color and care for fine hair
How to
Fine hair has plenty of benefits. It’s quick to dry and style, doesn’t shed as much as thicker hair and looks stunning when bobbed. However, fine hair is also more prone to breakage. That’s why Rodney Gentry at Sachi Studios advises paying particular attention to your hair care routine when you have fine hair. “With fine hair, the strands have a smaller diameter, which means they are more vulnerable to damage. As such, it’s important to care for your hair the right way. Avoid any unnecessary heat treatments and go easy on the amount of product you use, as you’ll simply weight the hair down.” There are plenty of ways in which those with fine hair can add volume. Dry shampoo can work wonders, as can volumizing powder. Curling the hair without heat – by using a curling donut, for example – can also deliver impressive results. It’s important to use shampoos, conditioners and hair masques designed specifically for fine hair, according to Rodney Gentry. “Using products that have been made with fine hair in mind should maximize protection for your hair while also not weighing it down. This becomes even more important when coloring the hair, as coloring can make the hair dryer and thus more prone to breakage.” Rodney Gentry advises using heat protector spray religiously before blow-drying or curling, while also minimizing washing to preserve the intensity of the color for as long as possible. Dry shampoo is a double win in this respect, as it keeps roots from becoming too oily between washes while also adding volume. Fine hair can look incredible when colored and styled professionally. Why not book an appointment Rodney Gentry to find out for yourself? Full-service designer and hair color specialist Rodney Gentry can be reached at Sachi Studios in Scottsdale, AZ. 122 NEW IN TOWN The Vanilla Gorilla
Animal print is always in style. My Sister’s Closet and its family of brands has given over $1 million to the Arizona Humane Society to help save homeless pets last year. Where would you rather consign and shop?
Contents It’s no secret that the real estate market is thriving and tons of people are making the move to Scottsdale and its surrounding areas. There’s so much to love – beautiful trails and sunsets, a growing food and beverage scene, a resortstyle lifestyle, an amazing climate (most of the year), a large arts scene, and some of the best golf courses in the country. The latter (along with the Arizona Coyotes) is what brought Elise Lobb Dzingel – on our cover this month – to the Valley. The golf media personality is most likely recognized from her on-air work with Fox Sports and her growing social media presence. Her husband just signed with the Arizona Coyotes and they are making a home here in town. On page 50, she talks about the origins of her love for golf, how the sport has evolved over the years and what’s on the horizon for her this upcoming year. As for the other parts of why people are headed to town, we’ve got that covered, too. We’re featuring Scottsdale’s Best (page 76), a definitive guide to luxury living showcasing all that the city has to offer – think spas, shopping, fitness studios, resorts, and more. Additional highlights include all the fall things: hearty drinks and dishes (pages 111, 112, and 114), seasonal fashions (pages 88-92), and unique holiday gifts from local businesses (page 72). There’s also a spotlight on The Vanilla Gorilla (page 122), a new restaurant and bar by the owner of Hush Public House to enjoy a great beer, and a profile on local fused glass artist Jacki Cohen (page 74), who is known for her colorful, abstract pieces. As far as what to do this month, check out the annual Canal Convergence (page 59) or enjoy one of the many events happening this month (pages 64-70) – just another reason to love Scottsdale. We are grateful you’re flipping through another month and hope you take time in November to enjoy all that makes Scottsdale truly the best.

DR. HEART AND SOUL Sonal Haerter shares her passion for internal medicine, fashion and food
The health care system is often complex and confusing for patients to navigate alone. That is why having an excellent primary care physician is crucial. Their breadth of knowledge and compassionate care make navigating a convoluted path clearer. For patients of Dr. Sonal Haerter, this is especially true.
Haerter is an internal medicine doctor, otherwise known as an internist. She deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of chronic diseases like diabetes and heart failure. “This field allows me to take care of our seniors – the geriatric population is my favorite patient population,” she says.

Pulse UP CLOSE
From Mentee to Mentor After completing medical school in Kolhapur, India, Haerter moved to Arizona to complete her internal medicine residency at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix where she was mentored by Dr. Jacqueline Olmert. “I was very impressed by [Dr. Olmert’s] compassion, desire to go all out to fight for her patient’s best interests and strong fund of knowledge that made her a brilliant patient advocate,” she says. Haerter is now that model internist to her mentees. In addition to providing clinical care at Dignity Health’s St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, she is an assistant professor in the internal medicine department at the Phoenix campus of Creighton University School of Medicine. “Teacher is by far my favorite [professional] role,” Haerter says. “My medical students and resident trainees are the future of medicine, and it is a privilege to be part of their careers.” She also leads the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) group on campus, where she provides female medical students with the tools and guidance needed for a successful career. From helping them identify their medical specialties to discussing family planning, gender equity and job discrimination, Haerter empowers these women to pull up a seat for themselves at every table. “The group and I also do a different physical activity once a month,” she says. “It is a chance for us to bond outside of class and offer each other advice, support and sisterhood.”
The Importance of Self-Care Physician burnout is a topic Haerter does not shy away from in the classroom and with her AMWA group, as it is a topic close to her heart. Burnout is an epidemic in health care that affects more than 50% of all physicians in the United States. That number rose to 76% in 2020. At least 400 doctors commit suicide each year as a result of physician burnout, another alarming statistic. “I lost one of my close friends and have known several colleagues who unfortunately succumbed to this condition,” Haerter says. “Burnout prevention is a complex topic and not a very easy one to tackle. However, one of my career goals is to help this system change to protect our health care workers.” Not allowing work to trespass on time designated for family and self-care is a burnout prevention strategy that Haerter practices. Plus, with other roles like wife and mom, time to herself is an absolute must. For her, self-care takes the form of self-expression through fashion and writing. Unfortunately, when Haerter attended medical school, fashion wasn’t always accepted, and at times was frowned upon. Throughout her career, she learned not to let this get her down. “What I do in my creative world is up to me, and the clothes I wear are an expression of my creativity and personality,” she says. Today, her students and colleagues compliment her vibrant, edgy and unpredictable style, inspired by her fashion icons Gwen

Stefani, Priyanka Chopra and Victoria Beckham. This recognition prompted her to start sharing her outfit of the day (aka OOTD) without hesitation on Instagram. “The younger generation of doctors want to look a certain way. They are rewriting the story that medicine and fashion cannot go together, which is a welcome change in the industry,” she says. Haerter also experiences self-care when she writes, especially for her blog From My Haert N’ Soul (www.haertnsoul.com), which she launched in March of this year. Readers will find inspirational quotes, snippets of her life, fashion finds, items she loves, recipes, and many more topics that feed her soul. Because Haerter is interested in proper nutrition, her blog recipes lean in a healthier direction while still focusing on flavor. She is currently enrolled in a culinary medicine fellowship at Tulane University to learn more about nutrition, cooking and medicine. “As an internist, my goal is to teach my patients about the power of food as medicine. Once I’m certified, I can discuss evidence-based nutrition [and] provide recipes based on my patients’ health goals to help prevent chronic diseases. This is exciting to me!” Her eye for fashion and nutritious recipes have amassed quite a following on her Instagram and blog. On both platforms, Haerter’s ultimate message to her followers is to be unapologetically themselves. “Be you all the way,” she says. “Whether it is fashion, music, culinary, travel – what is it that restores your soul? Do that regularly. Our hobbies, interests, and creativity are what keeps our passion for life intact.”

Shedding New Light on Toenail Fungus BY GREER BANKS
e all know what it looks like. The nail can become thick, is sometimes deformed, and may separate from the toe and a yellowish, crumbly material can form under it. It can be unsightly, uncomfortable and embarrassing. “This goes beyond just a medical condition,” says Dr. Shah Askari of CIC Foot & Ankle. “Nail fungus can impact your daily living; from the type of shoes you wear to going barefoot to feeling comfortable swimming.” While nail fungus most likely will not cause any other serious health problems, it can be painful and make it difficult to wear certain shoes. In the past, toenail fungus has been a very difficult condition to treat. “The nails on our toes not only provide protection from injury but provide an effective barrier against infection,” says Dr. Askari. He explains, “But once a fungus becomes entrenched, the same barrier that was effective in protecting against infection, now works to protect the fungus. This
makes it difficult to treat because it is hard to reach.” Past treatments include antifungal creams, lotions and nail polish. These topical medications have a low success
“Nail fungus can impact your daily living; from the type of shoes you wear to going barefoot.” rate and can take up to a year to show any improvement in the condition of the nail. “Oral medications are available, but they can put your liver at risk and do not have a high level of success,” says Dr. Askari. “There can be serious side effects from these pills, and blood tests are necessary to monitor your liver
function while you are taking them.” And unfortunately, they may not get rid of the infection. Dr. Askari is very excited about how an FDA approved, low-level laser is helping to treat this pervasive problem. This therapy operates under the principle of photochemistry by enhancing the natural processes of the immune system and impacting the structural integrity of the fungal strain. “It appears that the laser therapy provides a mechanism to effectively treat clinical mycosis, which is the infection,” says Dr. Askari. The laser does not impact healthy tissue and the treatment is painless. “This therapy is an exciting breakthrough for people with infected, painful, thick, or discolored toenails,” says Dr. Askari. His patients have been discouraged in the past, but laser is offering them new hope. Dr. Askari can be reached at (480) 860-6455.

Abbie Boudreau trades delivering the news for creating it with her kids sock company
BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE
Abbie Boudreau pursued a career in the field of journalism to help others. She aspired to be an investigative reporter to seek justice for people who had no voice. “I loved exposing wrongdoing with the hope and expectation that what I uncovered could make positive changes in our community,” says Boudreau, who went on to become a three-time Emmy Award-winning journalist and TEDx Hollywood speaker, After working in different local markets, including a three-year stint at ABC15 News in Phoenix, Boudreau joined CNN’s Special Investigations Unit and made several award-winning investigative documentaries. She then worked with ABC News for a decade, reporting for World News Tonight, Nightline, 20/20, and Good Morning America. “Both CNN and ABC News gave me enormous platforms to tell stories, and I am forever grateful for that,” she says. Boudreau’s pandemic-induced pay cut prompted the seasoned and decorated journalist to retire and turn her side hustle, Sockabu, into the story she wanted to share full time. Sockabu (www.sockabu.com) is a fun-meets-functional sock company for kids of all ages. The no-slip socks are seamless and have a removable flap that uncovers the toes, giving kids the natural and necessary traction they need for playtime or when learning to walk. The idea came to Boudreau after watching her two kids fall and slip one too many times while playing indoors. The socks are also perfect for children who have sensory processing challenges. “My master plan is to make Sockabu a household name,” Boudreau says. “I would also be beyond excited to collaborate with sports teams and children’s brands. Until then, I’m happy to share that we landed our first big deal on Target.com!” Though it may seem like this mompreneur has achieved the perfect home-work balance, she retired the idea of finding a balance between motherhood and operating a business for an important reason: She believes it does more harm than good. Boudreau explains her thoughts further in an article titled How to Achieve an Unbalanced Life (A Must-Read for Recovering Perfectionists) she wrote for the women’s group HeyMama (www.heymama.co).

PLAYDATES BY DESIGN Marina Awerbuch creates a fun, educational environment for local youth
BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE
Marina Awerbuch was worried about what her two small children would lose during the pandemic: community and social activities – critical components to positive youth development. Awerbuch leaned on her extensive experience in program development and child and family therapy to host story times in the park with her kids, Max, 4 1/2, and Sophie, 2. Eventually, other parents saw and wanted in. “Originally, the attendees were my friends, but in summer 2020, as families were ready to expand their circles, more moms saw my play group in the park and asked to join,” she says. What began as story times outdoors inadvertently turned into a business concept to provide parents with resources that enhance their children’s physical and social development. In 2020, Awerbuch offered as much as she safely could to neighborhood kids at the park, including reading books and singing songs in small, distanced groups. In January 2021, when Playdates by Design (www.playdatesbydesign.com) became an official business, she built upon those outdoor activities with literacy-focused classes that enhance early life skills and experiences for children ages 4 to 6 months. Her offerings now include weekly story times, sensory craft play dates, workout sessions, and a new cooking series. “We also offer parent education classes, teacher training, and private event planning services,” Awerbuch says. There are many things on the horizon for Playdates by Design, which is nearing its one-year anniversary. Part of Awerbuch’s plan is to partner with more agencies and businesses that are looking for educational and fun children’s programming. She is also interested in creating a membership service. “[A membership service] would allow parents to order kits to complement my classes, creating a literacy-based bonding experience at home,” she says. Between Playdates by Design and working for a national nonprofit that prevents child abuse in youth-serving organizations, the Toronto native’s hands are always full. Fortunately, her husband helps lighten her load. “He has been my biggest cheerleader and continues to support me as I grow,” Awerbuch says. “He makes all of our family meals, drives the kids to school, and always proofreads what I post. I got lucky.”

Pulse HIS STYLE
DRESSED TO IMPRESS Josh Fink is in the business of making men look and feel their best
BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE
Josh Fink grew up immersed in the clothing industry from a young age. Though originally interested in golf – playing in college and teaching professionally upon graduation – his focus shifted in 2012 when he joined the family business, Nick’s Menswear. His general manager role is a natural fit thanks to his keen eye and ability to connect with customers. “I typically put serious thought into what I’m going to wear because it’s my job,” he says. Fink’s signature look is a pair of stretch chinos with a patterned button-down, a sport coat, a silk pocket square, and a pair of cognac shoes. He often advises customers to get out of their comfort zone and be adventurous with their style, something he practices in his daily life. “Typically, people are blown away when they see the colors and patterns in my closet,” says Fink, who counts polka dots, florals and windowpane his favorite patterns. Though he turns to social media and his uncle and business partner for inspiration, Fink knows a thing or two about trends and creating signature looks. “I’m loving the emergence of technical fabrics in men’s dress garments i.e., stretch. This allows me to go a bit slimmer for guys who may not be a slim build or uncomfortable with dressing up. It’s truly amazing what a little Lycra will do,” he says.
What is your must-have fashion item? My must have is always a sport coat. You can take it off if you’re hot or feel overdressed, but you never know who you’re going to meet or where your day might take you. How has living in Scottsdale influenced your style? Typically, when you go out to dinner or out on the town, people are more dressed up than where I grew up (North Dakota), which allows me to dress up and not feel uncomfortable. Living in Scottsdale has also taught me how to properly dress for different events, whether it be a wedding, holiday party, dinner, or night out at the bars.

PRETTY AND PRACTICAL Cheryl Schaaf is a master of fusing sophistication and comfort
BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY
Cheryl Schaaf defines her personal style as chic with a sense of humor. The board-certified nurse practitioner, who specializes in aesthetics and sexual health at VitalityMDs, is a firm believer that confidence is the best accessory. Schaaf stocks her closet with neutral and dark hues. She occasionally wears a polka dot or houndstooth pattern, but don’t expect to see her in bright colors or loud prints anytime soon. “Unless it’s Halloween you won’t catch me in neon or flashy patterns,” says Schaaf, who doesn’t follow trends but always aims to keep her timeless style fresh. Although her career calls for a daily uniform of scrubs, Schaaf adds a little pizzazz via her Tory Burch tasseled moccasin boots or Michael Kors leopard pumps. “For a night out, my signature look is sophisticated and simple. I love a solid, deep-colored, body-hugging fit with [a] pencil cut and high neckline that accentuates the waist,” she says. As for casual weekend wear, Schaaf typically sports Lululemon, Spiritual Gangster or Vuori on her outdoor mountain adventures. “For a day of leisure, you’ll find me in a fitted but comfortable athleisure outfit with Valentino sandals or Hoka hiking shoes,” she says.
Who influences your style? I admire the style icon Audrey Hepburn synonymous with “a little black dress” and timeless clothes that last a lifetime. I also love Victoria Beckham with her minimal chic approach to work and play. What is your favorite store? I love finding random boutiques on my travels where I find one-of-a-kind items that tend to get the most compliments and come with special memories, like gold leaf sandals from Athens, Greece, white linens from Mykonos, Greece, and snakeskin ankle wrap sandals from Positano, Italy. What is your No. 1 style tip? Be comfortable in your own skin. Anything can look good if you feel good.

Stars Golf media personality Elise Lobb Dzingel makes the move to Scottsdale
PXG golfer and social media influencer Elise Lobb Dzingel has felt at home on the green for as long as she can remember. Born in San Diego, California, and raised in Jacksonville, Florida, Lobb got her first taste of the sport that would become her passion while shadowing her father on the course. “My dad has always been a great golfer – he golfed just about every single day that I can remember,” Lobb says. “As a former naval officer, he’d go away on deployments when I was younger, and when he came back, our bonding time was always on the golf course. I would tag along and ride in the cart with him, which eventually made me fall in love with the game.” Lobb swung her first club when she was 18 months old at a driving range in Monterey, California, and started playing
golf at 2 1/2 years old, marking the beginning of a lifelong love affair with the sport. Fast forward to college, Lobb knew she wanted to keep playing while studying toward a career in sports media. But while she was touring schools that offered her the ability to play, she was presented with an opportunity that would change her life forever – a job co-hosting a golf show on Fox Sports. Though this meant she wouldn’t be able to play collegiate golf – the NCAA rule that allows college athletes to be paid for the use of their name, image and likeness was not in place at the time – Lobb couldn’t turn down the job of her dreams. The proud co-host of Fox Sports’ Swing Clinic considers it the opportunity of a lifetime to help golf lovers improve their game by providing them with curated tips and product reviews.

Golfing the Globe
Over the years, Lobb’s work, including an array of PGA and LPGA events and even the Ladies European Tour in Dubai in 2016, has taken her around the world. “It was definitely a pinch-myself moment to be invited to play in Dubai,” she says. “It was such a beautiful city, and so cool to see the stadium lights on all the courses, because it got so hot there that people would play golf late at night.” Lobb also hosted her first major just a year after playing in Dubai – the 2017 U.S. Open at Erin Hills golf course in Wisconsin. “It’s been incredible to meet some golf legends over the years – I’ve met Gary Player and Arnold Palmer, so now I just need to add Jack Nicklaus,” says Lobb, who earned her degree in sports management and communications from the University of North Florida. “One of my favorite locations, though I might be biased, is TPC Sawgrass in Jacksonville. It’s the course I grew up

around, going to the Players Championship every year, so it was pretty cool to have the opportunity to film a show there.” Though golf has been a part of Lobb’s life from a young age, she’s well aware of some of the stereotypes associated with the game – that it’s a boring or overly formal sport, best suited for the well-to-do and the retired. But Lobb is on a mission to spread the message that golf is open to everyone, regardless of one’s age, background or skill level. “You wouldn’t believe it since my dad is a scratch golfer today, but even he didn’t pick up the game until he was 30! That’s what makes golf so amazing – no matter how young or old you are, you can go out there and play,” she says. “It’s not an old, stuffy game, but constantly growing and evolving.” This chance for constant improvement is one of the reasons Lobb was drawn to it in the first place. “Even in my free time, you’ll likely find me on a course
somewhere. I’m constantly working on my game, because just when you think you have your swing figured out, the next day you’re right back where you started.”
Fit & Focused
Ever since her first trip to Scottsdale in 2017, filming episodes for Swing Clinic and attending Waste Management Phoenix Open for the first time, Lobb has had a soft spot for the Valley. In the following years she made numerous return trips, often with her now-husband Ryan Dzingel, a professional NHL player. The league mandates a fiveday break for all teams in the second half of the season, and most years, the couple chose Scottsdale as their “bye week” destination. And in 2019, surrounded by friends at a picturesque rental in Paradise Valley, Ryan got down on one knee and popped the question.
“Scottsdale has always had a special place in my heart,” says Lobb, who was more than ready to make the move here this summer when Ryan signed with the Arizona Coyotes. “I can’t believe we actually get to call it home now.” Lobb takes advantage of the many golf courses in the Valley to create content for her social media followers – totaling almost a quarter of a million on Instagram alone (find her @eliselobb) – and shares advice, encouragement and news of the latest PXG gear and apparel with her audience. A self-proclaimed health nut, she’s especially fond of sharing fitness content in the form of her favorite putting drills, live workout classes and videos on warmup stretches for shoulder and neck mobility. “I also got my golf fitness certification during COVID, as I wanted to share with others the benefits of taking proper care of your body,” Lobb says. “It’s all about feeling strong and pain-free out on the course.” Her coaching principles are rooted in the importance of feeling capable and confident, skills that Lobb herself mastered in part by participating in pageants as a teenager. “It really helped me learn to be comfortable talking in front of large crowds – and on air.”
Aiming High
Looking forward, Lobb is eager to explore her new home while continuing her work with the Arizona chapter of Best Buddies and, of course, Swing Clinic – keep an eye out for a familiar face on your screens in 2022, as well as some familiar locations, with a few episodes scheduled to be filmed right here in the Valley. And with even more golf-related projects on the horizon, Lobb’s dedication to chasing her dream and never taking no for an answer has definitely paid off – sticking to her maxim, “When opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door,” has provided that little girl who loved golfing with her dad with a platform to make a difference in the world. Another favorite quote of Lobb’s comes courtesy of the late great Bobby Jones, co-founder of the Masters Tournament: “Golf is the closest game to the game we call life. You get bad breaks from good shots; you get good breaks from bad shots – but you have to play the ball where it lies.” So Scottsdale! November ‘21

A PASSION FOR REAL ESTATE LAW Christopher Combs, president of
Combs Law Group, has a deep-seated commitment to his craft
Christopher (Chris) Combs lives and breathes real estate law. After earning a bachelor’s degree in political science from Arizona State University, he studied at the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law, where he penned articles for the Arizona Law Review, a student-run academic legal journal. Combs would go on a medley of different adventures post-law school. And while each was different in its own right, they all focused on his passion for law. For instance, he was a captain in the United States Marine Corps’ Judge Advocate Division, “a distinction reserved for the few who have what it takes mentally, morally and physically,” according to Marines.com. In 1990, he established Combs Law Group, a boutique real estate law firm in the Biltmore neighborhood. Combs and his team of experienced real estate litigators and trusted transactional advisors offer premium legal representation to large companies, small businesses and individuals. From real estate and commercial disputes to disclosure issues to foreclosures and forfeitures and beyond, Combs Law Group specializes in it all. “Real estate law is fascinating to me, and it has so much history. For example, an “X” on a rock was deemed in early English law to be a signature to comply with the statute of frauds.” Combs continues, “Also, the law of adverse possession arose because the King of England wanted land to be used, so
land had higher value with increased tax revenue.” When he isn’t in-office helping clients with their legal needs, Combs leans on his experience as a former Arizona Law Review member and writes. More specifically, he answers the public’s law- and real estate-related questions every Sunday in The Arizona Republic. If you miss his column, don’t fret. Combs archives each question/answer online at www.combslawgroup. com/articles. “Even in law school, I enjoyed the Socratic method of teaching based on questions and answers. I think readers understand legal principles better in that Q&A format,” Combs says. He also enjoys traveling the world to educate others on the Foreign Investment in Real Estate Property Act and other aspects of foreign investment in Arizona real estate. He has given lectures in Asia, Mexico and Canada and has represented foreign investors in the Valley from these countries. Apart from real estate law, Combs is an avid sports fan. Some of his favorite teams include the Phoenix Suns and Pittsburgh Pirates. Combs is a former member of the Pittsburgh Pirates minor league baseball organization, and while he served in the United States Marine Corps, he was on the All-Marine Corps basketball team. COMPASSIONATE AND DOWN TO EARTH Deanna F. Longtin
Deanna F. Longtin of Longtin Law Office is not your typical attorney thanks to her approachability and understanding of human nature. With more than a decade of experience practicing law under her belt, Deanna has a soft spot for cases that many others won’t touch. “I advocate for victims of domestic violence and domestic abuse. Not everyone is cut out for that area of work, however, I willingly jump into that arena to defend someone I believe has been wrongfully accused or on the flip side to advocate for someone who needs help finding their voice,” she says. After earning her law degree at the age of 36, Deanna’s legal career began in North Dakota in a town of 1,200 people. She was known in the tri-county area as the “lady lawyer on Main Street” which brought her a multitude of legal opportunities. “I was one of the first court appointed mediators in North Dakota and involved in the pilot project that the state had implemented. Since that time, I have conducted or been involved in over 400 mediations. And I love every minute of it!” she shares. Today, Deanna is focused on her Scottsdale location with a concentration on family law, mediation, and domestic disputes. She brings a great deal to the table with her knowledge of different areas of law and business experience, which helps her clients and mediations be more successful. Her background in criminal defense also gives her a unique perspective about cases involving domestic violence, and not always a popular one. “I will defend a man against a protection order if I
believe he has been wrongfully accused,” Deanna says. “Most people don’t realize that a domestic violence protection order can destroy a person’s life.” Family is important to Deanna and she is dedicated to fighting for families that need a voice. Whether it’s mediating during divorce or child custody cases or personal issues such as parent-teen disputes, she has a passion for the process and loves watching the participants see the light and actually hear the other party or feel heard. Compassion, empathy, and understanding is what Longtin Law Office is built upon. “I understand how small issues can really impact a person’s life. A two-minute phone call can make or break a weekend or holiday and I try to be there as much as possible to answer those questions and deal with issues immediately,” Deanna says. Along with growing her practice, Deanna will continue to focus on DaEA, her workshops for Domestic abuse Education and Awareness. “DaEA has an emphasis on educating men to identify an unhealthy relationship and to be aware of when other men are victims of mental/emotional abuse, while teaching them what to do to get out of it, and teaching women to identify abusers or unhealthy relationships by working on themselves,” she shares. AN EVENING WITH HEART Phoenix Heart Ball returns for its 62nd year
BY MEGAN DEMKO AND GABY LEIGHTON
IF YOU GO… What: Phoenix Heart Ball When: Nov. 20, 6:30 p.m. Where: The Phoenician, 6000 E. Camelback Road, Scottsdale Tickets: $1,000 Information: www. heart.org.
Valley residents will once again don their elegant black-tie styles and head to The Phoenician, A Luxury Collection Resort, on Nov. 20 for Phoenix Heart Ball. The 62nd annual gala will benefit American Heart Association’s (AHA) mission to help individuals battling heart disease by promoting the continuation of research and supporting current patients undergoing the trauma of heart disease. “Our hope is that guests truly enjoy themselves,” says Jennifer Moser, chairman of this year’s Heart Ball. “After the last year and a half, I know everyone is excited to get back to ‘normal’ and have an evening out with their partner, their friends and their colleagues in celebration of a great cause that saves so many lives.” As one of the oldest and largest nonprofit volunteer organizations in the United

States, AHA has been fighting instances of heart disease and stroke for over a century. Since its inception, Heart Ball has collected over $40 million to support the study and prevention of cardiovascular disease. “The Phoenix Heart Ball is the Valley's longest running gala, originally founded by Mrs. Barry Goldwater who chaired the first Heart Ball in 1959,” she says. " It has since become the longest running and most prestigious annual charitable activity in the Valley.” The theme for this year’s event will be Remembering Hearts: Past, Present, Future. “Having lost my own father to heart disease, this cause is very close to my heart and I wanted to be sure that this
year's ball honored those we lost in the past while also raising awareness to take care of ourselves in the present as well as teaching future generations about the importance of heart health,” Moser says. In usual fashion, attendees can expect a lavish affair, complete with a cocktail hour, photos, dinner, dancing, live music and entertainment, and an after party. “This year's ball will be different in that each year follows the theme, colors and vision of that particular chairman. Since we did not have the ball last year, we are including two years of fundraising and celebration in one,” Moser says. “Guests can expect to see a ravishing room full of unique decor, an eye-popping dessert, new entertainment for cocktail hour, and some truly amazing attire in the color themes of red, cobalt blue and fuchsia”

CLAE Handcrafted using Polymer clay, CLAE debuted in 2020 and has been popular with local fashionistas ever since. The extremely lightweight and versatile earrings are easy to wear all day and come in a neutral palate, ensuring the wearer can fit them in with any outfit. Options include both studs and dangle earrings, ranging from cheetah and cow prints to muted pops of color. There’s a wide variety of shapes, including cactus, Aztec, arches, rainbows and more. www.claeaz.com. Simple Mama Company Owner Hannah Graham started Simple Mama with the idea of helping moms on the go (though you don’t have to be a mom to love these products!) get organized through fun, vibrant bags with patterns inspired by her Arizona roots. From totes and fanny packs to zippered bags of all sizes, each bag is hand sewn locally. In addition to the brand’s signature cactus print, there’s also avocado, prickly pear, fruit, floral and seasonal varieties. As an added bonus, the brand donates 2% of all product sales to Hope Women's Center and Operation Underground Railroad each month. www.simplemamaco.com. Kit & Sparrow Blending art and science, Kit & Sparrow crafts unique, from-scratch soaps with an element of fun. The small-batch milk soaps – made by hand in Scottsdale – are filled with natural ingredients and cured for six weeks to ensure a gentle, creamy, and moisturizing bar. Using fresh goat milk from a local urban farm, the family business focuses on unique scents, creative designs (check out the metallic swirled bar and carved out designs!), and gentle ingredients. Popular fall scents include cranberry orange, pumpkin spice yogurt, and spiced apple cider. www.kitandsparrow.com. Painted Ladies What started out as a small family business 12 years ago has since tuned into one of the most recognized home decor styles in Arizona. The Ballard family’s hand-painted pieces are inspired by their native Arizona roots and often feature cactus art and reclaimed wood. The custom, hand-painted pet portraits can make a unique, beautiful gift for any pet lover. In addition to pet portraits, popular items include wood state cutouts, birdhouses, and desert decor. www.thepaintedladies.org. Lace, Grace & Peonies Established in 2017, this local company utilizes tumbled marble coasters from Turkey to create beautiful yet functional conversation pieces for any room in the house. They also make for great hostess, baby shower and wedding gifts. The coasters are hand-stamped, hand-painted and sealed using the owner’s secret method, which creates a matte finish that protects the art. The brand offers over 600 designs and popular collections include those for pet lovers, foodies, car collectors, and sports enthusiasts. www.lacegraceandpeonies.com.

Jacki Cohen brings people joy through her colorful fused glass art
BY GABBY LEIGHTON
Artist Jacki Cohen’s love for art is deeply rooted in what she finds beautiful. Her fascination began like most children – coloring and countless arts and crafts through her high school years. Her love for the visual world continued after she graduated from Arizona State University with a marketing degree and worked as a buyer for a major department store. “I was good at being able to visualize collections just by seeing small swatches of fabrics,” Cohen says. “That artistic aptitude helped me merchandise and buy collections because I could imagine how the colors and fabrics would look and flow on the racks, in displays, and how they would appeal to customers.” Cohen was a glass art admirer, collector and enthusiast for many years. However, it wasn’t until her oldest child was headed for college that she considered a second act as a professional artist. “Sixteen years ago, I embarked on a journey to explore my creative side. I took classes in watercolor, drawing, ceramics, and nothing felt quite right,” Cohen says, noting she took a stained glass course through a local community college and learned how to handle glass. “The studio offered a fused glass class. I knew right then and there I had found my artistic medium.” Cohen was a hobbyist at first, but monthly classes quickly progressed into weekly and then biweekly classes for many years. She began selling her work professionally in 2009 and built and opened her own studio, Jacki Cohen Glass Art Designs (www. jackicohenglassartdesigns.com), in 2014. Since then, she has continued to learn new techniques through art classes, webinars, books, podcasts and by following other artists on social media. “I’m relentlessly curious and I continually learn I am always pushing my artistic boundaries to discover new glass techniques and bring new art to my customers,” she says. “I learn a lot from trial and error. Sometimes a project that doesn’t work teaches you more than 100 successes.” Cohen’s work showcases bright colors, abstract designs, unique shapes and black-and-white accents. She specializes in custom commissioned pieces and has a large selection of Judaica. Her current work is inspired by the joy of life after her mother’s near-death COVID-19 diagnosis. “The first piece of art I created after not working for more than two months, after taking care of my mom, was Celebration, Tree of Life,” she says. “The intricacy of design, layers, and textures illustrate my exuberance for life, and that energy is expressed in this collection.” Cohen will be participating in the upcoming self-guided 25th annual Hidden in the Hills Studio Tour (www.sonoranartsleague. org), which will take place in the Sonoran Foothills on Nov. 19, 20, 21, 26, 27, and 28. Her work will be on display at The Wes Hartin Art Studio.

Permanent Make-up
& BEYOND Microblading
BEYOND MICROBLADING As a permanent make up technician and trainer for nearly 30 years I’ve seen many trends come and go. These days one of the first things I hear from people inquiring about services is “I don’t want tattooed eyebrows. I want the soft powdery look that you did for my friend.” This is when I educate the public on the truth about permanent make up and the truth is it’s all tattoo. Years ago when permanent make up was just a fledgling industry in this country many of us worked in the offices of plastic surgeons. We called the procedure micro pigment implantation. Then different techniques were marketed using trade words like soft tap, and recently microblading has been all the rage. Known as the “queen of conservative” My specialty is custom blending colors for each person. Shape, color, technique and science are what create the artistry for beautifully natural eyebrows. Eyelash enhancements. Due to the lockdown most people have lost their eyelash extensions. This is the perfect time to touch up permanent eyeliner before reapplying lashes. I love to create a rich smokey looking lash line rather than a harsh eyeliner look. Safety first. Due to the intimate nature of these procedures safety has always been at the very top of the list. Hospital grade disinfectants are used on surfaces between clients and most importantly all instruments are new, sterile and disposable. Yea! With your safety in mind I will be wearing a mask through your procedure and if you like I will happily provide you with one as well. Because my studio is completely private you need not worry about ever encountering a crowded salon environment.

2021 MCLAREN GT The strikingly luxurious grand touring supercar BY JIM PRUETER
VITAL STATS 2021 McLaren GT Base price: $210,000
The legendary McLaren supercars started with Bruce McLaren, the famous Formula One race car designer, driver, engineer, and inventor from New Zealand. He was also one of the most successful in his field, with wins in Monaco, the Indianapolis 500, and 12 World Drivers’ Championships. Today, his name lives on in a lineup of street-going supercars adorned with the McLaren name, a brand that’s a dream for driving enthusiasts worldwide. Last year, McLaren introduced the GT, the most luxurious grand touring car the brand has ever produced. It’s not a supercar or sports car with a rough ride and loud exhaust, rather it fills a large hole in McLaren’s product lineup. Appearance-wise it doesn’t look like a luxury touring car, and – with a massive 612-horsepower twin-turbo V-8 and twin-clutch gearbox, capable of going from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.1 seconds, a top speed of 203 mph, and a two-seat layout – isn’t the usual for a luxury tourer. Still, the folks at McLaren insist that it is, especially pointing out the luxurious interior, a

suspension that’s been tuned for a more compliant ride and styling that’s a lot less aggressive than the McLaren 720S that it’s based on. From the back, the GT has a surprising amount of cargo room under the glassy rear hatch with enough space for golf clubs, two sets of skis and a duffel bag. There’s even additional cargo room under the front hood. The cabin trim is eye candy, replete with gorgeous materials and a handcrafted switchgear. Everything looks and feels expensive and uniquely McLaren – the GT even stays with the dramatic McLaren wing doors that softly power close. The auto is incredibly agile, with flat cornering void of understeer. The entire car holds itself in perfect balance with minimal agitation from bumps and dips or changes in tire grip. A beautiful sonnet of expressive automotive rhythm arranged to the delight of legendary driving perfection makes the GT different from other supercars. It’s not just about prodigious speed, rather the luxury and perfect balance seldom found in anything else.

COMO Hotels and Resorts helps guests make meaningful memories through curated experiences
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
Across its portfolio, COMO Hotels and Resorts – a collection of 15 luxury properties around the globe – has developed a collection of restorative and meaningful experiences with a focus on adventure, holistic wellness and award-winning cuisine. COMO Maalifushi, the only resort on the Thaa Atoll in the Maldives, is surrounded by calm lagoons, uninhabited islands and pristine reefs. As such, an immersive nature program is available at the property, which offers oceanfront suites with sea-fed pools outside guests’ doors and a palm tree-lined cabana spa that feels like it is out of movie, featuring extensive snorkel and scuba diving opportunities. There are ample fishing programs, including the chance to tackle on the inner atoll to pick up titan triggerfish, giant trevally and red snapper, as well as longer adventures at sea on custom outfitted fishing boats, allowing for the opportunity to catch (and release, as it’s the law in the region) massive bonefish, yellow marlin, sailfish, mahimahi, and yellowfin tuna. The resort also offers an excursion to go shark spotting and to swim with

whale sharks alongside a marine biologist. The whale shark experience is available at night so guests can see the majestic, gentle giants feed in their natural habitat, a truly bucket list adventure unavailable almost anywhere else in the world. Similarly, COMO Parrot Cay, located along the Caribbean Sea on the private island of Parrot Cay in Turks & Caicos, serves as a wellness and eco retreat. The property features wellness weeks throughout the year, where a fitness consultant will work with each guest on a multiday journey to improve health and sleep, and aid in stress reduction, weight loss and more. There are also Pilates and yoga programs, meditation, signature body therapies, cycling adventures and other outdoor active experiences available year-round. Another highlight is a comprehensive eco excursion to the vibrant island of North Caicos, which is only a few minutes by boat from the resort. Nicknamed the “green island” due to its abundance of plants and very little development, the private visit allows guests to explore the historical and carefully preserved Wade’s Green Plantation, experience the local animal and fruit farms and learn about the Caicos Pine Tree Recovery Project. Guests can also head down to the coast to explore the remote beaches, bird ponds and bountiful nature preserves in the area. Each property has developed its own niche like the aforementioned offerings, as well as signature weeks each year for specialized programming. New properties set to join the collection in 2022 are being planned with the same connected, authentic experiences. Notably, in 2022 COMO will open a resort in the breathtaking Puligny-Montrachet region of Burgundy, France. This hotel, COMO Le Montrachet, will specialize in unparalleled access to some of the most famous vineyards in the area as well as exquisite culinary offerings. Learn more at www.comohotels.com.

Laura Ingram has a winning team The weather may be cooling down but the Arizona Cardinals are hot, hot, hot! And Arizona’s professional sports teams aren’t the only thing flourishing in Arizona. With more corporations and jobs moving in to our beautiful state, the local economy is flourishing and that includes the real estate market. Contrary to current reporting, we are continuing to see an elevated buyer demand in all markets. Buyers have even taken drastic steps that include waiving inspections and offering way above the asking price just to move in. If you are thinking of selling your home, the time is now! Monthly median sales prices are up 24.6% and should the market follow typical historical trends, we anticipate an influx of inventory in the luxury market segment this fall. Just like the Cardinals have captured their fans attention, home sellers are in a great position to capitalize on buyers’ interest and stay
ahead of the wave. In the months ahead we should see a steady climb of inventory in luxury market of over $1M.
So, how can you ensure your listing stands out? Team up with the agent and broker that has the expertise to meet your needs and gives you an unsurpassed overall experience from contract to closing. Beautiful beaches, Mayan monuments and awe-inspiring cenotes await in Playa del Carmen
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
While journeying through Central America in what is now Mexico around approximately 600 B.C., Mayas discovered a jungle along the Pacific Ocean, rich with life on both the land and in the sea. That oceanfront paradise, where Mayas famously settled more than 2,600 years ago followed by the Spanish far later, is called Playa del Carmen. Located about an hour south of the Cancun International Airport, servicing daily flights from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, the modern Playa del Carmen is an homage to its ancestral roots, a bustling city with vibrant nightlife, and a master class in oceanfront luxury and outdoor adventure.

Much of the activity in the actual city takes place along Quinta Avenida. More or less the region’s Main Street, it runs parallel to the shore and serves as the primary pedestrian walkway for visitors to the city. Lively both day and night, there are street performers, musicians, vendors and souvenir shops. There’s also a variety of restaurants and bars up and down the street, notably La Fisheria, which is helmed by famed Mexican chef Aquiles Chávez Jiménez; Club de la Cerveza, boasting the largest selection of craft Mexican and American beers in the region; and Chez Céline, which excels at steak and pasta. There are a host of resorts just a short walk from Quinta Avenida from which to choose. Among the most lauded is Playacar Palace, which completed a $14 million phased renovation in recent years. The AAA Four Diamond all-inclusive, family-friendly property features a contemporary yet classic design and rests on a powdery, white sand beach. State-of-the-art wristbands allow guests to open the doors to their suites, and many of the 200 rooms and suites have private terraces, wet bars and/or epic ocean views as well as premium liquor dispensers, a fully stocked minifridge and copious spa amenities including CHI products. Resort dining is of particular note, especially Cafe del Mar, the resort’s signature eatery boasting artful plating and fresh local shellfish and seafood. There are also stunning Italian and Asian restaurants – Bocelli and Momo, respectively – on property in addition to three lavish bars and lounges, including one on a rooftop with views for miles in every direction. Playacar also features activities, serene and kid-friendly pools overlooking the ocean, tennis courts, a childrens playroom, hydro bikes, indoor and outdoor games, and daily entertainment including live music and professional mariachis. There’s also the
award-winning Awe Spa, which has more than a dozen treatments as well as a complimentary hydrotherapy circuit for all adult guests to use. The journey begins in the oil-infused sauna, followed by a light misting and a full-body shower. Guests are then able to reap the detoxifying properties of the starlit steam room before visiting the pore-perfecting ice room. Finally, guests may relax for as long as they wish in a series of hydrotherapy pools with hot, cold and pressure therapy.
Adventure Bound Given the exhaustive list of excursions in the immediate area, Playacar also has a large staff of full-time concierge professionals who can design custom itineraries and tours to explore the region’s famed adventure parks as well as the cenotes and Mayan Ruins. Among the most popular excursions are snorkeling through Yal Ku Lagoon in nearby Akumal, translating from Mayan to English as “Place of the Turtle;” experiencing a day on a fully stocked and expertly led luxury catamaran bound for Isla Mujeres; an ultra-active Riviera Maya all-terrain vehicle adventure where guests steer a powerful Can-Am Outlander Max XT 450 through an exciting jungle route; and a full-day tour of Mayan ruins. A bucket list item for many, the Mayan tour leaves from the resort and is by reservation only. It takes guests to Chichen Itza, one of the largest and most culturally rich Mayan cities. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in1988, its iconic pyramid, El Castillo de Kukulcán, and the Juego de Pelota (“ballgame”) are some of the most significant structures preserved there to this day. Xcaret Park, a miles-long water park, theme park, amusement park and eco-archaeological site all in one is another option, and just about 15 minutes from Playacar. It features more than 50 natural and cultural tours of the region as well as on-site attractions, including snorkeling, underground exploration rivers, beaches, a lagoon, an aquarium, a sea turtle center, stingray encounters, canopy tours, a Mexican folk art museum, a butterfly garden, and the chance to swim with nurse sharks. There are even animal sanctuaries with jaguars, manatees, flamingos, spider monkeys, bats, deer, and tapirs. On-site, Xcaret also offers a daily showcase of Mexican culture called Xcaret Mexico Espectacular. During the program, among other things, there is an equestrian show; a demonstration of Mayan dances; and a Papantla Flyers ceremony, a pre-Hispanic tradition used to invoke water. Finally, Xcaret is able to book one of the most popular offsite tours in the region in its famous La Ruta de los Cenotes experience. There are four types of naturally occurring cenotes in the world, which are pools of fresh water that appear as if from nowhere thanks to underground rivers. This is the only tour in the region to take guests to one of each, and in the heart of the lush Mayan jungle. Playa del Carmen is a land of history, mystery and majesty. OPPOSITES ATTRACT Unlikely ingredients come together for sensational tastes
What you learned in science class may come in handy when ordering a cocktail. Mixologists are taking the opposites attract concept and applying it to create imaginative concoctions. Here are some local options marrying seemingly opposing ingredients, resulting in the perfect sip.
BUELAH Nook Kitchen Parsley, pepper and ginger seem like an unlikely trio. However, this mix of peppery single barrel rye whiskey tempered with bitter amaro, parsley, and basil-infused herbal liqueur finished with ginger-infused honey works in harmony. $15. www.nookkitchen.com. GRAPEFRUIT MOJITO The Ainsworth This twist on the standard mojito contains Captain Morgan Grapefruit Rum and freshly squeezed grapefruit juice to juxtapose the traditional mint component, resulting in a terrifically tangy taste. $14. www. theainsworthphx.com. GATO EN FUEGO The Plaza Bar The unexpected combination of a chai mixture bursting with cardamom and cloves, sweet vermouth and Ancho Reyes Chile Liqueur serves as the base of this luxe libation. Famous 48 Local Kitchen & Bar offers American comfort classics with a nod to seasonal Arizonan ingredients. To celebrate apple season across the state, Famous 48 added a Bourbon Apple Crumble ($10.95) to its dessert menu. The filling is crafted from scratch using frozen apples, butter, vanilla, sugar, brown sugar, baking powder, salt, and lemon juice, which are all added to a saucepan and cooked to a caramel-like consistency. While the filling cools, the crumble dough is made with flour, salt, vanilla, sugar, granola and room temperature butter. Both the filling and crumble are then layered in a pan and baked before being plated in an individual skillet topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and drizzle of caramel sauce. The balanced sweetness and crunchy crumb will have you feeling thankful you saved room for this seasonal treat. Famous 48, 8989 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.361.4933; www.famous48.com. Starlite BBQ uses its own special sauce to flip the script on cocktail convention
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS
Since opening in 2017, Starlite BBQ and Whiskey Bar has become known for its smoked meats and expansive whiskey collection. “We have more than 120 whiskies from which to choose as well as a cocktail menu that showcases variations of the spirit quite prominently,” says Brad Twigg, co-owner and general manager of Starlite. There are none, however, more on the nose for a barbeque spot than Ribs and Rye ($13), a twist on an Old-Fashioned. The cocktail starts with Rittenhouse Straight Rye Whisky, a San Francisco World Spirits Competition double gold medal winner known for its rich notes of citrus, cinnamon and vanilla as well as lingering maple-infused spiciness. “A traditional [Old-Fashioned] has sugar, bitters and whiskey then a garnishment of citrus,” Twigg says. “For the sweetness, we add demerara syrup, which has an earthy caramel flavor, and then for the bitters, we opt for mole, which tastes like Mexican chocolate and chiles.” Then things get really interesting. First, Twigg adds Bauchant Orange Liqueur to ramp up the citrus notes. Then, he drizzles in a touch of housemade Stalite barbeque sauce. “It may sound odd, but the sweet and spicy elements in our sauce really complement each of the spirits as well as the syrup in a way you would not expect,” Twigg says. With all the elements in the shaker, Twigg adds ice then stirs the contents before double straining them into a bucket glass with one large ice cube. “We finish it with an orange peel as well as one freshly barbequed baby back pork rib so guests can nibble while they sip, whetting their palate for the meal to come,” Twigg says. As the executive chef of Jocque Concepts, Hector Cruz oversees all culinary operations for Diego Pops, The Montauk, The Hot Chick, and Eat Up Drive In.

What does Jocque mean? Jocque is the last name of Caitlin and Ryan, our local owners. Fun fact: In addition to the concepts they currently own, they founded Original ChopShop, American Junkie and a handful of other concepts. What inspired you to cook? My father owned a popular Cuban restaurant in Mexico City where I was born and raised. While I initially wanted to be an economist, the cooking bug was unavoidable by the time I was a teenager. How did you get your start cooking professionally? I moved to Phoenix at age 17 and graduated from Paradise Valley High School in 2004. While attending Paradise Valley Community College, I started working as a line cook at Barcelona, a then-popular nightclub. Inspired in that kitchen, I enrolled in Scottsdale Community College’s culinary program and then moved over to work with the Jocques at American Junkie in 2008. Tell us about your culinary journey with the brand. Over the past 12 years, I expanded the American Junkie concept across Mexico and California, moving to California for a spell to ensure its success. I also worked on the opening team for Original ChopShop and developed all of the culinary visions for our current brands. What is the inspiration behind each of your current concepts? Diego Pops’ menu showcases cuisine from Mexico’s Yucatan and is inspired by Ryan and Caitlin’s travels. Similarly, The Montauk was inspired by their trips to the Hamptons and is very much a seafood vibe. The Hot Chick was born of our shared love for fried chicken. And finally, Eat Up was born out of COVID-19 and diners’ need for quality grab-and-go options. What would readers be surprised to know about you? I am such an avid gardener – currently growing 10 types of chiles, tomatoes and dozens of herbs – that it has overtaken my entire backyard. www.diegopops.com; www.themontaukaz.com; www.thehotchickaz.com; www.eatupdrivein. com.

Elote Pizza
Picazzo’s Healthy Italian Kitchen A combination of Mexican and Italian staples, this pizza – available with a standard, gluten-free, vegan, or cauliflower crust base – is brushed with a butter garlic sauce and topped with traditional mozzarella. Elote, or Mexican street corn is then added, as well as red onions, herbed Parmesan cheese, spicy chipotle sauce, and a sprinkle of fresh cilantro. $20. www.picazzos.com.
Chicken Fried Lobster Tails
Dominick’s Steakhouse, Steak 44 and Ocean 44 A fusion of the American South and its seafood-loving neighbors up North, this dish is a playful twist on chicken-fried steak that substitutes the main protein for fresh Maine lobster and some of the traditional salt used in the dish with Chesapeake Bay seasoning. Bonus: To give a little love to the Southwest, the dipping sauce is an aioli made from green chiles native to the Sonoran Desert. $42. www.ocean44. com.
Disco Fries
Little Rituals Get the party started with this cheesy delight, which has a base of fries, brisket and ample cheddar. The dish is then sprinkled with the flavors of Northern Italy thanks to a literal sprinkling of crispy specks – or cured Italian ham – followed by south of the border-inspired pickled chiles and Sriracha sauce aioli. There is also nod to the best in Vietnamese street food, thanks to a final topping of pho gravy. $19. www.littleritualsbar.com.
Toro Carpaccio
Sushi Roku Enjoy this Japanese-meets-Russian twist on traditional carpaccio – interestingly first introduced as a delicacy in Italy. The decadent fusion starts with thin slices of raw toro, the fattiest part of a tuna’s belly. Each slice is lightly dressed with truffle-infused soy sauce and then dabbed with spicy kizami, which is freshly chopped wasabi marinated in soy. The Russian twist: The dish is finished with premium Russian Oscietra caviar. $46. www.sushiroku.com.
Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls The best fusion not only combines core elements of culinary traditions that originate from different countries, regions or cultures; it also celebrates and elevates them while piquing diners’ curiosity. Enjoy these blended creations from local restaurants.
Chauncey Social A Chinese take on a Philadelphia classic, this shareable starter begins with thinly sliced steak, caramelized onions and cheese, the core elements of a classic Philly cheesesteak. The contents are wrapped in a handmade egg roll dough and fried until golden brown and crispy. The rolls are served with a side of spicy Calabrian chile aioli, which mixes Southwestern flavors with the spiciness Chinese food is known for. $14. www.chaunceysocial.com.

Korean Fried Chicken Taco
CRUjiente Tacos Fried chicken was first introduced to Korea when the American military was stationed in the country during the Korean War. Known for its crunchy exterior, thick sweet-and-spicy sauce and juicy meat, at Cru it is transformed into a Mexican taco with Korean-inspired gochujang sauce, compressed cabbage, pickled jalapeno, and an olive oil garlic sauce called mojo de cebollin. $8.50. www.crutacos.com.
Chifa Style Fried Rice
Toro Latin Restaurant & Rum Bar This twist between Cantonese and Peruvian comfort dishes, which was first made popular in Lima’s Chinatown in Peru, is the fanciest version of fried rice in town. The standard fried rice ingredients – including ginger, soy sauce, rice, Asian vegetables, and cooked eggs – are joined by chorizo, chicken, shrimp, and pork carnitas. $24. www.scottsdaleprincess.com.
Ling’s Meatloaf menu offerings, usually consists of fries with mussels in a bowl of white wine, shallots, garlic, and butter. At Onyx, the white wine broth is traded for Thai-style curry and coconut cream. The fries are cut by hand and topped with chorizo and Mexicali green sauce. The cultures of three regions come together here for a truly unexpected – but very welcome – twist on the classic. $24. www.fourseasonsscottsdale.com.
Ling & Louie’s Asian Bar and Grill The ultimate American comfort food turns into high-end fusion thanks to the addition of savory red wine mushroom gravy made using Japanese stock called dashi, pinot noir, soy sauce, and mushrooms. The East-meets-West offering is paired with creamy wasabi mashed potatoes and Sichuan green beans. $16. www. lingandlouies.com.

Buffalo Chicken Chicharrones
ZuZu at Hotel Valley Ho This crispy, spicy dish marries chicharrons, which are Mexican-style rinds, with an elevated take on the American buffalo chicken recipe. First, the rinds, most commonly made with pork, are made with chicken. Then, the housemade buffalo sauce is made by combining garlic, shallots, and dried chiles that have been lightly fried in oil and seasoned with vinegar. The dish also features a vinegary vegetable salad, much like a Spanish escabeche, with pickled carrots, onions and jalapenos that have been charred over an open flame. $11. www.hotelvalleyho. com.
Not-cho Bene
Hash Kitchen Eggs Benedict was first developed in New York City and is typically made with toasted English muffins, ham or Canadian bacon, and a poached egg covered in a rich hollandaise sauce. Here, the American breakfast staple gets a Mexican twist as the traditional poached eggs are joined by toasty corn tortilla chips, warm nacho cheddar cheese, crispy crumbled

BEER ME
The Vanilla Gorilla roars into North Scottsdale
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
When famed local chef Dom Ruggiero opened Hush Public House in 2019, he took the culinary community by storm. “Like everyone else, we had to temporarily close our doors in 2020 amid COVID-19,” says Ruggiero, noting Hush was closed for about six months. “During that time, the space next door became available, and I started thinking about what we might be able to do with it, wanting to create something very different from Hush that paid homage to something we all loved: great beer.” Now open next door to Hush, The Vanilla Gorilla – which some may find reminiscent of the monikers of some of the best beer sports in the Valley, including The Wandering Tortoise, Whining Pig and Sleepy Whale – was inspired by an Urban Dictionary term that reminded Ruggiero of himself and was ultimately chosen because its quirky nature. The 2,500-square-foot beer and bottle shop is big, bold and vibrant in both its look and vibe. With

20-foot ceilings, flat-screen TVs throughout and an open floor plan, it is hard to believe the concept came from the same minds that created the dimly lit, intimate, modern American culinary experience next door. “We are like onions – we have layers,” Ruggiero says. The venue, equipped with board games aplenty, seats 70 guests, including 12 at the bar. There are 24 taps as well as nearly 100 bottle options, including the team’s local favorites from Wren House, Arizona Wilderness Brewing, Huss Brewing, Tombstone Brewing Company, Shop Beer Co., and more. “We also have a wide selection of our favorite brands from across the West Coast, notably Belching Beaver, Modern Times and Harland Brewing,” Ruggiero says. “And for those who prefer wine by the glass or bottle, hard cider, seltzers, mead, or even soft drinks, we have you covered as well.” Visually, the space is radical. Behind the bar, there is a mural of a gorilla wearing sunglasses, which show a reflection of a pop art-inspired take on an Arizona sunset. On the facing wall, there is a 30-by-20-foot mural of an Arizona sunset painted by local artist Geremy Cites. The food is funky, too. On display behind the bar is a hot dog roller, which serves up craft hot dogs imported from Frippers in Atlanta. Beyond that, there are bar snacks, including bar nuts and cured olives, as well as elevated pub bites ranging from French onion dip to beer cheese with hard pretzels. The Vanilla Gorilla is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to midnight and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Happy hour is offered weekdays from open until 6 p.m. with $2 off pints of beer and wine by the glass.
