Fine hair has plenty of benefits. It’s quick to dry and style, doesn’t shed as much as thicker hair and looks stunning when bobbed. However, fine hair is also more prone to breakage. That’s why Rodney Gentry at Sachi Studios advises paying particular attention to your hair care routine when you have fine hair. “With fine hair, the strands have a smaller diameter, which means they are more vulnerable to damage. As such, it’s important to care for your hair the right way. Avoid any unnecessary heat treatments and go easy on the amount of product you use, as you’ll simply weight the hair down.” There are plenty of ways in which those with fine hair can add volume. Dry shampoo can work wonders, as can volumizing powder. Curling the hair without heat – by using a curling donut, for example – can also deliver impressive results. It’s important to use shampoos, conditioners and hair masques designed specifically for fine hair, according to Rodney Gentry. “Using products that have been made with fine hair in mind should maximize protection for your hair while also not weighing it down. This becomes even more important when coloring the hair, as coloring can make the hair dryer and thus more prone to breakage.” Rodney Gentry advises using heat protector spray religiously before blow-drying or curling, while also minimizing washing to preserve the intensity of the color for as long as possible. Dry shampoo is a double win in this respect, as it keeps roots from becoming too oily between washes while also adding volume. Fine hair can look incredible when colored and styled professionally. ZEUS: A WARRIOR DOG

How Melissa Rupoli-Katz’s rescue Lab inspired a nonprofit that financially supports dogs with cancer

Dog people are a breed of their own. They’re quick to greet any pooch (and owner) they see out on a walk and learn all there is to know about that said pooch. They welcome slobbery dog kisses (even on the face), and their Instagram feed is typically all things dogs. Being a dog person is more than a fact for some

people—it’s a personality trait. For Melissa Rupoli-Katz, this couldn’t be truer, as she says, “Life to me is not living if I do not have a dog in it.” Her affinity for dogs began as a child growing up in Toronto, Canada, with Snuffy, her family’s pet. Rupoli-Katz continued to

befriend other furry companions throughout her life. Since moving to Paradise Valley in 2005, she and her husband, Peter Katz, have welcomed dogs into their home, too, including Koko and, for nearly nine years now, Zeus. The couple adopted Zeus, originally named Gus, from Desert Labrador Retriever Rescue (DLRR), a volunteer-operated nonprofit that finds loving, lifelong homes for displaced Labrador retrievers. Zeus was severely abused before landing in the nonprofit’s shelter. On adoption day, Rupoli-Katz recalls him being in bad shape, saying, “Zeus did not trust anyone, disliked riding in the car and was very skittish and shaky. It took him three to four months to feel comfortable and trust us.” From skeptical to playful, Zeus performed a complete 180-degree turn since moving in with Rupoli-Katz and her husband. “He is the perfect dog; he is a mama’s boy and loves everyone he meets,” says Rupoli-Katz. Zeus is well-traveled now, too, despite still not loving car rides (though, he manages much better now). He’s been to Flagstaff, Telluride, Colorado, Malibu, California and Toronto with his parents on family vacations. In 2017, Rupoli-Katz received gut-wrenching news. Zeus, who was around age six, was diagnosed with anal sac adenocarcinoma, an aggressive form of cancer. Fortunately, it was

caught early enough to treat. Rupoli-Katz was also financially able to schedule her dog’s surgery and scans immediately, which exceeded $4,000. The rollercoaster of a ride experience got her thinking one day while driving Zeus to his post-op appointment. “Zeus had done well and was cancer-free, but I wanted to help other dogs, their families and rescue organizations going through similar odds. After researching canine cancer, I found that there was not a lot of financial assistance available. And so began the Zeus Oncology Fund,” she says. In 2018, Rupoli-Katz began raising funds for DLRR and treating dogs with cancer within the shelter first. But she wanted to extend her helping hand to dogs beyond the state’s border. She patented Zeus Oncology Fund (ZOF) and applied for a 501(c)(3) nonprofit status with the help of her attorney friend. In December of 2019, ZOF became an official nonprofit. RupoliKatz says, “It was the best Christmas present because I knew we were going to make a difference in so many lives.” Committed to financially assisting rescue dogs with cancer treatment through grants, ZOF has helped 85 rescue dogs across 27 states. Five dogs are currently in treatment or scheduled for upcoming surgery. Rupoli-Katz wears most hats within ZOF, like most startup founders do. She is joined by her husband, Peter Katz, who raises awareness and funds for the nonprofit, and her secretary, who assists with administrative details. A small but mighty team, indeed. Beyond financially assisting families and their pets, ZOF is a community of support. Rupoli-Katz keeps the nonprofit’s Instagram account (@zeusoncologyfund) updated with information about new grant recipients and post-op updates. “Once you are a part of our organization, you are ZOF family for life. We experience the highs and lows of your dog’s journey together. It can be really difficult sometimes, but our small community of cancer dog families support one another during the entire progress,” she says. As for Zeus, he continues to push forward flawlessly. More recently, he had a suspicious growth removed that pathology concluded was melanoma. Since this second surgery, he’s doing well and remains cancer-free. “We truly live in a place of gratitude every day with Zeus because he really beat the odds and continues to thrive in his senior years. He is true to his namesake in that way—a warrior,” Rupoli-Katz says. In addition to ZOF, Rupoli-Katz is an active member within the Valley for dog- and human-related causes. She’s been a DLRR volunteer since 2013 and served as the board of directors’ president in 2019. Over the years, she has also proudly supported The Arizona Humane Society, 2nd Chance Dog Rescue, Paint For A Cure, Parkinson’s Foundation and Amanda Hope Rainbow Angels. “It has always been important for me to serve my community,” she says. “The impact you can make when you have a cause you are passionate about is life-changing for both you and the charity you serve.” To learn more about Zeus Oncology Fund, visit www.zeusoncologyfund.org.

Decorated equestrian Sarah Esqueda’s love for horses knows no bounds

At only 24, Sarah Esqueda has earned a slew of victories that any accomplished equestrian would be envious of. She just won her 40th national title. In 2016, Esqueda won 12 national championships during her last year showing at Youth Nationals. Esqueda’s love of horses stemmed from a special gift from her grandparents, a Shetland pony named Kokomo. Today she breeds, trains and shows Arabians with Highland Pride Arabians and is part of the Arabian Horse Association of Arizona, a nonprofit that hosts the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show. With a deep and seemingly primal love for horses, Esqueda’s life has always been centered around equestrian sport. She has been riding Arabian horses since she was six years old. Arabians are her favorite to ride. “Arabians’ wide-set eyes, dished face, large nostrils, broad chest and high tail carriage are a few of the standout characteristics that make them recognizable from other breeds,” Esqueda says. “They are also known for their versatility and being people-oriented, making them excellent horses for children and adults.” Since 1955, the annual Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show has set the tone in the Arabian horse world. It’s the largest Arabian horse show in the world. The show has grown from 50 horses to nearly 2,400. Top owners, trainers and breeders from around the globe fly in. In 2022, Esqueda will be showing at the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show, a couple of regional shows and at the U.S Nationals in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She currently has one foal that will be born in March and plans on breeding more horses in 2022. Like riding, Esqueda’s passion for Scottsdale runs deep. Growing up in Whittier, California, Esqueda frequented Scottsdale to compete and fell in love with the city the first time she visited. “It felt like home to me at such a young age,” she says. “One week after graduating high school I was living here in an apartment with my dog to be closer to my horses.”

Restaurant owner Nico Doniele Scegiel specializes in the mind and gut connection

After Nico Doniele Scegiel found that eating healthier foods seemed to help her various health ailments, she decided she wanted to share her knowledge with the world. So she opened organic restaurant Santé in North Scottsdale. Via her restaurant, she seeks to guide others looking to achieve less stress and anxiety through diet, nutrition and mindfulness. Here’s how she got here: Scegiel was surrounded by food throughout her childhood thanks to her mother—an award-winning executive chef who instilled a love for food and cooking in her. “My passion for the food industry stuck with me as I grew up,” she says. “But I struggled with depression and crippling anxiety and was put on antidepressants.” She entered the professional world as a hairstylist. While living in Paris and Milan, Italy, Scegiel turned to alcohol and excessive caffeine—a mainstay of her industry—to self-medicate. “I was a mess, and it pushed me into a destructive, vicious cycle resulting in horrible digestion issues,” she says. After years in and out of doctor’s offices with no relief in sight, Scegiel turned to alternative healing, energy, meditation and nutrition. She received her health coaching certification from The Institute for Integrative Nutrition, took a nutrition science course online from Stanford University and has a certification as a psychological fitness specialist from The Human Potential Institute. Today she is at the helm of Santé-a full-service restaurant and a grab and gourmet marketplace that features a menu with global flair in a contemporary and biophilic environment. Diners can look forward to flavorful plates like kelp noodle salad, maple dijon broccolini and raw chilled zucchini lasagna. She draws inspiration from her mother to touch more people’s lives through food in her coaching and restaurant endeavors. “I create a greater impact through sourcing, education and choices I make like employing regenerative ranches and organic local farms,” she says. After living in California, Scegiel is happy to be surrounded by the health-conscious community in Scottsdale, where she was raised. “Scottsdale is beautiful, clean and friendly,” she says. “I am grateful to call it my home again.”

Trainer Caleb Goodale’s athletic wardrobe mixes style with comfort

Caleb Goodale is as active as they come. As an employee at StretchLab (his official title is “flexologist”) and a collegiate athletic trainer, Goodale prefers to wear outfits that are both functional and flexible. Given the nature of his jobs, you will often find him in polished athleisurewear. His style has evolved from nonexistent to intentional and proud. As a teen, he wore cargos. As an adult, he wears jeans, boots and has a skin fade haircut. “I’ve never been a fan of fully-fledged runway fashion. Those styles are typically more than I fancy for my looks,” he says. “I’ve always just loved contrasting color and selecting styles with a masculine edge or at least my interpretation of it.” His signature casual look often comes from an unlikely source. “Anyone who knows me knows I would rather spend hours in Goodwill than any other store,” he says. “I love finding the hidden gems and have always had great luck with finds from Lululemon, Nike shoes and once, a downfeather, fur-lined Ralph Lauren winter coat.” His most prized item of clothing? A 1960s Adidas Olympic bomber jacket, a true gem, that his grandmother gave him. “I absolutely love it,” he says.

What will we see you in on weekends versus workdays? On weekends, you’ll always see me in boots and layering the upper body with hoodies or a trench coat. On weekdays, I get to rock athleisure thanks to my jobs, which I pair with Adidas or Nike runners. How do you feel about social media and style? I love seeing new styles on social media, like oversized T-shirts and what new joggers or sweats are popular. I also love seeing street styles on social media. As a guy, I feel I have more freedom and options. What is your must-have item when it comes to fashion? Black skinny jeans. They always show off great physique, and they go with literally anything.

As the owner of Bronzmopolitan Spray Tan Bar in North Scottsdale, Christy George is a professional when it comes to dishing out the perfect golden glow. “No outfit or style is complete without a little glow on your skin,” she says. To complete her own personal wardrobe, George relies mostly on timeless, classic basics. Think a little black dress, jeans, classic band T-shirts and her favorite denim jackets. Born and raised in the Valley, George’s style has evolved through the years and has been inspired by her travels and social media influencers. “I absolutely love seeing a specific look and thinking, ‘I can do that, but with my own little spin on it,’” she says. “Mixing textures and prints keeps it fun and pulls me out of my old, safe ways. Plaids and corduroy. Prints and neutrals. Classic little black dress and a denim jacket and combat boots.” Despite her constantly changing looks, one thing remains the same: her affinity for neutrals. “I love all the warm beige, tan, bronze, copper and rust colors” she says. She also takes style cues from her clientele. Being surrounded by trendy Scottsdale women daily influences George’s wardrobe. “I’m always up to date on the latest trends thanks to my clients. Before their special occasions, I love hearing what they will be wearing,” she says.

Who has influenced your style? When I was younger, I was inspired by Britney Spears. Her style was everything: low cut jeans, crop tops, crimped hair, boxer brief short shorts. As for style icons over the years, I’d be a fool to not mention Princess Diana and Madonna. What is your most prized possession? My Louis Vuitton purse that my husband saved up for and surprised me with when we first started dating fresh out of high school. It meant so much to me then and still does today. Where do you like to shop? Rockin Street Wear. I love the band T-shirts and vibe there, and the owners are amazing. I also love Target and Zara because I always find something.

Katharine McPhee joins a star-studded lineup in the battle to end cancer at Celebrity Fight Night

atharine McPhee’s star power has been evident since she took to the screen in 2006 as a contestant on the fifth season of American Idol – a run replete with awe-inspiring performances that gave rise to the term “McPheever” among fans. This month, McPhee will perform at one of the Valley’s most anticipated charity events, Celebrity Fight Night, when it takes place on March 12 at the JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa with the goal of raising millions in the battle against cancer. It's certain to be another stand-out moment in McPhee’s illustrious career, a career that was kickstarted at a young age at the encouragement of her family. “My mom and my grandfather on my dad’s side were both singing teachers, so music was always around the house from a young age,” McPhee says. “I can’t even remember questioning what I wanted to do with my future – it was always performing.” McPhee studied musical theater at Boston Conservatory before earning one of her first major roles in 2005, starring as the titular Annie Oakley in a production of Annie Get Your Gun held at the 5-Star Theatricals theater in Thousand Oaks, California. She was nominated for a Los Angeles Stage Ovation Award for her performance. Also in 2005, McPhee’s family persuaded her to attend an audition that would change the course of her life as she knew it. At the time, American Idol had just solidified its ranking as the most-watched show on U.S. television, and after rocking her audition with a Billie Holiday song, McPhee quickly became an audience favorite. To this day, the fifth season that aired in 2006 remains the highest-rated in the show’s run. This was arguably in no small part thanks to McPhee, who regularly stunned the nearly 30 million viewers per episode with her clear, soaring vocals. After placing second with an emotional performance of her coronation song, My Destiny, McPhee earned a record deal and went on to release numerous singles that placed on the Billboard Hot 100. Her self-titled debut album went gold in 2008. “American Idol definitely gave me

McPhee’s very own Broadway debut came in 2018, when she took to the stage as the lead in the hit musical Waitress. She later went on to originate the role in London’s West End. The most recent entry in McPhee’s acting career – which also includes

appearances in popular TV series such as Community, Scorpion, CSI: NY and Family Guy – is as an aspiring singer in the Netflix original series Country Comfort, which won a Primetime Emmy Award.

A HELPING HAND Such a storied career has provided McPhee with the perfect platform to give back. Just months after participating on American Idol, she founded McPhee Outreach in 2006. The organization provides support to a wide variety of charities working to make a difference in the lives of children across the globe. McPhee Outreach was born from her realization that inspiring change doesn’t have to start with a huge, publicized act of charity – but it has to start somewhere. Over the years, McPhee Outreach has helped nonprofit buildOn construct schools in Burkina Faso—a country in West Africa— to combat illiteracy and break the cycle of poverty, raised money for Hurricane Sandy relief and partnered with Malaria No More. McPhee even visited Ghana to distribute malaria vaccines and mosquito nets. Another program her organization teamed up with was The Lollipop Theater Network’s Rhythm of Hope program, which provides music outreach to children hospitalized in Southern California. McPhee has also put her own musical talents to use for a number of good causes, including earthquake relief. In 2010, she joined forces with stars like Jennifer Hudson and Randy Jackson to remake We Are the World, with proceeds supporting Haiti’s rebuilding efforts following a devastating earthquake that took place on Jan. 12, 2010. McPhee is also a prominent voice in the fight against AIDS, breast cancer and childhood hunger. As a singer, actor and activist, McPhee prides herself on wearing many different hats. And after becoming a new mother in 2021, she’s become all the more vocal about the importance of mental health, especially for new parents. For last year’s World Mental Health Day, she co-hosted a Zumba class to not only help spread the joys of community and inclusivity, but also address how essential it is to reach out to loved ones and professionals when you need help. This is something McPhee has experienced firsthand in her struggle with bulimia, which began at age 17.

For McPhee, seeking professional help – from the same psychiatrist she worked with when she participated in a rehabilitation program after her successful American Idol audition – was essential when thoughts of disordered eating arose during her pregnancy for the first time in years. Another constant source of comfort for her throughout the years is music. “Music has always been a healing instrument in my life,” McPhee says. “The most influential album I owned was Rachmaninoff: The Symphonies. I listened to it going to bed every night throughout high school and college, and it created a lot of peace for me.”

FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT One of the Valley’s signature events, the annual Celebrity Fight Night unites a host of powerhouse musicians in support of a good cause, raising millions of dollars in a single night – and a grand total over $90 million since it was founded by Jimmy Walker in 1994. This year also marks the beginning of a new era – the foundation merged with Gateway for Cancer Research last May, and after its tireless work to combat neurological diseases like Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and dementia, the event has now set its sights on ending cancer. “Sadly, I don’t think anyone can say that they haven’t been touched by cancer somehow,” says McPhee, who is eager to continue the celebration of the life and legacy of Muhammad Ali. The legendary boxer and philanthropist was honored as the event’s featured guest for 20 years before his passing in 2016 after a battle with Parkinson’s disease. The black-tie event – which will include a cocktail reception, silent and live auctions, a gourmet dinner and plenty of unforgettable live performances – will see the return of Reba McEntire as emcee and 16-time Grammy Award-winner David Foster as musical director. In addition to his years-long commitment to Celebrity Fight Night, Foster also plays a special role in McPhee’s life. After meeting while McPhee was a competitor on American Idol, the two began a yearslong friendship that eventually evolved into much more. McPhee and Foster married in 2019 and welcomed their first son, Rennie, in February of 2021. Not just partners in life, the duo are

also frequent partners on stage. Last year, they reached the semi-finals of season six of The Masked Singer, with McPhee on vocals and Foster on piano. McPhee is also involved in her husband’s nonprofit, the David Foster Foundation, which has provided financial support to over 1,300 Canadian families with children in need of organ transplants while increasing awareness about the importance of becoming a registered organ donor. Today, McPhee’s family serves as one of her main driving forces. “My son constantly inspires me. I used to be more motivated by my career – and I still have that desire – but now I wake up every day thinking about him and our little family,” she says.

And her role as a new mother has also informed how she strives to give back. One of her most recent passion projects is making sure new moms are able to meet their baby’s needs under any and all circumstances. “As well as contributing to bigger organizations, I like to make small impacts. This month, meet six local musicians who inspire those around them to share their culture, create change and get up and dance.

Camille Sledge

Solo artist and lead vocalist, Phoenix Afrobeat Orchestra Singer-songwriter Camille Sledge comes from a rich musical tradition. Her parents – Bernard Young, Ph.D., an art education professor at Arizona State University, and singer Debbie Sledge of iconic music group Sister Sledge – have long encouraged her to pursue her passions. “My mother always made sure I followed my heart and created music that had a true message, that wasn’t rooted in a contrived attempt to become a ‘pop artist,’” says Sledge, who also credits her father for teaching her to take pride in her roots, a theme that forms the backbone of her music today. In addition to collaborations with Sister Sledge featuring Sledgendary, including Free, a song set to release this month, Sledge (www.camillesledge.com) is the lead vocalist for Phoenix Afrobeat Orchestra. The 16-piece orchestra showcases classic Afrobeat music alongside original material that combines protest lyrics with elements of funk, jazz, big band and traditional African rhythms. And her most recent solo album, Streetlights and Lullabies, is the first installment in a seven-part, multi-genre album project that embodies what Sledge calls “the message of the Black woman.” Sledge has also harnessed the joy of music in another of her passion projects – School of HipHop PHX (www.schoolofhiphop. net). Through workshops and camps, the nonprofit works to make art education accessible to young artists, using elements of hip hop and instrumentation to teach dance, public speaking, engineering, visual arts and financial literacy. The chance to work with the next generation has left Sledge with a wealth of proud mentor moments. “I remember crying after seeing a very shy young girl open up at the end of our five-day summer camp. She’d never gone near a microphone before, and the most beautiful singing came out of her – she had us stunned!” In both her community work and music, Sledge’s goal remains the same – to leave a lasting impact on society. “I hope people will go beyond the songs I’ve written to begin some uncomfortable conversations,” she says. “I like to see movement and agitation in the community, created when people rethink their worldviews – and do so with love.”

Kira Brown & Scotty Johnson Singer-songwriter and guitar, Honeygirl

The duo behind Honeygirl – a band that blends elements of country, rock and pop into a genre they call Sonoran country music – Kira Brown and Scotty Johnson are familiar faces in the Valley’s music scene. Growing up, Brown always admired her musically-talented family members and wished one day to be on stage herself, but she knew she lacked the confidence. It wasn’t until age 23 that she started taking singing lessons in secret, eventually entering a handful of karaoke contests. Johnson and Brown first connected in 2009 at The Vig Arcadia, where Johnson was performing with another local sensation, Elvis Before Noon. “I didn’t even realize he was a professional musician at first – and surprisingly, he’s in one of my favorite bands!” Brown says. “When I met Scotty, he encouraged me to get out there and perform and write songs. To this day, I still get nervous – for the first three years, I was so scared every time I got on stage that my teeth would chatter! – but every performance has been a learning experience.” Years later, the couple is still going strong, performing as a band under the name Honeygirl (www.honeygirlmusic.com) at a variety of local venues, including a monthly gig at Old Town Tavern. For Johnson, a veteran musician who’s had a diverse career since he first picked up the guitar at age 13, the thrill of a live performance never gets old. “My favorite part is the feeling of being just about to lose control, like you’re about to drive off a cliff,” says Johnson, whose impressive resume also features Roger Clyne and The Peacemakers and Gin Blossoms, perhaps best known for the 1993 hit single Hey Jealousy. Brown says, “My passion for music has grown into a passion for the community we’ve built and the fun we have as a band. I want to be the best singer and songwriter I can be, but the bottom line is that I want to be surrounded by great people, great musicians and great music – and I am. We are so blessed.”

Casey Killian

Songwriter and lead singer, The Crown Kings As the lead vocalist of Phoenix-based band The Crown Kings, songwriter Casey Killian has been the life of the party for over two decades. After four years in the Marine Corps – where Killian and his fellow servicemen were typically found jamming together when they weren’t fixing planes or cleaning rifles – Killian worked in security in San Diego, California, using his free time to refine his craft under the guidance of other talented musicians. When the first of his three sons was born, Killian relocated to the Valley, where he performed solo at open mics before establishing a band that played original material at small venues and private parties. “After a few years, we incorporated several cover songs and learned that we could actually make money! Soon after, The Crown Kings were born – we’ve played under that name now for over 20 years and counting,” he says. While the band is known for high-energy covers of rock, soul and country classics from the ’70s onwards, The Crown Kings’ (www. crownkings.com) original music features dynamic lyrics with a Southern flair. Killian, a writer of poems and short stories since childhood, first discovered music as a creative outlet after his mother insisted he take guitar lessons. “My instructor at the time was terminally stoned and taught me the same lesson every week. And I was a terrible student, so I took advantage of that and never practiced. To this day, I have a solid understanding of about four chords,” Killian says. In his solo music, as well as his work with The Crown Kings and as half of an acoustic duo, Killian hopes his music will provide listeners with an escape from the pressures of everyday life. “The human experience is replete with overwhelming emotion, tragedy, elation and everything in between,” he says. “I have the chance to write something that resonates with 100 different people for 100 different reasons, to help someone forget their troubles for a bit, to inspire a younger generation to create music – and play music that keeps butts out of seats and feet moving. Who wouldn’t want this job?”

Stanley Serrano Solo artist

Ever since he started singing at age 3, Stanley Serrano has been a firm believer in music’s power to unite people across boundaries. Much of his passion stems from a childhood spent in the church, a community that has empowered generations of young musicians. “My mom always tells this story that at 6 months old I would hum church songs before I could even speak,” says Serrano, whose parents – who met in Los Angeles after they immigrated from El Salvador – had a similarly strong influence on his life. “I was raised in a Christian home and was very restricted as far as what kind of music I was allowed to listen to. This has brought some setbacks, but it also forced me to be more creative and instinctual in developing my voice,” he says. Serrano gained notoriety in the Christian Latino community after recording two albums with his younger brother at age 8. He later embarked on a journey from California to Arizona, where the multi-instrumentalist has been refining his craft for nearly two decades. After a rewarding career playing bass for musicians like Annette Moreno and Tercer Cielo, Serrano (www.stanleyserrano.com) is grateful for the chance to be behind the microphone again. He recently performed his new Sting tribute show, the Desert Rose Project, at the Musical Instrument Museum. “The amount of love, respect and joy from everyone gathered became an instant highlight reel of my life,” he says. “The support from the Phoenix audience and my fellow musicians electrified that night.” With weekly gigs across the Valley – as a solo artist, frontman of the Stanley Serrano Trio or accompanied by a full band – Serrano wants his performances of covers and original music to play a part in sparking acts of compassion. “If I’ve seen a group of people from all walks of life sit and enjoy music together, it’s possible to live alongside one another peacefully,” he says. “Spread more love. Spread more joy. No matter what, be the best human you can be.”

Kim Weston

Singer-songwriter, violinist and poet BY JILL SCHILDHOUSE

Although she shares the same name as the famous 1960s Motown artist from Michigan who worked with Marvin Gaye among others, Arizona-based singer-songwriter Kim Weston has a soulful jazz sound and style all her own. She’s spent years performing all over the Grand Canyon state with her jazz band and wedding duo at private events, restaurants and bars. Last August, she performed an original set at the Chandler Center for the Arts — her first time curating a show featuring all her own music. “Arizona has a very exciting community of musicians with incredible talent,” she says. “Every night of the week my friends and colleagues are doing something interesting somewhere, and I am excited to be a part of a future of which I have been eagerly waiting to create and enjoy.” Her dream is to be the next Melody Gardot, an American jazz singer, touring on big stages and selling out shows. Weston’s affinity for music first appeared at age 9, when she began taking violin lessons — but her relationship with music was instilled practically at birth. “Although I lost my dad early in life, I remember a guitar in his hand for most interactions,” she says. “I have lots of pictures of him playing to me when I was little, and I truly think my soul connects to life in the same way his did, through music.” After high school, Weston started a family and began writing poetry as her creative outlet. She has penned hundreds of poems and short stories over the decades, and today she pairs most of them with melodies and turns them into songs. “Songwriters are poets,” she says. “Lyrics are poetry that come to life through marrying melodies, rhythms and feel to further express with more texture. So many of my favorite musicians — Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Lana Del Rey and Leonard Cohen — have their poetry published alongside their recording careers.” Weston is busy putting together a new show for 2022, drawing upon inspiration from the Herbie Hancock and Joni Mitchell album River: The Joni Letters. “It’s the perfect pairing of Joni’s poetry and Herbie’s jazz interpretation,” she says. “I have been wanting to do this for a few years now and am thrilled to be at the place where I feel comfortable leading this venture.”

Feb. 10-13, Symphony Hall Ballet Arizona and The Phoenix Symphony have partnered to present one of the most legendary love stories of all time, Romeo & Juliet, over Valentine’s Day weekend. reast self-exams, Pap smears, PSA screenings, genetic tests, colonoscopies—everywhere you turn, it seems, new recommendations are coming out about screening tests for various cancers. The information overload and sometimes-contradicting guidelines have many people confused: Should I get screened? If so, why, when and how often? The answers aren’t simple, or always black and white, but knowing which screenings are recommended for which cancers, and understanding your risks, is the first step in making sense of the confusion—and arming yourself with information you need to know about catching cancer early, when more options are more likely available to treat it, or prevent it altogether. Given all the talk about cancer prevention these days, it may surprise you to know that screening tests have been developed for some but not all cancers, and a variety of considerations must be weighed by both doctor and patient when determining whether screening for a particular cancer type is warranted. Risk factors such as lifestyle habits, family history, comorbidities (other serious medical conditions, such as diabetes or heart disease) and environmental exposures all play pivotal roles in the decision-making process.

Cancer screenings are of increasing importance, especially as cancer diagnoses continue to rise. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that between 2010 and 2020, 24 percent more new cancer cases will be diagnosed in men (rising to 1 million a year) and 21 percent more new cases will be diagnosed in women (rising to more than 900,000 a year). At the same time, though, National Cancer Institute figures show that survival rates are at an all-time high—with nearly 15.5 million survivors living in the United States in 2016. That number is projected to reach 20.3 million by 2026. Cancer-related deaths also continue to drop steadily, falling 26 percent between 1991 and 2015. Many experts attribute the improved outcomes to treatment advances, prevention awareness efforts—and screenings designed to detect cancer in the early stages, when interventions tend to have the most impact. Straddling the Nevada and California border, Lake Tahoe boasts 27 beaches, 15 ski resorts, hundreds of miles of trails and idyllic communities with fine dining and après ski hotspots galore. Lake Tahoe is accessible via a 90-minute flight from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport to Reno-Tahoe International Airport. Given its sheer size, the lake and its surrounding area are divided into two distinct regions: Tahoe South and North Lake Tahoe. Those looking for casinos and a more raucous nightlife can find what they’re searching for at Tahoe South. However, travelers seeking elevated outdoor adventures with fewer crowds and an overall more peaceful vibe may prefer North Lake Tahoe. Blanketed by snow from December through late April – often into May – North Lake Tahoe is a winter wonderland. The region, comprised of 12 distinct villages, is home to the largest concentration of ski resorts in North America. Winter sports enthusiasts can visit Boreal Ski Resort, Diamond Peak Ski Resort, Donner Ski Ranch, Granlibakken Ski Area, Homewood Ski Resort, Mount Rose Ski Resort, Northstar at Tahoe Ski Resort, Palisades Tahoe, Soda Springs Ski Resort, Sugarbowl Ski Resort and Tahoe Donner Ski Resort. Though each resort has its own charms, Palisades and Northstar are of particular note. Despite the chill outside, Sel Restaurant is on fire thanks to its five course winter prix fixe menu offered throughout February. The first course – Beau Soleil Oysters – starts the dining experience off on an opulent yet whimsical note. Rather than serve the mild Atlantic Ocean delicacies on the half shell, chef Branden Levine combines the extracted fish with cauliflower, cream, fish sauce and egg yolks to create a savory sabayon – or frothy custard – then pairs it with sake- and oyster liqueur-infused beurre blanc sauce and tapioca pearls. The dish, which is topped with vibrant orange smoked trout roe and chives, was inspired by Thomas Keller’s famed oysters and pearls course at The French Laundry in Napa Valley, California. Picazzo’s Healthy Italian Kitchen offers a lighter twist on Arizona’s iconic Prickly Pear Margarita

Feb. 14 is not just Valentine’s Day in the Grand Canyon State. “All the way back in 1912 – 110 years ago – Feb. 14 also marked the day Arizona became a state,” says Chris Disney, managing partner of Picazzo’s Healthy Italian Kitchen. “And while we are an Italian eatery, we use our cocktail program to celebrate Arizona in a few ways.” The eatery uses local spirits and beers whenever possible. Specifically, guests can look forward to Copper City Bourbon, O.H.S.O.’s Arcadia brand vodkas, Lumberyard Hefeweizen and Mother Road Tower Station IPA. “We also have a signature cocktail that shines a light on one of our Sonoran Desert’s most beloved indigenous ingredients: the prickly pear,” says Disney. “A flowering plant that grows atop cactus shrubs across Arizona, prickly pears are equal parts visually appealing thanks to its pink hue as well as delicious, boasting a honey sweet taste with notes of melon and fig.” Picazzo’s Prickly Pear Margarita ($11) bursts with the native plant’s signature flavor profile thanks to a syrup made from The Perfect Purée Prickly Pear, a sustainable field-to-jar puree. The syrup is combined in a shaker with lime juice for acid and Tres Agaves Organic Margarita Mix, chosen because it lacks processed ingredients such as high fructose corn syrup. “Finally, we add Espolòn Reposado. Aged in new American oak barrels up to five months, it boasts notes of tropical fruit, vanilla and brown spices, imparting complex layers of flavor to the build,” says Disney. Israel Medina is the executive chef at Roaring Fork, where he crafts bold American cuisine in the spirit of the Old West almost exclusively using an open wood flame grill or wood oven roasting.

What first got you into the kitchen? I am the oldest of three kids. Our mom raised us on her own in a small town near Lake Tahoe while working full time in the restaurant industry. Somehow, she managed a home cooked meal almost every night. Once I was old enough, I started helping her, which ignited my passion for food. How did you get your professional start? It wasn’t until I graduated in 2000 and moved to Arizona that I began really honing my craft. After line cook positions in Sedona, I joined North Italia, then part of Fox Restaurant Concepts. I stayed with Fox, primarily at North and Olive + Ivy, for nearly nine years, learning to break down fish, butcher and so much more. How did you come to Roaring Fork? Eventually, I moved to Kelly’s at Southbridge, where I was the executive chef, before overseeing culinary operations at DeSoto Central Market and then Salty Sow. We closed Salty amid COVID-19, but the parent company also owns Roaring Fork. They needed an executive chef, so it was kismet. What makes Roaring Fork special? Most folks know about our all-wood oven and grill. They may not know, however, that we use a proprietary combination of pecan, oak and mesquite to infuse our signature flavor. We also cut our steaks in house, have fish flown in daily and source locally from Mediterra Bakehouse, Grand Avenue Produce and others. If visiting for the first time, what dishes are musts? The green chili pork stew has perfect spice, and when paired with the buttered tortillas we source from Mama Lola’s, you will be in flavor heaven. Also, our “Big Ass” Burger is legendary, thanks in great part to grinding our patties in-house with chuck, filet and ribeye. What would readers be surprised to know about you? Sci-Fi fan? Rom-com connoisseur? Horror habitué? No matter what genre of film tickles your fancy, Landmark Theatres has your ticket. This theatre features eight total screens and is now open at Scottsdale Quarter, taking the place of iPic Scottsdale on the upper floor of the luxury entertainment center. The theatre, designed by TK Architects, is Landmark’s first theatre in Arizona, but not its first foray into the business. Founded in 1974, the brand has grown to more than 35 locations with 220 screens in 23 markets over the past near50 years as of press time. It boasts both award-winning historic theatres such as the Los Angeles’ Nuart Theatre, The Del Mar in Santa Cruz, California, and Denver’s Mayan Theatre. The brand also includes more contemporary theatres including its flagship locations The Landmark in Los Angeles, The Landmark at Merrick Park in Miami and The Landmark Theatre Greenwood Village in Denver’s Tech Center. The Scottsdale location is focused on providing viewers a mix of big-budget blockbusters, independent films, foreign films, documentaries and comedies. Movies

shown will lean toward more adult fare given the upscale environment, though there will be some family content too. On occasion, it may also play restored classic films. Landmark invested in top-of-the-line NEC digital projectors and a 3D system by XpanD for the location, and each individual theatre has been outfitted with cutting-edge JBL speakers that use the latest iteration of Dolby digital sound. Landmark also provides closed caption readers and audio headsets for audience members with hearing loss. Beyond the technology, each of the guest seats reclines mechanically. Landmark kept the expansive full bar left by iPic in addition to the general look and feel of the gourmet concession stand spaces, with upgrades to the paint and lighting. The lounge area is also still in place, with flat-screen televisions playing sports and plush furniture throughout. While there will be no full-service in-theatre dining at the Scottsdale location, the gourmet concessions offered range from the standard popcorn and candy to ice cream sandwiches, hot dogs and baked goods such as cookies. A full bar will also be offered with a revolving list of seasonal cocktails. Beer and wine will be sold by the glass and bottle. Any alcoholic beverages other than those purchased on premise are prohibited. Outside of regular movie-going, each of the theatres is available for private rental. The theatre’s technology allows for a group to screen its own current release, big-screen gaming or to watch homemade DVDs or Blu-ray Discs. X-rated films of any kind are not allowed. The space may also be rented for business or social meetings outside of movie-watching and gaming as well. Landmark’s hours of operation vary based on movie showtimes, but the theater is open approximately from 11 a.m. to midnight daily. Landmark Theatres, 15257 N.
