. And so, FITposium was born out of that realization.
FOCUSED ON FITNESS FITposium, a three-day event, assists those in fitness by showing them how to sidestep common pitfalls and how to market and brand themselves or their business for success. “One misconception is someone who thinks, ‘I just need to grow a social media following and then everything will fall into place,’ or ‘I just need to be on a magazine cover and then my phone will ring and people will be offering me money,” Patrick says. Having the proper perspective and goals coupled with business knowledge are the keys to success. “The goal shouldn’t be to get on a magazine cover or be in a feature. The goal is to leverage that cover or feature or all those
Instagram followers. It’s the understanding of what to do as that next step,” he explains. The reality is discovering all the steps that it takes to be successful and that it doesn’t happen overnight. During FITposium, attendees will participate in a multitrack educational seminar and enjoy in-depth workshops. Topics vary, fitting into marketing and business developing, personal development, entrepreneurship, personal training and fitness modeling categories. There is also a fitness and health industry expo, exclusive networking mixer and a casting call for attendees to book real published work as well as receive portfolio reviews face-to-face with top editors. More than 30 leading fitness entrepreneurs will be present to educate and speak to the audience including Chris and Heidi Powell, Angie Lee, Callie Bundy, Mindy Harley, Tommy Baker, Billy Polson and more. Editors from STRONG Fitness Magazine, Fitness Magazine, Scottsdale Health Magazine and Golf Magazine will also be at FITposium to present to the attendees, perform portfolio reviews and participate in casting calls for their publications. Attendees can earn continuing education units (CEUs) from the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA), the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) and the Athletics and Fitness Association of America (AFA). “This is the best educational lineup that we’ve ever put together,” Patrick says. “People are going to figure out how to make their first dollar, others will break that six-figure mark and multiple six-figure mark and maybe even get into seven figures.” FITposium is expected to sell out this year, with more than 300 attendees anticipated. A vendor expo will be available to the general public and will not require a ticket. FITposium will take place October 5-7 at We-Ko-Pa Resort and Conference Center, 10438 N. Fort McDowell Road, Scottsdale. To register to attend FITposium or for more information, visit www.fitposium.com.

Best Friends, Bad Sex? Three ways to turn up the heat
The star of the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding has filed for divorce from her husband. Her real-life romance with her husband inspired the movie. Now her real-life divorce is being credited not to fighting, but friendship. The once hot love fizzled into the friend zone. We call this the “Best Friends, Bad Sex Syndrome” and it’s rampant in our new age culture. It’s amazing when you finally meet the person who “gets” you better than anyone. To then feel the sex drain out of the picture is disheartening. Before you go looking for a new partner or file those divorce papers, take heart. There is hope. You can break out of “Best Friends, Bad Sex.” You simply need to understand one important concept in intimacy: sexual heat, dripping hot
desire, comes from the attraction of opposites – not sameness. What makes a best friend is sameness – a la “we are like two peas in a pod.” What makes a hot lover is differences – a la “who is that masked man?” A hot lover makes you slightly uncomfortable, a little off balance. You can’t tell what he’s thinking. When he leans in and breathes down your neck, he sends shivers up your spine and you wonder, “oh my, what is going to happen next?” It’s very hard to wonder what’s coming next with a best friend, since you already know. And this is why the sex can be so bad. But do not fret. You can turn a “Best Friends, Bad Sex” scenario around if you follow three simple steps.
Londin Angel Winters is a true thought leader in the conversation of embodied love and intimacy. As the author of Amazon best-selling book, “The Awakened Woman’s Guide To Everlasting Love,” acclaimed sacred intimacy coach, co-facilitator of the Yoga of Intimacy retreat and teacher of Sacred Snake Ceremony, Londin is bringing something refreshing and powerful to the world of relationship and divine feminine practice.

1. Stop training your man to behave like your bestie Over the course of a relationship, we tend to stop loving our man’s mysterious ways and instead insist that he “open up.” We coerce him to act more like our best girlfriend, to soften and share his emotions. We train him for sameness. No matter how long this has been going on, simply stop it. Appreciate the parts of him that like his motorcycle more than shopping. With your encouragement, he will feel free to settle back into his manly ways. 2. Reward your man for taking charge In tango dancing, if both partners are trying to lead, the dance goes nowhere. With one lead and one follow, it’s magic. It’s the same in dating. Relax the compulsion to lead and let your man step into that role. When he does, show him how much you love it. There is nothing sexier than having your man announce he is taking you out, and what time to be ready. Now you’ve got a lead and a follow. Prepare for sparks. 3. Turn to your girlfriends for shopping trips We have to learn to accept that what creates friendship isn’t what creates sexual heat. Great sex comes from a man who stares into our eyes and presses
us open more than we can open ourselves… not the kind of guy who goes on all-day shopping excursions with us. Which would you prefer, shopping or shivers? Go to your girlfriends for the shopping and chatting and let your man be the one who turns you on when he meets you with that silent, sexy presence. Appreciate the sexual heat that exists in difference and in mystery. Women often complain about wanting their guy to be more sensitive and emotionally available, but when their men show up in that way, they’re no longer attracted to each other. Because, let’s be honest, in the moments when your guy is talking to you about his feelings, do you really want to rip his clothes off? Begin to embrace, encourage and even inspire your man to reclaim his masculine parts. You might get less chat time, but see how it shifts things in the bedroom.

Spa 101
How to get the most out of your pampering experience Almost everyone loves a day at the spa. Tension-relieving massages, facial treatments, nail care, quiet time and ultimate relaxation are what people think they’re in store for when heading out for a spa day. Whether you regularly receive treatments or are a newbie to the practice, we’re talking taking advantage of your day at the spa.
Communication Communication is key at the spa! Spa therapists strive to provide the very best possible treatment or service to their guest in a way that is carefully crafted around each individual guest’s needs. In providing the tools the therapist needs to thoughtfully tailor each spa experience to the recipient’s unique wishes, it is of great significance guests feel empowered in the comfort-
ability of speaking up and communicating their respective preferences, need areas and anything that will help to inform the service they would like to receive. Perhaps the therapist’s applied pressure is too deep, or maybe it’s not deep enough. There may be a recent injury or chronic need-area of note – these are all helpful things for a guest to share with his or her therapist. The therapist’s primary goal is to ensure their guest leaves feeling incredible, and clear direction is not only warmly welcomed it’s greatly appreciated as it often makes the therapist’s job easier and his or her guest’s treatment most enjoyable. Take Advantage Arrive early and take full advantage of a service or treatment, turning a few hours into an entire day of rejuvenation and relaxation! Enjoy time soaking up the sun by the pool, utilize heath experiences or classes, indulge in fresh juices and light fare – there are quite a few complimentary perks that come along with booking a spa treatment or service, and there’s no reason not to explore and indulge in all of them. As an added bonus, wellness is a broad category and many of these complimentary offerings actually work together as one to increase the benefits of a therapy treatment. For example, soaking in the Jacuzzi
before a body massage allows muscles to naturally loosen up, and as a result, the therapist performing the massage will be able to better relieve any muscle soreness. Spa Longer Sometimes, in the middle or nearing the end of a treatment a guest decides he or she simply wants to extend their restorative journey and is need of a little more care. If that’s the case, a guest shouldn’t be afraid of asking their therapist if there’s opportunity to extend a treatment, or add additional elements for a wholesome spa experience. Additionally, it’s always appropriate for a guest to ask their therapist about recommendations on how to best extend spa care at home. Leave Refreshed Having an “exit plan” is often in a guest’s best interest, especially after a visit to the spa. It may sound silly, but avoiding making plans for the rest of the day following a spa therapy – especially plans that may potentially reverse the effects of the hard work a guest just put into feeling refreshed – can be one of the best things a guest can do posttreatment. Relaxing by the pool or taking it easy at home will allow skin to truly soak up the products applied in treatment, extending bliss and rejuvenation beyond the walls of the spa.

Wisdom for Weekend Warriors How to prevent and treat sports injuries
Falling behind on your fitness goals? Most of us know we should aim for a minimum of 150 minutes to 2 ½ hours of moderateintensity aerobic activity each week. But if you’re an occasional athlete intent on cramming a week’s worth of workouts into one weekend, you may find yourself at your doctor’s office. Sports medicine doctors treat many “weekend warriors” who overtrain with sprains, strains or fractures. Their injuries are often caused by strenuous or repetitive athletic activity after a long period of inactivity. Simply put, they overdo it. While it’s true that physical activity provides a multitude of health benefits, more isn’t always better, and an “all or nothing” attitude can be equally harmful.
Prevention: Balanced diet and activities Fortunately, preventing sports injuries can be as simple as taking a more balanced approach to fitness. Remember to warm up first and gradually increase your activity level. Instead of repeating the same routine, consider crosstraining. Include a variety of aerobic, musclestrengthening, bonestrengthening and stretching activities into your routine to avoid over-taxing the same muscles. Balance your diet, too. Good nutrition minimizes inflammation, promotes hydration and healthy circulation and helps keep bones strong to prevent fractures. Protective equipment is also essential. Get in the habit of wearing a helmet for biking, longboards or skating – any sport where your head could take the brunt of an impact. Don’t forget eye protection or a face shield, and wear pads to protect knees and elbows. Choose your footwear carefully, too. Well-fitting shoes or orthotic inserts not only protect your feet and ankles from overuse injuries, but they also encourage proper form, which prevents other injuries. Treatment: Selfcare for minor injuries What if it’s too late for prevention? For

minor injuries that don’t require a physician’s care, remember PRICE: Protect your injury to prevent further damage. Rest the affected area and restrict activity. Ice your injury, 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off; never apply ice directly to skin. Compression bandages can reduce inflammation and swelling – just don’t cut off circulation. Elevation helps reduce swelling; simply position the injured area above your heart. If these measures don’t appear to be helping, make an appointment with a sports medicine doctor who has many effective ways to get you back in the game – from simple taping, to immobilization with braces or splints, to innovative physical therapy techniques using electrical stimulation or ultrasound. Injections of cortisone, supplements or stem cells can be very effective, too, as well as NSAIDS or topical pain relievers to reduce pain and inflammation. Keep in mind that about 95 percent of overuse injuries improve without surgical intervention, but if surgery is needed, today’s techniques are more precise and less invasive than ever before. Most can even be done on an outpatient basis. Have fun, stay active, and take care out there.
