color and care for fine hair
How to
Fine hair has plenty of benefits. It’s quick to dry and style, doesn’t shed as much as thicker hair and looks stunning when bobbed. However, fine hair is also more prone to breakage. That’s why Rodney Gentry at Sachi Studios advises paying particular attention to your hair care routine when you have fine hair. “With fine hair, the strands have a smaller diameter, which means they are more vulnerable to damage. As such, it’s important to care for your hair the right way. Avoid any unnecessary heat treatments and go easy on the amount of product you use, as you’ll simply weight the hair down.” There are plenty of ways in which those with fine hair can add volume. Dry shampoo can work wonders, as can volumizing powder. Curling the hair without heat – by using a curling donut, for example – can also deliver impressive results. It’s important to use shampoos, conditioners and hair masques designed specifically for fine hair, according to Rodney Gentry. “Using products that have been made with fine hair in mind should maximize protection for your hair while also not weighing it down. This becomes even more important when coloring the hair, as coloring can make the hair dryer and thus more prone to breakage.” Rodney Gentry advises using heat protector spray religiously before blow-drying or curling, while also minimizing washing to preserve the intensity of the color for as long as possible. Dry shampoo is a double win in this respect, as it keeps roots from becoming too oily between washes while also adding volume. Fine hair can look incredible when colored and styled professionally. Why not book an appointment Rodney Gentry to find out for yourself? Full-service designer and hair color specialist Rodney Gentry can be reached at Sachi Studios in Scottsdale, AZ. Call 480.639.2000 to make an appointment or visit www.rodneygentry.com for more information.

Welcome to our annual “man issue.” Given that the magazine typically covers more feminine topics—like women’s fashion, beauty products and more—it was refreshing to dedicate this issue to the guys. We’ve featured some fabulous local men. I interviewed the five men featured in the Philanthropy Powerhouses story that starts on page 58. These five individuals are all working to make the world a better place. It was inspiring to speak with people who have plenty of passion for their respective causes ranging from health care to homelessness. I hope you enjoy this feature. In the cover story, we’ve showcased long-time television personality and Scottsdale resident Javier Soto. Speaking of passion, Soto has dedicated his professional career to covering the news and even won an Emmy for his work. Learn more about his life and career on page 54. In Up Close on page 43, we’ve showcased the CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale, Ivan Gilreath. A former club kid himself, Gilreath knows first-hand just how important community is for young people, and it was fascinating to read more about his life and work. When it comes to interesting jobs, Joe Miller’s would be tough to top. He’s the director of wildlife for Director of Wildlife at the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort & Spa, and he works with birds of all stripes on property. Don’t miss the picture of him holding a real eagle on page 48. In Culture, we’ve profiled artist Steve Parks who creates outstanding mosaics. He also grew his business from his garage to a studio near Cattle Track Arts Compound. See his work on page 86. If you’re searching for ways to celebrate your dad on Father’s Day on June 19, be sure to read Out (page 84) and Lowdown (page 80) for local spots that are honoring fathers. Our Shop section is entirely dedicated to products for men. Find top-notch colognes (page 90), a variety of stylish sneakers (page 94), a sleek Saint Laurent croc embossed leather bifold wallet (page 89), one stylish linen suit and other accessories to elevate any ensemble (page 95) and my personal favorite, a selection of products and goods that would complete any man cave (page 92). Whether you’re a father or not, I hope that you feel appreciated during this month and especially in this issue. Here’s to the guys! All the best, Teresa K. April has a strong desire to share clean options for healthy optimal living. Today’s options are still so limited and what we intake has a huge effect on how we feel and look. Coffee for example is one of the most chemical-ridden products on the market. The Clean Counter has removed that area for concern and offers organic clean coffee. Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale CEO Ivan Gilreath knows that children need community
Like many people from the Midwest, Ivan Gilreath planned to move to Arizona to retire. His children already lived here, and once his youngest grandson was born, Gilreath and his wife, Rita, decided to give up the back-and-forth from Nebraska and make the move permanent. So, in 2019, Gilreath put in his
two-year notice with Boys & Girls Clubs of The Midlands, where he had been CEO since 2011. His plan was to retire in January 2021. He figured that two years would give him time to see through some initiatives that were in the works – including a scholarship program that,

Pulse UP CLOSE in 2020, awarded 65 scholarships worth $350,000 for Club members to pursue their college dreams – and to facilitate leadership continuity by helping to find and train his replacement. But Gilreath wouldn’t be able to ease into retirement. When the pandemic hit in 2020, families needed Boys & Girls Clubs more than ever. “COVID was like an out-of-body experience – for everyone,” he says. “Boys & Girls Clubs played a vital part in education during the pandemic. We were closed for a short period of time, but then we opened up for families of essential workers. We were there when kids needed somewhere to do classwork or homework.” The physical building may have been closed to the majority of members, but Gilreath and his team wanted to ensure that programming would still be available for those who needed it. The Virtual Online Interactive Club Experience (VOICE) gave members access to art, STEM, fitness, nutrition and other programs via Zoom. The organization guaranteed that every member family had access to an evening meal and a laptop, and hosted a Power Hour for homework help every night. As 2021 approached, with a new leader in place at Boys & Girls Clubs of The Midlands, Gilreath began to re-think his impending retirement. He visited the website for the Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits and found one job posting: CEO for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale. “It was like fate. When I logged on, the job had just been posted,” he says. “I thought, ‘I know Boys & Girls Clubs, I just have to learn the Scottsdale part.’”
A Mission Match Gilreath has a long history with Boys & Girls Clubs. Growing up in Omaha, Nebraska, he spent his formative years at what was then called the Boys Club. After graduating from the University of Nebraska, where he earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees, he spent 25 years in corporate life, at ING and Mutual of Omaha. Gilreath’s time at the Boys Club instilled in him the desire to help kids and give them a place to be and a chance to succeed, whatever their circumstances. In 1990, he cofounded the Midwest Trailblazers Youth Program, a nonprofit basketball and mentoring program that, to this day, provides academic support, cultural enrichment and more to its participants. “I knew that before my career was done, I wanted to work for something in that realm,” he says. “In 2011, when the opportunity came up for me to run the Boys & Girls Clubs in Omaha, I knew it was an immediate mission match.” While there, in addition to the aforementioned post-secondary scholarship program, Gilreath helped implement a literacy program that saw members improve their reading skills by two full grade levels if they started it in first grade. Whether in Nebraska or in Scottsdale, kids need Boys & Girls Clubs, according to Gilreath. In Nebraska, the 14 clubs that make up Boys & Girls Clubs of The Midlands are located in areas of financial need. There are

nine Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale, with branches in Scottsdale, North Phoenix, Fountain Hills, the Salt River PimaMaricopa Indian Community and the Hualapai Nation. Some are in what could be described as middle- to upper-class neighborhoods, while others are in lower-income communities. “Whatever their income level, kids need the Clubs. Some for different reasons. It’s a safe environment. Some need it because they need to eat. For some, their home life isn’t great, and they need positive role models or their own space. Others need it for the mental health aspects,” he says. “But the biggest value of the Club is that kids have somewhere to go. In the Clubs, you can be productive and avoid the temptations that come when you’re just hanging out on the streets.”
On the Horizon Now that he’s in Scottsdale, Gilreath wants to help bring enrollment in Boys & Girls Clubs back up to pre-pandemic levels, add programs like maker spaces and STEAM centers like the one at Virginia G. Piper Branch in the Scottsdale Ranch neighborhood and implement exploratory programming to supplement the traditional services. Gilreath knows that the academic and healthy lifestyle programs offered by Boys & Girls Clubs are essential, but what keeps kids coming back is one thing: the people who work there. “A lot of our employees used to be Club kids, and they know what the Club meant to them. They have that ‘mission match’ too. They love what they do and love impacting lives,” he says. “My goal is to serve more families and get more kids in a position where they can be healthy, productive members of the community.”

Shedding New Light on Toenail Fungus BY GREER BANKS
e all know what it looks like. The nail can become thick, is sometimes deformed, and may separate from the toe and a yellowish, crumbly material can form under it. It can be unsightly, uncomfortable and embarrassing. “This goes beyond just a medical condition,” says Dr. Shah Askari of CIC Foot & Ankle. “Nail fungus can impact your daily living; from the type of shoes you wear to going barefoot to feeling comfortable swimming.” While nail fungus most likely will not cause any other serious health problems, it can be painful and make it difficult to wear certain shoes. In the past, toenail fungus has been a very difficult condition to treat. “The nails on our toes not only provide protection from injury but provide an effective barrier against infection,” says Dr. Askari. He explains, “But once a fungus becomes entrenched, the same barrier that was effective in protecting against infection, now works to protect the fungus. This
makes it difficult to treat because it is hard to reach.” Past treatments include antifungal creams, lotions and nail polish. These topical medications have a low success
“Nail fungus can impact your daily living; from the type of shoes you wear to going barefoot.” rate and can take up to a year to show any improvement in the condition of the nail. “Oral medications are available, but they can put your liver at risk and do not have a high level of success,” says Dr. Askari. “There can be serious side effects from these pills, and blood tests are necessary to monitor your liver
function while you are taking them.” And unfortunately, they may not get rid of the infection. Dr. Askari is very excited about how an FDA approved, low-level laser is helping to treat this pervasive problem. This therapy operates under the principle of photochemistry by enhancing the natural processes of the immune system and impacting the structural integrity of the fungal strain. “It appears that the laser therapy provides a mechanism to effectively treat clinical mycosis, which is the infection,” says Dr. Askari. The laser does not impact healthy tissue and the treatment is painless. “This therapy is an exciting breakthrough for people with infected, painful, thick, or discolored toenails,” says Dr. Askari. His patients have been discouraged in the past, but laser is offering them new hope. Dr. Askari can be reached at (480) 860-6455.

Interior designer Matthew Boland wants his clients to feel right at home
BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE
Interior designer Matthew Boland of Scottsdalebased MMB Studio knows that the key to his success—MMB Studio has been in business for 17 years— is through getting to know his clients. “They are my muses and the only way that I can do my job correctly is to really get inside of their world and their brain,” he says. “Some clients have been told they have bad ideas or that they don’t have style. These are the clients I gravitate towards. Everyone has style and everyone has ideas, and if you have the right partner to help you execute them the result will mirror the client, not the designer.” No two clients are the same, and no two MMB Studio spaces ever look the same. “My favorite part of my job is the people,” says Boland, who worked on Cher’s former Beverly Hills estate. “Relationships with clients, relationships with other designers and architects, relationships with everyone that touches and helps you realize all of the amazing spaces that become homes.” His projects are located throughout the United States, Mexico and Canada, but his local ties run deep. He was raised in Paradise Valley and attended Brophy College Preparatory. After studying historic preservation and interior architecture on the East Coast, Boland’s first decade in interiors was under the guidance of Jim Harris at J.W. Harris Inc. in Phoenix. In 2005, House Beautiful magazine named him one of “America’s Top Young Designers.” This national nod inspired him to open his own design firm. The same year, he wanted to interview for a notable project but needed his own studio to be considered, and MMB Studio was born. Boland got the commission, and he was published with the architects Ethan and Sarah Wessel of Tennen Studio in Architectural Digest in 2008. Living and working in Scottsdale provides Boland with a melting pot of inspiration. “I love that as a resort town there are people from all over the world that spend time here during the year for all different reasons,” he says “Scottsdale is as exciting or as restful as you choose it to be.”

EAGLE EYE
Joe Miller is devoted to caring for Arizona’s winged warriors
BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE
When it comes to interesting jobs, Joe Miller’s would be hard to top. He’s the director of wildlife at the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort & Spa. Why would a resort employ a director of wildlife? Because many of the larger birds he works with keep the smaller animals away—giving guests a quieter, more relaxing experience. Miller is a lifelong wildlife advocate. “I have been enamored since I was 15 years old when I met a wolf. The experience touched my heart,” he says. Miller often trains eagles that were too badly injured to survive on their own at Liberty Wildlife, a wildlife rehabilitation and education foundation in Phoenix. Today, Miller visits the Hyatt almost daily with his rescued birds of prey, including hawks, owls and even a bald eagle. He assists the resort by modifying the behaviors of birds on the property while introducing his rescued friends to resort guests. “I enjoy educating guests and visitors on wildlife and helping them take home unforgettable memories. By strolling around with my birds of prey, I’m able to keep smaller birds at bay, providing a more enjoyable experience at the resort,” he says. Besides offering photo opportunities with the impressive creatures and sharing his animal knowledge, Miller has led a Birds of Prey Take Flight program every Friday for guests to get an up-close and personal experience with the winged warriors for the past 15 years. “I have been motivated to be ‘Eagle Joe’ by the kind spirits I find in the animals I spend my days with,” Miller says. “The biggest female bald eagle I have will only work with me – it’s sweet!” The Scottsdale resident has spent the past 35 years as an eagle trainer and is currently training two more rescued eagles. “I’m excited to work with them and hopefully introduce them to resort guests soon,” he says. Nurturing the nature of Arizona through wildlife rehabilitation is at the heart of Miller’s mission. “Be kind to animals and remain fascinated by them,” he says. “Be a positive, passionate and enjoyable person, and donate your time and heart to volunteering.”

FATHER KNOWS BEST Seth Carter is rewriting the rules of dad style BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY
Audiovisual professional Seth Carter is out to prove that dad style—which typically gets a bad rap—is actually dapper. The husband and father to two-yearold, Chloe, has established a dress code for himself. His daily uniform subtly varies from day to day but ultimately consists of the same base pieces — nice jeans and a loud golf-inspired shirt. Like his job as executive account manager at Sound Effects, Carter’s style isn’t lacking interesting elements. He frequently gleans inspiration from his travels, and he isn’t afraid to throw off-the-wall patterns and prints into the mix. Working in the A/V field allows him to show off his easy-going personality through his seemingly simple style. The key to Carter’s style—and what makes it so interesting—is his fondness for color and over the top socks. When he pairs those bold pieces with dress boots plus a Bad Birdie button down, it’s a look that emanates an effortless cool.
What is your day-to-day look? We wear a lot of company T-shirts and polos, but I’ll wear a fun Bad Birdie tee to mix it up and make an impression. I try not to over complicate things. That goes for designing a clients A/B system and my outfit. I find that if I keep it casual, my clients can let their guard down. What is your must-have item when it comes to fashion? A nice fitting, comfortable pair of jeans because you can dress them up or down - very versatile What is the most prized possession in your closet? My collection of crew neck T-shirts. Not only because they’re comfortable, but because they can be worn to multiple types of events.

SUNNY DISPOSITION Stylist Jess Johnson sports chic, colorful and cheerful looks
BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY
Jess Johnson knows that no outfit is complete without confidence. As a stylist at Anthropologie at Kierland Commons, she inspires her clients to find their own style while curating her own colorful, yet chic wardrobe. The key to Johnson’s cheerful style? Separates. “You basically double your options with separates,” she says. Johnson focuses on well-constructed, functional garments and accessories that fit well. “I love Levi’s and Agolde for denim, Birdies Swan slides and classic New Balance 574 sneakers for comfort, Yummie bodysuits and Grayson for button-ups,” she says. Johnson often takes cues from colorful sources including paint sites like SherwinWilliams to spark unusual color combinations and Pantone to track color trends. With a knack for styling dresses or skirts with graphic T-shirts and sneakers, Johnson often mixes patterns and incorporates masculine details. “I’m a big fan of the white menswear shirt and ball gown skirt look that Sharon Stone made popular in the ‘90s,” she says.
What is your must-have item when it comes to fashion? Denim that fits well. We all feel like a million bucks in great jeans. That and proper undergarments, because it’s the foundation for everything else. What will we see you in on weekends versus workdays? When I’m not working, I’m sporting athleisure from Spanx, Sundry and Sweaty Betty. I’m a third-generation graduate of Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama. Tigers apparel, especially baseball caps, are a must. How does working at Anthropologie influence your style? I get to see all the trends come in. I’m cautious to not style clients to look like copies of me, but instead as the best version of themselves. I use different lenses to view the apparel choices as they arrive. I keep in mind alternate colors, prints and fabrics of styles and silhouettes.

POWER of the PRESS Television personality Javier Soto on his passion for news
Javier Soto’s love for his job is contagious, a well-known fact to regular viewers of Good Morning Arizona. But he didn’t always know he was destined for a career in news – the Emmy Award-winning journalist originally hoped to make it big in Hollywood. But during the last year of earning his film degree at California State University, Long Beach – Steven Spielberg’s alma mater – Soto came to understand that the industry wasn’t the perfect fit he’d thought it would be. While the Spielbergs of the world are able to pursue their passion projects, the “little guys” like him have to hunt for a new job every few months.

“My thought was, ‘I can’t live like this, constantly on the grind looking for my next job – I’ve gotta eat,’” says Soto. He had always been intrigued by news, switched his major and began an internship with KTLA in Los Angeles under the mentorship of decorated reporter Gayle Anderson. “I was still going to school and bartending at night, then getting up at 2 a.m. to go to the station,” Soto says. “I always say, ‘I didn’t know anything but how to work hard.’ I was so blessed to be taken under Gayle’s wing. She gave me a chance and showed me what news was all about.” When his internship was nearly over, Soto asked his bosses if he could continue beyond his original end date, but instead they offered him a full-time job as a producer. Soto threw himself into his career, hoping to break into the Los Angeles market as a reporter. “I put together news packages and live shots, kept trying and trying and trying. I swore I was going to get hired – and I didn’t,” he says. But Soto was not about to give up on his dream. He knew he was meant to be a journalist, a belief that was only solidified during 9/11.
56
So Scottsdale! June ‘22
Soto was a working as a production assistant one early morning in L.A. when the first plane crashed into the Twin Towers. “At the time, there was a lot of confusion. While we were live, the second plane hit and there was nothing but silence in the newsroom. Then immediately people were out the doors, making calls, everybody on the same mission to find out what was happening,” he says. When he left the station that night, there was no traffic on the 405 Freeway, something he’d never seen in all his years in Southern California. “At that point I realized that when the rest of the world stopped, I kept going,” says Soto. “That’s how I describe news, and that’s how I knew I was in love.”
A Stint in the Gem State After three years with KTLA, Soto was finally presented with a job opportunity, but it was a far cry from his native California. “I got a call from a station in Pocatello, Idaho. We had a great conversation – while I was looking up Pocatello, Idaho, wondering where it was,” he says. At the end of the call, Soto asked the news director to hire
him, but when she offered that he visit the station first to see if it would be a good fit, Soto told her no. “I said, ‘I work in Hollywood, I’m loving life. I worry that if I come visit, I’m going to turn you down. But if you hire me now, I promise I’ll be the best worker you ever have.’ Three weeks later, I’m driving into Idaho thinking, ‘What the hell did I just do?!’” Over the course of his two-year contract in Pocatello, Soto made his on-camera debut in addition to producing his own segments, learning to edit and even took out the trash between shows. Turns out Pocatello, with its population of around 50,000, was the perfect place to learn the ins and outs of the news industry. “At a great station with a market size of 167, it was all right there – unless you were looking to have a good social life,” he says. And Soto’s dedication to his work paid off. While reporters typically aim to cut their market size in half with each subsequent job – going from a market size of around 160 to one of 80, then 40 after another few years of hard work – Soto received an offer from channel 3 and made a huge jump to a market size of 15.
Although Soto frequents plenty of restaurants, some of his top choices are The Mission, Café Monarch, The Americano Restaurant and Lo-Lo’s Chicken & Waffles.
Early Birds Get the Emmy
Drawn to Arizona’s diverse natural beauty and thriving culinary scene, Soto started at 3TV’s station in Flagstaff before being promoted to the main station, where he found a home on Good Morning Arizona in 2007. As someone who places high value on kindness, Soto was excited to join a team that not only informs its viewers, but spreads joy through segments like the Surprise Squad and the Pay it Forward Contest. “We’ve all been through a lot in the past couple of years,” Soto says. “When you do things for the community, it’s always reciprocated tenfold, by someone
expressing what it meant to them, giving a hug or a ‘thank you.’” The Scottsdale resident has lived here for over a decade, and says he loves the many options that the city offers. “If you want culture and the arts, Scottsdale has a thriving art scene. If you’re a foodie, there are some of the best chefs in the country right here. The bar and nightclub scene is always happening, and if you’re an outdoor enthusiast, head father north for some of the best hiking. However, you can’t talk about Scottsdale without discussing some of the best shopping in the nation,” he says.
Today, Soto wakes up at 2 a.m. to catch up on the news before going live weekdays at 4:30 a.m. During his 17 years in Arizona, Soto has covered countless major events, from Jodi Arias’ trial to Senate Bill 1070, but one recent story stands out in his mind. While Soto and his fellow anchors were live one morning in 2020, they received word that smoke was billowing from a railroad bridge over Tempe Town Lake. They dropped all commercials and put everyone on the story, with members of Arizona’s Family among the first reporters on the scene. Despite all the damage, no one was hurt in what they later learned was a train derailment. And the remarkable efforts of the Good Morning Arizona team earned them an Emmy Award – Soto’s first. “It’s been a long time coming!” Soto jokes, adding that getting to where he is in his career has required a lot of sacrifice. “My mom and sisters are still in SoCal, and though I talk to them often, I’ve missed my nephews growing up. When I give talks to college and high school kids, I like to start by asking, ‘Who likes Christmas? Who likes money? Who’s in love?’ Because in this business, you’re not going to see a holiday for years, you’re probably not going to make a lot of money for years, and I don’t care how in love you are, the odds of someone following you to Pocatello, Idaho are very slim.” At the end of the day, Soto says, it comes down to how much you want it, especially since the media has received greater scrutiny in recent years. “If nothing else, it should inspire us to be better. As long as you’re balanced and put in the effort to make sure your I’s are dotted and your T’s are crossed, you’re going to leave journalism in a better place,” Soto says. “If I knew what I know now when I was back in film school, I’d do it time and time again. There are so many rewards – from the little things, like writing a great sentence, to the people we help, sometimes just by making someone’s day brighter. I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else.” So Scottsdale! June ‘22

Skyler Badenoch CEO at Hope for Haiti
Scottsdale native Skyler Badenoch got started in philanthropy when he joined the Peace Corps after graduating from the University of Arizona. He was volunteering in a rural remote village on West Africa’s Ivory Coast. That experience proved to be the foundation of his professional career. “It taught me a lot about culture and learning languages and really coming in as a listener first. And that's really developed my leadership style, just to be able to be a listener first and really understand the situation before trying to make any assumptions,” says Badenoch. “We have a situation where there's a lot of intelligent people in the world today, they just don't have the same opportunity as we are luckily afforded. Something I became passionate about was how we bridge that opportunity gap.” Post Peace Corps, he decided to pursue a graduate degree in international development studies at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. After earning his master’s degree, he spent 10 years with an organization called buildOn. He ran programs and raised funds to help build schools in developing countries like Haiti, Nicaragua, Senegal and Mali. Five years ago, he moved back to Scottsdale and was approached about being the CEO of Hope for Haiti. Hope for Haiti is a nonprofit that strives to alleviate poverty in Haiti and improve health care in addition to access to clean water, education and opportunity. He travels all over to meet with donors and work in Haiti, a country that is recovering from a devastating earthquake that happened in 2021. Locally, he serves on the board of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale. He says he finds three things about his work inspiring. One is the purpose of Hope for Haiti, which is to provide opportunity. Second, it’s the people he works with. Third, “it's rewarding to be able to say that in places where a lot of people don't think things are possible, we can prove them wrong. We can prove ourselves. We can help improve the quality of life,” he says. “We can do things that are incredibly challenging, and I like that. I think that's just something that speaks to me and inspires me.” Visit www.hopeforhaiti.com to learn more.

Jared A. Langkilde President and CEO of the HonorHealth Foundation
Jared A. Langkilde got his start in philanthropy by volunteering with the United Way. Like many who gravitate towards philanthropy, Langkilde wanted to do something with his life that mattered. “One of the greatest losses in life is potential, especially human potential. And so I wanted to do something that would help those around me,” he says. “Really live a life that was full of meaning, purpose and of consequence. Indeed, a life of significance that I could look back after a 30-year career and say that ‘I mattered. And what I did helped people become their best selves.’” Prior to joining the HonorHealth Foundation, he worked in the Mesa Community College system for 21 years. He led all the philanthropic efforts at the community college. “We had grown that program to having the most number of alumni giving to their alma mater for any community college in the country,” he says. He was approached by his predecessor at HonorHealth about taking over his current job. He decided to wait two years for retirement benefit purposes. Once that time was up, he was interviewed by the foundation’s board and landed the job. In his current role, he fundraises for the foundation’s many different programs and motivates the staff around him. “I’m constantly communicating, motivating, inspiring and helping people to see that number one, this is the most exciting time ever, in all of human history, to be involved in health care,” he says, due to scientific advancements. “Philanthropy can make sure that the right things are getting done for the right reasons, and we’re very fortunate that every dollar goes towards the donor’s intended cause. We don’t charge any fees to any of their gifts.” What does he attribute to his success in fundraising? By focusing on others. “By modeling best practices and empowering people and motivating people to have the best career of their life and to do their best work and to seize the day with the time that we all have together. To do the most good,” he says. “When you get out of people’s way and let them shine and leverage the expertise and experience that they’ve come with, their potential is limitless.” Visit www.honorhealthfoundation.org to learn more.

Ronen Aviram
Board Chair of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central & Northern Arizona Ronen Aviram initially got involved with the Ronald McDonald House Charities when he was in Dallas. He was helping cook meals for families staying at the charities while their children, typically, are undergoing medical treatments. Most families stay at these houses for weeks at a time and are provided with complimentary housing and food. When he saw how much those meals affected the residents, he knew he wanted to continue with the charity. “You see the stress kind of oozing out of them with a really great meal, and so that was my passion,” says Aviram. After working as the general manager of the Swissotel Chicago, he returned to Scottsdale in August of 2016. Aviram is the vice president and general manager of Scottsdale’s Hotel Valley Ho, and he was searching for a charitable organization the hotel could focus on. “The mission and taking care of families, providing them a great place to stay and helping them during a difficult time is important. But there’s also a lot of consistency and operations between a hotel environment and what the Ronald McDonald House does,” he says. After all, hotels provide lodging, meals and offer a place of respite, just like a Ronald McDonald house does. “I can always provide assistance from an expertise perspective,” he says. “It was a no-brainer to do it … I really enjoy the camaraderie and the just the passion for the people that are on the board.” He’s been on the board for four years and is currently the board chair for 2022. In that role, he helps in any way he can. This includes driving recruitment, fundraising, organizing events and participating in long-term strategic planning, messaging and branding. Two events he spearheaded were the organization’s gala and golf tournament. He said they were more profitable than ever before under his guidance. He also helps finds organizations to cook meals at the three Valley houses. “It’s a blessing to be able to be put in a position to help people out. As a parent, there’s nothing worse when your child is sick, and you want to help them out,” says Aviram. “It’s selfishly so rewarding.” Visit www.rmhccnaz.org for more information.

Howard Epstein
Founder of the Arizona Housing Fund
Howard Epstein has been fighting the issue of homelessness for about 25 years. Many who are looking for low-income housing are often on waiting lists that are at least six-months long. “The housing issue has a solution: We need more units,” says Epstein. He started the Arizona Housing Fund to provide private funds to help nonprofits and local governments build and provide housing for vulnerable populations. One of the ways the fund collects money is by asking the brokerage community to request that individuals who are buying, selling or refinancing homes donate. “We’re narrowly focused on three things: One, is we’re providing equity grants to nonprofits who do this. Two, it’s got to be for bringing new inventory, new units, new stock to our cities that need it. Three, it’s real emphasis on helping the most vulnerable. Think of people who are living in emergency shelters or transitional shelters or worse, living unsheltered on the streets or in their car,” he says. Epstein first got involved in this issue through Central Arizona Shelter Services (CASS). Epstein is a national executive of real estate asset sales at Bank of America, a company that supports CASS. The then CEO of Bank of America asked Epstein to serve on the board of CASS, and he agreed. “I didn’t know it would lead to a 25-year effort, but it’s a fight I’m willing to fight,” he says. “If I didn’t do this, I don’t know if anybody would.” He says that it’s inspiring to see how many others are willing to help out. “It just warms your heart to see that everybody wants to be part of the solution,” he says. One woman gave the fund $75,000. The fund has just crossed the $1 million mark. In the next 10 to 15 years, Epstein hopes to raise $100 million. “If you can’t feed yourself or put a roof over your head, I’m not sure what else matters,” he says. “These are people who, they find a sense of community and care, and they feel safe. You walk around and you meet the tenants, and you go, ‘Gosh, we’re saving lives. That’s the beauty of it. That’s why I’m in it.” Visit www.arizonahousingfund.org to learn more.

Ben Vega
Philanthropy Officer at Phoenix Children’s Hospital Foundation After the pandemic forced everyone to stay at home in March of 2020, Ben Vega took time to reflect on his career. Vega had been working at a real estate investment firm while volunteering with Scottsdale’s 20/30 Club. His wife told him she felt that he was happier fundraising and doing children’s charity work. She suggested a career change. “I spent that summer reinventing myself and looking at what was out there,” he says. He found Steve Schnall, the senior vice president and chief development officer at Phoenix Children’s Hospital (PCH). He was hired in January of 2021 and has never looked back. As a philanthropy officer with the Phoenix Children’s Hospital Foundation, Vega is responsible for working with individual donors. “What I’m doing at the end of the day is forming those relationships to tell them about PCH. What we’re doing in the community, what the needs of the community are and how the hospital is trying to meet those needs,” he says. North Scottsdale resident Vega is the father to a one-year-old daughter, and says he sees how much these families love their children but how understandably scared they are following a diagnosis or accident. “The foundation of the hospital, really at their core, is they want to inspire hope for families and for their patients. Children really need a voice. They need someone to advocate for them in all areas of their life,” he says. “What PCH does, it’s beyond just mending the illness or the incident, it’s really bringing parents hope.” One of his proudest achievements is spearheading a mental health campaign. “It’s something that is invisible. It’s something that’s quiet. It’s something that’s not seen, and yet it touches almost every life here in the Valley and the nation. How do we really get ahead of this? What do we do?,” he says. What he loves most about his job is working with other people. “At the very core of what my job is, it’s really connecting with people,” he says. “I love it because then it’s like I’m bringing someone on to our team and we’re working together, and it’s a partnership.” Visit www.phoenixchildrensfoundation.org for more information.

Times Change, But His Mission Doesn’t
Shahe Koulloukian strives to debunk the dishonest mechanic stereotype
N
o one embodies the phrase “man of many talents” quite like Shahe Koulloukian. He’s the owner of Mazvo Car Care Center, which he opened in 1996 — but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. He’s got over a dozen movie credits under his belt, an extensive history in the culinary industry, has lived on three different continents, and speaks six languages fluently. Now he can add published author to that list, as his first book, Car Confidential, is soon to be released: an enlightening guide full of insider secrets about automobile ownership, car maintenance, and road safety. His is a fascinating life, woven with multiple cultural influences, but Koulloukian remains a modest man who is passionately dedicated to the service of others. His business, Mazvo, was built on the premise that the customer matters more than the bottom line, and he prides himself on establishing trusting relationships by being open and transparent. Beyond that, though, is the empowerment and
education Koulloukian gives Mazvo’s clientele; through the free classes he offers twice yearly, anyone is welcome to learn all about the basics of auto care and what to do in the case of a roadside emergency. Of course, his door is always open when it comes to offering professional advice to Mazvo’s clients, from diagnostics to second opinons — it’s one of the things he’s most passionate about, the cornerstone of his business. And when the pandemic shifted nearly every aspect of car buying, selling, and owning, people had a lot of questions. With a keen knowledge of the ever-changing auto industry, Koulloukian was ready with honest answers. One of the questions he receives most frequently is this: with the car buying market the way it is, should I sell my vehicle? Koulloukian’s advice is to pause and audit what you own, evaluating the value that your current vehicle provides. Add up all your current vehicle car repairs for the last 3 years, then divide by 36; if your average number is under $300, you
should consider keeping your car until the bubble pops. New car payments, regardless of your credit score, will be above $500.00 — not to mention insurance costs on a newer vehicle. It's useful and insightful advice like this, regarding all things auto-related, that has helped Koulloukian and Mazvo Car Care earn a sterling reputation in the community and turn the old “dishonest mechanic” trope around. The only way to keep customers coming back is a trusting relationship and quality service, both of which Koulloukian is proud to provide in spades. Mazvo’s clients love the security of knowing they’ve got a mechanic who isn’t in it to swindle them — and, in fact, who strives to do the exact opposite. At the heart of Koulloukian’s business is education, empowerment, and awareness, because as he likes to say, “It’s only dangerous if you don’t know.” Contact Mazvo at 602.248.8711 or www.mazvo.com; 4610 North 7th Street, Phoenix, AZ 85014.

ndre Vicario is the founder and CEO of Mod Jets, a modern luxury jet charter service designed to deliver an unforgettable flying experience for their customers. Andre was surrounded at an early age by entrepreneurs who inspired him. "My story starts from a very humble yet entrepreneurial background. I was fortunate to have the experience of my parents surrounding me with their friends who owned their own businesses. This had a direct and life lasting impact on me. They became my inspiration to drive me to become the serial entrepreneur I am today and continue this legacy to help others achieve their entrepreneurial dream," he says. Although there are many jet charter services, Andre reveals what sets Mod Jets apart from the competition is how they deliver a dreamlike experience when flying with the company. "This was born from personal experience as a client of charter services. In addition, I have the unique privilege of having the perspective
of owning multiple planes myself. This has given me the rare insight to create a value proposition for the plane owners and our clients through taking incredible care of all the stakeholders from the pilots to the owners and the people we cater to," he shares. Further, Mod Jets does what others are not willing to do to provide a lifestyle most aspire to achieve. Providing an elevated level of service and attention to the little things will create repeat customers." Like every entrepreneur, Andre has many inspirations he draws on to drive him to achieve success. "I am inspired by my family. I want them to be proud of what I have accomplished and take it to another level. I want them to see what hard work can provide as well as the challenges along the way,” he says. Purpose and Power
Jeff Christenson harnesses the challenges of money management
W
ealth Advisor Jeff Christenson is a man who never lets anything hold him down. After experiencing the roughest health year of his life including major surgeries and hospitalizations, Jeffery was down, but definitely not out. Built on the encouragement he received from family, friends and clients, he was able to heal and leave all of the setbacks in the dust. Jeff is the founder of his name’s sake wealth management firm where he focuses on helping high-net worth clients including entrepreneurs, real estate developers, and entertainers exceed their financial goals. What sets Jeff apart is his specialization in implementing strategies outside the norm from what people are typically discussing with an investment professional. “A big part of it is tax strategy,” he shares. “Often times we utilize investment deals built by life insurance companies.” Jeff has found that many advisors are reluctant to discuss the vast investment and retirement options that insurance
companies can provide because it is not something they work with on a regular basis. Another investment vehicle is a strategy called premium financing. This approach permits clients to maintain flexibility in their cash flow and to keep capital deployed in higher-yielding assets without having to liquidate those assets to pay for the policy. “When I first got in the business, a wise person told me that there are 2 tax codes in this country - one for the informed, and one for the uninformed,” he reveals. In addition to his creativity, he’s received praise for his natural ability to take complex financial scenarios and simplify them for his clients. Beyond helping people build, keep, and manage their wealth, Jeff strives to spread the same level of encouragement he received when he needed it the most. “Encouragement can provide people with the strength to look ahead, move forward, and reach for the next goal,” he says.
“Everyone needs to be encouraged about something.” At a recent industry meeting Jeff presented on the power of positivity and the lasting effects of praise. Besides being a dedicated husband and father, Jeff is devoted to helping other financial advisors expand their businesses by sharing his specialty knowledge and collaborating with others in his field. He’s considered a master connector, thrives on building relationships, and understands that each client comes with different personalities, goals and interests. Jeff was listed in WORTH Magazine’s national list of Leading Wealth and Legal Advisors and often contributes to the highly regarded publication. He stresses that encouragement through times of adversity, when things seem to be at their worst, can be enough to pull people through and put them onto a path of greater achievement and growth. Unparalleled Representation Chey Castro is focused on luxury real estate
C
hey Castro of the Chey Castro Group has resided in North Scottsdale for over 20 years and says his passion for luxury real estate grew from his time as a student at Arizona State University. After graduating with a finance degree, he went on to study at the University of Notre Dame, earning a master's degree in accounting. From there, he worked as a Senior Auditor for Ernst & Young working his way up to Senior Financial Analyst for DMB Associates, a real estate developer focused on high-end master-planned communities, which ultimately sparked his interest in real estate. "Realizing a 9 to 5 was not for me; my career in luxury real estate began from humble beginnings working as a sales assistant with Silverleaf Realty," he says. With his extensive background and experience, Chey forged his own path to form the Chey Castro Group. "To build a successful practice, it's all about building strong relationships and doing
things with the right intentions,” he shares. “While technically anyone with a real estate license can sell real estate and be transactional, those who form reliable connections in the industry and their communities will ultimately be the most successful. Clients want to work with people who they like, know, and trust.” As a proud Arizona Native, Chey's knowledge of the valley’s market gives him an advantage over many others. However, Chey draws inspiration from a higher source. "Life felt purposeless before coming into the understanding of a personal relationship with God; now, He is my inspiration and reason for working with integrity. Live for something greater than yourself. Find a goal, a dream, and a vision, and work for a purpose. Now I find my joy and peace from God, and not from a sale," he says. With an unwavering commitment to his clients, Chey consistently communicates before, during, and after transactions to provide them with a true white-glove luxury experience. Chey also
has a unique ability to collaborate and work well with other agents to ensure that his client’s needs are best served every time. Through his hard work, Chey has been recognized as a 40 under 40 award winner from both the Phoenix Business Journal and the Scottsdale Association of Realtors. Chey’s been a DC Ranch Country Club member for the past ten years and when he’s not working, you can find him perfecting his golf game. “Golf is my favorite hobby in that it reveals true character in myself and mirrors life by teaching you to move on when you get a bad break,” Chey shares. With 15 years under his belt and having become one of the more prominent Luxury Realtors in Arizona, clients can rest assured they're in the best hands when they partner with the Chey Castro Group. The Jeweler of the Valley
Frank Isaac handcrafts jewelry with extraordinary care
F
rank Isaac, owner for Isaac Jewelers, will be celebrating 20 years at his current Kierland Commons location in 2023. Specializing in luxury jewelry, fine Swiss timepieces, and one of a kind custom designs, Frank Isaac and Isaac Jewelers have become synonymous as leaders in superior artistry and customer service. A true visionary, it was Frank’s decision to move his jewelry store on Main Street in Old Town Scottsdale to the beautiful storefront in Kierland Commons in 2003. Today, Isaac Jewelers is one of the largest diamond wholesalers in the valley. “We get our diamonds directly from the source in Israel and bring them to Scottsdale. We sell bridal, watches, fashion jewelry and custom one-of-a-kind designs,” he says. Although the supply of Rolex watches may have been disrupted by production and supply chain issues, Frank has over 45 new or gently worn fine watches in store.
Each of Isaac Jewelers designs has their own concepts and characteristics. Fusing traditional accents with modern fashion, Isaac is the only Smart Cut diamond dealer in Arizona. “Smart Cut diamonds are diamonds 23% larger by the table- so our 1 carat diamond looks like 1.25 carats but you pay the price by weight not by measurement,” Frank says. His custom designs take between 2-3 weeks from start to finish and the store carries more than 30 brands in the 4,000 square foot showroom. According to Frank, this season calls for a diamond stretch bracelet or ring. Whether revitalizing a jewelry collection or splurging on a new accessory Isaac Jewelers is excited to showcase these sparkling pieces that can be dressed up or down. “A band of glistening diamonds around the wrist is eye-catching and looks stunning no matter the time of day,” he says. “Thanks to their versatility, it's easy to match with other luxury jewelry pieces.” Besides crafting jewelry, Isaac
Jewelers also has a long tradition of giving back to the community. The store frequently provides gift baskets and jewelry for nonprofit fundraisers and has raised money for charities including Family Promise of Great Phoenix, The Gentry Foundation, Save the Family Foundation of AZ, Breast Cancer Research Foundation, and Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Building strong family, employee and customer relationships combined with outstanding customer service will allow Isaac Jewelers to thrive well into the future. “Our approach to clients is to truly treat them as family and we know them by name plus our quality and prices are great and beyond fair,” he says. With all of his success, Frank will continue to work from the heart, treat people with respect, and maintain his reputation as The Jeweler of the Valley. The restaurant industry, with its long hours and ups and downs, needs leaders like Jason with a passion for what they do. He loves dealing with his clientele and has many special customers whom he’s cultivated lifelong friendships with along the way. “I hang out with some of them outside of the Nick’s doors and I’m so grateful for the relationships we’ve built over the years,” he says.
Jason understands that he’s only as good as his staff and the customers who support them which is why Nick’s operates with a family mentality. Although working in food and beverage is not always easy, he will always find a way to make things right. He knew early on that he was not cut out to sit behind a desk from 9-5 and it brings him joy to interact with so many different people on a daily basis. “No two days in this business will ever be the same,” he attests. After losing his dad in 2004 around the time he started working with Nick, Jason considers Nick a father figure to him. “People always think we’re father and son and he’s watched me grow into the man I’ve become,” he shares. Jason credits Nick with teaching him about the industry. “We have two completely different work styles but that’s what makes us who we are. We do a lot together outside of the restaurant which has helped grow our bond over the years. I
have a lot of love for this man!” Jason says. Like all good restaurant leaders, Jason is skilled in staff management, customer engagement, daily operations, and financials. “I’m a numbers guy and this is a great industry for me to use my skills,” he shares. And Jason’s success would make any mother proud. “My mom is the strongest human being I’ve ever met. She wasn’t dealt the easiest deck of cards in life but her strength and positive outlook on life is unbelievable,” he shares. “Without her love I wouldn’t be the man I am today. I never want to disappoint her so I strive to make her a proud mama each and every day!” When it comes to guiding the next generation, Jason advises “The front windshield is bigger and brighter than the rear view mirror. A Purpose Driven Life
Mark Matson is focused on the science of long-term wealth creation
F
ounder and CEO of Matson Money, Mark Matson, grew up in the world of finance. His dad was a financial planner and sold insurance, and Mark knew he wanted to be just like him when he grew up. “I would go to the office with him and soak up every piece of knowledge I possibly could. I watched him help hundreds of families, and I knew that I would go to college, and get a degree in finance and accounting so I could live out my dream,” he shares. Described as purpose-driven, a maverick, and a visionary, Mark has a deep commitment to always learning, inquiring, and developing himself. “I’ve reinvented my organization and our business offerings multiple times in the last 3 decades and expect to do so again,” he says. Having clarity about the numbers, the statistics and what they reveal about how free markets function is essential in Mark’s world. “You’ve also got to know how to empower and train yourself to powerfully pursue your dreams and live life on purpose,” he says.
Three things have helped Mark build a company from having no assets when it was founded 30 years ago to having over $8.8 billion in assets under management.* First, the team is consistent in their message that free markets work. They’ve been willing to sacrifice profits and perks to tell investors the truth no matter what. Second, the Matson Money team has been able to assemble an impressive paid academic advisory board, including a Nobel Prize-winner. And third, they have created a powerful coaching methodology, working with experts in human performance, coaching, neuroscience, and behavioral psychology. “We’re coaching people at an elite level,” Mark reveals. Mark cites many people who inspire him, including Ronald Reagan and, of course, his dad. “While most kids were reading comic books, I was reading “Think and Grow Rich” and “PsychoCybernetics,” and learning the foundations of wealth management,” he says. His commitment to his clients hasn’t
gone unnoticed. Mark won the 2021 ThinkAdvisor LUMINARIES award, recognized for his “Executive Leadership” for RIA. Mark, and his wife Melissa, are heavily involved in The Matson Family Foundation, whose mission is to love one another fiercely and change the world one kindness at a time. “We’ve discovered our true purpose for money is… love. Without love, nothing else matters,” he says. An avid cycler, Mark enjoys biking 5-6 days a week, working out, and traveling with his family. “My best thinking, where I create and clarify my vision for the future, happens on my bike,” he shares. His best advice for young men today? Mark says, “You must know what your purpose is. If you want to be a contribution, have an impact, and enjoy life, start with a purpose. Period.” Contact Matson Money at 513.204.8000 or visit www.matsonmoney.com, 18760 N. Pima Rd., Scottsdale, AZ 85255. *as of 5/20/2022
Comprehensive Cancer Care
Dr. Kevin Tulipana will never stop listening and learning
D
r. Kevin Tulipana, is the president and CEO of the Arizona Market at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA), Phoenix, which provides comprehensive cancer care from chemotherapy, radiation, bone marrow transplant, surgical oncology, supportive care, and expanded access to clinical trials as a subsidiary of City of Hope. Throughout his medical career, Dr. Tulipana has always been intrigued by the operations behind how health care is delivered, and the complexities within the business model. “I’ve spent many years working alongside great leaders, entrepreneurs and physicians. My father was an incredible influence on me. He was a successful, businessman in the transportation industry and instilled a work ethic that follows me today,” he says. What sets CTCA apart from other cancer treatment centers is that they’re the only oncology-specific hospital in the Valley. They plan to expand their hematologic malignancy, and bone marrow
transplant programs to serve as many patients as they can while converting to a not-for-profit entity. For Dr. Tulipana, pursuing a career in medicine means drawing inspiration from many sources. In addition to his father, his wife Kara and their family motivate him every day. “Kara has supported me through medical school, residency, my early career, additional education when I received a Masters in Bioethics, and the lengthy theology/philosophy program I underwent for the Church. She did all this while maintaining a spiritual, personal, and intellectual life,” he shares. Dr. Tulipana was named by AZ Business Magazine as a Leader to Watch in 2022 and says “It’s an honor to be in this position. In the 14 months as the leader of CTCA we have started the transformation to a new era of delivering oncology care. We have successfully launched a Bone Marrow Transplant program, expanded our access to the community and have grown our presence significantly.”
Dr. Tulipana’s commitment to people doesn’t end with his patients; he is on the board of the Greater Phoenix Chamber, the Southwest Valley Chamber of Commerce and is active in many cancer related organizations. “I am a perennial learner, who is constantly asking questions, not only of my team members, but of my own motives. Regardless of experience and education, we all have an opportunity to learn from one another and serve each other,” he reveals. And, when he’s not working, the devoted father of eight enjoys woodworking and music. When asked what the best advice Dr. Tulipana has received he says, “When I was young, my father told me that you could judge the character and work ethic of a man or woman by the number of shovels they own; they should have more shovels than TVs.” Contact Cancer Treatment Centers of America, by visiting www.cancercenter.com; 14200 W. Since Mike acts as an independent entrepreneur with no obligation to sell the products of any particular vendor, Mike is able to fill an important niche by providing customized opinions to clients that need objective insight. “We negotiate with our partners to treat all of our clients in aggregate - as if they were one large entity,” he says. “This allows each of our clients much lower rates throughout their entire benefit stack also yielding access to our PEO partners' highest touch service models which is not something generally available to the everyday client.” Every business has something that sets them apart. “Our team’s level of

Outside of the office, Mike is passionate about the outdoors. He spends time in the spring and fall exploring the woods of Arizona, New Mexico and Kansas. “I've also been known to play a little too much golf”. Navy Seal veteran Steve Parks brings visions to life through his mosaic art
BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTOS BY HEATHER MONTASIR
Steve Parks, owner of Angry Pirate Designs, utilizes stained glass, stone, copper, brass and just about anything he can get his hands on to create his one-of-a-kind mosaic masterpieces. The retired Navy Seal—who spent 25 years in the service— dedicates his time to creating patterns and images via a process of assemblage. “During my time in the service I started creating mosaics as a creative outlet and once I arrived in Scottsdale, I knew that was going to be my path,” he says. After working for three years out of his garage in Scottsdale, his creations began to gain traction. He outgrew his space, and he received multiple commissions throughout Arizona and beyond. Today, his studio and gallery are located in the historic Stable Galleria next to the Cattle Track Arts Compound in Scottsdale. Parks’ work, with its vibrant hues, unique gradations of color and abstract textures, feels alive. He often captures natural moments of animals, nature and people that make an impact. One piece, in particular, Purple Mountains Majesty, was made for the Help in Healing Home at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix. Parks ended up donating the art and is currently in between working on a series of Native American chiefs and a series of mosaic sculptures using mixed media. “The piece that speaks to me the most is titled For Us," he says. “I created this as a dedication piece for all of our service members that have made the ultimate sacrifice serving our country, and it hangs in my studio as a reminder.” And the Angry Pirate Designs moniker? It reflects the nickname given to Parks during his time in the Navy. Motivated by his love of art and the people he has the privilege of meeting while sharing his work is the driving force behind Angry Pirate Designs. “I have become great friends with all of the people that have commissioned me to create a mosaic for them,” Parks says. “My favorite part of my job is when customers send me pictures of my artwork hanging in their homes.” This year is proving to be a busy one for Parks. He is working with a few nonprofits to complete works of art that will be auctioned off to benefit veterans. An exhibition is also in the works. Besides pushing the boundaries of classical mosaics, Parks often finds life metaphors within his work. “We are all a work in progress made up of made up of many pieces like a mosaic,” he says. “You could be that one piece in someone's life to help them complete or add to their mosaic.”

YOUR PROSTATE CANCER SEARCH QUESTIONS ANSWERED
S
tudies show that, before asking their doctor, most Americans— up to 89 percent—go to Google, or Dr. Google, as it’s sometimes known. Google says it gets about one billion health-related searches a day. And many of those queries are about cancer. In fact, Cancer Research UK reported that “What is cancer?” was the most searched question on Google in 2017. Among the most asked-about cancers is prostate cancer, and with good reason. The disease is the most common cancer among American men and the second-most common cancer diagnosed in the United States. Users asked many similar questions related to prostate cancer, but they asked them in different ways. Most queries had to deal with causes and prevention, warning signs and screening tests. In this article, we’ll answer some of your most-asked prostate cancer questions on Google with the help of Farshid Sadeghi, MD, Urologist and Medical Director of Genitourinary Center at Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA), Phoenix. WHAT IS PROSTATE CANCER? The prostate gland, located between the bladder and the male urethra, produces fluid that, along with sperm cells and other fluid, makes up semen. The prostate is about the size of a walnut and is a channel through which both urine and semen pass.
As with many malignancies, prostate cancer develops when cells in the gland mutate and start growing uncontrollably. The mutated cells may eventually form a tumor or tumors. Caught early, prostate cancer is highly treatable. The five-year survival rate for patients whose cancer was localized is nearly 100 percent. But the rate falls dramatically when the cancer has spread beyond the prostate to distant organs. WHAT ARE THE WARNING SIGNS OF PROSTATE CANCER? While the disease eventually produces symptoms, there often are no early warning signs. Most men with prostate cancer do not experience symptoms during early stages of prostate cancer. Therefore waiting for symptoms to occur is not a good idea when screening for prostate cancer. Most prostate cancer symptoms surface only after the cancer has grown. Dr. Sadeghi urges men not to wait until they experience symptoms before they get their prostate checked. “A lot of men come here and wonder why they have prostate cancer because they have had no problems urinating,” Dr. Sadeghi says. “They don’t have blood in the urine or get up at night. They urinate fine. Urinary symptoms often have nothing to do with prostate cancer because, in the majority of cases, the cancer usually starts in the periphery
of the prostate, and by the time you have urinary problems, it’s because the cancer has grown from the periphery to the center.” HOW TO CHECK FOR PROSTATE CANCER? The answer to all these questions is the same: “Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test and digital rectal exam (DRE),” Dr. Sadeghi says. “You should get both.” A PSA test measures a specific protein produced in the prostate. Even healthy cells produce PSA, but elevated levels may be a sign of prostate cancer. Multiple factors, including specific conditions or medications, may elevate your PSA, so it’s also good to get a DRE. During that exam, a doctor inserts a lubed, gloved finger through the anus and feels the prostate through the walls of the rectum. The doctor is checking the gland’s size and for any lumps or bumps. Dr. Sadeghi recommends men get screened at age 40 to set a baseline for future screenings, especially if they’re in high-risk groups. If the initial screening uncovers no abnormalities, it’s possible to wait a few years before getting another. By age 50, men should be getting an annual physical and screenings. For more information visit cancercenter.com. Call 602-883-1463 today to schedule a screening.

Permanent Make-up
& BEYOND Microblading
BEYOND MICROBLADING As a permanent make up technician and trainer for nearly 30 years I’ve seen many trends come and go. These days one of the first things I hear from people inquiring about services is “I don’t want tattooed eyebrows. I want the soft powdery look that you did for my friend.” This is when I educate the public on the truth about permanent make up and the truth is it’s all tattoo. Years ago when permanent make up was just a fledgling industry in this country many of us worked in the offices of plastic surgeons. We called the procedure micro pigment implantation. Then different techniques were marketed using trade words like soft tap, and recently microblading has been all the rage. Known as the “queen of conservative” My specialty is custom blending colors for each person. Shape, color, technique and science are what create the artistry for beautifully natural eyebrows. Eyelash enhancements. Due to the lockdown most people have lost their eyelash extensions. This is the perfect time to touch up permanent eyeliner before reapplying lashes. I love to create a rich smokey looking lash line rather than a harsh eyeliner look. Safety first. Due to the intimate nature of these procedures safety has always been at the very top of the list. Hospital grade disinfectants are used on surfaces between clients and most importantly all instruments are new, sterile and disposable. Yea! With your safety in mind I will be wearing a mask through your procedure and if you like I will happily provide you with one as well. Because my studio is completely private you need not worry about ever encountering a crowded salon environment.

Kettey’s International Fashion Tiny Local Shop, Tremendous Global Impact
Kettey’s International Boutique
Usually upon entering a fashion boutique in Scottsdale, the shopkeeper will ask “Is there anything I can help you with?” At Kettey’s International Fashion Boutique I would have expected this and probably for her to follow up with “Have you seen the latest Mary Francis purse we just received in stock?” Kettey’s Boutique is not business as usual nor is the extraordinarily graceful humanitarian dynamo that owns it! After having several locations in both Phoenix and Scottsdale, the Mercado Del Lago center has become her latest location and the one that feel’s “most like home”. The 900 square foot store is packed with not just international fashion, but it is also the PERFECT place to find gift items for birthdays, hostess gifts, or just your own amusements. She has the most hilarious and smart assy line of dishtowels, beach bags
and fun little tchotchke signs for your she-shed or glamorous in-home closet. Tucked behind rolling racks of imported clothing are jewelry cases with over-thetop personal adornments for you to discover. It’s a bit of a scavenger hunt experience and treasure seeking adventure. Nothing is quite as it seems and everything must be discovered. But the tour guide/shopkeeper, Kettey, is your liaison into this cultural adventure. Having a pretty keen shopping eye, within seconds of entering the store I did zero in on a darling Mary Francis bag with the cutest beaded airplane, passport, camera and luggage lock … sooo cute. However, no mention was made of the jewel that would so fulfill my wanderlust esthetics. Instead, after several minutes of luxuriously taking in this special environment Kettey asked me “Have you ever heard of Shea Butter?”. My reply was “Well, I

don’t know … I think so.” Then she asked if I would like to try some pure Shea Butter directly flown in from Ghana. “Well, of course!” That is when she took a large piece of what looked like giant parchment paper off a HUGE wooden bowl completely overfilled with what I would later learn to be quite a magical substance. She excitedly showed me a big branch of the actual Shea Tree and then with a small wooden knife let me try a bit on the back of my hand. Truly pure Shea Butter, with no other additives, has natural humectant properties that soothes and softens dry skin, and other isolated chemical constituents are said to have anti-inflammatory properties, and it is even used as a sun-blocking lotion. This, to me, seems like a no brainer when attempting to protect from the effects of dry desert heat and chlorinated pool season. To further my educational adventure Kettey explains the boxes of African Black Soap that she imports under her own label. This product she sources from the Eastern region of Ghana. This non-drying soap made by
women using traditional recipes and exported through fair trade groups like Kettey’s International Boutique. The black soap has loads of antimicrobial properties so with our now, forever, and constant hand washing I will choose this natural import rather than harsh chemical hand sanitizers. Sold on both gifts from Ghana … love ‘em! As my goods were packaged, she explained that money from the sales of both Shea Butter and the African Black Soap go to provide safe housing for women and children in Ghana, the U.S. and other areas in need. While hanging out with Kettey, learning about her philanthropic passions between her other clients and shoppers, I noticed that almost every person entered or left declaring “Wow … I love the vibe in here … you can just feel it when you walk in.” Maybe that is because Kettey feels so deeply about her mission and commitment to help. In 2018 a chance meeting with David Magala would later lead to a philanthropic business partnership where the two would raise funds to export tractors to the farmers of Ghana, a desperately needed technology. Somehow this led to another chance discovery of a totally pure Shea Butter sourced from Northern Ghana and

painstakingly hand processed by the local Ghanaian women to produce one of the most glorious salves that nature has to offer. Kettey’s International Boutique supports Kettey’s Exchange for Children and Women’s Resources, a non-profit 501c3. The word passionate is thrown around a lot these days. But I assure you this is an authentically passionate person with purpose.
My afternoon at Kettey’s was an unexpected treat and now I have a delightfully unexpected new friend! Besides leaving with Shea Butter and Kettey’s African Black Soap for all my friends and family … I also left with the Mary Francis passport purse … who knows … Kettey and I may be headed to Ghana soon. https://ketteys.com https://ketteysnonprofit.org

2022 POLESTAR 2 All-new fully electric Polestar 2 with Volvo heritage BY JIM PRUETER
VITAL STATS: 2022 Polestar 2
Polestar is a new stand-alone car brand from the Chinese automaker Geely that’s owned by Volvo since 2015. Polestar is the new all-electric vehicle brand for Volvo, selling its cars through its Polestar dealer network and online. You can’t buy a Polestar at a Volvo dealership, but some Volvo dealers will service the brand. The Volvo brand offers multiple hybrids and its own all-electric vehicle – the XC40 recharge. Volvo dealers also sell Polestar versions of existing electric and hybrid vehicles. Polestar was designed in Sweden by Volvo and built in China. Confused yet? So are we. There are 34 Polestar dealers in the U.S. Like Tesla, all are located in shopping malls, including one in Scottsdale Fashion Square. Polestar 2 is a tall four-door hatchback-SUV powered by a 78-kWh battery. We tested the 408-horsepower dual-motor all-wheel-drive model that’s good for a 233- to 249-mile driving range. A less expensive, 231-horsepower single-motor front-wheel drive model is rated at 270 miles. There’s no key or start button; the car comes to life when you apply the brake pedal and shuts off when placed in Park.

Visually, Polestar 2 has a minimalist odd-looking and anonymous exterior styling. Inside, the minimalism continues in both styling and space. Entering the cabin requires ducking your head, and once seated headroom is at a premium, even for average-sized drivers. The footwell is tight, and a large, wide Y-shaped center console leaves little room for right leg movement. Visibility is challenging, especially rearward. Our Polestar was finished in optional leather seating, which looked nice, but the standard eco-friendly vegan seat fabric was drab with an economy look. A large iPad-esque touchscreen is mounted mid-dash and operates most of the vehicle’s functions through Google’s Android Automotive OS infotainment system. It was easy to use, especially the voice-activated commands. Polestar can move quickly on the road. Handling was exceptional, well-controlled and agile, but we found the ride might be too firm. The driving range is disappointing, especially when compared to its competitors. Exterior styling is bland. The interior is claustrophobic and rather unremarkable.

Men can find European and American styles along with made-to-measure services at Moda Man and fine leather goods including wallets, belts and boots at Scarpaletto. Choice Larimer Square restaurants include the Southern Gothic barbeque joint Russell’s Smoke House, which serves plenty of ‘cue alongside craft cocktails, and Ted’s Montana Grill, which is known for its burgers and bison chops. The 100-year-old Union Station is also noteworthy. This transportation hub houses a plethora of places to eat and shop. Find java at Pigtrain Coffee Co., breakfast fare at Snooze AM Eatery and a variety of cuisine from Spain and Portugal at Ulteria. See a Colorado Rockies baseball game at Coors Field. Of note is Coors Field’s 38,000-square-foot The Rooftop. Located in the upper right-field seating area, The Rooftop features two decks offering striking views of the game and the surrounding mountains, VIP cabanas and top bars. Near the stadium is Biker Jim’s Gourmet Dogs. Find a variety of hot dogs in a fun atmosphere. Find traditional options like the All Beef Wrapped in Bacon. If you’re feeling daring, try a dog made out of rattlesnake and rabbit, elk, wild boar and even ostrich. Even if there are no performances scheduled, a visit to Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater is a must. The amphitheater is a breathtaking sight that offers sweeping sky and mountain views, and there simply is no other place like it in the world. The theater was built into red rocks and offers high-quality acoustics. Hike the 1.5-miles Red Rocks Trading Post Trail by the amphitheater to take in some of those stupendous vistas. Searching for more recreation? The 71-mile High Line Canal features 27 trails that visitors can hike, bike or even ride horses while they soak up the Colorado scenery.
Where to Drink Beer The Mile High City brews more beer than any other city in the United States. Denver is also home to Coors Brewery, the largest single brewing facility operating in the world. Take a 30-minute tour to learn more about the history of the Coors Brewery and how the beer is made before sampling some. The Denver area is also

home to more than 148 craft breweries. A few options include The Denver Beer Co., which has three locations in the area. The brewery’s production facility is entirely solar-powered and 95% of the malt is sourced from Colorado. Find creative beer on the menu. Try the vibrant pink Princess Yum Yum raspberry kolsch that’s fermented with real raspberries and offers a tart and dry finish or the Graham Cracker porter featuring notes of vanilla, smoked cedar and mulling spices intended to be consumed with s’mores by a roaring campfire. Find IPAs, hard seltzers, nitro cold brews and even kombucha in an industrial space at Jagged Mountain Brewery. At Black Shirt Brewing Co., enjoy lager, IPA, amber ale and a pilsner alongside hearty pizzas made out of spent grain like the Hotel California, house red sauce, sliced mozzarella, grape tomato and fresh basil that’s topped with a balsamic glaze drizzle. Cerebral Brewing takes a scientific approach to beer. Discover a wide variety of beer styles including hoppy, larger, barrel aged, dark and sour beers. There’s bound to be an option that pleases your palate. One option includes the Friday Brunch, a mimosa sour brewed with Cara Cara orange and Vino Blanc grapes.
Where to Stay When you walk into the lobby of downtown Denver’s Brown Palace Hotel, enjoy the grand space. Take in the ornate marble detailing, towering ceilings and the opulent setting of this hotel that opened in 1892. All of the hotel’s 241 rooms offer in-room dining, artesian water from the hotel’s own wells and plush terry robes. The hotel has six suites, a few of which nod to the hotel’s historical roots like the Beatles Suite. The world-famous band stayed in this suite in 1964. Listen to a classic jukebox in the living, admire the framed records above the bed, take in city views and see an oversized marble vanity and jacuzzi. The hotel’s Churchill Bar is a perfect place to unwind. Enjoy spirits, beer and wine, and pick from over 60 cigars. This bar also serves lunch, dinner and decadent desserts. For a more contemporary lodging option, consider The Clayton. Located in Denver’s Cherry Creek neighborhood, the 63-room boutique hotel features contemporary décor with a masculine vibe in the form of dark blue accents and dark brown furniture. The most outstanding lodging option is the two-level, 1,440-square-foot Isabella Penthouse Suite. The first floor features two bedrooms and the upper floor features a dining table and wet bar. Expansive windows showcase stunning views of the Rocky Mountains and let plenty of natural light in. Property-wide amenities include an outdoor swimming pool and a restaurant. So Scottsdale! June ‘22

SURPRISE PARTY
The Americano’s riff on a Manhattan, the Glass Trip, is elevated by an unexpected ingredient
BY CHRISTINA BARRUETA / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS
Since its debut in 2020, The Americano continues to draw crowds who clamor for juicy steaks grilled over mesquite and pecan wood, heavenly pastas and sophisticated Italian dishes. Cocktails likewise echo the restaurant’s elegant refinement with innovative libations and unique house-made ingredients. A prime example is the Glass Trip ($18), made with one unexpected ingredient: a mushroom-infused mezcal. “I really believe in my team and letting their voices be heard,” says spirits specialist Christopher Cuestas. The cocktail program is a collaborative effort. It was colleague Ephie Skinner who proposed combining mezcal with mushrooms. Why? She felt the mushroom’s earthiness would complement the mezcal’s smokiness. For the base, NARAN Espadin, a local mezcal, is infused with dried porcini mushrooms. “It’s so savory that it has to be carefully balanced,” says Cuestas. After much experimentation, the team landed on the brilliant combination of mezcal, Rare Wine Co. Boston Bual Madeira, Martelletti Vermouth Di Torino, house sage-rosemary bitters and a splash of sherry vinegar. “That last ingredient balances the flavors in an amazing way,” says Cuestas. For presentation, a glass is rimmed with black garlic EVOO (“for more umami”) and filled with cherry smoke. The final touch is a garnish of fresh enoki mushrooms, which appear to emerge from the mist as the smoke dissipates. Although guests might hesitate with this drink, once they try it, they’re usually pleasantly surprised by how much they enjoy this creative libation. Formerly only on the seasonal winter menu, the Glass Trip was such a hit that it’s now a year-round signature. The Americano, 17797 N. CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Angelo Sosa of Tía Carmen
BY CHRISTINA BARRUETA / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS
In May, renowned restaurateur, author and Top Chef All-Star Angelo Sosa opened Tía Carmen at the JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa. The restaurant is named after Sosa’s beloved tía (aunt in Spanish) Carmen. He honors her memory with a contemporary Southwestern menu rooted in tradition.
What brought you from San Diego to Arizona? I had an amazing opportunity, and I knew something special was happening here. Arizona is magical. The quality of ingredients is impeccable, and Tía Carmen is a love story about the region. How has your Tía Carmen inspired you? In the last five years or so, I’ve really begun connecting to my roots. She was my Dominican aunt. When we went to Queens, the aromas would pull me into the kitchen. My earliest memory is as a 9 year old, propping myself up on a plastic bar stool to watch her. When people reacted to her food, it was with pure joy. Her cooking moved you. Food can look pretty, but it also must have an emotion and vibration behind it. Which is why sourcing is so important to me. How so? Tía Carmen is an experience, and sharing the community through food is a love story. Being a storyteller is important because it’s an expression of local partners like Ramona Farms, Hypha Foods, Steadfast Farms and the beautiful ingredients that farmer Nate Diemer grows for us here. What is one of your signature dishes? Our aged tepary bean black mole. I spent time in Oaxaca with chef Celia Florián, and we had the most powerful connection. She taught me her mole process, and it was so beautiful. I also wanted to pay homage to the Southwest, and when I met Ramona [Button], I knew that was the perfect conduit – I had to add her tepary beans. What is something readers would be surprised to know about you? I grew up in the small farming town of Durham, Connecticut. Tía Carmen, 5350 E. Marriott Dr., Phoenix; 480.293.3636; www.tiacarmendesertridge.com.

Truffle Cheeseburger “It’s what’s on the inside that counts.” This timeless expression couldn’t be more true, especially when it comes to America’s all-time favorite food, the hamburger. Whether it’s grass-fed, covered in cheddar cheese, paired with crispy bacon, dressed up with salsa or slathered in luxurious black truffle mayo, these local burgers prove that it truly is what’s on the inside (between the bread buns) that counts.

Premium patio furniture company Yardbird opens a showroom in Scottsdale
BY TERESA K. TRAVERSE
Growing up, Jay Dillon’s father, Bob Dillon, worked with factories to sell their products to major retailers like Home Depot and Target. From that experience, Jay realized the pitfalls of doing business that way. After Jay held a series of odd jobs, he and his father came up with the idea of an outdoor furniture company that sourced directly from factories and cut out the middleman. The pair opened Yardbird’s first physical location in Minneapolis in 2018. The brand has flourished since then and opened a Scottsdale showroom on May 13. “The more I learned about the industry, the more I the more we realized there was an opportunity. So my dad and I essentially started this business, and we realized we have the opportunity to make the highest quality of furniture,” says Dillon. Dillion moved to Asia—most outdoor furniture is made in Asia—for three-and-a-half years to visit factories and learn the ins and out of the industry. He took welding classes on the weekends and even speaks a fair amount of Chinese. “Without sounding too arrogant, I probably am the most knowledgeable American on the manufacturing of outdoor furniture,”

he says. “We think we make the highest quality outdoor furniture, and we bring it direct to the consumer, and we try and do it in eco-friendly, and a heavy customer service environment.” When it comes to materials—which are all sourced direct—Yardbird uses aluminum over steel because aluminum doesn’t rust. Yardbird also uses Sunbrella, a weather-resistant performance fabric favored by designers. Yardbird makes some of its products out of plastics that are taken from beach-side or coastal communities that would have otherwise ended up in the ocean. Half of Yardbird’s packing materials are from recycled sources. Yardbird hires mostly designers and trains all of its employees to help customers find furniture that will fit their homes. Yardbird sells 11 different sets of outdoor patio furniture. “By also having inventory of just 11 collections, we can get it to quickly focus on quality. We can focus on efficiency,” says Dillon. Customers can purchase individual chairs like the Langdon Outdoor Fixed Chair ($740), sofas like the Langdon Outdoor Sofa ($1,970) and entire sets like the Langdon Outdoor Sofa Set With Fixed Chairs ($3,600). Yardbird’s 4,200-square-foot Scottsdale showroom is Yardbird’s first location in the Southwest. Outside of Chicago, the Scottsdale area is Yardbird’s second best-selling e-commerce market. “We’re excited to be there,” says Dillon. “For us, it’s really important to sit and feel furniture to really be able to validate to the degree that you can. We also have really high-quality furniture that is comfortable.” Yardbird is open Monday, Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.
