This month marks a first for us as we introduce a home design issue. I think we can all agree that there are homes – and then there are homes. In this issue, we spotlight eight of the latter (page 39), going inside each property and getting to know the owners and their design inspiration. As each of these homeowners would tell you, creating your ideal space takes a village, from architects and builders to interior designers and landscape experts. With that, meet 10 specialists who have mastered the art of “designing Scottsdale” on page 49. If this has you feeling inspired yourself, check out our roundup of local stores that will help you elevate your space, whether you prefer rustic charm or coastal cool (page 76). Or, perhaps, let Earth Day influence your aesthetic with plant-inspired decor (page 86) and functional art crafted from wood (page 80). This month also marks something else: the pinnacle of all things spring. Dig into verdant enchiladas (page 111), sip on warm weather-perfect sours (page 110), reserve your spot at a specialty dining event (page 78), and don eye-popping hues (page 84) or the latest shoe trends (page 88). And if you really want to soak up the season, take an outdoor bath (page 101). Now is also the time to take your artistic side for a spin – quite literally – with Cycle the Arts, wherein a 10-mile bike ride takes you on a tour of Scottsdale’s public art. Other creative ventures include the weekly Scottsdale ArtWalk pairing gallery views with wine tastings; an all-new experience at Scottsdale Fashion Square called Wonderspaces; an intersection of art, fashion and architecture at Taliesin West; and the inaugural Arcosanti International Film Carnivale. Read about them all on pages 62 and 64. Now, the question is, how are you designing your Scottsdale? BREAKING DOWN HAIR LOSS Carly Klein of National Hair Loss
N
ational Hair Loss, the premier hair loss replacement therapy clinic, is now honored to see clients at their second location. This month, National Hair Loss celebrates opening a brand new location in the charming and convenient Scottsdale Quarter . Hair loss doesn't have to be something to live with. Carly Klein, Founder of National Hair Loss, has made it her mission to help women, men, and children regain their self-confidence by finding successful solutions. "Hair is our identity," Carly says. The staff at National Hair Loss understand the apprehension many people feel before making that first step to schedule a consultation, and that is exactly why each client receives exemplary, personal service. "I, myself, have experienced hair loss. We are very empathetic to what our clients are going through," Carly explains. "People may not realize, but many celebrities in movies and on television with full, gorgeous hair, don't have that thickness without some help. There are lots of cosmetic add-on's, from extensions to scalp micropigmentation, hair systems, and more. Here, at National Hair Loss, we are a one-stop-shop for hair, and we are by your side to achieve your hair goals," she says. Carly has over 20 years in the image industry and knows just how much outward appearance can affect a person's self-esteem. Serving as Vice President for a prestigious dermatology office is where Carly really fell in
love with hair loss replacement therapy and helping men and women feel better about themselves. She noticed that the hair loss treatment field was predominately geared toward men. "Women were affected so deeply by hair loss, too, giving them a lack of self confidence. There weren't many options for women. National Hair Loss is honored to help everyone; men, women, and children." National Hair Loss has been seeing patients in the Valley for nearly a decade. The majority of patients are 14 to 40 years old. National Hair Loss offers treatment programs for all men, women, and children, but also provides hair loss replacement therapy for those with autoimmune diseases and those undergoing chemotherapy. "At National Hair Loss, we go the extra mile for our clients. Our concierge approach caters to the client and their individual circumstance. This is not a one-size-fits-all program. We are here to help because we care about our clients' well-being." "Putting the client first is why National Hair Loss offers a complimentary consultation in the office or virtually," Carly says. Taking an honest and straightforward approach, National Hair Loss educates their clients so that by the time they leave the initial consultation, they know the underlying cause of their hair loss and how to not only stop the hair loss progression, but also how to fix it. "Sometimes not knowing the underlying cause can be scary. We
give the client the knowledge to choose the next step that is right for them," she says. Clients should expect to leave at the end of their visit with a fully customizable program plan and a price estimate to take home and discuss with their loved ones. There are many causes for hair loss. Genetics, autoimmune diseases, chemotherapy, stress, environmental factors, diets, and pregnancy, among other issues, can lead to hair loss. Aside from talking with the client and asking questions to determine causes, National Hair Loss also offers to test hair samples. Samples are taken and sent to a lab in Europe for in-depth testing. Along with foods, detailed testing can show evidence of invasive organisms, toxic metals, and other environmental intolerances that can cause additional hair loss. All these factors can accelerate hair loss. National Hair Loss offers a very comprehensive service to combat each type of hair loss that clients are experiencing. Here, the most advanced treatments for hair loss are used and a treatment plan catered to fit each and every client. National Hair Loss uses microscopic photography to map out areas of loss, so that at each visit the client can see improvement for themselves. National Hair Loss is a philanthropic company that raises money for various centers, including Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center and Facing Forward classes for cancer patients.
“It is my mission to help women, men, and children regain their self-confidence by finding successful solutions The clinic also hosts Beauty in Bloom, a community event to promote healthy living from the inside out. Carly herself is passionate about community, serving on Advisory Boards for Arizona's American Cancer Society's Annual Gala, Women of Scottsdale, and Careers through Culinary Arts Program. National Hair Loss has many longtime clients, including Johnjay & Rich from iHeart Radio Kiss FM Phoenix. Celebrities such as Heidi Powel and Letitia Frye have experienced wonderful results with hair loss treatment and help to spread the word. Recently, the clinic has been featured in Hollywood Reporter, Women's Health, and Men's Health magazines. "If you feel like your hair doesn't seem the way it used to be, call National Hair Loss to schedule a complimentary consultation. National Hair Loss encourages everyone to make the move to know what's going on before it's too late," Carly explains. To contact National Hair Loss or to set up a complimentary consultation, please call 602.283.2355, email frontdesk@nationalhairlossassoc.com, or visit nationalhairlossassoc.com.

MINDFULNESS MATTERS
As the founder of Zen4, Sarah Merkle is committed to helping companies put employee wellness first
Arizona native Sarah Merkle has been passionate about helping people since she was a child. “When I was little, I was sure I would become a doctor,” Merkle says. Dedicated to this idea, she enrolled in pre-med classes at
The University of Arizona immediately after high school. “Even though I aced my organic chemistry and physiology classes, I learned that the sight of blood literally made me faint,” says Merkle, who realized through her hands-on medical internships that medicine may not be her true calling.

Pulse UP CLOSE Quickly pivoting in her senior year of college, she explored psychology and human resources. In her mind, HR still helped people, but in a less physical and more business-minded way. She graduated with a psychology degree and enrolled in an HR master’s program in Minnesota in 2007. She was prepared for the work, but not the weather. “Though I visited family in the Midwest annually, I’d only done so in the summer,” Merkle says. “As it turns out, it’s not as cold as they say – it’s colder!” Chilled to the bone, Merkle sought out new ways to stay in shape, preferably near a heater. “I began taking yoga and found some great gyms, quickly making friends in the fitness industry,” says Merkle, eventually being exposed to the world of professional fitness competitions while getting her start in business at General Mills. By the time she graduated with her master’s degree in 2009 – and was promoted to her second role with General Mills in Nashville, Tennessee – she was ready to compete herself. “In 2010, I entered my first fitness competition through the National Physique Committee, which is America’s largest amateur bodybuilding organization,” Merkle says. She thought working toward the perfect physique, and achieving it, would be the ultimate high. “It wasn’t,” Merkle says. “It was a letdown and one of the biggest eye-opening moments of my life.” Through doing the competition, she discovered that focusing on external things – whether body fat or bikini lines – made her feel empty. She found herself yearning for something more. Determined to find more balance, she took a less extreme approach to dieting and exercise, signing on for a fitness competition in 2012 through the Organization of Competitive Bodybuilders, another amateur bodybuilding circuit but one that promotes a more holistic approach. “When I placed in this competition, it felt good, but it still didn’t satiate me,” Merkle says. “But I didn’t immediately process it all then, because DirecTV came calling.” The satellite giant brought Merkle on board in a massive strategic role, helping drive employee engagement and leadership development for DirecTV employees across the Southwest. “While this took me home to Arizona, it also required 40 weeks of travel annually,” Merkle says. “For years, I focused on meal prep and dedicated workouts, and suddenly I was bouncing between airports, coffee shops and hotel room service 275 days a year.” Eventually, she developed techniques to allow for a healthy lifestyle on the road. “I began to focus inward,” says Merkle, who started working with a health coach and enrolled in the Institute for Integrative Nutrition while still working full time for DirecTV, which was eventually acquired by AT&T.
Finding Her Zen On the fast-track to climb the corporate ladder, Merkle continued to grow her dual career, running a national operations center with AT&T while doubling down on yoga, earning her teaching certification in 2017.

So Scottsdale! April ‘19
“It was through yoga and its meditative practice that everything fell into place. I finally had that moment of feeling fulfilled,” Merkle says. “I knew I needed to find a way to share my knowledge and experiences with others.” So, Merkle took a leap of faith by combining her business prowess with her own journey toward holistic wellness, launching Zen4 in 2018. “The ‘4’ represents the four things I’ve learned on my journey: mindfulness, nourishment, movement and lifestyle,” Merkle says. “Our mission is to offer what we call ‘connected employee solutions’ to small and medium businesses using these pillars.” Merkle goes beyond writing corporate wellness handbooks to focus on collaborations between employees and employers that will ultimately create a more sustainable relationship. To do this, she researches and analyzes businesses to pinpoint areas of risk and opportunity, developing custom company engagement programs. “We then implement a series of workshops and long-term solutions tailored to their needs,” Merkle says. “It’s a hands-on and data-driven approach centered on building a foundation for happy, healthy and fulfilled employees – employees who want to come to work.” Companies including those in tech and healthcare have found success with Zen4’s approach, where workshops can focus on leadership development, talent management, human resources consulting, and wellness – all rooted in Zen4’s key pillars to help create an engaged work culture. The first year in business was so successful that Merkle already has wheels in motion to expand the brand to offer individualized programs for women. “I took a winding road to find my Zen – or Zen4 in this case – and would have loved something like this 10 years ago,” Merkle says. “I am thrilled to pay what I’ve learned forward for all the other women like me.” Learn more about Merkle’s mission at www.zen4.co.
A Connoisseur of Color Rodney Gentry, stylist and color expert at Sachi Studios
Rodney Gentry is one of those people whose Midwestern charm and enthusiasm can’t help but rub off on you. And in his line of work, that’s certainly a plus. Gentry is possibly the Valley’s most adored hair stylist. His clients (some of them might better be described as fans) will happily travel across state lines in order to have him handle their tresses. Many of them simply trust nobody else with their hair. Having operated his own salon in Chicago before relocating to Scottsdale, Gentry brings big city expertise to the Valley, which he combines with his own unique passion for styling and coloring at Sachi Studios. Each client enjoys a truly personalized service. Gentry considers the condition and history of the hair before recommending a treatment program, style and (if desired) color. His focus is on nurturing hair back to full health at the same time as providing stunning styles and fabulous colors. “It’s my goal to make each client feel truly beautiful – and to leave them with a style that they can easily recreate themselves every day,” he says.
Part of this comes down to the right products. Gentry only uses the very best brands available, not skimping when it comes to choosing those products that will bring about dramatic improvements in the hair’s condition. This applies to everything, from daily shampoos to the color treatments that he uses, which are enzyme-based rather than peroxide-based. This means they enhance the condition of the hair as well as give it a wonderfully vibrant color. Color is Gentry’s true passion. From full hair makeovers to the subtlest of highlights or lowlights, he works with his clients to select the colors that are right for their skin tone, the shape of their face and even their preferred color of clothing. “Every single person is unique in their coloring, which is why personalized consultation is so important,” he explains. “You really have to care about each and every client in order to bring out the best in their hair. There’s no one size fits all when it comes to beautiful hair!” Gentry also believes that it is important to stay abreast of trends. From the
Full-service designer and hair color specialist Rodney Gentry can be reached at StainD in Sachi Studios, 10201 N Scottsdale Rd., Scottsdale, AZ 85253. Call 480.639.2000 to make an appointment or visit www.rodneygentry.com for further information.
Oscars to the latest catwalk shows, he’s up to speed with seasonal styles and colors in order to enable each of his clients to achieve a touch of Hollywood glamour. From super straight blonde locks to superbly highlighted plaits with the tiniest of accessories woven in, Gentry is available to provide advice and guidance on how those in the Valley can look their very best this summer, both color-wise and style-wise. CEREMONIAL SNAPSHOTS Gretchen Wakeman mixes creativity and technique to capture the magic of matrimony

So Scottsdale! April ‘19
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but Gretchen Wakeman knows better than anyone how some photos are much more valuable than that. When she was 18, Wakeman was gifted her first single-lens reflex camera, and what began as an interest in developing film in her high school’s darkroom turned into something more. “I have always been a creative person, and creating beautiful images makes me incredibly happy,” says Wakeman, who graduated from Purdue University with a degree in landscape architecture and relocated to Seattle before settling in Arizona in 2001. As her surroundings changed, so did her outlook on photography. “My career has definitely evolved as my hobby became my full-time job, and I have settled into my own style,” Wakeman says. After the birth of her first child in 2007, Wakeman was inspired to get serious about her hobby. During this time, the recession had stalled her job in urban development, and by “fortunate accident,” Wakeman was freed up to pursue her passion. It was in 2010 that she began photographing weddings. “When I first started in wedding photography, I set out to do one thing above all else – to create beautiful work for amazing couples,” Wakeman shares. Wakeman’s photos demonstrate an equilibrium between practiced technique and artistic elegance, with the most intricate details of each special day set against stunning natural landscapes. One of the most important tasks for Wakeman is ensuring the bride and groom feel comfortable enough in front of the camera to let their personalities shine through. “I want the images to have balance and feel very real, with a hint of curated artistry,” she shares. In her free time, Wakeman enjoys attending workshops and photography education courses to make sure her inspiration stays fresh, revealing a commitment to her career that’s apparent in her three-time spot on The Knot’s annual Best of Weddings list. Wakeman has two daughters with her husband of 12 years, so she knows that love is all about the little things. “I love documenting not only the details of a wedding day but also the unscripted moments happening in between,” Wakeman says. “I know how important it is to have memories to share with family for a lifetime, and I feel honored to help people accomplish that.”

MAKING HER MARK
Ashley Peterson is equally committed to her career and the community
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE
As the daughter of a hard-working Arizona farming family and the youngest of five children, Ashley Peterson grew up knowing she had big shoes to fill. But she would do it in her own way because, at nearly a decade younger than her siblings, Peterson is in a different generation than any of them. She’s a millennial. Despite how some people negatively stereotype this generation, Peterson continues to prove them wrong. “I believe a person’s actions in the workplace and the community speak volumes,” says Peterson, who began volunteering at nonprofits more than a decade ago through her church. During high school, the seeds of leadership and community service grew as Peterson began helping her father – a farmer-turned-real estate executive – in his business while competing in tennis and serving on student council. “My father has been with Pioneer Title Agency for decades,” Peterson says. “Something that always stuck with me was the family-owned business’ commitment to service – to its employees, its customers, and any Arizonan in need.” Peterson was similarly focused on commitment to her studies and those in need. When Hurricane Katrina hit, for example, Peterson helped set up a school-wide fundraiser, collecting more than $15,000. She also competed on an international level in high school through DECA, a leadership development association. While at Arizona State University, her sorority (Alpha Chi Omega) gained national acclaim after an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show helped them raise $10,000 for Arizona’s A New Leaf. After college in 2016, she joined her father at Pioneer, which has seven branches throughout greater Scottsdale alone. By 2018, she earned a leadership role in marketing and business development. “Along the way, my family had the chance to participate in Pioneer’s 30th anniversary community outreach program, Take a Hike, where team members collectively completed the 800-mile Arizona National Scenic Trail while raising more than $50,000 for its continued maintenance,” Peterson says. “I’m also passionate about Pioneer’s current Old School initiative, where we volunteer time and raise funds for local schools.” Clearly, Peterson, who is also now a cycle instructor at Cycle Ave., isn’t your average 25-year-old, but a millennial putting in work to make a difference.

PREP IN HIS STEP
Creating a polished look comes naturally to Ryan Weissmueller
BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY
Ryan Weissmueller doesn’t consider himself a trendsetter, but his clean and preppy style naturally lends itself to classic, professional looks that can go from day to night with ease. Though he lives by his three Fs – faith, family and friends – Weissmueller shares, “It’s fun to talk about another F – fashion!” The founder of Fintrepid Solutions, a financial consulting firm that helps companies grow, Weissmueller takes pride in his career-driven appearance but leaves room for color, especially a loud pair of socks to complete his everyday look. “Fun socks allow me to express myself without shouting from the rooftops,” he shares. “I like patterns and colors. I can’t remember the last time I wore a plain white dress shirt.” Being in the industry of client services, the stylish father of two is constantly on the move, so he relies on comfortable staples such as TravisMathew and Mizzen+Main shirts that stay wrinkle-free no matter where his profession takes him. Weissmueller’s closet is full of options that allow him to dress for any occasion, and when he feels the need to make an addition to his wardrobe he heads to Nordstrom, where he depends on the expertise of stylist Duane Althoff.
Tell us your No. 1 style tip. Be yourself. Wear what you like and what feels comfortable. Live in your own skin, and don’t try to impress others. What would someone say if they looked in your closet? It’s very organized and full of lots of color, especially purple. What are your favorite stores? Nordstrom for the variety and good value and Tempe-based Sportiqe for pure comfort and fit with a stylish look.

ART IN MOTION
Jean Marie Clarke’s style is derived from her passion for textiles
BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY
Artist, designer and textile connoisseur Jean Marie Clarke prefers clothes with an eclectic edge when it comes to both dressing herself and designing her Pax Philomena collections. Pax Philomena pairs vibrant Indian block prints with timeless Italian style, resulting in pieces that invoke beauty, color and comfort. Naturally, much of Clarke’s own style is reflected in her clothing line. As the daughter of a dressmaker, the India native has an aesthetic that marries a passion for color and craftsmanship with an appreciation for European style that embodies the essence of all things Italian. Clarke’s connections to India and Italy — she studied abroad in Rome and worked for a textile mill in Italy — and her travels have greatly influenced her worldly designs. “My style is influenced by style icons from the countries that I visit for work,” she says. “For example, the designs for the hand-block prints are inspired by traditional Indian patterns, to which I add a Western flair and update with modern colors.” Clarke’s vibrant closet holds a treasure trove of designer pieces with deeply rooted stories. From her one-of-a-kind Emilio Pucci silk shirt that was made for Grace Kelly to the patent leather Prada sandals that have traveled the world with her, you’ll rarely find the designer without a pop of color.
What are your favorite brands? For clothing, after my own brand, Roberto Cavalli. He makes clothing that is fun, exciting, of good quality, and very wearable. For bags, I love Gucci. For shoes, I love Prada and Fratelli Rossetti. Do you have any favorite trends this season? I am all about pattern and color. Of course, coral is a strong contender for this season – it is a color that is universally flattering. I also believe in 100 percent natural fibers, especially for summer. What is your No. 1 style tip? Wear color! Do not be afraid. Color makes people happy and makes them smile.

IRIS AND JERRY FRIELING
SPOTLIGHT ON INTERIOR DESIGN: Tina Mellino, Zia Interiors What style is your home? Transitional moving toward soft contemporary. Where did your home design inspiration come from? Our love of entertaining in a casual environment that is warm and inviting. Our designer, Tina Mellino, has worked closely with us twice since 2009 to achieve what feels like a new home without having to leave the neighborhood we love. What did you change about the house to make it yours? We have completed four remodel phases: In 2003, we did an office addition and remodeled the kitchen; in 2009, we did a master bath and guest bath remodel along with complete house redecorating; in 2011, we did a backyard remodel; and in 2017, we completely remodeled our main living area with updates to the guest bath and kitchen. What is your favorite part of your home? Our open-concept living room, dining room, family room and kitchen. It is perfect for entertaining as well as day-to-day living. What item in your home do you love the most? Our favorite is the four-chair sitting and conversation area that greets you as you enter from the front door. The orange chairs with gold accents and the gold shag area rug, along with the adjacent painting and wallpaper, were pulled together perfectly by Tina. Describe your home in three words: Welcoming, casual-elegant and relaxing. What makes your home unique? Our open-concept great room. We wanted our home to feel like a resort, so we captured some of the same features that you find in hospitality resort design. An open bar area, a big flat-screen TV, fireplaces and water features, a chef’s table in the kitchen, and a spectacular outdoor area. Favorite event hosted at your home: Our annual Valentine’s Day party, which is attended by over 60 people and has a DJ and a professional photographer.

JONATHAN SACKS
SPOTLIGHT ON HOME BUILD: Elbert Adams, Rainmaker Construction What is the style of your home? Modern. Where did your home design inspiration come from? I am very fortunate to have a mom with a good eye for design! That and Pinterest. How was the process of building your home? I have always dreamed of living on Camelback Mountain. I spent a year in and out of contracts before I found the perfect property. At first, the plan was a light remodel, but I realized that the only way to increase the value was to rebuild. It was my first time building, and I had no idea what I was doing. I was very hands-on. Lots of great referrals and many hours on-site got me exactly what I wanted. What is your favorite part of your home? Easy ‌ the negative-edge pools! Nothing beats soaking in the hot tub watching the sun set over the Phoenix city skyline. It is epic. What item in your home do you love the most? That would be a piece of art I bought with my fiancee on a trip to Mexico City. It is a sculpture of a lady with open arms that sits on the coffee table welcoming people as they walk into the home. Describe your home in three words: Built to entertain. What makes your home unique? It is less about the home and more about the property. The woman who previously owned the home was featured in several magazines for her amazing garden of plants and flowers that cover the front yard. Aside from that, I love the fire pit with the built-in outdoor movie projector. Favorite event hosted at your home: My company, PUSH Agency, created an organization called PUSH for Love. In December 2016, we hosted the PUSH Holiday Soiree and raised $10,000 for Heal International, an organization that protects vulnerable and trafficked children. So Scottsdale! April ‘19

SCOTT GRIGG AND ADRIANNA BAUM
SPOTLIGHT ON ARCHITECTURE: Erik Peterson and Stuart Jon Traynor, PHX Architecture What is the style of your home? Contemporary. Where did your home design inspiration come from? We wanted something unique that hasn’t been done in Arizona. We got a lot of inspiration from the Bird Streets in Los Angeles. How was the process of building your home? Scott: My career is residential real estate (with The Grigg’s Group) so I am very familiar with the process. I also have the privilege of being the listing agent for Cullum Homes’ communities so it was fun to be on the other side and get to see the process from the customer side. It’s very rewarding to see your dreams come to reality. What is your favorite part of your home? Our upstairs patio that runs the entire length of our home. It can host up to 100 people comfortably and has some of the best views in town. This is where we spend a lot of our time. What item in your home do you love the most? Art pieces that we have collected over the years at Art Basel in South Beach, Miami. We also spend a lot of time in our media room watching sports or movies. Describe your home in three words. Sleek, sexy and well-built! What makes your home unique? The architecture is very unique for Arizona. It has a Hollywood Hills type of feel. We also were able to get a five-car garage for a hillside home, which is very difficult to accomplish. Our community is also unique in that it is only comprised of seven homes that all are required to maintain a contemporary design. Favorite event hosted at your home: We hosted our first Thanksgiving this past year. We were able to set up a table on the patio that dined 35 people, and it showed us how well our home entertains. We even heated the pool for all the kids and dogs to swim after we ate.

JOEL NAMIE AND KIRA MEEKER SPOTLIGHT ON LANDSCAPE DESIGN: Kirk Bianchi, Bianchi Design
What is the style of your home? Built? Southwest. Today? Midcentury modern wannabe. Where did your home design inspiration come from? Our inspiration came from an appreciation for a clean, modern aesthetic. Also, a love for some midcentury modern classics and raw materials like steel, concrete and wood. What did you change about the house to make it yours? We brightened it up with big sliding glass doors along the back of the house (and lots of white paint) and simplified the design by choosing quiet colors and materials. What is your favorite part of your home? We recently remodeled our backyard, and we’re loving it! It has doubled our living space and has become our favorite place to hang out and to entertain. What item in your home do you love the most? Our Eames lounge chair. It’s beautiful from every angle. It makes us happy just looking at it. Describe your home in three words: Comfortable, sophisticated and unfussy. What makes your home unique? Our backyard. The designer, Kirk Bianchi; the concrete guy; and the steel guys we worked with are all tremendously talented artists, and they did outstanding work on our project. As a result, the backyard has a very special, private, Zen-like resort feel. Favorite event hosted at your home: We host an annual Christmas Eve party for family and friends. The weather is usually beautiful so we can open all the doors to the backyard, the house is lit with holiday lights, the tree is up, and the fireplaces inside and out are roaring. It’s become a fun, festive tradition.

SPOTLIGHT ON LIVING ROOM DESIGN: Sophia Greenberg, Gossip Interior Design What is the style of your home? Traditional transitional with Southwest flair. Where did your home design inspiration come from? We toured many homes, which lent inspiration, and also from the beautiful desert views that surround the house. How was the process of building your home? This was not the first new home we have built, and we were very involved in the plans and every part of the design. The process was slow, as it took two long years to build it, but it came out great. What is your favorite part of your home? The great room, which was decorated by Sofia Greenberg of Gossip Interiors. It is comfortable and elegant with picturesque views. What item in your home do you love the most? We cannot choose just one; rather, it’s an entire concept that we love. The furniture that Sophia custom-designed for us fits our style and vision, while creating an inviting and warm atmosphere that meets our needs. Describe your home in three words: Inviting, restful and quiet. What makes your home unique? The uniqueness of our home is the large, one-of-a-kind peninsula lot, with a wash on both sides of the home. The backyard views over the negative-edge pool and putting green are just outstanding! Favorite event hosted at your home: We have had a number of birthday celebrations, homeowners association meetings, and numerous other gatherings and parties in our home. It’s hard to pick a favorite because we’ve enjoyed them all.

TIMOTHY HARRIS SPOTLIGHT ON HOME DECOR: Relics
What is the style of your home? Midcentury modern-inspired. Where did your home design inspiration come from? From the eclectic pieces collected on buying trips all over the world for my home decor and consignment shop, Relics. What did you change about the house to make it yours? I changed everything before moving in and learned a lot along the way. I replaced the windows, flooring, wall finishes, lighting, and fireplace as well as gutted the bathrooms and kitchen and did new landscaping. Many of my furnishings are darker antiques, and I selected dark hardwood flooring. What is your favorite part of your home? The 10-foot ceilings, eight-foot doors, and full-height windows. I like a symmetrical floor plan and the layout of this home is centered on an axis that runs from the front door through the house and into the garden. What item in your home do you love the most? That’s really difficult. After 60 buying trips to Europe and importing 85 containers of goods over the past 17 years, I’ve seen a lot of beautiful furnishings and have cycled many through my home. There are a few things I will probably never let go of – one is an antique iron oak leaf wreath I bought at a fair in Provence. I’ve incorporated it into photo shoots at the shop, and every time it’s on the sales floor, people make a beeline for it. Describe your home in three words: Layered, inviting and evolving. What makes your home unique? Every single piece has a past with a story to tell, and I enjoy refining and changing things to keep it fresh and dynamic. Favorite event hosted at your home: It’s a toss-up between dressy Christmas Eve buffets and spring brunch by the pool.

DESERT MOUNTAIN
JULIE AND BOB CLARK
SPOTLIGHT ON HOME BUILD: Phil Nichols, The Phil Nichols Company What is the style of your home? Southwest desert meets soft contemporary. Where did your home design inspiration come from? We wanted an open feeling with a lot of windows that would bring the light and beauty of the desert into the house. Our team – builder Phil Nichols, architect Bryan Rains, and designers Claire Ownby and Angelica Henry – made the dream a reality. How was the process of building your home? We previously had a home built from scratch on New Jersey’s Barnegat Bay, so we were familiar with the process and how difficult it could be, but everyone involved in this project made it very easy for us. What is your favorite part of your home? The great room, which has 180-degree views to the east, south and west, so we get beautiful sunrise and sunset views. The large roof overhangs also provide plenty of shade from the afternoon sun. We especially enjoy evenings when we can open the sliding doors and windows, turn on the outside fire pits, and meld the outside patio area with the interior space. What item in your home do you love the most? The backlit onyx bar that provides a soft glow and adds warmth to the lounge in the evenings, and the glass-enclosed wine storage area that separates the dining room and the lounge, yet still allows an open feeling. Describe your home in three words: Peaceful, inviting and picturesque. What makes your home unique? The openness of the doors and windows provides a light and airy feeling, yet the distance to the neighbors also provides privacy. Favorite event hosted at your home: While our home is well-suited for entertainment, we prefer more intimate gatherings of up to four couples. Of course, our favorite entertaining is when the grandchildren come over for holidays.

WALT BROWN JR. AND DR. RUTH RASSEL SPOTLIGHT ON HOME DESIGN: Deb Malone and Connor Malone, Malone Design
What is the style of your home? Classic contemporary with an emphasis on style and comfort. Where did your home design inspiration come from? Our lifestyle – we love to host family gatherings and entertain. We were inspired by, and included, entryways with cozy coves accented with uplit countertops and happy, colorful artwork. Modern Asian hotels were also an influence, which draw some of the best current designers. What did you change about the house to make it yours? We transformed beloved Italian arches and busted through walls to create an open flow. Dark woods turned into modern grays and bright colors that pop. Two seethrough wine cellars were created on either side of the dining room table to complement the room. What is your favorite part of your home? It’s a tie between our master quarters – which houses the second-floor gym, two massive walk-in closets, and a white marble bathroom – and our inviting cocktail lounge. What item in your home do you love the most? Our family sectional. We love cozy mornings in front of the fireplace with our feet up, enjoying the Golf Channel, cuddles and family time reflecting on the day. Describe your home in three words: Elegant, cozy and welcoming. What makes your home unique? The property. It sits upon a double lot overlooking the Gainey Ranch Golf Club. It’s almost completely on one level, and despite the vastness, it remains homey and inviting. Favorite event hosted at your home: Definitely Christmas and Ruth’s birthday gathering two days prior. The entryway and formal living room showcase a welcoming holiday tree during our favorite time of year.

CURATING WORLD TREASURES Darlene Richert of Avery Lane
Imagine sipping a glass of Prosecco and humming to a French tune while browsing an airy 12,000 square-foot showroom of the very top brands including Maitland Smith, Theodore Alexander, Restoration Hardware, etc. offered at a fraction of the retail prices. This is the enchanting experience Avery Lane offers to its clients. Specializing in luxury consignments with a focus on designer furnishings, European antiquities, and collectible art work, Avery Lane is the place to shop for unique finds and surprising discounts. “Expect the extraordinary” is what store owner, Darlene Richert, and her staff strive to deliver. To assist clients with first-rate service is King Charles Cavalier, Ringo, the loveable VP of Public Relations. Richert started Avery Lane in 2012 after deciding it was time to reinvent herself. “I’d always loved the treasure trove shops in Paris, London, Barcelona, New York, and San Francisco, and didn’t feel like Scottsdale had anything like it.” Avery Lane is an attractive destination shopping spot since it’s where local sports celebrities, CEO’s, business owners, and other Valley elites bring collections from their travels. “My showroom is a true treasure trove of items from all over the world and it changes like a Parisian merry-go-round,” Richert says. Avery Lane is also a resource for some of the Valley’s top designers. “It’s a thrill and honor to witness their creativity and play a small role in creating unbelievable spaces,” Richert says. Richert’s nickname is “Shop Girl,” which she admits is “kind
of Frenchy.” She seeks to mix things up to create an entirely different, one-of-a-kind look. “I’m passionate about helping people bring out their unique personalities in their home and not create copycat looks.” Combined with 25 years of experience in the private golf arena and viewing many exquisite homes, and her own decorating hobby, it’s no surprise that Richert is a successful businesswoman. “I guess you could say I have a Master’s from HGTV, Elle Décor Magazine, and House Beautiful,” she jokes. Richert is a member of the EO-Entrepreneur’s Organization (one of a select few women) and honored to be serving on the Board for the Arizona Chapter. Among their many awards, Avery Lane has been named #1 consignment store in the state by Ranking AZ in 2019. For the past seven years, Avery Lane has been a proud corporate sponsor for the Scottsdale Philharmonic. The shop has hosted two annual fundraisers for a breast cancer survivor organization, and also supports Rosie’s House to provide music lessons to underprivileged children in Phoenix. Personally, Richert “feels the arts are so important to the success and vitality of a community” and contributes to several local theater organizations. “I am fearless about putting things together and taking design risks, and that’s what I try to inspire in my clients. Have fun and take a few chances—that’s when your home comes alive,” Richert says. Contact Darlene Richert of Avery Lane by calling 480.991.0700, or visit www.averylanehome.com.

WHEN FUN MEETS LUXURY DESIGN Erik Peterson, Gene Kniaz, & Ron Skoog of PHX Architecture
Started in 2002, PHX Architecture is a full-service architecture firm specializing in luxury residential, golf clubhouse, and boutique hospitality. The concept of “living architecture” is everything to this firm and its founder, Erik Peterson. “We don’t produce drawings, we create an experience,” he says. Peterson, along with Gene Kniaz and Ron Skoog, believe communication between architect and client is a top priority. “One of my roles is helping our clients as they’re making their journey to create something meaningful,” Kniaz says. “Trust and connection needs to be mutual between a client and myself. The process takes a long time and we want to have fun along the way,” Peterson says. To PHX, a successful working relationship involves the architect actively listening, building a repertoire with each client, and fully focusing on the wants and needs of the client. That way the process is not only successful, but fun as well. With many repeat customers and referrals, it is no surprise the architects of PHX Architecture have many notable mentions, including Best of HOUZZ Design, Luxe Red, and Gold Nugget awards. PHX’s award-winning designs have been featured by many publications including, So Scottsdale, Modern Luxury, Luxe, Interiors, Phoenix Home & Garden, and Wall Street Journal. PHX Architecture specializes in designing luxury, custom residential, boutique hospitality, distinctive dining, and clubhouses. After graduating with a Master’s degree in Architecture
from ASU, Erik Peterson gained a highly sought after internship which led him to work on original Frank Lloyd Wright designs. “I chose a career in architecture because it’s something I enjoy and it doesn’t seem like a job,” he says. Kniaz focuses on the residential side of the firm, specifically regionally appropriate traditional styles. He believes that good design shows simplicity and restraint, while also honoring and enhancing the client’s vision. He was awarded a Governor’s Heritage Preservation Honor Award and a Gold Nugget Award of Merit for an extensive renovation of a 1931 local adobe residence. With a specialty in commercial design and focusing on hospitality, Skoog is a LEED Accredited Professional for sustainable design. Out of the many sustainable design projects he has delivered, the most unique were an Audubon nature center constructed of straw bale walls and a civic office building of rammed earth construction. Whether the hospitality client is boutique, or a 4-5 star resort, Skoog supports the practice that good design will have an awareness for sustainability regardless of LEED certification or not. “With each and every project, our firm’s goal is to fulfill our clients’ dreams by creating an experience that leaves them with lifelong memories. To us design is personal and experiential, which sets our firm apart,” says Erik Peterson. To contact Erik Peterson, Gene Kniaz, and Ron Skoog, call 480.477.1111 or visit www.phxarch.com.

BUILDING DREAMS Phil Nichols of The Phil Nichols Company
For almost 24 years, The Phil Nichols Company has been the premier company for building high-end custom homes and renovations. The company specializes in project oversight from inception until completion. Owner, Phil Nichols, and his team of talented, reliable professionals work diligently to manage every detail of the building process. “Our focus is on the client, knowing that each client is different with different needs,” Nichols says. Nichols grew up in the home building business. “My father was a custom home builder and so I have been around project sites since I was a small kid. Custom home building is all I’ve ever done.” Nichols has been developing relationships with the very best architects and home designers in the southwest since starting his company in 1995. He hires quality professionals, striving to deliver excellence to all of his clients. His reputation for quality construction and outstanding personalized service testify to the client care he practices. Despite being a small company, Nichols is personally involved in every phase of the building process. “In working one-on-one with our clients, I feel we have a closeness and connected relationship with our clientele that’s hard to beat.” Thousands of decisions come into play with building a custom home, ranging from hundreds of material choices, design options, and lot challenges. Nichols strives to ensure his clients are well-informed about the process and that they feel
confident making decisions that are right for them. “I believe that time spent in preplanning in the beginning saves a great deal of time during the construction process. It’s important to take the time during the initial meetings to make sure they know what building a custom home entails. Many of our clients have built new homes before, for others this may be their first experience,” Nichols says. To help clients with the building process, Nichols developed a cost estimating software that allows him to give preliminary estimates for clients’ dream homes well before the architectural plans are completed. “The goal being to do our best to keep the architectural outcome within their financial reach, and to be able to make their project a reality,” he explains. SEAMLESS SOPHISTICATION Sophia Greenberg of Gossip Interior Design
The design of a house should be as unique as the people who call it home. A harmonious combination of textures, colors, and a unified flow is what Sophia Greenberg of Gossip Interior Design delivers to her clients. By merging classic design elements with contemporary flair, she creates spaces that evoke emotion. Blending her extensive experience in music with her passion for design, Sophia brings seamless sophistication to any project. “Interior design is music that has stopped in time. Every home can have a standard sofa and set of chairs. A designer can take those elements and make them unique. When a client enters their home, it should be in harmony with their taste,” she says. Sophia takes an intuitive yet professional approach to design, creating spaces that are comfortable, livable, and stimulating. Her ability to take risks and draw on clients’ true taste and style make for highly individualized, lasting design. The best thing about Sophia’s approach is her blend of practicality and luxury that results in a beautiful, unified design to accentuate any environment. After remodeling houses and helping friends redecorate their homes, Sophia turned her passions to design. Sophia started Gossip Interior Design in 2014 after graduating with distinction from American Institute of Interior Design. As a member of IFDA, Sophia participated in the 2018 IFDA Arizona’s
Take a Seat Gala Auction, where her up-cycled chair, inspired by “Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” by Georges Seura raised the most money with proceeds going to the Military Assistance Mission. With an eye for custom pieces, a unique sense of style, and a client-centered approach to business, Sophia has proven herself as an innovative designer. By showing the possibilities beyond beige and brown, she guides her clients through every phase of the design process. “I work to find the best pieces that are within a client’s budget to make their home comfortable and stylish, focusing on their goals and taste.” Sophia remains committed to cultivating valued relationships and helping clients reach the best version of their vision. “Keeping communication open with my clients is key,” she says. With extensive experience working with clients in North Scottsdale and Paradise Valley, Sophia is constantly on the lookout for the latest trends in interior design. When the perfect artwork can’t be found, Sophia creates one-of-a-kind pieces by working with various mediums, including acrylic, paints, and ceramics. “I live and breathe creativity.” Sophia says. PASSION FOR INSPIRING Timothy Harris of Relics
A luxury home consignment boutique, Relics is the place for one-of-a-kind items from around the world. But Relics is more than a place for interesting finds. Owner and designer, Timothy Harris, shares his passion for design by helping his clients discover and define their own tastes, then applying that to their homes. Each design by Harris is exclusive and as unique as his clients. By walking through a client’s house and asking questions about how items and rooms are utilized, Harris gains insight as to what works best for the individual client. “Beyond experience, I really listen to people to understand their needs,” he says. Looking for ways to make a client feel more at home or to improve functionality with upholstery, furnishings, color, and decorative details are what Harris does best. He specializes in a blend of antiques, inspired European countryside, and reclaimed objects to beautifully fuse with contemporary design. “I enjoy suggesting new ways to work with what they have and how they can improve overall aesthetic,” he says. He believes in quality over quantity and delivers only the highest standards to his clients. After the consultation, Harris presents a client with several options. Harris delivers and places pieces for the client to see before any final decision is made. “Design chose me,” Harris says. In his previous career as corporate accountant, he channeled his creative energies into
home improvement projects. Eventually this led to the creation of Relics in 2002 with his late husband, Todd Zillweger. “Design has always drawn me in and is a field that I have great passion for.” From his accounting background, Harris learned a lot about the business side of things. “That experience has taught me how to be cost effective and efficient with all of the design work we provide for our clients,” he says. His resourcefulness and extensive experience designing for clients and working with vendors to procure items speaks for itself in referrals, and earned Relics a HOUZZ award for Best of Service. Whether it is refreshing the look of an entire home or designing a specific area, Harris loves thinking outside the box. He is adept at acquiring and placing the right furniture, lighting, or artwork for color cohesion and to give the space a welcoming feel. Harris shares his knowledge and keen eye for detail on his website blog, “The Design Files,” allowing anyone the opportunity to glance inside a master designer’s head. “Good design enhances our experience with our home and outdoor spaces. I particularly enjoy discovering imaginative solutions that work for the homeowner, which ultimately make every day spaces more inspiring,” he says. THE ESSENCE OF CREATIVITY Jaque Bethke of Jaque Bethke Design
Jaque Bethke possesses thirty-five years in the architecture and design industry working on many projects including building hotels, casinos, spas, and retail. Her work is often described as “memorable environments that stand the test of time, with jaw-dropping results.” An architecture and design company, Jaque Bethke Design, Jaque models it after her no-limits philosophy. “Design has to defy the so-called limits so it can take you beyond where you thought you could go,” she says. Jaque respects her clients and does what it takes to deliver their vision, whether it be a business or a home, a place to play or a piece of furniture. “There are a lot of other options when it comes to architecture and design, but it comes down to people. I will work hard for the client.” She approaches each project as a new experience. Factors come into play, depending on the project scope and goals of the client, that lend to Jaque’s individualized approach. “I think that every relationship requires a unique approach and, as a designer, I have to understand the needs of the client. There is not one set way to educate, we learn together. And I also like to have fun along the way.” Pulling inspiration from her surroundings, Jaque possesses the soul of an artistic inventor. Not only is she a brilliant designer and architect, but she has her own line of wallpaper, textiles, furniture, and shoes. “I believe in design
as something that’s meant to evolve with everything else around us.” Jaque has earned the trust of her clients and manufacturers with her willingness to go above and beyond for the project and for her client. She holds true to the craftsmanship and exactness of architecture and design, and she’s not afraid to get her hands dirty. “I can design skyscrapers and I can lay tile. I can roof a house and I can lay carpet. I can scrub floors and I can hang art installations. There is no better skill than the ones you learn ‘on the job.’” She studied at the prestigious School of Architecture at Taliesin. It comes as no surprise that with Jaque’s high standards she has earned over 105 national awards for her work, and has been featured in national magazines that include Vogue, AD, Bonappetit, and many more. As an extraordinarily intuitive designer, Jaque aims to capture the true spirit of her clients’ styles and personalities. She is often told by her clients that she knows them better than they know themselves. “From the time I was a child, I have felt the energy of design. I can never remember wanting to do anything else but study the design of human beings, how they work, how they live, how they feel,” Jaque says. VISIONARY MASTER Kirk Bianchi of Bianchi Design
Kirk Bianchi, owner of Bianchi Design, stands apart from the rest by first taking a big picture approach to outdoor spaces, noticing how the various elements work as an integrated whole. Then, Bianchi’s uncanny attention to detail elevates his exquisitely crafted creations to a whole new level. “My motto is ‘Outdoor living as an art form,’” he says. “I bring together the three disciplines—landscape, pool, and exterior architecture—for the ultimate fusion of total outdoor lifestyle design.” Bianchi likes to oversee the onsite execution of his designs to ensure the smallest details are met. He works with only a few clients at a time to deliver high-quality work. “I enjoy working with those who are open to creative and innovative ways of making their indoor/outdoor living spaces into more than what they dreamed was possible,” he says. Bianchi has several notable mentions including being named Master of the Southwest by Phoenix Home & Garden, Best of HOUZZ for Service and Design, and named “Coolest Pool Designer” by Phoenix Magazine. Numerous projects have been feature on television and in print. He has also had the honor of serving on the advisory board for Garden Design Magazine. Bianchi’s exceptional attention to detail lends him a unique insight and vision for a space. “I have an eye for what matters and what not to do. I see critical factors that most
would overlook. For instance, I have seen elaborate pool and landscapes awkwardly placed too close to a property wall with ugly objects in the background that remain unscreened. Instead, a tree should have been placed to block the unsightly object. How did they miss that?” Part of what sets Bianchi apart is his unique, systematic design process that he goes through with each of his clients. This takes the guesswork and the overwhelm out of the client experience. “There is comfort in understanding the sequence and knowing what to expect in terms of priorities,” he explains. Being a perfectionist means that Bianchi never stops educating himself so that he may deliver the best designs to each client. As an experienced designer, he stands behind his recommendations to a client with successful past examples. “I want a client to feel confident in taking the leap with me,” he says. “Living spaces affect us just as powerfully as music, but somehow we have a much higher tolerance for discord in our built world. I love the delight my clients exude when I finally ‘tune’ and ‘harmonize’ the design of their home and gardens, and take away the noise they didn’t realize was there. Our living spaces should be just as expressive and as emotionally impactful as our favorite music that moves us,” Bianchi says. To me, those last added touches of installed windows and doors really gives the feeling of home.” In this photo, the home was built by Two Hawks Designs. With a degree in Marketing, Phil also holds a general contracting license for Arizona. He also holds a NABCEP certification, providing peace of mind to clients that they are receiving the highest quality energy efficient products. Out of high school, he worked on jobsites and did framing. “Construction is always interesting, always different,” he says. It is easy to see why many of the clients who come to DMI are from referrals. Those who work with Phil are not disappointed. Through his unwavering reliability and consistency, he is able to visualize what the clients want as the end result and then work backward to achieve the result. “We want the end result to be what the client envisioned, not just for us to have made another sale,” he says. FUNCTIONALITY MEETS CREATIVITY Deb Malone & Connor Malone of Malone Design
A custom-built home calls for custom home furnishings to complete the perfect dream home, and that’s exactly what Malone Design, a division of JP Malone Construction, Inc. does. Headed by Deb Malone and Connor Malone, a mother-daughter duo, Malone Design provides the perfect blend of creativity and functionality to any custom design project. “Interior design has always been a creative outlet for both of us,” Deb says. The switch from construction to interior design came naturally for Deb. “When I started working alongside my husband in our construction company, I noticed our completed homes not being furnished in a way that accentuated the prominent architectural design.” She began offering design services to clients, so that these unique, custom homes didn’t miss an element to shine. In addition to design, the company offers its clients construction and remodeling services. Connor says that growing up, the unveiling of a client’s home was exciting and turned her eye to interior decorating. “The hectic, creative chaos was my favorite part because I knew I would get to see the smile (and sometimes happy tears) on our client’s face when we revealed their dream home.” Desiring to provide their clients with only the highest quality work, Deb and Connor truly listen to the needs of the client. They understand each house is one-of-a-kind, just like their clients. “As designers, we don’t feel the need to change our client’s style. Instead, we integrate our work with our client’s needs to create
the perfect unity of functionality and design,” Deb says. JP Malone Construction, Inc. and Malone Design have earned several awards that include Best in American Living, Masters of the Southwest, America’s Best Builder, and Best in Service from HOUZZ. Their work has been featured on the cover of numerous magazines over the years. Deb and Connor specialize in creating distinctive pieces. “I believe that design should always incorporate fun elements that excite our clients,” Connor says. “Design pieces are not only aesthetically pleasing, but are crafted with an idea of purpose,” says Deb. To help clients integrate original designs into their homes, Malone Design creates custom drapery and bedding, and even has an in-house custom woodwork team. “We work hand-in-hand with our clients. Meaning, if their current home has beloved pieces that they can’t part ways with, we will always find a way of refurbishing those pieces to work in their new home,” Deb explains. Together, this mother-daughter duo complements each other perfectly. “Our job as designer’s is to constantly push new ideas and creative marks while continually giving our client’s a space that has true meaning and function,” both Deb and Connor agree. To contact Deb & Connor, please call 480.443.0201, or visit www.jpmalone.com.

No Mojo? No Problem
Drs. Cristina Romero-Bosch and John A. Robinson can help turn your sex life around Sexual desire is a part of what makes us human. But sometimes that desire can dwindle for reasons that are out of our control. Hormones being one of them. And if you’re reading this thinking, ‘I’m young. I don’t need to worry about my hormones going out of whack until I’m much older,’ think again. Imbalances in cortisol (the main stress hormone), thyroid, estrogen and testosterone happen throughout one’s life, not just when they are old and gray. If your mojo is a no-go lately, it’s likely a hormonal issue. That’s when you call Cristina RomeroBosch and John A. Robinson, The Sex Docs. This husband-and-wife team owns and operates The Hormone Zone in Scottsdale. Their practice offers holistic and comprehensive solutions and advanced hormone replacement therapies
that optimize one’s health and overall wellbeing. A happy and healthy sex life is a key component in overall wellness, which is why these doctors also specialize in treating sexual dysfunction issues in both men and women. “We call ourselves The Sex Docs because we want to provide an open and honest dialogue with improving sexuality and relationships,” Robinson says. In addition to optimizing a patient’s hormones to help restore their libido, the couple also treats the tissue directly by administering an Orgasm (O) Shot into women and a Priapus (P) Shot into men. They do this by extracting the patient’s blood, known as Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), and injecting it into the vagina or penis. It is an extremely beneficial and minimally invasive therapy that rejuvenates the tissue, enhances sensitivity and
improves performance. “For women, it can specifically help with urinary incontinence. For men, it can help with erectile dysfunction and even increase the size of the penis,” Bosch adds. So, who can benefit from hormone and regenerative therapies like the ones offered at The Hormone Zone? Anyone! It’s never too early or too late to put some extra oomph into your sex life. “Together with a comprehensive lifestyle approach to health and hormones, along with regenerative therapies like the O and P Shot, the best possible outcomes can be achieved for our patients,” Robinson says. GateWay Community College celebrates 50 years with its fashionable fundraiser, Runway to Success
BY MANDY HOLMES
Pairing fashionable fun with encouraging education, GateWay Community College will host Runway to Success on April 26 at The Clayton House in Old Town Scottdale. Featuring an artfully curated collection of vintage fashion, live and silent auctions, and a “see and be seen” scene, the event will showcase GateWay’s own students walking the runway and sharing inspirational stories of their college journey. As one of the Maricopa County Community Colleges, GateWay is located in Phoenix, with three campuses across the city. The school is recognized for providing a path to employment for a predominantly nontraditional student body through unique certificate, trade, technical, and apprenticeship programs – including those in automotive, information technology, health sciences, and nursing – not available elsewhere. For many of its students, GateWay is the first stop toward a four-year university. Runway to Success helps support GateWay’s programs that focus on helping nontraditional students succeed, such as the school’s Children’s Learning Center, which provides an on-campus childcare facility for parents attending the community college. Although many people attend the trendy fundraiser for the fashion, the real stars of the show are the students. Jeanne Ratliff, director of community partnerships at GateWay, shares that the school’s goal is to raise $50,000 through the event to support student success and retention initiatives. “It’s GateWay’s privilege to present our students and programs to our community of donors and partners through this event. Early intervention and mentoring programs are key to student success, which, in turn, contributes to a strong

WORKING WITH WOOD Cal Vander Kooi’s hands-on approach to creating functional, one-of-a-kind art
BY HEATHER LYNN HORVAT
Cal Vander Kooi had his first taste of woodturning – the craft of making objects in wood using a lathe and handheld tools – in 2009 while visiting his brother-in-law in Colorado, who had recently taken a woodturning class. “My wife and kids bought some tools for Christmas that year, and since then my work area has grown,” he says. An active member of the Arizona Woodturners Association, Vander Kooi is primarily self-taught, guided by natural instincts and a “desire to look inside the wood.” “What used to be firewood is now a piece of raw material waiting to be turned,” Vander Kooi says. “I view each piece as an individual. Pieces of wood will sit in my workshop for days or even weeks before I decide what should be made from them.” Once inspiration hits, Vander Kooi lets his hands do the work. While he often begins with a finished product in mind, sometimes the final piece will change after several layers of wood are revealed. “I like the wood to show its inner beauty,” he says. Most of the wood Vander Kooi transforms on his lathe is locally sourced, primarily from landscapers. “I take the wood that would otherwise end up in the dump. Monsoon season is great because the heavy winds knock down a lot of trees – mostly mesquite, olive, acacia and sissoo,” he says. Vander Kooi uses different woods for different projects. “Burl wood grows on the side of a tree and is unique,” he explains, noting that it is often used for more decorative pieces with a satin lacquer finish. Bowls, goblets and utility pieces are usually from a straightgrained wood – and usable items such as these are made foodsafe with an oil finish. Accustomed to working with his hands, woodturning seemed like a natural progression for Vander Kooi. Having been raised on a dairy farm in Minnesota, he then worked as a collision repair specialist until retiring in 2011. Using the skills he acquired while working in collision repair, Vander Kooi sometimes adds color to his pieces by mixing dyes and airbrushing them onto a finished project. A piece entitled Color My World is one of the woodturner’s favorites. “My wife presented me with hundreds of colored pencils and told me to make something. It was a complicated process with curing the resin and allowing time between coats for sanding and polishing, but the final product is an artistic, colorful piece.” Vander Kooi’s work can be seen at On the Edge Gallery in Scottsdale and at his small home gallery in Mesa. Not giving me any drowsy or sleepy feelings, just able to manage a lot better in general without added anxiety and stress. Thank you!” —Klein C. (32) Scottsdale, AZ
“I have been using OCANNA CBD products for over a month now. As a former world class track and field athlete I have put my body through some serious abuse for which I still feel the effects many years later. I am constantly trying new ways to improve joint pain and inflammation so that I can continue to workout effectively and have seen amazing results with the OCANNA CBD products. I recommend these high quality CBD products for anyone that wants their body to feel the best that it can.” —Dean Starkey (52) Queencreek, AZ
“I have been extremely pleased with the Ocanna CBD Cream. I have a nerve problem in my lower legs, causing extreme discomfort. I tried Aleve, to eliminate the tingling pain I get every night, prior to bed. It did not help. I have also tried Aspercreme, but to no avail. I have used Ocanna’s CBD cream for the last 4 nights, and the problem has subsided. It is incredible, and I would recommend it to anyone. Thanks Ocanna.” —Barbara L. (85) Prescott Valley, AZ

2019 GMC SIERRA DENALI The all-new pickup adds a level of luxury to the truck market BY JIM PRUETER
VITAL STATS Base price: $54,700
America has a growing love affair with pickup trucks, the hottest selling vehicle segment on the market. It helps that trucks are now feature-packed, mega-capable and loaded with innovation and impressive high-tech functions that will more than satisfy most truck buyers. The 2019 GMC Sierra Denali has been substantially revised to include new exterior and interior designs; a new active suspension system for a smoother, luxurious ride; two new versions of the 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V-8 engines; and an industry-exclusive multifunction tailgate and carbon fiber rear cargo box. My test Denali trim level – which is the top of the line option out of all offered for the GMC Sierra – has been redesigned from the ground up and is both larger and longer, affording a roomier interior. The overall look is big, imposing, and hard to ignore, mostly due to the massive chrome-clad grille and optional 22-inch wheels. Inside, the library-quiet interior is replete with supple heated and cooled Forge leather-appointed seating; open-pore ash wood trim; and advanced, state-of-the art technology and safety features. There’s a panoramic sunroof, a premium

Bose surround-sound infotainment system, a 360-degree HD Surround Vision camera, an embedded Wi-Fi hotspot, and an impressive complement of advanced safety features that include automatic emergency braking, a driver alert package, a safety teen driver feature, and a rear seat reminder. Something especially attractive to truck drivers is GMC’s innovative MultiPro tailgate, which has six different functions and positions for easier loading, doubles as a standing workstation, and provides easier access to items in the cargo box. You won’t find this on any other pickup. On the road, the Denali’s new, exclusive Adaptive Ride control suspension renders the ride quality nearly as comfortable as a luxury sedan. Power from the optional 6.2-liter V-8 engine comes on quickly and is linear and predictable, delivering ample amounts of power and a connection between driver and truck that enhances the joy of the driving experience. All this adds up to one of the biggest, imposing and most luxurious pickup trucks available on the market. You’ll certainly get no argument from me.

ENCHANTMENT AT THE END OF THE EARTH Newfoundland’s remote Fogo Island sets the scene for an otherworldly escape
BY DAVID DURAN / PHOTOS BY DAVID DURAN
Mostly unknown to the outside world until a 2017 Netflix documentary featured the area and its famous inn, Fogo Island is quickly being added to the bucket lists of travelers seeking to experience things that most haven’t yet seen. It’s the largest of the offshore islands near Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, and the town of Fogo Island was officially created in 2011. And due to Fogo Island’s remote location in the North Atlantic, you’ll have plenty of time to plan your trip before the area is overcome with tourism.
Art & Architecture One of the main reasons people flock to Fogo Island is because of its namesake, visually stunning inn (www.fogoislandinn.ca). Designed by Newfoundland-born, Norway-based architect Todd Saunders, the 43,000-square-foot architectural wonder is perched on stilts along the North Atlantic coastline. The inn is the brainchild of high-tech entrepreneur and native Newfoundlander Zita Cobb and was conceived as a way to save one of Canada’s oldest rural cultures by creating jobs and reinvesting a majority of its profits into the local economy as part of Shorefast Foundation’s innovative Economic Nutrition model. The contemporary, X-shaped structure features a two-story wing containing gathering spaces and a four-story wing, parallel to the coast, containing the 29 guest rooms. The inn has been recognized with a number of distinctions, including TripAdvisor’s 2019 Traveler’s Choice award and National Geographic’s Unique Lodges of the World – and it’s no wonder why. Among the stark beauty of the island itself, the inn is a striking oasis that blends design and nature. Each room has ocean views while other amenities vary but can include a rooftop rock installation, a walk-in shower, a wood stove, and a soaker tub. The inn also has a rooftop lounge, a rooftop sauna, a cinema, an art gallery, and a library. Plus, all meals, snacks, gratuities, excursions, and even a community host to show you around the island are included in the price. One of the inn’s most iconic spaces is its dining room, which features a dramatic vaulted ceiling overlooking the ocean with views of the Barr’d Islands in the distance. Everything found inside the inn was handcrafted or sourced locally, and the attention to detail leaves you breathless – as does the price point (rates start at $1,472 per night). Saunders was also tasked with creating four incredibly unique artist studios that are part of a heavily sought-after, internationally
106
So Scottsdale! April ‘19
known artist-in-residence program (www.fogoislandarts.ca). Each studio is spread out on the island to give artists the feeling of remoteness during their residency on the island. Though the studios are not open to the public, visitors enjoy taking photos of their architecture set against the dramatic landscape. But if an artist is there, he or she just might give you a tour if you ask.
Exploring Flat Earth Brimstone Head, believed by some to be one of the corners of flat earth, is one of the island’s must-see destinations. The easygoing hike to the top mostly consists of walking up a very long makeshift staircase. At the top, the wind is powerful and the views are breathtaking. It’s here where you can start to visualize how this area might be perceived to be a corner of flat earth. To truly get the full perspective behind the theory of the earth being flat, the curious-minded can visit the Museum of the Flat Earth (www.museumoftheflatearth.ca), which has a mission to preserve, investigate, archive and present artifacts relating to flat earth. Although small in size, it’s packed with artifacts and documents that make a case for flat earth. While most Fogo Island residents don’t believe in this theory, the museum still attracts visitors from across the globe.
Gourmet Adventures For digging into the local culinary scene, your first stop should be a reservation at the Fogo Island Inn’s restaurant. Led by executive chef Jonathan Gushue, the culinary team uses ingredients that are fished, farmed and foraged locally – think scallops with parsnips and rhubarb jelly or salt cod and shaved turnip – and the seasonal menu changes daily. The inn has also sprung new restuarants on the island from past employees who were encouraged and helped by the inn along the way. Two delicious options include Bang Belly Cafe (www.bangbelly.com) and Scoff Restaurant (www.scoffrestaurant. com). And for something a bit more accessible, there’s always Beaches Bar & Grill, which offers all the basics at an affordable price. Expect to find fish and chips as well as cod burgers on the menu.
Getting There Gander is likely most recognized as the small Newfoundland town that welcomed 7,000 stranded passengers on September 11, 2001, when all air traffic coming to and from the U.S. was grounded. Gander will be your gateway to Fogo Island, which is accessible by ferry. Or, if you prefer to make an entrance, private helicopter service is also available – just ask Gwyneth Paltrow, who raved about her visit to the inn. Consider extending your trip to explore other parts of Newfoundland, home to Gros Morne National Park in addition to incredible landscapes, friendly hospitality and once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

The newly upgraded Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa offers a unique whale-watching experience
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
Each winter, thousands of humpback whales migrate to Hawaii to give birth to their young. And as winter gives way to spring, the new families prepare for the long journey north to Alaska, where they will spend the summer. In April, seeing these 60-foot, 40-ton animals begin the migration from Maui to Alaska with their calves in tow is a majestic, moving and altogether otherworldly experience – and when it comes to doing it in style, the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa has you covered. Situated on 23 oceanfront acres at the iconic Black Rock on Ka‘anapali Beach, the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa recently completed a $26.5 million renovation which revamped its guest rooms to incorporate colors, textures and artwork that play off of Maui’s vibrant hues as well as the views of neighboring islands Lanai and Molokai. Among the most luxe of the upgrades are enhancements to its deluxe rooms and suites, including the 1,600-square-foot Ali’i suite. This presidential suite is perched atop Black Rock, which features one of the best views of

Ka’anapali – and pods of whales. Families also love the resort’s newly renovated 665-square-foot ‘Ohana (family) suites, which feature two double beds, a pull-down wall bed, and a spacious bathroom stocked with specialty bath amenities. No matter which room you select, if you want to experience the whales, book the “Kohola in Ka‘anapali” package. It includes accommodations as well as whale-themed welcome amenities such as two sets of binoculars to watch the animals from one’s room and a tin of Raw Elements sunscreen – an eco-conscious brand that won’t harm marine life or coral reefs – to use before heading out to see them via tour boat or from the beach. With this package, plenty of other fun is included such as an educational whale talk led by a marine naturalist from Maui Ocean Center, two mai tais from the resort’s Cliff Dive Bar in souvenir cups, and the ultimate excursion: a Maui Whale Watch catamaran experience for two guests with Teralani Sailing Adventures. Excursions take place in the early or mid-morning and are meant to give guests a chance to get up close and personal with the whales without disrupting the animals’ regular routines. During the journey, prepare to admire thrilling breaches as well as whale tail slaps, and – thanks to an underwater hydrophone in each catamaran – expect to hear whales singing below the surface. The fun continues each afternoon on the resort’s beach with stand-up paddleboarding, snorkeling, aqua glider rentals and more. Each evening, there is a sunset cliff diving ceremony at the resort as well. And finally, finish the day at the resort’s all-new signature restaurant, ROCKsalt, led by award-winning executive chef Lyndon Honda and featuring local Hawaiian produce, exotic spices, and globally inspired shared plates. HOPPY SPRING ’Tis the season for IPAs and sours BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
Just as with wine drinkers, beer drinkers’ palates change over time. “Most beer fans started their love affair with beer thanks to lagers like Miller Lite and Bud Lite,” says Steve Ellefson of McFate Brewing Co. “As their tastes mature, so do their beer preferences, which has led to an explosion in popularity of strong, hoppy beers like India Pale Ales – or IPAs – and acidic, tart sours.” With that in mind, here are some IPAs and sours worth a taste this spring.
In the Dark Two Brothers Tap House & Brewery Come over to the dark side with this unique blackberry sour ale. The sour blackberry fruit notes have a touch of roasted coffee and subtle chocolate sweetness for a perfectly balanced treat. www.twobrothersbrewing.com. Rae’s Ruby Red IPA Barrio Brewing Co. This juicy IPA pops in your mouth with a unique blend of Centennial, Citra and Amarillo hops paired with all-natural ruby red grapefruit juice. The result is a touch sweet, certainly sour, and a clearly enhanced version of Barrio’s classic IPA option. www.barriobrewing.com. Big Swell IPA Maui Brewing Co. Brewed with a variety of Northwestern hops, this handcrafted IPA is balanced with Munich and crystal malts. Its flavor begins smooth and malty and is followed by a big burst of citrus, tropical fruit, and piney hops notes. www.mauibrewing.com. Brut IPA Four Peaks Brewing Company “Brut” is used to denote bubbly that’s dry, meaning it has a minimal amount of sweetness. This similarly “bruty” brew gets its dryness via added enzymes that break down the starches in malt further than normal, resulting in a beer that’s low in sweetness yet high in alcohol content. www.fourpeaks.com. Cuvee Verdad Alma 12 West Brewing Co. Multiple souring yeast strains give this ale its noticeably sour punch. The process and combination

produce an easy-drinking table sour with light, stone fruit tartness. www.12westbrewing.com. Fateful IPA McFate Brewing Co. This IPA is considered the “big brother” to McFate’s American Pale Ale offering. It is brewed with Warrior, Columbus, Simcoe, Cascade and Amarillo hops. The result of the combination features floral and citrus notes, in addition to a defined character and a touch of honey at the end. www.mcfatebrewing.com. Powabunga Hazy Double IPA South Lake Brewing Company Powabunga is a double IPA clocking in with a high alcohol content of 8.0% ABV. It’s made with British pale malt along with golden and flaked naked oats, which create a silky mouthfeel. Amarillo, El Dorado and Azacca hops provide notes of apricot, melon and pineapple juice. www.southlakebeer.com. Since its founding in 1995 as a small catering company, The Herb Box has operated with one goal: feed people nutritious food that tastes awesome. Today, with two bustling restaurant locations in Scottsdale – D.C. Ranch and 5th Avenune – the goal remains the same. One of the most popular dishes is the Butternut Squash and Corn Enchiladas ($17). Chef/owner Susan Wilcox roasts corn and squash separately then combines them with cotija, sour cream, green onions, herbs and garlic. She then wraps the sweet-yet-savory contents in corn tortillas and pan-fries them for crispness. The enchiladas are plated with warm tomatillo salsa and kale ensalada tossed in jalapeno-avocado dressing, then garnished with pickled onions, edamame, corn, candied pepitas, avocado, more cotija, and fresh cilantro. Creamy with a hint of spice, the verdant dish is perfect for springtime. www.theherbbox.com. So Scottsdale! April ‘19

SWEET & SOUR The Sidecar is a main attraction at Ocean Prime
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS
Ocean Prime, a modern American restaurant and lounge located at High Street, centers its cocktail program on the concept of “fresh bar.” “This is our formal promise to guests to use only fresh, housemade ingredients and hand-squeezed citrus in each of our handcrafted cocktails,” says Lukas Kealoha, food and beverage manager at Ocean Prime. The Sidecar ($14) is an exceptional example of using fresh citrus, and it’s ideal for sipping in the spring. “Legend has it the sidecar was invented at a bar in Paris during World War I,” Kealoha says. “The story goes that an American Army captain – who was driven to and from the bar in a motorcycle sidecar – helped dream it up, so it was named after his unique transportation of choice.” One of six basic drinks in David A. Embury’s iconic book, The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks, a sidecar is traditionally made with cognac, orange liqueur and citrus. “Ours starts with Hennessy VS, a subtly spicy cognac with hints of vanilla and oak,” Kealoha says. It is combined in a shaker with Cointreau, an orange-flavored triple sec from France known for its clean sweet and tart flavors. “We then cut fresh lemon and squeeze it into the shaker, which brings out the brightness of the Cointreau and adds acidity for balance,” Kealoha says. After shaking with ice, the mixture is double-strained into a coupe glass rimmed with raw sugar, which plays up the vanilla in the Hennessy and sweetness of the Cointreau. It is garnished with a freshly peeled lemon ribbon, which adds to the bright, refreshing aroma of citrus in this delectable drink. Ocean Prime, 5455 E. CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Chris Disney of Picazzo’s Healthy Italian Kitchen
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS
Arizona native Chris Disney heads Picazzo’s Healthy Italian Kitchen, where he sources clean, whole foods to develop mouthwatering modern Italian dishes with Mediterranean, Asian and Mexican influences. Where did you get your start in the kitchen? By running chips and salsa! Seriously, my mom ran a Mexican restaurant, so my first taste of the restaurant business was delivering chips and salsa to tables and washing dishes. Then I worked at Satisfied Frog in high school. How did you make your way to Picazzo’s? I actually didn’t start as a chef. In 2003, I saw that Picazzo’s was opening in Scottsdale and applied as a server. We opened in 2004, and by 2005, I was the general manager. It wasn’t until we prepared to open our Paradise Valley location in 2008 that I got into the kitchen. Tell us about the transition. As we approached the opening, we expanded our menu to include pasta and began researching organic, gluten-free, whole grain and vegan options. I immersed myself in that world and found I had both a knack for recipe development and a passion for using spices to take guests on a culinary journey around the globe. By 2014, when I took on the role of director of operations, I also took on the chef role. What makes Picazzo’s special? We meet the need for quality, healthy dining options for guests with dietary restrictions as well as their friends and family that do not have those. Our goal is to bring everyone together for the same dining experience, whether they are vegetarian, meat lovers, gluten-free, et al. And we hear you have something special for vegans? In addition to our main menu, we offer a separate menu that is 100 percent vegan using brands that support plant-based diets including Follow Your Heart, Daiya and Beyond Meat. What would readers be surprised to know about you? After I left Satisfied Frog in 2002, I spent a year as a professional piercing and tattoo artist before joining Picazzo’s. Picazzo’s Healthy Italian Kitchen has locations throughout the Valley, including Scottsdale and Paradise Valley; www.picazzos.com.

CB Live
CB Live is a multiuse comedy, music and entertainment venue and eatery from the owners of Copper Blues and Stand Up Live. Located in the heart of Desert Ridge Marketplace, one side boasts a full-service eatery in full view of a custom stage, which has already seen the likes of Jeffrey Ross and Chris Hardwick. Even when no formal entertainment is on stage, CB Live’s kitchen makes it a go-to option for chef-driven comfort food favorites. Some of the standout items include the show-stopping Brussels sprouts, which are cooked with Chistorra sausage, pepitas, cotija and lemon juice, and the brownie with butter crema and Butterfinger crumbles. During the Om-Lit Brunch, offered Sundays starting at 10 a.m., don’t miss the fried chicken and biscuits, huevos rancheros or chilaquiles. www.cblive.com.
Topgolf
There is so much more to Topgolf than balls, tees and targets. Each bay features a full menu of American and Southwestern dishes available from open to close as well as breakfast and brunch items. There is also a full-service restaurant and bar located on the floor level of Topgolf for those who want to sit and eat away from the game play. The brand takes great pride in offering seasonal options of food and drinks as well as gluten-free selections and even Impossible burgers for vegetarians and vegans. To make things even sweeter, Topgolf donates $1 from each of its injectable doughnut holes to Make-A-Wish. www.topgolf.com.
Starfire Golf Club
Gone are the days where you could only eat at, well, a restaurant. Modern gastronomy has made its way into not-so-expected venues as well as those typically known for less-gourmet snacks. This month, we set out to find food beyond the usual restaurant or bar, searching for culinary hot spots hiding in plain sight at places like local theaters, entertainment hubs and even the spa.
In January, Starfire Golf Club not only debuted a new golf course and driving range as part of its $750,000 renovation, but it also began offering guests an enhanced experience at its Starfire Grille, courtesy of newly hired chef Robin Murphy. Murphy joined the restaurant after working with the Arizona Cardinals as well as working as a chef for the likes of Madonna, Rascal Flatts and Aerosmith. Among her biggest hits is the addition of a wood-fired pizza oven. Another point of pride: Murphy is proud to support area farmers, making all menu items on-site and using local ingredients whenever possible. Starfire even hosts wine dinners in a series called Fork & Cork. www.starfiregolfclub.com.

Serving breakfast and lunch daily, the Spa Cafe at Boulders Resort & Spa – which is open to locals and resort and spa guests – offers a simple, healthy menu that takes advantage of the ripe bounty from the spa’s 5,600-square-foot organic garden. The cuisine is prepared with a focus on well-being, catering to special diets and available to enjoy indoors or on the outdoor patio. Guests often visit the Spa Cafe to fuel up for hiking the McDowell Mountain Preserve, Black Mountain, or the Cave Creek Recreation Area, while others savor the healthy eats before or after a spa treatment. www.theboulders.com.

the expansive menu once seated. The options are seemingly endless and include warm cheddar biscuits, filet mignon sliders, steak frites skewers, and lobster rolls. There are, of course, also gourmet twists on traditional film fare such as flavored popcorn and elevated baked goods, not to mention a full bar with an impressive wine list. www.ipic.com.
It’s not called “Dynamite” for nothing. While the name is technically in reference to the grill’s location off Dynamite Boulevard in North Scottsdale, the food truly is the perfect twist on a dynamite golf course menu. The eatery overlooks the 18th hole of the Pinnacle Course, which is open to the public and surrounded by beautiful desert landscape. On Thursdays, Dynamite offers a smokehouse special featuring everything from ribs to smoked duck. On Fridays, expect prime rib as part of a three-course special. And from time to time, they even offer sommelier-paired wine dinners to players and locals alike. www.troonnorthgolf.com.
Roadhouse Cinemas
Like iPic, Roadhouse Cinemas – the only locally owned and operated theater of its kind in Arizona – focuses on stepping movie theater dining up several notches. And, given how Arizona-proud the venue is, it’s distinctive in its concept. For example, the majority of the beers on the menu are from across the state, and many of the food offerings feature Southwest, Arizona and even Mexican flavors. You’ll find items like street tacos, carne asada, jalapeno-infused popcorn, nachos, and green chile pizza. www.roadhousecinemas.com.
BLK Live
Near Scottsdale Quarter, BLK Live merges culinary craft with live entertainment. The 20,000-square-foot space includes a restaurant and bar, a breezy open patio, and an indoor concert hall, as well as a full-sized outdoor stage and swimming pool lined with cabanas and tables. The space is a spirited celebration of rock ‘n’ roll with a laid-back perspective on fine dining. Modern Oysterbar Chophouse opens in Scottsdale

Oysters have long been lauded for their aphrodisiac effects. And while the oyster bar – with options from both coasts flown in daily – at the newly opened Modern Oysterbar Chophouse is intoxicating, the full restaurant experience is what will really make you swoon. Before even tasting the food and drink, the 6,000-square-foot space itself, formerly home to Sonata’s Restaurant, will put you in the mood for romance. The interior is awash in charcoal gray and deep blue hues. Upon entering, there are two clear focal points. First, there is the aforementioned oyster bar with seating for 12, which allows guests to watch the raw bar chefs in action. Then, there is the main cocktail bar, which seats 14 and features numerous selections of wine by the glass and bottle, including four different wines and several draft beer selections on tap. Also offered are specialty cocktails, bottled beers and spirits. The dining room is decked in plush booth seating as well as high tops, and many of the seats allow guests to watch both the raw bar chefs and the chefs working in the kitchen. An impressive outside patio rounds out the space, including a

cozy fire pit and a full bar. And then there is the food. “There is a high demand in the Valley for fresh and innovative seafood and shellfish,” says co-founder Frank Schneider, who, with fellow co-founders Cat and Randy Frankel, bring 99 years of combined experience to the restaurant from such notable venues as Steak 44, Zinc Bistro, Mary Elaine’s, Mastro’s Ocean Club and Bourbon & Bones. Leading the kitchen is executive chef Mike Bouwens, known for his work at Roaring Fork and, most recently, Zinc Bistro. Joining him in the kitchen is pastry chef Samantha Frankel, formerly of Zinc Bistro, and behind the bar is beverage manager Dylan Frankel, also a veteran of Zinc Bistro as well as a bar manager for Square One Concepts. Beyond the oyster offerings, the massive dinner menu has several standout sections including salads and soups, cold and warm seafood towers, warm starters such as foie gras and smoked pork belly, a charcuterie selection curated by Samantha, and steak and seafood options that run the gamut from 32-ounce long bone rib-eye steak to whole grilled lobster. There are also options for those who prefer chicken, lamb and scallops to the more traditional chophouse fare, and a dozen shareable sides ranging from roasted wild mushrooms and charred broccolini to truffled Parmesan fries and creamed corn. “And for the cocktails, expect a mix between updated takes on classics and new concepts using the latest techniques and fresh ingredients,” Schneider says. Modern is open Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 4 to 9 p.m., Thursday to Saturday from 4 to 10 p.m., and Sunday from 4 to 9 p.m. It is closed on Monday. Modern Oysterbar Chophouse, 10050 N.
