What exactly is male pattern baldness? Can women experience it too? What are the different treatments for the various types of hair loss? Carly Klein, founder of National Hair Loss, answers all our questions about the types of hair loss and the personalized programs and treatments that her team offers to suit every patient’s hair loss needs.
Q: What treatments do you offer patients with Alopecia Areata? CK: It is important to see a dermatologist right away when you see a spot you don’t want. With Alopecia Areata, always use tropical and/or steroid injections. For longterm areata patients, National Hair Loss offers many programs to help.
Q: How many types of hair loss are there? CK: There are too many types to count! Of them four are the more common types.
Q: Can you tell us more about Telogen Effluvium? CK: Telogen Effluvium (TE) is often what women think they have when they have female pattern hair loss. TE is a massive shedding that is usually indicative of a hormonal imbalance, but it also occurs when a patient has undergoes surgery.
Q: What is the most common type of hair loss? CK: The most common is Androgenetic Alopecia. This is also known as male pattern baldness, but for women it is diffuseness on the top. Q: Can you tell us more about Androgenetic Alopecia? CK: Interesting fact: the first time you see a problem you have already lost or have 50% of your hair change on top. Men lose the bulk of their hair from ages 18 to 29. Women lose their hair gradually, but never go completely bald. Rather, the hair grows thinner and thinner. Q: What treatments do you offer patients with Androgenetic Alopecia? CK: Depending on how extreme, there are a few options we offer. There are medications, laser, microneedling with growth factors and Platelet Rich Plasma hair care that all help when experiencing hair loss. Q: Can you tell us more about Alopecia Areata? CK: We are seeing Alopecia Areata (AA) more and more in patients. AA is an autoimmune disease that can be flared up with stress or with trauma. We also see kids with AA because it is a genetically passed down autoimmune disorder.
Q: What treatments do you offer patients with Telogen Effluvium? CK: We offer some topicals to help the hairs grow back faster. TE usually comes right back after a shed, but it is important to remember that it takes time for the hair to grow. Q: Can you tell us more about Medical Treatment hair loss, such as chemotherapy? CK: Chemotherapy patients usually grow hair back at a very slow rate and in patches. We now have ways to accelerate the growth process by more than 50% after 12 weeks of treatment. In general, chemotherapy causes all the hairs to go into dormancy. When a patient finishes with chemo the hair— typically hair in the back—can come in faster than other spots. When we do therapy we quickly see the hair come back evenly and much more coarse. We do this by dilating the blood vessels and forcing protein synthesis into the hair. This forces the hair to grow faster AND evenly. Q: You are the first in the country to assist cancer-related hair loss. Tell us more about the hair recovery program you offer patients. CK: In 2010, I started a hair recovery program in Virginia Piper Cancer Center.
I worked for a year on patients to see if this program would benefit them. I also worked with Dr. Michael Hamblin from Harvard University who specializes in hair loss and treatments. The hospital asked us to permanently keep the recovery program, which we did. Now, we have three locations alone in cancer facilities that help patients in Arizona. Q: What is a common misconception about hair loss? CK: There are so many misconceptions about hair loss. I always hear that women think they have a thyroid or hormonal issue if they have experienced hair loss for years. This is not true most of the time. Another misconception is to stop washing your hair when you have hair loss. This is the opposite of what you should do! It is important to use products that help with your loss and to cleanse the dihydrotestosterone (DHT) off the scalp. don’t know about you, but I’m welcoming March with open arms. After being down for the count health-wise for the majority of last month (and from the sounds of it, I’m not the only one), I’m ready for a fresh start. And what better season for renewal than spring? Two local resorts agree; check out page 68 to see what properties just unveiled new digs. And speaking of resorts, don’t miss booking a staycation, or at least nabbing a seat at the chef’s table, at the city’s newest resort: Andaz Scottsdale Resort & Spa (page 130). Truth be told, I never appreciated the arrival of spring that much until I moved to Arizona (March 2 marks my four-year anniversary!). Right now, we’re suspended in a paradigm of seasonal perfection; the vibe is blissful and the month is primed with activities and events in full bloom, including all sorts of foodie fun from winemaker dinners (page 82) and a burger battle (page 78) to an all-star feast (page 80) and some snazzy salads (page 124). But we have to balance out all that eating somehow, right? Luckily, six fitness pros are keeping us in check with the lowdown on various exercise disciplines as well as some sage advice and motivation (page 51). I certainly found their workout wisdom inspirational. On a related note, I must say that month after month, I’m continually moved by the people who make up our community. There’s Tina Clemmons, whose made it her mission to detect signs of cancer early – and safely (page 36). There’s Nick Lowery, a former football pro turned motivational speaker and youth advocate (page 31). Of course, there’s the great Muhammad Ali, who will be honored and celebrated at this year’s Celebrity Fight Night (page 64). And then there’s our cover girl, Jamie Krell, whose not only giving women nationwide serious beauty and style inspiration, she’s also giving back (page 46). Alas, it wouldn’t be spring without florals, whether you wear them (page 92) or drink them (pages 88 and 122) – or do both at once. Who am I to judge? With that, here’s to a happy, healthy and simply marvelous March.

ick Lowery, a former NFL kicker for the Kansas City Chiefs, the New England Patriots and the New York Jets and a seven-time All Pro, has taken his dedication beyond the football field. He is a man with a mission in life: To empower people so they will then help others. “My goal is to help everyone find their unique human capacity to help, to contribute and to support others in their community,” Lowery says.

up close Born in Munich, Germany, Lowery had an international upbringing, growing up in London, England; Munich, Germany; and Washington, D.C. Lowery attended St. Paul’s School in London when he was nine where he learned to play cricket, for which he still holds the record for the longest cricket ball throw of 70 yards. There, he was also introduced to rugby, giving him his first taste of kicking a football. Known for his precision kicking – he was the most accurate kicker in NFL history and a Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Famer, as the team’s all-time leading scorer – Lowery is a firm believer that rejection and mistakes are strong motivators. Determined to make it as a kicker in the NFL, he was cut 11 times by eight teams before finally solidifying his place with the Kansas City Chiefs. While some may have been daunted by rejections, Lowery became more determined.
“A big part of my story is how necessary it was for me to get cut repeatedly,” says Lowery, who went on to have an 18-year career in the NFL. “The rejection made me work harder. We have to learn, and the best way to learn is to make as many mistakes as possible.” That lesson is part of Lowery’s speaking platform, in which he seeks to “build a legacy of inspiration and impact,” as well as the message of his charitable work with Native American youth, which began with starting a football camp. Calling on former NFL running back Clark Gaines for help, Lowery’s first camp, held in Chinle, Arizona, hosted 10 tribes and 90 children. Today, the same camp now encompasses seven sports, 40 tribes and 1,000 children.
Philanthropic Pursuits Lowery’s philanthropic work continued to expand as he used his stellar NFL career as a platform to network with other athletes, community and government leaders, and philanthropic organizations. Lowery realizes his career may open doors, but it’s the personal commitment and motivation that has made his programs longstanding successes. “It’s not the brightness of the spotlight on you,” Lowery says. “It’s the intensity of the brightness within.” And bright he is. Not only did Lowery work for three U.S. presidents – including helping launch Americorps for President Clinton and the Points of Light Foundation for President George H.W. Bush, both as part of each president’s White House Office of National Service Staff – during his NFL career, he was the first pro athlete with a masters degree and fellowship from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. He is also the winner of the most prestigious humanitarian award an NFL player can receive: The Byron Whizzer White Award. He created the Nick Lowery Youth Foundation to work with disadvantaged youth, particularly Native American youth, and established several programs to help them learn leadership skills, including Native Vision, which is now in its 20th year.

Lowery also established All Pros Against Bullying, which provides anti-bullying programs in Arizona schools. He also created Champions for the Homeless, an organization that feeds the homeless through St. Vincent de Paul in Phoenix. Lowery’s newest charitable endeavor focuses on the issue of concussions in football, and his involvement began with an event for the movie Concussion. Motivated by the idea of reducing concussions down to the youth sports level, last month Lowery hosted a luncheon for doctors and athletes during the Concussions: 2017 Summit, in collaboration with the CACTIS Foundation and the Barrow Neurological Institute. Lowery is excited about the innovations in protocols for treating concussions and in training football players. He cites the robotic tackling dummy developed by his alma mater Dartmouth College as a possible solution. Called the Dartmouth Way, the football team tackles the robot, rather than a team member during practice and training. According to Buddy Teevens, Lowery’s former field goal holder and current Dartmouth head football coach, concussions at Dartmouth have been reduced by 80 percent. “The goal is to get this new method into high schools in five years, and I’m talking to state coaches’ associations to get them on board.” 2017 holds other exciting ventures for Lowery, among them the development of a new social media app for athletes and the future release of his book, Naked and Alone with 80,000 People. “It’s about those moments of truth within ourselves,” Lowery says of his book. “It’s about learning to deal with the pressure and dangers in life.” While the amount of charitable work that Lowery has done seems almost superhuman, he is committed to ensuring his groups and programs have longevity. “If you start a program, you keep doing it now matter how hard it is,” Lowery says. “Every program I’ve ever started is still continuing today.” To learn more about Lowery, visit www.nickloweryfoundation.org.

fter working eight years as a senior equity trader at a capitalized hedge fund, Kierre Reeg decided to pursue a business endeavor that involved his family. “My sister approached me with a unique take on a flat iron, and we started to realize the potential it had in the beauty industry,” Reeg says. “I dove right in.” Reeg is the chief executive officer at TYME (www.tymestyle.com), an online beauty retailer based in Scottsdale that specializes in hair products and hot tools. Their flagship product, the TYME Iron, offers women a variety of styles – from beachy waves to straight hair – without compromising her “tyme.” It uses a different process than other tools, and it’s revolutionary shape forgos the challenges associated with most irons. Reeg describes himself as being the captain of a ship – creating strategy while navigating the business and its members. “I spend a lot of time architecting the business so I really work on the company rather than in the company,” he explains. Reeg notes that his family has a lot of respect for each other, and it’s been a lifelong desire to create a family-owned and -operated business. “As a leader, I focus on emotional IQ and we talk about it a lot in the company,” Reeg says. “It means we don’t put up with any victim mentalities within the company; we know that in order to succeed we really have to do everything right.”

Tina Clemmons’ mission to help others with early detection BY BRITTANY MARONEY

ll Tina Clemmons remembers about the day her best friend said she had cancer – and that she faced a double mastectomy, chemo and radiation – was that her heart felt like it was breaking. “They say that one out of every eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and that cancer touches everyone,” Clemmons says. “Jenny was my first experience, and it rocked me to the core. I began researching ways to help with early detection of cancer.” Clemmons, a former registered dietician who worked in medical equipment financing at the time, switched gears to refocus her career on helping others. She discovered thermography, a technique that uses no harmful radiation in screening and can detect signs of breast disease up to 10 years earlier than a mammogram. From there, Clemmons launched De Novo Scan (www.denovoscan.com), a clinic that uses thermal imaging as a safe, noninvasive cancer-screening, an alternative to the traditional mammogram. “There is so much fear surrounding cancer detection, so I was drawn to work that enabled women to have early detection in a more comforting environment,” Clemmons says. “Thermal imaging is such a great screening tool that really provides a window to your health, and I get to provide that service while easing people’s worries and discomfort.”
Etc. What do you think the future will bring for your business? My business has grown exponentially since opening my doors almost five years ago. I’ve had several clients approach me on partnership opportunities, so the plan is to open more De Novo Scan locations across the U.S. What are your favorite places to shop in the Valley? I’m a total bargain shopper. I find great things shopping online and find little treasures at My Sister’s Closet or Poor Little Rich Girl. Tell us the best advice you’ve ever been given. If your dreams and goals don’t scare you, then they aren’t big enough. Big things happen when you reach just outside your comfort zone!

ames Clark, partner and creative director at Blind Society, knows a thing or two about creating a lasting impression. What would we be surprised to find in your closet? A pair of way too skinny jeans that have never been worn. They could almost be classified as “jeggings.” It’s a purchase that I definitely question. In my defense, they were bought online from a European retailer and I just never returned them. Where can we find you on your days off and what are you wearing? On a day off, you’ll find me doing something active, so I’d most likely be wearing athletic clothes. Or hockey equipment. I’ve been playing hockey since I was three, and it’s one of my absolute passions. But just to be clear, I only wear hockey equipment on the rink and not out in public. That would just be awkward. What’s been your greatest accomplishment? Life has been amazing, but my greatest accomplishment is still yet to come.

I drive a convertible, so the top is usually down in this weather. Define paradise. Paradise is not a place – it’s a state of mind, a state of living. Paradise is living surrounded by those I love and who love me. It’s being excited to greet each new sunrise and looking forward to what the day brings. It’s a good meal, music that’s gets me dancing, and the relationships I have with my family, friends and colleagues.

here are many outlets for creative expression, and Jamie Krell’s creativity illuminates through everything that bears her signature. Krell is a style expert who curates and produces beauty, fashion and lifestyle segments on national television platforms. Krell’s segments have appeared on popular shows like Entertainment Tonight, Access Hollywood, The TODAY Show, The View and E! News. There is an art to assembling a five- to seven-minute segment that offers viewers both information and entertainment. With her impeccable taste and keen eye, Krell takes a TV spot’s blank canvas and turns it into a masterful, fashionable work of art. “It takes countless hours preparing for a segment, from coming up with a topic and theme to researching and finding the best brands, products or styles,” Krell says, who describes her role as part editor, part producer and part host. “Additionally, you have to coordinate details with the marketing teams, write the material, take photographs, pull looks, book models, style outfits, return samples and be well-versed to deliver the proper message for various brands and clients on TV – it’s a lot of work!”

A Natural Creative Krell fostered a creative mind early in life. Originally from Cleveland, she was raised in the beach city of San Diego with her artistically inclined family. “I come from a long line of artists in my family, and I have always enjoyed illustration and design,” Krell says. Growing up, Krell was involved in theater, trained in various styles of dance and took many art classes. Her interest in illustration and design urged her to pursue a degree in interdisciplinary fine arts at the University of Arizona. It wasn’t until she studied and lived in a major fashion capital – London, England – that her true creative outlet made itself known. “In London, that’s really when I would say ‘it all started.’ I learned pattern-making and computer-aided design; I took photography and design courses and spent hours sketching, drawing and learning how to construct clothing. It was a great way to express myself and another creative outlet,” she says. Fresh out of school, Krell took her design skills and began her career in the fashion and beauty industry working alongside the costume designer on NBC’s hit sitcom Friends. Krell learned from her supervisor’s management style and her ability to juggle multiple responsibilities at once. The invaluable lessons Krell gained from her supervisor would later fuel her success as a beauty and style entrepreneur. Krell was tasked with exploring the Warner Bros. merchandise room, selecting fabric from the LA Fashion Market, and photographing and organizing looks for each cast member on Friends. “I learned so much from [my supervisor] as she was extremely talented, but also tough,” she says. “Being able to explore this opportunity at such a young age, and at the beginning of my career, was truly a dream come true.” Krell, a budding stylist with an already impressive resume, decided to stay in Los Angeles upon a referral to E! Entertainment and Style Network. “[The Friends’ costumer designer] said I should start out in entertainment and experience all the facets of TV, film and production and see what I liked and where it took me.” So, Krell did just that. two years she explored the entertainment sphere in casting, producing, writing and editing. During this creative exploration, Krell found her creative outlet in producing beauty, fashion and lifestyle content. “I was able to meet and build relationships with some of the biggest fashion and beauty brands – including Sephora, NARS, John Frieda and Smashbox – agents, managers, public relations and marketing executives, wardrobe stylists and makeup artists in the business. I have continued to nurture so many of those relationships to this day.” Krell admits that the industry’s competiveness is taxing, but the relationships with like-minded and inspiring women make the harder days worth it. “We all bring something different and unique to the table,” she says. “I am all about lifting each other up, and I gravitate toward women in life and work who feel the same. I have been lucky to find such a supportive system of women while growing up in this business.” After five years in LA’s beauty entertainment industry, Krell moved to New York City to spearhead a broadcast division for a major beauty and fashion public relations firm. At first, Krell found herself intimidated by the cutthroat atmosphere of the city. Then, recalling that NYC living was always a dream of hers, she shifted her mindset from trepidation to curiosity. “I decided I would give it my all and explore and enjoy the Big Apple as much as I could,” she says. “My greatest challenge was overcoming those first few months, which were really hard. Ultimately, the three years I lived in New York City left me with the greatest reward. As an article in Forbes once said, ‘New York City is the world’s best teacher.’” As the broadcast director at a major PR firm, Krell wrote, pitched and secured segments on morning, daytime, late night and entertainment shows. One day, Krell’s boss decided to turn the tables and put the broadcast director in the spotlight. “My boss put me on camera to host one of the segments I had pitched,” she says. I thought she was crazy, but I was surprisingly comfortable and it went well. The rest is sort of history after that.”

in cities nationwide. But now, she has the luxury to express her creativity within the comforts of her own home. Krell moved to Arizona to be with her husband, and the peaceful desert landscape proved to be exactly what she needed at the time. “I have a nice work-life balance now. Living in Scottsdale has contributed to a newfound happiness rooted in a great sense of community,” she says. “I love that our community is literally the definition of tight-knit. People here genuinely care about each other and are always friendly.” Since moving here, Krell has become involved with the local charity People Acting Now Discovering Answers (PANDA), a group of 70 members who raise money for Steele Children’s Research Center at the University of Arizona. Krell utilizes her expertise in content creation to help build special components, such as live auctions and raffles, at the organization’s signature event, the Children Helping Children Fashion Show. With the help of Krell’s extensive contact list and connections, the live auction and raffle from last year’s event raised $150,000 on its own. This year’s fashion show takes place this month, on March 25, at The Phoenician. Krell will serve as emcee, as she has for the last two years. “I always say the single best use of my relationships and contacts is being able to call upon them to help raise money for a charity,” she says. “You realize quickly that giving back, in any small way you can, has the ability to make a significant, positive impact and difference in someone else’s life. “I am proud to live in this city for so many reasons,” Krell continues. “But I am most proud of the philanthropic efforts happening all around us.” From Friends and life in NYC’s fast lane to building a style empire in the Valley, it goes without saying that there is no stopping Krell. s the summer season looms before us – and with it, swimwear, shorts and sleeveless everything – there’s no better time to hit the gym. In honor of March being National Nutrition Month, we talked with six experts across various fitness disciplines to get a glimpse into their individual workout worlds, how they inspire others, and why they are each firm believers in their fields.

What are the top three songs on your class’ playlist? Top three songs? Too difficult to narrow down but top three artists I can do. My go-to artists are Glass Animals, Robin Schulz and have to throw Bob Marley in there too … I could go on and on.

How should people fuel up before or after one of your workouts? Hydration is key, especially for hot yoga. You sweat a lot, and it’s good to hydrate and rehydrate with electrolyte drinks. I drink water all day long, but coconut water is my go-to pre- and post-class drink. How do you motivate your class? A great playlist with upbeat music helps people get in the zone. I consistently remind students to focus on their breath; that’s always the top priority. I always notice extra effort when I mention the benefits of what we’re currently doing too. What made you choose yoga? Ever since I was a kid, I ate healthy thanks to my mom and was active thanks to my dad. After my first hot yoga class in high school, I knew I had found something great. I was hooked on the way I felt after class – calm and relaxed yet empowered! People always say if you love what you do, you never work a day in your life, and I feel so blessed to be doing what I love. What can people expect when they come to your class? A party. I’m the host and the DJ; you’re the guest and we’re going to sweat, move and jam out together. I like fun, upbeat music when the class gets difficult, but we always warm up and cool down nice and slow. It’s going to be hot and humid, but after everyone’s first class, they keep coming back for more! Any fitness tips you can share? Know your limits and be mindful with your movements to avoid injury. Do what feels good for you, especially in yoga. Each day is different so never be too hard on yourself. If you had a great class one day and the next wasn’t so great, it’s all good. Just breathe deep, flow slow and enjoy the process.

How should people fuel up after one of your workouts? I recommend a good meal with some lean protein and healthy carbs. If whole food is not an option, a protein shake will work. I am definitely an advocate of eating real food over shakes or meal replacements. How do you motivate your class? I try to utilize as many elements in my class as possible to connect with each individual. Some may be motivated by the music, some may be motivated by my words, some may be motivated by seeing me push on the bike. What made you choose cycling? I love the connection of music, mind, body and bike. I love that you can have a room full of people from all different walks of life and all different fitness levels come together as a group and get not only a great workout, but find a connection to something greater than themselves. What can people expect when they come into your class? Great music, high energy, lots of cues for good form, plenty of encouragement, some inspiring messages, and to walk out feeling better than when they walked in. What’s your favorite workout clothing brand? I love the quality of lululemon as well as the social commitment of the brand; I’ve been their ambassador for two years. I also love Goldsheep because they have so many fun prints! I wear their Champagne leggings every Sunday for my brunch ride – we serve fruit and mimosas after class with the intention of getting the riders to know one another better. Any fitness tips you can share? Finding a friend (or friends) to keep you accountable for your health/fitness goals. It’s way more fun to workout with other people, and I can guarantee you’ll work harder! “Stronger together” is my motto!

How should people fuel up before one of your workouts? Consume a slow-digesting carbohydrate to give you sustainable fuel throughout your workout. For example, oatmeal and whole grain toast with peanut butter. How do you motivate your class? I love to give participants a positive quote to think about during their workout. One of my favorite quotes is “the body achieves what the mind believes.” What made you choose high-intensity interval training? I was always a part of athletics, including volleyball, gymnastics, track and field, dance, swimming and bodybuilding. In December 2015, I became a member of Orangetheory Fitness Downtown Phoenix. After my first class, I was hooked! I left my job with the Department of Child Safety to pursue my dream of working in the fitness industry. I started off in sales and transitioned into coaching. What can people expect when they come to your class? A warm welcome, to feel motivated throughout the entire class, and enjoy an upbeat, rockin’ playlist that will keep you energized throughout the class. What’s your favorite workout clothing brand? Forever 21. Their clothing is not only well-made but fashionable too. I feel that cute and affordable workout clothes can give anyone a little boost in their step and make them feel good about themselves during their workouts. Any fitness tips you can share? One of my favorite fitness tips is to remember to drink water. It is recommended to drink half your body weight in ounces of water per day.

I constantly remind them why they walked in the door. Whatever it is they came to change, they need to own it now. What made you choose Pilates? It’s always challenging yet approachable for most and offers longevity over other forms of fitness as we age. What can people expect when they come to your class? I will challenge you to learn your own body, and I will push you to explore your limits. I will keep you safe, but you’re here to accomplish something. It’s not about what you can do; it’s about how hard you try. What’s your favorite workout clothing brand? Lululemon! I was a two-time brand ambassador so I’m biased for life. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? Focus on effort, not results. If you’re not having fun, you’re trying too hard. Any fitness tips you can share? Keep learning. Try different trainers and exercise at different times. Complacency can be just as bad as no activity.

I strive to set the bar high by how I eat, train and live my life 24/7/365. I don’t believe in teaching theory; I am a true practitioner of fitness and healthy living. What made you choose personal training? Fitness saved my life. In all reality if I didn’t change the habits I had as a younger man, I wouldn’t be here today. It was a gift to me, and I work every day to give that gift back to those I serve. What can people expect when they come into your training session? A safe, fun, comfortable atmosphere where you can be yourself and work to your full potential. Expect to be surrounded by a positive, supportive community of people who have the same common goal – to become healthy, move better, feel better and look better through hard work and consistent effort. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? Comparison is the thieve of joy; never compare how you look to others you see in magazines, on TV or in the gym – we are all dealt a different genetic card and our own personal bests will differ. Just focus on being the best version of you! Any fitness secrets you can share? The real secret is that there isn’t one. There is no magic diet or training program that is going to get you results for life. Understand the only way to achieve lifelong results is by making a lifestyle change and sticking to it forever.

How should people fuel up before or after one of your workouts? I personally love Quest bars. Ninety-nine percent of the time, you can find a halfeaten cookie dough bar in my purse. How do you motivate your class? I use motivational cues that remind clients how strong they are. My favorites are telling them that they can do anything for 20 seconds or that they are stronger than they think. I know when I hear those in class it makes me dig deeper, so I try to do the same for my clients. What made you choose barre? I have a dance background so after I stopped dancing and tried Pure Barre, it felt like a great fit. There’s no dance involved, but it was a natural fit since there are some positions reminiscent of ballet. What can people expect when they come to your class? To sweat! The most common misconception is that it’s an easy workout because it’s associated with a ballet barre. That is most certainly not the case. We perform small movements but the burn is BIG. What’s your favorite workout clothing brand? I’ve recently been into Goldsheep. I love a plain black legging, but Goldsheep’s outrageous patterns are so fun. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? Abs are made in the kitchen. As much as you work out, it all comes back to your diet.

HONORING ALI
How Celebrity Fight Night and Muhammad Ali joined forces in support of a cure for Parkinson’s disease – and how the boxer’s legacy is continued today BY MIACHELLE DEPIANO PHOTOS BY PHIL GUDENSCHWAGER
C
elebrity Fight Night (CFN) is one of the nation’s biggest and most elite charity events in the U.S. – and certainly the most notable in Scottsdale. This year’s event is extra special as the gala will celebrate the life and achievements of its iconic legacy, Muhammad Ali, who passed away June 3, 2016. Many people recognize the star-studded gala for its attending celebrities and VIP guests, as well as the money raised primarily for the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center (MAPC) at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix. Yet, some may not know how Celebrity Fight Night began or how Ali became its legendary guest of honor. In 1994, Jimmy Walker, the founder of CFN, wanted to create a charity fundraiser and called basketball player Charles Barkley, whom he’d been friends with since Barkley played for

spotlight the Philadelphia 76ers. Walker proposed Barkley participate in a mock boxing match with oversized gloves against boxing champion Michael Carbajal to raise money, and Barkley readily agreed. With the help of former basketball player Dan Majerle, together with Barkley and Carbajal, Celebrity Fight Night was born. “At the time, Barkley practically owned Phoenix,” Walker recalls. “I knew his name on the invitation guaranteed success, and he’s very charitable. Without Barkley, we wouldn’t be here now.” The first Celebrity Fight Night raised $100,000 for the Michael Carbajal Gym. “We had 400 people in the room and made $100,000 for charity,” Walker says. “Now, we sell tables for $100,000.” The second year, country singer Kenny Rogers was the featured guest and performed a 40-minute concert in addition to the scheduled mock fight, and the money raised went to Olympian Gary Hall Sr.’s Phoenix Swim Club. For the third year, Walker knew he had do something new for CFN to keep it fresh and invited Muhammad Ali to be the featured guest. Walker met Ali at a Los Angeles Lakers basketball game in 1984, the year that Ali was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. “I shared with him [Ali] that this would be a natural fit,” Walker says. Lonnie, Ali’s wife, remembers Ali’s attendance that first year.
“Muhammad received invitations all the time,” Lonnie says. “This was just one. It was small and mostly men. But he enjoyed it and kept coming back.” Eventually, Ali accepted the invitation due to its charitable focus, and from there, CFN took on a new direction and meaning. In related circumstances starting in 1994, Dr. Abraham Lieberman, Ali’s physician at Barrow Neurological Institute, approached Ali about becoming the spokesperson for Parkinson’s disease. Initially, Ali refused. “Muhammad said no,” Lonnie says. “He didn’t dwell on it and felt no one else should. He didn’t see [Parkinson’s disease] as a daily challenge.” Lieberman visited the Alis in their Michigan home to make a personal appeal, which was rebuffed again. Upon returning to Arizona, Lieberman made one more appeal in the form of a poem. Lieberman finally received the agreement from Ali he’d been after. “The poem was awesome,” Lonnie says. “But it was that Dr. Lieberman convinced Muhammad that he’d help a lot of people [in becoming the spokesperson]. It was then that Ali was hooked. If it was about only him, then no.” Between Lieberman, Walker and Ali, the MAPC was conceptualized, and the center became the primary recipient of the funds raised by CFN. Recognized as a National Parkinson Foundation Center of Excellence, it’s now the premier treatment center for those with Parkinson’s disease. The funds from CFN are used in programs such as Ali Care, in which patients who cannot afford treatment are provided financial and logistical assistance so they can receive the treatment they need.
Celebrity Fight Night XXIII: Celebrating Ali At this year’s event, CFN will focus on Muhammad Ali’s life and contributions. Walker alludes to a few planned highlights of the event. “There will be a boxing ring on the stage,” Walker says. “There will be pictures all around, and we’ll have testimonials.” Harrison Ford and Stefano Ricci will be this year’s honorees, and many celebrities who have been long-term supporters and friends of Ali will be attendance, including Billy Crystal, Sharon Stone and Larry King, who will all present a special tribute. “Some of the guests knew Ali for a long time,” says Walker, who also describes the value of his own relationship with Ali. “The impact he had on me was the patience, the kindness, and the love he had for people. He said the greatest religion is love, and he lived it.” CFN continues to grow, evolve and persist in its mission with the MAPC to find a cure for Parkinson’s disease. CFN not only provides funds to the MAPC, but also to other charities such as The Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Phoenix. CFN now has two events each year, with the second event in the fall in Italy hosted by Andrea Bocelli. A portion of the CFN Italy funds goes to the Andrea Bocelli Foundation. This year marks Italy’s fourth event, and Bocelli and Sir Elton John will perform together at the Colosseum in Rome, among other planned events. The event, which also features a reception and cocktail hour with its own host of high-end fare, is among the hottest culinary tickets of the year. he 47th annual Scottsdale Arts Festival will gather 175 jury-selected artists during its celebration March 10-12. As Scottsdale’s oldest arts festival, the annual event features artists across many art disciplines, including ceramics, digital art, drawing, glass, painting, photography, jewelry, sculpture, metal and wood. Artwork from the event is available for purchase directly from the artists or via the festival’s online auction. Festival Manager Jamie Prins describes the event as a community tradition and a major fundraiser for Scottsdale Arts that helps to support its programming, education and outreach initiatives. The event, which is ranked as one of the top arts festivals in the nation, is a collaboration between Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, Scottsdale Public Art and Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA).
Featured Artist This year’s featured artist, Montreal-based Julia Gilmore, will be participating for the first time at the festival and exhibiting around 35 of her vibrant oil paintings. “I try to put together a collection of works that is my interpretation of that place. It’s based on a gut feeling, and it’s different for each place,” says Gilmore, who is also thrilled to share her work with a new audience. “For Scottsdale, I’m bringing a painting of cowboy boots and another one showing a party dress. I’ll also have some paintings that show the colors of the desert.” Gilmore describes her work as simple, uncomplicated and straightforward. Tell us about your Italian heritage. I was born on my family’s farm in the Campania region of Italy and was raised in the small town of Reino – think lush rolling hills, olive groves and vineyards as far as the eyes can see. I was living “farm to table” before it was a buzzword! How did you get your start in the kitchen? I began cooking for my family when I was 12, after I lost my mother. By age 21, I moved to Rome, where I served as a personal chef and then eventually took over service at a luxury seaside resort. I would eventually open my open restaurants and bistros across Rome and the Italian regions of Calabria and Abruzzo. When did you make your move to the United States? My love, Sima, is originally from Manhattan. We met on New Year’s Eve in 1993 while she was working as a recording artist and performer in Italy. We moved to New York in 1996 to get married and get our start in the restaurant business in America. We opened a series of successful restaurants over the next decade, earning the coveted Award of Excellence from The New York Times along the way.

How did you make your way to Arizona? In late 2002, we were simply visiting friends out here and fell in love. Within three months of visiting, we not only moved here, but also opened Marcellino Ristorante (originally in Central Phoenix; we moved to the Scottsdale space in 2010) and received a five-star rating from Arizona’s then-top food critic, Howard Seftel. What would people be surprised to know about you? I not only serve as chef at Marcellino, but also designed the Scottsdale space – and even built some of it – myself. n January, the JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa unveiled MERITAGE, an urban tavern. “We’d had our traditional Meritage Steakhouse concept since 2002, and it was time for a change,” says the restaurant’s manager Travis Parsley. “With the upscale urban tavern, we have moved to a more eclectic, sustainable menu and seasonal cocktails but are still sourcing ingredients locally whenever possible.” Enter One Last Fling ($13), a tantalizingly tart cocktail, with distinct floral appeal, whose base spirit is Commerce Gin from Arizona Distilling Company. “While not made from all five of Arizona’s famous Cs – copper, cattle, cotton, citrus and climate – the gin pays tribute to Arizona by developing the gin using five Cs of its own: cardamom, coriander, cumin, cinnamon and citrus,” Parsley says. “It’s very smooth with mild botanicals.” Both Bertina Elderflower and Tempus Fugit Violette liqueurs are combined with the gin in a shaker over ice with fresh lemon juice, housemade simple syrup and cloudberry, a raspberry-like fruit. “The elderflower adds hints of passionfruit, peach and pear, while the violette adds subtle floral notes,” Parsley says. “The simple syrup provides a quick hit of sweetness while the lemon juice provides acidity on the tongue and balances out the flavors.” One Last Fling is served in a martini coupe garnished with edible marigolds. T
he Infiniti QX30 is the latest all-new vehicle to enter the heavily populated and growing entry-level compact luxury crossover utility vehicle segment, joining the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLA, to name a few. Infiniti is Nissan’s luxury brand, and, for the most part, builds excellent vehicles. Stylistically, Infiniti’s vehicles have always had more visual appeal than competitors from Acura and Lexus, but I’ve never found them particularly thrilling to drive. This QX30 is unusual in that it’s the first love child from the Renault-Nissan partnership with Mercedes-Benz. The QX30 is actually based on the MercedesBenz GLA platform, picking up the 2.0liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine SO SCOTTSDALE! |

and transmission, with some tweaking to the suspension. Infiniti offers three QX30 trim levels: The standard front-wheel drive, the spiced-up QX30 Sport tested here (also front-wheel drive), and an all-wheel drive model. The first two models are less utility vehicle and more upscale compact hatchback. I liked the 2.0-liter, 208-horsepower engine in my QX30 Sport; it felt quick and quite responsive after the initial turbo lag. The transmission is a seven-speed dualclutch with three driving modes: manual, eco and sport. I tried all three settings and none of them felt comfortable or precise, with different shift points and throttle settings. The sport setting held the gears too long and wasn’t suitable for driving around town, yet eco felt too sluggish. It felt capable but not as confident as the Volkswagen Golf GTI, Mazda CX3 or even the Mercedes-Benz GLA. The cabin is compact with a very small rear seat. Conversely, the front seats are especially roomy with lots of travel fore and aft. Even the tallest drivers will find ample legroom. Materials and build quality are premium and it looks Mercedes-like because it mostly is. But because of its diminutive size, visibility is compromised, though a surround-view camera system is optional. The QX30 gets Infiniti’s InTouch seven-inch, single screen infotainment system instead of Mercedes’ COMAND system, a system I much prefer. And while the GLA gets standard forward collision warning and automatic emergency breaking, those important safety features are optional on the QX30. I think they should be standard on a luxury vehicle like this. Overall, I found the QX30 pleasing, refined and generally delightful to drive. However, with a comparable Mercedes GLA around $2,500 more, including desired safety features and a more compliant suspension, I suggest test driving both vehicles before deciding.

No-Drain Tummy-Tuck Dr. Nachbar has been offering a No-Drain Tummy-Tuck since 2008 to help women who have developed bulging and looseness in their abdomen due to causes such as pregnancy or weight loss.
