August has an association with getting “back to reality,” as summer vacation is over and school is back in session. Though thrown into regularly scheduled programming as we head into a busy fall, it sure still feels like summer outside as the temperatures are hotter than ever in Scottsdale. With that said, there’s no rule that says we can’t have some fun during the school year.

The newly opened Puttshack (page 98) is just one place to chill out before outdoor adventures start again. Head to the Scottsdale Quarter to check out the high-tech mini golf destination, which combines nostalgic fun with global eats and a high-energy, club-like atmosphere. Or, head up north to explore one of the places we’re suggesting for a fun Flagstaff photo-op (page 58). If looking to go a bit farther outside of the city, consider an artful trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico, (page 80), or even farther to an oceanfront resort-meets-holistic retreat in the Madlives’ Coco Bodu Hithi.

Those hoping to stay closer to home can cool off with chilled, raw eats (think tartare, crudos and ceviche) from local restaurants (page 86), curl up in the AC with a new release by a Valley author (page 60), meet up with fellow “girl bosses” at the upcoming Powerhouse Women event (page 51), or try the newly opened Mochilero Kitchen (page 83).

Our cover star this month, Anisha Ramakrishna, is currently on her stand-up comedy tour, which just stopped in Phoenix last month. We caught up with Ramakrishna (page 32) on finding the man of her dreams and newlywed life, all things Bravo’s Family Karma, her life as a stand-up comedian and Scottsdale resident, and how she always stays true to who she is.

Other exciting profiles include the founder of a local nonprofit helping pets and children stay safe (page 21), the lowdown on the new CEO and executive director of Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West (page 26), and a look at Ballet Arizona’s Contemporary Council (page 24) through the eyes of its chairwoman.

We’ll see you in fall when the temperature is (hopefully) lower, and the calendar is filled with events galore! Until then, stay cool and enjoy the remaning dog days of summer.

All my best,

THE PET PROTECTOR

Julie Kessler, founder of Oakley’s Oath, is turning her pain into purpose

When the Kessler family lost their beloved dog, Oakley, to a preventable accident, Julie Kessler resolved to do whatever she could to keep others from experiencing the same pain.

“I fell into Oakley’s Oath by chance, not by choice,” says Kessler, who was having work done on her roof in 2021 when

a contractor placed a clear plastic tarp over the pool. The family dog, Oakley, named after Oakley sunglasses (which was named after the brand owner’s dog), fell through the tarp and drowned. “As soon as it happened, I knew I had to do something. It can’t happen to anyone else,” Kessler says.

So Scottsdale! August ‘23 21

Kessler’s nonprofit, Oakley’s Oath, aims to increase awareness about pet and child safety by promoting communication between homeowners and contractors. Any diversion from a home’s normal routine – from construction work to family get-togethers to open houses – can mean unanticipated dangers for a family’s most vulnerable members.

The nonprofit’s safety tips (www.oakleysoath.com) include keeping doors and gates closed when not in use; knowing what chemicals are being used where and when; and communicating with workers about when pets – who should be kept in a secure room when possible, in addition to being collared and microchipped – will be outside.

Through it all, the supportive messages Kessler receives from pet owners and parents have been a source of constant motivation. “Many people reach out and say, ‘I never would’ve thought of this,’ and to make a long story short, I never would have either,” she says. “One woman even reached out on Nextdoor and said that when they had a contractor in their house, she was extra vigilant because of our safety tips, and she was able to save her drowning dog, Kona. They said, ‘We are so sorry for what happened to Oakley, but Kona thanks Oakley for saving him.’ It gives me chills. That’s the whole goal of Oakley’s Oath, saving lives.”

Family Values

An Arizona native, Kessler earned a degree in communications and marketing from the University of Arizona before working in the congressional office in Washington, D.C., and earning her master’s in public communication from American University.

Upon returning to the Valley, she worked at her husband’s optometry practice while raising their two girls. When Kessler was inspired to enter the nonprofit world, she felt a little bit of doubt and a whole lot of determination.

“There are so many great organizations out there, and sometimes I’ve thought that other people have better ideas about things than I do, but this one came on really strong. It’s given me more confidence.”

Starting Oakley’s Oath from the ground up taught Kessler some valuable life lessons. Chief among them – that she can do more than she thinks she can, that she has something important to share with the world, and that she’s capable of making a difference.

It’s these principles she wants to embody for her daughters, now 24 and 22 years old, who serve as essential members of Kessler’s cheerleading squad. “I worked in my husband’s office and was a stay-at-home mom when they were growing up, and I think I gave them impression that I’d drop everything for them, that their stuff was more important than mine. I’ve changed a little – I want to model that each of us is important and self-sufficient. I have a life, too, I have plans, and I have a purpose.”

Other members of Kessler’s family who play a vital role at Oakley’s Oath are her husband and her father. “My husband, Maury, is on our board, and Oakley was his baby so it has a special place in his heart. He’s my biggest supporter alongside my

dad, who’s 85,” she says. “My dad is my idea man. We’re a lot alike, always finishing each other’s sentences. He’s not a pet owner but he still believes in our mission and wants to help me spread the word.”

A Better World

Moving forward, Kessler has ambitious plans to spread her messages of vigilance and kindness with the world. In addition to publishing an autobiography and hosting a fundraising event for Oakley’s Oath on Oct. 19, Kessler is working on a continuing education program for realtors, who often have to work around pets during open houses.

She also hopes that one day, contractors can partner with Oakley’s Oath as a sign of their commitment to communication.

“My intention for contractors would be for them to change their mottos from ‘We do a great job on your house’ to ‘We put safety first and we do a great job.’ I had a roof put on when we lost Oakley, and I don’t have any leaks, but I’d rather have a leak in my roof and still have my dog.”

One pinch-herself moment came when the city of Scottsdale proclaimed April 14 Oakley’s Oath Day, boosting awareness of the importance of pet and child safety in the community.

“It really melts my heart and gives me so much pride that they believed in us. This is our first proclamation, in the place where the accident happened, and we hope to have many more in cities in Arizona and beyond. Our lives are precious and finite, and I’d just like to put a little more kindness into the world and make a difference.”

Anya Borshch is bringing ballet to the next generation

Anya Borshch, chairwoman for Ballet Arizona’s Contemporary Council, traces her love of ballet back to her childhood in Ukraine, where attending performances at the baroque-style opera house in her city was a regular occurrence.

“My parents took me to see a ballet performance of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs when I was 6 years old. It was my first memory of ballet,” says Borshch, who started taking ballet classes shortly after. “It is truly a beautiful artform to watch and perform, allowing each audience member to escape to their own worlds and experience a different set of feelings or emotions. It makes me feel calm, as if I am out in nature.”

Borshch earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Arizona State University and worked as a retail manager for more than a decade before becoming a stay-at-home mom. After she left the workforce, a friend connected her with Ballet Arizona’s Contemporary Council – a group of young professionals working to instill a passion for the artform in the next generation – and it proved a perfect fit.

A natural born leader, Borshch moved up the ranks from development chair to chairwoman by fundraising, serving on gala committees, and organizing networking events to recruit new members.

“I first joined during the pandemic and the council was working to develop engaging virtual fundraisers like Q&A sessions, virtual cocktail making, trivia and more,” she says. “Even through the challenges, we still met our fundraising goal that year. It was a standout moment because I was able to help Ballet Arizona patrons connect with the arts community during a difficult time.”

With the Fashion & Fizz fundraiser on the calendar for this October, Borshch is more excited than ever for the future of Ballet Arizona, crediting her family for her unwavering dedication.

“My family, including my parents, grandparents, and my kids, all inspire me,” she says. “Coming from a family of immigrants, my parents worked hard to provide for my brother and I when we were younger. I want my kids to see that success can come in multiple forms and that it is important to give back.”

HEART OF THE WEST

Todd Bankofier takes the reins as CEO and Executive Director of Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West

Todd Bankofier knows better than anyone that the spirit of the West is strong in Scottsdale. This May, it was announced that he would serve as the new chief executive officer and executive director of Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West.

“I’m more than humbled to be in this new role because I know of all the trials and ordeals it took for the founding members to make Western Spirit a reality in partnership with the City of Scottsdale,” says Bankofier, who attended Arizona State University for business management and worked on Capitol Hill before bringing his leadership skills back to Arizona. While living in D.C., he was a frequent attendee of the Smithsonian Museums, continuing a trend from his childhood in northern Nevada.

“I remember specifically getting on a school bus from our rural elementary school and traveling into town to a museum and being in awe of all the art and interactive activities for us to learn more about history,” he says. “These institutions are so amazingly educational. They all accomplish an important mission, just like our own at Western Spirit – they illuminate the past to better shape the future.”

Bankofier’s own past, and his leadership style, were greatly influenced by his grandfather, a second-generation rancher and mayor of Reno who taught him the importance of faith, honesty, equality, and service after Bankofier’s father passed away when he was young.

It’s these very principles, plus his aptitude for rapidly course correcting on the path to modernization, that have landed him on numerous lists of top business leaders in the Valley over the years. And today, whether he’s helping install rotating exhibits or overseeing the museum’s beloved permanent exhibitions – from six centuries of Hopi pottery to Abe Hays’ collection of more than 1,400 Old West artifacts – Bankofier’s goal stays the same.

“I hope guests find delight in being inspired and informed by the beautiful American West and all it has to offer in culture and heritage, but also in so much honesty and instruction for our future.”

KEEPING IT SIMPLE

When it comes to personal style, Jim Hutelmyer believes in simplicity and minimalist elegance.

Hutelmyer’s passion for his career spanning over two decades – he is a mortgage loan officer and branch manager of The Hutelmyer Group – is only matched by his enthusiasm for fashion. He also gains inspiration in his home life, turning to his fashion-savvy wife and two daughters to help him refine his sense of style.

“My personal style is clean, simple, and understated,” Hutelmyer says. “A pair of shorts paired with a well-fitting T-shirt exudes my laid-back yet put-together vibe.”

Finding clothes that fit his tall and lean frame has been a challenge for Hutelmyer, but he has discovered several brands that cater to his needs. For T-shirts, he favors the drop-cut designs by B.Y.L.T.; for casual wear, he gravitates toward Travis Mathew; and for shoes, he opts for New Balance.

“There seems to be a classic dad shoe movement making New Balance cool and I am here for it and trying to do my part.”

When he’s on the clock, Hutelmyer leans toward sport coats during the winter months for a professional touch. In the summer, he embraces golf shirts to beat the heat.

What are your favorite trends? The jogger trend is great. They are basically sweat pants that are all the sudden considered high style. I love no-show socks with dress shoes and suits, and the golf clothing being worn everywhere trend. It also looks to me like cargo pants and shorts are trying to make a comeback and I am ready for that one!

What is your must-have fashion item? I like to have at least three solid color suits ready to roll in my closet. The solid colors make it hard to mess up and I mix the jackets in with a lot of the other outfits I wear.

What is your favorite store? State and Liberty in Scottsdale Quarter. The brand makes the most lightweight dress shirts I have ever come across and they look great and don’t wrinkle. They are perfect for the Arizona heat.

IN LIVING COLOR

Monica Samuels keeps things fun with chic styles in bright hues

Monica Samuels, the founder of Quasar Quantum Healing, is not only a trailblazer in the field of holistic wellness, but also a fashionista with a unique sense of style.

Samuels radiates a vibrant energy through her wardrobe choices and opts for maxi dresses and bold patterns. Her closet full of flowing dresses not only showcases her love for color and individuality, but also exudes a sense of effortless elegance.

Over the years, Samuels’ style has evolved to accommodate her busy lifestyle and professional commitments. While she previously gravitated toward dresses exclusively, she now incorporates different silhouettes such as pants and jumpsuits into her day-to-day wear.

“Ralph Lauren is my favorite everyday clothing brand because the pieces are timeless; you can wear the brand’s clothes at any stage of life, and you can dress them up or down,” she says.

While Samuels once followed fashion trends closely during her previous career in the fashion industry, she now prioritizes comfort and has let go of “trend-chasing.” Social media no longer dictates her style choices. Instead, she focuses on dressing in a way that suits her body and lifestyle.

What are your favorite colors to wear?

My favorite colors are anything that is bright and vibrant, usually oranges and pinks. I love cotton materials and loose-fitting, flowy clothes.

What is your most prized possession in your closet? My most prized possession is my Qiu Jin pendulum necklace that I obtained working with Deepak Chopra. I always wear her because she brings healing energy to myself and my clients.

What is your must-have item fashion item? My must-have item is my large Mary Poppins-sized tote bag that I carry with me everywhere. I have many bits and bobs that I use on a daily basis that are easily accessible in my bag. Even though it fits all my essentials, it is still reasonably sized and goes with everything.

Comedian and star of Family Karma

Anisha Ramakrishna on newlywed life in Scottsdale and being unapologetically herself

32 So Scottsdale! August ‘23

Say hello to one of the Valley’s newest transplants – entrepreneur-turned-comedian Anisha Ramakrishna. A familiar face to fans of Bravo’s Family Karma, the long-time Miami resident is used to the heat, but she couldn’t be more thrilled about the Valley’s beautiful weather come fall and winter.

Last fall in particular holds special a place in Ramakrishna’s heart – in October of 2022, she and her fiance, Dr. Anand Tarpara, finally tied the knot.

The intimate backyard ceremony was held on the only weekend that both halves of the busy couple were free. With so little planning time, it was a small but lavish affair, topped off with a reception at the Ritz Carlton Coconut Grove this June for all their friends and family.

“The reception wasn’t traditional, no speeches or wedding cake. We just wanted everyone to have a blast, to come and get lit!” Ramakrishna says. “Being able to celebrate with everyone was so awesome – I came back and it felt official.”

Despite the happy ending, Ramakrishna’s journey to matrimony had its share of ups and downs. “For years, everyone was telling me to just take the plunge and get married, but you have to follow your gut in life, and I was never ready,” she says. “Then during the pandemic, I turned 37 and that kickstarted the thought that maybe I want a life companion.”

Tired of the Miami dating scene, Ramakrishna moved to New York City with a mental list of traits for an ideal partner. “I’m a geriatric millennial. I’d never been on dating apps, but I kind of panicked that I would never meet somebody, so I downloaded Hinge and Bumble and swiped on over 1,000 people. I wanted a unicorn and I found him.”

When she met her now-husband, all of the important boxes were checked – integrity, ambition, physical attraction, Indian heritage – and the rest were thrown out the window.

“I had wanted someone at least 6 feet tall because I’m 5 feet, 8 inches tall. My husband is 5 feet, 9 inches tall. I wanted someone who was older than me and already established in their career. He was just starting out as a doctor and two years younger than me. But I knew he was the one right away, even if he didn’t!”

For Ramakrishna, the key, especially as someone getting married later in life, was finding an independent partner, one with his own career, his own friends, and his own hobbies. “Someone to share my life with instead of becoming my life,” she says.

Spilling the Chai

Overall, the pandemic led to a lot of self-reflection, which proved essential for Ramakrishna in the long run. “I was a late bloomer – I didn’t have my first boyfriend until 21. I really wasn’t comfortable with what I looked like and who I was, whether I’m funny or not, whether I’m a good fashion designer or not. None of that happened for me until my mid-30s, when I started really taking the time to focus on and take care of myself. By the time I was ready to date, I had been single for five years.”

But if she could go back and change

So Scottsdale! August ‘23 33

one thing, she would. Faced with the looming pressure of “the dream” – the white picket fence, a dog, x-amount of kids before a certain age – Ramakrishna feels she wasted too much time trying to conform to the idea of how women are “supposed to” behave.

“For a lot of years, people have told me to tone it down, to be more feminine, to not be so loud and outspoken because guys don’t like that. For so long I was doing all those things and it really wasn’t me. But I found someone who thinks that what I do is cool, someone who says, ‘Absolutely, you should do whatever you want and live the life you’ve dreamed of.’”

For anyone who’s seen Ramakrishna’s candor and natural sense of humor in action, it’s no surprise that her most recent dream involves comedy. She’s had her eye on this prize for a while – previously, the tour for her podcast, Currently Cringing, was cancelled, but in November of 2022 she was invited to perform stand-up at Carolines on Broadway. “It was amazing, a one-and-done. I was just there to have the best time ever.”

But then Carolines referred her to Miami Improv – on Ramakrishna’s home turf – and she resolved to put on a killer show for her friends and family. She practiced like a pro, but when the time came, she bombed.

“I choked, I got nervous, I forgot things,” she says. “Comedy is the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I’m a conversationalist, so I can easily talk to someone, but when you’re on stage, you’re storytelling by yourself in front of 200 people. You’re feeding off the audience, and you know when the jokes are good or bad.”

In the months since, Ramakrishna has performed all over the country, with each show presenting a new challenge. Still, she wouldn’t have it any other way. “Stand-up is something I’ve been wanting to do for years, but we all want a lot of things. You can only work toward something and hope for the best. I’m turning 40 next year, so this is it. It’s happening.”

Ramakrishna’s favorite subjects for her sets include waiting to have kids and freezing her eggs, the trials and tribulations of being a “girl boss,” and all things marriage, from finding her partner later in life to being the first person in her family to not have an arranged marriage. “It’s like therapy for me. Then when I talk to the audience after a show, a lot of them tell me, ‘I thought I was the only one, you’re so relatable.’ It’s like therapy for them, too.”

Much of Ramakrishna’s story undoubtedly rings a bell to viewers of Family Karma, which follows the lives of seven Indian-American friends navigating through life against the backdrop of their families’ expectations and traditions. What sets the

show apart, Ramakrishna says, are the organic relationships between the castmates and their parents and grandparents, who at first were far from thrilled about the idea of putting their lives on TV.

“I was 33, had just left my job in New York to start a fashion line, and was single and living at home,” says Ramakrishna, who had previously earned her MBA in finance and worked for the fashion brand Elie Tahari for 7 years. “My parents were concerned. They said, ‘Are you sure you want to do this? Maybe instead of being on a TV show you should focus on getting married.’ But after seeing how the show has impacted so many people all over the world, I can say that my parents are really proud of me.”

From sharing her rollercoaster ride of a dating life to the challenges and rewards of running her size-inclusive, eco-conscious clothing line Currently (www.shopcurrently. com), Ramakrishna – who lives her life by the Hindi maxim “no sharam,” or “no shame” in English – wants her time on people’s screens to help them realize that they shouldn’t be anyone other than themselves.

“I hope viewers realize they don’t have to be bogged down by societal norms, or any rules or restrictions placed on them by other people. I want people to see that I was authentic, that I always stayed true to myself and lived life by my own rules. That’s me – what you see is what you get, and not everyone’s going to like it, but you have to stay true to who you are.”

“I enjoy making people look younger with a healthy appearance for years to come,” she says. Williams is a highly educated Scottsdale native, holding Bachelor’s Degrees in Nursing and Business as well as a Master’s in Nursing from Arizona State University. Her accomplished background led her to 19 years’ experience in providing cosmetic dermatology procedures.

“As a highly trained facial and body aesthetic expert, I have served as a mentor and trainer and have provided clinical preceptorships in Cosmetic Dermatology,” she says. “My passion, knowledge and artistry helps you defy your age and feel and look your best!”

Lisa’s unique and comprehensive background lends itself to Ultra Smooth Skin being among the best locations to receive non-invasive and non-ablative cosmetic treatments like Botox and Juvéderm. Ultra Smooth Skin also holds the coveted “Black Diamond” distinction, which indicates they are in the Top 1% of all Botox and Juvéderm providers nationwide.

They boast a wide array of services including Botox, Dysport, Juvéderm, Restylane Kysse, Clear+Brilliant Laser Resurfacing, Fraxel, Thermage Skin Tightening, CoolSculpting,

“My employees and I maintained a successful and busy practice, undertaking risks in an ever-changing COVID-stricken environment,” she says. “Our years of training and experience allow us to provide effective and compassionate and safe care.”

Williams is also very active in the community, providing charitable donations to organizations such as the Ryan House, American Nurses Association PAC, Junior Achievement of Arizona, and more.

The Advancement in Alzheimer’s Treatment at The BioMed Center Scottsdale

Alzheimer’s disease poses a significant challenge to our aging society, but The BioMed Center in Scottsdale is at the forefront of the battle against this devastating condition. Through personalized treatment plans, innovative therapies, and a strong focus on prevention, Dr. Drobot is paving the way for a future where Alzheimer’s may be effectively treated and, ideally, prevented altogether.

UNDERSTANDING ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE:

Before delving into the groundbreaking work being done at The BioMed Center, it’s essential to understand Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease, a progressive and debilitating neurodegenerative disorder, affects millions of people worldwide, causing memory loss, cognitive decline, and a loss of independence. In the quest for effective treatments and prevention strategies, biomedical research has made remarkable strides, and The BioMed Center Scottsdale is leading the charge. The condition primarily affects older individuals, although

early-onset cases exist. It is characterized by the accumulation of abnormal protein deposits, including amyloid plaques and tau tangles, in the brain, leading to the death of nerve cells and impairing communication between brain regions.

TREATING ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE

Dr. Drobot and his team are at the forefront of exploring novel therapeutic approaches and they take a highly individualized approach to Alzheimer’s treatment. Each patient undergoes extensive assessments, including neurological evaluations, genetic testing, and cognitive testing, to create a personalized treatment plan that targets their specific needs and challenges.

PREVENTING ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE

EXPLORING ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE

Brain frequency refers to the electrical activity generated by the brain, which can be measured and analyzed using electroencephalography (EEG). Dr. Drobot and his team utilize one of only four Brain Frequency™ AI systems nationwide to take an innovative therapeutic approach to improving brain health and wellness. By using proprietary science-based technology to promote optimal brain functioning across mental, emotional, physical and social domains, the team is able to provide insights into the level of activity in various brain regions.

By placing a considerable emphasis on preventive measures, The BioMed interventions have shown promise in reducing the risk of cognitive decline. The range of cognitive screenings and training programs tailored to individuals at risk or in the early stages of the disease help patients understand their genetic predisposition to the disease.

To schedule your individualized assessment, call The BioMed Center Scottsdale at 480.614.5820.

Sensational selfie spots across Flagstaff

From fields of yellow wildflowers and acres of Aspen trees, to perfectly preserved national monuments and majestic mountainsides, Flagstaff boasts some of the most picturesque landscapes in Arizona. In addition to the more nature-focused photo-worthy locales, there are also a bevy of whimsical and wonderful spots for a selfie.

Flagstaff Visitor Center

Though built in what was the city’s train depot back in 1926, the visitor center itself is not the main reason to seek out a selfie here. The photo-op is just outside the center, which boasts a vivid 20-foot mural on the group paying homage to Route 66. For those who may not know, Flagstaff is situated along Route 66, one of the original highways in the United States. Its mystic and symbolism as American’s “Mother Road” has been detailed in popular culture for more than 70 years in everything from songs to literature. www.flagstaffarizona.org.

Mother Road Brewing Company

As with the visitor center, Mother Road Brewing Company is a love letter to all things along Route 66. One of its coolest visuals and sneaky best selfie spots is located just off Mother Road’s entrance behind a mature maple tree. It is a wooden post with colorfully painted directional markers and distances to find all of the other breweries in the city as well as exact mileage to other major cities along Route 66 that helped inspire various brews. Among them is Shamrock, Texas, home to the historic Tower Station and U-Drop Inn Café, which inspired Mother Road’s first canned beer, Tower Station IPA. www.motherroadbeer.com.

Americana Motor Hotel

This newly opened lodging option in Flagstaff pays homage to the region’s deep ties to astronomy, extraordinary surrounding nature, and location along Route 66. As a result, its aesthetic is equal parts utopian optimism and retro-chic. Do not miss the chance to take a photo or two in the lobby in particular, a dizzyingly colorful blend of geometric shapes, boldly striped walls, and retro-inspired furniture capped off with an eccentric mural of a groovy spaceship gliding along the Arizona desert. www.americanamotorhotel.com.

The Sound of Flight

At 4,500-square-feet and three stories tall, this mural – emblazoned across the east wall of the Orpheum Theater – is the largest in Arizona. It was painted by Sky Black, R.E. Wall, and Maggie Dewar over the course of two years and was completed in 2015. Visually, it depicts hundreds of birds flying out of a piano, soaring past works of art including Michelangelo’s David and Rodin’s Thinker before disappearing into the Grand Canyon. There are several meanings in the work, including using it as a metaphor for the buildup and climax of a song, and visitors are welcome to take photographs with it at every angle. www.orpheumflagstaff. com.

True Blue NAU Mural

Located on Leroux Street between Route 66 and Aspen Avenue, this mural – painted by “Mural Joe” Cornelius – bridges Northern Arizona University with the greater community. Completed in 2012, it depicts school visuals including the Lumberjack mascot and learning as well as traditions including football games and the “running of the freshmen.” www.nau.edu.

Blair C. Dworkin shares her passion for equine sculptures

Horses take center stage in the world of Scottsdale sculptor Blair C. Dworkin, owner of Blair C. Dworkin Fine Art.

For the past seven years, the internationally known artist has meticulously captured the grace and beauty of Arabian horses in bronze. Sleek and elegant, these horses are renowned for their high-set tails, big eyes, and well-angulated hips.

“I became mesmerized with them after attending the Arabian Horse Show in Scottsdale 10 years ago and went back for several days to learn more about the breed and enjoy the beauty of the horses,” Dworkin says.

Her strong patriotism prompted her to create her latest statue, Let Freedom Reign. The intricate sculpture depicts an iconic image of a cowgirl riding an Arabian horse and carrying the flag.

“This piece was totally from my heart,” Dworkin says. “I envisioned a sculpture that would promote unity because there is so much division in the world now. I sought to capture the joy and excitement of rodeos when the horses enter the arena to the national anthem. It was an emotional piece for me.”

Dworkin’s talent had its genesis in her childhood when playing with clay was one of her favorite pastimes. Her love of the medium became a driving force that kept evolving. She began with pottery painting and advanced to open studios that provided the ideal environment to play and experiment. She then made the leap to creating ceramics adorned with horses. Her love for the animals began growing up in Memphis Tennessee, where she learned to ride.

“I found out that my customers preferred bronze for its durability, so I transitioned to that medium. I liked what other artists created, but I wanted to do something different,” she says. “I decided to embed semiprecious stones in some of my pieces and create some kinetic ones, such as Mother and Foal, that capture the tender love between a mother horse and her foal.”

Dworkin received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Cum Laude from the University of Memphis. Her career as an artist and independent graphic designer spans over 20 years.

She has had the prestige of having her pieces displayed at the first Arabian horse show in Beijing, China in 2018. In the US, her sculptures grace the homes of several private collectors, such as Wayne Newton. Dworkin also creates horse-themed jewelry, which can be viewed at On the Edge Gallery in downtown Scottsdale starting this September. Her bronzes are available for private viewings.

Are breast cancer screening guidelines changing? What to know

Experts agree that regular mammograms to screen for breast cancer are a key to early detection. But it may seem as if some experts and health care advocacy groups and agencies keep moving the goal posts on screening recommendations.

What age should you start getting routine mammograms? How often? When should you stop? And what else can you do to reduce your breast cancer risk?

In the last 30 years, screening guidelines have changed frequently and were often conflicting, depending on which organizations published them. Now a new draft recommendation expected to be finalized by the end of 2023 from the U.S. Preventative Task Force (USPTF), a federal panel of experts that issues guidelines about preventative care, may clear up some—but not all—of the confusion.

What are the proposed breast cancer screening guidelines?

For women at average risk, the new USPTF recommendation lowers the age to begin routine mammograms to age 40—10 years earlier than previous guidelines. The change is based on research showing the risk of breast cancer in younger women has been climbing. The National Cancer Institute reports that between 2016 and 2019 (the most recent data available) breast cancer rates increased nearly 3 percent annually in women under age 50.

How often should you get a mammogram?

If you’re at average risk, USPTF is now recommending mammograms every two years. However, this guidance differs from many agencies and cancer hospitals, most of which recommend annual screenings.

The USPTF guideline is important because the Affordable Care Act requires private insurers to cover with no copay all exams and procedures the panel recommends. Currently, insurers adhere to the USPTF’s 2002 recommendation, which covers mammograms annually. But, in 2025, that could change to every two years.

“Part of the difficulty is there are many different studies out there. Some studies are old, some used technology for screening that’s now outdated,” says Cynthia Lynch, MD, a Medical Oncologist at City of Hope Phoenix. “However, The American Cancer Society (ACS) and National Comprehensive Cancer Care Network (NCCN) indicate there’s enough data to show there’s a reduction in mortality when you screen on an annual basis versus every two years.

“At City of Hope, we recommend annual mammograms.” Dr. Lynch says.

Here are recommendations for screening mammograms from relevant agencies and organizations:

• USPTF: Currently 50, annually; new recommendation age 40, every two years

• American College of Obstetricians and Gynecology (ACOG): Age 40, annually

• American College of Radiology (ACR): Age 40, annually

• NCCN: Age 40, annually

• Society of Breast Imaging (SBI): Age 40, annually

• ACS: Ages 40 to 54, annually; ages 55 to 74, every two years.

These guidelines only apply to people assigned female at birth who are at average risk for breast cancer.

Dr. Johnson believes a one-size-fits-all approach to breast cancer screening is not ideal. “We know that [Black women] present at a much younger age,” she says. “The death rate for Black women is also 40 percent higher than all races, and ethnicities. We actually need personalized screening, including race-specific mammography criteria and guidelines based not just on age, but on risk factors.”

One research study— Women Informed to Screen Depending on Measures of risk (WISDOM)— is evaluating a personalized approach to breast cancer screening based on each woman’s risk as determined by individual risk factors for breast cancer, including breast density, genes and family health history.

While guidelines are helpful, it’s important to assess your individual breast cancer risk, based on your genetic profile, family history, lifestyle and other factors. Experts recommend asking your primary care doctor or gynecologist to conduct a personal risk assessment by age 30. If you’re at increased risk, your doctor may suggest earlier breast cancer screening, more frequent or intensive screening and medications to proactively reduce your risk.

A risk assessment is based on your age, reproductive history (such as when you started your period, if you gave birth and what age you gave birth) and other factors known to increase risk.

Establish a personal screening plan and stick to it: Schedule a doctor’s visit to discuss your breast cancer risk factors and make a personal mammogram screening plan. Getting regular mammograms enables your doctor to compare results over time and identify breast changes or abnormalities unique to your breasts. Mammograms are proven to identify breast cancer early, often before signs or symptoms occur, when its most treatable.

2023 VOLVO XC90 RECHARGE

A Scandinavian masterpiece of style

VITAL STATS:

2023 Volvo XC90

Recharge AWD

Ultimate

When it comes to the Swedish Scandinavian style notes, Volvo splurged on impeccably opulent materials in the new XC90 Recharge luxury SUV. Seating material is Volvo’s “tailored wool blend,” a no-cost option that, according to the brand, is warmer in winter and cooler than leather in the summer.

The overall look of the interior is smart, debonair and impeccably Scandinavian. The instrument panel, along with everything across the front cabin, is completely swathed in topstitched Nappa leather. There’s a sensual cadence of book-matched, natural-finish wood trim about the door trim and center console. Pencil-thin polished brightwork outlines the instrument panel air vents, steering wheel, door and center console trim, and the infotainment screen. The car tested here included the Bowers & Wilkins premium surround sound ($3,200), fluent and didactic with serene sophisticated graphics that was somewhat complicated to use.

The XC90 isn’t new to the market but there’s new names for its trim levels this year, with the two formerly Inscription and Momentum models now offered as three choices: Core, Plus

and Ultimate. Volvo has eliminated its gas-only T5 and T6 engines, opting for four-cylinder-turbocharged mild-hybrid engines in its pursuit of ending internal combustion engines by 2030. Half of all Volvos will be fully electric by 2025.

The Recharge Ultimate tested here was powered by the 455-hp T8 plug-in-hybrid, the most powerful and fuel-efficient Volvo with an EPA-rated 66 MPGe. Volvo promises 36 miles of all-electric driving before the gas engine kicks in. All-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission are standard. It was decidedly potent with powerful acceleration for passing and it got up to highway speeds quickly. The Ultimate was equipped with four-corner air suspension ($1,800) and handling was nimble, poised and generally free of body roll. It’s easy to drive with good forward visibility and cameras galore.

Overall, the XC90 delivers a comfortable driving experience with some of the best seats in the industry and the vehicle tested came with a handy built-in second-row booster seat for kids. It handles well with a mostly smooth ride, but sportiness handling, like models from BMW, Genesis and Mercedes, isn’t part of its offering.

METROPOLITAN MASTERPIECE

The oldest capital city in the U.S. offers endless art in every direction

Santa Fe became a U.S. city in 1607 and New Mexico’s capital in 1610, making it the oldest capital city in the country. Its roots, of course, are even deeper, with its Native American pueblos dating back to 1050.

Nearly 1,000 years later, Santa Fe retains many proud remnants from all facets of its past through its architecture, food and cultural offerings without feeling like a journey through a ghost town. The area’s downtown is a vibrant mix of past and present, with earth tone adobe buildings still standing alongside Victorian, Italianate, and California Mission Revival-style buildings.

Creative Endeavors

There is art in all directions, especially near the Palace of The Governors, the oldest public building in continuous use in the continental United States. The entire south side of the building, which takes up a city block, is home to the Native American Artisans Portal Program. The whole space is dedicated to local artisans selling handcrafted goods ranging from paintings and sculptures to jewelry and pottery. There are more than 1,500 artists authorized to use the space, and it is open seven days a week.

Adjacent to the portal is the New Mexico History Museum and within walking distance or a short drive are approximately 250 galleries, including Canyon Road Contemporary, Chiaroscuro Contemporary Art, James Roybal Art, and more. Those seeking something exceptionally outside of the box should venture just outside of downtown to Meow Wolf House of the Eternal Return, a 20,000-square-foot and fully immersive 70-room adventure that merges audio-visual effects with mind-bending installations and a sci-fi mystery under one roof.

Edible Art

Art also comes in the form of food in Santa Fe. Just last year, the James Beard Foundation crowned Fernando Olea as among the best chefs in the country. Sazón, his restaurant just two blocks from the main downtown plaza, has been celebrating traditional and contemporary Mexican and New Mexican cuisine since 1991. Guests wait for months to taste his storied degustación menu, a 10-course tasting adventure offered twice nightly that marries ingredients like creamed poblanos with blue crab and amaretto foam, and zucchini blossoms with ginger aioli and chocolate balsamic sauce. Joining Sazón are similarly acclaimed eateries in the area in Geronimo, a AAA Four Diamond and Forbes Four-Star Travel Award winner beloved for its elevated, whimsical menu with global influences; Compound Restaurant, the fine dining flagship of iconic chef Mark Kiffin; Amaya, a celebration of seasonal ingredients and local pueblo and northern New Mexican culinary traditions; and Luminaria Restaurant, which is fine dining in nature but

80 So Scottsdale! August ‘23

also home to a nationally lauded green chile cheeseburger with chile-candied bacon that guests beg for them to package and sell.

Smart travelers mix fine dining with some of the more casual options in order to explore a little of everything, often by adding one or more walking culinary tours of the region. Food Tour New Mexico, in particular, offers a good variety of high-end and casual options, all with a professional guide who can speak to the area’s history, epicurean inspirations, and evolution over time, some with wine and margarita pairings.

Romp Then Recharge

Outside of architectural, traditional, and culinary masterpieces, there are two other types of art in the area as well. The first comes in the form of the idyllic natural surroundings, a canvas painted with desert, mountains, vivid greens, and never-ending sky blues. Sante Fe is located at the southern base of the Rocky Mountains, and the bustling downtown is surrounded by 1.6 million acres of high mountain coniferous national forest, making it as much a dream for connoisseurs of outdoor adventure as fine art. Hikers should not miss traversing the Rio Grande and climbing into the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, while bikers may enjoy one of more than 100 of well-groomed or rugged trails. The Rio Grande also offers a host of river rafting options, with outfitters like New Mexico River Adventures, Big River Raft Trips, and New River Rafting easily accommodating novices and experts alike.

And the final artistic pursuit in Santa Fe? That would be the art of relaxation, perfected at the Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado. The luxury boutique resort features just 65 ultraprivate, adobe-style casitas, including suites, spread across 57 rolling acres in the Sangre de Cristo foothills just a 10-minute drive from the heart of downtown Santa Fe. The casitas are impeccably appointed with heated floors, fireplaces and expansive patios with views for days. They are complemented by a stunning eatery on property in Terra, which offers a traditional menu as well as a private chef’s garden table five-course experience for two to six guests; Terra Bar, always hopping but especially so during its popular build-your-own-margarita mixology classes; the Adventure Center, a full-scale exploration concierge team that builds custom itineraries and private excursions to the best the land has to offer; and the epic spa.

The Spa at the Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado is designed to be both dreamy and romantic, complete with outdoor basking sanctuaries for guests to enjoy post-service featuring private Jacuzzis, saunas, loungers, and bubbly. A can’t-miss treatment includes the new Solo Sound Bath Meditation Session that awakens the chakras and energy channels of the body through an immersive meditative journey guided by the yoga of sound.

The art in every form makes it easy to see why Santa Fe is nicknamed “The City Different.”

SIGNATURE SIPS

Raise a glass to these popular specialties of the house

Sometime in the 1930s or 1940s, a guest at Arizona Biltmore challenged bartender Gene Sulit to dream up a refreshing, tequila-based cocktail to help beat the heat. As a result, the tequila sunrise was born. And while it may have been Arizona’s first signature cocktail, it was far from the last. Here are some of the chicest signature cocktails at venues across the Valley.

Ginger Margarita

J&G Steakhouse

On the menu since opening night in 2008, this twist on the standard Southwestern favorite infuses Asian accents by adding housemade ginger simple syrup to the build, and lining each glass with similarly infused sugar. The ginger’s refreshing herbal aftertaste naturally cools the palate on a hot summer’s day while amplifying the tequila and agave. $17. www. jgsteakhousescottsdale.com.

Last Drop LON’s Last Drop at the Hermosa Inn

The Hermosa Inn was built in the 1930s by cowboy artist Lon Megargee as his residence and art studio. Its bar – Last Drop – is named after his most famous painting, The Last Drop from His Stetson. An homage to the painting since day one, the Last Drop cocktail features a blend of High West Double Rye Whiskey, Luxardo Apricot Liqueur, sweet vermouth, and blood orange. $5 though Sept. 10 to honor the 100year anniversary of the painting; $15 thereafter. www.hermosainn. com.

Piñata Margarita

The Mexicano

When creating the cocktail program for this over-the-top Mexican hotspot, the bar team had carte blanche to go wild, which resulted in this in-your-face fiesta complete with a colorful mini pinata souvenir. The cocktail itself starts with a tequila-based top-shelf margarita and then features the guest’s choice of salt rim, cotton candy, Mexican candy, boba, Sour Patch

Kids, edible flowers, and fresh fruit. $32. www.themexicano.com.

Hula’S Mai Tai

Hula’s Modern Tiki

With nearly half a million mai tais sold since 2009, Hula’s is Scottsdale’s favorite destination for this classic Tiki cocktail. Warning: this is not a fruity take on the classic, as many are today, instead featuring gold rum, dark rum, orgeat almond syrup, orange curacao, and pineapple and lime juices. It is exceptionally spirit-forward with big notes of lime. $12. www.hulasmoderntiki.com.

The Silver Fox Liberty Station and Keeler’s Neighborhood Steakhouse

This sophisticated combination of Buffalo Trace Bourbon, espresso cordial, and black walnut bitters has long been to honor concept founder Paul Keeler. The cocktail became even more special in 2021 when the family-owned restaurants lost Keeler. Today, it is the daily way in which patrons and employees alike can raise a glass to the hospitality icon. $16. www. libertystationtavern.com.

Limoncello Margarita

Campo Italian Bistro & Bar

A mashup of the everyone’s favorite Mexican happy hour import and one of Italy’s most beloved digestifs, often sipped on its own after a meal to aid in digestion, this has been the far-and-away crowd pleaser since Campo opened its doors. It combines liqueur made from lemon zest with Olmeca Altos Reposado, lemon juice and house simple syrup for the perfect mix of sweet and salty in a glass. $14. www.campoitalian.com.

The Spanish word “mochilero” translates to “backpacker” in English, which is fitting given the newly opened Mochilero Kitchen was inspired by chef Jorge Cota’s backpacking trip across Mexico. Upon his return, Cota and his sister Meliza Miranda, a fellow hospitality veteran, put pen to paper on what would become the restaurant as a means to share his favorite food memories from Mexico’s diverse coastal towns. The menu boasts al pastor pork chops, mesquite-grilled skirt steak, Nayarit-style red snapper, enchiladas, tortas, and a Sonoran Hot Dog ($12). It starts with a 4-ounce, bacon-wrapped Kobe beef frank served in a bolillo-style bun, the most popular savory bread in Mexico. The hot dog is topped with black beans; refreshing pico de gallo; crema; and avocado espuma, a flavor-concentrated foam. Mochilero Kitchen, 14850 N. FANCIFUL AND FLORAL

The Americano’s Fiore Di Vitae gifts guests with a bouquet of blooming lavender

With its seasonal cocktail menu, The Americano set out to create a lineup of libations that do far more than catch the eye and taste good.

“Each of our offerings is designed to evoke a memory or harken back to some sort of nostalgia,” says Jacqueline Verge, general manager of The Americano. “For example, one of our cocktails looks modern yet tastes like an orange creamsicle”

Among the most striking summer specialties is the Fiore Di Vitae ($17).

“Fiore Di Vitae, an Italian phrase translating to ‘flower of life’ in English, will transport guests visually and aromatically to vibrant fields of lavender that bloom this time of year,” Verge says.

The Americano bar lead Holly Achs got the idea to create a lavender-based recipe after experimenting with liqueur made from the flower and Ron Colón Salvadoreño Coffee Infused Rum.

“Lavender and coffee have been an increasingly trendy pairing for years, with the floral, calming properties of the flower perfectly balancing the bolder notes in the coffee while complementing its nutty earthiness,” Verge says.

To make Fiore Di Vitae, the coffee rum and lavender liqueur are combined in a shaker with pomegranate liqueur, white rum, Maleza Flores Bitters, and primitivo syrup, which is made by reducing the Italian zinfandel with sugar.

“The pomegranate gives it some zest and white rum creates a rounded finish, while the bitters amp up the lavender, and the primitivo provides a bright sweetness.”

After shaking, the contents are strained into a tall rocks glass that has been texturized with circles of sugar. It is garnished with both dehydrated lavender sprigs and dehydrated lotus root wheels.

CHEF CONVERSATIONS

In the kitchen with Kelly Fletcher of Virtù Honest Craft

Kelly Fletcher is the executive chef of Virtù Honest Craft, where he is taking a modern, global approach to his evolving menu of Mediterranean fare.

Tell us about the menu at Virtù. We have a three-course prix fixe menu with supplements that lets guests choose from all of our best dishes as well as a la carte offerings. We play and tinker with the menu daily, but there are always mind-bending pastas, prime meats, ultrafresh seafood, and whimsical touches like foie gras candy.

When did you start cooking?

My mom was an avid hunter, and when I was 10 years old, she brought in two rabbits that she nabbed during a hunt, challenging me to prepare and cook one, and she would do the same with the other. It sounds wild, but the entire process piqued something. By my early 20s, I made the decision to enter Scottsdale Culinary Institute and never looked back.

Tell us about your culinary journey. I’ve been everywhere including House of Tricks, Zen Culinary, El Chorro, Tuck Shop, and Genuine Concepts before joining Virtù earlier this year. Along the way, I made lifelong friends – especially the Seven Chefs – survived a coma and open-heart surgery and got sober. I just celebrated two years, in fact.

Who are the Seven Chefs?

We are a group of longtime friends and chefs. The initial seven – Cullen Campbell, Joshua Hebert, Scott Holmes, Stephen Jones, Bernie Kantak, Virtù Founder Gio Osso, and me –made national headlines when we collectively cooked for the James Beard House in 2015. Since then, we have added others and hosted dinners as part of the Devour Culinary Classic and for charity.

What is the best piece of cooking advice you have ever received?

I mentored under a French chef who firmly believed that if you served identical perfectly cooked steaks to a table, in a taste test the steak with the best sauce would always win. This motivated me to become a saucier to kick everything I do up a notch.

Upscale tech-driven mini-golf experience Puttshack opens at Scottsdale Quarter

Four to a skateboard park. But the mini golf is just the beginning. There are guest DJs invited in often and when they’re not performing, music is pumping throughout Puttshack, helping keep up a nightclub-like vibe. In fact, dancing along the course is encouraged.

Remember good old-fashioned mini golf courses from the 1980s and 1990s, complete with windmill obstacles and manmade waterfalls? Well, Puttshack is not that kind of mini golf course.

Now open at Scottsdale Quarter, Puttshack is a 25,000-square-foot, twostory entertainment destination unlike anything else in the Valley. It features four competitive courses, each with nine holes. The courses are integrated with Puttshack’s patented Trackaball technology, which powers the entire gameplay experience and provides seamless automated scoring, bonus point opportunities, and interactive games at each hole.

Visually, the space feels like an interactive art installation with glow-in-the-dark elements in every direction, bright colors from floor to ceiling, and themed holes. One of the most popular holes is modeled after beer pong, but with golf balls. Another, called ring of fire, is an obstacle course-inspired hole that challenges players to make choices – play it safe or attempt the wild ramps and hazards – for the chance at a hole in one. Other holes are modeled after everything from a giant-sized Connect

The space is also home to a sit-down restaurant and full-scale cocktail bar. The food menu is globally inspired with items like falafel cakes with chickpea fritters, rainbow slaw, tahini dipping sauce ($11); wood-fired Thai octopus with sesame peanut sauce ($19); Mediterranean lamb skewers ($15); and a Tuscan pork porchetta sandwich with slow-roasted garlic herb pork belly ($18). There is also a lengthy menu of flatbreads, salads, and sandwiches, as well as a signature appetizer called the Arizona tailpipe, which is a spring roll filled with chimichanga chicken, chihuahua cheese, sauteed veggies, and refried beans ($14). A portion of proceeds from every sale of this item benefits the Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center, a local nonprofit dedicated to rescuing, providing sanctuary, and rehabilitating wildlife that has been displaced or orphaned until they are ready to be returned to their natural homes in the wild.

The cocktail menu, featuring 10 signature offerings ranging from $13 to $16, includes a frozen prickly pear margarita ($14), a cold-brew espresso martini ($14), and a spiced pineapple mezcal margarita with a jalapeno-infused popsicle as garnish ($16). There are also ample beers and wines, by both the glass and bottle.

Puttshack is open Sunday to Wednesday from 11 a.m. to midnight and Thursday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Kids and young adults under 21 are welcome until 8 p.m. nightly, after which it becomes an adults-only venue.

Puttshack, located at 15059 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.300.7888; www.puttshack.com.
