o Paris Salon features the lavish, luxurious surroundings you would expect in any upscale locale, but there’s a crucial difference within the welcoming atmosphere, suffused with a familial warmth that puts you instantly at ease. And the differences don’t end there; in every facet of the experience is the evidence of a deeply connected team, each member striving to provide premium-quality services and unforgettably gracious treatment. The salon is the kind of place its owner and namesake, Jo, had always dreamed of opening. With an innate sense of beauty and talent, he began his career in Paris mentored by France’s most celebrated stylists. After moving to Cannes, Jo quickly gained an illustrious reputation as the premier stylist of the Cannes Film Festival, where he spent a decade styling celebrity clientele. But it was another move, this time to Arizona, that led him to open Jo Paris Salon – and the Valley has never looked better. We sat down with Jo to find out a few things about his salon, his stylists, and which products he can’t live without. Q: Your salon has quite a sizeable staff. How do you choose your stylists? A: I make sure that we don’t have a revolving door of stylists. We try to make sure we hire stylists with years of experience who add something to the team. Everyone has a specialty, and we try to showcase that strength – we are one of the few salons that can accommodate just about any client with any kind of hair. Q: So you have specialists for every need? Amazing! What services do you offer? A: We offer almost anything. Color, cuts, extension, ombre, balayage, perms, relaxer, keratin treatments, updos and Olaplex. We offer services to men, women, and children. We also have an amazing aesthetician and offer Microblading. Q: With such a variety of services, you must use a lot of products. Are there certain lines you swear by? A: We use four different styling lines. The most prestigious line we offer, and we are incredibly proud to have, is Oribe – they’re the best products I have ever used. They are specially formulated for every hair type and super-concentrated. I’m not sure I have ever used an Oribe product on my client and they aren’t absolutely in love with their hair. The smell alone keeps people coming back, but it really does what it says it will do. For curly hair, we are also a Ouidad salon. Our color
line, Goldwell, is the only one that actually has hair preserving protein in the color itself. It’s easy to work with, true to tone color that lasts much longer than most. It’s also one of the few color lines that we found to be friendly for people with sensitive skin or color allergies. We also happen to have our own in-salon Goldwell educator as part of our staff, so the education we get for color trends makes us experts in the line. Q: Do Jo Paris Salon stylists participate in any other continuing education? A: Yes. You never stop learning, and we try to expand our knowledge. The staff is constantly choosing to learn new things and stay ahead of the trends. They love what they do, and it shows! Q: Your friendly, hospitable service makes everyone feel comfortable. Why is that important to you? A: Everyone deserves to be pampered. We do have some very prominent clients, but we also have everyday regular people. I wanted to make a place where someone could come in as they are, have a cup of coffee and maybe make a friend while doing it. Our guests can expect that every experience they have with us will be a great one, from their very first visit.

The office buzzes with ringing phones and cheerful voices against a backdrop of bright orange and turquoise walls, tall cacti in glossy white pots, and the backdrop of Camelback Mountain. In this sunny, open-concept space, the clicking of keyboards can be heard as orders are processed and customers are served.
But, this is not your traditional e-commerce company taking orders and shipping goods; this is DollarDays. And at the other end of the phones are hundreds of nonprofits, schools, churches and other charitable organizations trying to do the most good within their often-limited budgets.

Pulse UP CLOSE Behind the growing success of this unique e-commerce enterprise is Shelly Chaney, DollarDays’ vice president of merchandising and marketing. Chaney, who is fairly new to the realm of disaster-relief supplies, hygiene kits and back-to-school drives, began her 17-year career in the glam world of high-end fashion. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Arizona State University and obtaining a master’s degree in education from National University, the Phoenix-area native moved from Scottsdale to Los Angeles in 2000. There, she founded Couture Marketing, a consulting firm specializing in e-commerce launches, ad campaigns and marketing initiatives for clients including AG Jeans, BCBG Max Azria, Ella Moss, J Brand, Kelly Wearstler, Linea Pelle, and Splendid. For eight years, she also served as vice president of marketing and e-commerce for Michael Stars, a renowned designer T-shirt company. “It was an incredibly fast-paced and exciting time in my life, full of runway shows, photo shoots, store launches, fashion magazines and events,” Chaney says. “There’s something magical about the blending of art, fashion and form into one, but I always felt like I was missing out on something more rewarding, too.” In her search for change and a new challenge, Chaney would leave the LA fashion scene and return to Arizona, where she was introduced to a company called DollarDays. She was immediately drawn to the wholesaler, which touted a business model built on giving back to the community while helping charities obtain bulk goods for their service projects, outreach missions and other events. In December 2015, Chaney became part of the DollarDays team and hasn’t looked back since. “Joining DollarDays helped me find the perfect way to combine my passion for marketing and fashion with my love for giving back to my community. I can’t picture myself working anywhere else.” Since then, Chaney has helped to grow the company into one of the best-kept secrets for schools, nonprofits, churches and thousands of small businesses seeking to purchase in bulk at wholesale costs. “One of the most gratifying experiences I’ve had in my career happened [in fall 2017], when we were working with Good360 to help victims after hurricanes Harvey and Irma,” Chaney says. “We donated more than $30,000 and helped our partners by utilizing our warehousing network to ship and deliver items like cleaning supplies, hygiene kits and home essentials to organizations all along the Gulf Coast, which were having a hard time sourcing these products directly.” Recently, Chaney spearheaded the complete redesign of the DollarDays website, a project that required more than six months of research and development. Chaney and her team are now in the process of developing an online wish list program so the company’s nonprofit partners can easily communicate their needs to potential donors. Additionally, she is spearheading a launch of a new backpack line called Forward, which, with its unique design, quality construction and affordable price point, make it an ideal product for back-to-school drives and backpack programs. Chaney manages to balance a hectic professional life with

a busy social life and full volunteering schedule – and all as a single mother to her energetic 10-year-old daughter, Elle. Chaney attributes her accomplishments thus far to a few key values: The commitment of staying true to herself, her support-driven approach to leadership, the power of a positive outlook, and balance. Q: We’ve focused on the problems and solutions of fine hair here, but are there also advantages to it? RG: Of course! Fine hair can look stunning, just like all other types of hair. Fine hair tends to be soft and silky. This makes it harder to style, but the flip side is that it can almost glow with a wonderful, natural shine. Those with curly fine hair will also find they spend much less time straightening it than their thicker-haired friends. Fine hair is also brilliant for the summer months, when it helps to keep the head cooler. Just like all other hair types, fine hair comes with plentiful advantages, as well as its own particular issues!
From static issues to limp, dull styles, fine hair can sometimes feel impossible to get right. Thankfully, expert color specialist Rodney Gentry, based at Sachi Studios in Scottsdale, is here to help! Q: First, why is it that some of us have finer hair than others? Rodney Gentry: Fine hair results when each individual strand of hair has a small circumference, so that individual strands are not as large as those belonging to other people whose hair has a wider circumference. Q: Do people with fine hair have particular problems as a result of the hair’s fineness? RG: Clients with fine hair tend to come to me with a similar range of complaints. While fine hair can look sleek and beautiful, it can be difficult to style. Many clients also wish for more volume to their hair. Q: How do you help them to overcome these issues? RG: There are plenty of options for those with fine hair. Highlights are one way to add volume and texture, and lowlights can work really well, too. It is really incredible what you can do with color. Clients always get a boost when they see how different their fine hair looks after it has undergone a color treatment. There are also some great products on the market to help with fine hair. I’m loving Goldwell Kerasilk Repower range right now. The four products—shampoo, conditioner, volume plumping cream, volume blow-dry spray— harness the power of natural ingredients like carob in order to create long-lasting volume that leaves the hair bouncy and lightweight. Products like these work wonders, and it is great to be able to introduce clients to them and know how much they will enjoy the effect that they have. Simple things like drying technique can also make a big difference. People with fine hair should lift the hair outward and upward as they dry if they want maximum volume. They should also avoid brushing it when wet, as fine hair can break very easily.
Q: What other problems do people with fine hair face? RG: Fine hair can be more prone to damage than thick hair, so those with fine hair need to be careful about over-styling and the use of chemical treatments. Here at Rodney Gentry, we specialize in using products that are kind to the hair, and that nurture it at the same time as coloring it. I don’t believe that there is any place for harsh chemical treatments in a modern salon—they just aren’t necessary anymore. Enzyme-based products can color hair beautifully, and are so much kinder to it than the old peroxide-based treatments. Q: Can you recommend any quick fixes for those with fine hair? RG: Well, a quick trip to Sachi Studios, for one! For those after a quick fix at home, I would recommend always having a deep conditioning masque on hand, ready to be used as a weekly treatment or whenever particularly luscious locks are required. Raquel Kahn is bringing the sizzle to Scottsdale at her new gym

Spring is here and like the saguaro flowers and orange blossoms, a brand-new dance fitness studio has opened in Old Town Scottsdale. Fit 6-7-8 (www. fit678.com) is the latest fitness craze to hit the Valley, blending Miami nightlife-inspired dance moves with high-energy pop music. For six days each week, the cardio studio becomes an ad hoc gym where calories melt away to the choreographed steps of Rihanna and Beyoncé. Fit 6-7-8’s doors opened in January, as the brainchild of Raquel Kahn, a small-town girl with big dancing dreams. Armed with a degree in mechanical engineering and a passion for dance and entrepreneurship, Kahn left the technology world behind and followed her heart to Scottsdale to open Fit 6-7-8 for women. In fact, building up a community of strong, confident women has always been at the forefront of the Fit 6-7-8 vision. “Every client who comes through our doors has her own story,” Kahn says. “Hearing about their lives and what drives them inspires me. Giving women confidence to own their space and their bodies is my greatest goal.” The boutique gym offers an array of women-only workouts, including barre, flexibility and strengthening, high-intensity interval training, and its popular “Vixen Workout,” which combines commercial choreography with music remixes. An artist at heart, fashion designer Ruby Farias brings her creative talents to life with Ruby Farias Designs (www.rubyfariasdesigns.com), creating wearable works of art for women and men. Growing up, Farias learned her craft by watching her mother sew, which led to making her first pair of bell-bottom pants. Following her artistic calling, Farias then began creating murals, started a jewelry line, and studied drawing. Later, after working in the corporate world for 28 years, Farias left the banking business behind to follow her passion. “I felt I needed something different to wear to the [art] studio so I splattered a dress and a pair of boots,” Farias says. This was the beginning of Ruby Farias Designs. Inspired by color and nature, Farias’ one-ofa-kind designs are built on her signature aesthetic of bold colors and playful proportions that create classic, captivating silhouettes. Today, Farias hand-paints the fabric of her clothes with a special fabric paint she created herself. “Since I started painting on clothing and accessories, the evolution of where I am today is all about providing more custom designs that are not available elsewhere. “When I make a custom piece, I work to learn about my client and to better understand what he or she needs me to create. I work with them one-on-one,” Farias says. Over the years, her line – which includes everything from dresses and shirts to gowns, shoes and handbags – has expanded to oversized derby hats and, most recently, a line of leggings made from fabric that has been printed with her existing canvas paintings. Always one to make her clients feel fabulous, Farias loves to help build people’s self-esteem and confidence while giving back to the community. Whether she’s donating a signature piece to an auction or serving on a nonprofit committee, she pours her heart and soul into each project. “Knowing my clients are the center of attention when wearing one of my pieces is all so worth it to me,” she says. “I love to see them shine.”

By day, Michael Cawthon can be found bouncing between plastic surgery and dermatology offices while working in the medical aesthetic industry, where maintaining a personal image comes with the territory. “I am part of them when I step into a practice, and I try to integrate appropriately,” Cawthon says. Integrating without blending in is one of his style strengths, demonstrated by his fondness for blue suits and good shoes. “I probably own seven blue suits and favor Lanvin sneakers and Harris shoes for their uniqueness,” he says. Although Cawthon prefers solids and various colors of indigo during the workday, don’t put it past him to sport a pair of striped socks on the job. Evenings and weekends bring out Cawthon’s casual side. “I like lululemon ABC pants for the fit, comfort and style,” he says. “I’m engaged in conversation all day so at night, I need to wind down and let my introverted tendencies switch back on.” When it’s time to say goodbye to a suit, Cawthon donates to The Phoenix Suit Project, which provides interview attire to men hoping to make a new life for themselves. What is your most prized possession in your closet? Great shoes. I love them on men and women. In fact, shoes are one of the first things I notice on people. Who influences your style? My mom has always influenced my style. She taught me to dress to instill confidence in myself. If she were alive today, she would be proud that I still live by her words. Do you have a favorite place to shop? Nordstrom is my favorite store – in part because they have great cologne for men, which is a weakness of mine.

As the Arizona Diamondbacks celebrate their 20th anniversary season, baseball legend Luis Gonzalez continues his legacy off the field

n average, a diamondback rattlesnake’s life expectancy is 15 to 20 years. But, don’t tell that to Luis “Gonzo” Gonzalez, who is well into his second decade as arguably the most popular Arizona Diamondbacks player of all time and is showing no signs of slowing down. Gonzalez grew up in West Tampa, a primarily CubanAmerican neighborhood in Tampa, Florida. The baseball-crazed community would become famous for not just helping to develop Gonzalez into a Major League Baseball player, but also producing fellow greats including Wade Boggs, Lou Piniella, Tino Martinez, Tony La Russa, Fred McGriff, Gary Sheffield and Dave Magadan (who today works with Gonzalez and the D-backs as a hitting coach), among others. “There were virtually no serious football players or even basketball players in the area – baseball was life,” says Gonzalez, who still distinctly remembers attending Cincinnati Reds spring training games in Florida as a child and watching the famed Big Red Machine team including Pete Rose and Johnny Bench, all the while dreaming of one day getting his chance to make it to “The Big Show.” In 1988, Gonzalez got his chance when he was drafted by the Houston Astros in the fourth round of that year’s amateur draft. By 1990, he made his Major League debut as an outfielder. “Over the next nine years, I fell in love and got married while playing outfield for the Houston Astros, Chicago Cubs and Detroit Tigers,” Gonzalez says. “Then, in 1999, my life changed forever.” Yes, that was the year that he was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks, a then three-year-old expansion team. But, it was also the year his wife, Christine, gave birth to their triplets: Megan, Jacob and Alyssa. Immediately in love with Arizona, the organization and – most of all – the triplets, the next several years of his life were the stuff of legend. Making an early impact on the team, Gonzalez made the MLB All-Star team that first year in Arizona. And then in 2001, Gonzalez not only hit 57 homeruns in one season and won the MLB All-Star Homerun Derby, but he led the D-backs to their first (and only) World Championship, hitting the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning in Game Seven of the World Series. At the same time, Gonzalez deepened his ties with the Valley through dedicated community service, which included helping the team raise millions of dollars for local charities through the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation as well as volunteerism with his family. “I stayed with the team until 2006, and then played one season with the Los Angeles Dodgers and then the Miami Marlins, respectively, before I retired in 2009 and came back to my adopted home of Scottsdale, where I immediately rejoined the D-backs, this time as special assistant to the president, Derrick

Over the past decade, Gonzalez became the first D-backs player to have his jersey retired and has acted as an ambassador for the brand as well as a talent scout and continued community service advocate. In 2010, Gonzalez partnered with the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation to launch Going Gonzo for Kids, an initiative to raise funds for youth-based charities. “For five straight years, we raised more than $100,000 annually and immediately gave the money to children’s charities such as Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix, St. Peter’s Mission School, 100 Club of Arizona, Home Base Youth Services, Southwest Human Development, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Maggie’s Place, Special Olympics of Arizona, and Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center,” says Gonzalez, who was inducted into the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame in 2015. On top of this, Gonzalez has also been active in the team’s efforts to help youth gain safe access to baseball. “Since 2000, the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation has built
or refurbished 39 baseball fields as part of the ‘Diamonds Back’ Field Building Program representing a charitable investment of more than $10 million,” Gonzalez says. “In partnership with APS and a charitable gift from individual players, the program has allowed children from across the state to play baseball and softball at quality facilities.” The fields generally feature new lights, an electronic scoreboard, new fencing and backstops, new irrigation, and new grass and dirt. Each is named in honor of a D-backs great – the Luis Gonzalez Field is located in Tempe.
A CELEBRATORY SEASON
So, what’s next for the beloved local hero? Today, nearly 20 years after he first donned the D-backs uniform, Gonzalez – now a senior advisor to the president and CEO and still the franchise’s all-time leader in nearly every offensive category, including hits – is busy helping the team celebrate its 20th anniversary season. According to Gonzalez, there are a few key elements of the
20th anniversary celebration. First, there will be the “D-backs 20th Anniversary Experience,” a 2,000-square-foot exhibit at Chase Field, located on the main concourse in right field behind the Coors Light Strike Zone. It will feature historic artifacts, memorabilia and photography celebrating the team’s history and a wall featuring baseballs signed by nearly all D-backs players and coaches. Second, fans can vote for the D-backs All-Time Team now through May 15 at www.dbacks.com/20, which will also serve as the online home for the yearlong celebration. And, finally, a commemorative patch featuring a 20th anniversary logo will adorn the team’s jerseys throughout the season. “On top of all of this, one of the things I am most excited about is the launch of Gonzo’s Hometown Heroes Fund this season,” Gonzalez says. “This new fundraising arm will donate 100 percent of its proceeds to benefit projects, programs and nonprofit organizations that support police officers, firefighters and first responders across Arizona.” Gonzalez hopes to raise more than $100,000 this year through donations, which are tax deductible, and team-led activities in honor of those who stand behind the badge. “To date, the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation have made charitable contributions totaling more than $55 million to nonprofit organizations from across Arizona. In addition, more than $10 million in tickets and autographed merchandise has been donated to nonprofits, schools, auctions and events,” says Gonzalez, who is excited to take the “charity baton” through his newest initiative and hopes it will help push the team toward its next $50 million in giving. Speaking of batons, he recently passed one – the baseball baton – to his son, Jacob. A standout infielder for Chaparral High School in Scottsdale, Jacob was drafted last summer by the San Francisco Giants, a D-backs rival. In 2017, just before he was drafted, Jacob was a finalist for Baseball Player of the Year at the azcentral Sports Awards. With his son successfully in the process of making the transition to the Major Leagues, Gonzalez is planning to headline the event this year, which will take place at ASU Gammage on June 10, honoring the best and brightest in male and female high school athletes across Arizona. And after that, Gonzalez hopes to see his team in the thick of the Postseason hunt again all summer long. Last year, the team made it to the Postseason for the first time since 2011. “I think we’re all pretty excited about the pitching staff and revamped bullpen,” says Gonzalez, noting that all five of the D-backs starting pitchers are back, and Brad Boxberger from the Tampa Bay Rays and Yoshihisa Hirano from Japan will be joining Archie Bradley in the bullpen. SCOTTSDALE CULINARY FESTIVAL Celebrating 40 years of food, brews and fun
A longtime local favorite tradition, the Scottsdale Culinary Festival pairs delicious food and spirited drinks with fundraising. This year is set to be the best yet, as the festival will ring in its 40th birthday. In honor of this milestone, the weekend will surely not disappoint hungry (and thirsty) attendees. Kick off the festivities at The Cocktail Society on Friday, April 13 with an exclusive night of cocktails, whimsical entertainment and elegant tastings at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. The Cocktail Society will include live music and food samples, plus showstopping performances including aerial and flair bartending, stilt walkers, contortionists, balancing acts, magicians, and living art displays. Doors will open at 7 p.m., and tickets will include food, beverages and entertainment for $85 (online presale, which ends an hour before the event) or $100 (at the door). And for the festival itself, the grassy Scottsdale Civic Center Mall will set the scene for a two-day culinary immersion. A ticket acts as a dining passport, enabling guests to try various cuisines from more than 40 Valley restaurants, including classic barbecue, sweet treats, Asian fusion, and European delights. Wash it all down with local wines, spirits and brews, courtesy of the festival’s Local Lounge presented by Hensley Beverage Company. For beer connoisseurs, don’t miss Four Peaks Brewing Company’s Beer Garden. Here, you’ll find more than 30 breweries and 250 specialty beers from local and national craft brewers as well as beer games. The nearby Tito’s Handmade Vodka Stardust Lounge will serve up refreshing cocktails. The largest film festival in town will make its way to celebrate filmmakers and filmgoers at Harkins Scottsdale 101 this month. The 11-day Phoenix Film Festival will take place from Thursday, April 5 through Sunday, April 15, featuring 296 screenings from different countries, with an entire spectrum of genres covered. The festival has been named one of “The 25 Coolest Film Festivals” and “Top 50 Worth the Entry Fee” by MovieMaker Magazine. The festival began in 2000, when filmmakers Chris LaMont and Golan Ramras came up with the idea of a film festival upon realizing Phoenix didn’t have such an event – and seeing the need to bring filmmakers and film aficionados together. Jason Carney, the current executive director, began as a volunteer in that first year and took his current position in 2005. “The key goal of our festival is to provide the best films we can find while also programming a wide variety of films,” says Carney, noting that the opportunity to give filmmakers a stage to screen their films is the most rewarding aspect of seeing the festival come to fruition. This year, 25,000 cinephiles are expected to attend, and there will be a showcase of Music in Movies and a Women Director Showcase, as well as an expanded lineup of LGBTQ films. Carney is devoted to continuing to foster the bond between filmmakers and attendees. “Film is such a vital art form that we all have a feeling or opinion about,” he says. This bond is strengthened by the festival’s events, including panels; Kids’ Day (April 7, 9 a.m.-2 p.m.), an interactive exploration in filmmaking; Industry Night (April 6, 5-11 p.m.), a chance to network with moviemakers; and Geek Day (April 8, 1:30-6:30 p.m.), a tribute to fan favorites like superheroes and cosplay. And, of course, there will be plenty of parties, such as an opening night kickoff (April 5, 6 p.m.) and after parties at CafePino (April 13, 9 p.m.) and Cien Agaves (April 14, 9 p.m.). Celebrities and filmmakers are usually among the attendees, and, according to Carney, the filmmaker aspect is what really takes the festival experience to the next level. “We try to have as many filmmakers as possible attend the festival and participate in Q&A sessions following the film.” Tickets range from $13 for a single screening to $450 for a platinum pass, which includes access to all films, a VIP area with drinks, and admission to the opening night soiree. New this year are Golden Tickets ($25), which allow attendees to purchase a single ticket and be seated in the VIP section. Historic Hotels

With sunshine nearly every day, lush golf courses and beautiful desert landscapes, Arizona is a vacationer’s paradise. Figuring out what do in the Valley isn’t so much a challenge as is deciding which luxury hotel to rest your head, or dig into a gourmet meal. One of the most notable resorts is the Arizona Biltmore (www.arizonabiltmore. com). Nicknamed the “Jewel of the Desert,” the Biltmore has become a playground of the rich and famous since its inception in 1929. Renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright consulted on the project with his former student Albert Chase McArthur, and it remains one of the only existing hotels in the world with his signature design. Midcentury charm can be enjoyed at Hotel Valley Ho (www.hotelvalleyho.com), a colorful boutique hotel that commemorates the fun-loving spirit of the 1950s. What was once a place of refuge for celebrities like Bing Crosby and Janet Leigh is now a swanky must-stay destination for all. This urban park features numerous memorials of prominent figures, as well as pays tribute to significant events that made Arizona, well, Arizona. The plaza was first founded in 1978 in honor of Gov. Wesley Bolin. Situated right in front of the Arizona Capitol in Downtown Phoenix, the Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza’s prime location attracts individuals both near and far. It acts as an open-air public space where guests can stroll the grounds and explore monuments, memorials and lush gardens. With more than 30 memorials – including Arizona Pioneer Women, World War I, Arizona Peace Officers Memorial and others – it’s easy to lose track of time at this Phoenix point of pride that is jam-packed with Valley history. 1700 W. Old Adobe Mission
Adobe, otherwise known as mudbrick, is one of the earliest building materials used throughout the world. In the late 1910s, the first Mexican settlers of Scottsdale constructed the Old Adobe Mission completely by hand. More than 14,000 adobe bricks comprise the building, each of which weighs 50 pounds. Robert T. Evans was inspired by the Spanish colonial revival architectural style, a style commonly seen in Sonora and New Mexico. Evans decided to bring that look to Scottsdale with the Old Adobe Mission. Today, the building is one of only three adobe structures remaining in the area. Additionally, it is the oldest standing church in Scottsdale. In 2001, Old Adobe Mission became a member of the Register of Historic Buildings and has become a sought-after destination for historical reflection and prayer. 3817 N. Valley National Bank
Banks today can be somewhat blasé-looking, but Valley National Bank (now Chase Bank) on 44th Street and Camelback Road is anything but nondescript. In fact, it’s kind of funky! From the circular floor plan to large concrete, mushroom-like structures out front, circles seem to have inspired the space. The man behind the eye-catching design was Frank Henry, an architect who completed the project in 1968. Because the Great Depression had (decades before) hit the city hard, especially banks, Valley National’s playful design was meant to entice Phoenicians to trust the system again. Walter Bimson, the bank’s founder, was a collector of art. So not only was the exterior a masterpiece, but the interior was once decked in fine paintings and sculptures. 4401 E. Notable Sculptures
Sprinkled throughout the Valley is public art just as awe-inspiring and available as the foothills. Scottsdale Civic Center Mall is a quiet retreat full of paths for strolling, foliage, fountains and sculptures, including Robert Indiana’s bright red and blue LOVE. Scottsdale Waterfront is home to the Soleri Bridge and Plaza, an artful design that celebrates solar events produced

by the sun’s shadow as much as it celebrates community. Nearby is Copper Falls, a waterfall feature with bronze upside-down domes that connect to the canal. Another water wonder is Fountain Hills’ world-famous fountain, which sprays water 560 feet in the air for 15 minutes every hour. Created by Robert McCulloch, the fountain is a celebration of life and water where it is appreciated the most due to its scarcity – in the desert. A celestial object that’s fixed, yet always in motion, has become the focal point in Civic Space Park near Arizona State University’s downtown campus; Janet Echelman’s Her Secret is Patience sculpture looks like an elongated dreamcatcher floating in the air. Speaking of air, that exact element inspired artist James Turrell to create Knight Rise at Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. Knight Rise is a stark architectural chamber with benches lining its walls so that visitors may sit and peer up at the sky. The experience creates an illusion that one is seated on an ocean of air.
Wrigley Mansion
Located at the top of a hill with sweeping views of Piestewa Peak, Wrigley Mansion was constructed by chewing gum mogul William Wrigley Jr. in 1932 as a gift for his wife on their 50th wedding anniversary. True to its roots, Wrigley Mansion now plays host to many, many fairy tale weddings. In fact, The Knot has consistently deemed it “best wedding venue.” The mansion is also known for fine dining at Geordie’s and sweeping 360-degree views of the mountains and city with architecture invoking Spanish, California and Mediterranean styles. 2501 E. Heritage Square
Heritage Square is a quaint reminder of Phoenix’s storied past. Located on Block 14 of the original townsite of the city, the square is a collection of Victorian-style bungalows and buildings now used as restaurants and museums. From The Rose & Crown Pub to the Arizona Science Center to the historic 1895 Rosson House – a museum that honors the lifestyle of early Phoenix families – the square is recognized as a vital piece of the city’s cultural

F.Q. Story Neighborhood Historic District
Spanish colonial revival, English Tudor, craftsman bungalows – oh my! The F.Q. Story Neighborhood Historic District (www.fqstory. org) is a collection of homes of various architectural styles. Francis Quarles Story, the neighborhood’s namesake, was involved in numerous developments in early Phoenix. He invested in the now F.Q. Story Neighborhood, which consists of 602 (like Phoenix’s area code) homes
Connecting Downtown Phoenix to a slew of historic neighborhoods is Roosevelt Row (www.rooseveltrow.org), affectionately known as RoRo. This historic district has always been a hodgepodge of things, but in the early 1990s the arts community took over. By turning boarded-up buildings into galleries and boutiques, local artists have reinvented RoRo to be a place where creativity is celebrated.
Scottsdale Arts District
Scottsdale Arts District (www.scottsdaleartsdistrict.com) is an epicenter for art and has been for 40 years. Located in Old Town Scottsdale along Main Street and Marshall Way, this charming area lined with cobblestoned streets is home to some of the country’s finest art galleries. More so, one of Scottsdale’s most photographed landmarks resides nearby. The Bronze Horse Fountain, donated by artist and gallery owner Bob Parks in 1989, sits in a roundabout on 5th Avenue and Marshall Way. The fountain is a nod to the city as a central hub to Arabian horse breeding in America. In addition to restaurants and boutiques, the district is known for its Scottsdale ArtWalk, which takes place every Thursday and is the oldest continuous art walk in the country.
Outdoor Amusements
To truly know the heart and soul of the Valley is to visit its natural wonders. And with countless mountains and hiking trails, there are plenty to explore. One of the most prominent natural landmarks of the Phoenix-metro area, as well as a top hiking destination, is Camelback Mountain. It has the highest peak in Phoenix (2,704 feet), and caves indicate that the mountain was a sacred site for the Hohokam culture. McDowell Sonoran Preserve is a protected area of land that encompasses most of the McDowell Mountain range. There are 10 different trailheads to enter the preserve, where visitors are welcome to run, walk or even horseback ride. Pinnacle Peak Park in the Troon North area of North Scottsdale is another protected Sonoran landscape. It’s home to the Pinnacle Peak Trail, which concludes with a granite summit that rises 600 feet, an ideal hike for those looking to get their heart pumping. Murphy’s Bridle Path in Central Phoenix is great for all skill levels. The 2.5-mile, in-town trail is sheltered by trees that line Bethany Home Road and Central Avenue. For parks, lakes and paths galore, Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt is the place to be. What was once a serious flooding hazard has turned into a recreational area that stretches 11 miles throughout Scottsdale. Within it sits Water Mark, an aluminum horse-like gargoyle sculpture wherein, during flash flooding, water spews out of the horses’ mouths.
National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona In 1976, Gov. Raul Castro authorized the development of a state veterans cemetery. In December 1978, the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona was dedicated, with the first burial taking place in March 1979. With

225 acres of quiet desert land, the setting is a peaceful final resting place where veterans and their families are remembered and honored for their service and sacrifice. In 1999, the facility underwent a renovation to include new committal shelters, a visitor center, an assembly area, landscaping and more. Among all the heroes that lay here, some of the most notable include Nathan E. Cook, the last survivor of the SpanishAmerican War, and former Arizona Gov. Evan Mecham and his wife, Florence. Historic Evans House
Surrounded by generic office buildings and parking garages in Downtown Phoenix sits a little old house known for its pointy terracotta roof. It’s almost as if someone plucked it out of a fairy tale and dropped it in modern-day Phoenix. Before the downtown area became the downtown we all know it as today, it was a residential neighborhood full of Queen Anne-style homes. In 1893, a local doctor of the name John M. Evans decided to build his family a beautiful house. The Evans House, which was restored in 1988 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, is characterized by its dome-like roof and circular front porch. It’s only one of two Victorian-style houses that persisted in downtown throughout the years; the other is the Rosson House. The

When it comes to forward-thinking designs, architect Frank Lloyd Wright was the master. Some of Wright’s most radical ideas – most of which are now common practices in modern design – included open floor plans, indoor/ outdoor living spaces and natural light. Located in Scottsdale’s McDowell Mountains, Taliesin West (www.franklloydwright.org/taliesin-west) was Wright’s winter home and studio. The building remains nestled in the desert as a living reminder of Wright’s legacy and impact on contemporary design. The David & Gladys Wright House (www.davidwrighthouse.org) is yet another gem by the famed architect, who built the concrete, spiral-designed house in 1950 for his son, David, and daughter-inlaw, Gladys. The house, which is located in Arcadia, was recently donated to the School of Architecture at Taliesin and will be a learning center for graduate architectural students.

Cosanti
As an architect, urban designer, artist, craftsman and philosopher, Paolo Soleri always pushed the boundaries in everything he pursued. In doing so, he created spaces where humans and the natural environment could coexist. Enter Cosanti: Five acres of desert and experimental buildings harmonizing as one. Designated as an Arizona Historic Site, Cosanti is Soleri’s best collection of work, featuring everything from earth-formed concrete structures to bronze sculptures to his world-famous wind chimes. With courtyards and visitor paths sprinkled throughout the property, guests can amble at their leisure to take in all the amazing works of art. Everything here was built using earth-casting methods, which visitors can learn more about on a guided tour of the property. 6433 E. Arabian Library
Upon first glance, you wouldn’t think this 20,000-square-foot facility at the base of the McDowell Mountains is a library. With its weathered walls of steel and leaf-like metal sculptures, it looks more like a large-scale art installation. Created by richärd+bauer, the building reflects the natural beauty of the slot canyons found in Northern Arizona. Norie Sato, a Seattle-based artist, created art pieces that mimic the design of a prickly pear cactus distinctly for the library. Not only does the design exude a natural feel, but the construction does as well. And, the library is LEED Silver certified. Translation: It’s a green building. 10215 E. Phoenix Financial Center
The Phoenix Financial Center is best characterized as two facing curved towers with two rotundas at the base. One of the curved towers earned the nickname “The Punchcard Building”
by locals for its 12-inch vertical slot windows that punctuate the building’s side. Built in 1964 by architect Wenceslao Sarmiento, the building has become a staple of the Valley. When it was first realized, the building housed more than 50 businesses, including Standard Oil, Sperry Phoenix and Transworld Airlines. Fun fact: The south rotunda lobby was used as a set in the movie What Planet Are You From?, which was released in 2000. Rumor has it that a time capsule was buried below the building, intended to be opened for the state’s centennial celebration. 3443 N. Central Ave., Phoenix.
Arizona State Capitol
The state’s capitol boasts neoclassical architecture. Perched atop the building’s copper dome is the Winged Victory – a statue that’s older than Arizona itself! Modeled after a Greek goddess, Winged Victory has been a symbol for justice and freedom since 1901. But when the West was still wild, cowboys used her as a shooting target. During the 19th century, Arizona’s legislative body moved around a lot before setting up shop in the current state capitol building, which is located on 17th Avenue and Washington Street. The Arizona Capitol Museum maintains the 100-year-old building, offering visitors museum exhibits, events and programs that focus on the history and culture of Arizona. 1700 W. Scottsdale Grammar School 1 and 2
The Little Red Schoolhouse, originally known as Scottsdale Grammar School 1 (www. scottsdalemuseum.com), was built in 1896 in response to the need for an educational system in Scottsdale. What began as a one-room schoolhouse expanded into two classrooms in 1909, and the building was also a communal hub where activities were hosted throughout the decades. The Little Red Schoolhouse is now the Scottsdale Historical Museum. Scottsdale Grammar School 2 later opened in 1928 due to an influx of families with children. The school was equipped with eight classrooms, an administrative office, a nurse room and a cafeteria. It was also the first building that reflected regional Southwestern influences, using Spanish colonial revival design. Over the years, the school adapted to the growing community and even changed its name to Loloma School. Today, we know it as the Scottsdale Artists’ School.
Orpheum Theater
Orpheum Theater has stood the test of time since it was first established in 1929. The 1,364-seat theater was originally used for vaudeville acts as part of the nationwide Orpheum Circuit. By the ’40s, it was purchased by Paramount Pictures and renamed The Paramount. A local Mexican family leased the theater for nearly two decades and used the space to present Hispanic events and movies. The theater stood idle for the years that followed until the City of Phoenix began a 12-year, $14 million restoration in 1984. Under its original name, the theater reopened to the public in 1997 and has since been a go-to spot for firstclass productions. The venue, built in a Spanish revival style and accented with intricate murals and sculptures, is truly a beautiful artifact of Phoenix’s past. 203 W. 2018 INFINITI QX80 Fresh new looks debut for this luxury flagship SUV BY JIM PRUETER
VITAL STATS: Base price: $64,750
Infiniti’s massive luxury SUV, originally known as the QX56, was first introduced for the 2004 model year. It was renamed QX80 for 2014 and refreshed for 2015 – a redo that was met with polarizing scorn, mostly for the snub-nosed front end. For 2018, Infiniti updated the QX80, and improved it to be more contemporary and upscale. The new front fascia sports a wider and more upright grille reminiscent of the 2018 Lincoln Navigator, while slimmer and higher LED headlights somewhat mimic the stylish Q60 coupe. At the rear, the redesigned tailgate includes a wide chrome strip connecting the new taillights. Inside, there’s a better-looking steering wheel and gear shift knob. New leather seating options are all finished with a handsome quilted pattern and a stain-resistant micro-coating. Real wood veneers trim the center console and dash. The QX80 seats eight when fitted with a second-row bench, seven with captain’s chairs. When you choose captain’s chairs, you also get a large center console with USB ports and HVAC settings for rear passengers. Much about the QX80 hasn’t changed, including the body-on-frame, truck-based chassis

that delivers a ride and handling experience that’s far from sporting and precise. The steering, while light to the touch, is vague with little driver communication. My test model included the optional Deluxe Technology Package with a Hydraulic Body Motion Control system. To me, there was no discernable difference; the QX80 still feels topheavy and clumsy on the road. Still, the cabin is exceptionally quiet, and the ride is smooth and comfortable. The 5.6-liter, 400-horsepower, V-8 engine – connected to a seven-speed automatic transmission – is also a carryover, as is the dismal fuel economy. But, power comes on instantly, and this beast moves with imperturbable poise and assurance. Overall, the updated QX80 falls short of newer and thoroughly upgraded large luxury SUVs like the impressive new Lincoln Navigator, Mercedes-Benz GLS and Land Rover Range Rover. It’s a good-looking vehicle with a powerful engine, comfortable ride, and a great-looking cabin. But the infotainment and driver assistance technology is far outdated, and it lacks other features you can get in most other competitor vehicles.

Discover Wilmington Wilmington has both an Atlantic coastline and a riverfront, with a picturesque historic downtown, making it an unexpected destination for first-time visitors. The Carolina Beach Boardwalk has seaside amusement rides, surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, outdoor movies, music and tempting food. A favorite spot is Britt’s Donut Shop, where you can watch them fry up doughnuts and grab one while it’s still hot. For a day in nature, head to Carolina Beach State Park, with excellent walking paths and a ranger-led tour. This is one of the only places in the world indigenous to the Venus’ flytrap, and you can get a look at it in its natural habitat.

For a great example of North Carolina seafood, stop by Surf House Oyster Bar + Surf Camp. The restaurant relies on small local farms, so the menu changes often – if on the menu, the shrimp and grits with bourbon-coconut sauce is a must-try. The restaurant also serves up small-batch spirits.
Find Nature on Kure Beach Kure Beach is a natural setting about a half-hour from downtown Wilmington and home to Fort Fisher State Historic Site and the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher, as well as a beautiful pier and sandy beaches. At the southern tip of Kure Beach, the Fort Fisher State Historic Site has a quarter-mile trail and self-guided interpretive exhibits about this Civil War site. The aquarium is a nice change from a day at the beach and is just the right size to explore for a couple of hours – be sure to find Luna, the albino alligator. Regarding other animal encounters, sea turtle season starts May 1 and lasts for about three months each year. Volunteers mark and secure nests early in the season and baby turtles hatch each fall.
Tour Wrightsville Beach Located on both the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean, Wrightsville Beach is about 20 minutes from downtown Wilmington. Known for its walkable village, Wrightsville Beach is the birthplace of surfing in North Carolina and continues to be a hot spot for the sport. Escape to nearby Airlie Gardens, where you can stroll the paths and take in the outdoors. Azaleas bloom in the spring, swans glide across the lakes, and there are bird sightings all year. Sit for a bit and admire the massive live oak trees. Enjoy lunch and the afternoon at Dockside Restaurant on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. A tradition for 25 years, Dockside is a prime spot to relax with a glass of wine while watching the boats. Or, go on a boat yourself. Bodega 13’s seafood paella ($45) pays perfect homage to the original, invented in Spain 1,200 years ago. Chef Kurtis Purdy starts by roasting lobster shells with saffron and tomato paste for hours, which results in a rich broth. He then sautes peas, onions, tomatoes and bell peppers in a shallow pan, eventually adding the broth and raw Calasparra rice imported from Spain, cooking it low and slow. Over the next 45 minutes, Purdy adds more broth and then layers of seafood, including lobster, Spanish octopus, shrimp, Scottish salmon, day boat scallops, jumbo lump crab, and New Zealand mussels. It is plated to be enjoyed family style, and it’s garnished with rosemary that is lit on fire en route to the table, eliciting an intoxicating aroma. Bodega 13, 8876 E. CHANDON NO. 5 A fresh, floral cocktail fit for spring

Oscar Wilde’s classic 1891 novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, is the inspiration for Dorian, a restaurant that opened in Old Town Scottsdale earlier this year. “For those unfamiliar, the story is set in Victorian England and follows the handsome and lustful Dorian Gray, who sells his soul to remain young forever so that he can indulge in life’s pleasures,” says lead bartender Caleb Taddeucci. “But don’t worry, while the restaurant and menu look and taste the part – with Victorian accents and a focus on classic, elegant ingredients – your soul is safe with us.” To give the cocktail program a decidedly upscale feel akin to the novel’s seemingly endless indulgences, many of the drinks are topped with bubbles. One of particular note is the Chandon No. 5 ($10). The cocktail begins with Nolet’s Silver Dry Gin, which has notes of rose, peach and raspberry. “The botanicals were specially selected and are individually macerated and then distilled to give the gin its distinctive, fruit-forward flavor,” Taddeucci says. The gin is combined with The Bitter Truth Violet Liqueur, which is made from wild violet blossoms that grow in the Bavarian Alps and is also what gives the cocktail its luminous bluish violet hue. Taddeucci then adds fresh lemon juice to give the drink some tang and acid. The mixture is shaken and then strained into a coupe glass before being topped with Chandon Brut Classic Champagne. “Known for its flavors of apple, pear and citrus as well as its soft, dry finish, the Chandon adds a lightness, ever-so-slight sweetness, and refreshing effervescence to the very floral-forward cocktail,” says Taddeucci, who garnishes the drink with a twist of lemon. Brandon Gauthier is the new executive chef at Café Bink, where he is focused on preparing farm-to-table new American meals in a cozy, low-key bistro setting.

We hear congratulations are in order? Well, thank you! Yes, in late February I not only took over executive chef duties at Café Bink, but I also purchased the bistro from Amy and Kevin Binkley, making me the chef and owner. But you’re not new to the restaurant itself, or the brand? Kevin gave me my first job out of culinary school in 2002 – at a now-defunct restaurant at El Pedregal in 2002. I then briefly moved to northern Michigan, where I quickly learned their restaurant scene was not as hot as the Valley. When I wanted to come home, Kevin hired me in 2004 to help open Binkley’s. I’ve been with him ever since. I helped open Café Bink in 2007, and, in fact, and have worked at all of the concepts across the Valley over the years, but Carefree has always had my heart. What can people expect with you at the helm? Local. Local. Local. I am especially proud of my new partnership with Two Wash Ranch in New River, which has the best chicken and egg products I have ever tasted, as well as enhanced relationships with McClendon’s Select in Peoria and Duncan Family Farms in Buckeye. That being said, customers’ all-time favorites – like Amy’s Bolognese – will always be on the menu. What are your favorite things to cook? I love anything that requires a hands-on approach like pasta, gnocchi and even baking bread from scratch. What are your favorite things to eat when not working? There is nothing like really good Mexican food, especially green chile pork. What would we be surprised to know about you? I love fly fishing. Did you know April is National Grilled Cheese Month? Our childhood favorite can be partially traced back to ancient Rome, where similar recipes are mentioned in historic text. And the French have been making croque monsieur, a baked or fried ham and cheese sandwich, since the early 1900s. But, it wasn’t until the 1920s when an Iowa man invented a bread slicer and James L. Kraft opened a cheese plant, making both bread and cheese affordable for families, that grilled cheese sandwiches became a staple. Tune into your inner popstar at Blind Dragon, Scottsdale’s newest karaoke lounge

Old Town Scottsdale is turning up the heat – and music – with its latest nightlife offering: Blind Dragon. The karaoke concept is a collaboration between Los Angeles-based h.wood Group – best-known for Bootsy Bellows, The NICE GUY, and several other popular bars and lounges on the West Coast – and Innovative Dining Group, of Sushi Roku fame. They brought on Hotel & Hospitality Group, LLC as partners, with Korey Boals (Arcadia Tavern and Bespoke Inn) taking on the dayto-day duties as the local managing partner. “The ultra-sleek karaoke lounge is slated to give Valley residents and visitors an exclusive entertainment experience like they may find in Hollywood or Las Vegas,” Boals says. “This Scottsdale location joins sister properties in both West Hollywood and Dubai.” The space itself is 8,500 square feet, and the design is striking and bold with vibrant, Asian-inspired artwork throughout, including a massive wall mural that runs the entire length of the lounge’s main bar, hand-painted by local artist Randall Hedden. And the lounge’s quirky life-size figurine of action star and world-renowned

martial artist Bruce Lee will, no doubt, be the subject of many Instagram photo ops. “In addition to the interior’s aesthetic, guests will also be treated to a feast for the eyes with inventive and colorful cocktails and an Asian-inspired bites menu featuring bright, light tastes and a few heartier items,” Boals says. Each of the venue’s signature cocktails are $12, with the exception of their extralarge, strawberry-infused “Get Lei’d” sipper, which is $20 and served in a glamorous gold pineapple glass ($20). Don’t miss the classic mai tai, or other highlights including the Fu Manchu, an Asian twist on an OldFashioned. As for the food, the focus is on smaller bites ranging from $6 to $22 versus big portions or entrees. On the lighter end, there are the usual suspects of edamame and Asian chicken salad, while more filling fare includes a tuna poke bowl, short rib bao (a steamed bun), and wagyu sliders. But the true stars of the show at Blind Dragon are the six private karaoke suites, each equipped with multiple TV screens and audio systems (and the all-important mics!), oversized seating, private bar service, and access to more than 25,000 songs for patrons to belt out. Room sizes ranges from small to large, with varying costs per hour ($100-$200) and food and beverage minimums ($100-$200), as well as the capability of holding eight to 20 guests depending on the suite selected. Karaoke suites can be reserved in advance either online (recommended), via phone, or, if there are suites available upon arrival, they can be booked on the spot. There are also bottle service packages available in the private suites, which range from $425 to $1,000. Blind Dragon is open Thursday to Saturday from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m., and there is no cover charge.
