Girlfriend Has to Sell the Home After Boyfriend Moves Out

Q:

My boyfriend and I bought a Scottsdale condominium in both of our names three years ago. My boyfriend now has a new girlfriend and he moved out last week. My boyfriend wants to sell our condominium, but I want to stay in our condominium with our six-month old baby. If I can’t stay in our condominium, I will have to move to Glendale to stay with my parents. Is there any way that I can stay in our Scottsdale condominium?

A:

No. In no-fault divorce, even if one party doesn’t want a divorce, there will still be a divorce. Similarly, in no-fault partition of a home, even if one party doesn’t want to sell the home, there will still be a partition lawsuit for the sale of the home.

The Judge in the partition lawsuit will appoint a Special Commissioner, usually a real estate broker who “farms” the area, to sell the home and deposit the net sale proceeds with the Court. [“Net sale proceeds” are the balance of the sale price after payment of the mortgage, the broker commissions, any repairs, etc.] The parties can then either settle the distribution of the net sale proceeds, or begin litigation to have the Judge determine who gets what from the net sale proceeds.

Bottom line: We have represented clients in dozens of partition lawsuits, and after the net sale proceeds are deposited with the Court, the parties ALWAYS settle, usually very quickly!

In May, we always celebrate Mom. Though the actual Mother’s Day holiday is on May 12, there’s no reason why moms shouldn’t be acknowledged all month long. And, even if you’re not a mom, this issue is definitely for you – we’re dedicating all 130 pages to moms and women in general.

Lindsey Callinsky works to encourage the next generation of women leaders

For Lindsey Callinsky, nothing is more important than serving as a role model – both to her own sons, and to any girls who are in the same position she once found herself in.

“My younger sister and I were raised by a single mom who worked really hard at a time when it was not easy for women to

get a leg up in their careers, especially while having kids,” says Callinsky, who, while growing up in the ’80s and ’90s, had difficulty finding many examples of women in leadership roles. “I can’t help but feel it contributed to girls not believing they could be leaders. Seeing is a big part of believing.”

At age 18, she got a job as a temp at Wells Fargo and began noticing women in executive leadership roles. She also saw a direct correlation between the amount of work she invested in her career and her success at the company. While climbing the ladder from Wells Fargo’s VP regional sales coach to VP of treasury management , she realized how she might be able to serve as the type of role model she had once dreamed of seeing.

In 2013, Callinsky began volunteering with Girls Inc., a nonprofit that advocates for strength and boldness in girls nationwide, supporting the next generation of powerful women while striving to build a more equitable society.

“Through my experiences there I could see what a difference that type of coaching and mentoring would have had on me at a younger age. I fully believe we can change the world by empowering women and girls. Sitting on the board of Girls Inc. for seven years proved that to me.”

Fighting for the Future

Callinsky’s involvement with Girls Inc. was just the beginning of her journey of giving back. After a stint working in marketing

for a startup, she was able to merge her career experience with her passion for philanthropy as Phoenix Children’s Foundation’s director of marketing, a position she still holds today.

Before joining the foundation in 2023, Callinsky’s family had a firsthand experience with the hospital. “My son had a medical event. No parent is ever prepared for that, but when it did happen, I was so glad Phoenix Children’s was here in my backyard to give him the care he needed. I was amazed at the clinical team and all the little things they do to make it a little less scary for kids. Joining the foundation side of the hospital was an easy decision that aligned with my vision for helping the underserved, and those who can’t advocate for themselves.”

Among her favorite parts of the job are supporting the hospital’s medical staff and helping corporate partners see the direct impact of their donations, connecting them with individual patients who have benefitted from those dollars.

“Parents feel helpless enough when their child is sick, but my hope is that we can take care of the other things so they can focus solely on their child, their family. Parents should never have to choose between their child’s health and rent.”

Family Matters

When she moved to Phoenix, which isn’t currently home to a Girls Inc. chapter, Callinsky was on the lookout for a new way to get involved in the causes closest to her heart. She found a perfect match in Helping Hands for Single Moms.

The Phoenix-based organization helps low-income single mother families while the mom pursues post-secondary education, providing scholarship money, resources for the household and auto repairs, legal counsel and networking and mentoring opportunities. For Callinsky, who has served on the nonprofit’s board since 2021, it’s all about empowering single moms to alter their destinies.

“My mom has always been an inspiration. She worked incredibly hard and I absolutely get that from her. We may have been short on a lot of things, but we were never short on love and support,” she says. “I want young women to know that just because they are here now doesn’t mean this is where they have to stay. You are not your circumstances.”

Callinsky – who is also an executive member of CHIEF, a private network focused on bringing more women into positions of power – is endlessly motivated by her family. Her husband Casey provides a solid foundation that helps her feel she can always reach higher. Her sons are also a source of inspiration – the bravery and boldness of her stepson, who currently lives in Barcelona, and her 10-year-old’s compassion and his fierceness on the soccer field. Both of them dream big and feel deeply, and are never afraid to stand up for girls and all that they’re capable of.

“It is a cornerstone of our family to help others. We don’t just talk about it, we do it, and we want our kids to see that,” she says. “Being in a position where you have enough for your family is a privilege, and I never want to take that for granted. By giving back, whether through money, time or work, you are reminded how plentiful your gifts are that you have extra to give away.”

DYNAMIC DUO

Mother and daughter pair honor their loved one with a newly opened microdistillery

As a teen, Trish Ritchie set her sights on working in hospitality as a means to travel, taking a job at a golf resort in her native Florida. Upon graduation, she transferred to a sister resort in Durango, Colorado in 1989, where she met and started dating a handsome bellman named Brad Ritchie.

The couple married in 1995 and welcomed daughter Bren in 1999. In 2007, they made Arizona home. By then, Trish was rising in the ranks at Dave & Buster’s while Brad worked in sales and real estate. Over the next 15 years, the Ritchies raised Bren in the north Valley. “In 2021, Brad and I started talking about opening our own bar and restaurant,” Trish says. “As the conversation progressed, Brad began to fall ill. After a series of tests, he was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia.”

Brad underwent chemotherapy and was nearly cancer free by December 2021. “We started talking about the restaurant again at this time, but tragically Brad’s cancer came back, and we lost him in March 2022,” Trish says.

For the next year, the mother and daughter worked through their grief. In 2023, Trish began thinking about moving forward with the restaurant with Bren at her side. At the same time, Bren suggested they develop a private label vodka to honor her dad. By October 2023, they made both dreams a reality with the opening of One Handsome Bastard, Old Town Scottsdale’s only microdistillery (www.onehandsomebastard.com), in the space formerly occupied by Blue Clover Distillery.

“The name is a term Brad would use on himself with a wink while looking in the mirror,” Trish says.

They are working in partnership with Blue Clover to offer the brand’s popular array of premium, smallbatch gin and vodkas. The industrial space also offers a full menu of craft cocktails and elevated bar favorites, flatbreads, salads, and sweets. “Bren has shown a real talent for distilling, so she is working toward becoming our master distiller as well,” Trish says. “We are also very proud to announce the launch of One Handsome Bastard, our hand-distilled vodka named for Brad.”

Ten percent of the sale of each bottle of One Handsome Bastard benefits a local cancer-focused nonprofit. “In June, we will distribute our first donation to The Singletons, which is devoted to meeting the needs of single-parent families battling cancer,” Bren says.

AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY

Laura Linn Knight’s new book provides practical guidance on mold toxicity

Laura Linn Knight – parenting educator, author, mindfulness and meditation leader, mother of two, and former elementary school teacher – is devoted to equipping families with the tools they need to create a calm and healthy home.

In 2019, one of Knight’s daughters, who was 5 years old at the time, started experiencing anxiety and waking up in the middle of the night screaming. Knight, immediately recognizing that something was wrong, set out on a quest to help her daughter, leading her in an unexpected direction: on a journey to address mold exposure and its profound impact on physical and mental well-being.

To find out what was causing her daughter’s suffering, Knight started at ground zero, talking to other professionals, including child psychologists. A functional medicine physician suggested testing for mold toxicity and Knight was astounded to find that there were high levels of mold in her daughter’s body and in the family’s home. Even more shocking: An estimated 10 million Americans suffer from mold toxicity.

Then came the process of healing and education, which led Knight to author a book on the topic. Titled The Toxic Mold Solution: A Comprehensive Guide to Healing Your Home and Body from Mold: From Physical Symptoms to Tests and Everything in Between, the conversational book includes research, expert guidance, case studies, and her experiences with the devastating effects of mold. Though this isn’t the first book released on the topic, according to Knight, her book is meant to be an easier read.

“It’s difficult to read a scientific book when you’re in a stress state,” she says. “This is the book I’d want to give to a friend who has questions.”

While she never set out to be an expert in this area – and wouldn’t wish mold toxicity on anyone –Knight considers it a privilege to be able to give back due to her family’s experience. “I do believe that we get opportunities to show up in the world in a helpful way, and oftentimes, it’s our pain that helps us do that.”

Next, she plans to continue her series of picture books that help children learn emotional regulation, mindfulness and ways to cope with stress.

“We live in an age when so many people are struggling, and so many kids are having a hard time. I think that books can heal people,” she says.

Kae Marie’s sartorial journey has been a seamless fusion of sophistication and playfulness, peppered with a dash of timeless elegance.

Born amidst the bustling streets of New York City, Marie’s trajectory in fashion began far from the spotlight of the runway. However, her passion for style led her on a westward journey and she found herself entwined with the esteemed designer Nino Aidi at Baron Paris, where she currently works as a leather expert and fashion advisor.

What is your most prized possession in your closet? It’s so hard for me to pick just one, but I have an Oscar de la Renta gown sitting in the back of my closet just waiting for that moment to be worn.

Bags and shoes play a pivotal role in defining style. I firmly believe that accessories hold the key to transforming an outfit. Entrepreneur and philanthropist Renee Parsons is no stranger to hard work.

“Growing up, a strong work ethic was very much instilled in my sisters and me,” Parsons says. “At 13, I started working in my family’s restaurant in my small hometown in Michigan, riding my bike to work during the summer. I really loved working.”

She decided to study hospitality at Central Michigan University, and during that time, her family ventured into the hotel business. It was working part time at the front desk that solidified Parsons’ passion for the industry. Eventually, she moved to Chicago, where she worked in the hotel industry for over 10 years, specializing in sales and marketing.

“I loved that it was always fast paced, always something different. I really enjoyed the sales process, nurturing relationships with my clients, negotiating and closing on contracts. The people that are attracted to hospitality are pretty social, outgoing and service-oriented, which I was from a young age.”

A Golfer’s Paradise

Flash forward to 2013, and Parsons – who now calls Scottsdale home along with her husband, entrepreneur Bob Parsons –was able to put her many years of hospitality experience to use when the couple acquired The Golf Club Scottsdale, which they renamed Scottsdale National Golf Club. They embarked on a full-scale renovation with one goal in mind – to create the kind of club they would want to be members of.

For Parsons, this goes beyond all-star service and luxurious amenities, like spas and gourmet restaurants, though the club has these in spades.

“We were passionate about having the club wide open, so we didn’t have to have tee times, and we were exclusive enough that it would never be crowded. We wanted it to be relaxing.”

One thing that sets it apart from other private clubs is the lack of rules. At the Parsons’ club, it starts and ends with the golden rule – “No member shall impinge upon another member’s enjoyment of the club.” It comes down to common sense and mutual respect between fellow golfers, rather than arbitrary codes of conduct.

“You can wear your hat in the clubhouse if you wish,” Parsons says. “We don’t have a cell phone ban. You can play music on the course. In many clubs still, there is a rule about how long a woman’s skirt should be. We don’t have any such rule.”

One of Parsons’ personal missions was to create a club that was welcoming to both men and women, which she set out to accomplish by bringing women onto the leadership team in a predominantly male industry and curating a welcoming culture for all players. Golf is the great equalizer, she says, and that fact should be apparent on and off the course.

“Because of the handicapping system, anyone can play with anyone. I can play golf with my husband, and with my parents, who are in their 80s now and still playing. It’s really the only sport where you can do that – I can’t play LeBron James in basketball, but we could go out and play golf together.”

New Threads

Since falling in love with golf over 15 years ago, Parsons has also made a splash in the golf apparel world as the president and executive creative director of PXG Apparel (www.pxg.com).

A lifelong fashion lover, Parsons saw the need for stylish, flattering golf apparel, and after debuting the brand to great success in 2018, it was clear that customers agreed. With a variety of new seasonal and capsule collections released each year –including the sophisticated, retro-inspired Spring/Summer ’24 collection – Parsons is always looking for ways to prioritize versatility and performance while updating the classics.

“The beauty of PXG is that I can wear it on and off the course and feel equally comfortable,” she says. “I wear our joggers and dresses on the course, while running around doing errands, playing pickleball or tennis, even to the office. It was important to me to have things I’d want to wear everywhere because they’re so flattering and chic.”

Highlights of this journey have included wearing clothes of her own design on the course and receiving compliments from friends and strangers alike, in addition

to helping Parsons Xtreme Golf expand across the country. There are now 24 PXG stores in the U.S., with the most recent opening in Orange County, California. While all PXG stores feature a putting green, high-tech fitting bays and a PXG Apparel showroom; the largest location is in Scottsdale, home of PXG’s five building campus headquarters.

Compassion in Action

Just as Parsons’ family instilled in her a love for hospitality, they also provided a model for giving back.

“I was blessed growing up to see philanthropy at work from my parents, both active in the community and in different charitable organizations in my small hometown.”

In 2013, she and Bob signed the Giving Pledge, a public promise to give away at least half of their net worth. Over a decade later, they’re still going strong. The Bob & Renee Parsons Foundation gives away an average of $1 million every 14 days to its nonprofit partners, all of whom are making big waves in causes that have special meaning to the Parsons.

“We really want to reach economically disadvantaged and underserved populations, those in marginalized communities, and causes that often are overlooked. By virtue of being overlooked, they’re typically underfunded by mainstream philanthropy or not eligible for government grants.”

Rather than spread their donations thin across a variety of charitable organizations, the Parsons pride the foundation on making targeted impacts on specific nonprofits, each one carefully vetted to ensure funds will directly benefit the people served.

This spring, the foundation was honored by its largest partner, Semper Fi & America’s Fund, for donating over $100 million in support of critically wounded, ill and injured veterans from all branches of the military. Parsons – who is also a member of Women Moving Millions, a philanthropic community dedicated to largescale investment in women and girls – is also passionate about issues surrounding women, children, education, and LGBTQ rights.

Nonprofits close to her heart include

one-n-ten, which supports LGBTQ youth who face discrimination and homelessness; Girl Scouts Arizona Cactus-Pine, with a recent grant expanding outdoor programming and providing increased access to low-income families; and Boys & Girls Club of the Valley, which is working to improve the mental wellbeing of school-aged children, something that’s become especially essential since the pandemic.

“In the last several years, we’ve focused a lot on mental health,” Parsons says. “These organizations are doing great

work to mitigate that and provide the support these kids need.”

If there’s one thing Parsons has learned over the years, it’s that following your instincts is crucial on the path to success, but it’s not always easy.

“Women and girls are taught to be nice, polite and all of those things, and sometimes, that confidence isn’t necessarily there. But you’ve got to have the confidence to trust your gut, to believe in yourself. You have a right to be here just as much as anyone else.”

Anyone will tell you that mothers are capable of changing the world. This month, we celebrate moms across the Valley who work around the clock to raise a family while supporting the community through education and empowerment. In honor of Mother’s Day, meet five local moms whose tireless work inspires change, encourages greatness, and sets an example at home and beyond.

JULIE DUNNIGAN

CEO, Cancer Support Community Arizona

Two years ago, Julie Dunnigan was diagnosed with breast cancer, and her world changed overnight.

“I was scared and overwhelmed but determined to be strong,” Dunnigan says. “I didn’t want cancer to change anything in my life. Yes, I was delusional – cancer is more than just medicine, it has a profound impact on your mental health.”

Dunnigan, who has nearly 15 years of experience in nonprofit administration and fundraising – including with the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research, the Canadian Olympic Foundation and the Goodwill Foundation – took a break from her career during treatment and recovery. When she returned to the professional world, it was to make a big impact on the cause that had become so close to her heart.

“Doctors know the importance of combining strong psychological, social and emotional support with medical treatment for patients to have the best outcomes. That support is not typically available in hospital – that’s where CSCAZ steps in.”

As the CEO of Cancer Support Community Arizona (CSCAZ), she helps provide free emotional and social support for people impacted by cancer. The organization offers over 100 free programs each month, from social activities and educational seminars to bilingual support groups and mind and body therapies, all in the name of catching people who might otherwise fall.

“As a cancer survivor, I have a profound personal understanding of the importance of our mission, including the impact cancer has on the whole family – which is why you can often find my husband and my teenage daughter participating in CSCAZ programs,” she says.

And if there’s one thing Dunnigan wants to model for her daughter, it’s that being strong doesn’t always look how you’d expect it to – sometimes it means bringing love into the workplace, staying genuine and never being afraid to ask for help.

“It takes courage to ask for help. We may assume that strong people have everything figured out, and they can handle things on their own, but I believe the opposite is true,” she says. “If there’s one thing I learned from having cancer, it’s that asking for help made me stronger.”

DANA HERZBERG

Founder and head of school,

The Jones-Gordon School

Dana Herzberg has always known that she wanted to change lives in the very same way her life was once changed.

“As a child, I was diagnosed with dyslexia and dyscalculia between my third and fourth grade year,” Herzberg says. “Growing up a high-ability child with learning differences in reading and math, my one-on-one tutors impacted my life remarkably by providing me with the foundation to build academic success while empowering me to reach my fullest potential.”

Herzberg discovered a passion for volunteering at age 16 while working in a classroom for those with severe learning differences. From there, she went on to pursue a bachelor’s degree in special education and a master’s in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis on gifted education, both from Arizona State University.

While working as an educational consultant, she noticed the need for a local learning environment that catered to high-potential students with learning challenges. In 1999, she created On-Track Tutoring. The home- and sitebased tutoring service became part of something even bigger in 2010, when Herzberg officially opened the doors of The Jones-Gordon School, (JGS), named after two of her professional and personal heroes.

Located in Paradise Valley, the private school provides individualized education for students in grades one through 12 with language-based learning differences or attention challenges, such as dyslexia and ADHD. Cornerstones include personalized, student-centered programming, experiential learning, small class sizes and a culture of kindness that promotes a tight-knit community among students.

JGS is modeled after the one-on-one tutoring approach that allowed Herzberg to thrive, encouraging creativity, curiosity and courage. In 2023, she celebrated a new milestone – in a fundraising first, JGS’s Dream Big Gala raised over half a million dollars, solidifying the school’s impact on the community while celebrating student achievement.

The overall goal for Herzberg is to leave behind a welcoming and nurturing environment for the student body – which currently includes her 18-year-old son, Nathan. “I have always instilled in him, and all of my students, the power of grit and perseverance. I hope to leave behind a legacy that empowers individuals to achieve their highest potential despite any obstacles they may face in their pursuit.”

KENDRA RILEY

Rare disease advocate

During COVID-19, two of Kendra Riley’s three daughters were diagnosed with metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD). The genetic disease is extremely rare, and the prognosis is poor.

Livvy, the middle child of the three, was already symptomatic, meaning there were no lifesaving treatments available. But Keira, who was a newborn at the time, had not yet displayed symptoms.

“There was one option in the world that could potentially save her life – a gene therapy treatment that was only available in Milan, Italy,” Riley says. “Upon diagnosis, we had one month to raise $500,000 to pay out of pocket for the treatment and move our family to Milan for five months.”

In 2020, Keira became the 32nd child in the world to receive the treatment. “She’s now living the life of a happy, healthy 4-year-old with zero symptoms. Every day is a miracle seeing Keira walk, talk, run, jump and go to school. These are all things that wouldn’t be possible had she not received that treatment.”

Upon returning home, Riley, a seasoned PR professional and founder of Phoenix-based agency Dawning Public Relations, shared her family’s story with national and international news outlets. Her goal was to save other families the experience of uprooting their lives for treatment – a goal she made great headway in by helping pass Right to Try 2.0 in Arizona.

Recently, the advocacy of Riley and others in the rare disease community has paid off even further – this March, the treatment Keira received was approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

“I hope our family’s journey not only helps provide access to lifesaving medical treatments for patients with rare diseases, but that MLD will get added to nationwide newborn screening. No family should have to lose one child in order to save another.”

After symptom onset, Livvy lost the ability to walk and talk, and is now tube-fed. She loves listening to music, watching the birds, going to the aquarium and spending time with her sisters.

Through it all, there’s been one important lesson for Riley and her family – “To have hope and strength in the face of despair. It can turn a tragedy into a triumph.”

STEPHANIE MONTGOMERY

Founder, Monty’s Marvels

After her husband, MLB pitcher Mike Montgomery, won the World Series with the Chicago Cubs, Stephanie Montgomery knew they could use this victory to create something amazing.

“We realized that we were able to make an impact on the communities we were in thanks to baseball,” Montgomery says. “Our mission has always been simple – we want to recognize people that do amazing things and help wherever we can.”

Their nonprofit, Monty’s Marvels, supports women and children-focused charities. Recently, they’ve focused on a silent crisis, introduced to them by the Kansas City Royals: diaper need. No federal programs cover diaper costs for the nearly half of all families that experience diaper need in the United States.

“If families can’t provide enough diapers, the child can’t be sent to daycare. Then the caregiver may not be able to go to work or school. The health risks for the child are also substantial, ranging from infections to toxic stress – and the risk of depression for the mother goes up as well,” says Montgomery, who experienced postpartum depression and anxiety herself after the birth of their first child.

Now a mom of two, Montgomery – who started her career at Google before transitioning to a full-time TV host focused on techbased content – has recently added “author” to her list of accomplishments. When she couldn’t find the right children’s book about their family’s favorite game, she wrote Max & Ollie’s Guide to Baseball, named after their son Max and their dog, Ollie the Australian shepherd. Max & Ollie has since grown into a baseball-themed lifestyle brand, with a portion of proceeds supporting Monty’s Marvels.

Montgomery hopes that her transparency about her journey can help remove some of the burdens from future generations.

“I want my children to know that you never have to hide something that you’re struggling with,” she says. “I hid my postpartum struggles for so long, and I want them to know they never have to deal with something hard on their own. Every struggle we face can be a blessing – not only to ourselves, but to people who we can help with our newfound knowledge and experience.”

CASSIE WELLS

Founding member, The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Rising Leaders

As the founder of a business development firm, Modern Business Development, and the co-founder of Keymakers, a members-only group for purposeful executive connections, Cassie Wells has had an accomplished career. But it’s when she applies her leadership skills to making an impact on the community that she feels the most fulfilled.

In 2022, after making more time in her schedule for nonprofit work, Wells became a founding member of The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Rising Leaders. The giving circle allows young professionals the opportunity to support the nonprofit’s mission to feed, clothe, house, and heal, while serving as community leaders and fundraisers.

“My father used to bring my brother and me to help feed the homeless at SVdP [St. Vincent de Paul] when we were little kids. Any Saturday that we were in town, we were there,” Wells says. “Oftentimes people ignore those on the streets, when in reality, they are the ones who need our attention the most. I’m here to help break the stereotypes and help others open their hearts to helping those in need.”

Wells is also a frequent volunteer at the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Last year, she served as the executive co-chair for Emerging Leaders for the annual Light the Night Walk, a fundraiser that aims to bring some light to the darkness caused by cancer.

Her first year attending the walk still stands out in her memory. “Seeing the lights walk around Sloan Park was breathtaking. You can see based on the color of the lanterns that people carry exactly how they are affected. Cancer affects so many of us, and together is the only way we can fight to end it.”

Wells hopes that her two children will follow her example of spreading kindness, but she says silent legacies are just as important as loud ones.

“I believe we make the biggest difference making daily connections through random acts of kindness. This can be for strangers, or checking in on friends and family that don’t seem themselves lately. Helping people because it is the right thing to do, not because someone is watching.”

Championing Change

Dr. Shana Wingo, MD embodies compassionate care with clinical excellence

Dr. Shana Wingo’s journey into medicine was inspired by a childhood dream. Ultimately, her passion for women’s health led her to pursue a career in medicine, with a particular focus on Gynecologic Oncology. It was during her rotation in this field that she found her calling, drawn to the deep bonds formed with patients and the profound impact of their stories on her own life.

Hailing from El Paso, Texas, Dr. Wingo credits her upbringing for instilling in her a strong work ethic and a drive for excellence. Raised by parents who achieved remarkable success in their respective careers, she learned early on the value of determination and resilience. This foundation has been instrumental in shaping her approach to patient care and her commitment to fostering an environment of growth and support.

Throughout her career, Dr. Wingo has encountered pivotal moments that have reinforced her dedication to her

patients. One such moment occurred during a formative experience in Quito, Ecuador, where she witnessed firsthand the power of presence and empathy in difficult situations. This encounter underscored her belief in walking alongside her patients through both triumphs and challenges.

A Healing Heart

Dr. Sagun Shrestha offers hope in cancer care

Dr. Sagun Shrestha’s journey to becoming a medical oncologist has been one of dedication, sacrifice, and unwavering determination.

As a young medical student in India, Dr. Shrestha dreamed of making a difference in the lives of cancer patients. After completing her medical degree, she moved to the United States with her husband, both eager to pursue their medical careers. But the path wasn’t easy. She had to navigate the complexities of medical licensure, exams, and residency programs. “It was challenging,” Dr. Shrestha says. “But with the support of my husband and the determination to follow my passion, I persevered.”

Her resilience paid off. Dr. Shrestha completed her residency in Internal Medicine and then pursued a fellowship in medical oncology. It was during these years of training that she discovered her calling – to be a part of her patients’ journey, to offer them hope, and to provide compassionate care. “From surgical

oncology to radiation and medical oncology, we offer a multidisciplinary approach to treatment,” she says.

Chef Gross came up with the idea for the event when he was the chair of the American Institute for Food & Wine. “The pitch was, for most large events, the organization has to pay for the food and the wine. There’s also the organizational part where you have to get the dinners out all at once and of course, there’s rental, plates, tables, chairs,” he says. “My idea had all of those things covered. Each chef or restaurant brings the tables, chairs, plates, silverware, glassware, and cooks, of course, a quality dinner. Guests are attending a large event but having an experience like a restaurant.”

While Flavors started in Arizona, the concept has expanded to several locations around the country. This Phoenix event marks its return after a four-year hiatus due to COVID-19.

In addition to Gross, this year’s participating chefs include: Mark Tarbell, owner and chef of Tarbell’s; David Brito, executive chef of Geordie’s at Wrigley Mansion; Matt Carter, owner of Fat Ox, The Mission and Zinc Bistro; Rochell Daniel, owner and chef of Atria; Sara Garrant, executive chef of Michael Mina’s Bourbon Steak; Black Luecke, chef de cuisine of Uchi Scottsdale; and James Porter, chef and director of Terra Farm & Manor.

at the predinner reception and an eight-course fine dining experience at Christopher’s at Wrigley Mansion.

“I’ve always been impressed with the philanthropic spirit of the Arizona community,” says Lorraine Stiehl, CEO of the American Liver Foundation. “We are grateful for the support we have gotten over the past three decades and welcome the opportunity to raise awareness about liver disease.”

One of the goals of the American Liver Foundation is to advocate for early screening for liver disease. “One in three Americans have some form of fatty liver disease,” Stiehl says. “The liver is a neglected organ, and we need to break down the stigmas associated with liver disease. Sarah Byrne shares her colorful creations and passion for art education

Sarah Byrne was first exposed to fired ceramics in elementary school while growing up in Pinetop, Arizona. Little did she know that her first creation – a lidded box with a rose handle sculpted out of clay – would lead her on a lifelong love of the arts and, eventually, opening her business, AZ Art Pottery.

“Education was extremely important to my parents, and they believed that an arts education was just as important as English, math, and science,” Byrne says. “They encouraged curiosity, creativity and learning something new every day. I was exposed to the fine arts growing up and, maybe most importantly, I was given the tools to explore all types of art.”

Byrne went on to be an avid painter and artistic drawer growing up, but it wasn’t until her own children started school – she moved to Scottsdale with her husband in 1996 and has lived here most of her adult life – that she began taking pottery lessons and ceramics became a serious hobby. “My designs come from my life and my experiences, especially my childhood,” Byrne says. “I feel very fortunate that I get to spend my time doing what I love, and I think that shows in my work.”

Byrne received a degree in advertising from Northern Arizona University, and she also has a post-baccalaureate teaching certificate, though she never worked professionally in either of those fields. Her art education came from classes at community-funded art centers like Scottsdale Artists’ School and the Shemer Art Center. “Though I have taken many ceramic and sculpture classes from wonderful artists, I credit Peter Flynn [who teaches at Marjon Ceramics in Phoenix] with giving me a foundation in ceramics,” she says. “Peter is one of those highly talented artist instructors who make it possible to get a quality education outside of a university.”

Byrne’s hobby morphed into a career path in 2019 when she joined the Sonoran Arts League’s Board of Directors, with the goal of raising money for arts education, and was encouraged by other artists on the board to pursue art full time.

While her style is always evolving, Byrne describes it as “joyful, whimsical and uplifting,” and she enjoys creating sculptural, colorful pieces that tell a story. She uses a variety of methods to form her work, from the potter’s wheel and molds to forms and surface design.

Byrne’s work is available at The Finer Arts Gallery in Cave Creek and she exhibits as a member of the Sonoran Arts League at shows in their gallery in Carefree. Her biggest event of the year is the Sonoran Arts League’s Hidden in the Hills Artist Studio Tour. She especially likes Sonoran Arts League – which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year – due to its youth art education programs. She sits on the board and was instrumental in starting the Sonoran Arts League Studio at Stagecoach Village.

HOW DOES EXERCISE REDUCE THE RISK OF CANCER?

Exercises unleashes a series of physical reactions in the body, many of which are linked to cancer risk factors. They include those listed below.

The performance SUV only Ferrari could build

The idea that the traditional image of the iconic Prancing Horse badge would ever adorn anything other than an exotic two-seat, low-slung sports car completely defies physics and compromises the storied heritage and practicality of the Ferrari brand of impressive cars.

However, for the first time in its 75-year history and amid massive anticipation and caving to intense marketplace pressure, Ferrari has launched a four-door, four-seater SUV. Ferrari has wheeled out quite a few four-seaters in the past. The lineage started with the 250 GT/E, with others being introducing thereafter. The Purosangue literally translates from the Italian “pure” and “sang” to “pureblood” meaning “thoroughbred.”

It’s powered by a front-mid-mounted 6.5liter, 715-horsepower V12, which typically sends torque only to the eight-speed, dual-clutch rear transaxle, ensuring a super sporty, rear-drive character. The all-wheel drive (AWD) comes by way of a power takeoff and a two-speed gearbox that transfers torque to the front predictively when the dynamic controls sense slip at the rear. Notably, the AWD system does not engage the front wheel above fifth gear, which is to keep it feeling more like a sports car than an off-roader.

Suspension technology is Ferrari’s proprietary system. Using those dampers, it combines powerful 48-volt electric motor actuation with precise spool valve technology. Each damper is fitted with its own electric motor. The system is so powerful that the Purosangue does not feature antiroll bars. There’s also no off-road setting, rather the driver can switch between Ice, Wet, Comfort, Sport, and ESC OFF modes.

Inside, the Purosangue is the only Ferrari to offer legitimate room for four and it is kitted with a set of rear-hinged suicide rear doors to ease access to the back seat while retaining a coupe-like appearance. As expected, the interior is finished in over-the-top opulent Ferrari-quality materials and build quality. Most of the operating controls are handled through the steering wheel. A glass roof is optional.

In an ultraluxury segment packed with high-performance SUVS from Lamborghini, Bentley, Aston Martin and others, the Purosangue is the only single-trim, bespoke model in existence. Outdoor enthusiasts should consider starting their adventure at the Montauk Point Lighthouse, which President George Washington first authorized in 1792. Just southwest of the park is Ditch Plains, one of the premiere surfing destinations in the United States. Maple & Ash plays matchmaker for fruit and floral flavors with Illicit Affair

Maple & Ash is all about sweet and savory showmanship, both in its food and drink.

“Our cocktail program in particular embraces the idea of ‘drinking without limitations.’ Often, consumers find comfort in familiar cocktail choices, but we like to challenge norms and encourage guests to push their boundaries, both in flavor and presentation,” says Christina Demas, national spirits and brand director for Maple Hospitality Group.

Take Maple & Ash’s Illicit Affair ($21), for example.

“This vibrant cocktail starts with something very familiar for our guests in Grey Goose Vodka, which we like for its subtle notes of citrus, almond and apple,” Demas says. “We combine it with St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur, a floral spirit with pops of honeysuckle and pear that is familiar for some but might still be a bit intimidating to some guests at first blush.”

To weave in refreshing and slightly spicy notes, cucumber and basil are muddled in a tin with the spirits along with lemon juice.

“Before shaking, we also add in something more exotic in our dragon fruit puree,” Demas says. “It adds several layers of complementing flavors to the build, most notably kiwi, citrus and a touch more pear.”

Once shaken vigorously with ice, the velvety smooth magenta cocktail is double strained into a martini glass.

“Before serving, we finish the drink with an oversized artisan ice cube that has been intricately laser-engraved with a stunning rose design,” Demas says. “Funny enough, the original garnish was a spherical ice cube with a carnation encased within, but the popularity outpaced production.”

Thankfully, according to Demas, the new cube is as big of a hit with guests and much easier to produce daily to keep up with demand.

Crystal Kass, a 2024 James Beard Award nominee for Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker, leads the all-day pastry and evening dessert program at Valentine, where she is focused on elegant, modern sweets infused with Southwestern ingredients and flair.

What are some pastries and desserts at Valentine for which you are best known?

I am enamored with the art and science of lamination, which is the process used to make croissants. We always have a rotating croissant well worth trying, most recently filled with everything from mulberry jam and strawberries, to guava and cream. Our guest-favorite dessert is the churro croissant roll, but I am also partial to our Basque cheesecake and ice creams, especially recent flavors including corn and chocolate-jalapeno.

What inspired you to bake?

It is perfect that this is coming out in May, because I came to love baking – especially banana bread and chocolate chip cookies – by doing it with my mom when I was a child in my native Illinois. And while after high school I initially studied kinesiology, my happy place was always in the kitchen, so much so that I would eventually leave college to enroll in the French Pastry School in Chicago in 2012. It was the best decision I ever made.

How did you make your way to Valentine?

After graduating pastry school, I whet my teeth in professional kitchens in Chicago, notably Vanille Patisserie and Lovely Too: A Bakeshop, before doing what all Midwesterners do at some point: decide to move to the Valley. I moved to Arizona in 2014 and worked my way up at JW Marriott Camelback Inn Resort & Spa, Phoenix Public Market, Sweet Dee’s Bakeshop, and Persepshen before joining Valentine in 2021. I was named lead pastry chef in 2022.

What is something readers would be surprised to know about you?

I am an 80/20 vegetarian, meaning I am a vegetarian 80% of the time. However, I give myself grace 20% of the time, especially when chef Donald Hawk – our visionary at Valentine – has a nonvegetarian dish for me to sample.

In 17th-century France, the court would call its final dinner course “le fruit,” serving fruits and jams to guests to conclude the evening. During the French Revolution, however, the term “le fruit” was considered too pretentious and was replaced with “dessert.” While the term changed, the ingredients did not. Many modern desserts, especially those in the spring, continue to feature fruits prominently. Here are some local favorites.

In pre-Columbian Mexico, tepache was a sacred drink with aromatics. The magic behind this dessert is that as it bakes, it separates into two different textures. The top texture is fluffy, and the bottom is rich. When making the batter, egg yolks, sugar, lemon and flour are mixed to create the base of the cake, then egg whites and sugar are whipped to create fluffy, stiff peaks of meringue. During the bake, the meringue adheres to the flour and floats to the top, while the yolks mix with the sugar and lemon juice and drop to the bottom. Backyard Desert Ridge offers a dog-friendly bar, restaurant and entertainment pavilion all in one

The Corieri family – founders of Bottled Blonde, Casa Amigos, Chauncy Social, Hi-Fi Kitchen + Cocktails, RnR Gastro Pub, Sandbar Mexican Grill, and The Bevvy – has been shaping the Valley’s entertainment scene for more than 30 years.

And with their latest project, the family is hoping to get tails wagging and mouths watering. Now open, Backyard at Desert Ridge is an 8,000-square-foot dog-friendly, indoor-outdoor entertainment mecca with ample yard games, flatscreen televisions, and menus for both pups and their parents to enjoy. A feast for the eyes as much as for the tastebuds, the mostly open-air space is awash in vibrant hues mixed with wood, metal and grass accents. There are bold art installations, notably massive murals of dogs in one direction and a large-scale painting of a typical sunny day in Phoenix in another, as well as greenery thanks to several plants.

Sports fans need not struggle to catch any game as there are 45 flat screens inside and out as well as four 18-by-10-foot LED projection screens, which can also be used for weekend DJ and live music sets. Guests who would rather play games than

watch them can indulge in bags, Phoenix Suns-themed Pop-a-Shot, giant Jenga, Connect Four, and more to enjoy.

Executive chef Chris Kight, a veteran of both Enchantment Resort and Caesars Entertainment, is the architect of the menu. At lunch, starters and sandwich dominate the options, with early standouts including fried pickles, sticky ribs with gochujang barbecue sauce, a double-fried chicken sandwich, a Southwestern-inspired hot dog, and a hand-cut turkey wrap with bacon and Caesar dressing. There is also a selection of flatbreads from which to choose. For dinner, expect a good mix of light and hearty dishes, notably grilled shrimp with salsa verde and lime, homestyle meatloaf, roasted beets with toasted almonds, barbeque-grilled salmon with andouille sausage, and a family-style turkey pot pie. Of course, there are dog treats upon request, too.

The drink menu is a love letter to beer as there are 20 options on tap and another 20 by the bottle, including local favorites from Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co., The Shop Beer Co., Huss Brewing Co., Sonoran Brewing Co., Four Peaks Brewing Company, and more. There are several wines by the glass and bottle, and more than a dozen signature cocktails as well. The Desert Breeze Margarita, which boasts cactus as one of its ingredients, and High Tea, featuring notes of grapefruit, jasmine and pear, are especially lovely as the temperature rises. There is even a menu of shots, including options that taste like Cinnamon Toast Crunch and peanut butter and jelly. Four-legged friends may sip and savor as well thanks to a full pup-tails menu, too.

Backyard is open daily from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Happy hour is offered from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and brunch is served weekend days.
