JohnJay, DJ of The Morning Show with JohnJay and Rich, opens up about his hair loss and the road to regrowth You’ve heard his voice stream through your car’s speakers during your morning commute, but have you heard him talk about Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy? JohnJay, from The Morning Show with Johnjay and Rich, shares his story of hair loss, treatment, and the path ahead with a harrier head thanks to National Hair Loss. Q: Why did you seek out hair treatment? JohnJay: I was at a clothing store and I saw Al Mccoy, the announcer of the Phoenix Suns, and I asked for a picture with him. When I posted it on social media I couldn’t believe how bald I looked and all the people who posted about my baldness. Q: Describe your consultation experience at National Hair Loss? JJ: It was very informative. Carly Klein showed me where I landed on the Norwood Scale for hair loss and where I was headed with no stabilizing the loss. Then she showed me the microscopic photos of my hair, which revealed how weak my hairs were and how many could be reversed. Q: How did you know that Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) was right for you? JJ: I had done my research. Plus, I had already done PRP on my ankle, elbow and wrist and it was amazing. Q: Does PRP call for post procedure check-ups? JJ: Yes, I came in at a week and one month for check ups and then in 6 months to see where we are at insofar as the regrowth. I did an additional 5 weeks of growth factors and scalp micro-needling with Dr. Ong.
Q: Would you recommend National Hair Loss and Dr. Ong for PRP, to a friend? JJ: I have done ALL the research. ’m going to share my secret ambition, though I guess it won’t be so secret now … If I could be anything and had the talent to match, I’d choose to be a singer à la Céline Dion. Perhaps that’s why, out of my 17 issues of So Scottsdale!, this month’s feature on local bands and musicians (page 52) struck a chord with me (pun intended!) – and I hope it will do the same for you. Speaking of talent, that seems to be a theme in this issue. On our cover we have Antonio Sabàto Jr. (page 48), who many of you may recognize from his Calvin Klein ad campaigns and time on General Hospital. We got the scoop on what the model and actor is up to now, why he loves Scottsdale, and what projects may bring him here. Other talents include the athleticism of Arizona Rattlers wide receiver Kerry Reed (page 36), and Laetitia Hua, who, as Miss Scottsdale 2017, is the quintessential example of showcasing beauty from the inside out. She’s fiercely passionate about cultural diversity – and she has forayed into music, too, as a pianist. Learn more about her platform, starting on page 33. aetitia Hua has lived around the globe but her feet are firmly planted on the ground. At age 23, the Miss Scottsdale 2017 winner is fresh out of law school, with aspirations set to take on the world. But don’t let her beauty fool you; she has proven to be a fearless fighter for various human rights and a dedicated champion for a vast array of charities.

up close Laetitia grew up in the heart of Paris, the only daughter of simple restaurateurs. Despite only knowing her native Mandarin, she thrived in the artistic heart of Europe’s most romantic city. She learned the art of the perfect pastry, an appreciation for culture and found a passion for music. “I started studying piano in Paris at the age of six, which has led to a 17-year love affair with classical music,” Hua says. “At certain points in life your soul connects to things, and when I hear Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3, the whole world seems to become simplistically perfect.” Hua lived in Paris until she was eight years old, and then moved to Scottsdale, where she was again faced with an unknown language. Where previously she was celebrated for her bookworm ways, in America she was a rarity. “I was an awkward teenager and was fascinated by rules, social norms and guidelines,” says Hua, who attended Chaparral High School. “I was that person who meticulously highlighted sections of my school’s code of conduct and read etiquette books. By the time I was in middle school, I had read every book on juvenile law I could find at public libraries.” Hua didn’t know it at the time but she would soon be introduced to another world beyond the library, one that would take her into the unfamiliar scene of the pageant world. “I honestly never thought about competing in pageants, but then a friend asked me to try it with her. We were both new to it and had no idea what we were doing. Yet, a few months later I beat out 80 other girls for the title.” Starting at age 14, her rise through the pageant ranks was not easy or even natural for the braces-wearing adolescent, but with her talent, she shined on stage. “I remember one phase of that first competition was casual wear, and we were encouraged to wear an outfit with accessories that represented us,” she says. “I modeled on stage with my violin that I had named Brownie. I was up there looking out into the audience, and I felt this connection. I’ve been hooked to pageantry ever since.”
Since then, Hua has gone on to win several pageants, including Miss Scottsdale, and with it, the opportunity to compete for Miss Arizona in June. Still, as a frequent fighter for women’s rights she’s often faced with criticism. “People still sometimes call it a ‘beauty pageant’ but pageantry has evolved to be much more than physical beauty. The Miss America system, for example, is the largest scholarship provider for women, and they really focus on talent and academic achievement.” In fact, Hua says her favorite parts of the pageant experience are just that: interview and talent, two areas in which she scores the highest. “I always enjoy having conversations with the judges during interview, particularly on international trade law and foreign policy.” Not to be held back, Hua recently graduated from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. Today, Hua is back in Arizona to study for the bar exam.
A Platform for Diversity In her last year of law school, Hua became particularly fascinated with international law and gender law. Building on her interests in gender issues, she hopes to pursue international human rights law and address human rights violations on a global scale. community to honor diversity. “I’m currently working with the Human Relations Commission to promote diversity. I’ve personally experienced racism and particularly in this politically divisive time, I would like to do everything I can to be a voice of unity in my community.” Hua also serves as an ambassador for Children’s Miracle Network, helping to raise money for children at local hospitals. And, because she grew up speaking three languages (Mandarin, French and English), Hua is naturally passionate about secondary language development. “I will be helping to promote the Seal of Bi-literacy, which rewards high school students who attain proficiency in a language beyond English. I think proficiency in multiple languages is so important in today’s globalized world.” As the first Asian Miss Scottsdale, Hua is also committed to bringing more diversity to the Miss America stage, while creating more overall cultural acceptance worldwide. Her platform rings true to who she is – someone who values the differences among us, yet also acknowledges the humanity that we all share. erry Reed grew up in the rough and tumble inner city of Miami. Raised by a single mom and surrounded by his numerous siblings, he quickly became the “man of the house” – the role model and protector. It was only when he was introduced to football that he was truly ever able to let loose. “I fell in love with the game the moment an older cousin put that pigskin in my hand,” Reed says. “From that day, I dreamed of following in the footsteps of my favorite players and making it big some day.” Reed, who played football at Michigan State University, happened to be one of the few who got selected for the NFL draft. He was a free agent for the Miami Dolphins and then went on to play for the Baltimore Ravens for one season. Following his time in the NFL, he transitioned into the arena football realm, first playing for Canada’s BC Lions before being picked up by the Arizona Rattlers, where he has been indispensible since the 2011 season. “I count myself lucky that I get to do what I love on a daily basis and make a living off of it,” he says. “I also get the opportunity to interact with fans and be the role model that I aspire to be.”

Tell us about the organizations you work with and why that’s important to you. I love working with the Boys & Girls Clubs because it’s an organization I remember growing up with. I love being able to interact with the kids and be an inspiration in their lives. I’m a big kid at heart, too, so it’s nice to spend time with them and let my inner kid out from time to time. Who are your role models? Jerry Rice has always inspired me. He’s a class act and always carries himself in a positive way – on and off the field. I also look up to Larry Fitzgerald. s the charity director of Platform Scottsdale – a women’s group dedicated to connecting, promoting and inspiring women – Meredith Hawkins raises funds for local charities through the organization’s signature events. “I love giving small, local, woman-run charities a platform to help promote them and enable them to help people through their organizations,” Hawkins says. Hawkins’ passion for social work has been a constant throughout her life. “I have always wanted to help those less fortunate, and the area of social work has given me the platform and access to opportunities to make a difference.” In March 2012, her passion to help others ignited the creation of her own charity organization: Girls who Inspire, Volunteer and Empower (GIVE), a women’s volunteer group, made up of those looking to give back in the community. “I started GIVE to create a volunteer calendar of events where those in our community can sign up for volunteer opportunities, making it easy, fun and impactful,” Hawkins says. Truly, GIVE’s mission is evident in all that Hawkins does – making a difference in the lives of others through time, dedication, donations and unconditional love.

former player in the world of corporate finance, Scott Burdick has since tapped into his creative side as managing partner and co-owner at Wiseman and Gale Interiors, a luxury residential design firm. As one of two men in an office of 20, Burdick’s wardrobe choices are under a fair bit of scrutiny. “To a small degree, my style is a reflection on my company, so I try to keep it pretty pulled together,” he says. “It needs to be professional, stylish, semiconservative and comfortable.” Though he’ll opt for jeans and a crisp blazer nine times out of 10, Burdick’s sharp, streamlined style proves that having a uniform doesn’t necessarily correlate with predictability. “I’m uninspired by things that look overdone, too coordinated and too thought out,” he says. “I prefer the unexpected.” His outfits come together organically, thanks to a closet full of timeless, versatile pieces from Carolina Herrera and Italian designers like Prada and Brunello Cucinelli. And while Burdick isn’t keen on shopping, there is one exception he’s willing to make. “Since I was a kid, I have loved Il Bisonte Italian leather,” he says. “When I’m traveling, I’ll make that a destination for sure.”

When I buy shoes, there is no limit; I go for super high-quality and conservative, and I wear them into the ground. With jeans, my eyes get used to the way I look in the same pair. Changing styles can be traumatic, so I stick to the same one or two. What will we never find you wearing? Sunglasses. I feel like they block my vision. What is the last movie you watched? I Am Love starring Tilda Swinton. This isn’t the last movie I’ve watched, but it’s noteworthy because it sends me into orbit – so incredibly stylish.

hen she isn’t tackling Alzheimer’s disease alongside her favorite charity, BvB Phoenix, Brittany Barnett plays her hand at fashion, an art that comes second nature to the promotional event specialist. “I love observing how other people piece things together,” she says. “I could be wearing the exact same outfit as someone else, but depending on how we accessorize, we might look completely different. That’s what I love about fashion. You make it your own!” For Barnett, this means Minnetonka fringe boots, curve-hugging Levi’s and steals from Poor Little Rich Girl, her favorite local boutique. Her effortless bohemian wardrobe percolates with adventure and creativity, a charming glimpse into the life of the quintessential girl next door. “My mother always tells me I was ‘boho-chic’ before it became a thing,” she laughs. “But I just wear what I like. Where can we find you on your day off and what are you wearing? My goal this year is to learn how to golf! So, either on the golf course wearing lululemon, tennis shoes and a polo, or riding around in Chuck Taylors and a loose T-shirt. any will remember Antonio Sabàto Jr.’s jet black hair and deep dimples, especially from the time he exploded onto the fashion scene as a Calvin Klein model. Yet, many may not know his story as a child emigrating from Italy to the U.S., and many probably do not know about his ties to Arizona. His story is one of hard work and the pursuit of a dream. Sabàto’s parents, Antonio Sabàto Sr. and Yvonne Kabouchy, believed that for Sabàto and his sister Simonne to have the best opportunities, they needed to move the U.S. Saving their money, the Sabàtos left Italy and moved to Los Angeles in 1985 to begin a new life when Sabàto was 13. Sabàto proudly recalls his time assimilating to a new culture and a new life. “It was exciting and scary,” Sabàto says. “I’ll never forget it. I didn’t speak the language. My parents both worked two jobs. We stayed together as a family. We loved being here and wanted to be a part of this country.” Sabàto’s father was an actor in Italy and starred in many movies, most notably the 1966 Oscar-winning film Grand Prix. In that movie, Sabàto Sr. was coached by Phoenix’s very own legendary race car driver, Bob Bondurant. Sabàto grew up watching his father’s career and was inspired to be an actor himself. “My father was an actor, and I fell in love with it as a little boy,” Sabàto says. “I grew up watching musicals and wanted to be like Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire.” Sabàto took acting classes and performed on stage, trying to show his parents how much he wanted to be an actor. “My parents helped, but at first my dad didn’t want that for me,” Sabàto explains. “I had to show him how much I wanted it.” Once his father realized how much Sabàto longed to be an actor, he helped him whenever opportunities were made available.
BREAKING INTO THE INDUSTRY Sabàto’s first big break came as a Calvin Klein underwear model in 1990, appearing on a 90-foot-tall billboard in New York City’s Times Square, as well as around the world. Sabàto remembers seeing himself blown up to gigantic proportions in Times Square.

“I used to live in New York, struggling,” Sabàto says. “I used to walk past the billboards. It was really surreal and cool and exciting.” Sabàto’s next gig was appearing in Janet Jackson’s music video for Love Will Never Do Without You, shot by famed photographer Herb Ritts. Sabàto would work with Ritts again in the second of three Calvin Klein campaigns he appeared in, and he developed a deep respect for Ritts’ expertise. “He [Ritts] was the biggest photographer at the time,” Sabàto recalls. “He was a great man, a genius. He was soft-spoken, bright, and knew what he
wanted to shoot and how to shoot it. He knew exactly how it was going to be. He’s missed in the fashion world.” On the heels of Jackson’s music video, Sabàto joined the cast of the soap opera drama General Hospital from 1992 to 1995 as the character Jagger Cates. He also was a part of the science fiction series Earth 2 and the nighttime soap opera series Melrose Place. Looking back at his early modeling career and comparing it to today’s industry, Sabàto believes social media has had a huge impact on the fashion industry. “We didn’t have all the technology
and social media,” Sabàto says. “I was the first model to have tattoos. Then it was different; today it doesn’t matter. Fashion has changed because of social media. It was simple, and now there’s too much competition. It’s hard to keep up because everything moves so fast.”
CURRENT ENDEAVORS Sabàto has steadily continued to appear in many TV series, movies and reality shows. In 2014, he was in both Dancing with the Stars (DWTS) and Fix it & Finish It, a reality TV series in which Sabàto and his renovation team surprised home owners

and renovated a space in their home. On DWTS, he was partnered with Cheryl Burke, and together, they lasted seven rounds. When asked if DWTS was easier or harder than he expected, he admits it was a little bit of both. “Cheryl Burke was a great coach,” he says. “I loved the training. But I was doing two shows at once and traveling the country doing both. I’m amazed I lasted two months.” Sabàto enjoyed his experience on DWTS and took away many positive lessons. “The dancers and people I had a chance to compete against were phenomenal,” he says. “Being under pressure, you really want to stick around and be on the next week. We fought hard, and we had an amazing fan base. I learned a lot about integrity and professionalism under pressure.” Today, Sabàto has a number of projects that keep him busy. One is his clothing line, Pirata della Strada, an activewear line for men and women. He’s also very passionate about health and anti-aging, and has been busy with speaking engagements promoting anti-aging, health techniques and products. “I like to motivate people and help them with anti-aging, fitness, health and wellness,” Sabàto says. Sabàto’s career has brought him back and forth to Arizona several times. His first experience in Arizona was for the 1991 filming of his second movie in Scottsdale, originally titled Fuga da Kayenta, also known as Arizona Road. He also spent time in Tucson filming Fix it & Finish It. His newest project, which may bring him back to Arizona, is another creative endeavor. He’s working on a manuscript for a dark thriller titled Exit 187 and anticipates its completion soon. “Arizona is one of my favorite states,” Sabàto says. “It’s my other home. I enjoy the weather, and I enjoy the people.” Scottsdale is an especially favorite city. “I love the city,” he says. “It’s so clean and beautiful, and there is so much to do. The Waters With a poetic grace in their lyrics and melodies, The Waters – comprised of singer/ songwriter and rhythm guitarist Krystal Baker and guitarist Sturgis Waters – are a duo self-described as “where love and music collide.” Not only have they been playing together for 16 years; they’ve been married for 10 of those. Their acoustic sound has roots in folk and rock with elements of ethereal textures, amplified by Baker’s haunting vocals juxtaposed with Waters’ colorful guitar melodies. Playing both original songs as well as unique arrangements of other artists, their love of music is evident and provides a universal connection for audiences. Simply put, The Waters believe in the power of music, stating, “We do what we do because we can’t afford therapy, and because it’s the best job in the world, even when it’s not.” The duo can be seen every Wednesday at Center Stage at Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Gainey Ranch and most weekends at Arizona Biltmore or jade bar at Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort and Spa. Jacob Morris Though only 19 years old, Jacob Morris recalls the sound of a seasoned country crooner. Taking influences from artists like Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard and Alan Jackson, he seeks to make music reminiscent of those who have laid the path of country music before him, music that is a foot in the past and also a step into the future. With a comfortable mix of modern and traditional sounds, Morris’ music is very story-oriented; the singer says he fell in love with country music at a young age because the songwriters were storytellers at heart. Now, as a musician himself, Morris wants those who hear his music to feel the experience of where a song came from or why it was written. He says, “I make music for a higher purpose. Getting a response from a fan who has received a song of yours on a much more personal level is the most gratifying thing an artist can experience. I’m addicted to that feeling, and I’ll continue to chase it.” You’ll find him performing at The Montauk on Wednesday nights and Sunday afternoons, as well as other East Valley locations including Whiskey Row.

House of Stairs With music that’s irrevocably jazz, House of Stairs also draws from funk, soul, electronic and pop influences to create a distinct progressive sound. Because their music is so multifaceted, it has been described as an “aural, visual and emotional Rubik’s Cube.” Others call it chamber soul or Erykah Badu meets Radiohead. Regardless of label, there’s no doubt House of Stairs is a one-of-a-kind collective – their instrumentation is unique (there is no guitar or bass guitar); they play in every meter, from three to 13; and vocalist Holly Pyle loops her vocal harmonies live. The result toggles the line between art and music while weaving in poetry, generating an imaginative exploration in sound that the band hopes will serve as inspiration for people to be their authentic selves and seek out what they most desire in life. LUXXE You might recognize this five-member band if you attended last month’s Bon Jovi concert at Talking Stick Resort Arena; LUXXE was selected as part of a contest through Live Nation to be the opening act for the rock band. Consisting of Seth Smades, lead vocalist and acoustic guitarist; Devon Quartullo on drums; Nullin Hassan on keys; Michael Gessert on lead electric guitar; and Evan Yuen on bass guitar, the selfdescribed “Americana pop folk” group takes inspiration from bands like One Republic and The Lumineers. Their debut EP, Rolling Thunder, which contains five original songs is currently out, though their live performances are what captivates fans and embodies who they are as artists. Dubbed high-energy, the group diversifies their sound when in front of an audience, characteristically playing songs that range from acoustic ballads to high-energy rock, and sometimes even flute solos. Sincerely Collins Though Sincerely Collins is known for his hip-hop sound, he draws inspiration from all genres. Exposed to oldies and smooth jazz by his grandparents while growing up, the artist fuses those sentimental sounds with his love of authentic pop records and alternative music to create a genre all his own. Sincerely Collins emerged on the scene with his single Light Work, which hit No. 1 on Phoenix’s Power 98.3 and 101.9, and his new single, Possible, is following close behind. The 15-year songwriting veteran takes inspiration from his life and translates his experiences into his work, saying, “Music was there for me in the darkest of times, and music has now blessed me with a life that others dream of.” And now Sincerely Collins is paying it forward – you can often find the meditator and vegan giving motivational speeches and seminars at local Valley high schools. When he’s not inspiring people with his speeches, you can typically find him inspiring them through his lyrics at Livewire or Marquee Theatre.

The Breaking Pattern In 2015, The Breaking Pattern emerged and was immediately welcomed with high praise from fans and critics alike. In fact, the four-person band (vocalist Derek Hackman is pictured) has been dubbed the face of the emo revival movement in Phoenix, with a flair for fusing flowery, introspective lyrics with melodic guitars and ambient sounds. Described as atmospheric pop, The Breaking Pattern incorporates hyper-poetic language, a signature part of their sound that lends a thoughtful element and speaks to the soul. It’s this space – where poetry meets melody – that has garnered them such a cult-like following and accolades from the likes of The Huffington Post. When asked why they do what they do, Hackman’s poetic nature is found in his answer. “It just feels good to contribute to a culture I love through a community that accepted me. If I can successfully convey an idea that someone else is struggling to express, then I have succeeded in my responsibility as an artist.” Find them taking the stage at The Rebel Lounge, Pub Rock Live, Crescent Ballroom, Valley Bar, FiftyOne West, Nile Theater, and many of the all-ages venues.

Upsahl Singer and songwriter Taylor Upsahl – who goes by the stage name Upsahl, which also serves as the name of her band – seemed destined to be a performer. With a father in the local music scene, 18-year-old Upsahl got her start at an even younger age; by the time she was a junior at the Arizona Academy of the Arts, she’d already headlined Crescent Ballroom. Upsahl recently released Unfamiliar Light, an evolved alternative album, though her sweet, soulful sound has also been described as poppy indie-folk with a maturity well beyond her youth. Upsahl writes about complex situations, resulting in relatable content that continues to intrigue audiences. And in her lyrical creations, she finds solace for herself. “No matter what hardships or challenges I’m dealing with or how stressed I am, music is always my source of stability and comfort,” she says. “I think that this goes to show the power that music has and its ability to impact people in such a crucial way.” Upsahl will hit the road on a West Coast tour this summer, but you can frequently find them at Crescent Ballroom, Valley Bar and The Rebel Lounge.

Guests can book a two-hour session for up to four people with one of the observatory’s professional astronomers. Sierra Vista also happens to be the official Hummingbird Capital of the United States, and home to more than 250 species of migrating and nesting birds. Free, guided bird walks along the San Pedro River are offered twice each week. The Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory also conducts hummingbird research and banding (a way to measure the birds’ migration) between April and September. C
onnecticut native Emily M. Randolph has developed one-of-a-kind mixed media fine art rooted in photography, yet her work goes beyond the medium as most people know it. Even though Randolph began creating her unique art four years ago, her entire career trajectory laid out a map in preparation for her artistic journey. Prior to being a full-time artist, she worked in marketing, communications, writing and design for both magazines and home interiors. After living in the U.K. and Germany, she moved to Scottsdale where she worked as an author and graphic designer for a children’s photo-illustrated book series called The Phoe-Phoe Series that was commissioned by The Phoenician. With a creative background and an early love for photography, Randolph wanted to do something different with her printed photographs – and she refused to spend all her time in front of a computer working on digital layers of montages. “That was my major motivation in looking beyond the printed photographs,” she says.
Considering different angles, Randolph started experimenting with resin and utilizing materials that she loves, including fire glass, tile, mica, rocks and natural elements. “I wanted to take photography to a whole new level, literally elevating it to a new dimension,” says Randolph, who

strives to create transformative art that enlivens its environment and lifts the spirit. Adding those elements to DiBond aluminum or canvas, she converts printed photographs into abstract 3-D pieces of fine art with a hand-finished texture and glass-like effect. When asked about the aesthetic of her work, Randolph states that it is elegant, sophisticated and sometimes playful. “I have a major love affair with color and glass,” she says, also admitting her obsession for water. “I see water in a lot of things where you normally wouldn’t find water.” Her passion for vivid colors and water come across in her work, as well as other childhood inspirations such as flowers from English gardens and markets and mythical dragons. Her passion to create layered mixed media art might have started as a way to be away from the computer and be hands-on with her photographs, but now, it is as natural as breathing for Randolph. “It’s a calling,” she says. “It’s addictive. Once you know you can do something, you have to do it. And it brings me a lot of joy.” The best part for Randolph is that there are no rules and no limits; sometimes she has a very specific vision in mind, while other times, she lets serendipity be part of her process. Randolph recently exhibited her art at the 27th Annual Celebration of Fine Art in Scottsdale. She also has a permanent art installation of more than 150 pieces on display at Westminster Village in Scottsdale. In recent months, Chef Chuck Kazmer took the reins of the Four Seasons’ awardwinning haunts: Talavera, Proof, Saguaro Blossom Poolside Grill, and Onyx Bar & Lounge, as well as all food and beverage service throughout the conference and banquet facilities. Learn a little more about this Valley newcomer’s culinary prowess. You’re new to the Valley, but not the Four Seasons brand? I’ve been with the Four Seasons for 25 years – most recently at the Four Seasons Hotel Amman in Jordan, overseeing seven kitchens and eight restaurants, including one I built from the ground up, from the kitchen to the Kobe beef. How did you get your start? I always had a knack for cooking. My dad actually supported me, telling me “at least you’ll never go hungry, Chuck.” My first real kitchen job was for the Four Seasons in Austin, Texas, while I was in culinary school, where I worked as an apprentice for more than three years. I can still remember standing in their 38-degree kitchen deboning 400 or more chickens nightly for our guests. I also had stints at the Four Seasons in Boston, Dallas, Houston and Chicago while I worked my way up.

What are some of your favorite ingredients to use? That all depends on the season, but I love fresh mushrooms, especially those native to where I am working. In Jordan, we had a desert truffle to work with that tasted almost like a fancy sunchoke. Finding cool local ingredients is really my passion, and something I really want to do here in the Valley. arigold Maison Executive Chef Sunil Kumar is known for taking authentic, spicy Indian flavors and kicking them up a notch with innovative twists on the classics, including chicken tikka, samosas and his award-winning tandoori oven delicacies. “From curry to cumin, the flavors Chef Kumar develops are as big, bright and bold as he is,” says Rob Holder, director of beverage and brand development at Marigold Maison. “Developing cocktails to complement – but not compete – with these flavors is a challenge, but one our Blossom Martini is more than up for.” The Blossom Martini ($11) puts a balanced, refreshingly floral spin on the standard vodka-based libation, developed to pair with Kumar’s spicier dishes. “We start with Grays Peak Vodka,” Holder says. “It’s our preferred choice because it’s distilled five times via a proprietary reverse osmosis process, removing any trace minerals.” The gluten-free vodka is then combined with Bols Elderflower. “Bols has the perfect balance in sweetness and alcohol content, and the flavor really ramps up when we add fresh lemon and grapefruit juices into the mix,” Holder says. Holder then shakes the ingredients and strains the concoction into a martini glass, which is then topped with Peychaud’s Bitters. “Slightly sweeter and less biting than traditional bitters, Peychaud’s provides an earthy zest that complements the grapefruit tang and brings the entire cocktail together.” Marigold Maison, 4720 E. Niagara Falls Established in 1885, Niagara Falls State Park spans 400 acres along the Niagara River and, of course, the magnificent falls. Three waterfalls make up Niagara Falls – Horseshoe, American and Bridal Veil falls – and you can view all three from the U.S. side of them (in New York) without crossing into Canada. The best first view is from Terrapin Point, looking down on Horseshoe Falls. The historic overlook was restored in summer 2016. You can then board the Maid of the Mist, originally launched in the 1800s as a scenic boat tour and still one of the most thrilling experiences at Niagara Falls. Cultural History One of the best places to explore Niagara’s rich cultural history and get a look at the countryside is to drive 20 minutes north to Old Fort Niagara. Located on the shores of Lake Ontario, Fort Niagara was originally established as French Fort Conti in 1679. It has been under French, British and U.S. flags during its time in service. Now fully restored, it offers visitors a chance to step back in time, experiencing a soldier’s life during the 18th and 19th centuries. The 363-mile long Erie Canal was the first transportation system to run from New York City to the Great Lakes. Head to Lockport, about 35 miles east of Niagara, to take an excursion on Lockport Locks & Erie Canal Cruises. The two-hour cruise takes you through five of the original locks, including Locks 34 and 35, the only double set on the Erie Canal. While
you watch, 3 million gallons of water fill the locks, raising the boat 50 feet.
Wine Tasting The countryside around Niagara Falls sits on the shores of Lake Ontario. With its cool climate (but long days during growing season), there are some great wines in this unique place, including lovely pinot noirs. Dining and Lodging If you can pull yourself away from the natural beauty, there are amazing places to eat in Niagara. Book dinner reservations at Savor, a fine dining restaurant inside the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute. Savor provides students a hands-on learning experience where you’ll enjoy dishes prepared with ingredients sourced from local farmers. Nearby Lewiston is a charming village filled with boutiques and shops, and food is plentiful for such a tiny town. Afternoon lunches are ideal on the patio at Water Street Landing – order the crab cakes to start. A favorite dinner spot along Center Street is Carmelo’s, which serves rustic Italian cuisine. Though Chef Carmelo Raimondi changes the menu daily, the housemade pastas are a must. After all the activities and aliments, head to The Giacomo, a luxury boutique hotel in the old United Office Building in downtown Niagara. The building and its 41 hotel rooms, constructed in 1929 art deco style, is on the National Register of Historic Places. lmost everything about Lexus’ new flagship coupe screams “irresistible.” Inspired by the 2012 Lexus LF-LC concept car, the LC 500 and LC 500h (a hybrid version) have presence and savoir faire that are nearly off the charts. At the recent media introduction of the all-new Lexus LC500 on the Big Island of Hawaii, Lexus executives made it clear that their objective is for “boring” and Lexus to never be associated. The new LC has set a new demarcation that clearly separates the brand’s future design language from the past. Styling begins with the best execution yet of Lexus’ signature spindle grille. Triple-stacked LED Polaric Ellipsoid System headlamps about the size of a deck of playing cards are the most compact, high-density design on any production car to date. The front fenders are nearly nonexistent, with 20-inch wheels that practically breach the dramatically long, wide and low hood. Inside, the LC 500 is equally gorgeous, with a stitched leather dash and center console, plus leather seats with optional hand-sewn Alcantara inserts. The LC 500 is built on Lexus’ new front engine, rear-drive global architecture that will also be used for the upcoming LS flagship sedan. It’s powered by a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter, 471-horsepower V-8 engine and 10-speed automatic transmission. A push of the button brings to life the satisfying mellifluous exhaust notes. Performance, as expected, is fast, instantaneous and, of course, fun. Zero to 60 mph takes just 4.5 seconds. Handling is spectacular with a firmly sprung suspension; even twisty Hawaiian mountain roads were handled confidently with poise and assurance. If your interest is piqued, act fast. Lexus says just 400 units per month will be available when the LC 500 and LC 500h go on sale next month.

B
elieve it or not, while they certainly popularized it, pirates did not, in fact, invent rum. It was actually 17th-century sugar farmers in the Caribbean with far too much residual molasses on their hands after harvesting sugar who developed the first process to distill rum. Today, rum sales in the U.S. are north of $2 billion per year alone. So, before your next afternoon poolside, brush up on your rum lore about three brands that helped the spirit succeed and make it a warm-weather favorite.
Captain Morgan Among the most popular brands is, of course, Captain Morgan. Originally developed and distributed out of the Caribbean island of Jamaica and named in honor of 17th-century pirate lord Captain Henry Morgan – one of the most notable pirates of all time – Captain Morgan has grown to be the second largest spirit brand in the U.S. The brand’s taste is achieved through a proprietary recipe, which is blended into the rum mixture at the final stages of production, making use of spices indigenous to the Caribbean. In recent months, the brand has expanded its portfolio, launching its newest product, Captain Morgan Loconut ($14.99), which blends real coconut
liqueur with rum and spices, perfect as a spring mixer of beach-infused flavor.
Don Q Like Caribbean islanders, Puerto Rican farmers also saw the benefit of recycling molasses into rum. Don Q, the region’s most popular brand, started with Don Juan Serrallés, who transformed his family’s small sugar cane business into rum more than 150 years ago. Using a pot still he imported from France, he produced the first casks of rum sold under the Serrallés name, laying the foundation for the Don Q legacy and also for Puerto Rico to become a world leader in rum production. Today, sixth-generation Serrallés distiller Roberto continues his family’s legacy with a variety of sustainably produced expressions, including the Gran Añejo ($59.99), a luxury rum that contains a blend of rums aged between nine and 12 years and Solera rums aged up to 50 years. Zacapa The town of Zacapa was founded in 1876 as a bustling railroad stop in Guatemala. Zacapa’s first formal rum product was initially developed in 1976 as a centennial-themed spirit distilled from the first pressing of sugar cane, which is called the “virgin honey,” and is cultivated in the fertile, volcanic soil of the Guatemalan coast. Over the past 40 years, Zacapa’s premium rum products have won awards across the globe and run the gamut of flavors, from butterscotch to oaky. Among their most impressive varietals is the Zacapa XO Rum ($99.99), which has notes of dark cherry chocolate, dried fruits and sweet oak spices. In fact, it is often called the “cognac of rums” and is almost always only taken neat, so as not to cloud the intense flavor.

While the property retains the Mountain Shadows name in homage to the original resort and golf course first founded on the land in 1959 – which even predates the incorporation of Paradise Valley itself – the sleek new space was masterfully conceived for today’s guests and built from the ground up, with no expense spared. No-Drain Tummy-Tuck Dr. Nachbar has been offering a No-Drain Tummy-Tuck since 2008 to help women who have developed bulging and looseness in their abdomen due to causes such as pregnancy or weight loss. An ordinary Tummy-Tuck requires a drain to remove fluid buildup that would otherwise occur under the tissue that has been tightened. Usually, the drain is left for two to three weeks, causing skin irritation, discomfort and an opportunity for bacteria to enter.
