Take Action with National Hair Loss Be proactive about your hair’s health with preventive and restorative treatments
You’ve heard his voice stream through your car’s speakers during your morning commute talking about his hair transplant, personal laser device, & PRP. Johnjay Van Es, from The Morning Show with Johnjay and Rich, shares his story of hair loss and how he maintains a full head of hair thanks to National Hair Loss.
Stephen Madaus started losing his hair in his early 30s and sought out many treatments. Now, with over 8,000 Instagram followers and a career in hair loss, Stephen shares his experience and knowledge in hopes of helping men restore their hair and confidence.
Q: Why did you seek out hair treatment? Johnjay: I was at a clothing store and I saw Al Mccoy, the announcer of the Phoenix Suns, and I asked for a picture with him. When I posted it on social media I couldn’t believe how bald I looked and all the people who posted about my baldness.
Q: Describe your experience with hair loss? SM: My hair loss began 6 years ago when my hairstylist discovered a quarter size round bald spot in the back of my head. After losing a majority of my hair, I wanted to know my options to stop hair loss and saw a dermatologist who diagnosed me with Alopecia. There was no information provided just a term which lead me to the Internet – where most of us are guilty of “self-treating” our symptoms.
Q: Describe your consultation experience at National Hair Loss? JJ: It was very informative. Carly Klein showed me where I landed on the Norwood Scale for hair loss and where I was headed with no stabilizing the loss. Then she showed me the microscopic photos of my hair, which revealed how weak my hairs were and how many could be reversed. Q: Have National Hair Loss treatment boosted your confidence? JJ: Yes, I feel good about it because I trust National Hair Loss. I know what I have done in the past and got results. I realize that I have to stop the loss but I want the best alternatives for regrowth. Q: Would you recommend National Hair Loss to a friend? JJ: I have done ALL the research. I know every doctor and every recovery program and what I’m doing and whom I’m doing it with. That said, I would 100% recommend this to anyone experiencing hair loss. I have some of my closest friends on the program with me!

Q: What advancements have been made in male hair loss treatment? SM: It’s important to know there are more options than a hair transplant, medication, or creams. At National Hair Loss we pride ourselves on evolving our treatments with the latest science and technology. Our prevention treatments allow men to be proactive as they start to notice hair loss, thinning, or receding hairlines. Prevention treatments are effective in stopping genetic hair loss and working on a cellular level to rejuvenate hair follicles. Q: How do you know which hair loss treatment is best for you? SM: It’s important to know there are more options than a hair transplant, medication, or creams. National Hair Loss uses the advanced treatments to work on a cellular level to rejuvenate hair follicles. I find the biggest value of working with Carly Klein and National Hair Loss is always leading with education for the best interest of each patient. I believe that with education you’ll find more effective treatments. Q: What advice do you have for men with hair loss? SM: I believe men do care about their hair loss but have lost faith there are proven methods to help. My goal is to provide men with insight and proper resources to learn more about their hair loss and treatment options. Hair restoration isn’t your only option, be proactive and stop your hair loss at the first sign.
Experts in MonaLisa Touch News Update: The MonaLisa Touch has now been FDA approved in the U.S. for over 2 years and at Arizona Women’s Care more than 1000 procedures have brought amazing results to women across the Southwest region. This amazing NON HORMONAL treatment for vaginal dryness, painful intercourse, frequent bladder or vaginal infections and other symptoms that result from a lack of estrogen has revolutionized our success in treating these disheartening issues. In a recent Stanford University study, reductions in dryness and painful intercourse were especially marked, dropping an average of 75% and 66% respectively. As Lindsay (age 56) states, “I was skeptical, but I needed to try something. After the 3 treatments, intercourse was so much better I could not believe it. I actually asked my husband if we could do it again, and he was shocked! It has made such a difference in our relationship.” The MonaLisa Touch uses fractional CO2 laser therapy
to regenerate collagen and rid the vaginal mucosa of the dry atrophic cells. Three simple treatments in the office 6 weeks apart have shown incredible improvements in vaginal atrophy. These treatments take about 5 minutes and are virtually painfree, no anesthesia is needed. As women caring for women, our expertise and customer service are unsurpassed in the valley. Our staff of all-female physicians were the 1st board certified OB/GYNS in the state of Arizona to perform the MonaLisa Touch procedure. We welcome you to any of our open house seminars to learn more about the MonaLisa Touch! You will have the opportunity to meet with the doctors and talk with the patients who have had this life changing procedure. One last testimonial from Rhonda (age 61) sums up why we do what we do, “Thank you Arizona Women’s Care for offering me the MonaLisa Touch! It is an amazing treatment. I am 100% back to feeling like I did 20 years ago!”

It’s reported that roughly .03 percent of high school basketball players make it to the NBA, and only 1.3 percent make it from the NCAA to the NBA. Basically, only the best of the best players will make it to the coveted court. Our cover feature and one of the newest Phoenix Suns players, Josh Jackson is one of those elite. Jackson had a quick rise to the NBA, albeit a well-deserved one. He has probably been playing since before he can remember, working his way to the top from high school to college to the No. 4 pick overall in the 2017 NBA draft. We spoke to him (page 46) about his life as a rookie on the Phoenix Suns, his strong work ethic that got him to the position he – literally – is in today, and his hopes for his time in the Valley of the Sun. The tip off of basketball season also brings the beginning of the holiday season. While it’s easy to get caught up in the parties and fall off track, it’s also important to stay on your regimen or path to recovery. On page 20, we’re talking 10 tips to stay on your recovery path during the holiday season. And, we’ve also got ways to say sane during the season covered on page 34. Also for fall, we spoke to a local aesthetician about three fall masks you can make at home using products you’ll find in very own kitchen (page 54). During the holidays, many people start coupling up and get engaged. If you’re already dating someone but you’re not quite sure if they are “the one,” check out page 52 for a list of 10 relationship red flags. Hint: if your significant other reminds you of all 10, run! Enjoy Thanksgiving with your family and have that extra helping of stuffing this year – you deserve it! Since 2010, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates the flu has resulted in between 9.2 million and 35.6 million illnesses. Fall Checklist: flu Shot U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is urging everyone 6 months and older to get a flu shot, as health officials are worried this season could be a “bad one.” Australia, which experiences its flu season in summer because it’s in the Southern Hemisphere, has been hard hit this year. The major culprit has been the H3N2 flu strain, which is known for causing severe disease, and small clusters of H3N2 are already showing up in the U.S., according to published reports. Flu Symptoms: Fever* or feeling feverish/chills Sore throat Runny or stuffy nose Muscle or body aches
Family fit Games While research has shown that fitness trackers alone fail in helping people reach their fitness goals, setting a goal with your family can help you (and them) finally reach those goals. In the study that proved this, adults had daily step goals, and families were chosen at random for team competitions and prizes. Those who set the goals, and made them, were randomly rewarded and the project was a success. The overall message: a little family-friendly competition helps everyone reach their goals.

Get Inked for Your Health Soon your body ink could detect medical emergencies. Researchers at Harvard and MIT recently developed color-changing “smart tattoos” that can detect dehydration and blood sugar levels. The special ink (which can be done in invisible ink that isn’t visible until hit with certain color lights), called Dermal Abyss, is enhanced with colorimetric and fluorescent biosensors that change color based on the chemistry of the pH, sodium, glucose, and hydrogen ions present in the interstitial fluid of our bodies. The colors change depending on what the ink is testing for: pH sensing ink changes from purple to pink, increased glucose levels change from green to brown, and the sodium indicator’s green becomes more intense under UV light. There is an accompanying app that analyzes the tattoo. Source: www. nydailynews.com.

Cut the Meat Suffering from laryngopharyngeal reflux? A new study shows that a vegetarian diet may provide relief similar to widely used medications. People with laryngopharyngeal reflux usually don’t have heartburn, they have symptoms like hoarseness, chronic sore throat, persistent coughing, excessive throat clearing and a feeling of a lump in the throat. The researchers put their patients on a 90 percent vegetarian diet, and 63 percent of patients on the diet were showing at least a six-point drop on a scale called the reflux symptom index. Perhaps, in this case, less meat can mean less medications.
Call it the #JolieEffect Angelina Jolie’s decision to undergo breast removal to reduce her risk of breast cancer has led other women to do so, according to a new study. The number of preventative cases rose from 3.3 bimonthly cases per 1 million to 6.3 cases per 1 million, 20 months after her announcement. Researchers note that health care providers and policymakers need to pay attention when these highprofile cases go viral to ensure they are prepared to handle the influx of patients. One Clock That Shouldn’t Spring Forward Studies show that if we mess with the body’s natural sleep-wake cycle, there is a “price” to be paid. When our bodies experience a new “time,” side effects include blood pressure going up, hunger hormones get thrown off and blood sugar control goes south. Over time, if living against the clock becomes a way of life, this may set the stage for weight gain and metabolic diseases such as Type 2 diabetes. Solutions to avoid this? Try to avoid a string of all-nighters, redeye flights and anything else that keeps you up when you are normally asleep. Source: www.npr.com.

Hair Dye Linked to Breast Cancer Risk According to a recent study by London surgeon Kefah Mokbel, women who frequently dye their hair may be at greater risk of contracting breast cancer, a new study found. Professor Kefah Mokbel, a breast cancer surgeon at the Princess Grace Hospital in London, found a fourteen percent increase in the disease among women who color their hair, according to the Sunday Times of London. While it is still unclear if the products are a direct cause of the disease, and further study needs to be done, Mokbel suggests women dye their hair only up to five times a year, and use products with natural ingredients, such as beetroot, he suggested. source: www. nypost.com.
UNDERSTANDING NEUROPATHY
Dr. Richard Jacoby, Scottsdale’s leading Podiatry expert answers your questions Q: WHAT IS PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY? A: Your nervous system is divided into two regions – central and
peripheral. The central system includes the brain and spinal cord, while the peripheral system includes all the nerve roots and extremity nerves emanating from it. It’s a broad network, and all of these peripheral nerves transmit vital motor and sensory information throughout the body. A peripheral neuropathy may interrupt or distort some of these transmissions. Diabetic neuropathy and chemo neuropathy are two of the most prevalent kinds.
Q: WHAT CAUSES PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY? A: The most common cause of peripheral neuropathy is diabetes.
Sometimes the cause is completely unknown (idiopathic). Here are some other potential causes for neuropathy: • • • • • • •
Autoimmune disorders rheumatoid arthritis or lupus Chronic kidney disease Infections such as HIV and liver infections Low levels of vitamin B12 or other problems with your diet Poor blood flow to the legs Underactive thyroid gland Toxin exposure such as lead, mercury, and solvents may lead to peripheral neuropathy. • Pharmaceutical drugs used to treat infections, cancer, seizures, or high blood pressure.
Q: WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF NEUROPATHY? A: Signs and symptoms include: • Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet that gradually move upward into the extremities • Pain that is sharp or throbbing • Severe sensitivity to touch • Poor coordination • Frequent falls • Muscle weakness • Paralysis
EXTREMITY HEALTH CENTER UNIQUE MEDICAL SOLUTIONS
Q: WHAT KIND OF TREATMENTS EXIST FOR PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY? A: There are several treatments available for peripheral neuropathy. • Medications, including pain medications, neurologic modifying agents, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSDAIDs), and antidepressants • Surgery, including the Dellon® Procedure for diabetic neuropathy or nerve release for mono-neuropathies like carpal tunnel syndrome • Calmare® device, a non-invasive FDA-cleared medical device shown to effectively alleviate pain associated with neuropathy • Laser therapy using specific wavelengths of light having a strong anti-inflammatory effect on tissues that help decrease pain • Injections, including steroids, numbing agents, and stem-cell rich anti-inflammatory injections Despite treatments on the market, many patients come to Extremity Health Centers reporting their doctor was unable to alleviate their pain. Dr. Jacoby welcomes challenging cases and has achieved unprecedented results in many of these patients. If you suffer from peripheral neuropathy that has not been successfully treated despite medications, schedule a consultation with Dr. Jacoby today to learn more.

10 Tips to Avoid a Relapse During the Holiday Season ety and are positive influences. Spend time doing activities you enjoy and avoid places or people that stir up unwanted feelings that can be a trigger. 5. Have a go-to nonalcoholic drink – You can enjoy parties and events with your favorite safe beverage. Be specific when ordering a nonalcoholic drink or you could bring your own beverages.
The holiday season is a wonderful time to get together with loved ones to celebrate at parties and family gatherings. With the festivities also come many triggers for those battling addiction. Although this is a time to be merry, recovering addicts can feel the pressures and stress to socialize. Some may even feel lonely. If you are on the recovery journey, you should familiarize yourself with guidelines to avoid a relapse during the holidays. Here are 10 important tips to help you stay strong and positive on your recovery path while also enjoying holidays!
1. Have a plan – Planning ahead is the most important thing to remember. If you are a person who gets sad or lonely during this time of year, make a plan to surround yourself with supportive friends and family. If you are going to a holiday party, have a backup plan in case you become uncomfortable or need a reason to leave.

2. Do your best not to stress – The holidays are a stressful time of year. Don’t allow others to place unrealistic demands on you, learn how to say no if you are uncomfortable and don’t let others pressure you. Your sobriety is about you, not them. 3. Keep attending group meetings –
Always make time to attend peer support groups or meetings. This can help ensure your support team is as strong as ever. Staying up-to-date with sessions is a priority in recovery and avoiding a relapse. 4. Surround yourself with positivity – Spend time with those that support your sobri-
6. Bring a buddy – Having a friend or loved one who understands and supports you at a social function can help relieve stress and pressure. This can be anybody, as long as they will make you feel more comfortable and relaxed in any kind of environment. 7. Manage your money – Financial difficulties are common throughout the holiday season. Buying gifts for others and traveling can place stress on you and others around you. your money during this time, it can eliminate negative feelings that often serve as triggers. 8. Don’t isolate yourself – Make it a point to attend some social events and functions. These events can be exhausting and sometimes even difficult to be at, but connecting with others is good during your path to recovery. 9. Avoid cravings – Whether it’s the temptation to eat another gingerbread cookie or the pressure to drink, it is vital to understand and fight cravings. Know what methods and tricks work best for you when dealing with temptation. 10. Get in the holiday spirit – The holidays can be stressful and chaotic, but it’s important to find some ways to enjoy them. You can make new traditions with friends or loved ones or even volunteer locally. Try ice skating or working at a food bank with some friends.

Poke Popularity The fresh fish trend takes over Scottsdale
The popularity of poke in the last two years is illustrated by the insurgence of custom poke spots making a splash all over the Valley. While there were merely a select few at the beginning of the year, we now have a deluge of options, from fast-casual spots that let you build your own bowls to elevated fine dining options on some of your favorite restaurant menus. The simple, fresh elements that are paired with poke, whether in a bowl or integrated into a stand-alone dish, provide heart healthy omega-3s and loads of protein. If you’re experiencing a tough time determining which spots are worth your while, here’s a breakdown of some of the best places for poke in Scottsdale.
Ahipoki Bowl Ahipoki Bowl offers up seemingly endless bowl creation opportunities, an ideal spot for those looking to produce their own culinary masterpiece. You can pick from an assortment of proteins, like tuna, salmon, albacore, octopus, shrimp, scallops and more. The sauces vary from conventional (garlic soy mirin or their house sauce) to uncommon (wasabi citrus and kimchi sauce), with oodles of toppings to finish your bowl off. 2805 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.219.9310; www. ahipokibowl.com. Chula Seafood This Valley hot spot has its own fishing boat in southern California, making constant trips back and forth in the refrigerated truck to deliver freshness to

customers. No need to rack your brain struggling to figure out the best bowl combinations, they are all laid out for you here. The Hawaiianstyle poke is as close to Maui as you are going to get without the pricey airfare. If you prefer to mix things up, try the sweet-and-sour salmon poke or the spicy tuna bowl. 8015 E. Roosevelt St., Scottsdale; 480.621.5121; www. chulaseafood.com. Coconuts’s Fish Café The poke appetizer at Coconuts was so beloved by patrons that the proprietors elected to add a poke bowl to the menu. That same flavorful sequence that is available with housemade taro chips now comes over a bed of brown rice or mixed greens and is topped with pickled

cucumbers, radishes, mangos, edamame, avocado, red onions and ginger. Multiple locations; www.cocountsaz.com. Hula’s Modern Tiki If the thought of a ton of options is too much for you, the island-style poke at Hula’s is likely just what you need. This starter blends all the factors that make poke bowls so satisfying: ahi tuna, soy sauce, sesame oil, avocado, onions and macadamia nuts. Classic, pure and bright, this variation is the perfect “gateway” poke – one bite and you will be hooked. 7213 E. 1st Ave., Scottsdale; 480.970.4852; www. hulasmoderntiki.com. Koi Poke Koi Poke adds a little touch of fancy to the traditional
bowl options with lobster and champagne butter. The dish also includes generous cuts of sashimi, allowing you to really experience the buttery flavors of your protein lightly dressed with the sauce of your choice. The toppings get a little drama (and added health benefit) with shaved Brussels sprouts and kale. Up the ante on your healthy bowl additions and you won’t feel bad about trying the Hawaiian snow ice for dessert. 18221 N. Pima Road, Scottsdale; 480.209.1137; www. koipoke.com.
OBON Sushi Ramen Bar While poke is not the primary focus of this newish eatery, its clearly not an afterthought. This lone menu entry grants you the option of tuna, salmon or rainbow trout adorned with cilantro, seaweed salad, crispy onions, jalapeno, scallions, avocado, cucumber and a fiery dressing all on a bed of rice. 15037 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 602.491.2796; www. fukushuconcepts. com/obon. Poke Bar While there aren’t
as many premade bowl options here (many people create their own), the fine folks at Poke Bar are striving for quality over quantity. The classic elements are meticulously chosen with an abundance of attention devoted to the flavor profiles and the end result. Guests are loving the kale base for the bowls and if you’re feeling a little mischievous, get the nacho base for an added crunch. 10701 N. weight loss news / complied by Kelly Potts
Hunger is in the eye of the Beholder How filling you think a meal will be can affect how much you eat later. In a small study, researchers gave 26 participants a three-egg omelet. However, the participants were told they were either having a two-egg omelet or a four-egg omelet. Those who ate the “smaller omelet” said they were much hungrier after two hours, ate much more of a pasta lunch and consumed significantly more calories throughout the day than those who believed they had eaten a larger omelet. Source: www.medlineplus.gov.
The Case for Part-time Dieting Following a full-time diet isn’t for everyone, and it turns out it may not have to be. A new study performed in Australia found a secret to weight loss: take a break from dieting every few weeks. Researchers from the University of Tasmania found that obese men who dieted continuously for 16 weeks lost less weight overall – 20 pounds versus 31 – than those whose diets followed a two-weeks-on/ two-weeks-off cycle for 30 weeks. The continuous dieters also lost less body fat than those in the intermittent group.
Kicking the Freshman 15 Getting on the scale everyday may not be the ideal scenario for college students, but a new study shows that just might be what is needed to avoid the dreaded “Freshman 15” and other college stressrelated weight gains. An estimated 70 percent of freshman college students gain an average of 4 to 8 pounds at school. Researchers found that female freshman students lost more weight when they weighed themselves at least once a day, while those who didn’t failed to shed any pounds at all.

Hard Work Pays off Think you can save money by losing weight? Well, you’re right! Researchers developed a model that simulates adults at different ages and weights ranging from normal weights to overweight to obese and calculated possible health issues and the associated additional costs over the course of their lives. The study found that 20-yearolds who were obese would spent roughly $28,000 more in a lifetime than those who were not obese. Fifty-year-olds added the most money over their lifetime, spending an additional $36,278 over their normal-weight counterparts. The oldest group, those starting at 80 years old and obese, added the least amount of additional costs – with approximately $16,880 more spent. All of that hard work does pay off. THE EFFECTIVE MEDICAL MASSAGE: MYOFASCIAL THERAPY
Dr. Geier talks a new treatment for pain management Wouldn’t it be great if you could treat the majority of all pain related symptoms with a non-invasive approach? Now, you can. As a Chiropractor, my education and training was focused on relieving pain by influencing the nervous system through the use of spinal manipulation. However, in my practice I intently focus on the myo, which is the Latin term for muscles and connective tissue called fascia. Here in lies the term Myofascial therapy. When treating pain, I chose to focus on the myofascia of the body because this is the most important component to influencing the Central Nervous System to decrease pain, specifically honing in on treating this pain by taking an alternative, non-invasive approach. Unfortunately, myofascial therapy receives little attention as a major source of pain and is seldom taught in modern medical school training. Even more unfortunate is the lack of insurance reimbursement for this important therapy. So, let’s dig into the topic a little deeper.
running through, around and crisscrossing every inch of your body including muscle, organs, blood vessels, nerves, spinal cord, brain and skin. The central nervous system receives its greatest amount of sensory nerves from myofascial tissue. This means that the fascia is as important or more important than muscle in sensory input delivery. The key to this statement is that your myofascia becomes the byproduct of your environment without you even realizing it. It experiences stress, memorizes chronic poor posture, feels the weight of your head sitting at the computer all day, and permanently holds onto old untreated injuries. As a result of never ending signaling to the brain, the body develops symptoms like pain and endocrine dysfunction like adrenal fatigue, dysfunctional mood and brain fog, to name a few. If the fascia controls the information that can influence the brain, then this is the first step to calming down the body’s pain response and also improving overall global body function.
THE SCIENCE BEHIND PAIN AND MYOFASCIA The muscular system is the largest sensory organ. Approximately 50 percent of your body weight is made up of about 400 skeletal muscles. Your fascia is actually one giant interconnected web of connective tissue
WHAT IS MYOFASCIAL THERAPY? It is a deep tissue treatment involving the breakdown of fascial adhesions known as trigger points. These trigger points ultimately create a permanently shortened muscle, resulting in pain and muscle dysfunction and, in turn, weakness and uncoordinated movements. Myofascial therapy can be performed in many ways including by a practitioner’s hands, using tools that break down adhesions and stretching. This therapy proves to be a very efficient and effective therapy for pain management, improving athletic performance and reducing cellulite.
COMMON INJURIES RELATED TO MYOFASCIAL TRIGGER POINTS • Pain or stiffness in your neck, mid- or lowback • Headaches or jaw pain • Sciatica and other nerve related symptoms like numbness and tingling • Tendonitis, Bursitis and Plantar Fasciitis • Joint pain especially in your shoulder, knee or wrist • Generalized dull, achy pain • Athletic performance issues
HOW DOES HEALTHY FASCIA BECOME UNHEALTHY FASCIA? This happens when extra layers of fascia grow due to stress, trauma, repetitive motions, dehydration and inflammation. Inflammation comes from repetitive working out or even eating inflammatory foods such as (but not limited to) sugar, fried food, certain oils and processed wheat.

Stop and Go Three movements for a strength workout We put three simple movements together that almost everyone can do in a stop-and-go format that will challenge your body. The cutting-edge formatting puts a new spin on the basic pushup, squat and glute bridge.
How it Looks The setup is simple: complete 30 seconds of reps then immediately move into a static hold for the remaining 30 seconds. Once you complete all 60 seconds of work, rest for 1 minute before moving to the next exercise. Once you complete all three movements, you’ve finished one cycle. Complete four total cycles for a stop-and-go workout you can do anywhere, anytime.

11/17
Movement One: Pushups Complete 30 seconds of pushup reps then immediately move into a static hold for the remaining 30 seconds. When preforming a pushup, focus on keeping your body in a straight line head to heel, squeezing the glutes and bracing the core. Keep your hands about shoulder width apart and your elbows packed tight to your body. Movement Two: Squats We are going back to the basic bodyweight squat for 30 seconds of reps then holding for the next 30 seconds in the bottom position of the squat, equaling 60 seconds of work. On your squat, focus on keeping your back straight and chest out, driving through the heels as you push through the floor. Having a nice solid base about shoulder width apart or wider if needed when you get into the hold position at the bottom is key. Movement Three: Glute Bridges We are getting into glute bridge reps to build up that backside. The first 30 seconds are bridge reps and the next 30 seconds are a hold at the bottom of the movement. Focus on driving the heels through the floor while pushing the hips and glutes toward the ceiling, trying to really squeeze the glutes for all 30 seconds.

Spirit of the Season Surviving the stress of the holidays
ority to come together with the family you enjoy, friends who have become family or those closest to you whom remind you that you have a place in this world. Raise your energy, be social and get inspired as you finish out one year and enter another with a tribe that says “you belong and you are supported.” We see you!
It’s shocking to think that 2017 is already coming to an end. Can you believe it? 2018 is waiting just around the corner. Yet, before we embark on the resolutions and epic adventures of a new year, we must prepare ourselves to survive the upcoming holiday season. How do we embrace this joyous time of year and manage the stress and anxiety that comes with it? Check out five ways to keep sane and turn those holiday blues into holiday “woo hoo’s!” #1 Self-care Just like any other day of the year, it is key that we continue to find time for ourselves in order to center our spirit and ground our intentions. Participate in a meditation, take a yoga class, get in a workout, go for a walk or a hike, or receive a massage. Give yourself permis-
sion to honor that mind/body connection so that you are physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually prepared for all that’s to come. You’ll be glad you did. #2 Prioritize Enter into the season with a plan of action. While multitasking is an excellent skill to have, many
people will attempt to prepare for all November/December celebrations at the same time. This can be stressful and overwhelming. There is nothing wrong with looking ahead and creating your list of ideas and to-do’s. Yet, when it comes time for action, allow yourself to focus your efforts and
enjoyment on one event at a time. Be fully present in your process. #3 Come Together No one should ever spend any holiday alone. No, that does not mean you force yourself to endure the company of those you try to avoid. Instead, make it a pri-
#4 Financial Awareness It’s important to be financially responsible and realistic during this time of year. The holiday season is known for creating large amounts of unnecessary debt. Don’t add more stress by creating burdens you will have to pay off later. Instead, practice mindful spending and conscious gifting. This means purchasing only what is a must on that list or creating something of value for those who truly need it most and deserve it. Don’t obligate yourself to purchase for every person you know. Get creative and add a little personal touch. The quality of your relationship is really the gift that is valued most. You can’t regift that.
#5 ‘Tis the Reason The greatest stress relief comes to us once we embody the true message of the season. Goodwill toward all men, women and children. Find ways to give back and be willing to receive. Be of service to others. Create value in the life of someone else as you create value in yours. Make gratitude a standard of how you show up in this life. This is what it means to be the example. Carry this meaning with you and a share this message along your journey all year long. At the end of the day, take time to share in this coming season of gratitude and giving. Be humbled by the blessings which you’ve received throughout the year. Release anything or anyone that no longer serves your highest good. Shed any remaining excuses and fears that have held you back. Feel the stress melt away when you realize that what you are left with is the awareness of your own growth and the passion to motivate another year of your own creation.

How to Outsmart Type 2 Diabetes 5 simple strategies to avoid the diagnosis
“You have diabetes.” Every 21 seconds, someone will hear those words — maybe even you. World Diabetes Day is November 14, but just a few decades ago, you didn’t hear a lot about diabetes. Today, we all know someone with diabetes. And its potential health effects are serious. People with diabetes are twice as likely to suffer heart attacks and strokes, according to the American Diabetes Association (ADA). And they’re at risk for a host of life-limiting conditions, including kidney failure and blindness. Here’s happier news: There are simple things you can do

every day to help prevent or delay Type 2 diabetes. More common in adults, Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition that affects the way your body metabolizes sugar (glucose), an important source of fuel. And it’s claiming the health of too many people — including more children — as our waistlines expand and activity levels decline. Once diagnosed, Type 2 diabetes can usually be controlled with a combination of oral medications and insulin, as well as a good diet, exercise and stress management. But why wait to hear those three little words – “You have diabetes” — when you can take steps to prevent it?
If your doctor confirms that you are pre-diabetic, what you do next can help you avoid Type 2 diabetes. And that can make the difference between living a healthy life — or dealing with chronic health problems.
Start by getting a blood sugar test. For people 45 or older, or those who are overweight, have heart disease or other diabetes risk factors, the ADA recommends routine screening for Type 2 diabetes. If your doctor confirms that you are pre-diabetic, what you do next can help you avoid Type 2 diabetes. And that can make the difference between living a healthy life — or dealing with chronic health problems. Your best bet is to maintain a healthy weight, eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly and manage stress levels. Start with these five lifestyle recommendations: 1. GET PHYSICAL Aim for at least 150 minutes of exercise each week — which is not as hard as it sounds if you choose activities that you enjoy and can stick with. Research shows that aerobic exercise and resistance training can help control diabetes. 2. FIBER UP Reach for more fruits, vegetables, beans, whole grains and nuts. These high-fiber foods help reduce diabetes risk by improving your blood sugar control. They also lower your risk of heart disease and — bonus — they make you feel full, helping you lose weight. 3. FAVOR WHOLE GRAINS Ignore fad diets that cast carbohydrates as the enemy. We need carbohydrates for energy and to fuel our brains. Instead, switch to whole grains for breads, pastas and cereals, which help maintain healthy blood sugar levels. Hint: Look for “whole” on the ingredient list. 4. LOSE EXTRA POUNDS Heavier than you should be? Start now to shed extra weight — preventing diabetes may depend on it. Get practical tips from The Mayo Clinic Diabetes Diet. Participants in one large study who lost a modest amount of weight — around 7 percent of initial body weight — and exercised regularly, reduced the risk of developing diabetes by almost 60 percent. 5. MAKE A (MEAL) PLAN The best eating plans feature a balanced diet, portion control and regular mealtimes. That means planning ahead. Try to eat your meals at a regular time each day — ideally every 4 to 5 hours — and have consistent amounts of carbohydrates at every meal. The ideal amount of carbohydrate grams for you depends on your activity level and weight. For help with a meal plan, ask your doctor to recommend a registered dietitian. He or she will create a personalized and realistic meal plan that fits your budget, meets your health needs and reflects your food likes and dislikes. With a little planning and professional guidance, you can outsmart Type 2 diabetes.

Taking advantage of children’s intrinsic motivation to move and play and their high-tech upbringings, ROXs Run&Scan uses sensors, light and sound effects in a variety of gaming modes to get kids exercising their bodies and minds. Each gaming set includes one ROXs Run&Scan and one silicone strap, eight PEBBs – interactive action pebbles – and an inductive charging plate. The extremely durable ROXs sensor is constructed with an ABS and polycarbonate shell so it can be placed nearly anywhere – on the ground indoors or outside, strapped to the back of a chair, the branch or trunk of a tree, or even worn by players using the silicon strap. Inside each Bluetooth enabled ROXs unit are multi-color RGB LED lights, a speaker, gyroscope and accelerometer. To begin play, kids or parents open the ROXs app and select one of five pre-set games. One example is Zoo Break, where kids pretend the animals have escaped from the zoo and they must return them to save the day. The ROXs is placed in a central area and the PEBBs are placed in a runnable range around it. Each PEBBs features a unique animal. When the ROXs emits that animal’s sound kids have to race to find and retrieve the matching pebble and scan it to score points. ROXs is designed for kids ages 6 to 10, but because the system is customizable it can be enjoyed by the entire family together. Available for $69.99 at www.a-champs.com/roxs and on Amazon. The ROXs app is available for free download from the iTunes and Google Play store.

Whether polished or plain, most people don’t pay any mind to their nails (except for the occasional manicure or stubbed toe). We have a tendency of taking these on-hand scratchers for granted and even though they seem simple, they are pretty complex. For instance, did you know that fingernails grow at a rate of 3.5 millimeters per month? Here are eight other surprising bits of knowledge about nails.
1. Battle of the sexes. Men tend to have faster growing fingernails than women, with the exception of women when they are pregnant. 2. ’Tis the season. If you notice that your nails are longer during the summer, you might be on to something. During the summer, your nails get closer to the sun than in the winter, which increases Vitamin E to help nails grow quicker.
Crazy Facts About Nails 42
ScottsdaleHealth
11/17
3. An open window. Doctors can tell a lot about your health just by examining your nails. For example, nail bed discoloration and capillaries in the cuticles can give insight into lung disease, autoimmune diseases and melanoma. 4. Tough toenails. Your toenails are twice as thick as your fingernails.
5. Keep the cuticles. While it’s common for a manicurist to cut your cuticles, it’s considered a big no-no to get rid of them. Cuticles’ main purpose is to help your nails retain moisture and seal out bacteria, so without them, you are more prone to infections. 6. Don’t sweat it. Nails are the only part of your body that doesn’t sweat – even during your most intense workout! 7. Two of a kind. Like hair, nails are made up of the protein keratin, which protects epithelial cells from damage or stress. 8. The key to growth. Typing on a computer can simulate nail growth, similar to a nail massage or tapping your nails lightly on a table.

The Phoenix Suns’ newest player brings strength and versatility to the court

Early October marked the start of the Phoenix Suns’ preseason. Their first game was held at the Moda Center in Oregon: home of the Portland Trail Blazers. The team brought a victory back to the Valley with a final score of 114 to 112. Travelling fans and those who cheered in front of their televisions likely spotted some fresh faces to the team this year, one being Josh Jackson: the Suns’ latest and greatest key to success. “My first game as a National Basketball Association (NBA) player was in Portland. I was so nervous stepping out on the court, but I quickly shook those feelings and told myself to focus on the game,” Jackson says. Jackson was considered one of the top prospects going into this year’s NBA draft. While playing his first and only season with the University of Kansas’s (KU) Jayhawks, Jackson was honored with not one, not two, but seven Big 12 Conference’s Newcomer of the Week awards. As a Jayhawk, he averaged 16.3 points on 51.3 percent shooting, 7.4 rebounds, three assists, 1.7 steals and 1.1 blocks over 35 contests. All together, this simply means that he can play basketball exceptionally well. We’re talking smoke-emanating-off-the-basketball well. Scouts and coaches had their eyes on this impressive young player from the get-go. On June 22 of this year, the Phoenix Suns swooped Jackson up before any other team could. He was selected as the No. 4 overall pick in the first round of the 2017 NBA draft. “I came into this process knowing I would be picked up by a team just not sure which one.” Jackson adds, “When I learned it was the Phoenix Suns, I was thrilled! I already knew a few players and felt like I had a real opportunity to contribute something great to the team.” He went from being a college athlete to a professional basketball player overnight. After getting drafted, Jackson and his mother boarded the first plane to Sky Harbor International Airport. His mom, Apple Jackson, helped him get settled before she headed back to their home city of Detroit. “Since day one, my mom has 100 percent been there for me. Without her help and support, I do not know if I would be where I am today,” he says.

Jackson currently resides in Paradise Valley. His days since moving here are mostly consumed with practice and games, but his drives to and from practice have become a time of relaxation and appreciation for his new surroundings. “I love being able to drive around the city and take in the beautiful scenery,” he explains. “The mountains are also new to me coming from the Midwest. I haven’t had a chance to hike them yet, but hopefully one day I will.” Athleticism runs in Jackson’s blood, specifically basketball. Both of his parents were basketball players and introduced their only child to the sport as soon as he was bigger than the basketball itself. Competitive by nature but very much a team player, Jackson also played baseball and soccer throughout his childhood. Basketball, however, captured his heart in ways the other sports did not. Jackson was 5 years old when he joined his first basketball team. Now at age 20, he has been a member of various teams: grade school teams, a college team and currently an NBA team. He admits that the camaraderie among teammates throughout the years has given him so much more than just a sport, but a community. “These guys are people I can trust,” he says. “Their friendship means the world to me.” It isn’t uncommon that new faces to the NBA are within
the age range of 19 to 23 years old. Along with Jackson, other vernal newcomers include Davon Reed and Alec Peters. Seasoned players sometimes treat the newly inducted Suns like rookies. But, more often than not, they act as mentors. “Tyson Chandler, Jared Dudley and Eric Bledsoe took us younger guys under their wing, so to speak, and showed us the ropes of being professional athletes,” Jackson expands. An active lifestyle has been Jackson’s reality for 20 years. Having played at the college level for six months before joining the Suns, Jackson’s body was already accustomed to regimented workouts. The only difference is that he no longer has to worry about balancing ball with school. At least for now… “At KU, I was studying communication. If I weren’t doing this I’d probably pursue sports journalism and broadcasting. I’ll definitely go back to complete my degree ... I promised my mom I would,” he explains. Jackson says his new routine varies every day. If the team is on the road or has back-to-back games, the workout is less strenuous. Players will go easy weightlifting and spend recovery days stretching only. Other days, especially in preparation for a game, players are more competitive — playing five-on-five with each other and lifting heavier weights. The coaches often base workouts around how players are feeling that day. “This is my career now, it’s a 24-hour thing. Sometimes I have to sacrifice certain things, like going out with friends, but it’s worth it. I’m always preparing by eating right and getting plenty of rest. It’s a long season so taking care of my body is priority,” Jackson explains. The Suns’ regular season began October 18 and will run until April of next year. All eyes will be on number 20 — the team’s newest small forward and shooting guard. Rather than feeling burdened by the pressure, Jackson is prepared to make all those watching proud. “My team and coach expect a lot out of me, which makes me feel good because they believe in me. So long as I continue to listen and grow, I know I am capable of doing well for myself and my team,” he affirms. When he isn’t pouring out his heart on the court, Jackson enjoys playing video games and spending time with his family. He also likes to take big shots for his community. Back in Detroit, Jackson spent a lot of time volunteering at local homeless shelters and food banks. He plans to continue his philanthropic work for organizations in his new home. “I think in order to see global change we have to start at home,” he says. When asked what piece of advice he would give to young players who aspire to join the NBA one day, the soft-spoken young man guides with wisdom and eloquence. “Keep trying; never give up on yourself. There are millions of people who play this sport, and not everyone will make it professionally. But if you want to make it, believe you can and work toward that,” To learn more about the Phoenix Suns, visit www.nba.com.

Cameron and Dana Bair have a defined list of priorities: faith first, family second and then everything else. But, it’s pretty clear that health and fitness fall pretty high under “everything else.” Neither part of the pair consciously focused on health or fitness growing up, but both enjoyed playing sports and, in turn, their love for athletics inadvertently paved the way for an active adult lifestyle. Dana grew up naturally active as a child, which led to her participating in competitive sports, such as soft ball, track, volleyball and basketball, during her middle school and high school years. Cameron also played a sport or two each season as a child, eventually leading him to compete at the college level. He also spent time in the Australian Football League, Canadian Football League and in the NFL as an Arizona Cardinal player. These days, Cameron is an entrepreneur juggling two inventions and Dana is a fifth-grade teacher and student government advisor. For the pair, activity is still a major priority. “As an adult, I find myself still having to play a sport. After football ended, my sport of choice was competitive powerlifting, then it was triathlon, then obstacle course racing (Spartan, Warrior, etc.) ... now Ironman at 47,” Cameron says. After they married, Dana discovered it was fun to do things with Cameron to help stay in shape (weightlifting, triathlon, obstacle racing and relays), and she also keeps active on campus, whether she is planning and running the schoolwide annual dodgeball tournament or simply shooting hoops or playing four-square during recess. She also focuses on cardio each morning, sticking with a regular workout routine. “I like to start my day with both a spiritual fitness and physical fitness activity. So, I typically wake up, study my Bible, spend time praying, and go for a run or trip to the gym.”
Cameron is competitive with himself, always pushing to beat his own time or go that extra mile. He spends his time circuit training, hiking, swimming and cycling. Both parts of the couple also prioritize nutrition. Dana enjoys everything in moderation, but sticks to a low-carb approach when she is being strict, and Cameron tries to eat less sugar and carbs, and sticks to smaller portions, avoiding empty calories. He focuses on making smart choices, but also allows himself a fun cheat meal when he is out at a party or with friends. “A happy life is more important than a fit life,” he says. The Bairs have also made their mark on the triathlon scene. They have both won first place overall male and female in three triathlons, with Cameron winning an additional three more overall. How do they push through these difficult races and keep going? The answer goes back to their faith. Cameron considers all exercise an act of worship. “I try to remember that good health is a blessing,” Dana affirms. “When I want to quit, I think of the person who would love to be able to do what I am doing at that moment but is unable to due to physical impairments. That motivates me to keep pushing, for them.” The dynamic duo’s beliefs flow into the rest of the family, passing on their priorities to their 17-year-old daughter, Cammie, and 15-year-old son, Colter. Aside from their children’s individual active pursuits, they enjoy hiking and participating in races as a family, calling on each other as a support system. “Both our kids pursue health and fitness in their own creative ways and I smile when I think that Dana and I might have played a role in encouraging that,” Cameron says.

10 Relationship Red Flags Protect yourself from Mr. or Ms. Wrong
Award-winning blogger Ingrid Levin, is the creator and founder of the new INGRID MADISON AVE Blog (www. ingridmadisonave.com). Although she is not a licensed therapist or certified guru, Levin has almost 30 years of dating and living experience and has been through the ups and downs of previous engagements and marriages. Overall, Ingrid hopes her posts will help her readers better themselves psychologically and spiritually.
There are some things in a relationship that just can’t be ignored. While it’s common for your partner to have little quirks that might get on your nerves or be different from what you imagined when daydreaming as a young girl or boy, others are neon red flags, flapping in the wind, waiting for you to notice them. Relationships can be messy, and it’s better acknowledge these flags before you get too deep so you can protect your dignity, self-worth and leave before things go too far. Here are 10 flashing signs that your partner might not be “the one.”
1. Insensitive to your needs. You can quickly see someone is insensitive to your needs when you tell them something sad, such as your pet died, and they soon turn the conversation back themselves. When you need your partner most, he or she should be there, no questions asked. If not, this person lacks empathy and consideration. 2. Brags about previous romantic conquests. Be cautious when your partner repeat-
52
ScottsdaleHealth
11/17
edly regales you with tales of his or her romantic past, or updates you regularly about singles who find him/her attractive, or brags publicly to friends about being intimate with you. This is a clear sign of insecurity. 3. Tries to drive a wedge between you, your family and friends. A controlling person who wants you all to themselves is likely someone worth running away from before you are emotionally invested. Cutting you off from
your friends and family allows them to manipulate you and will affect your relationships with your loved ones in the future – even after you break up. 4. Uses you for sex. One signal that distinguishes a person looking for “real love” versus someone who’s not is how he or she treats you when you’re not having sex. This person may disappear emotionally (if not physically) as soon as their gratification is met. You’re left hanging feeling alone and empty. 5. Constantly puts others down. A person that puts others down to build themselves up suffers from inadequacies and an inferiority complex. They are critical and judgmental to put up a facade of superiority and disguise hidden insecurities. This pattern is to boost their own desirability and acceptability in society. 6. Unwilling to make a serious commitment. If you and your partner have been dating for a reasonable length of time and your partner is unwilling to make a serious commitment because he or she wants to keep his/her romantic “options open,” it may be cause for concern. There are many possible reasons for a partner’s lack of commitment. Some are reasonable and deserve serious consideration. Others may be selfish. This person is consciously, or subconsciously, thinking you’re not
“the one,” but a backup or stopgap. 7. You feel drained and depleted of happiness/energy. When you are with the right person, they fill you up with energy and joy. The reason for this depletion is that you are compromising your heart, or negotiating your sense of integrity.
KFNX exclusively features Five of the Top Ten Talk Shows in the country
8. They make you feel dumb. You can never do it right comments; it’s always your fault. They make themselves out to be always right then make you apologize when they are wrong. 9. Walking on eggshells. Your partner behaves or acts all too frequently with a constellation of traits that are toxic. So toxic, that you have to be ever so careful around them lest they lash out at you. 10. You are being stashed. Stashing is when a man or a woman never introduces you to their friends, family, dog, cat, or ferret. You don’t exist in any of their social media accounts. They haven’t once shared anything that remotely suggests you’re an item.

choices, environmental exposure and ethnicity. Our aging look is a complicated interaction of the changes occurring within each bodily tissue. This includes changes to bone, cartilage, muscles, fat, ligaments and skin. Aging of any of these tissues results in differences to our overall appearance. Our bone structure forms the foundation that we start to layer each of these other tissues over. It’s no different from building a new house. If we change the foundation, we change the ultimate size, shape and appearance of the finished dwelling. If we want a 6,000-square-foot home, we need an appropriate foundation to attach the walls and roof to. As we age, our overall facial bone structure shrinks. However, it is not an even process. There is a reduction in facial height but also some widening and deepening of the face. If the bone foundation changes, then there needs to be changes to the walls and roof. Our facial fat sags south aided by the pull of gravity. This leads to the appearance of “jowls.” We lose lip support which results in “lip lines” or “smoker’s lines,” and our “smile lines” and “marionette lines” deepen. To complicate things, there is also ongoing aging to the muscles and ligaments as well. The contribution of each of these result in our loss of youthful appearance. Aging changes to our skin has received the most attention by researchers and cosmetic companies. The global skin care market today is a $110 billion industry. The anti-aging products are the fastest growing segment of the market. More and more products contain active ingredients with proven results. As we age, our skin produces less collagen and elastin than we did in our youth. Our skin is becoming thinner and less springy, which leads to sagging and wrinkles. The cell turnover slows down causing changes in the brightness and texture of the skin. Slower cell production makes it harder to recover from photoaging sun damage and oxidative damage from environmental pollutants.
