Ownership of Real Property as Community Property with Right of Survivorship (“CPWROS”) and as Joint Tenants with Right of Survivorship (“JTWROS”)
Q:
My wife and I own our Scottsdale home as CPWROS. We own an 8-unit apartment complex in Old Town Scottsdale with our two daughters as JTWROS. If my wife passes away first, I think that I will be the sole owner of our Scottsdale home. Who will be the owners of the 8-unit apartment complex if my wife passes first?
A:
First, you are correct that you will be the sole owner of your Scottsdale home. Second, in regard to the 8-unit apartment complex, you and your two daughters will be owners as JTWROS. Your deceased wife’s estate would have no interest in the 8-unit apartment complex.
Note: A CPWROS interest in real property cannot be transferred without the consent of both spouses. A JTWROS interest in real property, however, can be transferred without any consent, e.g., one of your daughters could transfer her interest in the 8-unit apartment complex to her boyfriend without any notice to, or consent from, you, or your wife, or your other daughter. If your wife passes away, you and your other daughter will then be “Joint Tenants” with the boyfriend.

It’s that time of the year again, guys! Our annual Man Issue is here and, though not a man myself, it really is a fun project to put together.
Each June, we get to focus on men and, in honor of Father’s Day, also dads. It’s exciting to get creative each year to think about what exactly we could highlight that would appeal to men. This time around, for starters, there’s articles about some hearty sandwiches from local restaurants (page 102), places to get great selections of whiskey (page 66), must-haves to maintain the perfect beard (page 72), and cocktails featuring smoky mezcal (page 98).
For the art lover, there’s a highlight on Hamilton coming to ASU Gammage this month and next (page 55); for the sporty guy, flip to page 64 and 71, respectively, for a roundup of places to shop for and play pickleball and a golf bag that will make other players green with envy; for the gamer, page 114 features a new immersive, internationally inspired venue called Lane Park for fun and food; for the fashion fanatic, dapper dress clothes for summer (page 76); and for the health fanatic, a cold (and hot) plunge (page 85).
If looking for where to go or what to bring on a getaway for the summer: page 77 showcases trendsetting travel gear, page 78 displays outfits for those out of office days, page 88 highlights a lodge in the Ozarks, and page 92 is a roundup of some adventurous outings in Costa Rica.
We’re also showcasing some stellar men this month, starting with Phoenix Suns player Royce O’Neale (page 34). There’s also a feature on local businesses ran by fatherson duos (page 38) who are working together to create a legacy for their families.
We hope you enjoy reading this just as much as we enjoyed putting it together. Cheers to the guys!

Bobb Cooper of Valley Youth Theatre helps theater kids shine
For more than 25 years, Bobb Cooper, the Billie Jo & Judd Herberger executive producer for Valley Youth Theatre, has helped countless kids find their confidence on stage. As someone who began his acting career in a school production in fifth grade, Cooper knows exactly how they feel.
“My first time in front of an audience, I couldn’t get any words out of my mouth,” Cooper says. “I was terrified for about half a second. Then once the words came out, I found my place. I found my home.”
There was never a doubt in his mind that he was destined
Pulse UP CLOSE
to work in the theater – from his first “job” directing the neighborhood kids in reenactments of episodes of The Brady Bunch to landing the lead role in a production in his first year of high school in Detroit. Not long after, Cooper was participating in high school, college and professional theater at the same time.
“From the summer of 10th grade on, I was on my own and had to support myself,” he says. “I made myself get up and go to school every day because the one thing that kept me going was theater. And I wanted to graduate – I was the first person in my family to graduate high school.”
In 1981, Cooper made the move to New York City. “I thought I’d died and gone to heaven – an 18-year-old kid, with all these Broadway theaters on my street, thinking ‘Oh my God, I’ve made it.’ I moved into my apartment on a Tuesday, had an audition on Wednesday and was cast in an off-Broadway show on Friday.”
Funny Story
From there, Cooper acted in a number of productions, including a national tour, in addition to pursuing an unexpected offshoot of his career – working as a clown.
“I saw in the want ads an ad for a clown for a restaurant that paid $5 an hour – a buck-ninety over minimum wage. I thought I could retire on that kind of cash!”
In the interview, surrounded by people already sporting their clown regalia, Cooper said he had plenty of experience – magic, balloon-making, the whole nine yards. “I wasn’t lying, I was just acting,” says Cooper, who not only got the job, but was able to draw on his clown experience again after relocating to Los Angeles.
He and his wife Karol, known as Bobbo and Kookee, performed for hundreds of parties, including for celebrities like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jim Carrey. “Our mission was to inspire children with magical, musical stories where they could learn valuable lessons without knowing they were learning anything.”
When the couple moved to Phoenix, Cooper wanted to stay in touch with what he realized was his true calling – impacting children’s lives. He was introduced to Hope Ozer, founding board chair of Valley Youth Theatre (VYT), who met with him in VYT’s first location – the poorly-lit basement of the prerenovation Tower Plaza Mall. His first thought upon seeing one of their productions: “There’s nowhere but up from here.”
Up, Up and Away
Between Cooper and Ozer’s tireless dedication and fundraising, they were able to grow from a $100,000 budget in 1996 to a million dollars five years later. More money, Cooper says, meant they could reach even more children in need. It’s this idea that inspired the Sponsor a Seat program, where a $50 donation sponsors a child to attend a VYT performance, followed by lunch with the cast and crew. This year, the fundraiser takes place June 20 and 21 at Herberger Theatre Center.
Over the years, the initiative has grown from 170 kids to nearly 1,500, with many other children participating in VYT’s Literacy and the Arts program, field trips, virtual lessons and summer camps. But Cooper knows there are always more kids who would benefit from getting involved – whether on stage, in the orchestra or behind the scenes.
“My dream was to build an arts center for young people, so we could give creative children a place to balance out the academics like math and science that they’re being exposed to in school,” he says. “Theater is often being reduced, and I believe that I’m the well-rounded person I am today because when I was in school, they found it important to give us that balance.”
Cooper and his team have long since brought VYT out of the mall basement and into a dedicated theater – and the national spotlight. After a feature on CBS Sunday Morning and shoutouts in Oscars speeches from VYT alum Emma Stone, Cooper’s goal remains the same: to put on high-quality productions with professional sets, costumes and lighting design that show audience members, and the community as a whole, exactly what kids are capable of.
“In order to inspire young people, we have to be inspiring. They do it all, we just give them love, and a safe place where they can grow, find their voice, take risks and dare to be themselves,” he says. “Children are our future, and we have to do everything we can to lift them up and let them shine.”

HOSPITALITY HERO
Christophe Hermine ushers in a new era of service at Arizona Biltmore Golf Club
BY MANDYOver the past 30-plus years, hospitality veteran Christophe Hermine has made a name for himself in the industry.
Born and raised in France, Hermine graduated from the School of Tourism in Fontiville, France, before working at the Novotel hotel in Paris for two years. He then made his way to the United States by way of a position at Novotel’s Times Square location in New York, where he met his wife of 33 years, before moving to the Valley in 1990.
“I worked in several beautiful hotels and resorts in the Valley for the next 15 years where I gained experience working in different departments and honed my knowledge of excellent food and beverage service,” says Hermine, who went on to lead operations at numerous private clubs and resorts around the country.
This March, he accepted the role of director of clubhouse operations at Arizona Biltmore Golf Club’s newly unveiled 19,400-square-foot clubhouse. This comes full circle for Hermine, who served as an assistant food and beverage director and beverage manager at Arizona Biltmore Resort early in his career.
“Working now just a few hundred yards from the beautiful resort, I feel at home as I’ve always loved this community and part of Phoenix,” he says.
With the new clubhouse also came the grand opening of Adobe Bar & Grille as well as the club’s new grab-and-go market known as The Pantry, and venue’s event space called The Ballroom – all aspects that Hermine oversees.
“What sets the Adobe Bar & Grille apart is its seamless integration of historical elements such as the iconic 1928 ceiling,” he says. “However, the designers have skillfully juxtaposed these historical features with contemporary decor and architectural wonders, creating a space that feels both timeless and fresh.”
At the heart of Hermine’s job lies a commitment to offering an unforgettable dining experience. “From mouthwatering dishes to friendly and professional service, every aspect is tailored to delight the senses and create lasting memories.”
Innovation and adaptability lie at the core of his philosophy. By expanding services to include amenities like a golf simulator and a piano bar, he ensures the club remains relevant and appeals to a diverse clientele.

David Widerhorn blends entrepreneurship and spirituality
Serial entrepreneur David Widerhorn may be best known as the CEO of custom home builder Modern Masterpieces, but just as important to his journey is the company that started it all.
“My entrepreneurial drive is deeply rooted in a childhood intrigue with technology and a frustration with its limitations,” says Widerhorn, who founded his first company at 12 years old. “This early venture not only introduced me to the challenges of the business world, but also highlighted the profound impact innovation can have on everyday life.”
After entering Harvard at age 15 and graduating from Massachusetts Institute of Technology at 19, Widerhorn’s varied career took him from finance to tech to real estate. He eventually developed Neurensic, an artificial intelligence technology that helps create fair regulatory standards for financial market surveillance.
“My subsequent journey through significant health challenges and a transformative spiritual awakening redirected my focus toward integrating my tech expertise with my burgeoning passion for real estate and philanthropy.”
At Modern Masterpeices, Widerhorn’s team of architects, craftsmen, engineers, and designers craft innovative luxury homes that feel like sanctuaries, encouraging growth and emotional well-being. The venture (www.modernmasterpieces.com) is inspired in part by his mother, a world-class architect trained by Arthur Erickson.
Widerhorn’s passion for making a positive impact also manifests through his nonprofit, the Darash Ahava Foundation (www.da.foundation). The charity develops healing modalities that combine meditation with art, group and trauma therapies. The goal of the free programs is to increase access to tools for emotional and spiritual healing, with a current focus on orphanages in India.
Widerhorn’s inspiration comes from spiritual leaders like Sadhguru, Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz and the Lubavitcher Rebbe.
“Their teachings on compassion, community and resilience resonate deeply with me. They help frame my understanding of success, not just in financial terms, but in making a meaningful difference in the world and improving the lives of others, particularly those in vulnerable situations,” he says. “Ultimately, I define success by impact and am humbled every day by the enormity of the challenges we as a human race face on this planet.”

Donovan Hooks’ signature style elevates everyday attire
BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAYVegan Chef, entrepreneur and music artist Donovan Hooks embodies a style that seamlessly merges comfort, sophistication and a touch of athleticism.
Rocking a sharp yet effortless style, Hooks prioritizes coordination in his outfits. “I like the flow of the colors to be smooth, while the fit of what I am wearing brings out the sharpness of it all,” he says.
This attention to detail is evident in his signature look, which often features high-end or training joggers paired with white socks, sneakers, and athletic shirts, complemented by crystal jewelry, an Apple watch, and a subtle gold necklace.
Influenced by icons such as Pharrell, Curren$y, and Larry June, Hooks’ style strikes a balance between the urban flair of rap culture and the practicality of gym wear. Psycho Bunny’s seamless polos, Bape’s top-notch sneakers, and All In Motion’s affordable yet high-quality athletic wear rank among his favorite brands.
“My most prized possessions include custom red/gum Air Force Ones and Psycho Bunny gear,” Hooks says. “While I am not attached to my clothing, these are my must haves when I go all out on an outfit.”
What is a fun fact about your style? Part of my style is inspired by Bruce Lee. In a few of his movies, he would have Chinese martial arts pants with white socks and a certain shoe. I have a similar shoe and I wear joggers because they resemble the martial arts pants.
What is your must-have fashion item? A type of jewelry or accessory. The fit is not just the clothing, but all of what you are wearing. Jewelry acts like what a frame would be to a picture. It’s a must to frame the fit!
How has your style evolved over the years? In the past I used to be incredibly flashy. All of my clothes had so much design and color. The fit wasn’t even considered, so some of my clothes fit well, some didn’t. I’ve always had a thing for a nice pair of sneakers but I was not always considerate of comfort. I’ve refined my style over the years.
SCOTTSDALE WELCOMES DR. JOSEPH WILLIAMS, WORLD RENOWNED LAS VEGAS HAIR RESTORATION EXPERT!

He performs surgical hair restoration only.
Although other practices perform smaller and less expensive procedures, you will be the only patient Dr. Williams and his team will work on for the entire day. This allows maximum hair follicles to be placed with a result that takes 3-5 procedures and many years at other locations. How’s that for VIP service! Yes, it’s exclusive, private, and a very personal service, but that’s what Dr. Williams has built his reputation on. There’s nothing “assembly-line” about his style or his techniques. His patients receive their procedures in his office with little or no discomfort. Be prepared to enjoy a leisurely day of movies, music, and a catered lunch. Licensed in the contiguous states of AZ, CA, UT, and NV, he flies his patients, round trip the same day, via private jet to his institute in Las Vegas. A comfortable experience that will ultimately transform you to a more youthful and natural “You.” Once the “metamorphosis” begins, the results are so gradual that no one will notice you had a procedure done.

Style veteran Tom Simon’s signature look fuses modern elegance with a vintage flair
BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAYTom Simon, the general manager of Rye 51 and Q Clothier at Biltmore Fashion Park, epitomizes the essence of timeless style. With nearly five decades of experience in the men’s and women’s clothing industry, Simon’s fashion journey has been a testament to the enduring allure of classic elegance blended with a touch of vintage charm.
Simon’s classic Italian influence speaks volumes about his sartorial preferences – refined yet understated, with a penchant for the timeless allure of bygone eras. “A double-breasted soft blazer with an open-collar shirt and either jeans or a high-waisted wool trouser is my signature look,” he says.
When it comes to his color palette, Simon’s preferences are rust, ecru, and blue, while plaid and pinstripes both hold a special place in his heart for patterns. On the weekend, Wrangler shirts and sneakers make an appearance, embodying the rugged charm of Americana heritage
Among his prized possessions is a vintage Pendleton plaid overshirt, cherished not just for its exquisite craftsmanship but also for the nostalgic memories it evokes. “It reminds me of my father when I was younger,” he says.
Who influences your style? I am influenced by the best of the last four decades. I’ve been liking the character Edward’s style on The Gentlemen. My style icons are Giorgio Armani and Ralph Lauren because of their innovation combined with their interpretations of the classics.
What are your favorite brands? Boglioli has soft Italian styling and it fits many body types; Eton, in my opinion, makes the best shirts in the industry regarding style, durability and great quality; and LVC by Levi because it is such an American icon and I love the brand’s relaunches of vintage fits and styles.
What is your must-have fashion item? A year-round unconstructed blazer – it provides versatility and an easy way to add a bit more style to basic items.

Royce O’Neale on his road to the Phoenix Suns
One of the newest additions to the Phoenix Suns’ roster, Texas native Royce O’Neale has been playing basketball from the time that he could walk – quite literally.
“I grew up with basketball, even when I was a little 2-year-old playing on FisherPrice hoops,” O’Neale says. “I was always around it – my family members played it, and I played it with all of my friends growing up.”
Though he often watched games on TV, O’Neale never picked a favorite team. Instead, he looked up to individual NBA players and imagined one day filling their shoes. A versatile athlete who played multiple sports in school, O’Neale chose to focus his efforts on basketball, attending camps and working tirelessly to improve his game.
With time, his dream of playing professional basketball became more and more attainable. From his high school in Harker Heights, Texas, O’Neale was recruited to the University of Denver, where he played for the Pioneers before transferring to the Baylor University Bears. After graduation, O’Neale had a decision to make – he wasn’t drafted by the NBA, but the opportunity arose to play overseas, thousands of miles away from home. So he packed his bags and got on a plane to Germany.
“It was definitely different, especially being by myself, going all the way across the world for nine or 10 months. It was a great experience, culturally and coaching-wise, and helped me to be more independent, to focus more. I was able to just play basketball and not have to worry about anything else.”
O’Neale then played for a year in Spain before returning to the U.S. It was 2017, and his participation in the NBA Summer League with the Utah Jazz had caught their attention. One signature later, and he had officially achieved his childhood dream.
“I’ll never forget the moment I signed my first NBA contract. Then playing my first game rookie year, playing against guys I had played with in school, guys I looked up to. I was definitely nervous, but really excited to realize how far I’d come, actually stepping foot on an NBA court.”
But nerves are never a match for O’Neale – he had a job to do, and he was on a mission to show everyone what he
was capable of. In 2022, he was traded from the Utah Jazz to the Brooklyn Nets, where he continued to play with friends new and old – including Kevin Durant, who, after O’Neale was traded to the Suns this February, is now his teammate once again.
“My first couple of years in Utah, we played Phoenix a lot, and I’d heard a lot about it, the culture, the fans, the environment,” O’Neale says. “I had never spent time in Phoenix before coming here. I’d heard it was hot – but I’m from Texas. I like the heat.”
A RISING SUN
The news that O’Neale was joining the Suns was met with excitement from fans, players and coaches alike, including thenhead coach Frank Vogel, who said O’Neale is like one of the Suns’ missing pieces. The team has been acquiring new players with
the long term in mind, players who they hope can grow with the Suns over time.
In O’Neale’s opinion, a great team is defined not just by a competitive spirit, but the ability to mesh well on and off the court.
“I knew a bunch of the guys on the team in Utah and Brooklyn prior to being teammates with them here. It’s a great group of guys who all get along. I can be myself and fit in, which made settling in easy for me.”
Durant in particular has welcomed O'Neale not just as a friend, but as an allaround smart player. It’s high praise coming from an NBA great, but O’Neale has earned it. He’s a well-rounded power forward, a physical player with good defensive skills and a talent for three-pointers. Add that to his height – he is 6 feet, 6 inches tall – his ratio of assists to turnovers, his
dedication to studying footage from past games, and O’Neale proved to be a great fit for the Suns’ wish list, more than worthy of a midseason trade.
And, most apparent of all, he’s tough. As one story goes, players at a past free agent camp found a tooth on the ground during the morning session. No one had said anything when it was knocked out, and no one was claiming it, but they finally narrowed it down to O’Neale. They told him to go to the doctor and get it fixed, but he shrugged it off and went on to finish the night session.
This grit, as well as his technical skill, have earned him a slew of nicknames like “Real Deal O’Neale” and “Rolls Royce.” But in his eyes, there’s always room to improve. After the end of the 2023-24 season , O’Neale says there’s only one thing to do:
Come back stronger than ever.
“When it comes to next season, I’ll be working on my game, trying to be a good player no matter what. You’ve just got to work on getting better every day.”
ROOTING FOR ROYCE
Through it all, O’Neale’s loved ones have served as an essential support system, including all the friends he played basketball with during his early days in Texas. But his mom has been in his corner longer than anyone else.
“She has had my back in any way you can imagine, taking me to tournaments and games, driving me here and there, supporting me every moment, every second. She’s been part of my journey the whole way.”
Now, just as he used to look up to his favorite NBA players when he was a young,
O’Neale is setting an example for the next generation of pro basketball players. To all the young dreamers watching in the arena and at home, O’Neale would like to share some words of wisdom he’s picked up along the way.
“Never let anybody tell you that you can’t achieve anything you want. If you keep going and never take no for an answer, anything is possible,” he says. “Growing up, people told me I couldn’t make it, but every day I just said I was going to be the hardest working person and player I could be and do whatever I had to do to reach my dreams.”
And to his younger self, just beginning to understand the excitement and challenges of basketball while shooting hoops on his Fisher-Price toy, O’Neale has this to say – “Keep going. The future is bright.”
Five father-son teams working together to leave a legacy
These businesses leaders, who just so happen to be fathers and sons, are going the extra mile by working side by side to create a legacy that will last for generations.
Dan Chaon & Nate Chaon Sneakybird
Dan Chaon did not write the once ever-present Chili’s Baby Back Ribs Jingle featuring Boyz II Men.
“I did, however, sell thousands of those ribs during my time growing the brand to more than 150 locations across the Southwest in the 1990s and early 2000s,” Chaon says.
A true hospitality pioneer, in addition to serving as director of operations at Chili’s for a dozen years, Chaon also shepherded Native New Yorker from a local chain of popular eateries to Native Grill & Wings, which has now expanded nationwide.
“It helped being in the food business as a dad, because feeding three kids – two sons and a daughter – between school and their various activities could be tricky,” Chaon says.
By 2021, with all of his kids either graduated or in college, Chaon was ready for a new edible adventure.
“For years, my family was on a quest to eat clean whenever possible, so I decided to invest in technology to make good food for families like mine more easily accessible,” says Chaon, who, for a year, worked with a specially designed oven and innovative, aged Parmesanpanko breading that gives the crunch and flavor of fried chicken without the fat or oils.
After consuming thousands of “test products” Chaon and his family agreed he found a winning recipe, which he used to develop Sneakybird (www.sneakybird.com) with his son Nate by his side leading all digital strategy and brand development.
Opened in Scottsdale in 2022, Sneakybird offers a quick, craveable and exceptionally customizable approach to signature oven-grilled chicken wings, tenders, and sandwiches complemented by flatbreads, tater tots and fresh veggies.
The brand has exploded in popularity over the past year, so much so that Dan and Nate recently signed on their first franchisee – a father and his two adult sons – to expand the brand exponentially.
“We have six new locations planned across Arcadia, Dove Valley, Gilbert, Surprise, and Queen Creek in the next year alone,” Chaon says. “Our never-ever fried philosophy, which we even trademarked, is something we see going nationwide.”

“My father was a first-generation ItalianAmerican who worked several jobs to afford his five children every opportunity, something for which I will be eternally grateful,” Dr. Ronald says. “As a result, I had the opportunity to study the field of medicine, which not only changed my life, but will impact generations of our family for years to come.”
After earning his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Nebraska, Dr. Ronald continued his education in Indianapolis under Dr. Stephen Perkins, the fellowship director for the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, before relocating to Arizona in 1993.
In 1999, he founded The Caniglia Center (www.caniglia.com) in Scottsdale, the first stand-alone practice dedicated to facial surgery in Arizona. Lauded by patients and the medical community alike, physicians and surgeons worldwide have visited the center by the hundreds since its inception observe his cutting-edge techniques.
“And in the coming months, my son – Dr. Alex Caniglia – will join me in the practice,” Dr. Ronald says.
Following in his father’s footsteps in more ways than one, Dr. Alex completed schooling and his residency at the same medical school as Dr. Ronald. This summer, he will complete a fellowship with Dr. Perkins before returning to his hometown to partner with his father.
“This partnership is the culmination of a lifetime of mentorship, and I look forward to together not just carrying on his legacy, but building upon it,” Dr. Alex says.
Barry Van Patten & Barry Van Patten II
The Van Patten Luxury Group with Russ Lyon Sotheby’s Realty
Throughout his youth and young adulthood, Barry Van Patten – an alum of Arcadia High School, military school and Arizona State University – was fascinated by individuals who, by combining hard work and their own talents, attained extraordinary success in their life’s pursuits.
“There are common characteristics in great leaders – integrity, drive, honesty, and an authentic need to help others – each of which I hold in the highest regard and strive to live through my words and actions each day,” Barry says.
Those characteristics, coupled with his keen business sense and spirit of collaboration, have taken him far. For more than 30 years, Barry owned and operated a successful fitness business and became a real estate investor, quite literally helping build modern-day Arizona.
“In 2005, I was approached by Russ Lyon’s No. 1 real estate agent at the time to help grow market share,” Barry says. “I learned from the best on how to take care of clients, provide value, and serve as a trusted advisor.”
As Barry’s real estate career flourished, his son – Barry Van Patten II – attained success himself as both a professional soccer coach and founder of Pinnacle Soccer Academy.
“After my wife and I had our first child, I decided to change course and obtained my real estate license, but my father and I did not go into business together straight away,” Barry II says. “It was not until I worked nearly a decade in the business, making a name for myself similarly built on trust and integrity, that we felt the time was right to join together in 2020.
With Barry’s wife, Ginger, also on the team (www.vanpattenluxurygroup.com), the Van Pattens have collectively become a force in the market.
“We want to be a light in the world by helping people with what is, for most, the biggest investment of their lives,” Barry II says. “And we work to do it in a way that is enjoyable, as stress-free as possible, and always in their best interest.”
Thomas Porter & Teak Porter
Porter Barn Wood and The Coffee Builders
Arizona native Thomas Porter has always been an artisan, often working with his hands.
The New School for the Arts graduate worked as a musician, a graphic designer and even a massage therapist before founding Porter Barn Wood (www.porterbarnwood.com) with a partner in his backyard in 2010.
“What began as a reclaimed wood retail business soon evolved into a full-service milling and woodworking team with a niche for creating compelling furniture and other pieces for hospitality partners,” Porter says.
As a result, Porter’s son Teak grew up with what felt like a giant-sized Tinkertoy amusement park in his backyard. At 5, he was serving his father’s colleagues popsicles from the freezer, and by 11 when the business moved to a large showroom in central Phoenix, he and friends built – and sold – their first piece, a coffee table.
Now 17, Teak is working side by side with his father both at Porter Barn Wood and their newest project, The Coffee Builders.
“We do so much work for bars and restaurants that I wanted to create a space from scratch to really show our partners – current and future – the best of what we could do,” says Porter, who also wanted to go through the process to understand everything his clients go through before, during and after the design phase.
Opened in 2023, The Coffee Builders (www.thecoffeebuilders.com) is located inside Porter Barn Wood and features an eclectic menu of what Teak – a barista for the brand when not woodworking or in school – calls “latte art” as well as Danish-style sandwiches and other small bites. Awash in walnut wood, quartz and brass with high-end finishes and handmade artistic touches, The Coffee Builders seats approximately 20 and is a feast for all the senses that showcases the talent, creativity and attention to detail for which the Porter family has become known.
“All of our businesses are a true family affair,” says Porter, noting his own father – Tom Porter – worked in sales for Porter Barn Wood for years and now oversees the landscaping of the multi-use property.
Rudy Troisi & Brett Troisi Reliable Background Screening
What do universal IRAs, marketing, and the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess have in common? Together, they helped inspire a father-son duo into creating one of the most successful consumer reporting agencies in the nation.
“I was born and raised in New York, and after college got into banking, notably helping to launch the first universal IRA in 1981,” Rudy Troisi says. “I continued down the financial road, eventually finding my way into bank marketing roles.”
Given the field is so highly regulated, to work in marketing, Rudy became an expert in all things compliance. Sought after nationwide for his keen eye and strategic mindset, Rudy and his family would relocate several times as his career took flight, and by the early 1990s they were living in Arizona, with Rudy leading Bank of America as the director of marketing.
“Ready to put down permanent roots but knowing it wasn’t realistic in my chosen field, I utilized all of my years of compliance and regulation experience to launch Reliable Background Screening in 1994,” says Rudy, who serves as the company’s president and CEO.
The business allowed the family, including his son Brett Troisi, to make Scottsdale home.
“I very much admired my dad but had no plans to follow him into the family business,” Brett says. “While in high school, I worked at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, and it opened my eyes to sales.”
After graduating high school in 2008, Brett moved back to the East Coast for college, staying once earning his degree to begin his sales career.
“I came home to visit often. One especially gorgeous winter, I saw both Scottsdale and my father’s business with fresh eyes. I knew we had the chance to do something really special together,” Brett says.
He moved back in 2016 and immediately went to work with his father, now holding the title of vice president of national sales and marketing at Reliable Background Screening (www.reliablebackgroundscreening.com).
Together, the dynamic duo has quadrupled business since joining forces, recording record-breaking earnings annually for the past eight years as they run the entire company together, from business development and client services to background checks and staff recruitment and retention.
“I continue to marvel at Brett’s prowess for streamlining and scaling processes while modernizing systems to ensure our team’s success for decades to come,” Rudy says.

Dr. William J. Hall is Helping Patients Achieve Their Dream Bodies
While diet and exercise contribute significantly to a youthful and healthy appearance, age and other conditions can sometimes diminish our natural good looks. When that happens, a qualified professional like Dr. William J. Hall, MD, can provide the needed assistance.
Dr. Hall is a leading cosmetic surgeon in Scottsdale and the owner of Infini Phoenix Liposuction. His clinic offers a variety of advanced procedures that revolutionize traditional liposuction and liposculpture techniques. Innovations in anesthesia and surgical instruments have transformed liposuction into a remarkably improved procedure. By using local anesthesia to numb the treatment area, patients remain fully alert and comfortable during the process.
In the competitive market of cosmetic procedures, Dr. Hall’s track record speaks for itself. He proudly shares that Infini Cosmetic performs more liposuction and fat transfer procedures than any other practice in the region. “We specialize in modern
liposculpting techniques, fat transfers, Brazilian butt lifts, breast augmentation with fat, Botox, facial fillers, lip enhancement, and a comprehensive suite of aesthetic services, including facials, peels, lasers, and skincare products,” says Dr. Hall. “The inner transformation and confidence that people experience with a new figure never gets old.”
Infini Phoenix Liposuction stands out as one of the Southwest’s most unique and comprehensive liposuction practices due to its focus on minimally invasive cosmetic procedures. Among these is the advanced skin-tightening technique known as Renuvion J-Plasma. “This precision repair allows us to apply controlled heat to specific areas for targeted skin tightening,” Dr. Hall explains. J-Plasma utilizes “radio-frequency waveform technology” combined with helium gas to target and tighten sagging skin, restoring a youthful appearance with minimal invasiveness and short recovery times. Patients can expect a tighter, more sculpted look with this innovative treatment.
Recently, Dr. Hall introduced
Morpheus 8, an FDA-approved method for sculpting fat beneath the skin, erasing scars, and smoothing and tightening the skin for a more youthful appearance, further expanding the services at Infini Phoenix Liposuction. By prioritizing the patient experience and offering personalized consultations, Dr. Hall and his team take the time to understand each patient’s unique concerns, fostering a sense of trust and ensuring that individuals are well-informed before making any decisions when it comes to having their bodies sculpted or reproportioned.

Dr. Mohamed Abdulhamid is Pioneering Spine Health
In the heart of Scottsdale, lies a sanctuary of healing – Royal Spine Surgery, led by the visionary Dr. Mohamed Abdulhamid. With over a decade of practice as a board-certified neurosurgeon and fellowship training in spine surgery, Dr. Abdulhamid is not just revolutionizing spinal healthcare – he’s rewriting the rules of engagement.
Picture this: from the sands of Saudi Arabia to the cobblestone streets of the Czech Republic, Dr. Abdulhamid’s quest for knowledge knows no bounds. Armed with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Molecular Biology, he embarked on a journey that would shape the future of spinal healthcare.
But mere mastery was not enough for Dr. Abdulhamid. Hungry for expertise, he honed his skills at the University of Iowa for medical training, followed by a rigorous seven-year residency in neurosurgery. Yet, it was an additional fellowship in minimally invasive and complex spine surgery at the esteemed University
of Miami that propelled Dr. Abdulhamid into the realm of innovation.
A few years ago, Dr. Abdulhamid had a revelation – the key to unlocking the mysteries of spinal ailments lies not just in radiographic studies, but in the patient’s story. Yet, rising insurance pressures threatened to overshadow this fundamental truth, nurturing a reactive rather than a proactive approach to spinal health. It was a model that clashed with Dr. Abdulhamid’s personal philosophy and approach.
Enter the SpineVive/BodyVive program. At Royal Spine Surgery, Dr. Abdulhamid and his team believe that spine health is at the center of overall body health. Their comprehensive evaluation of the spine delves deep into history, physical examination, radiographic findings, personalized functional assessments, and composition analysis. It’s a holistic approach that investigates the root cause of the problem, rather than just addressing the symptoms.
But Dr. Abdulhamid’s journey of innovation doesn’t end there. As a child, he
found joy in the humble LEGO brick, crafting his own creations instead of following prescribed instructions. And when he encountered the synchronized HiFEM and radiofrequency energy technologies of BTL devices, he saw not just tools for aesthetics, but conduits for transformative potential.
Driven by a vision to transcend conventional boundaries, Dr. Abdulhamid embarked on a journey to harness the electrifying power of such technologies. After years of research and investigation, he developed a treatment program that is non-invasive with no downtime, addressing back pain in innovative ways.
At Royal Spine Surgery, innovation meets compassion, and cutting-edge technology is harnessed to better serve spinal health. With Dr. Abdulhamid at the helm, patients are not just treated –they’re empowered to reclaim their lives and rediscover joy.

Daniel Begay incorporates family and heritage into his pottery
BY JOSH MANDELLPottery has always been in artist Daniel Begay’s blood – so much so, that at times it felt inevitable he would end up pursuing a career in it. The art of pottery has been passed down for generations on his mother’s side and now it’s his turn to pass it on.
Begay takes a lot of pride and inspiration from his heritage as his mother is from the Santa Clara Pueblo and his father is Navajo. The mixture of his culture is on full display throughout all of his work. Constantly absorbing his family’s wisdom, he is able to incorporate the building and structure of Santa Clara while using the design and aesthetic of Navajo.
Begay has been making pottery for over two decades, and he is still continuing to learn about himself and his process. He has embraced a more individualistic approach to all of his pieces, designing them one by one rather than entire batches at a time. His latest work premiered in an exhibit called Clay Squared at King Galleries, which is located in Old Town Scottsdale and showcases Native American fine art and Pueblo pottery.
In this exhibit, Begay highlighted the work he’s been doing with square-shaped artwork and exploring where he can go with it. He ventured into wrapping designs all the way around the corners of his pieces instead of creating borders to make four separate sides of a square piece.
The pottery Begay makes is personal and holds an abundance of meaning. For an example, his piece titled Heading Home features an antelope, and while it is stunning to look at, it also reminds him of when he was a kid.
“My dad is from a community on the Navajo nation called Jeddito, which roughly translates to ‘Antelope Springs,’ so when I do pieces featuring an antelope, it’s me telling a story of childhood or making a reference to my dad’s heritage”.
Pursuing pottery full time wasn’t always the plan – Begay has degrees in both finance and marketing. Pottery was much more of an artistic expression than a career, but with the overwhelming support of his family, he was able to make his dream a reality.
“The reason I am where I am is because of my family,” he says. “They deserve so much credit, my wife has not only been my inspiration, but my biggest supporter”.
Through his art, Begay weaves narratives of family, tradition and personal history, inviting viewers to delve into the depths of his cultural identity and storytelling. While he sold out his exhibit at King Galleries, the gallery (which also has a location in Santa Fe, New Mexico) will be exclusively getting all of his new work in the future.

WHY ARE ARIZONANS AT GREATER RISK OF SKIN CANCER?
Melanoma rates in Arizona are significantly higher than the U.S. national average, according to recent data from the National Cancer Institute, while some reports indicate that skin cancer rates in the Grand Canyon State may be up to 40% higher than reported.
“The two biggest factors for onset of melanoma and other skin cancers are skin color — the lighter the skin color, the bigger the risk — and ultraviolet (UV) light exposure,” explains Aleksandar Sekulic, M.D., Ph.D., director of dermatology at City of Hope® Cancer Center Phoenix. “Arizona has a very high UV index, as well as very rapid population growth, and much of that population is Caucasian.”
Melanoma rates in Arizona have been increasing year over year since 2007. In 2020, melanoma was the state’s fourth-most commonly diagnosed cancer.
UV light is by far the biggest risk factor for developing melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, Dr. Sekulic says.
“UV exposure leads to damage to the DNA in the skin cells, which can cause melanoma,” he says, adding that UV light is not only found outdoors in the blazing sun. “Tanning beds have been shown scientifically to significantly increase risk for melanoma, so avoiding them is really critical.”
Research has also shown that melanoma is more often related to higher-intensity UV exposure earlier in life — “so a sunburn in childhood is much more associated with onset of melanoma than with onset of squamous cell carcinoma, another common skin cancer, for instance.”
Arizona’s climate, which is becoming increasingly hot, is also a factor. The UV index in Phoenix, for example, ranged from “high” to “extreme” for six months during 2023, according to the National Weather Service. Even though incidence rates for melanoma are increasing among Arizonans, treatment options for patients are improving and the death rate for the disease is declining. The key is catching skin cancer early, when treatments are relatively simpler and may be most effective.
Simple steps you can take to lower your risk for developing melanoma or other skin cancers include:
• Staying in the shade when you are outdoors
• Using sunscreen that has a sun protection factor of SPF15 or more when you’re in the sun,
• Wearing sunglasses that provide protection from UV light
• Wearing a hat that shades your face and neck
• Avoiding the outdoors during the middle of the day, if possible
• Avoiding sunbeds, tanning beds and indoor tanning
• Examining your own skin for any changes in moles or spots or the appearance of any new spots
• Common factors that may increase your risk for developing melanoma include:
• A prior melanoma diagnosis
• A family member who has been diagnosed with the disease and has had a lot of moles and lighter skin color
• Health conditions that require drugs that suppress the immune system
Lastly, “the more sun exposure somebody has had over their lifetime, the more important it is to screen them for melanoma more frequently,” explains Dr. Sekulic. “This particularly highlights the importance of sun protection for children.”

2024 MERCEDES GLS 580
The updated model showcases the pure joy and performance the brand is best known for
BY JIM PRUETERThe enormous, exquisite luxury Mercedes GLS 580 checks all the boxes of what drivers crave in an SUV. With three spacious rows of seats, the cabin is a tour de force of advanced technological wonderment, has an interior that looks stately with gorgeous materials and fine craftsman fit and finish, and features a drive quality where road noise and turbulence is difficult to recall and rather nothing more than a rumor.
Now in its third generation, GLS has received a style freshening that includes a striking four-louver grille in a silver shadow finish and a new lower fascia bumper with integrated air inlet grilles in high-gloss black. At the rear, the GLS impresses with new LED taillights. Inside, there’s fresh interior color schemes, such as high-gloss brown linden wood trim, two new leather upholstery options and an updated steering wheel. The GLS tested here was equipped with the optional six captain’s chairs that can comfortably seat six adults with minimal complaints.
Twin 12.3-inch digital displays occupy the majority of the instrument panel for a reconfigurable gauge display for the driver and
infotainment duties. Wi-Fi hotspots are standard, as are Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability. The 13-speaker Burmester Surround Sound stereo is standard, and the GLS tested here came with the Burmester High-End 3D Surround Sound System (an additional $4,550).
The test GLS, furnished by the manufacturer, was outfitted in the optional, stunning Alpine Grey exterior color (an additional $1,750) and black exclusive nappa leather with the natural grain grey oak wood trim interior.
Also new for the 2024 model is the more powerful 510-horsepower, twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission, standard all-wheel drive. Airmatic suspension that can raise the SUV an additional 1.2 inches for improved ground clearance is part of the optional Off-Road Mode package and includes an underside guard for body protection when negotiating off-road rocks, ruts and trails. Through Aug. 31, during the Best Summer Ever season, the full selection of the aforementioned amenities and attractions may be paired with guests’ choice of a lodge, a suite, a villa, log cabins, or a cottage as well as a calendar of seasonal events and other add-on experiences. One highlight: a chance to compete in the weekly Ozark Olympics in which guests can challenge each other in activities ranging from archery and carving to shooting and races. There are also curated date nights featuring wood burning, candy bar making, and charcuterie workshops; mixology classes; glow-in-the-dark volleyball tournaments; and a dinner cruise aboard a 62-foot luxury yacht.
Summer guests are also granted exclusive access – as well as shuttle service – to Dogwood Canyon Nature Park, which offers horseback riding, private creek and canyon tours, wildlife expeditions, and guided eco tours. Additionally, the park features Johnny Morris’ 350,000-square-foot Wonders of Wildlife National Museum & Aquarium, home to 35,000 animals and a national leader in conservation and education. Guests may also add a visit to the Bass Pro Shop flagship location in nearby Springfield.
If visiting with children, families can opt to visit Fun Mountain at Big Cedar Lodge, a 50,000-square-foot adventure center with an arcade, bumper cars, underwater-themed bowling, laser tag, a golf simulator, and family friendly dining.
There are several seasonal packages offered, including one that includes camping and glamping on property, and each of which may be customized based on room choice, amount of guests and desired activities.

FROM BATTLESHIPS TO BALANCE SHEETS
William J Lichtsinn — Naval Officer & CPA for Maricopa County Treasurer
I was born and raised here in Phoenix, Arizona, and have always loved calling the Valley my home. After graduating from the University of Arizona with a degree in Accounting, I was commissioned as a Naval Officer, and began my service overseeing counter-piracy operations during Pacific and Middle East deployments aboard USS Boxer. Following this, I was the Auxiliaries Officer and Interim Chief Engineer aboard USS Somerset, one of the three ships named in honor of the victims of the September 11 Attacks.
From the very first start of my professional career, I have been guided by the values instilled in me during my military service – duty, honor, and commitment.
After my military service, I commenced my career as an accountant, starting as a bookkeeper for a family friend’s business, and over the years have advanced my way through a variety of corporate finance roles. Lately I have been actively consulting with companies in a CFO / VP of Finance / Controller capacity, leading accounting and finance departments, helping with mergers and acquisitions, and managing special projects. Most importantly, I am a licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in the State of Arizona.
Another interesting fact – My grandfather-in-law Harry Rosenzweig served as a Phoenix City Councilman, the Chairman of the Arizona Republican Party from 1965 –1976, and campaign manager for Senator and Presidential Candidate Barry Goldwater.
I truly love where we live, and have always had a desire to serve our community. After suggestions and encouragement from some of my close friends, I realized that a great way to use both my military experience and professional qualifications was to serve my community again in a public office as Maricopa County Treasurer. Maricopa County is the 4th most populous county in the nation, with over 4.5 million residents – more residents than about half of the states! My experience uniquely qualifies me to serve the interests of the residents of our county, and
my platform emphasizes fiscal responsibility, transparency, and accountability; the public can have confidence in a County Treasurer who has relevant and appropriate licensure. When elected, I will be the first CPA to be County Treasurer.
I want my son, William III, to grow up in the same amazing community I did. We all need to do our part to ensure the next generation has more opportunity, and that
starts with financial investing and creating an economy in Maricopa County that serves its residents. Looking forward, let us not only focus on the present but also build for the years ahead. As a county, we need fresh faces and innovative ideas. My tenure at the helm of the Treasurer's Office will mark the beginning of a new era of leadership in Maricopa County – one that I am committed to ushering in. My vision extends beyond the administrative and transactional activities of the County Treasurer’s office; it encompasses the prosperity and well-being of every resident. Together, we can build a future where fiscal responsibility meets thoughtful advocacy. I humbly ask for your support, your vote, and your belief in a future that starts with a dedicated and forwardthinking County Treasurer.

CENTRAL AMERICAN ADVENTURE
Explore the outdoors like never before in Costa Rica
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZThough just roughly the size of West Virgina, Costa Rica offers big, bold adventures – from exploring a cloud forest to hiking an active volcano to sleeping in the sky – collectively found nowhere else on earth. Here are absolute “musts” when planning a trip to the stunning Central American escape.
Monteverde Cloud Forest
This high-altitude rainforest is continuously blanketed by a beautiful mist, perpetual clouds, and some of the lushest greenery on the planet. The unique ecosystem offers a diversity of flora, fauna and epic expeditions that feed the soul. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve offers a variety of tours with professional naturalists who can guide guests on tours to seek out 425 species of birds, 120 species of mammals, 60 species of amphibians, and 101 species of reptiles, as well as 700 types of trees. Monteverde is also home to Selvatura Adventure Park, which boasts treetop suspension bridges, canopy tours, and a sloth habitat.
Poás Volcano National Park
Enjoy coffee and a crater at this active volcano site, which last erupted in 2017. The volcano, which still emits gas and mist in an epic display of the force of nature, rises up more than 8,800 feet, and there are two massive craters on-site, both more than 300 feet deep. Most visitors pair a visit to the national park with the Hacienda Doka coffee tour, an immersive exploration of a plantation from seedbeds to roasting rooms in full view of the volcano. Bonus: Poás Volcano is less than 5 miles from La Paz Waterfall Gardens Nature Park, both a wildlife refuge and home to five waterfalls.
Río Perdido
Located on a rocky peninsula formed by two converging canyons, this boutique, sustainable sanctuary – primarily built from fallen trees in the area and surrounded by a 600-acre preserve – offers guests the chance to sleep in one of just 30 bungalows suspended in the sky and surrounded by forest in all directions. Each bungalow is minimal in its design and encased in glass wherever possible to make guests feel as if they are sleeping in the trees. The ample accommodations are only accessible by a forest path, each of which connects to the central hubs of the hotel itself. Guests have exclusive access to three mineral pools fed by natural thermal waters, both a jungle forest and one of the only intact dwarf forests left in the world, volcano mud bodypainting, cliffside yoga, canyoneering, a medicinal carbonated spring, white water tubing, cave exploration, wellness programming, award-winning gastronomy, and more.
Tortuguero National Park
This network of marshy islands is home to one of the largest nesting grounds of green sea turtles, leatherback turtles, and hawksbill turtles on the planet. The best time to observe the phenomenon is at night, and there are several nocturnal tours offered with local experts on the region and its population of turtles. Many tours are done in combination with a daytime canoe or kayaking expedition and walking tour complete with snacks and binoculars for better viewing of the area’s toucan, caiman, iguanas, and monkeys.
Gandoca Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge
This wildlife refuge is the only intact mangrove swamp in the Atlantic Ocean, but also boasts a beach, a 740-acre forest, a coral reef, and two swamps. While there are also turtle nesting tours here, many travelers visit to experience the area’s dolphins, dive through the living reef, and enjoy boat tours paired with ecowalks through the abundant forest.
Sierpe Sportfishing
Located in the largest system of wetlands in Costa Rica, Sierpe is alive with beaches, islands, waterfalls, mountains, and thousands of stone spheres from ancient civilizations. There’s also wildlife in every direction, from anteaters and sharks to pumas and spider monkeys. It also happens to be the premier fishing outpost in the region. Professional and amateur fisherman alike descend on Sierpe annually for the chance to experience deep-sea fishing, inshore fishing, river fishing and sportfishing for the chance to catch dozens of big-game fish, including marlins, sail fish, swordfish, and tuna.
Sarapiquí Pineapples and Peppers
This region of rich soil has become a mecca for rural farming. Today, it is home to pineapple plantations that allow visitors to discover and taste the difference that organic farming makes in food. Riding on a coach pulled by a tractor, guests are given a behindthe-scenes look at life on the farm with plenty of samples along the way. Peppers are also a popular crop in Sarapiquí, so many couple the pineapple tour with an excursion to a sustainable pepper field that takes guests on the journey of an organic pepper, from soil to seed and then from ripening to harvesting.
Hang Ten in Tamarindo
Named by Forbes as Costa Rica’s most popular beach, Tamarindo is a surfer’s paradise. There are swells for every level of experience as well as reef breaks, barreling beaches, and wave breaks near the shore. Newbies are smart to visit during the dry season (Dec. to April), when waves are at their mildest, while experienced surfers should visit during wet season (May to Nov.) when the waves can get wild. There is no shortage of surf lessons and surf camps in the area, many – like Iguana Surf – that also offer ATV beach tours, stand-up paddleboard rentals, and horseback riding tours. SMOKE SIGNALS
Cocktails with the smoldering sensation of mezcal
For years, mezcal, a smoky spirit made from one of the approximately 50 species of Mexican agave plants, lived in the shadow of tequila, which is similarly from Mexico but can only be made from blue agave. Over the past decade, however, mezcal has exploded in popularity, due in large part to its versatility in mixology.
Chartreuphy Course
A blend of botanicals and beautifully crafted spirits, Chartreuphy starts with Del Maguey Vida Mezcal, beloved for its notes of sweet grass, anise, mint, and charred pine wood; as well as Basil Hayden bourbon, known for its soft, sweet undertones. The duo is paired with bitter, candied orange-flavored Aperol and slightly medicinal Green Chartreuse. When stirred, smoky meets sweet, and sweet meets herbal on the palate. $17. www.courserestaurantaz.com.
Pleasure Island
Little Rituals
Equal parts earthy and exotic, Pleasure Island infuses bold, bright lime leaves into Mezcal Unión before it’s combined with Rucolino Amaro, a spirit with hints of arugula, as well as with Martini & Rossi Rubino, which is a vermouth based on 150-year-old recipes. The spirits are complemented and enhanced by both lime juice and pomegranate juice. $16. www. littleritualsbar.com.
Port Margarita
La Hacienda at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess Mezcal Naran, smooth and citrus-forward with hints of smoke, steals the show in this modern re-imaging of a margarita. It is complemented by ginger; agave syrup; lime; and ruby red port, adding a ripe berry and bitter chocolate flavor profile. The drink is smoked with cherry wood to add fruity and earthy flavors. $22. www.scottsdaleprincess.com.
Mezcal Negroni
Uchi
Surprisingly refreshing, this twist on a negroni features Mina Real Blanco Mezcal, offering a
symphony of vegetal notes of asparagus, floral sweetness, gentle smoke, and a peppery finish. It is paired with Carpano Bianco, an Italian white vermouth, for sweetness; grapefruit liqueur for acidity; and Suze, French bitters with hints of candied citrus. $17. uchi. uchirestaurants.com.
El Matador
Renata’s Hearth at Arizona Biltmore
Both Unión Uno Mezcal and Don Julio Reposado Tequila get to play together on the palate in this gorgeously garnished cocktail. The agave spirits are mixed with habanero, hibiscus, pomegranate, and lime juice. The drink is then topped with a seasonal flower and a smoke-filled cloche, which is lifted tableside for added aromatics. $25. www.renatashearth.com.
Valle Del Sol Vecina
Named to honor its Mexican roots as well as the Valley of the Sun, Valle Del Sol brings together warming Rayu Mezcal and its delicate notes of caramel and saffron with the brightness of Arizona citrus. The two core ingredients are combined with Aperol, mint, bitters, and Amaro Nonino to ramp up the refreshing notes and offer an herbal balance. $15. www. vecinaphx.com.
Century of Passion
Tía Carmen
Crafted with Pelotón de la Muerte Maguey Espadín Mezcal, this drink is a vibrant fusion of diverse flavors. The mezcal is mixed with passion fruit syrup, a touch of St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur, and a squeeze of lime juice to provide a citrusy zing. It is finished with zesty habanero bitters. $17. www. tiacarmendesertridge.com.

DRINK / CHEERS / CUISINE / FOOD FILES
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOSBack when Arizona was in its Wild West era, there were two games of chance – Faro and Brag – played in local saloons. Paying homage to Arizona’s past while dishing out hearty, locally sourced dishes representative of the state’s modern rising culinary landscape, Westin Kierland Resort & Spa recently opened Faro & Brag, its new signature dining experience. Among the most stunning of its debut dishes is the Tamarind Braised Pork Shank ($45). The star of the dish is a 16- to 18-ounce, French-cut Duroc pork shank that has been sous vide with ginger, Worcestershire sauce, cumin, salt, pepper, and curry paste. The marbled protein is then seared to order with a glaze made from jus and pomegranate and laid atop a bed of Parmesan Ramona Farms Pima corn grits, charred broccolini, roasted carrots, and pomegranate chermoula. GLORIOUS GLADIATOR
Newly opened Wander celebrates the Roman Empire with the robust Colosseum cocktail
BY ALISON BAILINChateau Luxe’s newly opened speakeasy, Wander, is wholly inspired by the most important historic and cultural places across the globe.
“The theme is reflected both in our aesthetic and menu. Notably, we have an array of Wonders of the World cocktails, which are our signature drink offerings,” says Austin Cahill, general manager of Wander.
Among the boldest is the Colosseum ($23), which comes complete with a replica of a Roman gladiator helmet. “The idea for the Colosseum originated in the mind of our lead mixologist, Justin Chard, during a moonlit walk near the ancient ruins,” Cahill says. “As he gazed upon the Colosseum, illuminated by the glow of the moon, he envisioned a drink that captured the essence of Rome’s strength, complexity, culture, and culinary prowess.”
The build starts with housemade tomato water, an homage to the staple in Roman cuisine. The water is combined with local honey that has been infused with black tea, chosen because honey was a sacred sweet during the Roman Empire.
“We then add white balsamic vinegar and black pepper-infused PAU Maui Vodka, chosen for its smooth crispness on the palate,” Cahill says.
The final ingredient is Moletto Gin, which is a premium botanical Italian tomato gin that brings together a variety of botanicals, notably juniper berries sourced from the Alps and Mediterranean maquis, with the earthy notes of tomato. “We shake the drink with ice and strain it into a crystal rocks glass, adding a spear of flame-roasted cherry tomatoes as garnish before serving it on a wooden board with the helmet for the ultimate tableside presentation,” Cahill says.
The cocktail is spirit forward with a balance of earthiness, sweetness, and layers of vegetal notes.

CHEF CONVERSATIONS
In the kitchen with Randy Bennett of McDowell Mountain Golf Club
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOSRandy Bennett is the executive chef of McDowell Mountain Golf Club, overseeing private dining, banquets, its Silver Spoon grab-and-go concept, and the new signature eatery Rossa Kitchen and Patio.
Tell us about Rossa Kitchen.
For years, our former primary restaurant –Mesquite – offered ultracasual Mexican staples. While great for our golfers, it did not have the panache to attract the local community. Enter Rossa, my pet project and love letter to Italian favorites, with a few modern American dishes sprinkled in as well.
What are some of your favorite dishes on the new menu?
I have developed my recipes for pizza over the past 15 years, so do not miss that section of the menu, especially Not Your Grandma’s Pie with spiced apricot marmalade, bacon, burrata, crushed pistachios, and crispy shallots. I am also partial to our pastas, which are now 100% handmade, and our gelatos. Also, watch out for new desserts this summer.
What inspired you to cook?
I wanted to escape 40,000 sheep! I kid, but I grew up on Colorado’s second-largest sheep farm and dreaded shearing, milking and especially birthing them. We partnered with the local butcher, who took me under his wing. That relationship led to my first kitchen position with a French chef who owned a restaurant near the shop, and I never looked back.
Tell us about your journey to McDowell Mountain Golf Club.
I graduated high school in 2007 and cooked in Denver until the winters got to me. I moved to the Valley in 2009 and really honed my career here, working in pizza and mom-and-pop shops until my first major break working at Top Golf.
How did Top Golf change your life?
I worked my way up through the years, eventually winning their corporate cooking competition hosted by Scott Conant. That led to me traveling nationwide as a corporate chef for the brand until the pandemic. In the South at the time, I pivoted by putting on foodie popups and consulting until the chance to join McDowell Mountain came in 2023.

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTOS BY STEPHANIE TASSONEImmersive entertainment options continue to expand across Scottsdale, from pickleball pavilions to bars with experiential games.
Though the aforementioned concepts have garnered success, Lane Park, an 8,000-square-foot recently opened adult playground, is a wholly new concept to the buzzy local scene.
The interior is inspired by Japandi design, which is a minimalist style that brings together Scandinavian and Japanese design elements and takes inspiration from nature. As a result, the space is predominantly decorated with light colors, and there are touches of midcentury modern aesthetics. Of particular note are the art pieces showcasing illustrated versions of the endangered shoebill stork in various human fashion pieces.
The international design is a perfect complement to the space, given each room is a love letter to global games. Within Lane Park’s walls, guests will find the first indoor ice curling bar in the United States, complete with four frozen lanes and a slew of
competition games to play.
Beyond that, the destination offers a variation of traditional bowling called Duckpin, where the balls are smaller and both the lanes and pins are shorter than in the standard game; a Peruvian coin tossing game of skill called Sapo; an Indian tabletop billiards-style game called Carrom; and a soccer game played under the tables, where players kick toward goals that have been custom-built into the seats. There are also 10 ax throwing bays, overhead televisions throughout, lively music, and a selection of common, popular tabletop games for guests to indulge in at their leisure.
The gaming spaces are complemented by a large bar, a dining area, and an outdoor patio, all of which where guests can order food and drinks from a menu created by Hell’s Kitchen alum chef Matt Hearn.
Given the communal vibe of Lane Park, the focus is on shareables. Early standout dishes include spicy crab croquettes, cacio e pepe-infused risotto balls, caprese skewers, grilled Brussels sprout kabobs, and crispy crostini topped with Oscar-style filet mignon. Diners can also choose from a assortment of pizzas and a variety of desserts. Those with a sweet tooth should not miss the massive dessert-inspired charcuterie tray, the apple pie monkey bread, and the funnel cake fries.
The drink menu focuses on infusing fresh-pressed juices into its signature offerings. Domestic and imported wines by the bottle and glass, as well as a selection of beers, are also available.
Lane Park takes reservations and also welcomes walk-in guests. The space is available for larger celebrations and team-building programs. It is open Monday through Thursday from 4 to 10 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
