Injunction Can Prohibit Smoking by Neighbors or Minimize Cigarettes
Q:
For eight years we have lived in a lovely condominium in the McCormick Ranch area. The owner of the condominium next door was a wonderful gentleman who recently passed away. His children have now sold the condominium to a nasty woman who is a chain smoker. She sits on her patio and smokes constantly. We cannot go outside or have friends over for cocktails on our patio because no one can breathe. This nasty woman just tells us to “shut up” when we ask her to minimize the smoking on her patio. Our HOA refuses to do anything. Is there anything legally that we can do to stop this woman from destroying our health, and the enjoyment of our patio?
A:There are sophisticated machines that can calibrate cigarette smoke levels, similar to sophisticated machines that can calibrate noises from loud parties. If the cigarette smoke levels on your patio can be shown to be unhealthy, a Court can issue an injunction to prohibit or minimize the cigarette smoking.

Though the next season is around the corner (fall begins toward the end of September), there’s still plenty of sunshine and heat to go around in the Valley. Pretend you’re still on vacay with a visit to one of the resort pools around town – we’re breaking our top 12 down, from places to see and be seen to family-friendly spots, starting on page 60. Or, hop in the car for a quick two-hour drive to L’Auberge de Sedona for a memorable Oak Creek experience (page 47).
If you’re looking to keep things a little more chill but not nesting for fall quite yet, enjoy feminine eateries perfect for a girls night or day out (page 54) or cool down with delicious ceviches at local restaurants (page 52). We also have the scoop on Oliver’s (page 106), a new moody cocktail lounge with a fun history in South Scottsdale.
Those eager to get back into the event seen will enjoy reading about Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Wine, Women & Shoes, taking place Aug. 17 at Chateau Luxe. Learn about the luncheon and fashion show on page 56. Feeling inspired to learn more about some philanthropies in the Valley? Pat Petznick, co-founder of Fresh Start Women’s Foundation, is on our cover this month (page 30), giving us insight into the start of the foundation, how it’s still helping more women than ever, and where the future of the nonprofit is headed.
If you’re one of the lucky ones who gets out of town in July – welcome home, we missed you! Enjoy the end of summer in Scottsdale and all the fun it brings.

SOMETHING SHINY
Jewelry designer Tracy Matthews coaches creatives with Flourish & Thrive Academy
What do Michelle Williams, Orlando Bloom and Charlize Theron have in common? They’ve all worn jewelry designed by Tracy Matthews.
“When I was a little kid, I was always really creative. I used to draw wedding dresses for my Barbies, and I’ve always loved
shiny things, especially sparkly jewelry. I loved playing in my mother’s jewelry box,” Matthews says.
While Matthews was attending Loyola Marymount University, her mother suddenly passed away at age 45. With this experience came the realization that life is too short to put your dreams on hold.
Matthews knew it was time to tap into her lifelong desire to combine her creative passions with entrepreneurship – when her college suitemate took a jewelry fabrication class, Matthews was inspired to follow in her footsteps. It was love at first sight.
After graduation, she launched Tracy Matthews Designs Inc. During her 11 years in business, she received attention from various national publications and celebrities. Her work was found in Anthropologie and highlighted by InStyle and the Today show. She even worked with Revlon to create a 20-year commemorative piece for Halle Berry.
But after the 2008 market crash, Matthews decided to close her doors. Not only was the economy in a bad spot, but she was exhausted from the low profit margins of the wholesale business and hustle of attending eight trade shows a year.
“At that time, the independent jewelry market turned into a very trend-focused industry. There was a lot of fast fashion and cheap jewelry out there, big and bold statement pieces. That was not my vibe. I love designing special, meaningful jewelry – the kind of jewelry that people would wear every single day.”
What she had loved most about her business, she realized, was the relationships she made working with her clients. And after a close friend asked her to design her engagement ring, she was certain that she’d found her niche.
Now focused on custom commissions – everything from engagement and wedding rings to heirloom redesigns –Matthews (www.tracymatthews.com) prides herself on creating one-of-a-kind pieces infused with the wearer’s unique spirit.
A Mentor to Many
When she’d launched her first brand in the 1990s, Matthews was surprised by how tight-lipped the jewelry industry was.
“No one was willing to share secrets, vendors or best practices. I used to say, ‘I wish someone would just tell me what to do.’ The only option then was a high-priced business consultant.”
After figuring things out on her own all those years ago, she resolved to help start-up brands in exactly the way she’d needed when she was in their shoes.
Her solution, Flourish & Thrive Academy, is a coaching and consulting company (www.flourishthriveacademy.com) for jewelry and product business owners, many of whom are talented artists but need a hand when it comes to the entrepreneurship side of the coin. An alternative to hiring a costly consultant, her programs focus on individual needs, offering one-on-one coaching in addition to multiweek online courses and minicourses.
“Most creative types didn’t go to school to run a business. However, the world needs their products. With a roadmap, almost anyone can learn how to do it if they are willing to invest in themselves and put the time and energy into learning the how-to. That’s where we shorten the learning curve and help these artists make a great living doing what they love.”
Always Thriving
Having distilled the lessons she’s learned from 30 years in the industry into a methodology she calls the “Desired Brand Effect,”
Matthews – now also an author and podcast host – is motivated every day by the stories of success she hears from her mentees. With Flourish & Thrive’s 12th anniversary approaching, nearly 10,000 students have walked through her virtual doors.
Recently, she has also been focused on hosting creativity and wellness mastermind retreats taking place everywhere from Scottsdale and Austin, Texas, to Mexico and Costa Rica. It’s the perfect opportunity to step back from the daily hustle and refresh.
“As someone who has mentored creatives for a long time, I know that burnout is real! I have found that it’s important for creative founders and entrepreneurs to take time away from their businesses to reignite their passion and creativity and get clarity on their bigger vision.”
When it comes time for Matthews herself to unwind, she looks to travel, adventure and, of course, creativity as ways to connect with the world around her. Her family, including partner Jason Ayers, a fellow entrepreneur and coach, and two teenage girls, add an extra dash of brightness to everything she does.
A lesson she’d like to pass along – to her younger self as much as anyone – is one of boldness. “Take more risks, and don’t overthink. The more you’re willing to fail, the more you’re willing to risk and the more successful you’ll be.”
Though it may seem intimidating, she says, it doesn’t mean you’re a failure if things didn’t turn out the way you’d planned. It’s never too late to change your mind and pivot, as she’s had to do plenty of times throughout her own journey.
“I consider myself a creativity expert now – when you have an abundance of creativity, you’re more joyful and fulfilled, you can solve any problem and you have a more abundant life.”
CREATIVE CALLING
Brittany Arnold helps teens express themselves through art
Brittany Arnold always knew she belonged in the arts. After attending Arizona State University for her undergrad, she earned a master’s in museum studies at Johns Hopkins University while working full time at Scottsdale Arts. Her goal: to become a museum curator.
“As I was studying museum theory, I was accepted into a summer program with the British School at Rome,” Arnold says. “On that trip, I realized I had the mind of an educator, not a curator.”
What excited her most, she discovered, was not which artworks were selected to be in a museum, but how people learned about the art. Today, Arnold serves as community engagement manager for Scottsdale Arts Learning & Innovation, a role which, after eight years with the organization, has allowed her to take the reins of the Visions program.
Through Visions (www.scottsdaleartslearning. org/visions), promising art students from six local high schools attend workshops with professional teaching artists, tour the schools of art at local universities and community colleges, and, at the close of the yearlong program, professionally exhibit their artwork. This year’s exhibition, Visions ’24, is on display through September in the Center Space gallery.
“It can be a lonely place out there for teenagers, trying to figure out who you are, what you like, who you belong with. I got my start as a fellow art nerd in high school, so I have an understanding of what it’s like. The arts allow them to express themselves in times that words sometimes fail, to open up more, feel a connection with their peers and be vulnerable in a way that’s special to them.”
Arnold is excited to see the program, which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, focus even more on career readiness and how the abilities needed to express oneself through art – from resilience to communication skills – can be applied in all areas of life.
The highlight of her job remains seeing the direct impact on the lives of the next generation. “It’s extremely rewarding to see the kids’ faces light up as they work with an artist or learn a new skill in a workshop. Every day I’m exposed to such beautiful art and ideas, making an impact on the community. What more could I ask for?”

LESSONS IN STEMISTRY
Teenage entrepreneur Dylan Capshaw puts his spin on the local coffee shop
BY KAYLOR
Dylan Capshaw’s list of accomplishments begins as follows: opening three locations of his hybrid coffeeand-flower shop Stemistry; working with state officials to rescue exotic animals at his sanctuary, Capshaw Wildlife; starting a nonprofit that shipped his proprietary 3D-printed masks to first responders during the pandemic; becoming a licensed helicopter pilot.
Oh, and he graduated from high school this May. Did we mention he’s only 18 years old?
“Something I’ve said in my mind for years is ‘Why wait?’” Capshaw says. “I have never had the desire to wait until I finished my education or reached a certain age to begin chasing my dreams.”
The seeds for his current venture, Stemistry (www. stemistry.com), were planted when he was sent home from school during the pandemic. Surrounded by his rescues – from birds to reptiles to a kangaroo – an idea took root.
“I decided to start selling the exotic plants my animals ate. I grew an online floral marketplace for two years, saving up every penny before eventually transforming the business into a brick-and-mortar store at 15 years old.”
Now a build-your-own bouquet bar and coffee lab with a location in Scottsdale and two in Phoenix, Stemistry has taught Capshaw countless lessons, including how to handle the challenges of hiring a team of adult staff while he was still in high school.
“I learned that to gain their respect, I had to earn it, and that wasn’t easy,” says Capshaw, who knew it was all worth it as he celebrated the grand opening of the first Stemistry. “I was standing beside the mayor of Scottsdale with my brand-new store behind me and a crowd of excited people in front of me. It was all in an instant that the constant hard work I had put in paid off.”
Looking forward, Capshaw – who in 2020 was a finalist for Nickelodeon and Time Magazine’s Kid of the Year award – is excited to start college at Arizona State University this fall while managing his businesses and nonprofits. With ambitions of one day getting involved in local politics, Capshaw hopes that in everything he does, he continues to remind himself and others that, as Mark Twain put it, “The secret of getting ahead is getting started.”
SLAM DUNK STYLE
Jacob Fann sports an athletic-forward look
BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY
Jacob Fann, the founder of Fanntastic Media, has carved a niche for himself in digital marketing. However, his influence extends beyond his career; his personal style speaks volumes about his character and approach to life.
As a basketball enthusiast, Fann draws inspiration for his laid-back, sporty style from JJ Redick, a player known for his classic and polished look.
“I’ve looked up to him for a while since we play the same position,” he says.
This influence is evident in Fann’s favorite brands, including Zara, Adidas, Jordan, and Nike, all merging quality and comfort suiting his active lifestyle.
Fann’s dedication to self-care is perhaps the most defining element of his style, from his signature hairdo to his skin care routine.
“I’m a diva when it comes to my hair and my skin,” he says.
Fann’s favorite summer trend? Short shorts, which align perfectly with his sporty aesthetic. He also believes in the underrated appeal of long sweatshirts paired with shorts, a combination that balances warmth and ease.
Do you have any secret style hacks? By pulling up the legs of pants to just above the knees, you can create a casual and sporty look perfect for warmer weather or a quick workout session.
What’s the best fashion trend of 2024?
One thing I’ve noticed is that the younger generation is very into maintaining their looks which wasn’t the case when I was growing up.
How does your career influence your style? When you own your own business, you’re able to create your own style and image to match how you want to be portrayed. My style is unique in the sense that it’s memorable and that’s what I love about it.

PRACTICAL SOPHISTICATION
Naomi Fayzulayev’s style is a harmonious blend of timeless pieces and trendy styles
BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY
Naomi Fayzulayev, owner of Beso Wellness and Beauty, is not only a dedicated board-certified family nurse practitioner but also a mom of five, a wife, and a dog mom. Her life is a testament to balancing various roles while maintaining a sense of personal style that is both elegant and comfortable.
Fayzulayev’s style philosophy is evident in her favored high-waisted skinny jeans paired with fitted button-down shirts. “This combination makes me feel confident and comfortable while showcasing a polished yet effortlessly stylish aesthetic,” she says.
Over the years, Fayzulayev’s style has transformed significantly to create a streamlined look. “My style has evolved from youthful experimentation with bold trends in my 20s to a more refined and sophisticated aesthetic,” she says.
She’s guided by a few secret style hacks: Cinching oversized dresses or blazers cinched with a skinny belt and cuffing the sleeves of button-downs.
This summer, Fayzulayev’s go-to items include a light, wide-leg jumpsuit paired with Christian Dior sandals and modest yet fashionable swimsuits from La Blanca. Accessories like a comfortable pair of Gucci Princetown mules and minimalistic jewelry complement her overall look.
What is your favorite summer trend?
Flowing maxi dresses paired with Tory Burch sandals. They offer a perfect blend of comfort and style, keeping me cool while looking effortlessly chic.
What’s the best fashion trend of 2024?
The resurgence of warm tones, which bring a rich and cozy feel to any wardrobe. The return of preppy fashion elements like collared shirts and pleated skirts add a timeless and polished touch to modern outfits.
What fashion era needs to be revived? I believe the ’90s era in fashion needs a revival. Its blend of minimalist chic, grunge and bold streetwear offered a diverse and expressive range of styles that still feel relevant today.

CO-FOUNDER OF FRESH START WOMEN’S FOUNDATION
When Pat Petznick-Wick founded Fresh Start Women’s Foundation with her late sister Beverly Stewart, she knew they had a success on their hands. But to them, success wasn’t concerned with money or fame – it was the ability to reach women in need, to provide them with the resources and opportunities necessary for their success.
Petznick’s own journey en route to Fresh Start was greatly impacted by her childhood, growing up in a then-remote area of Arizona.
“My family lived in a small home out in the country in the northwest outskirts of the Valley,” says Petznick, noting she had to find ways to entertain herself and be creative.
Her father, an entrepreneur who built a bustling cattle business from the ground up, was a strong influence when it came to passing down his business skills and personal lessons.
“He taught us how to bring people together, how to lead with confidence, drive and determination,” she says. “Family was everything. My mother was particularly supportive when I was diagnosed with dyslexia in seventh grade, and Beverly was my best friend and the perfect older sister. She inspired me my whole life.”
EARLY DAYS
Petznick began her career in the beauty and fashion industry, working as a promotion director for a model and talent agency, then as a promotional makeup artist for Revlon. During that time, founder Charles Revson personally asked her to serve as a national representative. But the travel demands would have taken her away from her young family, so Petznick declined, which eventually led to her forming a partnership with Rolf Lohse in 1988.
While growing a young Rolf’s Salon, Petznick and her sister realized this was the perfect opportunity to implement a program of their own. Over the years, Petznick had watched the women in her family struggle through hard times – her grandmother becoming the sole supporter of her family, her mother battling health problems, her sister Beverly’s kidnapping in grade school – and experienced her own share of challenges. Now, she had her chance to pursue her passion project – making a tangible impact on the lives of women in need.
“There was a real lack of opportunity
for women and we genuinely wanted to do something together that would change the lives of women. Fresh Start at Rolf’s turned out to be the perfect starting point when, in 1992, we began doing makeovers for displaced homemakers. From there, the rest is history.”
COMMUNITY CARES
What began as one day of pampering at the salon each month for women in need of a confidence boost has since blossomed into a nationally-recognized foundation that has supported over 60,000 women on their personal journeys.
One of the driving missions for all involved is the importance of sparking multigenerational change – ripples that can
be felt on the family level, as well as in the community as a whole.
From workshops and classes to the strategic Impact Program – which focuses on stability, education and employment, and self-sufficiency – Fresh Start Women’s Foundation (www.freshstartwomen.org) is all about empowering women to overcome their personal barriers and achieve economic independence. Importance is placed on family stability, including housing and parenting, physical and mental health, financial literacy, education, and career opportunities that provide a living wage and tie in to the individual’s future goals.
This May, Petznick pledged $1 million to Fresh Start to name the Petznick Education Center, while also
commemorating the release of The Fresh Start Story. The book, written by founding board member Marlene Klotz Collins, celebrates the nonprofit’s storied 30-year history.
Throughout that time and now, Petznick has been guided by her own set of personal mantras. For her, the fullest definition of success comes down to managing your victories, picking yourself up from failure, never saying “no,” and – most importantly of all – always living in gratitude and humility.
Though this all began with a single idea, there was never a doubt in Petznick’s mind that she and her sister were on the right track.
Simply put, she says, “There was a need. I remember standing in our 11th floor offices, looking out over the city, pondering the thousands of women who could use the services we had already started to offer. There are so many women who feel hopeless in situations seemingly beyond their control. They are without the support of family and friends, unsure of how to take a first step for a new life. Hope is a priceless gift. Introducing resources that allow the opportunity to thrive and achieve self-sufficiency is life-changing.”
THE NEXT LEG
While the past has been bright, the future looks even brighter for Fresh Start. Under
the leadership of President and CEO Kim McWaters, who had previously served on the board of directors for over a decade, the organization is in the perfect position to help thousands more women achieve economic independence and personal empowerment in the coming years.
“There have been so many unforgettable moments,” Petznick says. “Meeting great designers like Ralph Lauren, Oscar de la Renta and Carolina Herrera. Meeting other notables like Margaret Thatcher and Oprah Winfrey. Publishing The Fresh Start Story, the 30-year history of our organization. The excitement of having a first contact to start the founding board of Fresh Start, and putting together that founding board.”
In addition to Fresh Start’s board, none of this would have been possible without their partners – collaborations with employers that provide career training opportunities; schools and training providers, who connect women with education and certifications; and community partners who specialize in addressing urgent needs, from health to finances to family.
For Petznick, there are still plenty of familiar faces in the halls of Fresh Start, a sign that the organization she and Beverly founded decades ago is in good hands.
“I am so proud that my sons and their wives, Earl and Melinda and Olen and Belle, and their daughters Alex and Jessica, have been part of Fresh Start from the very beginning. Today, my granddaughters-in-law, Lexi and Dani, are also involved. And I’m hopeful one day my beautiful great-granddaughters and -grandsons will also serve the mission of Fresh Start.”
The family enjoys spending time together at their historic D.A. Ranch in Page Springs (www.daranch.com), which is also open for public and private events, including tastings of their estate-grown wines. Petznick and her husband Mike enjoy traveling and playing golf, tennis and pickleball. And with her father’s cattle business now in its fourth generation thanks to her sons, Petznick’s spirit of gratitude is still exercised on the daily.
“I am blessed with a very full life. To have them all share in my legacy as they continue and begin building their own means the world to me. My family members are my legacy.”

This balance of new and classic ensures that clients receive treatments that are both cutting-edge and enduring.
Charles describes the current industry trend as a return to natural beauty, moving away from overfilled lips and cheeks. “People want to look like themselves, just more ‘refreshed,’” he says. This philosophy aligns perfectly with Glo Medspa’s mission to enhance natural beauty and boost clients’ confidence.
Exciting developments are on the horizon for Glo Medspa, as Charles’s daughter has recently completed aesthetic school and will be joining the team. “She is my ‘Teen Facial Expert,’” Charles proudly shares. Her addition to the team brings a fresh perspective and youthful energy to the practice.

PILATES WITH PURPOSE
Jodi Melton teaches Pilates for every body
The Firm Body Pilates, led by Jodi Melton, is fueled by Jodi’s deep passion for Pilates and its transformative effects. With over forty years in the fitness industry, Jodi has harnessed Pilates as a powerful tool for holistic health and personal empowerment.
Jodi’s Pilates journey began with skepticism, stemming from her extensive fitness background. While living in Hawaii, a friend convinced her to try Pilates, an experience that exceeded her expectations. Initially viewed as a fleeting trend, Jodi soon discovered its profound benefits, leading her to dive deeper into Pilates at the PhysicalMind Institute, known for integrating physical therapy principles with Pilates.
Decades later, Jodi’s dedication to Pilates emphasizes safety and mastery in every session. She reflects on her journey with humility, acknowledging that while she never considered herself an expert in many areas, her extensive practice and study of Pilates have granted her a remarkable understanding of the body. This expertise allows her to cater to a wide range of clients, from professional athletes to individuals recovering from surgeries or living with chronic conditions.
The Firm Body Pilates is versatile, catering to a diverse clientele including NFL, NBA, and NHL athletes, pregnant women, seniors, post-surgery patients, and those managing chronic conditions like multiple sclerosis and osteoporosis. Jodi’s experience includes supporting breast cancer survivors and stroke victims, demonstrating Pilates’ adaptability to various fitness levels and health challenges.
One of Pilates’ core strengths is its adaptability. Jodi highlights that Pilates can be as gentle or as intense as needed, offering everything from subtle, lengthening movements to rigorous challenges. This flexibility often surprises new clients, who initially perceive Pilates as merely stretching, only to find it a highly effective and invigorating workout.
At its core, Pilates focuses on strengthening the spine, deep abdomen, pelvis, and hips, enhancing overall body alignment and control. Core muscles, such as the erector spinae, internal and external obliques, transverse abdominis, and rectus abdominis, play a crucial role. However, the benefits extend beyond the core to the extremities, offering a comprehensive fitness approach that improves flexibility, strength, and posture.
Despite its proven benefits, Pilates is often misunderstood. Many equate it with simple stretching, underestimating its effectiveness. Jodi is passionate about dispelling these myths, encouraging individuals to experience Pilates firsthand to appreciate its full range of benefits.
Under Jodi’s guidance, Firm Body Pilates has earned a reputation for excellence, reflected in multiple awards and accolades. The large studio’s environment is designed to be welcoming and supportive, making it ideal for both newcomers and experienced practitioners.
Recently, Jodi has expanded her business ventures by partnering to open a Vita Sana FitWear clothing store located conveniently next to her studio. This exciting addition to the complex offers clients a curated selection of stylish and comfortable activewear brands, including Spiritual Gangster, Free People, Aviator Nation, and Glyder.

Inside Katie Mann’s Curated Medical
Katie Mann focuses on innovation and personalized care. As the founder of Curated Medical, Katie combines her extensive background in nursing with a deep passion for aesthetics to offer a unique and elevated experience to her clients.
Katie’s journey into aesthetics began during her time as a home health nurse while simultaneously pursuing her nurse practitioner degree. Her longstanding interest in skincare, coupled with her early experiences with Botox, led her to discover the field of aesthetics. “When I learned about aesthetics, I knew it was a great fit because it allowed me to combine the parts that I loved healthcare and medicine with an industry that I was passionate about,” Katie shares.
Since the beauty and wellness industry is ever-evolving, with new products, techniques, and technologies emerging constantly, Katie attends conferences and training sessions with world experts several times a year. This continuous education allows her to navigate trends and products in a clinical setting, ensuring she offers only the best to her clients. “It’s important not to jump on the bandwagon too soon,” she advises, emphasizing the need for a discerning approach to new innovations.
At Curated Medical, client satisfaction is paramount. Katie ensures this through meticulous communication and a personalized approach to each treatment plan. She spends ample time with each patient, discussing their treatment plans in detail to ensure mutual understanding.
Incorporating new trends while maintaining classic and timeless practices is a delicate balance that Katie masters effortlessly. She evaluates new products and devices thoroughly, often waiting a year to see their performance before integrating them into her practice to ensure that her patients will truly benefit. This year, Curated Medical introduced Noon Aesthetics, “no peel” chemical peels, the Sculpt Facial with microcurrent technology, and skinboosters like Skinvive.

Cheryl Schaaf, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC is redefining self-love and transformation
Love Aesthetics & Wellness, founded by Cheryl Schaaf, Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner, is known for compassion, expertise, and empowerment in aesthetics, intimate wellness, and weight loss.
Cheryl’s journey into the world of nursing and aesthetics began with a pivotal moment during a plastic surgery consultation. Disheartened by the surgeon’s lack of empathy, it was his nurse’s comforting presence that ignited Cheryl’s desire to pursue nursing, particularly in the realm of aesthetics. Driven by the mission to provide others with the same comfort and confidence she received, Cheryl embarked on a transformative career path.
However, her journey was not without challenges. Despite initial academic pursuits in business marketing, Cheryl boldly chose to pivot towards nursing against the advice of her loved ones. Overcoming hurdles such as lengthy waiting lists and a cross country move from California to Florida, Cheryl obtained her Associate’s, Bachelor’s, and eventually Master’s Degree in Nursing, while working for a plastic surgery team in the hospital setting, laying the foundation for her future endeavors.
In 2015, upon moving to Arizona, Cheryl’s life took a transformative turn when she discovered the profound impact of intimate wellness and sexual health. “Witnessing the transformative effects these procedures had on women’s self-esteem and their relationships solidified my decision to incorporate them into my practice permanently,” she shares.
Today, Love Aesthetics & Wellness offers a range of non-surgical aesthetic treatments, intimate wellness procedures, and medical weight loss programs. Popular treatments include Botox, Jeuveau, fillers, lasers, RF, Femilift, Viora, OShot, peptides, and medical weight loss treatments such as semaglutide with weekly coaching and InBody assessments.
Cheryl’s expertise and compassionate approach have earned her the trust and appreciation of her patients thanks to her positive and welcoming environment where clients of all ages feel empowered and supported. Cheryl’s many accolades include being named “Best Botox Injector 2020” and “Most Likely to Femilift your Spirits 2022.”
Looking towards the future, Cheryl’s focus extends beyond professional success to prioritize love and fulfillment in every aspect of her life. Inspired by her grandmother’s wisdom and her own personal growth, she cherishes moments of peace, connection, and joy, both within her practice and in her personal life. “As I continue on my journey, I have come to realize that true success lies in finding love and happiness in all that I do,” she shares.

The Skin Clinic takes pride in its customized approach to patient care. Recognizing that aesthetics is not a one-size-fitsall industry, the clinic dedicates time to developing personalized treatment plans for each client. Briggette emphasizes the importance of “after” pictures as a testament to the success of their customized skin care journeys.
The clinic’s menu is carefully curated, featuring only treatments and products that are scientifically proven to be

CEVICHE ALL DAY
Refreshing marinated seafood dishes
Even landlocked Arizona is bursting with high-quality seafood. And on a hot day, nothing hits the spot like a bowl of ceviche – raw seafood “cooked” in an acidic, often spicy marinade known in Peru as “leche de tigre,” or tiger’s milk. From citrus-forward to extra spicy to subtly sweet, here are five local spins on ceviche that are guaranteed to cool you down.
BY KAYLOR JONES
Baja Shrimp Ceviche
Buck and Rider
Known for its raw bar, with high-quality ingredients flown in fresh every day, Buck & Rider has made a name as one of the top spots in the Valley for all things seafood. The ceviche pairs wild shrimp from the Sea of Cortez with vibrant lime, creamy avocado, and crisp cucumber and tomato. Finished with a sprinkle of cilantro, this shareable plate is the perfect companion to any of the unique sushi rolls, fish or beef dishes on the menu. $19. www.buckandrider.com.
Coconut Lemongrass Ceviche
Diego Pops
With three different options on the menu, Diego Pops is a must-visit for anyone craving shrimp ceviche. The most unique among them – and not just because it’s served inside a coconut – is the Coconut Lemongrass Ceviche. Its nuanced flavor profile is thanks to the titular ingredients, which are often used in Southeast Asian cuisine. Also on the menu are the Aguachile and Cocktail ceviches, which let the shrimp shine alongside tomato, cucumber, lime and jalapeno, with the Cocktail Ceviche also featuring avocado. Whatever your choice, don’t forget to pair it with one of Diego Pops’ signature cocktails, which can be ordered “Diego’s way” if looking for even more spice. $16-$17. www.diegopops.com.
Hot & Raw Tropical Ceviche
Sol Cocina
The fruity notes – and elevated heat level –of habanero are complemented by fresh and bright tropical fruits in Sol Cocina’s spin on ceviche, which is served with red beet chips for scooping. The sashimi-grade fish shares the stage with sweet potatoes for a starchier ceviche that can be enjoyed as an appetizer or an entree. Try it alongside some of the other fruit-forward “antojitos” (elevated takes on Mexican street food) on the menu, like the Guacamole Granada or Coconut Calamari. $21. www.solcocina.com.
Ceviche
Los Sombreros
The avocado-topped shrimp ceviche at Los Sombreros, a Mexican eatery run by James Beard Award-nominated chef Jeff Smedstad, is served over crispy tostadas for an irresistible textural contrast. To please every member of the table, it can be ordered vegan – in which the shrimp is subbed for cauliflower for a veggie-only dish that’s just as tasty as the original. $12-$14. www.lossombreros.com.
Rainbow & Lobster Ceviches
Sumomaya
Sumomaya always delivers on its promise of showstopping Mexican-Asian fusion cuisine. On the menu here are the Rainbow Ceviche, in which tuna, salmon and yellowtail are tossed in white soy and jalapeno; and the one-of-akind Lobster Ceviche, complete with coconut-lime water and mango chamoy. And thanks to the tapas-style dining concept, there’s nothing stopping diners from ordering one of each – with some sake on the side to wash them down! $20-$30. www.sumomaya.com.

Vibrant floral decor blooms in every direction, especially in the cavernous side patio, which is covered from floor to ceiling with white, pink and red roses. The menu is focused on charcuterie boards for every taste – even brunch-themed boards –and each colorful cocktail is crafted to be photographed. www.moncherirestaurants.com.

Open for breakfast and brunch, Little Snitch has an array of pastries and coffee drinks as well as morning staples ranging from bagel and croissant sandwiches to a traditional English breakfast. The eatery also specializes in flaky morning pies filled with savory ingredients including Italian sausage, ham and eggs, and butternut squash. www.littlesnitchscottsdale.com.

SOLE SISTERS
Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Wine, Women & Shoes raises funds for youth mentoring
BY KAYLOR JONES
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona (BBBSAZ) has been a fixture in the Valley for nearly 70 years. During that time, the program – which pairs volunteer Bigs with Littles aged 6 through 18 – has provided one-on-one mentorship to thousands of children in need of some extra support. Many are growing up in poverty, come from single-parent homes or are dealing with parental incarceration – but no matter what background they come from, all matches are funded by donations.
On Aug. 17, BBBSAZ will host Wine, Women & Shoes, a fun-filled fundraiser taking place at Chateau Luxe. Emceed by Susan Casper of Arizona’s Family, the afternoon will culminate in a live fashion show that highlights the heartfelt stories of local Big and Little Sisters.
“It’s really fun that we get to showcase some Bigs and Littles in the fashion show,” says Jessica Whitney, vice president of development and marketing for BBBSAZ. “The Littles get to have a private shopping experience at Macy’s with their big sister and pick coordinating outfits to feature on the runway.”
The event will also include a tasting of Tarbell’s Cha Cha Mouche wines; a live auction; lunch; the opportunity to network; and a marketplace of boutique vendors selling jewelry, clothing and homeware.
This year, the fundraiser was organized by an all-women committee, many of whom are Big Sisters themselves and all passionate about raising funds and awareness for the nonprofit. But not to worry, there’s a role for the men as well – dubbed the “Shoe Guys,” participating volunteers will individually source donations for BBBSAZ leading up to the day, and whoever raises the most funds will be declared the King of Sole – complete with crown and scepter, of course.
The main goal of the fundraiser is to provide continued support to current matches while opening the doors for many
more. Currently, there are 200 children on the waitlist hoping to be paired with a Big of their own. Whitney, who has worked for the nonprofit since 2008 and now oversees its marketing, PR and fundraising efforts, saw firsthand the positive effects of mentorship in her circle growing up.
“There are so many kids who want a mentor, who don’t yet have that extra layer of support to help them expand their horizons and make better choices,” she says. “Kids are up against so much in our community right now. Many of us use social media too much, but the way it affects kids is really drastic and scary. There are higher rates of suicide and depression, but having an extra friend in your life – someone who consistently shows up for you and genuinely cares about you – can make a really huge difference for these kids.”

INNER INSPIRATION
Joe Netherwood’s interesting path to painting Western, wildlife and surf artwork
BY GABBY LEIGHTON
Though Joe Netherwood has been interested art for almost as long as he can remember, his life took him in many directions before he pursued a career in his craft.
Raised in Richmond, Virginia, Netherwood’s parents always encouraged his passion for art, music and reading. His love for drawing began in fourth grade, and he credits teachers throughout his life for his artistic foundation.
In high school, he was the drummer for a rock band in the ‘60s, and his journey led him to the Air Force. After that, he worked as a designer and an illustrator in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he studied with several faculty members of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. At that time, he also pursued a career in stand-up comedy, working his way up the ladder from an open mike performer to, eventually, headlining comedy clubs up and down the East Coast.
Growing up, Netherwood was fascinated by cowboy and Indian movies and TV shows, and, later, Art of the West and Southwest Art magazines. So much so, that a visit to the Brandywine Museum of Art and seeing N.C. Wyeth’s classic Western illustrations inspired him to begin his painting career.
“This trip was the catalyst that started me on my career as a fine artist and influenced me to portray the love of the West that I’ve had since childhood,” he says.
Mostly self-taught, with some help some faculty members of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Netherwood’s paintings are filled with color, detail and soul. First, he comes up with an idea for a painting, then he researches different subjects and backgrounds, choosing the model and colors next. “The painting flows from my brain, through my heart and out through the brush.”
His portfolio also includes paintings on wildlife and surfing –he spent his teenage years reading about surfing and also doing the sport in Virginia Beach and the Outer Banks of North Carolina when camping out with his family most summers. “[In my surf-inspired artwork], I combine the natural beauty of the ocean with the excitement of riding a wave.”
Netherwood’s paintings have been juried into many exhibits at museums and galleries – including Museum of Western Art, Trailside Gallery, Coeur d’Alene Gallery, the Gilcrease Museum, and more – and have also been featured in Western Art Collector, Western Art & Architecture, Cowboys & Indians, and Southwest Art, among other publications. He has been a member of the Sonoran Arts League for many years, and served as a board member. He currently has paintings in Hold Your Horses at the Phippen Museum in Prescott, and will have paintings in the 42nd Annual Roundup Exhibition and Sale at the Museum of Western Art in Kerrville, Texas, in 2025.

This May, Tiffany & Co. debuted the Tiffany Titan by Pharrell Williams collection. The famed singer, rapper, songwriter, record producer, and fashion designer drew inspiration from the water and Poseidon, ruler of the sea and King of Atlantis, which is also the name of the community where Williams grew up in Virginia Beach, Virginia. As such, the jewelry pieces – including necklaces, earrings, bracelets and rings – all incorporate sharp, spear-like spikes with a flair of punk spirit. The earrings shown here feature bold contoured links crafted from 18-karat gold and black titanium for a striking contrast, with the titanium being a nod to beauty in blackness. Fishtail-set pave diamonds allow light to enter from every angle, another intentional detail found throughout the collection. $15,900 at Tiffany & Co., www.tiffany.com.

2024 TOYOTA LAND CRUISER
The brand’s legendary flagship model makes its triumphant return
BY JIM PRUETER
After being discontinued three years ago, Toyota’s flagship of seven decades, the Land Cruiser, has returned as a smaller, more affordable and completely redesigned SUV for 2024.
The new Land Cruiser is offered in three trim levels: the base Land Cruiser 1958, Land Cruiser and Land Cruiser First Edition. It seats five and is powered by a 326-horsepower, 465-pound-feet of torque, 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that integrates an electric motor into an 8-speed automatic transmission Toyota calls the i-Force Max.
Styling of the new Land Cruiser is a complete departure from the last iteration, drawing largely on its charming retro heritage design cues. This is especially apparent in the 1958 trim, which features round headlights and “Toyota” spelled out in the grille, a look last seen on the 40-series Land Cruiser from the early 1960s. Rectangular LED headlamps on the mid-trim Land Cruiser suggest the later FJ62 Series. The First Edition, which is limited to just 5,000 units for 2024, also gets the round headlights. Toyota wouldn’t comment whether the 5,000 are all sold out so it’s possible buyers could find one, but at a premium cost.
In terms of overall size, this year’s model is smaller than the previous Land Cruiser and it is officially classified as a mid-sized SUV.
The overall look of the interior is (much like the exterior) blocky by design in a pleasing vintage kind of way. The most luxe trim, the First Edition, refines the convenience and comfort quotient, including leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, a 14-speaker JBL premium audio system, a moonroof, a head-up display, and a center console cool box to keep beverages cold. For off-roading enthusiasts, it retains the fulltime four-wheel drive system with an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case but now utilizes a Torsen limited-slip differential and a locking rear differential. There’s up to 8.7 inches of ground clearance and all come with a standard tow hitch with a 6,000-pound capacity. Overall, the return of the Land Cruiser is a more than welcomed favorite. But make no mistake; the new Land Cruiser isn’t the same vehicle as the previous model and if tradition and reputation of the Land Cruiser is to be upheld, its offroad talents and capabilities will be everything and more than the leviathan it replaced.

EPIC EXPLORATION
Pearl Seas Cruises debuts a 14-night cruise through the Great Lakes
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY PEARL SEAS CRUISES: PEARL MIST
For more than 15 years, Pearl Seas Cruises – a Cruise Critic’s Cruisers’ Choice Award winner for Best Small Ship Line in the U.S. & Canada – has offered an intimate means to explore the Great Lakes, Canadian Maritimes, St. Lawrence Seaway, and New England. This year, for the first time ever, the brand will not only operate four different itineraries that visit 16 ports of call, but it has also introduced a new 14-Night Great Lakes Explorer cruise that provides the opportunity to sail all five Great Lakes in a single journey.
The adventure begins in Toronto, and there is a precruise package that invites guests to arrive a day ahead of departure to stay at the five-star Four Seasons Hotel Toronto in the exclusive Yorkville neighborhood. Prior to the cruise, the package also includes a city excursion, allowing for exploration of the Saint Lawrence Markets, Chinatown, the Distillery District, and the renowned Fashion District.
Once on board, expect to visit Niagara Falls from the Ontario side with a local guide well-versed in the best vantage points as well as the importance of the region in history. The boat also has stops in: Cleveland, where there are
myriad adventures from which to choose, including the chance to experience the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the buzzy downtown in the evening; Detroit, which offers time at the Detroit Institute of Arts, a remarkable museum located in the heart of midtown with more than 65,000 works, and walks along The Dequindre Cut Greenway, a 2-mile urban recreational path that offers a pedestrian link between the East Riverfront and historic neighborhoods; and Marquette, offering miles of Lake Superior shoreline dotted with historic lighthouses as well as a slew of local breweries, wineries and tap houses.
There are also stops in regions that are not as widely known. Among them: Parry Sound, a picturesque port town inside the UNESCO-designated Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve; Mackinac Island, a living Victorian town where motorized vehicles are prohibited in favor of bikes and horse-drawn carriages; Sault Sainte Marie, located at the junction of Lake Superior and Lake Huron; and Duluth, the biggest inland harbor in the world.
The new sailing starts at $10,800 per person based on double occupancy – with some sailings inclusive of airfare – and takes place on the Pearl Mist, which is limited to just 210 total guests and recently completed a renovation. Guests can expect elegant and comfortable furnishings and a variety of spaces to both revel and relax as well as multiple open sun decks, a fitness area, and a glass-enclosed dining room offering panoramic views. Each sailing boasts onboard historians and naturalists, a culinary program featuring locally sourced ingredients, all-inclusive dining, evening entertainment with a focus on live music, Wi-Fi, and twice daily stateroom service. Rooms range from 275 to approximately 600 square feet, and all have unobstructed ocean views, flat-screen televisions, fully furnished private balconies, and full-length sliding glass doors to offer spectacular views.

The natural landscape really sings in the welcoming courtyard and expansive backyard. Anchored by a beautifully resilient Ironwood tree, the private backyard retreat features a tiered deck that leads to a pool, a Jacuzzi, and a rock waterfall. The covered patio is adorned with stacked stone accents and a built-in fireplace and barbecue.
The interior is equally mesmerizing. Cast-iron double front doors open to a formal living room. The space is rich in texture, featuring a floor-to-ceiling stone-clad fireplace, a dramatic staircase with a decorative iron railing, and pristine marble floors. Accordion-style doors provide easy access to the backyard and allow natural light to fill the space. Nearby sits a quaint den, which also offers access to the backyard, and an impressive kitchen.
Dressed in French country style, the kitchen utilizes varying textures to create richness. Peripheral Neuropathy: The Next Step
WHAT’S NEW WITH PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY?
I believe we may have found a missing link in treating peripheral neuropathy. For those suffering it may be because the smaller, microvascular vessels are not functioning properly. There may be a lack of blood flow between the smaller vessels and the diseased nerves.
WHY IS BLOOD FLOW BETWEEN SMALL VESSELS AND NERVES IMPORTANT?
Blood contains the oxygen and nutrients your tissues need to survive. Good circulation is necessary to get the blood down to your feet. Once it is there, smaller vessels work to deliver oxygen and nutrients to your nerves and take away carbon dioxide. This exchange of oxygen and waste is vital. For it to happen, we need a healthy microvasculature.
WHAT IS MICROVASCULATURE?
Microvasculature contains small blood vessels (arterioles, capillaries, and venules). It is responsible for supplying nutrients and regulating blood flow. When there is a breakdown in the system the effects are far reaching.
HOW HAS TREATMENT CHANGED?
Now there is a new treatment intended to promote healthy microvasculature. It’s a sterile, human tissue allograft which replaces or supplements the damaged microvascular tissue in your body with the hope to prompt it to start producing new cells.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The allograft is made up of microvascular extracellular matrix which contains arterioles, capillaries, and venules. Restoration of microvascular tissue should improve local blood which is necessary for healthy tissue function and to regenerate tissue. Once improved, the body can start the healing process to help repair damaged tissue.
WHAT IS THE GOAL?
We want to get more blood flow to the legs and feet so healing can begin. The goal of this new treatment is to do just that. I believe it is one of the most promising treatments for peripheral neuropathy today.
Neuropathy has too many people sitting on the sidelines. Pain, burning, tingling, numbness, cramping in your legs or feet, or issues with balance make it difficult to get up and get on with everyday living. But there is good news, there’s a new treatment for peripheral neuropathy that may make a difference.

BRITISH COLUMBIAN BEAUTY
Immersive experiences by land and water abound across Vancouver
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTOS BY DESTINATION VANCOUVER
British Columbia, Canada’s westernmost province, makes a very strong case for the west coast truly being the best coast. Bordered by the Alaskan Panhandle, Yukon, and Northwest Territories to the north; by Washington, Idaho, and Montana to the south; by Alberta to the east; and by the Pacific Ocean to the west, one might say it is the jewel in the center of the crown that is the Pacific Northwest. And at nearly 365,000 square miles, there is more to explore in the region than one can do in a lifetime.
Pro tip: start with Vancouver. Just a three-hour flight from the Valley, Vancouver is not only British Columbia’s largest city, but also home to more than half of the entire population of the province. There’s also breathtaking vistas, culinary gems, majestic mountains, a sparkling ocean, rainforests, and fall foliage in nearly every direction.
Outdoor Adventures
Among the city’s most indulgent ways to see the myriad of sights are helicopter journeys, which whisk guests away to alpine glaciers, secluded mountain lakes and pristine vineyards. BC Adventure Company, for example, offers a Backcountry Helicopter and Fraser Valley Wine and Culinary Adventure that soars over (often) snowcapped peaks, backcountry waterfalls, and shimmering lakes before landing near a glacier-fed lake for a glass of Champagne and luxury transportation through Fraser Valley for an alfresco wine and culinary experience. Harbour Air’s Planes and Park aerial adventure is similarly stunning, offering a scenic seaplane flight and visit to Capilano Suspension Bridge Park, a modern marvel set across the thriving coastal rainforest featuring towering platforms and seven suspension bridges as well as a thrilling gravity-defying cantilevered walkway clinging to the granite cliff high above Capilano Canyon. There’s also nature walks across the forest floor.
Looking for another luxe way to explore? Try a yacht. Pacific Yacht Charters offers several private tours, notably one that sails under Lions Bridge past some of Vancouver’s most exquisite waterfront residences. Then, the trip takes guests to Point Atkinson, home of the nationally historic lighthouse originally built in 1874. It also has a journey through Vancouver’s working harbor and local beaches that highlights some of the city’s most popular landmarks including Coal Harbour, English Bay, False Creek, and Kitsilano, with an up close look at the rugged coastline of Stanley Park. Each of the company’s curated private tours can be enhanced with locally sourced sustenance, wine and beer tastings, and more.
Of course, there is fun to be had if willing to put in a little sweat equity as well. Grouse Mountain and Cypress Mountain are
both within a 20-minute drive of downtown Vancouver. The peak of Grouse Mountain offers hiking, lumberjack shows, bird demonstrations, mountain disc golf, grizzly bear and wolf viewing, zip line adventures, and tandem paragliding. The mountain has distinctive culinary experiences in the SkyDeck, The Observatory, and Altitudes Bistro. There are two ways to get to the top: a tram ride or via the Grouse Grind, a 1.8-mile trail up the face of the mountain that is nicknamed “Mother Nature’s Stairmaster.” Cypress Mountain is busiest as the winter rolls in as it is the region’s largest ski resort, but do not sleep on it during the summer and early fall as it also boasts scenic gondola rides, axe throwing, hiking, and geocoaching.
With all of the water encircling the city, it is no wonder that Vancouver is also a kayak, paddleboard, and fishing mecca, especially if seeking charters to watch salmon, trout and halibut. Eager anglers of all experience levels have an array of outfitters from which to choose, including: Bon Chovy Fishing Charters, which hosts guided salmon fishing excursions with an emphasis on conservation and responsible fishing; Sewell’s Marina, specializing in journeys where Chinook salmon are active almost year-round; and Yervana, offering three-hour clinics that teach the basics of how to cast, set hook, and reel in the catch of the day.
Savor & Stay
Vancouver is among the most lauded culinary cities in North America thanks to L’Abattoir, a Gastown restaurant specializing in French-inspired West Coast cuisine. Other best bets include: Botanist, a sustainably sourced seafood lover’s dream with a tasting menu that rivals even the finest in New York; Suyo Modern Peruvian, a Michelin Guide-recommended hot spot that that fuses Chinese, Japanese, Italian, and Spanish cuisines; and Aquafarina, which boasts an Italian-inspired chef’s menu that delights all the senses.
A short ferry ride from downtown, Granville Island is home to over 300 independent businesses ranging from cheese mongers to glass blowers. Given the sheer size, consider a Granville Island Public Market tour, which features small bites across some of the best fresh produce, seafood, and confections in town with a sprinkle of history and fun facts seamlessly weaved in along the way.
Finally, there is the little detail of where to stay. Vancouver boasts two Forbes Travel Guide Five Star award winners in the Fairmont Pacific Rim and Shangri-La Hotel, Vancouver. The sleek Fairmont Pacific Rim is just a block from downtown’s waterfront and features the aforementioned Botanist; the full-service Willow Stream Spa; a bicycle concierge; and Raw Bar, the first 100% Ocean Wise sushi bar in the area. Shangri-La Hotel is tucked into downtown Vancouver’s tallest building and has a chic Asian influence throughout. Inspired by all things Zen, nature, and Indigenous well-being traditions, it is a sanctuary for the soul.

DRINK / CHEERS / CUISINE / FOOD FILES / DINING GUIDE
BY ALISON BAILIN
Feeling a little too hot, hot, hot? All three Mastro’s locations across the Valley – Mastro’s, Mastro’s Ocean Club and Mastro’s City Hall – are helping diners beat the heat in style this summer with their chilled Lobster Cocktail ($45). To make, jumbo lobsters weighing in at about 1 1/4 pounds each are flown in nearly daily from the North Atlantic region before being steamed, chilled, cut, and cleaned each morning prior to service. The process results in 5 to 6 luscious ounces of buttery, slightly sweet meat, arranged in the shell and served in a metal bowl with ample crushed ice. The mouthwatering lobster, garnished with seaweed and caper berries, is complemented by twists on both yellow mustard and Worcestershire sauce-infused cocktail sauce as well as Atomic Horseradish. The dish is also served with a cut lemon. Mastro’s restaurants, www.mastrosrestaurants.com.
EAST MEETS WEST
Hai Noon’s Japanese Moss is an Asian-inspired edible art piece
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS
When James Beard Award-winner Nobuo Fukuda opened the doors of Hai Noon, he intended it to be a celebration of ultramodern Japanese cuisine with truly distinctive global ingredients.
“We don’t even have sushi, to give an idea of how outside-the-box we are going,” says Chris Carr, Hai Noon bar manager. “The cocktail program is an extension of Nobuo’s food, meant to showcase flavor profiles, aromatics and ingredients that can’t be found anywhere else, all taking inspiration from Asia.”
Among the most stunning of the signature offerings is Japanese Moss ($20). The cocktail is built in a large red wine glass with imported Kuramoto Ice and designed to look like an Asian terrarium.
“It starts with black garlic from Nobuo’s kitchen to build a savory umami base,” says Carris, noting the garlic is imported from Japan. “We then add Roku Japanese Gin, chosen for its hint of cherry blossom, as well as a bitter house amaro blend, and a plantbased spirit called Chareau.”
Next, the team emulsifies yuzu, native to Japan, to create a foam. When added to the glass, it is meant to resemble fog against the soil-colored spirits.
“We then add a Kuro Sato, which is a black sugar from Japan, and Turbinado sugar, which has notes of molasses, to add a bit of sweetness,” Carr says.
The drink is garnished with a minty shiso leaf and fennel fronds, which together act as the trees in the metaphoric terrarium. It’s also misted with aromatics from cypress wood to add to the mystique.
“The fragrance – think earthy and woody – hits the guest first,” Carr says. “Then as they enjoy the cocktail itself, there is a sweetness at the front of the palate followed by a long, savory finish with gentle notes of black tea.”

CHEF CONVERSATIONS
In the kitchen with Chris Curtiss of North Italia
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS
Chris Curtiss is the corporate chef and director of culinary research and development at North Italia, where he innovates new dishes as the beloved modern Italian concept continues its nationwide expansion.
So, North Italia is a homegrown brand?
Yes! North first opened in Kierland Commons in 2002 as part of Fox Restaurant Concepts. In the 20-plus years since, we’ve grown to 39 locations across 13 states as well as Washington, D.C. I first joined the brand in 2011 so have had a front-row seat as we’ve cooked our way into a national presence.
What are some must-try new dishes?
Do not miss the Pork Milanese with smoked prosciutto; Tortelloni al Pomodoro with simple tomato sauce, warmed butter, torn basil, and Grana Padano; Heirloom Tomato and Burrata with crispy ciabatta and Calabrian vinaigrette; and the epic Lemon Olive Oil Cake with blueberry compote, lemon curd, and mint.
What inspired you to cook?
As a teen in my native California, I helped set up farmers markets. Part of my compensation was taking home many of the unique ingredients, which my mom and I learned how to cook together. I also worked in a butcher shop in high school before entering college to study psychology and business. But the kitchen kept calling; I left college my senior year to work at a winery, which led me to cooking professionally, and I’ve never looked back.
Tell us about your journey to North.
After working across California under lauded chefs, I made my way to Arizona in 2006 and led a small eatery called Circa 1900 before joining NOCA and then connecting with Sam Fox on North in 2011. I left North to work with Michael Mina – first in Scottsdale at Bourbon Steak then for a project in San Francisco –before coming back to North in 2015.
What would readers be surprised to know about you?
For many years, I have been a proud board member of Phoenix-based One Step Beyond, which provides comprehensive programming and services for adults who have intellectual disabilities.

MAGNIFICENT MAIZE
Sweet yet savory corn dishes that delight
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
Corn has been central to the diets of individuals across the Americas – and especially across the Sonoran Desert – for eons. In season all summer long, here are some inspired twists on the beloved starchy veggie from inventive chefs at Valley eateries.
Charred Corn Ravioli
J&G Steakhouse
Here, expect all of the colors and flavors of summer in one beautiful dish, with charred corn as the star of the show. Imparting a smoky sweetness, local white and yellow corn are roasted and then combined with cream, shallots and rosemary. The aforementioned mixture becomes the filling for the pasta. The ravioli are drizzled with an herbaceous basil fondue of emulsified butter, shallots and basil puree. Organic cherry tomatoes that have been marinated in red wine vinegar and olive oil crown the center of the dish and take it over the top. $16. www.jgsteakhousescottsdale.com.
Roasted Corn Cacio e Pepe
The Rosticceria
A delectable twist on the iconic Italian pasta dish cacio e pepe, which originated in Rome, this side dish steals the show. It boasts tender corn kernels that have been roasted with copious amounts of butter, pepper, and equal parts aged Parmigiano-Reggiano and Pecorino cheeses. Similar to its pasta counterpart, this inventive dish focuses on the simplicity and the quality of its ingredients, and it has creaminess to spare. $5. www.therosticceria.com.
Skillet Cornbread
Roaring Fork
This classic comfort food is known for its delightful array of robust flavors and slightly crumbly yet chewy crust. To make, creamstyle corn and cornmeal are combined with ample green chilies and shredded sharp cheddar cheese before being baked until just barely golden-brown in color. The Southern-meetsSouthwest skillet is served with whipped agave syrup butter. $8. www.roaringfork.com.
Roasted Corn Gordita
The Mission
Sweet yet earthy, each handmade gordita is made from masa, which is a softened ground corn, before being topped with freshly roasted yellow corn, squash, zucchini, and mushrooms. They are finished with huitlacoche crema. Often nicknamed “Mexican truffles,” huitlacoche is a prized fungus that causes corn kernels to swell into blue-gray balls and, when cooked, takes on the distinct flavor profile of a truffle. $12.50 www.themissionaz.com.
Pan Seared Foie Gras
Lon’s at the Hermosa
A symphony of flavors, this tantalizing appetizer is composed of a medley of McClendon’s Select farm-fresh produce from the West Valley. McClendon’s tomatoes are used to create the bright bacon jam, while vibrant, ripe tomatillos serve as the base for the mouthwatering salsa verde. And then there is the corn, which is served two ways: as both corn pudding and housemade cornbread croutons. Together, the buttery goodness of the foie gras, creaminess of the corn pudding, hint of spice from the salsa verde, and the crisp crunch of the cornbread croutons create the perfect bite. $35. www.hermosainn.com.
Elote Flatbread
Match Market & Bar at Found:re Phoenix Hotel
Elote, a Mexican favorite preparation of roasted corn with mayonnaise or aioli, chili powder, cotija cheese, and lime, may sound an odd topping for a flatbread, but it absolutely works! Here, it is paired with mozzarella; pico de gallo; and guajillo sauce, which packs a chili-infused sweet pack of heat. Visually vibrant and stunning first as a feast for the eyes, this dish, garnished with cilantro crema, packs a rainbow of colors and flavors to awaken each of the senses. $16. www.matchphx.com.
The Original Chopped Salad
The Gladly; Citizen Public House; Beginner’s Luck
One of Arizona’s most recognizable dishes, The Original Chopped Salad is presented in bright, bold rows of fresh ingredients, with freeze-dried corn front and center, adding a sweet crunch to the dish’s playful textures. The corn lines up next to marinated tomatoes, trail mix, arugula, couscous, and cold smoked salmon – finished with a buttermilk herb dressing and mixed table side. $18. www.thegladly.com.
Creamed Sweet Corn
Maple & Ash
The fine dining eatery’s take on creamed corn brings together three preparations to accentuate the natural beauty of the starch. First, a corncob stock is made, which is used as a base for a silky corn puree. Next, corn is cooked with garlic and shallots and folded into the puree. Then, whole ears of corn are charred on a wood-fired grill and left to steam in their husks. The corn is then stripped from the cob and folded into the mixture. The dish is finished with roasted poblano peppers, chopped lime,
and grated cotija cheese. It is garnished with espelette pepper, chives and micro cilantro. $15. www.mapleandash.com.
BBQ Grilled Octopus
Hush Public House
Octopus…and corn? The unlikely pair of ingredients are a surprising hit in this gorgeous summer offering. The dish features grilled octopus paired with pickled green tomatoes, a popular summer accoutrement in the Southeast, as well as the unsung hero of the dish: creamy cornbread puree. Since launching, it has been an instant seasonal classic. $22. www.hushpublichouse.com.
Street Corn Empanadas
The Mexicano
For these corn-filled empanadas, flaky pastry dough is filled with roasted sweet corn and creamy queso fresco. After being fried, they are topped with a zesty dusting of chili con limon and a dollop of crema, adding a burst of tangy and savory flavors to each bite. The perfect balance of sweet corn, rich cheese, and a crunchy pastry shell makes these the perfect starter or main dish. $14. www.themexicano.com.
Navajo Corn Chowder
Phil’s Grill at Grayhawk Golf Club
Robust and rustic, creamed roasted corn serves as the base of this soup. The corn is cooked low and slow for hours with yellow onion, roasted peppers, cilantro, salted butter, flour, heavy cream, celery, black pepper, salt, and plenty of cumin, chili powder, and cayenne pepper for added zip. The secret ingredient: just a touch of tomato sauce for a surprising layer of flavor. $9. www.grayhawkgolf.com.

AN APPETIZING HOMAGE
Oliver’s Modern American brings a moody cocktail lounge filled with history to South Scottsdale
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTOS BY KEVIN BROST
When Steve Ellefson opened Fate Brewing Company with partners in 2015, the team had a vision to create an architecturally spectacular space with an aesthetic that could stand up to the award-winning craft beers being created from within its walls. Today, Fate’s Scottsdale outpost is thriving.
“One area where we are always experimenting at Fate is the food as I’ve long wanted to push and elevate the culinary program,” Ellefson says. “In recent years, we set our sights on creating wholly new concepts rather than tinker with patrons’ favorites.”
As a result, earlier this year Ellefson –in partnership with chef Kent Macauley and Clayton Companies – opened the doors to The Eleanor, a midcentury modern breakfast and brunch restaurant housed in a re-imagined 1960s historic building.
“When we purchased The Eleanor space, we also began development on Oliver’s, disassembling and moving a former Polynesian Dairy Queen – the only one in the U.S. – from its original Valley location to its current outpost to create the concept using those unique design elements as the base,” Ellefson says.
Now open in South Scottsdale, Oliver’s is a brooding, moody dinner locale named to honor Ellefson’s 4-year-old son. The leadership team worked with Aline Architecture and Social Design Studio to create a 4,000-square-foot space that both honors the building’s heritage – expect memorabilia dedicated to the original concept as well as several nods to the Ralph Haver design throughout – while standing on its own with a masculine feel, specialty lighting, dark wood details, and a grand bar in the center of the cocktail lounge.
Chef Macaulay – a veteran of Chelsea’s Kitchen and La Grande Orange – offers a rustic, new American menu including a pork tenderloin, a New York strip, and a meatloaf.
The cocktail program features updated classics. Of note are the apricot whiskey sour with Irish whiskey, apricot Luxardo, orange juice, lemon juice, and honey syrup; the smokey old fashioned, smoked tableside, featuring bourbon, bitters, and simple syrup; and the blood orange French 75 with blood orange gin, blood orange simple syrup, and Champagne. There is even a cocktail named to honor the former Dairy Queen. Aptly called The Queen, it boasts vanilla vodka, amaretto, pineapple juice, and grenadine and is served in an original 1960s Dairy Queen tumbler.
“We are also especially proud of our beer program, which features several of Fate’s finest brews as well as Ollie’s Ale, also named for my son and custom-brewed by the Fate team exclusively for Oliver’s. And our wine program offers exceptional vintages by the glass and bottles that won’t break the bank,” Ellefson says.
Oliver’s Modern American is open Sunday through Thursday from 4 to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 4 p.m. to midnight.
