Contents Hello, 2021! For many, a new year conjures feelings of hope, positivity, and the idea of starting with a clean slate. While some aspects of 2020 will follow us through the year, I’m still feeling hopeful and positive as we adjust to our “new normal” of Scottsdale – and the world. The city has truly adapted and so have the events – all including new safety procedures to make attendees feel comfortable. While the annual Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction may be pushed from January to March, it’s still marked in the calendar for its 50th anniversary and we are gearing up for a joy ride. To date, the auction company has raised over $127 million for deserving charities, with Michael Phelps Foundation set to be the next beneficiary, thanks to the upcoming auction of a 2010 Ford Roush Mustang created in collaboration between Sherwin-Williams, Roush and BarrettJackson. We talk to Scottsdale couple Michael and Nicole Phelps about the work they are doing with their foundation on page 34. A handful of outdoor events are also back on the January docket, including the Waste Management Phoenix Open (page 65), Arizona Fine Art Expo (page 72), and the Arizona Sage Market (page 68). The new year is also a time of reinvention and that idea takes many different forms, from reconnecting to nature (page 96) to reaching fitness goals by way of unique workouts (page 70). Style may also be at top of mind when thinking of transformation. On page 38, get to know the creative visionaries behind five local fashion brands and find comfy yet still cute styles for winter on page 86. Additional highlights include an inside look at the new Benjamin’s Upstairs (page 76), warming pasta dishes across the Valley (page 108) and a honey-based local tonic company 104. Whether making goals or just going with the flow, may our new normal exceed all expectations and bring some fun along the way. New Year, New Home

LISA ROBERTS CAN MAKE THE PROCESS AS SMOOTH AS POSSIBLE COVID-19 HAS DEFINITELY CREATED special circumstances for homebuyers and the housing market is on fire with recordlow mortgage rates and a sudden wave of relocations made possible by remote work. Lisa Roberts, Scottsdale’s real estate expert, has some tips if you’re thinking about buying a new house in 2021! 1) Start by getting a full picture of your credit. Obtain copies of your credit report and get pre-approved for a loan. If your financial condition is stable, try to find your dream house now as the mortgage rates ar low. 2) Understand how your income, debt, and expenses affect what you can afford. Don’t forget, that there are lots of considerations beyond the sticker price, including property taxes and energy costs. 3) Retain a professional agent like Lisa Roberts that specializes in working with buyers who will have your interests at heart and can help you with strategies during the bidding process. 4) Do some research to determine the state of the market and look at sales trends of similar homes in the area or neighborhood throughout the last few months. Come up with an asking price that’s competitive, but also realistic. 5) Think long term and buy in a neighborhood with good schools. Whether you have children or not, this will have an impact on your home’s resale value. Hire your own home inspector who can point out potential problems that could require costly repairs in the future. Contact Lisa Roberts at 480-232-3291 or www.lisaroberts.com

THE POWER OF MENTORSHIP Mary Frances and Jill Petersen help young girls realize they are enough

If friends and business partners Mary Frances and Jill Petersen could have a gigantic billboard anywhere with anything on it — metaphorically speaking, to get a message out to billions — it would say: “I am enough.” “These three little words will change your life,” Frances says.

“Because knowing you are enough is such an important aspect of having inner peace and is a fundamental requirement for achieving it.” Together, these Colorado natives, who have collectively called Arizona home for 29 years, are helping girls discover that

Pulse UP CLOSE they, too, are enough. The women do this work through their business, Girls Mentorship (www.girlsmentorship.com), which they established in August 2020. “We created Girls Mentorship to equip the younger generation to communicate effectively, collaborate with others, express gratitude, think big and pick themselves up after they fail,” Frances says.

How It Started Frances and Petersen, both graduates of Arizona State University, met in 2016 working at athletic apparel store Lululemon. Back then, Frances was a fitness professional who was looking to supplement her gym income. She applied for a part-time position at the Lululemon in Scottsdale Quarter, which was managed by Petersen. “Jill hired me, and the rest is history,” Frances says. The two instantly clicked over their shared passion for personal development. They both had extensively invested in their self-growth through workshops, coaching and leadership certifications offered by their past employers. Because of this, Frances and Petersen had a deep understanding of what worked, what didn’t and where women’s insecurities laid. “Being in the work ourselves showed us not only our blind spots but all the places in which there was still room for improvement,” Frances says. “Working with hundreds of other women along the way also showed us that women between the ages of 25 and 75 still struggle with concepts like communication, abundance versus scarcity, collaboration versus competition and goal setting. “Given our experience and the kind of year 2020 was, we looked at each other at one point and asked what we could honestly do that would make a difference,” Petersen says. Girls Mentorship was their answer.

How It’s Going Their business’ mission is simple yet effective. Girls Mentorship facilitates growth for middle school- and high school-aged girls in areas that Frances and Petersen believe matter the most: self-awareness, self-confidence and self-worth. Girls participate through group coaching; one-on-one mentoring; clinics; workshops; and Camp Social, a six-week, one-hour facilitated Zoom call that focuses on topics relevant to tweens and teenagers, including communication, confidence, college prep, gratitude and friendship. “One-on-one coaching is really two-on-one coaching, as Jill and I coach all our girls as a team. So, whether it’s a group or an individual, they get us both,” Frances says. Two isn’t always better than one, but in this case, it is. Each individual’s mentoring and leadership styles are different but complementary. While both describe themselves as “hype women,” Petersen’s superpower lies within connecting and building trust quickly to help others overcome self-doubt and find their greatness. “I also find it incredibly important to pair the mind, body and

24

So Scottsdale! January ‘21

soul to experience both everyday wellness and the achievement of accomplishing goals,” she says. Frances, on the other hand, coins her mentoring style as humble, open and transparent, or HOT for short. “I share openly about my tumultuous past, dealings with family trauma, abuse, child protective services and a broken home,” she says. “All of this has led to a strong desire to want to break the mold and assist others in doing the same.”

Looking Ahead The pair hosted two Camp Socials shortly after Girls Mentorship launched. Their first series had nine girls in attendance and five in the second. While their one-on-one coaching numbers continue to grow, they’re excited to host more team-building workshops like the one they did for 15 girls this past November. “We honestly love what we do,” Petersen says. “Not only do the girls feel more happy, confident and positive about themselves after a few weeks working with us but receiving texts or phone calls from parents sharing the small wins or shifts in their daughter’s behavior makes our life! It’s our motivation to keep waking up each day and showing up fully.” Launching a business is no easy feat, especially during a global pandemic. While 2020 was no doubt challenging, it taught Frances and Petersen an invaluable lesson: that they are resilient leaders. They intend to keep this lesson at the forefront of their minds as they continue to expand Girls Mentorship. “We try not to get too wrapped up in the future. However, we want to be strategic with planning so we’re working smarter, not harder. Ultimately, we want to reach more girls and their families to make a massive impact on this younger generation,” Frances says.

FROM CORPORATE TO CARING Former executive Steve Alfonsi is now in the business of helping others

BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

One of the best investments Illinois native Steve Alfonsi ever made was leaving his job at a Fortune 500 company to build and grow businesses that help senior citizens. Today, Alfonsi is the franchise owner of ComForCare Home Care (www.comforcare.com) and founder/CEO of Royal Hospice (www.royalhospice. com) and Vital Palliative (www.vitalpalliative.com). After Alfonsi graduated from Eastern Illinois University with both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics and business, he set off to climb the corporate ladder. And although he was successful in this pursuit, having worked as a consumer sales executive for companies like Abbott Labs, P&G and Henkel, something was still lacking. “Having a father who owned skilled nursing facilities, I was somewhat familiar with the senior care industry. However, it wasn’t until years after my mother passed away in 2006 from pancreatic cancer that I looked back at my time helping her and realized there is more to life, like helping others,” Alfonsi says. “I was driven to take my personal experiences and business knowledge and positively apply them.” In 2015, he became the franchise owner of ComForCare, a home care service for aging adults who have an injury, illness or simply need extra help around the house. In 2019, Alfonsi and his team at Royal Hospice and Vital Palliative – separate entities that operate under one umbrella – began accepting patients. Both entities provide assistance, education and support to enhance the quality of life of patients with serious conditions and illnesses. “We are about to launch our second location in Portland and a third location in Tucson,” Alfonsi says. “My goal is to continue the expansion in other [cities] and keep the headquarters based in Scottsdale.” His career switch came with an enormous amount of excitement along with many unknowns. And while Alfonsi is still navigating those unknowns, he couldn’t be happier with his decision to take this professional leap of faith. “As I move through life, I did not want my biggest regrets to be the risks I did not take,” he says. “Therefore, over the past five years, I have learned to be more confident in my abilities and be brave in the decisions I make to reach my goals. This has improved my life and helped make my dreams a reality.”

MUSIC MATCHMAKER

Rachel Van Nortwick’s melodic compatibility app Vinylly is the new Cupid’s arrow

BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

When words fall short, music can help people express their feelings. Music can also conjure emotions and memories and connect all of mankind. If music is capable of this, then surely it can help people find true love, right? According to Marylander-turned-Arizonan Rachel Van Nortwick, absolutely. “Studies have shown that when we listen to music, our brains release dopamine, which in turn makes us happy. For many, that enjoyment is heightened by sharing it with someone else,” she says. Van Nortwick was tired of watching her loved ones struggle to forge meaningful relationships on existing dating apps so she decided to create her own. As a lifelong music fan, she recognized the power music has when it comes to connecting people and thus made it the lifeblood of her app. In late 2019, she launched Vinylly, which matches people based on music compatibility. Vinylly considers the streaming music data and music habits of its users. The more a user streams music, the more the app’s algorithm responds and produces new matches for them. “Beyond just a superficial swipe, Vinylly has the ability to match people on a deep level through something powerful that they share,” Van Nortwick says. At last, folks can evade those cringy pick-up lines that so often accompany dating apps and dive right into a genuine conversation about their most-played song, favorite musician or an upcoming concert. Speaking of which, Vinylly suggests livestreaming concerts to attend as well as live shows – once they return – to its users. “We’ve had to adapt quickly [in light of COVID19],” Van Nortwick says. “Users now have a variety of custom-tailored, music-inspired date ideas to stream, adding safe and socially distant options to the current dating scene.” Though new, Van Nortwick is excited to enhance her app’s user experience and expand its functionality and partnerships, with Musicians On Call as its official nonprofit partner. “Musicians On Call is sharing the healing power of music with hospital patients and caregivers, and we hope to expand our contribution to their mission,” she says.

TOTALLY TAILORED Kory Leadon finds the perfect fit with custom pieces

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY

Standing at 6 feet, 8 inches tall, Kory Leadon knows the foundation of great style for tall men is finding clothes that fit your body type and that means custom everything. When he’s not playing personal CFO to his clients at Brighton Jones or juggling dad duty to daughter Olivia, nearly 2 years old, and newborn Kai, Leadon can be found hitting the links sporting golf brand Travis Mathew or lounging at home in Lululemon. Professionally, his signature look is a suit that can transition to business casual. “It would be very common to see me in a custom long-sleeve button-down either tucked into slacks with a jacket, left open with jeans or even with rolled up sleeves and shorts in the summer,” says Leadon, noting his career has helped to shape his fashion outlook. “My style was influenced early on in my career when I watched the partners in our financial firm keep a business look that was also relatable and casual, not stuffy,” he says. For an evening outing, Leadon’s go-to button-down is accompanied by a custom blazer, cufflinks, denim and a unique pair of shoes.

What is your favorite trend? I’m really liking the white soled sneakers look by Good Man. The company was co-founded by the best player in the NFL, Russell Wilson. The look of the shoes is as versatile as Russell’s game and equally great, giving 3% of every purchase to charities that work with inner city children to become tomorrow’s leaders. What is your must-have item when it comes to fashion and why? A Ted Baker wool funnel neck long-sleeve winter coat. In Arizona, it’s a unique piece that doesn’t get a ton of wear but super versatile dressed up or down. What is the most prized possession in your closet? My Rolex Submariner. It was a wedding gift from my wife Abby and it’s the perfect watch to dress up for work without coming across as self-absorbed and dress down while playing a round of golf.

Attorney Laura Bianchi is just as passionate as she is powerful when it comes to advocating for the development of a responsible cannabis industry. “I approach the ever-changing cannabis industry fiercely, similarly to how I style my outfits,” Bianchi says. With the ability to combine sophisticated, bold, and unique edgy outfits, Bianchi makes a statement through her fashion every day. “I can’t resist over-the-knee boots, paired with jeans or a dress and a classic leather jacket,” Bianchi says. “My nails are always black, which perfectly complement my clunky custom rings.” While her closet is filled with black apparel, Bianchi also incorporates bold jewel tones into her looks. “I will also never say no to an all-white ensemble for summer parties,” she says. Whether sporting capes, high-neck styles, rompers, asymmetrical designs, ripped jeans, or designer stilettos, Bianchi always makes sure her style is a reflection of herself. “There’s nothing wrong with liking the latest trend, but I think trends should be incorporated into your own style so you feel confident and can own it.”

Who influences your style? Victoria Beckham, Jennifer Lopez, and Salma Hayek. Their styles accentuate their personalities flawlessly, in the sense that their clothes portray how fierce and powerful yet beautiful they are. What is your most prized possession? A beautiful, sexy, but sophisticated, black Tom Ford romper. It has a fabulous open back and flowing cape. Some might say it embodies the saying “business in the front, party in back.” How does your career influence your style? As an attorney in the cannabis industry and business owner, I find my style to be a reflection of my personality, which of course is reflected in my career. I thrive in the unknown and love to put all the pieces together, despite the hurdles and complications of our industry. I don’t fit into any one box when it comes to my personal style or in my career, and that’s completely and totally on purpose!

Michael and Nicole Phelps are gearing up for the 50th Annual Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction with a limited-edition Ford Roush Mustang to benefit the Michael Phelps Foundation

BY KAYLOR JONES / PHOTOS COURTESY OF BARRETT-JACKSON

As the most decorated Olympian of all time, all-star swimmer Michael Phelps is an athlete who needs no introduction. This March at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction, a one-of-a-kind Ford Roush Mustang will cross the auction block to benefit the Michael Phelps Foundation (www.michaelphelpsfoundation.org) and its curriculum of water safety, healthy living and goal setting, the same principles that helped propel Phelps to the top. “I didn’t become the swimmer I am by myself,” Michael says. “I had an integral support system of family, coaches and a team to help encourage and challenge me as I realized my dream – to change the sport of swimming.” Two essential members of this support network – his wife, Nicole Phelps, and his long-time coach Bob Bowman – brought

the athlete to the Valley in 2015. After Bowman took a position as the head swimming and diving coach for Arizona State University, the Phelps family followed, and two months later, they learned they were pregnant with their first child, Boomer. “Michael and I had a serious conversation about where we saw ourselves living. We had already fallen in love with Arizona – and made it through the month of August! – so we knew it was home,” Nicole says. “Our favorite part about living in the Scottsdale/Paradise Valley area is the plethora of things to do, not only as adults, but for our three boys. We’re more than happy to call this beautiful state home.” Nicole has an impressive resume of her own. After getting her start in the pageant world at age 17, she won Miss California USA

in 2010 and placed ninth in the Miss USA pageant that same year. She later became an ambassador for the official crown jeweler of Miss California USA, as well as an accredited jewelry professional with the Gemological Institute of America. Addititionally, she graduated with honors from the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. Through all of their pursuits, the couple, who celebrated four years of marriage last October, take turns cheering each other on from the crowd. Nicole even brought a special guest to the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro – 3-month-old Boomer. That year, with his family supporting him from the stands, Michael broke a world record by winning 13 individual Olympic titles. He closed the 2016 Games, and his career as a competitive swimmer, with 28 Olympic medals, 23 of them gold.

A HERO’S JOURNEY Shortly after the 2008 Olympics, Michael got his philanthropic start with the help of the bonus earned from his sponsorship with Speedo. The Michael Phelps Foundation (MPF) is centered on three pillars that he holds dear – healthy lifestyle choices, water safety and the pursuit of dreams. Throughout his career, Michael noticed that inequalities within the global swimming community keep many promising athletes out of the pool. To make his motto, “anything is possible,” that much closer to reality, Phelps invested in the Level Field Fund, launched

36

So Scottsdale! January ‘21

in 2010 in collaboration with fellow Olympic athletes. The swimming-specific fund awards grants to those hampered by a lack of opportunity or resources, making the sport more accessible one athlete at a time. Michael also saw that water safety was not universally available or understood, and that for many, access to the aquatic programming and facilities needed to change that was limited. MPF’s comprehensive IM program – named for Phelps’ signature event, the individual medley – was developed in partnership with KidsHealth (www.kidshealth.org) and Michael Phelps Swimming to address these needs. “The IM program provides social-emotional wellness and goal-setting lessons for children to utilize,” says Michael, who has reached over 100,000 people around the world through MPF’s curriculum, offered through the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Special Olympics International. “I know how challenging times can really impact the mental health of adults, but children are affected by it too. We want to provide them with support to help them understand what they may be experiencing.”

CHAMPIONING CHANGE When they’re not hiking the trails behind their home or spending time with their sons at the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park, the Phelps family can be found making a difference at MPF events. The Foundation’s 10-year anniversary celebration in 2018, which highlighted that Arizona has among the highest drowning mortality rates in the country, is a prime example of how the community can rally in support of the next generation. At the event, Michael led in-water activities alongside the instructor who first taught him how to swim, teaching over 200 children from Maricopa and Yavapai counties how to have fun in the pool while prioritizing their well-being. “It was great to have a passionate group together serving our community,” Michael says. As an MPF ambassador, Nicole, who was previously the director of communications for the digital region of YP, was drawn to the foundation from the start. “Especially after having children, drowning awareness and water safety became top priorities for me, so working with MPF was a perfect fit,” she says. “Our director is kind enough to allow me to be involved in almost everything we’re doing. When I get crazy ideas in the middle of the night, her and Michael are always willing to hear what I have to say.”

After a successful live auction last October, Barrett-Jackson will continue to implement safety protocols at this year’s event, taking place the week of March 22. Guests are required to wear face coverings, maintain physical distance and receive a temperature screening before entering WestWorld of Scottsdale, which will greet gearheads with enhanced on-site sanitation features and new advanced air filtration and treatment technologies. A limited number of general admission tickets will be available for purchase online (www.barrett-jackson.com) in advance.

LOOKING FORWARD Through each of Michael’s endeavors, one idea rings true – “Mental health is just as important as physical health.” In this spirit, MPF expanded its emotional wellness offerings with the IM Healthy program in 2018 after Michael shared his personal struggles with depression and ADHD. Nicole understands how this subject can hit close to home. “I originally wanted to be part of the foundation because of what we stand for,” she says. “As we’ve shifted into mental health, I’ve become even more focused and passionate about our work as a whole.” With support from the funds raised through Barrett-Jackson, the foundation will continue to break the stigma surrounding conversations about mental health by providing over 100,000 social-emotional lessons to children across the country in 2021. “Facilitating change is not a one-person job,” Michael says. “It takes a family, team, network and community to come together and challenge what is by showing what can be. Together, anything really is possible.”

NEW YEAR, NEW GEARS To date, Barrett-Jackson has raised over $127 million for deserving charities. In support of MPF’s initiatives, a 2010 Ford Roush Mustang will cross the auction block at the 50th Annual BarrettJackson Scottsdale Auction this March, with 100% of the hammer price benefiting the foundation. The limited-edition vehicle, the first of only 25 ever produced, was created in collaboration between Sherwin-Williams, Roush and Barrett-Jackson. The car is decked out with a 540-horsepower R2300 Roush supercharged performance V8; a five-speed manual transmission; an extensive front, rear and side body kit; high-performance Cooper RS3 tires; and four-piston front brakes. The interior boasts leather seats – embroidered with the Barrett-Jackson logo – and a customized production nameplate numbered 001. So Scottsdale! January ‘21

Jessica Wenger McPhaul Naked Rebellion

Tell us about Naked Rebellion. It’s luxury lingerie crafted for every woman on Earth. The nude bra is an essential fashion staple in a woman’s closet – a rare item that goes with every look, the foundation of any outfit, and every wardrobe’s fundamental building block. We help women feel acknowledged, comfortable, and confident. Describe your brand in three words. Inclusive, comfortable and rebellious. What is the inspiration behind it? I attended the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising and have been working in film/TV ever since. I started as an assistant costume designer and progressed to costume designer. I am fortunate to have been a part of the House of Cards costume team with an Emmy nomination and back-to-back Costume Designers Guild Award nominations. I got a dream opportunity to assist a multi-Emmy-nominated costume designer on a commercial project and find nude bras for our leading ladies. Fittings began, and in walked a gorgeous group of women – a dance troupe from Africa. I was in awe of them but growing more horrified by selections. The nude bra sold in stores matched me and no one else there. It hit me. We shop in the same stores, but only one in 10 women see themselves there. I knew I could be an ally, a catalyst for good. Cut to 12 years, Naked Rebellion was born. How did you get into design? My grandmothers were seamstresses. The day after I turned 18, I moved to LA for fashion school, and I’ve been creating ever since. What designers do you look up to the most? Frank Lloyd Wright, Gaudi, Klimt, and Fortuny. What has been your greatest achievement? Every morning, I wake up doing what I love and know my boys are watching their mom be passionate. What about your greatest challenge? Balancing the dreamer side and the financial side. It’s a challenge deciding when to create new products and when to delegate cash to another area of the business. What advice would you give to an aspiring designer? If it scares you and excites you, go for it! Sara RaceyBatraville ATHLETEIST

Tell us about ATHLETEIST. Fashion meets fitness. It’s a mixture of retro styles, shapes, and colors for anyone who wants a bit of luxury and athleisure mixed into their everyday lives. Everything is designed by me, fabric sourced by me, and all production is made in the USA (Brooklyn, New York). Describe your brand in three words. Luxury, retro and athleisure. What is the inspiration behind it? I created the brand because there was nothing that represented my style and aesthetic. I was an athlete, loved the fashion of the ’80s and ’90s, I loved working out, and I wanted something I could wear going out as well as wear to the gym that didn’t just “look” like workout clothing. How did you get into design? Since I was a child, I was always sketching designs. As a model in NYC I was fascinated with how the process worked and being a fit model for some of the biggest designers, I had the rare opportunity to listen and take in different aspects of the industry. What designer do you look up to the most? Betsey Johnson. What has been your greatest achievement? My son, Cyrus. What about your greatest challenge? Taking a leap of faith and moving to a new state and expanding the company into an elite training studio and my first brick-and-mortar storefront, right before a pandemic hit. What advice would you give to an aspiring designer? Start with a pen and piece of paper and write down all your ideas! Let them flow with no restrictions. It’s fun! Sage Aubrey Sage Aubrey

Tell us about Sage Aubrey. Iconic handbags designed for iconic women. Sustainably made in Italy, with love. Describe your brand in three words. Iconic, motivational and sustainable. What is the inspiration behind it? As I began looking at stores where women were shopping for luxury bags, I noticed a disturbing trend. These highly curated spaces, in spite of the glam decor and shiny wares, felt intimidating. They foster an inauthentic culture built on airs of exclusion – and the idea of being intimidated into a sale rubbed me the wrong way. I did not want to continue to be part of this jaded story, I wanted to write an entirely new one. This realization fueled a renewed vision for Sage Aubrey. I understood how it felt to experience the disconnect of out-of-touch luxury brands, so I made it my mission to take an uncharted, more personal route with my brand. I want women to feel recognized, respected and rewarded with connection, approachability, and confidence; none of the too cool, too rich or too exclusive vibes. How did you get into design? My mom, sister and I started an accessories business when I was in high school. At 22, I opened my first women’s boutique here in the Valley. After owning stores, I was inspired to get on the other side of the business. I started building, researching, and sampling Sage Aubrey at 27 after reading an article on Rebecca Minkoff — I was like, “If she can do it, I can too.” What designer do you look up to the most? I love how Diane von Furstenberg has inspired women through her designs and language. What has been your greatest achievement? Building a supportive, loving community of iconic women. My #SageSquad are my heroes. What about your greatest challenge? Currently finding ways to scale my business and finance the scale. What advice would you give to an aspiring designer? Get grinding, girlfriend. Learn how to sell (fast!) and just keep going. Relationships are everything. We curate and design quality fashion jewelry that is inspired by those who choose to boldly express their individuality. Describe your brand in three words. Eye-catching yet refined. We place an emphasis on fostering connections with our customers and love to provide our expertise when you need the perfect piece to complete your look. How did you get into design? There was always something about the art of fashion that excited me. Studying fashion in college helped me polish my design sense and discover other industry roles. I was enamored with fashion buying and my buying experience now provides the foundation for TEAL MARKET. What designers do you look up to the most? Growing up I admired Marc Jacobs and loved his unconventional ad campaigns. Now, as a small business owner, I am inspired by emerging artists who work hard to bring their ideas to life. What has been your greatest achievement? Starting my own business and getting my brand into retailers across the country. What about your greatest challenge? Juggling company responsibilities without a large employee base is challenging. I wear a lot of hats to balance the business workload while trying to stay in a creative space. What advice would you give to an aspiring designer? Just start somewhere and don’t get hung up on every little detail. Remember, you can always pivot along the way and narrow or shift your focus. Keep your eyes open and surround yourself with experiences that feed your creativity. Find products online at www.tealmarket.com and at Vita Sana Fitwear.

Allison Cahill works to reach her client’s real estate goals

B

uying or selling a home comes with its own unique set of challenges that often accompanies significant decision making. Having a seasoned realtor like Allison Cahill, Esq. of Allison Cahill & Partners Luxury Properties at Walt Danley Christie’s International Real Estate on your team can ensure the respective needs of each buyer or seller are represented with professionalism and skill. “I provide top of the line services for my clients, including, but not limited to, professional videography, high end professional photography, drone photography and drone video, true virtual reality tours, and staging services at no additional cost,” she says. Most importantly, Cahill caters all of her services to the individual needs of each client. The dedicated team that Cahill has assembled, sets her apart from others in the market. “Be it our photographers, our videographers, our movers, or the fact that I also have a professional staging

business, my clients can rest assured that each home I market looks as pristine as possible,” she shares. Her sound knowledge of the market and a background in corporate law is her secret weapon and knowing the trends within the luxury market is a valuable resource for anyone lucky enough to work with her. “This acute knowledge of how the luxury market operates on a quarterly basis is part of the reason our sales have increased almost 400% in 2020, bucking trends found elsewhere in the Valley’s market,” Cahill reveals. As the luxury market in the Valley continues to be fluid, there are always going to be challenges. It has weathered the pandemic, but that doesn’t mean it’s without its obstacles. Be it the fact that the market is strongly in favor of sellers, a dwindling supply, or rising home prices that don’t align with otherwise stagnant incomes in the area, Cahill’s background and commitment to straightforwardness and problem solving serve as advantages

she can bring to the table to find the most beneficial deal for her clients. “It has become a popular adage to say “the clients always come first” but there is often truth in simplicity, and that quote or variations thereof are what inspire me to keep up my commitments to each and every client that comes my way,” Cahill says. With a podcast in the works, Cahill is thrilled to discuss the changing state of AZ real estate, the barriers that can come with entering the market, and her approaches to negotiating, deal-making, and problem solving. In addition, she has been elected to the Scottsdale Area Association of Realtors Board of Directors for 2021 and 2022 and is involved with the Phoenix Children’s Hospital Leadership Circle a cause near and dear to her heart. Shahe Koulloukian of Mazvo Auto Care Center Guiding You Through the Effects of Pandemic Car Ownership

S

hahe Koulloukian has seen his fair share of changes in the auto industry; after all, he has spent the last 25 years as the owner and operator of Mazvo Auto Care Center. But the pandemic is an unprecedented time, and that includes attitudes toward getting from point A to point B – especially where public versus personal transportation is concerned. “If it’s not safe to breathe anyone else’s air, it’s a lot more sensible to travel in our own sanitized environment,” he says, “as opposed to a possibly-compromised rolling box being used by hundreds of other people a day.” Since opening his shop in 1995, it has been Koulloukian’s fervent mission to educate and empower Mazvo’s customers with basic knowledge about vehicle ownership. But going into 2021, the information he’d like to convey is a little different, albeit just as important: how to stay healthy and safe while driving, and gain valuable peace of mind. “It’s a daily process as we learn

more about the virus and its changes. It’s important to keep up with the latest guidelines on combating its spread,” Koulloukian says. “Every car owner needs to take their limitations and turn them into innovations by empowering themselves with the understanding of the truth.” With a few simple guidelines, he advises, you can ensure the utmost safety of your transportation. First, limit the number of places you drive … and the number of people who drive your car. Know what you’re touching when you fill your tank; keypads and pump handles can be hotbeds for germs, so use contactless pay whenever possible and sanitize your hands immediately afterward. Disinfect your car’s high-touch areas (such as the steering wheel, door handles and buttons) regularly, but make sure you’re using only non-damaging, bleach-free disinfectants; Koulloukian recommends a simple soapand-water solution with a microfiber cloth. Between rides, keep your windows

cracked to ensure plenty of ventilation; a pinky-finger sized space is fine. And lastly, if you must rideshare, take all safety precautions and don’t be afraid to ask if the vehicle has been sanitized before you get in. After such a tumultuous year, the only thing we know for sure is that 2021 is not going to be “business as usual.” But Koulloukian is going to keep his usual business, because even during an unprecedented pandemic, cars need regular attention – and customers need the education, enlightenment, and steady sense of trust they’ve come to rely on throughout Mazvo’s 25-year history, perhaps now more than ever. “For car owners the fear is in the unfamiliar, and the shift in perspective will come from accepting the facts,” Koulloukian says. “Because the parallels of fear can cost you dearly.” Contact Mazvo Auto Car Care Center at 602.248.8711 or mazvo.com, 4610 North 7th Street, Phoenix

r. William Hall, M.D. focuses on what matters most to his patients: uplifting clients and making them feel their best. Infini Cosmetic Associates is a state of the art cosmetic surgery center focused on body contouring that serves patients throughout the Phoenix area. With more than 20 years of practicing in the valley, Dr. Hall and his team have cornered an extremely specialized niche of cosmetic surgery. “We are a very unique cosmetic practice in that we specialize in only liposculpture and fat transfers,” Dr. Hall says. Most plastic and cosmetic surgeons offer a wide array of procedures where we believe that focusing on one procedure allows us to be the experts in our field.” Liposculpture is a highly effective sculpting tool for removing unwanted, stubborn deposits of fat and may be used in many areas of the body including the abdomen, legs, arms, neck, and more. The procedure is popular among valley men and women due to its efficacy in

reshaping body contours and its tiny, nearly imperceptible “poke-hole” incisions. After having children, many women say they can’t exercise and diet their way back to a flatter stomach and smaller love handles. Dr. Hall’s patients range in ages, but all have one thing in common: a desire to shift their body image and feel confident in their skin again. “Pure and simple it is patient satisfaction that motivates me. Although we are not saving lives, we are most certainly changing lives and self-image in a dramatic fashion. It is an honor and a privilege to me when someone chooses me to be their surgeon and facilitate those changes,” he says. Although, diet and exercise can help you stay trim and fit, there are times that, despite your diligent efforts, stubborn pockets of fat remain in certain areas of your body. Dr. Hall understands how to get rid of these fat deposits and helps to achieve a toned, sculpted figure. By injecting the fat cells with a local anesthesia to numb the treatment area, patients

are fully alert during the procedure and completely comfortable. Cosmetic surgery has always been a technique and technology driven surgical discipline. As we enter a new year, the surgeons at Infini Cosmetic Associates are engaging in techniques and technologies to ensure they are staying at the forefront of body sculpting. “We are a very progressive practice,” Dr. Hall says. The importance of staying up-to-date with the latest surgical techniques and current available knowledge is at the forefront of his team’s 2021 plans. With every liposuction procedure Dr. Hall performs, he uniquely tailors his approach to the patient as well as the area of the body he is treating. EVE knows how to SELL SCOTTSDALE!

Taking pride in assisting clients, exceeding expectations

T

here are a variety of reasons Eve Treger is in the top one percent of Arizona real estate agents and ranks in the top 100 realtors in Maricopa County. One is her sales success. Last year Eve sold over 80 homes in Scottsdale alone! A real estate professional for 27 years—22 of those in Arizona—she brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and ‘out of the box’ thinking to every transaction. “Whether clients are first-time sellers or buyers or seasoned ones, I’m at their side from the first phone call until they receive the keys to their new home,” Eve says. Eve is proud to be affiliated with Launch Real Estate, a Scottsdale-based firm that selects its agents by invitation only. Specializing in luxury residential real estate, she was first licensed in South Africa where she grew up, working for her uncle who now owns Lew Geffen/ Sotheby’s in Johannesburg. “He was my mentor, my teacher and he taught me at a young age the thrill of

the deal,” she says. “Real estate is my passion, it’s what keeps me young and alive, and I love meeting new people and turning clients into friends!” As you would imagine, the pandemic definitely impacted the real estate industry, forcing agents to re-think how properties are marketed, homes previewed and sales transacted. Early on, Eve studied the situation and recalibrated accordingly. “When times change you have to re-invent yourself,” she explains. “Before the pandemic, sales were flowing, people were loving life, then fear set in and everyone became scared. That’s when brutal real estate took over, resulting in limited inventory and multiple offers on homes. To secure the deal for my clients—that’s where my reputation, expertise and marketing creativity was key.” Eve knows the value of having a home professionally staged and photographed. Her hands-on approach lets clients know she’s committed 100 percent, and that her well-honed negotiating skills have their

best interests in mind. Her impressive 2020 sales figures certainly illustrate that she knows how to sell Scottsdale. But her success isn’t measured by the numbers. “Yes, I single handedly sold over 80 homes in Scottsdale in 2020,” she comments. “My success, however, is defined by my amazing husband and children. Living in Scottsdale has been a wonderful starting out point for my kids, and our family is so fortunate to have lived here since 1998—I wouldn’t choose to live anywhere else.” So how does Eve see 2021? “I don’t see the market slowing,” she adds. “Scottsdale’s residential market is insulated, which I credit largely to an influx of out-of-state buyers wanting to relocate for the incredible climate and lifestyle. With inventory at an all-time low, I see 2021 as a seller’s market and am absolutely thankful to my clients for all the repeat business and referrals.” Contact Eve Treger at 602.697.7663 or www.evetreger.com, 4167 N. r. Mitchell C. Kaye, MD, FACS offers a “think out of the box” approach to manage medical conditions, combining the excellence of a standard of care practice with options to utilize state-of-the-art regenerative medicine techniques. “While my main practice focus is to ensure that my patients get the best urologic care possible, treating everything from cancer to urinary difficulties, my Natural Restoration practice manages both diseases in my specialty such as sexual dysfunction and chronic pelvic pain as well as more general medical conditions like neuropathy, muscle and joint pain, poor wound healing, and complications of diabetes,” shares Dr. Kaye. As a Urologic Surgeon, President of Scottsdale Urologic Surgeons, and President of Natural Restoration Centers of America, an organization that integrates cutting edge stem cell based therapies into everyday medical practice, Dr. Kaye believes moving forward into the new year,

he continues to ensure that his patients get the best care when they need it. “While getting back to a more “normal life” is on the top of everybody’s list with the pandemic, we have not skipped a beat in our availability for our patients,” he says. A new year brings new expertise and Dr. Kaye is proud to offer more genetic testing to guide treatments. “With a urinary tract infection, we actually monitor for certain genes that would render certain antibiotics ineffective,” he says. “We look for gene abnormalities in cancer, such as the braca gene in prostate cancer that may affect treatment choices.” A first-generation college graduate that worked hard to ensure he took advantage of any opportunity to get the best education possible, Dr. Kaye has achieved his goal of making a difference in people’s lives on a daily basis. “With part time jobs, academic scholarships, and a commitment to our great country’s military, I was able to attend Georgetown University School of Medicine, and go onto receive urologic

surgery specialty training at the prestigious Cleveland Clinic Foundation,” he shares. He believes in the concept of one doctor, two approaches and the openness to combine standard, well researched treatments with the newer regenerative side of medicine is what his patients love. “On numerous occasions I have seen patients that were abandoned by years of traditional care receive relief from their condition by just not giving up and trying an alternative approach,” Dr. Kaye says. Inspired by a father that led by example and instilled integrity and a strong work ethic, Dr. Kaye approaches each day understanding that he has to look in the mirror and answer to himself at the end of the day. “I hope that by my actions, I am providing my three daughters the same inspiration that they will one day look back on as a positive guiding force in their lives,” he says. opening my business now, in Old Town, has never seemed like a better idea!” After working for multiple national companies, Kutac began to see a trend with strong, independent, brilliant and talented women not being encouraged to advance themselves professionally. “I’m setting out to create a business model that truly gives the women on my team ownership in the company. I want to help create more female business leaders and give them an upside as UGlow continues to grow throughout the Valley,” she shares. “2021 holds great opportunity and I believe that it will be a year of success for many businesses. Scottsdale has an amazing local business community and very loyal consumers. Together, we can take the best that 2020 had to offer, and the tenacity that it required to keep it together, and make 2021 truly remarkable.” Contact UGlow Aesthetics at www.uglowaesthetics.com, 602.562.4531, 4205 N. ROXX Vodka - The brand of choice for 2021

A

ngela Nielsen, Founder of Nielsen Spirits debuted ROXX Vodka in Phoenix and Southern California in 2015. With an elegant, newly designed bottle and reinvigorated spirit, locally owned ROXX Vodka produces a dangerously smooth premium vodka. It’s now finding its way back on the shelves of popular restaurants and upscale bars after a 3.5 year trademark litigation with Exxon Mobil over the logo’s double XX’s. It was showcased at the Grammy’s After Party in the Playboy Mansion hosted by Richard Branson. Featured at the Celebrity Ultra Music Festival in Miami and enjoyed in celebrity filled Malibu events. People Magazine even praised this crown jewel as the ultra smooth and versatile vodka. ROXX Vodka lends itself to martinis, craft cocktails or even served straight up on the rocks. Distilled six times using premium, high quality grains, the ROXX secret comes from using four grains where most premium vodkas only use one or two plus utilizing

crystal clean water from Poland’s deepest natural springs and a specialized filtration system. A clean, neutral, silky balanced finish and creamy mouthfeel exhibiting slight nuances of white pepper flower, whole grain bread, lemon cream and brazil nut is what ROXX offers. ROXX is a multi award winner with a rating of 92 and a gold medal winner given by Tastings.com. An entrepreneur since 2001, Nielsen founded a nationwide print marketing company to work with many Fortune 500 companies, a successful publishing company, and was the owner of an award winning design and architecture magazine. Female owned businesses receive just 2.2% of all venture capital. “By digging deep when all odds were against me along with perseverance, hard work and an unwavering dedication to my brand, my focus has always been on creating award winning products,” she says. A self-described perfectionist, Nielsen admits to having an OCD mentality in herself as well as her brand.

“I believe people will continue to buy when the product is exceptional but an unwavering customer service experience and dedication to my employees and patrons is just as important,” she says. Inspired by a handful of mentors along the way, Nielsen credits her father for her drive and success. “He always believed in me and my abilities. His perseverance to succeed was undeniable. He did not have a great childhood so he gave me what he never received unconditional love and self-worth. His life story is incredible and I’m proud to be his daughter,” Nielsen reveals. In 2021, Nielsen shares, “I have a new business partner that most people will recognize. We share common ground on business practices plus they bring their network of connections and capital to brand and market ROXX the way it needs.” ROXX - Enjoy the Difference.TM Contact Angela Nielsen at 602.513.9203 or www.roxxvodka.com; angie@nielsenspirits.com.

Live events are beginning to make a comeback, including Arizona Fine Art Expo. The event will return for its 17th year, running from January 15 to March 28 under the big white tents on the beautiful Sonoran Desert spread at Scottsdale and Jomax roads. Approximately 100 artists from 124 art studios will engage with art fans and serious art collectors, with some artists creating their works right in their booths. “Our artists are from all over the country and we even have one artist from Zimbabwe and another from Israel,”says Judy Long, who, along with her husband Dennis Long and his sister and

brother-in-law Judi and Roger Combs, is a partner of Arizona Fine Art Expo. While perusing pieces, attendees are welcome to chat with the artists, who are happy to give an inside look into their creative lives and works of art. “Our artists love to tell their story of how they got into art, what they do and how they do it,” Judy says. Season passes cost $10 each, and patrons can return to the event as many times as they’d like, and they frequently do thanks to the wide variety of art available, including those made in paint, pencil, charcoal and pastels. Jewelry, etchings and sculptures of wood and stone can also be

expected. In addition to the works of art displayed by artisans, commissioned works of art are also welcomed. “We get to know a lot of our customers and they return each year,” Judy says. “The Expo is also pet-friendly.” This is the first art show that many of the artists have had a chance to participate in since early 2020. The event will follow all Centers for Disease Control recommendations, including a requirement for face masks and social distancing for all patrons and artists in attendance. Artists will receive daily temperature checks and each booth will have hand sanitizer available for patron use.

ARTISTIC EVOLUTION Bela Fidel continuously reinvents her style

BY LYNETTE CARRINGTON

Bela Fidel is a prolific artist who cannot be defined by one particular style. Rather, her artistic evolution from realism to contemporary and other styles in between has been a journey as exciting and colorful as the artist herself. Fidel first started painting on a whim while living in her native Brazil in her mid-30s. “I started to doodle and out of nowhere, I got some paints and little five-by-seven inch canvases. I created some paintings based on abstract shapes, but I didn’t take it seriously for well over 10 years.” Though she didn’t consider herself a serious artist at the time, Fidel took painting classes at an art school while living in Brazil. Soon, visitors at the school began to take notice of her work, often buying a work-in-progress painting right off her easel. As Fidel’s skills continued to grow, so did her passion for her art. “I realized painting kept me centered, and then I had to continue to do it,” she says. “What I paint comes from inside me and does not come from the outside at all.” Much like famed artists Pablo Picasso and Thomas Kaminsky, Fidel’s artistic style has evolved throughout her career. She initially began painting with oils creating landscapes, faces and still life before slowly shifting her focus to surrealism. Fidel worked in that detail-oriented style for many years, creating dreamy paintings with juxtapositions. Her work then evolved to contemporary art before shifting yet again to an abstract style. Even now, she is considering brushing up on representational work, noting that she may not always understand the impetus behind her need to evolve. “Once I started to feel it, I wanted to understand why I need this or feel like doing it,” Fidel says. The artist’s medium has also evolved over the years, first beginning with oils, then moving to encaustic painting utilizing pigments mixed with hot wax, and finally to mixed media. “The natural progression of my career is my favorite thing,” Fidel says. “It’s not contrived. It’s not something I want to do because it’s in fashion or because it’s going to sell or because it’s popular.” Her art now exists in two distinct directions that satisfy her need to create. She paints in oil one way and in mixed media in another. “Somebody advised me I had to choose between the two, but I ask, ‘Why? Why can’t I be diverse?’ I want to do what makes me happy.” For more information, visit www.fidelabstractoils.com

STAIRCASE TO HEAVEN Benjamin’s Upstairs is an elevated experience, quite literally

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

In 2016 while Benjamin Graham was the sous chef of Citizen Public House, he put his dream of a small, chef-driven concept out into the world during an interview for a local newspaper. He spoke of an intimate atmosphere with an open kitchen where learning was encouraged and an adventurous tasting menu changed regularly. Fast-forward to 2020, and Graham’s dream restaurant has become a reality. In addition to his position as the executive chef of Citizen Public House, Graham is also at the helm of newly opened Benjamin’s Upstairs, a 1,000-square-foot speakeasy style restaurant that seats a maximum of 18 guests. Perched above Citizen Public House and only accessible from a staircase inside of the main restaurant, the concept-within-a-concept is decorated in elegant deco styling with vintage accents, creating elements of comfort and romantic escapism. The dimly lit room is both moody and exciting, showcasing an open microkitchen and raw bar. The menu features just eight items, notably Benjamin’s Fried Chicken ($26), which features extra-crispy, extra-juicy chicken served with mashed potatoes,

collard greens and a maple bourbon honey that Graham became known for at Citizen in years past; white anchovies with speck ($14) served with chive and dill creme fraiche, mustard, pickled red onion and crostini; prickly pear scallop ceviche ($24) with lotus chips, avocado, onion, garlic, lime, cilantro and corn; and fresh raw oysters (market price) with a house fish sauce vinaigrette, mignonette, hot sauce and lemon. In addition to classic cocktails – including options such as a Manhattan ($14), daiquiri ($13) and French 75 ($15) – the beverage program offers a rotating selection of petillant-naturel wines by the glass and bottle. Roughly French for “naturally sparkling,” petillant-naturel wines are made using an ancient winemaking technique that involves bottling wine that is still fermenting to trap carbon dioxide gas in the bottle, creating a gentle carbonation. It is, as it sounds, a natural take on creating a sparkling wine. There are also similarly styled still wines, ales and ciders available. Beyond the standard food and drink offerings, Benjamin’s also has a monthly collaborative pop-up dinner series called “Upstairs with…” and events are announced every couple of weeks on the eatery’s social media platforms. Most often taking place the first or second Tuesday of each month, Graham partners with a fellow chef to create a six-course menu with wine pairings, or he partners with a local winemaker or other beverage artisan and creates a six-course menu to pair with their best vintages and bottles. Each of these dinners is $100 per person inclusive of tax. Benjamin’s Upstairs is open Tuesday to Thursday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Reservations, strictly available online, are strongly recommended and can be made up to 14 days in advance. Permanent Make-up

& BEYOND Microblading

BEYOND MICROBLADING As a permanent make up technician and trainer for nearly 30 years I’ve seen many trends come and go. These days one of the first things I hear from people inquiring about services is “I don’t want tattooed eyebrows. I want the soft powdery look that you did for my friend.” This is when I educate the public on the truth about permanent make up and the truth is it’s all tattoo. Years ago when permanent make up was just a fledgling industry in this country many of us worked in the offices of plastic surgeons. We called the procedure micro pigment implantation. Then different techniques were marketed using trade words like soft tap, and recently microblading has been all the rage. Known as the “queen of conservative” My specialty is custom blending colors for each person. Shape, color, technique and science are what create the artistry for beautifully natural eyebrows. Eyelash enhancements. Due to the lockdown most people have lost their eyelash extensions. This is the perfect time to touch up permanent eyeliner before reapplying lashes. I love to create a rich smokey looking lash line rather than a harsh eyeliner look. Safety first. Due to the intimate nature of these procedures safety has always been at the very top of the list. Hospital grade disinfectants are used on surfaces between clients and most importantly all instruments are new, sterile and disposable. Yea! With your safety in mind I will be wearing a mask through your procedure and if you like I will happily provide you with one as well. Because my studio is completely private you need not worry about ever encountering a crowded salon environment.

2022 MASERATI MC20 The pure quintessence of an Italian supercar is available for preorder BY JIM PRUETER

VITAL STATS 2022 Maserati MC20 Base price: $210,000 Engine: 3.0-L V-6

Over the years, there’s been a ridiculous number of car songs — from dusty old favorites like Wilson Pickett’s Mustang Sally to Fun, Fun, Fun by The Beach Boys. Then there are songs about Pontiac GTOs, Hot Rod Lincolns, and Cadillacs. But most improbable are the songs about the glories of a Maserati. There’s Old Town Road by Billy Ray Cyrus with Lil Nas X and Rod Stewart’s Italian Girls, both featuring lines about the luxury car brand. Perhaps best known is Joe Walsh’s Life’s Been Good. Gushing lyrics aside, the truth is, Maserati has never aspired to the promise of pure, concentrated essence of Italian motoring in the same mise-en-scene — translating to “place on stage” in French — as Ferrari and Lamborghini. But, for the first time, the Trident (the company’s famous logo) is taking aim at Italian superstars with an all-new 630-horsepower mid-engine supercar of its own: the 2022 Maserati MC20, which is available to order now with expected delivery in October 2021.

96

So Scottsdale! January ‘21

Under the rear hatch of the mid-engine MC20 is an all-new 90-degree twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission, capable of launching the rearwheel drive MC30 from 0 to 62 mph in under 2.9 seconds, with a top speed of 202 mph. The MC20 is available as either a coupe or convertible with stunning carbon-fiber monocoque design. Butterfly doors give access to the roomy, clean and uncomplicated two-seat interior, which has ample leg and headroom for those above 6 foot, according to 6-foot-6-inch design chief Klaus Busse. A pre-production version of the Maserati MC20 has been touring around the country, recently making stop in Scottsdale for perspective buyers to preview. The car starts at $210,000 and is available in six exterior and eight interior color combinations. Optional packages include a full exterior and/or exterior carbon fiber package and premium sound system.

DIVINITY IN THE DESERT Camp Sarika by Amangiri offers a spiritual sojourn and respite from all things regular

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY AMANGIRI

Amangiri, located in southern Utah less than 30 minutes from Page in Northern Arizona, is more than an experiential resort; it is a mystical world unto itself. Spaced over 600 acres of protected land in the Colorado Plateau and surrounded by five national parks, including Zion, Grand Canyon and Bryce Canyon, the Forbes Four-Star Award-winning Amangiri has been giving guests the opportunity to connect with the raw beauty of the Southwest while still enjoying the ultimate in creature comforts for more than 10 years. In celebration of its decade milestone, Amangiri has now outdone even itself with Camp Sarika, launched last year. Just a five-minute drive or 30-minute hike from the main resort, this new luxury encampment within Amangiri features just 10 tented pavilions, offering a remote sanctuary with privacy, escapism and adventure as well as all of Amangiri’s luxe amenities, notably its full-service spa, spa suites, restaurant, sun deck, swimming pool and Jacuzzi. Adventures range from exploring cliff dwellings and canyoneering to horseback riding and paddle boarding.

98

So Scottsdale! January ‘21

Deriving its name from the Sanskrit word for “open space” and “sky,” Sarika enables a back-to-nature wilderness experience in supreme comfort, revealing Utah’s otherworldly landscapes and intriguing aspects of Native American culture at every turn. This ideal is reflected in the camp’s minimalist design, letting its surroundings take center stage. Claiming unobstructed views of the mesas, the camp’s spacious tented pavilions – which are spaced out to ensure undisturbed privacy – feature either one or two bedrooms, as well as a living area, a dining area, a bar, and a private terrace with a fire pit and a heated plunge pool. The interiors include soft decorative canvas ceilings, and wooden fittings as well as custom-designed walnut and leather furniture and etched timber headboards that echo the camp’s carved surroundings. Like Amangiri, all meals served to guests at Sarika are responsibly sourced with a focus on Southwestern Native American cuisine. The restaurant’s menu changes daily, incorporating the freshest local produce while also catering to vegetarians and vegans. Both guest rooms and outdoor locations can be used for memorable private dining experiences. Beyond the more traditional offerings and amenities while staying, Sarika features daily yoga sessions amid the grand landscape; Native American-inspired healing and wellness treatments; and private tours by plane, helicopter or hot air balloon. Sarika also enables a deeper immersion in Native American culture, with storytelling and stargazing around the fire every evening, and bringing guests up close and personal with the region’s history with staff-led explorations into the slot canyons to study the 6,000-year-old petroglyphs in Broken Arrow Cave. With lakefront and mountain views, this 4,734-square-foot Scottsdale dwelling embodies real estate’s famous mantra, “Location, location, location.” It sits in the exclusive McCormick Ranch guard gated community of Las Palomas and has four bedrooms and three bathrooms. A wood and cast-iron arched garden gate opens to a courtyard containing a custom pergola with an outdoor kitchen, barbecue and smoker, and seating area perfect for alfresco dining. The entryway leads to a welcoming dining room. A few steps away is the living room, which is characterized by wood flooring, high ceilings, a built-in entertainment center, and floor-to-ceiling windows. Modern lines and neutral colors are seen throughout the home. The kitchen, however, mixes materials in a way that can only be described as edgy. These include wood cabinets, red granite and black crocodile quartz countertops, silver hardware, and a light-colored stone backsplash. The sleek space is completed with luxury stainless steel appliances. Around the corner from the kitchen is the butler’s pantry, which houses extra appliances, countertop space and storage. The bedrooms offer plenty of natural light as well as custom closets. Two of the bedrooms, one of which is the master, have extensive balconies. Another room features an infrared sauna, making it an idyllic space for an at-home gym. Also upstairs is a second washer and dryer (the first set is in the butler’s pantry). The master suite features a textured statement wall and Frosted French doors open to the tranquil master bathroom. An impressive sauna shower stands in the middle of the room, with the vanities on either side. An elegant chandelier hangs above an alluring freestanding bathtub. Out back, Arizona’s natural beauty is the immediate backdrop to an open patio made entirely of stone. An antique iron fence wraps around the patio, with a gate granting access to the lake. 8357 E. ESCAPE TO THE CAPE Dive into Baja California Sur’s serene, swimmable, sophisticated side

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

PHOTOS COURTESY OF EAST CAPE EXPLORERS

To many, Los Cabos, in particular tourism mecca Cabo San Lucas, needs no introduction. The region straddles the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortez and is known for its all-inclusive resorts, whale watching and famed sea arch. But this adventure is about another part of Cabo known as the East Cape. A simple left turn out of the Los Cabos International Airport versus the usual right toward Cabo San Lucas is all it takes to begin a wholly new adventure in Mexico’s Baja California Sur. Located solely on the Sea of Cortez, the East Cape features landscape – varying from rugged deserts and towering mountains to tranquil waterfalls and lush greenery – nearly untouched by man. A bonus: Its stunningly beautiful white sand beaches are swimmable, a novelty to those who’ve oft-visited Cabo where the undertow does not allow for direct access safely. The East Cape also has several of its own marinas, so everything from scuba diving to yachting to sport fishing is at one’s fingertips.

Sea Life Adventures Now through mid-April marks one of the most popular times to visit the region as it is whale watching season. Each winter, gray whales, humpbacks, sperm whales and orcas make their way to Baja California Sur to escape the frigid cold of northern waters. They visit each year like clockwork, choosing the region as a mating ground and safe place to bring newborn calves. From time to time, there are even sightings of blue whales, which, despite being the largest animals in the world, are often elusive. During any group or private tour, which can be booked through any resort concierge or direct through East Cape Explorers, also expect to see seals, fish and dolphins. If seeking to explore the underwater world in a different way, East Cape Explorers also offers shark diving excursions. During this daring adventure, dive sites feature copious amounts of jacks, mackerels, tunas and snappers, large groupers and several species of rays. This sea life, in turn, brings in predatory sharks including hammerhead and silky sharks. For animal lovers wishing to hold off on travel a bit longer – and for those who wish to steer clear of sharks – there is also the option to visit in the late summer or throughout the fall to take advantage of turtle season, which takes place from late August to early December annually. During this time, hawksbill, loggerhead, leatherback, green and olive ridley sea turtles swim to the shores of the East Cape’s Baja Peninsula to build nests in the sand and lay their eggs. After about 45 days, the eggs hatch and thousands

102

So Scottsdale! January ‘21

of baby turtles begin taking their first steps, ultimately trying to make it to their ocean home. The only marine mammal to do this, the resorts on the East Cape protect the eggs before they hatch and offer programs for individuals and groups to safely interact, preserve and assist these hatchlings in getting from sand to surf.

Exploring on Land Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas is among the resorts that host the turtle program – and dozens of others including hiking, biking, snorkeling, horseback riding, waterfall tours, ATV tours, private yachting experiences, and sport fishing adventures. Opened in 2019, the open-air, modern, sleek resort is luxurious even by Four Seasons’ lofty standards. Set along 2 miles of private white sand beach, the resort features its own marina (the only Four Seasons in world that can make that claim); six sparkling pools; five restaurants and lounges; an adventure concierge team; and the Oasis Spa and Wellness Center, a stunning venue notable for using indigenous products and rituals in several treatments. Of the total 141 modern rooms and suites on property, many of them boast private plunge pools or outdoor showers, and all offer ample indoor-outdoor living and lounging space. The vast Costa Palmas community surrounding the resort includes 18 acres of organic farms and orchards that provide much of the produce and herbs served on property. Culinary options at the resort include Casa de Brasa, a Baja-inspired brasserie; El Puesto, for sea-to-table ceviche, tiraditos and crudo; Limón, an alfresco farm-to-table dinner restaurant; and Ginger’s, an all-day eclectic cafe. The resort is also home to estiatorio Milos, an acclaimed Mediterranean seafood restaurant with additional locations in New York, London and Miami. An extensive collection of local tequilas and mezcals are available resort-wide, as is an impressive list of regional wines from Baja Mexico, the oldest wine-producing nation in the Americas. Currently, both Southwest Airlines and American Airlines offer daily, nonstop flights to the Los Cabos International Airport. In addition, Set Jet, a private jet charter flight program, recently launched nonstop service from Scottsdale to Los Cabos, and in late 2020 Four Seasons announced a partnership with NetJets to bring guests to the East Cape in style. The newly launched nonstop flight includes an in-flight tasting of Costa Palmas' exclusive tequila blend, CP73; Four Seasons slippers for all passengers; and a Four Seasons escort from customs, which includes private transportation to the resort.

THE BEE’S KNEES

Wild Tonic Hard Jun Kombucha harnesses the sweet, smooth, sanative properties of honey

Many artists wax poetic, but painter Holly Lyman is far more literal. For a number of years, the longtime Northern Arizona resident worked in encaustic art, a style of painting where one uses hot wax. Lyman’s wax of choice: heated beeswax. As she began to work in the medium more regularly, she became impassioned by all that bees do for the world beyond contributing to her art as the pollination from honey bees in the United States contributes to more than 150 crops, including those that grow coffee, chocolate, watermelon, and avocado. Lyman began studying the decline of the bee population and ways to advocate for it, which led to her creating a honey-based kombucha called Jun in the 2010s. “Traditional kombucha is a fermented tea drink made with processed cane sugar and a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY) that bursts with amino acids, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and enzymes. It, however, often has a somewhat sour flavor profile,” Lyman says. “My recipe still uses the tea and SCOBY, as well as natural herbs, fruit and botanicals, but substituting the sugar for organic honey gives it a more palate-pleasing, refreshing effervescence.” By 2015, with that recipe as the base and honey as her not-sosecret ingredient, Wild Tonic was born in Cottonwood and quickly earned national distribution. Today, there are three variations of the brand including a nonalcoholic line as well as two spirited takes – Wild Tonic Hard Jun Kombucha 5.6% ABV and Wild Tonic Hard Jun Kombucha 7.6% ABV Reserve. Wild Tonic 5.6% ABV is currently available in seven flavors: Raspberry Goji Rose; Blueberry Basil; Mango Ginger; Strawberry Blood Orange; Blackberry Mint; Tropical Turmeric; and Hoppy Buzz, which is dry hopped to create a delicate fruitiness and give citrus-forward notes. The Wild Tonic Hard Jun Kombucha 7.6% ABV Reserve is available in two varieties: Dancing Naked, which features jammy notes of zinfandel; and Wild Love, a delectable combination of luscious blackberry and elegant lavender. Each serving of any Wild Tonic product contains more than a billion probiotics and prebiotics. In addition, there is no gluten, added sulfites or artificial flavorings in any of the lines. “Prebiotics are a type of dietary fiber. You could think of them as a sort of fertilizer for the good bacteria in your gut, more or less feeding the probiotics so they can do their job helping keep you healthy,” Lyman says. “We also grow many of our own organic herbs, cultivate ginger plants and grow our own grapes to use in recipes right here in Arizona.” Currently, Wild Tonic is available in 45 states at natural health food stores, major retail chains and exclusive restaurants and resorts including Four Seasons, Emeril Lagasse’s family of restaurants and Canyon Ranch. Locally, it is available at Sprouts, Safeway and Whole Foods as well as on the brand’s website (www.wildtonic. com) for shipping or local delivery and on Instacart, Amazon, Favor, Postmates, Uber Eats, and the Holiday Wine Cellar.

Canopy by Hilton Scottsdale Old Town’s Cobre Kitchen + Cocktails is an American brasserie inspired by the Southwest. Its Tepary Bean Hummus ($9) shines a light on the white tepary bean, which is a nutty legume with a long history among the Indigenous people of the Sonoran Desert. After the locally sourced white beans are cooked, drained and chilled, the chef puts them in a food processor with tahini sesame paste, garlic, lemon juice, ground cumin, kosher salt, and black peppercorns. The mixture is finished with some water and olive oil to achieve the perfect texture. The resulting rich, creamy hummus is garnished with olive oil and a furikake spice blend infused with Mexican spices, served alongside seasonal vegetables and fresh grilled sourdough bread. Weft & Warp’s Smoking Banana Gun hits the bullseye when it comes to winter flavors

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

The cocktail program at Weft & Warp Art Bar + Kitchen at Andaz Scottsdale Resort & Bungalows is truly a group effort. “Our entire menu, which changes seasonally, is developed in-house by our bartending staff,” says Chris Owings, the Andaz Scottsdale operations manager for food and beverage. “Our thought is if we give our team the freedom to be creative, they will exceed expectations every single time, and they do.” Among the winter standout cocktails is The Smoking Banana Gun ($16). “This was the brainchild of Javier Urias, a veteran bartender with 15 years of experience and our resident encyclopedia of spirit knowledge,” Owings says. It starts with Bulleit Rye, known for its spice and complexity, and Giffard Banane du Bresil, a delicate, sweet, aromatic liqueur made from bananas and a touch of cognac. The build also includes Disaronno Originale, a warming amaretto liqueur that plays up the rye’s spice notes. “We also add in a few drops of Peychaud's Bitters to balance the sweetness from the banana,” Owings says. Once shaken with ice, before the cocktail is strained into a snifter, the glass is sprayed with absinthe to enhance the sensory side of the experience. “We then take the snifter and put it over applewood chips that we’ve smoked, allowing the smoke to collect in the glass so it wafts out as we pour in the cocktail and during the first few sips,” Owings says. The resulting cocktail tastes smoky and spirit forward, with a kick of rich sweetness and bitter citrus. Weft & Warp Art Bar + Kitchen, 6114 N. CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Jesh Mascaro of Local Bistro

As the executive chef of Local Bistro, Jesh Mascaro crafts seasonal menus of rustic Italian food, including handmade pastas, wood-fired pizzas, fresh seafood, hand-picked steaks, and crisp salads in a contemporary setting.

Jesh, what a unique name! My full name is Jeshjen, which is pronounced Jezz-inn. Many expect some cultural significance, but my mom was a bit of a hippy and just made it up. But I’ve been Jesh to everyone as long as I can remember. It’s been a time of change at Local Bistro – can you share a little bit about that? We closed down this summer to revamp the interior and the menu at the same time. Among our biggest changes: importing a pasta machine from Italy, augmenting our pizza dough recipes, and reconfiguring our brick oven to enhance flavors. Did you always know you would be a chef? I grew up in a predominantly Italian household in Long Island. My grandma taught me how to make sauce at 5 years old and my grandpa had clam boats so I was catching and cooking clams, lobster and crab from a young age. While cooking came naturally, my first dream was to be a dinosaur hunter, and then turned to art. How did you transition to cooking? I studied art at the Pratt Institute in the mid1990s. My passion was in more tactile arts, but at the time everyone pushed you into digital, which was not for me. While cooking for my younger sister, she told me I should just be a chef. From the mouths of babes, she got me thinking I should and could. What was your big break? I’ve had a few. One was earning a position at Gansevoort 69 under executive chef Jacqueline Lombard of Top Chef fame. I worked my way up there for many years, eventually earning the sous position in 2010. That marked a wild time of growth for me professionally and an even wilder time personally. Do tell. Gansevoort hosted everything from Broadway wrap parties to private celebrity affairs. I’ve done everything from playing Jenga in the restaurant with Kiefer Sutherland to drinking tea with Jodie Foster. Local Bistro, 20581 N. OODLES OF NOODLES A sampling of perfect pasta dishes across the Valley

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

Strozzaprete ai Broccoli di Rape

Marcellino Ristorante Strozzaprete, one of southern Italy’s most popular pastas, is an elongated form of cavatelli and made fresh by hand daily at Marcellino. Once rolled, the chunky red and white pasta is sauteed with savory broccoli di rape in olive oil with a touch of white wine, garlic and red pepper flakes. The dish is also available with spiced tomato sauce upon request. $24. www.marcellinoristorante.com.

Lemon Seafood Pasta

T. Cook’s at Royal Palms Resort and Spa The dish features a base of pasta topped with an assortment of fresh shrimp, Salt River mussels and clams sauteed in a fragrant blend of garlic, thyme and chili flakes. Heirloom tomatoes, lemon juice, cream and a splash of white wine round it all out, but it’s the side of grilled, garlic-infused Noble Bread — perfect for dipping — that really completes the plate. $22. www.royalpalmshotel.com.

Spinach & Ricotta Ravioli

Fellow Osteria The mighty pasta pouch – aka the ravioli – is the star of this dish, especially after it has been stuffed with spinach and ricotta. To juxtapose the soft textures and light flavors inside the ravioli, a dizzyingly delicious combination of sage, Parmesan cheese and decadent brown butter as well as seasonal roasted vegetables and pine nuts add an additional depth of flavor to complete the dish. $14. www.fellowosteria.com.

Bourbon Street Rigatoni

While delicious in their own right, noodles serve as a blank canvas for chefs to craft any carb-centric creation they dream up. Thanks to countless sauces and ingredients, the pasta-bilities are truly endless! Whether unique or classic, hearty or light, baked or fresh out of the pan, you can’t go wrong with one of these tasty takes this winter.

Wally’s American Gastropub What do you get when you mix chipotle cream, chicken, andouille sausage, bell peppers, and sun-dried tomatoes? This Creole-inspired take on the Italian classic transports diners to the famed New Orleans street after which it is named. Creamy, saucy and savory, expect a kick of Southern spice dancing on the palate after every bite. $15. www.wallysgastropub.com.

Ricotta Agnolotti

Maple & Ash Nicknamed “pillows of love,” these hand-rolled, ricotta-filled treats are light and airy, yet still rich, thanks to the sauce which is made with copious amounts of butter, winter truffles, trumpet mushrooms, and a hint of lemon. The presentation is as impressive as the flavor, as the entire pan of melt in your mouth agnolotti is served tableside while still simmering in the buttery sauce. $26. www.mapleandash.com.

little ear – is a good balance of healthy and indulgent. It is also a highly customizable option as diners can add chicken, shrimp or salmon to the dish. $19 (additional charge for protein). www.gabriellasscottsdale.com.

Rosso Creste Di Gallo

Fat Ox Handcrafted daily, this is a refined twist on the classic Italian pasta named for its resemblance to a rooster’s crown, or crest. Featuring red wine, dandelion greens, duck sausage, mushrooms and huckleberry, it combines the delicate flavors of France with the traditional northern Italian pasta for an elegant yet toothsome dish that’s been the star of Fat Ox’s menu since it opened. $18. www.ilovefatox.com.

Cast Iron Macaroni and Cheese

Linguine with Clams Sauce

Tomaso’s The word linguine means “little tongues” in Italian. The name is especially fitting for Tomaso’s garlicky take on the popular pasta, as it will have tongues wagging and mouths watering. Here, the handmade linguini is paired with littleneck clams and a sauce made with fresh garlic, shallots, parsley, dry pinot grigio, butter, lemon juice, red pepper flakes, and extra virgin olive oil. A layer of panko breadcrumbs tops the dish, adding a tasty crunch to every bite. $25. www.tomasos.com.

PHX Beer Co. Ooey, gooey and good to the last bite, this grown-up take on traditional macaroni and cheese starts with cavatappi macaroni and a generous amount of both smoked mozzarella and cheddar. While the flavors blend, hatch green chiles and PHX Beer Co.’s own Arizona Gold beer are added to the mix. The entire dish is scooped into a cast-iron skillet, topped with pretzel bite crumbles and baked until the cheese bubbles. $11 or $14 with bacon. www.phxbeerco.com.

Spaghetti & Meatballs

Cold Beers & Pizza What, did you think this list wouldn’t include a good old spaghetti and meatballs? As if! This tried-and-true traditional take on what is arguably the most popular pasta dish is big enough to share and keeps it simple by design, right down to the oven-fresh garlic bread on the side for dipping. $12. www.coldbeerspizza.com.

Uni Bucatini

Francine Restaurant This luscious dish starts with Phoenix-based Sonoran Pasta Co.’s bucatini, which is made with durum wheat. Once lightly cooked, it is bathed in uni – or sea urchin roe – as well as lemon, butter and Aleppo pepper. The plate of pasta is topped with applewood-smoked trout roe, a house cured Two Wash Ranch red pepper egg yolk, fresh basil, and a final garnish of uni. $36. www.fancinerestaurant.com.

Neapolitan Short Rib Cannelloni The Sicilian Butcher Complex and indulgent, this Italian dish is composed of fresh pasta sheets that have been rolled with ricotta; mozzarella; and short rib ragu, made with tomato sauce and a stew of tender pork, beef and sausage. The stuffed tubular pasta is then topped with bechamel cream sauce and baked to perfection. $21. www.thesicilianbutcher.com.
