Disclosure by seller of buried pets in backyard

Q:

My mother and father bought their Arcadia home more than 30 years ago. They now want to “downsize” to a Scottsdale townhome. I grew up in that Arcadia home, and we always had pets such as German Shepherds and Siamese cats, but also pets such as hamsters and goldfish. All of those pets were buried in our back yard. Do my mother and father now have to disclose to a buyer that our family pets are buried in the backyard? A:

Under Arizona law a seller, and any real estate broker, has to disclose to the buyer any material and adverse fact relating to the home. In other words, if a fact is material and adverse, it must be disclosed. If a fact is not material and adverse, why not disclose it?

Finally, if a seller questions whether or not to disclose, the seller should ask: If I was buying my own home, would I want disclosure? For example, if you were a buyer of your parents’ home, wouldn’t you want disclosure and then be able to explain to your fouryear old daughter why she found the femur of a German Shepherd in her sand box!

The famous United Kingdom-originated saying says “April showers brings May flowers” but in Arizona’s case, we’re trading rain for sunshine and flowers for heat. But, let’s forget about the looming triple digits for now and focus on the beautiful weather part of things.

Spring truly has sprung and we’re soaking up all that it has to over – great alfresco everything. From outdoor events where the spirits are flowing (page 55) to adventures in Northern Arizona Page (page 54), there’s something for everyone. Or, perhaps you’re looking to sit back, relax and enjoy a nice cocktail or meal this month. Our debut feature, Perfect Patios (page 60), is pretty self-explanatory: amazing local venues to enjoy the weather. We’re breaking it all down depending on what you’re looking for, whether that’s somewhere for a romantic rendezvous, a buzzy brunch, a place to catch the sunset during golden hour, somewhere to check out a great view, or a spot that’s the talk of the town.

Speaking of the talk of the town, Celebrity Fight Night’s 30th anniversary Emerald Ball is coming up this month at Scottsdale Fairmont Princess. Entertainer extraordinaire Joey Fatone will emcee the event and is giving us the scoop (page 38) on what to expect and why he fell in love with the cause, in addition to talking about his extensive music (the *NSYNC fan in me is very excited for this one!) and acting career, his current tour and what’s coming up next for him.

Additional highlights this month include a look at two new restaurants: Mon Cheri (page 97) and Beginner’s Luck (page 114), both guaranteed to be on most Scottsdale residents’ must-visit list. Music makes the world go round for Phoenix Symphony’s Tammy Rocker

Tammy Rocker is poised to create more magical experiences for the Phoenix Symphony.

A vibrant voice for Phoenix Symphony, Tammy Rocker’s passion for the arts is the driving force in her new role as senior vice president and chief advancement officer. This is Rocker’s second go-around with the symphony, which is a major gem of the local

arts community. In her original role as chief development officer of the symphony from 2016 to 2018, she oversaw the development department, wrote foundation grants, created sponsorships, worked with donors, and helped implement special events with her team.

While Rocker left the symphony after two years to work with the American Lung Association, the Symphony’s spirit never left her.

“I am delighted to jump back in,” she says.

When rhapsodizing about the newest season, which launched March 18, Rocker describes it as beautifully curated and magical. “We have something for everyone. Whether it’s romance, pops, something for the family, or Broadway, we cover it all,” she says. “The symphony is an incredible place to work; we are very collaborative. The musicians are incredibly talented, and I’ve gotten to know them very well over the years through donor meetings and observing rehearsals.”

One of the events Rocker is proudest of is Savor the Symphony, the Symphony’s signature fundraiser, which will take place May 7. Guests will have the intimate experience of watching the orchestra rehearse for 45 minutes to an hour, plus dining on a sumptuous lunch created by a master chef. Additional highlights include live music, silent and live auctions, and a bar.

The Starting Point

Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Rocker moved to Phoenix at age 10, later attending Arcadia High School and Northern Arizona University for communications courses. She soon found her way to a nonprofit leadership program at University of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which segued into a career at the American Heart Association. In her new capacity, she marketed the ever-popular Jump Rope for Heart program, the first in a string of successful campaigns. “When I became the regional vice president for the program, I had a team of youth market directors who worked with gym teachers and principals in several states to explore ways for children to raise money for the American Heart Association (AHA) while participating in a serving learning opportunity. We were the top performers two years in a row during that time.”

As a senior vice president at the AHA’s California office, Rocker accelerated her vision by leading a team of 25 individuals to create well-known events such as the Heart Ball, Go Red for Women, and the Heart Walk. “As senior vice president, I managed 25 people, recruited participants and collected money for large events,” she says.

In her current role, Rocker thrives on being a buoyant cheerleader for the Symphony. “There is a profound difference between attending a live concert and just listening to a recording,” she says. “There is sensory stimulus, intense concentration, physical involvement of the musicians, the drama of the conductor, and the fact the audience is all live. It connects us emotionally, and I love being part of it all.”

Looking Ahead, on October 12 the Symphony will host a gala called A Wicked Night at the Symphony, an elegant black-tie event. It will include a VIP reception, dinner and dancing, and an exclusive symphony performance.

Beyond the Symphony

Rocker and her husband are the parents of five grown sons, who were originally interested in bands while younger but went on individual paths later on. Currently, Rocker has a variety of hobbies and interests that round out her busy career. A voracious reader, she reads three to four books a week, bicycles and tends

her garden of tomatoes, basil, and sunflowers.

Music has always been and always will be a constant theme in Rocker’s life. “People learn that I work for the symphony and assume I like only classical, but that is not the case at all,” she says. “I have very varied taste in music, not just classical.”

Case in point: Rocker has a penchant for all types of rock music, especially New York punk bands, like Patty Smith. “My husband and I saw her a few years ago in Los Angeles at the Ace Theater,” she says. “She was 70 years old and jumping off the stage!”

At the other end of the music spectrum is country music, which Rocker discovered after watching George & Tammy, a miniseries. “I have now become the biggest George Jones fan on the face of the earth,” she says.

Rocker and her husband enjoy spinning vinyl at their second home in Pine and have added a collection of Jone’s old albums. “We’ve always played old classic rock, and now we have a new addition to our collection,” she says.

Rocker also has a soft spot for jazz, especially Ella Fitzgerald. “I listen to everyone and everything,” she says. “There is no music I have never liked. My kids have listened to a lot of music my husband and I grew up with, and it has grown on them.”

When the couple lived in Los Angeles, they saw many shows at the Greek Theatre in Griffith Park, such as Crosby, Stills and Nash. “Phoenix has a lot of great performances as well; that’s one of the reasons we love it here so much. We go to between 10 and 15 concerts a year.”

Sommelier-turned-perfumer Ethan Turner creates poetry through his luxury brands

From his days curating exquisite wine selections as a sommelier to crafting bespoke fragrances, Ethan Turner weaves the art of storytelling into all his professional pursuits. This isn’t surprising, given his background in creative writing at Drake University, where he aspired to become a screenwriter. Fate, however, had other plans for him.

“After shopping for a personal fragrance one day and having no luck, I decided I would create one for myself,” he says. “My friend suggested I make one for him and that he would pay me for it. That moment kicked off my career.”

Shortly after this, Turner’s first brand, MOI Fragrances (www.moi-fragrances.com), came to life. Turner aimed to offer consumers a luxury bespoke fragrance experience without the hefty price tag. Since its inception, MOI Fragrances has expanded its scope, collaborating with various brands, celebrities and businesses.

“[MOI Fragrances] manages 17 different fragrance brands and has evolved into more of a manufacturing house than a bespoke fragrance experience,” Turner says.

Expanding his perfumery repertoire, he pursued studies at France’s renowned ISIPCA. Despite having created over 500 unique fragrances up until this point, Turner had yet to create his own story in a signature scent. This realization sparked the birth of his second brand, Empyrean Parfums (www.empyreanparfums. com), which became a deeply personal project.

“I’ve always been a poet, and I wrote haiku throughout my [studies abroad] as I reflected on life, love and religion. Each fragrance embodies my struggles and eventual return to Christianity,” he says.

Empyrean Parfums will debut its inaugural unisex fragrance AIA (pronounced Gaia), a representation of Mother Earth’s creation, this June at Scottsdale Andaz Resort & Bungalows. The event will activate all five senses through a variety of earth, wind, fire, and water elements, like performances and cuisine. Event proceeds will help build a perfume garden that conserves local aromatic flowers.

“This is the first reveal of my story to the world,” he says. “I’ve received wonderful compliments on the scent from some of the greatest perfumers in modern times, but it’s a new project and new space. I’m feeling excited, and a bit nervous!”

Peripheral Neuropathy: The Next Step

WHAT’S NEW WITH PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY?

I believe we may have found a missing link in treating peripheral neuropathy. For those suffering it may be because the smaller, microvascular vessels are not functioning properly. There may be a lack of blood flow between the smaller vessels and the diseased nerves.

WHY IS BLOOD FLOW BETWEEN SMALL VESSELS AND NERVES IMPORTANT?

Blood contains the oxygen and nutrients your tissues need to survive. Good circulation is necessary to get the blood down to your feet. Once it is there, smaller vessels work to deliver oxygen and nutrients to your nerves and take away carbon dioxide. This exchange of oxygen and waste is vital. For it to happen, we need a healthy microvasculature.

WHAT IS MICROVASCULATURE?

Microvasculature contains small blood vessels (arterioles, capillaries, and venules). It is responsible for supplying nutrients and regulating blood flow. When there is a breakdown in the system the effects are far reaching.

HOW HAS TREATMENT CHANGED?

Now there is a new treatment intended to promote healthy microvasculature. It’s a sterile, human tissue allograft which replaces or supplements the damaged microvascular tissue in your body with the hope to prompt it to start producing new cells.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The allograft is made up of microvascular extracellular matrix which contains arterioles, capillaries, and venules. Restoration of microvascular tissue should improve local blood which is necessary for healthy tissue function and to regenerate tissue. Once improved, the body can start the healing process to help repair damaged tissue.

WHAT IS THE GOAL?

We want to get more blood flow to the legs and feet so healing can begin. The goal of this new treatment is to do just that. I believe it is one of the most promising treatments for peripheral neuropathy today.

When she isn’t helping clients, Galt loves to travel, something she did often growing up as the daughter of late Oscar-winning actress Anne Baxter (the granddaughter of famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright). She has journeyed to places like France, Nepal and Australia, to name a few. These travels have informed her own design style.

“My personal style is very driven by original art that I’ve picked up in my travels, as well as from artists I’ve met along the path. Every piece has a memory of a time, a place, an experience.”

Josh Mundy blends his Midwestern roots with a refined sense of style

A Valley transplant with Midwest charm, Josh Mundy’s fashion journey has evolved from small-town simplicity to a sophisticated blend of clean lines and classic comfort. As the director of philanthropy for Phoenix Children’s Foundation, Mundy connects people to the mission of advancing pediatric care while making a statement with his personal style.

With a style that he describes as “clean, classic and layered,” Mundy’s blend of comfort and classic elements sets him apart in a world often dominated by fleeting trends. “My signature look is a relic from my days in the Midwest – a comfortable sweater and a pair of Levi’s finished off with my Nikes,” he says. “Everyone needs a good pair of jeans and Levi’s still does that better than anyone else in the game.”

When it comes to influences, Mundy points to Derek Guy (@dieworkwear on X, formally known as Twitter) as the biggest inspiration for his style. Derek's emphasis on the importance of a good tailor taught him that a well-fitted outfit can enhance confidence and elevate any look. “Nothing makes you feel better than an outfit that fits you correctly,” Mundy says.

What will we see you in on weekends versus workdays? Complete opposite ends of the spectrum. During the week you’ll find me suited and booted, but come Saturday that switch turns off and it’s Levi’s and a fitted T-shirt.

What is your most prized possession in your closet? My most prized possession in my closet is a ring my grandfather gave me when I was a kid. Even though it doesn’t fit me, I can still look at it whenever I want to remember his influence on me as a man.

What are your favorite colors, patterns, styles and trends? I try not to follow trends to closely, by the time I’m on any particular bandwagon it’s already fallen to the wayside. Because of that I typically stick to blues, any earth tones and burgundy. Style wise, I’m most comfortable in a classic black T-shirt and jeans.

Patty Withycombe’s vibrant personality transcends not only through her involvement with the Arizona Humane Society (AHS), but also in her eclectic and lively fashion choices. Over the years, Withycombe has gracefully shed the constraints of fashion rules and embraced a style uniquely her own, filled with fun styles, bright colors and bold patterns.

While she draws inspiration from icons like Ralph Lauren, the animal advocate enjoys exploring the offerings of Anthropologie, Alice & Olivia, and Joie, appreciating the fit and quality of their designs. “Most of my clothes are casual – that goes well with my lifestyle. Nothing fussy ever. I am crazy for shoes, too; they must be stylish but comfortable,” she says.

Pink and purple, her favorite colors, find a place alongside patterned wide-leg pants, sequins and her favored handbags. “A great bag is a non-negotiable,” she says. “And my multicolored sequin jumpsuit is so fun to wear. I love sequins!”

By co-chairing the capital campaign for the newly opened AHS Papago Park Campus, Withycombe seamlessly intertwines the worlds of style and compassion, proving that the heart can beat just as passionately for both runway trends and the well-being of four-legged friends.

How has your style evolved over the years? I have always loved clothes and fashion, but when I was younger, I thought I had to follow the rules. Now I make my own rules.

What is your favorite store? I rarely shop brick and mortar. I like to shop online and return by mail if it doesn’t work. I especially like Me & Em from the UK, Heimstone from Paris, Anthropologie, Dolce Vita shoes, and another really fun online boutique for shoes is Charlotte Stone.

Can you share some fashion advice?

I think all women of all ages and sizes should look for clothes that are fun and make them feel like a million without costing a million.

SINGER AND ACTOR EXTRAORDINAIRE JOEY FATONE HOSTS CELEBRITY FIGHT NIGHT’S 30TH ANNIVERSARY EMERALD BALL

Joey Fatone was born in New York and attended school in Florida, but he’s always felt most at home on stage.

Growing up, Fatone watched his father perform in a 1960s doo-wop group. Some of the biggest musical influences of his childhood came from that era, from The Temptations to The Delfonics to The Jesters.

“When I was in ninth grade, that was where I wanted to be – in an acapella group,” says Fatone, who formed a group with three other high school friends (one of whom was Luis Fonsi, who went on to top charts with Despacito). This was also around the time that Fatone began his acting career – or at least tried to.

“They did three plays my freshman year, and I wanted to audition but I was so scared. For the first two, I chickened out. I didn’t even go to the auditions. I finally said, ‘You know what? Screw it. If I screw up, I screw up.’”

He went to the audition, got the role of Chino in West Side Story, and the rest is history. “I started not caring, in the sense of being fearless. There’s nothing wrong with being a little nervous, but it’s about that adrenaline rush, like going on a rollercoaster.”

As a member of *NSYNC, one of the top-selling boy bands of all time, Fatone helped set and break records, but after that chapter of life came to a close, he had to take a step back and reevaluate what came next. First, he took to Broadway, reconnecting with his love for acting by starring in Rent and appearing in productions of Little Shop of Horrors, The Producers and Rock of Ages. After a handful of movie rolls – including Cousin Angelo in My Big Fat Greek Wedding – it was time for him to take the small screen by storm.

In recent years, Fatone has been an inescapable TV presence, from competing on Dancing with the Stars and The Masked Singer, to hosting of a slew of reality and game shows. While he loved being known as one of the guys from *NSYNC, he welcomed the opportunity to show off his own personality as an entertainer.

“Still to this day, I love that feeling of fear while getting ready to get out there and perform,” he says. “Then you get out there, and you’re fine. You’re happy – it’s your home.”

THE EMERALD BALL

On April 27, Fatone will serve as the emcee of Celebrity Fight Night at Fairmont Scottsdale Princess. The event, which will celebrates its 30th anniversary this year with an Emerald Ball theme, has long been among the Valley’s most treasured fundraising events, attracting a plethora of familiar faces. Headliner Michael Bublé will be joined by returning musical director David Foster, singer-songwriter Katharine McPhee and comedian Caroline Rhea, among countless others.

Fatone, who attended the gala for the first time in 2023, immediately knew he wanted to be adopted into the Celebrity Fight Night (www.celebrityfightnight.org) family. “Last year I was emcee of the first party, which is for celebrities and people who donate. know everybody. It’s basically saying, ‘Hey, thank you for coming, and let’s have a great time.’ It’s such a family vibe.”

This year, Fatone will also host the main charity event, which aims to raise millions to support Gateway for Cancer Research. The nonprofit works to advance early-stage clinical trials for all types of cancer, including rare and underfunded varieties. The overall goal is to help shape a world in which cancer diagnoses are no longer feared.

“What I love about this event is that the money doesn’t go to anything else – 100% of the proceeds, all of the money that’s donated, goes directly to the research,” Fatone says. “Cancer research is something close to my heart. My mother is a survivor of breast cancer. She got it

detected early, went through chemo, and everything is all right, but some people aren’t so fortunate.”

TOUR & MORE

Further proof that Fatone can never be found too far from the stage, the singer recently began touring with Backstreet Boy AJ McLean, kicking off in March to such great reception that new dates were added for May, June and July. It’s a more casual show, Fatone says, and no two are the same, quite literally – in addition to some

tried-and-true hits, every night they spin a wheel to randomly determine which songs they’ll sing.

“AJ’s a huge performer, like me. I just thought it’d be a great idea to do something like this, something fairly intimate where we can interact, talk about things we don’t normally talk about, sing songs we’ve never sang, do mashups and give thanks to our fans. It’s funny because usually there’s an agenda of some sort – and AJ does have new music that he wants to get out –but me? I’m just here to have fun!”

Part of it is about setting an example for his two daughters, who – though ever-supportive of their old man – wouldn’t exactly say they’re his biggest fans. Last year, when *NSYNC reunited to create new music together for the first time in more than twenty years, the result, Better Place, received rave reviews as the lead single from the soundtrack of Trolls Band Together.

“We watched the movie in the house, and my kids were like, ‘All right, cool.’ They love it and they support it, but they think, ‘Whatever, it’s just Dad.’ It doesn’t really interest them, which is hilarious. I love that position they have, where it’s not really a big deal to them. I don’t want it to ever be a big deal.”

Still, giving them a peek behind the curtain is one of Fatone’s great joys. Though nothing is set in stone at the moment, he’d jump at the opportunity to bring his girls along on a reunion tour with *NSYNC.

“I think the highlight of my life would be showing my kids what I’d done to that magnitude back in the day. It’s mayhem, and I’d love to bring them with me so they could see what I did when I was my oldest daughter’s age.”

The ability of these well-loved boy bands to continue filling stadiums over two decades later, Fatone says, is testament to the power of nostalgia.

“It was a great time in fans’ lives. Times are tough, and it’s great having an outlet where you can watch and sing along with your favorite group, that you used to listen to on TRL. They were 10, 11 years old and now they’re in their 20s, 30s or 40s. Some of them have kids. They want to relive their childhood and show their kids something that was important to them when they were young. It’s the same way I want to show my kids what I did.”

At the end of the day, entertaining in all its forms is about telling a story, and the story Fatone wants to tell – especially for his family – is one of perseverance.

“The same fundamental values that I learned growing up, I try to put to my kids – that failure is fine, it’s how you pick yourself up and do better. If you have a passion, never let it go, and it’s bound to happen at some point. And as my dad always told me – always have clean underwear.”

Paradise Valley-located Cosanti Originals is offering a spring Tile-Making Experience. During the hands-on classes, guests are guided through the tile-making and design process that was developed by The Cosanti Foundation and is used every day by the artisans of Cosanti Originals. Each class – offered April 6, May 4 and June 8 – begins at 10 a.m. with an introductory tour of Cosanti. Then, attendees will form a clay slab, using canvas and a roller, which will be sized, measured and cut into tile pieces. On April 11, The Scottsdale Gallery Association will debut the Small Works, Big Talent Gold Palette ArtWalk. Tee off to fight pediatric cancer at the Tom Londen Memorial Golf Classic

When the Londen family lost their father, Tom, to cancer, they wanted to celebrate his life and legacy in a way that would help others through their battle with the disease. Now in its ninth year, the Tom Londen Memorial Golf Classic raises funds for the Arizona Cancer Foundation for Children (ACFC).

“ACFC’s mission is to provide social, emotional and financial support directly to families managing the health and well-being of a loved one with pediatric cancer,” says Meg Dufour, director of events for ACFC. “With the support of the Londen family and the Tom Londen Golf Classic, ACFC continues to help more families annually.”

In Arizona, one child a day is diagnosed with cancer. Through its three pillars of support – social, emotional, and financial – ACFC helps children and families cope with the challenges that come with fighting the disease. By integrating services, ACFC can help alleviate the burdens that come with pediatric cancer and support the entire family. Last year, the organization helped 370 Arizona families, providing more than $350,000 in direct financial support as well as end-of-life support to 26 families who lost their child to cancer.

“In addition to hosting this yearly event, the Londen family has volunteered their time, donated essentials in times of need, gifted toys to the Sunshine Boutique, sponsored other foundation events, and become part of the ACFC family,” Dufour says.

ACFC offers many programs, such as direct financial assistance for paying rent, utilities, and medical bills; mental health support through professional counseling and K9 therapy; and social support through on-site sunshine experiences.

Leo, ACFC’s certified therapy dog, and his volunteer friends made 419 Sunshine Visits and have attended numerous Sunshine Celebrations, which commemorate milestones like birthdays,

family events, and the end of treatment. By participating in the Tom Londen Memorial Classic, golfers can help ACFC provide these experiences to hundreds of Arizona families.

The event itself starts with a reception at Talking Stick Resort on Friday evening. The reception is free to attend and will include a charity auction, raffle prizes, complimentary hors d’oeuvres, and a cash bar. The scramble-format tournament will take place at the Talking Stick Golf Club on Saturday with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.

Registration for the tournament includes green fees, a cart, practice balls, a breakfast burrito, a post-golf lunch, and a tournament polo. About 250 attendees are expected to attend the reception, with 150 golfers teeing off to support ACFC.

The Kentucky Derby is often called the most exciting two minutes in sports. It’s also America’s oldest sporting event, commemorating 150 years in 2024. While the race itself may be over in a flash, the party lasts all day, especially at The Stella Artois Derby DayClub. It’s the only Kentucky Derby party in Arizona where attendees can watch and wager on a live simulcast of the Kentucky Derby while also enjoying and betting on live local horseracing just a few feet away.

Turf Paradise is the Valley’s only horse racing track, making it a natural spot to host a watch party for the horse race. The event is organized and produced by The Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships.

“After the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships took off, we started looking at other equestrian events where we could bring the same unique approach,” says Jason Rose, founder and owner of both

and The Stella Artois Derby DayClub. “We decided on an elevated Kentucky Derby party experience on the backstretch, on the grass, right by the rail with the polo event energy and panache. There’s nothing like it in the Valley.”

About 1,700 people are expected to attend the event, which has sold out almost every year in its nine-year history.

“When horses aren’t racing right in front of you, we have DJs to listen to, great drinks and food trucks on hand. It really is a boardwalk of cool fashion throughout the day. And, if you are going to celebrate, dress up for, and watch the Kentucky Derby, what better place than with live horse racing before and after the Derby itself,” Rose says. “There is an interaction and energy at The Stella Artois Derby DayClub that doesn’t exist at any other such party, plus the crowd

we have is a great mix, making for great people-watching too.”

There are two VIP experiences at the event. The Sanderson Lincoln Black Label Lounge offers reserved tables on the grass in a trackside tent near the finish line. The Nütrl Vodka Seltzer Pavilion includes reserved tables in an open-air tent that includes a complimentary bucket of Nütrl Vodka Seltzer. The Nütrl Vodka Seltzer Pavilion is near the finish line but farther off the backstretch than the Black Label Lounge. General admission tickets are also available. All experiences include convenient access to betting terminals, a no-host bar, and 65-inch televisions to watch the main event.

In addition to an exciting day of horseracing, guests will also enjoy food from M Catering, on-site shopping, and a display of luxury vehicles from Sanderson Lincoln.

Local photographer Claudia Johnstone uses her talent to help the ADHD community

Claudia Johnstone is one of the primary photographers who brings images of locals to life through her work in So Scottsdale! magazine. Since Johnstone began working with the magazine’s publishing group, Richman Media Group, eight years ago, her photos have graced 59 covers – and her resume includes over 1,000 photos published in total. “I love telling people’s stories and making them feel good about themselves. It makes my soul sparkle,” she says.

Raised in a small village in Germany, Johnstone’s life has been steeped in design, starting with exposure to construction thanks to her family’s carpentry business, which started in 1822.

Architectural studies at University of Kaiserslautern piqued her appreciation, culminating in her architecture degree. Before moving to Phoenix in 2008, she worked at an international architectural firm in Cambridge, United Kingdom.

After establishing her new home in Arizona, Johnstone worked in a marketing position before finding herself at a crossroads when the company went out of business. “I saw this change as a great opportunity to pursue my passion for photography professionally.”

After a major shift in her personal life, Johnstone was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Her symptoms, which included trouble focusing, impulsivity, feeling overwhelmed, daydreaming, and overthinking, had always left her bewildered. “I always knew I was different, but I learned to mask my symptoms over the years,” Johnstone says.

An online life coaching program called ADD Coaching Academy (ADDCA) proved life-changing, and she became a coach herself. Upon certification, Johnstone decided to combine her passion for coaching with her passion for photography. In her quest for a cohesive project that would bring attention to ADHD and the accompanying emotions, she began to photograph fellow adults with ADHD. “I had subconsciously always been looking for a personal project I could put all my heart and soul into,” she says.

As her ideas coalesced, an ideal opportunity presented itself. First Studio in Phoenix offered her the chance to be part of an exhibit called Five Start International, featuring five local artists in May, June and July. In her exhibit, which opens May 3, Johnstone captures the myriad of vibrant emotions and masks worn by people with ADHD. To achieve her unique style, Johnstone takes multiple exposures in-camera, resulting in one multilayered final color image achieved with minimal retouching.

“In addition to alleviating the stigma of ADHD, I want to shine a light on these individuals and their neurodivergent brains, their struggles, and also their joys and vibrant personalities. I don’t remember the last time I felt so driven.”

Can I reduce my risk of getting skin cancer?

You may be eager to get outside this summer, but it’s also important to protect yourself from the summer sun. One important way to reduce your risk of skin cancer and melanoma is to avoid sun exposure when possible and/ or protect yourself from damaging rays. Consider following these tips:

• Avoid the sun whenever possible between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when damaging ultraviolet light is typically at its strongest. Seek shade if you must be outside.

• Shield yourself from the sun with a wide-brimmed hat, long sleeves and long pants. Wear UV-blocking sunglasses to reduce your risk of eye damage.

• Apply sunscreen liberally. Use a broad-spectrum product that protects against UVA and UVB rays. Make sure it has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher. Re-apply sunscreen every two hours, or more if you are swimming or sweating. And use sunscreen at other times of the year, not just in the summer. The skin can burn when exposed to the sun, no matter the season.

• Sunscreen isn’t the only product that has an SPF rating. Look for an SPF number on labels for beach umbrellas, tents and hats.

• Examine your skin for changing blemishes at least once a month. Ask your spouse or partner to look at

your back or other areas on the body that you can’t see. Get examined by a physician once a year.

• Avoid tanning salons and tanning beds.

• If you are a parent, protect your children from the sun. Burning may significantly increase their risk of melanoma later in life. And examine your children’s skin regularly, just as you would check your own.

2025 ASTON MARTIN VANTAGE

The refreshed icon is achingly gorgeous and massively powerful

One could drive an entire year on the road and, with rare exception, never encounter the Aston Martin Vantage. It’s the type of rolling art that tends to spend perpetuity in collectors’ garages, sans the occasional weekend drive.

The Vantage, as Aston Martin describes it, is a car forged in the fires of the limit – not just a shrine to lap times, but standing as a statue to thrill-seekers who want the pinnacle experience.

The 2025 Vantage is gorgeous, exclusive and incredibly powerful.

Receiving its first refresh since 2020, the 111-year-old British legend has had a complete exterior revision, featuring a 38% larger signature grille, a new front bumper, Matrix LED headlamps, front fender shrouds and all-new 21-inch alloy wheels just ahead of new side vents that wrap “AML” coded Michelin Pilot Sport S 5 tires. There are upgrades galore, including Bilstein DTX adaptive dampers with five times more force distribution bandwidth to better negotiate road variations and available carbon ceramic brakes.

The Vantage has three core livery designs. It is available in 21 colors, a buyer can choose to add a Pinstripe, Pinstripe and Lipstick or

Aston claims a 3.4-second 0-60 mph time and a top speed of 202 mph. The previous V12-engine and manual transmission option are no longer available.

Lathed from solid envy, posturing with menace, low and wide with tenacity and resolve, the experience behind the wheel is nothing short of seriously three-digit fast, triggerfish sharp handling, land anchor braking and nothing less than magically refined.

But as the weather warms and snow melts, new adventures await. Snow King Resort is surrounded by 3.4 million pristine acres of the Bridger-Teton National Forest and the iconic jagged peaks of the Teton Range and Grand Teton National Park. Given its prime location, the resort offers private Snow King Adventure Tours through Grand Teton National Park. Mazatlan mesmerizes with sparkling beaches, private sanctuaries and animal encounters

In the 1950s, a slew of the day’s biggest and brightest stars including Walt Disney, John Wayne, Rock Hudson, and Ronald Regan frequented Mazatlan, an awe-inspiring enclave with more than 12 miles of pristine coastline as well as access to the majestic Sierra Madre mountains and several pockets of lush tropical forest.

Nearly 75 years later, the region – nicknamed the Pacific Pearl – continues to tempt celebrities, but even more so wellheeled U.S. travelers, especially those from the Valley thanks to convenient flights to and from Phoenix Sky Harbor daily. The quick two-hour flight, coupled with Mazatlan staying on the same time zone as Arizona year-round, makes it ideal for a long weekend or spring escape for adventure and utter relaxation alike.

Adventure

The Phoenician Tavern celebrates Arizona’s spice and sunsets with the Fresno Blueberry Margarita

While The Phoenician Tavern is located above The Phoenician Scottsdale Golf Course clubhouse, do not expect standard pub-style food or drinks.

“Certainly, we want to play the hits for our guests – visitors from around the world and down the street alike – by offering approachable comfort food-inspired and drink favorites,” says Ashley Traynor, assistant food and beverage operations manager of The Phoenician Tavern. “However, in everything we do, expect an upscale twist and a nod, if at all possible, to a local point of pride or two.”

Take the Fresno Blueberry Margarita ($18), which is part of the newly launched spring menu that explores tequila in various vintages, ages and forms.

“Everyone loves a margarita; almost as much as an epic Arizona sunset,” Traynor says. “Why not marry the two with a little hint of spice, another Arizona staple, into something that screams spring?”

The cocktail starts with Fresno chili peppers, which get muddled in a shaker with blueberry puree and agave syrup.

“The sweet ingredients amp up heat in the peppers, and vice versa, elevating all three ingredients while creating a vibrant pink hue in the shaker,” Traynor says.

Lime juice is added, followed by oak barrel-rested Hornitos Reposado Tequila, and finally Cointreau liqueur. “We shake the ingredients and strain into a double old-fashioned glass with ice and a sea salt rim, garnishing the cocktail with additional chili peppers and a lime wheel.”

Visually, the cocktail looks nearly identical to the sunset on the patio each night, and to the taste it offers a refreshing combination of flavors that celebrate the seasonality of blueberries, the power of the Sonoran Desert chili pepper, and the spirit of tequila.

In the kitchen with Ken Arneson of Driftwood Hospitality

Ken Arneson is the area executive chef of Driftwood Hospitality, which recently led The Scottsdale Resort & Spa, a Curio Collection Resort by Hilton, in its culinary transformation.

First, tell us about this transformation. This year, we launched three new restaurants on property: La Fogata, offering modern Sonoran cuisine with global influences; The Social Boardroom, a buzzy spot with a golf simulator focused on small bites and shareables; and Barnaby’s Café + Wine Bar, a coffee shop with pastries and fast-casual items by day that transforms into a wine bar at night. We also debuted The Madam, a speakeasy that will eventually serve food as well.

What are some of the must-order items on your new menus?

At La Fogata, try the Chilean sea bass and the meat and potatoes plate, which features braised oxtail, gnocchi, roasted mushrooms, and truffle-infused pecorino. At The Social Boardroom, order the naked wings, which come with sauces ranging from Louisiana-style barbecue to Sriracha honey.

You and Sriracha have a history, right?

In 2019, I was on Chopped, using the secret ingredients, which included sea water, to make this really cool seafood and frisee salad dish. I thought it needed color so painted the plate with Sriracha. The judges did not love all the spice, and it got me “chopped.” The Boardroom’s Sriracha is my redemption sauce!

What first inspired you to cook?

I was born in Honolulu so food – especially Polynesian cuisine – was always special. I eventually moved to Seattle, where my grandfather and stepfather were both chefs. However, it wasn’t until I took kitchen positions to pay for carpentry school that I found my passion for cooking. That led me to the Culinary Institute of America, and the rest is history.

What is something readers would be surprised to know about you?

While I never became a professional carpenter, I am an avid woodworker, mostly crafting furniture like coffee and kitchen tables.

Every spring, however, citrus blooms across the Valley, and menus come alive with dishes that let everything from oranges to grapefruit serve as more than an afterthought.

Coconut Crunchy Shrimp

While each hand-breaded jumbo shrimp has the perfect ratio of coconut to panko and is fried until golden brown, it is the trio of sauces that sets this starter apart. The most powerful of the bunch is the orange-pink glaze made with orange marmalade and zesty chili oil. The flavor-imbued fish is then tossed with coconut milk, jalapenos, chopped cilantro, and garlic. A wild celebration of textures, this dish starts with beets that have been roasted for two hours in orange juice, orange zest and other aromatics. Next, the beets are fried until crispy and arranged on a plate with whipped mascarpone, shaved horseradish and watercress. It is topped with a stunning variety of cara cara navel, regular navel, and blood oranges from McClendon’s Select Organic in Peoria. The Montauk

While The Montauk pays homage to the Hamptons in its aesthetic and overall vibe, this dish is a clear nod to seaside eateries scattered along Mexico. It pairs artisan greens with pepitas, red onions and avocado before topping the creamy and vegetal components with ample slices of orange and queso fresco, which is a soft, fresh Mexican cheese most often from a cow. Seared Ahi Tuna Salad

ZuZu at Hotel Valley Ho Refreshing yet bold, this dish starts with tuna that is flown in daily from Hawaii. The tuna is

dusted with togarashi, a Japanese seven-spice mix consisting of citrus, nori, sesame, chili, poppy seed, and Szechuan pepper. The tuna is then quickly seared to toast the spices yet keep a rare temperature. Next, a salad of local citrus, including grapefruit, cara cara orange, lemon, and blood orange, is mixed with cucumber, avocado, pickled chilies, radishes, and fresh herbs. Cooked shrimp, clams and mussels are enveloped in a broth made from tomato and fennel, resulting in the umami base of the dish. The dish is finished with a whole lemon, which is halved and charred. Guests may have it added prior to coming to the table or do the honors by squeezing the lemon on themselves. Child Crisis’ 46th annual fundraising gala, held at JW Marriot Camelback Inn Resort & Spa, featured a Yellowstone theme, with cowboy chic attire encouraged. Beginner’s Luck opens doors in Old Town Scottsdale

Growing up, Bernie Kantak would spend nights in the kitchen cooking up a big family feast with his Hungarian grandmother, dancing together while they waited for various recipes to simmer, roast and boil. Those nights inspired Kantak to become a chef and restaurateur. Today, in partnership with Andrew Fritz, he owns In Good Spirits Hospitality Group, best known for owning and operating The Gladly and Citizen Public House.

Seeking to recreate some of his favorite family dishes as well as celebrate his brand’s most popular signature items, Kantak and his team recently launched a third concept in Beginner’s Luck.

The space is just 1,700 square feet, small by design to pay homage to the tiny kitchen where Kantak and his grandmother spent so many nights. However, thanks to an open kitchen, ample dining room tables, and additional seating on the patio and at the vibrant copper bar, Beginner’s Luck – dotted inside and out with houseplants and succulents as colorful accents – feels cozy and warm. Lit by the sun during the day, at night the interior has a wholly different look and feel thanks to twinkling bistro lights and candles.

For brunch and lunch, Beginner’s Luck sources its coffee from Moxie Coffee Co., using it to roast traditional brews as well as specialty coffees and lattes. Highlights during the daypart include a bevy of fresh pastries as well as a few signature items: My Rich Uncle’s French Toast, which is a big brick of challah bread transformed into a light and airy take on the breakfast favorite, complete with butterscotch syrup; the 12-Hour Niman Ranch Pork with blue corn grits, crushed cucumber, pickled onion, jalapeno, avocado, lime, cilantro, chicharron, and queso fresco; and the Lucky 7 Breakfast Bowl, a play on Kantak’s popular chopped salad from The Gladly that brings together warm blue corn grits, chilled chia pudding, coconut-pecan granola, berries, cornflower, and agave. And yes, Kantak’s Original Chopped Salad is on the menu by popular demand.

Beginner’s Luck expanded to offer dinner in recent weeks as well. The Steak Fritz, a coffee-rubbed prime sirloin with hand-cut fries, chili-infused butter, and paprikash sour cream, is an early favorite as is the PanRoasted Norwegian Salmon with mashed Yukon gold potatoes, chai-infused beurre blanc sauce, beans, and snow pea leaf oil.

The buzzy cocktail menu brings in the morning vibe with items like the Chai-rish Iced Coffee with Irish whiskey, chai, cold brew, and stiffened cream, and also features a slew of both traditional and modern recipes as well. There is an impressive array of beers and wines, both by the glass and bottle, and while happy hour has not launched as of yet, there is a paired down midday menu available from 2 to 4 p.m. with small bites, shareables and cocktails.

Beginner’s Luck is open Wednesday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with plans to expand hours in the future. The restaurant is closed Monday and Tuesday.

Previously, I mentioned the amazing philanthropic events the Valley hosts. Philanthropy is something that my family and I care about deeply. I serve as Vice Chair of Gateway for Cancer Research, a nonprofit organization founded by my husband Richard in 1991 that is dedicated to funding Phase I and II clinical trials. In this role, I bring my expertise in functional and integrative medicine to oncology, placing quality of life at the center of care. I also spearhead Gateway’s signature fundraising events here in the Valley, Vino con Stelle and Gateway Celebrity Fight Night.

In addition to Gateway, I’ve been recognized for my work on behalf of ChildHelp with their 2021 Woman of the World Award and participate on the Phoenix Heart Ball Committee. Beyond local events, Richard and I were awarded the Women’s Cancer Research Fund Unsung Hero Award in 2023 and support various charitable efforts that help people achieve better overall health.

DETOX YOUR HOME IN ONE WEEKEND

Instead of your basic annual spring cleaning, consider a home detox this year instead. A home detox takes cleaning to the next level, by getting both the dirt and the toxins out of your home environment. This isn’t as intimidating as it may sound. Here is a plan for you to detox your home in one weekend.

Before your cleaning weekend, invest in some basic natural cleaning products. These are products that do not release chemicals into the air, pollute the groundwater, or subject you to noxious chemicals. There are many companies that make high quality natural cleaning products—look for a good basic all-purpose cleaning solution, glass cleaner, and floor cleaner. (I’ll also tell you how to make your own.)

Choose a sunny day and get started:

1. Open all the windows. Shake out the rugs and drapes outside, then lay them out in the sun.

2. Dust surfaces including walls, ceilings, ceiling fans, and windowsills.

3. Pull out a large trash can and dump all the toxic ingredients in your house: Any cleaners, lawn and garden, and personal care products that use chemicals. (Contact your local solid waste agency to ask how to properly dispose of hazardous chemicals in your area.)

4. Next, sprinkle carpets with baking soda.

5. While the baking soda sits and absorbs odors, sweep and mop all hard surface floors with a natural floor cleaner, or a combination of 8 parts warm water to 2 parts white vinegar and 2 or 3 drops of liquid dish soap. Mop.

6. While the floors are drying, vacuum the baking soda out of the carpets.

7. Wash all bedding with a nontoxic detergent.

8. Clean all glass and mirrors with a natural glass cleaner, or combine 1 part warm water, 1 part rubbing alcohol, and ¼ cup white vinegar in a spray bottle.

9. Clean all sinks and counters with a natural all-purpose cleaner, or combine equal parts white vinegar and warm water in a spray bottle. You can even use this to clean the toilet with a good sturdy toilet brush.

10. Put all rugs, drapes, and bedding back in place, and take a deep breath of your clean indoor air.

If you keep using natural cleaning and personal care products, your home will become cleaner and less toxic with every season.

5 SIMPLE CANCER PREVENTION TIPS FROM AN INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE EXPERT

If you have friends or family members who have battled cancer— and most of us know someone—you may feel especially motivated to practice cancer prevention. That’s great, and something you really can influence through lifestyle. While much of my philanthropy work centers around funding cutting-edge cancer research (primarily through Gateway for Cancer Research), I also know, as an integrative medicine expert, how powerful everyday behaviors can be in helping to support the body’s natural defenses against cancer.

Fortunately, many of the practices that can help prevent cancer are the same ones that protect against other chronic diseases, from type 2 diabetes and obesity to heart disease, autoimmunity, fatty liver disease, kidney disease, and dementia. That’s because all the systems of the body are connected, so what influences one part of you—let’s say your heart—also influences all the other parts of you, including your brain, liver, and immune system.

When it comes to cancer prevention, the immune system is key. The most important part of prevention is to stop interfering with and start supporting the immune system. The immune system is your primary defense against cancer cell growth. If it is busy trying to correct other health issues, cancer cells can slip under the radar and start growing.

Keeping your immune system as strong and undistracted as possible is critical. That’s not to say, of course, that this will prevent all cancers. There are many factors that can lead to the development of cancer, and if someone gets cancer, it is certainly not their fault. However, why not do everything you can to improve your odds? In that spirit, below are my five simple tips for reducing your risk of developing any kind of cancer:

1. Eat more vegetables and fruits. Vegetables and fruits are full of polyphenols with anti-cancer properties. If medicine was preventive, vegetables and fruits would be the ideal form of natural medicine. The wider variety of plant foods you eat, the more anti-cancer phytochemicals you’ll be taking in. Consider that most people in the U.S. only eat about 2 cups of vegetables and fruits per day, but aiming for more like 5 to 8 cups is a powerful way to support the immune system. This isn’t as hard as it sounds. A smoothie with berries and greens for breakfast, a big salad for lunch, and a few servings of steamed vegetables with your dinner will get you there. Rotate your veggies and eat seasonally to get as many types into your diet as possible.

2. Get more cardio. There are plenty of benefits to exercise, including weight lifting, balance training, and stretching, but cardiovascular exercise, like walking, jogging, biking, and swimming, is associated with a lower risk for many of the

common types of cancer. Regular exercise strengthens the body, promoting general health and a strong immune system, which can help your body to better fight off cancer.

3. Drink less (or no) alcohol. The research claiming that small amounts of red wine may be good for your heart has been called into question, but the link between cancer and alcohol is pretty clear-cut, especially for breast, esophageal, and colon cancer. The simple truth is that any amount of alcohol increases risk, so if you are concerned about cancer, cut down or, ideally, cut out alcohol. Fortunately, there are plenty of fun and delicious non-alcoholic beer, wine, and mocktail options, as sober living has come into the mainstream.

4. Avoid unblocked sun and dirty air. We all know smoking cigarettes increases cancer risk, but smoking anything or regularly inhaling polluted air increases cancer risk because this introduces pollutants into the body. Although we don’t know everything about vaping yet, logic dictates that inhaling anything that is not clean fresh air isn’t good for lung health. As for the sun, we also know that regular sunscreen use can greatly reduce skin cancer risk, including the risk of potentially deadly malignant melanoma. Short version: Don’t inhale smoke or vapor, stay away from polluted areas when possible, improve your indoor air quality with air cleaning technology, and cover up or block the rays of the sun.

5. Get screened. Technically, screening doesn’t prevent cancer, but it can help catch it early, greatly improving the prognosis. Screening for HPV and cervical cancer should start in the teen years or early 20s at the latest. Start getting screened for skin cancer at 30, breast and prostate cancer at 40, colon and lung cancer at 50. You may want to screen earlier if you have a family history of any of these cancers. If you have a family history of ovarian, thyroid, pancreatic, endometrial, stomach, bladder, esophageal, or other cancers, make sure your doctor knows and ask about what signs to watch for. Get an annual physical and remind your doctor every year about your personal risks. Vigilance is your best weapon!
