spring color trends

in your step Put a with the season’s hottest

2021 was, of necessity, all about low maintenance colors, but now it’s time to start having fun with your hair color once more. 2022’s hottest spring trends are all about leveling up your lockdown look, according to Rodney Gentry of Scottsdale’s Saachi Studios. “Spring’s hair colors are showing that it’s time to come out of hiding and start enjoying the world once more,” he says. “From rich, all-over color to fabulous tones for highlights and lowlights, it’s time for your color to be bright, bold and beautiful.” For all-over color, expect plenty of red tones this spring, as well as lighter browns that leave the darkness of winter behind and carry hints of the summer sunshine that’s yet to come. Social media has been awash with influencers framing their faces with bold streaks of color, also known as e-girl streaks. Reds, along with a whole spectrum of other colors, are expected to make an appearance in e-girl streaks this spring. This season, this trend will be taken further, with two-tone streaks and some dazzlingly bright colors. “While e-girl streaks look fabulous set against dark hair, they can also look stunning with blonde locks, making this a versatile and accessible style for everyone to experiment with this spring,” Gentry says. In terms of techniques, balayage will continue growing in popularity over the course of the spring. The hand-painted style produces beautiful, natural-looking color in all tones, while it’s also ideal for pastel colors, for a truly fresh spring look. More traditional coloring techniques also remain popular. “Both highlights and lowlights will continue to remain popular, even as a growing number of clients try out balayage,” Saachi Studio’s Gentry says. “What’s different this spring is that clients are going for brighter highlights and richer, deeper lowlights. 2022 really is the time to celebrate color in a wide range of ways.”

Full-service designer and hair color specialist Rodney Gentry can be reached at Sachi Studios in Scottsdale, AZ. Call 480.639.2000 to make an appointment or visit www.rodneygentry.com for more information.

Contents Welcome to our home issue. I can’t think of a better time than right now to run a cover story about outstanding homes. The local housing market is white-hot with home prices at record highs and properties being snatched up in a flash. We decided to spotlight five modern and luxurious Scottsdale properties that are currently on the market. Each of these five homes is truly spectacular. I could daydream all day about lounging in these living rooms and swimming out under the stars in these pools. Don’t miss this feature on page 62. Springs is in full swing, and that means there’s plenty to do in Scottsdale while the weather is near-perfect daily. If you’re looking for ideas, be sure to check our Calendar on page 52. From galas to a celebration of tiki drinks, there’s bound to be something that piques your interests. Rock star Alice Cooper is hosting the CoopStock concert to raise money for his teen centers. This is probably the Valley’s liveliest, and certainly loudest, fundraiser. Read more on page 45. If the warmer weather has you dreaming of summer travel, start your planning now. Learn more about some new restaurants and attractions in Las Vegas on page 98. I can’t wait to eventually check out the bakery that Dominique Ansel (the inventor of the cronut) is behind the next time I’m in Sin City. We’ve also featured the truly epic Four Seasons Jackson Hole on page 94. This opulent resort is nearby Grand Teton National Park and offers luxury in a wild setting. While we’re on the subject of nature, Earth Day is on April 22. To commemorate the occasion, we decided to highlight a selection of dishes made with sustainable ingredients. If you’re looking for delicious ways to celebrate the Earth, find them on page 104. Also in our food section, discover sake of all stripes (page 100), meet chef-owner Josh Ivey of Craft 64 (page 103), and check out a colorful cocktail with an even more colorful backstory (page 102). Finally, our shop section is filled with items you’ll love. See home goods made out of natural materials (page 72), makeup that literally shimmers (page 70), sky high platforms (page 76) and clothing and accessories with romantic and feminine flair (page 74). We hope you enjoy this issue. Welcome home. All the best, Teresa K. Traverse Interim Editor teresa@richmanmediagroup.com Instagram: @tktraverse Connect with us! BEST WISHES

Make-A-Wish Arizona’s new CEO, Fran Mallace, is in the business of hope

Make-A-Wish Arizona is the founding chapter of the international organization that makes wishes come true for children with life-threatening illnesses. Recently, the organization named Fran Mallace, a member of Make-A-Wish Board of directors since 2016, president and chief executive officer.

Mallace has a generous and open demeanor. She’s eager to praise her colleagues and team members for the successes of the organizations that she has been a part of and has led. Prior to taking on this role at Make-A-Wish, Mallace worked at Cox Media for more than 30 years. Most recently, she was group vice

So Scottsdale! April ‘22

33

Pulse UP CLOSE president. In that role, she helped drive revenue and digital marketing solutions with local, national and digital teams. She also championed Cox’s diversity and inclusion principles. It was through Cox that she first became involved with MakeA-Wish. “A colleague of mine was just coming off of the board, and I was invited to Wish Ball. The minute I attended, I knew that I wanted to be involved,” she says. “In fact, I said that the only job I’d ever consider leaving Cox for is Make-A-Wish.” After that first Wish Ball – the organization’s annual fundraiser – Mallace was able to join the board of directors in 2016. She worked with the resource development committee to assist the development team in obtaining new and substantial donors. Her assistance helped the board grow its fundraising efforts by double-digits year over year and expand its community of givers throughout the state. “We are pleased to add Fran to an already strong team of leaders and staff who are dedicated to growing the number of wish kids we reach each year,” says Andrea Tazioli, chair of the Make-A-Wish Arizona board of directors and leader of the recruitment committee. “Fran is a seasoned leader with incredible business acumen, and her passion for our mission and her innovative ideas to help the chapter continue on a path of success made this very important decision an easy one.”

Stepping Into Her New Role Mallace feels that her work with Cox, in many ways, prepared her to take the leadership reins at Make-A-Wish. “Giving back to the community is very symbolic of who Cox is as a company. They really work to make things better for the future of the community,” said Mallace. “When you take on a leadership role, the focus is on how you work with people in terms of creating a community. You learn to give back and pay it forward any time you have the ability to do so. So it’s been a nice path and journey that led me here today.” As CEO, Mallace wants to focus on continuing to grow fundraising efforts, granting more wishes and working hard to increase wish referrals. Since many wishes involve travel or trips to theme parks, over the past two years, the organization has had to re-imagine the way wishes are granted. And, again, Mallace credits her team with being creative and committed to granting wishes in difficult circumstances. “I’m constantly impressed with how incredible this team is and how fortunate I am to work with them,” she said. “Wishes have become largely local, but we’ve still been able to pull together some incredible experiences. We’ve rebuilt backyards. One family rented an RV and went to national parks across the West. Another girl’s wish was to go on a Disney Cruise. Instead, we built a music studio in her house, and she performed for all of the chapter CEOs at a recent conference. It was amazing.”

Finding Hope Another one of Mallace’s goals is to remind people that MakeA-Wish is about many of the illnesses that the wish kids are afflicted with are life-threatening, and not necessarily life-ending.

34

So Scottsdale! April ‘22

“The good news is, because of the medical advances that have happened since Make-A-Wish was founded, many wish kids outlive their disease,” says Mallace. “But the wishes give them a respite from the treatments, doctors and illness. It’s beneficial for their mental health as much as their physical health and for their families as well. And we’ve seen miracles happen.” Most of all, Make-A-Wish is in the business of hope, says Mallace. And some of the best experiences she’s had with the organization is meeting with the wish kids, talking to them, hearing about their experiences and hopes for the future. The chapter has been recognized as a Best Places to Work in the Valley by the Phoenix Business Journal annually since 2014 and a Top Companies to Work for in the Valley by www. BestCompaniesAZ.com since 2017. “I am thrilled to be part of Make-A-Wish Arizona. I love the people and love what we do. To come here from a corporate environment that also had a focus on making things better for the future is exciting,” she says. “This is another place where people really like to come to work every day, and the team feels connected to our mission. I want to continue that. We’re riding a nice wave of opportunity as things start to open back up.” “Giving back to the Arizona community has always been important to me, and my true passion is making a difference for children, so what could be better than making wishes come true for those who need them most with the best team possible,” says Mallace.

TONY TRANSFORMATIONS Designer Mary Hampton takes closets from drab to dashing

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

Closets are places that many people dread spending any time in. But Mary Hampton, owner of Hampton Design & Closets, is out to change that. Hampton crafts luxury custom closets with pristinely organized racks of clothing and shoes that gives her clients a chic yet entirely functional space. With a background in flipping homes, the southern California native made a name for herself in the male-dominated industry. “I was an advocate and innovator in design and made longtime builders see projects in a whole new light,” she says. After falling in love with one-of-a-kind finishes and creating an organized space for everything, Hampton Design & Closets was born. Hampton’s natural knack for business and a pristine eye for details contribute to her success as an industry leader in custom closet design. “My team and I are able to improve any space well beyond closets or garages to ultimately eliminate the day-to-day chaos of life and the way you live and how well your space can meet your needs,” Hampton says. “I have always been an entrepreneur and thrive on creating a life I love while making a big impact on my client’s space.” Hampton spends most of her time working with luxury residential builders. She perfects all facets of custom closets including personalizing layouts that reflect the client’s wardrobe, accentuating architecture, adding enchanted lighting and fine-tuning details to complement other areas in the home. She strives to help her clients truly love their houses and even founded a nonprofit along with her two children to help others, Rare Ambition. “It’s designed to help families in need during Thanksgiving and is the most rewarding thing I have done in my life,” she says. She was also motivated to start Rare Ambition to make sure her kids had every opportunity for themselves. “I was and am not the mom who wants to give them everything or for them to have it all, but I wanted to provide the opportunity for them to be great in their own ways,” she says.

BY BECKY ANTIOCO / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

When Molly Stockley came to Phoenix in 2002 to work for KTVK Channel 3, she became close friends with her colleague Kristina “Kristi” A. Stockley. A few years into their friendship, Kristi was diagnosed with stage four melanoma and wanted to start a skin cancer foundation to raise awareness of the disease. Unfortunately, Kristi passed away in 2006 at the age of 28 before she was able to fulfill that wish. Stockley was in the midst of a successful, 18-year career in broadcast media when she was asked to cover the opening of the new Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) Tennis Championship. She was moved by the organization’s message and mission and decided to make a career change to honor her friend. Since 2008, she has been working with CTCA, a national network of cancer hospitals and clinics. Currently, Stockley is the regional vice president of marketing for CTCA. She works to “execute with the purpose to provide and improve high-quality cancer care, along with educating the public on cancer prevention, with Kristi always engrained in my heart,” she says. For this work, she has been honored with an ATHENA Award. The award honors women who have consistently invested in themselves, their profession, their community and have mentored other women throughout their careers. Winners have also dedicated themselves to the community through charitable activities. “I am honored to have been selected as an ATHENA Award recipient. The ATHENA is the pinnacle of women in business,” says Stockley. In addition to her work with CTCA, Molly and her husband Bob, founded Kristi Cares, The Kristina A. Stockley Melanoma Foundation. The organization’s mission is to educate people about the importance of proper sun safety. “I strive to be a virtuous leader, an authentic mentor and purposeful community contributor not for recognition or accolades,” she says. “I do it to leave a legacy for my two little boys, Jackson and Jacob. My husband and I teach them the importance of being kind, humble, helpful and contributing to society. To be a good person. A great human. To be an Athena.”

CREATIVE COUTURE

Augusto Herrera combines sophisticated looks with a dash of rock ‘n’ roll

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

As the creative brain behind MindWay Graphics, a design and photography company, Augusto Herrera’s work inspires his wardrobe. “Style, to me, is permission to appreciate yourself,” he says. “Being able to disconnect my definition of style and imagine my clients’ style is one of the most important factors of problem-solving as a designer.” From herringbone patterns to dark moody hues, Herrera’s European fits let his physique shine. “It’s the only way to reward myself for the work I put in at the gym,” he says. Herrera believes that to command respect, you have to dress the part. For him that means clean and sophisticated lines with a touch of rock ‘n’ roll. “My mom’s greatest advice to me was to be wellgroomed and have nice shoes,” he says. It’s no wonder Herrera’s Gucci blue suede shoes are his most prized possession. “They inadvertently remind me of Elvis and mostly because my wife bought them for me and I married her in them,” he says.

Who influences your style? My parents, David Bowie, Ian Astbury, Scott Weiland. Bowie was a pioneer of combining rock and fashion and evolving. Ian Astbury is a rock singer who was devoted to rock fashion in the ‘80s without adhering to managers’ demands. This always held value to me about not succumbing to popular trends and exhibiting true artistic value with your attire. What are your favorite brands? John Varvatos for style and design. Hugo Boss for quality, affordability and custom fitting for comfort. Ralph Lauren for style and sophistication. Gucci for shoes and belts. How do you feel about social media and style? Social media has become oversaturated with shortcuts, thinking, styles, originality. I follow accounts aimed at projecting men’s style for inspiration and photogenic concepts.

STRIKING STATEMENTS Always on-trend hairstylist Asia McQueen favors vivid, bold looks

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY

Color, style and texture are all things that Asia McQueen loves—when styling her clients’ hair and deciding what to wear. The Seattle-born hairstylist has a vibrant closet that’s filled with statement pieces and sky high heels. The owner of Asia McQueen salon in Scottsdale, McQueen’s style has evolved to include classy pieces like silk and satin blouses and dresses from Guess and Neiman Marcus. Her signature look includes black leggings with a bold top or classic dress and heels. For her casual daily outfits, she relies on tops and bodysuits from Good American, Naked Wardrobe, Skims and Oh Polly. “A good bodysuit with jeans, leggings or a skirt just always works,” she says. With 13 years of experience in the hair industry, she’s a bona fide trend spotter. “Social media including Instagram and TikTok has been a game changer for fashion,” she says. “It’s now where I find all my inspiration.”

Do you change up your hair often? I’m constantly changing my hairstyle. I’ll wear it big and curly or blow it out with lots of movement. I try and keep fashion magazines in my salon and pay attention to what my clients gravitate to. Someone reading Vogue may be fashion forward whereas someone reading People may want to see what’s current. What is the most prized possession in your closet? I’m obsessed with Christian Louboutin. I have just about every neutral color in the Kate style and love their platform five-inch heel. Who are your style icons? I love Chanel tweed suits. I’m a huge fan of European fashion-forward looks that are bold and timeless. I’m obsessed with the way Naomi Campbell carries herself and Sarah Jessica Parker.

WINE AND DINE

Wine pairing dinners abound this spring Some things are much better together. Like food and wine, for instance. With that idea in mind, here are five local restaurants offering wine pairing dinners throughout the spring.

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

The Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort & Spa One night each month, the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort & Spa hosts a winemaker dinner. Each evening begins at 6:30 p.m. with a wine reception and hors d’oeuvres before the featured wines are paired with a four-course dinner on the Hyatt’s grand patio. On April 21, the resort welcomes DAOU Vineyards from Paso Robles, California. Post-dinner, wines from the featured winemaker are available for purchase at a discount. $149++ per person. Reservations are required. www.hyatt.com The Mick Brasserie The modern French bistro hosts a dinner in partnership with a vineyard or distributor nearly every single Wednesday evening. Each event begins at 6 p.m. and is hosted in partnership with Executive Chef Brent Menke and restaurant sommelier Jeff Menzer. Some nights, there is a set menu. On other nights, guests can choose from a handful of options. Notable wine pairing dinners this spring include Charles Krug in Napa Valley on April 20 and Opolo Vineyards in Central California on May 4. Prices vary based on menu and winery. Reservations are required. www.themickaz.com Hearth ‘61 One Sunday a month, the Mountain Shadows Resort Scottsdale restaurant features a notable winery, distillery or local purveyor as part of its Sunday Supper series. On May 15, Executive Chef Charles Wiley and Chef de Cuisine Alfred Muro will welcome The Prisoner Wine Company. Based in St. Helena, California, The Prisoner started in 2000 with a little-known red blend from winemaker Dave Phinney. Attendees can enjoy a special four-course dinner menu with thoughtful wine pairings. Dinner begins at 6 p.m. $149++ per person. Reservations are required. www.mountainshadows.com ZuZu Prefer your wine with a side of whimsy? Look no further than ZuZu where chef Russell LaCasce is all about having fun with flavors without ever taking itself too seriously. During its monthly Versus series, ZuZu invites two breweries, wineries and/or distilleries to each pair their creations with multiple courses. Guests vote on their favorite pairing for each course. On April 21, ZuZu invites Sonoma County’s Jackson Family Wines and Napa Valley’s Trinchero Family Estates to go head-tohead. $159 ++ per person. DESERT DISTILLERIES

Go behind the scenes to see how local spirits are made While Arizona’s neighbor to the South is a titan of tequila, State 48 is quickly becoming a mecca for craft distilleries specializing in vodka, gin, rum and whiskey. Many of these spirited operations have recently re-opened tours and tastings to the public. Here are some favorites statewide.

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

SanTan Spirits SanTan Brewing Company began quietly distilling in 2015 before opening Spirit House, a craft distillery and tasting room, in 2019 behind its long-time Chandler pub. There are both traditional and experimental offerings in its current line-up, notably bourbon, vodka and gin plus bottled cocktails, herbal amaro, coffee liqueur and brandy. The current distillery tour, $15 per person, takes guests behind the scenes of the brewery and showcases a 35,000-square-foot working production facility. Look forward to ample samples along the way. $15 per person. www.santanspirits.com O.H.S.O. Distillery When O.H.S.O. (Outrageous Home Brewer’s Social Outpost) opened in Arcadia in 2011, the focus was beer. Distilling was eventually added to the mix. Today, the North Scottsdale location serves as the headquarters for the distillery operations. O.H.S.O. crafts gin, rum and whiskey brands and the popular Arcadia Vodka collection, which features up to eight flavored offerings. During its tour and tasting package, which costs $35 for two, guests receive a guided tour, four tasting spirits and one bottle to take home. www.ohsobrewery.com Blue Clover Distillery Old Town Scottsdale’s first micro-distillery makes its vodka with farm-fresh corn and uses reserve osmosis water to give the water used to make the vodka a fresh taste. Also of note, the botanicals in Blue Cover’s gin are inspired by the American Southwest. Thanks to floorto-ceiling glass walls, anyone visiting can see where all the small-batch spirits are produced in the distillery room that houses its handmade copper stills. While the front row access to the process is complimentary, private tours and buyouts are available for a fee. www.bluecloverdistillery.com Whiskey Del Bac Founded by a furniture designer who used mesquite wood in his work to showcase the native Arizona plant, Whiskey Del Bac is made by malting barley over mesquite wood to achieve what the founder calls a “mesquited, not peated” flavor. Public and private tours of the popular Southern Arizona distillery are offered several times a week for $35 per person. The 75-minute experience starts with a welcome cocktail followed by a guided tour of the distillery and a comprehensive tasting of the brand’s core products. www.whiskeydelbac.com Grand Canyon Brewing + Distillery Once solely beer brewers, Grand Canyon now has a full distillery operation out of its Williams location in Northern Arizona, offering tours by appointment almost daily. The cost varies based on group size, tastings and optional food pairings. There are also second and third locations – in Flagstaff and Page, respectively, that also offer extensive tasting flights of both beer and spirits in addition to a full dining menu, though no formal tours. www.grandcanyonbrewery.com

METAL MASTERPIECES Artist Peter Skidd creates striking large-scale custom metal artwork

BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE

Art has always been an interest of welder and painter Peter Skidd. As the grandson of Carl Schmitt, a prominent twentieth-century American painter, it was hard for it not to be. After undergrad, he attended the New York Academy of Art, earning an MFA in painting. Originally from Norwalk, Connecticut, Skidd moved to Arizona about 20 years ago and began working as a production artist at Phoenix Art Group. That’s where his story with welding began. “[Phoenix Art Group] had a separate department that did the welding. I just did the painting. I figured I’d like to do both,” Skidd says. “I got myself Welding for Dummies and practiced in my garage.” A $20 book, hours of practice and Skidd’s relentless determination coupled with his natural and trained ability in the arts paid off. In 2006, he launched Skidd Studio (www.skiddstudio.com), where he creates large-scale original metal artwork for Arizona homes and public spaces. On the latter, Renee Taylor Gallery in Sedona and Xanadu Gallery in Scottsdale carry most of his inventory. But because his studio offers free shipping in the United States, Skidd’s art can be found outside of Arizona, too. Skidd creates massive metal sculptures and indoor wall art, like decorative bowls. His grandest piece to date was a custom installation for a hospital, coming in at 16-feet tall and 12-feet wide, with elements suspended from the ceiling. His sculptures are both indoor- and outdoor-friendly, as each receives a UV-stabilized external polyurethane coating that protects against the elements outside. All of his pieces are elaborately handpainted by him with acrylic paints. No two pieces of his are the same. Each piece, as Skidd says, is a complicated, very precision-based process that has taken him years to hone. Even still, nature can interfere in the process. “Everything has to go just right with the paint—everything from the humidity and temperature affects the process and materials,” Skidd says. He describes his art as the subtleties of nature manifesting themselves in architecture. An accurate depiction, as Skidd seeks inspiration from his surroundings, mainly the desert landscape and plays with organic shapes and gradients of color. With so much time, creativity and love poured into each piece, they all become his favorite until he creates something new in its place. Admittedly, he says, “Some of the pieces I make are especially hard to give up.” These days, Skidd is busy creating a surplus of decorative bowls in his Scottsdale-based studio and for the Renee Taylor Gallery in Sedona. “It is a popular gallery, so I am scrambling to keep up with the demand,” he says.

Permanent Make-up

& BEYOND Microblading

BEYOND MICROBLADING As a permanent make up technician and trainer for nearly 30 years I’ve seen many trends come and go. These days one of the first things I hear from people inquiring about services is “I don’t want tattooed eyebrows. I want the soft powdery look that you did for my friend.” This is when I educate the public on the truth about permanent make up and the truth is it’s all tattoo. Years ago when permanent make up was just a fledgling industry in this country many of us worked in the offices of plastic surgeons. We called the procedure micro pigment implantation. Then different techniques were marketed using trade words like soft tap, and recently microblading has been all the rage. Known as the “queen of conservative” My specialty is custom blending colors for each person. Shape, color, technique and science are what create the artistry for beautifully natural eyebrows. Eyelash enhancements. Due to the lockdown most people have lost their eyelash extensions. This is the perfect time to touch up permanent eyeliner before reapplying lashes. I love to create a rich smokey looking lash line rather than a harsh eyeliner look. Safety first. Due to the intimate nature of these procedures safety has always been at the very top of the list. Hospital grade disinfectants are used on surfaces between clients and most importantly all instruments are new, sterile and disposable. Yea! With your safety in mind I will be wearing a mask through your procedure and if you like I will happily provide you with one as well. Because my studio is completely private you need not worry about ever encountering a crowded salon environment.

Life in the Limo™ Rachell Hall Lifestyle Editor

It’s the Journey... I am sure you have all heard the philosophical line “it’s the journey, not the destination”. However, I am a destination writer so how do I reconcile this philosophy? Well, researching and writing this feature Mother’s Day delights article accomplished that task for me. My intention was to bring you, our amazing readers, the most elegant, all be it expensive, Mother’s Day getaway gift and high-end travel ideas. A perfect getaway to beautiful, La Jolla and Del Mar to experience the exceptional San Diego weather and a few world-class resorts. To test the waters, as the saying goes, I decided to celebrate Mother’s Day early and took my mom on the proposed adventure. I thought it would be fun to wear many Mother-Daughter matching outfits on our trip. We spent two days prior trying on our matching attire including matching tea hats, matching pants, matching brunch outfits, and matching pool wear for lounging at probably “The Del” in our Donatella Versaci bathing suits and coverups. My mother is 89 years old … and a very good sport. The main Mother’s Day delight on this trip is to take your Mother to tour the Ranunculus Fields (theflowerfields.com) in Carlsbad. One would usually have to make a trek to the Tulip fields in the Netherlands to compare, but so lucky for us, this floral fairy event is just a short plane ride. You can buy your Ranunculus field tickets in advance and upon arrival you board an open-air wagon to tour the vast 50-acre fields of multicolored flowers, it is as if you are touring a bouquet.

Rachell Hall is an author/photographer/health and beauty expert/food and wine enthusiast and world class adventurer. If you, your service or resort would like to be featured in her column or Life in the Limo please email editor@RHLifestyle.com.

My plan for high-end resort destinations included a few nights at the La Valencia where we would have afternoon tea and then a few nights at “The Del” on Coronado Island where we would lounge in the spa and then have Sunday brunch in the beautiful Crown Room. None of which happened. Well, back to the whole it’s the journey, not the destination … none of my plans worked out as planned! First of all, the matching outfits made for A LOT of luggage. Thank goodness

Southwest airlines allows two large bags free, plus we had rolling carry-ons, purses, and had to wear a couple of the hats that were far too large to pack. Upon arriving in San Diego, I had not yet secured our hotel reservations and got shut out of “The Del” and the La Valencia. I had no choice but to leave my mother in a chair at baggage claim guarding our 47 pieces of luggage while I frantically stepped outside and started speed dialing hotels that I found in a local magazine. Finally, I scored a reservation at a tiki-looking resort called the Kona Kai (resortkonakai.com). I also had not yet connected with our limo driver, so we were off to the tiki place in an Uber. I assumed this would be for one night while we regrouped for our luxury resorts. Kona Kai is located on Shelter Island, many of you have probably heard of Harbor Island. I have been a frequent San Diego visitor my entire life and have NEVER heard of Shelter Island. This is truly a hidden gem. Our Uber driver was a little confused about the exact address of the hotel but once I saw the Tiki building I assured him this was the place. The resort did not yet have my reservation but since I made it just minutes before, Shelter Island is only 10 minutes from the airport, this was quite forgivable especially when I asked for the best room which was a lovely suite with a back patio and lawn overlooking the Marina. My mother and I quickly assessed that we were overlooking many BILLIONS of dollars of boats. It was exquisite. I no longer cared about the La Valencia or “The Del”. Mom and I had found our new home and outpost for the week. The front desk suggested the Bali Hai, a 5 minute Uber, for lunch. Wowed by the knock your sox off views of the entire bay

you can dine on wonderful Polynesian treats and you absolutely must have the Mai Tai, but just one because they can knock your sox off more than the view. The next day we Ubered, still no limo, up the coast for lunch at the wonderful L’Auberge Del Mar Hotel (laubergedelmar.com), with more breathtaking views and good champagne! Then hat shopping, yes we bought more hats and then more shopping at Del Mar Plaza where we left the Dusty Rose boutique with hand-embroidered matching Mother-Daughter coats. We ditched our original Ranunculus Fields outfits and agreed we must wear these instead. If you are in La Jolla, Georges Ocean Terrace (georgesatthecove.com) for lunch, located on the third floor, is a must. Really one of the iconic open-air restaurants for views of La Jolla cove. After ordering the Mussels Mariniere with melted leeks, crème fraîche and grilled sourdough I excused myself to find the lady’s room. It is located on the ground level. Remember dear readers … it is all about the journey, not the destination! To my delight on the second floor is a small but spectacular jewelry store, Bella Jolla (thebellajolla.com). I thought I would take a quick peek and do a little pre-shopping, vetting the place for my mom who is a jewelry queen. I never got to the lady’s room and invited another jewelry buyer, my new friend Kathleen, to join us upstairs for Mojitos.

Later that day … Hafed the jeweler is now our new best friend and when you visit he will be yours too. We spent hours trying on the most exquisite jewels all fit for a Mother’s Day queen. We left with stunning gems and forever stunning friends. Yes, amazing readers, I am here to assure you it is the journey. Hopefully you can enjoy it with your Mother just like I did. Go forth and find your own hidden gems and here are a few places to start.

P.S. – I realized upon check-out I never checked in to the Kona Kai, I instead stopped at the first tiki place I saw, Island Palms Hotel and Marina (islandpalms.com). Both resorts are fabulous. Check in to either one. Rachell Hall is an author/photographer/health and beauty expert/food and wine enthusiast and world class adventurer. 2022 PORSCHE 911 GTS The perfect sports car to reward success BY JIM PRUETER

VITAL STATS: 2022 Porsche 911 GTS Base Price: $136,700

It’s early morning and I’m on the Apache Trail, a two-lane blacktop highway in central Arizona. The road opens up with a rare straightaway for the passing zone. Just ahead of me, a wide, smooth hairpin curve comes into view as I negotiate one of the countless hills and dips that open into a seemingly endless serving of S-curves carved into the side of cactus-forested mountains and chiseled desert canyons. And, by a miraculous stroke of good fortune, I’m behind the wheel of a dialed up $159,000 Porsche 911 GTS, paddle downshifting the silky-smooth 8-speed PDK automatic transmission, with sweet, melodic notes emanating from the powerful 6-cylinder engine. Rolling out of the curve and onto the gas unleashes the massive force of twin-turbocharged 420 lb-ft of torque, forcing me back into the bucket seat as the speedometer ticks up with ludicrous rapidity. What ensues is what driving should be like for enthusiasts: precision performance that few, if any other, sports cars,

92

can achieve. It’s a joyous experience behind the wheel of perhaps the finest sports coupe in the world, where each element of the vehicle — from raw power and acceleration, triggerfish handling, bolstered seats and massive brakes — is an endless reward. In the 911 model lineup, there’s the Carrera, Carrera S and GTS—driven here—that can come in standard rear-wheel drive or optional all-wheel drive and your choice of hardtop coupe, a Targa or a convertible. Above the GTS is the outrageous GTS Turbo and finally, the track-tuned GT3. The GTS sits in the middle, hitting the “just right” sweet spot. The Carrera seems too soft and luxurious, and the GT3 is a bit too track-focused for daily use. The 911 GTS is a true sports car: incredibly fast, exceptionally fun. There are fantastic exhaust notes, and it handles wonderfully. This is a luxury good that truly performs and allows you to eke out every ounce of joy and driving pleasure.

Price as Tested: $159,000 Fuel Economy: 18/23 mpg city/ highway Engine-transmission: 3.0-L twin-turbocharged, 473-hp flat 6, paired with either an 8-speed automatic or 7-speed manual shift transmission Seating: 2 Fab Features: Unmatched performance and handling capability Impeccable fit and finish with no cost-cutting Adaptive sport seats

VIVA LAS VEGAS Enjoy Sin City’s newest attractions in style

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

One of the best things about Las Vegas is that the city is always changing. There’s guaranteed to be new hotels, restaurants and other attractions every time you visit. Take a closer look at some of the newest places and up-and-coming spots that you can check out next time you’re in Sin City. For example, Nobu Hotel Caesars Palace, the luxury boutique hotel within the iconic Las Vegas resort, recently debuted 182 redesigned guest rooms and suites after completing a multimillion-dollar refresh. Yes, Nobu does refer to the famous Japanese restaurant that has a location in Scottsdale. Nobu Hospitality, the global lifestyle brand founded by Nobu Matsuhisa, Robert De Niro and Meir Teper, is behind this hotel. The world’s first Nobu Hotel now features a more modern, residential feel with design inspiration from kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold epoxy. Specifically, rooms will have a quartzite coffee table with a gold base and cracked kintsugi effects. Suites also will be outfitted with new furniture, rugs and flooring. Caesars Entertainment also has added newly renovated suites to its exclusive collection of luxury accommodations across its portfolio of resorts. In addition to Caesars Palace, this includes Nobu, The Cromwell, Bally’s, Planet Hollywood, Paris Las Vegas, The Flamingo, Harrah’s Las Vegas and Rio Las Vegas. In total, the brand debuted 2,000 epic suites and villas between the resorts, including sleek, multi-room suites to stylish two-story duplexes and grand villas spanning more than 11,000 square feet. Among the most coveted rooms are Caesars Palace’s sprawling and private villas. Floor plans span an average of 8,800 square feet, and prices start at $15,000 per night. These opulent villas feature imported marble floors, private elevators and hand-painted wall murals. Similarly, the boutique Nobu Hotel is home to the exquisite three-bedroom, 10,300-square-foot Nobu Villa. Designed by David Rockwell and Rockwell Group, the $35,000 per night Nobu Villa is the hotel’s only rooftop villa that offers sweeping views of the Strip. The culinary adventures across the region continue to evolve as well. In 2021, Food Network star Bobby Flay unveiled Amalfi by Bobby Flay at Caesars Palace. This rustic-yet-elegant Mediterranean eatery features a bold menu including shellfish fritto misto with Meyer lemon aioli and pistachio pesto and squid ink fettuccine with lobster, shrimp and Fra Diavolo sauce. Joining Flay in the coming weeks is lifestyle icon Martha Stewart. Located in Paris Las Vegas, The Bedford by Martha Stewart is her first-ever restaurant and was even designed by Stewart herself. She drew inspiration from her famed country farmhouse in Bedford, New York. The Bedford offers dinner, weekend brunch and holiday

menus. The menu will be sourced from local purveyors and some of Stewart’s personal favorites including the Las Vegas Farmers Market, Dartagnan Inc., Urbani Truffles, Roe Caviar, Frog Hollow Farm, Jasper Hill Farm and Vermont Creamery. Likewise, James Beard Award-winning pastry chef Dominique Ansel is also set to bring his creative culinary talents to Caesars Palace Las Vegas with the opening of Dominique Ansel Las Vegas early this summer. Ansel is perhaps best known for creating the Cronut. Restaurateur, television star and philanthropist Lisa Vanderpump has brought her signature design aesthetic to Paris Las Vegas for her second Las Vegas venue, Vanderpump à Paris. Vanderpump à Paris opened in March and features delectable dishes, whimsical and unique cocktails, and a lush, elaborate atmosphere with eclectic, Parisianinspired decor. And for those planning further ahead: Legendary New York steak house Peter Luger is slated to arrive at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas before year’s end. The Michelin-starred Peter Luger opened in 1887 and is commonly known as New York City’s original steak house. It will be the first U.S. location outside of New York. Entertainment abounds as amply as epicurean adventures. Twelve-time Grammy winner John Legend kicks off his residency Love In Las Vegas at Zappos Theater at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on April 22. The performance will feature Legend’s full band and will be a vibrant celebration of love and coming together. Chris Rock will also bring his newest stand-up show to The Colosseum at Caesars Palace this spring and summer. RuPaul’s Drag Race Live, an original production based on the Emmy Awardwinning competition reality show starring drag queens, is playing nightly at The Flamingo. Looking for something off Strip? The Mob Museum completed its first major renovation, which includes two floors of brand-new exhibition spaces. The Prohibition-era exhibition, The Underground, is in the museum’s basement. The Underground visitors are surrounded by artifacts and stories from the era while they learn about bootlegging in the working distillery and enjoy Roaring ’20s cocktails in the speakeasy. On the first floor, Organized Crime Today focuses on the modernization and evolution of organized crime in the present day. The recently opened Firearm Training Simulator and Crime Lab Experience showcases the methods employed by law enforcement to apprehend and prosecute criminals and their organizations. Given all of the new places in town, Sin City is constantly proving that whether you’re into gaming or not, Las Vegas is always a sure bet. So Scottsdale! April ‘22

SAKÉ SOARS

Historically ceremonial beverage in Asia booming across Arizona

Saké (or sake), Japan’s national beverage, is believed to date back to at least the third century. While it was primarily used for formal ceremonies and holidays in Japan for centuries, it has been growing in popularity as a beverage category in the United States for more than a decade. Although many refer to sake as “rice wine,” it is in its own beverage category and closer to beer in its production than wine. Gluten-free, sulfite-free, tannin-free, low in acid and lower in sugar than most other alcohols, here are some of the best bottles for sale in the local market right now.

Hakutsuru Sayuri Nigori Made by Hakutsuru Sake Brewing Co. in Kobe, a city on the Osaka Bay in central Japan, this light and unfiltered offering opens with a nose of cream, cherry blossom and white grape that’s inside a light pink colored bottle. It has a semi-sweet flavor with subtle fruit to the taste and pairs well with grilled meats, spicy dishes and most desserts. $25. Eiko Fuji Ban Ryu Honjozo Ban Ryu means “10,000 ways” in Japanese. The name is meant to showcase the versatility of the spirit and answer this question: How many ways is one saké different from another? A versatile, exceptional one of the 10,000 expressions, this stunner starts with a very delicate fruity aroma, most notably black currant, and is both crisp and clean on the palate. This sake is a perfect pair for ramen. $17.99. G Joy Junmai Ginjo Genshu Made by America’s first commercially successful craft saké brewery, Oregon’s SakéOne, this blend is made exclusively from California Calrose rice. This Gold Medalist at the World Saké Challenge features bold aromas of fruit and a velvety body with cherry and pepper notes. Pair it with Thai cuisine. $20 Arizona Sake Junmai Ginjo Handmade in Holbrook, Arizona, by First-Grade Master Sake Brewer Atsuo Sakurai, Arizona Sake is the first-ever locally made saké. The Gold Medalist in the 2018 Sake Competition in Tokyo for bottles made outside of Japan, this varietal is dry with an ever-so-slight bite and contains the stems of a desert plant nicknamed “Navajo tea.” $24.99 Joto Junmai Made by the Eiko Fuji Brewery in Tsuruoka City on the northwest coast in Japan and led by the 13th generation of the original company’s founders, expect to taste and smell rich notes of plum. Anticipate a crisp acidity on the finish. It pairs best with cheeses– especially those with nutty characteristics – and grilled pork. $29 SOTO Super Premium Junmai Daiginjo Sake The flagship varietal of the SOTO Brewery, this sake is made of finely polished specialty rice and pristine mountain water from Japan’s Niigata prefecture. Smooth and crisp with a slightly floral nose, look forward to ample notes of cucumber, melon and a hint of strawberries and cream in every sip. Pair with a wet- or dry-aged steak. $39.99

At T. Cook’s at the Royal Palms Resort and Spa, Executive Chef Lee Hillson delights in asking his culinary team to stretch their epicurean imaginations. Among his most recent challenges: showcasing high-quality ingredients in a simple yet thoughtful way to create a seasonally inspired meal. Enter the sous chef team’s Garlic Herbed Lamb Chops ($MP) just in time for spring. It starts with imported Colorado lamb, which is butchered in-house before being rubbed down with a Dijon and garlic blend. Cooked to order, the lamb is grilled, brought to temperature and rested before being sliced down the center of the four bones to offer a double-bone presentation. The robust result is served with risotto, winter rainbow chard, jus and gremolata made using exquisite French Terre Bormane Aulente balsamic white vinegar and shallots. T. Cook’s, 5200 E. Culinary Dropout hits a (bourbon) bullseye with Pistols at Dawn

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

Each cocktail menu under the Fox Restaurants Concepts’ umbrella is guided by one main principle: freshness first. “Every day, no matter which of our brands you visit, you will see us juicing fresh fruits and infusing our own syrups and spirits,” says Aubrey Mansene, beverage director at Fox Restaurant Concepts. To earn a place as a signature cocktail on a Fox menu, there must be a story or inspiration behind the recipe, according to Mansene. Pistols at Dawn ($12) by Culinary Dropout has one of the best. “Historically when two gentlemen had an argument in public, even when drinking bourbon, they kept it civil,” says Mansene. “Instead of carrying on, they agreed to ‘pistols at dawn,’ literally meeting at daybreak with guns.” A visual interpretation of the early morning fight, the base spirit in the cocktail is – naturally – bourbon. “With a name like Pistols at Dawn, there was no other choice than to use Bulleit Bourbon,” says Mansene, who combines the spirit with Ancho Reyes liqueur and lemon juice to add an earthy bite. To balance these ingredients, ginger agave syrup is then added. It is made daily by soaking, dicing and fine mesh straining ginger before combining it with agave and water. “After a hard shake with ice to activate all the flavors, we strain the contents into a hurricane glass before adding a float of Louis Martini Cabernet, which adds to the depth of flavor and looks a bit like the aftermath of the fight,” says Mansene. A lighter take on a bourbon cocktail, there is a nice play between sweet, sour, vegetal and spicy in every sip. Culinary Dropout, 15125 N. Scottsdale Road; 480.653.9701; and 7135 E. CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Josh Ivey of Craft 64

Josh Ivey is the chef-owner of Craft 64, where he takes pride in sourcing from local organic producers to create a menu of New American and Italian dishes, wood-fired pizzas, bruschetta and indulgent desserts.

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

What inspired you to cook? I was initially inspired by my mother, who never shied away from attempting to make Chinese food one night and Brazilian another. Her inspiration was so great that I took a course at the Scottsdale Culinary Institute during high school. Did this lead to cooking professionally? Not immediately, also due to mom. She got me a stock room job with a semiconductor company, and the company quickly encouraged me to study engineering. It led to more than 20 years in that industry before returning to cooking. How did that happen? I began traveling extensively – exploring the world one bite at a time – as well as collecting wine. Always in search of the perfect pairing, I began studying with the Court of Masters of Sommeliers and cooking for friends. By 2013, I started my culinary journey and opened Craft 64 in 2015. Tell us about some of the local producers you work with? We use Noble Granary, Queen Creek Olive Oil Mill, McClendon Organic Select and Green on Purpose, which provides foraged ingredients. I also travel to Artisanal Wine Cellars in Oregon a few times a year to hand-make some of our wines, and we partner with SunUp Brewing to brew our own proprietary line of beer. What is a “must-try” on the menu? Do not miss the Aji Pizza, which is inspired by a dear friend, who is Mexican, and her husband, who is Peruvian. To make, I pair ricotta, spinach and fennel sausage with onions that I smoke for at least two hours. The secret ingredient is aji sauce, a Peruvian condiment. Except I substitute its traditional Amarillo peppers for jalapeños. What would readers be surprised to know about you? While I have cut down my wine collection to about 600 bottles, I recently earned my Advanced Sommelier designation. Craft 64, 6922 E. Main St., Scottsdale; 480.946.0542; www.craft64.com.

Two Wash Ranch Chicken Roulade

Hearth ‘61 Chicken is the star of this savory dish. It features sausage made from thigh meat and surrounded by chicken breast with the skin still attached. The entire roulade is poached, bathed in ice, deep-fried and served with leeks, roasted cauliflower and cauliflower sauce. The chicken is sourced locally from Two Wash Ranch in New River. At Two Wash Ranch, farmer Dave Jordan raises chickens, ducks, geese and peafowl in a cage-free environment without any hormones or antibiotics. He delivers his poultry fresh to local restaurant partners, resulting in a more sustainable operation and better-quality food. $37. www.mountainshadows.com

Pan Roasted Faroe Salmon

Ember Salmon from the Faroe Islands—an archipelago in the North Atlantic Ocean--thrive in their natural environment, roaming freely to feed off the abundant natural food sources. They develop layers of healthy fats by feasting on nutrient-rich capelin, herring and eel and derive their familiar color naturally by consuming a diet in carotenoids, primarily from microalgae and shrimp. At Ember, the team ever-so-gently pan sears the salmon before pairing with velvety cauliflower and enhancing with pungent sweet green garlic. Nestled to the side are spring onions and English peas. Tendrils top off the dish. $40. www.wekopacasinoresort.com

J&G Chopped Salad

The food that we eat not only affects our personal health and wellness, but also the world we live in. With Earth Day on April 22, it is the perfect time to shine a light on local restaurants whose chefs take pride in sourcing local, sustainable and/or organic ingredients. Pecans in Arizona are both naturally bigger and meatier than pecans in other states thanks to Tucson’s sunny days and cool nights. $16. www.jgsteakhousescottsdale.com

Los Sombreros The locally owned Mexican favorite takes great pride in its American Humane Certified chicken, which is raised without antibiotics and fed a vegetarian diet. In this variation, the chicken is sautéed with spinach and then covered in a hand-made chipotle crema sauce - with cream from a 100-year-old farm in Stanfield, Arizona – before being topped with a cilantro crema, tomatoes, onions, chopped cilantro and queso

SAVOR MEXICO CITY

Call Her Martina Barra + Cocina is coming to the Scottsdale Waterfront

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

Siblings Elisa, Paola and Pedro Moreno grew up splitting their time between Hermosillo in the northwestern Mexican state of Sonora and Mexican capital Mexico City, the most populous city in North America. During their youth, the Moreno children loved learning about different types of Mexican gastronomy from their grandmother, Martina, who they affectionately call the first foodie they ever knew. Decades later, the children were honored to open Call Her Martina Barra + Cocina on the Scottsdale Waterfront. The restaurant is slated to open in late March. The restaurant is a tribute to their grandmother and a celebration of authentic Mexico City cuisine. The upscale eatery Is meant to transport guests to the capital city as if they’re dining in one of the chic region’s trendiest restaurants. The 2,297-square-foot restaurant is striking. Notably, there are images of females from throughout La Época de Oro del Cine Mexican – the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema – adorning most walls. Roughly from the mid-1930s to the

mid-1950s, the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema started during World War II when commercial filming declined across the United States and Europe. During this time, Mexican filmmakers and performers exploded in popularity worldwide, especially in the United States. The beverage menu is a showcase of agave spirits. On the menu, guests can find tequilas, mezcal and bacanora, considered by many as the link between its two spirited cousins. Bacanora is a type of mezcal –an umbrella term that describes agave-based spirits that are fire-smoked or roasted before fermentation – native to agave in Sonora, but without the smoky bite. In addition to tasting flights, there are also signature agave-based cocktails. Drink options include When She Went to Tulum, featuring Coconut Bahnez Mezcal, coconut syrup, lime and agave and Maria Bonita, a delight concoction of Tequila Corcel Blanco, Gran Ponche Mexicano, agave, lemon and egg whites. Diners also can enjoy wines by the glass and bottle, beers, including Mexican imports, and a full bar. When it comes to food, the menu is small but mighty. It focuses on exceptional ingredients and true authentic recipes beloved in Mexico City and its surrounding states. Expect elevated dishes such as short rib al tinto, short rib slow roasted with a mouth-watering sauce made from red wine and piloncillo, a smoky and fudgy natural sweetener typically made by boiling cane sugar and then pouring it into a mold to harden; pulpo al grill, charred octopus with squid ink-infused risotto and a citrus aioli; and mini street elote, corn on the cob with chili aioli and cotija cheese. On Friday and Saturday night, a DJ will be spinning tropical house music with a hint of Latin flavor. Plans to add happy hour and possibly brunch are in the works. Call Her Martina, 7135 E. Camelback Road; 253.335.3332; www.callhermartina. com.
