Here’s what one patient had to say about her surgery... I would recommend Dr. Gawley’s office to anyone who believes they deserve to feel good about themselves, any of my ‘mommy’ friends who not only want their pre-baby body back but a better body than they had before kids... Dr. Gawley and his entire staff have made such a positive impact on my entire life. I have told them that Dr. Gawley has given me a confidence transplant, and that is really the only way to describe the effect my surgery has had...I actually feel pretty and attractive and am ever so grateful. I also have a more fulfilling relationship with my partner, because for the first time ever I am not self conscious... and ladies, the lights are now on at night!

AIN. For Hair Loss Sufferers, the Best Just Got Better

National Hair Loss unveils an exciting partnership with one of Arizona’s leading plastic surgeons, Dr. Cheri Ong, using cutting-edge technology and medical expertise to deliver breakthrough treatments.

Carly Klein

Founder & President

Y

ou could lose your hair for any number of reasons – genetics, hormonal imbalances, medical conditions such as Alopecia, or as a side effect of medication, just to name a few. But no matter how it happens, the result is the same: a profound impact on your selfesteem, one that colors every area of your life. For Carly Klein, founder of National Hair Loss, it wasn’t enough to simply treat the patient. She wanted to treat the patient well, providing not only the foremost variety of advanced hair loss solutions, but the crucial emotional support that other hair loss clinics lacked. She started with a compassionate staff of people who have firsthand experience with hair loss – either their own, or that of a loved one – and sought to provide the most specialized care possible for each individual issue, even instituting the country’s first cancer-specific hair loss division. With a focused, holistic approach and an incredible level of success, National Hair Loss has become renowned for its ability to not just restore hair, but to restore hope. Never one to rest on her laurels, though, Carly continually seeks new ways for her company to improve its already-exceptional level of care. One of the most innovative therapies available to hair loss sufferers is platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, which uses the patient’s own blood plasma to stimulate cellular growth. When it came to offering PRP treatments at National Hair Loss, there was no question that it had to be an exceptional experience. So, in keeping with Carly’s philosophy of going above and beyond, National Hair Loss has partnered with someone who regularly utilizes PRP with amazing results: board-certified plastic surgeon Cheri Ong, MD. With a focus on regenerative health and breast cancer reconstruction – and, like Carly, care and support beyond the procedures – Dr. Ong is an enthusiastic advocate of this type of therapy. The PRP harnesses the body’s restorative capabilities, enabling it to heal in an unprecedented way, improving surgical outcomes and tissue regeneration. “It has completely changed my practice,” she says. “The results are

SS_3_13Ads_Jan17.indd 4

outstanding. The human body is amazing – feed it with the right ingredients, and it can do incredible things!” Dr. Ong has exhaustively researched the process and thoroughly understands the science to maximize its potential. She has called upon a network of top-tier advisors, from scientists to immunologists, to further evolve her techniques for the best outcomes possible. For patients with poor quality platelets, whether from aging, illness, or other reasons, there are additional options – including human-derived growth factors – which continue to produce positive results. “The world of regenerative medicine is accelerating rapidly, and we are fortunate to be able to provide these options to our patients, says Dr. Ong. For patients at her practice, and now for the patients of National Hair Loss, this means a life-changing advantage. “All ‘PRP’ is not created equal,” Dr. Ong asserts. The techniques are vital: “The PRP protocol we utilize yields optimal platelet concentration, and is processed in a particular way to get the highest amount of growth factors,” she says. “Our process, including the injection technique, results in excellent outcomes and ultimately fewer treatments for our patients. Most see significant change with one treatment, or in severe cases, two.” And of course, patients receive the benefit of comprehensive care from highly trained professionals who understand the reasons behind hair loss, and can make sure there are no underlying issues which need to be addressed. With such a similar commitment to excellence and compassion, and a shared vision of raising the bar, both Carly and Dr. Ong are thrilled at what their partnership is going to offer hair loss sufferers. “We are extremely excited to be able to deliver patient-specific solutions, restoring hope and providing second chances for so many suffering from hair loss,” says Dr. Ong. And with PRP technology, she adds, “We’ve tapped into some amazing things.” To schedule a no-cost consultation, visit www.nationalhairlossassoc.com or call 602-283-2355 or 877-551-5350 (toll free).

ello, 2017! While January falls during the thick of winter in most places, here in Scottsdale this month comes alive with activity, which seems fitting for the birth of another year. From all the auto auctions to concerts to art festivals aplenty, there’s no shortage of things to do. Speaking of autos, there’s a major one on the docket at the 46th Annual Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction – currently owned by none other than legendary rocker Steven Tyler. Our cover story (page 42) delves into the details of his rare 2012 Hennessey Venom GT Spyder, why Tyler is donating the proceeds to charity, and his segue into country music. For you country music fans, it doesn’t stop there. The Waste Management Phoenix Open ushers in four nights of music fandom at the party-centric Birds Nest (page 70). The first two nights showcase country headliners like Jake Owen and Toby Keith while the next two nights will transition to major names in hip-hop, punk and electronic music. And in honor of all things new, we’ve got the low down on spa escapes to help you renew (page 98), new places to break a sweat (page 68), restaurants reviving a tried-and-true tradition (page 124), beauty products to revitalize (page 92), and a luxe meditation retreat that will help you welcome the next 12 months in a state of awareness and ease (page 100). Plus, we talked with six concierges to get the scoop on must-do local experiences, the best places for date night and so much more, encouraging us all to add some novelty to our repertoire (page 79). So, here’s to a fresh start and all of the exciting possibilities that every new beginning holds. Perhaps I’ll see you fireside overlooking Camelback Mountain (page 51), toasting all that is to come.

FROM TV TO TOTS

Nadine Bubeck reports her story of unconditional love and how she is giving back to young ones beyond her own BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE

N

PHOTOS BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

adine Bubeck gravitated toward the arts at an early age. Her interests in writing and public speaking flourished with every English class she took, and her vocation was clear from the start. “I aimed to find a career path the best suited my interests, and journalism seemed very fitting,” she says.

up close Bubeck grew up in the town of Los Gatos, California, and she graduated from San Francisco State University with a degree in radio and television. Prior to graduation, Bubeck interned at San Francisco’s ABC TV station, and it was this experience that introduced Bubeck to the world of broadcast journalism. “I fell in love with the news atmosphere. It was busy, exciting and that fun type of chaotic,” she explains. “At the station and among my colleagues, I felt at home, a professional type of home and one where I felt a natural belonging.” Broadcast journalism became Bubeck’s home for the next seven-plus years. She began her career as a young reporter for a small station in Yuma, Arizona, and one year later, scored a dream job at the newly revamped Fox affiliate in San Diego. While she loved her job, Bubeck felt pulled toward Arizona. She decided to follow her heart and call the Valley her new home. Not only did Arizona lead her to a morning anchor gig at Phoenix’s KPHO-TV (CBS 5), but Arizona is also where Bubeck met her husband.

Changing Gears It was, however, the birth of Bubeck’s first son, Nicholas, that inspired a new direction. Bubeck experienced a rocky pregnancy and was diagnosed with complete placenta previa, a condition that can lead to other serious, life-threatening complications (for both baby and mom), and she was put on hospitalized bed rest. Nicholas, which fittingly means victorious, was born six weeks early at four pounds and 11 ounces. Upon holding her son in her arms for the first time, Bubeck’s new vocation became instantly clear. “My heart overflowed with emotion. Life before my little man was only life leading up to him. That being said, I’ve taken on a handful of things as a mompreneur.” During her pregnancy with Nicholas, kept a journal to chronicle her experience. “It became a free form of therapy to help get me through a bumpy journey that became a beautiful experience,” says Bubeck, who ultimately published her pregnancy journal, Expecting Perfect: My Bumpy Journey to Mommyhood, to provide support to other preemie parents. passions: broadcasting and parenting. Along with her two babies, Nicholas and Zachary, Bubeck’s boutique apparel line, Mama B. Designs, has become her professional “baby.” “I’ve always wanted to start something on my own, and a clothing line seemed fitting because I love fashion.” Bubeck says. “I wanted to create fun and stylish tanks, tops and tees for moms and sons to coordinate with one another.” Mama B. Designs (www.mamabdesigns.com) launched its online boutique in May 2016 with a mission of “Fashion That Gives Back.” Mama B. Designs’ Miracle Line sells high-quality tanks, tops and tees that are professionally printed with simple words and phrases that pack a powerful punch, reinforcing the mission. Men, women and children who don Mama B. Designs are both stylishly spreading prematurity awareness and directly supporting the March of Dimes; Bubeck’s line donates 50 percent of the retail price of each Miracle Line item sold. “I am so incredibly thrilled to partner Mama B. Designs with March of Dimes, a foundation determined to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality,” Bubeck says. “It is a beautiful organization and one that speaks to my heart as a preemie parent.” Bubeck spent a handful of years reporting the stories of others. Now, she is reporting her own story through clothing meant to inspire and her mommy empire. Everything she does is driven by unconditional love – a story worthy of all the on-air time. “I’ve learned the true meaning of unconditional love,” she says. “My boys are my world and my motivation. I want to lead by example, I want to instill in them the drive to pursue their dreams, and I want to try to be a better person – for them. I just want them to be happy.”

The Ultimate Guide to 2017 Hair Color Trends Rodney Gentry, full-service Designer and Hair Color Specialist, Sachi Studios

As another year arrives, it’s time to look forward to what the next 12 months hold in store. Fall and winter 2016 were all about the blondes. Now, it’s time for color duos to step forward and shine. Scottsdale’s top hair designer and color specialist, Rodney Gentry, is always at the forefront of the latest trends. For spring 2017, he recommends a range of looks, with a focus on outstanding color accented by perfect accessories. “We’ve already seen color mixes celebrated by the use of balayage in 2016, and that trend is going to develop and really take hold in 2017,” he says. “A blend of deep and light browns are going to be really big news for the spring season, with perhaps a hint of warm blonde thrown in as well. It’s all about achieving a fantastically natural graduation with the Balayage technique.” Sombre hair, which emphasizes a soft connection between the two colors, will be big business in the year ahead, as will ombre hair, where the color connection is somewhat more pronounced, though still with a very feminine, flowing gradation. Spring is also the time to let your hair down; natural, tumbling locks with a slight curl toward the end and around the face to soften it are the way to go. Length is everything as we head into 2017 – even the bobs are getting longer, according to Scottsdale color guru Rodney Gentry. “There’s a really feminine feel to the looks we’re seeing on the catwalks as we enter 2017. Severe cuts and sharp outlines are no longer the way to go. Soft, long styles are definitely in, with bobs being cut longer this season. Even the shortest of styles should have a sleek, sensual feel to it. Michelle Williams at the Critics’

balance that’s really feminine and playful – a look that can impress in the office as well as looking stunning after hours.” To top it all off, accessories will be essential in 2017. The emphasis is again on feminine styles, with delicate clips and tiny, sparking gems adding a sense of glamour and style to the overall look. Whether you’re in need of a quick refresh to stay on trend or a complete style overhaul, 2017 is the year to make color your priority.

Choice Awards is the perfect encapsulation of how to wear super short hair with grace in 2017.” The look carries across to updos as well. The latest celebs to hit the red carpet with their tresses tied back have all opted for artfully escaped soft curls or long fringes that perfectly frame the face. Color duos are set to be big in other ways this year, too. Standout streaks will be a major trend, with colors from ice cream pink to denim blue being used sparingly but to great effect. It’s all about making a statement that is at once bold and subtle, something that takes a top color specialist to achieve without taking the use of color too far. “The smallest of candy pink streaks can look incredible when done correctly, and we’re definitely going to see more experimentation with colors over the course of 2017,” Gentry says. “It’s about achieving a

SLIDIN’ INTO SCOTTSDALE Eric Bush launches a food truck to bring his family together BY BROOKE GOLDSTEIN

fter his oldest son cried and begged him not to leave for work, Eric Bush made starting his own business a priority. “It was one of the hardest times as a father that I can remember,” he says. “After that, I knew I needed to work for myself so I could be home more without sacrificing our finances.” With 10 years of restaurant experience – and seeing the demand for a food truck serving high-quality, gourmet sliders – Bush and his fiance, Sarah Barno, opened Electric Sliders (www.electricslidersaz.com) this past November. Bush’s love for food grew after his fiance inspired him to try something new – first, new foods, and eventually, launching Electric Sliders. “We provide an amazing experience that people can share with their families and friends, and then we get to come home to our boys – it doesn’t get much better than that.” Bush’s new venture as a food truck owner requires more than dishing out burgers – you’ll find him taking orders, helping Chef Barno on the grill, or out and about in the community trying to be a positive influence to youth. “There isn’t a specific job I do for Electric Sliders,” he says. “I try to do everything a leader and father can do.”

Etc.

What made you decide to change careers? After working in restaurant management, I felt I’d gained enough experience to start my own business, which would also allow me to be the father my two sons deserve. I wanted to work for my family and myself. Where can people find your truck? We are all over the Valley throughout the week. Our daily schedule can be found on our Instagram page: @electricslidersaz. To book the truck for private parties or events, email eric@electricslidersaz.com or call 480.343.3237. What advice do you have for aspiring business owners? Failure is only a possibility if you believe it is. Work hard and believe in what you are doing. Never think short term and always focus on the end game. When you do that, you’ll realize there never is an end game, and you’ll be working toward something greater than you originally envisioned. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

HEALING HORSES

Terra Schaad brings mindfulness to others with the help of four-legged friends BY TERESA K. TRAVERSE

erra Schaad has always believed in the therapeutic power of horses. When she was a child, her neighbor let her adopt a horse. But Terra recalls a different and deeper meaning behind the gesture. “What he was really doing was teaching us about love, family, respect and how important a sense of belonging was,” says Schaad, who is the executive director at Hunkapi (www.hunkapi.org), a Scottsdale-based nonprofit offering therapeutic riding programs for special needs children, emotional regulation, and those battling addition and bereavement. Although Schaad had no experience working with kids when she was hired in 1999, she knew her skills as a horse trainer would serve her well in her new role. She has seen firsthand how horses have helped others through mindfulness. “Horses trained me to be deeply aware of emotions and how to read subtle changes in expression and energies,” says Schaad, who is dedicated to ensuring others know the healing power of horseback riding. “I was motivated to always have horses in my life because they made me happy and as I got older, I realized it was my duty to this world to make sure others had that opportunity,” she says. “Today, I am deeply committed to that purpose.”

Etc.

You’ve been working at the same place since 1999. How do you keep things fresh? The ability to learn, grow, build and create. Most importantly, finding people to work with who light your mind on fire and staying present and grateful through the process. What do you love about horses? I love how effortlessly they teach us to be present and to move in love, not fear. They ask us to set compassionate boundaries, be assertive, work hard, play hard and get totally present in our bodies. They ask us to be our best and to open our hearts. What is the best way to take care of yourself? Pick something that makes you lose sense of time and gets you totally present – and do it every day. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

he restaurant industry can be tough but Timm Timbrook, managing partner at Paul Martin’s American Grill, can’t imagine himself anywhere else. His love affair with the restaurant business began in high school, and when plans to pursue a marketing career proved unfulfilling, it blossomed into a full-fledged profession. While each workday brings something new to the table, Timbrook’s responsibilities include overseeing daily operations, identifying potential challenges and fostering exceptional hospitality. Despite demanding 10-hour days, Timbrook never fails to look the part. After years of following trends, he’s built a timeless wardrobe that epitomizes his professional attitude – classic, simple and sharp. “I found a real sense of personal style in my thirties,” he says. “I’ve learned the value of getting things tailored and investing in a great suit or pair of dress shoes.” When he’s not shaking hands at the restaurant, Timbrook swaps his suits for slim, dark jeans and one of his many crisp button-down shirts. “I’m on a lifelong search for the perfect dress shirt,” he laughs. In all seriousness, this quest has led to quite the collection. When asked to divulge the contents of his closet, Timbrook has no qualms: “I have more clothes than any guy I know.”

What is your most prized possession? An original piece of art by Menelaw Sete that I picked up in Brazil while traveling in college. Ever had a fashion faux pas? I was in high school in the late ’90s so, as you can imagine, there were a few. Super baggy jeans stand out to me as my worst. I had a mullet and I had dreadlocks. It’s all very embarrassing! What are your favorite places to shop? For clothes, Nordstrom and J. Crew. For shoes, Cole Haan. Other than that, I like to check out vintage markets and local shops. Lately, I’ve been visiting Modern Manor and For the People for home decor.

or fashion and lifestyle blogger Marlene Srdic, style is at the heart of what she does day to day. Aside from her day job as editorin-chief of Life Refined, a luxury lifestyle publication, Srdic also runs a copywriting business (www.glitz-grammar.com) and a lifestyle blog (www.stylesizzle.com) where she covers everything from current fashion favorites to affordable beauty products. Her classic, feminine style comes with the territory, but Srdic isn’t one to break the bank when it comes to building a killer wardrobe. “I’ve always been into fashion, but never liked how unrealistic and inaccessible it can be,” she says. “Anyone can look good with a bottomless budget, but you can be just as stylish with the right pieces.” She certainly practices what she preaches. Since transitioning to a full-time freelancer, Srdic has embraced a much simpler style. “Jeans and a tee are anything but boring when paired with a great statement necklace or a well-tailored blazer,” she says. The blogger is also a big fan of athleisure, a trend that makes the transition from 6:30 a.m. workouts to her desk effortless. And as if anyone needed further proof of her fashion prowess, the relatively new mom to one-year-old Sebastian is now responsible for coordinating two trendy wardrobes. Her secret? “Don’t overthink it,” she says. “Kids look adorable in practically everything!” Have you ever had a fashion faux pas? Of course! If you haven’t had one, you’re not being daring enough. When was the last time you were starstruck? When I met and interviewed designer Monique Lhuillier. What are you most excited to incorporate into your wardrobe this season? I just picked up this poncho with sleeves that is fantastic. It’s such a great layering piece for our weather since it’s never quite cold enough here.

Discover the hottest new beauty treatments! Ask the specialist – Ashleigh Ortega, owner of Scottsdale’s first-ever injectable bar

What is the newest and most popular treatment you offer at Injexts? By far, it is Kybella. I can’t keep it on the shelves. Kybella is the only FDA-approved injectable treatment to permanently eliminate the double chin.

What is Kybella? Kybella is deoxycholic acid, which is naturally present in our bodies. When directly injected into the fat cells under the chin, the fat cells are permanently destroyed. Even clinical trials showed that when the participants gained weight after treatment their double chin did not return.

How many treatments and how much down time can be expected? Kybella usually takes two to three sessions but may take up to four to six sessions in certain patients. Patients can return to work and exercise the next day. Some swelling can be expected for three days to one week so planning around major life events is important.

What else is hot at Injexts? Injexts is like a drive-thru Botox service. Once you are an established client, appointments are no more than 10 minutes in length. Your Botox formula is electronically stored and drawn up just before your appointment so that when you walk in, your Botox is ready for you. You can easily grab lunch and Botox on your lunch break.

I read that you do PRP treatments. What is that? PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma treatments. Your blood is drawn from your arm and spun in a centrifuge. After 10 minutes, your plasma is separated from your white blood cells and red blood cells. Your plasma is rich with your own growth factors and other nutrients, so you can inject your plasma back into your face and body to help with fine lines, acne scarring and stretch marks, or inject the

SS_34_37HIs_HerStyle_Jan17.indd 37

plasma into your scalp in areas that have early hair loss patterns. Growth factors stimulate the hair follicle’s growth.

You are both a doctor and a nurse. Can you explain that? Absolutely! I have been a registered nurse since 1999. My background was in orthopedics at Yale-New Haven Hospital, and then I continued to assist my husband, Dr. Gil Ortega at his orthopedic trauma and hip replacement practice at Sonoran Orthopedic Trauma Surgeons in Scottsdale when we relocated 10 years ago. My passion to become a nurse practitioner (NP) was completed in 2013 after graduating from Arizona State University, which was one of the first universities to roll over from a masters-level NP program to the DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice) program. I am a Doctor of Nursing Practice. Injexts is my own practice, and I am independent from a medical doctor.

Do you have any specials this month? Yes, mention So Scottsdale! and receive 10% off any treatment or SkinMedica product. You can also buy four or more SkinMedica products and receive 25% off your purchase.

How do I book an appointment? You can download the free Injexts app or book 24/7 at www.injexts.com. If you are unsure of a treatment, book a free skin care consultation, or call us at 480.586.3789.

Injexts is located at 10201 N. Scottsdale Road at Sachi Salon Studios on the northeast corner of Scottsdale Road and Gold Dust Avenue.

here’s no doubt that January is a highly anticipated month for Valley car enthusiasts. Barrett-Jackson, deemed “The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions,” is an automotive lifestyle event unlike any other. The show draws more than 200,000 spectators to WestWorld of Scottsdale, where 386 acres of open desert will house more than 1,600 collector cars on display and will offer 2,000 pieces of authentic automobilia for auction. The 46th Annual Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction rolls back into the Valley Jan. 14-22. Barrett-Jackson was established in 1971 when gear head Russ Jackson joined forces with his friend and fellow car enthusiast Tom Barrett. The two set out to create the world’s greatest car collector event, combining quintessential pieces of American automotive history with a wealth of entertainment. Their vision turned into a reality and has grown to such a profound

level of success that it is literally the place to see and be seen. Craig Jackson grew up in the family business and now fills his father’s shoes as the company’s chairman and chief executive officer. Jackson’s impeccable attention to detail makes him a rare visionary in the car collector market, which he uses to maintain Barrett-Jackson’s prestigious reputation – and a big part of that reputation includes philanthropic efforts. “Barrett-Jackson has had its roots in helping others from the very start,” Jackson says. “For the past 46 years, through the auction of vehicles for charity at Barrett-Jackson events across the country, more than $91 million has been raised to date for worthy causes, including national charitable organizations and local causes.” Barrett-Jackson seems to outdo itself every year with an explosive array of cars and appearances by A-list celebrities. Celebrities who have attended the event in the past – including Alice Cooper, Gene Simmons and Reggie Jackson – have put some of their most prized possessions up for auction. And this year is no exception. Attendees will be graced by the man behind the microphone draped in colorful scarves: The legendary Steven Tyler of rock band Aerosmith. The lead singer of “America’s Greatest Rock and Roll Band” attending the “The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions” seems only fitting. Tyler’s band emerged on the scene in 1970 and has since performed for audiences worldwide with timeless hits like Dream On and the famous rocker ballad, I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing. Tyler’s unique vocal range and high screams have earned him the nickname “Demon of Screamin’” in the rock ‘n’ roll community. For more than 45 years, Tyler has explored all the flavors of rock ‘n’ roll, incorporating elements of blues, pop and heavy metal. Recently, though, he has been foraying into country music, and in July 2016, he debuted his firstever country and solo album. The album, We’re All Somebody From Somewhere, is Tyler’s most recent collection of songs since Aerosmith’s release of Music From Another Dimension! in 2012. Tyler’s redirection to go country was inspired by his visits to Nashville, SO SCOTTSDALE! |

Tennessee. In an interview with Rolling Stone, he mentioned that the album’s 15 songs blossomed from the magic that exudes from the Southern city. Tyler also said that the album’s cowriters, such as Chris DeStefano and Rhett Akins, contributed greatly to the finished product. Tyler introduced his album last summer with a 19-city tour called “Steven Tyler … Out on a Limb” – an appropriate name to describe the musician’s switch in sound. This year, Tyler will join Aerosmith in embarking on the band’s farewell tour, “Aero-vederci Baby!,” which will kick off in Europe May 17.

The Legend and His Car

Like the celebrities that came before him, Tyler will be auctioning off one of his prized collector cars for charity at BarrettJackson. The musician’s unique style is not only represented by his colorful outfits, but also by his exquisite taste in rare marques. The car – a 2012 Hennessey Venom GT Spyder – is the most anticipated vehicle on the event’s docket. “Steven Tyler’s car is the fifth of only 12 Venom GTs ever created and the first of the Spyder convertible. It is the convertible version of the record-setting Venom GT that recorded a top speed of

270.49 mph at Kennedy Space Center in 2014,” Jackson says. The 7.0-liter, V-8 engine produces an incredible 1,244 horsepower that blasts it from zero to 60 mph in 2.7 seconds and zero to 200 in 14.5 seconds. The car also has a custom JL Audio stereo system, befitting of a rock ‘n’ roll superstar. Tyler’s car will cross the auction block at No Reserve, with 100 percent of the hammer price benefitting Janie’s Fund, a philanthropic initiative created by the musician in partnership with Youth Villages. Tyler was overwhelmed and inspired by the thousands of letters he received from fans when Aerosmith released their 1989 song Janie’s Got A Gun, the lyrics of which describe the revenge of a girl on her abusive father. Janie’s Fund gives girls and young women broken by neglect and abuse resources to heal and restore hope. “Charity car sales create some of the most memorable moments from our Scottsdale auctions,” Jackson says. “In January 2016, we had the VIN #001 Acura NSX, benefiting the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation and Camp Southern Ground, and in 2015 we sold the VIN #001 Ford GT350R with the entire hammer price going to support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. “A world-renowned celebrity like Steven Tyler donating a car as rare and desirable as the Hennessey Venom GT Spyder will undoubtedly be the next great moment for charity cars in Scottsdale, and I’m proud that Barrett-Jackson can be a platform to support a wonderful cause like Janie’s Fund.” And, not only will the car go toward a wonderful cause, but the auction experience itself will be one of a kind. “We are very excited that Steven Tyler will be on hand to help auction his car, as well as present it to the new owner,” Jackson says. That’s right, the lucky winner will be handed the keys to their new 2012 Hennessey Venom GT Spyder convertible by Tyler himself. “This year is an action-packed nine days with something for everyone of all ages to see and do,” Jacksons says. “And we are honored and delighted to have rock ‘n’ roll legend Steven Tyler join us in Barrett-Jackson’s commitment to giving back.”

The Waste Management Phoenix Open is no stranger to awards – and last year’s tournament is no exception. The PGA TOUR awarded the 2016 Phoenix Open with two “Best Of” awards: Best Sales, for a 10.25 percent increase, and Best New Product, for the exclusive Bay Club at 17, a one-of-a-kind venue resembling a five-star resort with high-end food and beverage. Last year, the 21 suites sold out, driving more than $1.1 million in new revenue, and additional suites will open at the tournament this month. www.wmphoenixopen.com. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

EXPERIENCE

COUNTS!

Looking great may be easier than you think. “I’d really love to do something to improve my face and figure, but I”m afraid of the pain, the post operative nausea and of course the cost. Isn’t there a way that I can enhance my appearance without all the hassles of a major production?” The answer is a resounding YES! Dr Andrew Wolin has found a great way to maximize the safety of facial, breast and body procedures while minimizing the pain and the cost. By utilizing an enhanced form of local anesthesia as well as sedation by

specialists in ambulatory anesthesia, procedures such as breast augmentation, breast lifts, facelifts, rhinoplasties and liposuction can be done under a quick enhanced form of anesthesia and patients are be able to walk to their cars and go home after the procedure without nausea and pain. Part of the miraculous process is the use of a long acting local anesthetic at the conclusion of the procedure to give a 48 hour period of pain relief…no narcotic…no nausea. Patients have been raving about the experience and can’t believe they’ve ever had surgery any other way. “Dr Wolin told me that I could undergo a breast augmentation in less than one hour without general anesthetic and then get off the operating room table and walk to my car. When it actually happened, I was amazed. What a great experience.” (verified testimonial) Call our office and see if you are a candidate for this revolutionary approach to Plastic Surgical procedures. It’s as easy as going to your dentist and having dental implants done…maybe easier.

Dr. Andrew Wolin has been a leader in the plastic surgical community of Scottsdale since 1985, and his extensive years of experience benefit each patient. His top-notch reputation as a plastic and reconstructive surgeon and for cutting-edge procedures draws patients from near and far. Dr. Wolin is the Medical Director of the Wolin Plastic Surgery Center. His practice offers a full-range of face and body procedures, including facelifts, browlifts, nose surgery, facial fillers, BOTOX® Cosmetic, fat transfers, fotofacialsTM, laser skin resurfacing, ear sur- gery, SmartlipoTM, breast augmentations, breast implant/exchanges, breast reductions, breast lifts, arm lifts, bodylifts, liposuction, and tummy tucks. Dr. Wolin is located at 8415 North Pima Road, Suite 110, Scottsdale 85258. SAY CHEERS! Elevate Your Drink

Hennessy recently launched a new, sophisticated series: Master Blender’s Selection Nº1, a unique, limited-batch Cognac (i.e., only one batch is made per year). The bright amber concoction has a hint of light spice, thanks to two- to fouryear aging in French oak barrels, while the mouthfeel carries notes of grilled almonds and candied apricots. Sip as the masters do – neat in a tulip glass or on the rocks in a tumbler. And look out for more editions unveiling every year. $45-$80 depending on bottle size; available locally at select retailers such as BevMo! and AJ’s Fine Foods, plus Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, Fox Restaurant Concepts and The Gladly.

FLOCK TO THE BIRDS NEST The Phoenix Open’s music mecca packs the punch of a four-night party BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

E

ach year for four days, there is one party to rule them all in Scottsdale – in a tent and on a golf course. It’s the Coors Light Birds Nest, the entertainment hot spot at the Waste Management Phoenix Open that draws both golf enthusiasts and music lovers, whether you’re a country fan or a rock ‘n’ roll soul “In 2016, we had a headline act every night – how do you top that?” says Dillan Micus, Coors Light Birds Nest chairman. “How about with two headliners each night, transforming this into a real music festival in addition to the biggest party of the year?”

February 1 Night one is a big one for country fans, with Jake Owen and Chase Rice set to headline. A repeat performer at the Coors Light Birds Nest (2014), Owen achieved his first No. 1 hit on the country charts with Barefoot Blue Jean Night and was awarded the 2012 American Country Awards Breakthrough Artist of the Year. Rice cowrote Florida Georgia Line’s Cruise, which topped the Billboard Hot Country Songs, and has since had several other hits. February 2 The country crooners continue with Toby Keith and The Band Perry. Keith has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide and was named the Billboard Country Music Artist of the Decade in 2009. He’s had 61 singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs list, including 21 No. 1 singles. The Band Perry, comprised of siblings Kimberly, Reid and Neil Perry, released their self-titled debut album with the hit song If I Die Young in 2009, which reached No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs. February 3 Country will take a backseat Friday, with rapper Flo Rida and electro-legends Kaskade taking the stage. Flo Rida has sold more than 80 million digital downloads to date, making him one of the best-selling artists in the digital age. His catalog includes megahits Whistle and My House. Kaskade has sold more than 30 million albums and nearly 15 million digital downloads since hitting the scene in the mid-2000s. They are best known for their hit singles Every Time We Touch and Evacuate the Dance Floor. February 4 The grand finale night will both rock and roll, thanks to Blink 182 and Steve Aoki. Among the most successful punk bands of all time, Blink 182 has sold more than 35 million albums worldwide and created several popular anthems from the early-2000s musical era, including All the Small Things and What’s My Age Again. Electro-house musician and famed music producer Steve Aoki is currently the highest grossing dance musician in North America and best known for his famed collaborations with will.i.am, LMFAO, Iggy Azalea and Lil Jon. The Coors Light Birds Nest, which is 21 and over, is open daily from 3:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Headline acts will take the main stage nightly at approximately 8 p.m. General admission tickets start at $50 and VIP tickets start at $200. www.coorslightbirdsnest.com.

he Sonoran Desert will be the home of 110 highly acclaimed renowned and emerging artists from all over the world during the annual Arizona Fine Art Expo, which opens Jan. 13 and runs through March 26. The 10-week event combines the aspects of a juried fine art festival, the elements of a gallery and the inner-workings of an artist’s studio. The result is a unique experience where artists can exhibit and sell their creations while working in an art studio environment. The nature of the event allows art aficionados the opportunity to witness the creation of unique masterpieces before their eyes. Additionally, attendees can garner a deeper understanding of the creative process by interacting with the artists and asking them about their techniques and inspirations, as well as seeing them in action at their working studios. The expo is presented by the awardwinning Thunderbird Artists, who are wellknown for their role in uniting exceptional artists and for their production of fine art and wine festivals for more than 35 years. The 13-year-old event showcases a vast selection of fine art, including painting, drawing, sculpting, jewelry, ceramics and photography. There is also a two-acre sculpture garden and its Koi pond, a cafe, wine tastings, book signings, an Arabian horse quick-draw event and live music on the weekends.

Paula J. Haymond, a Texas-based wood and metal sculptor, will be participating for the first time at the expo and showcasing around 90 finished pieces. “I will bring one of my lathes and lots of hand tools to work on smaller pieces during the 10 weeks,” she says, noting that her goal is to share the stories and secrets behind her pieces with visitors. Using dyes, resin, dental burs, hand tools, metals and exotic woods, Haymond will be creating one-of-a-kind pieces, seeking to recreate the imagery of ancient cultures. “My goal for the viewer – piqued by curiosity – is to walk these paths to find their own meaning in the symbols left along the way,” she says. Haymond will also unveil a unique magnolia wood sculpture and showcase discarded brass musical instruments that she transforms from performance art into visual art. The Arizona Fine Art Expo is open every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event takes place within a 44,000-squarefoot space of white tents at 26540 N. Scottsdale Road, on the southwest corner of Scottsdale and Jomax roads, next to MacDonald’s Ranch. Season passes are $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and military. CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Jason Alford of Roka Akor BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

Under the direction of award-winning chef Jason Alford, Roka Akor specializes in contemporary robata Japanese cuisine, which uses a charcoal grill to prepare prime-cut steaks and seafood, and also offers sushi, sashimi and extraordinary desserts. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GET INTO COOKING? Honestly, my backyard. I grew up in a small town in Oregon where everyone cooked using ingredients from their own gardens. We didn’t even have snacks in the house! So, if I wanted something, I made it. HOW DID YOU MAKE YOUR WAY TO ARIZONA FROM OREGON? I moved to the Valley in 2003 to attend culinary school. But, that never actually happened! I started working at The Westin Kierland under Chef Anton Brunbauer, who soon became a mentor to me. I eventually followed him to Barcelona in Scottsdale before making the move to help open Roka Akor in 2008. By 2012, I was named the executive chef. YOU WERE ALSO NAMED SOMETHING ELSE PRETTY BIG, YES? In 2013, I was named to the inaugural edition of Best Chefs in America, which is a peer review guide of top U.S. chefs. HOW HAS ROKA AKOR MANAGED TO KEEP YOU ALL THESE YEARS? What can I say – it was love at first sight with our famous open charcoal grill. In addition, though we have locations in San Francisco and Chicago, each executive chef is given the autonomy to work with local farms, source local ingredients and dream up our own unique twists on virtually anything we choose. WHEN YOU’RE NOT COOKING, WHERE WILL WE FIND YOU? If I’m not with my family, I’m most likely playing the blues on one of my vintage instruments, which I collect, with my buddies. Roka Akor, 7299 N. CURLY TAIL Salty Sow’s serrano-infused star BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

O

ne of Salty Sow’s most popular local drinks got its start at its sister location in Austin, Texas, using a key ingredient fitting for both states: The serrano pepper. “Originally from Mexico, the serrano looks almost identical to the jalapeno, but it is much hotter. It was perfect inspiration for us and our Texas mixologists,” says Kevin Bird, general manager of Salty Sow. The serrano is used two ways in the Curly Tail ($8). First, three thin slices of the serrano are frozen inside homemade ice cubes. Then, each day, bartenders are tasked with making fresh serrano simple syrup by infusing piping hot water and sugar with 10 slices of the pepper and then marinating and chilling it overnight. “Once we prepare our peppers, we are ready to actually build the cocktail, starting with our spirit: tequila,” says Bird, noting they use 100 percent blue agave Familia Camarena Silver tequila. Both the tequila and simple syrup – which, after marinating all night, tastes like pepper-infused candy – are combined with ice in a martini shaker along with fresh blood orange puree. “Blood oranges are among the sweetest of citruses. The flavor really cuts through the heat of the pepper so we don’t overpower our guests’ palates.” The ingredients are shaken and strained over the serrano ice cube into a stemless martini glass rimmed with Applewood-smoked sea salt. The result is both spicy and sweet, while the warming effect of the tequila is a perfect finish. “We like to think of our Curly Tail as an offering that can both make toes curl and tails wag – in a good way,” Bird says. SHAUNA KANTER Lasting Impressions Captain at The Camby Hotel Years as a concierge: 5 years Favorite happy hour spots: Of course, Artizen Crafted American Kitchen & Bar at The Camby. I also enjoy Roaring Fork, Buck & Rider and Hula’s Modern Tiki. Favorite places for a date night: LON’s at The Hermosa Inn, Durant’s and The House Brasserie. Most unique restaurants: The Salt Cellar Restaurant, Monarch, Crudo and Gertrude’s at Desert Botanical Garden. Best nightlife spots: Crescent Ballroom, Kazimierz World Wine Bar, Rusty Spur Saloon, and Bitter & Twisted Cocktail Parlour. Best places to golf: We-Ko-Pa Golf Club, Rancho Mañana Golf Club, Troon North Golf Club, and Whirlwind Golf Club at Wild Horse Pass. One must-do experience in the Valley: Visit the Desert Botanical Garden. What’s the most unusual request you’ve received as a concierge? When a gentleman returned from dinner, I asked if there was anything else I could do for him. He said, “Sure, how about a lotto ticket?” I had a little spare time so I was able to buy the guest a couple of scratchers and took them to his room. He was very surprised and happy when I presented the lotto tickets to him. Best place to find an authentic Arizona souvenir: The Heard Museum Shop. Most unique way to tour the town: On a Segway or renting a bike from Grid Bike Share. What’s one of your most memorable moments as a concierge? A guest shared a childhood secret that he never had a teddy bear and was not able to attend the Teddy Bear Tea (formerly held at The Ritz-Carlton Phoenix, which occupied the building prior to The Camby). I was able to get a teddy bear and placed it in his room before he returned. Upon entering the room, he had his new “friend” there to greet him. Sure, you may have your eyes on an auto for your garage collection, but what about one for your game room? This 1959 Corvette Billiards Table is a regulation, tournament-size model with a base created from an original 1959 Chevrolet Corvette. We’re talking real chrome bumpers, a gleaming grille, and working versions of the trademark headlights, which even illuminate with a remote control. Full-size whitewall tires include genuine steel rims and chrome covers with spinners. This beauty is finished in an auto body shop with the original ’59 Roman Red and Snowcrest White paints, shellacked with automotive clear coat, and hand-buffed to shine. It will roll into your home with cues, billiard balls, and even a mock VIN and title. $25,000 at Hammacher Schlemmer, www.hammacher.com. JANUARY 2017 |

Start the new year as a new you with four spa escapes BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM

ith the new year upon us, it’s the ideal time to invest in your health and well-being. Retreat to one of these West Coast spas, where you can carve out some time to revitalize and renew your spirit for 2017.

Mii amo, a destination spa, Sedona For an escape energized by the nurturing nature of Sedona’s red rocks, book a three-, four- or seven-night, all-inclusive journey at Mii amo. Set among the magical surroundings of Boynton Canyon, Mii amo offers five unique transformative journeys rooted in different intentions. Or, you can create a customized experience. Each allinclusive package includes two daily spa services, among other activities to help you reconnect and refocus. www.miiamo.com. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

At the southwest edge of Santa Fe, Sunrise Springs Spa Resort is considered especially spiritual due to its namesake spring-fed waters, revered as a source of revitalization for centuries. The resort’s 70 acres encompass walking paths, towering trees, art and fitness studios, a spa and a restauant. The spa offers private outdoor heated pools, ideal for evening stargazing, and the casitas provide a retreat where you can relax by your own fireplace. During the days, choose from a variety of art and fitness classes, holistic workshops and spa treatments blending restorative Eastern and Western therapies. www.sunrisesprings.com.

The Spa at Paradise Point, San Diego If you prefer a beach setting, head to the tropical hideaway of The Spa at Paradise Point, tucked away on San Diego’s Mission Bay along a 44-acre island. The intimate spa at this resort feels a bit like escaping to Bali – without the long flight. The exotic treatment rooms surround an outdoor courtyard, with cool ocean breezes greeting you before you go inside. Choose from treatments that take influence from San Diego and islands around the world, such as a traditional Balinese massage or an island bliss ritual that combines exfoliation and massage with a hydrating milk bath. Back in your hotel room, gaze at ocean views, or take a dip in one of the property’s five swimming pools. www.paradisepoint.com.

The Luxury Spa, San Francisco Even if you don’t have time for a full-day spa excursion, a quick afternoon retreat can help you re-energize for the new year. The Luxury Spa at Loews Regency Hotel San Francisco is an urban oasis in the heart of the bustling city. Opt for the traveler’s tonic massage, which helps weary travelers unwind using eucalyptus aromatherapy. Afterwards, enjoy the soothing rhythm of a private, in-suite rainforest shower and sip hot green tea in the relaxation lounge, worlds away from the city below. www.loewshotels.com.

Focusing on solving the original cause of the recession first (overzealous brushing, history of periodontal disease, bruxism), and treating the affected sites with PST™ second, Dr Svans and Dr Chang have been able to provide an alternative to Gingival Recession

Correction predictably and reliably with minimal pain—the number one reason why patients and dentists dislike the Traditional approach. Pinhole Surgical Technique was designed to help those who suffer from Gingival Recession procedure that is considered the most painful procedure in Dentistry. Dr. Svans and Dr. Chang were two of the first dentists in Arizona and the United States trained and certified as Pinhole Surgical Technique™ Providers. During your Complimentary Consult, they can educate you on this amazing procedure and how they can help correct your receding gums without sutures and with mild post operative pain.

Treatment: Pinhole Surgical Technique for 5 Teeth in this patient’s Upper Arch. Procedure Time: 60 Minutes. No sutures, no pain medication ERIK P. SVANS DDS

Start your new year with a luxe spa meditation retreat BY CHELSEA YOUNG

A

fter the holiday hustle and bustle, it’s easy to feel thrown into the new year in a whirlwind. But this year, why not take a different approach and begin 2017 with a sense of serenity and ease? The Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort & Spa is helping anyone do just that with its Satori Mindfulness Meditation Spa Retreat Jan. 22-25. For the fourth year, the transformative journey will be led by meditation expert Sarah McClean, who is the founding director of the Sedona Meditation Training Company. The three-night program is designed to impart deep relaxation, balance, mindfulness and self-reflection. Sanctuary’s picturesque mountain setting and tranquil Spa House retreat are a natural complement to this wellness mission. And, you don’t need to be a meditation pro to take part; the retreat will accommodate both novices and seasoned meditation practitioners, grounded in a mantra of restarting the mind and body as the new year commences.

Events will include guided morning meditations, self-awareness exercises, mindfulness practices, emotional awareness coaching, candlelight yoga and chakra toning. The overall intention is to reduce stress while increasing vitality, self-compassion and health at all levels – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. McClean will also help attendees create their own personal meditation practice, so you can walk away from the three days with an action plan of your best times and places to practice meditation and mindfulness to achieve your desired benefits. Additionally, guests will also enjoy a total of four 60-minute spa therapies at the Sanctuary Spa, nourishing daily meals courtesy of elements restaurant, and three nights of resort accommodations. Sanctuary’s all-inclusive Satori Mindfulness Meditation Spa Retreat starts at $2,264 per person, and is limited to a group of 12. For information and reservations, call 480.624.8513 or visit www.sanctuaryoncamelback.com.

A New Year, A New You It is true that with age comes wisdom and, unfortunately, wrinkles. That is, until Valley surgeon Semone Rochlin, D.O., FACOS, introduced to her practice a revolutionary skin rejuvenation treatment: J-Plasma Skin Resurfacing. J-Plasma turns back the hands of time and is fairly new in aesthetic medicine. However, Dr. Rochlin got her hands on the innovative technology almost instantly. Her practice was one of the first in Arizona to offer J-Plasma, along with her long list of other services. “We have been offering our Scottsdale and Gilbert patients this nonsurgical technique for four months now,” Dr. Rochlin says. What makes J-Plasma different from other laser treatments, such as CO2? J-Plasma is much safer and more precise. “Unlike other laser treatments, J-Plasma leaves no lines of demarcation,” Dr. Rochlin says. J-Plasma passes an inert helium gas flow over a metal blade to produce a luminous plasma stream for the surgical effect. The luminous plasma stream, or energized gas, resurfaces and revitalizes the skin back to its youthful appearance. Dr. Rochlin’s steady artisan hands along with J-Plasma’s advance technology can eliminate wrinkles and lip lines and other common signs of aging and sun damage to the face.

J-Plasma increases the skin’s natural collagen production, which tightens and lifts skin around the eyes, lips and cheeks. It offers patients a nonsurgical alternate to a facelift and eyelid surgery – and at reasonable price. “This is one of the most profound technologies I have seen for the nonsurgical setting. It truly is a game-changer when it comes to improving the quality of skin.” What can you anticipate from treatment? J-Plasma procedures are often performed with the use of local anesthesia. Anesthesia may be unnerving to some patients, but Dr. Rochlin and her team have created an environment of privacy, safety and comfort. Most patients’ skin conditions do not require multiple treatments of J-Plasma, but instead, as Dr. Rochlin says, a “one and done” visit that takes only an hour. “Ultimately, no one likes to age. I feel very privileged to be able to make my patients feel good about themselves, and there is nothing better than that!” Dr. Rochlin strives to provide patients with a natural appearance by bringing symmetry and balance to the face in more ways than one. She accomplishes this with nonsurgical techniques like J-Plasma Skin Rejuvenation. At last, you can be wise without wrinkles. To learn more about Dr. Rochlin’s practice and book your J-Plasma Skin Rejuvenation, call 602.653.0540 or visit www.drrochlin.com.

he Audi A3 sedan arrived on the U.S. automotive scene a couple of years ago as the entry-level vehicle for the brand. Since then, Audi has launched Audi 3 versions in convertible, plug-in hybrid Sportback e-tron, and the highperformance S3 sedan tested here. Think of it as a smaller version of the popular Audi A4. For 2017, the S3 lineup got a mild appearance update: an all-new front fascia with a high-gloss grille, new Xenon headlamps, new LED taillights with sequential turn signals, and new technology and safety features. The S3 shares its performance engine – a turbocharged, direct-injection 2.0-liter, 292-horsepower four-cylinder – with its parent company’s excellent SO SCOTTSDALE! |

Volkswagen Golf R. The engine is paired with a six-speed S tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission with quattro allwheel-drive. S3 models also have larger wheels and brakes and quicker steering than the standard A3. There’s also the optional electromagnetic adaptive suspension and available 19-inch wheels with performance tires. Inside, the build quality is impressive but the materials are a mixed bag. Quilt-pattern sports seats are excellent, but they are on the firm side and operate manually for adjusting. Overall, the interior seems less Audi and more Volkswagen. There’s a newly available Audi virtual cockpit with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster to display sharp Google Maps images. The updated infotainment system includes smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Driving performance, of course, is the reason one would choose the S3 over a standard A3 sedan. While not in the same class as the upcoming 400-horsepower RS3 (set to make its U.S. debut in 2018), performance is nonetheless impressive. Zero to 60 mph is reached in just 4.7 seconds. The automatic transmission shifts quickly through the gears, up or down. Paddle shifters on the steering wheel allow for manual shifting. The driver can also toggle through the Audi drive select feature, with performance and handling settings for comfort, dynamic, automatic or individual. Choosing the dynamic setting, the powertrain increases the vehicle’s performance, with sharper steering and amplified engine acoustics. Other settings tamp down the performance, acoustics and handling. But know that the S3, even in comfort, delivers a ride that may be too firm for some. The S3 certainly won’t disappoint. But if you want to save some money, you could get a similarly equipped, but more powerful, Ford Focus RS or the nearly identical Volkswagen Golf R with a manual transmission.

Chef Josh Bracher drew inspiration from across Europe to develop the menu at Sonata’s Restaurant, including the Wood Charred Spanish Octopus ($13), a tender, smoky highlight. Bracher infuses the octopus with aromatics, wine and vegetables and then cooks it over a wood-fired grill. He pairs it with a zesty fermented hummus and coalroasted bell pepper romesco, which provides added smokiness, adorning it with garnishes of cucumber salad, fresh citrus and marinated olives. 10050 N. ong before culinary buzzwords like chef-driven, locally sourced and farm-totable existed, there was this one: tableside preparation. And though this staple of mid-20thcentury fine dining was once all the rage, over the past 25 years restaurants offering this “dinner and a show” concept of preparing one or more special menu items at tables has gone by the wayside. That is, until now. Several restaurants in the Valley are bringing this tradition back – and here are seven of our favorites.

J&G STEAKHOUSE AT THE PHOENICIAN Dish: Sauteed Dover Sole, $66 About: From the deep, frigid waters of Dover, England, celebrity chef and J&G Steakhouse founder Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s Dover Sole is presented as a whole fish, deboned tableside into delicate filets, and paired with housemade croutons. It is finished with grenobloise, a French sauce of browned butter, capers, parsley and pieces of lemon. Info: 6000 E. Camelback Road, Scottsdale; 480.214.8000; www.jgsteakhousescottsdale.com.

TORO LATIN RESTAURANT & RUM BAR Dish: La Bomba, $30 About: Before this dish even comes out, the server prepares by spreading a clear plastic sheet over your table to protect it from the chocolate bomb coming your way. Once set, a runner brings out a giant bowl made of chocolate filled with guava cheesecake mousse, lemon-lime custard, chocolate cookie crumbs, almond streusel, pistachio gelato, dulce de leche and coconut gelatos, fresh berries and edible flowers. The presentation is beautiful and vibrant, but be sure to look fast. Within seconds, the runner presents the dish and then asks the entire table to yell “La Bomba” as he or she drops it from on high, shattering it all over the table and creating chards of chocolate layered with all the other ingredients for everyone to enjoy family style. The runner then drizzles caramel, vanilla and other sauces on top as a final touch to the presentation. Info: 7575 E. Princess Drive, Scottsdale; 480.585.4848; www.scottsdaleprincess.com.

TANZY RESTAURANT Dish: Tableside Housemade Mozzarella, $18 About: This cart is all about the cheese, yet not at all cheesy. For this tableside show, a restaurant attendant starts by bringing over a cart piled high with an assortment of accoutrements: sea salts spanning truffle, fleur de sel, pink Hawaiian, black volcanic and smoked; ciabatta crostinis; basil pesto; roasted roma tomatoes; spiced figs and sliced prosciutto. Next to all of these indulgences are the mozzarella curds, which have been cooked and sieved. The attendant will then entertain the entire table by heating the curds in hot water to make them pliable, then hand-stretch the mozzarella. You can then enjoy your mozza with any and all of the garnishes you choose. Info: 15257 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.483.3255; www.tanzyrestuant.com.

Dish: Himalayan Salt Seared Ahi Tuna, $18 About: A hefty block of Himalayan salt is first heated in the oven to 500 degrees, then topped with a generous slab of ahi tuna and delivered to the table to cook to your specifications and

ROARING FORK Dish: Tortilla Soup, $8.50 About: This dish starts with the chicken, which is cooked in full view of guests on a massive rotisserie. Once ready, a bowl is prepared with garnishes and brought to the table. From there, the server stacks the housemade rotisserie chicken, slices the avocado, chops the cilantro, and adds it to the bowl right at the table. He or she then tops the dish with crispy tortilla strips and pours the broth over the ingredients, letting them soak in the flavor before serving the soup to the guest. Info: 4800 N. FAT OX Dish: Tableside Caesar Salad, $17 About: For decades, fine dining restaurants across the globe specialized in tableside Caesar salad preparation. But when Durant’s and Palm Court discontinued their tableside offerings a few years ago, it marked the end of an era. Enter Fat Ox in late 2016 – and the return of a tableside Caesar in Scottsdale. When ordered, a runner brings a cart to the table featuring white balsamic, anchovies, tomato croutons, Parmesan cheese (which is grated tableside), basil, capers and olive oil. These ingredients create the famous dressing, which is tossed tableside with gem lettuce. And yes, each guest who orders the dish is able to add or subtract ingredients to his or her specific tastes. Dish: Barrio Guacamole, $11 About: Fresh, beautiful and at the ready is how all guacamole should be served. At Barrio Queen, they do just that – with a twist. The nationally renowned guac has the addition of fresh pomegranates (or dried cranberries depending on the season) to the traditional avocado, tomato, onion, chile and lime juice concoction. BREAKFAST KITCHEN BAR Scottsdale Quarter’s newest eatery focuses on the most important meal of the day BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

t’s impossible to be all things to all people, or is it? Scottsdale Quarter’s newest gem, Breakfast Kitchen Bar, is out to prove you can please all of the people all of the time – and then some. The restaurant opened in December 2016 in the space formerly occupied by C3 Kitchen next to Grimaldi’s Pizzeria, and it was reimagined to lend a true neighborhood feel with a laid-back, yet hip, vibe and bright colors throughout. Owned by restaurateurs Sam Ashek and Samer Khairi, Breakfast Kitchen Bar features mouthwatering breakfast options as well as heartier lunch plates and a playful small bites menu, which is picture-perfect for happy hour, a girls’ night out or even date night, seven days a week. “When we created this spot, we wanted a place where people could come

to relax and make connections while enjoying super-fresh and extremely tasty dishes that are not your typical fare,” says co-owners Ashek and Khairi. Each menu boasts something for everyone from the health-conscious, to those looking to splurge, to even those with families in town, thanks to an impressive kids menu (hello s’mores waffles!) that features some healthy options too. You can also simply sit on the patio to enjoy a cup of coffee, a latte, an espresso martini or a glass of wine. Some breakfast standouts include: almond croissant French toast, a pearl SO SCOTTSDALE! |

couscous lentil breakfast bowl, and “the sea” Benedict, featuring updates to this breakfast favorite including smoked Scottish salmon and zucchini broccoli cakes. The drinks are as dazzling as the food, especially the flavored mimosas, where actual sorbets – including orange, lemon and raspberry – are added to the sparkling wines. A full cocktail menu, beer and wine are also available all day long. For late risers and the lunch crowd, Breakfast Kitchen Bar dishes out fresh salads, a selection of paninis and sandwiches, and all-natural turkey and beef burgers. Yet, where the venue really sets itself apart is happy hour. Rather than close their doors after lunch, each day after 3 p.m. the restaurant transforms into a small plates bar with more than one dozen shareable options. Most of the small plates range in price from $3 to $8 and include classic favorites such as bruschetta and charcuterie boards as well as some out-of-the-box options like potato cakes with green chili pulled pork, gluten-free avocado fries, mashed cauliflower with bacon, and grilled salmon tacos. Select breakfast items are also served all day. Breakfast Kitchen Bar is open Sunday through Thursday from 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday to Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Breakfast and lunch are served daily until 3 p.m. and small bites are served from 3 p.m. to close with happy hour specials available throughout the evening. No-Drain Tummy-Tuck Dr. Nachbar has been offering a No-Drain Tummy-Tuck since 2008 to help women who have developed bulging and looseness in their abdomen due to causes such as pregnancy or weight loss. An ordinary Tummy-Tuck requires a drain to remove fluid buildup that would otherwise occur under the tissue that has been tightened. Usually, the drain is left for two to three weeks, causing skin irritation, discomfort and an opportunity for bacteria to enter. Even when the drain is removed, fluid collection (seroma) can occur requiring needle sticks. If the drain is removed earlier than three weeks, the risk of seroma becomes greater. That is why Dr. Nachbar uses a more advanced technique, including up to 40 extra sutures to eliminate the space where fluid would collect. It is more complicated, and takes a little longer, but his patients love the no-drain tube technique. To find out if a No-Drain Tummy Tuck is right for you, call and schedule a complimentary consultation.
